Fault sparks blaze

A FURIOUS Calpe resident believes that the blaze sparked by an electrical fault early on Monday morning was caused by “negligence”. by Jack Troughton In a statement to the Guardia Civil, Denys Alblas alleged eight hours earlier Iberdrola engineers had been called out by a neighbour to a problem with an electricity pylon – but refused to examine a similar metal pole in his garden where company equipment was “arcing and spitting sparks”. He told RTN: “I was very annoyed about this, because in my opinion this is gross negligence by Iberdrola, they were here at 6pm on Sunday and it had been arcing all day long.” And just two months ago firemen were called to his villa when sparks started flying from the “device” and they called the emergency services - and the next day engineers dealt with the problem The pylon is around 10 feet from the side of Denys’ home on Maryvilla – on the side of the Mascarat Toix Mountain, overlooking the Marina Alta resort. “At around 2am there was an almighty bang and flash that woke us all up. My son Phillip rang the emergency services and to make sure I rang them again five minutes later.” “The pine trees to the side of the house were alight and the heat was tremendous – the flames leapt the road and started up the mountainside, it was an inferno, everything was roaring away.” Strong winds fanned flames across the mountainside towards the sea – fortunately away from homes but 23 people were evacuated and taken to a Calpe hotel. Flames burned around 30 hectares of land and firemen from Benidorm and Alicante were joined by two helicopters and a fire-fighting plane in a

bid to control the blaze, finally extinguished on Monday afternoon. Flames were seen surrounding homes but despite the intensity of the fire none were destroyed and no one is reported to have been injured. However, rare plants in the Toix natural park they only grow in four places in the world – were destroyed. A full investigation of the cause of the

fire is still being carried out but at present the authorities are blaming an electricity fault. Denys said people were standing in the street wearing nightclothes and jumpers before being allowed back into their homes – but at around 4am they were again woken up and told to flee. Support local business or risk losing them by Keith Nicol EVERYWHERE ONE looks, town centres, urbanisations and commercial centres are littered with empty business centres, with for sale and for rent signs adorning their doors. After the property boom years when new property agents, corner shops, pubs and restaurants all seemed to pop up on a weekly basis, the last four years have seen a global downturn in earnings and high unemployment with many families and businesspeople and fearing what the future will bring during this current crisis. One local, popular restauranteur said “The first indication of a problem was the change in the Euro to Pound exchange rate, which for a lot of people made such a difference to the amount of their pensions, followed by a lot of scare mongering amongst the World’s media, which in effect stopped the economy. Everyone stopped spending; people held on to what they had because they were not sure what was going to happen. Every week we look on as a steady number of local businesses close their doors. The problem that they are faced with is that whether they take any money or not, they still have the same overheads to pay, Electricity, Water, Gas, Social Security, Wages. IVA, Supplies, Advertising, Asesoria, (Lawyer), Rent, Rates, That is all before they can

Torrevieja’s Plaza which is 90% closed and awaiting rengeneration

think about making any money! A very good friend of mine who runs a very popular restaurant said that one day last week she only took 11€ and as you can see from the list of overheads, it cost her a lot more to be open than she took. She also said she was not sure just how long she would be able to remain open as without the support of her clientele she has no cash flow left to put back into the restaurant to keep it open!” The Spanish Government have remained bullish when it comes to the self-employed and are inflexible when it comes to demanding at least 250€ from them, whether or not they make this much each month! This also stops business owners employing part time staff, as they can’t afford to put

them on contract and the wages make it not worth the while of workers that would like to work part time. Thus many business owners are forced to work seven days a week from morning till last thing at night to cut down on staff costs and then sleep evades them due to the worry of it all. The message is clear. As our restauranteur says “Let’s be positive about our future; let’s get out there and support out local businesses even if only to have a cup of coffee or a sandwich or to buy a pint of milk, if not we are going to see an awful lot more closing during the coming months which is such a same as it only takes a little bit of help from us. If not we will lose in the long run as we will not have the choice of places to visit.”

Continued from front page “If the wind had been in the other direction, I would not have a villa now,” he said. “But I am furious this should have happened only hours after the engineers were here. The fact these guys would not look at the pylon, I think is complete negligence.” Denys’ son Phillip said he was cleaning the swimming pool on Sunday when sparks started to fly – burning his hair and a sweatshirt. “I had to run because I was in danger of looking like Michael Jackson when his hair caught fire.” SEVERE Denys said he knew his neighbour had rung Iberdrola because of a disconnection problem and so he went out to speak with engineers to alert them to the severe arcing from the pylon in his garden. “But they said ‘we are not looking at it now’, I asked ‘tomorrow?’ and they said ‘no’.” They were allowed home on Monday afternoon to begin the job of cleaning up the mess left by the fire. Iberdrola has since “bypassed” the problem equipment on the pylon. Calpe Councillor Paco Cabrera said the fire had destroyed plant life including the rare ‘silene hifacensis’ which only grew in four parts of the world, including two sites at Calpe and on the Montgo at Javea. However, he said botanists had ‘mother plants’ and would be able to take seeds and replant the plant. “The fire affected about 30 hectares. It started on the Calpe side and went over the mountain because of the wind - it has run along the line of pine trees behind the urbanisation but has also destroyed the protected area of Toix,” he said. “Fortunately there was not a lot of low lying vegetation because the area is very rocky, so there was not a very intense heat to deter fire fighters.”

A new taxi war at El Altet by Keith Nicol

EVERYONE IS probably aware of the risks of using an unlicensed taxi to take them to or from the airport. Stories abound about Guardia Civil stopping these ‘black taxis’ and even impounding cars, not caring whether or not the passengers make their flight abound. But now a new and more serious war has broken out at the airport, allegedly caused by Elche Taxi Drivers who think they should have 100% of the Airport Taxi pie, to the total exclusion of everyone else. The word is that Torrevieja Taxi drivers are suffering continued attacks and abuse every time they pick-up travellers and sometimes when dropping off customers at the airport! Torrevieja taxi drivers and others from the province, such as Santa Pola and Benidorm, are outraged by the sabotage they are subjected to, which has intensified in recent weeks. Last week, Torrevieja cabbies issued at least three

complaints to Court No. 2 of Torrevieja, through the headquarters of the Guardia Civil, which relate to the behavior of Elche Taxi Drivers who have thrown insults, eggs, stones, threats and even assaulted other drivers. Last Saturday one Torrevieja Taxi had two tyres slashed, and was forced to complain to the local police in Elche. He was subsequently surrounded by a group of Elche taxi drivers and one of them kicked him several times in the left leg. The assaulted driver also accompanied the denuncia with an injury report. On the same day, three other taxis suffered punctures and on Monday, other drivers, after receiving more insults, again called the police. Also on Monday, a taxi driven by a woman was stoned and she had to leave the airport escorted by the Guardia Civil. Torrevieja taxi drivers, think the airport should designate part of the parking area for only Torrevieja Taxis, separate from Elche. On Monday,

Torrevieja’s Deputy Mayor, Joaquín Albaladejo, asked Alberto Martinez, the Government’s Deputy Delegate to step in and help deal with this matter, and yesterday, Thursday, Martinez met with the councilors responsible for both cities to try to end the conflict. TorreTaxi.es is one of three main Taxi groups in Torrevieja and they are legally allowed to work the airport. Taxi number 43, Roque Vicente, who had his car vandalized this week issued a word of caution; “Never just pick up a taxi from the Airport. Please always try and pre-book your taxi. Not only are there illegal taxis at the airport but if your destination is Torrevieja, Benidorm, Denia, Javea or the Orihuela Costa, chances are that the driver will not know exactly A broken wing where he is going. You will be driving mirror on the meter and your trip will cost you and more. I know of one client who ended eggs are up paying over €80:00 for his trip to thrown Torrevieja!” To find out more about at the taxi prices, visit www.torretaxi.es.

Burger King says no to horse meat BURGER KING in the UK and Ireland has made the decision to terminate its contracts with Silvercrest, one of the companies involved in the ‘horse meat scandal’ that shocked Europe in the last two weeks. While the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries has confirmed that horse meat poses no threat to the health of consumers suspicions have been raised regarding the identity of other meat ingredients supplied. Burger King operates hundreds of restaurants in Spain, the first opened in Madrid in 1975.

Nearly 300 illegal kindergartens

THE ASSOCIATION of Early Childhood Education Centres in the Valencian Region (Acade-Adeiv) has announced that there is a total of 275 kindergartens operating illegally and without the authorisation of the Ministry of Education. And only 44 of these establishments are in review. Many nursery schools are required to undertake a series of expensive improvements before they may be licensed which could account for the unacceptably high incidence of illegal kindergartens. 210 of the illegal schools are in and around Alicante with 75 in Valencia.

Force 10 from MABS

by Jack Troughton BRITISH CONSUL Paul Rodwell opened the new MABS Cancer Support Group Centre this week comparing the driving forces behind the charity to the recent gales. MABS has taken over a modern room – which can be partitioned off to provide a treatment area – at the old folk’s home in Teulada, Centre Residential Ana Maria Espinos Llopis. The large room allows the charity – and other associations – to hold meetings and coffee mornings, while another space securely houses much-needed medical equipment that is loaned out to help with home nursing. “It has been very windy the last few days and now the sun has come out. Working with MABS President Jacqui Phillips is like working with Force 10 gale – all the energy, getting things done and then it’s all sorted. She is a lady who makes things happen,” he said. Mr Rodwell paid tribute to the social networking between charities like MABS and HELP that were working with town halls and Span-

ish charities to achieve goals and help people. SUPPORT “It means whenever anyone is living isolated and without support they can be seen and helped as required.” And he said the new MABS Centre – its old premises at Moraira will still be used for counselling and consultation – came into being through the town hall providing the rooms, the Teulada Moraira Lions Club giving money for the partition, and MABS own “energy” making things happen. Jacqui Phillips, MBE, thanked the consul and Teulada Moraira Councillor Sylvia Tatnell for their support in making the centre a reality. “A lot has happened for MABS in the last 18 months. We have new shops in Javea and Oliva, a ‘drop-in’ centre in Benidorm, and we are achieving more integration which is so important.” And Jacqui also introduced the new MABS van, used for collecting and delivering the medical equipment and picking up donated furniture for the MABS shops.

by Jack Troughton JAVEA MAYOR Jose Chulvi is meeting with his English-speaking Facebook friends later this month to explain his ideas for the future of the Marina Alta town. The mayor has more than 300 ‘friends’ on the social-networking site – he also has a Spanish site – and he invited them all to the Parador Hotel at 10.30am on Monday 25th February. Mr Chulvi naturally put forward the initiative on Facebook and following positive replies organised the ‘face to face’ meeting. “I will introduce you to my Englishspeaking team and make a short presentation on my ideas and vision for the future of Javea, a town where everyone can participate in building our future together,” he said. And saying he looked forward to meeting as many people as possible, he added: “Please feel free to bring along your own friends who may not have access to the internet.”

Scientists discover Moorish secret by Jack Troughton EXCITED SCIENTISTS have discovered part of an ancient street network and houses in Denia dating back to the Moorish occupation. Archaeologists stumbled on the road in the town’s historic centre running through Calle Mayor and say it dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries. The town hall’s municipal archaeologists were called in when the British residents of a home in Calle Mayor submitted plans to build a pool in their courtyard. Because the home is in a protected area, there is an obligation to examine the site for remains before building work starts. They found the 2.2 metre wide street running parallel with Calle Loreto, compete with

a gutter running down the centre, needed for storm water to run away – and also containing of items helping date the roadway. And excavation director Josep Marquis said it went against the widespread idea that Islamic streets of the period were winding and suggested a broader network of urban roadways through the centre of Denia. The work has also identified the remains of a 12th century home in the Andalusian style. So far, parts of a paved floor has been uncovered, a toilet, central courtyard and well. A staircase leading to the roof has also been found. Archaeologists have also found a rope lamp of the period and the remains of a toy ceramic horse that would have served to amuse children nine centuries ago.

