Health care at home by JACK TROUGHTON

PEOPLE NEEDING health care over the weekend can now enjoy an expanded service being oﬀered by Benitachell Town Hall. The council’s health department has launched a nursing service to cover those in need “in their own home”. The new service means that over weekends patients will not need to travel to either Javea or Teulada – the nearest health centres. And the town hall maintains that the new service “provides access to basic health services to a large number of patients with mobility problems or who do not own a vehicle.” Councillor for Health Dirk Rheindorf

said the new measures “provided care for those who need it” and said it was “a step forward” for the town’s population. The service is provided by company SVS

– said to have a wealth of experience in home care. Anyone wishing to register for the new service should ring 96 573 9075 between 9am and 1pm, Monday to Friday.

NEWS BITES HEAVY RAIN FLOODS LA CALA AGAIN! THE HEAVY rains that fell on Tuesday saw many parts of the region struggling to cope with the deluge of water that fell in such a short period of time, including La Cala. La Cala de Finestrat became a river from the Marina Baixa avenue down to the sea, something that is now occurring every time the skies open but this time the local police were quick to act and close the areas that are so susceptible to flooding. With 19 litres per square metre falling from the skies the La Cala beach front soon became a river but within half an hour of the rain stopping the roads were reopened and traffic was able to flow again. Benidorm, La Nucia, Alfaz del Pi and other local towns all experienced difficulties with the road networks as roundabouts became lakes and motorists tried to negotiate the shallowest routes. The Guadalest reservoir received a welcome top up but unfortunately for the Callosa Moors and Christians events the sudden downpour meant that some had to be relocated to safer ground. Wednesday morning residents awoke to blue skies and refreshed gardens as reports came in on social media of numerous floods and difficulties for planes landing at Alicante-Elche airport.

NEW €20 NOTE FROM NEXT MONTH THE NEW version of the €20 note will be in circulation from 25th November 2015.

by JEANETTE RICE SPANISH POLICE have announced over the weekend the arrest of 89 people that they believe are part of a network for smuggling Chinese nationals around the world. The Chinese and Pakistani run network is accused of using Spain as a transit point, housing the illegals in apartments and villas in the north east of the country whilst they waited for their documentation to take them to either Ireland, Canada, the United States or

the United Kingdom. In what appears to be a very lucrative business, each person was charged up to 20,000€, half to be paid in advance and the remaining to be paid when they reached their destination. The Interior Ministry spokesperson said “it would appear that if the second payment was not made, the documents were withheld and often family members would be threatened.” Of the 89 arrested, four are charged with belonging to a criminal organisation, falsify-

ing documents and crimes against foreign citizens. The other 85 arrested have been charged with falsifying documents and crimes against foreign citizens. Authorities were alerted to the network following several arrests at airports around Spain. Passport checks discovered many people were travelling on fake passports from countries such as South Korea, Malaysia, Japan and Portugal. Investigations are still ongoing to ensure that this particular network has now been shut down.

The design of the “Europa” series has been based on the “ages and styles” theme as with the first series but with the new notes being visually modified to accommodate a range of new and enhanced security features. Whereas the €5 note has a classical image and the €10 note is Romanesque the €20 note is styled as Gothic. Some of the additional security features include that when you tilt the new note on the bottom left hand side there is the denomination in emerald, the shiny number in the bottom left corner displays an effect of the light that moves up and down. The number also changes colour from emerald green to deep blue. Another new feature is the € symbol can be seen in the security thread on the new banknotes, while the word “EURO” appears in the banknotes of the first series.

Thieves affect train service THE HIGH speed train service that operates through the north east region of Catalonia was forced to stop services after it was discovered that ﬁbre optic cables had been stolen.

The incident, which occurred at the end of last week, saw delays and cancellations with many passengers being stranded in Barcelona. The ADIF (Railway Infrastructure Authority) said that around 7.30am on the Thursday services were halted between Tarragona and Figueres which affected around 7,000 passengers and twenty trains. The fibre optic cables, which run alongside the tracks, are critical for maintaining train safety and although the repairs had been completed by 11am the knock on effect through the day left many frustrated travellers trying to rebook their cancelled journeys. The head of Spain’s Renfe company in Catalonia, Felix Martin, said that “the fibre optic cables had been cut and as they are crucial for traffic control and safety systems we had no choice but to suspend the service temporarily whilst the repairs were made.”

British forces arrive in Valencia

THE PORT of Sagunto, just north of Valencia, saw nearly 400 British military vehicles land on Tuesday in readiness for NATO exercises. The military exercises, called “Trident Jucture”, will involve 30,000 soldiers from 30 countries practising manoeuvres to ensure their readiness and capabilities for the collective defence and crisis management

should the need arise. The British military equipment include armoured trucks and SUV’s together with 35 containers holding vital support supplies. Spain will be contributing 8,000 soldiers to the exercises which will be held until November 16th at various locations in the country as well as in Portugal, Italy and other parts of the Mediterranean and Atlantic ocean.

John West canned over tuna by JACK TROUGHTON

JOHN WEST Foods – the UK’s biggest supplier of tinned tuna – stands accused of going back on a promise to save dolphins, sharks, and turtles from becoming victims of its fishing nets. As long ago as 2011, the company committed to a ‘pole and line’ policy – saying half of its haul of British tuna would be caught using this sustainable technique by the end of last year. The method dramatically reduces the risk of other species being trapped in nets and John West maintained that by the end of 2017 100% of its tuna catch would be via sustainable methods. However, it has emerged in a Greenpeace report into retailers and suppliers that just 2% of John West branded tune is taken using its pole and line policy. The report states that most of the fish is caught using nets which also risks snaring a population of other marine species. Last year it was estimated that ‘accidental catches’ or ‘bycatch’ globally netted 100,000 tonnes – said to be a “significant reason” why six of seven turtle species and a third of sharks face extinction. John West was founded in Liverpool more than 100 years ago but is now owned by a Thai seafood giant and Greenpeace found it the worst of 11 retailers of canned tuna. The survey found Waitrose, Marks and Spencer, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons, had all moved to ‘pole and line’ fishing for their own brand tuna; yet some supermarkets did stock John West. John West said that the stocks of tuna caught by ‘pole and line’ fishing had reduced and there was no longer enough stock to “meet global demand”. However, Greenpeace said John West owned its own fishing fleet and was free to switch to sustainable fishing methods. The charity accused the company of going back on its promises and urged shoppers to change to brands using “sustainable” fishing methods.

ALTEA LAUNCH APP TO HELP RESIDENTS ALTEA TOWN Hall have re-launched an app that allows people to contact them and utilise the services that are available.

The application, which was launched some time ago, hasn’t had the usage that the council would have hoped for so now the town hall is going all out to ensure that everyone is aware of the services that are on oﬀer with a big media campaign. Pere Barber, councillor for Media and New Technologies said “this tool was launched during the last legislature but there are still many who are not aware of it, so we have decided to relaunch the app and advertise it to reach the largest audience as possible. The app is for usage on all types of mobiles and enables users to check out municipal information, both administrative, social or cultural development of the town. Users can see a calendar of events, use the virtual oﬃce and even has a section for complaints or suggestions as well as useful telephone numbers.

Never forget

POPPIES BLOOMED in Benidorm on Wednesday as the Royal British Legion launched the annual appeal to raise money to support those who have served in the armed forces.

Led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, members of the Royal British Legion District North Spain paraded along the promenade of Levante Beach to the cheers and applause of holidaymakers. Standards of the individual branches of the Legion were on show, accompanied by the Union Jack and the Spanish national flag as pomp and circumstance was brought to the fore. Before speeches to launch the appeal, an ever emotional ‘Last Post’ was played, followed by a two minute’s silence to remember those who fell serving their country. Last year’s Poppy Appeal in Spain raised a record 188,324.80€. This year organisers hope to collect even more money. The Legion has adopted a new slogan this year, ‘Live On’. The memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice will be remembered by everyone still living. Founded in 1921 – the year of the first Poppy Appeal – the Royal British Legion will be 95-yearsold next year. District President and British Vice Consul in Alicante Lloyd Milen said the charity was begun by Lance Bombardier Tom Lister who had decided to improve the lot of millions of ex servicemen after the Great War. He said the organisation was granted ‘royal’ status 50 years later for its support of servicemen and women to insure their “sacrifice is never forgotten.” He said the poppy was the symbol of the Legion and “the Poppy Appeal is one of the most important events in our calendar”, adding: “We will make every effort to insure there us an outstanding

amount of money raised in this year’s appeal.” POEM Mr Milen also read ‘We Shall Keep the Faith’ a poem by Moina Michael, written after World War One to remember those who gave their lives in Flanders. He was joined on the podium by British Consul Sarah Jane Morris, the Mayor of Benidorm Antonio Perez and officers of the Legion in Spain. District North Chairman Nigel Hails thanked people for attending the parade and supporting “very deserving beneficiaries” and their dependants. “We must never forget the sacrifices that have been made on our behalf,” he said, people who had served their country and people. And because of modern conflicts such as the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, forces ‘veterans’ were now aged in their 20s and needed the support of the Legion. It was said the 2015 Poppy Appeal needed to raise an “enormous” amount of money to provide “practical, emotional and financial support”. Mayor Perez promised the Legion could always count on the support of the town hall and people of Benidorm. “Benidorm has always been a caring people who have welcomed with open arms who has wished to come and live and work here – in Benidorm, no one feels foreign and the British know that very well...you are a sister country with whom we are always united,” he said. “Together we will overcome adversity as we are now in these times with conflict and war testing our solidarity. “And the Royal British Legion is a role model which insures we will never forget the sacrifices of others on our behalf.”

NEWS BITES PEGGY SKIPWITH’S 100TH BIRTHDAY

MARGARET (PEGGY) Isabel Skipwith has celebrated her 100th birthday at a special party held in her honour at the Javea Golf Club last Wednesday. Margaret, know locally as Peggy, has led a very full and exciting life including working for MI6 before retiring to Javea 47 years ago. Born in India in 1915 Peggy was educated in England before returning to India to work as the Deputy Director of the Womens’ Royal Indian Navy. Following the war Peggy was awarded the OBE for services to the India Navy. Peggy started playing for Javea Golf Club in 1982/83 but her love for golf started when she was a child as both her parents were golfers. Peggy says “I played mainly with my father as my mother was too good.” Although Peggy has recently undergone surgery she hopes to be back on the golf course very soon and remains very active, still driving herself everywhere. At the birthday celebrations Peggy was presented with a silver salver to honour her 100 years and it was also announced that the club will provide a trophy “The Peggy Skipwith Cup” which will be played for in her honour every October, Peggy has also been made an honorary member of the club. The Javea Golf Club celebrated in style with many queueing up to wish Peggy a very happy birthday. Congratulations Peggy, quite a lady.

by JEANETTE RICE TOWNS IN the Marina Baixa have put together plans for connecting their cycle routes similar to that already done in Benidorm. With Benidorm having announced the links between their cycle paths and the towns of Villajoyosa and Finestrat other municipalities are now discussing how to make the two wheeled road system be a continuous link. Benidorm and Alfaz del Pi have drafted a plan which creates a link

on the road to Albir and Villajoyosa plans including improving access to Finestrat before the end of this year. The overall objective is to have a cycle path which links Altea, Alfaz del Pi, Benidorm and Villajoyosa enabling cyclist to travel safety and continuously. Some of the problems that need to be overcome are areas such as Finestrat where placing a cycle path that is safe for all is proving to be diﬃcult however Juan Francisco Perez, mayor for Finestrat has said it is

their intention to create the bike path, and it has already made the technicians of the council aware. Snr Perez said “we are waiting for the redevelopment of Marina Baixa avenue and we will then start the works, we will deal with the safety issues and plan to have this all done next year.” The councils involved are making budgetary arrangements for the plans to be included in their 2016 budgets, with the northern towns looking to add 2.8 kilometres of cycle path to the existing ones.

