Premursa have subsequently awarded the works contract to Ferrovial and CHM, who will shape the first European film themed mega park, a project that will have an estimated total investment of 1,000 million euros upon completion. Premursa, who have been awarded a renewable license from Paramount Pictures for 30 years, is running the overall project. The theme park will cover an area of approximately 550,000 m2, while a similar area will be reserved for the leisure and commercial ‘Lifestyle Centre’, which will feature more than half a dozen hotels and leisure establishments.

The entertainment ‘Lifestyle Centre’ also involves the direct collaboration of the Autonomous Community of Murcia, as a percentage of the zone will be used to promote cultural activities. This area is intended to house six

hotels, two with four stars and four with three stars, set along, a main street with shops, bars, restaurants, casino and nightclubs as well as a business area with office complexes, convention centre and auditorium. The park, situated in Alhama de Murcia, is slated for the first two phases to be open for activities during the last quarter of 2015.

Both the first and second phases of the park will be built simultaneously to allow visitors to enjoy a full range of activities once completed. In March last year, Premursa spent 10.3 million euros acquiring two farms, totalling an area of 1,031,077m2, on which to build ‘Paramount Park’ and the cultural, commercial and leisure complex, ‘Lifestyle Centre’.

Plans have also been drawn up to allow the theme park itself to host two themed hotels as part of future developments.

Corvera Airport inspected A DOZEN TECHNICIANS, engineers and architects of various ministerial departments were given access to Corvera airport this week, to check the status of facilities, equipment and operational systems.

by Keith Nicol This was in compliance with an order by the Superior Court of Justice who authorized the right of the Government of the Autonomous Region to conduct an inspection. The Ministry of Public Works and Legal Services Department of the Autonomous Community have filed an appeal to the Supreme Court to execute a termination order for the Aeromur contract and to take over possession of the airport.

The president of the Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel said on Tuesday, that if the concessionaire Aeromur changes their position then this would be “hunky-dory” as long as the airport receives a sovereign guarantees to cover the 200 million euro that otherwise would have to be covered by the cash strapped Community. Negotiations are still ongoing with Aeromur as to whether they will lose rights to the concession or when the time is right, remain in control when the airport is ready to open for business.

Valcárcel added that “at any time we may

sign the agreement with AENA to close San Javier airport.” The president said that it was only a matter of “fixing the day,” and that he prefers to sign the document in Madrid, for which he says he has a journey that is pending to meet with the Ministers of Finance and Justice.

The Spanish Press and members of the opposition Socialist Party PSOE are still expressing their concerns over the viability of Corvera. The Vega Media Press noted that Alicante is expanding their facilities offering special deals to airlines to use their facilities, hoping to reach the three million-visitor mark per year, which was once the projected numbers for Corvera.

It remains that San Javier has two runways and magnificent modern facilities including a control tower, all valued at 60 million euros, while in Corvera, nobody seems to know whom this belongs to at the moment. The Vega Media Press commented “What is the solution for Corvera? From where will two million passengers a year come from?” Who knows indeed.

An appeal for help

MR TERRY Turner of Torrevieja is asking if anyone has any information on the whereabouts of his wife, who is suffering from a mental illness and who disappeared from El Acequion on Monday morning. She was last spotted near Mercadona in Central Torrevieja at 6pm by a family friend.

She is wearing trousers with a bold burgundy, white and black check, a cream poncho and a dusty pink fleece, brightly striped socks and flat red shoes. She may also be wearing a blue or pink scarf on her head.

If anyone sees her, please contact the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja straight away.

Classic Cars for Valentina The beautiful Valentina who is battling a brain tumour

by Keith Nicol VALENTINA IS a beautiful, bubbly, 20-month old girl suffering from a brain tumour. She has been undergoing all different types of chemotherapy but these have been largely ineffective and although the analysis of her last MRI scan in July gave the family a little optimism, her only real hope is to go to America for treatment. To do so, a number of fundraising events have been held to raise the substantial revenue needed for such a trip and treatment.

Over the last year, the family, along with the support of Aventura Solidarity Association Torrevieja, have run a number of fundraising days, from Padel Tournaments, Tapas Days, to a motorcycle rally and last month’s benefit concert. Their next event is on Sunday November 17th, starting at the early hour of 9.30am!

It’s a full day of fun, featuring a classic, custom

and sports car event, taking place at Talleres Virauto Workshop, Calle Holanda 2, Esquina Austria Poligono las Maromas, Almoradí.

However, it’s not just a display of fabulous cars as there are things to do for the entire family, such as live music from local rock band ‘RandomPlay Almoradi’, ‘Los Faranduli’ and a DJ, plus prize raffles, children’s entertainment, inflatable amusements, gifts and surprises, cakes, beer and even fancy sandwiches! It’s guaranteed to be a great day out and all in aid of a good cause.

The family have also been refreshingly transparent with publishing all of the financial results from each and every event and donation on their Facebook page, for one and all to see how the campaign is progressing.

The Orihuela Costa and District Branch will be holding their annual Service of Remembrance at the Capilla de las Mil Palmeras (Church) next to The Olympia Restaurant on Sunday November 10th. Anyone who wishes to attend the service will be most welcome and should be seated at the Church for 10.30am.

There will be a parade of national flags and

standards led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, while the service will be conducted by the Rev. Terry Baxter and The Phoenix band will provide the music to the hymns. There will also be a solo performance by Rebecca Holt.

Following the service, wreaths will be laid by Paul Rodwell from the British Consulate, Chris Wyatt District Chairman along with various other dignitaries and organisations. Remembrance Crosses will also be available to be laid for your own remembrance.

In Torrevieja, the Remembrance Day Service will take place on Monday, November 11th at 11.00am, with limited seating available both inside and outside the Church in San Luis. Representatives of Torrevieja’s Town Hall, Graham Knight the outgoing director of the Foreign Residents Office, local dignitaries, ex-service men and women and the general public, will attend the service. After the service, wreaths and crosses will be laid in the Garden of Remembrance beside the church. Wear your poppy with Pride and support those who have supported you.

It’s time to put your thinking cap on and enter the Bank of Ideas competition organised by the Asociacion de Vecinos ‘San Miguel Arcangel’.

Their objective is to collect the best ideas for improving the economic, cultural and social future of San Miguel de Salinas. Your ideas could be about boosting tourism, business or simply the look and life of the town. Once collected and sorted, the ideas will go into a ‘Bank of Ideas’ .

Torrevieja Barbershop’s Knight to remember

Torrevieja’s Director of the Foreign Residents Office will soon be taking retirement from the post he created 15 years ago, with Torrevieja being the first municipality to offer such a service. However, when Graham first moved to Spain, prior to taking up his role with the residents office, one of his guilty pleasures was singing, which he did with Torrevieja Barbershop.

