EXPAT PENSIONERS are being invited to bombard British MPs with complaints their winter fuel payments are being controversially axed this month. Spain is one of seven countries being denied the universal benefit after the Government introduced a temperature test – and was promptly accused of massaging figures. And the decision to end the payment was implemented via statutory instrument in the House of Commons; preventing any democratic debate before Parliament. A 20-page submission was submitted by the organisers of a Europe-wide campaign designed to protect pensioners living abroad and insist on democratic voting rights for all expats. However, when the detailed document, which highlighted the real winter temperatures for areas of Spain and France, was sent to the Select Committee on Work and Pensions it was sidelined. It was said to be outside the remit of the select committee which is investigating how the Department for Works and Pensions ‘delivers’ benefits and universal credit

correctly and promptly and any impact of delays and errors. POLICY The committee was said to be looking at the ‘administration’ of benefits while the government has ruled that the winter fuel allowance issue is a “policy” matter. Campaigners are now urging pensioners to write to their MP – or their last representative – outlining their anger at being denied the benefit because the information will be received by the committee chairman – MP Frank Field – when passed on from colleagues. Pensioners, many struggling to make ends meet, feel particularly aggrieved because they have contributed to the system all their working lives and say they are being discriminated against – a stance the EU is likely to support. Prime Minister David Cameron has pledged to protect the elderly and not introduce means testing for winter fuel payments, free bus passes and free television licences.

Local police arrest two robbers in Rojales

LOCAL POLICE in Rojales were involved in a car pursuit of two suspected robbers that had been operating in the region. The local police officers had received information of a duo operating in the area and were able to match the description to a couple they found just attempting to commit a robbery at a local industrial estate. Following a short chase the officers intercepted the vehicle and arrested the driver and its passenger. The evidence points to the couple having committed several other robberies in the area following witness statements taken from the previous crimes. The man and the woman aged 30 and 35 years old are of Spanish nationality and were formally charged at the Guardia Civil offices in Almoradi before being remanded in custody.

Strike misery continues PASSENGERS ARE advised to contact their carriers as further strike dates are announced with airport workers in the country.

THE SPANISH air traffic controllers have announced two new dates which are September 26th and October 3rd, the continuing protests result from 61 Barcelona based controllers who received fines during a similar protest in 2010 which it is said left 200,000 passengers stranded. The UCSA union (The National Assembly of the Trade Union of Air Traffic Controllers) said that “the stoppages will occur between 4am and 6pm on both days”. They issued a statement saying that they were still open to talks with Enaire, the public corporation that manages the air navigation in Spain but, that, given the unwillingness of Enaire to open negotiations on revoking the sanctions that were imposed on their 61 members and the reinstatement of one controller, who was sacked, they have no alternative but to protest. The previous few weeks have seen airport workers hold a “work to rule” protest, which it could be argued did not cause as many delays as was expected but airlines such as Easyjet, Vueling and Ryanair are bracing themselves for significant disruption if the strikes are not call off.

Pigeon droppings causing collapsed roofs

FOLLOWING MANY complaints from residents about their buildings in San Anton, Elche fire fighters and local police supervised an inspection using cranes fixed on fire trucks. Four buildings were inspected where residents had reported that roofs were collapsing, which they felt, was due to the high amount of pigeon droppings that had accumulated over the years. The inspections that took place on Wednesday found that there were bird remains and nest, combined with an indescribable amount of pigeon droppings but that there had also be a lack of maintenance to clear these on a regular basis. All this has contributed to the buildings structure being affected as neighbours also called for action because the bird population needs to be controlled. One resident said “it is a health and hygiene issue as well as three apartments suffering from collapsed roofs with bird remains and droppings appearing in the rubble.

Rescues at sea IT WAS a busy week for the Guardia Civil as they rescued fifty immigrants in two separate incidents.

by Jeanette Rice THE FIRST incident occurred when Guardia Civil officers were patrolling in their boat and spotted an inflatable seven miles south of the Alboran Island, Almeria and within Spanish waters. The inflatable boat which measured only 7 metres contained 44 African immigrants, 30 men, 11 women and 3 babies who were battling against the sea swell. The officers succeeded in rescuing all of the occupants and promptly arrested the skipper at the scene. All of the migrants were given food and water and when they reached land were provided with medical assistance before being handed over the National Police of Almeria together with the skipper. The boat was taken to the Provincial Mari-

time Service of Almeria. The second incident occurred when officers in Melilla saw a small boat at sea with no lights. The Guardia Civil followed protocol and notified the security forces in Morocco who authorised a vessel to go and rescue the boat and its passengers. The small boat, two metres in length was carrying six adults, five men and one woman. They had not lights, engine or even oars and were sinking rapidly so the officers had to act immediately. The boat was taken into port where the passengers were treated for hypothermia and were extremely weak, requiring medical treatment at a local hospital.

ATM fees may go down

SEVERAL SMALLER Spanish banks are set to pool their resources so that they can offer their customers cheaper ATM withdrawals, unlike the bigger banks who have brought in new fees. Amongst the banks forming a cooperative are Sabadell, Bankia and EURO 6000. The participating banks will allow their customers to withdraw money at a lower rate, this amounts to 37 percent of all cash machines (over 17,730 ATM’S). With banks such as Caixa charging a flat fee of 2 euros per withdrawal for those who do not bank with them some card users are being charged twice as their own bank also makes a charge for ATM use. With BBVA and Santander also due to introduced the 2 euro flat fee for other bank’s customers using their ATM’S it is worth shopping around when looking for a new account.

No calm waters for Gibraltar YET ANOTHER incident has been reported between the Spanish authorities and Gibraltar with accusations flying about a pleasure boat being rammed by the Guardia Civil within British Gibraltar territorial waters.

by Jeanette Rice IT WOULD appear that the Guardia Civil vessel repeatedly manoeuvred recklessly endangering the lives of those on board the pleasure boat. During the National Day rally in Gibraltar there were defiant calls for British Navy ships to be permanently stationed in the troublesome waters. The event which is celebrated every year on September 10th saw a group of ten British

politicians give defiant speeches regarding Spain’s attempts to take back the rock. Conservative MP for Romford, Andrew Rosindell, said “the people of Gibraltar are a part of the Great British family and I would like to see a battleship here to apprehend any Spanish ship that illegally enters British waters.” The incident has been reported to the EU commission monitoring the ongoing situation.

