by Jack Troughton HARLEY DAVIDSON motorcycles won 20 new dedicated fans as the Bay Radio Biker Babes discovered they were born to be wild.

The ladies, recruited to raise money for youngsters cared for by the charity EMAUS, took part in an annual ‘ride out’ as around

540 machines paraded through Albir, Altea, Alfaz and Benidorm on Sunday.

And each of the Biker Babes earned a pillion seat by pledging to raise a minimum of 100€ in sponsorship for the charity – by the Harley Davidson Fun Day Spectacular at Albir they had collectively raised 7,000€ and it is hoped the final total could be 10,000€.

It was a very special day for Albir teenager Roisin O’Connor at Eucalyptus Park – celebrating her 15th birthday on the day, her ride on one of the gleaming bikes was a surprise present.

Roisin’s verdict was: “Awesome day, awesome bikes, awesome people. Awesome!”

Lisa Fox was crowned ‘Queen Babe

2013’ after topping the fund raising chart and contributing 1,105€ to the appeal. She said: “It was an experience I will always remember and I went to sleep with a big grin on my face because I loved it so much – it was truly one of the best things that I have ever done.

Harley owner Peter Emmett came up with the fund raising idea – hoping to present around 2,000€ to the Children of EMAUS. By midweek he said 8,000€ had been pledged and told RTN: “I don’t think it is unreasonable to say this could ultimately go to 10,000€.”

KITTY And he revealed an anonymous donor had contributed 500€ to the kitty. While all the Biker Babes were keen for another ride – and promising to raise more cash.

“I am a very happy guy,” said Peter. “I was told the numbers of bikers on the ride out was 540. However, the local authority said that overall, in the whole area attending on Sunday the numbers were much closer to 1,000.”

He added: “When I thought of this I didn’t know if it would even go ahead – I thought there could be issues with insurance and public liability but everyone gave it an open door.

“Even when going to Bay Radio I wasn’t sure until they said ‘yes’ and we were very fortunate the station has a special relationship with RTN. With all of that I am very, very blessed because you need that support.”

Councillor for Agriculture and Fisheries in Javea, Juan Luis Cardona immediately met with representatives of the Valencia Farmers Association (AVA) to prepare a petition to the town hall. It called for the Valencian Government to declare affected parts “a disaster area” and has won the unanimous backing of Javea Town Hall.

Mr Cardona, a member of Xabia Democratica, said the sudden hail storm on 27th May caused damage to 90% of crops in municipality fields – including grapes, oranges, olives and vegetables.

HELP He also contacted neighbouring Gata Town Hall in a bid to coordinate the request to Valencia for help.

And he praised the OAC – the Citizens Advice Bureau – in Javea for its speed in establishing a special office “as the point at which those most affected can notify us of the damage caused by the hail.”

AVA spokesman Antonio Mezquida said it was too early to estimate the overall economic cost of the storm, but newspaper reports painted a gloomy picture claiming the bill could run into several million Euros.

Planning for ballot battles THE BRITISH Labour Party has enrolled two of American President Barack Obama’s key advisors for help as it prepares its next General Election campaign.

by Jack Troughton THE PAIR, community activist Arnie Graf and IT expert Matthew McGregor, played important roles in the Obama camp during the successful presidential campaign.

The move was revealed by Johanna Baxter, a member of Labour’s National Executive Committee, in a visit to Spain and giving up time from a holiday in Valencia to speak to party members.

She said Labour had identified 106 “battleground” constituencies it needed to secure to win the 2015 General Election.

Johanna, who works for trade union Prospect and is Constituency Secretary in Peckham, the seat of Harriet Harman MP, was speaking to Labour International Costa Blanca at a lunch in Gandia.

She said the party’s overall campaign manager was Tom Watson MP, who led the Parliamentary fight to expose the News International phone-hacking scandal – which later triggered the Leveson Inquiry.

However, she also pointed out there was first the small matters of European Elections and the referendum of Scottish Independence.

Johanna, a Scot herself, said: “The Scottish Labour Party is campaigning against independence under the slogan ‘Better Together’.”

Malcolm Hardy, Chair of the Labour International branch, said members were thankful the party was gearing up for a General election.

“When we return to power, as our members see it, the Labour Party will have an enormous challenge to rescue the British economy after Cameron and Osborne’s mismanagement.”

The ministry steps up summer security THE MINISTRY of the Interior has confirmed that ‘Operacion Verano’ (Operation Summer) will commence from 1st July in a drive to tighten present security measures at airports, railway station and popular tourist areas. 1,340 extra officers will be put into place over the summer months to help prevent tourist-targeted crime in holiday hotspots and at summer events that attract large crowds.

A dangerous hiding place

NATIONAL POLICE arrested a desperate Algerian immigrant in Tarifa this week as he tried to enter Spain by hiding in the propeller housing of a ferry that sailed from Tangier in Morrocco. The 48-year-old stowaway was clinging to the boat only inches from the turning propeller. He allegedly intended to enter the water at the port before dodging checkpoint police. He is being charged with offences under the Immigration Act.

Bound corpse triggers murder hunt POLICE LAUNCHED a murder inquiry after the handcuffed and badly burned body of a man was found in a car near Alicante this week.

by Jack Troughton Firemen were called to a narrow tunnel under the AP-70 motorway between Sant Joan and El Campello – just outside Alicante – when residents living in the area reported columns of smoke billowing from either end of the little-used underpass.

After extinguishing the flames, the fire fighters made the gruesome find. It was first believed the death was a tragic accident and the man had been unable to get out of the car because of the confined space, or possibly a suicide.

However, police discovered the body was handcuffed and now believed it was a killing linked to the drugs underworld.

A post-mortem was being held to discover whether the man – believed to be a resident of Sant Joan – died in the fire or was killed before the vehicle was abandoned in the tunnel and set alight.

Cyclists fined in Valencia

THE LOCAL Police in Valencia have launched a new control campaign for cyclists with the aim of making the roads and pavements safer for other road users and pedestrians. Within the first five days of the campaign 229 cyclists were fined over the movement and parking of bicycles, almost half of which were for riding on pavements or gardens. Other offences included cycling while using headphones or a mobile telephone: fines range from 70€ to 90€.

AVE could bring a million extra tourists

THE NEW AVE high-speed train could attract more than a million tourists a year to the Costa Blanca, as average journey times drop below the two and a half hour mark between Madrid and Alicante. The line officially opens next Tuesday, June 18th 2013, with the inaugural two days almost completely sold out within 24 hours, as tourists flock to the region for the Bonfires of Sant Joan. At the time of writing there were only a few seats available in Preferred, with virtually everything sold out for next Friday and Saturday.

The launch of the new high-speed line between Alicante and Madrid will involve the generation of two hundred direct jobs.

Renfe has already sold about 25,000 tickets to passengers who have taken up the introductory offer allowing them to travel between the two cities for less than seventy euros, roundtrip.

The Ministry of Development predicts that the opening of the high-speed line between Alicante and Madrid will double the passenger capacity to the Mediterranean region, which will have a direct benefit to the province of nearly a million new visitors, to be built up over the next couple of years.

Renfe’s calculations, as given to the president of the council, Luisa Pastor, is that 50% of passengers who travel on the AVE between Alicante and Madrid will target the capital of the province, but the rest will travel to different tourist towns on the Costa Blanca. Nearly 80,000 Madrid residents have their second homes in the province. These are located mainly in Torrevieja, Benidorm, Santa Pola, Guardamar, El Campello, Elche and Sant Joan.

Specifically, according to figures from the council, Torrevieja is the town that has attracted the most second home buyers in recent years, featuring 24,398 homes, followed by Benidorm, with 8,494 dwellings; Guardamar (7,833), Santa Pola (6,538), El Campello (3,643) Elche (2,079) and Sant Joan (392).In total, Suma overseas a total of 107,378 receipts in the province of individuals with tax residence in Madrid.

Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, will oversee the opening ceremony of the new AVE service between Madrid and Alicante, on Monday June 17th, which will be available to the general public from the following day. New community centre

By Jack Troughton JAVEA HAS opened a new community centre ‘Civic Punt’ aimed at providing cohesion in a neighbourhood made up of a host of different nationalities.

Funded by the European social Fund and Spain’s Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare, the building in Javea Park, in the Arenal, it is designed to be used as a multipurpose space while also giving

people access to town hall services.

Described to residents as “your meeting point”, it offers free space for workshops and meetings while a trained team are on hand to help out.

The Civic Punt was officially opened last weekend and the community was brought together with a fiesta and were able to inspect the first local government office in the Arenal - part of a move to decentralise

Eating is off the menu

by Jack Troughton PEOPLE ARE being urged to give up food on Friday 21st June - the longest day – to help feed the hungry across the Costa Blanca.

Organisers hope the sponsored fast between sunrise and sunset will show both solidarity with families hit by Spain’s recession – and raise cash for Caritas and the Red Cross, two charities busy putting food on tables.

Fasting in Fellowship is the brainchild of Bob and Liz Spokes and they hope it will prove to be a popular way for expats to give something back to the community.

Bob is treasurer of the Rotary International Fellowship Denia and he told RTN the group did not actively raise funds but over the years had made donations to good causes.

“We had a discussion at Rotary one day over whether we could jack this up a bit,” he explained. “Then Liz and I were sitting on our ‘naya’ overlooking Orba and discussing what a nice life we have here and thinking what we could do to help others.

“There was something on Bay Radio in connection with Bob Geldof and Live Aid and I thought we could do something like that – but obviously it was too ambitious involving a lot of effort and you need the contacts he had.

“But that got us thinking. The other way of raising money is through spon-

PACO DOMENECH and Antonia Garcia, who were married while the Spanish Civil War raged around them, celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary in Alcoy this week.

Paco had been seriously injured while fighting for the Republicans on the Teruel front. Their wedding was hastily arranged and they were married by the mayor of Benirredra on 8th June 1938. Antonia recalls, “In the end, victory was on Franco’s side so the wedding was not recognised – we had to pay to get married again a year later in the Iglesia de San Jorge (Church of St George) in Alcoy!” After 75 happy years together Paco, aged 101, and Antonia at 96, were delighted to celebrate their 75th Anniversary with family and friends at a local restaurant.

Improved service for Brits BRITISH VISITORS and residents on the Mediterranean coast can expect better support services from the Consulate team at its new home in Alicante.

by Jack Troughton ALREADY ONE of the busiest consular posts in the world, the British Government has invested in modern and efficient premises to improve the level of support for vulnerable UK citizens needing help.

And officially opening the offices last Friday, British Ambassador Giles Paxman said the event marked the importance the Alicante region has for both expats and visitors – and their contribution to the local Spanish economy.

Mr Paxman was joined at the ceremony by Luisa Pastor, President of the Alicante provincial government, local town hall politicians and representatives of the National Police and Guardia Civil.

The ambassador said the British Government had demonstrated a commitment to in-

sure vulnerable nationals were given support when things went wrong. He said the new offices had improved disabled access and the layout was designed to improve the experience of visitors to the Consulate.

Mr Paxman said: “I am immensely proud of the hard work our consular posts perform throughout Spain to help vulnerable British nationals.

“These new premises in Alicante will help the team here give even better support, particularly for those with reduced mobility who need easier access.”

He added: “It is a credit to Consul Paul Rodwell, his team, and colleagues in London that this project has been delivered on schedule and under budget.”

The ambassador highlighted the economic

importance of the British community.

More than two million British tourists visit the Valencian community every year, generating €1.32billion in revenue, while more than 132,000 British residents live in Alicante province, some 7% of the total population.

A SPANISH Guardia Civil guard dog by the name of Ajax has been honoured with the UK charity PDSA Gold Medal this week. The medal is the animal equivalent to the George Cross and is awarded for bravery or for outstanding devotion to duty.

The ten-year-old Alsatian works as a sniffer dog in the bomb squad. He is the first Spanish dog to receive the award and only the second to be decorated with the medal outside the UK. Ajax receives his award for his role in detecting ETA bombs on Majorca in July 2009 where a terrorist attack took place near a Guardia Civil station in Palma Nova, days before the King’s annual visit to the island. The explosion took the lives of two Guardia Civil officers, Carlos Garcia Saenz de Tejada and Diego Salva Lezáun. Ajax detected a further concealed bomb that had been attached to the underside of a vehicle near the barracks, specifically placed to injure those rescuing casualties from the first bomb.

New theme park for Valencia VALENCIA CITY Council has received a proposal for the building of a €200 million theme park in Sagunto by Chinese investors. The project would provide employment for 400 workers and would be located in the macro-VII area.

It is estimated the park would attract 50 million tourists to the area. Sagunto was chosen for its privileged location and good road links between Valencia and Castellon. It is also only 20 minutes from Valencia airport. The theme of the park is to be Asian with five proposed areas: China Town, Bangkok Town, Tokyo Town, Delhi Town and Asian Commercial Street, covering an area of 289,900 square meters.

You think you have a problem RE: A problem shared. I have lived on the same Urbanisation on the Costa Blanca for 17 years and for the last two, the President and committee have managed to turn what was a truly well run organisation into what only can be described as a dictatorial den of iniquity.

The Title ‘Urbanisation President’ should be synonymous with people like Kim Jong-il, Robert Mugabe, Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini because that’s how people who assume this mantle start to behave when they abuse their powers.

Take our Urbanisation President for instance. She thinks it’s her right to spend large amounts of our money using illegal workers without the necessary licence and insurance just to avoid the payment of IVA to the Spanish government. She thinks it’s her right to refuse urbanisation members access to the urbanisation accounts and documents when she is challenged about the illegal activities she is condoning. She thinks it is her right to ride roughshod over the democratic proceedings by staging the unabated odious barracking and violent behaviour just to disrupt the AGM process in an attempt to suppress the truth. And why do you think she believes she can do all this is? Because she can.

How do you resolve this or any other problem you believe you have with your urbanisation President?

Well firstly, you have to have people to support you.

Unfortunately, the strength of character needed to bring these people to task is sadly lacking when it comes to putting your best foot forward. For whatever reason people don’t want to get involved. Oh, they want some action to take place but they don’t want to be the one to do it. Does the metaphor ‘rats leaving the sinking ship’ ring a bell?

Or one could use the Horizontal Property Law Act. But a word of warning before you go down this route: this action could seriously damage your wealth and could resemble elephant mating: done on a very high level with lots of stomping and screaming involved and a two-year wait for results. Either way you will be the loser in the end.

Sorry I can’t be of any help. Maybe the best advice I can give you is don’t get involved in the first place. It’s a sad reflection on we humans but influence brings out the worst in some of us. Remember power corrupts: absolute power corrupts absolutely.

What is the situation with the European Medical Cards

CAN YOU clarify the situation with the European Medical Cards as far as holiday makers are concerned? Watchdog on the BBC put the blame squarely on the shoulders of Spanish hospitals for not accepting the European Medical Cards and said it was a way of making more money in this period of austerity. The Guardian paper also said it was again down to the Spanish hospitals and the British Government had taken the complaint to the European Commission. This alone makes no sense, as surely, it does not matter to the hospitals if they get the money from individuals, their insurance or the British Government, as long as they get the money! I also remember reading a couple of months ago that some hospitals in our area were still owed money from the British Government going back 18 months, which is obviously causing concern with the hospitals. Ladies road bike stolen

ON SATURDAY 25th May at 11am, my ladies road bike was stolen from the side of the CV895 (Lemon Tree Road) Guardamar-Los Montesinos road, close to the Moncayo market.

