A modern transparent and regulated company dealing in F/X for more than 30 years, Moneycorp has its corporate dealing floor opposite Harrods in Knightsbridge, its headquarters are around the corner in Sloane Street, while the private client section, customer service and market development departments, together with the ‘back office’ – which handles the paperwork and settlements of trading – are based in Victoria.

IMPORTANT The importance of Spanish expats means there are offices on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol, a vital element when offering personal service.

However, the most publically seen ‘face’ of Moneycorp is its bureaux de change premises at Gatwick, Stansted, and Southampton Airports, and in the Oxford Street and Knightsbridge areas of West London.

Supplying these retail outlets and wholesale deliveries of cash to other bureaux means there is also a strongroom filled with pallets piled high with banknotes. For security reasons, it was the one area where the doors were not thrown open to an RTN inspection.

On the corporate dealing floor, the team kick off with a morning briefing.

The value of sterling is sliding against the euro and the downward trend is highly visible on monitors dominating the room.

Key account manager Marianne Gilmore explained all staff were proactive and were frequently dealing with finance directors of medium sized public limited companies and as such needed to be “completely in the picture.”

Clients were mainly companies involved in import and export and the majority of trades involved the euro or the US dollar and she said the banks “are not focused” in providing a service

or giving a good spread of prices to clients unless they completed a high volume of trades.

BUSINESS “A client looking to move £150,000 or £200,000 will often get a poor rate from a bank – but nowhere near as bad as the kind of rate you will get from a bank as a private client,” said Marianne. “At least a bank will recognise a corporate client in a bid to get repeat business.

“We are more competitive on the rate to start with because we need to make less profit than a bank because of our lower overheads and volume of business.

“We also want to help people take advantage of changes in F/X rates. A bank will not ring someone up about a move in his favour but we do, to take advantage of a market 24/7 and make sure clients have access to the information.”

Both corporate and private clients also have the advantage of dealing directly with real Moneycorp people. It means no-one is left on hold listening to music, while all calls are recorded for security on both sides.

At Victoria, RTN talked to David Kerns, Dealing Manager for private clients.

He said certain members of staff were ‘fully dealer qualified’ and others, including himself, were Members of the Society of Technical Analysts, a recognised qualification that enabled them to research currency price history and anticipate future moves in valuation.

“If I go into a bank next week to convert £100,000, I will be in a branch and speaking to someone over the till at the foreign desk and be offered the bank’s daily rate. It will not be far off the tourist rate,” he said.

“They will offer nothing else than that, no guidance and no ideas what is happening in the market and whether it is a good time to trade or whether the market may move in my favour in the near term.”

However, he accepted that many private clients worked against a tight time frame governing when they could trade. They must be happy with what they can get and not look back in horror because they can not always hit a high or low in the rate.”

Banks currently handle around 80 percent of the foreign exchange and international transfer market. Moneycorp aims to reduce the figure.

One hundred thousand golfers visit Murcia

by Keith Nicol GOLF STILL remains one of the biggest attractions in the Mucian tourism marketplace. Golf attracts thousands of tourists to the region of Murcia.

It is estimated that around 100,000 people travel to the region to practice this sport, representing 1.7% of total visitors. Golfers also spend more money on their vacation, as their average daily spending amounts to about 150€. This data places the golf tourist expenditure as the number one spend in this region after the business visitor. In all, the total expenditure of golfers in the region amounts annually to nearly 150 million€, representing 5.4% of all generated tourism revenue.

In the high season for golf, the courses of Mar Menor, La Torre, Saurines, El Valle, Hacienda Riquelme and Alhama were at 70% capacity, with about 700 players a day. The national amateur comes mainly from Madrid, Catalonia, Castilla-León, Castilla-La Mancha and Valencia. They travel, in the case of foreigners, as couples (50%), followed by those who come with family or friends (25%). Meanwhile, residents in Spain travel further accompanied by family (55.2%), followed by the couple (34.5%) and friends (13.8%), just to play golf.

Among the foreigners, the most common age range is between 46 and 55 years, while changing between 36 and 45 years for residents in Spain.

The main means of transport is the private car, while aircraft is used by

almost 40% of the visitors, a proportion much higher than in other tourist typologies. More than half of these tourists plan well in advance, between one and three months in most cases.

When choosing the accommodation most people book directly through the internet, telephone and ‘smartphone’ (60%), while 28% go to a travel agency and 12% to real estate.

From Murcia Tourism, an agency under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which is responsible for the national and international promotion of the region, they noted that for more than three years the Administration decided to specialize in promoting golf tourism, especially when the region has expanded from just five to twenty-one courses in the last few years.

by Keith Nicol LUIS MARIA Pizana, Torrevieja’s Councillor for Sports reported that over the past few weeks several Swedish professional triathletes have conducted training sessions in Torrevieja.

Specifically, five members of the Stockholm Triathlon Club chose Torrevieja as the destination for their annual sports campus. The group have fully utilized Torrevieja’s natural and custom built facilities including training on the beaches, Natural Park of the Lagunas de Torrevieja and La Mata and gym work.

Torrevieja’s beaches have been used for

swimming training and the group noted that especially satisfying was the experience they had with their biking program. Their cycle training program had been devised by the Department of Sports Tourism in the Department of Sports, and through an extraordinary partnership of the Cycling Club of Torrevieja, and their president Manuel Penalver, they organized several training sessions for these five athletes who enjoyed the environment of the city and its surroundings. For relaxation, the group also took time out to visit some of the region’s most iconic and recognizable attraction.

Torrevieja building has closer ties with the EU

By Keith Nicol EURODISEA IS one of the latest projects that the municipality has become involved with, in order to build better networking opportunities around the EU. Last Tuesday, May 14, the Councillor of European Union Relations, Agustina Esteve Huertas had a meeting in the offices of Manuel Reig, from the Department of Economics and Public Administration of European Projects Department of the Generalitat Valalenciana. Elenora Rossi was also present, as she has been selected to develop practices within the European program ‘Eurodisea’ in the city of Torrevieja, for a period of five months, from June 1 to October 31 this year 2013.

This European program is part of the Assembly of the European Region and funded by the European Social Fund ESF 2007-2013 Po of Valencia. Elenora Rossi will support the Department for Relations with the European Union council of Torrevieja, for study and possible networking with national and international partners in order to develop European projects that are beneficial to the city of Torrevieja.

Operation Captura nets 50 Moran’s arrest in Calpe

by Jack Troughton THE ARREST of one of Britain’s ‘most wanted’ fugitives on the Costa Blanca was the 50th success for Operation Captura campaign run

by Crimestoppers and the Serious Organised Crime Agency.

Andrew Moran, said to be a master of disguise, was arrested by Spanish police last Friday afternoon as he sunned himself by the side of the pool at a villa in Calpe.

The 31-year-old was regarded as dangerous and violently resisted arrest but will now be extradited back to the UK – and it was later revealed two guns and ammunition were seized by officer, while Moran slept with a machete under the bed.

He appeared in the latest Captura appeal in 2011 when he was one of ten men believed to have fled to the Spanish Costas. In total the campaign has made public 65 criminals thought to be in Spain.

Moran was nearly snared last November but narrowly avoided capture when he rammed two police cars near Orihuela and sped off on the wrong side of the busy AP7 motorway to vanish again.

Lord Ashcroft, the founder and Chairman of the Crimestoppers charity said: “Andrew Moran has been on the Operation Captura list for over 18 months and I am delighted he has been located.

“To have amassed 50 arrests from a total of 65 appeals is a remarkable achievement for Crimestoppers and our partner organisations, and I am proud this campaign continues to go from strength to strength and

brings criminals to justice.”

Chief Executive Michael Laurie said the campaign was a successful partnership between Crimestoppers, SOCA, the Spanish Police and the public.

“I hope with this partnership we can bring the remaining 15 accused criminals to justice.

With the support of the public in Spain, Britain and further afield, we can rid the streets of these wanted individuals – and, by passing information to Crimestoppers anonymously, I can assure you they will never know who you are.”

Moran was convicted in his absence for involvement in a terrifying armed raid on a Royal Mail van in May 2005 at Colne in Lancashire. His gang wielded a handgun, a machete and a baseball bat and one guard was assaulted before the villains escaped with £25,000.

The trial took place in Burnley in February 2009 but during the judge’s summing up, Moran, from Salford, assaulted a security guard, vaulted the dock and escaped – subsequently being convicted in his absence.

SOCA’s head of investigations, Matt Burton said: “Moran thought he could escape capture by fleeing to Spain, frequently changing his appearance and using false identities.

“He, like others, have discovered there is no hiding place. SOCA and its partners have the capability to pursue criminals relentlessly, track them down, and put them behind bars.”

Wrong place, wrong time … wrong victims!

BUNGLING BURGLAR 21-year-old Moroccan Mohammed Boujida thought it was a good idea to sneak into a four-star hotel in the Santa Ponsa area of Majorca to rob a few guests. He entered one of the darkened rooms and began searching belongings only to be surprised by three far-from-sleeping policemen – three visiting members of the British Transport Police!

The British Bobbies say that Mohammed tried to flee and so they immediately restrained him.

He promptly fainted and had to be revived before being handed over to local police who just happened to be attending a football convention nearby! Boujida pleaded guilty to attempted burglary in a court in Palma and was sentenced to eight months in prison.