Gas bottle prices fall again

THE PRICE of gas bottles was reduced again on Tuesday with a maximum cost of butane being set at 12.76€. Over 8 million Spanish homes use gas bottles so the latest 5% reduction will be welcomed by those struggling with other increasing prices. This reduction means that over the year the bottles have decreased by a whopping 27%. The raw material prices have fallen so much that a further reduction is more than likely at the next price review on 17th November.

Ten tons of cannabis almost sinks boat

A YACHT was so laden down with it’s illegal cargo that it was on the verge of sinking when Spanish customs officers intercepted it. The yacht was 27 miles south west of Almeria, when it was discovered by the customs officers, struggling to stay afloat. As the officers boarded the vessel they found that the entire living area was jam packed with packages, which turned out to contain cannabis. The boat, which was flying under the Dutch flag had three crew members, two men and one woman, who were promptly arrested and charged with smuggling and endangering public health. A ministry spokesperson said “the drugs took up all the available space on the yacht, the hull was packed full with the packages and you could not see the cabin beds or floor.” When safely in the harbour the full extent of the haul became apparent as the officers stacked the packages alongside the yacht to show what a huge find this had been. Spain is renowned for being one of the main routes for Moroccan hashish and cocaine to be smuggled in through, with 17.3 tons of hashish resin being seized in July on another boat near Malaga.

Bogus builder arrested GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested a Spanish man from Los Alcázares who has conned residents out of over 11,000 Euros, pretending he was a builder.

by Jeanette Rice THE MAN was arrested following several complaints to the Guardia Civil from residents of the Mar Menor area, who had taken up the services of the “builder” for repairs and reforms on their properties. In scenes similar to “cowboy builders” which features on UK television, the man leafleted the areas of San Javier and El Algar offering to carry out all renovation works and home repairs such as electrics, masonry, painting, decoration, interior design, plumbing and carpentry. The leaflets were printed in both Spanish and English, presumably to encourage as many nationalities to seek his services for the lower than average prices. The leaflet campaign, which offered the low prices for the listed services, resulted in many taking up the services of the Spanish man, paying upfront in most cases for his work, or at least paying for materials prior to any work starting. This is when the problems started for the customers as complaints flooded in to the authorities of the man being evasive about

when he would start the planned works and alarm bells began to ring that maybe they had been scammed. Police carried out an investigation to confirm that the man had indeed deceived and defrauded the growing list of people who had formally complained prior to tracking him down and arresting him. The man’s sales technique was to gain the trust of the customer and request an advance for materials which the Guardia Civil say has amounted to over 11,000 euros in the last two months alone. It is not known exactly how many were conned by the man, who has been charged with twelve cases of fraud and deception as reported by the Guardia Civil. Officers anticipate that more will come forward when they realise that this man may be someone that they have engaged the services of. Appearing before the court of San Javier the man was formerly charged and taken into custody.

He said: “Winter fuel payments exist to help Britain’s pensioners keep themselves warm. “It’s absurd and offensive that taxpayers are funding these payments for people who have retired to the Mediterranean and enjoy warmer weather.” Campaigner Margaret Hales MBE and her husband Dr Gerald Hales JP, who live on the Costa Blanca, are encouraging people to write to their MPs to lobby Mr Field and the select committee. “This whole process has been one of obstacles and devices which prevent genuine concerns about the winter fuel payment being aired in Parliament,” said Margaret. “Firstly we had the statutory instrument so that even MPs who had received letters of concern and distress from us found it could

not be debated. So the change – and the discrimination – was made without any democratic process.” Margaret believes by sending a submission to an MP, it will be passed on to the select committee and put pressure on the government. CAMPAIGN “We must continue with this campaign. We are now in the position that the winter fuel allowance was withdrawn on the basis of trumped up statistics about ‘hot’ countries and now this inquiry about such things is being fiddled and our voice denied again,” she said. “I urge everyone who is disgusted with this arbitrary pursuit of discrimination to write to their MP – even the people who live here but are based in the UK and so receive the benefit should write in support of us. “We must not let this campaign die. We know already the action is being challenged at the European Commission and there are wonderful people who know just how to do that.” The group www.ukgovabusesexpats.co.uk is challenging the government’s decision in Europe. New air routes for Spain

VUELING, THE Spanish airline has announced that it will be operating a direct service from Newcastle International Airport to Barcelona as from March 2016. The low cost airline will have twice weekly flights on a Tuesday and Friday initially but increase to three time a week in June by flying on a Sunday as well. Tickets are already on sale on Vueling web site and start at £80.32 return including taxes. The Aviation Development Manager for Newcastle International Airport, Leon McQuaid, said “we are delighted to welcome Vueing Airlines to our airport for the summer of 2016, providing further choices for our customers looking to visit Barcelona at affordable rates.”

Driving examiners defend strike action THE THIRD day of strikes by driving examiners in Alicante on Wednesday was causing major backlogs and upset for those waiting to take their driving test. by Jeanette Rice The indefinite strike that began on Monday affects 24 DGT staff in Alicante who refuse to work between the hours of 12 noon and 3pm each day and until their demands are met. In a nationwide strike action the examiners have requested that changes are made to how they inform a student if they have passed or failed. They state that as they deliver this information out on the street they are vulnerable to extreme reactions by those who may have failed, with some examiners in the country finding themselves hospitalised. Whilst this has not yet happened in Alicante the examiners feel that to avoid such an incident the reporting of the results should be delayed or given in a safer environment. The examiners also want the amount of tests performed

each day reduced from the thirteen that they currently do and increased staffing to help with the ongoing demand. On Wednesday over 100 tests were disrupted as the examiners representatives explained that they had spent months negotiating with the DGT to resolve the issues but had been forced to call the strike action as no agreements could be made. One unlucky man waiting to take his test, Alberto who is a student in Alicante University, said “I support anyone’s right to strike but this has all been so frustrating for me, I have been trying to take my test since 7th July”. Alberto could not take his test in August because of summer closures and was glad to finally be given an appoint-

ment on Wednesday. Unfortunately he was number eight for the day and by the time the previous seven had been out on their test the time had reached 11.55am. This meant that Alberto, unfortunately, had to leave without his test despite his instructor begging for him to be able to take it that day. Alberto said “I have been given a date of the 22nd September but I am unsure if my driving school can do that date, I live 30 kilometres from Alicante and taking my test was supposed to help me get to University.”

