Magdalena Mendez visits a kiwi farm
On Tuesday the Councillor for Agriculture and Rural Development of the municipality of Mazarrón, Magdalena Mendez, visited a Valencian fruit farm dedicated to the production of kiwi fruits, along with representatives of the local agricultural community. This visit forms part of an ongoing plan to look for alternative crops or fruit crops which are complementary to growing tomatoes. Mazarrón has long been dedicated to tomato production and historically was one of the most important tomato
production municipalities in the region of Murcia. However, companies which formerly employed large numbers of local people in tomato production have now changed direction, some of them closing altogether and selling the land for residential construction, whilst others, such as Duran, are now growing tomatoes in Morocco where production costs are cheaper. This has left Mazarrón with hundreds of unemployed agricultural and administrative workers
following the layoffs and production reductions. Creating new employment in the municipality is an ongoing challenge, hence the need to investigate the possibilities open to farmers and explore the options of growing new crops. Agriculturalists in other parts of the region have already reduced their dependence on traditional crops and are successfully changing their production to meet trends in the marketplace.
