THE ASOCIACION Benefica de Teulada and its 26 years of service to the community were marked on Wednesday with a special ceremony at the town hall.

The association, less formerly the Teulada Charity Shop, has raised and donated hundreds of thousands of Euros – and earlier millions of pesetas – in support of good causes. And the town hall threw a party to pay tribute to the charity’s team of volunteers for their hard work and a special ceremony was attended by British Vice Consul Elizabeth Bell, Teulada’s Mayor Carlos Linares and Councillor for Voluntary Services Laura Hillstead.

The charity’s President Pat Bramah was pre-

sented with a certificate from the town hall by the mayor – and a surprise silver plaque

by Afa Alzheimer. The association started supporting the centre last year when it marked quarter of a century of fund raising. The charity shop first opened its doors in 1989 as the Red Cross Shop – supporting the local ‘Cruz Roja’ and helped purchase ambulances and equipment, a car, and regular payments to the Red Cross Station on the N332. However, the collaboration ended in 2009.

Hotel staff laid off

HOTELS, PARTICULARLY in Benidorm are beginning to feel the pinch from the delay in the governments Imserso scheme for the pensioner community.

Imserso is the agency for the Government of Spain that manages the programme of services for older people including their breaks away in local hotels. The delay has already led to temporary unemployment of over 200 hotel staff with another 750 jobs under threat and four hotels that spe-

cialise in catering for the Imserso clients have been forced to announce temporary closure until the situation improves.

The Cabana, Olympus, Alone and Athena hotels have been forced to temporarily lay off their staff whilst the companies who are tasked with supplying the pensioners with their breaks clarify their terms and conditions with the government.

Francisco Ruiz, who is the Secretary of Institutional Relations for the UGT, said that the figures “related to those

on permanent contracts and does not include those who were maybe due for a renewal of contracts, therefore the figures might be even higher.”

Snr Ruiz said “if things continue as they are now, with the delay in the Imserso, at least another fifteen hotels will suffer the same as fate as the four already suffering.”

One hotel worker said “these companies are playing with the lives of many single families, I myself have been laid off and do not know when I can get back to work.”

WORKER DIES IN BENIDORM

A 54 year old Spanish man has died whilst fitting an awning on the 12th floor apartment in Benidorm.

The Spanish local was working for a small toldos company and was working on an awning at the apartment in Calle Sierra Dorada on Tuesday at around 11am when the accident happened. The deceased was working with two colleagues and as they were dismantling the awning the man fell through an opening and landed on the communal area of the residential complex. An accident investigation is currently under way to try and discover the chain of events leading up to the fatality and if legal proceeding are required.

Child pornography arrests

by JEANETTE RICE MORE THAN 300 agents from Spain’s judicial police performed multiple raids throughout the country in a crackdown on internet child pornography.

Police made 81 arrests, two of whom were minors, as they swept across the country on their raids. The two minors who are mentally disabled along with the 79 other males arrested were in possession of thousands of images and videos which included some “extremely harsh” content of minors being abused.

In addition to the thousands of images, investigators seized computer and video cameras.

In total, 80 homes were searched and police confiscated 96 hard drives, 58 computers, 68 flash drives, four tablets, 195 CDs and DVDs, 18 mobile phones, 25 memory cards, among other pieces of electronics.

A police spokesperson said that they anticipated more arrests would follow.

BRITISH ARRESTED AT GIBRALTAR BORDER

TWO BRITISH nationals were arrested following custom officers becoming suspicious at the Gibraltar border with Spain on Sunday evening.

The officers noticed that the driver of the car was behaving erratically and looked nervous and so followed the vehicle which then jumped two sets of traffic lights, having noticed that it was being followed by a customs car.

The car, which was in the loop area of the border was stopped and the driver along with the passenger were cautioned as officers began to search the vehicle. Officers discovered 350 cartons of cigarettes concealed in the boot area, the engine compartments and other small spaces in the car with a total retail value of £7,000. The two British nationals were 20 and 39 years old and have been released on bail until 28th December.

Sierra Nevada rescues THE GUARDIA Civil rescued four children and six adults from the Sierra Nevada in Granada on Monday.

Late on Sunday evening four children, aged between five and twelve, and six adults became trapped as rescue teams worked through the night to finally reach safe ground in the early hours of Monday morning.

Heavy rain meant that the rescue team struggled to reach the group which had left early on Sunday for a hike and had lost their bearings when the sun began to set.

The Guardia Civil Mountain Rescue team found the group and quickly helped to warm up the children before carrying them down the mountain on their shoulders as the adults were assisted with their descent using ropes.

Fortunately no one was injured and the hikers were returned to the area where they had parked their vehicles.

Controversial changes to the curriculum pupils in Sevilla learning to bullfight

THE SPANISH education department has drawn up plans to add bullfighting to the curriculum in state school, causing public outrage.

Pupils in Spanish state schools may soon be able to choose bullfighting as one of their optional subjects following an announcement from the education ministry this week.

In what is quickly becoming a political scrabble for votes with the upcoming elections in December the ruling conservative government is defending their decision to add this to the curriculum citing it as a logical extension to the subjects as it’s importance within Spanish society.

The professional training certificate will be offered to those students who are over sixteen and have moved into vocational studies.

Called “tauromachy – bullfighting and auxiliary livestock activities” the pupils will be given the chance to learn the skills

involved, the rules and regulations as well as breeding fighting bulls.

The course, which will run for two years with students studying full time, is set to be offered around the country however opposition parties have already spoken out about the plans particularly in Catalonia and the Canary Islands where the practice of bullfighting is illegal with Valencia and the Balearic Islands considering following suit.

Spain’s leading animal rights organisation, Pacma, have said that the proposal is outrageous with Silvia Barquero, the leader of the organisation saying “this is because the general elections are soon to be held and the government knows that there is mounting pressure against bullfighting, they are trying to rush a change in schools to teach how to torture an animal to death.”

A spokesperson for the ministry said “tauromachy is an artistic practice which is traditional and cultural for the Spanish.”

Mobility scooter days are numbered

by JEANETTE RICE THE MISUSE of mobility scooters in Benidorm may finally be ending as the council lay down the law.

Councillor for Mobility, Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate announced on Wednesday that his department will proceed with the closure of any business or establishment that does not comply with the regional laws regulating the rental of motor propelled chairs.

Snr Zarate made the announcement having acknowledged that the misuse of the vehicles had caused “numerous violations and accidents often by people with no disability or reduced mobility.”

In a statement the councillor said that the town hall had contacted eight businesses who have until 2nd November to submit documentation to prove their rentals have complied with the regulations of hire.

The companies are required to provide a copy of why the scooters were rented under medical devices regulated under the Royal Decree 250/2004 of the Generalitat Valencia.

LA NUCIA FATALITY A 63 year old woman has died following an accident in the town of La Nucia.

Snr Zarate is emphatic that if the companies do not have the relevant papers the next step will be to close the businesses which he says seem to have rented out the mobility scooters for profit not for medical usage.

Benidorm has long become renowned for its use of mobility scooters as a cheaper option to catching taxis and the council have promised in the past to enforce the regulations with minimal

affect, however, this will be the first time that the council has spoken so emphatically about the issues.

Snr Zarate said “the sector’s activity does not comply with the regulations and has been disastrous for the image of the town, in some cases making the headlines of foreign newspapers.

We will be very tough and strict and insist that all the companies comply with the regulations.”

The accident occurred on Saturday at 6.30pm as the woman was crossing the road in the town, having been to her local supermarket.

The car was travelling along the CV-70, which runs from Benidorm through La Nucia town, when it knocked the woman down.

Emergency teams attended the accident but unfortunately the 63 year old victim died at the scene.

The Guardia Civil has begun an investigation into the cause of the accident as figures were released for the Valencia region recording a total of 73 fatalities in traffic accidents, 17 less than in the same period of 2014, when there were 90 deaths on the roads, although within a week the figure has risen to 75, with the La Nucia accident and another in the region.

Police raid sets nine women free POLICE IN Marbella raided a house following a call from one of the captives to a free hotline number.

The shocking discovery was made following one of the women getting access to a phone and calling the 900 105 090 number which is specifically manned with experts to help deal with people trafficking.

The woman told the agent on the phone “I’m being sexually exploited” and gave the address of where the house was located.

The officers discovered nine women being held in squalid conditions who were only allowed out when it was time to entertain the clients.

The victims had been lured to Spain with the promise of work via internet sites and only once they had arrived did it become apparent that they would be forced into prostitution.

The women were taken to safety and three men were immediately arrested as officers seized mobile phones, computer equipment, high-end vehicles, 3,205€ in cash and documents allegedly related to their crimes.

In the house there was a well-hidden safe which could only be accessed through a sophisticated system of openings hidden behind a mirror.

The free telephone number 900 105 090 and email address trata@policía.es have been put in place so that people can call anonymously and in confidence for anything relating to human trafficking.

Expat fails to make singing final EXPAT SINGER Elisha Lang, just 12 years old, left the popular Spanish talent show “La Voz Kids” at the weekend amidst rumours that it was because she was not Spanish.

Elisha, who lives in Gibraltar, performed the Power of Love with her tearful parents watching but she failed to wow the judges in what was the semi final.

Speaking after the show Elisha said ““I love singing and I’ve been doing it since I was very young, I definitely want to be a professional singer when I’m older.”

Following her performance social media in Spain and Gibraltar buzzed about the talented youngster and when the results were announced many called into question why she had been rejected.

Elisha was born in the UK and shortly afterwards moved to Gibraltar with her family and attends the Westside School. During the show Elisha said that she came from Cadiz not Gibraltar for fear of being discriminated against. It has been suggested that her links with Gibraltar may have affected the judges decision.

Elisha’s father said “I am so proud of my daughter, it should be about her voice not where she is from.”

Elisha fought off an incredible 20,000 applicants to make the last 15 contestants in the show.

OVER THE last 13 years – earlier figures are not available – the charity shop had donated a total of 128,841€.

In September that year, the association formed “an alliance” with the Civil Protection and social services to set up a new ambulance service under the umbrella of the town hall. In March 2012 a formal agreement was signed and the ambulance delivered.

EMERGENCY The vehicle has since become “indispensible” and a second ‘second hand’ ambulance should arrive in December freeing the original to deal with emergency calls.

Last year, it was agreed to donate 1,500€ to APASA to build kennels – a thank-you for the help and support of Mandy and Mike Conway; Mandy is President of the animal charity.

It was also unanimously agreed to support the Alzheimer’s centre in Teulada.

A closely guarded secret, a cheque to buy a much-needed new minibus was presented in August.

Since collaborating with the Civil Protection and Afa Alzheimer, donations have totalled 75,934€ - 55,434€ and 20,500€ respectively.

And speaking at the ceremony, President Pat Bramah said: “The association is manned by volunteers, giving their time freely and willingly in support of our chosen charities,

Alicante’s million trees THE ALICANTE Provincial Government made a commitment to Brussels last week to plant one million trees throughout the province over the last decade.

Alicante President Cesar Sanchez headed the delegation from Alicante at the ceremony of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate Change at the Brussels Parliament. César Sánchez, said that the Provincial Government is committed to plant one million trees in the province over the next decade in order to prevent the emission of an average of 500,000 tons of CO2 in the territory. The objectives of this forum are to reduce its CO2 emissions by 2030 by 40%, in addition to continuing its efforts to encourage and promote the efficiency and energy saving. The province leads the European level with the

number of accessions to the Covenant, in addition to compliance with environmental commitments. Also, Cesar Sanchez announced that “our commitment to the environment, to the territory, is to leave a better world for future generations, and is one of the landmarks of this term.

Cesar Sanchez insisted that “the Council seeks to join the UN goals for Sustainable Development, to take urgent steps to combat climate change initiatives to promote sustainable use of ecosystems, sort zones and green areas and protect Biological diversity in our province. “ In this area, the leader of the Provincial Government has advanced talks with the Council to participate next December in the twenty-first Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change for “Paris 2015”, to achieve a new inter-

national climate agreement, applicable to all countries.

The goal is to keep global warming below 2 ° C. Holiday nightmare for British grandmother

A FAMILY have appealed for help to fly home 57 year old grandmother Angela Noriega, who has been in a diabetic coma at the Marina Baixa Hospital.

The 57 year old diabetic had travelled to Benidorm with a few friends and suffered a hypo attack following a night out and was discovered unconscious in her hotel room.

It is believed that Angela suffered a severe trauma to the brain having fallen down in her room and was not discovered by her friends until the following morning when they had to break down her bedroom door.

Angela, who is from Sheffield has had diabetes for over 20 years and uses insulin to control her condition.

Stepahnie-Louise Price, aged 24 and step daughter to Angela said “she suffered a hypo following a night out with her girl friends, when they couldn’t get her to answer the door the following morning they were forced to break it down.”

Mark Pierce, aged 48 and Angela’s partner together with Angela’s son Jamie flew out to be by her bedside but as costs began mounting up they were forced to fly back to the UK. On 15th October Angela underwent a tracostomy in a hope that it would release her from the coma, however for Angela

to be returned home insurance companies have quoted between £18,550£26,440, which the family do not have.

At the beginning of the week the family announced some really positive news about Angela’s recovery, although she is still in intensive care, she is now off of her ventilator and breathing for herself. This is a major improvement in Angela’s condition and it is hoped things continue to improve.

