45 million for Mar Menor THE COMMUNITY will invest 45 million euros to revitalize the Mar Menor with a “satrategic and comprehensive plan that makes this area a reference project point”. by Keith Nicol

MURCIA WAS one of three areas selected by the European Commission to develop a regionalised project to improve opportunities for lagoon communities. The Chief Executive stressed that the achievement of Murcia has been one of the three Spanish communities has ensured that the European Commission approved the development of “a specific project” which will build on the creation of regionalised Investment Instrument (ITI) of the European Union. Pedro Antonio Sánchez, president of the Community, made some remarks before starting the political meeting in a Governing Council deliberative held in San Pedro del Pinatar, where he was treated “with monographic”, the project of the Mar Menor and the European funding that will be received up to 2020 and can be increased in the coming years to develop “integrated

action regeneration, economic revitalization and environmental protection in this environment.” “We have a unique place and a unique destination in Europe with extraordinary features and with a growth potential of sports and tourist activities supported by this ecosystem, which will translate into jobs and economic opportunities,” said the president of the Community. “The Mar Menor is a clear example of the need for integrated management and mainstreaming policies carried out for improvement, conservation and growth opportunities,” said the president, adding that it will be “a strategic project for this term.” Pedro Antonio Sánchez noted that any action to be developed, either private or public initiative “has to have a multiplier effect.”

Damage to the front door which the trio had opened with a hammer and chisel

by Keith Nicol THE WOMEN already had a criminal history in France and were taking advantage of the summer to commit crimes from people travelling, by stealing things from the entrance to properties. Agents of the National Police arrested the three French women, aged between 28 and 36 years, all of whom have been living in Torrevieja but moved to Murcia to commit the fourteen crimes they were arrested for. The arrests occurred after a neighbour on Calle Mar Menor in Murcia observing the three through the peephole of her house, watched the women try to force their way into the adjacent house by prying the front door open using various tools of the trade. Agents of the Unit for the Prevention and Reaction arrived and quickly intercepted them as they tried to escape. The policemen saw that the door frame of the house was broken and in the inner courtyard was a chisel and screwdriver. Close by was the car waiting for their escape, with for-

eign registration plates, and upon inspection they found a key hidden which allowed them to enter the car. In the vehicle they found a document to rent a house in Torrevieja (Alicante) on behalf of one of the detainees and a fake, double bottom in the boot. After consulting the French authorities, the three were detained. They had numerous criminal records from France, namely one for 39 arrests for burglary. The three detainees were engaged in travelling from house to house, looking for empty properties that were not well protected, moving from the coastal area to interior cities to take advantage advantage of the absence of tenants who were away for the summer. The three were arrested and charged with a total fourteen house robberies. The operation was conducted by agents of the Police District of San Andres, along with the Prevention and Response Unit of the National Police Headquarters of Murcia.

Barbecue and sparks cause two fires in Quesada

CIUDAD QUESADA, ROJALES, suffered two fires on Monday around noon, at two villas that affected four gardens, according to the City Council in a statement. “The quick action of the agents of the Policia Local prevented the fire spreading to five homes”, they announced. The fire still affected the gardens of four houses, despite the quick action of firefighters and local police The first fire occurred at noon on Avda Aeropuerto. Apparently the fire originated from a barbecue being prepared at one of the villas affected, while being used by the owner. Meanwhile, the second fire occurred about 4:15pm at a property on Calle Leon, near the previous fire but completely unrelated. Regarding the second fire, a statement said that; “All indications are that the fire originated due to a spark created during the installation of natural gas.” Operators from the installation company and Policia Local put out the fire using extinguishers and water from a pool. Firefighters from the Vega Baja attended both fires to smother the flames and stop them spreading further. They also noted that during this time of year, with the lack of rain, that the vegetation, trees and bushes around the entire region are tinder dry and the slightest spark, a carelessly discarded cigarette end, even a pair of glasses just sitting on a seat or park bench, can capture and focus the sun’s rays and start a fire. With safety the major concern, although not law, those cooking with Barbecues should consider having a home fire extinguisher handy, in case such an incident should occur, which in these circumstances, could quickly get out of control.

Further strike action planned RENFE TRAIN drivers continue to press for strikes on 4th, 11th, 14th and 15th of September.

4 days of strikes have been organised by Semaf

by Jeanette Rice THE TRAIN drivers union, Semaf, has organised the four days of strike which will affect drivers, travellers and goods because of a lack of progress with talks between them and the Renfe Group. As reported previously in the RTN there has been a shortage of staff for the train services for some time, with the average age of train crews being 54 years and the limits being placed for either reaching the age of retirement or medical fitness now becoming an increasing concern. SEMAF has been stressing for a considerable time that these issues need to be urgently addressed along with the whole human resources policy of the Renfe Group but all talks have failed to reach any agreements.

SEMAF also report that the situation is exacerbated even further by unilateral decisions being take by the Directorate of Goods that, given the lack of staff applies opposing view to the provisions of existing labour laws which are creating negative working conditions for the driving personnel. Although the strike dates have been set, there is a possible light at the end of the tunnel as the union has posted on their website that there may be another alternative to the strikes, although it does not say what these may be. As with all strikes, it is very possible that the dates may be cancelled at the last moment, but it is advisable to look at other alternative for travel should the situation not improve.

Golden Visa scheme tweaked by Jeanette Rice

THE GOLDEN Visa scheme, offering limited residency to non EU citizens has been tweaked to hopefully improve investor numbers. The scheme, similar to those operated in Portugal and Hungary offers a limited form of residency, and a long-term path to citizenship in return for certain types of investment, including an investment of €500,000 in Spanish property. The scheme was introduced by the current Government in 2013 to attract foreign capital to Spain, and stimulate demand for property after the crash, however in the first 15 months only 530 investors came forward, mainly from Russian, China and the Arab nations. Compared to the 2,200 foreign investors that Portugal attracted and the several thousand that Hungary received, the Spanish scheme seems to have stalled. One large agent specialising in the Chinese market or the Spanish Golden Visa said “Chinese investors don’t feel welcome in Spain, everything is an obstacle and there are more attractive schemes on offer from other countries”. This combined with Spanish banks making it more difficult for Chinese investors to open accounts and transfer money from abroad under the anti money laundering laws has meant that it has become increasingly difficult to do business. Key improvements in the scheme are: – Residency permit now also includes right to work in Spain – Common law partners plus grown up children, economic dependants, and parents now covered – Six month visa available on the strength of a deposit contract (arras) and funds in Spanish bank – No need to visit Spain to renew the visa, and only have to renew every five years, as opposed to every two years – Residency permit can be requested from Spain, rather than having to get an investor visa from abroad first – Investors not forced to leave Spain during process or requesting or renewing.

Ticket dodger bites off conductors ear

SPANISH POLICE are searching for a man following an incident that occurred on a Renfe train on Saturday. The train conductor was working his way through the carriages, checking fares, when he came across a man who would not produce a ticket. The fare dodger then proceeded to bite off part of the conductors ear on the sub urban commuter train in Barcelona. The man then proceeded to jump off the train before police could arrive at the scene, although passengers and the injured employee have been able to give details of the attacker and a composite sketch has been produced by a police artist. The train conductor has undergone surgery to reconstruct his ear, although it is too early to say if this has been completely successful.