Be aware of mental health issues EXPATS ARE being urged to prepare in advance for the special needs of visitors who may have mental health issues. A joint campaign between the Foreign Office and the UK-based Mental Health Foundation seeks to raise awareness of how simple steps in preparation can help travellers. The advice was publicised in tandem with World Mental Health Day last Saturday – British Consulates in Spain were involved in 67 mental health needs over the last 12 months. Will Middleton, Consular Regional Director for Spain, said: “Staff in our consulates in Spain are seeing more cases involving mental health - a deterioration in mental health whilst visiting a foreign country can cause considerable distress; both to the person concerned and to family and friends in Spain, as well as back in the UK. “So if you have a guest who has mental health needs; do take some simple steps to help insure their visit is trouble free and enjoyable for everyone concerned.”

TRAVEL And Jenny Edwards, the chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, added: “Many people living in the UK with mental health conditions manage them well day

to day. However, there are a few extra things to consider when travelling abroad. “Check your travel insurance covers pre-existing mental health conditions before travelling and make sure your medication is legal, available and sufficient for your trip. “Changes to your travel itinerary or a delayed flight could impact on mental health needs so it is important to travel prepared.” Jenny advises travellers to keep medication in hand lug-

gage; to record health contact numbers in the UK; and to locate local health services in advance. She said: “By following these simple steps, a relaxing trip can easily be enjoyed.” Hosts in Spain are invited to ask visitors to check they have travel insurance – and whether it covers pre-existing conditions; a valid EHIC card; medication and an adequate dosage for both their stay and any unforeseen delays; and an emergency contact for mental health issues.

September attracts more than 300,000 new passengers SEPTEMBER WAS yet another month of record at El Altet airport in Alicante-Elche. Top of the passenger numbers list continued to be the British who accounted for 483,000 passengers in September, showing that tourism has returned to the area for the Autumn. In the first nine months of the year, the airport has seen a gain of 315,118 passengers over September 2014 with the airport reckoning on showing a new year on year record over 2014. At year end, December 2014, the terminal had received more than 10.6 million passengers with the airport having already received more than half a million more passengers this September than in September 2014, which was also a record month for El Altet with 1,097,645 passengers. This was a figure that had never been reached before in that month and this September, 2015 showed an increase of 4.6% over the same month last year, 2014. It was also a history making summer at the terminal, which has registered record highs every month since April, 2015.

UPDATE – Driving examiner protest by JEANETTE RICE THE DRIVING examiners in Alicante who have been part of a national protest have now announced a full strike day for October 21st. Following on from the RTN report a few weeks ago when it was announced that as from September 14th most of the 24 DGT staff in Alicante would not work between the hours of 12 noon and 3pm each day and until their demands were met, the situation has not improved. In a nationwide strike action the examiners have requested that changes are made to how they inform a student if they have passed or failed. They state that as they deliver this information out on the street they are vulnerable to extreme reactions by those who may have failed, with some examiners in the country finding themselves hospitalised. Whilst this has not yet happened in Alicante the examiners feel that to avoid such an incident the reporting of the results should be delayed or given in a safer environment. The examiners also want the amount of tests performed each day reduced from the thirteen that they currently do and increased staffing to help with the ongoing demand. The new one day action that is planned has been called as the Asextra (Association of Traffic Examiners) say that the DGT

is not prepared to negotiate and that they have no choice but to increase their protest. They go on to say that examiners have not had a pay rise in ten years and that morale is at the lowest ever as rumours are abound about the possible privatisation of the service. One incident that occurred last week has reinforced the need to see changes in the current system after a man who was taking his test failed to stop at a pedestrian crossing and was subsequently told that he had not passed, the man then decided to threaten the instructor and examiner. The president of Asextra said “we are simply asking that the results are released twenty four hours after the test, making it safer for the examiners who may be at a remote location when the test is ﬁnished.”

The DGT say that the eight recorded attacks in 2014 and the ﬁfteen recorded so far this year do not “represent a serious problem” and do not justify the changes that are being requested. With 80% of examiners taking part in the actions so far over 45,000 driving exams nationwide have had to be suspended. Francisco Camarillo from the CSIF labour union, which is supporting the examiners, said

“we are not asking them to lower the number to seven, as in the Netherlands, for example, it just doesn’t make sense for the DGT to tell drivers that they should take a rest every two hours, when our members have to spend all day in the car.” The examiners, of which there are over 700 nationally, are hoping that a resolution can be found to avoid them having to take the strike action on October 21st.

NEWS BITES IMMIGRANTS ARRESTED IN LA AZOHÍA

THE GUARDIA Civil discovered four immigrants on the beach at La Azohía in the Bay of Mazarrón. Red Cross volunteers treated the immigrants, all of whom appeared to be in good health. The police arrested at dawn on Wednesday four immigrants of Algerian origin who were wandering along the beach of La Azohía in Cartagena, with obvious signs that they had reached the coast aboard a small boat. The Guardia Civil intercepted the immigrants between 11pm Tuesday and 4am Wednesday , although the small boat had not been located by late Wednesday.

Cursed artefacts being returned VISITORS TO Pompeii who have sneaked away with more than just their souvenir shop memories are now ﬁnding themselves victims of a run of bad luck. In what some are calling a punishment from the gods with items being cursed tourists are sending back artefacts that have been removed from the historic Roman city. Massimo Osanna, Pompeii’s archaeological superintendent, said he had received up to a hundred packages from across the world in recent years containing items from the site, often accompanied by letters explaining the relics had

brought them bad luck. These items have included a bronze statue that disappeared in 1987. The statue was returned with a letter sent from Spain saying that their entire family had been cursed. One English woman recently sent back about 10 mosaic tiles that her parents had collected them during the 70’s and that now her mother had died she wanted to return the items. Mr Osanna said that he is thinking of creating an exhibition entitle “what I brought back from Pompeii” to show visitors the letters that have been received.

National Police warn of internet scams THE NATIONAL Police have published details to help protect internet users who may fall foul of the “smart” system that offers free wifi. In their statement they say that not only are the people offering the service committing a crime but that as a user you may be leaving yourself open to connections that are not fully protected. The advice given from the police is to consult a free service called OSI (Oficina de Seguridad del Internauta) which is there to help internet users surf the web as safely as possible. The department offers free tools to help protect computers, laptops, phones and tablets and also has a blog which explains how to make sure you have the right level of protection. The only downside is that currently English is not offered as a language option but the site does translate well using google. For further information go to www.OSI.es.

A faulty switch caused blackout

by JEANETTE RICE IN THE early hours of Wednesday morning Gibraltar suﬀered a complete blackout due to faulty equipment. At approximately 5am on Wednesday morning power was non existent on the Rock as a damaged switch gear at the Montague substation was blamed by the Gibraltar Electricity Authority. Whilst most houses and businesses

were reconnected by 11am irate residents took to the companies social media page to bombard them with complaints. One angry mother, Natalie Donaldson, wrote “what a joke? I have had to give my 6 month old baby a yoghurt as I cannot warm a bottle, also my toddler’s nursery has been closed.” As accusations started ﬂying about the

power failure Mr Daniel Feetham, leader for the opposition said “the power cuts are absolutely scandalous and are still an issue one week before Chief Minster Fabien Picardo calls a general election.” The opposition are now saying that after four years of the GSLP/Liberals being in power their energy policy is causing the regular, lengthy and costly power failures.

Catalonia held the November 9th 2014, referendum even thought it had been suspended by Spain’s Constitutional Court. Artur Mas is under investigation for grave disobedience, abuse of public funds, prevarication, usurping powers and obstructing justice. If tried and found guilty, he could face disqualiﬁcation from oﬃce or up to one year in jail. As he walked towards the court he was joined by around 400 pro independence mayors and a supported cheering crowd.

TWO OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil in Málaga were injured on Wednesday evening when they were involved in a car chase during an anti-drug operation. The Guardia Civil oﬃcers were in pursuit of two vans which they believed to be carrying drugs as the chase took them down the A-92 (km 14) located near Villanueva del Trabuco.

One of the vans then rammed the police vehicle as it tried to evade capture as at around 6.20pm the emergency services in Andalusia received a call from an unnamed individual who said that a van had collided with a patrol car. Two of the oﬃcers were taken to hospital along with a young North African man who was travelling in the van. Following thorough medical examinations at the regional hospital of Antequera the oﬃcers were released, although it

has been reported that they were suﬀering from concussion. The injured suspect underwent surgery on Thursday morning for amongst other things a broken femur and is under police guard until he can be oﬃcially questioned. The suspect vehicle was found to be carrying 1,900 kilos of hashish and police now have three men in custody, including the man who has undergone surgery.

NEW BIRTH REGISTRY PROCEDURES

ON THURSDAY 15th October the procedure for registering births in Spain changed so that parents now do not have to go to a Civil Registry. The new law, which was passed in July, means that new births can be registered at the hospital where the birth occurred making it easier for the parents to focus on their new arrival. The hospitals must electronically transmit the necessary documentation within 72 hours of the birth should the parents choose to use the facility, which is free, or they can continue to use the Civil Registry. Migrants offered free train tickets by Jeanette Rice

AS THE migrant crisis continues to hit the news headlines the SNCF French rail company has been accused of offering free rail tickets for travel into the country. The information came to light when an internal memo was leaked which discussed “zero euro reservations in exceptional measures”. Officials working for the company said that the allegations of people caught up in the migration crisis being allowed to travel for free were not true, and that the memo only referred to the reservation fees being waived nothing else. The spokesperson for the company said that they would never offer migrants free tickets to travel in France or to cross via the tunnel into Britain. He said “there are no free tickets, everyone is checked in the same, and if they do not have a ticket they will be fined irrespective of if they are a migrant or not.” According to the SNCF spokesperson the only procedure put in place was that due to the difficulties in language some passengers had not understood that they needed to reserve their seat. This also caused issues when they needed to use automatic ticket machines without credit cards. The spokesperson said “as far as we are concerned, these are not fraudsters trying to profit, they are people in an exceptional situation who are often very upset and tired, it would be normal for us to treat them with humanity.” SNCF staff have been told to use their discretion although a row has now erupted with the French far right politicians outraged that special measures are being used for migrants. Marine Le Pen, the National Party president has accused the company of “doing the people smugglers dirty work for them”. It has been reported that even though free train tickets may have not have been issued the xenophobic feeling in France has been increased by the incident just prior to the important regional elections due to be held in December. France’s Socialist prime minister, Manuel Valls, said in a statement “every passenger has to have a ticket and everyone is subject to the same checks.”

