Dad dies in ticket row BENIDORM BUSINESSMAN Raymond Reula died shortly after a bad tempered argument over ticket prices to one of the resort’s top events, it was claimed this week.

by Jack Troughton THE FATHER-OF-TWO and owner of the 3C’s Nursing Agency was allegedly struck at the Space nightclub during a heated dispute over the cost of attending last weekend’s Electro Beach Festival.

A 50-year-old man has been charged with involuntary homicide – manslaughter – and released on bail. A post-mortem revealed Ray, 34, suffered a broken neck. Family and friends yesterday (Thursday) attended a funeral service for Ray. He was later buried at a family plot in Finestrat dressed in his beloved Liverpool FC strip.

On Thursday evening last week the emergency services were called to his Benidorm

home after the alarm was raised by his wife Clare. Ray, who leaves two-year-old son Lucas and one-year-old daughter Sienna, returned home and complained of feeling unwell and had gone to lie down but was later found “unresponsive” as the alarm was raised.

TICKET Ray’s mother Sue Reula told RTN how Ray went to buy tickets for the event at a bank ATM through the Ticket Master system. Unfortunately, the machine was out of order and he was advised by bank staff to go to Space. He drove to the club with a friend.

Pirates in turf war

STREET SELLERS touting pirate goods are engaged in vicious infighting over territory in the Costa Blanca resort of Albir.

A clampdown on the illicit trade in Calpe has seen many ‘lookee lookee’ men head south with their fake designer goods and plague beachfront bars and restaurants.

But ‘regulars’ in Albir have strongly reacted to the invasion – leading to arguments and sometimes, fisticuffs.

Many businesses once tolerant of street salesmen have banned them from entering their premises in the hope of protecting their valued summer trade from being “pestered”.

One bar owner told RTN: “We are not allowing them to come in – they have started to shout and wail – but there is just too many

of them.

“It is not really a problem for us in the bars but a problem for them. Everyone has just got a little fed up with the situation.”

Another businessman added: “They are just arguing with each other. There has been a bit of pushing and shoving and a bit of a fist fight on occasion.”

INCREASE It was claimed that because of the increasing numbers of street salesmen “there is one appearing in my bar every five minutes”.

Internet site Trip Advisor has begun to reflect the opinions of visitors fed up with being constantly approached by the pirates.

Toddler drowns

A 17-month-old toddler died after falling into the pool of a Marina Alta villa on Monday despite desperate attempts at resuscitation by the child’s family and an ambulance crew. The baby was in the care of adult relatives at home in Moraira. It is understood the gate through the safety fence surrounding the pool was not properly secured and realising the child was missing, family members found his body in the water. And a 40-year-old Madrid woman also drowned on Monday on a beach in Alcossebre in Castellon Province.

She was discovered floating unconscious in the sea, brought to the beach where attempts were made to revive her but she was later pronounced dead at a local health centre. A total of 22 people – 17 adults and five children – have drowned at beaches and in swimming pools within the Valencia Community since June according to official figures.

Vote protester marches on

by Jack Troughton WAR VETERAN Harry Shindler is headed for Brussels in his ongoing battle in a campaign to restore voting rights for expats.

The 91-year-old is one of thousands of campaigners calling for British citizens across the world to be able to cast a vote in UK elections outside of the current 15 year rule – under current legislation the limit on the franchise for people moving abroad.

Harry, who lives in Italy, will meet with a team headed by Michael Shotter, legal advisor to Vice President of the EU, Viviane Reding.

She has already spoken out on the need for all expats to retain a vote in their home country and wants all EU citizens to keep a right to viote in the national elections of their country of origin. And in the year of the European Citizen, she maintains that losing the ballot was “a punishment” for taking advantage of

the EU’s freedom of movement treaty.

This week Harry lodged an appeal against a European Court of Human Rights ruling upholding the British Government’s limitation on voting. Successive governments have argued expats were no longer connected to the UK and should not take part in elections – despite many still paying tax and having limited voting powers in their adopted countries.

Harry, who served in North Africa in World War Two and took pat in the allied landing at Anzio in Southern Italy and the liberation of Rome, settled in the Mediterranean country with his Italian wife in 1982.

SUFFRAGETTE He said: “I am convinced we will win, the same way the suffragettes were 100 years ago. The case that an expat has cut ties with Britain when they leave is no longer true.

“Thanks to email, mobile phones, the Channel Tunnel and aeroplanes, one does not cut their ties.” His lawyers, Rome-based Oliver and Partners, are handling Harry’s appeal asking for the issue to be refererred to the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights and a ruling from a panel of 17 judges.

The firm’s Charlotte Oliver commented: “The fact that Vice-President Viviane Reding said that she would give her full backing to the campaign of expats to preserve their voting rights, and that it is a fundamental issue in the 2013 EU Year of the Citizen, is enough evidence in my view of how very significant this issue is.

“We are very confident that the case will be referred to the grand Chamber.”

ADIF shocks the court RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE organisation ADIF has appeared in the Magistrate Court No 3 in Santiago de Compostela to answer questions regarding the tragic train crash in Santiago on 24th July that claimed the lives of 79 people. Train driver Francisco José Garzón has been charged with being the main cause of the accident but investigation has revealed that a ‘lack of preventative security measures on the track’ contributed to the crash. Judge Luis Aláez reproached ADIF for not installing basic speed beacons on the stretch of track where the derailment occurred and asked ADIF’s legal representative who was responsible for safety at ADIF. He was shocked when he replied that he did not know and added that it was unclear who the judge wished to see! ADIF has been instructed to supply the name of someone responsible for safety in the company to appear at a further hearing.

Local police recover a stolen electrocardiogram

By Keith Nicol Policia Local in Orihuela recovered an electrocardiogram that was stolen from a unit of Urgent Care Service (SAMU) on Sunday, on Calle Alfonso XIII. According to police, on Sunday the SAMU driver reported the theft at the Local Police Headquarters, which has a value that ranges between 6,000 and 7,000 euros and was in a black case with all the cables required for operation.

Local agents made inquiries in the area in which the robbery had taken place, asking neighbours for any information. One claimed to have seen a man walking with down the street in nervous manner, close to the Segura river bank and carrying a briefcase that matched the description provided by members of the SAMU unit. A patrol that carried out surveillance in the area between the East and West bridges on Monday found a black suitcase inside which was the electrocardiograph, which was handed back to SAMU.

Jane Lentz at an Easter party

Scam couple traced

by Jack Troughton A COUPLE accused of running a wooden homes scam on the Costa Blanca has been traced to a holiday park in Holland.

Irish-born Jane Lentz and her Dutch husband Hans are managing Park Westerkogge, Berkhout, where they live above the restaurant.

In 2010, RTN reported how the couple allegedly defrauded a series of victims selling imported Finnish-made wooden homes across Spain before vanishing and leaving homeowners on the ‘Lentssons Resort’ at La Xara locked out.

The pair was later discovered running a Lapland holiday business within the Arctic Circle in Finland named ‘Lentssons Resort Suomunhelmi’.

Interviewed by a Finnish newspaper about the Father Christmas themed park, the pair maintained they had fallen in love with the area and had wanted to escape the “hustle and bustle” of Spain.

WOODEN However, it appeared the business had run into difficulties or been sold because the website advertising the wooden lodges, cafe and restaurant was later closed down.

It appeared the couple had disappeared again – until this week when RTN received an email from Holland and a crucial tip off.

It appears Jane and Hans were appointed as managers after boasting of their experience in running camping and resort sites in Spain and Finland and curious neighbours searched the Internet to find out more.

“We could never find anything on the Internet,” they said. “That is until 3rd August when they organised a barbeque at the camp site and gave everyone who paid a stamp. This stamp was from their Lentssons resort in Finland.

“Curious about this resort, we searched the Internet and saw the Finnish article with the name of Jane Lentsson – when we searched this name we found the RTN articles about all the problems in Spain.”

Firemen tackle blaze

VALENCIA’S EMERGENCY services were tested on Monday evening when fire broke out in an area on scrubland on the outskirts of Denia.

The blaze was situated on land on the Las Marinas coast road at the northern end of the town and the alarm was sound just before 6pm.

Specialist forest fire fighters were rushed to the scene, supported by the Valencia Generalitat’s helicopter – the chopper dropping water on the flames. Homes near the fire were not evacuated as the buildings were “in no danger” according to a spokesman for the emergency services. “The fire was quickly confined and controlled.”

Two forest fires also broke out in the Province of Castellon on Monday but were both extinguished before they could spread through the tinder dry countryside.

Tills start ringing SHOPPERS FORMED an orderly queue to boost takings at the new Jalon Valley HELP shop only minutes after it was officially opened for business on Tuesday evening.

by Jack Troughton Outside the premises in the square off Jalon’s Calle Virgen there was a party to mark the new venture – inside the till was ringing and 320€ was spent to boost the charity’s coffers.

Jalon Valley HELP’s President Elaine Horton and the town’s Mayor Juan Miguel (pictured) cut the ribbon to officially open the premises following a blessing by local priest Don Pablo.

Elaine, welcoming people to the ‘disabled friendly’ shop, said: “Things like this do not just happen and it has taken an awful lot of people to bring this about. “ She said the mayor had been a “strong supporter” of the charity and HELP was very grateful for his backing.

“He has allowed us to keep our old shop which has become a store for all our equipment, free of charge,” said Elaine.

“And a special thanks to everyone who has donated goods for the shop and for supporting all our events – otherwise we could not do what we do!”

Guests at the opening were treated to cava and tapas outdoors as trading got underway in the shop under the keen eye of manageress Maggie Mooney and her volunteer team.

A carnival atmosphere was helped along by the talented guitarist Paul Alcaide, who declared he would make a donation of CD sales on the evening to HELP. The shop and the Jalon Valley HELP shop in neighbouring Alcalali are open Monday to Saturday between 10am and 1pm.

“We don’t really know how he got home. I don’t know whether he drove or his friend drove but I suspect he drove himself.

“He went in and told Clare what had happened and said ‘I feel a bit rough’. She helped him up the stairs and went to get some pain killers. She returned and he was dead in the bed.”Sue added: “Clare said there was not a mark on his body and absolutely nothing to indicate there had been a fight.”

She said her son’s death had triggered a mass of speculation about what had happened at Space. “You will speak to a thousand people who will say Ray had not got an aggressive bone in his body.