Benidorm learns to attract holidaymakers via Smartphone

BENIDORM IS staying ahead of the game yet again by teaching tour professionals the art of utilising Apps to generate business and also to retain existing customers. The results of a recent survey by Hosteltur show that in 2013, more than 20% of reservations for holiday, flights, hotels and other tourism-related activities will be booked on a single click via a Smartphone. It is therefore vital that establishments learn how to profile their services to best advantage in the world of 3G! The Tourism Development Centre (CDT) began a course with trainer Miguel Ángel Catalán teaching 15 professionals the mysteries of the Smartphone this week at El CdT Domingo Devesa.

Walk on by

by Jack Troughton LATVIAN STUDENTS joined Friends of the Museum of Xabia (AMUX) to enjoy the association’s first organised guided walk from the town’s cemetery, across Las Valls to the Ermita de Popul. More than 70 people, plus children and dogs, strolled across the slopes of the Montgo Natural Park and en route Ximo Bolufer, Municipal Archeologist and director of the museum, and Josep Castello Mari, pointed out places of archaeological and cultural interest, as well as the history and architecture of the church. The group of girls from Tume in Latvia are spending three months studying at IES No1 Javea as part of a school partnership and during the walk were able to practice both the Spanish and English they are studying in school. AMUX – Amics del Museu de Xabia - is a new cultural association set up by volunteers to support Javea’s museum and to offer people an insight into the history of the town and surrounding Marina Alta. Man sets fires to his own home POLICE HAVE arrested a 47-year-old Spanish man for setting fire to his home in Alicante. The fire occurred on Sunday afternoon in a building accommodating 20 homes over five floors, forcing the evacuation of dozens of residents with others taking refuge on the roof to escape smoke and flames. Fire fighters were able to put out the fire quickly, enabling residents to return to their homes at about 5pm. The man has reportedly been known to behave strangely in the past – at one time throwing all of a neighbour’s furniture into the street. He was treated by emergency services prior to being admitted to the Psychiatric Hospital in San Juan with a suspected mental disorder.

Pioneering spirit helps expats by Jack Troughton BRITISH AMBASSADOR Giles Paxman was impressed by the motivation and dedication of local councillors working to help British expats integrate into life in Spain. The diplomat attended last week’s forum in Alicante with local government councillors who have a responsibility for European residents. Organised by the British Consulate, it was described as a “pioneering initiative” and entitled ‘Working Together to Support British Nationals.’ The 15 town halls attending the meeting represent more than 100,000 British residents – more than 75% of the registered British population living in the province of Alicante and around a quarter of all expats registered on the town hall ‘padron’ across the whole of Spain. And Mr Paxman underlined the positive economic impact of all British citizens – tourism alone contributed 1.32 billion euros to the Valencia region in 2011 – even before adding the positive impact of expats. He added that under EU law, the UK paid the Spanish government 277 million euros in 2012 to cover the cost of healthcare provided to British nationals. The ambassador recognised that one issue that local authorities were dealing with on a daily basis was healthcare and how to insure expats could access care they were entitled to. He also accepted other areas of concern were how to overcome the language barrier and how best to support the elderly and vulnerable, many lacking family links close at hand. PORT Mr Paxman told councillors that the town halls should be the first port of call in most instances and concerns must be addressed by working together and involving local communities. He said: “The forum was a pioneering initiative to share

best practice between the different councillors of the main town halls where British nationals are resident. It was also an opportunity to clarify what the Consulate can offer. “British residents make up 7% of the population of Alicante province; so it is important that town halls are seen as the first port of call for those that need help.” And Mr Paxman continued: “Judging from feedback, the event was very useful for the councillors and will enable them to help British residents who are finding difficulty plugging into the Spanish system.” During the meeting councillors looked at ideas to encour-

Going legal HAVING HEARD so many varying stories re changing an English licence to a Spanish one I decided to go ahead and become ‘Legal’ in this country. I took the medical as required to obtain a five year licence and submitted all the relevant documents whereupon I received a permit to drive until the Spanish authorities had informed the DVLA and were ready to issue my licence. I duly received the Full Licence till around two months later, current until 1917. In the two months between submission and issue I received a letter from the DGT (Spanish Trafico) informing me that ‘you may have six points or less’ and gave me details of the cost and procedure to attend a course enabling me to reinstate my licence with its full quota of points. As far as I was aware I had not lost any points since taking up residency some years ago and after showing my letter to my solicitor was told: “that is just a formality - ignore it,” which I did. Over the next three weeks I received five more of these letters - four in the post on the same day -

which seem to confirm a computer ‘glitch’ so again I dismissed them… On receiving my licence I decided to check on my points via the Trafico web site (DGT.es) which is fairly straightforward and on doing so was astounded to find I had NIL POINTS and was therefore suspended from driving for six months before I could take a three day course followed by a test (probably all conducted in Spanish) and at a cost of 320€ to me. The excuse was that the letters had somehow automatically caused the computer to delete points (?) Luckily after a visit to Traffico in Alicante the problem was diagnosed as ‘computer error’ and I was reinstated with 12 points much to my relief. The moral of the story being - for anyone else deciding to go ‘legal’, even though you may receive your licence check the points you may or may not have - had I not checked and been stopped by Traffico whilst driving I was liable to arrest as a Disqualified Driver without being aware of the fact along with all the problems that would have caused. Let’s change the laws for animal cruelty THANK YOU for printing the horrible story about ‘Poppy the Dog’. The world should know what nasty things they are. When I read the article I cried. These thugs must be mental! Good job I never saw this as I would have done the same to them, just to see how they like it. They say Spain has no money but the government could earn a fortune on fines for animal cruelty. People don’t know where to report animal cruelty if they see it. You can contact Seprona, which is part of the Guardia Civil in Altea on 96 584 0525. Does anyone know where to write to change the laws for animal cruelty? If you know please contact this newspaper (rtnmail@roundtownnews.com) so they can print it. We must say STOP to animal cruelty. Anonymous

Why did you come here?

I CAN’T help feeling that ‘Linde, Almoradi’ has somehow forgotten the reason they came to Spain in the first place when they complain about the fall in property values (Letter of the Week, Issue 13). If property values had risen 50% they would presumably be feeling much happier despite not having any more disposal

income available. Unless you are intending to go back to the UK and live in a nursing home or foolishly came to Spain and took out a mortgage, or feel obliged to bequeath a handsome legacy on your demise, then a rise or fall in property values is of little significance if you remain here. It was the rapid rise in the UK property that led many to

take out second mortgages to purchase holiday homes in Spain. This in turn helped to fuel an unsustainable growth here the consequences of which are now all too clear to see. I came to Spain for the weather and easier life-style. I did not come expecting to make a killing on the housing market. Ken Bethell

Something to be learnt

I WRITE after reading your comments last week from Mrs Vaughan about the problems she has had in hospital recently with her lack of the Spanish language. As everyone’s health is of the utmost importance, I think maybe there is something to be learnt from this lady’s letter. Would you live in any country where you could not speak the language, go into a medical situation and not fully understand what was being explained to you – when this could be a life-threatening situation. Translators are available at a cost but surely everyone’s health is more important. It would appear the only country where translation is free is for immigrants who go to the UK and speak no English – hence, why the UK is in such a terrible mess, overstretched with all services and it is only going to get worse. My late father received a fantastic service from his local hospital when he was ill for the best part of a year. Generally, the Spanish hospitals are second to none in their service and cleanliness, unlike their counterparts in the UKNHS with more reports this week of wards closing to viruses. I trust Mrs Vaughan is now fit and well! Dominique Kirkwood

The perils of the packed lunch

Plastic containers can harbour some nasty food bugs

by Jan Gamm MILLIONS OF workers eat a ‘desk lunch’ every day but nutrition expert Professor Javier Tejedor of ’UNITE’ has warned that plastic containers can harbour some nasty food bugs. The most common source of bacteria is food being kept at the wrong temperature within a plastic container, or that the temperature cannot be retained. Some people prepare their lunch for the following day and keep it refrigerated overnight. However, the food is then taken out of the refrigerator early in the morning but not eaten until midafternoon, allowing bacteria such as e-coli and salmonella to form. Tejedor advises that food should be re-heated to the appropriate temperature before consumption and also ‘single-use’ plastic containers should be discarded afterward, not re-washed for further use.

Fast Track Hypnosis was created when during the troubles of Northern Ireland traditional Hypnotherapy simply wasn’t good enough for the clients walking through my clinic doors. Twelve to fifteen weekly sessions simply prolonged mental agony. I created Fast Track Hypnosis to meld the traditional with the innovative, creating a fast-paced treatment which helped more than fifty thousand people change their lives for good. Back then I dealt with traumatised people who had seen too much and whose minds simply couldn’t cope. At times I still deal with such cases from that era but times and trends have changed. Nowadays, one of the biggest killers in our society is smoking. Once again I adapted Fast Track Hypnosis to deal with the issue quickly and effectively.

Smoking has been a pastime for hundreds of years. Why? We’re creatures of habit and we like to have a crutch. We enjoy having something to do with our hands in times of stress - cigarettes can take on a huge part of your existence. Without them you cannot live and you can’t pass a day without inhaling those toxic fumes. There comes a point where you start to rail against such control. But what happens? You make the decision to quit and then the drugs within the tobacco pull you back. You crave it like a drug addict craves his chemical of choice. It is good that you have made the decision to quit while your health is good and before it is too late. It’s only a matter of time and while you are still smoking you are risking a life of emphysema, cancer and heart disease. Statistics don’t lie and tobacco will kill you. Maybe you’ve looked into expensive inhalators or pills or nasal sprays; gum and patches... and now you’ve thought, what about Hypnosis? What if I said, that within ONE thirty minute session, you could be a non-smoker? Tens of thousands of people have come to me for help in quitting this awful addiction and have succeeded. They can now class themselves as non-smokers - free from the poison. Hypnosis is a period of heightened awareness. It is

a time where your active mind is resting and your subconscious has come to the fore. This is where a lot of issues and problems dwell. It is in the subconscious, that the root can be found and this is where the work has to be done. Suggestion therapy is incredibly powerful, using the mighty force of the mind to implant suggestions and override deeply-rooted beliefs. You will leave your session a non-smoker. And only Fast Track Hypnosis, a treatment unique to my clinics and those of my son Jonathan Gilchrist, can free you from smoking within one, thirty minute session. If you’re ready to change your life Fast Track Hypnosis will help. Alan and his son Jonathan hold their Fast Track Hypnosis sessions in Cabo Roig, Guardarmar and Benidorm. Alan is also the Creator of the Stop Smoking in Under 30 Minutes Fast Track System as featured and proven on TV. Jonathan also does sessions in Spanish as well as English. For an appointment, brochure or free of charge initial consultation, contact Alan Gilchrist on 659 229 408 or Jonathan on 691 784 954. www.alangilchristinspain.com www.hypnosiscostablanca.com www.thegastroband.com

60% of emergencies treated at Torrevieja’s health centres by Keith Nicol TORREVIEJA HOSPITAL ‘Dr. Manuel Garcia Gea’ ended 2012 with a high level of activity, the highest recorded over six years since its launch. The Hospital is managed by Ribera Salud and Asisa and integrated with the public health system of the Generalitat Valenciana and Torrevieja’s Department of Health. Last year, the Hospital’s emergency rooms treated 162,112 visitors, representing a daily average of 442.93 daily emergencies! Of these, 94,237 (59%) were recorded at the city’s health centres, with a daily average of 257.48 emergencies, while the Hospital treated more than 67,875 patients, with a mean average of 185.45 daily emergencies. Torrevieja Hospital has a system of patient care known as Manchester, which uses colours to clas-

sify levels of urgency as mild, moderate or severe, allowing them to adjust the times and improve care in the service. Of those seeking treatment, 31.22% were severely ill patients, 16.53% severe and 52.25% classified as mild. The average wait in the emergency room during 2012 for urgent patients was less than 35 minutes. Moreover, activity in the surgical area was also on the increase, totalling 15,938 during the past year. This figure includes emergency procedures; outpatient surgery and planned interventions requiring hospitalization. The average complexity of surgical procedures is higher than 15% of the surgery performed in other hospitals in the same category, with an average stay significantly lower than other Hospitals, combined with lower rates of com-

plications and readmissions. The number of births is also an important characteristic of the Hospital and during 2012 a total of 1,253 births were performed by the Gynaecology and Obstetrics team, who are committed to provide comprehensive care to women based on personalization of such on an individual basis. Data is also significant in the outpatient area, which has seen a 285,653 total for specialist appointments, with peaks of 1,585 appointments per day and an average of 1,143 cases handled each day. Regarding Primary Health Care, the Hospital treated more than 1,600,000 queries throughout the City’s different health centres and auxiliary offices available to the health area. All in all, a very busy year for Torrevieja’s Health system.