In celebration of his retirement, and a possible return to stage as a performer with the group, Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonisers (TBH) have organised a special evening in his honour.

The variety show, ‘A Knight to Remember’, will be held at the Los Rosales Restaurante.

Guadamar, on the Lemon Tree Road, near El Raso and beside the Petrol Station, on Saturday November 9th at 8.00pm.

Doors open at 7.00pm and tickets are just 5€.

As with all their events, TBH will be donating money to charity; this time it will be The Torrevieja’s Alzheimer Association, AFA. If you would like to come and celebrate this farewell event for Graham, and support a very worthwhile charity, then they would all love to see you there.

Frustrated wives

…revealed in part one of world’s largest expat survey THE SECOND survey ‘Retail & Finance’ gets underway at www.theexpatsurvey.com and the third and final part, ‘Travel & Health’, is set to launch in November.

The developer estimates that the investment will generate an economic impact of 535 million€ per year, accounting for about 2% of regional GDP. The newspaper La Verdad provided some additional figures and key project data, which including that the mini-

mum investment required for the park is 230 million€ for the construction of the Park and Lifestyle Centre: 4,000 workers will be involved simultaneously at the height of construction and that the park will feature between 35 and 40 attractions, which will require an additional investment of more than 100 million€. However, it’s still not clear where the initial 72 million€ of investment is coming from, although developer Jesus Samper reckons that the project will receive ample financial support for the project to begin in the new year.

Rustler arrested!

A RUSTLER that operated up and down the coast has been arrested for the alleged theft of 17 lambs. The livestock was located in pens in the city of Murcia where a sale was in the process of negotiation. The perpetrator, wanted in connection with a long list of other offences including physical violence and armed threats, was apprehended by police last week in possession of stolen lambs valued at around 1,300€.

Expat voting made easier

by Jack Troughton BRITISH EXPATS still qualified to vote in UK General Elections could soon be registering online to claim a voice back at home.

The Government is experimenting with the hi-tech registration and has held a test day in Oxford at the end of last month with another trial run in London on 17th December.

It is hoped if successful, ongoing tests can be moved abroad to bring more people into the process – aiming to encourage more people to take part in elections and save them time and effort.

Currently, British citizens living overseas who wish to take part in UK ballots must fill in a registration form and post it back to their local electoral office. Once one the electoral register, they can arrange to vote in person, via a postal vote or choose a proxy to cast a vote for them.

The Cabinet Office is working on the technology in a bid to entice the “missing legion” of some five million potential voters around the globe to sign up to the register – numbers that could prove decisive in a close contest.

However, until a secure online voting system is developed it will not solve the unreliability of a postal vote – some electoral offices leave no time for an expat to actually take part in the ballot, or the unre-

liability of the proxy system.

John Waterworth, of the Government Digital Service is working on the pilot scheme, and invited expats visiting Britain to have a go in the dummy run. “Anyone who is a British citizen living abroad can come and try it out.”

He said of the online registration: “this will be more convenient, simpler and quicker. It is also about us having a better identification process to improve the quality of our register.”

British expats are allowed to vote in Parliamentary Elections and European Parliamentary Elections for up to 15 years after moving abroad – a controversial time limit currently being fought by campaign group battling for universal suffrage.

But Mr Waterworth admitted: “The qualification we have as to who can and cannot vote is not changing.”

CAM executives spend the night in jail THE FORMER Director General of CAM, Roberto López Abad and four other senior investment bankers including real estate executive Daniel Gil, spent Wednesday night in the cells of the Guardia Civil HQ in Alicante after being arrested earlier in the day at their homes in connection with the failure of the Cam Bank. Last year the five were named as formal suspects by lead investigator Judge Javier Gómez Bermúdez in a probe alleging fraud, price manipulation and corporate malfeasance that led to Spain being forced to seek a €100bn bailout from its European partners. Following a complaint filed by the Fund for Orderly Bank Restructuring (FROB), an investigation was opened to determine if Lopez Gil Abad in collusion with others simulated investments in the Caribbean to appropriate funds.

Neglected Orihuela I NOTE that at long last the local newspapers covering Costa Blanca South have taken notice of the dreadful neglect of Orihuela Costa and the awful state of the streets. Residents and tourists alike have suffered the smells and plagues of flies emerging from the huge piles of garden waste that have spent the summer rotting on virtually every urbanisation on Orihuela Costa.

I want to know what we pay our local taxes for. The state of the streets would disgust the most poverty stricken third world countries. I was under the impression that Spain was a modern country with high standards of hygiene. This seems to be true of every area other than Orihuela Costa which is treated as the dustbin of the Orihuela Council.

It’s totally disgusting that the mayor has the audacity to put the blame on local residents rather than doing his job and making sure the rubbish is properly collected.

It is a sign of the mayor’s utter contempt for the large non-Spanish community living on the coast. Nowhere else has to suffer such third rate treatment and in no other area are residents blamed for the utter incompetence of the local council.

I think the situation is sufficiently disgraceful to involve our MEP! Sam Mois

Only the best I COULD not believe that Geraldine Lander (RTN 1st November Letter of the Week) could not believe what she saw in a supermarket pet supplies aisle - does she think that dogs (she refers to them as ‘little beasts’) go through their whole lives without being washed or shampooed? Even when they go into water (sea, rivers etc.) they don’t come out clean.

Has she ever (it seems she doesn’t like them) owned a dog? Does she not realise that dogs walk on their paws without the benefit of shoes/ boots as we humans have? They walk through muck, dirt, long grass, etc. and sit in the most unlikely places, sometimes getting wet, dirty and smelly. So why shouldn’t they be shampooed with a shampoo that has a perfume? Does she not buy her toilet products with a scent, or does she like to smell ‘au natural’ - and if she has (or ever had) a dog would she like to walk around with a smelly dog on a lead?

She then moans about the price of dog shampoo…HEY LADY - we don’t shampoo them every day! And if you haven’t got a dog you don’t have to worry about the price!

Then she goes off into the realms of fantasy about hair dying, diapers, jewellery, expensive clothes for dogs… which detracts from the fact that dogs need to be cleaned and can’t do it themselves.

I have a dog (and also 6 cats) and he does get washed and shampooed with a scented shampoo. And Geraldine it is only the best for our dogs, cats and other animals because we do love them.

Anyway I have to rush now as the dog is sitting with the cats waiting for his shampoo, set and perm...coming boy…!

Pickpockets I WOULD like to warn your readers about pickpockets operating in Mercadona, Rojales.