Reckless driver arrested

IN A car chase that could have been from a film, Guardia Civil Trafico chased a reckless driver, at high speeds for more than 30 kilometres before finally being able to cut him off and stop the chase. by Keith Nicol THE GUARDIA Civil detained the driver who drove through a police control point. He was eventually stopped and charged with reckless driving, alcohol and assault on a law enforcement officer as he also tried to evade taking a breathalyser test. Murcia Guardia Civil arrested the driver of a passenger car along the Puerto de la Cadena (A-30), who fled a breathalyser control point in San Javier (RM-19), and finally collided with another vehicle and assaulted two police officers before being arrested. The incident happened on Sunday morning, when agents from the Traffic Sector Murcia established a checkpoint for alcohol and drugs on the RM-19, in San Javier. One of the vehicles, selected by the policemen for testing suddenly took flight, accelerating suddenly in the direction of Murcia, ignoring stop signs, and speeding along the road. One Guardia Civil Trafico, Alfa Romero gave chase while noting that the car was being driven recklessly at a rate significantly higher than the maximum allowed and doing all kinds of banned manoeuvres, like overtaking and movements in non-regulation zig-zag fashion, forcing several vehicles to take evasive manoeuvres to avoid a crash. Upon entering the A-30, heading towards Albacete, due to the excessive speed, the driver lost control, crashing into the median, and although he tried to continue, he collided with yet another car and the Guardia Civil blocked him off from any further action although he continued to ram into one of the cars he had driven into in trying to escape. Having travelled more than 30 kilometres on the run, and

Guardia Civil finally caught a reckless driver after a 30 km chase

because of the dangerous attitude of the driver, the Guardia Civil tried to arrest him. However the driver then put up strong physical resistance, leading him to attack the officers. Once arrested, he was charged with three offences, driving recklessly, driving under the influence of alcohol and refusal to submit to alcohol screening tests beverages plus the crime of assaulting a law enforcement officer. The 26 year old driver from Murcia underwent the first breath tests, which showed a reading of more than twice the maximum rate

but by refusing to complete the test was also attributed the crime of refusing to undergo alcoholic testing. Last weekend, over one thousand drivers were checked for Alcohol and Drug use. Trafico tested a total of 1,261 drivers, of which 41 tested positive for exceeding the alcohol limit ( 3.25%). Among these they arrested nine drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol, and the rest have been denounced for administrative offence (BAC). Trafico also found nine drivers who had consumed narcotic drugs or other prohibited substances.

Continued from front page... HE EXPLAINED that “they operate under a unified command” to co-ordinate all actors, governments, agencies and groups involved in the Mar Menor, which also will reduce the time to conduct the proceedings. The measures envisaged will be grouped around three main pillars: environmental preservation of the Laguna del Mar Menor, the development of necessary infrastructure and boosting economic activity in the area. To this end, actions will be implemented as the execution of hydraulic and road infrastructure, preservation of coastal lagoon and to boost fishing and tourism, among others. The regional chief executive also visited the site of the Nautical Club of Lo Pagan, which will allow “the renovation, modernization and new berths” for fishing and pleasure boats, with an investment amounting to 1.1 million euros. The work involves dredging, the construction of an inner dock, which will be used for fishing inside and nautical sports on its outer side, and the installation of platforms and docks for yachts and boats waiting and loading. The Mar Menor has ten ports, of which 9 are sports and Lo Pagan is the only only mixed use facility for fishing and sports.

The couple was spotted inside a vehicle parked on the dirt road that leads to the back of the site last Thursday, said Catalan police in a statement.

“Given where they were, the officers searched the vehicle and the two occupants. They found tools used in archaeological excavations,” said the police. “They also found several coins, brooches and other metal objects, covered in rust and earth, in the pair’s clothes.” Officers also recovered two metal detectors and two picks from the car,

Drunk Brit watching the stars at night A BRITISH holidaymaker in Malaga was rescued from a bridge in the Costa del Sol after a night on the town on Saturday night. by Jeanette Rice FIRE FIGHTERS and the Guardia Civil were called to the scene around 2am after worried passers-by reported that there appeared to be a man asleep on the top arch of a bridge. Malaga has been celebrating its annual summer festival and it is thought that the British man lost his bearings due to the amount of alcohol he had consumed. People gathered underneath the sleeping man and tried to rouse him with no success so called the emergency services. The Bridge of the Germans, proper name Santo Domingo Bridge, was gifted to the city of Malaga by the German people in gratitude towards locals who helped rescue sailors from the shipwrecked vessel Gneisenau in 1990. It has now jokingly been renamed as the “ninja bridge” on social media which has shared the image worldwide. The police officers were also unable to wake the sleeping man and following an attempt to reach him by using an extendible ladder the fire crews eventually managed to rouse him and return him to the ground using a cherry picker. The man, who is 40 years old was formally charged for disorderly conduct and returned to the hostel nearby where he was staying. A spokesperson for the police said “the most difficult thing was not the rescue but waking him up, this was a first for us”. It seems that the British love to entertain the Costa del Sol locals as last month a near naked holidaymaker was filmed by a Spanish driver napping on top of a speeding car on a busy dual carriageway near Marbella.

Fines continue for mobility companies

LOCAL POLICE in Benidorm continue to issue fines for the mis-use of mobility scooters in the town. Whilst there are still many scooters being hired out to those that do not meet the current regulations officers are continuing with their policy of fining offenders, albeit adhoc! As usual the British media have picked up on the story with most of the tabloid press reporting on “boozy Brits” trying to save on taxi fares. Unusually, the media are correct on this occasion, and hopefully the message will get through to people back in the UK that the word mobility scooter actually means what it says, you only need to hire one if you have mobility problems.

For people around the world who have visited Benidorm the unique motorcycle that Guillermo rode around the resort with his music playing had become an iconic part of the town. Guillermo had worked for the parks since 1989 and was often seen touring around the busy streets on his high promotional bike throwing sweets and balloons to passers-by and chatting to anyone who wanted information or just to pass the time of day. The bike even featured in the popular ITV programme “Benidorm” as the character Mick Garvey, wearing a gold suit rode around the town for a special scene in the programme. Telefonica’s meal for two

CAMBRIDGE FX found themselves under a little unexpected and unnecessary pressure over the past few weeks due to the problems with their phone lines. by Keith Nicol WITHOUT ANY warnings, their phone lines dropped down to just two operating lines and the busy global, financial, money movers, exchange and payment solution providers suddenly found themselves under pressure and with phone problems. After negotiating the various menus and waiting times demanded of them by their service provider Telefonica, they finally got through to the Technical department and a solution, although at a price, seemed to be in sight. Chris Wakeling explained: “We only had two phones working and we needed more. Telefonica advised us that we would need a new line installed. We agreed to go ahead with their proposal and they installed the second line on the evening of Friday July 31st. When we retuned on Monday morning, instead of having additional phones, the opposite happened and we went from two to zero. None of our phones worked, Telefonica advised us that this was because they, Telefonica, had decided to change the phone lines to digital, and because we had analogue phones, none of them now worked.” While one would think that a phone Giant such as Telefonica might have checked this out before installing the additional lines, and making sure everything worked, one can

only imagine that it was Friday evening, the August holidays were about the begin and circumstances led to Telefonica making a bit of a mess of things. Chris continued: “We had to buy a Centralita and four digital phones, which we did that very day at a cost of 1,600€. All seemed well. However, it then took until August 19th for Telefonica to find the time to visit us and install the unit. We contacted them literally every day and were always told that an engineer had been assigned and would be with us, but stopped short of telling us when. Thus we couldn’t put an advert in the paper as he could have come any day. The problem is now resolved and we also have a Plan B, should we face any future issues.” One thing that did please Chris that came out of the situation was the amount of client loyalty they experienced, something they never bargained for. Chris noted: “But the good news is we did have a lot of clients either email us or actually come to the office to let us know our phones were not working. I have all the names of those clients and as a way of saying thank you for not just giving up when they couldn’t get through, I would like to pay for all of those loyal clients to come and enjoy a meal for two at the Sunrise Restaurant next door to my office. If they

The vouchers do not expire, so they can use them whenever they want, and if any of them wish to take me along as their plus 1, I would be more than happy to join them.” Chris wanted to thank everyone for their

patience and loyalty in a situation that was completely out of their control, but that hopefully now has been permanently resolved. More information all the services that Cambridge offer can be found at: www.cambridgefx.co.uk or give Chris and the team a call at 965 327 093. And enjoy your meal.