“He was no shrinking violet and can be quite vocal but is very gentle. He would walk away rather than have a fight, unless perhaps someone was threatening his family.”

Ray met Clare in Benidorm and he had moved to the Costa Blanca seven years ago from Milton Keynes to head the nursing and care agency Sue had launched with her husband Miguel.

“Clare is a widow at 29-years-old, that is what brings it all home,” added Sue. “The whole family is absolutely devastated.” And Sue said Ray had been a MENSA candidate as a child and was “as bright as a button”. She added: “He was a lovely caring person and a fantastic dad, a caring husband and a proper family man, the family always came first.”

She said Clare requested that no one buy flowers for the funeral but if anyone had wanted to contribute money it would be used to purchase two Weeping Mulberry trees to plant in his memory for his young son and daughter.

Rottweiler attack LOCAL POLICE shot a Rottweiler in San Vicente on Monday after the animal viciously attacked a woman who lived in the same house. The incident occurred in a private villa. The dog’s owner had been in possession of a permit to own a dangerous dog breed since 2009 along with relevant insurances. The animal had received regular veterinary checks and had no previous history of aggression. On this occasion, however, it was still behaving aggressively when police arrived at the scene. They tried to restrain the dog but in the end resorted to firing a dozen bullets. The woman, who has not been named, was taken to hospital with serious leg wounds. In late June in Mutxamel, a 17-year-old was attacked by a Rottweiler, sustaining serious arm injuries.

Firework explosion injures two FOLLOWING THE government’s recent announcement that stricter controls are to be introduced for retail establishments stocking fireworks, two people have been seriously injured in an explosion at around 7.50am on Wednesday in a firework factory in Tarragona. The two victims, employees of the Pirogestion factory, were transferred to Pius Hospital de Valls in Tarragona but were later transferred by helicopter to the Burns Unit of Barcelona’s Hospital Vall d’Hebron.

The services of eight fire crews were required to put out the ensuing fire that followed the explosion, the cause of which is not yet known.

Cut your speed THE DIRECTORATE General of Traffic (DGT) has stepped up its speed control programme this week, launching a new awareness campaign featuring graphic public information films showing the victims of high speed crashes. The films and radio announcements are promoted with the mantra: ‘Speed destroys the lives of people you do not know but also people you know very well, like your family or your friends’.

Excessive speed remains the main cause of accidents on Spanish roads, claiming 500 around fatalities every year. Between January and September last year, speeding accounted for 54% of all traffic fines, beating penalties for cell phone use while driving (16.6%), nonuse of seat belts (16.2%) and drunk driving (13%).

Sober thoughts on holiday drinking

by Jack Troughton YOUNG HOLIDAYMAKERS are urged think before they drink to avoid the risk of serious harm in the Costa Blanca sunshine.

Expats are asked to pass on a warning to visiting family and friends in an attempt to help them enjoy their stay rather than spend time in hospital, jail, “or worse”.

A new Foreign and Commonwealth Office campaign has been launched under the banner: ‘On holiday, don’t let drink do your talking’.

Cheap booze and the getaway spirit of a holiday in the sun are said to entice people to drink more during a trip.

New research reveals that around half – some 51% - of 16 to 24-year-olds say they are likely to drink more on holiday than at home and two thirds (61%) claim this is because alcohol is cheaper. It also appears that peer pressure is also a major factor. Over 40% of those surveyed believe that pressure from friends led them go one – or two – drinks too far.

And British Consular staff have already been kept busy this summer coming to the aid of people who have got into trouble with a tipple too many.

Will Middleton, Consular Regional Director for Spain, said: “Going on holiday is a great opportunity to relax and have fun with family and friends, and enjoying a drink can be a part of that.

EXCESS “We are not telling people to stop drinking but we do want people to be aware of the consequences of drinking to excess – and our research shows that almost half of young people

understand them already.”

He said laws and customs varied in different countries – Spain has lower drink drive limits to the UK and ‘free pour’ rather than strict measures on spirits made it harder to control the amounts being consumed.

“It is important to find out about local laws, including on alcohol consumption, to avoid a night in a police cell or even a criminal record,” said Mr Middleton.

“Drinking can impair judgement. The effect of being hospitalised or arrested overseas goes far beyond a ruined holiday and can have a devastating impact on family and friends – financially and emotionally. Our message is have fun in the sun, but drink responsibly so you don’t put yourself at risk of harm.”

Research underlined how excessive drinking resulted in young Brits engaged in risky or disrespectful behaviour: almost a quarter (23%), go swimming while drunk abroad; more than one in 10 find themselves in a vulnerable situation with a stranger; and over a quarter (26%) did something they were later ashamed of.

The FCO issued four top tips to help prevent alcohol ruining a night out or a whole holiday: remember tolerance can change in the heat and Spanish bars may serve larger measures than the UK – so alternate drinks with water or soft drinks; protect your drink, keep an eye on a glass or bottle to prevent it being spiked; stay close to friends and look out for each other; and show respect towards other holidaymakers and locals.

Police divers hunt for torpedo POLICE DIVERS were mobilized last Thursday in the waters off Elche’s Arenales beach when swimmers reported a suspected unexploded torpedo at a depth of around two metres, half buried in the sand on the sea bed. The resulting search operation led to considerable excitement and woke up sunbathers soaking up the rays on the beach as divers discovered and photographed the metal cylinder for examination by the EOD (Bomb Disposal Unit). The ‘torpedo’ turned out to be an old sewage pipe belonging to the Hotel Arenales. Still - better safe than sorry!

Community pools HAVE YOU noticed that in adverts for flats that are for sale there is always a picture of a beautiful community pool? In the picture the pool is always empty and looks very nice.

But where I live the community pool is a constant source of problems! The problem actually isn’t the pool but with some of the people using the pool.

Recently my community fees helped pay for the installation of a tall metal fence surrounding the pool area. This had to be done to stop people who don’t live here from coming into the urbanization and using the pool. I even had to pay 40 for the electronic key for the pool gate! Then we had to pay for a large sign of rules posted on the pool gate, sadly most of which have been broken.

Then hooligans came and were in the pool very late at night causing considerable disturbance. Trying to stop people from disobeying rules invites some very hurtful insults…

Finally, one gets so tired of trying to get people to obey pool rules you just give up.

The noise in the pool is the worst, especially if you have to go to work in the morning after enduring the noise from the pool late at night. It amazes me that some parents do not teach their children manners, allowing them to shout and scream and show no respect for older people using the pool.

Soon the pool will close for the summer, and I will be paying community fees to maintain the pool while it sits idle for the next nine months, just like in the adverts of flats for sale.

Illegal or unethical?

RE: DEIDRE STEWART’S experience on the front page of RTN last week - unfortunately this has happened to us elsewhere.

We attended a fund raising event in Sanet a couple of weeks ago and wished we hadn’t.

On entry, we paid for a prize draw ticket which included our telephone number in case we won!

Two weeks later we received, along with many of our friends, an unsolicited phone call selling financial services.

If it is not illegal, it is surely unethical to solicit phone numbers in this way and pass them on to other organisations without consent. Using a charity fund raising event to create a free data base is not something I would willingly subscribe to and I would advise your readers not to provide their phone numbers in this way.

Rajoy sorry for being caught

I HAVE been reading the article ‘Rajoy Faces Congress’ in the RTN issue 720.

According to the story, Rajoy spent considerable time blaming his opponents for the bad reputation that Spain has and of course his opponents blame him for the bad reputation that Spain has.

Rajoy of course denies any wrong doing and says he didn’t know the Treasurer of his party, Luis Barcenas was secretly stashing €47 million in a Swiss bank account.

Rajoy is sorry, not for the fraud and corruption and how bad it makes Spain look, but that his party was caught.

Learn the basics

WITH REFERENCE to the letter from a reader moaning about having to pay for a translator and expecting the ayuntamiento staff to speak English, ask yourself would a town hall in any English town have Spanish speaking staff? Obviously not, so why does she expect Spain to be different?

The answer for her is simple: learn Spanish and integrate into Spain, rather than live a ‘ghettoised’ existence.

I find it arrogant that anyone would consider living in another country without learning at least the basics of the country’s language to enable them to do basic tasks like this.

Sounds like a rip off SINCE READING about the Energy Certificate law it has bothered and annoyed me and I am sure many other people feel the same.

And the government keeps making amendments, which makes it even more confusing.

I heard property owners are supposed to pay a qualified inspector to look at our property and tell us how much we need to pay to upgrade our homes. It is very troubling and worrying having to think we are being forced to spend a huge amount of money for someone to come to our property and inspect it, then issue us a piece of paper informing us we have to spend a huge amount of money to conserve energy.

The whole Energy Certificate law sounds like a massive rip off.

But if that is not bad enough, I imagine there will be crooks pretending to be qualified inspectors coming to peoples’ homes to rip off unsuspecting owners. It boggles my mind thinking about having to pay to be told I need to pay large amounts of money to conserve heat, especially when it has been over 30ºC every day this Summer!

Where does one find a certified inspector to do this?

by Jan Gamm Its twin towers dominate the Benidorm skyline, joined by a conical structure from floor 38 - 44 in an ‘M-shaped’ reference to the terrorist attacks of 11th March 2004 in Madrid, it is thought.

Gorgeous! Its only flaw is that it has no elevator beyond the 20th storey! Residents living the high life from the 21st floor upward will have to be super-duper fit!

NIGHTMARE Due to open in 2009, the construction has been a financial nightmare, with dozens of mishaps and accidents. Despite this 35% of the homes are already sold ahead of the revised completion deadline of December this year. More buyers would solve the dilemma but without a guarantee of comfortable transport to the top floors nobody wants to risk investment.

And the absence of an elevator is just one more problem in a series of costly disasters.

The original construction company went broke and the project has been plagued with claims from unpaid suppliers and allegations of fraud amid a takeover of the building’s finances by asset management bank Sareb.

Recently the architect team walked out with the elevator crisis still unsolved.

SPACE The building was originally to have 20 storeys only - the developers increased this to 47 far too late into the construction schedule and – whoops - a 47-storey elevator requires more space for motor equipment than a 20-storey version. That space simply does not exist.

The obvious solution is that the building will have to be service by external elevators but there is no available cash to finance them.