Recently a friend and I were getting into the lifts to go up to the car park. A Spanish couple were already in the lift so it was a little crowded. As the doors closed two men pushed in. My friend exited first, followed by the two men. I let the Spanish couple out then I went.

I saw one of the two men trying to steal my friend’s wallet, shielded by his accomplice. I pushed them away. As they went back down the stairs into the store, he spat at me. I gave him two fingers and a swear word in Arabic (which I learned in my days in the army serving in the Suez Canal in the 50s).

Both men were over 6ft tall, well built and of North African appearance, aged around 25-30, so beware if you see them. They walk around without buying anything.

Name withheld

For better or worse...

BANG! Well that’s what happened to me two weeks before our wedding, a few weeks ago on 5th October. I really fell for my groom and broke my ankle, so no walk down the aisle there…

WALLOP! Then we were told a few days before that there was a double booking for the church so had to put the ceremony back an hour to 6pm, but that didn’t phase Pastor Keith Brown, with his bright and moving ceremony.

Then the police wouldn’t allow us to give cake and Cava in the square - as it was not a town hall fiesta.

FLASH! Then it was announced the town fiesta starts at 6pm also, so town blocked off (do you think someone is trying to tell us something) but seeing as we are both 70ish we thought ‘go for it anyway’ as we needed to bop at Tommy from the Hillside club entertainment.

Fortunately, The Quesada Country Club did us proud with 135 guests - they were magnificent with food, service, and decor for our reception, for which we are most grateful.

Thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed themselves, we could not have had a better wedding had we been 20 years old!

“Light up the sky with Standard Fireworks…”

MY STINT on local radio is done and it’s back to reality for this old hack. It was good to play at presenters, down in that Sussex studio, but for now it’s back to the Midlands and on with the mundane. Thanks to those kind RTN readers that managed to tune in on Tinternet and send good wishes via email – I hope I didn’t leave anyone out and played the right songs for the right people (technology isn’t my best attribute, as you know). Even dear ole Dene Michael trolled up for an interview just before he headed off to Spain on Friday. If you see him in Benidorm, give him my best.

Today (Wednesday) is rainy, windy and bleak; and the thought of winter down there on the Costa Blanca is a truly enticing one. Mind you, it managed to stay dry yesterday for Bonfire Night and for the first time in many years I bought some fireworks and had a Bonfire party. The offer in our local Yum Yum store of half-price fireworks was more than this ageing pyromaniac could resist. So, with hot spuds in the oven and chilli on the stove (not to mention a beer or two in the fridge) we delighted in letting off: Roman Candles, Catherine Wheels, Stella Scorchers, Vesuvius Fountains, Traffic Lights and a salvo of high flying rockets.

Hmmm, here’s a thing; nowadays the rockets come with easy plant-in-the-grass plastic launchers – not like in my youth where milk bottles were the preferred method of dispatch for your Standard or

Brooks rockets. I used to love the walk to school the next morning collecting the carcases of spent ordnance… Do remember doing that?

One thing that hasn’t changed in this era of exponential technological advance is the simple operation of getting a Catherine Wheel to spin – or, as is so often the case, not spin. Yup, I had to resort to manually (with a safety glove on, of course) whizzing the damned thing to get it going. It just hung there uselessly belching its pretty fountain of fire… And why is it always so tricky to bang the said Catherine Wheel to a fence in the first place? It so often seems to involve a bashed thumb.

Did you know where the terminology Catherine Wheel comes from? I’m afraid it’s erm, rather gruesome. Here’s the griff: “Catherine Wheel – apparently named after St Catherine, who was executed by being tied to a wheel and ‘broken’ on it with hammers.” Nasty, eh? It somehow makes a bashed thumb easier to live with. Mind you, the Roman Candle doesn’t have a much better pedigree either, alluding as it does to the Roman Emperor Nero who used to set people on fire and use them as ‘candles’ at the Coliseum. Whilst this is probably a myth, it is curiously inaccurate: a burning person doesn’t tend to set fireballs off up into the air, does s/he? I suppose it depends if they’ve had a curry the night before – or some of my firework party chilli.

One of the pyrotechnic ‘musts’ from my schooldays is sadly (although, probably rightly) no longer available. Namely, the once ubiquitous Banger. We used to core out semimouldy apples and place our Bangers in the middle of them to roll, or lob, down the street, alarming old ladies and cute kittens. Horrid behaviour, eh? It’s more than likely our fault that kids today can’t have them!

Another long banned item of firework fame is the Jumping Jack (named after the ‘mythical’ Spring Heeled Jack who terrorised London for a while) which once lighted would leap and jump around in all directions uncontrollably. My sister used to shriek alarmingly at the mere sight of these fireworks – so much so, my mum didn’t allow any of them in our fireworks tin. Halcyon days… Oh, that emotive smell of cordite.

Fury over MPs energy expense claims

by Jack Troughton EXPENSE CLAIMS by Members of Parliament for gas and electricity bills at second homes have ignited a storm of protest.

As pensioners and poorer families struggle to pay power bills, more than 300 politicians – more than half of the Commons - claimed over £200,000 in expenses to cover the utility costs last year, part of the £23 million claimed between April 2012 and March 2013.

And campaigners in Spain and Europe battling to keep the Winter Fuel Payment – up to £300 a year depending on age – are equally incensed.

Labour leader Ed Milliband, who has attacked the Government over spiralling fuel costs – claimed £403.59 and Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg £254.29 for gas and electricity at their constituency homes. Prime Minister David Cameron and George Osborne did not take advantage of the perk.

Millionaire Nadhim Zahawi, Tory MP for Stratford upon Avon, claimed the most, £5,822, while former defence minister Andrew Robathan claimed £4,586, former Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain £4,571 – and Alan Duncan, development minister and former oil executive, who maintained politicians were treated like “sh+t” and made to live “on rations” during the 2009 expenses scandal, claimed £3,998.

New rules since 2010 allow MPs to make claims for second homes up to a maximum of £20,100 to cover gas, electricity, council tax, rent, telephone, and the internet.

However, it is a bitter pill for families and pensioners in the UK and abroad who are increasingly angry at the cost of energy.

Campaigner Margaret Hale, who lives on the Costa Blanca, told RTN: “It is atrocious. They are taking hundreds of pounds from pensioners living here in Spain and in Europe by withdrawing the WFP and those same pensioners – struggling to heat their only homes – are still paying taxes to pay for MPs to heat a second home.”

JUMPER Labour’s John Mann, who did not make a claim, suggested MPs that did “should start wearing thicker jumpers.”

He added: “There will be people including pensioners who can’t afford to heat their homes who will be furious to find out MPs that can afford to pay are putting in such high claims.”

And Neil Jordon-Duncan of the National Pensioners Convention said: “Pensioners will be disgusted at how out of touch many MPs are, when many older people have to choose between heating and eating.”