New Bike Lanes for the Market

by Keith Nicol WORD ON the street has been very quiet as to if and when Torrevieja’s market might be moving from it’s present position to over beside the waterpark. Work on the new zone has been sporadic over the last 23 months, to say the least. However, things took an upturn this week when the Councillor for Infrastructure, Planning and the Environment, Isabel Bonig, announced that works for Markets Precinct in the Enclave 10, which has a budget of 5,328,885€ and is part of the Plan Confidence of the Generalitat Valenciana, are not paralyzed, but they are making a change to the project to include in it bike lanes, as requested by the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon.

The mayor’s intention is to set the bike path from the centre of Torrevieja through to the Sport City and running into the planned future parkland La Hoya Sector and Municipal Recreation area I Albentosa. Bonig said that work will recommence in a few days on the multipurpose market and

car parking zone. The new market zone is located in a large open multipurpose area of over 60,000 square meters where Spain’s largest Friday market will relocate to. There will also be a space provided here for concerts and other events.

by Keith Nicol ON FRIDAY, the Deputy of Provincial Tourism, Joaquín Albaladejo, along with the General Director of Tourism of the Generalitat Valenciana, Sebastian Fernandez, and Torrevieja’s Councillor of Tourism, Luis Maria Pizana, met with 170 national travel agents, in the III Gastronomic exposition of typical local products at the Centre Turismo (CDT) of Torrevieja.

Before the show, and during the morning of Friday, travel agents visited, the waterfront and most emblematic places of the city, including the floating museum, the Cultural Casino and Eras de la Sal. The visit was organized for the third consecutive year by the Association of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation “South Alicante” in collaboration with Provincial Tourism and the Municipality of Torrevieja. It has a special significance for the city, since travel agents can also see firsthand fo9r themselves the festive atmosphere that Torrevieja offers through the May Fair and other activities.

The 170 travel agents spent four days in local hotels and tourist apartments that make up the South Alicante association. Other destinations visited during their stay included Guardamar, Orihuela and Cartagena. Travel Familiarization Trips ‘FAM TRIPS’ are typical thoughout the travel industry, organized by local travel destinations for travel agents, to ensure they are “familiar” with the product.

News laws to aid the coast

by Keith Nicol THE REGION of Murcia has 727 homes that face demolition due to the passing of the new Laws of the Coast, Last Thursday. Greenpeace demonstrators were arrested during the passing of the bill, as they scaled the roof of congress to unfurl a banner reading “El PP vende nuestra costa’, or the PP is selling off our coasts.

The government delegate in the Region of Murcia, Joaquin Bascuñana, said that the new Law of Costs “inexcusable duty responds to coastal protection.” In his view, “the new text is designed to address situations that the 1988 law could not solve.” “This is a solution to the existing law on the basis of greater protection from development excesses, greater legal protection for rights holders and increased eco-

nomic activity,” he stated.

Another person facing eviction takes their own life

By Keith Nicol A RESIDENT of La Nora took his own life after receiving an eviction notice last week.

His wife thought he was at work when he found the body hanging in the garage of the house. The man, aged between 40 and 45 years committed suicide at his home in the village of Murcia La Nora after receiving an eviction notice, according to sources in the local police in Murcia.

The victim had not been in contact with the Platform of People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) from Murcia to ask for help or advice. According to the platform, the man, in this case, took his own life “to have no way out and not qualify for any assistance of any kind”. The PAH states that many of the people who use the Platform “are in a very delicate situation and are very vulnerable,” but insists that suicide “is not the solution.”

More Hotel areas on offer

by Keith Nicol FRANCISCO MORENO, Torrevieja’s Councillor for Town Planning and Environment said at a press conference last Friday 10 May, that new areas have been indentified for Hotel Developments. The new zones have been approved

by Local Government as part of the draft General Plan amendment Number 101, on “Expanded use of building measures for Hotels”.

The Town Planning and Environment Councillor indicated that the change pivots on three aspects which, in essence, are considered necessary to continue the plan that is driven by the government team.

Specifically, the first aspect would amend the occupancy parameter for the Ground Floor in those hotel plots where building height is more of an issue than length. Francisco Moreno indicated that this parameter was changed so that facilities can provide

better services on the ground floor such as lounges, restaurants, gift shops etc The second action is focused on the areas of the MP 52, which was allowed to occupy free space not intended for construction, in the case of hotels, for the implementation of necessary services in tourist towns like Torrevieja.

In short, this is mainly for swimming pools.

The third measure of the Municipal Plan No. 74, is for the added use of adding a Spa area and complementary services, gyms and other appropriate services to hotels.

Briefly, Francisco Moreno has said that “it is brave and resolute measures to consolidate the commitment of the government team to continue growing in hotel infrastructure, this being the time to adapt our policy to achieve the intended purpose.”

These measures make life easier and possibly more profitable for new and established Hotel development.

By Keith Nicol A GROUP of twelve Russian tour operators visited the region last week to discover the delights of the region for themselves.

During their ‘Fam Trip’ they visited Torrevieja, Elche, Alicante, Benidorm and the Orihuela Costa.

The Familiarity Trip was designed to promote Provincial Tourism in order to position the Costa Blanca as a major destination within the Russian marketplace. This initiative, organized by the agency Rushouse Tour, included a visit to different areas and attractions. Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, along with the Deputy of Provincial Tourism, Joaquín Albaladejo, and the Councillor for Tourism, Luis Maria Pizana, welcomed the agents to Torrevieja on the first day of the trip, to introduce the cultural, sports, culinary, landscape and coastline

of the city of Torrevieja to them.

The Deputy of Provincial Tourism indicated that through this proposal which has involved the Costa Blanca Tourist Board, “is to show off all the tourist potential of the province to strengthen the knowledge that Russian citizens have of our product.” During the day the group travelled along the coast of Torrevieja, the Marina Salinas, International marina and the floating museums, the Dolphin Submarine Patrol, the Customs Surveillance Boat Albatros II and the Ciudad Deportiva de Torrevieja. Travel agents that are integrated into the Russian operator Rushouse Tours, come from St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad region, operating with companies such as Corsatour, Vipturs, Aviatour, S-Travel and Novosibirsk, among others.

Court victory

by Jack Troughton BRITISH COUPLE Andrew and Kate Wilford have won their court battle against a crooked property developer who stole their life savings.

They were in the process of buying an ‘off plan’ dream home in Murcia when in 2008 they discovered fraudster Rafael Aguilera had gained a builder’s mortgage from CAM Bank based on an inflated valuation – despite the property being almost completed.

And they later found out he had sold the home at Trampolin Solera to a third party – leaving the pair, from Colwyn Bay, around 200,000€ out of pocket.

The developer was jailed for a year – the term will be suspended if he repays Andrew and Kate 175,000€ plus their costs, expected to take the total to between 250,000€ and 300,000€.

Andrew told RTN that Judge Teresa Rizo Jimenez in her sentencing described the offence as “a deliberate and premeditated fraud” and described it as a clear criminal matter – dismissing Aguilera’s claim it should be before civil courts. “Naturally I am very pleased that the judge has found in our favour but sadly the matter is not yet over. Aguilera still has the opportunity to appeal so that could delay the celebrations,” he said. “And I am told by my solicitor that he will appeal.”

FRAUD He said Aguilera faced a further 1,050 similar cases of mortgage fraud relating to both Trampolin Solera properties and buildings on a sister development near the city of Murcia, Trampolin Hills. And he estimated they involved something like 184 million Euros so there was a big question as to where the money had gone

and he suspected a ‘Mr Big’ was involved.

Andrew said these actions would be heard together in Madrid. “I suppose the danger is he might just think it is better to be hung for a sheep than a lamb and lodge his appeal.”

He added: “I certainly feel more comfortable now there has been a sentence but I am not totally at ease yet – that will come when our money is in the bank.”

However, Andrew hopes their case will give hope to other property victims who have been defrauded in Spain and encourage them to seek redress through the courts – despite the wheels of justice turning slowly.

FIGHT “What this success should do is act as an encouragement to all those who find themselves in a similar situation with ‘corrupt’ develop-

ers, not to be frightened and to continue the fight to the end,” he said.

“For me the end will come when I have been repaid the nigh on 300,000€ he owes me under the terms of this judgement for the principal sum plus interest and costs. “I would advise any other property victims to stick with it and fight to the end – in my case an awful lot of people would have given up by now but I carried on and will see it through until the end.”

Earlier this month Andrew wrote a “snotty letter” to the Ministry of Justice complaining of the delay in getting a judgement in a case heard in February. He said it appeared “a hell of a coincidence” the sentence was announced so quickly afterwards when he was warned it could take up to nine months after the trial.

“This is certainly another positive step along the road to justice and a final outcome.”

AVE bus link to Benidorm row continues to boil

THE MAYORESS of Alicante, Sonia Castedo, was embroiled in a heated exchange with Hosbec President, Antonio Mayor and representatives of ADIF last Wednesday over the issue of whether a direct bus link to Benidorm with reserved shuttle spaces from the new AVE station in Alicante will become a reality. Castedo has been heavily criticised for her ‘blinkered attitude’ over the Benidorm link.

Castedo maintains that Alicante will provide adequate public transport lines to serve the resort and accuses Benidorm of taking a “high-handed” approach and interfering in Alicante’s public transport network: “No one is coming to tell us how to do or undo the city’s public transport,” she said, “…regular lines arrive at the bus station and there is nothing more to say.” Benidorm’s Councillor for Tourism Gema Amor called Castedo’s remarks “…an outrage and an absurdity,” adding “The AVE is for the entire province, not only for the capital.” Castedo has since moderated her attitude somewhat and agreed to enter into negotiations with Renfe and the Consell to achieve a compromise.

