Hero calls for visible police presence HAVE-A-GO HERO Pedro Verdu – who was beaten up by thieves after going to the aid of British tourists being robbed – has joined the campaign calling for more uniformed police on the beat in Benidorm. By Jack Troughton THE RINCON de Loix area of the resort, one of the busiest tourist areas, has become a notorious haunt of pickpockets, prostitutes, and ‘peamen’, who use a visual gambling scam to take cash from holidaymakers. However, violent muggings are rare. Pedro, fellow businessmen and residents are calling for the Town Hall to increase security by stepping up the number of police patrols on the streets. The 28-year-old shopkeeper intervened to stop a British couple falling prey to pickpockets outside the Mini Martet in Avenida Filipinas but was attacked by two of the three-strong gang. His courage cost him a cut eyebrow needing several stitches and a serious hematoma in one eye – the shiner still visible four weeks later. Pedro’s bravery has since been acknowledged by charity HELP International of Benidorm, which has given him a “token” reward – the shopkeeper later donating the money to EMAUS. And this week he was once again trying to help tourists from becoming another crime statistic as another band of thieves descended on three young British girls. He told RTN: “I saw these three pickpockets moving in on the girls – I shouted, the thieves saw me and ran. But if I had done nothing, those girls would have been robbed.” Pedro said it was a similar situation a month ago. “I was in the doorway of the shop and saw the old British couple walking passed.