The Government has been forced to respond after an electronic petition calling for the WFP to be kept as a universal benefit reached 10,000 signatures. Yesterday (Thursday) it stood at 13,938 names and a target of 100,000 will lead to a

debate by the Backbench Business Committee.

The statement reads: “The Government remains committed to protecting key support for older people for this Parliament, in line with Coalition Agreement.

“Winter Fuel Payments are non-contributory and were originally introduced to give older people in the UK the reassurance they can keep warm during cold weather.

However, following a European Court judgement, Winter Fuel Payments are now also made to eligible people living outside the UK in another European Economic Area (EEA) Member Sate and Switzerland.

“To help return to the original policy intention, the Government intends to bring in an eligibility criterion, effectively from winter 2015/16, based on country of residence with Winter Fuel Payments going only to eligible people living in EEA countries with colder climates.”

Spain says no to UN investigation of Franco regime

SPANISH OFFICIALS reporting to a critical United Nations panel on Wednesday said that despite calls by human rights groups for investigations into the disappearance of at least 152,000 civilians during the Franco regime, the terms of Spain’s 1978 amnesty would not be revisited. The decision was confirmed before the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances comprising 11 independent legal experts by Spain’s Ambassador in Geneva Ana Menendez Perez, despite Spanish Judge Baltasar Garzon urging the UN Committee to re-examine the events that took place behind the lines at the hands of Franco’s Nationalist forces during the civil war and then in the first 12 years of Franco’s rule, up to 1951.

LAST WEEK on Bay Radio ‘Sound Advice’ I mentioned how concerned I was at the way some banks/ insurance companies are promoting their house policies. Unless the policy document is written in a language you can understand, how can you check the exact cover, unless you have received a written quotation, in English, which explains the cover you are being offered. It is very easy to give you information on the phone, but as I always advise, only the written word is paramount in law.

It is not possible or viable, if you think logically, that a more economical price is going to give you the exact same cover as one that is a little more expensive.

My sales consultants are sometimes informed by a client that they want to cancel their house policy with us as they have accepted a quotation from another company, being assured that it is exactly the same cover they are being offered, but at a reduced price, which is obviously very attractive in this day and age with the crisis we are in, when each penny counts. However, later they find out when a claim is made that expectations have not been realised.

My Company works very closely with Liberty Seguros, a bona fide and extremely large worldwide insurance company. They are not a bank and have years of experience of offering good, sound policies, not dissimilar from the ones you are used to in England, supported by a very efficient back up service.

A point to reflect on: UK television is always advertising insurance companies, and this may seduce you into thinking the cover is the same in Spain.

This is very definitely not so as you may find out to your detriment. I will take this opportunity to point out a few of the differences:

New for old: This is not generally part of the Spanish companies cover and you could find yourself severely out of pocket because contents cover can be drastically limited to only a few items at a set basic amount regardless of their actual value.

Be aware that you could have a policy that only covers the square metres of the house, but that it excludes your terraces, pool or boundary walls.

Jewellery and valuable items: unless specified, you could discover that when submitting a claim for loss or damage these are either not covered at all or are severely undervalued.

Have you been offered cover for accidental damage on buildings and/or contents, if not, then again claiming for the following may not be covered at all? For example: Earth Tremors; subsidence; knocking the television over; dropping something into your basin and cracking it; spillage of paint… you never know what kind of accident can occur at any time.

Do you know if you are allowed to make more than one claim a year? Some companies limit you – however, Liberty Seguros does not.

One final point regarding natural disasters, do not assume that the consortium will automatically cover all the damage, this is dependent on the severity, the regional damage and how many claims are being made, otherwise your Insurance Company is liable to cover you. Have you got cover for this with your company?

stances and pocket. The basic is extremely competitive, the Plus gives you more cover and the Premium will cover water loss if related to damages caused by a water leak.

Perhaps on reading this information you can start to understand my concerns that people are going into an area that is a minefield. Never assume anything in life but especially in Spain. Following my concerns regarding house insurance, a similar situation can occur when selecting a health insurance policy.

Just recently there have been a number of comparison charts printed, which can be very misleading and in my opinion quite dangerous and unethical.

If you are considering Private Health Insurance, Asssa has some very attractive offers at the moment, including no increase on premiums for the whole of 2014. If you take the policy out starting November or December they are offering 10% discount; free upgrade; 50% child discount and monthly payments with no added interest charge - all these are for the lifetime of the policy.

As you can see this is a very good time to think about Private health care, especially in light of a recent publication which states that National Health patients are waiting for x-rays and scans for up to five months and then longer still for the results to be assessed and a diagnosis given. As you can imagine, delays of this length of time can be life threatening when these are needed to diagnose a possible serious illness. Also bear in mind that you could be in great pain. Therefore why not phone us to ask about our top-up policy for a speedy diagnosis; even for those who have a SIP card but are concerned about the long waiting lists, the policy cost for age 50-59 is only 63€ per month.

Artists against cancer OVER THE past five years, U2 Bono tribute performer Robert Bonovox has been building up a reputation as one of the most professional artists on the Costa Blanca and Calida.

by Keith Nicol Robert and long time partner Sue married last October and due to both of them watching loved ones among their family and friends suffering and then passing from Cancer, he decided to form Artists Against Cancer this April, after an inspirational talk with Maria Wilson from the Pink Ladies.

Such is Robert’s reputation among other artists that each time he decides to put on a show, entertainers are knocking at his door to offer their services rather than him looking for people to perform with.

Unlike some other local events that have advertised and professed to give all their proceeds to charity but have not, every cent that is donated, made from ticket sales, t-shirts or raffles, goes to a chosen Cancer charity; 100%. He’s very proud of this fact and gives thanks that both Sue and he can make a living performing in Spain

and are only too glad to be able to give something back.

The first performance of Artists Against Cancer was called ‘One Day in May’, just six months ago, and since then the reputation of AAC has grown and grown. Their last event for 2013 took place at El Mundos in Benijofar on Sunday 27th October and included performances by Rhionne, Wendy Dawn Cartledge, Barrington Entertainer, BJ Bluesman, Lyndon B, Bella Luna and of course Rob himself and raised 1,138€ for Maria and the Pink Ladies on behalf of the AECC. Rob is returning to the UK for two months and returning to Spain in February when he will start work on some new and exciting fundraising projects for Artists Against Cancer for 2014. Sweet Peas for spring colour by

SWEET PEAS grow spectacularly well in Spain and that November is the best month to plant them.

Sweet peas, ‘lathyrus odoratus’ can grow within mixed beds, up walls, fences, in large pots supported by canes, intertwined into later flowering climbers as well as on dedicated cane frames in the flower garden or around the orchard or vegetable plot. Dwarf varieties can be grown in pots or window boxes and at the front of mixed flower beds.

