New youth programmes for San Pedro THE MAYOR of San Javier, Visitación Martínez, held a meeting with the CEO of Youth, Francisco Sanchez, and the Councillor of the Department, Javier Castejón to pool together new programmes, which will be offered to the municipality in the coming months.

This week 2,700 children went back or started at one of the nine schools of San Pedro del Pinatar. The school year began normally for students in nursery and primary schools in the town. The mayor was accompanied by the general director of Educational Planning and Human Resources of the Ministry of Education, Enrique Ujaldón, and the Councillor for Education, Guadalupe Garcia, who visited the school Our Lady of Mount Carmel Lo Pagan to mark the start of the school year. PP Councillor Agustina Esteve wants what’s best for Torrevieja

by Keith Nicol AGUSTINA ESTEVE, Partido Popular Councilwoman inTorrevieja, commented on the announcement on Tuesday by the government team about the development of the ITS 2020 that looks for ways and ideas that will take Torrevieja forward into the next decade. She said: “I’m glad that the current Councillor for Citizen Participation has understood how important this is to the future of our city by inviting Public Participation and to ask for suggestions from all our citizens. This is of enormous importance for Torrevieja as they are to help the completion of the Strategic Plan, the establishment of the Social Council of the city, creating the Municipal Office for Suggestions and Complaints, and the creation of districts.” Agustina has also specified that the ITS 2020 is a reflection process open to all citizens to help define future scenarios, a strategy of integrated and sustainable development in which there will be citizens to adapt projects and plans to run in our city in five years time, knowing the priorities and needs that require such citizens and social actions. This initiative is linked to the terms and requirements of the European Union to welcome Torrevieja to their grant processes and funding schemes. All the steps necessary for the start of the strategic plan were provided in the previous mandate from the Department of Citizen Participation. Thanks to this, today, Friday, September 11th the current government team has organised a conference called “Torrevieja: are you involved in your future.” Agustina Esteve said: “We must not forget that the ‘Reglamento Orgánico del Consejo Social de la Ciudad’ was finally approved with the vote for the PP dated November 29, 2013, despite the vote against the proposal by the then councilors Domingo Pérez, Fanny Serrano and Javier Manzanares of the PSOE, Domingo Soler Torregrosa of APTCe and Jose Hurtado and the current mayor Jose Manuel Dolon from the Greens, all in the current government pentapartito.” The Councillor of the Popular Party concluded by saying that “I think that voting against it owed more to political opposition misunderstanding some of the criteria that was to encourage the development and growth of our city, but I am pleased to think that they have been reflecting on their errors. Even with the PP being in opposition we will be close to the people and always support those projects and decisions that improve the quality of life of our citizens. However, we are concerned, since its inception in office to date, the total inactivity of the area of citizen participation in this and other projects.”

Spain backs EU reform BRITAIN’S PRIME Minister David Cameron has won Spain’s support in pressing for European Union reform before the UK stages a referendum on membership.

THE PREMIER met counterpart Mariano Rajoy in Madrid last Friday for talks. The Spanish leader said afterwards it was “unthinkable” there would be a British exit. Mr Cameron wants Britain to remain in a changed EU and is confident he can win reforms that would allow him to recommend a ‘yes’ vote in a membership ballot he has promised by the end of 2017. The two leaders’ talks over EU membership were overshadowed by the ongoing refugee crisis in the Mediterranean but are crucial for member states as Mr Cameron continues to lobby fellow leaders. In a joint news conference in Madrid after “very positive talks”, Mr Rajoy said in principle, his country would “do everything in its power for things to go well” in renegotiations. He said: “IT would be unthinkable and a step backwards – that I don’t even want to think about – if the United Kingdom was not in the EU.” No details were given of the reforms the UK is seeking but it was revealed the two leaders had

discussed the EU single market and competitiveness. A source said there was still “a long way to go” before reaching any consensus. And also on Mr Cameron’s agenda is pruning EU regulation, increased free trade, and guarantees that Britain’s interests in the single market would not be damaged from further Eurozone integration. Both leaders made a joint call for reform to make the EU more competitive. Central to this is a binding free trade agreement with the United States.

Four die in heavy rains

SOUTHERN COAST towns in Spain felt the full force of the storms on Monday and Tuesday as three people died. The first fatality was a 61 year old man who’s car was washed away in Polopos La Mamola on Monday. The same afternoon the body of a 50 year old man was discovered in Albunol, Granada once the flood waters had receded. The third victim, a man in his 60’s, was discovered on Tuesday morning washed up on the beach in Castell de Ferro, south of Granada. On Wednesday a fourth victim was discovered, they had been washed up at the mouth of a river on nearby beach between Castell and Calahonda. Although there had been weather alerts no one could have prepared for the 80 litres of rainfall per metre that fell in just 40 minutes in the area. Authorities reported that on Monday afternoon over 300 emergency calls were received from Malaga, Almeria and the Jaén provinces.

Operation Captura’s success THE OPERATION Captura’s most wanted list is one less today as Robert Mortby handed himself into the authorities in Gibraltar.

by Jeanette Rice MR MORTBY, aged 28, is wanted on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was attacked at the Rose and Crown pub in Rodney Road, London back in July 2012 and featured as one of the most wanted in the Operation Captura campaign run jointly between the National Crime Agency and Crimestoppers. It is believed that Mr Mortby had been staying in a nearby Spanish town but travelled to Gibraltar to hand himself in to the British authorities. He simply walked into the New Mole House Police Station, announced who he was and was immediately arrested and remanded into custody whilst extradition proceeding began to return him to the UK.

In a statement, Dave Allen, from the National Crime Agency said “following increased interest in the Operation Captura fugitives campaign of late, Mr Mortby realised his time was up and the best option was to hand himself in. The last five weeks have seen three of our most wanted fugitives arrested. I have no doubt that these successes will highlight to the remaining 15 individuals that we will not stop until they are all brought to justice”. Operation Captura identified 86 serious criminals that it believed to be in Spain, with this capture only 15 remain on the list as the pressure increases on them from the general public and law enforcement agencies to “give it up”.

Car rally kills seven A CAR rally ended in tragedy on Saturday as one of the vehicles veered out of control in Carral, north west Spain. by Jeanette Rice GUARDIA CIVIL reported that amongst the dead were two girls aged 11 and 13 with a further 15 being treated in hospital, two of whom are said to be in a critical condition. The cars taking part in the rally were driving through Carral just before 8pm where a crowd had gathered waiting to see the high speed competitors pass through. At this point one of the cars, a Peugeot 206, crashed into the spectators having lost control. Guardia Civil have reported that the driver and co driver were receiving psychological attention following the accident and that the car’s wheels had touched the edge of the road on a downhill curve and spun out of control. Of the seven dead, five have been confirmed as being local to the area. One local couple, Miguel Caridad and his girlfriend Ana Cayazzo, who was nine months pregnant, were amongst the dead. The rally car driver, Sergio Tabeayo and his co driver Luis Prego were unharmed in the accident and were questioned by the police on Sunday. José Luis Fernández Mouriño, mayor for Carral said “this was a holiday time, everything was going well and then you get called to something like this, such a terrible tragedy”. The town of Carral and also the neighbouring town where some of the victims live, Cambre, declared three days of official mourning as the rally was immediately suspended. A spokesman for Spain’s Higher Sports Council said “we deeply regret the accident at the Coruna rally and send our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the deceased”.