The make is Vortex, colour silver-grey. It has up-and-over handlebars with black foam, 21 speed, basket on front, rack on the back, stand, dynamo, mudguards, bell and an ‘I love bike’ sticker. The back wheel was padlocked to the frame. Please look out for it (car boots, auctions, neighbours) and let me know if you see it? Alison

Tax on cyclists

WHY IS it that the Spanish Government hasn’t put a tax on cyclists? Surely this would bring in a fair amount of money as there are an awful lot of cyclists in this country. It makes sense to charge for their use of the road as they take up half of the carriageway and hold up traffic all the time when they are out in groups.

They are Kings of the Road - there is no way you can pass them and God help you if you happen to knock one over, even if it isn’t your fault. As a cyclist myself I would gladly pay 10€ or 15€ per year. Ray Wood

This year has seen the opening of our second shop. Due to the usual Spanish technicalities we opened the new shop with no signs up and had to rely only on RTN for

publicity and to tell our potential customers that we were open. Our first day, and indeed within a week of trading, the new shop was an incredible success, packed with potential customers all day and the till never stopped ringing! This can only be because of the RTN. I cannot praise or recommend them highly enough to any and all businesses.

By Jack Troughton LUCKY PAUL Grant is celebrating winning a Renault Twizy in the Grant A Wish raffle that raised over 4,000€ to help good on the Costa Blanca. Paul’s ticket number 86 was the first to be drawn and he was “delighted” when the 10,000€ was delivered to his home in Benidoleig.

These are probably the most common problems advertised by Hypnotherapists throughout Spain and the UK. woman in Northern Ireland had been robbed at gunpoint so hid her jewellery and promptly forgot where.

She had hidden them in her childhood teddy bear and then stitched it back up. And this one…

Surviving the streets

by Bianca Cobo WE’VE ALL seen it before in films. A young naïve girl chooses to venture down a dark alley alone. A hooded figure approaches from behind and grabs her. But it’s all over with a swift kick upwards - no points to who guesses where - and the assailant groaning in pain as the victim runs away.

However, this is real life, not a film. Although a few pointers can be taken from Hollywood’s dramatic portrayal of self-defence, we shouldn’t rely entirely on their views, as unfortunately, they don’t always work. The attacker isn’t always stupid and could be aware of your intentions.

Despite there being many ways to get out of a fight once it has begun, it is better to completely avoid it. Simply by avoiding dark alleys or choosing to remain with a group of friends can vastly decrease the probability of an attack.

Trust your instincts. Do you feel like you’re being watched? If you do, you’re often right - we have intuition for something - and even if you’re wrong, better safe than sorry. A lot of this is just common sense, but common sense can sometimes save lives.

However, if a tricky situation should arise,

the best thing to do is to be prepared. Go to some self-defence classes and keep doing them. You need to drill the techniques being taught, so that they become second nature.

Attending karate or any martial arts helps.

For example, Washinkai Karate - a form of karate taught on the Marina Alta - teaches many different aspects of defence. It includes partner work, one person attacks, the other defends, and students are taught many different ways to react to different scenarios.

WOMEN Sensei Sarah Lakin, a 3rd Dan black belt, teaches self-defence courses - sometimes for women only so that they feel more comfortable. The message is to avoid tricky situations, but if you are ever in trouble, a sharp kick to the groin is effective.

If you’re grabbed from behind; a quick hard pinch in their inner thigh or using your elbows - as you can put a lot of weight behind them – or fingers into the attacker’s eyes can give you enough time to escape. Everyday items like pens, keys or an umbrella can also be used.

Sarah said: “Basically you don’t want to get into a situation in the first place. You want to walk around confidently and walk tall, don’t get into a situation where you might come

across something, be aware of your surroundings – that’s not always possible but it is the first rule of self-defence.”

She said people should not go into dark alleys on their own at night and – especially females – should get into their car and immediately lock the doors.

But Sarah underlined that training and constant practice was essential. “Everything

has to be done fast and with surprise – that’s why it is important people train, so it becomes an automatic reaction.

“We feel it is very important that students need constant practice – you cannot get the speed without the drill and the only way to get that is train, train, and train.”

Community backs children’s home

Normandy revisited

By Jack Troughton A ‘D-Day Do’ proved to be a sellout success for the Benidoleig Branch of the Royal British Legion with over 80 members and guests marking the 69th anniversary of the Normandy Landings.

James Hurst was back by popular demand to play the music of the 1940s and hosts at the El Cid Restaurant in Benidoleig served a roast dinner with a selection of puddings from the era.

Branch chairman welcomed Jack Grindy, President of the Javea Branch of the Legion, and the Benidoleig President George Rutherford – both served in Normandy on 6th June, 1944.

The event raised 437€ for the Poppy Appeal and the branch’s Poppy Appeal Gala Ball has been scheduled for 16th November.

A meeting for members and guests takes place on 26th June at 11.30am at El Cid followed by lunch if required.

Guest Speaker is Geoff Evans, of Protector Spain on home security.

PEOPLE LIVING in the Relleu area came together to enjoy a knees-up and singsong - and raise much-needed funds for the town’s EMAUS home.

Around a dozen youngsters aged from two to their early teens live at the home and all come from difficult backgrounds – and the charity is suffering during the recession, finding it diffilcult to make ends meet.

Enter the Relleu branch of Friends of the Children of EMAUS who raise funds to support the home and are backed by the local community.

And more than 300€ was raised when the event the Lemon Tree in Relleu attracted more than 60 people singing and dancing to the band Omega, and enjoying a buffet organised by the charity with food donated by members.

World Day of the Sun Sun care advice at the Casa de la Cultura LOUISE STONE, Store Director of Specsavers Opticas in Calpe together with Optometrist Cecilia Navarro Tudela, will present a one hour talk about the positive and negative effects of the sun and how to make the most of the sun safely. As well as protecting your skin with high factor sun protection, a hat and light clothing, sunglasses are recommended to protect your eyes from the sun. Check sunglasses comply with UNE-EN 1836:2006 + A1:2008 or bear the CE kite mark and are marked UV 400 and select styles which are large, or wraparound to minimise light entering the eyes from the side.

Adoption success

By Jack Troughton ANIMAL CHARITY SCAN is enjoying success with an 83% adoption rate as it finds loving homes for cats and dogs arriving at its El Vergel base.

Last month the Society for the Care of Animals in Need recorded the adoption of 20 cats and 18 dogs. And last Saturday a sponsored walk and fair raised 1,639€ for the charity with 45 walkers taking rescued dogs or their own pets for a stroll through the surrounding countryside.

“We are doing really well,” she said. “It is good old fashioned team work that does it!”

OH, LORD! Or maybe I should say Oh, Lard – because the ‘Change For Life’ bus has rumbled over to our workplace today and according to the fitness-experts on board my BMI has gone berserk. Apparently, I’m a little too tubby for my own good.

Picture this dear reader: the Change For Life bus is currently patrolling the West Midlands and is packed with posters, pamphlets and prophylactics (yes

indeed – the Durex Red Ribbed Cherry Dominator has gone down a storm) all aimed at improving the health and well-being of us mortals. And I was a tad surprised to learn that I’ve grossed out at fourteen-stone plus. I knew that post-Easter I’d put on a wee bit but this is just silly.

I blame it on not coming to Spain for ages because, as past columns will testify, I always slim up a bit for Costa Blanca

exposure. After all, one cannot go larding it about on Albir beach, can one?

Anyhow, the too-slim-for-their-ownbloody-good fitness guys and gals on the CFL bus say I need to turn back to a heading of twelve and a half (stone that is).

Hummph, easy for them to say but how will an aging hack achieve this?

I told the bronzed, achingly youthful toned-ones that I’d recently written in RTN about the newly developed ‘tenminute High Intensity Training’ and asked for their thoughts on the subject.