Fiddler on the Roof

My immediate neighbours engaged a man to do some work on their roof. Thinking that perhaps it was a necessary repair after a high wind I checked the three of my five roofs which were easily accessible and found all were in good condition. Two hours later, on completion of my neighbours’ job , the workman came to me and assured me that he had noticed that at least one of the roofs I had not been able to check was in need of urgent attention. He offered to go onto the roof, take photographs, and quote me a price for the repair. He brought a ladder, hauled his 100kg body onto one of the three checked roofs - and I then heard tiles being moved as he scrambled around. When I climbed his ladder I found that a number of the tiles on the three roofs I had previously checked as being in good condition had been pulled away and some had even been inverted. I ordered him to leave immediately and, using my own ladder, I found a total of 21 tiles had been disturbed on the three roofs and a further 10 on the other two unchecked roofs. Included in this count were six which were broken and must be replaced. Beware, scams come in all shapes and sizes. Haydn, Moraira.

Both Spanish and French people living abroad have life long rights to vote in their own country, so why not British people. We are still subject to many UK government laws, eg. the amount of pension we can take from our SIPPs or QROPS, UK taxation at source for ex public sector employees,European health cards etc. We still hold British passports. Many of us watch British television, download British newspapers and are only a couple of hours plane journey from Westminster. Maybe Graham Spurrier would like to tell us whom he would like to govern his pension, taxation etc. You are at present only allowed to vote in Spain in local elections, something that a few International Residents do, which was highlighted in the recent elections?? My personal reply is to your correspondent if not happy simply don’t apply to vote !! Yours sincerely, Roy Parker (Mar Azul )

Shipwreck treasure find AN EXPEDITION to the wreck of Las Mercedes, led to the recovery of a cannon and eleven pieces of high archaeological value. by Keith Nicol THE DIVERS made oceanographic and archaeological studies detailing the state of the remains of the ship and its cargo. This was the first underwater excavation reaching down to depths of more than eleven hundred meters by a Member State of the European Union The scientific expedition to the wreck Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes, was organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, in collaboration with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and the Spanish Armada. The Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, Inigo Mendez de Vigo, was present to see first hand all the details and preliminary results of this research, which is the first underwater excavation to more than eleven hundred meters deep by a State member of the European Union. After the previous preparatory work, last August 14th, the ship ‘Angels Alvariño’ left the port of Vigo. It stopped in Rota (Cádiz) to collect the rest of the team of scientists and technicians

who have made this pioneering archaeological campaign. Throughout the week of the campaign, they charted an oceanographic map (‘bathymetric’) to measure the variables that could affect the conservation of the wreck: salinity, currents, changes of natural, both biological and geological, among others. They also plotted an archaeological map of the ship and its cargo. As part of these studies, a total of 12 metal objects were brought to the surface. They were chosen for being at risk of disappearing, due to their fragility, their location as well as for allowing documenting aspects of life aboard the frigate. The items brought to the surface included: an 80cm bronze cannon, pestle mortar of gold; a silver candlestick; three spoons, fork and three dishes, all made from silver. The underwater excavation was performed at a depth of 1,130 meters. However, the system that was used for removal of soil deposits differs in terms of its accuracy and reliability commonly used in land

archeology. Numerous pieces of data obtained in this campaign will be the basis for preparing a second expedition with which to

track the condition of the wreck. Finally, in honour of those who died in the sinking of the ship in 1804, the team placed a bronze plaque

with the text: “In memory of the victims of the frigate Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes who died on October 5, 1804.”

Elche inspiration for Jay Silverman by Keith Nicol

FILM PRODUCER Jay Silverman swapped Hollywood for Elche and has been on a voyage of discovery through the city to find places of interest for future film production. Silverman is a film producer who has worked closely with such world famous directors as George Lucas. Step by step, Silverman had been on an upward climb in the industry and chose Elche as his latest destination in his search for inspiration in their upcoming film work. Jay Silverman has directed many different television series such as “The Cleaner” and TV specials “Django Unchained” and “Twelve years of virtue.” Currently, his career focus is production management, with films like “Girl on the edge”. His trip to Elche gave him the opportunity to enjoy the sites of great cultural and historical value such as the Palm or Alcudia. In this regard, the film director commented on the positive image around the country after his visit beforehand to Madrid. “I found some beautiful architecture; there are streets and buildings that are really welcoming, not to mention the food. Spanish cuisine is amazing,” noted Silverman. About Elche city, the film producer stressed the inspiration he has discovered while visiting various infrastructures of great value in the city, such as the Basilica of Santa Maria and the Palacio de Altamira. However, Silverman stressed the importance of people in search of ideas for their projects. “What inspires me is a site with people and how they live and behave,” Silverman acknowledged. On the other hand, the film director said that during his visit

to Elche he had met many people who would be a perfect fit for a film offering spectacular human stories. Silverman said that “people are exactly alike all over the world. A film that portrays people well, will be able to reach into any part of the world and unite those people.” Regarding trends in cinema; film production changes with time along with the changing tastes of the viewers. In that sense, Silverman said the “impatience” of the spectators, is that they are now seeking action scenes when they go to see a movie. However, the film producer stood strong behind European cinema and American independents among the different styles of film, where he thought film producers and directors worked more with ‘people’ projects. Silverman, who started in the business as a photographer, fulfilled his dream of becoming a filmmaker to allow him to tell their stories to the public. Elche was, on this occasion, one of his chosen cities in his plan to film new project destinations.

Shipwrecked in the pool EIGHTY FUTURE SCUBA divers got a little taste of what it’s like to dive on a shipwreck on Wednesday. Throughout the day the municipal outdoor pool was turned into a genuine forum for underwater archeology in which eighty kids between 7 and 15 years, split into a morning and afternoon session enjoyed the project “The Uluburun shipwreck: A Shipwreck In Your Swimming Pool. “ In the pool was one of the maps plots, a replica, of the original size and accuracy of the oldest underwater archaeological site in the world that is located in the Mediterranean: the Uluburun, a wreck wrecked off the coast of Turkey at the end of the Bronze Age. It’s estimated that the Cargo vessel, dates back to about 3,400 BC and was only discovered in 1984 by a local Sponge Diver, just of the coast from the tourist resort of Bodrum, when it was not much more than a sleepy village, rather than the tourist destination it is today. The activity was led by a team of professionals from various disciplines, who first explained how the ship was discovered and explained how a wreck site was mapped. The children were then appointed specific tasks and items they had to discover over the wreck, such as pottery, swords and vases. The replica of one of the most important underwater sites in the world became a wondrous playground for the young adventurers who for the first time in Torrevieja were offered an innovative and fun learning space with the municipal pool. Councillor for Sports Pablo Samper visited the pool to follow the adventures of these young archaeologists who left the pool excited about the experience and with plenty to talk about with their friends and family.

Mosquito blamed for viral infection

HEALTH CHIEFS are on the alert for cases of chikungunya virus after a Gandia man developed the illness after being bitten by an infected mosquito – the first such case in Spain.

A tiger mosquito

by Jack Troughton ALL PREVIOUS cases of the tropical illness have been contracted abroad but despite developing symptoms on a trip to France, it is believed a tiger mosquito bit the victim before he left home. Named after its striped body, the tiger mosquito – Aedes albopictus – was first detected in Catalonia in 2004 and despite attempts to eradicate the best has expanded its territory down the Mediterranean coast. Chikungunya virus is not a fatal disease. Commonly found in tropical areas of Africa and Asia – the tiger mosquito is from South East Asia – symptoms include a fever, headache, and joint pain. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control

(ECDC) has investigated the Gandia case and underlined “this is the first chikungunya case reported from Spain without travel history to endemic areas.” WARNING The report notes that the tiger mosquito has been present in Valencia since 2013 – many Costa Blanca town halls first issued warnings on how to combat the pest last summer and repeated them this year. The ECDC said cases of the viral disease had been diagnosed in Gandia before because the climate was “conducive” to transmission between humans. However, these were all “imported” cases.