Fishing for info

My son and I visit Torrevieja twice a year. We will be back in Spain in three weeks and have a question that I hope some RTN readers can answer. My son and I enjoy fishing off the rocks in Torrevieja or in a friends boat, off the coast. Last year, a fisherman told me I need to get a fishing license and renew it yearly. In the last eight years I have only fished five or six times and wondered if we need one or not? Can anybody help me with information regarding whether or not I need to get a license for my son and if so, what is the cost, where do I go to get one and what documentation do I need to take with me? To me this licence sounds like the government is just fishing for another tax. The fisherman said my son does not need one because he is a juvenile but I’d rather be safe than sorry. If I get a licence in Torrevieja, is this OK for Orihuela Costa or other parts of Spain. Thanks for any help I can get. George Witfield, Torrevieja

Selling your property

FURTHER TO your correspondent’s email of the week in edition 830. The writer is 100% correct in everything he says. Standard and Poor credit rating agency in a recent article stated prices will rise by 4%. I think that in certain areas with better and larger properties the rise will be greater. Location, location, location. There are Four things that need to be done. One: the seller must research and set his own price, ignore the agents valuation, if they say they cannot sell it move on to one who will. Agents are not the most qualified of people, and generally do not have the expertise required to value a property correctly. Two: Do not pay more than 3% commission, even that is on the high side. If the agents were more proactive they

would sell more instead of relying on low selling prices to generate sales. They would then be able to give lower commission rates. Adding it onto the selling price is not a good idea. It only inflates the price. Don’t be afraid to ask for a lower commission rate. Three: More publicity needs to be given to the aspect of rising prices. The media in the countries where the buyers are coming from should be aware of this. For too long there has been too much negativity about cheap property. The market is changing and cheap prices are on the way out. Four: Ensure your property is in good condition, walk into your home and ask yourself would I buy it like this? Does it need a coat of paint? Is there too much clutter around. The smaller the rooms the

less there should be in it. If the garden is looking untidy do something about it. Don’t sell furnished. Unless you are offered a decent price for the furniture. Don’t give things away. Why should the purchaser get things for nothing. I have even seen cars thrown in as well. You will have to replace everything and that will be expensive. Probably more than shipping it to the UK. People selling in the UK are now able to realise higher prices and the exchange rate is very good. This should make it easier than it has been for a long time to raise sufficient cash to buy a property on the Costa Blanca. There may even be enough left to buy a small pied a terre for those return trips. This is probably the same for Scandinavian countries. Tony Dean, Quesada

The rogue roofer strikes again I WISH that I had read your item concerning this Rogue Roofer before he arrived at my house. He went through the exact procedure outlined in your description. I did not appreciate that he shifted a number of tiles without me noticing, and took a picture of “the problem”. I very much regret that I got him to reset all the roof tiles, which I now know were perfectly OK. He presented a bill for 2000€. Normally I am quite alert about such matters, but this time the conman was so convincing that I paid. I am as cross with myself as I am with him ! Yes, he is of medium height and very stocky, with a German accent and has a blue car, not sure of the make. I have contacted the police, but with little success. First ﬂight arrives at Castellon Airport THE CASTELLON Airport, named the ghost airport, which took more than twelve years to build has now begun receiving flights from Ryanair. by Jeanette Rice THE FIRST Ryanair flight from Stansted touched down and was greeted by many locals pleased to finally see flights arriving and hopefully bringing more business to the area. The cost of building the airport was approximately 200 million euros and it has been a long journey to get the first flight in since the official opening over four years ago. The airport was struck by the economic crisis in Spain, legal difficulties and other teething problems which resulted in the name “ghost airport.” On the first flight from Stansted, which will be a three flights a week service with Ryanair, were Mike and Teresa Webb from Wellinborough, who have a holiday home in Alcossebre, just fifteen minutes from the new airport. Northamptonshire County Councillor, Bill Parker, was also on the flight with his family and said “it is wonderful to be part of aviation history, we received such a welcome with a champagne reception, a celebratory fountain over the aircraft from the airport’s fire service as well as cheering crowds.” Graham and Pauline Wright from Brafield in Northamptonshire had been following the progress of the

airport for the past 20 years, right from the planning stages before official approval and were delighted to finally be able to fly into the new airport. Ryanair have opened up bookings for next years summer period and locals hope that this will encourage other airlines to use the airport.

Financial help for flood victims in Spain

THE CONSORTIUM for Insurance Compensation has allocated between eleven and thirteen million euros to help compensate the many victims that were affected by the flooding that occurred due to the heavy rainfall the beginning of the month. The Balaerics and many mainland areas suffered severe damage during the sudden downpours with over 3,000 incidents being recorded. The Valencia region, which recorded 1,200 claims, will receive between three and four million euros but the majority of the funds will go to Andalusia where most of the damage was reported. The Balaerics will receive one million euros, with 290 claims being made. The consortium said that initially Ibiza was the hardest hit by the storms but the majority of claims actually came from Majorca, 198 in total, particularly Palma and Calvia. The number of claims made have been significantly lower than were made during September 2012 where over 210 million euros were paid out for over 32,000 claims.

THE CITY of Cartagena is celebrating the “Romanos and Carthegineses” fiesta from today until 27th September. by Jeanette Rice

THE ANNUAL event, which is listed as of National Tourist Interest takes place annually and re enacts the battles between the Romans and Carthagnians. Historically from around 600BC the area was inhabited by the Carthagnians but there were many occasions where the Romans tried to enforce power in the region as they battled over vital trading routes. Each day during the fiesta various parts of the historical stories are re enacted either at the port area or the football ground with the “festival base” being located in the football stadium. The port area is the site for many of the battles offering spectacular boat landings and beach battles as the Romans fight to

take control of the city. The event also has an artesian and craft market where visitors can enjoy the locally produced traditional food and drink. The fiesta offers something for all of the family and an opportunity to learn a bit of history for the area. Tonight’s events start at 6.15pm with the arrival of the sacred fire at the port, opening speeches and a march from the port area to the football stadium. On the final day, Sunday 27th September the fiesta ends with the scared fire being extinguished at 9pm followed by a grand firework display at 9.30pm Further information can be found on www.cartaginesesyromanos.es.