The family are still campaigning for Angela’s transportation home. If she continues to stabilise then the cost of this will reduce dramatically and they may be able to bring her home in a private ambulance with a stop over in France.

Angela did have travel insurance which is currently being reviewed by a group

of solicitors as the company refused to make a payment to get Angela home.

It is the families hope to raise enough funds for a medical flight back to the UK but also to help with basic accommodation for the family to be able to stay by Angela’s bedside.

Stephanie went about setting up a fundraising page and spreading the word via social media and local press and said “we have been overwhelmed with donations, the whole family is stunned by how generous people have been, we want to thank everyone who has taken the time to share and donate.”

The fund was over £6,000 as of Wednesday.

NEWS BITES COMPOSER WRITES WORDS FOR SPANISH NATIONAL

A COMPOSER from Madrid, Victor Lago, has approached the government with a proposal to set words to the nations lyric free national anthem.

Snr Lago said that he had submitted his lyrics to the lower house and started a campaign to collect the 500,000 signatures needed to enable law makers debate the issue. “My lyrics are neutral and inspired solely by my love for Spain and Spaniards”, he said.

The last time an attempt was made to add lyrics to the anthem was in 2008 and organised by the Spanish Olympic Committee but the words were deemed to be too political. The proposed lyrics begin with “glory, homeland!”

Ebola nurse recovering

THE SCOTTISH nurse who contracted Ebola, recovered and then was readmitted to hospital seriously ill is finally showing signs of recovery.

Pauline Cafferkey, aged 39, contracted Ebola whilst working in Sierra Leone earlier in the year and made the headlines throughout her illness as the nation prayed for her speedy recovery.

All seemed to be going well and Pauline was released from hospital having been declared fit and well until recently when she fell ill again.

Ms Cafferkey was readmitted to the Royal Free Hospital in London earlier this month having suffered what was being described as a relapse in her condition, which sent panic amongst those who had been in close contact with her, particularly as she had recently been to an award ceremony only a few days earlier.

Health officials have now confirmed that Pauline has been suffering from meningitis as a direct result from having had the Ebola virus.

Dr Michael Jacobs, who is treating Ms Cafferkey at the Royal Free Hospital in London said “Pauline has become unwell by meningitis caused by the Ebola virus, however, to be very clear about this, she hasn’t been re-infected with the Ebola virus, and is now showing good signs of recovery, although she has a long road ahead.”

Dr Jacobs went on to say “this is the original Ebola virus that she had many months ago, which has been lying inside the brain, replicating at a very low level probably, and has now re-emerged to cause this clinical illness of meningitis. And this is obviously a serious thing.”

The doctors are pleased with Pauline’s progress, particularly in the past few days, although she will still be in hospital for quite a while so that she can be monitored.

USA to clean up their mess The crash site in 1966

by JEANETTE RICE THE USA and Spain have signed an agreement which will finally see radioactive soil, left following a plane crash in 1966, removed.

The B-52 bomber crashed in Palomares 49 years ago and was considered the worst nuclear crash of its time.

On 17th January 1966, at the height of the cold war, the B-52 bomber collided with a KC-135 tanker plane during midair refuelling off the coast of Almería, Spain, killing seven of the 11 crew

members and leaving the remains of two of the four hydrogen bombs it was carrying to contaminate the soil.

On Monday the US secretary of state, Mr John Kerry met with the Spanish foreign minister, José Manuel GarcíaMargallo in Madrid and signed an agreement which will see the Americans remove the contaminated soil and ship it to Nevada, which is already contaminated following nuclear bomb tests back in the 50s.

Relations between the two nations has

improved over the past few years with Barack Obama saying that “a change of government in Spain might harm the progress made between them if the elections in December change rule.”

Recently Spain has seen an increase in American troops at the US Morón base, in southern Spain, now housing over 2,200 troops as opposed to the 850 previously.

Neither government has said when the removal of the radioactive material will take place, merely that it will be very soon.

GUARDIA ARREST THREE FOR ARSON

THE GUARDIA Civil of Valencia have arrested three people on suspicion of arson in the region following a covert operation.

The Guardia of Villanueva de Castellón had begun investigating fires that dated back to July of this year in the areas of Manuel, Senyera and Villanueva de Castellon Llosa de Ranes and soon became aware of a Spanish man aged 45 who they suspected started two wildfires and four other fires.

It is believed that the man set fire to the reeds near the Albaida river and then further along the route to make it more difficult for fire fighters to extinguish.

During the operation the police also arrested a Spanish woman aged 56 and a Spanish man aged 59 who have been charged with withholding information and are awaiting a court hearing.

Golf hero marks Peggy’s century

by JACK TROUGHTON GOLFER RORY McIlroy has paid tribute to the “great achievement” of Javea’s Peggy Skipwith who is still playing aged 100.

A card from the popular professional – until recently the World Number One – sent Peggy a birthday card, presented with a bouquet of flowers at a special lunch on Tuesday at Javea Golf Club.

The card read: “Great achievement still playing golf at 100-years-old, best wishes, Rory McIlroy.”

The party was organised by JAGS – the Javea Amateur Golfers Society – which plays and enjoys lunch at the club every Tuesday. Peggy is the first and only female member of the group.

She is also a member of JUGS – the Just Us Girls Society – and plays with them on Wednesdays. JUGS threw a party for Peggy last week after her birthday on 12th October.

JAGS Captain Rick Pritchard made the presentation saying: “Peggy has reached 100 years of age. A few of us, but not many do it, but not whilst still playing golf or swimming off Javea’s beaches, playing bridge, being a member of Javea’s Spanish Group, or attending church at L’Ermita.

REMARKABLE “As regards golf, this remarkable event has been recognised by none other than Rory McIlroy, the world’s best golfer.

MOTORBIKE SAFETY CAMPAIGN IN ALTEA THROUGHOUT THE week Altea’s local police have been stopping moped and motorbike riders to check their documents following several complaints from local residents of noise pollution from the vehicles.

Peggy first discovered a little fishing village called Javea in 1968 when she and her second husband Nicky Skipwith joined friends on holiday. They stayed at the only hotel, the Sol y Mar, and were so taken with the area, sold their home near Nice in France to buy a villa on the Montgo.

She played golf as a youngster and after the death of her husband took up her clubs again. Peggy also enjoyed playing tennis when she was younger and has recently been made an honorary life member of the Bridge Club in Javea.

At the party, the sprightly centenarian revealed that keeping active and busy was her secret.

She said: “I have played golf all my life, since I was 18 – I just kept going with golf, tennis and everything!”

The week long campaign, which ends on Sunday, seeks to check all such vehicles to check that they are conforming with the ITV noise regulations, helmet usage and insurance.

Vicent Ripoll, councillor for Citizen Security and Traffic said “the campaign is designed to monitor and control the sound aspects of these vehicles and take into account the exhaust pipe as well as enforce the mandatory helmet use and current ITV.” In recent weeks, residents have complained that the two wheeled vehicles make a constant noise that they consider to be excessive particularly down some of the narrow streets where the sound resonates.

A police spokesperson said “we will take this opportunity to check all the papers are in order and hope to educate riders to be considerate for the residents in the area as well as remove any vehicles which are too dangerous to be on the roads.”

TEENAGER PASCUAL Raspeig Ciscar is hearing the sounds of the world around him for the first time thanks to Costa Blanca charity Grant A Wish.

THE NEW towers at Spain’s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona will make it the tallest church in Europe.

In the biggest single project ever undertaken, the team spent almost 5,000€ for the equipment and treatment to restore the 16-year-old’s hearing.

Pascual has special needs and is one of seven kids from El Vergel sponsored by Grant A Wish to attend the Raquel Paya School in Denia – together they are known as ‘The Magnificent Seven’.

Ramon Howard, of the charity team, explained social services had hoped to contribute 20% of the total cost but it was decided to proceed in any case.

“We said as Grant A Wish, we would go ahead in any case and paid the complete bill – social services can then give us a contribution when it is received,” he said.

“Young Pascual is one of the Magnificent Seven, one of the children we have ‘adopted’ in tandem with social services.”

TESTS Weekly tests with Dr Benjamin Moreno at Optica Benjamin in El Vergel will monitor the youngster’s progress. The hearing aids were switched on at just 2% on 12th October.

“You cannot just turn it on at full volume,” said Ramon. “It is anticipated he will get to 40 or 50% of normal hearing levels – unfortunately it will never be 100% but it is a huge improvement.”

He added: “It is the biggest single project we have ever done - it’s one of Grant a Wish’s proudest moments and our team and supporters are delighted to have been able to help.”

Sunday (25th October) on a trip to see the animals at Terra Natura in Benidorm. Ramon thanked RTN for supplying tickets for the youngsters.

RTN has been asked to confirm that money for Grant A Wish at a residents’ day on Urbanisation La Sella in August solely came from the sales of raffle tickets and donations – all the money went to support the children cared for at the EMAUS home in El Vergel.

The final phase of raising six towers onto the existing building has now begun in Barcelona.

Jordi Fauli, the chief architect said “the central tower, the tallest of the six, will put the church in the record books when it is completed, with the tower measuring 172.5 metre (566 feet).”

For now the tallest tower is in Germany at the Ulm Minster which is 162 metres.

The “Tower of Jesus Christ” will be crowned by a cross and tightly surrounded by five other towers, one dedicated to Mary and four slightly shorter ones for the four apostles at the famous Gaudi structure.

Gaudi won the patronage of some of Barcelona’s wealthiest industrialist and upper-crust families, who commissioned him to build gorgeous homes and other stunning buildings and parks that have helped make Barcelona a leading tourist destination.

A fervent Catholic, Gaudi largely dedicated his life to the project, incorporating both Christian symbolism and organic forms into a unique style.

He died in 1926 and never expected the cathedral to be completed in his lifetime and some would say that the well known architectural structure may never be finished with the tower phase estimated to take just over ten years.

The monument received more than 3.2 million visits in 2014, making it one of the biggest tourist sites in Spain and is funded by the entrance fees of between 15-20 euros, with a construction budget of 25 million euros per year.

Queen rejects plea to rule USA

FRUSTRATED BY constant bickering of Republican Party presidential candidates in the USA, a frustrated American invited the Queen to restore British rule.

The campaign trail has put pushy politicians such as Donald Trump into the spotlight as they fire insults at each other – making international news.

Fed up with the constant infighting, an anglophile pleaded for Her Majesty to take the United States back – and clearly amused, Buckingham Palace replied showing a sense of humour...but turning down the offer.

The letter, on official palace notepaper, reads: “I have been asked

to respond to your recent letter to The Queen in which you express your views about the American government.

“Whilst your views have been noted, you will appreciate, I am sure, that there can be no question of The Queen intervening in the affairs of another Sovereign state.”

The reply was posted on social media site Reddit by a friend of the correspondent and has since gone viral. Explaining the history of the letter to The Queen, it added: “To our shock, they actually dignified him with a response.”

SHOCK FOR AIR PASSENGERS IN LISBON

PASSENGERS AT Lisbon Airport got more than they bargained for when waiting for their luggage at the beginning of the week as the television screens above their heads began showing a porn film.

The impromptu porn film ran for several minutes as some passengers began filming the event whilst staff rushed to stop the transmission.

A spokesperson for the airport said “we have had no complaints and can assure everyone this was not the act of a disgruntled employee. The incident occurred at 3am on 19th October along one of the luggage mats from Lisbon Airport, a TV was tuned (without sound) to a Portuguese generalist channel (this is not a porn channel), which at the time ran a soft porn film.”

The airport is now ensuring that this situation is not repeated.

Clock changes – strange but true

AS THE clocks get set to go back one hour this weekend many of us take it for granted that we just change our timepieces and that is that, however, for some it is not that simple.

Clocks move one hour backwards on the last Sunday in October 02:00 BST(01:00 GMT). For Amtrak in the US to keep to their published timetables, trains cannot leave a station before the scheduled time. So, when the clocks fall back one hour in October, all Amtrak trains that are running on time stop at 2am and wait one hour before resuming. Overnight passengers are often surprised to find their train at a dead stop and their travel time an hour longer than expected. At the spring Daylight Saving Time change, trains instantaneously become an hour behind schedule at 2am, but they just keep going and do their best to make up the time. Births and birthdays are also affected by the changes. While twins born at 11.55pm and 12.05am may have different birthdays, Daylight Saving Time can change birth order, on paper, anyway. During the time change in the October, one baby could be born at 1.55am and the sibling born ten minutes later, at 1.05am. In November 2007, Laura Cirioli of North Carolina gave birth to Peter at 1.32am and, 34 minutes later, to Allison. However, because Daylight Saving Time reverted to Standard Time at 2am, Allison was born at 1.06am.

Technology spreads through Spain

IT HAS been a week of new services for many in Spain as free WI-FI was launched for some airports and Netflix became available to many households.

Around twelve airports in the country are now able to offer travellers free internet, including Malaga, Barcelona-El Prat and Madrid. The Alicante-Elche airport unfortunately will have to wait just a little bit longer as the operator, Eurona, say that all AENA operated airports will have the service by the end of the year.

However, the free Wi-Fi service operated by Eurona Telecom is limited to 2 megabytes of data for free with those wishing to upgrade to purchase 10 megabytes within a 24 hour period at a cost of 4.90€. Eurona are also offering a monthly package which is ideal for frequent travellers who need to keep in touch for 15€.

Eurona say that they estimate the service will be used by around 200 million passengers each year.