And until a solution is found, the InTempo remains a monument to recession-hit Spain.

This week in Gibraltar

THE EUROPEAN Union has informed Spain that a 50€ charge on travellers passing through the border checkpoint between Gibraltar and the Spanish mainland would be illegal, according to EU spokesman Olivier Bailly. Nonetheless the British government has refused to rule out ‘tit-for-tat’ measures in the event of a charge being levied.

In recent weeks Spain has introduced stringent border checks creating queues of tourists and commuters sweltering in the summer heat while Spanish Prime Minster Mariano Rajoy demands the removal of the concrete blocks placed in Algeciras Bay that he says are a deliberate obstruction to Spain’s fishing industry. Yet the Spanish Department

of Agriculture and Fisheries has installed no less than 25 similar artificial reefs along the Andalucian coastline.

PROTEST

Earlier in the week a flotilla of 40 Spanish vessels that included fishing boats and pleasure craft entered the waters close to Gibraltar in protest over the artificial reef, but were quickly surrounded by Gibraltar Police patrol boats.

They were corralled for a short time before being allowed to return to mainland Spain.

As HMS Westminster entered Gibraltar waters on Monday, welcomed by enthusiastic crowds of flag-waving Brits despite its 7.30am arrival, a Spanish Guardia Civil patrol boat approached the military area of the harbour. It passed along the harbour walls before speeding off when challenged by a police launch.

TEXTS And border queues continue to cause mayhem for both British and Spanish commuters, hoping for an early end to the sizzling summer temperatures. It has emerged this week that police at the checkpoint are sent texts from Madrid instructing them when to start checking every vehicle that passes across the border and when to stop – and these texts usually coincide with the busiest times of the working day.

In retaliation for the border chaos it has been reported that UK officials are examining the potential to disrupt Spain’s lucrative tourist industry in addition to blocking its policy initiatives at the EU. BRUSSELS British Prime Minister David Cameron is now pressing President of the EU Commission Jose Manuel Barroso to send monitors to the border “urgently” and bring the planned mid-September mission forward to August, believing that Spain’s threats and sanctions will not stand up to legal scrutiny.

Barroso has had lengthy discussions with Cameron and also with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and in both cases made it clear that Brussels expects “both parties to respect applicable EU law,” adding that he hoped the two countries would find an amicable agreement.

Meanwhile Spain’s Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo has said that Spain is unwilling to commence dialogue with Britain until the 70 concrete blocks dropped into Algeciras bay have been removed.

Public response to the Gibraltar stalemate is varied. One Guardian columnist said: “Places like Gibraltar are nothing more than ‘Churchillian theme parks of red pillar boxes, fish and chips and warm beer’.” For the most part, however, the British response to the border checks being imposed by Spain may best be described as angry, patriotic indignation.

Brave police rescue

A NATIONAL police officer braved a burning building on Monday afternoon to rescue a woman and her baby. The fire started in a block of flats in Calle Enric Valor, Paterna, Valencia, with a kitchen accident. Smoke and flames quickly filled the building and shortly afterward a woman was seen on one of the balconies of the building holding a baby and screaming for help.

Brave police officer Joachim used his cap as a face mask and ran through the thick smoke to the second floor to help the woman and her 20-monthold child to safety.

RECENTLY Spanish and International police dismantled a network stealing luxury cars throughout the EU, sold from their business centre in Catalunya.

by Keith Nicol In total police have located 42 vehicles with “manipulated frames and chassis numbers”, valued at more than 1.3 million euros through illegal mafia families in Maresme!

The Catalan police have broken up a group of criminals who stole luxury cars in several countries of the European Union and subsequently sold them from Catalunya after changing identity number manipulating the cars to look like something else, with fake paperwork and legitimate ITVs. In total, 42 vehicles, valued at over 1.3 million were stolen and all but two have been located. 26 of the cars were with their ‘new’ owners, buyers who acquired the cars without knowing their true origin while14 were recovered when they were waiting to go to

the ITV! News agency AFP reported that the cars were being sold for around 40,000€ on the Internet against 200,000€ on the showroom floor.

In total, 16 people were arrested between Catalonia, Germany, Torrevieja and Poland, and eleven were sent to prison. Once stolen from different countries around the European Union, the vehicles were brought to Catalunya to be reworked and then advertised on the internet. The group consisted of people of Ukrainian nationality, Spanish, French and Belgian with a high level of expertise in the development of such activities. Four people were arrested between Torrevieja and Poland. They are accused of belonging to a criminal organization, theft in dwelling house and two continuous crimes vehicle theft and forgery.

Prostitution hindering the housing market

By Keith Nicol COMPLAINTS HAVE been launched with the Torrevieja Town hall by the Promoters and Builders Association who have branded the image of prostitutes on the city’s streets and roundabouts as “deplorable: and have called for a new ordinance to fine customers!

The prostitutes offer their services at the entrances to Torrevieja and nearby towns, not painting a very attractive picture to those visiting the area for possibly the first time and seeing dozens of girls working the streets.

The Association of Promoters and Builders in Torrevieja and the Vega Baja (Procosta) lamented the “deplorable image” featuring the presence of prostitutes on the streets an the group of entrepreneurs Turismo Residencial de la Costa Blanca has asked the City Council to put in place appropriate measures to “eradicate prostitution from the streets”, since according to them, “both the local authority and provincial businesses and entrepreneurs “are” striving every day to improve the image of the Costa Blanca and, above all, of our city, Torrevieja”. The association, headed by Antonio Navarro, explained that the City Council have already made some forward steps towards this “by the deployment of Policia Local agents and the intervention unit, ‘Udipo’, who have made appropriate identifications of the girls who offer prostitution in public areas” Procosta is proposing following cities like Barcelona where a client can face fines of between 1,000 and 1,200 euros, increasing the amount of 300 euros if the events occur within 200 feet of a school.

PUNTA PRIMA was the scene for an unusual occurrence this week as a sailboat somehow managed to get grounded on the headland The incident occurred about 2.00pm, when local police received a 112 notice warning that a sailboat had run aground on the beach head. Policia Local and rescue services were dispatched to see the sailboat in Punta Prima and the special salvage department took quick action to warn other shipping and water users of the situation.

Professional rescue service personnel arrived with jet skis and special equipment to re-float the boat which was then taken to the port of Cabo Roig, so that the damage could be accessed. There was no word of how or why the sailboat ended up grounded on the rocks.

And opening the show at the Andaluz Hotel, Moraira, is Tony Rivers, kick starting the night with his own blend of music.

faces from the music world.

Rastro bankrolls Red Cross

By Jack Troughton ORGANISERS OF a second annual charity ‘rastro’ in Javea Port on Sunday 1st September hope public support will again help raise money for the Red Cross.

The first market 12 months ago – launched by Lynne Montague in memory of her husband Peter – raised over 1,800€ for the charity.

This year the event, which starts at 2pm, is being held in Avenida Rey Jaime I, in the heart of the port – a stage has been organised for live music and there will be a Spanish guitarist.

Lynne said: “The rastro is much bigger this year and we hope to easily beat last year’s total to raise some much-needed funds for the local Red Cross.

“We are also organising an online auction of a Spanish Davis Cup shirt autographed by David Ferrer, the Javea born tennis star.”

There will be 40 stalls at the market including tombola, a cake stall, and people selling both new and second hand goods.

Sprucing up the schools THE DEPARTMENT of Education of L’Alfas del Pi is taking advantage of the school holidays to spruce up three schools in the area prior to the new term starting 9th September. At one college on Tuesday municipal workers braved the hot weather to re-paint the sports and recreation area and also re-channelled a drain to prevent unpleasant odours. The enclosed centre courtyard at Raco de L’Albir has been transformed into a play area complete with a rubber floor, swings and a slide. Gardeners weeded and pruned the grounds at all three colleges.

The power of advertising means songs and music become very familiar to people and the concert is full of wellknown pieces from television.

The singing group will present classical pieces such as the Anvil Chorus through to jazz and swing numbers made famous by the likes of Bobby Darin and Michael Buble – together with a sprinkling of surprises.

Paws off our beach!

DOG OWNERS were pleased when the beach at Punta del Rui, El Campello, was opened recently to canines. However, their delight was short-lived as a group of other beach users have made them decidedly unwelcome, holding the view that sharing the beach between humans and dogs is a bad idea due to hygiene issues. Last Thursday the two factions almost came to blows and the police had to step in to avoid a punch-up. The trouble began when one group asked another group to leave the ‘no-man’s-land’ between the restricted area and that designated for canines. The second group refused as they did not have their dogs with them and the first group allegedly responded by hurling insults and throwing sand and pebbles. The doggy supporters insist that the beach “belongs to everyone” and that diehards simply want to keep the beach for their exclusive use. The police prevented the altercation leading to fisticuffs but until hostilities calm down the future of the popular doggy beach looks uncertain.

Spain’s first crossdressing contest

SPAIN’S FIRST formal cross-dressing contest was held in the Canibal Pub in Alicante last weekend with 12 candidates vying for the ‘Miss Transformarte’ title.

The evening was full of banter, colour and raucous entertainment featuring Lola Flores, Monica Naranjo, Rihanna, Lady Star and a Brazilian samba dancer. The winner was Violette Carson of Elche who played the character of Lady Gaga. She was crowned and presented with a trophy in the form of a ‘T’ set with Swarovski crystals. The first runner up was Lady Star and the second Susana Travel.

One Direction storms Madrid HUNDREDS OF fans turned up for the Madrid premiere of ‘This Is Us’, teen sensation One Direction’s debut movie.

Fans waited up to ten hours in the steaming August heat to secure tickets in the Plaza de Callao. Messages from the band were streamed over television screens which included the chant from Niall Horan, “I am Spanish, Spanish, Spanish,” which could not be heard above the screams of feverish throngs of teenagers.

It flies through the air and under the sea…

MY FOLKS have decided that’s it’s probably time that they moved into a flat. My dad is poorly and an ‘assisted living’ apartment seems to be the sensible way ahead.

SO, THE last few weeks have been a tortuous process of sorting through things needed and those not needed.

To decant a three-bedroom house into a single bedroom flat requires a discipline that’s blunt and low on sentiment: lots of stuff has to go. Obviously, over the lifetime of a marriage everyone accumulates a stockpile of objects that are often consigned to the garage or loft because “you’ll never know when we might need that...”

