RECENTLY the National Police intercepted eighteen tons of pulses from Columbia, in which 110 kilos of cocaine had been concealed. The seizure took place in Sangonera la Seca and police have now revealed that the drugs had a purity of 90% and would have fetched an estimated 18 million euros had they managed to reach their end purchasers. The drugs will be destroyed, but following their seizure, the problem remained of what to do with 18,000 kilos of kidney beans. The first reports following the discovery of the drugs indicated that they had been concealed amongst a cargo of vegetables, but the cargo has now been conformed as being dried kidney beans, so has a longer shelf life than fresher produce. The food cannot be sold, so the consignment has been divided between the two major food Banks in both Murcia and Cartagena, which have each received 9,000 kilos of kidney beans. Each of the Food Banks will be responsible for delivering these to various charities. Continued on page 6
