By Jan Gamm Aqua Adicta are a small, family run watersports company that offers dinghy sailing, power boat trips and windsurfing tuition. This weekend they are running a Kayaki Safari from Mar de Cristal (near La Manga Club). Read the full story on page 58.

The paper has already enjoyed such a success in the area, it was decided to launch a dedicated Costa Calida edition – and just like the existing North and South Costa Blanca issues, the aim is to have pages packed with local news and events.

It is exciting times for the Costa – already a vibrant area with new commercial ventures like the new Corvera Airport and the planned Paramount theme park.

And expansion means thousands of more copies of RTN are now available from distribution points along the Costa Calida and further inland .

RTN’s Managing Director Geoff Gartland explained why the time was ripe for expansion. “Costa Calida is an upcoming vibrant area with lots of promising commercial projects such as Paramount and the new airport in Corvera, making it a place where people want to live and visit and spend their time.

“It is the perfect time to introduce our new third edition.

Many people have asked for more local content in this area.

Not only are we responding to our readers’ request, we are going one better and giving them their own dedicated edition.”

He added: “And as far as I am aware, RTN is the only English newspaper in the Valencia and Murcia regions to offer three editions.”

2 - 8 november 2012 Continued from front page An action group in the coastal town of El Campello is demanding for the landfill plant to be closed while proper tests and a full investigation are carried out at the site at Las Canyades.

Scientists from Elche University took air samples and detected “the existence of volatile organic compounds” and concluded they were “potentially dangerous”.

And company Socioenginyeria SL concluded “there is an unacceptable odour nuisance and a significant risk to the health of the residents affected.”

The waste plant opened four years ago and now receives the rubbish from 52 municipalities, the waste arriving at the plant by road.

SUFFER Campaigners say urbanisations to the north of the town are the worst affected. Depending on the wind direction surrounding villages can also suffer.

And they have already made an official complaint to the courts accusing Mayor Juan Jose Berenguer of failing to act on an environmental and public health issue – although following a series of public meetings and press conferences, the politician maintains he is working to find a solution.

The residents claim the scientists have proven people are being exposed to “chemical pollution and noxious odours....for which there is a clear risk to health” and demand the waste treatment plant should not be allowed to operate without independent monitoring.

Gary Roper, a resident of El Campello, told RTN: “It started after the plant first opened but the problem was minimal but with more

and more towns using it, the problems have got worse.

“It was touch and go whether it would receive permission in the first place but like many things it went ahead.”

He added: “I have two kids and hate to think how they are affected by the gases – we don’t know to what extent damage is caused by these toxic gases.

POISON “In my opinion this is an absolutely horrific state of affairs, when people are breathing potentially poisonous gases. It is very worrying.”

Gary said there had been a number of public demonstrations in El Campello and at the plant. “The numbers of protests have escalated as the problem has got worse, but there has not been anything powerful to suspend work there until it is discovered what is causing the release of these gases.”

He said there had been a number of inspections, including experts from Valencia and the European Union, but it appeared no one had any answers. “They all say it needs to be closed down while further investigations are made....but it is like hitting a brick wall.”

And he said the town hall had been “inundated” with complaints. “Residents are up in arms; we believe there has been one cover up after another.”

Gary described the situation for residents.

“Every night and every morning there is a terrible stench. You cannot open windows or doors open; there is a really horrible pungent smell.

“And over the last three or four weeks the stench has been unbelievable because of the wind direction and the weather conditions.”

The school day gets a makeover

Pharmacists on indefinite strike from Monday

by Jan Gamm UNDER PRESSURE from student groups and thanks to the determined campaigning of parents the Department of Education Training and Employment has drafted a new act within the Education Sector Roundtable which will enable changes to school timetables and also the way in which schools utilise their facilities.

The new decree and subsequent order to implement this legislation will allow greater autonomy to schools, providing them with the authority to adjust school hours independently.

Parents and student groups have worked tirelessly to achieve greater flexibility and autonomy within the school programme to better equip staff and parents to deal with severe cuts in the education system.

CONTINUOUS DAY The new legislation allows infant, primary and secondary schools to opt for a continuous day in institutions where the majority of students’ parents opt for a change of schedule.

Specifically, it determines that the school schedule, provided there is a majority agreement in place from the parents, may be tailored to the interests of students and this autonomy extends to

the schools adopting a continuous day and reviewing the length of lesson time.

EFFICIENCY Academic standards will improve as a result of schools being allowed to utilize teaching hours efficiently. Under the new schedule schools could be in business until 5pm. There will be greater flexibility during the school day for voluntary student support activities such as pastoral care. Additionally the

A generous effort provides shelter for strays

by Jan Gamm A MUCH-NEEDED shelter for stray cats and dogs opened in Callosa de Segura this week, the result of a joint effort between the local council and a band of generous volunteers that whipped up a sturdy set of kennels in just 21 days!

The project has been organised by a group of three Germans who spent their three week vacation constructing and furnishing the kennels. They travelled

at their own expense by van from Germany, loaded with tools and building materials and stayed in a beach house while the work was being carried out.

The Councillor Health, Cati Berenguer, accompanied by other council staff inaugurated the facility, located in the industrial area of San Roque.

EXCELLENT The facilities are excellent, with 2,500 sq ft accommodating kennels for 116

dogs and 66 cats in tile-floored wooden kennels that also has isolation units for animals carrying infectious diseases.

The new animal shelter is a dream come true for the shelter volunteers at Apadac, who until recently practiced as best they could on a farm that did not have the means to provide appropriate care for the animals.

Apadac is run by 70 volunteers, 20 of whom are actively involved in day to day care of animals.

Property victims one up at last

By Jan Gamm A MURCIA court has made a landmark ruling that could result in thousands of innocent buyers retrieving part payments and deposits they thought were gone forever.

Spanish solicitor Oscar Ricor, of Ricor Abogados represented a couple who paid a deposit on an off-plan property but then lost their investment when the builder went bust. However, the bank had in this case issued a guarantee to the developer that secured the purchasers’ deposit. All seemed well until it emerged that the bank had dated its guarantee, which of course had expired.

INVALID The Murcia court judge has now ruled that such guarantees cannot be dated and in cases where they have the validity time frame is ruled invalid, setting a precedent for other investors who found their hands tied when it came to claiming back their hard earned cash from insolvent builders.

The case is a classic example of thousands of others standing in line that parted with significant sums for what they believed to be a sound investment supported by a reputable bank only to be left with either a bare patch of land or an uninhabitable dwelling.

Murcia in the money!

THE DEPARTMENT of Culture has proudly announced the discovery of a collection of 11th Century gold and silver coinage. The treasure was found beneath Calle Jabonerías in the old town of Murcia. The coins were discovered in a ceramic pot in an old Moorish house. 423 pieces were unearthed in total.

The haul is being analysed pending confirmation of its provenance.

A school with Dickensian décor THE SORRY state of the Colegio Público Príncipe de España de Rojales has been the subject of complaint from parent association AMPA for years.

by Jan Gamm The building and its facilities have been branded “dangerous”, “unusable,” “unsanitary” and “a disgrace” by concerned parents that have tried just about every avenue of complaint to try to get repairs and maintenance carried out. Now they have resorted to ‘naming and shaming’ on Facebook.

Despite political promises made months ago the school continues to disintegrate around students’ ears as they endeavour to acquire an education in conditions that can only be described as Dickensian.

MAKE DO AND MEND City maintenance technicians continue to make do and mend, effecting repairs that are at best papered over and at worst downright dangerous. Peeling paint, water-damaged surfaces, hanging wiring and broken tiles

continue to be the main motif of the school’s dodgy décor forcing students to study in classrooms resembling gypsy encampments.

The situation for students and parents is now intolerable as the state of the school actively prevents parts of the curriculum from being completed. The school offers tuition on a wide spectrum of subjects such as computing that require the use of expensive equipment located in classrooms that are leaky, cold and in an appalling state of repair.

SAFETY The recent Gota Fria further aggravated damaged cornices and now parents of primary school children in particular are deeply concerned for their children’s safety from falling masonry. They demand that the dangerous cracked cornices are removed as a matter of urgency to avoid inevitable accidents.

The Queen wins in Pilar de la Horadada

IN THE Parade Float Competition in Pilar de la Horadada last weekend the winning float was based on the theme ‘God Save The Queen’ featuring an elaborate crown on its red coronation cushion.

The jury voted unanimously for the royal entourage complete with costumes and bejewelled accessories. In second place was ‘Shopping Gominolas’, and third place went to ‘The Tower of Pizza’.

The use of 112 in three languages

By Jan Gamm LOCAL POLICE information posters are appearing in Rojales in Spanish, German and English that explain the free and effective use of the emergency number 112.

The initiative is part of a joint corroboration between police and the Department of Public Safety and the posters will be distributed throughout the municipality over the next few weeks.

Police are taking a particular interest in the use of 112, not only to inform citizens on its correct use but also to prevent abuse of the emergency services available by the indiscriminate use of the number.

Health care confusion

EXPATS CONTINUE to be “confused” about how to access the Spanish health care system, the British Consulate ‘ConeXiones’ meeting heard on Tuesday.