Netflix, the popular streaming website, became available in Spain on Tuesday with customers being able to sign up for a monthly fee and view the latest blockbuster releases as well as documentaries and television series.

Netflix, which was first launched in the US nearly eight years ago, already has an agreement with Vodafone to provide their customers with a Netflix app and most new televisions and mobile devices have now been manufactured to enable more consumers to use the internet television.

The basic package will be 7.99€ per month with customers being able to upgrade for high definition for an additional euro or 11.99€ per month if they wish to watch more than one screen at a time.

Netflix’s CEO, Neil Hunt, said “television as we know it, is going to completely change in the future.”

Spain knits for Syrians ON MONDAY the Syrian People Support Association collected around 3,500 blankets made by people in Spain.

The Syrian Association is a non profit organisation based in Madrid and was overwhelmed by the generosity of the general public. The group plans to send the blankets to Syria on 30th October just in time for the approaching winter weather.

The campaign began when a facebook group was created back in September by three friends in Madrid who wanted to do something to help. The social media site didn’t disappoint as by earlier this week there were over 4,400 members.

Marta Blanco, one of the founders of the group said “everyone was talking about the refugees but it didn’t seem like anything was happening so we decided we could knit or crochet blankets to send over. The Facebook group, called “La Manta de La Vida,” or “The Blanket of Life” soon became an organised campaign of offering practical help from the Spanish people. As each blanket was finished it was packaged with a special label written in both Spanish and Arabic saying “we are with you.”

Warm up with a 2016 charity calendar

by JEANETTE RICE AS TEMPERATURES drop slightly and the nights are drawing in, the Madrid fire fighters have launched their 2016 charity calendar, which is sure to warm anyone up!

The calendar, which went on sale on Wednesday features twelve male and female fire fighters undressed and posed naked for the photos.

To create the 12 photographs for the calendar, one for each month of the year, shots were taken of the fire fighters carrying out a number of the tasks that they would usually find themselves doing whilst working, all tastefully captured on camera and smouldering with suggestion.

The calendar was officially presented by Rosa Montero, award-winning journalist for the El País newspaper, on Wednesday 21st October in the Retiro Park in Madrid.

Guests included some of the stars from the calendar, who went out amongst the public after the presentation to drum up support and sell a number of copies. With many famous and well known personalities featuring in the calendar sales are sure to go well.

The proceeds from the calendar sales will go to those less fortunate living within the city and the fire fighters hope that they can help those that are unable to get shelter, food, water and clothing.

If you fancy a more local calendar then lets not forget the Benidorm 2016 charity calendar which has been on sale for a few weeks and features many of the local performers including The Rat Pack, Gareth Fulton, Albi and local business owners such as Wayne and Des (founders of the Showboat) and also Paul from Foley’s Bar. Each month was sponsored by a local business to ensure that all the printing costs and other overheads were covered and that every euro from the sales would go to the Emaus charity.

FOUR HOUR TRAM JOURNEY

THE TRAM between Alicante and Denia excelled itself during the week by taking nearly four hours to complete the 94 km journey.

The rail union has spoken out about the appalling situation where a journey that takes only sixty minutes in a car takes two hundred and forty minutes on public transport. The rail union claims that speed reductions, because of the disrepair on parts of the track combined with the works that are ongoing between Altea and Calpe, are making it almost impossible for passengers to be guaranteed a reliable service, particularly with the works due to take a further six months.

Hospice hat-trick for MABS HOSPICE AND respite beds are now available at three sites along the Costa Blanca as the MABS Cancer Support Group – backed by other charities – invests in continued care for patients.

In the space of six days, MABS has officially opened rooms at the Savia Residential Homes in La Nucia and Villamartin, Orihuela Costa, to reach out to the community.

The initiative follows the success of the Santolina Suite, in the Ferris Hospital at Fontilles in the Marina Alta, which opened last summer.

Each of the hospice units offers peaceful and dignified rooms with lounge facilities for families and should demand for the beds grow, MABS will provide extra capacity through its relationship with Savia.

Hospice care has been the long-standing goal of MABS President Jacqui Phillips MBE. Opening the La Nucia hospice, she said: “We have rooms for respite or for

terminal care for cancer patients.

“Our primary aim is to help cancer patients but if the room is empty and there are people needing respite care, they are welcome and ask to use the room.”

CHEQUE Cancer Care Javea presented a cheque for 10,000€ for the La Nucia project and rooms and family lounges have been decorated and furnished by HELP International of Benidorm.

Special guests at the opening were British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris and Mayor of La Nucia Bernabe Cano.

Mrs Morris told RTN: “It is very heartening and very humbling to see what MABS has done – and also how they have come together with Cancer Care and HELP. It is a real team effort.

“Anyone who has a family member who is very sick must be incredibly reassured there is somewhere like this for them to go.”

She added: “It is very important how these charities are coming together and complementing each other. For example, Cancer Care Javea raises money and finds somewhere to donate it – it is to the way to make the greatest impact.”

Sue Reula, MABS Director for the Benidorm area – which stretches from Calpe to Alicante – said 18 months ago her mission was to provide a bed for those in need and people with cancer.

MISSION “I can tell you my mission has been completed – your mission is to tell everybody we have this room. Everyone here today can go away and tell anyone who has cancer or people with someone in their family who has cancer, that we are here

for them,” she said.

The MABS room is on the second floor of the La Nucia home where the nurses speak English. There are 76 rooms at the home spread over three floors.

And Sue said even before the MABs room was finished, Savia had responded an emergency call to provide beds for three terminally ill cancer patients. “They accommodated us and were brilliant”.

She said it was hoped MABS could open another room at La Nucia and Villamartin but funding was needed.

Sue said: “Every single penny you bring in helps enormously. Just 5€ assists because whatever it is, it goes into the pot towards the end result. It is important people understand whatever they can give, however small, it is all important.”

Businesses urged to back charity

by JACK TROUGHTON BUSINESSES ON the Costa Blanca are being urged to pledge money to charity each month to give good causes a dependable income to support ongoing projects.

Continental Wealth Management Director Jody Kirby said the company had donated 1,000€ a month to Make A Smile, which in turn supported EMAUS, for the last 16 months.

“We want to tell people of this commitment because we want to encourage other local businesses to do the same,” she said.

“We want to encourage other small businesses to set up an ongoing donation; obviously it doesn’t have to be such a large amount of money because everything helps.”

Speaking at CWM headquarters at La Sella, Jody said charities staged fund raising events but did not know how much cash would be generated – but the demands on charity coffers remained the same. “This allows a little forward planning.”

She added: “CWM is an investment company and this is investing in children cared for by EMAUS.” Tony Grande, President of Make A Smile, said the CWM money “was more than a donation” and was used to invest in the ‘self-sufficiency’ project at Relleu and to help

children gain educational qualifications.

WORK He said the farm aimed to provide work for young men and women living at an EMAUS home at Relleu looking after young adults with special needs.

“CWM has sponsored this, which is our main line of attack to try and get these young people to work and create their own money – it’s a long term plan,” said Tony.

“The list is endless – it helps us with our educational plans for EMAUS kids as they get older and sometimes it is simply feeding the kids.”

And he said a dependable monthly income was important as Make A Smile could commit to helping the older EMAUS children gain educational qualifications and to go on training courses; helping prepare them for life outside the family atmosphere of the charity homes.

“We hope that there are companies will want to sponsor a child to help gain qualifications in further education after they finish school at 16,” added Tony.

“It is an investment, we are trying to build something for the future and CWM has helped us in so many different areas.”

Spanish pride sunk at Trafalgar THE SANTISSIMA Trinidad – once the mightiest ship in the world – and the pride of the Spanish fleet sank a day after being captured at the Battle of Trafalgar, 210 years ago this week.

A replica of the ‘first rate’ is anchored in Alicante Harbour, and can be visited as she is a floating restaurant and bar. The historical ‘dreadnought’ still makes an impressive sight.

The original was built in Cuba and launched in 1769 as a 112-gun three-decker. However, the ship of the line was modified in 1796 when her forecastle and quarterdeck were joined to create a fourth gun deck and incorporate 130 cannon.

At 4,905 tons she was much larger than Admiral Lord Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory but was a poor sailor and the light winds off Trafalgar on 21st October, 1805, were not suited to her bulk.

When the Royal Navy ships under Nelson clashed with the combined French and Spanish fleets, the sheer size of the Santissima Trinidad made her a target – she finally surrendered to HMS Neptune, a 98-gun ‘second rate’.

She was taken under tow by HMS Prince but the day after the battle as a storm blew up following the historic battle she was scuttled and sank.

However, the Santissima Trinidad was the most heavily armed ship in the world and carried the most guns in the Age of Sail – and also one of the few four-deck first rate ships of the line ever built.

by JACK TROUGHTON MEMBERS OF the Royal British Legion in Javea launched their 2015 Poppy Appeal with the traditional sponsored walk around the Arenal Beach.

The branch raised 9,500€ last year – down on the previous year as its ‘hunting ground’ has shrunk, neighbouring Moraira is now part of the Calpe Branch’s collection area.

However, everyone was in good spirits in the sunshine last Saturday and committed to raising as much money as possible. The branch has 75 collection boxes and poppies spread around businesses from Benitachell to Denia.

service will be held in the Fisherman’s Church in Javea Port on Sunday 8th November. The Royal British Legion standard will be joined by the standards of the Royal Navy Association, the Royal Air force Association, and the Air Crew Association.

The service begins at the unusual time of 3pm – allowing everyone to watch the Cenotaph Parade in London. Everyone is welcome at the service and the church is usually ‘standing room only’.

The Legion in Javea is keen to recruit new members. The branch meets at L’Ancora Tennis Club, near the beach, on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. Meetings officially begin

at 11.30am but most people gather 30 minutes earlier for a coffee and a chat.

Branch membership secretary Pam Dawes said anyone interested in the legion would be made very welcome – they do not have to have served with the armed forces – and members enjoy a good social programme throughout the year.

“We would love to see more people come to one of our meetings to see what goes on,” said Pam “If they like what they see, we would give them a great welcome as a member of the branch.”

by Keith Nicol IT WAS a pleasure and privilege to be invited to speak at the tenth anniversary of TRAC, Torrevieja’s Retired Activities Club at their regular meeting at the Marina Club Cafe in the Marina International. The very active social club welcome all nationalities, but nearly all are English speakers. They hold a monthly meeting on the third Wednesday of each month where they always try to have a speaker on interesting or entertaining topics, then conduct the club business, so I tried my best. The tenth anniversary was attended by 45 members plus nine new members who signed up on the day, for which they send out a message of welcome.

According to committee members, most members turn up early around 10.30am to sit and talk to friends whilst having a coffee and some stay on after the meeting, which starts at 11am, to relax in the ambient atmosphere afforded by the great location on Torrevieja’s waterfront.

Once a month they have a lunch on a Sunday, at various different restaurants around the Torrevieja and surrounding areas along with an event day during each month, such as tenpin bowling, a coastal walk to a coffee stop and

As a result an initial payment of 7,500€ was made to the charity and an outstanding balance of 2,500€ will be transferred on the production of relevant invoices.

Several further concerns were also highlighter for further discussion – including a new home for the Local Animal Protection Society’s shelter.

The charity has extended its lease for the current premises on the basis of the town hall looking for a new site with electricity and water facilities – there is even talk of the local authority buying the existing site from a private owner who is said to be keen to sell.

However, the talks are ongoing and LAPS President Chrissie Edwards told RTN: Our main concerns are always for the welfare of abandoned animals, plus of course, the reputations of the charity and its hardworking volunteers.

“Both parties agree that better integration between the Spanish and British supporters would be of great benefit and further the support give to our local animals in need.”

Earlier this month, from 12th to 15th October, 44 members took a bus and hotel trip to Spain’s Capital Madrid, with David’s Coaches. The trip was organised by Malcolm and Mary although Mary was poorly and unfortunately could not attend, leaving Malcolm to organise everyone on his own. The excursion took the group to Hotel Principe Pio, a Three Star hotel located just a short walk from the Royal Palace and the perfect location for exploration and included free time to enjoy the capital plus trips outside the city to the fabulous sites of Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen.

Chris’s Corner BE HONEST – look at the mugshot – I’ve got a phizog only a myopic Mum could love. The movie Gorillas In The Mist was filmed in my shower. However it didn’t stop me appearing on TV - albeit in New Zealand where the bar is fairly low.

Can you name any Kiwi Telly performers to crack it in the UK? No! You can’t have Phillip Schofield or The Galloping Gourmet, they may have started their careers Down Under, but they are as British as Biriyani. My first Luvvie venture occurred when I had just arrived from the UK and will be quickly dealt with. It was a Comedy Sitcom which suffered from one major flaw – it wasn’t funny.

My part was a David Brent type character and my performance was thus described in the next day’s papers TV review “The programme was mildly amusing with some reasonable performances. Chris Ashley however, just arrived from Nottingham, was more wooden than Sherwood Forest.” So that’s my career down the khazi. com – well almost, but not quite.

Along came the 1983 TVNZ 24 Hour Telethon, similar to Red Nose Day, where I was the dogsbody Del Dia to the stars. Top of the Bill was Erik Estrada, who at that time was the Hot Cop in the show Chips, (unfortunately, in reality, he had the charisma of road kill). Second on the bill was Rolf Harris, looking back, was there a whiff of the Savile Syndrome? Should we have sussed anything to interest Operation Yewtree? Let me give you an example. It was common knowledge one of the women presenters was of the Sapphic persuasion.