Scam warning

THOUGHT YOU may like to warn businesses - and perhaps your advertisers - of a scam that has been going on for some years that I have never seen covered in the press.

A gentleman came into my shop whilst I was busy serving customers and advised me that he had to check the fire extinguisher which was up for renewal. I asked for identification which he produced but it was in a different name to the usual one. When I queried this he advise me previous company had ceased trading.

Whilst I was talking to him and also serving customers his accomplice came in and took the fire extinguisher, bringing back a new one. I was then charged 18€.

When they had gone and I had finished with customers I looked at the factura and noted no NIF number on it. The company name was ‘Expain Extincion’ - his name ‘Frank Gomez’.

When I got home I looked up the company name only to find a list of companies he had scammed. Pat Davis

A mushy political correct world IT HAS been a few weeks since Margaret Thatcher passed away and I wanted to comment on her life as our PM for so many years. As a teenager growing up in the north of England I recall her battle with Arthur Scargill and the Labour Unions. Often I picture her as a caricature several months pregnant and the words ‘Labour Pains’ written on her protruding tummy. She was a person whom it seems people loved or hated. I found it quite amazing that at her funeral she had requested portions from the Bible to be read. In today’s mushy political correct world, I cannot imagine any of our present politicians having the courage nor the convictions to do that for fear of offending someone.

Ill-conceived plan

REFERRING TO the letter by Mr Graham Robinson I would like to point out that the “ill-conceived plan” regarding the green waste collection is not new but has been published since last year: the municipal law has existed since 2008.

The town hall is still collecting what is dumped around by many people, making a big effort to keep the area clean.

Large amounts, such as from communities, are supposed to be deposited by the gardeners directly in Lomas de Cabo Roig at the containers. Small individual amounts are collected, but in order to be able to reduce the cost and organise the lorries better, Orihuela Costa has been divided into three zones and citizens are asked to call 96 676 0000 (when the Spanish voice starts, dial ext. 29) to ask for collection: this can be done in Spanish, English, German and French. You can also email costa@orihuela.es In this way citizens are told when to put out garden waste to avoid it lying around for 4-5 days, flying around, or inviting others to just dump something on top. When ordinary waste or building waste is dumped on the green waste, this is not considered green waste anymore, creating a far higher cost.

The same procedure applies for the collection of furniture etc., so there is no need to dump an old sofa or kitchen sink at night time somewhere…!

IN A poll taken by Gallup entitled “Where would you most like to move?”(Time International Magazine,April 8/2013), “Gallup surveyed more than 500,000 people in 154 countries and projected that 13% of the world´s adults, or 630 million people, would permanently relocate if given the chance.

Here are their top destinations: 1. USA: 138 million 2. UK: 42 million 3. Canada: 37 million 4. France: 31 million 5. Saudi Arabia: 29 million

The first four may make some sense,

but I have an idea not that many women were polled if Saudi Arabia came out a hefty 5th in the ranking. Or maybe I’m wrong and that country’s treatment of its female citizens has improved dramatically lately. Do any readers have more information on this?

survive full term. Instead, surgeons successfully performed the first operation of its kind, reaching the larynx with a fetoscope. Surgeon Eduard Gratacós said: “It was like working with a patient made of butter because the thickness of the trachea of a fetus is like a cigarette paper.” The intricate surgery enabled Maria to continue with her pregnancy: Baby Gonzalo, now ten months old and a picture of good health, is so cute and oh so lucky.

RETURNING HOME from helping the Avinenca ‘Save the Olive Grove’ project group in Bean, an area of abandoned agricultural land outside Beniarbeig, gardening author Dick Handscombe tried to avoid a dog and caused his car to be a write off: no other car was involved.

Amazingly, while hanging upside down, Dick was able to loosen his seat belt and slide through the pile of debris and broken glass in the car to escape through the boot hatch that had been forced open.

Dick emerged from the accident without injury, other than being shaken up. Luckily Clodagh, living in Javea for the past two years, was not in the car as anyone in the passenger seat

Some of the residents were elderly or disabled and needed to be carried from the scene in the dark over difficult terrain. The policemen ensured they were taken to safety at the local Sports Centre despite suffering from smoke inhalation themselves. One of the policemen suffered a foot injury. The three officers were delighted that their efforts had been recognised but concurred it was “…all in the line of duty.”

Saving money on schoolbook exchange

by Keith Nicol EVERY PARENT dreads the start of the new school year and the additional payments required for new schoolbooks. It’s especially frustrating when thousands of books, in near perfect condition, are given or thrown away, by students who move up to the next year.

Although school book exchange schemes have been part of school life in other parts of Europe for decades, it’s a concept that has been slow to catch on in Spain. But that may all be about to change. Affordable schoolbooks. That is the aim of the project ‘Tus Libros Valen Dinero’, that has started for Secondary Schools (Institutos) in the Veja Baja. A project to realize a regional exchange of used schoolbooks.

Schoolbooks are not luxury items, but simply needed to provide our children with a good future. Bearing in mind the current economic situation including the lack of the subsidy, the annual purchase of new schoolbooks for an average amount of 350€ is for more and more households exorbitant attack on the budget.

‘Tus Libros Valen Dinero’ has informed most Secondary schools and/or Parents Councils in the area of Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura and Orihuela about setting up an

exchange program.. A strong point is that the exchange of schoolbooks is not only possible between students from the same school but also between different schools in the Veja Baja. Even books not in use anymore in one of the schools school can be of value for students in another school.

How does it work? At ‘Tus Libros Valen Dinero’ students can hand in their schoolbooks from last year and order at the same time the schoolbooks for the coming year. Books are graded into A and B quality, which will be reflected in the price. For submitting a book students receive an average of 10€ and for purchasing they pay an average of 12.50€ for each book.

On the website of ‘Tus Libros Valen Dinero’ students can already fill in a form for the books they want to sell and order. The sooner the form is sent, the more likely it is that books can be sold and found. Payment takes place when books are sold.

To clarify an example: Maria goes in September from ESO 1 to ESO 2. She can hand in 10 ‘ESO 1’ books. For this she receives an amount of 100€. At the same time she ordered 11 books for ESO 2. The cost of the order is 137.50€. In total, Maria needs only pay 37.50€ to get all the schoolbooks for the new school year.

The more students that participate in the project, the more books can be exchanged, the more families can benefit from affordable books. The project of ‘Tus Libros Valen Dinero’ is based on 20 Insitutos in the Veja Baja area. However, participation is open for

every student of every Secondary school.

San Javier not closing but growing!

FAR FROM San Javier airport fearing closure from Corvera, the new director of San Javier plans to open new routes in Galicia and Asturias!

by Keith Nicol The Spaniard Pedro Vicente Gallut is also working on recovering connections with Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, in addition to seeking companies in the countries of Eastern and Northern Europe to ensure that they receive large aircraft The new director of the airport of San Javier, Pedro Vicente Gallut, replaced Paul Lazarus in April as the Director of the airport, and this week held an informal meeting with the media without cameras or microphones, which avoided any comment on the Corvera airport promoted by the Autonomous Region. He did not rule out competition that could lead to a new airport San Javier or negotiations between the regional airport and Aena. When asked about a possible closure he replied, “While you’re operating, I will work for San Javier.” He did admit that the future expectations of Corvera had generated “concern among San Javier” that subsided when Aena pledged to move personnel in case of a signed agreement.

The new director of San Javier, born in Santiago de la Ribera in 1969, spent 23 years

working at the airport and headed the department of Operations since 1996. As a home worker, he knows the situation and is not content with the only national flights being Air Nostrum to Madrid. He aims to restore Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, as well as capturing companies willing to fly to Galicia and Asturias. He also relies on getting new routes with Eastern and Northern Europe and considers that San Javier is ready to receive large aircraft and not give up open new routes to Russia. Its purpose “is to consolidate the current traffic, attract new companies and diversify routes and sources of income.” In his view, in this work include “the department’s efforts Aena Marketing” and the official backing.

Six Million more needed to open Corvera

THE CORVERA consortium says that they need six million euros to open the airport. They have requested financial support from the Community, which owns the airport, to put a portion of the funds forward as a loan, which then would be returned. The other part of the money would be assumed by the consortium. The consortium has informed the community that is willing to give, “a significant portion” of profits to them once the airport is viable and opened for business.

The concession for the airport was granted back in 2007 but sources indicate that the dealership cannot keep putting money indefinitely into the pot, while waiting to hear about the opening schedule for the facility.

The first proposal was made by the airport concession in July last year and was rejected by the Ministry of Public Works. They then filed a motion for reconsideration, which was also rejected last March. Employers emphasize that rebalancing not only what they ask, but also forced the creditor banks request.

The business group believes that it has been forced to go to court after exhausting administrative delays by the refusal of the Ministry of Public Works to rebalance the concession contract. They consider they have the right to adjust the terms of the contract to ensure the viability of the airport.

Alarms went off in July last year, when there was a cut the funding line because of the delay of authorizations for opening, which surpassed the deadline provided for, in the credit agreement. The concession called on banks for temporary suspension of obligations to prevent ‘default’ on their credit, but lenders put on more conditions: extend the deadline for commissioning a more realistic date (proposed on September 28 this year) plus the decommissioning of commercial operations in San Javier. This situation was raised again on January 16 this year to the Ministry of Public Works to make the project viable and have the necessary financial support for the opening of Corvera. The story continues.

Learning English in Dublin

By Keith Nicol MURCIA HAS opened its application process for those students who would like to visit Ireland this summer to study English.

The Department of Sport, Youth and Tourism offers 100 seats in the language travel program for youth of the town to learn English in Ireland. The price is 1,450€ per person and includes the course, travel, accommodation and meals.