People wrongly continue to use the European Health Insurance Card to get medical help rather than register as residents.

Martyn Standing of the Alicante Consulate’s pensions and healthcare team told the Calpe meeting: “We have been here about five years now and there is a fair amount of confusion out there – because of that confusion, we get an awful lot of complex cases to deal with in the consulate.

“And most of them are down to a little piece of plastic, the EHIC. This is a little blue card and a lot of people carry it around and use it to go to the doctors in Spain but it is not necessarily the right way to get health care here.”

He underlined the UK issued card was for temporary visitors to Spain. “If you live here this card is not for you.”

The EHIC card entitles visitors to “treatment deemed medically necessary” during their visit – and was not just for emergency treatment but could include monitoring of ongoing conditions, getting oxygen and dialysis, and repeat prescriptions.

“It does not entitle you to anything that can wait until you get home, anything that is not necessary,” said Martyn.

RESIDENT But he said expats living in Spain must register for health care here in a different way. “There are a lot of people who spend a large part of the year here but do not consider themselves to be residents – but when we have given them the correct information, do consider themselves to be residents.

“One of the problems for the health service is there is a

lot of people accessing treatment as visitors who should not be doing so.”

People who qualify to UK funded healthcare in Spain include pensioners, people receiving long term benefits, for a short time, early retirees, their dependents, and family members of a person working in the UK living in Spain.

And people should register using an UK issued S1 form available from the International Pensions Centre or the overseas health care team at Alicante.

Martyn said the British Government currently paid Spain 4,267€ for every pensioner to receive the same care as Spanish pensioners – and “promptly” paid its liabilities under the EHIC and S1 systems.

Halloween party tragedy

THREE WOMEN were killed and two people seriously injured when panic caused a Halloween celebration stampede at the Madrid Arena early yesterday morning (Thursday). A police investigation was immediately launched after the victims – two 18-year-olds and the third aged 25 – were trampled to death at the crowded venue.

The indoor arena can hold up to 10,000 people but it was not immediately known what had caused the 4am crush, although there were reports the panic was triggered when a flare was thrown into the crowd.

One witness at the music party told radio station Cadena Ser: “There was a human crush at the only exit they had because all the others were sealed off.”

Watch this space IT WAS good to hear that the Consulate is to hold meetings with Trafico representatives and health officials for the benefit of ex pats. I have been trying to change my English driving licence since before it ran out on 10th June this year.

I am a resident of Spain and following the normal rules was using my English licence and having a medical. The licence was due to expire so I made arrangements through a Gestoria and applied for a new Spanish one giving all the required documentation correctly.

Over two weeks after the English licence expired I was given a stamped form from Trafico saying that the application was proceeding: date 27th June. I was told this would cover any stop by Spanish police.

The Gestorias advised me not to expect things to happen fast saying some clients had to wait up to a year. I did not believe such comments yet after three months and with a visit to the UK planned four weeks later I contacted the Gestorias.

They spoke to Trafico who said the delay was in the UK not Spain. I duly contacted the DVLA and was told no application had been received for any details to be sent. I paid £5 and had the details normally sent to be provided. I passed these to the Gestorias who were told by Traffico that only Faxes with this info being sent from the DVLA would be accepted.

I requested that a further request be sent from Traffico for this info. Daily contact with the DVLA and I was told nothing received.

I put so much pressure on the Gestorias to sort it out with Trafico giving them the impression I thought people were misleading them - so much so, in fact, that Traffico copied

One Gestoria even said: “Do as most UK people do - lie and get a new English licence there.”

This one comment told me that the first discussion that the Consulate should have is: how do we change the communication method? Yes use faxes but have email confirmation that requests have been received. This will advise all parties that no delays should happen and give all a reference date etc. No English resident should have to lie or use methods other than those set down by the Spanish authorities to get this licence so someone needs to lead the field and sort it out.

Isn’t that what a Consulate job partly involves?

The way that they are killing us off we can’t go on much longer, so let’s form a referendum demanding our rights and asking for our money to be paid to us, not to foreign countries that have nothing to do whatsoever with our pension scheme.

and we are supposed to be very grateful for getting anything I think.

Whoever you are please start the ball rolling and see how many we can recruit to lobby the prime minister, who is so wealthy in his own right he doesn’t give a toss as long as his buddies in the City are kept happy…And it doesn’t matter which party is in power, they all suffer with the same disease: greed and to hell with old people.

ON BEHALF of Torrevieja Costa Lions Club I would like to pass on a few words of thanks. My husband, Iain, and I were honoured to attend a fabulous evening on Saturday, 6th October with the Just Brass band at the home of Gill and Peter Savage.

As well as being members of the band, Gill and Peter work tirelessly for charity with the Lions Club privileged to be the recipients of the funds raised on this occasion.

Under the musical direction of Ian Tynsley, Just Brass entertained the crowd with a varied selection of music, ably supported by the hilarious repartee of Ian Gibson!

Many thanks also to everyone who attended and generously contributed to the raffle and last but not least, massive thanks to Gill and Peter for kindly opening their home and garden to host this marvelous event and to the army of friends who worked non-stop behind the scenes serving food and drinks - you are all stars!!

On 18th October Just Brass band presented us with the fantastic sum of 750€, the proceeds of the event, which will be used to help others less fortunate than ourselves.

International visitors to Spain poured €6.2 billion into the economy in September of this year, representing a significant increase in the average expenditure per capita over the previous year.

As the average length of stay has remained the same it is apparent that visitors are simply spending more cash!

RUSSIANS In the Northern Costa Blanca the emerging Russian market is acknowledged to be bringing a welcome injection of cash to the tourism coffers, while the Southern Costas still attribute the bulk of earnings to the Brits and Germans.

Despite the tourist sector’s fears that this year’s VAT hike would prompt holidaymakers to make alternative arrangements data collected over the last six months show that Spain is still a firm favourite for families seeking a few days sun, sand and sangria…

Duchess wins reality show 2 - 8 november 2012

by Jack Troughton DRAG ARTIST Philip Garnett added a touch of spice to television’s ‘May the Best House Win’ and walked off with the 1,000€ first prize.

His modern refurbished apartment overlooks Benidorm’s Poniente Beach and enjoys wonderful views of the Med – and impressed his three fellow contestants.

Phil – whose alter ego is the famous Duchess of Benidorm – was approached by researchers to appear in an episode filmed in August and screened last month.

“They were looking for a bit of a character and said I was exactly what they were looking for because they needed someone to spice up the show a little bit,” he told RTN. “I said I was doing my drag show and they came to see it – they liked it so much that they thought they could combine the Duchess with the house.”

FILM He said appearing on the programme was great fun but hard work. Filming is over three days with a 5.30am start.

“And half a day was spent making video clips in the apartment and interviewing me in different rooms.

By Jack Troughton EXPAT DRIVERS must change their British licence for a Spanish equivalent or register it with Trafico, a meeting heard on Tuesday. Trini Verdu, of the Direcion General de Trafico, was speaking at a ConeXiones meeting in Calpe organised by the British Consulate, underlined the importance of taking the action. “After two years since you acquired a Spanish residency permit, you have to change your UK driving licence for a Spanish one,” she said.

“Or you can register you UK licence at Trafico – when your licence is due for renewal, you will be issued with a Spanish one.” She said the department recommended changing the licence. “If you lose your UK licence, or it is stolen or damaged, you will have no problem because, with either option, you can go to Trafico and ask for a new one.”

But she said if people did not take any action “and we do not have any records”, they would have to apply for a replacement through the UK authorities and undergo all the inconvenience it created. And Trini confirmed that to make the changes, a person or their representative needed to go to Trafico in Calle Catedratico in Alicante – two minutes walk from the popular Corte Ingles department store.

“In television everything takes time as they arrange different shots. Opening the door and welcoming the other three people to my home took an hour.

But it was fun and the four of us got on really well.”

Phil said his home was the third to be visited, which was an advantage as everyone had got to know each other by

that time – although they only met the Duchess as they toured the apartment.

“I think it came over really well and I hope it was something good for Benidorm which has had a hard summer in the British press this year,” he added.

“One of the reasons I did the show was to show off some of the finer things of the town.”

Calendar boy

ANSWERING A tricky classroom question launched an eight-year-old off on a quest to raise money for good causes at Christmas selling 2013 calendars.

by Jack Troughton Young Sean McConnachie is determined to help youngsters in Denia and Gandia with his “grand plan” – a ‘kids for kids’ strategy – supported by his parents.

A 4th year pupil at the Laude Lady Elizabeth School on Cumbre del Sol, Sean and his friends were asked “What would you do with a million Euros?” after reading the story Master Millionaire.

Big-hearted Sean immediately decided: “First I would help poor children, then poor animals.” And he returned from school pondering how to help children less well off this Christmas but quickly realised washing cars, sweeping pavements and helping in the garden would only bring in loose change and not nearly enough for his ideas.

However, last year Sean and his family travelled to New Zealand for a holiday and dad Ian, a former travel jour-

nalist, was in the process of making a calendar using spectacular photos taken down under as a present for patients of his mum’s Denia medical practice.