And the body warned Europe was “vulnerable” to transmission of chikungunya in areas “where mosquitoes capable of carrying the disease are established and where the climate is conducive to transmission.” In Valencia, the health authority has begun an investigation to find breeding grounds of the tiger mosquito and to avoid further transmission of the disease, which has no known specific treatment. The infected man has fully recovered. In 2014 there were 266 recorded cases of chikungunya fever in Spain, all imported. This year 86 people have been diagnosed with the mosquito-borne disease, 18 of those were in the Valencia region.

And she really wants to work towards changing and strengthening animal welfare laws in our province,” Sue said. “It’s incredible how animal welfare is moving forward in Spain and it’s so wonderful to see politicians who are so passionate about animal welfare. It’s really very encouraging for us. We don’t feel like we’re on our own any more.” The centre, which relies solely on donations to fund its work, now houses more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from terrible situations of abuse and neglect. The rescue centre is desperately seeking

JB Just Brass

THIS WEEK sees JB Brass Band return to rehearsing after a short Summer break. However, not every member will be returning to the stand, as the break also saw the retirement of one of it’s oldest and founder members. Don Craven, Cornet player has decided to retire from playing at the ripe old age of 74. He started playing at the age of 12 when his Dad gave him a cornet in Blackpool. Don has had a long and international playing career. He played with the Fleet Air Station band during the war and returned to the Isle of Man on discharge before later emigrating to Canada and then California. He retired to Spain 20 years ago and has played with many groups as well as being one of the founder members of JB Brass Band. Don will be sadly missed on a Wednesday, not only for his contribution to the sound of the band but for his ability to get to the bar first!! The Band gave him a fitting send off at their local watering hole in San Miguel and presented him with an engraved hip flask and also a bouquet of flowers for his long suffering wife Carol. The Band has returned to rehearsing in 35 dergree heat, in preparation for the new season. Relaunch of Expat Services by

Jennifer Cunningham

RECENTLY I have become aware that there are a number of companies now offering Ex Pat Services, all with their own individual approach. Some of these companies worry me by straying into areas where they lack expertise, for example how is it possible for a company to offer advice on insurance when they are not DGS registered (Spanish Insurance Authority), without the experience, knowledge and the authorization to do this. As far as I am concerned it is a potentially dangerous place for untrained sales people to be in. Approximately 8 years ago, I decided that it would be a good idea to help the Ex Pats in selecting a good English speaking solicitor, accountant, and gestor to assist in the legalities of living in Spain. Over recent years Spain has found it necessary to fall into line with the rest of Europe, making far more people legal and accountable, which in turn improves the tax revenue. Therefore, of course, many professional companies and individuals are now offering a range of these services. Over the years I have been approached by various financial services companies, wanting to work alongside me and my company, but I was always very concerned about the legality of some of these businesses. Although it has improved over time, there are still causes for concern. As you are no doubt aware, there are new regulations regarding private pensions, which is extremely good news for those approaching retirement. Being able to manage your own pension fund and no longer being restricted, does enable a better return on your investment but it also has opened up the door for unscrupulous

individuals and companies, who are not regulated by the FCA (Financial Control Authority) in the UK, together with either Gibraltar or Malta. As I have mentioned before, the companies and the individual advisors have to be regulated by the FCA to be able of offer pension advice and I am aware that this is sometimes not the case. It is vital that you seek professional advice, for example if there is a pension that is matured, now is not a good time to think of moving it due to the financial crisis caused by the Chinese. Obviously, the company and its advisors that I work alongside are all fully regulated and able to offer very correct advice with independent investment funds. The first consultation is free of charge, and before giving pension advice on an individual basis, the consultant has to complete a very complex form and submit it to the FCA for approval, prior to carrying out any investments on your behalf. The cost to the company for following this procedure is very expensive, therefore this must be taken extremely seriously as it is there to protect you and your hard earned money. Please do not be tempted by ridiculous interest rates and smooth talking sales people. Within Ex Pat Services, we also offer currency exchange, travel insurance, life insurance, health cover, funeral plans and fast track mortgages. The mortgage company, in particular, can save you a tremendous amount of stress and time. Of course, both Ex Pat Services and my insurance offices will be working in

conjunction with each other and all your general insurance needs are available. I will also be promoting commercial and liability insurance products, as I feel these have been undersold in the past. The thought of self-employed people not carrying liability insurance is frightening when you think of the problems that can occur during a normal working day. Contact us for a customized quotation. The commercial policy offers the advantage of a 24 hour service, with contents replaced as new and payments can be made in installments, with a basic or optional cover to choose from. The sales team who will be specialising in Ex Pat services will be making contact with offices, shops and independent businesses to explain the benefits of having the correct liability cover and protection. We know that your business is important to you and suggest you talk to one of our consultants for more information. Communities are becoming more aware of the need for protection against claims and damages. We offer an excellent community insurance with a top up cover with discount for the owners properties where they are not covered by the community policy. All of the offices will be offering Expat Services, along with our other products. The Head Office for Expat Services, with private appointments available will be the Els Poblets office on 96 647 5562 and the email address is info@jennifercunningham.net for further information.

Careful with changes concerning the guarantee on purchases of properties ‘off plan’ SPANISH LEGISLATION forces developers who sell properties off plan to guarantee the amounts paid on account by the buyers consumers, through a bank guarantee or insurance policy. THIS LEGISLATION should mean that Spain is one of the safest countries in the world for buying properties ‘off plan’ (still unbuilt). Unfortunately, in practice, many abuses have been committed by developers and promoters, so it is always essential to employ proper legal due diligence before agreeing to a purchase of this type. Recent Spanish legislation, specifically the Law 20/2015 (which modifies the Law 38/1999), of Construction “Regulation”, has amended the law making it less in favour of the consumers’ interests. From these changes, we highlight two amendments that we do not like because they limit and affect the rights that the consumers and buyers had before: 1) Under the amendment, developers selling off plan must ensure the money paid from buyers, from the moment the development has obtained the building permit or license. In other words, the new wording seems to exclude the obligation to guarantee the amounts paid before Building license is obtained, which was not the case previously. Given the above, it is absolutely inadvisable to pay any money or buy any property off plan until there is a building license in place, or sufficient guarantee provided to the purchaser covering the money to be paid.

2) There has also been a new time limit added (limitation period). Now, after a period of two years, starting from the failure by the promoter or developer in its obligation, that is from the agreed date for delivery and handing over of the property, if the buyer-consumer does not request for the termination of the contract and reimbursement of the money paid, the bank guarantee will expire. It should be noted that the above changes will take

effect from the 1st of January 2016. Therefore, those who have purchased prior to this date, should not be affected by these changes. However, those who plan to buy off plan from January 2016 onwards, should take every precaution and make all necessary legal checks and verifications through their lawyers. For any questions about buying properties off plan, or claiming for lost money, contact us.