However, I must say I’m proud of how Mum and Dad have approached the task and we are almost at the point of being able to move now. The precious things are photographs and other bits of memorabilia that make up a family’s history. I was quite pleased to be reunited with my old school cap - although, I wasn’t too pleased to see some of those school reports again!

Anyway, all of which brings us to the piece of ‘art’ that you see before you.

At the bottom of one of mum’s boxes was this picture from 1960. It features

a young Watts’s interpretation of the fabulous craft from Gerry Anderson’s first foray into puppet sci-fi, namely, Supercar. While purists might argue that the colour scheme is wrong, I’d say by crayoning the machine green (rather than its true red) it’s an early attempt to show environmental awareness. And by drawing the craft ‘flat’, rather than showing perspective, it’s an early attempt by the young Watts at one-dimensional abstractism - maybe even analytical cubism.

Not having lost his highly tuned sense of sarcasm my Dad said, “Why don’t you give them all a treat and feature it in RTN?” Well, you know what dad, why not? So, here it is. It’s not every day that your art is given a 125,000 limited edition print run, is it? Cut it out and keep it folks, or do as neighbour David will do and turn it into a paper fuel brick for those cold winter evenings.

New old canon for floating museum ONE OF the highlights of a visit to Torrevieja is a visit to the floating museum site, which offers a tour of Spain’s only decommissioned submarine that is open to the public, the Delfin S61, the Albatros III Customs Boat and a variety of other mainly nautical items, such as torpedoes and small craft.

The newest addition to the display arrived on Wednesday, which has been loaned to the exhibition until at least 2015.

The item is an impressive Howitzer Field Gun, with a 105/26 mm gauge, a Spanish Army Model from1958 Naval-Reinosa whose characteristics are: weight 2,000 kg; and could fire a 15 kg weight to a projectile range of 11,450 meters. The display has been loaned to the Museum of Sea and Salt’s Floating Museum, by the Benejúzar Mora Scrap Yard: Desguaces Mora Benejuzar from Benejuzar.

All management of the movement and safety of the Field Gun was carried out by the Historical Cultural Association ‘Carro Verdeja’, whose president is Mr. Rafael García Rodríguez, who is also the secretary of the Association of Military Modelling in Torrevieja.

This piece will be in the exhibition area of the Floating Museum next to the submarine mine, depth charge launcher, 20 mm Oerlikon gun, Torpedo L-5 and Breda Bofors 40Mm Cannon.

Artist goes wild in Spain WILDLIFE ARTIST Stephen Binns is captivated by everything with a Spanish flavour but his passion is the country’s famous fighting bull.

by Jack Troughton He travels the Costa Blanca to record a view of its wildlife, scenery, flamenco dancers and the traditional fallas – but ‘El Toro’ dominates his canvasses and ceramics.

“My main subjects are bulls, which I find fascinating,” Stephen told RTN. “They get a much better life than domestic cattle until they are four to six, they are very well looked after – then they go into the ring.

“The bullfight, love it or hate it, is a part of Spanish life and an interesting subject for the artist. These bulls are born and bred for the ring and each farm has its own ‘brand’. There is a great rivalry to breed the bravest and most courageous bulls.”

And while some of Stephen’s work features the controversial scenes of the bullfight, much is also made of the fighting bull set against the Spanish landscape.

Stephen lives in Calpe with his wife Angela and their daughter Eden Rose. He grew up in Yorkshire and painted from an early age – his grandfather Dan, responsible for artwork on the cover of magazine The Dalesman, and father David are also well known professional artists.

“Painting is something I have always done since I was a child and when my parents moved to Northumberland by accident I met a potter who asked me to go and work with him. I did – and learnt the skills of the art of ceramics.”

INSPIRE He set up a ceramics workshop in the UK and has brought his kiln and materials to Spain.

Naturally he now creates bulls’ heads, inspired by the “magnificent” Spanish animal.

And during his career he has undertaken a string of interesting commissions, including a plant pot in the shape of Alan Titchmarsh’s head and a model of a Border Leicester Sheep in silver plate – presented to Princess Anne.

Here in Spain popular commissions are for pet portraits. “I have done hundreds and hundreds of a range of animals.”

Stephen has also had work accepted by the Society of Wildlife Artists – his father was a founder member of the society – and has been highly commended by the British Watercolour Society.

His first major exhibition was in Berwick upon Tweed, but Stephen’s painting and ceramics have also been on show in Oliva and last year in Calpe.

Stephen can be found on Facebook under Stephen D Binns and he is a regular visitor to ‘rastro’ markets in the area, including Teulada on a Sunday morning.

Beer running

By Jack Troughton DRINKERS ARE expected to quaff 10,000 bottles of beer a day during the five days of ‘bous al a mar’ in Javea Port – part of the traditional festival of patron saint the Virgen de Loreto. Sales of beer during the bull running – the idea is to commit the beast to a charge that takes it into the sea – and of soft drinks, tapas, and paella help fund the annual celebrations. The event starts on Friday 30th August. However, people who are drunk or under the age of 16 are barred from entering the arena build in a semi circle on the quay. The fiesta starts tomorrow (Saturday) and runs until Sunday 8th September and a varied programme takes place in the port area.

How to register the new Energy Efficiency Certificate DISINFORMATION AND apathy would be a fair description of the state of the new Energy Efficiency Certificate saga in Spain at the moment…‘un poco loco!’

Government fast tracking, contradictions and confusing points in the legislation, software issues, along with the scams and cheap certificates have all contributed to the mayhem.

Some real estate agents are refusing to do anything “until the situation calms down,” and one could justify being sympathetic to that claim.

Many people do not understand whether or not they need the certificate, whilst others consider the certificate as another tax, and just another way of squeezing money.

Consequently a slow-down has occurred which is forecast to have a negative effect on the national property sales figures.

However, those wanting to abide by the law and not wishing to put themselves in a position whereby the sale of their property may

default, should persevere and obtain an Energy Efficiency Certificate from a trustworthy source.

The energy certification process of a building is not fully complete until the EEC is registered.

No building or part of a building, according to the new property law, may be sold or rented without having previously registered the EEC in the Register of Certified Energy Performance of Buildings. It is the obligation of the owner or developer of the building to register the certificate.

Once the certificate has been issued it is necessary to register it with the appropriate agency of the Autonomous Community.

Procedure varies from region to region, and some regions may require a fee of about 30€. The registration may be delegated to a third party and is usually carried out by the assessor. Beware of assessors that do not offer the registration service because they may not be authorised.

After initial delays, Valencia is now accepting EECs for registration at the government authorised agency, AVEN. The registration can be applied for on-line or in person and currently is free.

When the registration is approved, an energy label is issued and should be attached to the certificate. The energy label summarises the information contained in the certificate and is for the purpose of display. It should then be made available to real estate agents, prospective buyers or tenants and displayed with all marketing of the property.

It is vital that the EEC has been issued by an authorised architect or engineer otherwise penalties will apply resulting in fines. So, beware of scams offering cheap certificates.

GARDENING REMAINS a major retirement activity in Spain although our surveys suggest more women than men actively garden on a regular basis. This is a pity as gardening offers interesting mental and physical activity in touch with and managing nature.

In spite of the amazing achievements of technology over the past century a garden designed developed and nurtured over ten or twenty years is probably one of the most complex, challenging and continuous projects one can undertake in retirement and even over a lifetime. But many do it because the results are very visible satisfying and self-fulfilling and in partnership with a spouse can rebuild relationships that might have declined during busy working lives. Also gardening can be practiced even into one’s nineties for active gardens can be reduced in size and enviable mini gardens can be created even on apartment terraces and balconies as described in ‘Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style’.

Some of the other reasons retirement gardening is popular are as follows.

It can be practiced in gardens and allotments, in patios and courtyards, and on apartment terraces balconies and window sills. Yes even on window sills where we have seen interesting

pleasurable and healthy succulent collections, mini strawberry beds and trays of cut-and-cut-again salad leaf collections. On an even smaller scale one can try drain pipe gardening.

Having a garden to potter around in can help the transition from paid work to retirement as it has different and interesting demands season by season.

Gardens provided opportunities for brain and brawn. It provides for both partners to combine their relative strengths and weaknesses.

Men folk - if you are not keen on gardening at least help your spouse/partner to change plantings to the more drought and frost resistant varieties including wild naturalised varieties proposed by the branches of the Mediterranean Gardening Society and establish systems for collecting storing and distributing more rain water.

Several hundred practical ideas for reducing your watering bills and efforts are included in ‘Making Waterless Gardens a Practical Reality Worldwide’. It has already been purchased as far away as Japan. Hard copy and Kindle versions are available.

Moving to the south of Europe allows one to enjoy gardening and gardens on many more days of the year than in the UK and other northerly countries and also allows one to experiment with a new range of flowering plants, fruits, herbs and vegetables.

With just a few hours a week it is perfectly possible to become very self sufficient in

ecologically grown herbs vegetables and fruit again even on a mini scale.

As one becomes infirm it is possible to work sitting down by gardening in tall containers and on specially constructed growing tables. The latter are great for building up interesting collections of small plants and small growing salad varieties.

If one surrounds a growing table with eight to ten builders buckets in the form of a ten-tub veggie plot as launched in our book ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ an amazing diversity of vegetables can be grown. Shade from a large umbrella can enable many crops to be grown even during the hottest months.

Working in the garden, especially in the winter sun, helps build up and maintain ones natural vitamin D production as well as exercising many limbs. But do use trees to add shade for yourself and pets with shade seats at various points of the garden to rest, read and enjoy the vistas and perfumes of the garden. We have six seats strategically placed for use at various times of the day and seasons of the year.

Egg-laying hens can be very friendly and interesting pets if purchased young and regularly handled and their bedding is a good addition to compost heaps.

For those who still like competing, competitions for the best flower arrangement, group of roses, fruit or vegetables, most interesting newly propagated dry garden plants, best plant photograph etc at monthly garden clubs can

be very motivating. It is a pity that not all gardening clubs recognise the interest and self fulfilment that such activities can stimulate. I enjoyed doing the judging at a recent meeting of a gardening club and gave a talk.

If you are to continue gardening to a ripe age do ensure that the garden is safe. Do reduce the chance of slips, trips, sprains, cuts and spiking. Economically designed tools such as the Fiskars range are in my experience well worth the extra cost.