BRAINWAVE It gave Sean his brainwave. “ I thought what a brilliant idea – why don’t we print a lot more and sell as many of them as we can and give the money we make to poor children – now that will make a real difference.”

The resulting calendar is available in two forms: a 21cm by 10cm desk calendar and a 28cm by 22cm wall calendar. They contain 13 different pictures from the North and South Islands of New Zealand and are printed in three languages; English, German and Spanish and bank holidays for all three countries are included.

Both are 10€ each – half the cost pays for the printing and the remaining 5€ will be donated to two projects, a chil-

dren’s home in Denia which cares for 30 children and the 56 youngsters aged between three and 13 looked after by a handful of nuns and volunteers at Gandia.

Seanis being backed by his school and a number of expat groups and charities including Lions Clubs and the Euro Club Denia. And Sean and Ian will also be out and about at Christmas markets in the coming weeks selling the calendar.

Mayor of Fortuna finally forced to step down

by Jan Gamm MATIAS CARRILLO has announced his resignation as PP mayor of Fortuna, a Murcia town with around 10,000 inhabitants.

Carrillo was accused of offering municipal work and food vouchers to citizens of the municipality in exchange for votes in a 2003 election won with a predictable landslide majority.

In the face of irrefutable evidence of vote fixing supported by testimony from at least six independent sources Carrillo was found guilty of vote fixing yet refused to resign, maintaining he had gained an absolute majority and intended to stay in power.

OPPOSITION Following Carrillo’s refusal to leave opposition parties IU-Verdes and PSOE demanded his resignation and brought a motion insisting that he stand down in a tense and acrimonious

plenary session. Due to his PP majority within the council the motion could not be passed and Carrillo retained his position as mayor.

The High Court has now ratified the Judgment of the Provincial Court of Murcia and Carrillo has been banned from holding public office for five years on the grounds of flagrant vote-buying.

The Secretary General of the PSOE in Murcia, Rafael González Tovar, said: “It is shameful that Murcia has been subjected to one of the worst crimes in a democracy such as the purchase of votes.”

The PP of Murcia made a statement via spokesman Francisco Bernabé and said that it “…valued the responsibility shown by Matias Carrillo and that he resigned before the party had to enforce its statutes.”

Lorca continues to suffer A YEAR and a half after the May earthquake that shook Lorca the town’s problems are further aggravated by flooding at the end of September leaving damage that has now been assessed.

PP Mayor Francisco Jodar has confirmed that after the floods, more than

350 homes were damaged with 50 public and private buildings affected.

The farms and fields of the town affected by water have accounted for 200 tonnes of drowned animals.

The majority of the damage is concentrated in the districts of Campillo and Torrecilla, but the Consistory es-

timated public and private damage at almost €100 million.

There is still no official data on how many people are still unable to enter their houses after the earthquake but at least 1,500 families are still unable to live in their former homes.

Some major demolition projects are yet to be commenced and two secondary schools and a health centre are still in ruins, unable to function.

I WAS in the Brewer’s Arms, on a recent trip to Sussex, with three old hacks bemoaning the lowering of newspaper standards, when old Eccles (doyen of the Sussex Express) asked us which comical headlines we remembered.

Quick as a flash Julian of the South China Morning Post said it must be a Sun headline from years ago. The headline concerned an article about a jockey who had decided to change gender. In pursuit of this he had had certain dangly parts of his personage removed. Some wag at the Sun had titled the piece: ‘They’re Orf!’ “Ouch,” was the general cry. However, recently in the Huffington Post (you must know the Huffington Post, surely?) an article concerning a radical way to live longer could suggest the above jockey might have had longevity rather than sex-change on his mind.

Rob Brooks, the HP’s Evolutionary biologist writes, “A study of eunuchs has shown that castration can increase a man’s lifespan by up to almost 20 years.”

Okay Rob, tell us more: “Scientists analysed genealogy records of members of the Korean imperial court dating from 1392 to 1910.” Rob adds, “They included information about eunuchs who either lost their reproductive organs in accidents or underwent castration to gain early access to the palace.” Very interesting Rob but let’s get on to the longer life claims.

Apparently, these noble Korean eunuchs lived 14 to 19 years longer than men of a similar social class who were, shall we say, ‘intact’. Of the 81 eunuchs studied, three lived to one hundred or more. Convinced? No? Me neither; I can’t say I’ve bought into this life-pro-

longing tactic. Rob writes: “The average eunuch lifespan was 70 years, compared with 60 to 56 for non-eunuch men in the court.” You’ve got to ask about their quality of life, have you not?

Hmmm, why not just cut calories or fags to achieve seventy-years without such drastic action, eh? Well consider this: “Centenarians were at least 130 times more common among the Korean eunuchs than they are in developed countries today.”

I suppose it all depends if you really want to be a hundred that much. Lead research scientist Dr Kyung-Jin Min, from Inha University in Korea says, “This discovery adds an important clue for understanding why there is a difference in the expected lifespan between men and women.” I say a more important health tip came from the USA this week: simply eat yoghurt. Yup, a far less radical way to prolong your life is cut down your chances of developing hypertension. The Times reported: “To avoid high blood pressure, simply include yoghurt in your diet…” I don’t know about you but I’ll take that one over the chopyaballsoff technique.

Yes folks, the Murdoch broadsheet has reported that American research found in a study of two-thousand people that those who got 2% of their calories from yoghurt were “a third less likely to develop hypertension

over a five-year period than those who did not.” Better than the Korean way, any day… And the yoghurt they ate was only equivalent to half a pot. Here’s the science from University of Minnesota’s public health expert Huifen Wang: “Calcium is needed in muscle tissue, including blood vessel walls, and if there isn’t enough, they are not going to operate properly.” Huifen adds, “In effect the calcium helps keep vessels supple.” Huifen, I for one am convinced.

Perhaps an informed approach would be to have a vasectomy and eat a whole pot of yoghurt daily instead. How old would you get to live then? For an answer, send a self-addressed stamped envelope please, to Dr Min and Huifen Wang.

Saving water

by Jack Troughton TOP COSTA Blanca gardener Dick Handscombe aims to help save water, cut utility bills, and beat hose pipe bans with a new book packed with ideas.

“Making Waterless Gardens” has advice for gardeners around the globe and should help reduce the need for watering by half.

Triggered by the drought earlier this year – southern England faced hosepipe bans as early as March before receiving a lengthy soaking – Dick believes people “overuse” water because of the bad design of their gardens and allotments.

“They are using thirsty plants and not improving the water retention of the compost and not realising that most plants would benefit from a bit of shade during the hot months of the year,” he told RTN. And he said many gardeners did nothing to collect rain water and simply watched a free resource drain away without benefiting plants.

The book – which is subtitled ‘A Practical Reality Worldwide’ - calls upon Dick’s quarter of a century gardening in Spain and was inspired by a trip back to the UK in March.

DROUGHT He said on the train journey through the north of Spain and France he noticed how gardens had been hit by frost and drought, while in England garden centres were using irrigation systems – and people were already “moaning about having to survive another hosepipe ban.”

He added: “This book has about 300 ideas to make sure you can use less water to get a much better garden in terms of beauty, interest, more productivity and low maintenance.”

Dick’s top tips are to stop “watering shallow” every day and instead water “deep” every four to seven days, depending on the maturity of the plant and after three or four years stop watering trees and shrubs.

A warm and wet October THE METEOROLOGICAL Agency has reported that Spain’s average temperature throughout October was 16.6 degrees 0.8 degrees above normal, making this the warmest October in 42 years. Warmest days were 8th and 9th October, when it reached 34º degrees.

In towns like Pinoso Alicante, Rojales, Novelda, Elche, Benidorm, Crevillent and Madrid, the cumulative month has seen between 30 and 40 litres per square meter of rain. October 2012 ranks thirteenth among the wettest since 1971, and is the wettest since October 2008.

by Jack Troughton GOOD NATURED teacher Phil Baldwin helped raise 1,000€ for charity by submitting to the barber’s chair and allowing amateur stylists play with his luxurious locks.

Students at the Laude Lady Elizabeth School took part in a special Halloween fundraising day and curled, coloured, and combed his hair.

The cash will go to charities supported by the school – the MABS Cancer Support Group, the Red Cross, SOS Malawi, and the Tondtenga Farm School in Africa’s Burkino Faso.

Cartagena Port expansion plans take a step forward

by Jan Gamm CARTAGENA IS set to go forward with its ambitious plans to make improvements to the port area that will enable the town to become a Home Port for ocean liners.

As far back as the 16th Century Cartagena has been a major naval port. Now, to achieve eligibility as a ‘Home Port’ for luxury liners it will be necessary to make a number of alterations to its present facilities against findings of a port survey already commis-

sioned at a cost of 49,000€ from the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics.

Aside from proximity to airports and rail and road links to other major cities it is certain that Cartagena will be expected to increase its hotel accommodation, currently limited in the centre of town.

Since the opening of the newly completed El Batel Auditorium and Conference Centre it has become painfully obvious that the lack of suitable hotel facilities is holding back progress.

Local business would also experience growth as it increased to support Home Port trade.

