Vote to stay in EU by jack troughton
PRO-EUROPEAN LABOUR MP Mike Gapes warned that Britain leaving the EU would put the right to live and work abroad in “jeopardy”. Speaking at a Labour International Conference in Alicante last Saturday, the MP for Ilford South urged delegates from across Europe to get expats to register to vote in the ballot and back the ‘remain’ campaign. He said there were up to 2.5 million British people living and working in other EU countries – Spain having the largest population of UK migrants. “The British population living in other EU countries can make a difference,” Mike said. “I hope there will still be a change to allow everyone the opportunity to vote.” The European Referendum Bill is currently before the House of Lords – and it is still hoped the franchise will be extended to enable those who have lived abroad for more than 15 years to have a voice. “Those people living in Spain, which has the largest number of people living in the EU, in Portugal, France, or Italy, or anywhere, have the most interest in the outcome but many will not be able to vote,” added Mike. “Labour International has a key role to campaign for the ‘remain’ vote and the ‘Britain Stronger in Europe Campaign’ getting people who are eligible to register to vote.” And he said: “The fact that British people can live and work in other countries in Europe is certainly an argument here because it could be in jeopardy if we are outside the EU.” Mike said expats also needed to get the message back to family and friends in the UK how there life abroad could be “damaged” – access health care, education, pensions, and buying and selling property could all be affected. From the Editor’s desk...
Hola!
ONCE AGAIN it´s time to wear a poppy with pride and take a moment to remember the brave sacrifices of servicemen and women over the years - this weekend on Remembrance Sunday and next Wednesday on Armistice Day, 11th November. The Royal British Legion across our region have distributed collection boxes and the iconic poppies and deserve to enjoy another epic year of fund raising to boost much-needed welfare funds. Last year more than 188,000€ was collected – a record. World wars shaped modern Europe and won us expats the right to migrate across borders and enjoy living and working in a different culture. And despite all its faults, the European Union has protected freedom of movement and safeguarded important rights such as access to health care, pensions and education. The British government has pledged a referendum on EU membership by the close of 2017. Those expats still with a vote, should be ready to cast it; those without a voice under the controversial 15-year rule should lobby MPs and the Lords. UK citizens living outside Britain have the most to lose if the ballot box returns a vote to leave.

Focus on kids
Friday, November 6 - Thursday, November 12 2015
by JACK TROUGHTON
EMAUS YOUNGSTERS will benefit from an annual Halloween Golf competition staged on Sunday and sponsored by Specsavers Opticas in Javea and Calpe. The annual event at the Club de Golf Ifach in Benissa was a full house for lunch and afternoon fun after a morning of sport and all proceeds went to charity Friends of the
Children of EMAUS - which raises money to support children cared for in EMAUS shelters. And Mike and Louise Stone, who own the two Specsavers stores, kick started the fund raising by presenting a cheque for 500€ to the charity’s President Carole Saunders. They also sponsored the golf, providing prizes for the winning team, second and third teams. Mike told RTN: “We are very happy to support EMAUS – we have supported the kids since 2011 by providing them with glasses; but at this time of year glasses are not so important, they need cash. “We are pleased to help in any way we can and have provided some prizes and have made a donation as well of 500€.” He said it was hoped the whole day would raise in the region of 1,500€ for Friends of the children of EMAUS. Mike Gapes MP speaking with Dalvir Singh (left) chairing the meeting Mike Gapes MP
Continued from front page DESPOTS He said he was “very sceptical, in fact, against” holding a referendum on issues of great complexity because people did not appreciate all the facts and tended to vote emotionally. “Clement Attlee described a referendum as a device for despots and dictators.” Prime Minister David Cameron had pledged a vote on membership before the end 2017after realising he was losing support to a growing UKIP, he said. “But there is a ridiculous
and artificial timetable.” Mike said in 2017 there were general elections in France and Germany – who would not welcome a British exit at the same time – while the UK held the Presidency of the EU from July that year; restricting what ministers and Civil servants could say. And he said 2016 also had complications for a ballot and Mr Cameron had ruled out holding a referendum at the same time as the London mayoral, Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly elections in 2016. “In my opinion, we would be likely to see a referendum in April, June or September 2016, hence the urgency for
expats to sign up for their vote as soon as possible.” He said the referendum would be won or lost based on how effective the campaign and turn out to vote was. “Those who are fanatical will turn out to vote. “Those fanatical about coming out of Europe will come out and vote; those angry at the Conservatives will come out and vote to punish them; those fanatical to stay in the EU will come out and vote. “But most people are not in those categories. They will come out and vote if they are made aware of the issues. This must be a broad brush campaign about themes and values but also a campaign about facts.”