Benidorm Pride 2015 brings big news THE TOWN of Benidorm celebrated the Benidorm Pride 2015 with colour, music, and harmony with increasing numbers year on year, this year it is reported they exceeded 10,000.

The previous evening, Friday, saw the “White Party” held up by the church in the Old Town, and many gathered to begin their weekend of Pride 2015 celebrations. However, the breaking news of the weekend was made by the city of Madrid Pride organisers, who attended the Saturday events and were proud to announce that World

Pride 2017 will be held in the Spanish capital of Madrid between June 23rd and July 2nd. As if this news wasn’t show stopping enough the event organisers have also confirmed that talks have taken place with Leire Bibao, of Visit Benidorm, to negotiate the town of Benidorm being a co-host for the worlds largest LBTB calendar event. Not only would this be a huge honour for the resort but it also shows how well the organisation of the Benidorm Pride 2015 was received, and off course would be good for all the tourism related businesses in the area.

HUNDREDS OF Costa Blanca youngsters have pledged to take a giant step forward in aid of endangered elephants and rhinos on Sunday 4th October.

by Jack Troughton FOLLOWING A series of presentations in International and Spanish schools, students will join the Global March for Elephants and Rhinos – raising money for three African-based charities fighting for the future for these majestic animals. An elephant is killed in Africa every 15 minutes and a rhino every 11 hours as they are slaughtered for their ivory and horn.

And a group of Javea residents have organised the march in the Marina Alta town and have been making a series of presentations in schools to recruit support. Following a talk at Xabia International College, it is understood over 100 students will take part and the global march team hopes other youngsters will be sufficiently moved to get involved and raise much-needed sponsorship. The walk starts at 10.30am from the Mas y Mas car park at

Javea’s Arenal. Walkers are asked to contribute 5€ or 10€ for a family. The schoolchildren are not being charged but are encouraged to raise sponsorship. There is a final screening of the film ‘When Giants Fall’ at the Javea Players’ Studio Theatre on Wednesday 23rd September at 7pm. Tickets at 5€ are limited to 60 and the event has almost sold out – however, interested people can email gmferjavea@gmail.com for a seat.

Danny Boy Sanchez, until now the undisputed king of the blues harp in Valencia, will be looking to retain his crown at Bar Meditarraneo in Teulada. And challenging him for the title will be young harmonica player Daniel Tenor, a 38-year-old musician and singer, and expat and Valencia resident Buddy Paul – who is running a workshop the day before and will be all fired up for the competition. The backing band will include gifted keyboard player Hermes Waits and drummer Alvaro Diez – as well as a number of special guests.

They have also started our Christmas Programme 16th December, with some wonderful pieces by John Rutter and others. It was a delight to welcome three new members and they look forward to receiving many more, especially contraltos [the low ladies]. The male section, as always, is fun to work with as are the [high ladies] sopranos. by Patricia Thompson THE LOS Infiernos Perrera is a small dog refuge located in the municipality of Torre Pacheco 10 mins from San Javier Airport and has the mission to receive, care for and re-home abandoned/abused dogs. It is assisted in this by the charity Caminando Con Ellos (registered with Murcia council nÂş G30881924) and a support group (L.I.P.S) who are multinational volunteers that help in the running of the pound as well as re-homing and fund raising activities. Unsurprisingly there is a continual flow of dogs and L.I.P.S

works hard to find suitable homes for all of them in Spain and across the rest of Europe. However until each dog leaves the costs associated with its feeding, medication and veterinary treatment are high so the group is always desperate to raise additional funds. With this aim, nine volunteers will be doing a freefall skydive on the 11th October at the SkydiveMurcia centre in Ontur near Hellin to raise as much money as possible through sponsorship. Each volunteer is paying for their own skydive

Beware: If you have a mortgage or loan, you may be affected by a floor interest clause and not even know it MANY OF our readers who have a personal or mortgage loan with a bank, may have a floor clause, and many do not even know of its existence. The floor clause could cause serious economic damage. AS WE explained some while ago, the floor or minimum interest rate clause, is that by which, even if the reference interest rate of your mortgage or loan (usually Euribor) lowers, the interest rate to be paid by the borrower or debtor will not decrease beyond a certain % set by the bank, known as the “floor” or minimum. Therefore, everyone, whether consumers, selfemployed, companies, etc. who have signed a loan should review it and check if there is any clause whereby the lender, usually a bank, will receive a minimum interest rate, even the variable interest rate agreed downs. Normally floors are fixed at percentages around 3% -5%. Other information of interest includes: How and where? To find out if you are affected by a floor / ground clause you should check your bank statements and your mortgage loan deed or agreement. If you do not know how to do so, please feel free to send us a copy, and we will check for you. Do you have a good chance of winning the claim ?, Yes, the vast majority of courts ruled in favor of consumers, some media say more than 90% . Normally the courts understand that although the floor interest clauses are legal, the banks have not adequately informed consumers and therefore the requirement set by the Spanish Supreme Court for its validity are not satisfied. Therefore, these clauses

are normally declared null and void. Is it worth suing? If the courts declare null and void the ground or minimum interest clauses, this clause will be considered not to be in the agreement anymore, and you will enjoy and pay, normally, a much lower interest rate. You must take into account that the majority of mortgage loans are referenced to the EURIBOR, which it is now about 0.15%. If you do not claim, the bank will be very unlikely to remove it and you will be affected by this unfair clause, paying more interest than you should, throughout the life of your loan, which could be many years. Do I have a right to be paid back the interest overpaid?. Although personally I understand that the declaration of invalidity (null and void) should have as a logical consequence the return of all interest overpaid, the Supreme Court of Spain understands that banks must repay the overpaid interest from after May 2013. For all the reasons above, we encourage all individuals, companies, and self-employed, who have loans, to review them to see if there exists a ground/minimum or floor interest clause. Or you could send us a copy of the deeds or loan agreements for us to review them, without any obligation. And the Legion’s appeal organisers are again hoping for a bumper year leading up to Remembrance Day – last year’s appeal raised a record 188,324.80€, a 15,000€ increase on the 2013 figure, itself a record. The parade of standards starts at noon in Calle Castello

and proceeds along the Levante Beach to the dais at the Rincon de Loix. The parade will be held in the presence of the Mayor of Benidorm Antonio Perez, the British Vice Consul Lloyd Milen, and the Chairman of District North of the Royal British Legion in Spain, Nigel Hails. RTN was told last year the Poppy Appeal was launched in Torrevieja but Benidorm has been selected again because “it

was so well done in 2013”. Large crowds are expected to line the route and to hear the speeches at the dais – and Legion members will be shaking buckets to collect donations and get the appeal off to a successful start. As the local hosts, Benidorm and District Branch of the Royal British Legion will be awarded the money raised on the day to boost its Poppy Appeal total.