Spain moved by refugee crisis

AS THE media continues to show the growing crisis across Europe with hundreds of thousands of people travelling across borders, Spain has had a change of heart and increase the number of refugees that it originally offered to help. Originally Mariano Rajoy, Prime Minister, said that Spain would take 2,749 migrants and refugees but on Wednesday the government announced that they would accept an additional 14,931. The announcement comes after a groundswell of sympathy from many Spaniards and local governments who have applied pressure to the central government. Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, said on Wednesday “we are working hard to ensure that these people are guaranteed not only a positive reception, but, in the medium and long term, the integration that they deserve in our country. Ironically Ms. Sáenz de Santamaría had argued that Spain’s capacity to absorb refugees was saturated previously.

Cartagena welcomes Training ship Guayas THE TRAINING ship ‘Guayas’ arrived in Cartagena on Monday 7th September, its only Spanish destination.

by Keith Nicol ON TUESDAY September 8th the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the city welcomed the Commander of the ship, Carlos Zumarraga, accompanied by a representative of the Embassy of Ecuador, Luis Vayas Valdivieso. The Ecuadorian vessel has spent the last few days n Cartagena and leaves today, Friday, September 11th. During these five days, one could visit the ship with a guide, as well as take part in various activities, which will be attended members of the government team and the mayor or deputy mayor. Mayor Jose Lopez conveyed the gratitude for the visit and said they are delighted to receive the Ecuadorian school ship. The shop’s commander explained that the decision for the ship to visit Spain has been totally non political, but from the point of view of

Ecuador, but there is every reason to do so since Spain is a friendly country, we all speak Spanish, and it is where the ship was built, in Bilbao. Moreover, Cartagena is a safe port of call, full of people and businesses related to the sea. The training ship belonging to the Navy of Ecuador and has two main tasks: Training students at sea and to be a traveling embassy for their citizens who have moved to other countries. It consists of 46 students , six of whom are women and for ten months they sail around the world, with the next stop being Rome. The government team of the City of Cartagena participated in various activities such as the procession of the Virgin of Quinche, very important to the people of Ecuador. Throghout the week, various activities took place including concert bands and a reception.

Time for Drama in Cartagena

THE MUNICIPAL School of Theatre and Drama in Cartagena has opened the enrolment period for the course 2015-2016. Classes are divided into groups according to age, and one can register from four years or age onwards: regardless of age. The school has three groups, children, youth and adult. One of the notable developments is the formation of Aula KreamTeatro Group, aimed at young people between 18 and 25 years, with the intention of creating a company of this young theatre school, and to show the work done in different theatrical spaces. In addition, the Municipal School of Theatre is seeking collaboration with the School of Dramatic Arts in Murcia , given the large influx of young students coming out of the city of Cartagena to pursue advanced studies in Performing Arts. The mayor pointed out the more than 200 courses offered during the summer months that have been developed in the town’s public schools for their maintenance and improvement, such as bricklaying, painting, locksmith, plumbing or electricity, between other. It was also noted that in the school Our Lady of Carmen work has been carried out, with funding from the Ministry of Education, for the optimisation of thermal and acoustic insulation, which involved the renovation of all windows. Bilingualism, already established in six of the schools in the locality, and the implementation of the new Organic Law of Education Quality Improvement (LOMCE) mark the beginning of the course where around 2,700 children returned to class. The next to add to the students numbers are the middle and high school students of the Institutos Manuel Tárraga Escribano and Dos Mares, plus the Educational Centres San Pedro Apóstol and Castelar College, as well as courses for Adult Education which will begin operations on 16th September. Moreover, vocational training starts on September 23rd.

Who wants a job, a house and a rural life? AS SMALL towns struggle to cope with residents moving to the cities, Bufali, a rural village in the Valencian region has taken drastic action to save their school. Bufali school is short of two pupils so the town hall advertised that in exchange for relocation they would offer one family a house with a rent of €200 and a permanent job at a waste collection company paying €15,000 annually. The school, which currently only has four students, is set in the small village that has a population of just 150 people. As two of the four pupils are due to leave the school next year the village is being pro active and starting to address the problem now. Dozens of families from around Spain have applied to be considered and the council will be conducting personal interviews with the families before making their decision.

Benidorm ITV’S BENIDORM series picked up the TV Choice award for best comedy show on Monday night. by Jeanette Rice The London Hilton Hotel on Park Lane was packed full of celebrities on Monday evening as the TV Choice awards were presented, hosted by Lenny Henry. This year the Benidorm programme (ITV) competed against Birds of a Feather (ITV), Peter Kay’s Car Share (BBC1) and W1A (BBC2).for the best comedy show as voted for by the public. As the nominees were read out representatives of the Benidorm programme including some of the cast, the directors and the writer Derren Litten sat anxiously at their table until they heard the words “and the winner is …… Benidorm”. The programme, which was first aired in 2007 and completed filming of its latests series (8) in July of this year, has promoted the resort of Benidorm and even received an award from the mayor in June for it’s contribution towards to tourism in the town. As the writer, Derren Litten and the cast made their way to the stage to collect their award no doubt Sherrie Hewson wished she could have been there instead of being in the “Celebrity Big Brother” house. Ant and Dec picked up three awards, although they could not attend the evening and send in a video message of thanks

with Broadchurch winning the best drama series. Aidan Turner who played Poldark picked up the award for “best new drama” with his co star Eleanor Tomlinson as the award ceremony continued to represent the public opinion. In what was a poignant moment, Sheridan Smith was presented with the best actress award for her portrayal of the late singer and entertainer Cilla Black, who died just over a month ago. As she collected her award Sheridan said “obviously, it’s tinged with sadness, it is an absolute honour and privilege to play such an amazing lady, thank you Cilla”. Other winners of the evening included best soap – Eastenders, best talent show – Britain’s Got Talent and best food show – Saturday Kitchen. Let the seller beware

Many ex-pats are selling their properties at giveaway prices in a panic to get back to the UK. This has given the impression that the value of all properties on the Costa Blanca have fallen. I would advise them to research prices, before they approach an estate agent. Many paid high prices but are now selling for a low price. Dubious estate agents want you to buy high and sell low. The fall in prices are caused by some British property owners finding themselves in financial difficulties, being unable to pay their mortgages or having lost their local jobs. Some have had to return their properties to the banks or sell their property hastily at a knock-down price in order to return to the UK. This is a joy to greedy estate agents who are quick to advise sellers that their asking price is too high. The estate agent may present property adverts showing you that similar houses are much cheaper than yours. This has generated a belief that all properties are ‘going for a song’ on the Costa Blanca. Many other Europeans are taking advantage of the cheap properties on the market and some estate agents are doing very well. The Norwegians, Finnish, Russians and other Europeans coming here to buy property have the money to pay higher prices for those properties they are now buying at knock-down prices. I would advise property owners not to fall prey to the present ‘reduced price scam’. Anyone joining the bandwagon of reduced or discount properties prices are helping to make the situation worse, in which they themselves become victims. Don’t give your home away, at present only some British ex-pats in financial trouble have sold quickly.