Torrevieja’s Hospital was busier than ever during 2012

Jordan scores dream move

Wish for a good Harvest

TEENAGE FOOTBALLER Jordan Knight has made a dream move to play in the top tier of Spanish football for players aged Under 19. by Jack Troughton The 17-year-old is playing for CD Alcoyano in the Division de Honor Juvenil de Futbol and hoping for a springboard into the big time. Jordan, from Javea, now lives in Alcoy in an apartment provided by the second division side and studies at a local college – both his new club and proud parents Tony and Tracey believe education is important. Playing for Denia’s senior side last year, he was selected to represent Valencia in a competition against the other autonomous communities and joined a squad containing some the of the country’s top clubs like Villareal, Levante and Valencia. Tony said of his son, a six feet two inches centre back, “for a foreign kid to get to this level is absolutely phenomenal. At the moment he is at the top level he can be for his age.” Jordan has lived in Javea since the age of eight and began playing with Javea’s FC Amigos before switching to CD Javea and being spotted by Alicante side Hercules. His rising career continued with spells at clubs like Benidorm

and Kelme before joining Denia – often being driven to training by his parents attempting to do homework in the car. SUN Tony said Jordan was approached by bigger clubs but was told he would not be the first-choice player – he has also turned down moves to Bury and Leicester in the UK, preferring for the moment to stay in the sun. “He has one more year as a ‘juvenil’ and if he can get a full term contract that is the pinnacle but he is in the right place now for coaching and the facilities Alcoyano has.” Tony also played football to a high standard and said he saw Jordan – a Spurs fan – modelling himself on John Terry’s style of play. “He can really ping a ball about.” Jordan now has an agent to look

after his interests and is blossoming on the pitch. Tony said: “I think he was playing and he suddenly realised how good he was – he was always good at studying but as he got older and all these opportunities came along, it suddenly hit him he could do it – before he probably wanted to go to university. “With luck, I think he can go all the way. Once if you had asked me where his future lay, it was always Spain but now there are a lot of Spanish players going to England, so, one day, who knows?”

The food bank – which also has clothing and toys for youngsters - is located in Javea Port Market and run by Peter and Tricia Cox. It is battling to meet the increasing demand on its resources. Jody Kirby, a director of CWM and the founder of the Grant A Wish scheme, had met Tricia when helping put the smile on the face a very ill young girl before Christmas – and when she heard of the Harvest Store successfully appealed to her colleagues for help. Wrapping up warm

CHILDREN LIVING in EMAUS homes are sporting new dressing gowns to beat the winter cold thanks to generous volunteers at Javea’s Roundabout Charity Shop. The shop contacted charity Friends of the Children of EMAUS to say it would like to buy things for the youngsters – and the team was told they would “love” the warm items of clothing. Charity President Carole Saunders said a list of ages and sizes was supplied to the Roundabout team “and they scoured shops and were able to buy more than 80 – it must be well over 1,000€ they have generously spent for us. “The children are absolutely delighted – it is something extra to help keep them warm at home.”

Watts In Britain By

Paul Watts

Happy, happyhappy, happy fork…

RECENTLY I was blathering on about a clever toothbrush that told you how to clean your teeth. Well now it seems there is a fork that tells you how to eat. Thanks goes to eagle-eyed RTN reader Jon in Calpe, for bringing me up to date on these exciting new developments. As I said before, the machines are taking over. Jon saw this in the Times recently: “For just £60, the world’s first ‘smart fork’ can be yours, boosting your cutlery drawer’s IQ while changing your eating habits and making you thin.” Make me thin? Oh, this has got me interested. Over at the Daily Mail their man

Mark Prigg was at a gadget show and has actually tried out this cunning culinary device. Mark reports: “The HAPIfork uses electronic sensors to monitor how much and how fast a user is eating. If they eat too quickly, the fork vibrates, and bright lights flash on its handle.” Hmmm, that sounds fun. I wonder if it forces your hand to drop any unsuitable mouthfuls onto the kitchen floor. If it doesn’t now, it’ll probably come with the next upgrade: the HAPIfork-2. Andrew Carton, el presidento at HAPIlabs, the producers of this ‘object of desire’ says, “Most people eat faster than they should and do not realise that eating too fast isn’t healthy behaviour [and can] negatively affecting things like digestion and weight control.” No kiddin’ Andy? Apparently, his company’s fork will track the duration of a meal, the number of fork servings and the duration of each interval between servings. I wonder if it’ll tell you to eat up all of your greens? Okay here’s the science of scoffing according to HAPIlabs: “Eating too fast, and not chewing long enough leads to poor digestion.” They add: “Every time you bring food from your plate to your mouth [presumably with your fork] it can now be accurately measured and we call that a ‘fork serving’.” Oh for fork’s sake… So, presumably by purchasing a HAPIfork (at the super forktastic price of sixty quid) you can learn better eating habits. The HAPIfork folk tell us that their device measures: how long it takes you to eat your meal; the amount of ‘fork servings’ taken per minute; and the intervals between ‘fork servings’. I wonder if it allows for burping breaks? The HAPIfork “comes with a HAPIlabs app and a

coaching program to help you eat better and change your eating behaviour.” It is expected to go on sale in April, just in time for the Easter gorge. So, whatever next? Clever computerised cutlery (CCC)? You know the sort of thing: knowledgeable knife; super spoon; programmable placemat and maybe even clever condiments. “Oh Watts,” shrieks the salt shaker, “you’ve had your daily intake for the week, I’m not letting you shake out any more…” The HAPIfork concurs, “Roger to that salt-shaker, I will not allow any more salt onto the next ‘fork serving’ amount.” Oh please let me have a bit more salt. “No!” shouts the clever cutlery. A bolt of electricity is sent down the fork, causing pain to my taste buds. “These humans will learn...” Meanwhile, will the digital dessertspoon allow me another slab of treacle tart? Hmmm, as I’ve already had 450 calories with the first slab ‘seconds’ is verboten. “We can’t have you getting overweight, Watts,” the digi-spoon growls. Oh gawd, whatever happened to the good ole days of plastic non-invasive spoons? I growl, “You lot can be replaced.” I start to fume and curse at my cutlery. But hang on a mo what am I doing talking to my cutlery? It is food management gone mad… But I think I’ve found a flaw because what happens if you’re at a finger buffet? Aha, Unless, of course, there’s a HAPIattachment for your finger tip. At the end of the day I think I’ll just rely on my tummy to tell me when I’ve had enough to eat - and save sixty quid into the bargain. I’ll spend that on a nice nosh-up instead; ‘It’s A Small World’ in Albir springs to mind! Take a look at the fork in action at: www.pcworld. com/article/.../smart-fork-says-stop-eating-so-fast.html Watts in Britain, fighting the machines…

Featherstone Rovers train in Torrevieja

The Rovers were the very first Rugby League team to visit the city

by Keith Nicol SPORTS TOURISM is one of the ‘buzz words’ that is going to be bantered around at FITUR this week, in Madrid, where Torrevieja have a major presence on the Costa Blanca Tourism stand. The City of Salt is in the enviable position of not only having one of Europe’s best winter climates and cleanest air quality but also one of the best Sports facilities in Spain, which encompasses Rugby and football fields, padel, font and tennis courts, gymnasiums, weight rooms, athletic track, cricket area, indoor arenas and an Olympic size swimming pool. The new year started on a positive note with the arrival of the Featherstone Rovers Rugby League Club. Thanks to the efforts of local fitness expert and personal trainer Richard Draper, assisted by Torrevieja Tigers Rugby Club, 30 of England’s finest enjoyed the facilities of the area, which included sessions on the beach in Santa Pola and in Orihuela and Elche. The team made the most of the Sports City facilities on Friday January 25 as they became the very first Rugby League team to visit the city, to get away from the cold and snow in England as part of the preparation of this unique sports team, who dedicated the day to fitness training in the gym and to develop their tactical training on the artificial grass pitches, which they had all to themselves. Organiser Richard Draper has been a fitness professional for more years than he

cares to remember and moved his business and family from England to the Costa Blanca last year to develop his boot camp fitness classes and work with the Department of Sport in Torrevieja to bring over teams and groups to use the facilities of the Sports City. The next team to visit the area are Coventry Bears Rugby League team who will travel to Spain early February after a month of preseason training. Rich Draper said: “Coventry Bears are growing in profile and with the development of the club towards Championship one and inclusion in the NCL for next season I thought the club would be a perfect candidate to showcase what we can offer. We have hotels and accommodation available right on the beach with Olympic level gyms and MMA training venues within walking or running distance! The fully 3g Rugby pitch at Torrevieja Sports City is also at our disposal which has hosted World class events. I have already sat down with the clubs coaches and an exciting few days have been planned for the players.” The Bears camp will be featured on Bears TV over the weekend in Alicante so everyone will be able to see how the players progress. “We are really excited about the camp, not many NCL clubs get the chance to utilise something like this and we hope it will help attract more players to the club for 2013 and our journey towards Championship one” said Bears Director Alan Robinson. Winds hit yacht race By Jack Troughton GALES BATTERING the coast ravaged the annual 300 Mile Trophy race last weekend – both delaying the start and devastating the fleet. Bad weather meant a day was lost in the harbour and of 32 yachts due to take part only 11 completed a challenging course slashed to 220 nautical miles by the race committee at Moraira. Organisers say the changes were “unprecedented” in the race’s 12 year history and made this year’s event “unusual and special”. Crews had to wait until the last boat completed the Moraira to Cullera and back course before the outright winner was announced, the committee having to obtain corrected times. However, ‘Plis-Play’ skippered by Vicente Garcia was judged to have been triumphant, the crew taking the trophy and a prize of 3,000€.

CIAJ success story

Positively green calendar

EACH WEEK, Torrevieja’s Youth Centre, the CIAJ becomes a non-Spanish speaking zone for a couple of hours when more than 100 Spanish students take the opportunity to improve their English with eager native English speaking volunteers from the local community.

More than 100 Spanish students take part

by Keith Nicol The program started as an ‘experiment’ on November 4, 2012 and such is the success of the program that program originator Crystal East is now looking for a few more volunteers to enjoy a couple of hours of intercambio with our Spanish hosts. On Tuesday, the centre was visited by Councillor for Foreigners and Education, Rosario Martinez and the Director of the Foreign Residents Office, Graham knight to see for themselves how the initiative is working. More than seventy Spanish students had dropped in on Tuesday morning along with a dozen native English speakers, who hail from the British Isles, Canada, USA, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and elsewhere. It’s a fun event, where three to five Spanish speakers just sit and chat,

about any topic that comes to mind, to help improve their conversational English. Crystal noted that “For many of the Spanish, it’s the very first time that they have had a real conversation with an English speaker. Up until now, they have only been exposed to structured English classes. For some of our English volunteers and the Spanish, it’s the very first time that they have had a conversation and exchanged different viewpoints, in a relaxed and casual atmosphere. The English Conversation classes are still open to Spanish or those wishing to learn English as a Second Language but to join this activity, it is necessary to have an intermediate level of English. That’s the only requirement. The courses are free and happen four times a week, just closing for Red Days and during the holiday months of July and August. Crystal said

23

that there are about forty volunteers who hardly ever miss a session but that she is always looking for more volunteers, who would be warmly welcomed into this very friendly environment. The Centre for Information and Youth Animation is located on Torrevieja’s seafront, close to the Old Man of the Sea Monument, at Paseo Juan Aparicio Number 5, beside Burger King and the Cantina Cafe. Those who would like to offer their services as a volunteer English teacher, for these conversational classes, should visit during one of the scheduled class times for more information, send an email to Crystal at crystaleast16@yahoo.co.uk or call her on 644 136 711 or 965 703 310. The conversation classes are available Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 to 12:00 noon and Wednesday and Thursday from 5:00pm to 6:00pm.