Mayoress Pilar Barreiro has made a considerable effort to encourage hotel investment in the area. Undoubtedly the expansion of the port would attract significant interest and boost occupancy.

The viability study of Cartagena’s port area will take six months to complete.

Should the recommendations made as a result of the survey be manageable the city can look forward to a change of fortune.

Bridge repair to go ahead

MAZARRÓN TOWN Hall has approved expenditure of 450,000€ to fund repairs to the bridge over the rambla at Urb. Camposol. Part of the bridge collapsed during the Gota Fria of 28th September. The Town Hall re-organised budgets on other projects in order to address the urgency of repairs to the bridge and also to avoid borrowing more cash.

THE REVEREND Eddie Martens and his wife have been leading the Pilar Christian Community Church in Pilar de la Horadada for more than three years. The Church is legally registered and affiliated to the Spanish Pentecostal Denomination FADE. It is also registered to solemnise weddings.

Since January 2012 Nesta has been in charge of a community outreach, feeding the poor and the homeless in Pilar and surrounding areas with the approval of the Town Hall. Numbers increased and on just one day this month 107 people were fed.

warm sunshine with several dramatic ‘fly past’ demonstrations by the Spanish Air Force for entertainment. Stroke sufferers and carers alike enjoyed the short holiday: thanks go to the helpers who came along to give much needed aid and support, and who made the break so carefree.

THE OXFORD English Dictionary (Oxford University Press, 1971) defines risk as a ‘hazard, danger; exposure to mischance or peril’.

Unfortunately most people see risk as it is defined but by avoiding risk they can be taking risk. When it comes to savings, the majority of people view the word ‘investment’ as being an arrangement linked to the FTSE100. (The FTSE100 actually represents a fraction of what is going on in the world each day). Many prefer to have their money on deposit in a bank, because it’s safe. Here are three ‘risks’ with this perceived safe situation: 1. Your money is likely to receive less interest than the inflation rate. You risk losing money in spending terms each year.

2. Your capital is guaranteed not to grow.

3. There is the risk that the bank will fail and/or gamble with your money even though you thought it was in a cosy deposit blanket.

There are plenty of nightmare stories where investors’ funds dropped dramatically, especially around 2008/9.

Those clients of mine who have taken above average risk can now look at their investments with growth far outstripping anything which has been made available by banks. This approach is not for those who get nervous about their wealth on a daily basis. However, it has been proven that by sitting tight, losses are recouped and gains achieved.

For those who don’t want so much risk but want more than they are receiving we can put plans together, explaining what can be achieved. Often people are not comfortable with tying their money up long-term. We recognise this and we can arrange things accordingly.

Solidarity on the street

HUNDREDS OF people joined a colourful march through Benidorm last Sunday to support the women’s breast cancer charity Anemona.

More than 1,000 walkers helped raise cash for the group which provides practical help and advice for women developing the disease from those who have already been affected by breast cancer.

Anemona also provides hospital visitors to assist women undergoing the trauma of treatment and to lend a friendly ear to their worries and concerns.

The Olympics come to Rafal

THE OLYMPIC spirit was revived in Rafal this week when 1,200 residents turned out to take part in games designed for all ages and abilities.

The games were organised by the local council over a week, coinciding with the anniversary of Barcelona ’92 and came complete with an opening ceremony featuring the lighting of the Olympic flame.

The top three winners in a wide variety of events were rewarded with gold, silver and bronze medals.

Club Torrevieja Classics and Specialists Cars Where has the summer gone ?

What a summer for the Club Torrevieja Classics and Specialists Cars! It has been a long hot summer, but it did not stop us getting out and about. On some of the runs a few of the old girls got a little overheated (and the cars as-well...)

July saw us on what felt like the roof of the world which is The Cresta Del Gallo looking down on the whole of Murcia City and beyond, then back to Sucina for an excellent threecourse meal. We also took a day out showing the cars for MABS at their San Javier fund-raising event.

August was less energetic with a cool run one evening followed by a meal at Las Ramblas Golf Club and later in the month we supported the British Legion Expo day at the San Miguel Castle. September the run took us around the reservoir Torremendo and on to Quesada to play crazy golf.

October is always the busiest month for the Club, with the AGM Anniversary dinner and rally. The anniversary dinner on the 7th was as last year at the Veni Vidi Vici in the International Marina and various trophies were awarded at the event.

October finished with a run on the 28th with a visit to a bodega bating back to 1888, near the village of La Palma.

The current owners are old friends of a couple who are members of our club and kindly offered to give us a most interesting tour. The attached pictures show the start of the rally and wine tasting. The day finished as usual with a pre-arranged meal at the ‘Old Asia’ restaurant at La Zenia.

Christmas comes early A healthy turnout for the Bike Festival for HAH Mar Menor

by Patricia Thompson ON FRIDAY, October 26th, the second HAH nearly new fashion show was held at La Vereda Restaurant in Sucina.

Some beautiful clothes, all donated, were modelled by the ever popular ZIGI and her Dancersize girls. All the clothes were then auctioned, and with some wonderful bargains to be had!

The HAH volunteers also held their first Xmas Fayre, with nearly all the crafts, gifts, cards, cakes and jams made by the Volunteers, along with a giant Tombola, where everyone who bought a ticket won a gift.

HAH Founder Lesley Eburne said, “The work the team put into this event is unbelievable, not only collecting, washing and ironing the clothes, they have also spent so much time knitting, sewing and making the gifts: jams, cakes, table decorations etc... They then came along today and collectively raised a staggering 1,172€ for HAH! Apart from this, they also help out where needed with our clients: every one of them deserves a medal!”

Judith Heath (HAH volunteer) added, “ We have thoroughly enjoyed making and selling our products as we know that all the money raised helps so many people who are struggling with ill health. Plant Irises now for the spring by

IRISES PLANTED up to the end of November will develop a good root structure prior to the Spring flowering season to both extract the moisture and nutrients from the soil and also act as guy ropes to support the weight of the stem and flowers. So don’t delay looking around to see what is for sale this autumn.

Basically there are three choices: Dutch and Spanish irises and the larger flowered bearded irises and we are lucky to have Spain’s largest collection of bearded irises and mail order supplier right here on our doorstep - the Iris Garden high up on Bernia. We understand that they still have dry rhizomes for sale for autumn planting as well as a few potted but more expensive plants for personal collection.

Bearded irises have become a popular bulbous plant for several reasons: They flower in the spring They are perennials so flower for many years After a few years daughter rhizomes can be separated from the original parent plant in the autumn and planted to expand displays At this time it is best to discard the original mother rhizome The tough skin of the Iris rhizome means that it is less susceptible to eel worm, slug and snail damage than the thinner skins of bulbs such as tulips especially during the dry summer months There are many varieties available so interesting collections can be built up They do best in full sun They can be grown in dedicated beds, mixed beds, in containers and on rockeries Irises need very little if any watering and have few disease problems When you receive your package of irises open the packet immediately and plant out as soon as possible in a reasonably rich soil. A soil enriched with well-rotted compost or manure is preferable to feeding with manufactured nitrogen rich fertilisers.

The latter can result in too much green growth and smaller flowers. Plant so that the top is just showing with the roots spread out and covered with firmed down soil. Water once a week to keep the roots damp for a month - or two if there is no rain -until the roots are established. Always remember that irises do not like to be waterlogged. In the spring and early summer watch out for aphids if the weather is humid and spray for several weeks until the danger is past…

The height of the iris stem and size of flower means that the plant needs plenty of nutrients so feed your irises each year six weeks before you expect them to flower. Typically this will be March /April on the coast and April/ May in higher up inland gardens. A second feed each October is beneficial.

One thing that Christine Lomer emphasises is: “Please weed between irises and do not use weed killers as it can affect the quality – especially the colour – of the flowers.”

Finally if you invest in a few irises they are something that you can enjoy for the rest of your gardening days.

How much inheritance tax must I pay? by

IT OFTEN comes as a surprise to people that inheritance tax still exists in Spain, even when you inherit relatively small amounts. In many other countries, the UK included, inheritance tax is only an issue for the super rich. The majority of mortals don’t have to worry about it at all. Unfortunately in Spain, they do.

One controversial aspect of Spanish inheritance tax is that it does operate differently for residents and nonresidents. There are attempts underway to rectify what many see as an unfair system.

However, at the time of this article going to press different rules still do apply and if you own a house in Spain as a non-resident, you should be aware of this.

It often comes as another ‘surprise’ to people that when a spouse dies there is still a formal inheritance procedure to go through here. This happens because the Spanish inheritance system that Spanish nationals must adhere to is very different to that of the UK. Property is not necessarily distributed to the next of kin and there isn’t the same level of choice about who might inherit it.

In Spain, there are rules for Spanish national inheritance that include automatic inheritance rights for children. As a British or Irish national, you are able to follow British and Irish inheritance laws and this means that you can choose who inherits. However, you still have to go through the process of transferring roperty officially in Spain.

RESIDENT TO RESIDENT The good news is that if you and your spouse jointly have a residential home in Spain and you have both been fiscal residents for a specified period (with proof to show this is the case) then you should have no taxes to pay when one of you dies.