Well, they looked me up and down a bit and drew their breath (much like a builder about to discourse on your need for a new roof) and concluded that maybe, just maybe, I might like not to shock my system too much. “Why not try a bit of gentle cycling?” said Brad. How come these sports-types are always Brad or Steve or Jade? “Well Brad,” I fumbled poorly for an excuse, “that would necessitate a bike, would it not?”

If I recall, the last time I saw my bikes they were collecting dust in Dave and Sheenagh’s under-build in La Nucia. I certainly did not fancy riding that far.

And in any case Dave has rather kindly donated them to a charity shop. Better someone had some use out of them. So, if you happen to be riding around the Be-

nidorm area on a Marin Muirwoods or a Marin Bob Cat Trail they may well be exRTN reporter’s transport… please enjoy.

Whip-pan (that’s TV talk) back to the CFL bus. Brad is looking at me quizzically, he knows I’m procrastinating.

“Look,” he says, handing me a CFL pamphlet, “I happen to know that your firm is participating in the ‘cycle to work’ scheme.” Gulp, what - cycle all the way to work? “It’ll get some of your, erm, excess down,” he grins. The scheme Brad advocates is tax-free, so naturally I’m all agog. For a mere £5.76 per week I could be the proud owner of a shiny, spiffing new velocipede. Quick, Brad give me the low-down...

Long story short, my Raleigh Pioneer for gents arrives next week. By the end of a fortnight I should be back to twelve and a half stone; easy peasy... Among the Palms, the First Alternative Ecological and Craft Fair took place, which attracted ‘Eco’ merchants from across the province. On sale were such natural items as cheese, vegetables, fruit, honey, drawings, paintings, toys and clothes in an event organized by the Department of Environment on the

occasion of World Environment Day. Visitors had the opportunity to browse among the various crafts and organic goods, while workshops taught the skills of muffin making, Tai Chi, dance and there was also a showing of the documentary “Children of Water” at Cinesféric.

The events continued with a concert by the group Eolia who gave a concert featuring jazz, bossanova and boleros.

The performance took place in the cultural precinct ‘El Pájaro’, located next to

A DYING turtle that weighed only 4kilos, rescued by Castellón fisherman in 2011, finally returned to his natural habitat on Wednesday. Now weighing 23kilos and his shell fitted with a monitor, he was gently dropped into the waters off the coast of Albir, much to the delight of local children who showed up to ‘wave him off!’ “Mel will now be monitored daily by the City of Arts & Sciences in Valencia and Lisbon Oceanarium,” said Hayfield Miller, CEO of the City of Arts & Sciences. Mel was nursed back to health by the Ark of the Sea Specialised Centre for Sea Turtle Recovery.

Roses in Spain by

ROSES LOOK wonderful in Spanish gardens at present as they have in late spring for two millenniums. The flowers and perfume can make great features near a wall, corner of the garden, patio or courtyard but only with a fair amount of effort, the six most important factors being the choice of plants; their planting in well prepared, rich soil; regular watering; frequent removal of dead flowers; prevention of diseases and heavy late winter pruning.

Before you decide to invest in rose plants recognise that: Although roses can flower for nine months of the year they will not be as continuously flowering or as profusely covered with flowers as say bougainvilleas or lantanas.

Climbers can be planted as an isolated feature or fitted in with other climbers on a wall or pergola but bush roses look best in a dedicated rose bed or garden, planted closely to give a mass of colour. But as already suggested that means a lot of work deadheading as flowers die, as well as a heavy winter pruning.

In hot weather roses often last longer if cut and put in a vase than if left on the bush. If one cuts roses for the house this reduces the colour in the rose garden unless extensive. This is why many Spaniards and we too grow our roses alongside vegetable plots.

In general there is less choice of varieties of roses in Spanish nurseries than in northern Europe. Some of the varieties you will not recognise and the best varieties sell out fast. Unless you

have a local nursery with a good selection obtain a few mail order catalogues from UK specialists and order early to avoid disappointments.

One good thing about Spain is that it is easy to propagate roses from cuttings at any time of the year. So beg a cutting of every rose that impresses you in your neighbours and friends gardens, or beg the stems of cut roses when they empty a vase to throw them away.

We use the following approach learned from a Spanish neighbour: cut off the flowering or leafy top. Slit the base of the cutting for a centimetre and a half and squeeze into a dried sweet corn seed. Plant the cutting so that two thirds of the cutting is buried, making sure that the sweet corn is not dislodged. Keep damp. We prefer to plant cuttings in the open ground to planting in pots….largely because we might forget to water them! When the cutting shows growth grow it on in the same place or dig up and transplant when a year old during the late autumn, winter or early spring.

The heat and humidity of Spain can cause as many disease problems as in northern Europe. However the following actions should avoid most disasters: Only use healthy cuttings and purchase healthy plants.

Never allow rose plants to dry out.

Feed by working well rotted manure into planting holes and surround the base of planted stems with a ring of horse manure each spring. A twice monthly feed with a proprietary rose fertilizer or comfrey solution is also beneficial during the months of flowering.

Plant garlic corms alongside each plant or if growing alongside the vegetable plant grow a line of garlic through the rose bed to protect against fungal diseases.

Spray plants against rust with an infusion made from horsetail and tomato leaves.

RCDs explained in plain English SIMPLY PUT, the RCD is the most important safety device in your Consumer Unit. It prevents serious electrocution and can save lives. It can also provide some protection against electrical fires. Don’t ignore the importance of this little baby!

In Spain an RCD is called an Interruptor Diferencial (ID) and is easily identified as the device with a test button marked ‘T’ or ‘Test’. Back in 1992 in the UK, the 16th edition of the IEE Electrical Regulations changed the name of the long standing Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) to the Residual Current Device (RCD) in an attempt to more suitably describe its function.

The RCD protects all the wiring and connected electrical appliances in the home. It safe guards against leaking electricity by automatically disconnecting the electricity supply in the event of a fault. The RCD must have a minimum rating of 30 mAmps (that’s a very small leakage current), which is marked on the device. In the event of earth leakage rising above 30 mAmps anywhere in the installation, the RCD trips-out and will not allow you to switch it back on until the fault is cleared or isolated. This can be inconvenient and a cause of major irritation but may just have saved a life.

An RCD differs from a Circuit Breaker in that it is not a fuse.

A Circuit Breaker or fuse protects against overloading and short circuit protection, whilst an RCD protects against earth leakage.

To have one device that protects against all three faults is very expensive, so it’s more practical to have separate devices.

RCDs are very sensitive and they sit nice ‘n quiet in your Consumer Unit (that’s a Fusebox in old money) and constantly monitor your electricity supply. When it detects a leak of electricity, normally caused by damp or water ingress, running down an unintended path it disconnects the electricity supply very quickly, significantly reducing the risk of death or serious injury.

It prevents conductive fixtures in the home, e.g. metal appliances, stainless steel draining boards, shower heads, copper pipework, etc. from becoming live.

Property owners should regularly test the RCD (or RCDs) every three months. If your RCD does not switch off the electricity supply when the test button is pressed, or if it does not reset, contact an Approved Electrician. Clearing up worries about Spanish inheritance ONE OF the questions that’s most frequently asked in our offices is – how much inheritance tax will I have to pay?

We receive enquiries every week from the recently bereaved who are not only coming to terms with the death of a close relative but also the fact that inheritance in Spain can be a complicated and costly matter.

Fortunately, our inheritance department are able to respond quickly given the number of variations there can be in an inheritance tax calculation. We have to know where your property is in Spain, your relationship to the deceased and his/ her resident status as well as the status and intentions of the inheritors themselves.

The questions don’t stop there. Should we sell the property? When and how do we inform the bank? Will the utility charges continue to be paid?

How much will all this cost? We use our years of experience and understanding of Spanish inheritance law to help worried inheritors receive the answers they need.

THE COST OF THE PROCESS Inevitably the cost of inheritance must be discussed at some point. Inheritors are usually particularly anxious to hear that inheritance tax, if due, must be paid first before property can change hands. This can be a particular worry if the inheritors were hoping to sell the property quickly.