AMAZON “SUPER MARKET” DELIVERIES IN SPAIN REGULAR USERS of Amazon may have noticed that they are now able to order food items on the popular internet delivery site. This is because Amazon have decided to take on the Spanish grocery market with a new “supermarket” section where customers can buy a wide range of non perishable food items and cleaning products. Using the Amazon app, orders are received and delivered within 24 hours for Prime customers with no delivery charges. The company is also oﬀering Madrid residents same day delivery if the order is received before 2.45pm. The director general of Amazon Spain, François Nuyts, said the move is an “important step” for the company. “Our food store will be open 24 hours, seven days a week. From now on customers can buy thousands of products at a click without having to wait in line,”

Lewis Hamilton speaks out Poldark filming stop-start THE FILMING of the very popular Poldark is experiencing unscheduled stoppages as the leading actor Aidan Turner keeps getting caught with his e-cigarette. The programme, which is set in the 18th century and filmed in Cornwall, has begun filming for its second series but many on set are said to be tired of re shooting scenes because Aidan still has his e-cigarette glued to his hand. The BBC period drama heads have now had to assign a crew member to specifically be responsible for ensuring that the actor does not get filmed “vaping” or having it within visible shot whilst filming is going on. Fans who have been trying to get a glimpse of the 32 year old heartthrob on set have also commented on what seems to be his obsession with the device with one fan saying “many times we have heard “action” and Aidan still has the device in his hand, he was puffing on it constantly, even when the make-up department were trying to touch up his scar he was puffing on this thing”. Filming began in September and will continue until April 2016, but the BBC have not yet released when the programme will be aired.

LEWIS HAMILTON spoke out this week about the formula one podium incident which has seen him being accused of spraying the Russian President with champagne. The formula one driver was celebrating his win of the race on Sunday and as well as his teams constructors’ championship title with the traditional spraying whilst Vladimir Putin was still in the podium area. Lewis told Sky Sports television that although the images appear to show the President getting a shower he didn’t in actual fact catch Mr Putin. Lewis said “I actually didn’t, I didn’t spray him although there is a weird picture that makes it appear as if that is what happened.” This is not the ﬁrst time Lewis Hamilton has been in trouble for his podium spraying. In April he was criticised and accused of sexist bullying for supposedly aiming a spray of champagne directly into the face of a Chinese Grand Prix hostess in Shanghai. In photographic evidence the young lady was seen ﬂinching and although she played the incident down social media in Britain, Germany and China condemned the driver for his behaviour.

U3A says ‘farewell’ to Max

by Jack Troughton MEMBERS OF U3A Marina Baixa have bid farewell to 78-year-old Max Williams, a stalwart of the association. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on 30th September and leaves his wife Marie, children and grandchildren. Max was an active member of U3A and went on many of the trips and meals out as well as enjoying the weekly ‘Chaps Chatter over Coffee’ group – the week before his passing, Max and Marie had been on the U3A visit to Mar Menor and Cartagena. A retried BP employee, Max was originally from Sheffield, and the couple enjoyed life to the full in France before moving to Spain. And his family paid tribute, saying: “To the world Max was one man, to us Max is the world. We have lost, heaven has gained.”

THE TYPICAL image of the Costa Blanca is one of sun, sea and sand but the tourism oﬀering goes far beyond the most popular attractions to the region. Last week the Costa Blanca Tourism Board looked at other options by creating a tourist route that can be shared by diﬀerent municipalities throughout the province. This was the message given by the Vice President and Deputy of Tourism, Eduardo Dolon, to members of the Tourism Association of Alicante Interior, who

met in Alcoy to outline the details of this new initiative and discuss ﬁrst hand the priorities of this sector, that year after year, have raised more and more interest among visitors. “Among the priorities of the Provincial Government is the promotion of domestic tourism. Therefore, the Costa Blanca Tourism Board are working on creating a very powerful route that runs from north to south, covering the inland areas of our province,” pointed out Dolon. INVITATION TO N332 GUARDIA CIVIL TRÁFICO PRESENTATION TO ADAPT

ADAPT (The Association of English Speakers) of San Pedro del Pinatar has organised a presentation, in English, by the Guardia Civil Tráfico officer behind the highly successful N332 initiative to assist English speakers with Spanish Traffic Law and safety on the roads. He and his colleague will be making a presentation entitled “Spanish Traffic Law. Changes and Most Common Doubts”, for ADAPT members on Wednesday 21st October 09:45 for 10:00 in the Casa de Cultura in San Pedro del Pinatar.

Anyone is welcome to attend but there is a limited number of seats available for this presentation. Because of this, anyone interested in attending should email the Secretary of ADAPT to request a seat (secretaryadapt@outlook.com). A map of location of the Casa de Cultura will be sent by reply. The Taxman and his “superpowers”! You’ve probably heard about the changes coming into effect from 1st January 2016 on how financial information is exchanged between Spain and the UK. The UK has been a leader in the development of automatic exchange of information to help combat tax evasion. In April 2013 the UK along with France, Germany, Italy and Spain (the G5) set up a pilotscheme to explore the possibility of developing a common approach to automatic exchange of financial account information. In February 2014 the Model Competent Authority Agreements for a Common Reporting Standard (CRS) was approved by the G20 as the Global Standard for Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information. Under the new regulations, financial institutions will be required to capture information in relation to accounts in existence as at 31 December 2015, and new accounts opened on or after 1 January 2016 with first reporting in 2017. Information such as names, addresses, tax identification numbers, balance/value of assets, interest and dividend payments and any gross proceeds from the sale of financial assets will be collected.

The information will be passed to the taxman and if there is any suspicious activity further investigation into where the money came from originally may be carried out. So, whereas before, information between the two countries was only exchanged where there was firm suspicion of tax evasion, now the information will be automatically exchanged. What should you do? Firstly ensure that you are correctly declaring assets to the correct tax authorities. This might be by ensuring you submit a Moduelo 720 for assets above €50k outside of Spain or by reviewing what tax should be paid to what tax authority (UK or Spain?) This might be a good time to consider whether your savings and investments are tax efficient to you as Spanish Ex Pat. Whatever your current situation, now is a good time to review your financial position and seek advice on how to ensure you are ready for the changes.

WITH CHRISTMAS just 10 weeks away the supermarkets are targeting festive shoppers with offers and discounts in a bid to give their sales figures a seasonal boost. Carrefour are offering their Xmas hampers for sale along with the stores beginning to “look a lot like Christmas” and Lidls has launched its campaign with customers being offered a 15% discount if they purchase any for bottle of wine within the 24 choices of that are on offer., particularly promoting Spanish wines. Although ten weeks may seem such a long time away at least in Spain there are enough fiestas to distract from the pressures that the festive season can put on families, albeit a temporary distraction. In the UK no sooner are the Easter eggs off the shelf than the Christmas cards and fake trees are taking their place, with constant television advertising of what are this years “must haves.” With the expat love for “a little bit of England” when they are here in Spain there are plenty of Spanish shops now stocking

the more English advent calendars alongside their traditional more religious themed ones. Most of the supermarket chains have special online offers so if now is the time that if you are looking to start buying those gifts it is worth checking out what discounts are on offer before heading off to the stores.

PRIMARK CONTINUES to grown in Spain as their new flagship store in Madrid opens its doors to the public. The store, which is located in the historic building of “Almacenes Madrid-Paris’ on the Gran Via, is the 41st for Spain and employs 573 staff. The new store covers 133,000 square feet of retail space over five floors in the building originally built back in 1924. A spokesperson for the popular chain said “Spain has been one of our most important markets in Europe since we opened our first store in 2006.”

International day against breast cancer by Jeanette rice MONDAY 19th October is International day against breast cancer and towns around the region have announced their plans to show support for the annual event. The Cancer Association of La Nucia has organised a day of support on Sunday 18th October for the fourth consecutive year with a giant pink ribbon set to be placed on the Placa Major steps at 11.30am. In the afternoon there will be a fundraising event to help raise money for cancer research. This will be in the form of drinks and tapa for 2.50€ and the local sports clubs and associations holding small exhibitions. Benidorm will also be marking the international event with the placement of a large pink bow hanging from the town hall balcony until next week and plans for various events to mark the occasion. A march through the town, departing from the Plaza Sus Majestades Reyes de España at 9.45am on Sunday 18th, will be followed by zumba and food in the Avenida de Bilbao. Benidorm has also planned a film forum, conferences and information stands for different parts of the town, culminating in a human chain on Monday 19th at 6pm also at the Plaza Sus Majestades Reyes de España where pink and white balloons will be released for all women with breast cancer. He was raising funds for the church and the Stroke Association, and was joined in the air by friend and retired RAF pilot Colin McNae, who jumped to raise cash for the church and the Royal Air Force Association Costa Blanca Branch, where he is Vice Chairman. The jump took place at Castellon airﬁeld and involved a thrilling 50 seconds in freefall before another seven minutes gently ﬂoating to earth and admiring the views. To give extra bite to the occasion, organisers reintroduced a competition to find the best creation – all tapas must have seafood as a main ingredient – and 20 restaurants were keen to take the title. Restaurante Calima was judged to be the winner with a delicious ‘papillote’ of sea bass and clams in a crunchy coating on bread. However, the local business association voted the whole event a huge success in its fourth year and it is already planning next year’s event, the festival now a firm fixture on the Costa Blanca calendar.

MELODY MAKERS International, the Costa’s premier choral group, wowed audiences at Benidorm Palace last Sunday whilst appearing in a Charity Variety Show organised by Stevie Spit. Conducted by their founder, Nigel Hopkins, the choir sang an exciting medley of songs from Phantom of the Opera, sending the sell-out audience into ecstatic applause. The show, which was in aid of both Help For Heroes and the Elche Children’s Hospice, also featured impressive performances from comedian Jimmy Cricket, Chesney Hawkes and Stacey Solomon, and was compered by the show’s organiser, Stevie Spit. Melody Makers are now in rehearsal for their next major production, “That’s Entertainment”, which will take place at the Orihuela Costa Resort in January.

Make a wish charity day GIVING4GIVING has been open for 3 years and has raised and donated a staggering 32,840€ to Cancer Charities on the Costa Blanca. On October 18th they will be holding a fundraiser for Fundacion Pequeno Deseo – make a wish foundation at Buddies Bar on Calle Ibiza in Benidorm. Raising funds to make a wish come true for very sick children. The star studded afternoon starts at 2pm and continues through the afternoon until about 6pm with many of the Benidorm artists performing to help raise funds. This includes the Adele tribute, The Blues Brothers, Route 66, The Rat Pack, Sister Act, Jessie Brooke and many more. There will be a raﬄe and auction with some amazing prizes and although the event is to raise as much as possible it is also a chance for the whole family to have a great afternoon. My Father, however, loathed it with the passion he never showed Mum or me. Mind you he loathed pretty much everything, – Chelsea F.C. (Fulham fan), Squirrels,Yogi Bear, Foreigners,Meccano, Richard Whiteley et al. He was an equal opportunities misanthrope. From the moment I heard Elvis I wanted in. I wanted the whole enchilada – the swagger, the greasy pompadour, the leather jacket,the motor cycle, the adoration of All American pony tailed petticoated Tuesday Weld lookalikes or Big Bad Blond Bombshell Mamie Van Doren tight sweatered doppelgangers. (If Jayne Mansfield wasn’t available Mamie was your Go-To-Girl). Sadly I was 13 years old,and due to family financial constraints, the last of 350 lads at school (Our Sacred Lady Of Budding Sociopaths) wearing short grey trousers and an outgrown blazer that resembled a ratty waistcoat that Albert Steptoe would have rejected (mind you I can see Comrade Corbyn giving it a go). So Messrs Dean,Brando & assorted Jets & Sharks could rest easy. UK rock ‘n’ roll was in the main second rate compared to the US. For every Chuck Berry we had a Craig Douglas. For Eddie Cochran – Eden Kane. For Jerry Lee, I give you, Jess Conrad. I rest my case M’lud. I once interviewed Jess at his posh pad. Bearing in mind in the 70’s Kenny Everett compiled an album of the Worlds Worst Records, and of the 20, Jess had 3 – ‘This Pullover’ - ‘Why Am I Living?’ - ‘Cherry Pie’. When I rather snidely pointed this out to Jess he languidly replied “My dear chap, when you drove up did you not notice the huge garden? The gardens were a thing of Capability Brown bucolic beauty. In the 2 hours there I inhaled more grass than Bob Marley did in his entire lifetime. “Yes,very impressive” I replied. “Well the ‘turtleneck’ tune bought that. Did you happen to espy the Olympic size swimming pool?” “Yes” I mumbled. “Well the ‘death’ ditty paid for that. And my Rolls Royce? The ‘pudding’ poem purchased that with change left over for a cabin cruiser.” Never mind your Cherry Pie Jess – this humble pie is hard going. If anyone is daft enough to give me a gig on a radio station here, I’ll play all 3 as a penance.