RESIDENT TO NON-RESIDENT The situation is not quite so straightforward if you are a resident leaving a property to non-resident children.

In this case again, provided you can prove residency, there should be no tax to pay by your children provided they do not sell the property within ten years.

If they do they will have to pay the tax along with any interest accrued.

It is worth ensuring that potential inheritors are aware of this as it can make a substantial difference to their future plans.

FOR NON-RESIDENTS Unfortunately if the deceased is a non-resident, there will be something to pay. In the case of two nonresident spouses with joint ownership, if one leaves their house to the other there will be inheritance tax to pay in Spain. This inheritance tax must be paid up within a six-month period or there is a risk of being fined. The details on the Title Deed cannot be changed until this is settled.

By splitting inheritance between more than one person the cost is reduced. For example, it can be beneficial to leave your house to both your spouse and your children.

WHO YOU ARE MATTERS You should also be aware that who you are matters in Spanish inheritance law. There are four ‘levels’ on which inheritors are levied tax. Children and grand children have to pay the least tax, followed by your spouse and then brothers, sisters, uncles and aunts.

If you aren’t married, in some regions you will not be recognised as a close relative and will be charged income tax at the same rate as a friend would be.

Cancellation of CAM Bank’s preference shares CANCELLATION OF a CAM Bank’s preference shares sale to a retired women for not having satisfactorily informed her about the consequences of the transaction.

According to Europa Press, a Court of Segorbe (Castellón) has recently granted a court order annulling a sale of preference shares from the CAM bank to a pensioner, condemning CAM bank to return the money invested, plus legal interest and legal costs.

According to the press, the judge decided to declare null and void the preference shares purchase agreement, understanding that there was a mistake in the consent given by the client - that is, she agreed to buy without really knowing the consequences of the sale and the risks of the transaction.

This was even though there was, on the purchase agreement signed, a clause exonerating CAM bank for any responsibility.

THE COURT UNDERSTANDS THAT: The Clause where the client agreed to the purchase of the preference shares is considered null and void, as that clause contained a wording imposed by the bank on the client that forced her to declare that she was properly informed about

the product and its consequences, and that all the necessary information was provided to her, when in fact, she was not informed properly. In addition the bank was responsible for drafting the documents using confusing terms and ambiguous expressions.

The judge also understands that the claimant did not act with the intention to speculate, and so she must be considered as a consumer, as she was just a pensioner who tried to get the maximum possible return for her savings.

The court understands that the verbal information provided by the bank was insufficient, and therefore the bank failed in its legal obligation to inform the client.

The court concludes that the lack of information caused an error in the client-consumer about the nature of the transaction and its consequences. That error must invalidate the consent given and therefore the preference shares purchase agreement signed.

WHAT CAN you do to make sure that you get the most for your money, particularly regarding the charges levied by your Spanish bank?

In today’s current market place many people looking to sell a Spanish property will have had to reduce the price of their property to be able to negotiate a sale.

With all the associated costs and taxes that need to be paid out, maximising the amount of pounds sterling that you finally receive for your euros is vital. Clients need to be aware of two important factors that can cost you dearly when converting your euros into pounds and moving those funds out of Spain.

SPANISH BANK CHARGES All too often British people living in Spain assume that Spanish banks operate in a similar way to the UK. This is not the case.

Once your sale has been completed you will receive a cheque from the Notary. Many Spanish banks will

charge a fee based on the value of this cheque to accept and clear the funds.

They will then look to charge a further percentage fee to send your funds out of Spain.

To put this into perspective, on an amount of 150,000€, you could incur costs of up to 1,500€ just to clear your cheque and transfer funds out of Spain.

As most clients close their accounts when they leave Spain, there is little room for negotiation. If you do manage to reduce the fees it is often based on leaving a lump sum on account for up to a year.

The agreed sale price of a property is often based on the amount of pounds sterling that the seller hopes to receive, according to the exchange rate at that time. However, a Notary / completion date can take place some weeks or even months after the contract of sale has been signed.

This means that sellers run the risk of the

exchange rate moving against them and thus reducing the amount of pounds sterling that they receive. For example, with an exchange rate of 1.25, a sale value of 150,000€ will give you £120,000.

Should this exchange rate rise to 1.28, a rise of just 3 cents, this would give a return of £117,187 – a loss of £2,813.

Beware of more skeletons in the cupboard MUCH OF the activity that has taken place in the banking industry is enough to spook even the hardiest soul.

This week’s third-quarter results will give an indication of some of the financial headaches lurking in the wings.

Libor is not the only skeleton in the cupboard for this industry. Barclays reminded the City about the scale of the payment protection insurance mis-selling scandal, with its shock announcement earlier this month that it needed to put aside another £700m to cover the cost of claims. This takes the bill for the big banks up to nearly £10bn even before the updates due this week.

Barclays, again, is the bank that best illustrates the new misselling scandal of interest rate swaps to small businesses. It will be in court tomorrow facing claims from Guardian Care Homes that it was mis-sold £70m of these swaps, which were intended to protect against rises in interest rates.

The Wolverhampton care home operator claims to have lost £12m. Barclays is not alone in facing claims over interest rate swaps: the Financial Services Authority estimates that 44,000 businesses may have been mis-sold swaps. Every bank’s third-

Barclays slashes bankers’ pay by up to half as profits fall BARCLAYS IS to cut the salaries of some of its leading investment bankers by as much as half in a bid to reduce costs and show that the bank has fundamentally changed following the financial crisis.

The Sunday Telegraph understands that investment bankers who earn a base salary of between £500,000 and £3m will see their salaries cut by between 30% and 40%..

In certain instances, salaries will be cut by as much as half. The reductions – still to be finalised by senior management within the division – will be drafted in at the start of next year following conversations with those concerned.

Barclays is to put aside another £700m to cover the cost of claims

quarter numbers this week will be scrutinised for signs of additional provisions to cover new claims.

And it looks like there could be many more new scandals just lurking in the background. Santander this week took a mishmash of a provision – of £232m, no less – to cover ‘conduct remediation’ and future regulatory changes. The bank did not spell it out, but only a small part of the £232m is likely cover interest rate swaps. Some will be the cost of helping the card insurer CPP pay out redress to bank customers sold identity-theft protection. On Friday CPP admitted it had made a £25m provision following an FSA investigation into the way the insurance was sold. Several banks used CPP to sell such insurance and may be forced to help cough up the compensation bill.

Then there is the potential scandal brewing from the sale of interest-only mortgages taken out in the boom years and now described as a £100bn time-bomb, as customers may never be able to pay off the actual sums borrowed.

It may not take much to tip this skeleton out of the cupboard, if customers start to complain they were not given proper advice or if the FSA decides to get heavy. In the run up to the crisis, up to a third of all mortgages were interest-only deals – a truly scary number if customers are unable to switch to a repayment mortgage when the moment comes.

FURTHER TO last week’s article ‘Take care with your money’ I have been inundated by individuals with horror stories to tell about their Bank in Spain.

The one I have had most complaints about is Banco Santander.

Please, please, if you have a deposit with any bank in Spain, even if you think it is just a normal deposit account, make sure it is.

The only way to do this is to go to your bank and tell them you want all of your money out now. If they say yes then you are okay - any excuses and you may have a problem. If they say you cannot withdraw it now, demand to know why? And ask them when you can have access to it all. It’s your money: make sure it’s safe.

Act now - it’s better to know where you stand than to possibly have a nasty surprise in a few months or a year’s time.

Still with Spanish Banks it has been announced that Spain’s ‘bad bank’ will be known as Sareb. It estimates that it will take €45bn of toxic real estate from Bankia and three other nationalised banks, plus more from a second group of banks that also need bailout money.

These banks will have to take a haircut on the market value of the assets they transfer into SAREB,

approximately 63% on the gross book value of foreclosed assets.

By asset type, the discount is 79.5% for land; 63.2% for unfinished developments and 54.2% for finished housing.

The average discount in the case of loans to developers is 45.6%, including haircuts of 32.4% for finished projects and 53.6% for loans to finance urban land.

Bank of Spain Deputy Governor Fernando Restoy is worried about sending house prices - which are only 25 percent off peak around the country - plummeting.

The price paid by the ‘bad bank’, he said, must not be taken as the market value, but you may ask if this is the price that the assets are going to be marketed at how can it be taken any other way.

Santander, BBVA and others who must now compete to sell their stock of toxic properties with the ‘SAREB’ are unlikely to be happy.

The forecast was good for the last day of summer, horologically speaking, and spirits were high. A sporting thirty minute opening sector loosened limbs and lungs before the way eased, pulse rates relaxed and conversation returned.

It was fun walking for a couple of kilometers along a disused asequia but this couldn’t last and soon there were boulders to surmount and rocks to climb as the group went for the Native American’s throat.

Heads were lowered and conversation suffered as height was gained.

A dozen walkers took up the challenge of ascending the poor man’s nose upon which they jumped gleefully whilst the more restrained walkers enjoyed lunch and dramatic views of the Mediterranean.

Smudges of Ibiza were detected on the horizon by the eagle of eye. The team was high now!