However this didn’t stop good old Rolf trying it on ( perhaps he thought he could put her straight with his Beardy Charm). He kept a patting & a panting until she turned on him and said “B****R OFF ROLF YOU’RE THE WRONG SHAPE MATE!” Thing is most chaps would slink off, but not our Rolf, he just moved on to the next prey asking in his jocular manner “Can you tell what it is yet?” And let’s not for a split second get within a G’day of Jake & his extra appendage - Thank You! Quiz adds to HELP success

BUSY FUND-raisers at Jalon Valley HELP have added more than 2,000€ into charity coffers in recent weeks thanks to support at four events.

Last Friday’s Quiz night at the El Cid Restaurant in Benidoleig raised 614€ and the charity’s stalls at Sunday’s Alcalali Cancer Day contributed a further 445€. The recent Lliber Summer Fair and the charity’s Cream Tea added 831€ and 644€ respectively.

Quiz nights have always been a favourite with supporters and the threestrong team ‘Dorothy Squires’ Fan Club’ (pictured) were able to take the prize on this occasion.

The contest, again run by Jan and Harry Byatt, started with two rounds of questions, followed by a break for supper and another two rounds of brain teasers. However, no one is ever idle, there were a further two rounds of questions on each table.

And together with another famous HELP raffle and a series of donations – Charlie Calcott of El Cid added 100€ as a birthday celebration – the financial success of the event was assured.

The charity is staging a Christmas Cava and Wine Tasting Evening on Friday 30th October at El Cid. Tickets are 19.50€ including a three-course menu with the wines, provided by Casa del Vino of Javea, intended to complement a traditional festive dinner. SUPPORT FOR BREAST CANCER

La Nucia ribbon

TOWNS AROUND the region showed their support this weekend by placing giant pink ribbons in prominent places to commemorate the International Day Against Breast Cancer.

On Sunday afternoon in La Nucia a giant pink ribbon was held up on the steps of the Plaça Major as Bernabé Cano, mayor for the town, read a manifesto that included how every 35 minutes someone in Spain is diagnosed with breast cancer.

In Alfaz del Pi the IES L’Arabi went pink for the second year running to mark the occasion as pupils and teachers gathered whilst one of the students read out a manifesto which highlighted the need for prevention and early diagnosis of the disease.

The school was chosen for the commemoration specifically to emphasis the need to educate the younger generation about prevention and awareness and how to support those affected by cancer.

Diabetes support meetings DIABETES SUPPORT meetings run by HELP of Denia and the Marina Alta continue next month led by Dorothy Cook, a recently retired specialist nurse working with the disease.

The meetings have been organised in Teulada on Tuesday 24th November and La Xara on Friday 27th November – each with a different guest speaker.

Diabetes is now a serious issue for the individual and society in general and everyone is welcome – whether they have diabetes, they know someone with the condition, or they just wish to discover more.

The Teulada meeting is in the MABS room at the IMED building in Cami Calvari.

Guest speaker is nutritionist Ann Mather, whose presentation is called ‘The power of nutrition: managing diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol’.

And the La Xara meeting is at the HELP Activity Centre at Avenida Oeste 29, next to the Tabac. Dr Erik Rempt from Clinica La Ermita, Javea, is speaking.

Both meetings are from 4.30pm to 6.30pm and allow time for questions on anything related to diabetes as well as queries put so speakers.

Christmas is coming

Volunteer teachers wanted VOLUNTEERS ARE needed to help run English classes in Calpe and teach more than 80 students keen to learn the language.

The town hall runs English classes in the Casa de Cultura on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. There are four levels: initiation, beginners, intermediate, and advanced.

And it is also hoped native English speakers will help with junior school classes during lunch breaks, helping youngsters with the language.

“We need as many volunteers as possible,” said organiser Councillor Carole Saunders. “The more the merrier.

“And people who have taken part in previous years say it is very rewarding. It is enjoyable, lots of fun and you have the opportunity to make friends with local Spanish people and people of other nationalities.”

U3A JAVEA’s walking group put on a united front to say a fond farewell to popular member Pam Sotnick on her final trek before returning to the UK. Around 50 members joined group leaders Clive and Karen White to enjoy a final few kilometres with Pam in the countryside around Benitachell’s Les Fonts urbanisation.

Pam is leaving Spain to live in Portsmouth to be nearer to her mother but has been a member of U3A’s ‘healthy walking’ and ‘intermediate walking’ groups for a number of years and will be sorely missed.

Kings of the road

I WOULD like to see the Spanish government introduce a law for all cyclists using the roads to be taxed. This would not only help boost the economy but be fairer to all road users who have to pay tax.

We all know the frustration we feel when we are stuck behind 2 or 3 cyclists taking up half of the road with a long tailback of vehicles behind us.

A fair price would be 20-30 Euros per Annum and a tax sticker displayed on the front or rear of the bike. Anyone not having a tax disc could be fined and police should do spot checks at regular intervals As Kings of the road they seem to be a law unto themselves, but they should respect all road users and by doing so would be respected in return.

I HAVE just been reading on Facebook about the ridiculous heavy handed behaviour of the so called doormen in various bars in Benidorm. I spend a lot of time in Benidorm and think that it’s a great place and it is a shame that it gets a bad name because of things like this. David Young

OVER THE past few years there has been a noticeable increase of large, well-stocked, Chinese stores popping up everywhere. I recall hearing that they were being allowed to come into Spain to help stimulate Spain’s weak economy. The people working in these stores would even brag about not having to pay taxes. How many government officials have received bribes to allow this? A bribe corrupts the heart, and that surely appears the case in this country.

They come into European countries flogging their inferior quality merchandise and what does China import from countries like Spain?

Virtually nothing.

Since they are not paying taxes while our Suma tax has increased it looks like the only economy being helped is the Chinese economy. I have made up my mind to no longer spend any money in these stores but rather purchase goods in struggling Spanish shops.

Royal Naval Association celebrates 25 years

by KEITH NICOL THE TORREVIEJA Branch of The Royal Naval Association celebrated their 25th anniversary on Wednesday evening, as part of their annual Trafalgar Day black tie dinner.

Over 90 guests attended the event including Torrevieja’s Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon, Councillor for NGOs Carmen Morate and representing the town’s Foreign Residents Carlos Gonzales, while former Director of the Foreign Residents Association Jean Paul Mulero also enjoyed the dinner and company.

The branch presently have more than 80 full time members and meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 5pm in El Pariso Bar, located close to Carrefour. Everyone is welcome, be they former Royal Navy, merchant seamen or just those with a love of the sea who agree with the principles of the organisation. The RNA organise many social activities, lunches

around the region and partake in many other events, plus of course such important occasions as Remembrance Sunday.

In 1992 after successful negotiations with the RNA Headquarters in London, the Torrevieja Branch of the RNA was formed, comprising around twelve members. 2005 saw membership pass the enrolment of their 100th member. Current membership is around 95 although many members go back and forth to the UK with a core of about 80 always in Torrevieja.

The aim of the Association is to further the efficiency of the Service in which members are serving, or have served by fostering ‘Esprit de Corps’ by preserving the traditions of the Service and achieving those ideals for which Naval services have fought. We help and assist our members to integrate with the Spanish community, and to this end they enjoy a very close and friendly working relationship with the Town Hall. RNA Chairman Paul Edwards said that the “Association

are proud to be included in a number of official events and fiestas held annually in the Torrevieja area.”

Their activities include the distribution of useful information from a wide range of both UK and Spanish sources, and guidance on the availability of expert advice often in such problem areas as pensions, entitlements, tax regulations etc can be made available. A very worthwhile, but little publicized aspect of the Association is assistance which can be offered in a variety of welfare cases; which is given in complete confidence. Additionally, and very importantly, they all enjoy an extremely busy and hugely enjoyable social programme.

Don’t mention the ‘C’ word

GUITARIST RICHARD Durrant brings his “chameleon” style of music to the Costa Blanca this weekend planning to win hearts and minds with two audiences.

Classically trained at the Royal College of Music – he did a post-graduation course in studio production and loves electronic wizardry – he encompasses all styles in his shows.

“I am not very keen on the word ‘classical’ – the ‘C’ word,” he told RTN in an exclusive interview. “I trained at the Royal College and there is some classical in my shows but music is all the same to me, it is all up for grabs.”

Richard, who turns 53 next week, has built an International reputation for his musicianship whether playing with an orchestra or appearing solo over the last 30 years.

“I’m very much looking forward to coming to the Costa Blanca – it is always good and important to reach out to new audiences,” he said. “And it is a joy to show what the guitar can do.

“It is a magical chameleon type thing and very much a chameleon type set. There is a lot in there from classical music to Jethro Tull.”

Richard plays the Hermita de St Josep in La Fustera, Benissa, tonight (Friday) in support of the Anglican Chaplaincy at 7.15pm – doors open at 6.15pm.

And he appears at the Parador Hotel in Javea on Sunday (29th October) to support ‘Guitarras del Corazon’ at 4.30pm, doors open at 3.30pm.

WHISPERER Tickets are 15€ and available at the door for an enjoyable programme of work under the banner: ‘The Guitar Whisperer’.

The music will include ‘Chaconne’ by JS Bach; an arrangement of Debussy’s ‘Reverie’, an intriguing performance of Mike Oldfield’s ‘Tubular Bells’; and Richard’s own ‘Cycling Music’, featuring guitar, sequencers and bicycles.

It is also an opportunity to show techniques he learnt in the studio producing and recording other people’s work. “I love microphones and things to do with sound and the sonic quality of life – it doesn’t matter whether it is a beautiful piece of music on a guitar or the sound of a banana going up a Hoover – it is the sound that matters.

“You can play most of side two of Tubular Bells without too much fiddling about but there is a bit of cheating and fun in the gig. I do cheat but it is all about getting a sumptuous sound.”

Over the years, Richard has become known as the ‘barefoot guitarist’. He said it was all about relaxation and making audiences feel at home.

“I spend time writing, doing admin work, and playing on stage – which is the most peaceful, wonderful time of the day. It’s only natural to take your shoes off and relax,” he explained.

“I have been doing it for so long. If anyone is wearing large boots and clumps across the stage it annoys me, it’s a lack of respect.

“There are many ways to try and feel at home. If I am on stage and the host for all the people out front, it’s my responsibility – they paid the money – and I want them to relax and enjoy.”

IT WAS announced in the press recently that approximately £9,000,000 has been lost by pensioners investing their cashed in pension money in fraudulent schemes since April this year and this number is increasing rapidly. Recent estimates also suggest nearly £1 billion was lost to pension liberation scams prior to the pension reforms.

Con men are targeting savers’ nest eggs following the introduction of pension freedoms ministers have warned, with more than a dozen websites shut down by authorities.

Ministers have urged people considering cashing in pensions to be vigilant, warning that scams can be highly sophisticated and appear credible.

Under the pension reforms introduced in April, over-55s are able to withdraw their entire pension funds in cash. Experts have suggested that the reforms make savers even more vulnerable to pension fraud, with tens of thousands of people who choose to take advantage of the freedoms likely to fall prey to criminals.

Once cash has been handed over there is little chance of getting it back, regulators have warned.

Baroness Altmann, the minister for pensions, said: “The criminals behind this illegal activity often lay a sophisticated trap complete with glossy brochures and professional websites that make them look highly credible. Don’t fall for it.

“Scammers wreck people’s lives; it really is as plain and simple as that.”

Motion debated in the House of Commons for “no fault” divorce A ten minute motion will be debated in the House of Commons today (13th October 2015) at the instigation of Conservative MP Richard Bacon seeking to bring in a Bill providing for “no-fault” divorce in England and Wales.

The current law provides that the only ground for divorce is the irretrievable breakdown of a marriage. This requires one of five “facts”: 1. Adultery or 2. Unreasonable behaviour or 3. Desertion for two years or 4. Two years separation and consent to the divorce or 5. Five years separation So unless the spouses have lived apart for at least two years (and they both consent to the divorce) blame has to be apportioned. This often causes unnecessary hostility at a time when relations are already strained through relationship breakdown. The reasons in law for the breakdown of a marriage are usually irrelevant to the financial outcome. The law as it currently stands sadly encourages unneeded conflict and dispute.

The push for a “no fault” divorce based system is not new. It spans over many years. Lawyers have campaigned for this change for a long time. Parliament passed “no fault” divorce legislation in 1996 but a subsequent government did not implement it so parliament has already given a green light in principle.

Resolution, a national organisation for family law solicitors across England and Wales is campaigning for a change on the law. Lucy Loizou, a Partner at The International Family Law Group LLP and also an elected member of Resolution’s National Committee says: “A change to the law is long overdue. The archaic concept of blame has no place in law in divorce cases. Tensions are already high when a marriage breaks down. I was having coffee the other morning with one of my associates and she was busy showing me her business plan for her new bakery and coffee shop.

I was fully taken with her extensive planning with regards to her location, its parking and traffic flow and the fact that there were a number of schools in the area from which she could draw the mothers after they dropped off their children.

I was very impressed with her numbers for her startup inventory and expenses. She had a good understanding of this side of the business from working years for a food wholesaler.