A well known Indian food chain has three restaurants including at Los Dolses and Playa Flamenco but we paid a visit the Cabo Roig Branch recently to try their Early Bird offer. This is available from 5pm to 8;30pm costing €9.95 per person. Too good to be true? Well think again. I went for the spicy chicken wings to start. They were fiery but not incendiary followed by a medium hot lamb tikka. It was simply the best lamb ever. So tender it was like biting into marshmallow. To wash the superb food down, I chose the very drinkable house rosé. Even adding a full bottle of wine to the cost did not break the bank with an excellent choice of reds, whites and rosés, all under €10. The service is excellent and a warm welcome is given on arrival. Nothing is too much trouble for the friendly (english speaking) staff . With luck you can park right outside but there is ample parking in nearby streets although it can get very busy. We did not book in advance but such is it’s popularity, it may be advisable. Will we go back? Well,with a banquet of a meal for five with an extra bottle of wine costing a total of under €60, and enjoyed by all, I can tell you, we already have. Highly recommended! ITV’S BENIDORM series picked up the TV Choice award for best comedy show on Monday night. by Jeanette Rice The London Hilton Hotel on Park Lane was packed full of celebrities on Monday evening as the TV Choice awards were presented, hosted by Lenny Henry. This year the Benidorm programme (ITV) competed against Birds of a Feather (ITV), Peter Kay’s Car Share (BBC1) and W1A (BBC2).for the best comedy show as voted for by the public. As the nominees were read out representatives of the Benidorm programme including some of the cast, the directors and the writer Derren Litten sat anxiously at their table until they heard the words “and the winner is …… Benidorm”. The programme, which was first aired in 2007 and completed filming of its latests series (8) in July of this year, has promoted the resort of Benidorm and even received an award from the mayor in June for it’s contribution towards to tourism in the town. As the writer, Derren Litten and the cast made their way to the stage to collect their award no doubt Sherrie Hewson wished she could have been there instead of being in the “Celebrity Big Brother” house.

Ant and Dec picked up three awards, although they could not attend the evening and send in a video message of thanks with Broadchurch winning the best drama series. Aidan Turner who played Poldark picked up the award for “best new drama” with his co star Eleanor Tomlinson as the award ceremony continued to represent the public opinion. In what was a poignant moment, Sheridan Smith was presented with the best actress award for her portrayal of the late singer and entertainer Cilla Black, who died just over a month ago. As she collected her award Sheridan said “obviously, it’s tinged with sadness, it is an absolute honour and privilege to play such an amazing lady, thank you Cilla”. Other winners of the evening included best soap – Eastenders, best talent show – Britain’s Got Talent and best food show – Saturday Kitchen. As the ceremony wrapped up and everyone headed towards the after show parties Der-

by Keith Nicol A MERE 50 years after Orson Welles walked through the palatial splendour of Cardona castle to film his Shakespearian classic ‘Chimes at Midnight’, the world of the cinema returns to Cardona for an event in which three experts on Spanish cinema history and the popular new kind of tourism, ‘set-jetting’, or movie tourism if you prefer, will present the fruits of their research in the same place, which is now the Parador Nacional de Cardona, one of many historical buildings which operate as state-run hotels in Spain. Many Paradors have been used for films, such as the one at Sigüenza, where Ridley Scott shot ‘1492’, or Oropesa in the province of Toledo, where Frank Sinatra stirred up guerilla trouble during ‘Pride and Passion’, Hondarribia, where Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen were marched into exile in ‘Papillon’, or Chinchón, where John Wayne set up his big top in ‘Circus World’; but Cardona was the first, where Welles turned the 9th century castle into Windsor, and where Henry IV and his son, the future Henry V argued about kingship.

Valencia-based teacher and writer Bob Yareham was the initiator of this project, having already presented his new book at the Parador at Oropesa in the summer of 2015. He will present his latest book: ‘A Set Jetters Guide to Spain: 101 Locations’, and will review the history of some of the 700 English language films shot in Spain and discuss how Spain can harness and benefit from cinema tourism. Jaime Palau from Lleida is an expert on the locations of James Bond films, and has travelled all over the world recording the places where 007 did what he does so well, a surprisingly large number of the locations being in Spain. Jaume is now developing a number of movie tourism initiatives. Marga Araya is from Barcelona and has dedicated many years to researching the visits of Sir Laurence Olivier to Spain, and has just published a book about the great actor and his wife, the actress Vivien Leigh. The event will take place in the Parador on Saturday 17th October 2015 at 7 pm, and admission is of course free.

Brussels ghost busters CASTELLON’S NOTORIOUS ghost airport is the subject of a European Commission probe just as commercial flights are due to start touching down. by Jack Troughton THE COMMISSION is investigating multi-million payments to a Canadian company drafted in to manage the airport was legal under EU legislation and also whether the Valencia government offered an economic incentive to Ryanair – scheduled to start flights from the UK on Tuesday. Castellon became a symbol of Spain’s wasteful spending during the boom years and when the bubble burst and the country was plunged into economic crisis; the plane free airport regularly featured internationally as a folly. Built by former Castellon provincial leader Carlos Fabra – now behind bars for tax fraud – the airport was officially opened in 2011 and until last year, it lacked the necessary licences for air traffic. The project was intended to be funded by the private sector. However, Valencia had to step in with a bailout – 120 million Euros for construction work and another 50 million Euros in compensation, cost overruns, and external work. Last year Canadian group SNC-Lavalin was awarded management of Castellon-Costa de Azahar Airport; taking up the challenge of bringing planes and passengers to the

facility in return of 24.5 million Euros in payments from Valencia over nine years. CONCESSION SNC-Lavalin was also made exempt from paying for its 20-year concession until passenger numbers top 1.2 million a year. The Canadians, who have heavily invested in maintenance, do not expect to achieve traffic in those numbers until 2029. The European Commission is investigating if the payments comply with current EU legislation or constitute an illegal public subsidy. And Brussels also wants to know whether the Valencia

government, the Castellon provincial government, or public body Aerocas has worked with SNC-Lavalin to offer any kind of economic benefit to Ryanair, to date the only commercial airline to announce it will regularly use the airport. The commission will look at whether the low-cost carrier has received any financial advantage that could be seen as a “market distortion”. Brussels admits its investigation has been slowed down by the regional and municipal elections of last May – the government in Valencia changed from being a Partido Popular controlled body to a Socialist and Compromis coalition. And insiders at Valencia have admitted the investigation is ongoing as they review linked paperwork in a bid to understand the true picture.

Back to school “pencil case infringements” by Jeanette Rice AS SPANISH children head back to their schools to start a new year pupils at a school in the UK were isolated for “pencil case infringements”. Pupils at the Magna Academy in Poole, a school praised by David Cameron for raising standards, were astounded to find out that having the wrong ruler could mean that they were not allowed to attend classes following pencil case checks. Normally issues between pupils, parents and their school are over bullying, inappropriate dress and hair styles. Understandable when a school is wanting to project a certain image but it seems the Magna Academy has gone a step too far. The school, which has 708 pupils aged between 12 and 18, isolated 40 pupils for their “pencil case infringements” One parent, Miranda Crumpler, said “I was amazed when my son told me he had been put in isolation. We were told the first week that he would be punished if he did not get a 30cm pencil case and ruler by the following week”. Ms Crumpler went on to say “I wrote a note saying I would not have my son put into isolation, and that he had a 30cm ruler but it was folding - and it does not state in school policy that it couldn’t be folding!” As parents complained to the principle, Richard Tutt, said “correct equipment is vital for students with clear and specific requirements being communicated to parents”. Other parents including Hannah Sills, were outraged by the action. Hannah said “parents were in tears, one girl told her mother that she was isolated for not packing a pair of compasses, even though she didn’t have maths that day.”