Also ensure that terrace and garden walls are safe, that trees are not getting top heavy and liable to falls or the snapping of branches in high winds, that low branches cannot cause head injuries, that garden electric circuits are safe etc…

Sorry to repeat ourselves, but it is necessary to remind our readers that to make a spanish will and have it updated is a “must” YES, MOST of our readers already have one, but some still don’t. If you do not have one, or yours is not in line with the Regulation of the European Union 650/2012 of last year, you certainly need to have a Spanish Will drafted or have yours reviewed as soon as possible; especially if you owner of any asset or property in Spain, as: 1.) Is a cost effective means of simplifying the handling of your affairs. Do not rely upon your English Will or, even worse, English intestacy rules (where there is no Will at all) to deal with any Spanish estate. Without a Spanish Will, no action can be taken in Spain until the Probate of your English estate has been finalised. This can take a very long time - irrespective of whether your English Will or affairs are complicated or straightforward. There is also the expense of official translations of the English Will, its legalisation, etc, which together will cost significantly

more than preparing a Spanish Will in the first place.

2.) On your Will you can expressively appoint your national Law to apply to your succession and Will.

Without a Will choosing the law of your country of origin, it would be understood if you live and have your assets in Spain, that Spanish inheritance Law applies to your succession, so at least 2/3 of the estate must go to your children, as per the European Regulation 650/2012.

3.) You have generally 6 months to pay IHT in Spanish Law following the date of death, failing to do so will result in a surcharge and interest will start to accrue. It is rare for the English probate to be dealt with in time to allow this deadline to be met.

4.) For tax purposes a Spanish Will can be drawn in such a way that it will minimize the Inheritance Tax

(IHT), needless to say you have to know how the Spanish IHT works to make your Will really tax efficient.

5.) Sometimes (due to the amount of the estate etc) when an English person passes away there is NO need to get a Probate as long as he has a valid Spanish Will BUT if this person does not have a Spanish Will then normally the Spanish authorities will need to see the Probate before dealing with the Spanish estate.

If you have assets in Spain and have not yet drawn your Spanish Will we advise you to do it as soon as possible. Also, if you have an old previous Will and you have not opted expressly for your national law you need to review it. We can assist you to do it, here in Spain, but if is not possible for you to travel to Spain, we can prepared the Spanish Will to be signed in your country, and then we will register it here.

A little clemency for debtors by

THERE HAS been a growing unrest concerning the mistakes of past decades: banks and financial institutions are seen as having a hefty responsibility for the pains of the present. However, it is not generally felt that they are the ones now picking up the tab.

INSTEAD IT seems the pockets of the ‘little people’ are being emptied with increases in taxes, loss of jobs and in some cases, loss of homes too.

There has been much publicity in the Spanish press about those struggling to pay the mortgage and the banks’ apparent disregard for their plight.

At last, protest, public petitions and parliamentary pressure seem to have made some impression.

MORATORIUM ON REPOSSESSIONS A new mortgage law means that there will be a two-year moratorium on repossession proceedings. Not every case will be guaranteed this respite, however.

There will be a filtering of cases so that only those who are particularly at risk due to their social and economic circumstances will be covered. Large families and those with young children will be given special consideration along with those on low incomes or where the debtor is unemployed and no longer entitled to unemployment benefit.

OPPORTUNITY FOR A FRESH START According to the mortgage conditions on Spanish homes, if you are unable to

pay the mortgage it’s not just a case of handing over the keys. You can be held responsible for any outstanding debt even when the house has been returned to the bank. According to the new law, some families and individuals will at least be able to handover the keys and walk away without taking the debt with them.

MORE TIME There are other concessions. More time is being allowed for debtors to put matters right. Whereas previously proceedings could begin as early as one month after non-payment, this has been extended to three. In practice, few banks did act so hastily, at least now they aren’t officially allowed to do so.

LIMIT ON INTEREST RATES Interest rates on defaults have hit debtors hard. The new law limits the percentage that can be charged to three times the Central Bank’s reference (currently at 4%).

The concessions in the new mortgage law are not going to solve the problem for the people who can’t pay their mortgages but they will go some way towards alleviating some of the extreme hardship which some people have had to endure.

We wouldn’t buy an annuity for ourselves say financial advisers!

JUST ONE financial adviser in 10 would buy a conventional annuity while rates are at their current lows, a survey has found.

IT WAS reported in the Daily Telegraph during the week that around 16% of advisers said they would delay making a decision in the current conditions, while 21% said they would use a mix of other ways of taking an income from their pension savings, such as ‘income drawdown’, fixed-term annuities and investments that include capital guarantees.

Only 10% said they would invest entirely in a conventional or enhanced ‘lifetime’ annuity - one that pays a set income every year for life.

The survey, which was conducted by MetLife, the insurer, also found that 42% of advisers’ clients were asking about alternatives to annuities. One in 10 advisers said more than 80% of their clients were asking about other means of taking a retirement income.

Income drawdown, which allows pensioners to retain ownership and control of their savings and draw an income from them instead of handing the money over to an insurer in exchange for an annuity, was financial advisers’ most popular choice for their own retirement.

Fixed-term annuities pay a set income for a number of years, often five or 10, after which the investor is given a sum of money back if he or she is still alive. This sum can be used to buy another annuity. The hope is that rates will have improved in the meantime.

Hopes that annuity rates would continue recent modest rises received a setback earlier this month when the Bank of England indicated that interest rates would remain low. Annuity rates tend to reflect investment returns more broadly, especially those on government bonds or gilts.

Mystery Man on the Street FOLLOWING A trip to the heart of Benidorm last week in the second of our Mystery Man on the Street series he takes the bus to the biggest hotel in town - the iconic hotel that is the 4* Gran Bali.

THE HOTEL This is a vast hotel with 776 rooms catering for up to 1550 guests, a busy place in high season! Upon arrival the lobby and reception is not unlike an airport! The hotel first opened in 1988 with the 52nd floor addition opening in 2002. There are four café bars; a poolside bar; a disco club and two large buffet restaurants; several pools and a viewing deck on floor 43 plus shops, a great spa, gym and a cyber café.

THE ROOMS Rooms are a good size, most with a balcony: high floors of course offer fantastic views. Some guests do mention that they feel the rooms are getting a bit ‘tired’ but they offer decent facilities for the price paid, whilst others I spoke to said they are fantastic! With a hotel of this size I would expect a mixed bag of comments.

They offer standard and superior rooms plus suites too. Standard rooms offer all you expect from a massive ‘tourist’ hotel. There is a pay-for ‘pillow menu’ if you like a posh pillow to hire or buy.

THE FOOD Dine in a choice of two buffet restaurants. These are busy if you eat at popular times but if you eat early the choice is good, the wait is shorter and the experience more relaxing! Reading many reviews it is again a mixed bag: some love it and some don’t. Seems

to depend on how busy the hotel is! I spoke to a young family from Manchester and they thought the food was superb for a family, just very busy, but eating before 8.30pm was quieter.

THE POOL There are several pools: a Kids’ pool, a Jacuzzi pool and some ‘splash’ features surrounded by plenty of sunbeds and large seating areas (for evening shows).

The usual saving of sunbeds is evident or course. However, I found plenty of spare beds in August at noon. Although packed there were still some quiet and shaded areas if like me you prefer your sun time quiet and child free! For drinks

there is a poolside bar and the main air-conditioned bar can be accessed poolside too.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW This is a busy hotel where you should expect some waiting for lifts, meals and drinks at peak season. Room rates are excellent out of season and the location is great if you prefer to be out of central Benidorm. There is an excellent beach (Cala Finestrat) five minutes away, plenty of places to eat nearby and buses run until late every 10 minutes into Benidorm. It is worth the extra to stay on a high floor.

Dining out with...

The Duchess

THIS WEEK I’ve gone paella mad and when in Spain you must try a paella.

THE BEST I have found in town is set in the famous La Cala de Finestrat Bay at the restaurant El Arenal, overlooking the sea in Avenida Marina Baixa No 5, Tel 96 585 6700, open Monday to Sunday from 1pm until 4pm and again from 8pm until 11pm.

Personally I am not a paella fan but the Duke is, and it’s nice to compromise sometimes (keeps us girls out of trouble).

This restaurant serves a variety of Mediterranean food but is more well-known to locals and holiday makers for its paella and fish. There are several different types of paella.

The most popular is the seafood one, but as I am not a great seafood lover we had the option to order a mix of chicken and vegetables.

These dishes are made to order so expect to wait 25 minutes or so. The paella comes in a gigantic pan, presented to you by the waiter and then taken to a nearby waiters’ table to be served onto plates. But they do give you the option to put it on the table so you can serve yourself.

Little tip: the best is at the bottom of the pan (called ‘socarrat’) Try and see why!

While we waited we had a starter. The Duke had steamed mussels with lemon and I had my usual house salad, which was very typical: lettuce, tomato, sweet corn, a small amount of tuna topped with asparagus, can’t go wrong there… Typically at this style of restaurant we were presented with a basket of fresh bread and alioli… nice. We also shared a plate of ‘chopitos’ - baby squid, crisply deep fried: they were delicious.

This restaurant is mainly busy at lunch times as they serve a daily ‘menú del día’ from a round 12€ for four courses

including wine or water - exceptionally good value. So if you want to be assured of a table, ring in advance or if you find yourself in La Cala Bay they can usually fit you in with a little wait. Restaurant ‘El Arenal’ doesn’t come with lots of fancy frills although the setting is nice, more so for me during the evening. Expect paper table cloths and plastic chairs (PS - take a cushion if you remember).

The service here is polite, ideal for groups who want to just chat the night away or couples who just want to watch the world go by. Summer evenings it can be inundated with small children - in my opinion they should be in bed but that’s the Duchess for you…!

The average spend per head is around 20€ including my usual bottle of house wine. A nice touch at the end is that when you ask for the bill you are offered a liquor ‘on the house’.

My next review will be ‘dining alone and how to enjoy a dining experience taking a book with you’.

Now and then: Benidorm 60 years on BENIDORM HAS changed beyond recognition since the 1950s and the Town Hall has put on a photographic exhibition in the Old Town of some wonderful black and white pictures to reflect this.