The first step is to provide a cost estimate to the inheritors advising them of the legal fees, external costs (Notary fees, Land Registry etc.) and inheritance tax to pay. When the total cost is itemised we can begin to discuss the different options for covering the expense. Once the cost is spread between family members and allowances are taken into account, the inheritance tax may not be as steep as they first feared.

INHERITANCE BETWEEN PARTNERS It often comes as a surprise for Spanish property owners that when one of a couple dies the property does not automatically transfer to the other and neither does the bank account. The inheritance process has to be officially embarked upon, as

it would if you were leaving it to a more distant relative. Even a joint bank account requires official closure and half the contents will be frozen until the transfer is complete.

However, there is good news too. Relatives are often relieved to hear that it is possible for Spanish inheritance to be completed without them coming to Spain. Through a power of attorney, arrangements can be made with as little disturbance to the grieving family as possible.

Joint Custody Valencian Law - Is it applicable to Spanish national children born of a foreign mother?

I AM British and live in Spain. I have a son (under legal age) and his father is Spanish. My son was born and lives in Denia, Alicante, and has Spanish and British nationality. As far as I know in the Valencian Community the law states that for Valencian citizens the custody must be always shared between parents. Does this law affect my son? Is it relevant that he is really young?

FIRSTLY, AS stated on the Alicante’s Province Audience Court Order number 569/2012, the Valencian Law known as ‘joint custody law’ Act 5/2011, applies to minors with Valencian Civil Neighbourhood, (similar to the concept ‘domicile’) so it is necessary to determine the minor’s civil neighbourhood.

In your case, because the parents have different civil neighbourhoods, the minor’s civil neighbourhood could be determined by his place of birth, so if your son has Spanish nationality and was born in Alicante, it could be understood that he has Valencian Civil Neighbourhood, and this law could apply to him. Regarding the

joint or shared custody, as stated also on the Alicante’s Province Audience Decision number 41/2013, generally the rule is joint custody but this is not automatic and some factors must be taken in account like: a) minors age (especially in the case of breastfed infants), b) opinion of the minors ( if they are over 12 years old), c) time spent with the family in the past, d) social, psychology & doctor’s reports, e) possibility of conciliating work and family by the parents, etc. Therefore, generally joint custody will be agreed. Only in exceptional cases for the reasons given would the custody would be awarded just to one parent. If your son is really young, you should know that the young age by

itself is not enough reason to deny joint custody. The Alicante Province Audience (decision 500/2012), has also modified a previous court’s order, stating that the father being capable to look after the minor, despite the young age of the infant, meant the custody must be shared, as this is the general rule. Therefore, although you are foreigner in Spain, if your son is a Spanish national and has Valencian Civil Neighbourhood, the law known as ‘Valencian Share Custody’ could be applicable to your case.If you need legal advice on Family Law: divorce, separation, compensation, children maintenance, etc. in Spain, with application of Spanish or foreign law, we can help you.

Comments thrown about the rooms are things like: Invest all you money in America, the Market is as high as it has ever been and now it’s going to get better. Japan is finally getting its act together, China is a boom waiting to happen, UK everyone has a different opinion and Europe?

Well forget that! These are the same people that have been telling everyone to stick their money in emerging markets for the last 12 months after the sharp rises at the beginning of 2012: as of yet you are lucky to be breaking even during that period.

All of the above tells me one thing: nobody really knows what is going to happen! I have been advising on investments for going on 25 years now and the best three pieces of advice I would give anyone is: DIVERSIFY, DIVERSIFY and DIVERSIFY. Do not put all your hard earned money in one place on the basis of being told about an amazing opportunity.

I have seen numerous clients over recent months who did put all their eggs in one basket (albeit through an adviser previously seen) suffer the consequences. If an adviser offers you one single investment for your money – run a mile or at least get a second opinion There are opportunities out there so try and get a small piece of each one, mitigate risk and go for modest returns. Do not be greedy over the short term and DIVERSIFY, DIVERSIFY DIVERSIFY! Stage set for drama festival

SHOWCASING THE cream of amateur dramatics on the Marina Alta, the curtain goes up on the Costa Blanca Drama Festival on Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th of June.

Now in its fifth year, the event raises money for the Children’s Drama Fund – which has so far been able to provide drama classes for children in Orba; supply a Spanish drama teacher for Summer School; provide DVDs in Spanish and English to the Les Rotes Children’s Home in Denia and organise and pay for the youngsters to go to the pantomime in Alcalali.

Taking part this year are Javea Players, Careline Theatre and the Monte Pego Theatre Company. In previous years audiences have enjoyed watching a diverse range of theatre in such a short time.

Conflicting articles about property prices WITH MANY conflicting media articles about property prices it must be difficult for prospective purchasers to finalise a decision as to whether or not to invest overseas. The truth is, as with most reported situations, we can never be entirely certain of any situation and therefore must make many important judgements based solely on our personal circumstances and a little gut instinct.

Benidorm wants casinos

BENIDORM IS pressing the Ministry of Finance for the green light to open casinos in hotels throughout the city. A report sent to Generalitat Finance Minister Juan Carlos Moragues points out that the inclusion of gambling facilities could generate significant profits and create around 1,400 jobs. Talks involving Benidorm’s Mayor Agustin Navarro; the president of Hosbec Antonio Mayor; the Finance Minister and other tour industry representatives took place this week. By Irena Bodnarec, BenidormAllYearRound.com ONE OF the most picturesque ‘must see’ places to visit when holidaying in Benidorm has to be Guadalest. Located around 600 metres above sea level in the mountains it is the most visited village in the whole of Spain - and once there you can understand why.

Don’t worry if you are here on an all-inclusive package with no car: get the bus! The No 16 goes from the centre of Benidorm every day. The journey time from the triangle is around 1 hour and 10 minutes - not bad considering it’s about 50km away, arriving in Guadalest at approximately 11am. The return bus departs at 1.30pm, giving you a good two hours in Guadalest - which to be honest is ample. My only advice is don’t go on a Tuesday as Altea market is on and the journey will be incredibly slow up till then.

Once in Guadalest, you can stop at one of the numerous cafes or bars for refreshments - there is even an English tea room serving an all day English fry-up! As you approach the ‘citadel’ there is the obligatory photographer taking pictures

of your group - available as a framed print or printed onto a key ring. These are both ready for when you walk back down ... a bit like snappy snaps! They are not at all pushy so don’t feel obliged to purchase.

There are four ‘museums’ to visit and many gift shops selling souvenirs which are a delight to browse through... everyone leaves with a little something - me just a few more ‘somethings’ than my husband wanted! ... and finally you get to the breath-taking cliff edge and get to look down at the reservoir - which is the most amazing turquoise colour. This reservoir supplies drinking water to Benidorm and the surrounding areas. When there are forest fires nearby the fire brigade water planes skim over the reservoir to scoop up water to put out the flames! It really is a picture opportunity as you can see. An enjoyable half day out and a total change from the hustle and bustle of Benidorm - definitely a trip I would recommend.

No begging in Benidorm

BENIDORM IS cracking down on street beggars, changing its bylaws to allow penalties of 750€ - 3,000€ to be levied on people caught asking for hand-outs, particularly in the centre of town in streets that are popular with tourists.

The City Council plans to eliminate various forms of begging practices including the use of children, dogs and other animals; the selling of products at traffic lights that impede the free movement of traffic and particularly beggars that are part of an organised group. Street entertainers that are authorised by the council, however, including musicians, will be exempt and will continue to be a popular feature in tourist areas.

Dramatic BASE jump in Benidorm THE FINALS of the sixth annual BASE jump Extreme World Championships planned for this weekend at the Gran Hotel Bali in La Cala have disappointingly been temporarily suspended due to high winds.