Time for action, don’t you agree?

by

Dave Diggle

International Financial Adviser

I AM sitting by the sea in my native Jersey, after visiting family and friends. THE WEATHER has been appalling of late and I am looking forward to some sunshine again upon my return to the Costa Blanca. I notice that my excolleagues who all work in finance here are stressed and scrambling for money and more than a few have commented that Spain is obviously good for me as “I look well and remarkably relaxed”. Should I be “remarkably relaxed”? The markets have just had a major wobble again, although China has just cut its interest rate and the world stock markets have had a boost . But for us at Blacktower, the overwhelming majority of our clients are cautious either by nature or at this advanced time in their lives they have opted for our most cautious investment on offer that can still offer a “real” return. The product in question was built for ex-pats in Spain (although it is held outside of Spain) and has a smoothing system that does not feel the full force of market bumps, hence, I haven’t had a

single e-mail from clients worrying about the value of their investment – because they continue to maintain positive value. Here’s an honest comparison of the best bank returns published in my favourite Sunday newspaper this week: Secure Trust Bank: 3.08% 5 years fixed. Secure Trust Bank: 1.98% 120 days fixed. RCI Bank: 1.65% Easy access You may be wondering just who these institutions are, offering the above? So contrast these returns against our clients receiving 5%p.a. from an institution that

every British or Irish reader will know and respect, with capital accessible immediately if required in an emergency. I’ll say it again: Time for action? Call us. We are here to give you impartial, independent investment and financial advice (minimum investment just £20,000 / €25,000). Thoughts on Spanish gardening SEVERAL RECENT columns in RTN have focused on the desirability of making the house more user friendly by cutting out the use of chemical cleaners etc. by

Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

BUT THEY have ignored the health risks of the garden environment which is even more important than the house if you spend most of the day most of the year in the fresh air of the garden. We are led to believe that most expatriates move to Spain with the intention of a less stressful and healthy outdoor life than the one experienced in northern Europe. However that is not always achieved and at times the design and maintenance practices of the garden are often the cause. I therefore list some of the things to be avoided. Don’t take on a garden beyond your physical capabilities now or in ten or twenty years time. For most a thousand metres will make more sense than five or 10.000. If you have purchased an enormous piece of land for isolation and peace at a low price just develop a manageable area around the house and leave the rest to go wild within the local fire regulations which may require you to strim it once a year. If you take on a new garden with heavy Spanish clay, steep slopes or hidden rocks or often all three get fit before you start especially if you enjoyed a sedentary life before coming to Spain. Get used to working early and late to avoid the midday sun and wear a woven straw hat which has a cooling effect. Use ergonomic tools, especially sharp Secateurs and mattocks and minimise the use of a fork , spade and pickaxe. Get help with the heavier jobs.

Grow healthy vegetables from day one so that they can be enjoyed while the garden is carved out - which could take a number of years. Like wise plant a few fruit trees early on for the benefit of their blossom as well as fruit. Avoid the need to constantly use insecticides and fungicides by avoiding over watering plants, especially the more drought resistant plants (see Part Four of our book Your Garden in Spain). When you have to spray use ecological products as explained in each of our books. This will help maintain a chemical free environment and garden shed. If you are allergic to pollens don’t plant pines, bottlebrush , acacia and male carob trees. Plant plenty of aromatic herbs for their aromatherapeutic effects as well healthy culinary and medicinal uses. We will discuss this in more detail in our next article. Avoid spiky plants that can cause accidents alongside terraces and paths or avoid altogether especially if children are likely to visit. Ensure you retain or plant trees and large shrubs for summer shade and sheltered winter sun. Wear knee pads or kneelers when doing low work. Keep a container of cool water handy when working especially on hot days. Warm up with gentle exercise on cold days before starting to garden. Traditional earthenware water containers are useful in this respect. Chose a peaceful unpolluted location. Ensure that there are no trip on paths and terraces.

When gardening in the heat wear a straw hat and knee pads for any work low down

Kambalache Charity Event Costa Calida

An elephant is killed in Africa every 15 minutes, a rhino every nine to 11 hours, as they are slaughtered for their tusks and horns. However, Rosa Mansell, Peter and Lorraine Allin, Brenda Bates, Gillian Ashworth, and Hugh Epsom, and some “caring friends” are hoping people on the Costa Blanca will become involved in a fight back against poaching as it reaches epidemic numbers. And on Sunday 4th October they have organised a charity walk, joining the Global March for Elephants and Rhinos being staged in more than 100 cities around the world to raise awareness of the plight of Asian and African elephants and rhinos. There is also an opportunity to attend a screening of the film ‘When Giants Fall’ for the first time in Spain on Thursday 3rd September, Wednesday 16th September and Wednesday 23rd September. RTN was told: “Nobody needs ivory trinkets or religious amulets. More than 35,000 elephants are killed yearly for their tusks. A rhino is slaughtered every nine to 11 hours for its horn – which does not have medicinal properties. “The trade in elephant and rhino body parts is fuelled by greed and driven by the drugs trade and terrorism. “We balance on the brink of seeing the last of these magnificent creatures. Their only hope for survival lies in an immediate end to the ivory and rhino horn trade. “Unless action is taken now, we will lose these majestic, highly intelligent and emotionally sentient creatures forever.” The animals are threatened by a combination of poaching, habitat loss, and human-elephant conflict. If you would like further information, see our Facebook page. Want to line dance? Ann and Roy’s line dance class re-commences at the Camposol Culture Centre on Wednesday 2nd September at 7pm. Are you ready for this? It’s completely free.”

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

Reluctant to leave My husband regularly verbally abuses me and our children. My parents have said we can stay with them. The trouble is that I love my husband, even though he can be vile. He has said countless times that he will change, but never does. He blames his childhood - his father hit him. He is desperately sorry after he has shouted at us. He says he wants to get help, but doesn’t know what to do. I am reluctant to leave. This is not a good environment for you and the children to live. Think seriously about your parents offer of staying with them. You don’t need to treat your leaving as permanent - suggest a trial separation of a few months to allow you all time to gain some perspective. In the meantime, your husband must get professional help, from a trained counsellor. If he can combat his behaviour, then perhaps, in time, you could all try living together again.

Why aren’t they thinking of us?

My son is getting married, and has said that the wedding is to take place abroad next year. I think this is all his girlfriend’s idea. He says she has always wanted to get married on an exotic beach, and he wants her to have her dream wedding. They know that my husband cannot fly, for medical reasons, and so we cannot attend. Also, his Nan won’t be able to make it. Her parents will be going, and a lot of other family and friends. Why aren’t they thinking of us? Aren’t they being a bit selfish? I suppose when it comes down to their own wedding, people should do what they want. I understand your reasons for being upset though, because weddings are family occasions after all. You could try speaking to your son about how upset you are, but try not to make this about yourselves. Say you appreciate and understand them wanting to get married in a lovely, far away location, then maybe suggest a blessing at home afterwards, and a small reception for family and friends.