September 2015 Meeting of the Vega Baja Garden Club The first meeting of the new season of the Vega Baja Garden Club was hosted by Irene Davis, the Club Secretary. Irene and her husband Alan held a wonderful Barbeque for the Club’s members during the summer break. It was a real opportunity for everyone to get to know each other a little better and to enjoy the excellent fare that Irene and Alan had prepared. The garden was of course, of great interest to members, especially as when they moved in, only 18 months ago, the house was surrounded by uncultivated and wild land. The first part of the garden has been planned and planted, using pathways to define a circular motif, with a jacaranda as a focal central tree. Alan, a Club member, gave a most interesting presentation about his experiences of gardening in Kerala, in Southern India, where he spent nine years working on the initially bare garden area around his house. It was fascinating to hear not only of the plants of the area, but also of the animals, birds and butterflies; the snakes, rats and sunbirds, for instance, and to see a photograph of a visiting elephant! The usual raffle of plants was then held. The October meeting promises to be great fun, John Howes will give a talk about the planting and care of spring bulbs. This ties in with the start of a new growing competition. This year it will be for growing the best Narcissus bulbs, to be judged in months to come! There will also be a photographic competition, this time for the best close up photo of a flower from your garden, terrace or patio. If you would like to enter, please print out your photograph onto an A5 sheet of paper and bring it along to the next meeting. Entries will be judged by the members. The next meeting will be held at Bar Trasgu, Calle Alicante 12, Formentera del Segura, on Monday 5th October at 2.15 for a 2.30 start. Controlling mosquitos and midges

Fifty years ago much of the Spanish Mediterranean coastline was still marshland or drained marshland for growing vegetables and fruit. Except in places like Tossa del Mar, Benidorm and Torremolinos the idea of mass tourism had yet to be born and most Spaniards lived in or returned from the cities to holiday in the cooler mountain villages a few kilometres inland. Coastal living except in small fishing communities had been avoided for centuries for fear of marauding pirates from north Africa – hence the many ancient watch towers along the coasts – and the mosquitoes and malaria, yellow fever and cholera of polluted waters draining from villages often into the sea or small lagoons. 1950’s and early 60’s package tour holiday makers to Spain will remember the recommended pre holiday injections and pills. Luckily DDT, until banned as a dangerous chemical, cleared the major swarms of malaria carrying mosquitoes and modern sanitation installations cleaned up village effluents - until overloaded by excessive building! But damp conditions inevitably attract mosquitoes and midges to the countryside and some gardens and big bighting tiger mosquitoes are now occurring not only in the Ebro delta but also in the Valencia and Alicante coastal marshes . So what can be done to minimise the potential problem. 20 PRACTICAL WAYS OF REDUCING MOSQUITO AND MIDGE POPULATIONS IN YOUR GARDEN Don’t purchase a property near marsh lands, rivers, lakes or land that floods after storms. Plant insect inhibiting plants around the house especially under the windows most likely to be opened. Possible plants include lantanas, basil, citronella lemongrass,

graveolens scented pelargoniums, chives, society garlic and normal garlic in pots near doorways or on windowsills. When we had a walking holiday in Mauritius and Reunion Island we were advised to rub lantana leaves in our hands and then on any exposed skin to deter mosquitoes and midges. Locals used oil or water extracts on a regular basis. Hang bunches of herbs on the walls of covered terraces to provide hiding places for insect eating geckoes. Hang bunches of rue alongside or above doorways. Use a garlic concoction as an insecticide in the flower and vegetable garden. Cover water butts with well sealing lids and use the water regularly to stop larvae developing and hatching out and creating space for the next rain. Have a pond with fish and frogs. The water will attract any wind blown mosquitoes and midges and the fish and frogs will soon devoir any mature insects or larvae in or around the pond. Don’t be surprised to see frogs jumping half a metre into the air to grab a midge on the flower of a lavender plant. From personal observation they have amazing eyesight as well as accurate jumping ability. Construct a rockery with holes for lizards which eat a variety of flying insects. Make Victorian style pomanders by sticking cloves into an orange and placing on window sills to deter mosquitoes from entering and also place on outside dining tables to deter them while dinning. Check that your regular perfumes and after shaves are not insect attractors. Soak some cotton wool with the liquids and place on a saucer on the terrace as dusk approaches in an area where an outside light will eventually light it up

and watch what happens. Set the lawn irrigation system to come on during the night and not in the evening when the family, pets and insects are still moving around. Don’t over water terrace or house plants. Don’t leave rain water standing in buckets, watering cans, or wheel barrows. Use it to water plants in covered areas, pour into a water butt or pond or dampen the compost heap if possible. If you invest in a liquid gas fired mosquito attracting/ catching machine size it according to your size of property. An oversized machine may attract all the mozzies from the entire urbanisation and not just your garden! If you buy a terrace heater than burns liquefied gas recognise that these produce carbon dioxide that attract mosquitoes and midges in the same way as mosquito machines so preferably use on terraces well away from the house. If you leave bedroom windows open in the evening leave the lights off. Install a bat box under the eaves as bats hunt flying insects at dusk. Use perfumed flares around the garden especially when having a barbecue party. Install an electric insect stunner. Set up bird tables, water bowls and nesting boxes to increase insect eating garden bird population. Such actions can avoid the expense of unsightly mosquito screens on windows and doors, chemical based insect sprays or chemical block evaporators especially in bedrooms. Act now before the humid autumn after Gota Frias and next spring and enjoy the remaining balmy evenings and nights without resorting to mosquito nets.