By Jack Troughton TALENTED YOUNGSTERS created pictures to illustrate a Costa Blanca town hall’s calendar highlighting international environmental days. Nearly 1,000 Calpe schoolchildren entered an art competition and the best pictures were used on the cover and for each month of the ‘green’ calendar. Competition winners were pictured with Councillor Carole Saunders (back row, far right) after receiving their prizes last weekend. All entries made up an exhibition at Calpe’s Casa del Cultura and Mrs Saunders explained he calendar included global environmental celebrations such as international Day of the Earth; International Day for Water and International Day for the Ozone Layer – as well as important health day, including International Cancer Day. She said unforeseen delays meant the calendar was delayed in publication but it was now available from the town hall. “It does look wonderful although we were a little late in getting it out. “One of the best entries was by an autistic child aged 14 at the Gargasindi School, while the youngest winner was aged just threeyears-old.”

Neater Pool Guardian: Your ‘seat belt’ in the garden ONE DAY in the not-too-distant future we will look back on today’s attitude toward swimming pool safety fences with the same bewildered amazement that we now look back on the seatbelt laws of the 1970s. This became apparent to me during a conversation I was having with my teenage son and his friends in the car. I was explaining how huge the ‘clunkclick every trip’ seatbelt campaign was. These teenagers were absolutely astounded that a device that had such proven life-saving benefits with no adverse effects was not compulsory to wear. Not only that, but car manufacturers were not initially obliged to install them, they were an ‘option’ like aircon and tinted windows and even after their installation became compulsory wearing them was optional. In 1979 a motion in Parliament was defeated even though medical evidence suggested that making the wearing of seat belts compulsory

would save over 1,000 lives and prevent over 10,000 injuries a year: the law did not change until 1987. In Spain over the last 10 years, an average of 100 infants drowned each year in pools. For each death there have been 2,000 reported accidents that needed hospital admission ranging from routine check-ups to brain injury due to oxygen deficiency. Most of the victims of these accidents fit the following profile: a child who is being supervised by one-or-more adults who think he/she is somewhere else, perfectly safe, nowhere near the pool. Installing a Neater Pool Guardian will give you the peace of mind of knowing that even if you are wrong about where your child is, they are still safe from the pool. Stormy weather WIND STORMS throughout the week caused further chaos throughout the region with gusts exceeding 90mph recorded at El Altet and extensive damage to public buildings and private residences reported. In one school a French class was alarmed to see the roof lift and begin to flap like a sail. One student and the teacher managed to pounce on the blackboard before it flew out of the hole in the ceiling! In

Alicante a school had to be evacuated when a large crane became unstable overhead and other schools were closed due to falling palms. Schools with prefabricated classrooms have been particularly affected. Trees, exterior walls and billboards littered the roads as emergency services did their best to clear the debris. Meanwhile insurance companies are inundated with claims for extensive damage to property.

Maximising spring colour by

Clodagh & Dick Handscombe Practical gardeners and authors

ALTHOUGH IT is winter it is worth looking forward to the Spring, which is the first time in the year when we can achieve a simultaneous explosion of colour from trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and bulbs. Spring in Spanish gardens is essentially the period from March to the end of May and often starts seriously with the flowering of the Judas or Love tree with its bright blood coloured flowers oozing out of the branches before any leaves appear. Yes there have been earlier spring-like signs such as the flowering of almonds and daffodils. But these only raise false hopes of warmer Spring weather as cold snowy weather often comes after the almond blossom of late December to February. Establishing a wonderful Spring garden takes a few years so what should we consider planting once the frosts are past - or sooner if you have never had a frost. FLOWERING TREES Early spring flowering: White and pink blossoms appear on fruit trees - deciduous trees such as pears, quince, cherry and apricots. But watch out. Apricots are normally the first to flower and often suffer damage from late wintry storms. March/April is also the main season for orange blossom. Plant a few, or even just one, evergreen orange, mandarin and lemon tree in the garden and the spring air will be filled with the sweet scent of the profuse hatch of white flowers. Plant a ‘Luna’ lemon and you

can achieve a similar effect every six or eight weeks of the year, but on a smaller scale. LATE SPRING FLOWERING As the temperatures warm up the more spectacular trees such as the callistemon (bottle brush tree), oleander, jacaranda, magnolia, schinus (mock pepper tree),the spring flowering mimosa, philadelphus ( mock orange), viburnum, the miniature and full size waxy red flowered pomegranate and showy tamarisk start to flower. SHRUBS Camellias of all colours; yellow brooms; low growing purple lantanas and plumbago are amongst the earliest to flower, followed by bougainvillas; solanums; wisteria; honeysuckle; hibiscus; the taller red, orange and yellow lantanas; rock roses and of course roses if you have a suitable soil rich in humus and water retaining. Although only in white or whitish pink, one has to plant a jasmine for the exotic scent. Plant one adjacent to the entrance gate or back door as Spaniards do. PERENNIALS A bed of perennials or plants mixed in with shrubs can give a very colourful, long lasting display. Try planting the elegant bird of paradise flower (strelitzia), echium with its impressive leaves and spires of blue or white flowers, purple red and yellow margaritas, brilliant coloured rudbeckias, valerian with continuous pink flowerings, and of course geraniums. But do ensure that you spray them against the dreaded geranium moth the day you purchase them and then every ten days. At the front of beds, around ponds, on the top of walls or in rockeries add low growing plants such as the vividly coloured gazanias, mesembryanthemums and pinks for a carpet of flowers. If you want something tall and spectacular plant a few agaves

attenuate and wait patiently for them to flower. It will take a few years but be worth the wait. In the herb garden rosemary, thyme, sage and rue will probably be in flower. If you have succulents on a rockery or as specimens in terrace pots some are sure to be in flower. Others will have already finished flowering or will follow on later. ANNUALS As annuals appear in the nurseries, start to plant in window boxes, hanging baskets and beds but only if you are able to water them daily. They are fast growing and thirsty plants with shallow roots. They need more attention than any other group of plants in the Spanish garden. One can also sow seeds such as candy tuft, nasturtiums, poppies, marigolds, the multicoloured large or small flowered zinnias and sweet peas directly into the garden. We plant some sweet peas mixed in with other plants in the flower garden but our main planting is in our vegetable garden. BULBS, CORMS AND RHIZOMES Bulbs and rhizomes planted in pots, containers and corners of the garden can be attractive ingredients in the Spring display. If you have gaps in the garden or are spending the winter laying out a new garden and improving the soil, March and April are good times to make plantings. Roots will have time to establish themselves before the hotter days of early summer... Achieving a colourful spring garden will take time but all your efforts will be rewarded for many years to come. For those with gardens the book ‘Your Garden on Spain - From Planning to Planting and Maintenance’ can be an essential guide. If you are limited to the windowsills, balconies and terraces of an apartment an investment in ‘Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style’ can speed your conversion of dead spaces into enviable outdoor living spaces.

money How to profit from the falling pound 1 - 7 february 2013

by

Christina Brady

Regional Manager of Blacktower Costa Blanca

AFTER A dreadful start to 2013 the British pound fell to its weakest level in 13 month against the Euro, the pound had the poorest start to a year against the single currency since it was introduced in 1999, it has depreciated 5.1% since 31st December. The drop of the Sterling was emphasised by Carney’s comments, who will become governor of the Bank of England in July 2013, saying central banks around the world have room to ease monetary policy further if needed. The market interpretation is that Carney will be a dovish governor, encouraging more easing’s than his predecessors. With bad economic reports out of the UK, especially the GDP data, fears of a triple recession and the UK’s prized AAA rating at risk Sterling is likely to remain under pressure for the foreseeable future. The view is that the British Government will do little to stop Sterling depreciating: while it spells bad news for holidaymakers and retirees living aboard on Sterling pensions

29

and it makes imports more expensive, cheap sterling is good for the economy. Some analysts are predicting sterling will fall as much as 20pc in 2013. To make money at this time people need to invest some of their portfolio in Equity funds investing in the US and European markets as these will receive dividends from the underlying companies in their local currencies. Proud to be associated with Grant a Wish

Sending house sale proceeds to the UK

by

Kevin Wright

Account Manager, Moneycorp

I AM in the process of selling my house in Spain and sending the money back to the UK in exchange for Sterling. Firstly, what is the best way to achieve the most Sterling for my money and secondly, is there any way I can ascertain exactly how much Sterling I will have available even though completion is six weeks away? This question is interesting because when using a Spanish bank to exchange the Euros to Sterling it is not only the rate but also the fees that have to be considered. Typically, charges can be up to 1% for simply depositing the draft from the notary and transferring the Euros out. Add to this the rate of exchange and you really could be losing out. Using a currency company such as Moneycorp is a way to ensure that you are receiving the most competitive exchange rate. However, we can also save client’s money on the bank fees, definitely ensuring more Sterling arrives into your UK bank account. As an example, the additional Sterling generated on a property sale price of 200,000€ could be as much as £4,500 by using Moneycorp instead of your Spanish bank. For the second part of your question there is of course no way of predicting at what level the £/€ rate will be in six weeks’ time. However, relating

back to a previous question on the timing of transfers, Moneycorp does have an option that can help: Once your property is sold and the 10% deposit secured you are able fix the exchange rate for delivery of the Sterling at a later date (to coincide with your completion). Forward contracts protect against adverse currency movements and can be used to lock into favourable exchange rates. This will also mean that you will know to the exact penny the Sterling amount you will receive after completion. The process is simple and requires only a small deposit as the balance is payable once you have the proceeds of the sale. Given that the € / £ rate is favourable at the moment this is certainly something to consider and is not available through your bank. For further information on the range of services discussed and guidance when selling your Spanish property please see www.moneycorp.com/roundtownnews or call 0034 902 887243.

Serve a foreign claim document: Court Petition in Spain

Carlos Baos I AM getting a divorce in the UK. My solicitors and I are looking of White & Baos Abogados

English & Spanish Solicitors

to serve an individual with a Divorce Petition personally, and then complete an affidavit of service. The individual lives in the Alicante area. How this can be done? What is the best way to do it? In Spain it is the courts themselves that serve the claim to the respondents, sometimes with the help of the police, etc. Therefore in Spain we do not have personal servers as in other countries such as the UK etc. If you want to serve a foreign court case document or claim (that is not handled by a Spanish Court) to an individual you must know that there are essentially different ways to do so. It is important to check that the Court dealing with the case will accept them, before deciding which option to use: 1. We can serve by using a Spanish Public Notary: This is the most formal

option but normally the costs are higher, due to notary fees which could be high depending on whether 1 or 2 notaries must act; the number of pages; and if the notary is in the same area as the person to be served… 2. We, as Spanish Lawyers, could send to the respondents a registered letter. In these cases the Post Office will confirm the letter’s dated receipt and by whom, and also the exact wording of the letter, certifying a copy of it. This could be a good option. However, it is possible that it could be served to someone other than the person that we want and that could be a problem. 3 .We can travel and serve the

document ourselves, but we do not recommend this option as it could be expensive and it is not the normal way to proceed in Spain. There are other options that could be explored. We know that some British people are acting in Spain as ‘process servers’. Also, you can ask the Court in your country to request the assistance of a Spanish court (international letter rogatory) in order to serve the document, but you will probably be asked to translate the claim into Spanish, and it could take longer. Should any reader be in this situation or similar please do not hesitate to contact us and the appropriate advice will be provided.

Duke of Palma removed from royal website THE SPANISH royal family continues to disassociate itself from the Infanta Cristina’s husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, Duke of Palma, by removing his profile from the royal website www.casareal.es The decision to take further steps to isolate the Casa del Rey from the Duke was made after another series of damaging emails was released this week connected with his former business partner Diego Torres. The removal of the Duke from the royal website is intended to widen the gap between the royal institution and the Duke’s alleged fraudulent activities.

