The roof collapsed during the Sunday service
Chapel roof collapses in Lorca
AS IF Lorca residents did not have enough to worry about! Worshippers at the Capilla del Cristo de la Sangre witnessed the collapse of the roof of the Chapel of San Antonio on Sunday while they were attending a service in the only useable part of the church following the earthquake of May 2011. They heard a loud rumbling before the roof caved in. No one was hurt in the incident.
NEWS OF the increases met with indifference initially but with the arrival of the first water bills that included the new tariffs on 31st October the community threw its collective hands up in horror when faced with demands that represented an average of at least 50€ more than the usual rate. Residents contend that the bills represent an increase of around 80%, a figure that some members of the community, especially pensioners on a fixed income, will find impossible to manage. Around 2,500 angry protesters descended on the Town Hall this week to demand an immediate review of the tariffs. Water supplier Acciona upholds that consumption for 15 cu mtrs of water has been increased from 48.32€ to 65.52€. However, a resident in Puerto Vallarta has produced a statement that shows a charge of 679.52€ billed in August against one showing a demand for 1.621.11€ in October (including of course the increase in VAT effective from 1st September). The council is to an extent side-stepping the issue, by reminding protesters that water in the area is no longer supplied by the council but by Acciona. And the problem is further complicated by the fact that water prices in La Unión were artificially low as a result of not being reviewed for at least eight years. Continued on page 6