However, when she started to tell me the name of her enterprise and the logo that she had sketched out – this is when I lost interest. She explained that she wanted it to appeal to the Spanish market but also to the expat market. That is all well and good but the name she picked was boring and her logo was not memorable at all.

So for the next hour or so, we brainstormed and I helped to guide her through the importance of a catchy logo with an unforgettable symbol, name and slogan that will work for her both in marketing efforts and public relations.

Here are some of the points that we worked on together…

KNOW YOUR CUSTOMER In this case, a coffee house and bakery near a school suggest that women will be her primary customers, hence her logo will need to be something that ap-

peals this market segment.

It will need to be female oriented because something masculine and hard will not work.

BE UNIQUE In this case, just a cup of coffee on the logo would be boring and certainly not original. A unique logo will stand out on all of your marketing from mugs to bags and it will be recognized immediately by your fans.

BE TIMELESS Choose a symbol that will carry you throughout the years. The worst thing is to have to rebrand later on in your business life. Choose a symbol that is recognizable to any age group and especially to your market segment no matter what nationality. Great logos are timeless and ageless.

BE COLOURFUL The best way to get someone’s attention is with colour. A bright and cheery logo that puts a smile on your face will win and a dark or pale logo will be forgotten in a second. There is a lot of psychology associated with colour – learn it and use it.

BE SIMPLE Don’t complicate your logo with a big long message.

Remember, less is more! Keep the door open for the

client’s imagination to fill in the blanks. Focus on a clear idea and slogan that wraps you up in a few words.

BE SMART Take advantage of the psychology of iconography and shapes. There are piles of research on the emotional messages in simple shapes and icons. Learn it and use it to express your business message and emotion.

BE MODERN There are a million font texts out there so look for a font that expresses you as a new and modern company. Of course if you cannot find a font that works for you, then just keep to the most recognizable ones like Verdana, Times New Roman and Ariel.

BE ADAPTABLE Make sure that your logo will work on all of your marketing – big and small. Remember to design your logo in high resolution and in a large file format because you can always shrink a large file but you can never enlarge a small file without pixel distortion CONCLUSION In today’s society, we have less time to tell our story and message so a great logo must open doors for us. Engagement is the key principle to all business efforts and your logo must be your first impression to the party.

Golfers chip in for charity Salesmen caught in May’s world

NEW COMEDY ‘A Foot in the Door’ is a hilarious play spent in the company of golden-hearted but lonely elderly lady May and four foot-in-the-door salesmen entering her world.

Javea Players are giving the show an outing next month and director Norman Dunnington has found a very funny leading lady Carole Saunders – who remains on stage throughout.

The play is penned by Richard Harris. Known for his crime and mystery writing, he has won the Writer’s Guild of Great Britain’s prize for best situation comedy, while one of his pays, ‘Stepping Out’, has appeared in three versions – including a musical.

His pedigree also stands out having contributed to hit shows such as A Touch of Frost, The Avengers, The Saint, the Sweeney, and the Last Detective. A Foot in the Door made its low key world premiere at the Mill, Sonning, near Reading – it has yet to play before a major theatre audience.

Carole uses timing and empathy to introduce the audience to May – an elderly widow with a heart of gold, a touch forgetful, and with no more daily ambition than a good cuppa and some company. And she enjoys a packed home when she has the four salesmen – one with his assistant – to help make her day and deliver some side-splitting humour to the audience.

Campbell Lamont has organised the event at Oliva Nova Golf Club, which takes the form of a Texas Scramble with a shotgun start at 9.45am.

People are invited to take part as individuals or as a team and entry to the competition includes a 5€ donation to Cancer Care. Entry prices are as follows: green fee and lunch, non-members 57€, members 30€; green fee only, non-members 45€, members 15€; buggy, non-members 25€ and members 18€.

Lunch only is 18€.

Spooky station bar THE TRAIN station bar in Alfaz del Pi (Estación del Mar) is getting ready to celebrate Halloween on 31st October with a haunting evening packed full of ghoulish surprises and competitions.

Tickets are priced at 10€ and include a glass of Halloween punch from the cauldron, entrance into the fancy dress competition and access to the large buffet. The venue will be alive with hauntingly good live bands and later in the evening club music will help keep those feeling like the living dead partying until the earlier hours.

Building raised beds:Part 2

WHAT CAN RAISED BEDS BE MADE FROM? THE WALLS could be constructed with railway sleepers, long logs, old doors or panels, dry stone walls, cemented brick or rocks, aggregate blocks or peat blocks.

The advantages and disadvantage of each are discussed in Chapter 3.5 of ’Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’. We prefer long lasting cemented stone, rendered block walls or wooden railway sleepers.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF RAISED BEDS? The practical benefits are as follows. a. You can use them for a wide range of plantings including: A small vegetable patch.

A herb collection.

A small orchard of fruit trees.

A collection of roses.

The base for a rockery or water garden.

Mixed herbaceous and shrub beds.

Collections of succulents. b. You do not need to walk on the soil which means that you can use every square centimetre for growing crops. Therefore the soil will not be compacted by your weight. c. They can be filled with a soil/sand/compost/manure mix which is fertile, well draining and easy to work and unlikely to be compacted by heavy rains followed by hot baking sun. d. The paths between and around the beds can be clear of weeds and mud. They can either be pointed rock slabs, cm of stone chippings laid over black plastic sheeting or

trodden down deep straw. e. You can use them in a garden which has no topsoil. Even on solid rock or a previously concreted area. f. A drip or porous pipe irrigation system can be easily set up. g. Anything can be grown in soil depths of 40cm or more including potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes. h. Spreading vegetables such as courgettes, cucumbers, trailing tomatoes, capers and nasturtiums can be cascaded down the outside of the walls to reduce the space taken up on the top of the bed. i. It is easy to install tunnel cloches made to fit the beds for winter plant protection

and summer shading for leaf crops that can wither in the sun. j. They are easy to extend if you have the space. k. A number of raised beds could be hidden away in various parts of the garden if you do not want a large dedicated area. l. They are particularly user friendly for child, aged and infirm gardeners.

The ‘ten tub’ vegetable garden we describe in Chapter 3.9 of ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ uses large size builders buckets as mini raised beds has significant additional advantages for vegetable and fruit growers..

THE OCTOBER meeting was hosted by June Phillips, John Howes, a club member and a lifelong grower, exhibitor and Royal Horticultural Society Judge, gave a talk about the planting and care of spring bulbs.

John’s talk tied in neatly with the announcement of a new growing competition. Each member was given five mini daffodil bulbs to plant and grow on. The winning pot of flowering bulbs will be judged next year.

The next speaker was Anna Van Dijk, who gave a very inspiring talk and demonstration on making decorations from dried seed pods and foliage. She had made lovely decorations and everyone was very impressed by Anna’s skills.

The Photographic Competition was judged next. There were 34 entries, and some spectacular images. The members chose two joint winners, Anna’s close up of an unfurling Datura blossom, and Alan Davis’ of a Gerbera.

The next meeting will be at Bar Trasgu, Calle Alicante 12, Formentera del Segura, on Monday 2nd November at 2.15pm for a 2.30pm start. There will be a talk on roses by Ron Harris, and two competitions, for a vase of flowers from your own garden or terrace, and for an arrangement of dried seed heads and foliage. Please bring your entries on the day.

Nicky’s Jam Session – La Estacion Del Mar, Alfaz Del Pi JAM SESSIONS have always been a good meeting place to catch up with friends once a week and listen to good music. As there hasn’t been anywhere in the last couple of years in the Albir/Altea area....Nicky Chapman thought The Railway Station Bar (La Estacion del Mar) in Alfaz del Pi to be the ideal place to hold a Jam Session as there are no close neighbours.

Nicky started the sessions a couple of

months ago and they are held every Sunday, starting at 5 pm. They are becoming more popular as the word spreads with people coming from as far away as Calpe and Benidorm. Location is good as the train stops outside the bar, as does a No. 10 bus from Benidorm, plus plenty of parking.  WHILST WORKING at the Paramount studios Anne Hathaway fancied a poached egg, an English muffin and avocado for breakfast. She got it then sent it all back saying the egg was too runny, then again saying the muffin got cold while her egg was being re-poached, then again because the second egg cooled down too much while the second muffin was being toasted. The caterers finally got it right by which time Anne said she wanted a fried egg instead of a poached one! God help us!

TO ADD to his Life Stories shows Piers Morgan is now co-hosting Good Morning Britain with Susanna Reid. Last week the no so shy Piers waxed lyrical on the delicate subject of Susanna´s supposed flirty interviewing technique, with Luke Evans, David Beckham and David Cameron three of her alleged victims. “I think it’s pathetic” he said “she’s a very good interviewer; they should back off as it’s annoying to her because she’s a highly trained, professional journalist.” We hear you Piers!

ONE OF last week’s Tweets on the Glastonbury 2016 ticket sales debacle featured katiemux saying Bloody waste of time! I Hope Coldplay headline and you all have a sh** time, and hey presto her wish has come true. Coldplay will close the festival on the Sunday night, having also headlined in 2002, 2005 and 2011, and performed in 1999 and 2000 in behind their hit debut album ´Parachutes.´ 37% of the people in an online survey ticked the box that said ´I want to consciously uncouple from my ticket!

J.K. ROWLING was smart enough to realise the Harry Potter stories had travelled their course, and instead wrote prequel ´Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.´ She then got Oscar Winner Eddie Redmayne to play the lead role as Newt Scaramander and shooting is due to begin soon, and of all places to reenact 1920´s New York they’ve settled on Liverpool. A large area of the Mersey waterfront has already been cordoned off in preparation for the 530 cast and crew. Great is Dat!

ALTHOUGH MICK and the boys are well into their 70´s, The Rolling Stones still have their foot to the floor when they hit the road. The rider for their current tour has leaking out, and it states that the hotel must have a bar that doesn’t close, their room windows must be blacked out, and they want extra butlers on call to accommodate large room service requests. Each room must also be filled with Marlboro Reds and Marlboro Lights, and the hotel must have an after hour’s dry cleaning service. Crazy but Clean then!!

The Strange but True tale of Bruce and Bubbles

THERE’S A bar in the small town of Prescott, Arizona called Matt’s Saloon, and on a quiet Tuesday night there a couple of weeks ago, just like a scene from a US hick town movie, a group of guys rode in on motorcycles. One of them was Bruce Springsteen, and, buddies in tow, they wandered into Matt´s Saloon.

Wearing a leather vest and a bandana round his neck Bruce and some of the guys sat in and jammed with the house band and played ´I’m On Fire´ from his 1984 album ´Born in The U.S.A.´ An interesting aside here is that Denny Orr, the rhythm guitarist of the house band, then asked Bruce if he would sing ´Pink Cadillac, ´ also from 1984, and the singer declined saying he couldn’t remember the words! Alright! Talking to the Deseret News Denny also tells us that when Bruce and the boys started playing there was only seven or eight people in the bar, but the word soon spread, and again like a scene from a movie, peeps came from far and wide, and within 10 minutes the number had multiplied to close on a 100 to see The Boss cutting it in sleepy Prescott. I’ve used a couple of references already to this story being like something from a movie, and I have one more for you, and it is likely to have you thinking I’ve made the whole thing up. The word is that when the growing mob got too chaotic a barmaid called Bubbles organised some heavies to help Bruce and the boys escape out the back door and one of them told him how Bubbles was having difficulty paying some pretty hefty medical bills. A week later, Matt’s Saloon received an envelope addressed to Bubbles. Inside was a cheque for $100,000.

Kathy Burke, who played Patsy’s fasttalking, power-lunching, cockney-accented magazine editor Magda in a couple of TV episodes, has tweeted that she might reprise the role in the movie. Kathy added a pic that read

AFA Torrevieja president retires

by KEITH NICOL IN A small and modest event held on Friday at the headquarters of AFA Torrevieja, the Alzheimer’s Association, their president for the last 11 years, Matilde Sanchez, finally announced her retirement bringing to an end and incredible tenure for the organisation.

Now 79, Matilde has taken AFA from its roots to one of the most valued and needed associations in the City of Salt.

Local historian, writer, journalist and creator of the Solidarity Calendar, Andy Ormiston had this to say about Matilde, which many others would agree with 100%: “Awesome is a much-maligned word freely thrown about nowadays by youngsters. But it is a word that describes Matilde Sanchez and her work as president and co-founder of the local Alzheimer’s Association that reaches out to patients and families in the Vega Baja area.

Since 2004 she has been indefatigable in building up the association, organising volunteers and professionals alike, thinking up new projects, urging others to become involved, raising funds – or rather chasing up funding.

Her inspiration has always been the period in her life watching her husband fade away as another Alzheimer’s victim. She understands the anguish of families who grapple with the difficulties of caring for a patient, with its many frustrations and dismay watching a loved personality dissolve.

Matilde is reluctantly stepping down now as president of the AFA, because the job and workload requires someone with a bit more energy that she has at her age in life when so many others are happy to sit at home knitting. She is well known by almost everyone, being stopped by people in the street for a quick word, chasing municipal officials for the use of buildings for some sort of fund raising event. She is on first name terms with mayors and peons working in town hall premises.

Being bi-lingual Matilde has been a bridge between the Spanish and the expatriates of various nations, but especially the British. Rather like the Scarlet Pimpernel she has been here, there and everywhere accepting donations for AFA whether it be from an association, a concert or show, an art exhibition or individuals who want to be part of a very important venture in

the Torrevieja area. She is frequently badgering others with ideas for fundraising events. All this requires a great deal of energy, which Matilde generates inspiring others, but it has been taking its toll on her recently.