Dividends: For both income and capital growth By Tom Elliott, global strategist: JP Morgan HIGH DIVIDEND paying stocks offer two things to the investor: a source of income that currently exceeds that available from US, UK and core Eurozone government bond markets, and, secondly, a valuable source of returns in an environment of uncertain capital growth. For the income seeker, dividends can provide an attractive source of regular income payments that have the potential to rise in line with increases in inflation. For the capital growth seeker, it is dividend growth and the reinvestment of dividends that often provides stock market investors with the greatest proportion of their overall long-term return.

DIVIDENDS FOR THE INCOME SEEKER Investors looking for income have traditionally sought the security of risk-free government bond markets. But with yields on the most favoured government bonds currently below inflation, many income seekers are today looking to the equity market to provide an attractive level of income. The traditional relationship between equities and government bonds, which existed in all the major markets in previous decades, was for the equity dividend yield to be lower than the government bond yield, to compensate for the capital gain offered by holding equities. But this relationship has been inverted – in some cases sharply – in recent years. Income from government bonds in those markets viewed as the safest is at ultra low

levels because of the currently prolonged period of low growth. However, this environment can be positive for higher yielding equities. First, dividend paying stocks are supported by strong demand given the lack of attractive alternative income sources. Second, high dividend paying stocks are often found in the defensive sectors most able to withstand negative economic shocks. DIVIDENDS FOR CAPITAL GROWTH Meanwhile, for investors seeking capital growth, dividend stocks are also appealing. The power of compounding means that reinvesting dividends over a sustained period provides a powerful boost to total returns. Over the past decade, for example,

the return on the MSCI World Value Index (a good proxy for high dividend stocks) was 47% without reinvested dividends, but 105% if dividends were reinvested (source: Factset, data to 30 November 2012). Dividends have also been the main driver of market returns over the long term. In each decade since the 1920s, dividends have contributed positively to investors’ returns, providing stability to portfolios and helping to limit losses when markets are falling (source: Factset, Standard & Poor’s). Dividend-paying stocks can therefore play a dual role in a portfolio: to provide income, particularly in a world of very low interest rates and core government bond yields, and to provide a valuable source of total return over long investment horizons.

Mis-sold bank products IT PERHAPS comes as no surprise that banks are being held to account for some of the unprofessional ways they have tried to part by customers from their money in the past. Individuals are increasingly realising that the methods used to convince them to buy bank Customer Care products were not always legitimate. For at Ábaco example, there are cases where banks designed, marketed and sold a number of products to make themselves ‘easy’ money.

Pablo Arteaga

One example are the mortgage ‘clips’ or ‘swaps’ offered to non-professional investors as a simpleto-understand product similar to an insurance policy. They were sold as an insurance to protect the client in case the Euribor went up over a certain rate agreed between the bank and the client. The rate was often fixed at 5%. If it went above this rate the bank would pay the difference or the mortgage would remain at the lower, more stable amount. People were sold this product in spite of the fact that for the last ten years, interest rates have always been held between 2 and 5%. Knowing this, banks still asked clients to swap their variable rate for a fixed rate of 5.5% which they knew the Euribor would never reach, the result being that the bank was bound to profit from this arrangement. Clients were not informed about the amount of money they would need to pay out if they

wished to cancel the policy before it was due to expire. Clients expecting to pay 500€ to 1,000€ in settlement were suddenly faced with a bill of 30,000€ to 40,000€. People were left with a product that they had no real need for and from which they could not wriggle free. In some cases products intended for speculators had been sold to individuals with little to no financial knowledge. With time these unwitting speculators have realised that they handed over their savings in good faith to buy a product with little stability. WHAT YOU CAN DO There is hope. On 5th March 2012 a judge in Alicante declared the contract between a bank and its customer to be null and void. This led to a flood of new cases being tried in court with customers taking legal action against their banks. And in many of these cases the customers are winning. These judges in Spain have recognised the false impressions which banks were giving at the time and that this did not comply with the requirement for transparency. If you believe you have been mis-sold a product like the mortgage ‘clip’ you can get in touch with our legal department who will check the situation for you. We can inform you of your rights and recover capital in those cases where the pitch did not reflect the true nature of the product.

Sail with style and elegance

TRAVELLERS CAN sit back and enjoy a little cruise control on the modern and luxurious MSC Splendida and a trip around the Mediterranean this spring and early summer. By Jack Troughton The ship offers passengers cutting edge technology combined with the exceptional comfort expected by passengers taking in a little life on the ocean wave. Once almost exclusively for the well-heeled or a ‘once in a lifetime’ trip, the cruise experience is now an affordable holiday – a great way to return to life on board or dip a toe in the water to discover a new experience. RTN together with Gandia Tours are offering four cruises on MSC Splendida in May and June, all at unbeatable prices – although early booking is strongly advised as cabins are limited. The ship sails from Valencia on 7th May, 14th May, 4th June and 11th June. The trip costs 360€ - except for 14th May at 420€ - plus 180€ tax. Transfers are included in the price and with pick-up points along the coast, passengers will effectively be leaving from their own door step. Sailing from Valencia, she puts in to Tunis, Rome, Genova, Marseille, Barcelona, and finally drops anchor again in Valencia. VALUE And all four cruises provide excellent value – the whole

cruise experience now works out cheaper than staying in a hotel, yet the standards on ship are much higher. The journey is on a full board basis – although it excludes drinks, an optional drinks package can be reserved - and works out at around 50€ a day. The Splendida came into service in 2009, her planned name was changed by MSC to reflect her “beauty and elegance” and she was officially christened in Barcelona by the Hollywood superstar Sophia Loren. The ship offers passengers the highest quality of service and is considered to be the very best cruise ship sailing from Valencia. Her Mediterranean itinerary allows everyone to broaden their horizons with a variety of places to visit and attractive optional excursions are available at every port of call. And at Gandia Tours there are no doubts over the fantastic value the four MSC Splendida trips represent. “The cruise is offered at an absolutely excellent price – it works out at 50€ a day and it is not even necessary to row!” For more information or to reserve a berth, call Gandia Tours on 96 610 6872 Monday to Friday between 9.30am and 1.30pm and 4pm and 7.30pm.

Life tech

with Aunty Virus

Email auntyvirus@roundtownnews.com

Email attachments HI AUNTY: Since Hotmail changed to outlook I cannot add animated clipart to my emails to cheer them up. I have tried various things like clearing my cache, temporary folders etc. and loading Google chrome but with that I cannot bring up my hotmail so I go back to my Google homepage and even using my Gmail the problem is still there - all I get when I copy and paste is a square with a small red cross inside and the name of the clipart. George

Aunty says: Directly ‘copying and pasting’ clip art into outlook.com email is no longer available. Presumably this is to try to stop spamming, and viruses

from being sent masquerading as ‘safe pictures!’ However, you can still add images to an email. Open outlook.com and Start a new email. Under ‘Options’, select ‘Edit in HTML’ Type your message. But unless you know how HTML works, you may not be able to change fonts, colours, or sizes of the text. To add an image or clip art simply add the line: <img src=”urlofimage”> where ‘urlofimage’ is the url or web address of the image you want to include. This image must already be on the internet. so <img src=” http://www. roundtownnews.com/templates/ja_ nex/themes/blue/images/logo.png”>

will add the RTN logo to your email. If you want to add your own images, then you must find a ‘cloudstore’ for your images. A site like Photobucket allows you to store your images online. You simply use an URL from your store on Photobucket as your urlofimage in your emails.

No email program HI AUNTY: When I try to send something from my documents as an attachment to an email, a message comes up as follows: ‘There is no email program associated to perform the requested action, please install an email program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel’. In Default Programs the suggestion is: ‘To set a program as the default for all file types and protocols it can open, click the program and then click Set as default’. The problem is, email does not appear as a program. Les.

Aunty says: The problem is exactly what is says - the PC cannot find an email program to send the attachments to. It is looking for a program like Outlook, or Outlook Express, or Incredimail to send the attachment to. The method you are trying (i.e. right click send to) will not work if you use Hotmail, or Gmail, or Yahoo mail or other ‘web based’ email systems - unless you use a program called Affixa which makes a link between ‘sent to mail recipient’ and your webmail system. If you are using a web based email system, when you create your messages you need to click the attachment button, and locate and the attachment.

Upgrading to Google Chrome HI AUNTY, I am using Google for all of my emails, and I am now getting a message every time that I switch on, that I need to upgrade to Google Chrome, but every time that I try I receive the following message: ‘Your profile could not be opened correctly, some features may be unavailable. Please check that the profile exists and you have permission to read and write its contents’. I really want to use Google Chrome but I cannot get round this annoying message: any help that you can give me would be appreciated. Colin Aunty says: This error message is caused by an error in your user profile in Chrome. There is apparently a solution, which involves deleting your current profile. (Note: This may delete any bookmarks that have been imported into Chrome.) WINDOWS 7 1. Quit Google Chrome. 2. Open Computer. 3. Navigate to C:\Users\ {username}\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\ 4. Delete the file named ‘Web Data’ 5. Start Google Chrome and the error should be gone. WINDOWS XP 1. Quit Google Chrome. 2. Open Computer. 3. Turn on Show Hidden Files and Folders in Folder Options in Windows Explorer. 4. Navigate to: C:\Documents and Settings\ {username}\Local Settings\ Application Data\Google\ Chrome\User Data\ 5. Delete the file named “Web Data” 6. Start Google Chrome and the error should be gone. Hopefully this will delete the corrupt profile, and when you reopen chrome a new profile will be created.

Gadget Inspector Investigates:

Epson Expression Home Small-In-One Printer All-In-One Printers have been around a few years now, they are designed to replace the need to have separate printers and scanners - providing the functions of a printer, scanner and copier altogether in one handy compact package. And with the advent of wireless networks came the ability to connect via WiFi, no need for trailing cables and having to place the device close to a host computer – the device only needs to be sited near a power supply and within range of the relevant wireless router to be available to all of the computers connected to that network. Today we´re going to be looking at the Epson Expression Home XP-305 All-In-One Printer, referred to rather cheekily by the manufacturers as a ‘Small-In-One’ due to its very compact 390x300x145mm dimensions and weighing in at a lithe 4.2 kg. The Epson was designed specifically for users who are purchasing a WiFi printer for the first time as it is self-configuring straight out of the box, and requires no complicated knowledge of your network or it´s settings. Automatic set-up is compatible with computers running Windows 7, Windows Vista or Mac OS. It should be noted that a USB cable (which is not supplied) will be required for initial WiFi set-up for Windows XP users. The Epson Expression Home XP-305 can handle print resolutions up to 5760 x 1440 dots per inch with printing speeds of 33 pages / min for black and white and 15 pages / min for colour. The feeder tray can hold up to a 100 A4 sheets, so plenty of capacity there. The printer uses the new Claria Home Ink cartridges designed to give affordable reliable printing and to produce crisp, clear text documents and glossy lab-quality photos. Cartridges can also be replaced individually so you only need replace the empty one. Scanning and copying is handled by a 1200x2400 dot per inch resolution contact image sensor flatbed scanner which can handle documents, photos, magazines or any other printed matter. And to complete the picture the Expression Home XP305 comes with a copy of Abbyy FinerReader optical character recognition software and utility/driver software with Windows, OS X (Mac) and even Linux support.

