by Jack Troughton The hospital has the largest children’s oncology department in the Valencian Community and treats 120 new cases a year but boasts a 60% to 80% success rate depending on the form of the disease. Opened in 1973, the busy La Fe unit has a multi-disciplined team including surgeons, doctors, nurses, radio-therapists and social
workers. Last week the team was represented by Adela Cariete and Victoria Castel, who visited Cancer Care in Javea Park to receive a cheque. Adela explained the money was earmarked for two new projects – research into nueroblastoma and neuropsychological rehabilitation of young patients. And she told charity volunteers: “Cancer Care began to help the Paediatric Oncology Unit of Hospital La Fe a
few years ago when we needed some help for one of our research projects. “From that time on Cancer Care support has made it possible to buy medical devices as well as diagnostic tools for children that had neuropsychological troubles after a childhood brain tumour or leukaemia.” Adela continued: “We were very impressed and deeply touched by the warm welcome we had when we came to Javea the first time
to share with all the volunteers our results and ideas. “We are very happy to be here again to explain our two recent projects; one in neuroblastoma – it deals with the molecular biology of that cancer as a target for new therapies in cases with a bad prognosis – and the second one in neuropsychological rehabilitation”. And she concluded: “We always aim to cure children and to take care of those we cure.”