Altea October race success

NEW BROLLY’S FOR JAIME I IN BENIDORM

LAST FRIDAY Altea held their traditional fun run with over 350 participants taking part. The races were split into 4km and 8km distances for adults and 100 metres and 1000 metres from the children, of which there were over 200 taking part. The adult races started at 10am and were followed by the kids races at midday and a special race for the less able was also held. The weather was ideal for the competitions and no sooner had the adult 4km race started it seemed that it was over as the winner José Antonio Benavente, CA La Nucia, crossed the line with a time of 13 minutes and 22 seconds. In second place was Manuel Thrown, CA La Nucia and in third was Vicente Moncho with a time of 13 minutes and 53 seconds. For the women’s 4km Maria Fuentes got the first place with a time of 15 minutes and 15 seconds. In second place was Lioba from CA La Nucia with a time of 15 minutes and 35 seconds and in third place was Alba Feliz from CA Benidorm with a time of 17 minutes and 4 seconds. In the 8km race first place went to Riehen Ahmed El Jaddar with a time of 27 minutes and 48 seconds; followed in second place by Ruben Caballero, with a time of 29 minutes and 33 seconds. Third place went to Aitor Cabezas, with a time of 30 minutes. For the women’s 8km race Carmen Sala was first with a time of 35 minutes with María del Pilar Rubio taking second in 37 minutes and 6 seconds. Third place went to Sandra Wiik with a time of 40 minutes and 3 seconds. All runners received a t-shirt and energy drink donated by Grupo Brotons.

THE Avenida de Jaime I in Benidorm has received approval to install a prototype “umbrella” which will create spaces of shades whilst still oﬀering ventilation for those taking shelter. The Advisory Council for Urban Scene in Benidorm has approved the project to install the new geometric metal looking trees which will also act as light reﬂecting screens at night. Jose Ramon Gonzalex de Zarate, councillor for Urban Scene, said the idea was “to combine the new elements with trees which will be planted in the avenue, where the sun creates problems for pedestrians.” The prototypes will then be the subject of a survey where the opinion and responses from the citizens will decide whether to install them elsewhere in the town.

Not farewell, just bon voyage

AS RASTRO El Cisne celebrated their 25h Anniversary on Sunday it was also bon voyage to the very well loved John the fiddler who has been a feature at the rastro for the past 14 years. The rastro El Cisne was packed to the rafters on Sunday as hundreds gathered to celebrate the venue that has been running 25 years. It was a bitter sweet day though as John Smithson, better known as John the fiddler, was saying farewell to Spain for a while as he heads off to entertain passengers on their Mediterranean cruises with his unique style of violin playing as well as keyboards, guitar and vocals. John first came to the Costa Blanca back in 1983 when his father opened a bar called the “Wishing Well” in Benidorm which favoured live music. Prior to that John’s career in the music business saw him perform with his band “The Mobiles” on Top of the Pops back in 1981. Their single “drowning in Berlin” was in the top ten and the band performed several times on the popular music programme. In 1989 John performed with Jason Bonham and the band achieved a gold disc for half a million sales with their “wait for you” single as they toured worldwide for 11 years. John said “I have been fortunate enough to perform with Rod Stewart, Paul Rodgers, Brian May, Slash, Sammy Hagar, Uriah Heep and so many more amazing musicians in my career, I have loved being here in Spain but feel it is time for something different, I am not saying goodbye, as I hope to return in the future.” John has been responsible for providing the El Cisne customers with their live entertainment for the past 14 years and has given many new comers the opportunity to showcase their talents and reach a wider audience. The 25th anniversary party at El Cisne continued long into the evening with the artists entertaining the packed venue until gone 9pm on Sunday. John said “it was a brilliant day, I was overwhelmed with good wishes and the acts that performed did an outstanding job of keeping the party mood going well into the evening.” The customers were treated to John doing his last performance, Lesley Ann Goode, Zoie Wainwright, the New Boys, Timeless, Jim Rhodes, Ron Soul and Simon Patrick. Simon, better know as Elvis, danced on the tables and wowed his audience with his tribute to the late rock legends unique leg and hip shaking. The Rastro El Cisne will continue to provide live entertainment for its customers as well as the ever popular jugs of sangria. No flights?

IT IS little wonder that winter tourists are unwilling to fly to Spain as the airlines are not offering the required flights. Most airlines do not fly to San Javier, Murcia from November to April and passengers are just expected to fly to Alicante and pay transfer costs as well as suffer the pains of Alicante Airport and extra travel time to reach destinations in the golfing regions. Winter flights have always been provided to Murcia so why have they been withdrawn both last winter and this coming season also? None of the airlines’ staff or cabin crew know why this decision has been. I have complained, and I await a reply. This is just not good enough for all the passengers regularly using San Javier. I for one will not use Alicante and pay extra charges so no winter visit from me! Beryl Hatton

La Cala Crane There is a freestanding crane at the bottom of Avinguda Mariners de La Vila Joyosa (near La Cala beach) that is not tied in to the adjacent unfinished building. It is potentially dangerous as it overhangs the road. Are the owners waiting for it to rust and collapse or to be struck by lightning and collapse as has happened recently in Mecca? It has been left standing like this for years. I am aware of others in La Cala who are expressing concern over the safety of this crane. Would any readers of RTN know of any information regarding this subject? Something needs to be done about this before someone eventually gets killed when this crane falls over. Phil, La Cala

Troubles cause patience Kudos to the Cops for how they helped me. Here is what happened, a bus hit and damaged my parked car but thankfully there were witnesses to what happened. However they did not record the registration plate of the bus. I reported the accident together with some photos of my damaged car to the Police station near Carrefour in Torrevieja. They made a report and asked if there were witnesses. I said there were and they asked me to bring them to the police station for interviews, which I did. The police promised to investigate. After a couple of weeks they informed me that, based on the interviews and a search at different bus companies, they had found the bus and the insurance company responsible and that I could come to the station and collect a report, which was enough to make a claim. I handed over the report to my insurance company who made

the claim to the bus company’s insurance company. My insurance company told me to do nothing with the damaged car because an inspector from the other insurance company wanted to inspect the damages. Nothing happened for two weeks and when contacting my insurance company they told me that, as two weeks had passed, now my (instead of theirs) insurance company were able to inspect the damage and go ahead and have the car repaired. So they did and after a few days I could collect my car without paying anything. I had to keep reminding myself the need for patience. What I learnt and what can be of interest is that I received the very best service from the Police. They advised me what to do, they were very polite and comforting and they spent many more hours on the case than could be expected. I am most grateful to the Police. Some people hate Police and hug thugs, that sort of thinking is completely backwards.The insurance company who had to pay had tried to get rid of the case by not being able to reach, not answering letters, not calling back etc. I had to keep reminding myself, patience, patience, patience, don’t get upset. The Spanish legal process is slow and very time consuming. From the accident to the day I collected the repaired car seven weeks had passed. KIRSTY RICHARDSON helped by members of Jalon Valley’s Stitchcraft Group finished a 20-year labour of love in time for her mother’s 90th birthday on 5th October – a handmade quilt. Kirsty began making the cover using scraps of material that recalled memories of her childhood. Mum Janet often asked when she was going to receive the handiwork but over the years life tended to get in the way and until recently it remained unfinished. She knew Janet was coming to Spain to celebrate her birthday milestone and would be amazed and delighted to receive the long-awaited quit as a present – but Kirsty despaired of making the deadline. However, when she went to a Charities Fair at the los Arcos Restaurant in Pedregeur in the summer she recruited some helping hands at the Jalon Valley HELP craft stall. The Stitchcraft Group offered their services and over the last few months spent 106 hours working on the quilt – Jenny Tollan completing 90 hours of sewing despite having a pacemaker fitted during the period. And so the finished quilt was presented back to Kirsty at the Lliber Summer Fair – in plenty of time for Janet’s big birthday. She was so pleased with the result she immediately made a substantial donation to the charity. Thanking Kirsty for her generosity, charity President Elaine Horton said: “It is great to know we

HARVEST HOME IN ALBIR

THE ALBIR Church of England celebrated its Harvest Thanksgiving on Sunday 4th October – the Day of St Francis of Assisi.

Produce donated by the congregation will be taken to the Gandia Hospice where the church helps to cater for 60 men and the Franciscan Brother who look after them. A congregation of 29 enjoyed the service and was pleased to be able to welcome some visitors to the church. Afterwards 14 people stayed to enjoy a choice of chicken or vegetable soup as part of the monthly ‘Soup Sunday’ fundraiser. Albir Church of England is part of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy and services are held at the Norwegian Seaman’s Church in Carrer Mart, Albir, every Sunday at 9.45am. There is also a midweek service on Thursdays at 11am at the Forum Mare Norstrum, Alfaz del Pi. And the church has the following diary dates. International Day celebrations

BENIDORM CELEBRATED International Day on Saturday at the Parque de L’Aiguera with representations from over 22 countries. The event, which was the third for the town, was a fun day offering all nationalities the chance to unite together and share tastes in music, food and dance. The official ceremony welcoming the participating countries paid tribute this year to the Cecilia Kruijk Hoogendijk, a woman who moved to Benidorm many years ago with her family and has become an example of integration and involvement as founder and president of the Association of lace makers, member of the Association of Housewives, secretary of the Brotherhood of Rocio and peñista. The event offered BBQ food, tapas and many other international tastes as well as a chance for charities to raise funds for their causes. Jodi Gagg was working hard at the Animal Angells stall but was able to take a few moments to have a bit of fun with the mayor of Benidorm, Toni Perez as they posed together with another helper Emma Thomas for a selfie. Jodi said “we managed to raise just over 150€, which all goes to help the animals, people are very supportive.” In his closing speech for the event Toni Perez highlighted the attributes of Benidorm, a town that has never looked at any anyone as from where they have come Jodi and the Mayor from, but for where they are.

