Murcia’s Festival of Folklore by Keith Nicol
MURCIA’S INTERNATIONAL Festival of Folklore is about to get underway and to get things going, Mayor Miguel Ángel Cámara, presided over the traditional exchange of gifts with 46 groups who are participating in the International Mediterranean Folklore Festival.

The opening event was held in the Plenary Hall and also attended by the Councillor for Culture, Rafael Gomez and festival director, Manuel Fernández-Delgado. The opening featured eleven participants who handed the a traditional folkloric gift to the Mayor which Cámara exchanged for a typical Murcia ceramic. Joining the activities were representatives of Spanish folklore, from Ciudad Real, Valencia and Cartagena in addition to Murcia with internationmal participation from festival groups from Italy, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Armenia, South Africa and Panama. Cámara wished all of them a “very happy stay in Murcia, in a city that surely will leave a pleasant memory” and praised the role of the International Mediterranean Folklore Festival in that it can offer “an ode to tolerance and harmony through music, culture and our customs.” Continued on page 15