By Irena Bodnarec THE EXHIBITION can be viewed at L’Hort de Colon Museum - a recently restored mid-19th Century house which has been turned into an ethnological museum.

The easiest way to find it is go to Calle Santo Domingo, better known to most as ‘Tapas Alley’ and at the walking street end (opposite end to Royal Queen’s) walk across the walking street, pass the indoor mercado (which has Mercadona) and it is just a little further up on your right.

The prints are all framed and either black and white or sepia - they look stunning and make you gasp in wonder at how the resort use to look only 50 years ago. They were all taken by local photographer Fransisco Perez Bayonne, better known as ‘Quinco’ between 1957 to 1965 and some of the original cameras which he used to take the pictures with are also on display - it was like a history lesson for me!

The exhibition is on until 16th September and open during the week, Monday to Friday from 10am until 2pm closed at the weekend. It will certainly open your eyes as to how things have changed, which in reality is over a very short space of time. The exhibition is free to view...

Inheritance Tax increases in the Valencian region AS OF 6th August, the Valencian Government increased Inheritance Tax (IHT) payable by residents inheriting within this Region. Until this point residents of the Valencia Community benefited from a 99% exemption on assets they inherited within their Region. Now resident spouses, descendants and ascendants will have their personal free allowances upon inheritance, or in the case of gifting, increased to 100,000€. However, the exemption for assets inherited above the €100,000 allowance is being lowered to only 75%. There are no such exemptions for brothers / sisters / aunts / uncles / nephews /partners or friends.

Resident’s Inheritance Tax in Spain is charged by the autonomous region, however all non-residents who inherit assets on mainland Spain, The Balearic Islands and The Canaries are all taxed by the central Tax office in Madrid with a maximum allowance of 15,957€ per individual inheriting.

Many Valencia tax residents may now look forward to sizeable tax increases which may also be the case in other regions who decide to follow the tax increases in the near future. A concern for most beneficiaries is that bank accounts can be frozen on death which

could mean the money to pay this tax might not be available within the six months stipulated and in worst case scenario an embargo being placed upon the property. MABS swinging summer of fun MORE THAN a hundred people were entertained by Woody and Christine as they put on a memorable event to raise funds for MABS Mazarron at the Mazarron Country Club.

by Keith Nicol Only the August heat matched the electric atmosphere, but it was not enough to deter the audience enjoying a good old ´knees up´. Woody performed a brilliant selection of songs that had everyone in the room tapping their feet and singing along and Christine made sure the mood continued late into the night.

The evening raised a fantastic 611€ and MABS Mazarron would like to sincerely thanks everyone who attended.

MABS Mazarron are currently supporting over 90 patients in the Mazarron area and desperately need more volunteers, so if you can drive, escort a patient to and from a hospital appointment or can help their Fundraising team, please contact them on 620 582 418.

EL CLUB Náutico Marina Internacional is proud to be a collaborator with ‘Préstame tus Ojos – Lend Me Your Eyes’, a charity association set up to supply a reading service and a bit of companionship to those who are unable to read for themselves. In a simple ceremony held at the Sala de Banderas del Club Náutico Marina Internacional de Torrevieja, the Hall of Flags of Club Náutico Torrevieja International Marina, club manager, Trinidad Pujante, presented The Director of ‘Préstame tus Ojos - Lend me your Eyes”, Fernando Guardiola, with a cheque for their fundraising event that took place on Thursday 15th August during their ‘Beer and Karaoke Day’! Two hundred Euros was presented to Fernando who said, “this will be used to finance part of the costs of transporting volunteers to the various places where the service is offered, in the library, peoples homes, hospitals and old peoples residences in Torrevieja” The ‘Lend me your eyes’ Reading Club has regular sessions at Torrevieja’s Municipal Public Library called ‘Ambigú’, which is possible through their 70 volunteers, 24 of them international residents. The volunteers become the ‘eyes’ and the vision to those who cannot or have difficulty, reading in five nursing homes in Torrevieja and the surrounding area, as well as in several private homes in the locality. This event was supported by the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Torrevieja, Cárnicas Ríos and Distribuidora Económica de Torrevieja, S.L. all collaboratoers with ‘Lend me your Eyes’.

The last raffle at The Jazz Singer show at Los Rosales raised a whopping 460€.The charity has gone from strength to strength and has recently achieved the opening of two of the intended ten rehabilitation centres that have been planned since its onset. People have done anything and everything to raise funds for this worthy cause.

Ten brave volunteer fundraisers will be attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in order to raise £40,000 for the charity.

Amongst the volunteers will be model Nikki Lee and UK reality star of The Bachelor, Brandy Bower. The team leaves for their heroic undertaking on August 31st and will be returning on September 8th. The money raised will go towards building a dedicated facility that will help people dealing with posttraumatic stress. Cabanes Costa de Azahar I ENDED up in Cabanes recently when I was out looking at towns up the coast on the Costa de Azahar. The first thing I spotted as I walked into the centre of town was the Pub Beguim on Carrer Calvari, which styled itself as a champañeria and corkleria. The first is easy enough to work out but I really couldn’t fathom out the second, other than it’s something to do with pulling corks out, therefore an arty-tarty name for a wine bar. As it was also closed I couldn’t go in and ask.

They must be a very event village because not only is there the Fuente del Buen Suceso but also the Plaça Verte del Bon Succés (using both the Castillano and Valenciano versions of the spelling), although the fuente is actually in the Plaça des Hostals and topped with four nubile mermaids whose out-thrust bosoms mark the four points of the compass. (The translation of suceso is event but I couldn’t find out what the event was so as least I hope it was successful.)

The Plaza Iglesia, is home to the two pillars of Spanish life, the Church and the State, represented by the town hall, (although some will tell you that the genuine two pillars are the siesta and the fiesta). Fixed to the side of the 14th-century town hall is a sign warning the young chaps of the village that playing the game of pilota against the wall is strictly forbidden. At least they haven’t gone to the lengths of some places where they plaster the wall in a corrugated design to thwart the young lads bit of fun. One the top of the church

there’s still a large illuminated star – either they can’t be bothered to remove it each Christmas or they are still waiting for the imminent arrival of Balthazar and his two pals.

A tiny alleyway up the side of the church intriguingly draws you forward – only to end in a car park so you have to turn around and come back.

On Carrer de Sant Mateu there’s a mixture of architectural styles, but you can’t help but be intrigued by the delightful little balcony at number 16, where you can imagine Juliet leaning over to throw a rose to Romeo. Otherwise, it’s just a bland skinny building four storey’s high, although it does show signs of a fair age. A couple of doors up is something that would look more at home in the Austrian Tyrol, with its massive stone blocks and abundance of wood. Here it just looks daft.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Step by Step Spanish -45 Volver and Volverse YOU PROBABLY know that “volver” means “to return”. Of course in English we often say “to come back” or “to go back” to mean the same thing. Perhaps you already use simple phrases in Spanish like: “Vuelvo más tarde” (I’ll come back later) or can tackle a sentence like: “Mis vecinos han vuelto a Inglaterra” (My neighbours have gone back to England). These sentences illustrate the most common use of this verb “volver”, but you may well have seen and heard it, along with its reflexive form “volverse”, used in other ways which aren’t so easy to make sense of.

mess about with verbs, but you need to be able to understand the other versions when you come across them as well.

Firstly, “volver a”, along with a second verb in the infinitive, means “to do something again”. “Vuelvo a decir” means (“I say again” or “I repeat”).

“Volvemos a intentar” (“We try again” or “Let’s try again”). This construction is an alternative to the phrases which also mean “again”, i.e. “otra vez” and “de nuevo”.

“Intentamos de nuevo”, “intentamos otra vez” and “volvemos a intentar” mean exactly the same thing as each other.

Of course you can stick to using the form that comes more easily, which is usually the one you learnt first and which doesn’t

An interesting variation of this idea is expressed with the reflexive form “volverse”. Perhaps the easiest and most direct way to translate this is “to become”, although in English we often express say “to get” and “to go”. For example, returning to the idea of going mad for a minute, if we don’t mention the thing or person that drives us mad, but we just want to say that someone is going mad (possibly of their own accord) we use “volverse loco”. We could be discussing the biography of Van Gogh, but we are rather more likely to use this expression

“Volver” is also used it the expression “volver loco” which means “to drive crazy”.

The Fine Young Cannibals have suddenly come to mind. “She drives me crazy” in Spanish would be “me vuelve loco” or to be more explicit “Ella me vuelve loco”.

My cat is driving me mad - “Mi gata me está volviendo loca” or “Mi gata está volviéndome loca”. (Sorry Kitty, I don’t mean it).

colloquially about ourselves: “me estoy volviendo loco/loca” we might say when we’ve lost our keys for the third time in half an hour, or forgotten why we’ve walked into a room.

“Volverse” can be used for other “becomings”, as well as mad or crazy, although this verb does often imply some sort of unexpected or sudden change of emotion or character, often with a negative implication. We can say “volverse agresivo” (to become aggressive) or “volverse más simpático” (to become more friendly); “volverse deprimido” (to become depressed) or “volverse más alegre” (to become more cheerful).

Finally, going back to the original idea of “to return”, this should not be confused with the case of returning “something”, for example, a book to the library. This would be “devolver” - (to return, in other words - to take back; to bring back).

“Voy a devolver el libro a la biblioteca” (I’m going to take the book back to the library). Those were the days before we downloaded them onto ipads.

Art Expo THE CASINO Mediterraneo at Zenia Bouleavard hs opened their doors to their third art exhibition since they opened their doors on March 26, 2013. The exhibition ‘The Colours of my Land’ features the work of painter Antonio Navarro, better known as ‘Serralta’. He was born in Elche in 1950 and is s a self-taught painter who was attracted to this discipline at a very early age. This week’s opening took place in the Casino along with invited guests and Members of the Association of Alicante Artists, to which the artist belongs,.

Serralta’s love for painting started at around the age of 13 when he started to buy books and taught himself how to mix colours and he started painting on wood veneers, back in the days of the oppressive Franco dictatorship. At 17 years old he continued his studies in Madrid where he began his full fascination with the world of art led to him attending a daily painting studio comprised of several painters, including Jorge Carbonell and José Miguel Ramón.

He sold his first paintings in local art galleries and at the famous El Rastro market. He also taught Fine Arts for two years. In 1973 he decided to return home to Elche and continue his career in oil paintings.