The classes are held in Dublin and there are two schedules, from 10th to 31st July and from 3rd to August 24th, both with 50 places. Students will receive 60 lessons during their stay. They will also have excursions and leisure activities plus free time. Accommodation is with residents and families, to allow for a full integration within the program and to maintain permanent links with monitors and all groups.

Participation in these linguistic holidays are open to all young people born between 1988 and 1998, who are registered in the municipality before 1st May this year.

Each participant may only choose one time table. The registration period is open now and ends on May 24th. Registration takes place in the City Council Youth Service, from Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 2.00pm, and Wednesday from 5.0pm0 to 7.00pm.

Applications must submit their original identity card and photocopies. The regulations and the registration form are available on ‘www.informajoven.org’. Priority will be given to applicants who have not enjoyed any stay in the three previous years. If the number of applicants exceeds 100, places will be allocated through a draw.

Boston spirit shines through

by Jack Troughton A SURPRISE birthday present landed a Costa Blanca couple in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings and in the middle of the manhunt across the Massachusetts city.

Carl Barclay and partner Sara landed in the United States two days after the terrorists struck on 15th April, near the finishing line of race killing three people and injuring 264.

In a gun battle, terror suspect Tamerlan Tsamaev was shot dead and brother Dzhokhar was injured but escaped. In the resulting ‘lockdown’ of the city, the wounded man was finally caught hiding in a boat in Watertown.

Locksmith Carl, who had left his family business in Javea in the safe hands of his brother, said they were forced to change hotels because their original choice was “part of the crime scene.”

Moved to the Hotel Revere, he told RTN: “We were there for the whole siege, the lockdown of the city and the manhunt.

“The people of Boston were fantastic – they were surprised we had continued our journey and then made us fantastically welcome – a police officer let me sit on his Harley Davidson and put his helmet on.

“But it was quite surreal. The city was empty, a ghost town. It seemed the only

people on the streets were the homeless – it was like being on a film set.”

SWAT TEAMS He added: “We were seeing helicopters, SWAT teams, military units, and FBI agents on every street corner from the hotel.”

He said thousands of people filled the streets after the emergency and held a minute’s silence. “It was very emotional, suddenly there were people everywhere.”

Carl said Boston’s streets were also filled with posters reading ‘Boston Be Strong’ and ‘Boston: We Stand Strong.”

And he said they also witnessed people and athletes going to barriers around the

Everything ready for Audiovisual Torrevieja

By Keith Nicol AUDIOVISUAL TORREVIEJA is quickly becoming one of the bext known short film festivals in Spain. In just three years, the national competition of short films “Audiovisual Torrevieja” has exceeded expectations and this year’s edition received 526 entries in 27 days.

Such has been the success of the competition that the organizers have been forced to reject short films from Germany, France, Netherlands, England, Colombia, Peru, Mexico and the United States from filmmakers who have chosen Torrevieja’s Festival as a means to distribute their works in Spain although the festival has not yet had an international section!

The festival will take place next week on Thursday 23, Friday 24 and Saturday May 25, in the Auditorium of Centro Cultural Virgen del Carmen, Torrevieja with projection of all of the finalist’s films in both categories, from 9.30pm.

This year the jury is composed of media professionals and the winners of the previous editions. They include art director Edou Hydallgo, actor Chuck Torres, a former elite athlete in American Football with the ‘Barcelona Dragons’ known internationally as “Janino” he has been seen in commercials for brands such as Nike, and currently is waiting for the release his latest film “Alpha”

The Director and Writer Victor Carrey has won over eighty awards around the world. He is a Professional Director of advertising and plays an important role as music director. He is currently in pre-production for his first feature. Abdelatif Hwidar is another writer, director and actor who in 2008 won the Goya for best short fiction for “Salvador, story of a daily miracle” with which has garnered over 30 national and international awards. In 2011 he received the Award for Arts and Culture in his hometown, Ceuta. As an actor he has worked in different Spanish series and movies getting the “Ondas Award 2011” for his work on the miniseries “11-M”. He has also participated in several documentary and fiction projects as “Essaouira: Reinventing Tradition” and the feature film director Ignacio Monkey Estrela as co-writer and actor.

The story of the real Wild Thornberries will be on sale soon in Javea!

FOR THOSE who asked, Roger Crathorne is Land Rover’s longest employee; and that’s why he was pictured sitting (and smiling proudly) in Huey the Land Rover in last week’s WIB. If you remember it was all about the Land Rover’s 65th Anniversary. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the whole of the caption under the picture. Phew, mystery over… Sorry, Roger. Anyhow folks, that article prompted RTN reader David McMullan’s own memories of the dear old Land Rover - and his involve “an amazing family expedition across Africa.”

Back in the mists of time when my daughter was a schoolgirl we used to enjoy watching the cartoon show The Wild Thornberries. This series was about the exploits of a pair of scientists, a husband and wife team and their children, as they traversed Africa in a Land Rover getting into all sorts of scrapes. Well, believe me they had nothing on David and his family who were Wild Thornberry-ing long before that cartoon ever aired.

To cross the Sahara back in the early 70s, with three young children and without being part of a convoy may seem foolhardy but that’s just what David, his wife Maureen and friend Susan Cole did. This is long before mobile phones, sat-nav and lap tops, so I’m guessing you had to pretty good with a map. They did, of course, have a faithful Land Rover and this was rigged extensively for the trip. David says, “Before we set off the Land Rover was rebuilt at my factory, Crayfords in Kent.” He chuckles, “It’s still in Kenya (if you’re

ever out there look for the number-plate NTA 470M) and it’s still running!” I bet John Edwards, Land Rover’s global brand director, would love to have heard of that, eh David?

Well, I’ll let you into a bit of secret because pretty soon he probably will. You see, next month the story of the expedition will be available for all to read when David publishes his late wife’s memoirs. It’s a new book called ‘Show Me A Mountain’ and details the adventures of a ten thousand mile journey that started in Kent and ended on the edge of the Indian Ocean. As the back cover states: “To uproot an entire family and take it through such an experience required a leader with truly special qualities. Dr Maureen McMullan certainly had those qualities.”

David tells me that their travels “across the Sahara and into the Congo… made the front pages of British newspapers at the time.” I guess it’s time now to make the pages of the Spanish papers too as David will be launching Maureen’s book on Saturday June 15th at the Oasis Centre in Javea. He says the book will be on display there and he’ll gladly sign purchased copies “on Maureen’s behalf.”

David is a long time resident of Javea, as was Maureen. Maybe we could get RTN’s Danny Collins to do a book review of ‘Show Me a Mountain’ - it surely makes exciting reading. Or maybe the BBC will re-make the cartoon Wild Thornberries as the Wild McMullans.

The weekly Bay Radio show has been produced and presented by the local entertainer and singer every weekend and lovers of pop music tune in to hear the very best of the sounds of the sixties and seventies.

John has been broadcasting his particular brand of retro music on the Costa Blanca for many years but is particularly proud of the milestone Ready Steady Sunday has reached.

“As a lover and, indeed, purveyor of songs from the greatest era of pop music I have always felt there would be a radio audience out there wanting to hear the great music from those times when we were all a lot younger,” he told RTN. Summer sunflowers by

Clodagh & Dick Handscombe Holistic gardeners and authors gardening in Spain for 25 years

SUNFLOWERS (HELIANTHUS) are majestic summer flowers that do especially well in Spain in reasonable soil if one remembers to water them. The large, single-headed yellow flowers on stems up to two or three metres high that look like a summer sun may be grown as a specimen by a child in a small patch, pot or school garden - the stimulus to many for the start of a lifetime interest in gardening.

Such tall plants are not always easy to fit into a balanced garden layout. However, there are now an amazing number of varieties available from dwarf varieties to the Russian Giants from Siberia.

They can give valuable displays of colour and interest throughout the summer and early autumn, and with luck, beyond... We even had self seeded plants flower during February in the middle of our vegetable plot, having survived many nights below zero…

BENEFITS OF GROWING SUNFLOWERS They are relatively easy to grow.

They make a wonderful display whether you grow a block of tall varieties in the vegetable garden, medium height varieties mixed in a perennial /shrub bed or dwarf varieties grown in flower pots.

Long-lasting cut flowers for the naya or house.

The flower heads attract beneficial insects.

Supports for climbing beans in the vegetable garden: or why not at the back of a flower bed?

A natural windbreak for lower-growing vegetables or annuals…

Seed heads can be separated and sun-dried to provide seeds as an alternative to nuts or olives with an evening drink, adding to breakfast cereals or fruit, or crushing to extract sunflower oil if you have sufficient. But make sure you eat them before the oil

content turns rancid.

Seed heads left on the plant to dry can be cut off with a short stem and then tied to a suitable branch of a tree in the garden to attract and feed birds during the winter. Loose seeds can also be added to the bird table or the food for many cage and aviary birds.

As a sprouting seed – soak seeds overnight. Cut the base out of a 5 litre water bottle, about 8cm deep. Fill with 50/50 soil and compost, dampen, lay seeds on top and cover with damp newspaper. Put in a sunny corner, but remember to keep the paper moist but not soaking. As soon as the seeds start to sprout remove the paper but continue to keep the soil moist. In a couple of days you will have green shoots two centimetres high which you can cut off and add to salads for their flavour and high mineral content.

A good ‘first seed’ for a children’s corner…

Some years ago, famous 16th Century herbalist (name escapes us) found that sunflower buds boiled and eaten like globe artichokes with butter, vinegar and pepper exceeded the taste of artichokes - as well as stimulating a bodily lust. Something to try this summer, but with olive oil!