The Epson Expression Home XP-305 features Epson Connect which allows users to quickly and easily print documents and photos wirelessly directly from smartphones and tablet PCs. Additionally you can print from anywhere in the world by emailing documents and photos directly to the printer. Google Cloud Print is also supported and allows users to print on the go from a smartphone or computer using the service. The Epson Expression Home XP-305 also comes with a 3.6cm colour LCD screen and accompanying memory card slot which allows printing directly from memory cards. Los Costaleros and Semana Santa By Keith Nicol SEMANA SANTA, the Easter processions take place during the last week of March 2013 and plans are already underway in Torrevieja for all Los Costaleros to assemble for the first of their practice sessions, prior to them carrying the huge paso of Jesus in the Garden of Olives through the streets of the City on the first Monday of the Easter Processions. The first get together was on Thursday 21st February staring at 7.30 pm in the hall adjoining the Santa Semana Museum, with the first actual practice taking place on Thursday 28th February followed by the two subsequent Thursdays, the 7th and 14th of March. If there are any strong men who would like to become part of this proud band of International Costaleros, you are asked to please contact David McLachlan at davidmacspain@ yahoo.co.uk who can advise you of their vacancies, and requirements. All members, old and new are reminded to not show up in training shoes but to wear the shoes you will be wearing in the processions themselves, in order that placement on the paso can be as accurate as possible. The two processions in which the International Cofradia takes part are on Monday 25th March and Friday 29th of March. Normally every year Los Costaleros look for a few new members to boost the ranks as with such a large group of men there have always been a number who can no longer carry for one reason or another, age being the major factor! Being allowed to participate in the Holy week processions by carrying the paso is a great privilege and an honour. The International Cofradia has always set the very highest of standard during the two processions it takes part in each year, which has been favourably commented on in the past. You are also joining a very friendly supportive group of people who enjoy social occasions together as part of the brotherhood. The main event is held on Good Friday, the longest procession, which involves the participation of more than 2,500 people, including Los Costaleros. It starts early, around 7.00pm, well before the sun sets and has been known to finish

The Easter processions take place during the last week of March 2013

Life horoscopes Aggressive Mars is whispering in your ear just as a stoic Mercury opens up the need to have dialogue about recent events. Nothing will be achieved by silence, and there is everything to be gained by bringing all concerned together; since your aims are the same and it is only your method of approach which is at question.

It is a very flirty Venus who stirs emotions and attracts lust this week. As Aquarian energies kick in there is a free reign to put things in order and to remove suspicions, and then you have to put your inner self in order to make the changes due. Things do not have to be this complicated so make things more easy on yourself. Jupiter remains Direct and is sending a strong blessing to ease your conscious. It would appear that there is some unfinished business and that you are currently dreading conflict that a confrontation will undoubtedly bring. Sometimes, too, you have to take the rough with the smooth and stand up for your beliefs. Given that you didn’t want to get involved in the first place something in a current matter has reflected badly on you. You should follow your own judgement and bring all this to a satisfactory conclusion, and then just walk away without looking back, and your head held high. It is your correct version of the truth that upsets some people. Finely tuned, you have quite rightly chosen to let bygones be bygones in a personal matter. There are somethings better not to know, but you are tired of excuses and the manipulating forces of others. Making a fresh start is moving on, not running away, and with the issue formally resolved you can take a well deserved breather. Mercury, Neptune and Mars are reacting regarding your current position. You have put so much into a ongoing project that you should be rewarded and take your rightful slice of the pie. However there are others who cannot see the wood for the trees and they have brought a conflict of issues when patient and resourceful completion is what’s needed. Venus is attracted to the current Aquarian climate and getting close to Mercury in Pisces. There is a dilemma to be sorted as you have to make a difficult decision to allow continuity, and yet be true to your own destiny in the bargain. Forget the advice of others and go for a solution that’s practical and inspiring for all involved. Mars and Pisces are slowing things down so that hard working Planet Mercury can do what has to be done for the best right now. There are changes in place that will best explain your actions and your reaction to something that has caused confusion amongst others yet has left you knowing who your friends really are. Take pride in the reward you deserve for keeping a lid on things. Patience has been rewarded, and you can be sure that Jupiter has brought about some positive energies, even though some indecisive moments are best explained away as Geminian hesitation and stalling for the best deal on offer. Pluto is analytical and setting the scene for further work you have to do. There needs to be a better balance between your inner energies and what really does inspire you. Currently being the hero puts you in good stead, but you can see the writing on the wall, and just where all this could take you. Spurred on by the positive energies of a loving Venus there is currently a spring in your step and an ache in your soul best resolved by being very practical about an affair of the heart. You are poised and open, so do not let the pain of the past take you from what could be your best foot forward, or allow compromise to rear an ugly head. Multiple connections throughout this week bring you to your senses. With Cosmic action bringing Mars, Mercury and Neptune into line there is no doubt that you have the green flag and that from now onwards only you can hold yourself back. You have to be sure, but just what do you need to make things happen?

The World is full of souls. Many of us are driven by the soul energy that emanates from the Spiritual Centre of our bodies. A few work with the significant power that only the soul can bring us; whilst even fewer tune into their souls to make the difference to their levels of enlightenment. The Seat of the soul is said to be seated in the area of the Solar Plexus and many of us have inherited a soul somewhere along the line, and are regarded as old souls as a result. There should be no fear surrounding the accolade brought about by having a soul which has lived before. It is indeed rather wonderful trying to ascertain when and where and how we lived and what was recorded in our soul energy of the time. So too must we wonder if our current soul will outlive us at the next passing on, and where will it move on to? The sad thing about the soulless is that they have no faith, no belief and no real future. Here the soul has not had the chance to bear witness to past events. The soul and its energies are merely not understood and that’s where the continuity fades away. However each and every soul has a starting point and a new soul born into a body today may travel onwards in perpetuity if it is so inclined; becoming an old soul in future projections of time and motion. Those with highly developed souls will be adept at sending love through both the major channels of the heart and the soul. They will have soulmates that will punctuate their lives throughout the current

lifetime, and affairs of the heart that will allow them the chance to show their desire and their passion for life to those who are able to enter into the heart chakra. As such they will use both psychic centres of love communication, and weave a pattern of love and light throughout a lifetime. Old Souls need to have a connection to a partner by heart and soul. Yes, it is fine to have an affair of the heart, and to love in this way is never ever wrong, especially as we live in a World of Terrorism, hatred and Greed. But long term and an Old Soul will relive, re structure and bond within the comfort of a parallel soul, old or new. Love energy is therefore generated between heart and soul, and this powerful attraction forges a bond of love and positive energies. Just lately I have seen so many babies born into this World with old souls. You can see it in the way they respond; returning into infancy once more with clear ideas of what they will achieve and where they are going. They speak promptly and learn to read in a flash, and they are prepared to start once more a chain of events that will one day ask them to release their souls once more in the glorious process that is development. In this the young old souls are reliving a promise, perpetuating the ageless criteria of the endless soul and its importance in the journey of life. Gathering history and fuelled often by flashbacks into what was the past, they connect to a future whereby their Spiritual past was the catalyst into their rebirth in the here and now….. and they have work to do, in this, the blueprint of yet another life.

Kenny, many people have said that my toddler son is an old soul. I feel he has special powers but can’t quite put my finger on it. What is an old soul anyway? Helen de V. I dedicate my article this week to you and your son. An Old Soul has lived before, and brings back past energies and experiences in this, the re birth into another life. I myself am a very Old Soul, with a great love of the history my soul has interpreted from the past and from a variety of lives in different places and at different times. Be prepared to see your son speak of things he may have no experience of, and so too in general, wait that his spiritual development makes him very special. If you can, start to keep a Diary to record your son’s journey on all levels… it will be a fascinating one for sure!

Cosmic actions bring changes and surprises just when and where they are needed in the current scheme of things. Whatever you do be responsible and though you may be currently off on a wing and a prayer, nobody knows it!

Rosa paints the town pink

ONE OF Spain’s true superstars of the future performed in Torrevieja last week. Rosa Lopez. by Keith Nicol Remember the name because if it’s not known to you already, within a year or two, it certainly will be. The performance in Torrevieja was simply spectacular, putting on a fantastic show backed by her group of tight musicians, backing vocalists and a ‘choir’ of audience members who sang along with all the songs, or at least those which she sang in Spanish! Rosa is a true international artist who over the last decade has perfected her English, on the night performing a number of songs flawlessly in her second language, to the delight of the

few International spectators, that made up more than 600, in the audience. Rosa filled the theater with her powerful voice for nearly two hours, singing songs from her latest album, popular tunes from her favourite English speaking artists such as Gladys Knight and Roberta Flack and even with some songs that made her famous through her passage to wining the TV show that catapulted her to fame. She ended her show with the audience on their feet and dancing in the aisles and at the front of the stage with her song for Europe ‘Celebration’ which she sang for Spain in Eurovision 2002.

During the performance, many audience members approached the stage to give her gifts and kisses and she beckoned the audience to come closer to the stage, to give kisses, to hold her hand, to take flowers or simply feel close to this fabulous artist. The show lasted nearly two hours and afterwards the singer did not hesitate to stay at the buffet in the theater, handing out autographs, kisses and smiles to over two hundred fans who waited for over an hour to meet her. This is an artist that needs no adjectives to be a future superstar. Remember her name: Rosa.

Spooning in Rojales by Keith Nicol DO YOU enjoy ‘spooning’, eating with a spoon, rather than a knife and fork or your fingers, that is. Well, Rojales Town hall has the event for you; their first Gastronomic event that allows you to eat a luscious meal, with a spoon! It works as follows: every day a special traditional spoon menu for 15€ in one of the participating restaurant. Each Restaurant has a designated Spoon Day and a menu to match. No need to cut anything as the menus are specifically designed for the event. The food is served in covered dishes and the menus are all related to enjoying life. They are hearty and comforting, and are a guarantee that this is home cook-

ing at its best, with many of the meals being designed around the traditional Spanish kitchen as it was before. Over the passage of time, spoon foods, have become a real pleasure for the palate of those who belong to the new generations, who did not grow up with home cooking, but processed and fast food menus. Establishments taking part include the Hotel La Laguna (the first one but served yesterday, Thursday), Restaurante Sierra Golf who have their menu today, Friday, Restaurante Josemar, Cervecería Spirit, Tu Cantina, Mesón la Noria, Tasca de Miguel, Casa Antonio, Amstelería, Restaurante Hierro Uno and the last day of the event, on Valentine’s Day no less, at the Don Carlos in Quesada.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Step by Step Spanish - 17 “

For now we are simply going to look at positive commands to someone in the familiar singular form (also known as the “tú” form). This is the form being yelled at that recalcitrant infant on the beach.

IF YOU have ever spent any time in the presence of a Spanish family with children you will have heard all sorts of instructions being said, shouted or screamed, including the ever popular “¡¡ven aquí!!” along with “dámelo”, “póntelo” “quítatelo” “comelo” and a whole range of other orders besides. In grammar terms these are called “imperatives” which simply means that they are commands. The examples above mean “Come here”, “give it to me”, “put it on”, “take it off” and “eat it” (“it” not referring to the same thing of course!) Everyday language is full of orders and instructions and of course they are particularly important where children are involved. We are inclined to be a little wordier in English and give orders in a more roundabout way - “Would you come here please?” and so on – but the effect is the same. In English we understand the order by the tone of voice whatever the words actually are, whereas in Spanish the order is simply said more directly “Come here!” – “Ven aquí”. This imperative form is quite straightforward in English – we just take the verb and say it without changing it in any way – “Give” “Go” “Play” “Stop”. Of course we usually add other words to make the orders more meaningful – “Give it to me” “Go away” “Play nicely” “stop cheating” etc. but the basic grammar is very simple. In Spanish unfortunately the imperative is

quite a lot more complicated as it varies according to whom we are speaking. The form of the word is different depending on whether we are addressing one individual or more than one, and whether we are being formal or informal. There’s also a difference between whether the order is positive (telling someone to do something) or negative (telling someone not to do something) so clearly we have to take this whole subject very slowly. For now we are simply going to look at positive commands to someone in the familiar singular form (also known as the “tú” form). This is the form being yelled at that recalcitrant infant on the beach. With one or two very common exceptions, the vast majority of these positive, singular, familiar orders use the same form of the verb as the third person singular in the present tense. For example, let’s take

the verb “abrir” meaning “to open”. The third person singular present tense form is “abre” (he, she or it opens). We use exactly the same form “abre” to express a familiar order. The dentist might order you to “abre la boca” (open your mouth). Someone might tell you to “abre la ventana” (open the window) and a plumber might order you to “abre el grifo” (open – that is “turn on” - the tap). Going back to our original examples, we have the regular forms “da” “quita” and “come” with follow this regular pattern (Da – “give” or “he gives”; quita – “remove” or “he removes” ; come – “eat” or “he eats”). “Ven” and “pon” are irregular imperatives. Perhaps the simple sound “ven” has evolved as a result of many centuries of screaming at wayward offspring. What the other bits are doing stuck on to the ends of these words will now have to wait until next week. Sorry!