 Progress is finally but slowly taking things to a very satisfactory conclusion. You have had your say, and though this was stating the obvious, the situation is now transparent and workable by all concerned. This week shows you turning your attentions to an event you have a hand in and Mercury trysts Neptune to ensure that you are supported all the way. Venus beguiles Mars and this reflects on your current mood. There is no time to be lost if your good intentions are to reach fruition. Somehow the message has got around that you are willing to negotiate; but that means that everyone takes a long hard look at the job in hand and that reality is the focus of all who are truly concerned. Mercury may be sending a mixed message because actions with Neptune bring some doubts into the equation. Weighing up the pro’s and the con’s it is time to take stock, and although time will tell it is a surety that some will fall by the wayside. This is a week of activity and your positive powers may be tested, but then you always play to win! Somebody needs your help right now, but they are finding it hard to attract your attention and avoiding any confrontation. As Mars begins the week taking on Pluto there is no immediate solution available, but time will tell, and you will be examining things in your own inimitable way. Good comes from your inspiring and resolving dealing, face on. The Sun opposes Neptune and this causes you to make the changes you may be reluctant to make. Time was when you were more flexible and pulled out all the stops, but tread carefully now if you are to avoid hurting someone’s feelings. Time will tell in the end, and your patience above all will be tested, but harmony and peace would not go amiss! Finances take a tumble, but it is nothing you cannot deal with. Current aspects with Mercury and Neptune are urging your investment in something you are currently unsure of. Do not be bullied into anything you may later regret, but do prepare also for an unexpected purchase, so don’t splash the cash unless you carefully balance the books. Venus faces Mars and all is very fair, they say, between love and war. You are surprised that something has turned out the way that it has, and that you have to take sides. If you knew then what you know now you would never have got involved in the first place. A game is being played out and determination will both prevail and support you. You were warned, but like a moth to a flame you were drawn to fight fire with fire right now. A warring Mars takes your side, but Venus is the victor this week when empathies are triggered and you find the love and compassion in your heart to just move on. You know it makes good sense to make a very clean breast of it all! Wayward Jupiter cannot reverse fortune this week as you are supported by an ebullient Pluto, keen to bring some stability and equilibrium into your currently complex life. Decisions will have to be made, but right now the message is to sit tight and don’t rock the boat....you will get your cake, for sure, and you just may be able to eat it too. Take advice like a piece of cake. Those who have your real interests at heart know only too well how resourceful and positive your energy is, and just what you are capable of too. In surprising them you may just end up surprising yourself, and in the true light of day you can then justify all you know that you now really have to do! Your inner psychic self is telling you to be very unafraid of something you appear to be dreading. You have everything and everybody on your side and you should know by now where your strengths lie. As Mars trysts with Venus there are mixed emotions flying around, and until you learn to take advantage of them things will inevitably plateau. Neptune is hand in glove with Mercury, and for sure channels of communication are now open and ready to go. Do not hide your ever expectant light under a bushel, and be prepared to make sweeping changes if they are what is right for you just now. Current relationship issues will be resolved if you were prepared to walk a mile in each other’s shoes.

Come September

MUCH ATTENTION has been given just lately to the proposed happenings for September, and my mailbag has been asking me some very difficult questions as a result. September 13th has been earmarked for the crash of the US dollar, and this will of course rebound worldwide on global currencies and stocks. I have mixed views on this, but unlike others, who see anything as profound as this off as a conspiracy theory; we have to understand that many of such theories have, unfortunately, rung only too true. If this wasn’t enough to be going on with, later on in the month of September comes alledged actions with Planet Niburu and various suggestions see an impact of sorts on Earth. NASA has said that such an action was impossible, but this organisation has taken on full responsibility for global spacial events and is not accountable to anyone. So there we have it, nagging doubts surround the onset of Autumn, and by recent mails so many you are drawn in to the panic movement which thrives on disaster and gloom. We cannot be Doris Day and sing, “Que sera, sera” either if there is the slightest chance of oncoming predictions of diasters. Actions speak louder than words, but words right now are all that we have. I know we all survived 2012 and lived to tell the tale, but many of the proposed actions at that time were rendered as null because of the pressure of good spiritual people, just like yourselves. Facing facts and working with Spirit are two very intuned and positive things that anyone has a right to do. Just as actions of worldwide terrorism are generated to cause fear and stress, the action of spirituality is designed to bring faith, truth and love into the World. Which would you rather have? Those who work on the dark side of things know what they are doing is wrong but then life cannot be all whiskers and kittens either. Don’t get me wrong, I am not taking the middle ground here but I am promoting the positive energy of the passageway of spiritual time. We have to be poised and ready, and then, and only then can we be a part of whatever is to come, heralding the options that will be necessary. Many spiritual people have been very concerned, for some time, lately with the fifth dimension and are bracing for ascension when and if necessary. The call to raise soul energy is one that brings action and result whenever there are proposed changes afoot to each of our daily lives. When the going gets tough the tough get going, and we are more then just a turn of the cheek after a slap on the face when push comes to shove. The global expansion of Spiritualsim is bringing in so many people. Whilst some religions are failing to bring a call to faith and are hampered by solely embracing past values; Spiritualism offers more then just hope out there on the horizon. It is comforting that nobody falls over on this their journey of life nor are they left to pick themselves up, unless they so wish to. Love is being lost all around us and yet, as a Spiritualist we are progressing and are surrounded by love, protection and understanding. We always have been, and we always will be, open to change and resiliant to the very last, if that is what it will take. So, will Worlds collide as George Krell said to his bride? Are we waiting for the great debt of the USA to be shaken and stirred as stocks plummet into cyberspace? Will there be a Rocky Horror Show here on Earth? Who really knows? Whatever does happen the Spiritual World will ascend and rise to the occasion!

If It’s Your Birthday Kenny‛s Postbag KENNY WHAT is a blood moon? Jay (sms) This Week

Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com

This, for you, is a great time of both learning and adjusting, since your skills need to be honed, tried and tested. Be very sure before you embark on something that appears to be right up your street, but that may bring complication.

In a Lunar Eclipse the shadow of planet Earth crosses over the face of the moon. The final of four blood moons will bring a totality of shadow cover which will appear as red, rather than black, as it seen from Earth’s atmosphere. Look out on September 28th for the final total eclipse of the fourth kind...it will be a fully total eclipse and should be redder than red!!

Music festival comes to Benidorm

THE IBERIA Festival of Benidorm is set to welcome many national artists on September 5th. by Jeanette Rice

Last years iberia festival

With Kiko Veneno headlining the festival other confirmed performers are Rosendo, Rosario and La Union, with over 6,000 expected to attend. The event, which will be held at the Plaza de Toros in the town, is a pop-rock festival with event organisers taking on board suggestions from previous years attendees. Improvements on past events are that the drink

prices will be kept reasonable and that people will be able to leave and return to the festival, although this will be limited for security reasons. The festival will also feature a well know graffiti artist from Valencia who will paint the artists whilst they are performing and then auction them to the audience. For further information on the event and how to get tickets go to www.iberiafestival.com.

Stompers sell-out again NEW ORLEANS jazz band the Bourbon Street Stompers are set to sell out this autumn’s concert on the Costa Blanca – but there is the possibility of a second show. by Jack Troughton Demand for tickets means there are very few seats left – despite there being no advertising outside of organisers Concerts Costa Blanca’s mailing list – for the concert on Friday 30th October. However, music fans hoping to see the band from Essen in Germany can call 96 574 9023 to reserve seats for a matinee performance currently being considered for earlier the same day. The Stompers are now in their 22nd year and were first brought to the Costa Blanca by resident Norman Dunnington in 2009. They won a standing ovation from a capacity audience of 1,000 people at the Palau in Altea and have returned to play Teulada, Torrevieja, Alicante and Valencia – all to rave reviews. And this year, as well as performing in Teulada, the band will play the magnificent Auditorium de Palma de Mallorca on

Sunday 1st November. Two years ago Concerts Costa Blanca arranged for Joshua Stewart to sing with the Stompers. The powerful tenor, who has just graduated from the prestigious Curtis Institute in Philidelphia and had sung at the Auditori de Teulada-Moraira a year earlier. Joshua was fittingly born in New Orleans and sang with jazz bands before training as an opera singer – he returned with the Stompers last year and he and the band are looking forward to making it three years in a row. Tickets for the Teulada concert are 17€. The Auditori box office is open Wednesday to Saturday 11am to 1pm and 6pm until 8pm; or book at Teulada Town Hall or the Espai La Senieta, Moraira, Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm. Alternatively, book online at www.instanticket.es or call 902 444 300.

Hurrah!!