Normal climbing varieties climb to a height of around two metres or the dwarf bush varies. There are dozens of varieties now available in all shades of single or mixed colours.

Choose your seeds carefully. Unfortunately the choice of seeds available in garden centres in Spain is limited so consider buying from the UK specialists Robert Bolton and Son, telephone: 0044 1440 785246, fax 788000.

Plant directly in the ground or in pots from the middle of November to December: the earlier you plant the earlier the spring display. This is particularly important if you plan to plant in the vegetable plot and want to plant

follow on crops as soon as they stop flowering. They are very frost-hardy.

Sweet peas do best in a rich, well-drained soil, so prepare for planting as follows: In the open ground rake a shallow trench and work in well-rotted compost or manures to the top twenty centimetres of soil.

In pots - prepare a potting mix comprising 60% rich soil, 30% peat substitute and 10% coarse sand. At same time prepare the beds for planting out plantlets as above.

Before planting seeds, soak them in water overnight.

Some varieties germinate faster if the seeds are filed.

Read and follow the instructions on the packets carefully.

Plant seeds two to three centimetres deep in the garden in rows or patches, in a trench or in holes placed ten to fifteen centimetres apart. Sow three seeds in each hole, 3-5cm apart in pots and seed boxes to enable seedlings to be separated when planting out.

Give the seeds protection as soon as they are sown by covering seed beds, placing slug pellets, netting to protect from birds and placing mouse traps in the greenhouse.

Keep the soil damp at all times but do not cause the soil to be over wetted or waterlogged.

Feed fortnightly with an organic fertilizer or a mixed comfrey/nettle feed.

When seedlings have three sets of leaves, nip off the top of the plants including the top pair of leaves to stimulate lateral shoots and bushy plants.

Treat aphids immediately with a soap and water spray.

Once flowers form, cut regularly and deadhead uncut flower heads to stimulate a long flowering season.

Sweet peas can flower for several months if tended properly. To achieve the longest displays plant the seeds weekly in the autumn over a period of six to eight weeks.

WHEN LOOKING at investing you need to make sure that your decisions are based on your own personal needs and objectives.

DON’T LET your judgment be impeded by the feeling that you should be achieving a return that is unrealistic. Understand the level of risk you are happy with and give yourself realistic timeframes to achieve your goal.

There are some excellent products being offered out there at the moment by Independent Financial advisers for both the cautious and balanced investor, offering rates of return that have the potential to protect you against inflation and make your money achieve significantly greater growth than you could achieve from a Bank deposit for the next few years. If you are a cautious investor, realistically you should be looking at a return of circa 5% after charges and if a balanced investor circa7%.

If you want to preserve your wealth don’t be tempted by the myriad of scam investment schemes that are out there at the moment be it investing in Gold mines, oil companies, shares in Companies, property

investments with guaranteed rental returns, etc.

According to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), UK investors lose about £200m a year to highpressure investment boiler rooms. It reckons some 10,000 victims are ripped off for an average £20,000.

This is the tip of the iceberg. Many victims do not report losses, perhaps because they are too ashamed, or they know that the perpetrators, usually based overseas, get clean away or their chances of compensation are remote.

Beware the dodgy dealers who phone to sell you investments. No legitimate investment company cold calls potential clients. Some are straight-forward frauds, while others offer real shares but these are nearly worthless or highly risky.

Remember if something seems to be too good to be true is usually always is: the higher the returns offered the higher the risk.

Don’t risk your money, make it work for you - make sure you get the right advice.

Debt collection and clients unpaid invoices I MADE a website for some clients one year ago. They have been delaying the payment with all sorts of excuses, like the economic situation, etc. Now they say that they refuse to pay because the work done is not perfect and there are some mistakes on the web. If I legally claim for the money they owe me, should I prove that the website was handed over in perfects conditions of use?

Although the work was done and the web was handed over to him, your debtor refuses to pay the invoice because he claims that it was done in a faulty way. This is known as the exception of defective fulfillment - that means the debtor recognises that the product or service has been delivered but

alleges that it was defective. It is also known as non rite adimpleti contractus exception.

This exception it is different from the non adimpleti contractus, which relates to the complete lack of fulfillment or non-delivery of the product or service.

In the first one, your case, it is understood that the service was provided inexactly, partially or incompletely.

In reference to your question of whether you must prove that your work was done perfectly… it is the respondent or debtor who must prove the deficiencies, problems or irregularities of the services handed over by the claimant or creditor, because he is not denying that the service was done, just that it was not as agreed by the parties.

Therefore if your client does not want to pay,

he must prove the existence of the defects he mentioned, in the same way that in the cases of building or renovation contracts, it is the owner who must prove the building problems or the bad quality of the materials to justify his lack of payment for work done.

In any case, court precedents state that this exceptio non rite adimpleti contractus should be accepted only when the defects are major in nature and are essential according to the contract, and the claim should be refused if they are insignificant or minor.

Education Department axes scholarships mid-course THE EDUCATION Department has axed Erasmus Scholarships for thousands of overseas students in mid-course! More than 5,300 students attached to at least five universities are affected by the decision to remove funding that supports monthly payments of between 100€ and 300€ to students on tight budgets studying on mobility programmes in other European countries. The cut was made on 29th October without warning, leaving students in an extremely difficult financial situation until the end of the year.

The rector of the University of Valencia, Esteban Morcillo, said: “This measure will affect a large group of students in leading universities throughout Europe: they will be left in a very difficult and complicated position.” Morcillo added that at least if the changes had been taken at the start of the next course, students could have adjusted their budgets accordingly.

IS CCTV surveillance a good or a bad thing?

MOST PEOPLE agree that having a watchful eye in our streets and thoroughfares is a good idea. But how far should it go and when does neighbourhood watch become Big Brother?

We have become almost blasé to the fact that we can feature in almost a hundred live performances every day. It’s not just our image that is being recorded and shared, so is our data. In 2011 a new law in the UK stated that the visitor to a website must be made aware of ‘cookies’ and give their consent to their use. Most people had never even heard of a ‘cookie’ before.

However, you might have noticed how spooky it is that the adverts popping up on your screen appear able to read your mind. Of course, it’s not as sinister as this, it’s just those crafty little cookies placed on our hard drive, storing up our browsing habits and interests for future reference.

It’s not just businesses that are making the most of

the information we generate. It’s public authorities and services too. We have seen this kind of information sharing grow over the years in Spain, particularly when it comes to chasing taxes.