Torrevieja displays Spanish football trophies
Spain won the World Cup back in 2010
by KEITH NICOL SPAIN´S FOOTBALL silverware will be on show tomorrow (Saturday 7th November) in Torrevieja and La Mata ahead of the friendly international against England. The trophies will on display from 10.00am until ‘lunch time’ in the Plaza de Encarnación Puchol de La Mata, the hamlet’s main square and from 4.00pm in the Plaza de la Constitution, opposite the Torrevieja Town Hall. The display was announced by the Councillor for Sports of Torrevieja, Pablo Samper, who has confirmed that “fans can be photographed with the trophies won by the Spanish national football team, who will play a friendly match on November 13th against England in Alicante. “We wanted to display the trophies in two very important points for the Torrevejenses,
such as La Mata and the city center. Our desire is that initiatives like this serve to bring all sports fans and followers together to see for themselves that with a lot of effort and talent, can have its reward and that with effort and work, any goal can be achieved.” The trophies have been on Display in Alicante and will return to the city after being in Torrevieja and - Mr Samper also thanked the Government of Alicante for their collaboration to bring the trophies to south. The Spanish football team won the World Cup in 2010 and three European Championships .in 1964, 2008 and 2012. It is not clear if there will be a photographer there to hold a camera for visitors, so, possibly, like 2010 when the World Cup was on tour around Spain and came to Torrevieja, people may have to ask other people in the queue to help - or bring their ´selfie stick´.
NEWS BITES TRAIN KILLS MAN LISTENING TO ‘WALKMAN’ A 25 YEAR-OLD resident of Callosa de Segura, died almost instantly last Sunday afternoon when he was hit by a train on route between Alicante and Murcia. The fatal accident occurred on the stretch of road between the villages of Callosa de Segura and Redován; close to first of these municipalities. The initial investigation by the Guardia Civil determined that this was an unfortunate accident. It seems that the man was crossing the railway tracks and did not look to see if a train was approaching. He was wearing headphones connected to an MP3 music player. The Guardia Civil suspect that the man did not hear the train coming or that he did not have enough time to get away from the tracks. The accident occurred at about 4.30pm. The young man, David, died almost instantly.
Woman falls to her death POLICE HAVE released information that a woman has died in suspicious circumstances at the lookout point in Benidorm. The woman, who was Belgian and 30 years old, died from wounds sustained during a fall onto the rocky area below the popular view point and was found with her Spanish partner by her side, who also had some injuries. Police were called to the scene at 1.30am on Wednesday morning. When they arrived the Spanish partner, aged 39, was seeking help, and the firefighters climbed down to rescue him. Police sources say that the woman’s body
was found several metres below the lookout point. The man was taken to hospital with multiple injuries under police guard. Officers have arrested the man as a precaution until the circumstances can be clarified, although the sources confirmed that it could be a case of domestic violence as the partner gave conflicting statements at the scene. Once the results of the autopsy are released, officers hope to either release the man or proceed with the arrest, but until that time he will be held under police guard at Villajoyosa Hospital, or at the local station, if he has been discharged.