The winner and a partner will be “guests of honour” at great shows, dinners, special events and the 40th big birthday bash. Theatre journalists Benny Davis and Jack Troughton have been recruited to help Javea Players chairman Mike Harvey select the winning design. The group’s first proper home was Hall. Unfortunately it was discovered the Casa de Falange – later demolished the group was not legally allowed to to make way for Javea’s Casa de use the building and so it moved again; Cultura. It moved to the old cinema in to the Union Musical in Gata, where Benitachell – productions included ‘Oh shows have been presented since 1993. By Jack Troughton EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS in Nepal will benefit from a ‘Live Aid’ style free concert staged in Orba organised by composer and music director Gordon Lawson. Spanish and British musicians gave their time to perform at the town’s Casa de Cultura and helped Gordon raise more than 1,100€ as the audience generously left a donation following the performance. Gordon was inspired to help people who had suffered following the two earthquakes that devastated the region. And this week Gordon said the 30th August show had been a success. “It has still to be decided where the money will actually be sent to; but very likely some of the children in Nepal who have become disabled as a result of the devastation will receive assistance.”

Time was when you were consulted in advance, not called in to pick up the pieces, but you do what you can. Angel of NYC

AT THE highest point of the Bethseda Fountain in Central Park stands the mighty Angel of New York. With wings wide open, this tireless angel has watched over the Big Apple since 1864 and he sees all that is going on across the five boroughs of New York City. It is said that if you sit by this fountain long enough the whole city will walk by. Some people will say that The Angel of the Water is hopefully doing a good job, whereas sadly others will wonder where he was when fate and destiny were up against them. Like any Angel they are here on Earth as a guest and as such they have their work cut out, but this Angel has had more than his a fair share of the conflict that is New York. Prosperity and poverty live side by side on the sidewalk as rich and poor live out their very different daily lives. You can sadly see those who are slipping away from a comfortable living to embrace the horror of the street and literal destitution. It hits you in the face on the coldest of cold nights and in the sweltering heat of an August day. People seen late at night, lingering over coffee in a 24 hour Mc.Donalds are suspiciously inactive and static. Some are wearing the old suit they used to work in when they were employed, and many are carrying grim, battered luggage, smart enough in the past but now showing signs of dilapidation. Old department store carrier bags and well worn clothing become clues to what was and what will be in time. The homeless shelters have a full programme of activities, but they are primarily to keep the tatty, the desperate and the vulnerable away from the general public, especially the tourists. A plethora of restaurants send unsold sandwiches and soups to the feeding centres that are Manhattan wide. Hip restaurants charge an extra 10% optional charge to diners enabling them to send a donation to those who need. The Salvation Army are out there doing what they do best for those who have found themselves going under. It is illegal to beg in the City, but if you have your eyes and your wits about you you realise that there are so many who cannot ask you but you know they need a dollar from you.....the difference between eating and not eating! Nobody can eat the huge portions of food that restaurants serve, that’s why you see in all the movies that nobody is able to eat everything on their plate. I always ask for a doggy bag. Then I can slide a few dollars into the plastic pack and find someone on the way home who is on their uppers, someone who needs it more than I do. Believe you me it isn’t difficult to find someone down on their luck, someone looking through a trash can for supper. At this stage you may feel that that Angel out there in Central Park really can’t be doing the very best job. Whilst apartments on Central Park are amongst the most expensive on the Planet only the squirrels live for free these days. With limos turning at every corner and Tiffany displaying billions of dollars of jewellery, it is hard to fathom the great divide of rich and poor. I was once waiting for a friend at Grand Central Terminal with my collar turned up in a sprinkling of snow, when a big black limo arrived outside a neighbouring hotel. A smartly dressed black couple exited from it wearing evening attire. Her sparkling dress was worn with diamonds and she shivered a little under a white fur stole. He was wearing a tuxedo and smoking a cigar. Together they showed wealth, taste and a joy of success. Just over the road was a woman in her late sixties wearing just a petticoat. I was drawn to the colour of her skin which was the same pale blue colour as her underwear. She was coughing and her haggard face was terrifying to look at. I felt that she had only days to live, and what was she doing out on the street on a cold December night? Many ignored her, turned away in horror, and I did nothing that I should have, but what could I have done? Snatching the five dollar bill from me, it was a voluntary action for her, but it didn’t scratch the surface of her needs that night. I shall never forget the guilty feeling I had as I walked arm in arm with my friend towards a warm inviting Theatre on 42nd street, looking forward to dinner at Sardi’s afterwards. The Police have a Coat Drive every winter in the City that never sleeps. You can take clean and warm unwanted coats to any Precinct in the New York area and they will be distributed to those who need them. I never travel without either taking a spare coat or I buy a warm jacket I can pass on to those who need it more than I do; who needs really warm coats here in Spain? There is an immediate photo in my mind of that invisible, needy woman that night. Her frightening dying eyes and thin tortured body will always be there, and she was not alone that night. As the colder autumnal weather starts to blow across Broadway, I am asking the Angel in the Park to do a good job and I know he will do, hopefully, what he can.

Kenny, I have been told that I will never be able to connect with my cousin, Amy, because she took her life, and it is a sin. Marc I. I do not know why so many people are telling the bereaved this nonsense. I have been in spiritual contact with countless numbers of people who took their own lives; and it is theirs to do so, and not a sin in my books. To say that life lets people down is an understatement, and I would like to say that though life is a truly precious thing; suicide is up to the individual and their right. I have reunited many with loved ones who have overdosed, hung themselves, even, once, flung themselves under a subway train; and for me there is no barrier to ever attempting to make a connection with every due respect...who am I to judge anyone anyway?

Before its too late

I am a 42 year old man, and miserable in my marriage. I haven’t been happy for years. There are no children. As I approach middle age, I find myself wanting more, before it‘s too late. I see other couples who are happy, and I want a relationship like that. I know I won’t ever be happy with my wife - the relationship is dead. How do I leave? It’s time to start a serious conversation with your wife. It may be that she is just as miserable. If you feel the relationship is dead, and cannot be revived, then you have to face up to doing something about it. Lots of marriages / relationships simply run their course after a few years, and it can be no one’s fault in particular. Going to marriage guidance counselling sessions will help you both address the situation, and work towards separation, if that’s what you decide you want. You could both be much happier living life apart. Don’t waste any more time feeling miserable. Have that conversation with your wife.