FANS OF this author will know this is definitely not a book on culinary art and will expect whimsical tales about a Botswana detective agency or Professor Dr Von Igelfeld of the Institute of Romantic Philology in Munich. In this case it’s the redoubtable professor, whose adventures are always truly, madly and deeply silly. I enjoy reading of pompous prigs getting a putdown and no one is more pompous that the good professor and his colleagues, except perhaps the fixated librarian Herr Huber, who is lambasted admirably by his workmates – who, heaven forbid, would be mortified at that professional description. Charging off to Berlin to dispute the award of a literary prize that he’s certain was really meant for him or preparing to woo the widow who’s inherited the Schloss Dunkelburg from her late husband, Von Igelfeld blunders and blusters through McCall Smith’s delightful collection of tales, each told by the author at his wildest, wackiest, and funniest yet. Do your legs hurt when you walk? If so, read on…. There are many reasons why people may experience pain associated with walking one of those being intermittent claudication (IC) Patients with IC, complain of aching, cramping or tired legs that is brought about by exercise and relieved by resting for a few minutes. Depending on the degree of the problem, patients may experience pain in the buttocks, thigh, calf or foot. Other symptoms may include aching, burning or weakness. Sometimes, claudication can affect the arms too. Although it may be considered a disease, claudication is actually a symptom of disease. Most often, claudication is a symptom of peripheral vasuclar disease (PVD), a potentially serious, but treatable problem of the circulation caused by atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis means that the arteries are clogged with clumps of fat, cholesterol and other material, known atherosclerotic plaques. These plaques can make the arteries narrow, reducing blood flow. You feel pain because your leg muscles are not getting enough oxygenated blood. Oxygen is the fuel that muscles need to work. This is the same process that leads to angina but the heart muscle is starved of oxygen leading to pain. For this reason, claudication is sometimes referred to as angina of the legs. You are more likely to develop atherosclerosis if you: • Smoke • Have high cholesterol • Have high blood pressure • Have high levels of homocysteine

• Are obese (a body mass index over 30) • Are diabetic • Are over 70 years of age • Are over 50 years of age and you also smoke or have diabetes • Have a family history of atherosclerosis, peripheral vascular disease or claudication Claudication can be treated with medications to reduce cholesterol, improve blood supply and keep the blood thin. Sometimes an angioplasty will be performed and the artery widened using a balloon or a stent put in place. In other cases, the blocked artery is replaced with a healthy blood vessel taken from another part of the body. If you experience pain in your legs you should seek medical advice to find out exactly what is causing it and to rule out deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which requires urgent treatment.

Exercise combats health conditions and diseases Worried about heart disease? Hoping to prevent high blood pressure? No matter what your current weight, being active boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or ‘good,’ cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides. Survival at stake

The Ludai team and Lions visitors

By Jack Troughton THE MARINA ALTA’S unique early care Ludai Centre needs 75,000€ a year to survive and help give young children and parents the crucial “golden years” of learning, Lions Clubs were told on Tuesday. Founded in 2008 by the mother of a disabled child and a non-profit making organisation, it was received its official accreditation last year but must stand in line for promised government funding. Representatives of Denia, Calpe and Benissa, and Ondara Jalon and Orba Lions Clubs are looking to help bridge the gap and toured the modern centre built with private funds. Based in Denia, it provides diagnosis and therapy for children aged from birth to six thought to have difficulties but not of such a significant scale they qualify for other special schools in the area. The Ludai philosophy is ‘for a future of equal

opportunities’ and its open door policy means worried parents can take their child to the centre’s team of professionals – while accreditation means doctors can refer children to the centre. At present, alongside any town hall grants, parents pay 70€ a month flat fee regardless of how much therapy their child needs; members – or ‘friends’ - of the association pay 35€ a year, and the remainder of the budget comes through fund-raising. The Ludai was the brainchild of Jessica Rondro Molina, who recruited director Laura Llorca Bolufer, and they have assembled a team of specialists. GROWTH Laura said: “There are a lot of children that need the treatment we offer. The ages of nought to six are known as the golden years, it is where there is the most stimulation and

cerebral growth. “If you miss those years you can still do a lot but your gains are less – it is just so important, those early years.” She added: “Everything depends on the child and their disability, the age the child is, and the education of the parents as well. “They come to us noticing something is wrong with the child but do not know what it is – we have the experts to help and work one to one with the child.” Theresa Rawlinson, who has a daughter being helped at the centre, said it was a “brave decision” to open the Ludai and it was vitally important its work continued. “It is a labour of love because it was felt very strongly it was needed, but it is a very complicated situation at the moment,” she said. “It would be criminal to have to close now.” To find out more call the centre on 96 618 4292 or go to the website www.ludai.es

Rich beef stew with tomato dumplings You just can’t beat a deeply rich, dark, warming stew on cold winter evenings. And you can’t have stew without dumplings can you? So I dug out a trusted recipe for the dumplings and rummaged around the cupboard for the basic ingredients. Then I came across a pack of that trendy ingredient without which no meal was complete in the 1990’s – sun-dried tomatoes. Now I know they’re a bit passé these days, but I thought, why not? This was the result - dumplings with sun dried tomatoes – can you believe it? Try serving with a good helping of pickled red cabbage on the side. That’s what I call real comfort food. • 750g stewing steak, cut into chunks • 2 medium onions, peeled and roughly chopped • 5-6 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks • 300g mushrooms, quartered • 1 stick of celery • 300ml red wine • 300ml beef stock • 2 tbls plain flour • 1tsp dried mixed herbs • Black pepper • A dash of Worcestershire sauce For the dumplings • 150g self-raising flour

• 75g suet • 5-6 sun-dried tomatoes, chopped • 7-8 tbls cold water 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180° C. 2. Sear the beef in a large frying pan with a little oil over high heat until evenly brown (you may need to do this in batches). Place the beef in a large ovenproof casserole and stir in the flour. Next, fry the onions until soft and just beginning to brown at the edges, then add to the casserole with the carrots, mixed herbs and Worcestershire sauce. Add the wine to the frying pan and heat until bubbling, add the stock and bring to the boil, then pour into the casserole. Season with pepper then cover the casserole and place in the oven for 1½ hours. 3. Meanwhile, make the dumplings. In a large bowl, mix the flour and suet then add the sun-dried tomatoes. Add the water and bring the mixture together to form a soft dough. Form the dough into 10 –12 small dumplings. 4. Remove the casserole from the oven and stir in the mushrooms. Place the dumplings on top of the bubbling liquid, then cover the casserole and return to the oven. After 20 minutes remove the lid and return to the oven for a further

Sunday morning weekly Craft Market in La Nucia STARTING 10TH FEBRUARY, 10 to 12 craft stalls will set up shop each Sunday morning on the square in front of La Nucía Town Hall: the Town Hall provides the space and the craft association Amata chooses the stalls. This mutually beneficial idea came up after last July’s annual Medieval Market featuring around 70 stalls took part. Such a large market cannot be organised on a weekly basis but a small one was a distinct possibility. And so these dedicated stall holders will turn up every Sunday morning at about 10am, staying until around 2.30pm. Already some 40 people have indicated that they want to take part, so that every week the visitor can look at something different. From hand knitted shawls to leather handbags, from original jewellery to hand forged steel coat hangers - nothing imported, nothing from a factory and everything individually designed and made. It also becomes possible to order a special piece to suit a special person or special situation, and pick it up the next Sunday or the Sunday after. Some of the stallholders will organise small workshops from time to time so that children can make their own pieces, paying just a token price for the materials. Del Boy with a Scottish accent? Gerri’s gonna be a If you didn’t tune in to BBC4 at 11pm for the last two Wednesdays you’ll have missed something pretty special. Bob Servant Independent, as the series is called, started life in the real world of writer Neil Forsyth who, for a bit of fun, decided to reply to some of his spam emails and this rather bizarre idea grew into a book, then a Radio 4 series and now Bob Servant Independent has made it to the telly. Highly talented veteran actor Brian Cox plays the larger than life character who is trying to wheedle his way into winning a seat on the local council and to gain recognition decides to support dogs being shot, and the people who shoot dogs to be shot. Set in Broughty Ferry on Scotland’s east coast, Brian Cox tells us: “Bob Servant is a former burger van man who sees himself as the Scottish version of Nelson Mandela … and a bit of a wheeler and dealer as well … he’s a bit like a Scottish cousin of Del Boy!” Nelson Mandela and Del Boy rolled into one! … You’re havin’ a laugh! Another fine Scottish comic actor Jonathan Watson plays Bob’s campaign manager Frank, and Cox explains: “They are really two little boys. Bob’s about eight and Frank is about six and they wander the beaches of Broughty Ferry every day thinking about how they can pass the time,” something we can all relate to I’m sure… You can catch ‘Bob Servant Independent´’on BBC4 at 11pm on Wednesday evening, and I don’t know about you but I’ve booked my seat already as I can’t wait to see Nelson Mandela and Del Boy in the same skin.

Monster!

You may know that Gerri Halliwell started her career working as a hostess on Turkish TV’s version of The Price Is Right, and for sure we will know that she donned a Union Jack mini dress and became Ginger Spice in the highly successful but seriously naff Spice Girls. However, it’s the story of a new project Gerri has got involved in for Disney Junior UK that brings her here today. The show is called ‘Henry Hugglemonster’ and will be aired next Friday 8th February and Gerri will join such luminaries as Brenda Blethyn and Brian Blessed and voice Isabella Roarsome, a monster who becomes a pop star. Gerri tells us about how her six-year-old daughter Bluebell Madonna, (honest, that’s what she calls her), how Bluebell Madonna

has helped her prepare for her new role, “…it’s been so lovely to share this experience with my own daughter, who helped me learn the songs for my role as Isabella,” said the exginger one “…being involved in Henry Hugglemonster has been such a joy…” words that suggest to me that she has got lost in the land of the ‘lovie’. Then when I found out that her wee monster character will be wearing a gold tutu and a pretty little bow I got to thinking that Gerri could well be going down the ´I could win a Children’s TV Oscar´ road here.

Porno! Now I’ve got your attention... ‘The Last Resort with Jonathon Ross’ was first aired by Channel 4 way back in 1987 and I recall watching and enjoying all the ‘never seen before’ guests such as Ricky Gervais and Steve Coogan. I have my reservations on ‘Wossy’ these days on the back of the Andrew Sachs debacle, but I want to track back to Steve Coogan as a film

he recently made called ‘The Look of Love’ was received rather well at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah last week, and with close on 50,000 members, it is one of the largest of its kind in the USA. With a title like ‘The Look of Love’ you could well go down the romantic road but boy would you be wide of the mark. The movie tells the story of porn king Paul Raymond, a London Soho en-

trepreneur who ‘sold sex to Britain’ in the 60s. One of the big issues for Steve Coogan down the years has been his difficulty in shaking off the glorious Alan Partridge character he developed so well, but with Screen Daily saying “the role of Raymond was the ‘perfect platform’ for the actor’s undeniable talents” chances are we can all look forward to a bit porno and popcorn in the near future.

Tim Saunders Independent unbiased car reviewer

Warm to the Skoda Citigo THE SKODA Citigo arrives after I reluctantly return a Maserati Gran Turismo and a Volvo XC90.