Are you one of those affected by the Volkswagen scandal? To see if you could be a victim of this fraud, on the the Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda websites, you can check whether your car model is one of those affected. If you are unsure, you can also request a review of your vehicle by a specialist garage, or check it with your car dealer. If it is confirmed that you are one of those affected, before any legal action, we must wait and see what VW’s final decision is and what they offer, as apparently they will contact the owners of ‘rigged’ vehicles in the coming days. In principle VW should fix the problem and compensate consumers for any damages caused by this fraud, ie: 1) They should call you for a revision of the vehicle and remove the device. This revision must be totally free, including labor, parts, repairs, etc. 2) They should compensate for any damage caused by the review,that is, if you must go to work and have to leave the car in the workshop, they should pay the transport or provide you with a replacement car free of charge. 3) After removing the fraudulent system, the vehicle must pass the Vehicle Technical Inspection (ITV) successfully. It is also recommended that after the review, VW will certify new car emissions and changes done, and how they affect your vehicle. In principle VW is responsible and should pay for all

the consequences of their deception, that is, if your vehicle would now have a higher tax because they have more emissions, or has a worse performance, increases fuel consumption, loses power, etc. We strongly recommended to ask the garage that they certify in detail all the works done on the vehicle, just in case any of it may have a future potential negative impact. Likewise, we recommend to review the vehicle sale contract, invoice and prove of payment, and advertising and publicity at the time of purchase, to justify

where appropriate, what conditions they told you the vehicle had when they sold to you. In the event that you do not agree with what VW proposes, or the repair, or loss of performance, you could claim in a civil proceedings for damages, and hypothetically, in some cases, you could ask for the sales contract to be declared null and void, and for the return the money paid for the vehicle. I was having coffee with a lovely new associate at the Javea Golf Course and while enjoying the big koi fish and the variety of turtles that inhabit the pond behind the coffee shop, my companion and I started to ponder about the nature of giving and receiving.

The best theories speculate that it is better to give than to receive; but is this always the case? I am not really sure how these dynamics come into play in an entrepreneurs’ life other than perhaps a person who is raised to be Giver – ends up a Giver, while a spoiled person as a child just gets accustomed to always being a Taker. This is only a theory but perhaps giving and taking are nurtured responses from our family environment or perhaps they are inherent in our nature – or perhaps a entrepreneur can learn to be a giver, while others can learn to accept and receive gracefully? In any case, in building great relationships that will lead to better resources, contacts and personal growth, I believe you have to be both!! A great relationship is mutually beneficial. In business and social life this means connecting with people who can be mentors, who can share information, who can help create other connections; in short, that means going into a relationship

wanting “something”. The person who builds great relationships starts by thinking, “How and what can I give to this other person to help them choose me as a friend?” The wrong way to start a relationship is with, “What can I get out of this relationship?” A prolific entrepreneur sees “giving” as the best way to establish a real relationship and a lasting connection. An entrepreneur approaches building relationships as if it’s all about the other person and not about them, and in the process builds relationships with people who follow the same approach. In conclusion – with the act of giving comes a reciprocal response and something will be given back to you – if the person you are engaging is on the same page as you – and then you can receive their gifts with grace

and appreciation. Remember the old phrase – “What goes around comes around”? I guess that proverb can apply here very well.

LIFE ISN’T easy for the youngsters of the Municipal Girls Orphanage but their hard times in the Broadway hit musical Annie continues to thrill audiences around the globe. When 11-year-old Annie is caught attempting a breakout, the angry Miss Hannigan orders all the girls to give the home a vigorous cleaning. And this brilliant opening scene brings one of the production’s ﬁrst memorable numbers ‘Hard Knock Life’ – the orphan girls singing: “It’s a hard knock life for us, living in an orphanage!” Footlights Theatre Company is performing the musical – based on a comic strip ‘Little Orphan Annie’ – in November. Building raised beds: Part 1 OVER THE past 25 years we have recently had many expats asking about how they could grow things better, or indeed at all in some cases, because they had only shallow poor soil.

OFTEN THIS meant just a few centimetres over bed rock or trying to plant in narrow insufficiently deep holes drilled out with a pneumatic drill or gango hammer. The answer for all was…’You will struggle, it would be more sensible to construct some raised beds for growing herbs fruit trees, flowering plants and vegetable’s. So that is what I will look at this week.. WHAT IS A RAISED BED? In our popular vegetable growing book ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ we defined a raised bed as an elevated area of deep rich soil mix built up within retaining walls’. There are four basic types. A four sided box constructed so that soil can be worked from all sides without walking on it. A three sided box built onto an existing wall. A narrow terrace on a sloping site. A series of raised beds on a sloping site as illustrated.

HOW DEEP SHOULD THE SOIL BE? A minimum height of 30cm will provide a depth of soil suﬃcient for the roots of most vegetable plants and many ﬂowering plants and shrubs. A maximum height of 70 to 80cm would allow the bed to be worked without much bending and also from a stool, chair or wheelchair. The most comfortable height will depend on the height of the person or persons who will be working the raised bed. Deep beds can be used for trees and even palms. Any intermediate heights depending on the materials you have available for building the walls and the amount of good soil/compost/manure available or you are willing to buy in. HOW WIDE AND LONG SHOULD THE BED BE? Width of beds. A maximum width of 1.5m if the layout of your raised bed/beds will allow you to work from both sides. A maximum width of 70 to 80cm

if the raised bed is against a wall or hedge which will only allow it to be worked from one side. If you build raised beds any wider you will need to walk on the soil which will consolidate it and defeat the reason for building the raised beds in the ﬁrst place.

Length of beds. The length of a raised bed can be anything from one metre to twenty metres or more. However it may be more practical to design a layout with several shorter beds with the space between wide enough to accommodate a wheelbarrow or wheelchair.

MADONNA IS known for being a strict disciplinarian, and her team of dancers have probably been reduced dramatically on the back of an incident at the US/Canadian border last week. FOUR LADS from Southend, Essex formed Busted in 2000, had a more or less instant line-up change, dropped to 3 members, then produced 10 singles, 8 of which made the top 3, four of them making No1. All sorts of sillies went on, then in 2013 singer Charlie Wilson passed on being in the band saying he would never return. Life certainly is a Cabaret for Liza WHEN YOU’RE born in Hollywood and your parents are major players in the entertainment business you’re going find it difficult to avoid similar trappings. Liza Minnelli did indeed enter show business, but did so with considerable style, quite some feat when you have an extremely troubled mother and womanising father. Liza got noticed in ´69 movie The Sterile Cuckoo, but reached the very top with her performance as Sally Bowles in Ćabaret´ in 1972 when she quite rightly won the Academy Award for Best Actress. After a fine performance alongside Dudley Moore in Arthur in ´81 Liza gently inched away from making movies and quietly went about her business as a singer and entertainer, and last week boarded her connecting flight from Los Angeles at Charlotte, North Carolina on her way to perform with the North Carolina Symphony at Cape Fear Community College’s in Wilmington a further 200 miles away. The plane took off alright but the turbulence was so bad the pilot decided to fly back to Charlotte. Scary Poos! With the do being a sassy black tie affair she didn’t want to miss, Liza got together with her musical collaborator Cortés Alexander and between them found a driver through the Uber app on his mobile phone, and set off for Wilmington. The Uber app was started in San Francisco in May this year and is basically a mini-cab driver system you can access through your smartphone; cabbies are obviously not best pleased about it. A source informs us “It was a four hour drive in trying road conditions.” The lovely Liza then got a word in saying “He drove all night and got us to our hotel at 6.30am!” Later that day she played to a crowd of 1,500 people and received a standing ovation.

DAVID ROBERT Jones was born in Brixton 68 years ago and the boy has done well for himself. Better known as David Bowie, not only is he a ground breaker in music, but also in the videos he created at a time when the art form was pretty pedestrian, ´Ashes to Ashes´ a personal favourite. He´s back making them again with Sky Atlantic having commissioned him to produce the opener for their new show The Last Panthers. JENNIFER ANNISTON has sadly lost all her street cred after the commercial she’s made for Emirate Airlines. It’s a sorry tale of her waking from a nightmare of ﬂying economy then living the dream of a shower with hot towels and walk-up bar. Cramped leg room, ﬁtting our luggage into a tiny bag, and a snoring neighbour is our personal experience. We’re all happy for you Jen, but I’m not sure your our Friend anymore. My daughter is being overlooked My husband and I split when our child was very young. We have remained on fairly good terms for the sake of our daughter. He remarried and now they have a child. Up until the birth, my daughter was very excited about the new baby. Now, I have noticed that she is being overlooked by my husband‘s mother in law, and all the attention is going on the baby. My daughter now comes home from her visits in tears.

If you are on good terms with you ex, I would suggest a quiet word with him. Tell him diplomatically, exactly what you’ve said here. It’s is not uncommon for a child to be jealous of a new addition to the family. All the attention is naturally going to the baby, but if the mother in law is pushing your daughter out, this needs to be rectified immediately to ensure good future relations. Maybe you could suggest your ex-husband takes his daughter out by himself occasionally, to make her feel special.

Can’t deal with the situation My fiancée called off our marriage a week before the wedding. It was totally out of the blue, and I have been very upset. The house is now on the market. My family and friends tell me that this is for the best, and I know they mean well, but I am having trouble dealing with the situation. You are about to be finally rewarded for something that you deserve, and as somebody not to set any goals you have, however, set a precedent which others will have to follow, and you can finally aspire to in the meantime. Venus opposes Neptune forthwith and it is high time you checked on finances, as money takes a tumble. There have been some unexpected expenses as of late, but above all this is a great time to make a joint decision that will balance the books and bring some future prosperity just when and however it may be needed in the scheme of things. Mercury squares on Pluto and so be prepared for some fairly shocking revelations. Above all the insistence of Pluto brings things to a head quite nicely whilst Mercury opens up previously closed channels of communication so that from now on everybody gets a free share of the truth. Finally fear has been removed and it’s time to move on! The severity of the shift has sent rings around the cycle of the Autumnal moon. You are ready and planning your escape and it is vital for your self survival that the freedom you deserve is yours aplenty! You have given up on mere compromise and have finally realised, the hardest of ways, that in this life, now, you get what you really do need. In hindsight you would never have got involved but since you are you are going to give it whatever you can. You are inspiring in your generosity, your warmth and above all your better judgment. Come what may, you are now in the very best position to be able to negotiate your way through to the success that you so rightly deserve. What comes next is not a dream to you anymore so take the best deal going and this will ensure that you are appreciated. You need to get back to where you were, and that is a journey of the heart and soul. Venus brings love in every aspects and it is time that you loved yourself enough to realise that you are making a rod for your own back if things do not shape up the way that they should. If anybody can rock and roll then you can, and so, save your best for last and be stubborn over something that brings realism, and tunes others into your wavelength!

LIFE IS not always a bowl of cherries. Often just when we need a helping hand it is the time that we don’t get it. Faith in life and in the future in general is the answer that many take up and work around. We all perceive things diﬀerently, and life is such a challenge sometimes. Doris Stoles was my mentor as a teenager, and she always said that what you don’t manage to achieve here on Earth you can have a better chance with when you get to Spirit.