Cara is certainly not the Role-Model model

THERE WAS a time when boys wanted to be train drivers, and girls wanted to become models. There weren’t too many classified ads for train drivers, but there were certainly plenty ´Looking for Models, ´’although, I suspect some of those were a tad on the dubious side. Something went wrong with the glamour of modelling along the way, to the point where nowadays if you´re a stick insect and have a look like you dropped a fiver and found a penny you´re destined for big things. Cara Delevingne is one such creature who when speaking to The Times last week said “I´m not doing fashion work anymore, it was like, fight and flight for months, just constantly on edge.” She was born in London 23 years ago, began modelling when she was 17, and won Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2012 and 2014. She won a minor role in movie Anna Karenina in 2012 and has also appeared in romantic mystery Paper Towns, and this seems to be the way she now sees her future. Cara then took the interview with The Times to a new level when she added “Modelling made me feel a bit hollow after a while, it didn’t make me grow as a human being, and I kind of forgot how young I was, I felt so old … fashion is about what’s on the outside, and that’s it, there’s no searching, it’s just creating pretty things,” powerful words that give us quite a stark look inside the world of the catwalk. Cara´s third role in movie ´Suicide Squad´ goes on release in August next year, and having found the confidence to declare her love for her musician girlfriend St Vincent with her 18 million Instagram followers, it really is looking like Cara and modelling are dunski.

Video of the Week! Watch cockatoo Jazz dance to Bruno Mars’ latest hit Parrot Dances to Uptown Funk; then get a few aaww´s going when you see a father´s birthday prez for his one year old Rocking Speeder Bike!

Eighteen years ago Alan Partridge (Steve Coogan) pitched mockumentary style show Hostelworld to the BBC, but ´not interested´ was their response. Now out of nowhere Chris Eubank has made a video trailer of a show along similar lines called Youth Hostelling with Chris Eubank. In it ex-boxer and super dandy Eubank eulogises “The key thing in life is to be humble, just be little: that way you have nowhere to fall.” Love you Chris.

Music Notes

KEITH RICHARDS; You either love him or hate him! If you´ve remained neutral here´s another shot for you. In an Interview with Esquire magazine the Rolling Stones guitarist said “The Beatles sounded great when they were the Beatles, but there´s not a lot of roots in that music, some people think ´Sgt Pepper´s Lonely Hearts Club Band´ was a genius album, but I think it’s a mishmash of rubbish! Love Him or Hate Him? ´FLIGHT OF the Conchords´ are a superb music comedy duo who have won top awards in America, New Zealand where they are from, and the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival in 2003. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement´s popularity has now reached Hollywood with talk of a movie, “We´ve actually started writing one,” Jemaine told Indiewire,”but who knows if it will ever be made!” Aw come on fellas! If you have $300,000 and like to be scared out your wits, get on a plane to Pennsylvania and buy the house where Silence of the Lambs was filmed. Scott and Barbara Lloyd who´ve owned the house for nearly four decades tell us it’s not the spooky moth-ridden home you might think, but is a bright cheery house with flowery wallpaper and a swimming pool, but it doesn´t have a dungeon. Oh forget it then, I need the dungeon!

Next month Queen Elizabeth will become the longest serving monarch having been on the throne for 63 years. Eighty-nine year old Elizabeth takes over the long-service record from her great-greatgrandmother Queen Victoria on September 9th, and says she has no intention of succumbing to the European fashion for abdication. Prince Charles, 66, is already a record-holder as Britain’s longest-serving heir apparent, so it’s as you were Charlie boy.

“ Quote of the Week

Johnston McCulley wrote the first novel featuring the Zorro character in 1919. According to the Hollywood Reporter a script has been written for movie Zorro Reborn which will feature our hero in his cape and mask “punishing cruel politicians” and “aiding the helpless.” Zorro has appeared in more than forty films, including a pair of swashbuckling features in 1998 and 2005 starring Antonio Banderas. Filming begins in March next year.

Black US comedian Marlon Wayans on making his version of Fifty Shades Of Grey, “Fifty Shades Of Black” is about Christian Grey being black and rich, but we don’t know exactly how he got his money, and he’s a really bad lover.” Rockin!!

Help FAST to help you FAST COULD possibly save your life one day, or that of your friends or family. by Keith Nicol This volunteer organisation are there to help you, but they can’t do everything alone and need a little help back. So what do you need to know about this special group. FAST Responders are on duty to give first aid and support to the people of Camposol 24/7; as they have done for the past 4 years. FAST is only funded by voluntary donations from the residents and visitors as well as the various businesses on Camposol. FAST, as an organisation is the envy of other urbanisations. This is due to the dedicated volunteers who give up their time freely. It is not only Responders who

will be on call 24/7 at the end of a phone to give first aid and support but there is also a dedicated group of Fundraisers who do a really important job in raising funds to allow this service to continue. FAST also have a help line phone available, so add this to your contacts on your mobile phone as you never know when you might need it: 634 309 899, to allow members of the public to make enquiries regarding FAST events or obtain other information about FAST. If you might be interested in joining them, why not give the number a ring. FAST are always looking for new Responders to help provide this

Big Welsh Carl Thomas and Glenn Ashby, both Responders and much more

service. No previous experience is required. Training is provided by authorised and approved trainers. Being a Responder or a Supporter allows you to meet other people who are like minded. Visit the FAST Stalls on Sector B on the 2nd and last Friday of each month. FAST Members look forward to seeing you there to: answer any questions, sell books to you – 3 for €1, take

bookings for events, outings and coach trips, check your blood pressure and more. Have you spotted any strange nurses on Camposol? Watch Out. Observe the strange way they walk. They are certainly worth looking for and trying to find. They will put a smile on your face for the rest of the day. Those dreadful Camposol rumours surely cannot be true. If

they approach you do not be afraid or run away. Just kindly drop some money into their buckets and they will be able to continue providing this unique to Spain, service on Camposol, providing emergency first aid prior to the arrival of an ambulance. Please help FAST to help you. More information from: www.fastcamposol.com or email: secretary@fastcamposol.com.

Random freezing and closing down Hi Aunty, I’ve been having problems recently with my laptop closing down of its own accord, sometimes after just opening up, and sometimes whilst in the middle of working on a document or programme. Also I have experienced it locking up, so that the only way of returning to normal is to remove and replace the battery and then restart the laptop. Your advice would be welcome. Best regards, Stephen Aunty says: Random close downs and freezing can be down to a few things. It could be a corrupted windows system, or bad drivers. It could be you have bad software installed, or bad drivers, so look in Installed Programs and see if there is anything that is installed that looks as if it should not be. If it only happens when using one program, it could be that program is corrupted, so uninstall and reinstall that program. It could also be overheating of components. If you are experienced, have a look at the “event log” in “Event Viewer” which can give an idea as to what is happening to the PC when it is closing down. However, as is common with laptops, it could just be a poor or failing battery. Reply: Hi Aunty Virus, MANY THANKS for your email, and advice. I will certainly look into the areas you have brought to my attention. I know that the laptop does tend to get a bit warm, even the keyboard, but assumed this was normal for laptops.

Email issues

Hello Aunty, I am having problems with emails on my laptop which is operating on Vista Home via Outlook.com. For some reason I am not being allowed to forward mail or even write a new email. A message pops up on the new message screen as follows:This content cannot be displayed in a frame To help protect the security of information you enter into this web site, the publisher of this content does not allow it to be displayed in a frame. Does this mean I have picked up a virus on the laptop or is it Outlook playing silly games. I did a quick scan with Avast but they found nothing of the kind. On a different matter MSN has defaulted to Spanish when previously it has remained MSN uk. How do I get back to English? I think my IP address is here in Spain. Thank you in anticipation of your kind assistance. Dennis. Aunty says: It is nothing to do with a virus, or outlook. It is to do with your browser - i presume you are using Internet Explorer to access Outlook? (you do not say which browser you are using!) In which case you will need to go into the options and clear the cache and history, and if available “reset” the browser. Or use a different browser - like Chrome or Firefox. Your homepage will be set to MSN.com. .com sites look at your ip address and send you to your local website. IF you change your homepage to msn.co.uk, you go automatically to the UK MSN site.