The British community has been a mainstay in supporting many charitable organisations in Spain and Alzheimer’s Family Association is one that needs to be continually supported.

Matilde has pushed for a Day Centre, a charity shop and another project a 24-hour residence still at planning stage. Her experience over many years in the textile “rag” industry has meant she has been meticulous in the selection of clothing for sale at the shop with a high standard not found elsewhere. Clothing rejected has still been used as it has been passed on to other charity shops.

I hope that this wonderful AFA support will continue among the British and welcome Puri Garcia who is now president of the association.

Another lovely lady, who has been associated for several years with AFA, as a vocal on the governing body. She speaks and understands some English but will be helped by Juande whose contact number is 636 410 708.

If It’s Your Birthday This Week

IF THIS astrological year is to continue as it starts, you are in for a very fast ride. Make sure in the current whir of things that you do have the temerity to ask for what you richly do deserve to have; and the knowledge and confidence to make it work well for you and all you love and care for!

Indians and cowboys WHEN I was a little boy there was always a Cowboy film to watch, and though we had colour television in New York such films were made in a plethora of glorious black and white. Whilst my friends cheered on the cowboys and honoured the Bonanza territory of the”Ponderosa”; I was always very concerned for the Native American Indians, with their wonderful feather headdresses and their superior knowledge of the land in which they lived.

OK there was the odd scalping and horse stealing going on, but these were actions kept in balance by the stealth of the cowboy and many a silver bullet. The white men rode into towns and took what was there for the taking, and this included the land of the native people. As recompense they built townships and brought in saloons and the dancing girls. Alcohol fuelled cowboys but was rejected hands down by the Indian population. The Sheriff was brought in but with him came corruption and the convenience of laws that could be adapted to facilitate stealth and land grab. As far as I was concerned the faces of the braves and the scouts, the squaws and their papooses; looked pinched and mean as their country was snatched away from them piecemeal. No wonder some head shrinking was practised since these were ethnic groups simply warning those who would steal from them. And the thefts went on in perpetuity until there was preciously nothing left. Suffering as they did, the Native American Indian became subjects of disgrace because they retaliated as best that they could. Guns became the protective force behind trumped up laws that should never have been written but which used absolute trickery with the result that finally Natives of North America became recluses, living, as some still do, in compounds and reservations annexed to them. A reason enough to hate cowboys and a strong reason to support such noble members of the indigenous and original population.

Since the age of forty I have enjoyed the support of a Native Indian Guide. Guides work on spiritual levels with those on Earth who request them. These Guides have had at least one life here on Earth, often indeed they have had many more. Whatever their reason for choosing to work with spiritual people they have elected to work with all aspects of their highly tuned knowledge and their inner wisdoms for the good of mankind. You may find this very touching as I do. I feel very humble and shudder at what happened to so many good people who really learned to love their homes, and to respect their lands. But I was thrilled to change my Guide when I was forty years old, and delighted that such a spiritual young man came into my life to assist my spiritual needs. I enjoy the protection that I need in the professional World of the Medium, and this I reward by never, ever telling anybody his name, it is a secret with me and it will die with me. Such is the force of energy and respect that binds us together in bond of contact. This was also the Indian way of faith and it is hardly surprising that so many of them actually step forward to work with and reward living spiritual people. My Indian was held down and made to watch whilst his wife and children were cut into pieces after a dispute in land. His tortured soul needed to have some clearance, and our symbiotic relationship began with an understanding that we would work together for future peace and my safety. I am glad of it, and he is too.

Many tribes are living in poverty in the USA at this time. The Lakota tribe recorded the youngest suicide ever when a seven year old boy shot himself in the mouth after his big brother was constantly refused employment and further opportunities to make a career were stymied. This particular tribe have a rule of thumb. they either all eat or nobody eats. Often there is not enough food and they do actually eat once a day. Just like every reservation in the US each reservation now has its own Court presided over by a Judge. This had led to an escalation of rapes as male residents outside the Reservations break in to violate Native Indian Girls. Since the crime is committed inside the Reservation the Court convened to protect the Indian Community has no juris diction over these outsiders. The offenders are never brought to justice, and until due process changes, never can be. It would seem that after many lifetimes of suffering it is remarkable that Native Indian Guides still step forward to help us along this, our spiritual path. Skilled and infinitely knowledgeable as the Indian is we shouldn’t ever be trying to head them off at the Pass!

Express yourself at the monthly Crossroads Coffee House mornings THE CROSSROADERS, as they call themselves, are a friendly group of inspired types who gather monthly to be a collective of creativity.

From its early days, these monthly fun-filled morning events have offered an outlet for creative people to express themselves through an open and interactive environment whereby they can perform live music, sing a song, dance, read poems, tell a story, present and explain their visual artworks, promote and sell their books, and so forth.

The events are the brainchild of local educator Karla Darocas who saw a need for an American-style Coffee House environment whereby a creative culture could grow and network.

“Creativity happens in isolation or in strict groups here on the Costa Blanca”, explains the Canadian-born educator who now resides in Benitachell.

“I grew up going to Coffee House events where all artists were welcome and there was no segregation. The creative vibrations were allowed to flow freely and we could network with artists from all disciplines” This crossover concept is at the root of the CrossRoads Coffee House Mornings. They take place on the last Saturday of the month, except December, July and August. They are hosted

by Buddy Paul, who is a blues music veteran and the music director for Costa Blanca Blues – a blues music appreciation social network and webzine.

Volume icon disappears

Hi Aunty, I know it should be simple, but I just do not have the knowledge to put back the music icon on my desktop. It is the speaker volume icon on the desktop that sometimes disappears and the only way I restore it, is to restore. Can you please advise how to put the icon back without having to use restore?

Many thanks, Ray Aunty says: You can restore the icon without doing a system restore, as it sounds as if the notifications on your PC are not set correctly.

Windows 7 or Windows 8: Right-click on the Taskbar (the bar at the bottom of the screen) and choose Properties.

Under the “Taskbar” tab, look for the button that says “Customize” and click it (this is to customize the notification area).

In the new window, look for “Volume” under the list of icons.

Out to the right, click the drop-down menu and choose “Show icon and notifications”.

Click OK to close that window, then OK again to close the Properties window.

PC Tune-Up download Hi Aunty, hope you can help. I received a trial offer from AVG to install their PC Tune-up, etc. It took forever to download and run. PC was supposed to run quicker but if anything the opposite seemed to be the case. I have tried to uninstall, but simply get a box asking if I really want to proceed. After clicking YES, nothing at all happens. Any ideas please? Thanks, Barry Aunty says: Yes, some of the “tune up”

software can cause more problems than they can solve - especially as some tend to run in the back ground and use valuable PC resources!

If the programs own uninstaller does not work, you can always download and try Revo Uninstaller - a great tool for uninstalling just about all traces of programs.

Stir fried chicken with broccoli and asparagus A STIR fry is a great way of using up left over ingredients and this one works very well. other ingredients could be used if you wish and the principal of cooking in a wok is always the same – use a very high heat and start with the ingredients that require the most cooking.

1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tsp sweet chilli sauce 1 tsp five spice powder A little water

2 small, boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into thin strips A thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely sliced 1 tbsp soy sauce A small head of broccoli, cut into florets 6 spears of asparagus cut into 5cm pieces Half a red pepper, deseeded and cut into strips A slice of fresh pineapple, peeled and cut into chunks (optional) A small onion, peeled and roughly sliced Vegetable oil for frying

1. Combine the sliced chicken with the soy sauce and chopped ginger and set aside to marinate.

2. Combine all the ingredients for the sauce and set aside.

3. When ready to cook, add a little oil to a wok and heat until smoking. Stir-fry the chicken with the marinade, onion and pepper for 3-4 minutes. Add the broccoli and asparagus and stir fry for 4-5 minutes before adding the pineapple.

4. Pour in the sauce and heat until bubbling. Add a little more water if the sauce is too thick. Cover with a lid and reduce the heat. Cook for a further 2 minutes. Serve immediately with plain boiled rice.

For the sauce 2 tbls tomato ketchup 1 tbls honey

Serves 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes.

Cooking time: 10-12 minutes.

Everything stops for tea

by JACK TROUGHTON ALL DAY service by members of U3A Marina Baixa at ‘Ye Olde Tea Shoppe’ kept crowds at Alfaz International Day refreshed with traditionally British fare last Sunday.

Service began at 10.30am and continued throughout a hot day until just before 6pm, when the event closed. The U3A team was kept busy serving tea and coffee and a huge selection of homemade cakes.

And once again the tea shop played its part in helping provide a “tremendous atmosphere’ “ as crowds of people were able to enjoy the variety of international food on offer.

U3A meets on the fourth Monday of the month – next month is an exception when the meeting is on 30th November. The next meeting is on Monday 26th October at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi. Doors open at 10am and close at 10.50am to allow a prompt start.

The special ‘biological market’ – featuring more than 40 stands selling local produce – is held on the first Saturday of the month. Traditionally, the star of the November event is the oil, essential to the Mediterranean diet.

Visitors will see oil being made in the square, see an exhibition of different olive oils, be able to taste the finished product, and also learn how to pickle olives. The popular market is open from 9am until 2pm and there is the opportunity to buy direct from growers and producers – as well as other attractions, including story telling for youngsters.

And shoppers can buy oils, vegetables, jams and preserves, bread, sweets, and a host of other products.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Translations and comments We finished the last lesson with some sentences which you were supposed to be looking at for this week.

No good hunting around for them now – they went in the cat’s litter tray last Tuesday. Not to worry, here they are again with accompanying comments.

Me voy a levantar temprano.

Here we have the reflexive verb “levantarse” used in the infinitive after “voy a”. The reflexive pronoun “me” has to agree with the subject “I” or “yo”. This could also be written “Voy a levantarme temprano”. Oh, I nearly forgot – it means “I’m going to get up early”.

A mi madre le gusta levantarse a las ocho.

“My mother likes getting up at eight o’clock”. Here we have the same verb in the same kind of structure, but in this case we have a few other fiddly bits caused by the use of “gustar” (lit: “to my mother it pleases her”) so we keep the reflexive verb all together out of the way (“to get herself up”). Here the particle is “se” because we are in the third person singular.

Nos vamos a ir mañana.

“We are going to go (away) tomorrow”. The reflexive verb is

“irse” – to go away. It would be equally correct to say “Vamos a irnos mañana”. ¿Prefieres ducharte o bañarte en la bañera?

“Do you prefer to have a shower or have a bath?” A rather personal question I think, please do not feel obliged to answer.

Los chicos tienen que irse temprano “The young people have to go off / leave early” Again the verb “irse”, kept together in one word, the “se” is because it is the third person plural “they” form. ¿Os habéis acordado del regalo?

Here the verb is “acordarse” (to remember) which is followed by the word “de”. The sentence is in the recent past tense “Have you (plural) remembered the present?” Notice that when a verb form is made up of two words, (e.g. habéis acordado) they are never separated, so the “os” goes in front of both.

Hay que apuntarse pronto “Hay que” is a form we haven’t mentioned before. It has

the impersonal meaning “one has to”. This form takes the third person, hence the pronoun “se”. Normally in English we would replace the word “one” for the impersonal use of “you”, so the translation is: “You have to sign up soon”. ¡Cuídate mucho, cariño!

This is an imperative or command from the verb “cuidarse” (to look after oneself). The sentence means “Look after yourself darling!” or “Take good care” or words to that effect. ¿No te das cuenta del problema?

This sentence is negative and a question all in one. “Don’t you realize the problem?” The infinitive is “darse cuenta” (to realize). The reflexive pronoun goes in front of the verb but after the word “no”.

Yo no quiero irme, me quedo aquí.

Finally “I don’t want to go, I’m staying here”. Those of us who have had children will be familiar with this sentence. “Quedarse” is “to stay”. In English we would say “I’m staying here” but in Spanish it takes the present simple tense “I stay here” – “Me quedo aquí – aquí me quedo.”

ON SUNDAY morning dog owners are invited to join a training session in Alfaz del Pi. The NGO USE-13 organisation will be hosting the event in collaboration with the sports department of Alfaz del Pi to help teach owners and their pets the basic techniques to better understand their dogs and their behaviour.

Starting at 10am in the parking area of the Frax Foundation on the beach front of Albir organisers say those

who come will learn basic techniques of ethology to better understand their pets. It is a dog training programme that works on the dogs obedience and good coexistence with their owner allowing them strengthen the bond with their pet.

This is the fifth training session to be held and it is free and open to anyone. The last such event was held in May and saw over one hundred people and eighty dogs take part.

My parents have always been weak and have never imposed any rules in our house. I am the good child, but my brother needs more handling. They’re just not strict with him, and they can‘t see that he is getting worse. I fear he will get in to real trouble one day.

By doing nothing, your parents are not helping your brother develop the essential skills of self-control and having respect for himself and others. They are enabling the bad behaviour, by not having more guidelines and consequences, which, I feel, is what your brother needs. If your Mum and Dad refuse to intervene, his bad behaviour could escalate.

Could you ask your Nan or other family members to talk to your parents and discuss ways to help your brother?

My elderly mother passed away three months ago.