The current exhibition features a collection of paintings in oil and mixed media, with different themes ranging from landscapes to urban impressions from different areas of Spain including Torrevieja, Toledo, Murcia and Valencia. All those who wish to know a little more about the work of Serralta, may do so until 17th September at the Casio Mediterraneo. Entry to the exhibition is free and open seven days a week.

Pompeii I’VE REVIEWED this book before, but look at the date. On the 24 August 79 AD, that’s 1,934 years ago this week, Vesuvius, the menacing volcano that towered over the Bay of Naples, erupted. The result was worldshattering. A column of magna towered 23 kilometres into the sky. Pompeii and much of the bay was engulfed in falling pumice and ash to a depth of fifty feet and then subjected to waves of incandescent gas that destroyed all life. Maybe we should reflect on just how fragile life is Harris bases his story around Marcus Attilius, a young water engineer sent from Rome to replace the former aquarius of the Aqua Augusta, who has disappeared.

Somewhere underground on the flanks of Vesuvius the mighty aqueduct has ruptured, disturbed by the earth movements preceding the eruption, and water supplies to many towns and villas on the bay have been disrupted. Sulphur has entered the meagre water flow, poisoning fish in the fish farms.

All are protents of the mammoth disaster to come. The author introduces the reader to Pliny the Elder and his nephew Gaius, soon to take his place as chronicler of the times as Pliny the Younger. HI AUNTY: I am a ‘silver surfer’ and before Xmas I had a full head of hair. I went back to England and bought a new laptop with Windows 8. Since then I have been pulling my hair out. It won’t allow ‘Hide my IP’, which I had on Windows XP. Also my pictures are all over the place and numerous annoying things keep popping up when you are in the middle of something. I know you can’t do anything about my hair, but would you advise to have 8 taken off and go back to Windows 7? John

If you have an official W7 copy, it may be best to try a ‘dual boot’ which will allow both W7 and W8 on the same PC...and you boot to whichever one you want to.

Aunty says: Many people have been confused with Windows 8, especially when they have been used to W7. However, Microsoft is to release an update to try to make W8 a bit more user friendly, including the return of the ‘Start’ button!

Pop up Purchasing online messages Hello Aunty: Any ideas how to get rid of an annoying big message that comes up every ten minutes which says the copy of windows you are using is not genuine. Thanks (Name withheld!)

Aunty says: Usually, the message will appear if Windows detects you are using a pirated copy of Windows. This is traced by the unique windows product number.

Pirated copies use ‘mass produced’ product numbers, designed for large offices, but these are then leaked onto the internet, meaning people not in that office can use that product number for their copy of Windows.

Your unique windows product number for your version of windows will be on a sticker on your PC. If you have a genuine copy of Windows, and a genuine Windows sticker on the PC, then you should not have any issues: best is to contact Microsoft and get your Windows product number taken off the blacklist.

DEAR AUNTY Virus: When I try to order goods or services online, using my Google Nexus tablet, some sites will not accept my email address. I receive the message ‘email address not valid’. This applies to both my Gmail and Yahoo mail addresses. This is frustrating. Can you help me to resolve this issue? Many thanks, Colin Aunty says: Apparently this is a common issue on some sites, with some email addresses, on some ‘tablets’. Perhaps using the sites ‘app’ rather than accessing the sites in a web browser may work better. Other than that, with no other solutions available that I can see, access the sites using something other than a tablet!

I love it when you talk dirty!

IT CAN’T be easy for all the various other ex-members of ‘Friends’ when they see Jennifer Aniston popping up all over the place, and she’s here again with her latest movie project ‘We’re The Millers’, a film that has been promoted so heavily if it’s not so good there will be an awful lot of folks with crimson faces as opposed to the regular red. The premiere took place last Thursday in London’s Leicester square and now we wait to read what the critics have to say, especially on Jennifer’s work in the movie, as she plays the part of a stripper. Online paper Metro spoke to the lovely Jennifer at the premiere and before the reporter said a word Jen popped in “Do you love me being dirty?” then when asked if she enjoyed turning up the sex appeal she added: “It’s nice to be bad once in a while - I had fun.” Shame on you young lady, cover the vicar’s wife’s eyes if you see her reading this.

Another interesting anecdote comes from Will Poulter, the lad who plays Jennifer’s fake on-screen son who said: “Jen is one of the most humble people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Celebrity clips IF YOU were around in the mid-70s and liked watching children’s TV you could well have been a fan of The Wombles, a show that saw a bunch of – well, Wombles - cleaning up Wimbledon Common, and the word is that Mike Batt, the man behind the project, is planning a new 26-part TV series as well as a featurelength film. The Wombles are also a real group and amazingly appeared at Glastonbury in 2011.

It can’t be easy being a television institution, especially when you get up one morning and decide to either comb your hair differently, or in Jeremy Paxman’s case grow a beard. Prince George is now the most famous baby on the planet, and we found out last week that no expense has been spared for his room at Bucklebury Manor, the Grade II listed building owned by Kate’s parents Carol and Michael Middleton. Bucklebury is a small village in West Berkshire and has a population of just 2000. Double dose o’ dosh issues!

BRUCE WILLIS is the subject of this next item. It is a double header in terms of the information, and both parts of the story are to do with dosh.

Part One of this sorry tale is to do with the commercial Bruce starred in for the new Sky Broadband package, a commercial that has since been removed from the scheduling by order of (ASA), the Advertising Standards Authority. Willis is seen complaining about the speed of his current provider, before a woman tells him:

‘You could try Sky Broadband, it’s totally unlimited, Sky Broadband Unlimited is £7.50 a month, which is less than half BT’s standard price,’ a figure that is actually £14.50 pm and appears in small print at the bottom of the screen … oh dear oh dear. However, as bad as this is, the second part of the Bruce Willis story is even worse! Willis was offered US$3 million for four days’ work in Bulgaria by Sylvester Stallone to appear in The Expendables 3 but demanded $4 million instead, so he has been given the boot!

Life recipe

Mediterranean Stir Fry THIS IS a Mediterranean version of those egg fried rice dishes that are so popular in Chinese restaurants.

THIS ONE uses red peppers and courgettes, but you could substitute peas, sweet corn or aubergine if you prefer.

If you want to spice it up a bit, try adding some finely chopped red chilli.

• 1 medium red pepper de-seeded and diced • 1 medium courgette, sliced lengthways and diced • 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped.

• 200g peeled cooked prawns • 1 egg, beaten • Salt and pepper • The grated rind and juice of a small lemon • A mug of long grain rice • Oil for frying 1. Place the rice in a large pan of boiling water and simmer for 6-7 minutes until just cooked.

2. Meanwhile, using a wok or a large frying pan, fry the diced pepper, courgettes and onion in a splash oil until they have taken on a little colour.

Season with salt and pepper then remove from the pan and set aside.

3. Add the beaten egg to the same pan and cook as for an omelette then, using a wooden spatula, break the cooked egg into small pieces and set aside.

4. When the rice is cooked, strain it then rinse it through with

a kettleful of boiling water.

5. Add more oil to the pan and, over a high heat, add the rice, prawns and diced vegetables and stir fry for 3-4 minutes. Finally, add the lemon rind, chopped egg and a little lemon juice and continue to stir fry until everything is piping hot.

Serve immediately.

Serves: 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes

Don’t forget your sunglasses HOT SUNSHINE, sandy beaches and a sparkling sea are all recipes for a great summer but can cause problems for your eyes. Experts from Specsavers Opticas have released the following advice for keeping your eyes in top condition this summer: PROTECT YOUR EYES FROM THE SUN Phil Morgan, Store Director of Specsavers Benidorm, says: ‘Excessive exposure to UV rays causes a painful irritation to the cornea at the front of the eye. In extreme circumstances this can lead to cancer of the cornea, age related macular degeneration, cataracts and even blindness.’

Everyone should wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun. Check sunglasses comply with UNE-EN 1836:2006 + A1:2008 or bear the CE kite mark and are marked UV 400.

If you already have sunglasses and aren’t sure if they offer the right protection, take them into your local Specsavers to be UV tested. Look for styles which are large, or wraparound to minimise light entering the eyes from the side.

BE CAREFUL OF SAND AND SMALL OBJECTS GETTING INTO YOUR EYE It is easy for sand or small objects to get into your eye when you’re enjoying swimming and spending time on the beach. If this happens take the following steps: Try not to rub your eyes as this could scratch the cornea Do not rinse your eyes with running water: the eye will water to flush out the object naturally If it is still painful and you think the object is still in your eye, go to your nearest opticians who will try to locate and remove the object If this does not help, the Optometrist will refer you to the specialist in the nearest hospital, who will take out the object and prescribe you an ointment to heal any damage caused DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU RETURN HOME TO SEEK ADVICE It is not advisable to wait until you go home to consult the experts. Even something like an eye infection can become serious if it is not suitably treated, so don’t be afraid to go into an optician and ask for help: many speak English.

John Fisher from the UK, holidaying in Denia, felt something blown into his eye. In great discomfort, he tried to rinse the eye with running water. Over the next few hours his vision deteriorated, so he went to Specsavers in Benidorm for advice.

The Specsavers’ team quickly identified that Mr Fisher had a very aggressive infection.

They believed it was caused from something that scratched his eye causing a cut, which was later infected through contact with water. They referred him to the local hospital, stressing

that he must seek help or risk permanent vision loss. Their concern and well explained advice prompted him to go to the hospital and as a result almost 90% of his vision was recovered.

TRAVEL WITH CONTACT LENSES AND GLASSES Using glasses as well as contact lenses are advised whilst on holiday, so don’t leave them at home. Swimming in contact lenses is not recommended, and plane travel and bright sunlight can make eyes dry and uncomfortable for contact lens wearers. Make sure you have enough lenses and cleaning solution for the duration of your trip and take eye drops if you suffer from dry eyes.

Consequence

I HAVE had a wonderful response from readers who have delighted in telling me about the gifted children in their family. As I myself look at the children of today I cannot help but wonder what their lifetime will bring, and how they will adept to their myriad of spiritual skills.

I know that the Crystal Children of now will have to achieve so much more than I did, as the World moves on and shows them their new vibrational identity; and how to use it amid the changes that will be shown them in due course, whether they like it or not.