VARIETIES TO CHOOSE FROM As already mentioned, sunflowers now come in a wide variety of heights, leaf forms, single or multi headed branches of flowers, and most importantly, colours. Yellow, red, orange, bronze and cream varieties are now available in single or mixed hues.

Unfortunately few seed shops and catalogues stock more than a few common varieties. For variety we have purchased seed for many years from the mail order catalogue of Chiltern Seeds, www.chilternseeds.co.uk which has had up to 30 varieties.

The following selection gives a feel for the range of sunflowers available: Dwarf: 30 to 45cms: Pavino: Can grow well even in a 10cm pot: Develops a number of branches with a continuing display of 10cm. flowers.

It is obviously possible to achieve a breath-taking display.

PLANTING SEEDS Plant singly in plant pots for planting out when 15cms high or growing dwarf varieties to maturity. One can also plant seeds direct but inevitably one loses a few seeds to hungry mice and snails: plant in a rich, water-retaining seed compost or garden soil.

CARE OF SUNFLOWER PLANTS Although established plants can survive in poor soil this is only where there is deep soil that the tap root can explore searching for water. In most soils it is best to water and feed regularly to achieve maximum heights, number and size of flowers and seed heads. Apart from a little leaf rust sunflowers give little problem provided you establish strong young plants.

Don’t over-water seedlings as they can rot off. They do not like marshy conditions.

Sunflowers do best in full sun but will tolerate semi shade.

Some interesting facts about tax ‘INTERESTING’ AND ‘tax’ don’t often pop up in the same sentence. I can think of many other Suzanne adjectives that are closely associated with the word ‘tax’ but ‘interesting’ isn’t one of them. by

MOST OF us recognise the fact that there is a cost to running a country that must be met by one means or another. There the agreement usually ends. After that most people will debate and disagree about what should be taxed and by how much, with views tending to depend on the impact to your pocket.

So, tax might not be particularly interesting but the different ways in which countries decide to spread their tax burden might interest us a little bit more.

‘Taxation Trends in the European Union’ is probably not something you would want to read in its entirety.

However, we’ve pulled out one or two thoughtprovoking statistics from this report on tax in the 27 EU countries.

The report identifies the different ways in which countries in Europe spread the tax burden on its citizens. The information is given as a percentage of GDP and relates to 2011. Tax is divided into: Labour – taxes paid on employed labour income Consumption – taxes charged on goods and services Capital – taxes paid on income earned from savings and investments

TAXES OVERALL The statistics show a vast difference between countries. Denmark has the highest overall tax revenue at 47.7% followed by Sweden (44.3%) and Belgium (44.1%). The lowest was in Lithuania (26%) and Bulgaria (27.2%). The UK burden in 2011 was 36.1% with Spain coming in lower still at 31.4% of tax to GDP. CONSUMPTION AND LABOUR TAX Spain has the lowest consumption tax revenue (14%) of all the EU27 countries. In comparison, Sweden is almost double this at 27.3% and the UK comes in at 19.5%.

When it comes to tax on labour, the position is reversed. The UK has the fourth lowest tax rate at 26% and Spain’s rate is 33.2% - still well below Belgium’s top rate of 42.8% TAX ON PERSONAL INCOME The tax on personal income is quite interesting too.

The report compares the highest personal income tax rate between countries across the three years of 2000, 2012 and 2013.

TOP OF THE TAX TABLE IN 2013 Sweden 56.6% Denmark 55.6% Belgium 53.7% Portugal 53% Spain 52% The cheapest place to live if you are a big earner is Bulgaria with a highest income tax of 10%. The UK has a top rate of tax of 45% reduced from 50% in 2012, whilst the overall average amongst the EU27 is 38.7%.

You may or may not have found this interesting. What it does show is that countries across Europe vary enormously on how much it is expected that the state will take. The issue perhaps is not how much is taken but how much better the country is as a result. But that’s another set of tables….

NOT IDENTIFYING the driver of your vehicle in cases of a traffic offence (e.g. speeding) could result in a fine of 900€.

DEAR SIRS, A few weeks ago I received a notice from Trafico stating that my car was traveling at 120 km/h in an area where the speed was limited to 80km/h, and that they opened a fine - penalty procedure. I did not realize that I had been asked to identify the driver and therefor did not. A few days later, I received a letter asking me to pay 900€ for not identifying the driver. What can I do?.

Dear Reader, thank you for your inquiry.

Recently we received a consultation like yours, which has been successfully resolved.

What happens in these cases is that when the Traffic Authorities through a radar placement identify a car driving at excessive speed, as the fine is not served by the agents in the same moment, the vehicle’s owners receive a notice by post communicating the start of penalty proceedings. In this first communication, the vehicle’s owner is informed about the infringement, and he is formally requested to identify who was driving the car.

If the owner does not identify who the driver was, then Traffic

Authorities do not know who the offender was, and cannot fine anyone for speeding. So, Trafico opens a different disciplinary proceeding against the car owner for refusing to identify the driver, which is considered a serious traffic offense under the Road Traffic Act (Article 9 Bis 1), and carries a penalty of € 900.

Recently we were visited by a client who also did not realize that he was asked to identify the driver and was also fined €900. We sent a letter to the Traffic Authorities, confirming that he was unaware of his obligation to identify the driver, and we identified this driver on our application, requesting the authority to archive the penalty process for lack of identification, leaving open just the speeding offence process.

Fortunately, Trafico accepted our petition and sent our client just a penalty for speeding which has been paid within the first 20 days with a discount of 50%, amounting to a total of 150 €, which meant that we had saved € 750.

Therefore, please if you receive a letter, notice, etc. from Trafico, you must read it carefully, make sure what is asked for, and if you are requested to identify the driver at the time of the infringement, do so, or you can face a penalty of € 900.

Beware of cold callers offering financial advice I READ an interesting article in the Daily Mail this week about how hundreds of thousands of pounds is being plundered from pensions every day in Britain.

APPARENTLY THOUSANDS of people across the UK and abroad have fallen foul of cold calling whereby telephone salesmen promise to ‘unlock’ cash from people’s pension funds. These salespeople use high pressure sales techniques to get people interested and usually are operated from ‘boiler rooms’ in the UK, Nigeria or Spain.

According to the Daily Mail: “More than £400m has been handed over to these scams that offer pension holders a tax free lump sum payout with the remaining cash reinvested in high-risk overseas funds.

In the best case scenario victims face being taxed at a rate of up to 55 per cent, as well as other penalties, for withdrawing money before they reach pensionable

age. At worst, they lose almost everything, either through spurious fees or theft as the money is spirited overseas and laundered through webs of companies.”

Det Insp Andy Fyfe, of City of London Police, said the fraudsters are preying on people who are already desperate to raise cash.

Pensions Minister Stephen Webb said: ‘If you are offered a deal to unlock your pension, don’t touch it.’

The reality is you could be falling into a terrible trap which has the potential to destroy your future and your retirement. I have said time and time again you have worked hard for your money so look after it.

I have been cold called on numerous occasions by companies offering financial services and sometimes listen to their prepared script (which can be quite

convincing) but once I ask technical questions or point out I am a financial advisor they always hang up.

My advice would be to think long and hard before agreeing to talk to or meet with anyone who cold calls you regarding your financial affairs.

If they ask for any financial information on the phone, offer you a product that seems to be too good to be true don’t be drawn into their web: just put the phone down.

If they call back tell them to remove your details from their database or else you will notify the police.

Spain is officially insolvent: get your money out while you still can!

THIS WAS the alarming article that was in the Telegraph on 10th May 2013. What the article is basically saying is that at the rate it is going Spain will never be able to repay its debt, the general government gross debt is forecast to rise from 84.1 per cent of GDP last year to 110.6 per cent in 2018.

NO OTHER advanced economy has such a dramatically worsening outlook. And the tragedy of it all is that Spain is actually making relatively good progress in addressing the ‘primary balance’ – that’s the deficit before debt servicing costs. My reply is why doesn´t the European central bank lend money to Spain and other countries at zero interest for at least the next 3 years and write off the interest on current debts to give countries some breathing space.

No that would be too simple for the powers in the

EU; they want all countries indebted to them so they can roll out their fiscal union policies. Europe said that Greece was the first and last such restructuring, but then there was Cyprus and now it looks like Slovenia will follow suit. Spain is holding off further recapitalisation of its banks in anticipation of the arrival of Europe’s banking union, which it hopes will do the job instead. But if the Cypriot precedent is anything to go by, a heavy price will be demanded by way of recompense to those that seek help. Bank creditors will be widely bailed in. Confiscation of deposits looks all too possible in any country, even the UK.

Oh and please don’t think this problem is just a Spanish problem: just look at the debt ratio for the UK, France and many other countries. They are all technically bankrupt, so the best advice is to get your money out of most banks while you can. There are a few banks that are still regarded as safe havens, having never lent money in their entire history and worked solely to safeguard clients’ deposits.

Life The hand of fate AUTHOR NORMAN Reeley examines the tangled web of fate in his new action thriller ‘Malevolent Karma’ as the paths of three young men intertwine as global peace teeters on the brink.

By Jack Troughton THE TRIO were born on the same day, thousands of miles apart, yet they play crucial roles in a story set in 1985, at the height of the Cold War and a year after the Brighton Bombing with international terrorism on the rise.

Norman, who lives in Javea, took two years to write the novel, and has held two book launches – one for his British audience and the other for Spanish readers after his wife Gina translated the work.