My father is 83, and I was shocked to discover that he has a girlfriend, so soon after losing my mother. They don’t live together, but this woman is doing her best to alienate me, and the rest of our family. I wanted a walk in the garden with Dad, so I could talk to him alone, but she intervened and dragged him away. This is not the first incident of this kind.

See if you can arrange to see your Dad alone, and away from the house. You could voice your concerns about him seeing another woman, but ultimately it is his life. He might believe that at 83, time is running out for him to feel happy again. I do agree that it is not right that his girlfriend should be trying to keep him apart from his family. Your conversation should be about how she appears to be trying to keep him apart from his family, and not about their relationship.

ANYONE WHO has ever seen and heard Torrevieja singer songwriter Shani Ormiston perform will be wondering why she isn’t a pop superstar.

Incredible as it might seem, Shani has secured an unbelievable 7th nomination at the Music in Media awards to be held on 11th November at The Fonda Theatre, Hollywood California. The songwriter penned ‘Brave’ some years ago and the song has been nominated three years in a row in the Adult Contemporary Category.

Taken from her album ‘Once upon a Time’, her website says: ‘the second album of singer-songwriter Shani Ormiston is an album with a European dance-pop sound with 10 songs in English with lyrics full of honesty, catchy melodies and a lot of magic. This album has already won several awards and has achieved 5 nominations in the past years to the independent music awards “Hollywood Music in Media Awards”. Shani went this year to Hollywood, California, with the songs “Once Upon a Time” and “Brave”.

With this song also, “Brave”, Shani won the award for “Best Soloist Musical Work 2012-13” at the Provincial Youth Awards of Alicante Diputation.’

The Hollywood Music in Media Awards is a contest to promote emerging artists globally.

Shani began to really make a name for herself in 2008 after the release of her first album ‘This Is Me’. Eleven songs in Spanish and English achieved worldwide recognition with their ‘fresh and catchy’ feel. The single ‘How Do You Know’ reached number 1 in

Radio Roda Albacete charts and achieved airplay on other well-known local radio stations as well as further afield.

Locally Shani won the Best Female Vocalist award in 2012 and went on to represent Spain at Italy’s premier music event Biela Festival Autori e Cantautori. She has received invitations to perform with some household names along the way such as Ricky Vallance, Leo Segarra, Joe Longthorne, Christina del Valle of Amistades Peligrosas and Margharita Pirri – the Italian vocal goddess whose own composition was selected for the Armani television adverts this year. In June, Shani won second prize at The International Original Music Festival in Alicante with a mesmerising performance of one of her own compositions. The ability to write her emotive songs in both Spanish and English ensure that Shani’s light will continue to shine bright for a long time to come.

This summer Shani has been performing a series of shows at The Casino Mediterraneo, La Zenia and has recently performed at the prestigious Hotel W in Barcelona. A multinational insurance company were hosting the event at Hotel W and specifically invited Shani to perform and also to sing the theme tune to their current advertising campaign.

Shani is about to start a series of concerts at the La Manga Club Hotel and other venues throughout the Costa Blanca, no doubt also ensuring that she has cam keep her eye on the award ceremony in Hollywood as well.

Rip-roaring Bugsy Malone

by JACK TROUGHTON SUPER SOAR away success Bugsy Malone lit up the Costa Blanca like a comet as Careline Theatre’s youngsters did themselves proud on the Alcalali stage.

Song, dance, and some outstanding acting provided buckets full of entertainment, charm, drama, and most of all FUN as Careline Kids and the Careline Dance Academy put on a show to remember.

Unlike the hit film, there were no retakes but the handful of minor errors by a talented cast just added to the happy-golucky feel of a production that has taken weeks of hard work at rehearsals coupled with the more mundane demands of the education system.

The story is set in the roaring twenties and the crime filled days of Prohibition.

Fat Sam’s Grand Slam Speakeasy is the place to go for a night out and a ‘special on the rocks’.

However, there is a turf war going on.

Dandy Dan and his gang are muscling in on Fat Sam’s empire and even the club is threatened – the former hoodlum winning an arms race as his mob have the new fangled ‘spurge gun’ while Fat Sam’s gang are forced to rely on old

fashioned custard pies.

Enter hero, Bugsy Malone, a man able to live on his wits. He wins the heart of Blousey Brown, discovers the next big hope for the boxing ring, and still has time to recruit a small army of down and outs, steal the guns, and take on Dandy Dan. Director Lee Walker, choreographer Suzanna Mace, and musical director Roger Dean – some great live sounds throughout – conspired together to put on a production with more fizz than soda pop, packed with some inspired Mafia accents and terrific one liners.

Dominic Baldwin was a likeable and charismatic Bugsy while Emma Page gave a wonderfully mature performance as Blousey.

However, the performances of all the lead characters Max Davis as Fat Sam; James Harris as Dandy Dan; and their ‘broads’ Paige Keen as Tallulah and Isabelle Borger as Louella; together with Ashley Anderson as boxer Leroy; should receive a big ‘well done’.

It was a very big cast production, and from the smallest gangster to the tallest dancer, everyone deserved the flood of applause at the end and enjoyed the repeated curtain calls.

I MET up with Billie Anthony Gaddes a few days ago, as Siesta Productions and I are planning a documentary on the making of The Cucaracha Club to air locally on Viva TV.

Billie told me something else that I found quite amazing, as the interest in this locally made community made movie is shaking a few trees around the planet. With plans to make CC2 already on the table, discussions have taken place with people in St Petersburg in Russia for potential locations, as well as RTÉ and the Council for Culture in Dublin, Ireland, similarly to shoot scenes over there, and interest is also gathering momentum in both the UK and Germany.

The team at Siesta Productions and the

entire cast, both in front and behind the camera,are extremely proud of the fact that when the film completes a distribution deal they will all be part of the very first locally funded independently made movie in the history of film-making. They are now on the home strait of making this happen, and each and every one of you can help get the project over the line by attending the various fundraisers that will be taking place over the coming months.

Volunteers wanted

HELP OF Denia and the Marina Alta is hoping to recruit volunteers willing to give up a little time and help others in the Calpe and Moraira area.

The charity is currently experiencing a shortage of committed people willing to help out, whether it is making home visits, shopping, helping with transport difficulties or a number of ‘little jobs’.

Many people in the Marina Alta are aware of the “wonderful and valuable” work carried out by HELP; from interpreting and visiting services at Denia Hospital to fundraising through the teams working at the La Xara and Moraira charity shops.

However, the charity also needs more troops on the ground, especially in the two areas. Anyone interested can ring the office in La Xara on 96 642 7044 from Monday to Friday between 10am and 2pm to find out more.

Budding volunteers will be put in contact with local co-ordinators to have a chat and explain more and explain how people can help.

A charity spokesman said: “We are always in need of more volunteers – wherever you are – so however little time you can spare, we would be delighted to hear from you.”

Walking with animals

TAKING A walk on the wild side, 55 members of U3A Vall del Pop got up close to the animal world with an outing to the Bio Parc Zoo in Valencia.

The attraction opened in 2008 and despite being in the centre of Spain’s third city, offers visitors the opportunity to get up close to creatures great and small.

The park is set out in distinct areas to provide ‘natural’ setting for the animals such as wetlands, savannah, equa-

torial and Madagascar. And ingenious natural barriers allow visitors to almost rub shoulders with animals that are neither people nor camera shy. However, the huge roar of a male lion or the sudden outburst by a large ape was a quick reminder they were still very much wild.

The U3A travellers reported an educational, colourful, and enjoyable stroll through the park and a ‘thumbs up’ for an “impressive concept” allowing humans to see animals in “their world”.

Artists perform for Refugees THE REFUGEE crisis has had mixed press over the past few weeks, as everyone realises what a plight refugees are in as they try and flee war torn zones to try and make a future for themselves.

Artists for Refugees support the cause

by KEITH NICOL THOUSANDS OF people cross borders everyday and as winter sets in, the rain and cold arives, their plight gets worse by the day.

On Hispanic day, 12th October, local pubs, clubs, businesses all supported by entertainers who gave up their time for free to perform, gathered at Villamartin Plaza to stage the Artists for Refugees event.

As one of the organisers Heather noted: “The place was rocking to local acts and bands who had come to give their time and support to the Artists For Refugees cause. The whole event was set up by local bar and restaurant owner Steve Ahmed who almost single handedly orchestrated the whole event. Steve commented “ We are all refugees, all immigrants. We all come from other countries and it seems horrific to me that kids, people are dying for trying to do something we take as our right. I had to do something”. Well Steve – you did good - they were literally rocking in the aisles at Villamartin Plaza that crazy day.

Bryn Slack of The Streeters put together an excellent non-stop show of some of the Costas finest musicians – something for everyone. Surprise guests were saved till last with an impromptu session with the members of several bands all joining together on stage for a spectacular session. You missed a treat if you were not there. Tim Taylor, Meet Laaf, Backyard Session, The Streeters, Steve Plant, Los Duques, Let It Roll and Kolted rounding the night off beginning with an acoustic set then inviting two former band members – now with Monos - on stage and then inviting The Streeters up on stage too. It seemed like the plaza erupted with almost everyone on their feet.

Local artists including Art Of Corax auctioned off their canvasses, all painted for the event, in aid of the cause and the raffle seemed to go on forever with so many prizes donated. The top prize donated by La Bocana Watersports Centre in Torrevieja of a Cable Ski session went to former league footballer Glenn Jones, now living in Spain. Mariella Slack did an excellent job depriving people of their money for raffle tickets – who could resist Mariella’s charm?

There are a number of collection tins still out until the end of October and The Hen’s teeth are collecting until the end of the month, there are also a number of sponsored events running until the end of the month. All 50 Calendars kindly supplied by Andy Ormiston sold in record time and the organisers wanted to also thank him for his support.

On the day, nearly 2,000€ was raised with many of the bars in the plaza donating cash and or prizes. A final total will be announced at the end of the month. You can also still donate via the Artists For Refugees Facebook page. All the monies raised go to help charities on the ground such as MOAS – who operate boats to rescue people from the water, Save The Children who provide blankets, food and Casitas who also provide shelter, clothes and comfort.”

by JEANETTE RICE THE MAKE a wish charity day on Sunday saw the expat community help raise funds with Giving4Giving supporting the event.

The compère, Campus, kept everyone entertained throughout the afternoon as everyone dug deep into their pockets to raise a staggering 1,940€ which Garry topped up to 2,000€.

Adam Sinclair performed some tracks from his Michael Buble tribute followed by Jo Lynne with her Bette Middler melodies.

Many of the Benidorm artists turned up for the afternoon at Buddies Bar to give their time for such a wonderful cause including, Chris Knight, Sax n Strings, Denni Lee, Wendy Manfield, Scott Michael, Mark Ellis and Jessie Brooke.

It was an opportunity for all those attending to get a small glimpse of the performances that they can see around the town whilst supporting the charity.

As “Dusty Crack” glided around the room with a collection bucket Julie, the stage manager for Buddies, was working tirelessly to ensure that all of the performances went smoothly.

Julie said “we just cannot thank everyone enough for their support today, it is overwhelming and it just goes to show that buddies in Buddies work well.”

As an extra bonus one of the audience members, Dave, was a professional auctioneer and offered his talents to do the auction which helped to make the amazing total.

Garry from Giving4Giving worked tirelessly throughout the afternoon with his team of volunteers and said “what a turnout, so many people have worked so hard to make this day happen, I cannot express enough my thanks to all.”

Garry went on to say a special thank you to the Benidorm HELP organisation, who donated 500€ to buy raffle prizes which helped tremendously to make the event such a success.

The next major event is the downhill bike ride in Finestrat on 1st November and anyone interested in participating can call Garry on 603 137 697.

Volkswagen Passat OWNERS OF successful businesses keep a tight rein on absolutely every aspect to deliver the best possible bottom

THIS MINDSET is reflected in the vehicles they drive. And so sensible forward thinkers cannot help but be attracted by the new Passat four door saloon from Volkswagen. And it’s a diesel. “But what about the emissions scandal?” I hear you cry.

Yes, there are going to be software upgrades and there have been mutterings about this being detrimental to fuel economy. If, like me, you take the view that Volkswagen is probably not alone, then most diesel vehicles are going to have an issue. Also, this crisis only relates to Volkswagen’s diesel cars.

That’s a key point when worrying whether software updates will affect fuel economy. VW’s petrol engines are the most fuel efficient I have tested and I still expect their diesel engines to be the industry leaders, after this storm has blown over.

In 1.6-litre TDi Bluemotion SE Business guise the Passat is a vehicle that will return over 60mpg and can travel around 650 miles on its 70 litre tank, helped by reliable automatic stop/start.

This is arrived at during normal everyday driving, not religiously sticking to 56mph as is often the case with these figures.

VW also owns Bentley and refinements from these vehicles are creeping into the more attainable Passat. For instance, the intelligent cruise control, which, with the help of a radar, keeps the

Passat at a safe distance behind the car in front, automatically braking and accelerating as required. A similar system can be found in Volvos.

This Business edition Passat scores highly all round. Its interior is finished to a high standard and clearly much thought has gone into placement of switches and de-cluttering the dashboard.

With equipment levels that include heated front seats and even a heated steering wheel, occupants remain comfortable no matter what the climate. However, one qualm from both my wife and I is that over a long journey we ache and feel that more padding on the front seats would resolve this issue. Another surprise for me is the thin boot lid; it does not shut with a satisfying thunk, rather a tiny echo.