It’s quite a task for The Spanish Tax Authority checking that residents and non-residents alike are up-to-date with their taxes. With owners of Spanish property being scattered across the world, tracking down those who are seeking to avoid their obligations is no easy matter.

That’s where the electricity companies and Land Registry come in handy. One of the problems with identifying who should be paying different property taxes is establishing exactly what their residential status is. However, access to your electricity bill means that the tax man can see whether you are living here permanently or not and therefore what taxes you should be paying.

Non-residents have the two property taxes to pay, IBI (council tax) and either imputed income tax or rental

income tax. Residents have only IBI to pay and tax on their personal income.

Cross-referencing your electricity bill with the register of your status at the Land Registry demonstrates whether you really are using your property as declared. South Pacific blows into town

By Keith Nicol LOVERS OF Broadway musicals still have time to book their tickets for a very special, one night only performance of the music, South pacific. The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical will be coming to Torrevieja’s Teatro Municipal, on Wednesday 20th November, with the curtain up at 8.00pm.

The Torrevieja Costa Lions Club are promoting this event and all profits from the show will be donated to Reach Out in Torrevieja. There will also be a Prize Draw in aid of Reach Out who help the homeless in the area. The musical will be performed by the accomplished Footlights Theatre Group from Calpe and is guaranteed to be a most enjoyable trip down memory lane. Over the last few years they have delighted local audiences with productions of Cats, Guys and Dolls and Fiddler on the Roff, so this is musical night not to be missed.

South Pacific was originally performed on Broadway in 1949, running for close to 2,000 performances followed by a film version in 1958 that reached a world wide audience. There are numerous songs in the show that have become popular

El Palmar

EL PALMAR exists for, and because of, rice – the growing, cooking and eating of it.

WELL IT would, sat as it is at the southern tip of the Albufera, Valencia’s freshwater lake and one of the Spain’s biggest producers of the paella’s main ingredient.

Virtually every second building is a café or restaurant but it’s still a pleasing place to wander around, especially if you are building up an appetite. But be warned, if you want to eat there get there early, because it’s so popular that there’s even a coach park.

A secondary business in El Palmar (as it is all around the lake) is the boat trips, out into the lagoon. It’s worth taking one for the few euros worth of tranquillity, and don’t fret about your sea legs; fall out almost anywhere on the water and you’ll only end up knee-deep; that’s why the boats have flat bottoms.

One of the main quays sits alongside the tall octagonal tower of an old rice drying factory; stand at the centre of the bridge that crosses the canal beside it and nothing disturbs the tranquillity apart from a gentle breeze rippling the surface of the dark green water and your hair. Well, it doesn’t ripple mine, because it’s little more than a stubble, but I can imagine it being pleasant nonetheless – which shows how good a memory I have!

At the end of the quay is what looks like an old village washhouse but it’s where the boats are run down a ramp into the water. There’s usually a couple there under repair so you can get an idea of the structure and see why they manoeuvre so well in the shallow water. It’s also the place where old chaps sit in the shade swapping fishing stories. (It’s probably a bit boring swapping rice stories. Can you imagine it, “By gum, I missed a good stalk the other day - half a pan-full if it was a gram - would have made a great photo to hang on the wall…”) Wander into the main square and you’ll find the pretty little Iglesia el Niño Jesús del Huerto, a dolls housesized place, gilded and marbled like a child’s confection, but worth joining the ladies and the priest at mass (not another man entered while I was there, obviously more happily employed swapping yarns of fish and rice at the boatshed or in one of the dozens of cafés in the square).

The narrow street that runs parallel with the main square, Carrer Jesuset de Huerto (‘Jesus’ and ‘Huerto’ seem to be much liked in El Palmar) is accompanied for much of its length by another canal, with shadowy trees overhanging it and views across the rice fields. Vivid green in June as the plants break free of the sodden earth, by August the crop is highlighted by golden touches, almost ready for it to be harvested in September.

It’s a pleasing walk along the Carrer and I always think it’s a great shame that some of the cafes don’t stick a few chairs outside their back door for those quiet souls who care for nothing more than a sit in the sun, cool drink in hand, watching the world and the water go by. As a friend once commented, “The Spanish are uncomfortable in a conversation that doesn’t include at least twelve raised voices.”

Just up the street, at number 56, sits an elderly chap at a small workbench at the door of his garage, where he quietly makes models of barracas, the steep-pitched houses peculiar to the area, carefully weaving fine strands of rice stalk to make the thatched roof. Alongside, he has a display of his other objects d’art; boats, agricultural instruments and fishing nets, a historical world in miniature and a far better pastime than fretwork or burning house names onto bits of wood with a poker. If you’d like to see a full-size barraca there’s one on Calle Vicente Baldon, which looks amazingly out of place surrounded by the modern buildings.

Oliver’s words should be set in stone MY PERSONAL battle to rid the world of everything that is even loosely related to television reality shows is a regular feature in the column and you could well have noticed that movies containing gratuitous violence are also one of my pet hates, and boy have I found myself quite an ally in the shape of none other than top US film director Oliver Stone.

Yes Stone directed ‘Platoon’ and that was a violent movie, but the films he is referring to come from the world of fiction and not fact. Speaking to Forbes magazine Stone said: “The fantasy violence of Man of Steel, the Dark Knight trilogy and others have infected American culture … I’m not saying don’t show violence, but show it with authenticity.” Strong stuff indeed, but it gets quite a lot beefier than that! … Like for example: “…the way it’s infected the American culture is that you young people believe all of this s**t.’… Batman and Superman? You’ve lost your minds, and you don’t even know it!”

‘Transformers’ were next in line for Oliver’s vitriolic assault when he said: “I think there might be an Iron Man, and there could be some good stories about war profiteering, some good moral tales … like what the comics put out!”

Then he reached for the jugular again when he added, “But when you’ve reached this height of technology level of a Michael, of a Transformers, I don’t understand the meaning of it and the reason for it.” This is not about just wanting to get back to the days of Supermen changing in a telephone box and Batman and Robin ‘ZAPPING!’ and ‘KERPOWING!’ all over the place, it’s about believability and not selling us a load of high-tech tripe that has replaced a proper storyline and characters with a real character.

Celebrity clips WHEN I read that Daniel Radcliffe had been confirmed to play Sebastian Coe in movie ‘Gold’ I was a wee bit surprised, then when I saw the two mens’ photos I realised one very good reason why he got the part. The film charts the buildup to the 1980’s Olympics and Coe’s legendary battle with Steve Ovett, a contest that was full on blood and thunder and then some … can’t wait!

This item goes back into the gratuitous violence area and highlights a very worrying knock on effect. Cameron Diaz, Milla Jovovich and Meryl Streep have been tipped to star in ‘The Expendabelles’, and no! That was not a spelling mistake! The movie is yet another cheap shot at dollar hunting and plans to ride on the back of The Expendables starring Sly, Arnie, Van Damme etc... Wake up! … Stop watching this bilge!