Cucaracha Club Crowdfunding 101 EVERYONE INVOLVED in the making of the film The Cucaracha Club has a reason to feel a sense of pride, because beside all the doubters, the Costa Blanca’s first ever Crowdfunded film has been completed. by Keith Nicol

HOWEVER, WITH all the greatest will in the world, the dedication of the staff, actors, crew, extras, editor etc, money is still required to make a motion picture, even if everyone gives up their time for free. One young lady in particular gave it her all when it came to putting on events and trying to make funds for the filming: Julie Kay. She said: “The making of The Cucaracha Club has been a very positive experience for me, even though it was a very steep learning curve. I had never been involved in the film industry before I was asked to be on the Board of Directors of Siesta Productions in September of last year. Since then life has become very busy with filming schedules, learning to use a movie camera etc. along with a busy fundraising schedule. However, I can’t wait to begin the next one.” She added: “I started last October with a ladies night with Kevin Rutter at Reflections at San Luis. A great fun, ladies only night which was very well received and supported, as some of the photos on Facebook will verify. This was followed by a fundraiser at the Orange Bar at Entre Naranjas helped by various artists and on 1st of December, 2014, I held a tombola at Spangles Bar, Los Montesinos followed by a Christmas meal with entertainment with Woody and Raffle.” After taking a short break for Christmas and the New Year,

but with the majority of filming in the can as they entered the New Year, it became slightly more difficult to get people excited to become involved in the project. But Julie keep the Crowdfunding train going and on the 13th March she organised yet another ladies night at the Marabou Lounge, Quesada, quickly followed on St, Patrick’s Day 17th March with a night at Los Rosales on the Lemon Tree Road with Woody. Julie continued: “April began with Robert Bonovox at The Marabu Lounge; on the 9th of May I organised a stall to publicise the film at the International Day in Torrevieja including tickets for a free draw for two tickets to the premier. On the 24th of May I organised a Family Fun day at what was then Mr Smith’s at Quesada ( now the Archer’s Bar) including Stevie Spit, Edward B. Williams, Chloe Leigh and Janelle; the 29th of May I held a fundraiser at Reflections San Luis, including a meal and entertainment from Dave the Hat. At all of these events a raffle was held and free tickets issued for the draw for two tickets to the premier.” And speaking of the Premier, although The Cucarcha Club may be show in or out of competition at various festivals around the world, the plan is still to organise a Black Tie event in Torrevieja to showcase the film, of which one of the film’s stars, former Eastender star Tom Watt, has said he’d love to attend. But all these festival entries and even the premier will also cost money and

so Julie has been looking at even more ideas for fund raising. She noted: “Recently I have been organising the photographing and printing of The Cucaracha Club Calendar 2016.We are still looking for people to advertise in the Calendar if any local businesses would be interested or if any individuals would like to sponsor us. The first print will be of 1,000 calendars to be sold internationally. If you have a business or are an artist etc. and would like to advertise for a year for just 40€, please contact me for more details. Also there is a raffle at the General Store at Entre Naranjas.” But that’s not all that’s Julie has been involved with as she’s also one of the featured actors in the film and has been known to jump in wherever needed in making phone calls, taking notes, running camera, clapping the clapperboard, running people around and with the general behind the scenes work, without of which, much that has had gone on to produce the film would not have been possible. As noted, Julie continues to Crowdfund for The Cucaracha Club and once this one is finished, it will be time to start the process all over again for its following up. UK’s oldest gay bar gets listed status

THE ROYAL Vauxhall Tavern (RVT) in South East London has always been knows as an iconic lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) venue and it has now received listed status from the heritage minister. by Jeanette Rice Tracey Crouch, Heritage Minister, announced on Wednesday that the building would receive a Grade II listing and said “the iconic cultural hub in the heart of London is of huge significance to the LGBT community. The building is not only of architectural interest but the venue has a long standing historic role as a symbol of tolerance and alternative entertainment.” As Benidorm gears up for its own Pride celebrations the news was relayed to the supporters of the RVT which include Sir Ian McKellen, Paul O’Grady and Graham Norton. The building which was originally a Victorian music hall now hosts drag cabaret shows and featured in the 2014 film Pride. A spokesperson for the pub, Amy Lame, said “this is fantastic news and we will continue to ensure that the RVT remains a vibrant space for the LGBT community and culture for generations to come.”

IN SPAIN, it is usually this time of year when we pay the local IBI tax (depending on which municipality you are in). THE TAX is sent by our Town Hall, or in some municipalities by entities responsible for the local tax management (IBI, vehicles, waste, etc.), such as SUMA, etc. This tax is based on the cadastral value of the property, which depends on many factors, mainly on the description of our property on the Catastro, i.e: the nature of the property (urban, rustic, etc.), the surface of the plot, the building area, type of construction, etc. It is very common when we review our clients catastral property description for the first time, that we discover that the details on catastro do not correspond to the physical reality, and often taxpayers have been over paying local taxes for years, especially property tax,

What will an interest rate rise mean for you WITH THE Bank of England and the Federal Reserve in the US moving ever closer to an interest rate rise, what impact will this have on investments? IT LOOKS like the Federal Reserve in the US may raise its interest rate this year, followed by the Bank of England in the first half of 2016. The UK has had rock bottom rates now for 6 years , not only have interest rates been low, but they have been below inflation for the past six years so that savings have been effectively wasting away in terms of what they will buy in the future. But before you rush out and convert your investments to cash in anticipation or those of you that are currently holding cash in a Bank or Building society account get overly excited at this news, this rise will be small 0.25% to 0.50%, so in reality that will add very little to the growth potential of your savings left languishing in cash. Is a rate rise good or bad for investors? Periods of rising interest rates are often associated with volatile stock and bond markets , however in this instance we also need to recognise that rising rates in the UK and US are a sign of economic progress. The UK grew at a healthy 0.7 per cent in the second quarter of this year, the ninth consecutive quarterly gain since the economy turned at the beginning of 2013. Unemployment is returning to its pre-crisis rate and output is now some 5.5 per cent above the level when the financial crisis struck. When we look at the performance of markets during interest rate hiking cycles it is important to make this distinction between times where rates are rising

in response to stronger growth, or when the central bank is responding to an economic problem such as overheating or a currency crisis. Not surprisingly, markets do better in the former as investors look ahead to better growth; consequently investors should remain positive on markets as interest rates are gradually pushed up. So what lies ahead? Equities should continue to make progress, in the Euro zone quantative easing continues a pace for the next year or so, which over time will encourage investors into equities bringing growth. Government bond yields are likely to move modestly higher. For the most part Company balance sheets are strong which is good news for dividends. However, there will be volatility. Rising rates will expose weaknesses in the world economy so investors should be wary of riskier areas like emerging markets and low grade credits. There is also the possibility that the pound continues to rise, particularly against the rest of Europe where interest rates are not likely to rise for some time. Finleys footie day Sept 26th 2015 FINLEYS FOOTIE day is taking place again here on the Costa Blanca for the second year running on Saturday 26th September. by Patricia Thompson Although the South Yorkshire Police “The jolly boys” have been holding this event for many years for other chosen charities, they will be here to participate in their annual charity football tournament in aid of their chosen charity “ Finleys chair fund” (see www.justgiving. com/Finleyschairfund/) . The Jolly boys first met Finley two years ago when his family lived here in Spain and they were enamoured by this little boys determination and zest for life despite all the difficulties and challenges he has to face on a daily basis. Since their first meeting, they have continued to raise funds, just recently, they all took part in the London Triathlon together with Ricky Baker (Finleys dad) and Finleys 5 year old brother Charlie who did the duathlon to raise funds for his brother. At 19 weeks old Finley was diagnosed with two rare syndromes Potocki Lupski syndrome and Charcot Marie tooth disease. This means many different things for Finley but for the most part right now, his biggest hurdle is his physical needs. Because of his syndromes he is very weak in all areas of his body, predominantly on his left side. He has struggled throughout his almost four years to achieve most things we take for granted. Finley isn’t a quitter though and has never let his physical needs stand in the way of something he wants to achieve, he is extremely determined and always finds a way to do things, however unconventional they are! This does mean however, that Finley spends his time exhausted, he doesn’t walk so shuffles or knee walks his way around. But he’s desperate to keep up, he wants to get up and run with his peers and play like any typical 3 year old! Finley starts school in September and he will be needing a powered chair to help him. As he can’t walk we are hoping to raise enough money to get him a chair that can be lowered to the ground so he can climb in himself without an adult to lift him, and then he will be able to lift himself up. This will give Finley the independence and freedom he deserves. He is such a happy boy and very willing so with the addition of the right apparatus, his life will be transformed and he won’t have to spend his days feeling so exhausted and drained, it will give him the chance to keep up with his peers and most importantly it will be his safety net, and sanctuary. We will be trying to raise the money for Finley’s chair through various charity events and are more than grateful for any donations that are made. Should we exceed the target amount (or if we do not raise enough funds, or if they cannot be used for any other reason) the funds raised will go to the general funds of Tree of Hope to assist other sick children. Exciting new Art exhibition in Calpe A GREAT opening night party started an exciting new Art exhibition in Calpe Casa de Cultura on Friday 4th September. There was a really good turnout, the cava was flowing and there was a real buzz with 80 visitors enjoying the art and the party. Twelve artists from the Painting for Pleasure Art Group of Rafol d’Almunia in the Orba Valley are showing 73 paintings, silk paintings and collages. There are flamenco paintings and tigers, horses and landscapes, abstracts, flowers and seascapes.