22-year-old Maria Steinmayr of Austria, with ambitions to turn professional and placed overall third after her first jump, knew something was terribly amiss as soon as she pulled the parachute cord – the steering cords were back to front!

the balcony of a room on the tenth floor, blood gushing from her face, arms and legs. She pulled the pack containing the parachute off her back and crawled into an empty room fortunately the glass balcony doors had been left conveniently open!

Maria crawled along the corridor banging on doors for help. A British couple opened their door, horrified at the state she was in. Maria cannot praise them enough. They quickly helped her in and used bath towels to stem the bleeding until medics from the Hospital Clinica Benidorm arrived around five Moment of impact minutes later.

X-rays revealed that Maria’s nose was broken and would require surgery. She also sustained cuts to her face, arms and legs along with extensive bruising.

Maria has already completed more than 230 jumps globally and is to take part in a competition in Norway in three weeks’ time - depending on how quickly she recovers from her injuries! She said that she had a camera on her helmet for the Benidorm jump but it had just run out of batteries - mind you, would she really have wanted to watch it?

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Step by Step Spanish -36 ABOUT SIX months ago, or more, we looked at the conditional tense (I would …) and we learnt how to combine it with a simple form to make a complete sentence. We learnt how to say things like “I would buy that car, but I don’t have enough money”.

WHAT WE veered away from is this construction: “I would buy that car if I had enough money”. Of course in English they both look equally straightforward, but the second sentence is considerably more complex.

Actually it is odd in English as well. Look at it again: “I would buy that car if I HAD enough money”. “Had” is a form of the verb “have” that is generally regarded as a past tense (Today I have - yesterday I had). However, here it is referring to some other time, a rather indefinable time, but certainly not in the past. In fact “if I had enough money” is referring to a hypothetical time that does not exist. I don’t have enough money to buy that car - I would buy it in the nonexistent circumstance of having enough money.

If you know anything about Spanish verbs, and if you’ve been following my articles for a while you ought to, you will now be fearing the worst. This hypothetical “if I had enough money” cannot possibly be dealt with by a simple past tense in Spanish. Indeed you are right.

The truth is that it is expressed in the Imperfect Subjunctive. And if that hasn’t scared you enough, here is the sentence in Spanish.

“Compraría ese coche si tuviera bastante dinero”. Now you know why the only form we learnt before was “Compraría ese coche, pero no tengo bastante dinero”. Why make things difficult for yourself if you

can say things in a simpler way?

However, the time has come to tackle the imperfect subjunctive.

You may also remember they we spent some time on the present subjunctive a couple of months ago. I explained then that the subjunctive tenses in general (they are actually referred to as the “subjunctive mood”) do not span the normal tense times covered by the usual (indicative mood) tenses. In other words, if we are in the realms of hypothesis and speculation the divisions are blurred between past, present and future. In fact there are only two principle subjunctive tenses – loosely called the “present subjunctive” and the “imperfect subjunctive”.

The present subjunctive, you will no doubt remember, is formed from the first person singular of the present tense (tengo – tenga etc.)

The imperfect subjunctive is formed from the third person plural of the past simple tense (also called pretérito or past historic tense). We’ve covered this as well, way back in what now is my Step by Step Spanish volume III. Next week we’ll get our teeth into this, but for now let’s remind ourselves of the past simple tense of the verb tener (to have) – tuve, tuviste, tuvo, tuvimos, tuvisteis, tuvieron. “Tuvieron” gives us our root from which we get “tuviera” as in “si tuviera bastante dinero” – if I had enough money.

The Cold Cold Ground IT IS the year of the IRA hunger strikes in the Maze Prison. Bobby Sands and Frankie Hughes are dead and Belfast is burning. Visit Toledo and Extremadura NO CITY in Spain has played a greater role in the development of the Spanish nation than Toledo. Situated right in the very heart of the country, this heavily fortified city has seen the passing of the Holy Roman Empire, of the somewhat eccentric Goths, the Muslim Moors and the Christian Monarchs.

In a multicultural society lived Jews, Greeks, Muslims, Phoenicians and Christians. A rollercoaster of historical events has shaped this city into something spectacular. Even its position - built on a rock surrounded by the River Tajo (Tagus) - places it amongst one of the most visibly memorable cities in Spain.

Still surrounded by the ancient city walls of yester year, it is easy to imagine the triumphant Alphonso VI riding side by side with El Cid as they entered the city in 1085 to replace the defeated Moors. El Greco, the famous Greek artist, also made Toledo his home - a home which can still be visited. In the city you can see the original of many of his paintings including his masterpiece depicting the heavenly intervention of Saints at the burial of the Count of Orgaz. (See if you can spot the self portrait of the artist himself amongst the crowd attending the burial).

Narrow, cobbled streets unchanged for centuries lead the visitor from the buzzing centre of the town, Zocodover Square, to the massive Toledo cathedral towering

above surrounding buildings. This cathedral, the very centre of the Spanish inquisition, became the most important and iconic centre of the Catholic resurgence in medieval Spain.

Its sheer size and grandeur cannot fail to impress the visitor.

Leaving Toledo via the Ancient Biagra gates, a drive through the fields of Extremadura brings us to Trujillo, a town which until the heady days of the Spanish conquest of the Americas baked sleepily in the sun, its inhabitants struggling to survive in a hostile and difficult environment. The discovery of America offered the opportunity for adventurers to escape from this daily struggle and try their luck in these new territories. With ingenuity, determination and often of violent aggression against the inhabitants of the Americas many of the sons of this small town returned hugely wealthy.

The evidence of this wealth shows in the castles, churches and mansion built by them on their return to Spain.

From Trujillo a half hour drive takes us to the city of Caceres - a different sort of town to Trujillo, but again, surprisingly for a landlocked town, much of its wealth was created by seafaring adventurers returning from the Americas with gold, spices and silks.

another completely different city: Aranjuez, its fortunes influenced particularly by the desire of the medieval royals to have a place where the pleasures of the country could be enjoyed yet near the new Capital city of Madrid. Life tech Screen crashing with Aunty Virus

HI AUNTY: For the last couple of months I have had a problem with my screen crashing and going blank. Variably it can be once in a day, or once in ten days, showing a variety of colours: green, white, blue, and on one occasion red. I have Advanced System Care which shows my computer health to be ‘good’, so any ideas what is the cause/remedy for this? Thanks. If it is a laptop, perhaps you have loose connections between the base and the screen?

Maybe it is the start of the graphic cards going?

Maybe you do not have the most up-to-date drivers for the graphics card?

Maybe your screen is simply ‘going’.

HI AUNTY: I have had Google Chrome for a long time and from the icon on my desktop have been able to click and the igoogle page has opened directly. Recently I uninstalled Google Chrome, due to a possible problem, and then reinstalled it. I had to go through various actions to get it to work normally and open but now it is usable, except when I first click the Google Chrome icon, user control asks for ‘permission to allow the programme’. This did not occur previously. Is there a way to open this programme without needing to give permission? Ray-pc Aunty says: Go to the Chrome icon on your desktop (or wherever) and then rightclick and choose ‘Properties’. Under the ‘Compatibility’ tab untick the ‘Run this program as an Administrator’ box.

Hopefully Chrome will no longer ask for permission.

Let the Saturday night battle commence!

SATURDAY NIGHT TV has been a war zone between ITV and the BBC for as long as I can remember, and with The Voice’s viewing figures getting battered stupid in the most spectacular fashion by BGT, the bit of goss I picked up last week could well mean that Aunty has pulled a giant rabbit out of the hat.

The word on the street is that come the summer the Beeb will be running a game show that will be hosted by puppets.

Yes, there’s no need to read that again, a game show hosted by puppets, and the giant rabbit I am referring to is that the puppets will created by The Jim Henson Company, the maestros of the genre.