Having lived in Spain for 23 year, Malevolent Karma is a first book but he is no stranger to writing. The retired restaurateur has penned a number of online travel articles inspired by travelling the country.

“You write a book for your own interest but of course when it is finished you want people to read it,” said Norman, who is already working on a second book ‘The Vengeance of Karma’.

FATE He said he was fascinated by the idea of fate.

“You turn a corner and get knocked down by a bus but one second later and you don’t.”

Norman’s own life took a change in direction because of chance in his native Scotland. He was going to be an engineer – his father and brothers worked in shipyards on the Clyde. “Father got me an apprenticeship, which was very difficult to secure, but I could not take to it – I felt very guilty at the time because you are born on Clydeside and it’s in your blood.

“I came out of the yard one Friday night. It was raining and dark and I nearly got run over by a bike. It was ridden by a pal of mine from school.

He picked himself up and started talking – he said he was a commi chef and said he worked at the Grand Hotel in Glasgow and was transferring to the Central Hotel and if I wanted he could get me an

interview to take his place.

“He said it was great. You were always warm and there was plenty to eat and all the guys in the kitchen were great fun to work with. I went for the interview and got the job.”

Norman added: “But father gave me a good hiding because he had to go and do all the handshakes in reverse and make all the apologies. It even upset the apprentice programme.

But that is what you call fate and it completely changed my life.”

ADULT He said he also wanted to look at how youngsters became terrorists after being recruited by cynical adults.

“You see all these acts of terrorism going on but no one is born a terrorist, so what actually makes a decent young boy become a terrorist?” asked Norman. “That is not karma or fate, which becomes manipulation.”

He said he had chosen not to write about his own experiences in Malevolent Karma, although Loch Lomond plays an important role, where he once owned a restaurant.

“It is like the films Crash and Babel, there are multi-characters who are seemingly unconnected but very much linked,” he said. “To get the point I am trying to make, you have to read right through from the prologue to the epilogue.”

Label and List: the mantra for moving house WITH A quiet Sunday morning on my hands I decided to go through the ritualistic switching of winter to summer clothes. Because we are fortunate enough to live in such an ambient climate the chore is not as great as it might be. Nevertheless there are jackets and sweaters to put away and, thankfully, shoes with toes in can go out of sight until the rainy season.

As I folded (very roughly I might add) the clothes that won’t see daylight for several wonderful months, it did occur to me that in the fifteen years since I arrived in Moraira, the seasons have definitely changed. I know that in 1998 most of what I wore would work for most of the year, perhaps layering up on cooler days and evenings.

One thought led to another and my mind meandered through the almost thirty international moves my family has made. So much packing; so many huge shipments across oceans; weeks of unpacking at the new destination… I looked at the linens and diaphanous summer tops that needed a quick wash, or worse – ironing - and my stomach lurched. Sitting on the bed I wondered how many times I have moved house only to arrive in a lovely new home and surprise myself with some of the ridiculous decisions I had made.

By Dave Gaskell – realbenidorm.net A VISIT to Benidorm can be so much more than simply sun, sea and Sangria. Of course there is plenty of the aforementioned in abundance.

However, take a look around you and for those who like to discover a little local history whilst also keeping fit there is plenty to keep you occupied as a Benidorm weekender visitor.

A short Bus journey (No.3) from Park Elx (Bus Stop in front of Hotel Mar Blau) by the harbour will take you to the lovely bay of Cala de Finestrat, where high above the bay is a gem of walk up to the watchtower of Agulió on the peak of the hill. You cannot miss it! Part of the old coastal defences since the XVI

century built to look out for invaders and latterly as part of a series of towers looking out for Smugglers avoiding payment of taxes to customs.

The walk is easy to medium difficulty and is best reached by taking the road to the far left (with your back to the beach) from where there is a newly laid path to the tower. With a few stops on the way to take in the stunning scenery or sit and enjoy a drink at one of the picnic tables, the walk should take just 25 minutes from the beach.

Once on the peak you can see almost a ¼ of the entire Land of Valencia toward Benidorm and Calpe in the north to Alicante and Villajoyosa in the south.

This is one of the best kept secrets in

the area with rarely another soul sharing the views and tranquillity with you. The phrase “Breath Taking” often misused by holiday brochures really does seem apt here, the scenery and views truly are breath taking. This is a perfect location to see the sunrise or the sunset.

For those who prefer a more vigorous walk, from the tower it is possible to continue the path too Villajoyosa and back, a very pleasant circuit of two and a half hours at a stroll. This is well signposted along the route and is known as the “Colada de la Costa”. Later head back to Benidorm for a much deserved evening meal and drinks on the terraces with plenty of time to contemplate your next Benidorm weekender.

Nisperos in Benidorm

THE NISPERO season is at its height and local residents are knee deep in the soft and delicious fruit that is harvested in profusion at this time of the year. Nisperos can be made into a sticky liquer, jam (although it can be tricky to set) or lightly stewed and served with ice cream but Benidorm housewife Mrs Jane Peake serves it in a delightful crumble! Peel 1 kilo of Nisperos, discarding the stones and inner membrane and lay them in the bottom of a greased oven-proof dessert dish. Make the ‘crumble’ by rubbing together 300g plain flour with 200g butter sweetened with 175g golden caster sugar. Sprinkle over the fruit and bake at 170ºC for 40 minutes. Nicest with homemade vanilla ice cream or custard. Nobody ever got slim by spending the summer in Benidorm!

Benidorm BASE Jumping Championships FOR ANY extreme sport enthusiasts, the 6th annual BASE jumping championships are due to take place in Benidorm on the weekend of 8th & 9th June.

By Irena Bodnarec, BenidormAllYearRound.com BASE JUMPING is an extreme sport where participants jump from a fixed object – and in this case it happens to be off the top of the Gran Hotel Bali in La Cala, which stands at 160 metres!

To emphasise the dangers, last year a contestant landed on the glass roof of the hotel restaurant and badly injured himself after being blown off course by a freak gust of wind – he thankfully made a full recovery.

There is certainly no margin for error in this activity – once airbound they only have 15 seconds to deploy their parachute. Adrenaline junkies love the danger involved and in reality, you even need a nerve of steel to watch them. They have a very small target mat to land on and it is not unheard of that some of the jumpers end up in the swimming pool – much to the surprise of the hotel guests who are enjoying a leisurely swim at the time!

So mark the date in your diary and don´t forget to bring your camera for some once in a lifetime picture opportunities.

Benidorm Playas Volleyball Team to play in the Championships

THE PLAYAS de Benidorm volleyball team took part in the regional finals this weekend at the Centre for Modernisation in Alicante against Santo Domingo de Elda, La Nucia and Elche. Trained by Daniel Garcia, the Playas beat La Nucia 3-0 in the second game, lost in the tie-break 3-2 against Elche and came back to win 3-0 against Elda. The Ilicitanas were proclaimed champions and runners up were the Playas, so both teams will be in the Championship final to be held later this month in Barcelona.

Program faulty following computer virus HELLO AUNTY: Having fallen victim to that UKASH virus and had to wipe my laptop and reload windows 7, I now have a problem with a program which worked perfectly before the virus. I use free ‘sound recorder v 9.6.1’ and have in the past been able to record without any background noise from other sources, whilst using headphones to supervise what was happening, but now I find that the only way to record is through the DELL laptop’s speakers, so no headphones, the sound then being recorded through the laptop microphone, and thereby catching background noise.

Can you help me as I will soon be bald! Exasperated of Gandia Aunty says: It may be that you do not have all the correct drivers installed, and so the device is not available.

According to http://www.freesoundrecorder.net/ vistaproblem/ you need to activate the stereo mixer in the sound options of your control panel. It may not be in the list of options, so you have to ‘Show Disabled Devices’ from the menu. Then configure ‘stereo mixer’ and freesoundrecorder for your requirements.

Response: I have tried the remedy you suggested and I realised that there had been a DELL utilities disk supplied at the time of purchase, and that the re installer may not have reloaded it. I now find that the software needed to get me back to pre virus operation has been reinstalled, and the system works perfectly.

Typing trouble DEAR AUNTY: I am having a problem with programmes where I type text, e.g. Apache Open Office and ‘Compose’ in Firefox Gmail. The insert cursor, normally at the end of current text, suddenly jumps randomly back into the previous text.

As I am not a touch typist and look at the keyboard as I type, this can involve whole sentences having to be cut and pasted. I have tried uninstalling and re installing Open Office, but it makes no difference. Is it my operating system, Windows 7, at fault do you think? Any help would be much appreciated. Les Power Aunty says: The cursor moving around could be down to an issue with a software driver for your mouse / touchpad. Or it could be your keyboard configuration means that certain keys you press are allocated to do another action – e.g. if number lock is not ‘lit’, then the numbers on the keypad move the cursor instead of putting numbers.

Internet error message HI AUNTY: I have a VAIO laptop.

Each time I open the internet I get the message ‘Internet has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.

Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available’. I click on ‘close program’ and the internet comes up. Do you know what the problem is and how I can rectify it? Jacqui

This may be down to: The browser not being installed correctly - reinstall the browser or use another such as Chrome or Firefox. A ‘third party’ toolbar or ‘addon’ is not installed correctly or crashing - uninstall toolbars that you may not need - or an addon like Adobe Flash is not installed in the browser, and the pages you are trying to view need this to work.

Abba not havin’ a good time RUMOURS WERE going around last week that there was a chance Abba might get back together again, and like me perhaps you held your breath waiting for news of what would be a momentous event in the world of popular music. But being the nasty old spoilsport that I am, I have to inform you that it seems its never going to happen.