The exhibition is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 10pm until Tuesday 29th September and almost every day one of the artists will be there, painting and ready to talk to you about their art and the group. The group hold an exhibition every year, perhaps at Denia next September. The group meets once a week just 10 minutes from the Ondara shopping centre. Growing your own fruit

RECOGNISING THE sense behind the widely promoted message ‘Eat five or more portions of fresh fruit and vegetables a day for a healthier diet’ no Spanish garden or apartment terrace should be without some fruit trees or plants. EVEN IN less than a square metre it is possible to grow alpine or ordinary strawberries in a strawberry barrel or window box and citrus, peach, apple, pear, pomegranate, avocado and fig trees on dwarf root stocks grow perfectly well in containers provided you fill the containers with a rich in nutrients and water retaining/ well draining soil mix. In a larger garden it is not difficult to fit in plant ten types of fruit that mature in different months of the year and be able to harvest one fruit crop or another on every day of the year. The thing is to select varieties of fruit that you like to eat raw or cook and which are appropriate for the microclimate of your garden. Over seventy types of fruit are described in ‘Growing healthy fruit in Spain’ with indications of their frost and drought hardiness. Further the book ‘Ling well from your garden Mediterranean style’ illustrates the specific healthy benefits of many of the fruits to help you make a wise choice. There are plenty of possibilities for all regions and locations. Favourites from our garden have been the winter tangerines and mandarins, spring to winter raspberries (yes for eight months of the year), early summer wild strawberries plums and apricots, late summer figs almonds and grapes (plus mangoes until the heavy frost of 2005), autumn cacti fruit quince and persimmons, and lemons on almost every day of the year from a perpetual flowering and fruiting Lunar

lemon tree and the winter avocadoes. Most families do not require a large orchard. Indeed, many inland expatriates with 10.000 square metre plots have discovered that it impossible to cope with the ripening fruit of several hundred trees and vines when Spaniards are feeding surplus oranges to their sheep and goats as it is less expensive to do so than pay to harvest fruit that can be only sold for very low prices. Luckily many fruit trees have multiple benefits so they easily fit into mixed gardens for they are among the best trees for spring blossom, then the colouring fruit add interest followed by the vivid autumn leaf colours of the deciduous trees and early winter colours of persimmons and pomegranates well after the leaves have fallen. Combine the above with growing your own vegetables and you can become largely self sufficient in fruit and vegetables even with only a moderate sized garden here in Spain, and it’s much easier to do so than in rain ravished Britain. When you get gluts it’s not difficult to process many excess crops for later use by freezing, bottling, making jams and chutneys, and drying them in the sun or rather easier in a heated air tray dryer. SATURDAY 12TH is the big parade day for the Benidorm Pride event which will start at the McDonald’s restaurant in the Rincon de Loix area at 5pm. 15 floats will make their way through the Levante area to their final destination of the Auditorium Julio Iglesias.

Talented Moraira-based musician Kirsty Glen takes centre stage, firstly with the outstanding cellist Paul Kears as duo Cadenza, then with superb soprano and flautist Clair HarknessPost as Dolce Divas. Kirsty studied music at Napier University, Edinburgh, and has performed at many of the most prestigious venues in Scotland, throughout the UK, as well as in Cyprus and the Middle East. Since moving to Spain she has developed an enviable reputation for her versatile and empathic musicianship across a range of genres. Paul was principal cellist for both Symphony and Chamber orchestras at the London College of Music.

His wonderful tone, accuracy and sensitivity to the demands of the music has ensured that he has been much in demand for solo and chamber work, recording sessions and playing for West End Shows. And Claire needs no introduction to those who have heard her before. Her pure soprano voice and lyrical presentation are the end result of a successful career throughout Europe, which has seen her perform as a soloist in Berlin, Moscow and Madrid. HELGA IS old and infirm. She lives in a palatial farmhouse in the wilds of Western Norway with a distant view of the sea from her net curtained windows. When she smiles a lifetime of love and energy comes from her, but you just know that she hasn’t always had an easy life. A step away from her museum-like sitting room is an enormous red roofed cowshed and some fifty cows. Back in the house every shelf contains treasures across time as ornaments pictures and gifts line up to be counted. The walls are adorned with black and white framed pictures and there are colour snaps slid into every frame. Evidence of some nimble crochet work adorns the doilies and the antimacassars and the grand table seems to be always laid for a sumptous tea. Helga heard that I was a healer and I heard that she needed healing, and that is how we met. But we really almost never did. Helga had consulted with her local priest and had asked him if it was good to have healing from this man she knew as Kenny. I expected the worst, imagining that a polite refusal would keep Hilda and I apart, since the priest would say that I was going against the wishes of God. To my surprise he simply asked Helga if I believed in God, and sharp as a button Helga remembered that I had said “God bless” when we spoke on the phone. Her affirmative reply meant that I was welcome into the house and that God and the Church of Norway were on my side. It is good to have permission especially as the priest concerned gave his support, though, sadly, he declined the invitation to join in the proceedings. Helga had prepared a banquet of smorgasbord sandwiches for me. She had baked two cakes. There was enough coffee to rival any downtown Starbucks barista, a pitcher full of fresh cow’s milk and a chair was placed in front of hers so that I could facilitate the healing . So keen was Helga that it was first things first and though my eyes danced attendance on the beauty of her creative afternoon tea it was for afterwards, because we had work to do. My healing hands rested on Helga’s shoulder and she felt the heat almost immediately. When you are older nobody touches you anymore and Helga was delighted that I had made contact with her ready for the healing. I cannot tell you everything that came through to me during the healing. There was a lifetime of love locked inside this devout woman and her pain; and it was my sincere intention to take that pain away. The rain was pouring down and faint thunder was rumbling in the distance but a shaft of sunlight came straight through the window and illuminated Helga’s face. Just like that test we all did as children holding up a buttercup to a chin to see if someone liked butter, a golden glow lit up Helga’s smile. We connected for almost a half an hour, and as I took my hands away from Helga a big sigh came from within. I had a strange and disconnected feeling, and was aware of a presence of somebody with me. Helga saw it too, and was transfixed to her chair as a tear ran down her pale cheek and onto her crocheted shawl At the age of 27, Helga’s youngest son, Knut, was killed in a freak accident; he was struck by lightening whilst ploughing on the farm and died. Knut had returned through me and it was him, not me, that healed Helga that day, through my hands. As we both devoured our delicious tea I explained that Knut had survived in the Spirit World and that his love had allowed him to return to be with his needy Mother. I explained that this was a one off situation, and that he would be happy now to move on to where he needed to be, he was obviously waiting for the opportunity to help his dear Mother, because she needed it and he wanted it, I facilitated it. Helga has rallied and has stopped having to take some of her medication. Her Doctor wanted to know why she was so much stronger and more positive. Helga knew when to stay silent, as he was a local gossip, and told him that she had had a visit from her son, and had met a new friend, Kenny. After all, she told me, he would never ever understand, and she didn’t need to share her newly rude health with anyone except her family. I told Helga that I would share her story one day with whoever wanted to read it... and God bless you, now I have!