Sadly many talented children will greatly fear being different and reject their skills without having explored what they could have brought about. Many families will not have the necessary ability to encourage or support the specific spiritual gifts so bestowed; and so many will plow their great gifts into their everyday lives or through a career, or whatever takes their fancy. Spirit has a way of being able to remain dormant pending a time of enlightenment, when they are quick as a whippet and straining in the stalls to present themselves. Fear gone, and new concepts falling rightfully into place they take on where ever they were left off guiding and shepherding whenever appropriate.

Some children are called to connect too quickly by Spirit. The Spirit World has a habit of sending out a message quite openly and yet encrypted spiritually.

If you do respond then there will be no looking back.

I know. It happened to me, and though I knew that I had a lot to learn, I started using my gifts without the threads of showing off or attention seeking, which was anathema to me. I did believe that if I could do something, anything, then everyone else could do it too. I was wrong. We all have specific gifts and talents and if we grow with them then we will have taken the great opportunity sent our way. We can’t all be good at everything, but we also can be very good at something.

They will see the additional five chakras we all have, and they will renew their vows of activating their own DNA knowing that it has twelve strands and not the two we are currently told that we have. Science sees the ten additional strands, but they are known as junk DNA, sometimes referred to as shadow DNA. This DNA when charged brings about the intensity of spiritual energies that many of us have worked so hard on to achieve.

Learning will be just joy for those who love life and who grasp Spirit for just what it is, an invitation to connect any which way as we walk through life. Trying to find just where we came in, and when and where we should go, we can look back at our gifted lives and missed opportunities but also fast forward to what we have yet to discover, knowing that the best is yet to come. The future is in the hands of the young, so may they learn well what they have to and share their gifts fairly and squarely with the Universe in which they dwell.

Kenny, I can’t seem to Meditate. As soon as I try to clear my mind all sorts of things come up which I need to focus on and it destroys my concentration. What can I do? I read that you have a Meditation workshop and I would love to come along. Betty D. Betty, I am so pleased that you have the good intention to learn some Meditation skills. The first rule is that you are not too tired, and that you are comfortable. It is hard to clear your mind, but it may help to close your eyes and to imagine a block of “post it” notes. As you clear your mind imagine that you write the things that are hovering around in your thoughts, on a post it note, and post it on the trunk of an old tree.

When you are good and ready then it is time to make your connection, and you will find that you have created a space in your thoughts. Many people meditate at the wrong time of day. If you are tired and fall asleep then you chose a bad time.

Also remember you are the controlling force of the meditation, don’t necessarily have a regular routine if you do not want one! The Sanctuary is my Meditation course and it runs next in September….all are welcome and no experience necessary!

FOUR TO five years ago I forecast that vehicles of the future will be powered by hydrogen fuel cells and it looks as though I will be proven correct.

Major manufacturers are carrying out extensive research into this form of transferring energy to achieve zero emissions. There are in fact test vehicles on the roads of the USA as I write.

THE BENEFITS INCLUDE: Refuelling can take as little time as 3 to 5 minutes as with petrol/diesel.

The weight penalties of a battery pack are much reduced.

The need to replace the battery pack, or pay a monthly rental fee which amounts to the same cost penalty, is eliminated.

Normal electrical services such as heating and air-conditioning, etc. can be maintained on a long journey.

No problems with pollution when a battery pack has to be scrapped.

No problems in the case of a crash as if the fuel tank is split, hydrogen will be dispersed more quickly, safer than petrol or diesel.

One benefit I forecast is it will greatly reduce the oil companies’ profits.

If you can satisfy certain safety needs, you can have a hydrogen generator the size of a large refrigerator on your property, as only water and electricity are needed to make hydrogen. How the various governments will make up the amount of taxes they will lose as a result has to be figured out yet but no doubt that problem will be overcome. As ‘Fracking’ is being announced as the new source of oil and gas (although there may be

problems with this method) the future is not as bleak for personal transport as we thought ten years ago.

It can be frustrating Noel’s world of golf

SLOW PLAY is the bane of many a golfer. Following a slow group around a golf course for five or more hours is one of the most frustrating things in golf but does this give people the right to be rude and shout at those in front that they perceive as slow?

I was saddened when I visited a golf course just outside Valencia last week when a group of four behind me was shouted at rather rudely by a group of three Spanish men who thought they were good golfers. The three men were following several groups of Fourballs who were all thankfully well within the time allowed to play by the golf course owners.

It was pleasing to see that the golf course was well marshaled with the club employee regularly touring the course and keeping an eye on the players and making sure all were keeping up with the pace of play.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Spanish were way out of order in their behavior and they should have been reported to the marshal and warned that the way they were behaving was totally unacceptable.

The thing is though that it is not just the Spanish who have a problem with slow play.

Unfortunately five hours seems to be the accepted timespan for a competitive round of golf here in

Spain whether that is with a golf society or in an RFEG competition. How that can be justified is beyond my comprehension. Most golf courses have times for nine holes: somewhere between 2 and 2½ hours seems to be the norm. How then do they allow players to take five hours?

Slow play is killing golf. There is little doubt that people are turning their backs on our sport because it now takes almost a day for a game of golf. This was proven to me when I spoke to a society golfer at La Galiana last week. He travelled one hour in his car each way to the golf course. His round took five and a half hours and he had to arrive at least half an hour before his tee time. So his day out playing golf was at least eight hours long and that was before he had a coffee when he arrived or a drink or two after his round. Is it any wonder that people have stopped playing society golf? This is a crazy amount of time to be out playing a sport - almost like going to work for the day! After all it is just as long as a traditional working day with a bit of overtime thrown in.

In America the authorities are implementing measures to stamp out slow play and it will be interesting to see in twelve months’ time whether they

are successful. The thing we all have to do off our own backs is to be more aware of the time we are taking to play a shot. Many times I see people who should be ready to play but they are so engrossed in something else they cause delays. We all have a responsibility to stamp out slow play but I feel it is practically impossible here as it seems so endemic.

I urge all of you golfers to do your bit to rid our game of this nightmare and encourage others to do likewise before we see the six hour round become the norm!

Academy has gone that one step further and now entered into the prestigious Valenciana Federacion Football League for the forthcoming 2012/13 season.

After having such a successful 2011/12 season where Junior Strikers at various age groups won a number of major tournaments and the Vega Baja league title the Academy manager felt that the time was right to enter the Federacion league saying; “Last season was amazing. All of our hard work has now come into fruition, to win major tournaments and the league title was such a fantastic achievement for all concerned at Junior Strikers. The timing had to be right to enter the Federacion League, I now feel that we are ready to compete with the elite clubs in the Fedracion’s Alicante region.”

The Alevin team that Junior Strikers

have entered into the Federacion League have all been working really hard to be ready for their tough season ahead. The team’s hard work has already paid off with a pre season tournament victory at Los Montesinos where they had to play back-to-back games to take the title of winners.

Junior Strikers will also be entering six teams into this year’s Vega Baja league in Pre Benjamin, Benjamin, Alevin, Infantil and Cadete age groups.

The Academy is currently looking for players of all abilities to fill the last remaining limited spaces in their teams for this season, which kicks off on Saturday 20th October. More Money, More Problems!

At the end of last season, the suits at The Emirates told us that Arsenal would have ‘new financial firepower’ this summer and that fans could expect to see somewhere in the region of £70million spent on new players. Three months later however, with the new season already underway, The Gunners have failed to spend a penny, released a dozen first-teamers, picked up a bunch of injuries and were given a hiding off Aston Villa in their opening league game so, unsurprisingly, the natives are becoming restless.

So where’s it all gone wrong? If reports are to be believed, manager Arsene Wenger has so far missed out on Gonzalo Higuain, David Villa and Luiz Gustavo while a rather cheeky bid of just £1 over forty million for Luis Suarez was turned down flat. Blame for the lack of new signings has fallen squarely at the Frenchman’s door but, while I appreciate that his usual penny-pinching transfer policy can be infuriating, I’m not sure it’s entirely his fault this time.

Yes, money is available but, having announced that to the world, every selling club who Arsenal enter into talks with, also knowing that the London club is desperate to buy to appease disgruntled fans, can and will demand a higher transfer fee. Ivan Gazidis has therefore done Wenger no favours at all!

But it’s Arsene’s head on the block so he now has a decision to make. As I said last week, as things stand, I feel Spurs are favourites for 4th spot this season so, does Wenger stick with his cautious, value-for-money, slowly-slowly-catchy-monkey style (and risk his 16-year Champions League record), or break from tradition, get his hand in his pocket and pay over the odds for whatever established, guaranteed performers are still left in the market? It’s a tough one!

The pegs are now in urgent need of work, the reeds closing in and some of the stands beginning to tilt into the water.

Also the river must have recently had extra water in as under the bridge is partly flooded.

It was Bleak, Bleak and more Bleak as the river is teeming with them and the paste anglers were struggling to get their bait to the bottom of the water without it being Well done to Bill Reade with an exceptional weight for below the bridge with 28.280kg.

TORRY HAVE signed another player from Almoradi, centre forward Obele who scored 13 goals in 25 games last season. Let’s hope he can repeat the feat for Torry this season. Torry won both of their last 2 pre-season friendlies against Regional Preferente sides CD Cox and Thader (Rojales) 1-0 . The new league season’s opener is on Sunday at home to CF La Nucia, kick-off 6.30 pm. The club returns to its spiritual home, the Vicente Garcia, for this game. The natural playing surface has had extensive work done on it over the past month or so and is now looking very green and is in excellent condition. Let’s hope Torry play some entertaining football on it and of course win.

Alfaz fantasy football league The 20th Alfaz Fantasy Football League kicked off last Week along with the start of Premier League in which the 9 games produced for the Fantasy 21 goals,6 clean sheets,26 yellow cards and one red one. Arsenal’s Defender Koscienly being dismissed by Referee Antony Taylor after receiving 2 yellow cards. Every time at the beginning of the Season Referees are quick to give Penalties and this Year was no different, with 6 Penalties awarded in the 9 games being played. 3 were saved and the other 3 being converted. Arsenal’s Szczesny, Hull’s Mc Gregor and Liverpool’s new signing Mignolet all enjoying 5 bonus points in this Week’s Fantasy.Mind you Frank Lampard,Benteke and Walters wont be happy losing 5 points.