Santa’s helpers make 100 stockings by JACK TROUGHTON YOUNGSTERS CARED for at EMAUS homes will each receive a homemade and very festive Christmas stocking this year thanks to a six month “labour of love”. Cazzie Millington is putting the finishing touches to 100 stockings after starting a sewing marathon in May – aided by daughter Julie and seamstress Marion Emmett. And now Friends of the Children of EMAUS will look to the public for donations of small toys, chocolates, sweets, and other goodies to fill the red felt stockings before the big day. On Sunday Cazzie will be at the Early Bird Christmas Fair at Salones Carrasco in Javea on Sunday between 11am and 5pm with some of the stockings and will be glad to accept donations of ‘stocking fillers’. She will also be raffling a delightful homemade quilt for the charity; another product of her sewing room in her El Verger home – once the third bedroom. “I started this in May and have worked a couple of hours every single day because I had to cut out 200 pieces of red felt and because the stockings are all lined, 200 pieces of lining,” she told RTN. “Marion was responsible for the decorations and most of the material came from her and she volunteered to help. “I have really enjoyed doing it – it has been a labour of love – but there is red felt everywhere and I now have a pink sewing machine from stitching so much red material.” CHOCOLATE She thanked Mick from Awnings direct for delivering 100 chocolate packages. “He did some work here in the summer, saw what I was doing and rang me and he said he had all these boxes of chocolate.”
Cazzie with Christmas stockings
Cazzie said a couple of Spanish people in the village had offered to do something and she hoped other people would donate. “I don’t expect people to give 100 things but we have to fill these stockings and just giving a few things helps!” The money from the raffle of her quilt will buy more stocking fillers and the Christmas Fair organiser Lesley Clark will buy chocolate Santa’s for them. “Lesley and I were talking earlier in the year; I had made some stockings last year for someone and she had seen them. She said “how about making some stockings? We have
80 children at the moment and we could make 100” because there are always more youngsters at Christmas,” said Cazzie. “That was a mad moment back in May and this is the result. We have used two complete rolls of red felt and nearly 15 metres of white material – the lining was free, we used people’s old curtains.” And Cazzie, who always makes presents for her family, is appealing for anyone with any spare cotton material to donate it for her quilt making. “Anyone with anything they don’t want because I will make quilts for kids – it’s what I do.”

Cocaine case in court by KEITH NICOL
A father and son accused of being part of an international cocaine smuggling plot face up to nine years in jail after the prosecution asked for a heavy sentence. The pair was arrested on 28th, January this year in Pilar do la Horadada after Guardia Civil officers noticed their pleasure boat was behaving strangely in the harbour area. The two men have been out on bail and the prosecution is asking for the penalty over their crimes against public health. The defendants must also cope with heavy fines due to the high value of the drug, estimated at 16 million Euros on the streets. The father and son, both of Spanish nationality, aged 70 and 43-years-old respectively, were arrested with 465 kilograms of the drug, whose purity was nearly 80%. They are accused of being part of an international network and officers involved also impounded the boat and two cars. In a joint operation, agents of the Guardia Civil, the National Police and the Tax Office also arrested three individuals that are alleged to have obtaining the vessels used and providing the technical means and the necessary infrastructure to transport and disguise such quantities of outlawed drugs. They were discovered on a ten metre long sailboat that was sailing off near the guard post of the Guardia Civil. The motor yacht was loaded with the second largest stash of cocaine that has ever been seized in the province. Unusual movements attracted the attention of the Guardia Civil, who were waiting for the boat when it docked in Pilar de la Horadada. On board, officers asked for the registration of the boat. After a short search they confirmed their suspicions - finding 13 bales of cocaine. After months of investigation, it was claimed detective managed to unravel the ‘modus operandi’ of the organization. The gang using pleasure boats with local crews to sail out to sea and meet larger mother ships off the coast of Alicante.
Support for Cartagena arena project “IT WAS music to our ears to hear we now have the personal support of the President of the Autonomous Community together with the rest of the regional government, for this important project for Cartagena” stated the president of the Bullfighting Forum, Francisco Vera Bullfighting Forum Cartagena has gained new and relevant support for its project to build a multipurpose arena in the city. This group of bullfighting fans has now gathered official support from the regional government which will help put in place the steps to be taken towards the construction and management of the complex. Señor Vera also referred to speeches by María Dolores Pagán and Ana Belén Castejón, respectively, during the presentation of the Cehegín Trophy for Bullfighter of the Year to Antonio Puerta. The award, given by the Bullfighting Forum, was received by the matador in a ceremony held at the Hotel Alfonso XIII, in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Noelia Arroyo. Francisco Vera recalled that in July the mayor of Cartagena, José López, had a meeting in Madrid with the entrepreneur who manages the Vistalegre Sports Palace in the capital, and the arena at Illumbe, in San Sebastián, Juan Ignacio Carbonell, to sound out his interest in the project. The City Council is considering an investment of around 15 million euros in a complex for 14,000 spectators (16,000 in the arena for concerts), with entertainment and perhaps shops. The matador Antonio Puerta is very much in favour of the project, recalling that when he was an apprentice bullfighter (a novillero) he was invited to visit the Cartagena Casino, where the Bullfighting Forum spoke of the arena project. Six years later, he is now a matador but the city still doesn’t have a bullring.

