Rock ‘n’ roll Santa By Jack Troughton RIDER OF the (snow) storm Father Christmas has updated his traditional mode of transport – swapping reindeer and sleigh to go globetrotting on a powerful Harley Davidson. Santa - Clive Webster once again dressing in red and white and sporting a fetching set of whiskers – arrived at the annual Bay Radio Christmas party astride the Road King Classic he purchased in 2000. However, some things never change. The welcome for Papa Noel from the children of the Preventorio de Gandia was as warm and as loud as ever.

Donations totalling hundreds of thousands of euros are being made to organisations like Caritas, the Red Cross, and town hall social services departments from expat charities, clubs and societies, and bighearted individuals. Wherever Brits migrate throughout the four corners of the globe, they start to help others less fortunate – and there is no better example than in RTN-land. Charity is part of the British DNA. And with the festive season in full swing, the “unsung heroes” stepped up a gear and are selflessly hard at work proving in the true spirit of Christmas, giving is infinitely better than receiving. British Consul Paul Rodwell and his Alicante-based team launched the ConeXiones project, an initiative to get charities and ass ociations working along-
side social services and Spanish charities. However, he is constantly amazed at how the British community strives to help others regardless of their nationalities. HEROES “Since I arrived on the Costa Blanca in August 2010, there has not been a day that I have not been struck by the amazing capacity of Brits to help others in need. On my visits up and down the coast, I regularly come into contact with unsung heroes who not only help British tourists and residents but anyone who is vulnerable and in need, regardless of nationality,” he told RTN. “I shudder to think of how we at the Consulate would cope if such a support network did not exist.” Continued on page 6