It’s a surprisingly large vehicle too, with a cavernous boot that swallows all of our luggage with ease. Usually no matter what vehicle we travel in we end up having to put luggage inside the car but this is not necessary in the Passat, which is really refreshing.

There is plenty of space inside, both in the rear and the front.

This size is only really noticed when negotiating tight, narrow roads where the kerb is clipped by the nearside rear tyre.

There is a useful camera for reversing and helpful bleeps alert the driver to obstacles.

Equipped with a seven speed DSG automatic gearbox it can be driven like a manual if desired or there are paddle shifts either side of the steering wheel so that you can drive like a racing driver should the mood require. Whichever you choose the Passat should not disappoint. Bearing in mind that it is only a 1.6-litre it does provide reasonable performance. Greater performance can

be achieved with the 1.9-litre engine. While it will happily potter around the town at 30mph it will burst into life if necessary and although not the quickest it is fast enough. Between 30mph and 40mph the gearbox can be a little indecisive over revving when a gear change would be better. But of course this can be overcome if the automatic box is overridden. The sound of the diesel unit can be heard from inside but this is quickly removed at speed.

Fitted with an electronic handbrake there is also a useful auto hold switch that can be turned on to counter rolling on a hill start. With no traditional ignition there is a push button start.

Satellite navigation takes the strain and stress away from finding places and makes for a more leisurely journey and the system fitted in the Passat is generally easy to use and reliable. It is not infallible and does get confused with some of the roads in Normandy, France but quickly rights itself. The offer of finding a filling station when the fuel level is too low is certainly helpful.

The Passat is also attractive. Although it is more angular than its predecessor it seems lower to the ground and more sporty, cutting a fine example in the car park. I like the electronically folding wing mirrors and the incorporated courtesy light that lights the way at night.

The difficulties at Volkswagen have highlighted that there is a trade off between power, fuel efficiency and emissions in diesel engines no matter who makes them.

Hollywood comes to Javea

JAVEA MAY not be Hollywood, although many film stars have come to the Valencia Community to make films over the years, from George Clooney to Henry Cavell and Liam Neeson.

Valencia based writer and teacher Bob Yareham has published a book called “A Set Jetters Guide to Spain: 101 Locations” and will be at the Javea Parador on 14th November speaking about some of the more than 700 English language films made in Spain, with a special emphasis on the Valencia Community.

Many Paradors have been used for films, such as Sigüenza, where Ridley Scott shot ‘1492’, or Oropesa in the province of Toledo, where Frank Sinatra stirred up guerilla trouble during ‘Pride and Passion’, Hondarribia, where Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen were

marched into exile in ‘Papillon’, and Cardona where Orson Welles turned the 9th century castle into Windsor, and where Henry IV and his son, the future Henry V argued about kingship in ‘Chimes at Midnight’.

The author has also devised an activity, for educational institutions, through which Spanish students can learn about the rich history of the International cinema industry in Spain in a combined English and History lesson.

This activity, which is now in its second year, is free to schools thanks to the collaboration of Banco Sabadell.

The event will take place in the Javea Parador on Saturday 14th November 2015 at 5pm, and admission is free.

THE ECOALTEA fair held at the weekend saw over 15,000 visitors enjoy the good weather and have a family fun day out.

The fair was officially opened by the mayor, Jaume Llinares on Saturday morning as visitors walked around and browsed the 110 stalls which included representatives from Greenpeace and Ecologists in Action. The two-day fair held more than forty workshops for adults on different topics including highlighting the relationship between health and natural food an its benefits. There were also almost thirty workshops for the children to enjoy, dedicated to crafts and games. Lectures covered topics such as organic farming and renewable energy with many of the visitors taking advantage of the opportunity to learn how to be more environmentally friendly. Nuria Collell, the Fair Coordinator said “EcoAltea has become a benchmark for the alternative fairs in Spain. EcoAltea is a wonderful opportunity to share a weekend and to find eco-alternative approaches, health, bio, food, education and personal relationships”.

Sleeping Beauty kicks off the panto season

SLEEPING BEAUTY will be keeping you awake with a few belly laughs when it arrives in the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio next month.

Sleeping Beauty is on stage for three days with their first performance being a matinee on Thursday 26th November at 3pm, followed by two evening performances on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th November at 8pm. Proceeds from ticket sales will be shared between the Alzheimer’s Association, the Cardenal Belluga theatre and other local charities.

This production of Sleeping Beauty is an original, pantomime script written by Stella Reardon and directed by Leigh Humphries. Although it is based on the traditional story, it has some hilarious scenes and comical characters such as the Gangsters, disguised as jesters who are employed to protect the Princess from the evil Maleficent, Fanny Surefire the Nanny, played by a man in Dame role and Sadie, the Lady in Waiting who speaks in rhyme. Cop car ‘snooker’

TRAFFIC POLICE in the 1970s enjoyed a bit of sport while out on patrol including ‘police car snooker’, former bobby Howard Parker told members of U3A Javea.

Howard, who is membership secretary for the association, was speaking at the group’s last general meeting. His entertaining talk was entitled ‘Funny Stories from 20 Years in the Police Force’.

Serving in the Bristol area, he said one of the favourite games was the motorised form of snooker – two patrol cars competed as the cue ball in a bid to ‘pot’ as many colours as possible.

There are 15 red balls on a snooker table – so drivers behind a red car were obviously the biggest target.

And Howard revealed games frequently came to an abrupt name when officers needed six points and

had to sink a ‘pink’. They were often snookered because pink cars were rather rare in the seventies!

A total of 47 new members have joined U3A Javea, there are now more than 1,300. Nominations from members for people wishing to stand for committee positions must be received by the meeting on 25th November.

The next general meeting is at the Parador Hotel in Javea on Wednesday 28th October. The guest speaker is popular Bay Radio presenter Bob James – an experienced radio man, it will be the first time he has attempted public speaking.

Nations gather for International Day

THE INTERNATIONAL day celebrations held in Alfaz del Pi at the weekend welcomed over 3,000 visitors.

The ceremony was opened by the mayor, Vicente Arques, with the consults of Norway and the Netherlands Jan Arild Nilsen and Eric Durlex standing by his side, as they entered the Polideportivo to see all the stands and representatives of 100 nationalities with colourful flags being waved throughout their walk.

This was the eighth International Day, an event which focuses on the integration of all cultures and nationalities including

performances throughout the afternoon from local clubs and organisations such as the Broadway Academy, based in the town, who are a local British group that sing, dance and perform.

Representatives from the Companions group, based in Albir, had a very patriotic stall decorated beautifully with Union Jacks and the Royal British Legion were also in attendance to promote the 2015 Poppy Appeal.

The event was an ideal opportunity for all nationalities to experience a little bit of each others cultures, particularly through food as there were plenty of opportunities to try different tasty dishes.

Sam’s El. Presidente have won this week’s Breakfast for 2 at Rafters, sponsored by Kate, after leaping up 74 places to No 23.

The two outstanding replays in our RTN K.O. Cup Competition took place last weekend in which Bentley Boys defeated Kate’s Team The Bairns by 28-23, while the other tie finished up with Des’s team, Parkwiganers, scraping through by a very narrow 23-21 against Terry’s Cisne Spurs City.

Javea success at El Cid

CONGRATULATIONS TO Gail Chick and Greg Sperring from Javea Green on winning the El Cid 321 with Harry Chick from BBC. In a well contested competition the successful trio won their group outright then defeated Chris Evans, Alan Phillips and Clive English in the semi-final before overcoming El Cid bowlers Anita Randall, Adrian Lambert and Derek Randall in the Final. Javea’s President Bill Barrie thanked El Cid Bowling Club for a super tournament and said they look forward to returning next year!

Close encounters of the avian kind

by ALAN PALMER WITH FORMULA 1 taking a week off, recovering from all the vodka in Sochi no doubt, motor sport interest focused on the MotoGP. Moving South from Japan, to the southern tip of Australia, the teams arrived at the magnificent Philip Island Circuit in Victoria. The twists, turns, undulations and sweeping curves, with the incredible backdrop of the blue waters of the Tasman Sea, make this one of the most spectacular venues on the MotoGP calendar, but no one in the 32,500 crowd, or the millions watching on TV, could have been prepared for what happened when the lights went out.

Andrea Iannone on the works Ducatti got the drop on the Honda of current World Champion Marc Marquez who had claimed pole position, and Yamaha´s Jorge Lorenzo on third spot. Lorenzo grabbed the lead in Turn 8, but Andrea used the massive power of the Ducatti to retake the lead going into Lap 2.

If you live beside the seaside you will know that gulls are a hazard, (as has recently been reported here in Benidorm),

but I don´t think Iannone was expecting to find one sitting in the middle of the track when he exited Turn 4. Unfortunately, for the gull, it didn´t get out of the way quick enough, and slammed into the Ducatti´s front fairing punching a large hole. While Andrea sorted out the damage to the front of his bike, Jorge Lorenzo slipped through back into the lead with Marc Marquez, who had already made contact with team mate Dani Pedrosa, holding third. Almost unnoticed in all the excitement multi World Champion Valentino Rossi, on the second works Yamaha was moving up from 7th on the grid, to take 4th position by Lap 4.

By Lap 7 Lorenzo was leading with the other three championship leaders just 1.4 seconds behind, having dropped the next group of Pedrosa, Britain´s Cal Crutchlow on the LCR Honda, and Spain´s Maverick Vinales, in his rookie season, on his Suzuki. The gap reduced to a half second by Lap 14, and three laps later the top four riders were together.

What followed can only be described as the most exciting MotoGP race most of us have ever seen, with more position

changes than the orgy scene in Caligula. On Lap 20 Lorenzo had pulled out a 1 second lead over Iannone, Marquez and Rossi, but those positions changing on virtually every corner. Going into the last lap Marquez took Iannone into the Southern Loop then Rossi did the same into Turn 4, only for Andrea to retake third position almost immediately. Marquez, meanwhile, had closed on Lorenzo, diving inside him at Turn 10, and holding on for a spectacular win, with Jorge a very close second, Iannone third, and “ The Doctor “ in fourth.

Barely a second covered the four.

For Marquez it was his 50th GP win, and he becomes the youngest rider to reach this incredible achievement. Lorenzo has closed the gap to just 11 points on Championship leader Rossi, with two races to go. Further down the field Cal Crutchlow ended up behind Dani Pedrosa and Maverick Vinales in seventh, whilst the other Brits Bradley Smith and Scott Redding were 10th and 11th respectively. Off to Sepang in Malaysia next week for MotoGP, and Austin, Texas for F1. Round Town News will bring you all the action in our next edition.

Tickets on sale for Spain v England

MONDAY WAS a busy day for Spanish national coach, Vicente del Bosque, who was in Alicante to present details of the Spain verses England friendly football match, to be played at the José Rico Pérez Stadium of Hercules on 13th November.

Unlike England and Wales, Spain does not have a national stadium and each game is played in a different venue spread across the nation. This time it’s the turn of the Southern Costa Blanca to host the International friendly match at the José Rico Pérez.

The official ceremony was chaired by the President of the Provincial Council, Cesar Sanchez and the president of the Valencian Football Federation, Vicente Muñozhe.

Tickets for the friendly match went on sale on Wednesday through the internet. After

the official ceremony, Vicente del Bosque was transferred to José Rico Pérez stadium where he checked the status of the field and was impressed by the excellent conditions thereof. Del Bosque talked for a few minutes with sporting director Dani Barroso, Hercules coach, Manolo Herrero and Javi Portillo the captain of Hercules, with whom he has a close friendship since his days at Real Madrid. Del Bosque also had the opportunity to see for himself firsthand the project regarding the Hercules Paralympic team. Some of its members were photographed with the coach, who will sponsor the section, and he was given a T-shirt from Paralympic Hercules for his son, Alvaro.

Fans wishing to attend the game can purchase their tickets in advance through the website www.rfef.es and

www.sefutbol.com. Sales at the desk of Rico Perez will not be available until November 5th. Hercules season ticket holders will be able to purchase tickets at the stadium from the 2nd to 4th November, provided that they are not exhausted.

Fans can be photographed with the trophy and possibly win free tickets for the game and merchandising items from sponsors participating in games and competitions prepared by Adidas, Iberdrola, Pelayo, Cabreiroá and Continental, sponsors of the team. The exhibition of the trophies will take place in the Plaza del Puerto de Alicante, from 11th to 13th November, open from 11am to 10pm.

Benitachell Bowls Club For the last few weeks the BBC has enjoyed the company of several touring teams from all over Britain and the above team from Plymouth were no exception.

The focus of these games is always high on entertainment and fun rather than serious competition bowling!

Long may they continue.

“Tigers” v Calpe On a more serious note a very close game for the “Tigers” at home to Calpe where the rink points were shared, but the Tigers lost out taking the extra 2 points by just 1 shot! Overall shots were 52 for and 53 against. It was down to the last end on the last 2 rinks with Calpe just squeezing through.

“Jaguars” v “Lions” A very bad day at the office for the “Jaguars” with a loss of 10 - 0 to the “Lions”. Well done you “Lions” but come on you “Jaguars”, better luck next time Winter League Report – Benitachell v San Miguel 14th Oct. The first away game of the season saw the squad making the journey south to San Miguel. All of the five teams fought hard enabling BBC to pick up five points. This week’s hard earned result was enough to secure BBC a top four spot in the league.