Still, wonderful words that they are, we all accept a challenge during our lives. Things that were a priority when I was young are no longer number one on the list anymore; and my own specific needs have changed many times as I live my life with no regrets and the strong light of hope leading me on. An old gypsy fortune teller once tried to sell me some lucky heather, and she gave me the advice that I have ignored, always. She said it is best never to love but always to hope. Well, love has always been very important to me and I do have the highest esteem for hope and have it right up there on my menu, always. Hope is often challenged and yet if we cling to our beliefs we are anchoring positive energy to our very souls and still out there experiencing life’s journey. In the USA I am constantly being asked by clients who wish to live a life devoid of making any mistakes. There it seems that life particularly revolves around bigger salaries, better lovers and security of employment. Like with a Chinese Doctor you go to see them when you are fully well, and then they are obligated to keep you healthy as long as they can. It works because it works, but we learn from mistakes and accept that life is a challenge that we not only embrace but that we openly enjoy the ups and downs as we take the fast lane from birth struggle through senility to demise. Being steered through something is sometimes the position that we choose to take, like a wet night drive through Central Manhattan in rush hour, I would rather be a passenger than the driver. But what if we never took chances? There are plenty of people who are, “ could’ve would’ve should’ve “ and if you are somehow left on the high ground waiting to say the biggest, “but” then you really are living on the edge of an existence; but you are not a participator in life, and what it must bring you. We all anticipate that the best is out there and that we are entitled to it, but there are vital steps to the possibility of good fortune. If you want to win the lottery then firstly you have to buy a ticket, it’s a simple procedure that rewards those whose lucky numbers do come up. Being very rich in the energy of Spirit I am glad to be rich in something, and I can share this energy with people who I know have need of it. Having a gift means that you can be generous with it, or just what is the point of us having anything. The whole World needs to care and share right now, maybe for better reasons than ever before. We are rapidly becoming more and more mechanistic as Mr. Google knows more than we ever could, and the right format of screen is the open treasure of these days. As for exploration and surprise and motivation they are all crushed in times when entertainment and intrigue are a step away from providing us with all the right answers at the slide of a finger. I would never stand in the way of the future, but as we search for the brave new world we were promised we have to remember that Spirit is always there for us. KENNY, I wasn’t close to my Nan really but now she has passed over I am full of guilt of what could have been, but wasn’t. I switched my phone oﬀ the afternoon she was dying, and missed the call that gave me the call to come to say goodbye to her. Can you make contact with my Nan? Rachel J. Rachel, your Nan is making her journey so it is early days yet to make contact, but you can send her your love and light a candle for her to show her you are supporting her on her way to the Spirit World. Whatever will be will be, and it is perfectly alright to feel the loss of someone that you always thought would be around. Tell Nan that when she gets sorted, in a few months time, you are going to make contact with her. You will always have that chance to talk to her if you need to; even though she now lives on another plane, since love, not guilt makes the best of connections and I will help you.

My picture on Skype is upside down and Skype do not answer my questions, I have upgraded to Windows 10 recently. They say my camera is up to date and working ok, I went into the Asus website and they say the same thing. I don’t need to download new software as the camera is fine. Any suggestions please? Fillet steak with tomato and red wine sauce A TENDER fillet steak is a real treat but it needs a good sauce â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and this one is rich, red and robust. It will take an hour or so to prepare, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s well worth the effort. 2 fillets steaks A knob of butter Half an onion, finely chopped A clove of garlic, chopped 6 cherry tomatoes, quartered A sprig of rosemary A couple of sprigs of thyme A glass of red wine 200ml beef stock A pinch of sugar Black pepper 1. Melt the butter in a small saucepan and gently sweat the onion and garlic until soft. Add the tomatoes and continue to cook gently until they begin to break down. Next, add the rosemary and

thyme with the wine, stock and sugar. Simmer gently for about half an hour. 2. Strain the sauce through a fine sieve and press out all the juices. Return the liquid to a clean pan and continue to simmer for about 20 minutes until you are left with about 6 tblsp of glossy, slightly sticky sauce. 3. Season the steaks with black pepper and grill or fry to your liking. Serve on hot plates with the sauce spooned over and around. Serves: 2 Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour

80 candles on Mary’s cake AVID BAKER Mary Wood celebrates her 80th birthday tomorrow (Saturday) with her grand-daughter making her special birthday cake. by JACK TROUGHTON MARY PUTS skills she gained as a domestic science teacher in her home town of Tamworth to good use on the Costa Blanca as a member of U3A Vall de Pop and Jalon Valley HELP. Mary and husband Eddie – they have been married 37 years – were two of the ﬁrst members of the U3A branch when they signed up nine years ago and she has the membership number ‘11’. Having watched the association grow and volunteering as a member of the ‘meet and greet’ team for general meetings, Mary is also Group Leader for the sugar Craft Group. And at HELP, she usually makes the delicious cakes for the ‘Guess the Weight of the Cake’ competition, a fun fund raiser at many of the charity’s events throughout the year. When Mary gave up teaching in 1979, she and the family moved to Cornwall to won and run a hotel. In 2002 Mary and Eddie moved to Spain, settling in Alcalali. Her daughter Jackie also lives nearby and owns the popular Citrus Bar in Orba – Mary often helps out at the business – and while son Mark still lives in the UK, he has plans to join the family in Spain. Jackie has organised a birthday celebration at the Citrus Bar for family and friends, where everyone will wish her a very happy birthday.

Weathering the storm RAIN FAILED to stop play for Jalon Valley HELP and its popular outdoor afternoon Cream Tea – the event simply moved indoors.

The event was scheduled to take place in the beautiful botanical gardens in Sagra but the heavens opened ahead of the party and everywhere was soaked. The charity’s fundraising team swiftly and smoothly moved into action. The venue was switched indoors to the Pensionista’s Club in Jalon and the party went ahead. By the time guests arrived, the sun was shining again but despite the disappointment at not enjoying an ‘al fresco’ event, everything went well. Cream teas and china crockery made the hall an enjoyable place to be and helpers moved between the kitchen and hall laden with food cooked by volunteers – plates of scones, butter, jam, cream, and sponge cakes – and refilled teapots and milk jugs. Entertainment was provided by Pauline McGough who sang and played guitar for two hours. Pauline was good enough to give her time for free but was rewarded with a cream tea and a bunch of flowers – she also bought some raffle tickets and was lucky enough to win a box of chocolates and a pot plant. HELP President Elaine Horton thanked all the guests and the volunteers for their hard work – and said the afternoon had added more than 600€ to charity funds.

Reflexives:

Gerunds, Infinitives and Imperatives We have spent a few weeks now laying the foundations for understanding reflexive verb, and I did mention the obvious fact early on that whatever applies to the present tense, applies in all the other tenses as well. In other words, just as we can say “me levanto” (I get up) in the present tense, we can also say “me estoy levantando” (I am getting up) “me he levantado” (I have got up), “me levantaba” (I was getting up, or, I used to get up). There are two instances when the particle can be placed in one of two positions. The first case is with the gerund, which can be as in the example above “Me estoy levantando” (with the participle in front of the verbs) or “estoy levantándome” (with the participle tacked onto the gerund) – the two things meaning exactly the same. The same applies to

infinitives of verbs, for example: “Tengo que levantarme” or “Me tengo que levantar” (I have to get up). There is no difference between these two sentences and both forms as used quite commonly. There is just one instance when the particle has to be tacked onto the end of the verb with no alternative, and that is with the imperative (or command) form, for example “¡levántate!” (get up!) Sometimes you do hear a variation of this which is “Qué te levantes” (That you may get up!) but that’s getting a bit advanced as it involves the subjunctive which we haven’t got anywhere near yet in these articles. Once we start realizing all the alternatives of tense, person and word order

the whole subject gets a bit cumbersome to explain, so I’ve decided to change tactic and give you some sentences to play with until next week. You can translate them, of course, and also notice how the reflexives work in each one. Here we go: Me voy a levantar temprano. A mi madre le gusta levantarse a las ocho. Nos vamos a ir mañana. ¿Prefieres ducharte o bañarte en la bañera? Los chicos tienen que irse temprano ¿Os habéis acordado del regalo? Hay que apuntarse pronto ¡Cuídate mucho cariño! ¿No te das cuenta del problema? Yo no quiero irme, me quedo aquí.

by LINDA SWAIN THE GRAIN harvest has been gathered, the fruits giving out their last flush and the earth drawing back into herself all that she needs to nurture her roots and seedlings until the Spring time. Mornings are mist shrouded until the weakening sun manages to burn through. The morning air is scented with something new - it’s the smell of cold - sharp and clean, whilst the evening air carries the unmistakable tang of homely wood smoke. Six bags of fragrant, juicy blackberries are stowed in the freezer, ready for the blackberry and apple crumbles or pies I’ll make for my visitors. There is still one more free gift from Nature to be found. Mushrooms! The joy of wandering the dewy fields first thing and the excitement of finding the little patch of perfect white buttons can only really be appreciated by other obsessive mushroom foragers. Even better is to wander through a pine forest and come across the most precious prize of all, the Cep or Penny Bun. Delicious fat legged, creamy brown capped boletus, sporting a spongy underskirt, rather than the gills of the field mushroom. There is nothing to equal the smell of field mushrooms gently frying in butter. The ceps can be

eaten fresh or sliced thinly, spread out on clean brown paper and dried in a cool place. Mushroom gathering and eating, I should add is not for the amateur. You must know exactly what can and cannot be eaten safely. There are perhaps two or three deadly fungi, many which will cause stomach upsets or other illness, most which will just smell and taste horrible and the few, prized and precious ones which the seasoned forager will recognise and seek out. Now also, it is the season of...the...SPIDER. Why they decide to set up home indoors is a mystery to me. Lennie the tabby has never had so much fun inside before. Yesterday I picked up what I thought was a lump of something fallen off the logs which I’m now bringing in, to find it was a very large, long legged and very dead wolf spider. My neighbours must have heard my scream. Whilst I’m writing this, Lennie is stretched out lengthways with his nose and arm under the sofa trying to hook something. Needless to say, my knees are tucked under my chin. Old Aggie, snuggles most of the time beside the fire and Belladonna, graces the rooftop as a slender silhouette as usual, but she too knows when the fire has been lit and takes her place beside it. Time to mow the grass for (hopefully), the last time this year.

Diverticulosis, Diverticular disease and Diverticulitis Diverticula are small bulges or pockets that develop in the lining of the intestine. Diverticula are common and associated with ageing. The large intestine becomes weaker with age, and the pressure of hard stools passing through the large intestine is thought to cause the bulges to form. It’s estimated that 5% of people have diverticula by the time they are 40 years old, and at least 50% of people have them by the time they are 80 years old. Both sexes are equally affected although the condition is more likely to appear at a younger age (under 50) in men than in women. Overall, symptoms of diverticulitis are most likely to occur in people over 70 years old. The majority of people with diverticula will not have any symptoms. This is known as Diverticulosis. Only 1 in 4 will develop symptoms and the condition is then known as Diverticular disease. Symptoms include: lower abdominal pain feeling bloated Diverticular disease is often described as a “Western disease” because the rates are high in European and North American countries, and low in African and Asian countries. A combination of genetics and diet is thought to be the reason for this and the fact that people in Western countries tend to eat less fibre. Consequently a high fibre diet will be recommended and

paracetamol can be used to relieve pain. Most people with diverticular disease are recommended to eat between 18g (0.6oz) and 30g (1oz) of fibre a day. Good sources of fibre include: fresh fruit – such as pears, apples and oranges dried fruit – such as apricots and prunes vegetables – such as broccoli and peas legumes – such as baked beans, kidney beans and black beans nuts – such as almonds and peanuts breakfast cereals – such as high-fibre breakfast flakes starchy foods – such as brown bread, rice and pasta It is recommended to gradually introduce / increase a high fibre diet in order to reduce the side effects of bloating and wind. Drinking lots of water also helps. If these pockets become inflamed or infected this is known as Diverticulitis. Diverticulitis describes infection that occurs when bacteria becomes trapped inside one of the bulges, triggering more symptoms. If untreated diverticulitis can lead to complications, such as an abscess next to the intestine. Symptoms of diverticulitis tend to be more serious and include:

more severe abdominal pain, especially on the left side high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or above diarrhoea or frequent bowel movements Mild diverticulitis can usually be treated at home antibiotics prescribed by your GP. More serious cases may need hospital treatment to prevent and treat complications. Surgery to remove the affected section of the intestine is sometimes recommended if there have been serious complications, although this is rare.