Okay, I hear what you’re saying, we’ve already got a load of Muppets on TV, and you’re not far wrong as it goes, but when you consider that The Muppets had us all glued to the screen from 1976 – 1981 with Kermit and Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo the Great, Pepe the King Prawn and Rizzo the Rat, you get to thinking this move by the BBC is a bit of a goodie.

Just so as it’s not too surreal Vernon Kay, Tess Daly, Claudia Winkleman and Gary Lineker will be among the humans taking part in the game show part of the programme, facing challenges set by a different puppet in a bid to win money for their chosen charities. The main host will be long-chinned puppet character Dougie Colon – pronounced ‘cologne’ – who is being touted as ‘the new face of Saturday night TV’. Then when you add in characters like a bull named ‘Udders McGhee’, science expert ‘Dr Strabismus’, mental agility whiz ‘Ian the Armadillo’, chances are the tired old talent show Saturday night lock down could well get the royal order of the boot.

SAM MENDES, who said after directing ‘Skyfall’ he would never direct another Bond movie, has now emerged as the current favourite to be sitting in the chair again come next year, but it is to another issue that I want to take you today. First off, let me pose you a question: who is the oldest female Bond girl, and what age was she? … Clue … she appeared in one of the big 60’s movies … and so to the reason for the question.

According to the Daily Mail when the 24th Bond movie is made next year Penelope Cruz, should she get the role, will become the oldest ever Bond girl. Penelope was born in a suburb of Madrid and won her first big part at just 18 playing the lead in art-house Spanish film ‘Jamón, Jamón’.

The now famous source told the Daily Mail: “The producers have tried to get Penelope before, but she has never been available because of other commitments. She’ll be a great Bond girl ... Bond girls are always brainy as well as sexy, and that’s totally Penelope.” … right on brudder! …

Cod fish cakes with cheat’s chilli sauce I MADE these fish cakes with cod, but any flaky fish will do. Unusually, this version is baked in the oven rather than fried, and this gives a crispy outside with a soft crumbly centre. The sauce was a bit of an after-thought, but worked quite well. If you don’t have all the ingredients to hand, a good blob of tomato ketchup would be acceptable, as would a dollop of mayonnaise. Serve the fishcakes with a green salad or green vegetables such as broccoli and French beans.

• 350g cod fillet • 2 large potatoes, peeled, cut into chunks and boiled until just cooked • 2-4 spring onions, finely sliced (or ½ an onion) • The grated rind of a lemon • A handful of fresh parsley, chopped • Salt and pepper FOR THE SAUCE • 2 tbls tomato ketchup • 1 tsp sweet chilli sauce • The juice of half a lemon • A splash of dry sherry 1. Pre heat the oven to 200°C. 2. Poach the fish in a little stock, until just cooked. Allow to cool then remove any skin and break the fish into flakes.

Reserve the stock.

3. Mash the potatoes while still warm, then stir in the lemon rind, parsley and sliced onion. Season with salt and

pepper then fold in the fish, taking care not to break it up. Add a little of the stock from the fish if the mixture seems too dry. Form the mixture into 4 round patties (a metal pastry cutter is useful for this – press the mixture into the ring and then slide it off). Place the fish cakes onto a greased, non-stick baking tray and place in the oven for 15-20 minutes.

4. Meanwhile make the sauce by combining all the ingredients in a small jug. Place the cooked fish cakes on warmed serving plates and pour the sauce over and around.

Serves: 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes

Inflammation: getting the source BEFORE THINKING about getting to the source of inflammation it is important that we understand why it happens and how inflammation helps the human body. Commonly known as swelling, inflammation is always a sign of distress or damage to body tissue.

THE OVERALL objective of inflammation is to repair the damaged tissue. The process first begins by allowing local blood vessels to dilate. This in turn allows an array of specialised blood cells to migrate to the area and clean up the damaged cells before repairing them.

Low-level inflammation is constantly happening in our bodies to repair low-level damage. However, it is when this inflammation reaches a certain level that symptoms begin to appear. These

symptoms include pain, redness and the accumulation of fluid in the damaged area. If the cause of the swelling was a one time event then the body will prove to be effective at controlling this. However if the cause of the inflammation persists, measures should be taken.

Let’s take the human spine for example. We will all have woken up one morning after a bad night sleep with neck pain or lower back pain, and throughout the day the body would take care of this. But what happens if for many years we sleep in a bad position?

Or day after day we sit slouched on the couch or in front of the computer?

This is where a more chronic type of inflammation develops. Many treatments are effective at treating the symptom of inflammation, such as massage or pain killers.

At the charity’s meeting on 6th June, Jeanne Stokes and Ann Vernon were presented with flowers and a lifetime Membership Certificate to mark their respective 22 and 19 years of service with HELP. Shirley Penter, Volunteer of the Month for April, whose work in the community was recognised as “service above and beyond the norm” was presented with a bottle of wine and a certificate. And

The Cabanon reopens after a makeover

The restaurant has reopened after a dramatic refurbishment

THE CABANON restaurant in Villajoyosa has been under the same ownership since 1996. Closed for the last six months, it has just re-opened after a dramatic refurbishment. The result is a beautiful restaurant serving fine food in a glorious setting.

The Cabanon is situated just off the beach in the old town, and Franck and Elisabeth have remodelled and extended the restaurant to very high

standard with a large terrace for the ultimate al fresco dining experience, offering lovely views to the beach.

The menu is varied with a large selection of hot and cold starters, pastas, paellas, meat and fish dishes and a wine list that perfectly complements the cuisine.

It is good to see this restaurant open again as it has been a long term attraction for many visitors

and residents of all nationalities for many years. Those with particularly good memories will recall that it even featured in an episode of East Enders!

Choir’s charity concert

Festival fun

By Jack Troughton THE SECOND Benitachell International Festival is being held on Sunday 23rd June after being postponed because of bad weather.

The Santa Maria Magdelena School hosts the event which starts at 11.30am and is officially opened by Mayor Josep Femenia Mas at 11.45am.

A collaboration between Benitachell Arts Centre, the town hall and the school, the event has taken months to prepare and organisers and hoping the gods will be kind with the weather next weekend.

On stage there will be traditional Spanish dancing, Flamenco, and live music from The Hoaxx, SFM, and MP7.

And there will also be over 40 stalls selling gifts at bargain prices, beauty treatments, and ‘nearly new’ stands.

And for the children there is electronic football shooting, a bouncy castle, face painting, Slush Puppies, games and a children’s entertainment company.

And visitors can enjoy international food on the day from sausage and bacon butties to paella and burgers – as well as freshly baked bread and cakes and a bar.

Raising the bar

Raising money for Pedregeur-based ADIMA – the association helping disabled people from all over the Marina Alta – the event made 1,500€ 12 months ago.

If it’s your birthday this week

War and Peace in miniature

by Keith Nicol THE VISTA Alegre Exhibition centre has turned itself into a mini-museum for a month with the First Exhibition of Static Military Modeling. The event was officially opened on Saturday by Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon accompanied by members from the Town Council, Graham Knight the Director of the Foreign Residents Office and former members of the armed forces from both Britain and Spain.

This first exhibition is a follow on from the success of the model boat exhibition held earlier in the year and is organized by the Torrevieja Association of Static Military Modelers and will remain open until the 7th July 2013. The exhibition features more than 170 models and dioramas of tanks, planes, helicopters, Legion, Spanish Army, World War II, Spanish Civil War plus a large collection of guns and miniature vehicles from the different Spanish police forces. The largest item on display is a striking Guardia Civil motorcycle followed by large radio controlled models of the C-101 aircraft used by the Spanish Eagle Patrol.

Around the room there is a collection of Royal Guard uniforms, Guardia Civil, Spanish Legion, Navy, Marine, Army and Army flight suits, flags, banners, scripts, helmets and berets from the three Spanish armies. All participants in the exhibition were presented with a diploma `of recuierdo for

their cooperation. Members of the various British ex-services associations were there complete with their standards, while the standard from the Royal British Legion has been left on display for the entire exhibition period. Admission to the exhibition is free. It is closed on Mondays

Super economical Seat WE LIVE in extremely straitened times where most countries, including the UK, continue to accumulate debt.