Past Continuous: Use of pronouns

Whenever we talk about Spanish verbs we always say that the personal pronouns (yo, tú, él, ella, usted, nosotros, vosotros, ellos) are very often not used in standard sentences. Their use is generally for extra emphasis or contrast and also to clear up ambiguity or misunderstanding. This can happen in the third person between él, ella and usted for example, and also “usted” is added at times to make an utterance sound more courteous. When it comes to the past continuous tense however, we find we have to say the first person singular pronoun “yo” a little more than usual for the simple reason that the form of the verb is exactly the same as in the third person singular. In other words “Hablaba con el vecino” could mean “I was talking to the neighbour”, “He was talking to the neighbour” or “she was talking to the neighbour”. Well actually it can also mean “you were talking to the neighbour” using the “usted” form of the verb as well! Comments like that usually make students throw up their hands in horror and say: ”How on earth are we supposed to know which one is which?” The answer is always the same – the context gives us 90% (or more) of the clues. In the worst case of ambiguity in a real life situation we could always find ways of clarifying who is meant, by pointing if necessary!

Here is a small sample of writing using the past continuous tense which hopefully demonstrates how in most cases the sense of the words indicates the identity of the person once that has been established. So there’s something for you to think about until next week when I will translate it and pick up any details for comments. See you then.

Coral Clásica Javiense The international choir Coral Clásica Javiense will begin its autumn rehearsals on Friday, September 4 at the Insituto Musical, Avda. Juan Carlos I, 55 in Jávea. The choir will practice weekly the Christmas Oratorio (part 1-3) by J. S. Bach. The performance with soloists and orchestra will take place on November 29, the first Sunday in Advent. Francesz Estévez will be in charge of the general conducting. When the international choir Coral Clásica was founded in 2003, the founding members’ commitment was to perform high-quality classical music, and that is what the choir has achieved indeed. Up to the present day, there have been numerous accomplished concerts triumphantly applauded by the audiences. Ever since Francesz Estévesz, the founder and director of the Orchestra Marina Alta, had also accepted to conduct the Coral Clásica Javiense, it has been possible to perform excellent musical works accompanied by the orchestra as well as by young Spanish instrumental and voice soloists. The singers of the choir come from everywhere in the region of the Marina Alta, that is from Altea in the South to Rafol in the North - a colourful mixture of nationalities: British, German, Dutch, Swiss, Spanish … Meanwhile the choir is well established in the regional scene of music for its major annual concerts, but also performances on a smaller scale are received with favour by the audiences as, for example, the joint singing of Christmas Carols in the Church of Pedreguer together with the organist Prof. Vincent Josep Giner. The choir is happy to welcome new permanent members. We also encourage those who just want to join for the singing of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, provided they can read music and/or have some experience with choir singing. More information will be available under www.coralclasicajaviense.es or Tel.: 966 457 076 and 676285493.

“BBC Panthers” League Winners of the NSL

The photograph shows a delighted Panthers squad (although somewhat wet) following the final match. The “Panthers” were away to Javea Jets and needed 4 points to win and retain the league title, which they scored in the triples matches, but half way through the pairs games the heavens opened up and although the teams tried to play in the rain they were called off in this the last match of the competition. The result standing gives the BBC Panthers the league title for the second year with Javea Sharks in second place and the BBC Cougars in third. The Campbell Lamont Leagues - Now underway for 2015/16

THE BIGGEST Amateur Golf Competition in Europe - Official. By Tony Myles IT HAS grown from very humble beginnings just five years ago when it was created by Campbell in order to give the various societies an exciting and free-to-enter competition as a means of expressing his appreciation for their support. What has happened in the meantime is the popularity of this event has encouraged numerous other groups to register their interest and to compete for the major prize. The event starts as soon as the previous year has concluded in June and so it is already in full swing. Nevertheless there remains ample time for new entrants to join in, as all that is required is for each group to nominate at least four of their regular meetings as “Campbell Lamont Golf Leagues qualification events”. From these events each group will identify their two best players and it is these two who will go forward to represent their team in the

regional and national semi-finals from where the top sixteen pairs will be invited to participate in the Grand Final at the La Sella Golf Resort near Denia . The important factors for new entrants is to understand that there are no overheads to be incurred as the qualification events are all part of the groups regular schedule. Most of the major societies in the Costa Blanca will be participating and when their successful pairs make it to the final they will find that this has now become a truly international occasion with representatives emerging from all areas of Spain meeting players from Wales, Scotland, Norway and Iceland. Well over 10,000 golfers aiming at the goal of the luxury weekend in Spain. AND WHAT A WEEKEND! Non-local finalists will be collected from the airport and ferried to the five star Marriott where

they will be staying for the duration of the golf finals. The first evening will include a welcome dinner during which the playing order will be drawn. Then two days of golf with two rounds per day will follow to determine the overall winners. A presentation dinner on Sunday evening will once again be arranged in the Marriott ballroom and the various prizes will be distributed. With the excellent support of Continental Wealth Management , Campbell Lamont will be picking up the tab. No wonder it is already the biggest and most popular amateur golf event in Europe. If you are not yet registered then there is still plenty of time remaining. No registration fee and no additional games. Massive prizes on offer and an expensespaid weekend of golf at the La Sella Golf resort. As last year’s winners were heard to say “It’s a no-brainer!” Register now by emailing info@clgolf.es.

Passwords Tony M - Do you ever have issues with your technology? Campbell - I think that everyone suffers from that at some point. It is part of modern life. Tony M - One area that is always annoying is passwords. Campbell - Well until they change the security issues they will always be necessary. Tony M - At least I have resolved the problem of having to remember them. Campbell - How have you done that? Tony M - I changed them all to “INCORRECT”. Then if I forget and get it wrong my PC says “Your password is INCORRECT.”

Kia Picanto THERE IS a common thread in literature, art and design. That is that ideas are borrowed and then reinvented, sculpted into a new and unique offering.

Artists are a good example of this. Take Robert E. Wells and David Farren, for instance. They both paint landscapes, cityscapes and street scenes in a similar impressionistic style. Their work draws inspiration from the great French painters like Monet and Renoir, who introduced this approach in the 19th Century. Clearly, the actress Felicity Kendal appreciates this style because pictures by both Wells and Farren can be found in her private collection. So it goes to show that just because that genre already existed it is perfectly acceptable to revisit and craft it into something equally, if not, more appealing. This approach is popular in car design, too. Look at the side of the new Kia Picanto, city car. What do you see? It’s an Alfa Romeo, surely. The whole design reminds me of the Alfa 147. Chrome door handles favoured

by the Italian manufacturer further add to this opinion. As with my thoughts about art, this is no bad thing. The Alfa 147 was an attractive little car but it was a temperamental Italian. It was calling out to be rediscovered and enhanced. This observation goes to show how far Kia has come in the space of a decade. Consider that this Korean car maker produced the bland and characterless Kia Pride between 1986 and 2000 with hardly a change in its styling (if you can call it that) during that long period and it is surprising and welcoming to see the change that has taken place. The tiny Picanto is up against tough competition from the Smart Car and the Renault Twingo. In this sector though, it’s all about the money and Kia blows the competition away with its OTR price, which includes air conditioning, electrically operated windows and wing mirrors as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz.

The piece de resistance is a seven year 100,000 mile warranty: you only get four years with a more expensive Renault. An attractive vehicle, the Picanto is sure to melt even the coldest heart. Distinctive alloy wheels, again reminiscent of designs favoured by Alfa Romeo, set it off, adding to the sense that there is something a little different about this car. Alfas have always liked their juice and so Kia drivers will be pleased to know that not only can they enjoy its attractive looks but the Picanto returns around 50mpg. Its five speed manual gearbox is pleasant enough and the one litre engine doesn’t complain when driven hard, which is necessary if a decent pace is required. Price: 12,112€ 0-60mph: 13.9secs Top speed: 95mph Power: 68bhp Urban economy: 52.3mpg Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz
