Murcia exports up SPAIN’S ECONOMY may finally be seeing some regulated growth according to the latest figures from the Ministry of Economy. The last quarter has seen the Murcia region exceed 3,000 million in exports in the first four months of 2013, an increase of 5.7 percent over the same period of 2012. by Keith Nicol IN APRIL, exports from the Community of Murcia reached 816 million euros, making up 13 percent over the same month last year with the turnover in the Market Services Sector in April experiencing a variation of 4.6 percent over the same month last year in Murcia. According to Foreign Trade data released by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, the turnover of EUR 816.8 million for April, brought the January to April total value of exports to over 3,000 million euros. The Minister of Universities, Business and Research, José Ballesta, evaluated the data and stressed that “we continue on the growth path established during the past year 2012, when in the first four months of the Region of Murcia reached a historic record in sales, a mark that this year we overcame”. In this regard, he said that “not only are we keeping pace as an exporter, but we are increasing.” José Ballesta said Murcia encouraged employers to influence their entrepreneurial spirit, to open up to new emerging markets and to diversify their product offerings. He added that “although it is very encouraging data for the regional economy, we cannot rest, and

we must remain competitive as soon as possible, to overcome the crisis.” The export growth of companies in Murcia over the first quarter was led by the sale of chemicals, which grew by 23 percent, exceeding 400 million euros. They also highlight food exports, which grew by 5.6 percent, surpassing the 1,200 million euros mark. In April exports grew thanks to the recovery of the major European markets such as France or Germany, and emerging markets such as China and the Middle East.

In April, turnover in the Market Services Sector showed a variation of 4.6 per cent over the same month last year in the Region of Murcia, while the whole country was 0.5 percent, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). This means, the counsellor said, that “we are the third fastest growing autonomous community”, behind Baleares and La Rioja. In comparison with the month of March, April’s growth was higher, reaching up to 5.8 percent, compared with a 3.1 average overall in Spain.