We went for a system that could supply all 92 properties on our community; we started by having a EGM giving people options and finally we chose Villamartin Satellites for the package they offered. Life tech

Installing AVG 2013 on new laptop I HAVE recently become the proud owner of a brand new Compaq Presario CQ57 laptop, bought for me in England and mostly I love it (although I do miss the help of IT support that I had when I was working in England!) I have installed AVG 2013 free edition and since then then the Internet keeps going off.

Not sure whether the two things are linked.

Since then I have read in one of the free English language newspapers that the 2013 edition is causing several problems and it might be better to stick with the 2012 edition. But I’m not sure what to do to uninstall the 2013 version. Any assistance would be welcome. Sue Goodman Aunty says: There are a number of methods to uninstall programs: Method 1: Via the Program Folder Option open Control Panel>Programs> Programs and Features>Select AVG 2013 and click ‘Uninstall’ button.

Select Uninstall AVG and follow the wizard prompts.

McAfee subscription expired

MY SUBSCRIPTION to McAfee has expired and I am loath to renew. Can you tell me whether such a subscription continues to provide a level of protection on expiry albeit without further updates so it does no harm to leave it ‘operational’ - other than to suffer the irritation of renewal reminder pop-ups. Or does the protection cease to function altogether and thus best option is to remove McAfee entirely from the current programs?

Aunty says: As far as I am aware, yes you are correct in that McAfee will continue to operate with no subscription, but it will not update the program or virus database. But using an antivirus programme that does not have an up-to-date virus database is almost pointless as it will not protect you from the latest viruses.

Other antivirus software is available offering a high level of protection for free, with the option to subscribe for further ‘tools’ and protection. Software like Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials, and AVG are available.

Restoring partitions HELLO, I decided to try Linux Ubuntu instead of (increasingly tiresome) Windows7 and after a short time decided against it because despite some good reports I found it very hard to work with.

After uninstalling Ubuntu I managed to delete what I thought was the correct partition and removed it. I had allowed a 30Gb partition and removed what I thought to be the right one and would recover the space on the hard disc. I found that my hard drive (C Partition ) was now 30Gbs ( allocated for Ubuntu) less than normal: I normally have 190Gbs of 220Gbs - I now only have 160Gbs of 190Gbs. After a lot of factory default clean reinstalls of Windows the 30Gbs are still missing from the drive. I have always assumed that a factory default restore would restore all partitions to the state of original installation but for some reason has failed to do so on this occasion.

Is there any way to restore the original partition set up to my preferred 220Gbs and restore the lost 30Gbs or would it be better to install a new hard drive and try to partition it to my preferred settings. Any ideas or advice on this would be appreciated. Mark Bayton Aunty says: A factory reset on a PC will only install the operating system and default programs. It will not, as you have found out, restore partitions to their original size.

You have two options: Windows & and Vista has a built in disk partition tool, available via Control Panel, System and Security, Administrative Tools, Create and format hard disk partitions. This allows you to create and change partition sizes. And it may allow you to recover the ‘lost’ 30gigs. (I use the word ‘may’ as I have not always had 100% success when using this!)

Use third party tools, like the free tool from www.partitionwizard.com, which I have found to be a bit more easy to use, more reliable, and more flexible with its options.

EVEN THOUGH are phones have got more sophisticated, sometimes we actually miss certain features from our old phones which were actually really useful. On older mobiles if you had missed a call or received a text message then there was generally a little LED light on the phone which would flash to notify you of this so you didn’t have to constantly wake your phone out of sleep mode to check if anyone loves you. On the new phones – all you get is a black screen so you have to constantly wake your phone up and waste the battery.

Every cloud has a silver lining and things will be much easier when you take vital steps to protect your interests and eliminate past fears and traumas.

Others have been judgmental towards you, but in the end it is you who have to see beyond and grasp this opportunity for what it really is; a chance to show what you can do and what you deserve.

The Mercury retrograde stops you in your tracks, but there is good reason for this as things are not quite what they seem, or what they should be. TRAVELLING HAS really opened up over the past few years. We are travelling more frequently, and fares have levelled so we can pay for the service that we want, and usually grab a bargain in the process. Planes are sleeker, travel times reduced and it is just as if we were getting off a bus to jet around the World.

But what makes a journey fly by is company. I know it is rare to encounter someone who hasn’t got earphones plugged in these days connected perhaps to a computer lap top, net book or tablet or MP3 player in motion. The stony face of the tired business man, and the scream of the wailing infant just behind you are not conducive to travel joy, but the person who wants to talk can trim so many minutes and hours off the travelling time, and allow it to really fly by.

I have given many psychic readings at two miles high, or discussed the goings on in the World in general; and the action of being a companion and having one is a wonderful but rare thing. O.K. I am not the only one who has made a conscious decision to pretend to nod off when the person in the aisle seat looks unfriendly or demented; but in general passing time in a confined space is brightened by good conversation, sharing things and conversing.

In the old days the airline meals served broke the journey. As we tucked into our trays of tasteless salads and congealed pasta at least we could look forward to the cheese and biscuits and polystyrene cups of Nescafe coffee or builders tea strong enough to trot a mouse

Monarch Airlines still serve such hot meals even on a short flight from the U.K. to Spain, and just entering the cabin on one of their flights is like instantly going back to the heady days of the daily ubiquitous smell of school dinners; though luckily boiled liver and lumpy custard are not on their inflight menu. The drinks trolley causes a diversion too. Here thirsty or non thirsty people select a drink because it passes the time, but where I ask you, are the free peanuts of the past?

Helping time pass is an art. Spirit has been allowing us to make connections for years, and many have taken the opportunity to have them as a companion, travelling or not. But as we travel on through this journey of life to unknown or maybe undisclosed destinations it is sure that they can and do provide the adequate passing of time, and the serendipity of strangers on all routes hence. There may not be any free air miles, or those romantic airline tickets of the past (rather then our self printed A4 pages!) but there is safety, speed and travel geared to the present needs of the travelling population whoever they may be.

Try taking off the headphones on your next flight, you never know who you may meet, sky high and trapped in your 33inch seat pitch. Spirit however are always in motion and may have just exactly what you need spiritually whether you are speedy boarding or not. All you have to do is to take off!

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Step by Step Spanish 6 SOMETIMES YOU have to take one step backwards to move two steps forward, and sometimes you just have to revisit things you may have forgotten. To go on to our next topic we need to remind ourselves about some things called “past participles”.

We learnt about them in my original Essential Spanish articles, around about number 30. At that stage we were learning what I call the “recent past” tense. That is the one that translates “I have seen”, “we have been”, “he has driven” etc. and we learnt that the forms “seen”, “been”, “driven” and many more, are called “past participles” (in Spanish “participios”) which combined with “have” and “has” (in Spanish the verb “haber”) they form a past tense which refers to things that happened recently and still affect the present (I have lost my keys – “he perdido mis llaves”) and also to refer to things that occurred in an undefined time in the past (She has been to France – “ha estado en Francia”).

That was a rather brief summary of something that needed two or three articles at the time, but I want to get on to a related subject now. Actually, I think I will stick to English for a bit longer to give an example of where I’m going. We have a verb in English “to break”. The past participle of this verb is “broken”. To form the tense I have just mentioned, we could say for example: “The child has broken the vase” or perhaps “My boyfriend and I have broken up”. In both cases we are using “have or has” plus the “past participle” to form this “recent past” tense. However, as English speakers, you will also be aware that I can use the word “broken” in other ways. “This vase is broken” or “This is a broken vase”. In this case “broken” is being used as an adjective, even

though it was originally a past participle. An adjective is a “describing word” and describes the vase, in the same way as adjectives like “big” or “red” - “the pretty vase”; “the red vase”.

So, let’s get back to the Spanish language. The verb “to break” is “romper” and it has an irregular past participle – “roto”, meaning “broken”. To go back to our examples, I can say: “El niño ha roto el florero” or “Mi novio y yo hemos roto”. In these sentences, and when the past participle of any verb is used to form this tense, it never changes its ending. It always ends in the letter “o” and is not affected by whether it refers to things or people that are singular or plural, masculine or feminine. However, when this participle is taken out of this tense context and is used as an adjective, it starts obeying the rules of adjectives. We would say “El florero roto” (the broken vase – masculine singular) but also “los floreros rotos” (the broken vases); “la silla rota” (the broken chair – feminine singular) and also “las sillas rotas” the broken chairs.

At the end of last week’s article is used a participle in a similar way.

I said: “You would be very confused! - Estaríais muy confundidos”.

“Confundido” is a past participle, from the verb “confundir” which is being used here as an adjective, and therefore agreeing with the plural form of “you”, with the added “s” ending. This is on the assumption that more than one person reads these article. I think I’d better stop at this point.

Breast Awareness BREAST CANCER is one of the most common forms of cancer in woman and is responsible for approximately 12,000 deaths in the UK every year.

The chance of recovery is greatly influenced by early detection. You can help yourself by being ‘breast aware’ – this means getting used to the normal shape and size of your breasts. Instead of examining your breasts monthly for abnormalities, you should do more regular checks so you become familiar of what is normal for you. Be aware of their appearance and texture, and note that these can change through the menstrual cycle.

BE AWARE OF: General changes: • One breast suddenly gets bigger than the other.

