Agents from the Policía Nacional have been busy tracking down exotic looking birds on the internet, but it’s all in the line of duty. The birds were stolen from domestic gardens and aviaries within the Murcian region and were subsequently sold on via the Internet. The investigation began earlier this month when police received a report that 140 birds of the Psittacula krameri family had been stolen from a house in Aljucer. These lovebirds have a high retail value and are generally only on sale from petshops or breeders, as they can be quite difficult to breed, so officers trawled printed ads and advertisements on the Internet, contacting anyone offering birds similar to those which had been stolen. Fortunately for the investigating police, the thieves had chosen not to fly the nest themselves and had tried to sell the birds on locally, enabling officers to rapidly track them down and locate some of the stolen birds. Research has led to the suspects being linked with two other thefts, involving an African Grey Parrot (a grey parrot with a red tail) and 90 agaporni love birds, in the last two years. Five people have been arrested in relation to the latest thefts. All of them are (mature)Spanish adults, two of whom are the thieves, two are intermediaries and the fifth is the seller. Police have recovered 29 birds of the parakeet family Psittacula krameri (Rose-ringed parakeets) and 6 agapornis (love-birds) which have now been reunited with their owners.