Driving two cars in one week is tough in terms of writing about them and is not for the faint-hearted, I can tell you. You might expect the little Skoda to be a bit of a culture shock for me after living the life of Riley. Not so. Left in a car park for me to collect, it is pitch black, and so it is handy to be able to press the unlock button on the remote key fob and to see the lights flashing in the distance. This is despite the fact that it is at the bottom of the long car park and I am at the top. Once inside this city car, I am impressed with the simple layout of the dashboard yet surprised to find such luxuries as heated front seats as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. Four adults will easily fit inside this car. I instantly warm to it and perhaps surprisingly don’t feel that I’m driving a budget vehicle. I’m testing the three-door model and it’s comfortable despite its compact size. The driver’s seat is manually adjusted. Its five-speed manual gearbox is a little fluffy but it does the job. The whole point of this car, which I am told can be yours for just 74€ per month, is super efficiency. Fitted with engine stop/start it can return over 80mpg, which makes it one of the most economical vehicles on the roads today. Oh, the government isn’t going

to like this one bit. You see it means that you can fill up its tiddly 35 litre tank for around 50€ and travel over 500 miles. It’s quite an achievement for a petrol engine to be so efficient. Until this Skoda was introduced I was quite happy with my diesel Ford Fiesta, which returns over 40mpg.

andrew james is... The Man in the Middle Sponsored by “The Three Lions” (Carrer de Manuel de Falla, Albir)

The Best Footy Bar on the Costa Blanca; Showing Every Game, Every Week!

Elche on the rise!

Now I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t watch a great deal of Spanish second division football, but Elche C.F (of Costa Blanca fame!) are currently turning some heads. With twentythree games gone, “Los Franjiverdes” (the green-striped ones) sit top of the league, eleven points clear of second-placed Almeria and have a very real chance of joining the big boys in Spain’s premier division next season. I know we all have a favourite team, but I also like to follow my local clubs (be it in Spain or back home in the UK) so I’ve definitely got everything crossed that the lads down on Alicante coast can see the job through and gain promotion. If like me though, you’re not too familiar with the Costa Blanca’s latest heavy hitter, here’s everything you need to know:The club was founded in 1923 following the union of all the football teams in the area. In the late 1960s, they were managed by the legendary Alfredo Di Stefano. In 1976, they moved to their current home, Estadio Martinez Valero, which boasts an impressive capacity of over 37,000 seats. Throughout their history, they’ve yo-yo’d somewhat between the divisions but are currently looking to end a twenty-four year absence from Spain’s top table. They came close 2 seasons ago, having lost out to Granada in the promotion play-offs, but head coach Fran Escriba will be looking to go a step further this time around. While no particular player stands out in the goal-scoring charts, their ‘keeper, Manu Herrera certainly does, he has conceded the least amount of goals in both the 2nd division and La Liga! Twelve less than the mighty Barcelona!!!! So, between now and the end of the season, I’ll be featuring my new “second team” at least once a month and keep you up

Keeper, Manu Herrera

to date on how their promotion push is going. I also intend to get myself down to the Martinez Valero for a game or two. I don’t go and watch as much live football as I’d like these days. Back in the UK, I’d take in at least two games a month. But the combination of ticket prices and travelling distance has limited my ability to do that here in Spain. Now though, I have an opportunity to watch a high standard of football, within reasonable car-journey time and, as you can see from the information below, at a price that won’t break the bank. In fact, I’ve just had a brainwave! Forgive me if I mainly address the male readers here but whenever the subject of “Elche” is mentioned in my house, it’s usually in relation to Primark and the prospect of spending the best part of a day waiting for Mrs James to try clothes on! Don’t get me wrong, I quite enjoy the odd shopping trip but if I have the option of taking in a live game of football while the Mrs agonises over seven different (although they look the same to me!) pairs of jeans before leaving empty-handed, then

it’s a nice option to have! So keep an eye out for Los Franjiverdes at www.elchecf.es or www.resultados-futbol.com/segunda and hopefully, by this time next year, we’ll have the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Falcao and company, gracing the turf of our “local” football club. This Week in “The Lions”: Sat 2nd Feb: QPR v Norwich (1.45pm) Wales v Ireland (6 Nations – 2.30pm) Arsenal v Stoke (4pm) Newcastle v Chelsea (4pm) England v Scotland (6 Nations – 5pm) Fulham v Man United (6.30pm) Sun 3rd Feb: West Brom v Spurs (2.30pm) Italy v France (6 Nations – 4pm) Man City v Liverpool (5pm) Wed 6th Feb: All Home Nations Internationals

Andy Kay Hazardous for Chelsea players The Final Whistle I always thought it was the job of a governing body to oversee a sport, making it stronger where possible, attractive to both the public and sponsors and, most crucially, ensuring that all parties play by the same rules. The Football Association does a pretty good job on most of the above but when it comes to the last point, they have fallen way short of what is required. This week, the FA announced that Eden Hazard would be charged for kicking a ball boy during Chelsea’s Capital One cup defeat at Swansea. This is despite a new camera angle which shows that Hazard mostly made contact with the ball which the ball boy was refusing to give back to him. The trouble is that the FA has already set a precedent for such behaviour. Back in March of last year, Swindon’s Matt Ritchie grabbed and kicked a ball boy during a local derby with Oxford United. Ritchie, like Hazard, thought that the ball-boy was taking far too long to get the ball back to the goalkeeper. Ritchie was booked but that didn’t satisfy an Oxford fan who wrote to the FA asking if the Swindon player shouldn’t be charged with violent conduct. The FA responded thus “the player was cautioned by the referee for the incident and has subsequently apologised to the satisfaction of the ball boy and Oxford United”. How is it that Ritchie gets way with a yellow card but that Hazard gets a red one and also faces further punishment? Well, I think we all know the answer. It’s simple – Ritchie plays for Swindon while Hazard plays for Chelsea. I’m no Chelsea fan but the FA can’t have it both ways. Indeed, if they want to persecute the Belgian further, I suggest that a more suitable charge would be that he didn’t kick the cheating, timewasting ball boy hard enough! Telfer‘s Daily Mail love-in Jim Telfer was a magnificent rugby coach and I firmly believe that without him, the British Lions would not have won in South Africa in 1997. But he lost much of my respect following his interview this week with the Daily Mail. The Scot described the England rugby team as “too

Maybe he didn’t kick the cheating, timewasting ball boy hard enough

arrogant, pretentious and condescending to realise that they are not as good as they think they are.” Telfer is entitled to his opinion but where is the evidence for such a statement? The truth is that there isn’t any. Telfer is just regurgitating ages-old, deep-seated envy and resentment. Yes, everyone hates England. We all know that. But isn’t time that papers like the Daily Mail stop running interviews that include stereotypical clap-trap that has no basis in fact.

Indeed, rather than bragging about their ‘brilliant’ interview as they did for days after, perhaps the Mail might consider why journalist Alan Fraser (another Scot perchance?) didn’t challenge Telfer as to his views. For the record, England are at number 5 in the IRB rankings and in their last game, they beat New Zealand. Scotland meanwhile are ranked 12th and in their last match, they lost at home to Tonga. Perhaps Telfer and Fraser might concern themselves with that rather than with the reporting of biased nonsense.

THIS WEEK was a rare week for the club as the match was an open match, the second and last one of the season. The venue was the Eden canal, being switched from the Embalse de Pedrera due to the rain of the evening before. The Pedrera is treacherous during and after rain, until the bank has dried out. Although the Eden has not been fishing too well, it did produce more fish than it has of late. The wind was blowing a hooley and everybody settled for the feeder, which was really the only method available considering the conditions. TOP RODS ON THE DAY 1st - Terry (Swing ‘Em) Screen fishing the feeder and using maggot with 6.32 kilos 2nd - Tony (The Flowerman) Price fishing the feeder using maggot with 3.58 kilos 3rd - Bill (The Master) Reade fishing the feeder using maggot with 3.48 kilos

gling Cup on 22nd January once again at the Embalsa de Pedrera, and this match also incorporated the 3rd round of the RTN Inter club trophy. The lakes water level is constant at the moment, as the water being drawn off by the canal for irrigation equals the water being pumped in. 1st - Dave (The Sweetie Man) Hutchinson with 11.960kg AA 2nd - Mick (The Arsenal) Hill with 7.760kg AA 3rd - Clive (No more golf) Cleghorn with 3.800kg RR 4th - Terry (Swing em) Screen with 3.660kg AA 5th - Bill (The Master) Reade with 1.840kg RR 6th - Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare with 0.640kg RR With five dry nets. FC Torry news

Worrying times at Torry. Last Sunday Torry lost at home to table toppers Novelda 3-1. Torry were 2 goals down inside the first 15 minutes but got a life-line after 25 minutes through a lobbed goal by Luis Carlos after an error by a Novelda defender. They were then dealt a hammer blow when forward Koeman was sent off after 35 minutes for a late challenge. Very harsh. Novelda added a third 15 minutes into the send half and it was definitely game over. Torry tried hard but it was never going to be. Torry now have 2 “back to back” away matches from which they need to get something. The first is at Muro on Sunday. If they fail to get a couple of points from these away games they might find themselves in the relegation zone or just outside it. The transer window closed yesterday and hopefully they will have recruited 2 or 3 half decent players with the priority being a couple of midfielders.

Time to merge? Noel’s world of golf By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Alicante Golf 639 730 891

I HAVE had a number of conversations recently with golf society organisers who inform me that our golf clubs are refusing to offer the discounts to societies that were once common place. In recent years we have seen a dearth of new golf societies formed as the larger ones have had internal disputes to varying degrees. This coupled with the fact that there are now fewer British expatriates here than for a large number of years, has confused our golf course owners to some extent as they feel that more golf societies should mean more customers. Sadly, as we all know, many of these golf course managers bury their heads in the sand and don’t live in the real world so we have to go along with them and try to convince them slowly that things have changed dramatically. The biggest problem for the golf society fixtures secretary who deals direct with the golf club is obtaining a price that is fair and acceptable to members. Green fee prices are always a hot topic of discussion as the golf course owners always see their golf courses in a different light than the rest of us. Practically all owners see their golf course as the best

in the area for condition and design - they have to think that way they are selling their product. It is up to us the golfing public to make them understand that there really is very little to choose between all the golf clubs in South Eastern Spain. Most of the time the bottom line will be the price - sometimes we will pay a little more to play a golf club that is perceived as a better test of golf or that it is in better condition than others but the bottom line is that whatever course we play it is still just a golf course to most golfers. At certain clubs we are made to feel more welcome than others and this will have a massive effect on which ones are chosen to be part of a society’s rotation of courses for the year. This is one area where the golf clubs need to improve dramatically but we divers a little here and will return to this subject another time. The big question I suppose is this: is it time for some societies to merge to get the benefit of bulk purchasing power? This is a contentious issue in many cases but it may be the only way to obtain prices that are affordable to your members so it has

to be worth considering for many of the smaller groups until things change surely? WIN A DOZEN SRIXON GOLF BALLS COURTESY OF GOLF MED Answer the question below correctly to have a chance to win. The winner of this fantastic prize will be picked at random at the end of each month. LAST TUESDAY in what was perhaps the best day of the week weather wise our golfers were set a severe test over the championship course at Alicante Golf. Thanks to the weather Gods, only a slight breeze bothered the golfers who took part in our single Stableford competition and good scores were expected from practically everyone. With the golf course once again presented in excellent condition and greens that were as smooth as any, it was indeed the greens that presented the biggest challenge. One member who we will not name for fear of embarrassment hit the par 5 fourth hole in two and walked off with a seven on his card thanks to a five putt, now that takes some doing don’t you think? As expected the putting stroke of this particular player did not improve as the game wore on and his card was the only no return from a field missing our own professional, Noel Eastwell, this week who was spared the challenge to organise a special deal for our members with the manager of Alicante Golf. Each Tuesday it seems that we are joined by new people who enjoy their golf with us and we hope that we continue to attract new faces to our meetings. A big thank you goes to Peter Hasell in particular for encouraging so many people to come and play with us. This week it was the enthusiastic Peter Hasell, Steve May and Natasha Woodhams who took the prizes. The best score of the day was 39 points returned by Natasha Woodhams. Her score was the only one over 30 points with Steve May coming in second with 29 points. The two’s competition was fully subscribed and both Peter and Natasha scored birdie two’s on hole three to share the pot. Our weekly tournaments continue at Alicante Golf every Tuesday where our members receive the exclusive price of 41€ for eighteen holes of golf including buggy. All of our tournaments are open to RTN Golf Club members and their guests. All you have to do is email golf@roundtownnews.com with your names and handicaps and we will advise you of your start time. Come along and enjoy your golf with Spain’s best golf club. GOLFING TIP OF THE WEEK You should always aim to improve your scores with realistic goals in mind.