• Dimpling or puckering of the skin.

Breast lumps: • Any breast lumps, especially those not associated with the menstrual cycle.

Nipple changes: • In-turning of the nipple.

• Differences in the position or shape of the nipple.

• Colour changes.

• Rashes: these are uncommon, though the nipple can be subject to eczema, a condition called Paget’s disease that is cancerous and can also cause a nipple rash.

• Discharge.

Should you become aware of any breast changes, however slight, it is advisable to see your Family Doctor without delay.

There may be a simple reason for these changes (something that can be easily treated) but prompt diagnosis can make a massive difference to prognosis should any changes be due to breast cancer.

I like a pea now and then but I simply have to have a leek WHERE WOULD we be without the humble pea? So simple and yet so delicious simply heated up in a little butter and a sprig of mint to make the perfect accompaniment to just about any dish. Pureed with a little seasoning and a little horseradish or cauliflower mash for a pea puree underneath a roasted sea bass or mixed with some bacon or vegetable stock and a little mashed potato and mustard for the perfect soup, served hot or cold and simply delicious. However, given the choice I’d still prefer a leek, so what about the humble leek?

There is not enough time or space to accurately describe the problems associated with the leek, from different beginnings to different varieties, or its apparent association to Emperor Nero who, I have been told, ate considerable quantities in an effort to improve his singing voice. History does not explain the results of his efforts but he was apparently nicknamed by people Porrophagus (the Leek eater).

A much easier way to think of leeks and their application is as posh onions where it is perfectly correct to serve separately as a dish with a meal; onions simply add a little something that is already a dish

before, during or after cooking. Yes, they are ungainly and the best bit, for me, is usually removed to get them in the packet. Even at the local market I was offered the chance to have the green removed and when I said, “No!” the stallholder asked if I was a chef. I will highlight a couple of easily overcome problems with leeks: Leeks can be a bit gritty inside: So, cut them lengthways in half and wash thoroughly.

They are huge and we can’t eat it all: Whilst braised leeks used to be a featured vegetable dish on many menus and were cooked in fairly large pieces for presentation purposes then covered in, let’s call it, gravy but were almost impossible to, not only serve, but eat as well.

Have you ever tried to cut a cooked leek with a table knife? Having washed them thoroughly slice as thinly as possible and either use them raw in a salad (trust me) or sweat gently in a little butter until soft but still bright green, remove most and allow to cool, leaving the remainder to continue to cook then add a little flour and cover with milk, bring to the boil briefly to thicken, add salt & pepper to taste and for me a little grated

clove for the perfect vegetable dish.

Maybe you would like to leave them plain and continue to cook naked until caramelized. Use these as a topping for burgers, hot dogs or added to your own particular gravy favourite to accompany cooked sausages and mash. To the remainder of the cooked and still green leeks (throw away nothing) add some diced cooked bacon maybe even cooked together in the same pan and once chilled add some fresh or even tinned cockles, clams or berberechos and then refrigerate. This particular mix of mine is fantastic and can be used anytime in perhaps a cockle, leek and bacon quiche, quick and simple to make especially if you use frozen pastry (three eggs to a pint of milk) or in empanadas. Even in omelettes, pies both hot and cold, and best of all watered

down with some hot milk and some small diced potatoes makes the best chowder even a President would be proud of.

WHEN A couple breaks up it generally unfolds in much the same way – ‘he said’ and ‘she said’ gets bandied all over the place and although people will always be people, when you are a person like Katie Price who has courted fame in the way she has, it’s little wonder that when ‘it’s over’ gets out the paparazzi vultures are onto it in a flash.

But like most of the breakups that happen for balloon boobs it’s turning out to be rather an ugly affair.

Argentinian male model Leandro Penna and Katie met at Elton John’s Oscars party last January and have been telling the world ever since how they were destined to be together and how nothing could tear them apart … until last week that was. Katie was quick to react stating on her website “Leo and I have had a lovely fun time for a couple of years, we will always feel deep affection for each other – however, sometimes relationships just run their course.” Its heart rendering stuff is it not... Katie went on to say about how the pressures of work meant they were spending lots of time apart, and blah-die blah-die blah … and so we come to Leandro’s take on the parting of the waves.

Speaking candidly to Caras (Faces) magazine from his home in South America Leandro said, “She was driving me insane. I left simply because she is crazy, her brain is not wired right, or the wires don’t connect properly.” Doesn’t sound too much like Katie´s version now does it, but he’s not done yet: “I was thinking it over recently and one day I packed my bags and left,” added the Argentinian hunk.

One of the main attributes of Cosmetic Surgery’s Woman of the Century is her ability to get right back in the saddle and I won’t be surprised if she’s doing that very thing as we speak.

ALL OVER last weekend we were treated in the press and on TV with something or other to do with the latest Bond movie ‘Skyfall’, with glamour high on the list of items to get our juices flowing ahead of the exciting 007 action.

Speaking of glamour, it was interested to read about Lisa Riley, the female who has taken it upon herself to make a punt at becoming the next Bond girl. Yes, ex-Emmerdale actress and now Strictly Come Dancing hopeful Lisa Riley believes her stint on the show will help her land a role as the woman who, next time out, will whip Daniel Craig into a frenzy of wild

unadulterated passion. It seems Lisa’s bizarre plan was spawned on the back of a friendship that’s blossomed between her and other Strictly contestant Richard Arnold whose day job is reporting on famous peeps, and while he was interviewing director Sam Mendes at the premier Lisa tweeted him saying “Does he want a fat girl who’s light on her feet in his next movie? ASK HIM!” There’s nowt wrong with bigging yourself up of course, but as Lisa has already done that and some, maybe she should leave it right there huh!

N-Dubz is a definite dud YET ANOTHER female completes the lineup today and as it’s to do with mouth and trousers X Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos it will be short and not so sweet. Week by week this young woman has gone about the business of gathering a following of people who find her way of speak-

ing to aspiring hopefuls whom she sees as lesser individuals both condescending and superior, and boy has this behavior jumped up and bit her on the jacksy. I find the show mind numbing and therefore never tune in, but have it on certified authority that she said on a recent programme that she is looking forward to reuniting with her group N-Dubz, but when she caught up with them last week - ac-

cording to The Sun - they told her it´s not going to happen. Kayak Safaris on the Mar Menor

By Jan Gamm GET OUT on the water for a wet and wonderful experience this weekend! Marine excursions by Kayak Safaris from Mar de Cristal (near La Manga Club) are run by Aqua Adicta, a small, family run watersports company that offers dinghy sailing, power boat trips and windsurfing tuition.

The safari involves some instruction on the beach followed by an excursion to one of the islands or beaches on the Mar Menor with a chance to go snorkelling and investigate the wildlife.

Kayak Safaris range from 2 – 4 hours in length with prices depending on the number of people taking part.

They run private safaris for individuals, couples, families or small groups. Open enrolment events are also scheduled throughout the season at 40€ per person.

A variety of single and double kayaks are available, encouraging everyone to have a go - the singles require

SEVERAL EASTERN European countries have enforced zero tolerance (no drinking and driving at all) for a few years now. The laws there are the result of the driving population ignoring the dangers of taking alcohol or illegal drugs resulting in many accidents.

In some cases the accidents were caused by the influence of medically prescribed drugs that have serious side-effects where the driver was not supposed to drive anyway. So in these countries you must not drive at all having taken alcohol or mind-changing drugs - get caught and the penalties are severe.

The newly appointed Director General of Trafico in Spain, Sra. María Seguí Gómez, has promised that this new law will very soon be implemented in Spain. And while there will be a significant few who will object strongly, recent traffic accidents show that drunk drivers are still killing and maiming others, knowing that when they plan their day or evening this is what they are going to do. In my mind that is a premeditated crime.

In fact the statistics show that nearly 50% of deaths on Spain’s roads are due to a driver being way over the set limits and this includes drugs. It has been announced that the equivalent of the Breathalyser for drugs is ready for use.

Some of the fools who are guilty of the crime are British expats who for years have been used to drinking the set amount - they come to Spain not checking the local laws which state that the percentage limit is much lower than in the UK. Regular readers will know my reasons for being very upset at these fools, with friends being crippled for life by drunk drivers crashing into them, in the UK and also when I was a police reservist (volunteer) in South Africa about 15 years ago where I had to clean up administrative and emotional (telling the relatives) messes after a drunk driver has wiped out others and usually themselves as well. So the new law may cause those who are still driving out of control to mend their ways but knowing many of these types I would not bet on it.

But what else can we do to not become victims ourselves?

Perhaps as I did years ago, tell them off when they boast about their stupidity and take their car keys away from them?

Be safe out there. Winter is nearly here again: quieter roads and cooler days.

A break from the norm?

AT THE beginning of the season I said I’d give the Premier League a rest once in a while and have a look at the top-flight of our adopted nation. But, to be honest, at the time, it was a bit of an empty threat because I’ve been bored stiff the past few years watching the nine-month-long, two-horse race that is currently branded as “La Liga”.