Eating me up

I went along to my wife’s 30 year school reunion. I got talking to an old female classmate of hers, and was shocked to discover that my wife was quite promiscuous at school, and was known as being quite easy. I haven’t spoken to her yet, but I can’t stop thinking about it. She told me about two men she dated at College, but she didn’t tell me about any previous boyfriends at school, and it‘s eating me up. This is something you have to talk about with your wife. It’s natural to feel jealousy, but remember this was over 30 years ago, and we were all different people when we were younger. She may not have told you about these relationships because she was only a teenager, and they were simply not important enough to mention. Besides, she may regret her actions, and possibly will have wanted to put it behind her. Also, you need to get the right story from her. You may not be getting the correct information from talking to someone at a party, where the drink is flowing.

Keyboard keys wont work HELLO AUNTY, I have a Toshiba laptop model Satellite C660D140. The keyboard is Azerty and programmed in language Dutch (Belgium). I upgraded some days ago from Windows 7 to Windows 10. After this for whatever reason the keys Q,B,N caps lock do not function anymore. I went back to Windows 7 but the problem persists and I have to send e mails via Notebook now which is very inconvenient. Would you be able to help/fix this? Steven Aunty says: It sounds as if your keyboard settings are not set up correctly, which is why buttons do not produce the required text. You have to go to the Control Panel, and in the “Region and Language” you have the option to change the keyboard settings and input methods.

‘Stop running this script?’ HELLO AUNTY, I am repeatedly getting: “Stop running this script? A script on this page is causing your web browser to run slowly. if it continues to run, your computer might become unresponsive.” warnings coming on screen while on the internet. Can you advise me on how to rectify the situation please. Regards Bob Aunty says: You are running a script or add on that is having problems running in w10s internet browser - Edge. This may be as it has imported the add on from your previous version of windows, and that is not

compatible with w10. Which add on it is I have no idea, so it may be a case of disabling and running again. Or use a different internet browser like Chrome or Firefox. But as in your send email, you are getting the message when not even using the internet, then it sounds like one of your programs you have installed is having problems - so you will have to find which it is (using running programs in task manager), and see if any of the programs you have that start up and run when W10 is started have any issues with W10. You may need to install a new version of a program.

Reverting back DEAR AUNTY, A few months ago I bought a new HP computer, installed Windows 8.1. I received a message: Windows 10 is available, now is the time to download for free. I did . It took a few hours and got a message Windows 10 successfully downloaded but… after putting my password in I get a beautiful colourful picture on the screen but no signs or information how to start the program. How to manage the start page. Nothing. Simply said NADA. This means that I cannot use the computer. Any idea what the reason could be and how I can solve this unknown problem. Windows 10 seems a very attractive program for me. Maybe I have to go back to Windows 8.1, but if the computer doesn´t work? Carlos, Moraira. Aunty says: In W10 you have the option to revert back to your previous operating system. Go to the sign in screen, hold down the shift key on your keyboard while clicking the Power button on the screen, continue to hold down the shift key while clicking Restart., continue to hold down the shift key until the Advanced Recovery Options menu appears. Click Troubleshoot, then click Advanced options. And you will have the options to either repair W10, or go back to your previous operating system.

Reflexive verbs continued We are into our second week of learning about reflexive verbs in Spanish and have got as far as looking at one example – namely “me lavo” (“I wash myself”, or as is more usual in English “I have a wash”). We have seen that the subject “yo” has been omitted and that the object “me” means “myself” and goes in front of the verb. This is more fully explained in last week’s article. Sticking to the washing theme for a moment, most of us these days stretch to having a shower, and again in Spanish this is expressed as a reflexive verb. The verb “to shower” is “duchar” and can be used in the standard way as is “Ducho a los niños” (“I shower the children”). However, it is more often used reflexively – “me ducho por la mañana” (“I shower myself in the morning” or “I have a shower in the morning”), remembering that “me” means “myself” and is the object of the verb. In a fuller form it is “yo me ducho”. If you think about it most of the things we do in the morning we do to ourselves before we face the general public, and so “I get up” is also a reflexive verb. This is how it works. The verb is “levantar” which means “to raise” or “to lift”. If you take a moment to look in the dictionary, you will find that “levantar” is listed, followed by “levantarse”, which you will see translates as “to get up”. The literal meaning is “to lift oneself up” as the “se” part tacked on the end is the reflexive particle “oneself”. Once the verb conjugates, that is changes according to different subjects, then that “se” (or equivalent) pops in front of the verb,

like this: “Yo me levanto” or “me levanto” (I get up, or literally “I lift myself up”). I hope this is making some sense! Now we can put together a whole sentence “Normalmente me levanto a los siete, pero a veces me levanto a las diez” (“I usually get up at seven o’clock but sometimes I get up at ten”). So far we have only looked at the “I” form, that is the “first person” form, but of course we also need to be able to say “yourself” “himself” etc. We will stick to the verb “levantarse” and see how it changes. Me levanto nos levantamos Te levantas os levantáis Se levanta se levantan All of those little words are reflexive pronouns, so translate literally like this: “me” - myself, “te” -yourself, “se” - himself, herself, yourself (formal) oneself, “nos” - ourselves, “os” - yourselves” and “se” - themselves, yourselves (formal). For some reason whenever I teach this in a class a few people tell me that they have never heard of the word “os” before, almost as though they think I might be making it up! I can assure everyone that “os” is a perfectly common and correct Spanish word and it means “yourselves” in the familiar plural form. If I was talking to a couple I might ask: “¿A qué hora os levantáis?” to which they might reply “Nos levantamos a las 8” or perhaps “Mind your own business what’s it got to do with you?” See you next week for more reflections on reflexives.