Choir backs church

THE POPULAR Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir launches a busy new season with a Teulada concert on Saturday 10th October to support the Church of England’s work on the coast. by Jack Troughton In a show called ‘Just Us’, the choir will sing its traditional repertoire under the direction of Claire Post-Harkness together with soloists and songs by its own acapella group. Time to dance

IT’S TIME to slip those dancing shoes back onto those twinkle toes and get ready for the new dance year in Torrevieja. The Municipal School of Dance is just finishing up preparing the new course that will begin in a few days. The classes take place in the studios at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre and will start on September 15th. However, the school just announced that the deadline for registration will remain open until the first days of October, in order to accommodate all the demand and allow time also to the many Torrevejenses families who have been taking the opportunity to enjoy their holidays. In addition to formal education, the classes, which are taught by the teachers, Nuria Girona, Lola Morales, Carmen Olmedo and Concha Die, will face a few new challenges as their dances prepare for the city’s regular festivals to show off the talents of local students, as well as taking part in a number of recreational events where their presence is always expected, following the ingrained tradition that dance has in Torrevieja.

Classes are taught at many different levels and application forms can be sought at the Virgen del Carmen or visiting the Town Hall. Students are of various ages from children through to adults. Classes in Ballet Espanol are taught at beginners and intermediate level, as over the past decade the demand and facilities has not produced a need for the city to expand their teaching levels to the higher conservatory level. Those dancers obtaining advanced levels then study in Murcia, Alicante, Valencia, Barcelona or Madrid, for the most part. During the year a number of speciality dance are also taught through the municipal school system, or the Department of Sports, on a more recreational level. These classes include Zumba, Yoga, Body Combat, Tango and various other styles, with even further classes taught at the CMO for those over 50, on a regular basis. Missing makeup My friends come round to my house regularly. We all bring our make-up with us and do makeovers on each other. Recently my friend’s cousin has come along. I noticed that some of my things have gone missing, lip colours and eye pencils. It happened again the next time, and I don’t know what to do. I’d feel bad about accusing anyone. I don’t want to upset my friend, but I have a good idea who it is. If you want to handle it yourself, the next time the group comes around, you could ask everyone to check that they haven’t accidentally taken home some of your stuff. That will alert the girl to the fact that you know things are going missing. If the situation doesn’t improve, you could try having a quiet word with her yourself - don’t accuse, just say you are wondering if she has accidentally taken your make-up by mistake. If nothing changes, you might need to get your Mum involved.

I’m so hurt

I left my 15 year marriage recently. My husband had an affair something I could not tolerate. He has told his family that it was I who had the affair, and caused the break up. This is completely untrue. I had a good relationship with his parents - better than with my own Mum and Dad, and I am devastated that my husband has lied and blamed me for the split. Now they won‘t see me, and I am so hurt. Although unfair, it is often the case that family are forced to take sides when there is a divorce. However, I understand your need to be vindicated. You had a close relationship with these people, and it is unfair for you to be blamed. Have you thought about writing them a letter? Try not to be angry when you write, but point out the facts, that the break-up was not your fault. Once you have got your side of things across, don’t expect for your once close relationship with your in-laws, to revert back to the way it was. Cuba

CUBA IS nestled between the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas and is the largest Caribbean Island. HUGELY POPULAR in the early 1950’s as a holiday destination, the tourism industry declined sharply following the Cuban Revolution. However as diplomatic relations between Cuba and the US continue to improve, it is likely to recover its status as a top destination for the US and International market. The cities of this Caribbean Paradise are varied in what they offer; Havana being a cosmopolitan capital with a thriving night life, Baracoa, which was the first Capital of Cuba and is now a quaint beach-side town. Trinidad has achieved World Heritage status, with its colonialera architecture and of course, Varadero, the beach area close to Havana, one of the most popular beach resorts of the Island. There are many attractions and activities to take part it – explore the old city of Havana, with some of the best preserved colonial buildings dotted thoughout the narrow streets and plazas of the city, or a visit to a tobacco plantation with a guided tour to the industry. Stroll along the Malecón, Havana´s 5 mile long port wall walkway where the city´s inhabitants meet to walk, chat, sell their wares and much more. Of course Cuba and Habana are synonomous with the Classic American Cars which you can hire to explore all of the country.

On foot you can hike into the mountains and visit some of the base camps used by Fidel Castro during the Revolution. Continuing in the Military theme, you can also visit the Museo Presidio Modelo, where Castro and his commandants were incarcerated. Don’t forget to keep some energy for the famous nightlife of Cuba, embodied in sultry Salsa bars where the dancing never stops! When you have had your fill of the city and its sights, take a few days vacation to the Varadero area, miles of stunning white beaches, fabulous 4* and 5* all inclusive resorts where you can truly relax. Diving, snorkelling, swimming with dolphins, boat & catamaran trips – all that you would expect from this Caribbean paradise. The language of the island is Spanish, given its long history with Spain, and the currency is the Cuban Peso, or Cuban Convertible Peso. Both are equally usable, however it is likely that as a tourist, you will only ever use the Cuban Convertible Peso. Cuban currency cannot be pre-ordered, the best way to obtain it at the best exchange rate, is in an official bank in Cuba. The rate is approximately 1 CUC (Cuban Convertible Peso) to $1. In it’s infancy, cruises are available to Cuba from Spain this December, and the return in April 2016. There are also a number of options of flights, hotels & cruises whilst you are in Cuba.

Tony Sheridan’s and the Beat Brothers singed a contract in 1961, to record ´My Bonnie´ in Hamburg, Germany. They were paid around 18 pounds each, and now the contract is to be sold at auction with estimates of 500,000 pounds being bandied about. The six-page document, signed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and then-drummer Pete Best, is being sold by the estate of Uwe Blaschke, a German graphic designer and noted Beatles historian who died in 2010. A Bonnie wee sum indeed! A Spongebob Squarepants stage show is underway with David Bowie, Steve Tyler and Cyndi Lauper amongst others writing songs for the production. “The stage show will be a lot different to the TV show and the 2 movies” said director Tina Landau before adding “We’re taking our leads from the TV show but this is an original story, and we´ll present the world of Bikini Bottom and its characters in a whole new way that can only be achieved in the live medium of theatre.” Umm.

In terms of notoriety in the business of popular movie making Steven Spielberg is possibly the most renowned film director in behind Alfred Hitchcock. The late ´Hitch´ began making movies way back in the 1920´s, started to shine in the 30´s and of course reached brilliance with ´Psycho´ and ´The Birds´ in the 60´s. Spielberg’s career began in the 70´s with ´Jaws´ establishing him in ´75, followed by ´Raiders of the Lost Ark´ and ´ET´ in the 80´s, his list of directorial credits is quite remarkable. Raiders of the Lost Ark of course featured Indiana Jones, a character that went on the star in three more films, the last one being in 2008, and Spielberg is often credited with being the director who began the superhero era. He was interviewed by Yahoo News US last week and had a lot to say about the crop of superhero films that are currently saturating the business “Superhero movies are a fad with a limited shelf life. We were around when the western died and there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the western, these cycles have a finite time in popular culture, there will come a day when the mythological stories are supplanted by some other genre that possibly some young filmmaker is just thinking about discovering for all of us.” On a purely personal level I hope that day comes real soon. Other directors have been a lot more vitriol in their comments, like Oliver Stone, who last year said “the superhero genre has infected the American culture; you young people believe all of this s**t! Batman and Superman, you’ve lost your minds, and you don‘t even know it!” Love you Oliver!