Rumours have been abound that some comedy quiz shows are set up and very bravely comedian Ross Noble has come out and stated in the Radio Times that Mock of The Week is rehearsed. “There are no notes in a wide shot of ‘Have I Got News for You’ … wide shot on Mock the Week? There are A4 pages spread out if you look at the desks in front of them … oh dear, oh dear!

There’s a 19-year-old singer guitarist called Jake Bugg who is starting to pop up all over the place including on Alan Carr’s Chatty Man show recently. He was on the same show as Britney Spears and was amazed at how all her hangers-on treat her like royalty, telling the Daily Star: “They should let people be who they want to be, not turn them into some superstar.” Well said, laddie.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Conditions part 2 WE FINISHED last week’s article with the unlikelyl proposition that I might win the lottery and subsequently travel round the world. “Si yo ganara la lotería, viajaría alrededor del mundo.” As you can well imagine, this did not happen, and in fact the sentence itself already gave you that clue “If I won the lottery, I would travel round the world”.

The whole thing sounds highly unlikely!

This is an example of a “second conditional” sentences. Let’s go back to our original examples as I think they are clearer.

- “If he studies, he will pass the exam” (First conditional – likely to happen).

- “Si estudia, aprobará el examen”.

- “If he studied, he would pass the exam” (Second condition – unlikely to happen).

- “Si estudiara, aprobaría el examen”.

Now for the third type of conditional. Here is it, in English first: - “If he had studied, he would have passed the exam”.

In this sentence we have a condition that is completely impossible

to fulfill. Why is it impossible? - because it refers to something that is already in the past and therefore cannot be changed. He didn’t study therefore he didn’t pass the exam. The only thing we can now say is that “if” he had studied, things would have turned out differently. It is a structure which expresses regret about the past, looking back and saying how things could have turned out differently if certain conditions had been fulfilled. Now this is how we say this in Spanish – hold tight …

- “Si hubiera estudiado, habría aprobado el examen”.

This sentence contains two compound verb forms. You don’t want to know what the first one is called in Spanish – but I feel obliged to tell you that its name is the “pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo”. It’s made up of the imperfect subjunctive of the auxiliary verb “haber” plus the past participle of the main verb. The second compound form is called the “condicional compuesto” or the “conditional perfect” and is made up of the conditional form of “haber” and the past participle of the main verb.

That’s it – I refuse to get any more complicated than that. The best thing is not to express any regrets, ever. Just don’t look back at all, and you won’t have to say one of these sentences. Next week we’ll have a change of topic – I promise.

Diwali celebrated in style at Punjabi Palace ON SUNDAY 3rd November at 7pm, the celebrations for Diwali began at Punjabi Palace in Los Montesinos.

Diwali or the ‘festival of lights’ is a five-day Hindu festival falling between mid-October and mid-November.

For Hindus, Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year. The name ‘Diwali’ is a contraction of ‘Deepavali’ which translates as ‘row of lamps’. Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps to symbolise the triumph of good over evil.

The night began with diners indulging in a choice of starters such as mixed pakora, chicken pakora and onion bhajis, followed with the hearty main course portions always experienced in Punjabi Palace, served with the obligatory rice and naan - it would be rude not to! Of course everyone over indulged! And for diners with any space left, dessert and coffee was served.

As everyone feasted, entertainment was provided by local DJ and entertainer Steve Ansell who kept the party spirit alive with popular party

tunes. Next the Bhangra dancers put on a fabulous show of authentic Punjabi Bhangra dancing. Even Preet from Punjabi Palace donned a traditional costume and participated in the dancing. This got everyone into the Diwali spirit and fun was had by all.

Chicken, leek and mushroom pie • 400g boneless chicken thigh meat, cut into chunks • 2 rashers of streaky bacon cut into strips • 1 medium onion roughly sliced • 2 medium leeks, trimmed and cut into 5cm lengths • 200g button mushrooms, quartered • 1tsp dried mixed herbs • 250ml chicken stock • 100ml milk • A 500g pack of frozen puff pastry, defrosted • Oil • Salt and pepper • 1 egg, beaten 1. Pre-heat the oven to 190°C. 2. Fry the bacon pieces in a large frying pan then set aside.

Fry the chicken pieces in the same pan with a little oil until lightly browned. Remove from the pan and set aside.

3. Fry the onion, leeks and mushrooms until just soft. Return the chicken and bacon to the pan and add the herbs. Season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with the flour and mix well then stir in the stock and milk and heat until the mixture thickens.

Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a shallow ovenproof dish and allow to cool.

4. Roll out the pastry until just large enough to cover the dish then lift on top of the dish, pressing down the edges.

Brush with the beaten egg then bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

Serves 4, Preparation time: 20 minutes, Cooking time: 35 minutes.

Flash player download HI AUNTY: I was trying to watch a streamed football match, and it would not work unless I downloaded a flash player, so I was informed.

So I downloaded a free one. I have AVG protection, but a program called QVO6 arrived with it. I have tried to remove it with no success. I have removed all the other programs that came with it, with uninstall, but this one will not go! Can you help please Pete Aunty says: Sometimes, on ‘free streaming’ sites you get an ‘advert’ saying you do not have flash installed, when you have, and clicking on the ‘advert’ installs some ‘nasties’, which can be a pain to get rid of.

Firstly, you need to this program from Add/Remove Programs list.

Click the ‘Start’ button -> Settings -> Control Panel ->

Add/Remove Programs. Here, you should look for anything that could be related to Qvo6.com and click ‘Uninstall’.

But that is not all. You also need to remove Qvo6.com from your browsers.

You need to do this as Qvo6 will have changed some of the setting in the browser to that affect your home page and your search engine settings.

How you do it depends on the browser you are using, and these instructions are for Internet Explorer: Click the right mouse button over Internet Explorer’s shortcut (it should be on your Desktop), and choose ‘Properties’.

Locate ‘Target field’ and eliminate all text, which is related to Qvo6 and is entered after ‘C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ iexplore.exe’.

Open Internet Explorer: go to ‘Tools’-> ‘Manage Add-ons’ -> ‘Toolbars and Extensions’.

Here, look for Qvo6 and click ‘uninstall’. Now open IE ->

Tools -> Internet Option -> General tab. Enter Google or other address to make it the default start page.

Some advice...

HI AUNTY: I enjoy your column every week, many thanks for the tips etc. I am an avid internet surfer with good internet security installed. Never the less I got caught and ask you to please warn other readers of a Malware program that has become quiet prevalent in hidden innocent downloads.