Sensational Iberian Open at Javea Bowls Club

by Patricia Thompson Wow, wow, wow!! I cannot believe that there has ever been a better set of Finals at the Javea Bowls Iberian Open. This highly competitive, prestigious and lucrative tournament, over 3500 euro in Prize Money, came to an end last weekend with some fabulous bowling served up for the spectators. Not for the first time in its’ long history the Finals had to be spread over two days due to the storms experienced earlier in the week. It is impossible to congratulate everyone but I have to mention the Mixed Triples Final which came to a fantastic finale as the team of Rod Warnes, Chris Evans and Clive English overturned a two shot deficit entering the 17th end to beat Yvonne Browne, Bert McLean and Yvonne Briden. Then on Sunday the Ladies

Rinks came down to the very last shot of the match when Skip Carol Meare took out shot bowl to secure a narrow victory for her, Olive Lutz, Jenny Rich and Carol Davey against Chris Mawson, Sheila Lucas, Mary Cockell and Maggie Lawley. Yet another fantastic match saw Dudley Davies play possibly the shot of the tournament, again on the last end, to ensure that he and his wife Carol beat home players Matt Taylor and Velia Wood to earn a 400 euro first prize and a 500 euro bonus in the Mixed Aussie Pairs! If that was not enough to satisfy the most eager spectator, the Ladies Singles went to 28 ends before Chris Evans finally won an incredible tussle with Gail Chick by 21 to 20. In the other disciplines Alex Fisher beat John Coates in the

Gents Singles and possibly became the oldest winner ever, at the age of 79 and the Gents Rinks saw a win for Dave Gardiner, Denis Reeves, John Pittaway and Clive English against Jonathan Barr, David Meare, Phil Woodhead and John North. By Tony Myles THE ANNUAL Continental Wealth Management Golf Day took place last week at La Sella and the usual excitement was enhanced by the presence of two very special guests. There are few greater stars of Bath and England Rugby than Matt Perry and Phil de Glanville and it was these guys that joined the other competitors for an excellent day of golf organised by Campbell Lamont. The conditions were perfect with temperatures in the mid 20s and a gentle breeze. The prayers of all the locals for rain had been well satisfied just a few days beforehand and so the course was set up to be a tough test for all handicaps. The wet conditions of the previous week had made the fairways lush with less roll on the ball. The VIP guests were first to tee-off and despite a delayed arrival and a couple of small beers (!) they were both on superb form and, even though Continental Wealth Management maintained the flow of refreshments throughout the day, they both demonstrated that their expert sporting abilities are not

confined to the rugby pitch. The golf concluded on schedule and everyone moved across to the Poolside bar in the Marriott where the caterers were awaiting with an enormous BBQ. But not before the speeches and prize presentation. And the winners were... In third place with a course matching 36 points was DEAN STOGSDILL Far more impressive was ANTHONY DOWNS, CEO of Continental Wealth Management who only managed second place despite scoring 40 points which will ensure he was the benefit of a lower handicap for the next event. In first place and shrugging off sleep deprivation and reasonable amounts of alcohol was the rugby legend MATT PERRY with 42 points. His colleague Phil de Glanville also did exceptionally well, securing seventh place with 34 points. Both guests had to pack up and leave early the following morning for various

duties in the forthcoming Rugby World Cup but both expressed their immense pleasure and a firm commitment to return. Finally special mention must be made of Grant-a-Wish. This is the favourite charity for Continental Wealth Management. They provide food and shelter to underprivileged and handicapped people in this area and the proceeds of the raffle, plus the funds raised by the auction benefitted this excellent organisation to the tune of €2200. The general topic of conversation was Rugby and there was a general impression that in the RWC, England would do very well but their major adversary was likely to be New Zealand. Matt and Phil will be helping Bay Radio and Continental Wealth Management with the regular updates during the competition.

Audi A3 e-tron Sportback WHAT IS THE POINT OF A HYBRID? I HAVE often found myself asking this question as I sat inside a Honda Insight or Toyota Prius. Yes, a petrol engine that can charge an electric motor seems a good idea. But the drawback with both of the above is that they can only be driven at around 30mph for a short period on the battery before it gives up the ghost and needs recharging by the petrol engine. In short fine for crawling around town for a mile or two but that’s it. To me they are about as appealing as a dynamo on a bicycle. Not vastly eco-friendly and expensive in my opinion, not only to buy but to run. And then I was presented with the Audi A3 Sportback etron. Was I going to be equally underwhelmed? The facts are that on a full tank that costs over £30 at present the 1.4-litre petrol engine will travel around 280 miles. My 13-year old diesel Ford Fiesta will travel twice as far for this price. The Audi’s battery will cover around 25 miles depending on speed. So things here have improved, thank goodness. And the Audi will allow the driver to travel at up to 80mph while using the ev mode (battery) but obviously if travelling at this speed five or six miles is more likely. Even this is a vast improvement on what Toyota and Honda have been offering to date. There’s a fairly sizeable box of tricks in the boot (which can be removed to free up storage space) that enables the car to be charged externally, too – even from a standard plug socket in the house. All of which makes the A3 an attractive proposition to the affluent motorist who just wants to pootle about locally. It’s also pretty fast; 0-60mph in 7.6 seconds. The low profile tyres do mean that the cabin is a little noisy. But overall the interior is well laid out as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz and the seats are supportive and comfortable.

Driving in the fog does see me fiddling around trying to turn on the fog lights; the switches for which are unhelpfully hidden by the steering wheel. The ev mode (battery) is located in the centre of the dashboard and is a faff to operate because I find myself taking my eye off the road to operate it. When the battery runs out it does not seem to automatically start recharging without driver intervention which is irritating; I drive some distance wondering why the battery is not automatically recharging. When the battery is charging driving can feel a bit clunky at times and when switching from battery to petrol mode. The car seems to automatically start in ev mode and then as soon as the accelerator is pushed down too far starts using the petrol. This annoys me because I like to use either one or the other but perhaps this isn’t the best way of driving such a vehicle. I drive to Devon and wish to use the sat nav, only to discover that it is the most unfriendly system I have come across. Turn the dial to input Dalwood near Axminster and it insists on taking me to Liverpool. My wife and I, at first, patiently repeat this request many many times before utterly exasperated, we return to map reading and asking locals. We do finally reach our destination and park up. In the morning we notice a vain Great Tit has taken to sitting on the wing mirror and looking at himself. It is so funny to watch but whenever I try to take a photo or video it flies off. I like the styling and the glass on the front of the roof is attractive but this area is prone to stone chips. While stone chips on paint can be touched up, chipped glass is another matter altogether. The A3 has always been a joy to drive

and even though this new hybrid is a big improvement and has won accolades, I would still plump for the diesel. At over £35,000 being eco-friendly is still an expensive pastime and hybrids need to improve still further for me to be impressed. New price: circa £35,000 Top speed: 138mph 0-60mph: 7.6secs Economy: Audi claims it will deliver 176.6mpg! In reality you’re lucky to get 30mpg or even less.