US comedian Jerry Seinfeld has 2 sons, and last week they were arrested for selling lemonade, illegally! Gods Honest! They set up a stall to raise money for charity in the sassy Hampton area of New York where they live but the police shut them down. Jerry´s wife Jessica got the last laugh posting a pic on Instagram of the lawbreakers with their hands above their heads with the caption “Lemonade dreams crushed by local neighbour!”

I recall my time working on local radio earning not too badly I´m happy to say. I now take you to the other end of the scale and a guy called Howard Stern, a 61 year old man who recently signed a deal with Sirius Satellite Radio for $500 million a year and an additional $250 million in bonuses. WHY?? Because he´s totally fearless when it comes to asking ´in your face´ questions to famous celebs, and the world loves him for it!

Eddie Redmayne won Best Actor Academy Award for his brilliant portrayal of Stephen Hawking in ´The Theory of Everything´ and might well do it again with his new movie ´The Danish Girl.´ It tells the story of transgender pioneer Lili Elbe who was born in Vejle, Denmark in 1882. This emotionally charged subject matter suggests Redmayne is a very courageous actor indeed. Release date; January 1st. Trailer; The Danish Girl: Global Trailer. The following happened in Belfast in Ireland, and is likely to have already entered folklore up there. Location: The Culloden Hotel. Occasion: A wedding party for Tom and Sarah Lenihan. Suddenly someone spotted bearded Robert Pattison having a pint at the bar and instantly it was all about iPhones and selfies. The incident made ´Belfast Live´ with wedding guest Jamie Reid saying “Robert Pattinson was lovely, he could have said no but he didn’t.”

A KlassiX story PREPARE YOURSELVES - there is a new and exciting 5 piece band about to take the South Costa Blanca by storm. by Patricia Thompson WE REFER to KlassiX. This musical project consists of: Steve Douglass, lead guitar / vocals, Daz Holford, rhythm guitar / vocals, Tony Orton, bass guitar, George Thomson, saxophone and Ray Prentice, drums / backing vocals. Steve, started playing guitar at 12 years of age. By 18 he had worked in bands around his home city of Leeds. His big break came when he joined “Focus Harmony” - then he was gigging 7 nights a week, supporting many of the top groups at the time. He gave up guitar, when a triple heart by pass “got in the way”. 50 years after he started his musical career, he was dragged out of retirement, to set up, and direct KlassiX. Daz had a few guitar lessons in his early 20s and was enjoying it, until his girlfriend convinced him

to sell his guitar and amplifier, in order to buy furnishings for their new home. Needless to say, the girlfriend didn’t last as long as his guitar would have - if he had been allowed to keep it! When Daz moved to Spain - he met Steve, and they started jamming together. Shortly after, Tony Orton linked up with Steve and Daz to join them on bass guitar. Tony had been playing both acoustic and electric guitars since he was 12 years of age. It was 2 years ago that he bought his first bass. George Thomson began playing saxophone at 29 years of age. He decided back then, that he was getting too old to compete in his favourite hobby - martial arts. It was 18 months ago that he was approached by Steve, to join the band. George is “self taught” on the saxophone. Last, but not least, drummer Ray

Prentice was asked to complete the musical line up, just a few months ago. Ray was just a teenager when he developed an interest in percussion, tapping away on cardboard boxes and utilising biscuit tin lids as cymbals, and his mother’s knitting needles as drumsticks.... It wasn’t long before he was on his way to getting his

first drum kit! Ray soon teamed up with young fellow aspiring musicians and over the years he has worked in many top class groups around London, and has a vast experience of working with showbiz agencies. KlassiX have a vast repertoire covering most genres of music and play hits from: The Stereophonics, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd,

Gerry Rafferty, Neil Young, The Eagles, Bruno Mars, Goyte, T Rex, The Rolling Stones and Status Quo - just to name a few. Accessing my spam

Hello Aunty. I STILL work with a Dell desktop pc and Windows XP, which really suits me fine. I had no problems with it until about 10 days ago when I found out that a friend’s mail had gone into spam. No problem, as I normally go about once a month into my gmail account through the internet to check things out. I have to do this because I cannot find a way to access spam mail through outlook express. However, through the internet, I can “access” my account, but cannot read it. Google comes up with a whole list of questions re. security, personal info, etc. and I am really cheesed off. I cannot find any way to say “later” or “go away” or whatever and get through to my mail. Can you please tell me how to access either spam through my outlook express or how to defeat Google so I can read my mail through the internet connection. Many thanks, Marijke (ps. As for all the questions Gmail is asking you, that makes you “cheesed off”, it is for your own security, to help ensure your account is not hacked, and to help you get your account back if you have been hacked. This is required more these days as people use different devices to access their emails, and they can see if one of these devices look suspicious and they can notify you that there has been an attempt to access your account elsewhere. Providing security questions means that there is less chance of someone being able to change account settings, as they would need to know these details to do so. So telling it to “go away” is a bad idea, as, at the end of the day, it is for your own security. Reply: MANY thanks for your very prompt reply, which is very much appreciated. Copy the files you want to back up (usually in “my Documents” folder) and then paste onto your back up drive. Or you can use some form of backup software that will back up files for you - most versions of Windows have a form of document back up built in, but can sometimes fail to back up documents that you have located on other drives or other folders.

Introduction to reflexive verbs

I have just realized, to my amazement, that I have managed to get to lesson 87 without making any reference to reflexive verbs! This is a most uncharacteristic omission and will be rectified immediately. As usual it will take more than one article to do the job properly, so here we go. Reflexive verbs are extremely common in Spanish and you will have no doubt heard them and even used them in everyday phrases without even realizing it. However, I find that the best way to explain them is use examples in English first and build up the basic idea step by step. Reflexive verbs exist in English as well, but they are far more limited in use. First of all let’s think of a simple sentence using a nice easy verb like “wash”. We can say: “I wash the car”, “I wash the child” “I wash the dog.” In each of these sentences “I” is the subject (the one who controls the action of the verb), “wash” is the verb itself and “the car”, “the child”, “the dog” are the object, in other words the person or thing that receives the action of the verb. Now as well as washing something else, just once in a while I wash myself. This sentence “I wash myself” breaks down like this: “I” is the subject, “wash” is the verb and “myself” is the object. But, here we can see that “I” and “myself” are actually the same person. In other words, the subject and the object of the verb are the same. We could also say that the “object” is a reflection of the “subject”, and in fact this explains the name of what we are talking about, because the word “myself” is called a “reflexive pronoun”.

In English we have the following reflexive pronouns: “myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, oneself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves”. They can all be used in the kind of sentence we have just seen, for example: “I wash myself” “you dress yourself” “she looks at herself in the mirror”. In every example the object and the subject are the same person, and this is how the reflexive form works in English. As you can already see, in English the use is very limited, because we usually express even these ideas rather differently. Instead of “I wash myself” I would normally say: “I have a wash”. Instead of “you dress yourself”, I would normally say “You get dressed”. In Spanish however, this reflexive form is used all the time. I wash myself (or I have a wash) in Spanish is “Yo me lavo”. “Yo” is the subject, “lavo” is the verb, and “me” is the object and the reflexive pronoun (myself). There are two quick things to say about this now. Firstly, notice that in Spanish the reflexive pronoun goes in front of the verb. In other words we are saying “I myself wash”. Secondly, as we already know, the subject pronoun (yo) in Spanish is often omitted, so we would usually just say “me lavo”. A common confusion is to think that “me” somehow replaces “yo” and means “I”, but it doesn’t. “Me lavo” means therefore “I wash myself”, or in real English “I have a wash”. I’ll leave you to meditate on that one and will carry on next week. See you then!