It’s called ‘SNAP.DO’ and is a program that changes the internet program used to surf such as ‘IE’, ‘Safari’ or ‘Chrome’ etc. by re-directing the default search engine ‘Google’ or others to Snap.do’s own search engine, fully laced with adverts, popups and other crap. Changing the address back to my default engine in Network options made no difference. This program is insidious and hard to remove if you do not know in which downloaded program it is hidden.

I had to remove my last week’s downloads, scour my Program and Features file, removing all unwanted advert programs, then a full scan of registry and drives with Avast followed by another full scan with Superantispyware until I finally got rid of it. Keep up the good work.

Third party conflict HI AUNTY - hoping you can help: My laptop is now some two years old running Windows 7. From day one I have had a problem with Windows office starter (English) 2010. When using Windows Word the program persistently stops responding. A window pops up informing that the program will attempt to retrieve the document, and it normally does, but it is a pain in the proverbial as this can happen numerous times whilst trying to write a letter. Robert Aunty says: Usually Word stop responding when there is a ‘3rd party add-in’ that is causing a conflict. In the ‘Word Options’ you have the option to stop, or uninstall these addins: 1. Open Word.

2. Click the Microsoft Office Button: click Word Options, and then click Add-Ins.

3. In the Add-ins box, identify the add-in that you want to enable or disable and note the Addin type located in the Type column.

4. Select the Add-in type in the Manage box and then click ‘Go’.

5. Select or clear the check box for the Add-in that you want enable or disable and then click ‘OK’.

Failing that you could always forget MS Office, and download and use OPENOFFICE. It is free and does everything and more that MS Office does - and is also able to use MS office file formats!

The acid test EIGHTH-PLACED Man United host top-of-the-table Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday and it’s a game that’ll go a long way to determining how the rest of each club’s season will pan out.

The Gunners are flying at the moment and a convincing win over Liverpool last week will have given them a great deal of confidence. United on the other hand have endured a stuttering start to their season and need something special to happen quickly if they’re going to be in contention around medal time in May. Victory for Arsene Wenger’s men would cement their position as genuine title contenders this year and set them in good stead for what appears to be a tough run of fixtures over the next few weeks while United would surely drop out of the title race because the gap would then be eleven points and certainly too tall a mountain for the Manchester outfit to climb.

A United victory however, would leave them just five points off top spot, would generate some much-needed momentum and Arsenal may begin to worry that upcoming home games against Everton and Chelsea, and Man City away, will eat further into their lead.

So Sunday is a massive game for both clubs in my opinion and as such, unfortunately for us neutrals, it probably won’t be a classic because Arsenal can afford a draw but, if The Gunners leave Old Trafford with maximum points, then David Moyes and United can kiss this year’s Premier League trophy goodbye!

THE WAY the handicap system works here in Spain has long been a mystery to many of us expatriates who are used to the way things used to work in calculating handicaps in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

We all know golfers who have falsified their handicaps with increases that are unjustifiable in an effort to gain an advantage and win a tournament but last week I was involved in a conversation with a touring professional on the driving range at a tournament and he asked me how so many low handicap golfers here in Spain keep their low handicaps when they cannot shoot below 80 to 85 in tournament play.

This is an even bigger mystery than the cheat who increases his handicap to help him win. There are advantages to clubs having low handicap golfers on their books and the image of the golf club is seen as higher if there are a number of low handicap golfers playing there. Usually the low handicap players will go to a club where they get tougher competition in an effort to improve themselves as golfers and this to me is perfectly

Now I know that we are all prone to having a bad day and scoring over our handicap but really; when was the last time any of us shot thirteen or more over our handicaps when sober? These so-called elite players do yet hang onto scratch handicaps; can anyone out there explain why to me so that the next time I am asked such a question I can give e reasonably accurate answer?

THIS WEEK saw the club at the Embalse de Argos for the penultimate time this year. The water level has not dropped since the last time we were there. However, the temperature certainly has, as it was 10º when we arrived. Although the wind was chilly, we were sitting along what we call the ‘sunny side’ and it certainly felt like a summer’s day. The water temperature has dropped as the weights show, but at least the fish are still feeding especially the Barbel. As said before, these are getting bigger and still, even when cold, fight to the net.

We again had a visit from the Seprona (Environmental Police) who checked every angler’s license and insurance and also our Murcia Federation permission.

So as said a couple of weeks ago, if you do not have a license and insurance you are running the risk of being caught.

It is now a bit lighter in the mornings since the clocks have been altered, making pegging that much easier; the water is still fishing quite well with the three top weights reaching double fig-

ures with feeder and maggot proving to be the best method of the day.

Life cars Citroen C5

THE SIZE of a boot is extremely important, especially if you have a growing family, like me.

And so it is disappointing that so many hatchbacks and saloons lack in this area. Even the Jaguar XJ, whilst having a seemingly long one, does not have the necessary depth for bulky items.

It is therefore refreshing to find that the Citroen C5 has a cavernous boot, large enough to swallow a cumbersome tandem pushchair as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. I am impressed. Externally the car’s rear doesn’t look ugly either, in fact on approaching it early one morning, from the side it looks like a Mercedes C-class thanks to the similar styling. It is also helpful that the rear seats split and fold as well as featuring a useful hatch for long awkward items to run the length of the car. When I tested the Jaguar XJ last week I was surprised that this model didn’t have split fold rear seats owing to the fact that they were electrically adjustable.

My eyebrows remain suitably raised when I open the doors of the C5 and find the rear windows fitted with sun blinds that easily pull up and down: they effectively shield little passengers Harriett and Heidi from the bright sunshine that has finally decided to appear during the road test.

Inside there is a feeling of being fairly low to the ground thanks to its stance on the road, helping it feel quite sporty. It does seem to be quite a wide car and despite possessing reasonable spatial awareness I find manoeuvring it a little tricky although I’m still able to reverse park into a fairly

tight spot without trouble.

As regular readers will know, I suffer from a bad back and when I tested the Jaguar XJ last week I foolishly over-used its seat massage function, which has subsequently resulted in severe back pain. Exercise, as always, is helping but this experience has made me even more critical of driver’s seats. The electrically adjustable and heated one in the Citroen could do with a better lumbar support but that’s my only complaint.

The C5 is a capable family car and provides a comfortable ride. However, it is also quite a sporty saloon thanks to a sports mode function, which provides a more punchy performance while its sports suspension switch hardens the ride. The sixspeed auto box can also be used as a manual for greater driving pleasure.

A little way into the test I realise that the striking steering wheel rotates around a fixed column complete with cruise control and radio functions.

This takes a little getting used to, especially if lazy hands rest on it. I have not driven another car with such a unique steering wheel.