Björn Ulvaeus, the one who played guitar and smiled a lot, said last Thursday “I promise you, Abba will never reform ... when you listen to our music, you have an image of four young energetic people and not four geriatrics,” that pretty much puts the rumour to bed for me ... Big Time! But there is a wee drop more to be telling you about.

feeling when we were weary with our heavy schedule ... little niggles, differences of opinion when we were a little irritated and ... “ aha! ... so we were all right then, they were rivals!

Benny Andersson, the bearded one at the piano kept a pretty low profile during this whole thing which gets me to thinking he was pretty keen on the reunion, but alas the potential for the two girls to scratch each others eyes out seems to have won the day.

So you will just have to do what you always do and dust down your old CD’s and get singing along with your fave track whilst doing your spring cleaning.

FROM THE moment a young girl walks onto a stage in a school play, the chances are, given the opportunity to become Cinderella, she would bite your proverbial hand off. This very pipe dream has come true for a young lady who got her big break in series three of Downton Abbey playing the part of Lady Rose McClare, cousin and ward of the Granthams.

Kenneth Branagh confirmed last week that 24 year old Lily James will indeed play Cinderella in his upcoming movie adaptation of the classic fairytale. The film will feature both live and action sequences, and the relatively inexperienced Lily beat off the likes of Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan and Bella Heathcote to the part. Its a bold move by Branagh, but with his level of experience you have to think Lily is ready to step up to the plate. She was born in Esher in Surrey, and eventually made her way to Tring in Hertfordshire to the Arts Education School, and you can only imagine how excited and pleased everyone there is now that Lily has landed such a dream role. The multi nominated and award winning Cate Blanchett will play the evil stepmother, and Game of Thrones hunk Richard Madden is in talks to play Prince Charming, suggesting the young Lily James could well have to pinch herself every day from when the shooting begins, which, by the way is later this year. Cinderella is due for release early next year when we can all witness a true fairytale unfolding in every sense of the word.

Harry the Bakers Boy

ON THURSDAY August 29th a film will go on general release in UK cinemas called ‘This is Us 3D,’ and is a documentary style account of the rise of boy band One Direction.

One of the featured items in the movie came to light last week and is rather a cute wee story of pretty boy and serial ladies man Harry Styles returning to the first job he had in home town Holmes Chapel in Cheshire.

Harry boy began his working life as a bakers boy and earned £6 an hour as a 14-year-old working on Saturdays, serving in the shop, cleaning the back, scrubbing the floor, washing the trays and cleaning the counter. Harry boy had a bit of fun for the cameras when he tucked into pasties and did some of his old chores during the filming, to which his old boss Simon Wakefield retorted “He was the most polite member of staff we’ve ever had, customers really took a shine to him, and the shop suddenly had an influx of girls when Harry worked here.”... so nothing much has changed then eh?

Life recipe

Chicken and mushroom risotto LUSCIOUS, CREAMY risotto is one of my favourite dishes. It takes a little care and attention to get it right, but it’s not that difficult and the time spent is well worthwhile. Ideally you should use Italian arborio rice, but in this version I used a Spanish paella rice. The main thing is to use a good short grain rice; long grain rice just won’t work in risotto.

The key to success is the proportion of stock to rice – roughly 3 parts stock to 1 part rice and to add the warm stock a little at a time.

• 400g mushrooms, quartered • 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped • 25g butter • 4 fat garlic cloves, peeled and chopped • Freshly ground black pepper • 2 chicken legs or 4 thighs, de-boned and the meat cut into bite sized chunks • Olive oil for frying • 2 tsps fresh thyme leaves • 2 mugs short grain rice • A glass of dry white wine • 6 mugs warm chicken stock • 50g fresh parmesan cheese, shaved or coarsely grated 1. Melt the butter in a large frying pan and gently fry the onion for 2-3 minutes. Add the mushrooms, garlic and plenty of pepper and continue to fry for 5-6 minutes until the mushrooms have taken on a little

colour. Set aside on a plate.

2. Add a little oil to the pan and fry the chicken pieces over medium heat for 5-6 minutes until they are brown and sticky. Set aside with the mushrooms.

3. Add a little more oil to the pan and heat with the rice for 1-2 minutes until it becomes slightly translucent. Add the wine and continue to heat and stir until it has virtually evaporated. Now it is time to add the stock - one mugful at a time - stirring constantly so that it is gradually absorbed by the rice. After

about 10 minutes, add the chicken and mushrooms as well as the thyme leaves.

Continue to stir and add the stock for a further 5 - 10 minutes until the mixture becomes soft and creamy, but the rice still has a little crunch. It is now ready to serve.

4. Spoon the risotto onto warmed serving plates and sprinkle the parmesan cheese over the top.

Serves: 4 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes

The Big Band Sound: alive and well on the Costa Blanca

THE 16 piece ‘Miller Men Big Band’ under the direction of Alan Skelton were on top form again at the second of their spring shows at the Rosales Restaurant on the Lemon Tree Rd, Guardamar on 4th May. The show opened with George Gershwin’s ‘Strike up the Band’ and it certainly did! A broad range of classic big band hits included Glenn Miller’s ‘American Patrol’ ‘Perfidia’ and ‘Chatternooga Choo Choo’, all receiving delighted applause.

The highlight of the evening was the band’s rendition of ‘East of the Sun’ with four members of the trombone section playing on top form.

For a great night’s musical entertainment watch out for details of their next concert on 15th June, once again at The Rosales Restaurant on the Lemon Tree Road Guardamar.

OVER THE last few years we have seen the cost of car hire rocket by nearly 25% compared to previous years. Even taking into consideration that prices rise due to inflation such a large increase in a comparatively short period of time has not been good news for British Expats on the Costa Blanca.

VISITS TO the UK can be frequent for many reasons and some are unavoidable. Psychic art

I HAVE always been very impressed with the many Psychic Artists I have met during my own professional Spiritual journey through life. When artistry is combined with Spirit something rather magical happens; and artists that are able to work with Spirit do so with each their own interpretation and style.

Whilst I see Spirit both as a Medium and a Clairvoyant, and can recall faces I have seen, I have no artistic ability, however, to transfer the seen image into a work of art.

Psychic Artists are using their specific artistry together with a spiritual connection to reproduce a wide range of artistic results. Some draw directly from Spirit and will reproduce the portrait of the departed. Many see Guides and will interpret them in human form; whilst some produce auras in profuse colours. As any artist can interpret without words each is entitled to each their own vision, as indeed am I. A highly talented Psychic Artist I have had the privilege of working with on many occasions, once brought me her portfolio of Spirit Drawings. We sat in my office and I was fascinated by her ability to reproduce direct from the Spirit World, and her interpretation. One picture really stood out for me. It was a Red Indian Brave out in the desert complete with rocks, tumbleweed and sand. We took a break for a cup of coffee and when we returned to look once more through the pictures my favourite picture had changed. The Red Indian had disappeared. He never reappeared ever again.

If it’s your birthday this week

often with a message. Many of the pictures are directly connected with me, but some are unknown, and it is these that almost sing to me. On my travels I keep the pictures with me because for sure one day someone in an audience somewhere will well up with tears and then will claim one of these works of art for themselves as they recognise a loved one who has passed over.

Last year a very dear friend of mine in Norway had a serious family crisis, and on the same day a picture of her was drawn by this artist, with a touching message that she should never to give up hope. For some reason I didn’t receive this picture, but when I saw a copy of it a few months ago in the studio of the artist I knew immediately who it was. I had to check the date to be sure, but it was the exact day of the onset of the crisis itself.

I well remember too the wonderful artistry of the Late and Great Psychic Artist Coral Polge, whom I met once at the Spiritual Association of Great Britain in Belgrave Square in London. Coral was an amazing Clairvoyant, and would give a reading whilst she was drawing simultaneously. She ended my reading by turning over a portrait she had sketched of my departed Mother. I was so shocked, but for a minute or so my Mother’s energy hit me and tears just flowed. It wasn’t until I got home that I unrolled the picture and there was something there I didn’t immediately see. Coral had written Dodi… my Mother’s name in the right hand corner… and she had spelled it right…my Mother never used the “e” at the end either!

Lyn P. I don’t think he would come so often if he didn’t want to see you. I am thinking that he doesn’t want to scare you in any way…so start a quick dialogue with him when he first comes through and see if this makes a difference. The less afraid you appear to be then the more he should make contact. The mist may permanently disappear, but if that is his chosen form of connecting I would be loath to change things because he has mastered a way of connecting with you and it works. Does your Father speak at all, or does he turn away? Is there any unfinished business between you?

Life cars

A real joy THE LEGENDARY Golf GTi often seems to be the benchmark for other hot hatch manufacturers to follow.

RARELY DO any surpass the high standard set by the German manufacturer. But pleasingly there might just be a challenger in the form of the Mazda 3. We’re not talking about the standard model but the MPS, which boasts a 2.3-litre turbo 260bhp engine and rockets from 0 to 60mph in an eye-watering 6.1 seconds.

This is surely enough to leave a Golf GTi at the traffic lights. You have to be careful though because it is front wheel drive and while pushing this phenomenal amount of power through those front wheels can be a great source of fun, it can also be quite lethal, especially when the roads are wet.

Tim Saunders Independent unbiased car reviewer Suffice to say that during my commute on a dreary winter’s day I was unable to push the accelerator all the way to the floor, much as I wanted to, otherwise I would have lost control.

