They say the local council in Castell de Castells has known of the problem for a year yet seems “paralysed” to rectify the situation in what is described as an “unbelievable situation”. Letters have been sent to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, the President of the Valencian government Alberto Fabra, and President of the provincial government Luisa Pastor Lillo at the Diputacion de Alicante, asking for top level intervention. And now the growing protest has been made public as the press, radio and television have been informed of the emergency. Spokesman Harry King said in 2012 a new “and very good” road was built around the village, above the main road – naturally the road – a former track following the contours of the hillside – had a drainage system and drains from some houses were also linked into the new drains. However, he explained the new system was not connected to the main drains on the main drains on the road below – effectively

creating a blockage. “When it rains the drains overflow causing erosion on the hillside and this erosion blocks the main road below,” Harry said. “We have had no rain for some time. Now the drains are completely blocked with sewerage from the houses. Raw sewerage seeps from manhole covers and up through drain grates in the street – in a few days we may have raw sewerage in the streets of Castells.” APPALLED And Harry added: “This is an appalling situation. Smells are common. Disease may occur. If so, the politicians in Alicante and Castells will be held accountable.” He said the council was aware of the situation but had done nothing to rectify the problem. “It has got steadily worse until the smells are totally over-powering. I have a letter to the Mayor signed by all the Spanish people in the street supporting the action we are taking,” said Harry. Continued on page 3