Journey to fitness Part 4: Women & weight training

My journey to the Pure Elite finals would not be possible without weight training and I mean heavy weights. by SALLY NOLAN I so often hear women say that they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to lift weights because they are nervous of getting big and bulky. It is physiologically impossible as a woman to put on large amounts of muscle mass due to our hormonal make up. However, if you are looking for a firm and tight physique you will need to lift heavier weights. Of course you should build up to heavier weights and always train catering for injuries and postural misalignments. Over time you will get stronger and be able to increase the weights. I have doubled the weights I was lifting last year and do I look bulky and

manly? To the contrary I receive frequent compliments on my physique. I have seen a huge change in my body over the last year which I put down to a sensible training programme. I do a combination of heavy weight training, cardiovascular exercise and Pilates. The weight training builds up my muscle mass which gives me the firm strong body I desire and helps to increase my metabolism. The cardiovascular exercise helps keep my heart and lungs healthy and also burns fat and boosts my metabolism. The Pilates keeps my core strong, corrects my postural imbalances and improves my flexibility and range of movement. All this com-

bined with a healthy diet and plenty of rest and sleep has helped me to get into the best shape of my life - not bad at 48 years old. So ladies, put down the little pink dumb bells and pick up something a little heavier! Free Movies in Santa Lucía

FOR MANY of us, the name “Santa Lucía” means the new Cartagena hospital, but, in fact, Santa Lucía is the name of the whole suburb on the outskirts of which the hospital was built. by IAN ASKEW

The suburb of Santa Lucía will host a series of films about the sea until December 19th. The showings, all free, will take place every Saturday at the Residents´ Association Centre at 8pm. Santa Lucía is Cartagena´s popular fishing district, and has just launched a new film series, where all the movies have a common theme, the sea. The cycle of movies has been organized by the Association “Somos Santa Lucía - We are St. Lucía”, which brings together various groups, social partners and organizations working in the neighborhood. The films due to be screened are: “Los robinsones de los mares del sur – Swiss Family Robinson” (17th October); “Misterio en el barco perdido – The Wreck of The Mary Deare” (24th October); “La luz del fin del

PADDLE POWER a-plenty will be needed when Dave and Mitch Bull take to the River Segura on Saturday, 28th November. The boys are rowing 52 kilometres (around 32 miles) from Murcia City to Guardamar de Segura in their kayaks to raise funds for Maria and the Pink Ladies on behalf of the Spanish cancer charity AECC, and raise awareness of the work of the Samaritans in Spain. Both causes are close to their hearts, since Dave is the patron of Samaritans in Spain, and a member of their immediate family has recently been diagnosed with cancer. Dave has been kayaking since he was a gangling, spotty youth at secondary school, so he knows it’s not just a case of getting in there and waving a paddle around. It’s a test of stamina, strength and endurance, and the only way the boys are going to see through the challenge, and hopefully raise at least 5,000€ for AECC, is to pack on muscle and build core strength. They’ll be sitting in the kayaks with legs stretched out, so there’s going to be a lot of pressure on the abdominal and upper body muscles. That’s where the real power will come from on the day, so they need to be physically and mentally prepared for the challenge. Uruguayan personal trainer Bea Cota, who is based in Gran Alacant, has devised a 13 week training and nutrition programme for Dave and Mitch, and she’s spending a lot of time with the lads and pushing them to their limits. Just as they feel like they’re coping, she smiles, congratulates them – and steps it up a

notch or two. There’s a rumour going around that she’s now known as the Smiling Assassin in Gran Alacant, and Dave probably started it! It’s certainly a punishing schedule. On Mondays, there’s a 5 kilometre run, followed by sit-ups, press ups and squats. On Wednesdays, there’s weight training, and Friday means balance training. Cue giggles from Bea and guffaws from Dave or Mitch, depending on who has just fallen off the balance ball! It may be the source of the most hilarity, but the balance training is important if the Bulls are going to stay afloat in their boats on the day. Everything Bea puts them through has a purpose – other than the obvious one of making grown men suffer, that is! As if Bea’s Body Blitz wasn’t enough for flesh and blood to endure, the boys go kayaking, cycling, walking and running in between the training sessions. Or should that be torture sessions? It certainly sounds like a punishing schedule, but Dave and Mitch know that if they’re to complete the Kayak Challenge successfully, they need to be in the best shape possible. It seems to be working too – the boys have gained 3 kilos of muscle each, and are feeling stronger and fitter as each week goes by. The Kayak Challenge will start at 8.00am from Murcia City, and the boys will rest, talk to spectators and collect donations along the way. They’ll be calling at El Raal, Orihuela, Benejuzar, Algorfa, Formentera and Rojales, before arriving at Guardamar at approximately 6.00 pm. ON MONDAY 5th October, The Playa Flamenca Walking Football Team celebrated their 1st year Anniversary, with a fantastic meal, and what a year it has been, with 2 competitions, an away Tour to Benidorm, and a cruise arranged by the lively social group with other social activities, and are followed to every game and ﬁxture by their very own WAGS. The Walking Wanders play every Monday at Playa Flamenca Sports Centre and kick oﬀ is at 4pm. All members are over the age of 55 years of age and after the game they continue to a very social bar. Concert success for church THE COSTA Blanca Male Voice Choir was in fine voice to make a memorable start to its new season of concerts – with a performance in aid of the Anglican Chaplaincy raising 2,100 Euros. by JACK TROUGHTON THE SALON de Actos at Teulada Town Hall was filled with an audience of over 150 who enjoyed a full choir repertoire of material including favourites like ‘You Raise Me Up’ and ‘Amen’. The concert also featured solo performances from the choir’s musical director Claire Harkness-Post, a talented soprano, and tenor Gordon Atkinson. The audience was also treated to a piece from choir pianist Heather butcher and the evening finished with an encore of the South African chant ‘Senzinina’. The choir is already in rehearsals for its two flagship Christmas concerts in Javea on 10th December and Benitachell on 16th December. Downhill charity bike ride GIVING4GIVING and Doggie Angells have organised a very exciting charity day for Sunday 1st November which includes a sponsored downhill bike ride, lunch and an afternoon of fun for all the family. by JEANETTE RICE THE DAY will start at 11am with cyclist meeting at the Font de Moli in Finestrat for a gentle 15km downhill ride through the beautiful countryside. Participants can either bring their own bikes or use the ones kindly being loaned by “Benidorm Downhill Bike Ride”. However there is limited availability of these bikes and so reservation is a must. There is no age limit for the ride so families are welcome young and old to enjoy the exhilarating feeling of the air rushing through the hair as you gently wind your way down the route. This is followed by a menu del dia, scheduled for around 1pm and costing just 12 euros with the afternoon continuing with a raﬄe, auction and live entertainment at the popular Moli Dos bar and restaurant in Finestrat.

The cancer support and animal rescue charities do amazing work and have received consistent support from the local community and are hoping that as many turn out for this fun day as is possible to continue with that support. THERE IS a common thread in literature, art and design. That is that ideas are borrowed and then reinvented, sculpted into a new and unique oﬀering.

Artists are a good example of this. Take Robert E. Wells and David Farren, for instance. They both paint landscapes,

cityscapes and street scenes in a similar impressionistic style. Their work draws inspiration from the great French painters like Monet and Renoir, who introduced this approach in the 19th Century. Clearly, the actress Felicity Kendal appreciates this style because pictures by both Wells and Farren can be found in her private collection. So it goes to show that just because that genre already existed it is perfectly acceptable to revisit and craft it into something equally, if not, more appealing. This approach is popular in car design, too. Look at the side of the new Kia Picanto, city car. What do you see? It’s an Alfa Romeo, surely. The whole design reminds me of the Alfa 147. Chrome door handles favoured by the Italian manufacturer further add to this opinion. As with my thoughts about art, this is no bad thing. The Alfa 147 was an attractive little car but it was a temperamental Italian. It was calling out to be rediscovered and enhanced. This observation goes to show how far Kia has come in the space of a decade. Consider that this Korean car maker produced the bland and characterless Kia Pride between 1986 and 2000 with hardly a change in its styling (if you

can call it that) during that long period and it is surprising and welcoming to see the change that has taken place. The tiny Picanto is up against tough competition from the Smart Car and the Renault Twingo. In this sector though, it’s all about the money and Kia blows the competition away with its OTR price, which includes air conditioning, electrically operated windows and wing mirrors as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. The piece de resistance is a seven year 100,000 mile warranty: you only get four years with a more expensive Renault. An attractive vehicle, the Picanto is sure to melt even the coldest heart. Distinctive alloy wheels, again reminiscent of designs favoured by Alfa Romeo, set it off, adding to the sense that there is something a little different about this car. Alfas have always liked their juice and so Kia drivers will be pleased to know that not only can they enjoy its attractive looks but the Picanto returns around 50mpg. Its five speed manual gearbox is pleasant enough and the one litre engine doesn’t complain when driven hard, which is necessary if a decent pace is required. All clothing in the Calpe shop is marked at half price from Monday 19th October to Thursday 29th October – before the shop closes until Monday 2nd November to restock with winter items. Since first opening in December 4014, the shop has been an important income stream for the charity and its community projects and has raised over 30,000€. Every month, the Lions donate 250€ to Caritas in Calpe, 250€ in Benissa, and another 250€ to Calpe Ayuda. The club also contributes to the Gargasindi School and Red Cross in Calpe and EMAUS in Benissa – and supports other organisations with ‘one-off’ donations. The Lions is a community support charity and members enjoy a busy social life as well as gaining the satisfaction of a job well done. Calpe and Benissa lions are now looking to recruit new faces – anyone interested is invited to attend a meeting to see what the club offers. Photography exhibition KEEN PHOTOGRAPHERS from U3A Teulada-Moraira will see over 150 of their pictures go on display from Monday 19th October for two weeks. The association’s Photo Group is staging a two week exhibition in the Art Hall, La Senieta, Moraira, until 8pm on Saturday 31st October. More than 150 photographs by 17 members of the group will be arranged in themed presentations. In addition, some 70 pictures will be on display from a collaboration between the group, Elizabeth Wickstead, and the town hall’s Culture Centre. This involves 35 photographs of Teulada and Moraira recaptured with modern day equivalent views aimed at showing the many changes to the vistas of the area over the last 50 years. This section of the display will move to the Culture Centre in Teulada for semi-permanent display after the exhibition. The photographs can be viewed during the normal opening hours of La Senieta and everyone is invited to enjoy the pictures.

Benitachell Bowls Club After a long hot summer, it was back to League duty for our

Winter League squad, as they kicked off the new season in style with an excellent victory over a strong visiting Emerald Isle side.

Winning on 4 of the 5 rinks, with an overall positive shot difference of 27, the BBC side ran out worthy winners with a 10 points to 2 score-line. Our Berleen team also had an excellent start to their League campaign, securing 2 points with a 19 – 12 victory. The picture captures the successful BBC squad, prior to Wednesday’s first home game of the season. BBC JAGUARS V BBC TIGERS The two club rivals came together in the

Jaguars opening match and was nip and tuck with the Jaguars winning on two and a draw with a two shot difference to take a 7-3 victory. The Jaguars also won the Challenger League match. BBC LIONS VERSUS THE TIGERS The BBC Lions opened their resumed match and the first of their CBBA Northern League Title games against their Club rivals the Tigers, attempting to collect their 8th CBBA league title in a row. Always a tricky one to start the season, this year saw the Tigers take 8 points and

shot difference of 10. The Lions Challenger League won their match 17-12. BBC SATURDAY WINTER RINKS The BBC Bowls Committee are inviting entries for the very popular Saturday Winter Rinks Competition, which had to close early last year being over-subscribed. Early entries are advised.

