A WORRIED Costa Blanca resident fears she is being slowly poisoned by toxic gases allegedly being released from a waste plant. The pensioner moved to El Campello in February and believed it was paradise – until she started to feel sick and suspected airborne chemicals might be to blame. The 47.6 million euro plant was opened in 2008 and is expected to have a 20 year lifespan. It processes the waste from some 52 Alicante municipalities. Campaigners maintain homes to the north of El Campello have been worst affected and have accused the town hall of dragging its feet over an environmental and public health issue – but Mayor Juan Jose Berenguer insists he is striving to find a solution to a problem that has already reached the European Parliament.