As per usual, morning rush hours are incredibly frustrating, with even more motorists when it rains. It’s one of those days when every traffic light turns to red. I take a scenic back route and join the motorway at as late a junction as possible in an attempt to avoid the typical snarl-ups and accidents. We crawl on to the side road joining the motorway and then thankfully there’s a gap in the monotony. No sooner have I seen it and carefully pushed the accelerator accordingly, we’re there, with the equivalent effortless stealth of a cheetah.

Why is it that so many drivers insist on hogging the outside lane when the other two are faster flowing? It’s very frustrating but eventually the driver in front gets the message. And so they should, the aggressively styled MPS has a bulbous air vent in the bonnet, even making the driver of a Porsche wary. The six-speed gearbox is a joy, being stiff and decisive, just how it should be. Proton, take note...

I used to own a Mazda Xedos 6, 2-litre V6 and bitterly miss the style and handling of that car. But the MPS easily matches it and brings a smile to the face just as that used to. And the ride is hard and sporty, too. It’s a real joy.

The front electrically-heated leather bucket seats are comfy and it has a useful cruise control. The electrically folding wing mirrors are a distinct advantage.

A criticism that I have always had of Mazdas as a whole, is often the poor use of interior space. Consider the size of the Mazda 3 and it is disappointing that conditions are nothing short of cramped inside as you can see from the video at testdrives.biz. The reason for this is that the dashboard takes up a considerable chunk of room and if this was cut back, space in the front would be improved.

Fitted Up NOEL’S WORLD OF GOLF

RTN GOLF Club has now organised and held four golf club fitting and demonstration days for golfers in the last three months at Alicante Golf and we have been inundated with players trying to get fitted up with golf clubs that have the correct specifications for their own particular swings.

We will hold another at Alicante Golf on Friday 31st May with what I believe to be the top golf manufacturing company in the world: Callaway Golf. This will be the last chance our readers get to have their clubs custom fitted before summer arrives in Spain.

The feedback from the members of RTN Golf Club has been fantastic and enthusiastic at the same time.

Players have been hugely impressed with the new equipment they have purchased at these eventful days and many have learned that getting their clubs fitted has made what is a difficult sport that bit easier and all who have responded have seen increased distances with their new clubs. We are all getting older and most of us are using clubs with shafts that are too stiff or heavy or both: that’s not a good place to be.

The cost of getting custom fitted for your golf clubs in the vast majority of cases costs no more than if you buy a set of clubs off the shelf that you like the look of without trying out and is surely the way forward for all golfers who want to play golf to the best of their abilities whilst also making it as easy as it can be.

The real pleasure for me has been the expressions on the faces of players when they hit really good shots with their new equipment and they see the benefits of having clubs that are right for them. RTN has forged strong relationships with suppliers who offer special discounts to the members of RTN Golf Club who purchase equipment on one of our demonstration days and this means golfers have told us they have a custom fitted set of clubs in use that actually costs less than they would have paid for clubs not fitted specifically.

I am sure many of you will be reading this article thinking that I am just pushing club sales here: you could not be more wrong. I want readers to be aware of what is on offer in the market today and make educated decisions before parting with their hard-earned cash on something that is not good for them. Making purchases from an educated perspective will mean that you have tested the clubs and they will be right for you and you will have seen the ball fly into the distance when hit from grass and not from artificial surfaces

and into nets. This will be backed up with information from the latest computer equipment the manufacturers bring along meaning that when you go out to play golf you will do so with the confidence of knowing that you have your own clubs that you know for sure will perform: we all know what a dose of confidence does for golfers don’t we?

The RTN Club Scene THE LARGEST field of the year so far turned out for one of our weekly golf meetings at Alicante Golf last Tuesday as once again our fun-loving members took up the challenge of the Severiano Ballesteros designed layout in San Juan.

With absolutely no wind for the first time in many months all the players went off the first tee with high expectations for a good score. It was hardly believable then when all cards were returned that no player played to their handicap and once again our twos pot went unclaimed.

There is no doubt that the layout at Alicante Golf can be very tricky and when the pins are put in some places on the greens at times two putting is not guaranteed even for our best players and this proved true once again after Natasha Woodhams came in with thirty three points to take top spot and her third Ashworth polo shirt of the year so far.

Charlie Brogden who came in just one shot behind to take yet another prize; again from Ashworth clothing; is turning into one of our most consistent players and will surely take first prize soon.

Without doubt the shot of the day award goes to Allan Davies who assured me he is not too embarrassed at taking this award; for his shot on hole17 when he took a drop from the water. Allan then shanked his third which a red stake no more than 1½ inches in size and rebounded onto the green, he putted out easily to score a point in the most unlikely fashion.

Double podium for Supermoto brothers FOR THE first time this year both of the British Supermoto racing brothers from Murcia were in action at the second round of the Valencian championship at Oliva, near Denia.

The brothers were in devastating form, with Mat Ford-Dunn racing in the SM Masters class and younger brother Anthony in the tougher SM Open category.

Both brothers were trying new rear suspension parts that made the handling of the bikes near perfect for the fast flowing corners of the Oliva race track. Qualifying went well, with Anthony second in his class and Mat on pole for the SM masters. By Keith Nicol MARBELLA RUGBY Club took the crown of Under 18 Spanish champions on Sunday after winning the National Championship in Torrevieja. The hard fought contest featured the champions of the regional federations of Cataluña, Comunidad Valenciana, Andalucía, Madrid, País Vasco, Castilla and León, Aragón, Extremadura and Galicia.

Over 500 players participated in the championship that took place at Nelson Mandela and other adapted football pitches of the Sports City.

Parallel to the championship of Spain, Torrevieja also played in the National Tournament U18 rugby clubs. This was a friendly tournament open to teams that did not win the regional championship. Attended the event was Torrevieja’s Councillor for Sports, Luis Pizana, the president of the Valencian Federation of Rugby, Ignacio Davila, and President of the Torrevieja Tigers Rugby Jose Anguita.

This season, Torrevieja surprised everyone by winning their own division in only their second season of play and this weekend will play a three team tournament, kicking off at 2.00pm in the Nelson Mandela on Saturday, against Madrid. Everyone is welcome and admission is free.

Anthony managed a superb second overall in the much tougher SM Open class with his two second positions.

WELL THIS week saw the finish of the Pedrera for match fishing. When we arrived there the water was up to the road at the broken bridge and still rising. I intimated that I thought the authorities would fill it up again but just not this quick! After a brief discussion we were on our way to Blanca, another favourite of a lot of anglers.

The day was very warm with little wind and the fishing wasn’t that bad considering it was Blanca. There was only one angler who did not weigh.

Dave Hutchinson fishing the paste had a carp of 3.74 kilos (8.25lbs).

Maggot still seems to be the best bait, but you can get plagued with bleak; the joys of big and small fish living together.

ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS: Supplied by Terry Screen The 7th round of the Spring Series was fished at the Embalsa de Argos 7th May. The water is still high and in the trees with not a lot of colour in it, and the temperature is down, probably still recovering from the snow water that came in a few weeks ago.

This is our first visit this year and on our arrival there was a Spanish club just about to put their pegs in, but after showing them our paperwork it was explained that we were booked to fish the left side of the lake and they were booked to fish on the dam wall side which is on the right hand side.

To determine left and right banks if you look at the dam wall the left hand side is always looking downstream on the river.

FC Torry News Torry returned to the Vicente Garcia stadium to play their last home game of the season against Ribarroja who needed a win to have any chance of survival.

Torry having secured their 3rd division status for another season the previous weekend could relax and try to put on a show of exciting football. It wasn’t a great game but Torry had

Getting to know you OPENING A Moneycorp account is simple and opens the door to making easy foreign exchange and international money transfers.

Expats living in Spain will be asked for proof of identity and proof of their address – safeguards against identity fraud and money laundering.

Manager of private sales, Dan Barker said it was part of a process Moneycorp called ‘know your client’ and part of the company’s legal compliance duty.

“Opening an account is straightforward, we just need some details to know who the person is,” he said. “Our compliance team is very thorough – their job is to protect both the client and the company.”

BENEFIT Dan said the sales team explained the benefits of opening an account and the process of registering with the company.

“By this stage you hope people have bought into Moneycorp – it is pretty convenient when you get going,” he told RTN. “It is pretty easy for someone in the UK to be comfortable with their bank.

We have to ask them what price they are paying for that convenience – are they getting a good exchange rate from the bank. We can easily save a client between one and five percent.”

Private clients can also register to use Moneycorp Online (MCOL) which gives them the opportunity to trade either over the internet or telephone Moneycorp and trade directly through the dealing floor.

Dan said about four years ago it was decided to launch a new team of ‘customer service representatives’ to

answer queries and trade up to £20,000.

“It made for a brilliant client experience because they asked questions and were dealt with directly without being passed from telephone to telephone,” he said.

But with a massive private client data base, there were times when something “out of the ordinary” occurred on the market and the team was stretched.

The decision was taken to give clients the option of an internet service. “WE call it MCOL; to the client it is just an online system. It allows them to register separately with that – giving them the ability to either go and trade on-line

She said all customers had to open a trading facility to buy and transfer currency which meant giving Moneycorp identification – especially when they lived overseas.

“Some people see that as a negative, but we have to do it and if they go to another company and are not asked for documents, it is not a good company,” she said.

“We do not credit check people but we do, however, do identity checks. It protects people against identity fraud.”

And she said clients were asked why they were purchasing currency. “If you are buying a property in Spain but sent the money to Mexico it would raise questions.

“We need to understand why and by understanding we can also insure e are doing it the right way for the client and give the best guidance to the client.”