Rugby La Vila LAST WEEKEND there were no rugby games at Villajoyosa Rugby Stadium. The first team keep training very hard and enjoying watching Rugby World Cup games on TV.

Now he is back at La Vila. His brother Guillem was playing for Akra Alicante. Now he join his brother at La Vila. Mini Rugby section are already starting training. Under 6 to Under 12,Tuesday and Thursdays at 5.45pm. Under 14 to Under 18 and Womens rugby are already training Wednesdays and Fridays at 6.30 pm. The club also run a second team, not so strong as the first team, to play at Alicante level, not long journeys, only local, Denia, Alicante, Elche, Torrevieja. Alfaz Fantasy Football League AS THE Premier League takes a break thanks to a successful International weekend (unless you are a Scotland Fan),we can have a look at who has impressed so far in the Alfaz Fantasy Football League.

Phil’s Team Flixton Sunshiners started the season at the top but for only one week, then Angie’s Blues took over for the next four weeks before Booker Boys replaced them. Gary’s Team Blue Moon F.C. knocked the Booker Boys off the summit and are now the present Leaders. So in eight weeks we have had four different teams leading the Fantasy League. Angie’s Blues have led from the front since the start of the season in our Mark Carter Ladies Section but at the moment they are coming under pressure from Maxine’s Team Plaistow13Hammers who have shot up the League and are now only 2 points behind in 2nd place. Former winner of the Fantasy League Jin’s Dream Team are nicely placed in 3rd spot. There has been plenty of competition for the top spot of our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League as no fewer than 5 different teams have held on to the summit. The present leaders, Super Rhys who won this Section last season, have opened up a 22 point gap over Nathan’s Tyran-

nosuarez -Rex. Down at the bottom of this section Bradley’s Team Hero to Zero have been rooted there for the last five weeks and don’t look like moving. Our Leonard Knowles Construction Golden Boot League has been mainly dominated by Dave’s Team, The Podencos, who ruled for four weeks but they have now given way to the inform Maxine’s Plaistow13Hammers. The highest score so far has been struck by Angie’s Blues who rattled in 102 points in the second week while at the opposite end of the scale the lowest score has been made by Anne’s Team Bolton Wanderers who on the first week of the season scored an unbelievable minus 10. I can’t see any of those scores being beaten. City Team Mates Vardy & Mahrez both on 35 points. With almost a quarter of the season gone, the Alfaz Fantasy League is shaping up to be the most open and exciting for years. Our RTN K.O. Cup Competition 1st Round took place the other week and out of the 128 Cup Ties, 23 of our Ladies Teams made it through to the next round along with 13 of our Junior Managers. Two ties were drawn between Parkwigganers(37) and Cisne Spurs City(37) while the Bentley Boys and The Bairns had a high scoring draw with 46 points each. The Replays take place this week. Last season’s winners of this competition, Pam’s People, were knocked out by Who Ate all Depays Tom by 13-5.The present Leaders of the Fantasy League Gary’s Blue Moon F.C. made it through at the expense of Rosado Rovers by 44-29. Bottom of the League Lyn’s Handbreak City were unlucky to get knocked out by former Leaders Booker Boys by a very narrow defeat by 11-10. Formula 1 returned to the Black Sea resort of Sochi for the Russian Grand Prix last weekend with differing returns for the teams, and more incidents, and high speed accidents, than the opening of a James Bond film. by ALAN PALMER Mercedes, as usual, were predominant in Qualifying with Nico Rosberg edging out Lewis Hamilton for pole when Lewis made a slight error on his last flying lap, next came the Williams of Valterri Bottas, then the Ferraris, the Force India duo, having an excellent weekend, Grosjean’s Lotus and Vestappen’s Torro Rosso. Fernando Alonso, starting his 250th GP, managed 16th in his Maclaren, but at least dispelled recent rumours by confirming he will be driving for the team in 2016 & 2017. Felipe Massa in the other Williams was 15th, and Jenson Button took 13th spot on the grid, in the other Maclaren. Carlos Sainz Jnr, son of Spain’s world famous rally driver, did not record a time, following a massive high speed accident in practice, which saw him buried under the impact-absorbing safety blocks at Turn 13, and

the marshals had to dismantle them to get him out of the car.Delighted to report that following a trip to hospital he was discharged and pronounced fit to drive in the race on Sunday. Come Sunday, the lights went out and Nico and Lewis flew off the line, but unlike Japan two weeks ago Nico was not going to muscled out of his lead, despite forceful attacks from Lewis into both Turns 2&4. Behind them it was a different picture as Nico Hulkenberg spun his Force India at Turn 2, giving Marcus Ericsson’s Sauber nowhere to go but over his car, and Max Vestappen’s Torro Rosso got caught in the mayhem, picking up a puncture resulting in a long, slow ride back to the pits for a tyre change. The resulting safety car slowed everything down for a bit, but when the green flags were waved, it was obvious that all was not well with Rosberg, as Lewis, and then Bottas soon

Pego Golf Society “pairs better ball” competition”

On a very dull and overcast morning 49 players and guests attended this excellent competition. With the weather forecast showing 100% chance of rain all 49 players and guests got round Oliva Nova Golf Club, with hardly a drop of rain. However after they all arrived at the clubhouse after their game, the heavens opened for the rest of the afternoon. Today we had six guests, and they were John Patton, Phil Darren, Kieran McLauglin, John and Susie Snelling and Richard Morris. With all guests playing in the main competition, there was no guest prize this week. The course is continuing to improve every week, and in a couple of weeks should be back to perfect. In the main “Pairs Better Ball” competition the winners were as follows:Division 1 Winners 1st Place Steve Devine and Angus Muir with 42 Points 2nd Place Brendan Young and Bill Sykes with 41 Points 3rd Place Martin Gates and Steve Legg with 41 Points 4th Place Shaun O’Gorman and Paul Singh with 40 Points Great golf by all winners today, and very tight at the top. Good to see Angus Muir back in form !!! There were four 2’s today from Shaun O’Gorman, Tony Jermain, Mike Cuerden and Kieran McLauglin. “Balls in the Water” today was won by John Nicol with 123 balls, so a good kitty for John as it was a “Roll Over” from the previous week. We have a competition for “Nearest The Pin” at hole No 5, and two weeks ago it was won by Martin Gates with 1.13 meters, last week it was won by Martin again with 0.55cms, and this week, yes you have got it, was won for a third time by Martin with his worst shot of the three at 1.15 meters. Great golf especially as it is a Par 4. Nearest the pin at Hole No 16 Par 3, was Shaun O’Gorman. Kimi was later dropped to eighth with a time penalty for causing a collision, which, incidently, meant that Mercedes secured the Constructors Championship, from Ferrari, with four races to go. Next stop Austin, Texas, for the American GP. Meanwhile in Montegi, Japan, Honda were having more success on two wheels, as Spanish star Dani Pedrosa, preserving his tyres on a drying track, got past both multi world champions Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo to land the Japenese MotoGP. His team mate Marc Marquez, riding with a broken hand was fourth, Andrea Dovizioso fifth for Ducatti, but British interest was hightened with Cal Crutchlow picking up 6th for LCR Honda, and Bradley Smith 7th for Tech3 Yamaha, basically the works B teams, and Scott Redding came in tenth.

Torrevieja’s two new signings BREAKING NEWS just before we went to press was that CD Torrevieja has signed two very experienced players to their squad. Paul Squires from the Merseyside Socios of Torrevieja said of the first signing of Ruben Suarez, that at 36 years old, what Suarez lacks in youth, he more than makes up for in experience. A product of Sporting Gijon’s youth academy, he played for Sporting B, Sporting and then Elche before signing for Levante in 2008. In his first two seasons he finished as their top scorer, eventually making 127 appearances and scoring 37 goals during which time he helped get them promoted to La Liga. In 2011/2012, his final season with Levante, he played for less than 1,000 minutes but still managed to score 8 goals, helping them to a 6th place finish and their first ever qualification for the Europa League. He was voted by Golsmedia the Best Midfielder and the Best Player of Group 6 last season. Javi Selvas is the second player announced to have signed for Torrevieja. Javi Selvas also was an integral part of Castellon’s Championship winning side of last season. He made a total of 29 appearances (22 league and 7 cup) scoring 3 goals. In July of this year he renewed his contract with Castellon but after playing just 1 league game (out of a possible 6) and 2 cup games, he was released from his contract on September 21st. The coach cited the reason being that he needed to free up room and finances to bring in a new striker after his current forwards were hit with injuries. Social media lit up upon the announcement of these signings and not just from Torry fans but Castellon fans were up in arms that two players of the quality of Suarez and Selvas had been allowed to leave them to sign for a rival club. The general belief was that with these two on board, if they can remain injury free, Torrevieja should be well on course for the Playoffs come the end of the season. And as coincidence should have it, Torrevieja’s next home game on October 25th at 5.00pm is against Castellon, so along with TKO Teddy, it should be a game to remember.

England verses Spain November 13th

IT MAY be only a friendly, but the fact that some of Europe’s best footballers will be playing in Alicante next month is certainly creating a lot of interest among football fans in the region.

On Wednesday, the vice president and deputy of Tourism, Eduardo Dolon, confirmed that the Spanish national coach Vicente del Bosque will be in Alicante next Monday, October 19th, to meet with the president of the Provincial Council of Alicante, Cesar Sanchez, for the official presentation of the Spain verses England football match. This will be held on November 13th at the Rico Perez Stadium. Eduardo Dolon held his own meeting on Wednesday with the President of Hercules, Carlos Parodi, and members of the club’s board, which was the first working meeting before the event. The provincial head of the Costa Blanca Tourist Board also stated that promotional activities are to be explored to leverage the impact of this special game, with the

primary market force being UK residents living or holidaying in the Alicante region. “This is a major sporting event, as once more the province has been able to attract a special event that is especially attractive for the British market. In this sense, we are working on this a special promotion of the forthcoming World Travel Market,” said Eduardo Dolon. Dolon added.; “I am pleased to announce that Vicente del Bosque will also be in the party of the Spanish selection in Alicante.” The technical visit of the Delegation of Alicante will take place on Monday along with the Provincial president César Sánchez, to officially announce the Spain against England match. With both Spain and England winning their somewhat easy European groups, the match between the present European champions and World Cup winners from 2010 has considerable appeal even in a friendly match. Drawn in Group E with Switzerland, Estonia, Lithuania and San Marino, the England team became the first selection to gain a place in the finals with the exception of France, the host. The squad, led by Roy Hodgson, was ranked first in its group and qualified with three games to play, after beating San Marino (0-6) on 5 September. The game against England will be the eighth

disputed by the Spanish national team in the Rico Perez, where they are unbeaten and only yielded a draw once, with their first visit to Alicante when they played a one-all draw with Hungary in March 1977. After Hungary, Spain played three friendlies in the Rico Perez against Finland, Czechoslovakia and Chile, and then against Malta and Liechtenstein in qualifying for the World Championships in Korea and France. The last meeting of the national team in Alicante dates back to October 11th, 2011, when they faced and defeated Scotland (3:1) for the qualifiers of Euro 2012.