Don’t get me wrong, Barcelona and Real Madrid are fantastic teams and play some fantastic football but when it’s a straight battle between two clubs, every year, with third place a million miles away, I can’t help but feel it’s like watching the Scottish Premier League (only with good players and before Rangers went bust!). Could this season be different though?

Could a team break the decade-long monopoly of the big two? Well, they’re doing it very quietly but Atletico Madrid are level on points with Barcelona and eight points ahead of Madrid so now might be as good a time as any.

What normally occurs though, when such talk begins is that things go horribly wrong for the club with a previously all-too-fragile bubble of self-confidence bursting. In Atlético’s perfect world, the side would continue on its fantastic streak of twenty-two victories without defeat in competitive games and eight wins and one draw in La Liga. However, they’ll be finding it hard to avoid the title-winning talk since last Sunday’s win equalled the run from the double-winning campaign of 1995/1996 and sees Atlético Madrid on course for their highest league finish since that season.

anyone to get carried away with a team matching Barcelona game-for-game and having given Champions League-winning Chelsea a heck of a caning on a spare Friday in August.

The immensely scary coach recently dismissed talk of winning streaks to declare that “records are for history and journalists - We live for tomorrow”. With other managers you’d suspect that they’re secretly gathering a scrapbook of their successes, but that’s not the case with the tattoo-laden Argentinean, whose core strength is his ability to motivate his players and terrify his footballers to death if they don’t give the mythical 120% in every game.

But are they good enough to all the way? How good is this side? Well, aside from Radamel Falcao (whom we spoke about last week and maybe on his way to Chelsea) it’s a modest one, but the strongest seen for some time in terms of quality. They haven’t truly been tested yet (with games against Real Madrid and Barcelona not coming up until December) but it’s their consistency against the meat-and-veg of la Primera that has been key so far. They’ve fought and scrapped in every game and managed to win without always playing well which is the

mark of any title winning side.

Atlético may be able to play and plot like a small team for now but it remains to be seen if they have a big team’s aspirations.

Third place and a return to the Champions League must now be the side’s minimum goal but the performances and progress of the team so far have given the players permission to think of something other than merely the next match. I’ll certainly be hoping that, while the heavyweights are preoccupied with beating each other into submission, the featherweight can nip in with the knock-out punch and revive my interest in La Primera Liga.

The Final Whistle

Watching a few post-match TV interviews with Premier League managers recently reminded me of that classic Monty Python sketch that contains the lines; “Do any of these word embarrass you? Shoe? Megaphone? Grunties?

How about Wankel Rotary Engine?” Ridiculous I know, particularly as the sketch was introduced by Professor Karl Gruber of the Institute of going a bit red in Helsinki. But just as ridiculous is the continued use by managers and coaches of the word ‘contact’.

Just how and when this tiresome word was introduced in to the footballing vernacular is anyone’s guess but it now seems to have replaced the word ‘foul’. I’m not picking on Sir Alex Ferguson, but two of his quotes demonstrate the point well. When Ashley Young was accused of diving some time back, Fergie said “He played for the penalty. However, there was contact so it was definitely a foul.”

Then, this past weekend after Chelsea’s Fernando Torres was shown the red card for apparently diving following

a challenge from Jonny Evans, he came out with “Jonny may have just caught him a little bit but you can either carry on running, which he could’ve done but he chose to go down.”

Now hang on a sec. If ‘contact’ constitutes a foul in one instance, then it must in the other, no matter what the decision of the ‘contacted’ player. And this is where it gets messy. For example, I’m sure we have all witnessed countless examples where ‘contact’ has sent a 6’3”, 14 stone centre forward crashing to the floor when in reality, it wouldn’t have hampered the flight path of an octogenarian, arthritic Daddy-Long-Legs on his way home from a big night out.

I chatted about this to my buddy Gary Sargent who can be found on most Sunday morning’s reffing kids league matches in Javea. Being impetuous, full of vigour and a bit high on adrenalin (that’s the kids not Gary) the players tend to ‘contact’ each other quite a bit. Luckily for them, Gary uses a bit of common sense when judging what

THE COMPETITION this week was the 4th round of the Winter Championship, the venue being the Embalse de Ojos or Blanca.

This is now becoming an even more ‘love to hate’ venue. The day was pleasant with not much wind (or fish) and ended with five blanks. Doug drew the flier peg at the mouth of the incoming stream, and it was game over for first place. The rest struggled to catch one fish, although for me a myriad of bleak helped to while away the hours.

FC Torry news TORRY TRAVELLED to Gandia last Sunday and were followed by a coach of supporters from the Torry Army. The game was a bit of a lacklustre affair with neither side creating too much. Gandia went in front with a goal on the stroke of half-time when one of their forwards was brought down by Manolo as he attempted to go round him in the Torry box. The resultant penalty was put away for a GOALLLL to Gandia. Torry made 2 substitutions at half time to try and get themselves back into the game. The longer the game went on the more threatening Torry became and got their reward in the 77th minute with a diving header and a GOALLLLL from Gasch after great work by Jorge. Vicente then got himself sent off for a second bookable offence. The game ended with honours even.

Yesterday Torry played 2nd in the table Utiel at home and lets hope they were victorious.

No game on Sunday by the way.

Trofeo Two medals for Torrevieja swimmers Penon SATURDAY SAW the start of this season’s swimming competitions. 21 swimmers from Club Natacion Torrevieja travelled to Petrer for the 13th Trophy: Villa de Petrer.

Nine swimming clubs from across the region presented 372 swimmers in 16 races. After a difficult start to the season for the club with no water in the Torrevieja Pool for three weeks, members of the club worked hard and two swimmers. Bastian Martinez and Piroska Rideg, won bronze and silver medals in their races. Bastian took bronze in the Benjamin 100m butterfly and Piroska silver in the 100m Infantil Backstroke: an outstanding award for both swimmers especially Piroska being in the younger year of her category.

Other swimmers in the club improved upon previous ‘personal bests’, Artem Nikolaev, Amy Connolly, Victoria Pigneur and Samira Lucumi all improved in the Benjamin 100m Libre events.

Elian Del Rio Castillo, Eva Kovalenko and Alexandra Amat gained new PB’s in Alevin 100m Libre, in the older libre category sisters Louise and Ruth Brassington improved upon previous 100m Libre times, Ruth being placed 4th in her category. In the girls’ 100m breaststroke Paula Garcia improved her time in the Alevin group and Nayda Cheetham in the Infantil category.

All swimmers worked hard and the club is now focused upon regional league controls and additional trophy competitions. Well done to all swimmers. de Ifach Cycle Sportif, Calpe

TWELVE MEMBERS of Team ‘Cyclogical’ from Quesada travelled to Calpe at the weekend to participate in the 3rd Trofeo Penon de Ifach Sportif, staying at the Diamante Beach hotel, the main Headquarters for the race. The race is always well organised by Patrick and Kathy Deneut with plenty of helpers, dispatch riders and police assisting in marshalling the route. The race started at 9am sharp on Sunday morning with the course covering a distance of 126kms and over 2500 metres of very steep climbing. 316 riders participated with many saying it was their ‘hardest ever’ event. The first group of riders were back after four hours with others taking more than six hours to complete the circuit. All of Team Cyclogical performed well and despite two punctures, a broken spoke and a chain that came off they all finished with respectable times and had a great weekend. They won the team trophy which was a beautiful Crystal Trophy in the shape of Calpe’s ‘Penon de Ifach’.

Team Cyclogical meets every Thursday night and Sunday morning at 9am and cover between 90 and 100kms at a moderate to fast pace - so if you fancy a challenge come along on a Sunday and join us. We also have a new, slower group starting on Sunday 11th November for Intermediates looking to improve their riding ability and have a new group of friends to train with so come along and give it a try or call Gary on 637 487 377. Beware the dangers Noel’s world of golf

SAFETY ON golf courses is something that many of us overlook but golf courses can be dangerous places for those not concentrating on what they are doing.

On Sunday I was told of a golfer who fell into a small stream because the spikes on his shoes were worn and had not been replaced for some time. I have no doubt that the shoes were comfortable and probably at that stage where they were worn without thinking as a result. Soft spikes in modern golf shoes wear out fairly quickly compared to the metal spikes of the past. The spikes in shoes are there to keep us safe as well as help us play golf better.

Good quality footwear with good spikes is essential if we are to remain in good health. Soft spikes need replacing around every three months if they are to perform to the levels the shoe manufacturers expect.

The costs of replacing the spikes are much lower than the cost of a broken or damaged ankle.

In a second incident I was told of a player who hurt his back probably as a direct result of not warming up

properly. The golfer went to the café for a coffee rather than the range to warm up and therefore went straight to the first tee without hitting one single ball. After a few practice swings without any sort of stretching or limbering up he hit a good drive but the second shot cost him dear. Hitting a wood he proceeded to swing so hard he damaged his back and as of Wednesday he is still in hospital in Denia.

It is important we remember none of us are getting any younger and the body takes longer to heal.

Damaging our bodies is not a good option at any time so my advice is simple really: golf is a dangerous game if we do not give it the respect it deserves. It is great fun to play and we all reap huge rewards for the game at times.

Playing after warming up and consideration for our own safety will ensure we can enjoy the game for a lot longer.