The prospect of a career for life has become virtually non-existent. UK house prices have risen to such an extent that first time buyers are now nearly 40 years old.

In fact when my father was my age he borrowed three times his salary to purchase a beautiful four bed detached property in need of updating with two acres of land in a picturesque part of Dorset: that would barely get me a one bed house in a rundown part of the next county now. Why has life become such a struggle? Most of us feel that there’s less money with which we have to do more.

Consequently, the hard-up motorist craves a good deal and Seat realises this. It has responded with its Toledo, the family hatchback priced from under 15,000€ to just 21,000€. And its diesel model also happens to be super economical. Thank goodness – perhaps life is not so bad after all.

Named after the historic Spanish city, this is an extremely sensible car for our times. With its clean lines it is one to be proud of - the 1.6TDI SE test model significantly enhanced by its rich burgundy finish.

Sharing the same chassis as the Skoda Rapid, which I tested only a few weeks ago, both models clearly share a good deal. This comes as no surprise as Spain-based Seat is owned by Volkswagen, which also owns Skoda.

The rear wash/wipe on both models has been borrowed from the Audi A1. The washer is built

into the wiper and effectively projects a jet of spray across the window unlike any other wiper I have come across. Buyers pay a premium for such innovative features on the Audi, too. Inside, the dashboard is very similar to the Rapid with the same layout and controls. Then there’s the good build quality and the hardwearing interior trim.

Its seats could do with being more supportive, especially over longer journeys.

Generally it has a competent if bland ride.

There’s a folding armrest in the centre of the cabin, which is useful for long motorway runs when gear changes aren’t required.

At speed the Toledo does buffet a bit in the wind but this is quickly forgotten when realising that this little gem returns over 50mpg at 70mph. Engine

stop/start helps this model easily cover 700 miles on a tank of fuel. It’s pretty gutsy, too, hitting 60mph from standstill in just over 10 seconds. The fivespeed box is as reasonable as you might expect.

Families need a massive boot and they won’t be disappointed with the 550 litres of luggage space as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz.

The Toledo, just like the Skoda Rapid, makes an ideal family proposition.

Fun in the sun Noel’s world of golf

IN RECENT years RTN Golf Club has held a foursomes golf league for members throughout July and August.

In response to requests from our members this year the fun will continue but in a different format.

This summer we will stage a Pairs Better Ball League for our readers to participate in. The competition will be staged every Tuesday during July and August with the six best scores from each pair counting towards the winning score. This format will be more fun for our members and provide competitive golf in a popular format. In the event of a tie on scores the winners will be those who score the best on the final day or second from last day going back until we find a clear winner.

To make the format work players will need to be able to play in at least six of the eight weeks over which the competition will run. Those who cannot find a partner can still enter as we will try to pair them with another single entrant. Depending upon the number of entrants we will give prizes of golf balls each week for the best pair of the week.

The overall winners of the RTN Summer Golf League

will be presented with a beautiful glass trophy at the end of the final round of matches in August. The overall winners will also receive golf related prizes, the value of which will be dependent upon how many players enter but the minimum prize the winners will receive is a dozen golf balls each.

We also hope to be able to provide prizes to the best mixed pair and the best same sex pair at the end of the league. Players should play off the lowest handicap they have whether that be from a society or RFEG. Adjustments will be made to handicaps each week in accordance with EGA methods of calculation.

So the chance is there for all our golfing readers to play fun golf in the sun with the chance to win some superb prizes.

Alicante Golf has offered a superb price of just 150€ per player to play in the league including buggy with a green fee payable each week of just 7€ per player.

End-of-season friendly Mazarron FC 2: Holbrook Sports FC 3

THIS ENTERTAINING end-of-season friendly was Mazarron’s first ever game against a UK team. The visitors, Holbrook Sports FC, play in the English East Midlands Counties Premier Division and have taken part in both the FA Cup & FA Vase competitions this season.

Mazarron began with five of their regular players on the bench, giving some of the fringe players a rare start.

The game began quietly but Holbrook took the lead after 23 minutes when a splendid cross from the right was turned in by Aaron Brady.

Mazarron came more into the game. and then a through ball from Poyato found Alfonso whose shot was well saved. A defensive error led to a second goal for Holbrook five minutes before half time.

Mazarron made several substitutions at half time and when Diego junior was brought down in the area following an excellent run, they were awarded a penalty. At the players’ insistence, retiring captain Diego took the spot kick but the keeper made the save.

Mazarron were awarded a second penalty after 70 minutes. Alfonso’s kick was saved but he managed to force the rebound home to make the score 1-2.

By Keith Nicol Last week Torrevieja’s Councillor for Sports, Luis María Pizana, and the President of the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation (RFEN), Fernando Carpena, announced the Absolute Synchronized Swimming Championship of Spain, to be held from 21st to 23rd June in the Olympic size pool at the ‘Infanta Cristina’.

Luis María Pizana thanked President of RFEN for their “vote of confidence in returning to the city of Torrevieja for these sporting events of national and international importance.”

The competition schedule is: Friday 21st June from 10:00am to 1:30pm and from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. On Saturday 22nd June from 10:30am to 12:00 noon and from 5:30pm to 7:00pm and on Sunday June 23, from 10:00am to 12:30pm.

Fernando Carpena explained that there are two championships with their respective classifications: XV ASISA Spain Synchro-Synchronized Swimming Trophy, International Open Championship in which the Absolute National Team will compete with teams from France, Britain, Slovakia, Germany, Colombia and Mexico. This is the final preparatory competition with Absolute National Team before the 2013 Barcelona World Championships expected to be held from 19th July and the Spanish Championship, in which the best Spanish clubs with the highest representation of the Spanish synchro, compete for medals at stake in the various disciplines of synchronized swimming: Technical Duet, Duet Free, Technical Equipment, Free Equipment and Combined.

Vila lose gold rush

By Jack Troughton LA VILA senior men’s rugby sevens side narrowly lost the ‘Copa de Oro’ in to a ‘sudden death’ try in extra time last Saturday.

Competing in the Valencian Community Rugby Sevens against CAU Valencia, both teams were tied at 17 points each after the two seven minute periods of play – a battle given extra spice as two former La Vila men faced up to their old team mates from the Marina Baixa.

At Valencia’s Quatre Carreres ground, both sets of players were showing signs of exhaustion after giving their all in normal time and La Vila came close to victory on more than one occasion and wasted two key chances to score and lift the Gold Cup. However, it was CAU who scored the elusive try to snatch the game.

The tournament gave La Vila players a chance to show their progression in both technical and tactical areas and the squad enjoyed the chance ot play attacking running rugby.

In the 78th minute a well hit shot from Cecilio brought a great save from the Holbrook keeper. Two minutes later Alfonso scored his second of the game from close range to bring the scores level at 2—2.

Both teams had chances to win the game but Mazarron gifted Holbrook the winning goal when following a mistake by young keeper Ruben, Sam Ridgard slotted the ball into an empty net. The game, sponsored by Dave Chapman of the Costa Café, Camposol, was excellent to watch and played in good spirits.

Luckily it did not materialize. (How the weather is changing this year…) The fishing was still patchy though, with several good weights but the rest of the field struggling to break 20 kilos.

ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS: Supplied by Terry Screen The 11th and final round of the Spring Series was fished on the Eden Canal on the 4th June. Although a lot of the pegs are now fishable, a lot more work is needed to be done and hopefully the four clubs will now work together to get this done.

At the beginning of the match the water was pulling through and ran off about 8 inches, but when the flow stops the bites tail off making the fishing hard going.

The water is also a muddy colour and not the normal green algae colour - also with the weather picking up the snakes and terrapins are beginning to show up again.