Gestational Diabetes: Part 2

In our last article we looked at signs, symptoms and diagnosis of gestational diabetes. Here we will look at management: Management For many women gestational diabetes can be controlled with diet and exercise. Patients should be referred to a dietician who specialises in nutrition in pregnancy and will explain a special diet to the patient. Physical activity lowers the blood glucose level, so regular exercise can be an effective way to treat gestational diabetes. A Midwife or G.P. will give advice on the safest form of exercise during pregnancy. Monitoring Blood Glucose Your midwife or G.P. will tell you how to test your blood glucose level and explain what level you should be aiming for. This may include a target for: fasting blood glucose (usually taken in the morning after fasting for 8hrs) postprandial blood glucose (one or two hours after eating) blood glucose at other times (for instance, if you feel unwell or have been having episodes of hypoglycaemia – low blood glucose) You will be advised when and how often you need to test your blood glucose. You may need to test your fasting blood glucose and your blood glucose after every meal throughout your pregnancy. Medication If diet and exercise have not effectively controlled your gestational diabetes after one to two weeks, you may be prescribed medication. Depending on your glucose levels this

may be in tablet form (Metformin) or injections (Insulin).

Pregnancy and Birth Management Once gestational diabetes is diagnosed, your Midwife and doctor will see you regularly to monitor your progress. As long as your blood sugars are within normal limits, ultra sound scans show normal growth and development and there are no other problems with your pregnancy you may be able to await spontaneous labour. However, if there are concerns your labour may be induced, usually after 38 weeks. You may be able to progress to a vaginal delivery but if your baby is large Caesarean Section may be recommended. Whatever the mode of delivery, all patients with gestational diabetes should be delivered in a Consultant Obstetric Unit where the woman can be monitored very closely throughout labour and there is Consultant Peadiatric care for the baby. Post Natal Management ‘A close eye’ will be kept on both the mother’s and baby’s blood glucose after delivery. Any medication you were on to control your blood glucose will usually be stopped immediately. Your blood glucose level will be tested about 612 weeks after delivery, to make sure it has returned to normal. Depending on your glucose levels at diagnosis, you will either have a repeat oral glucose tolerance test (GTT) or your GP will arrange a HbA1c test (a marker of your average blood sugar over the preceding 3 months) at 12 weeks. An HbA1c will then be measured at least once a year to check whether or not you have developed type 2 diabetes as this is more common in those who have had gestational diabetes. Complications of gestational diabetes The good news is that most women with gestational

diabetes go on to have normal pregnancies with healthy babies. The risk of complications is reduced if gestational diabetes is diagnosed and managed properly throughout your pregnancy. However, if gestational diabetes is not managed properly, or goes undetected, it could cause a range of serious complications for both you and your baby, including: your baby being large (4kg or more). This increases the need to induce labour and may lead to birth problems such as shoulder dystocia (obstructed labour) or a caesarean delivery your baby having health problems immediately after birth such as a low blood sugar premature birth miscarriage stillbirth Future pregnancies After having gestational diabetes, you are at increased risk of having gestational diabetes in any future pregnancies. It’s very important to speak to your Midwife or GP if you are planning another pregnancy. They may arrange for you to monitor your own blood glucose from the early stages.

Costa Cobras RFC continue training on the beach DUE TO the fiestas in Daya Vieja training there has been postponed until after they have finished in the middle of the month. In the meantime the Cobras will continue to train on the beach regardless of the weather. The club will be training on Guardamar beach on Monday and Wednesday at 8.00pm. Over the summer the team has attracted a number of new junior players join in the training and become members of the club from U10’s to U16’s; a good result for the club, so anybody who wants to come along and take part is more than welcome. The club now has its CIF number and is part of the Valencian Rugby Federation, so they can continue to move forward and develop as a club and are starting to look for sponsors for playing gear etc for the club. By Tony Myles DESPITE THE protestations of those who don’t want to face the truth, there is very clear evidence that the sport of Golf is slowly losing participants. Over the last ten years there has been a steady decline in the number of youngsters entering the game. For the iPhone and PlayStation generation, golf can appear slow and less dynamic than their favourite modern video device. There is a real risk that as the older generation retire from the game, the diminishing supply of youngsters will be insufficient to sustain the sport at its current level and shortly thereafter it could become a fringe activity played on a few exclusive courses. For this reason it is gratifying to see a new project based on a regular golf format and exclusively for young players. IT IS CAMPBELL LAMONT’S JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUES Credit must go to two senior golf

executives in the Valencian region. Javier Camuñas from Manises Golf Club and Manuel Dutor from Foressos Golf Club recognised the problem and have taken some positive steps to address it. With the support of Campbell Lamont they have created a Junior Golf League for the younger players giving them the chance to compete and improve during the year. Every Federated Junior player is welcome to play and at a very competitive price of 10€ if they belong to any of the clubs taking part in the competition or 25€ if they are a visitor to the venue. This concept has already become a reality and this year Junior competitions are being played in La Sella Golf, Foressos, Manises, Costa Azahar and Masia de las Estrellas. THERE IS a common thread in literature, art and design. That is that ideas are borrowed and then reinvented, sculpted into a new and unique offering.

ARTISTS ARE a good example of this. Take Robert E. Wells and David Farren, for instance. They both paint landscapes, cityscapes and street scenes in a similar impressionistic style. Their work draws inspiration from the great French painters like Monet and Renoir, who introduced this approach in the 19th Century. Clearly, the actress Felicity Kendal appreciates this style because pictures by both Wells and Farren can be found in her private collection. So it goes to show that just because that genre already existed it is perfectly acceptable to revisit and craft it into something equally, if not, more appealing. This approach is popular in car design, too. Look at the side of the new Kia Picanto, city car. What do you see? It’s an Alfa Romeo, surely. The whole design

reminds me of the Alfa 147. Chrome door handles favoured by the Italian manufacturer further add to this opinion. As with my thoughts about art, this is no bad thing. The Alfa 147 was an attractive little car but it was a temperamental Italian. It was calling out to be rediscovered and enhanced. This observation goes to show how far Kia has come in the space of a decade. Consider that this Korean car maker produced the bland and characterless Kia Pride between 1986 and 2000 with hardly a change in its styling (if you can call it that) during that long period and it is surprising and welcoming to see the change that has taken place. The tiny Picanto is up against tough competition from the Smart Car and the Renault Twingo. In this sector though, it’s all about the money and Kia blows the competition away with its OTR price, which includes air conditioning, electrically operated windows and wing mirrors as you can see in the

video at testdrives.biz. The piece de resistance is a seven year 100,000 mile warranty: you only get four years with a more expensive Renault. An attractive vehicle, the Picanto is sure to melt even the coldest heart. Distinctive alloy wheels, again reminiscent of designs favoured by Alfa Romeo, set it off, adding to the sense that there is something a little different about this car. Alfas have always liked their juice and so Kia drivers will be pleased to know that not only can they enjoy its attractive looks but the Picanto returns around 50mpg. Its five speed manual gearbox is pleasant enough and the one litre engine doesn’t complain when driven hard, which is necessary if a decent pace is required.