Goodbye to poppy seller Olive by JACK TROUGHTON OLIVE BATTYE, a long serving member of the Royal British Legion and Benidorm’s first Poppy Appeal collector has passed away aged 91. Every October and November - even before the Legion established branches along the Costa – Olive would be distributing poppies and collection boxes around the resort, later returning to pick up the donations. And she continued pushing a trolley loaded with boxes of poppies, collection tins, and other Poppy Appeal material until ill health forced her to retire in 2010 – when she was awarded her 30-years service badge at a ceremony in Alfaz del Pi. Pamela Dawson Tasker, of the Benidorm and District Branch of the Royal British Legion, said the funeral was held in
Villajoyosa last Friday and added many people would remember Olive for different reasons but “all will agree she as a very caring person and had a passion for the Royal British Legion”. She described the pensioner as “a Poppy Appeal collector extraordinaire” who with a handful of others pounded the streets with poppies. “She attended the first meeting of our little group at my house in Calpe with founder Major John Lambie.” BRIGADE Olive would explain how she came from a fire brigade family – together with her parents, two brothers and her sister, they all lived behind the fire station. She attributed her loyalty to the Legion after personally witnessing the charity at work. “One of my brothers was killed
in 1944 in Belgium, he was only 20. The Legion paid for my parents to visit the cemetery in Leopoldsberg in 1950.” Her loyalty to the Legion never faltered. As a member of the first Benidorm and District Branch she was still in charge of the Poppy Appeal locally and became the first Life Member, continuing to work for the cause through its second and third formation. Pamela said in 1996 Olive collected 128,450 pesetas during the appeal – last year the members of the Legion’s District North Spain raised over 188,000€ “all built on Olive’s foundation.” She said she would remember Olive “tripping off” into the sunshine pushing her trolley. “She was the stuff of which Great Britain was made; able to live happily as an integrated European and with the heart of a Legionnaire.”

BIKERS CALL FOR SAFER ROADS IN SPAIN
OVER 7,000 motorcyclists rode into Madrid on Sunday to call for safer guardrails on Spain’s roads. The vast number of motorcyclists gathered at a meeting point, next to the Real Madrid Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, to state their case to the authorities about either removing or modifying the metal guardrails on Spain’s roads, which they feel are extremely dangerous for bikers. Participants came from all over Spain to show their support as Juan Esteban, president of the “At Ground Level” bikers’ club, said members were fed up with seeing how fellow riders suffered lethal injuries or amputations on a regular basis “because of these blasted guardrails.” One rider, Alicia Sornosa, said she had ridden around the world on her motorcycle and was calling for the guardrails to be redesigned to make them safer for all riders. At the end of the protest all riders observed a minutes silence, to show their thoughts were with the bikers who had died so far this year.

UPDATE – Classroom bullfighting lessons FOLLOWING ON from the announcement that bullfighting lessons may be added to the Spanish Curriculum, thousands of Spaniards have spoken out in opposition to the plans. As reported in RTN two weeks ago, the government announced a draft proposal to create bullfighting courses as an optional subject for Spanish students aged 15-17. Campaigners quickly launched a petition on change.org and presented the documents to Spain’s Education Ministry on Wednesday. Carlos Moya Velázquez, who started the petition, said “they want to perpetuate a tradition in decline by teaching 15 year old children to torture animals, making a mockery of the already damaged reputation of the Spanish education system.” The petition, which had over 430,000 signatures, had support from around the world with an estimated 70 percent being from within Spain. The Education Ministry are still defending the plans saying that it is “cultural.”

NEWS BITES ETA SUPPORTERS TORCH BUSES EIGHT BUSES owned by Bizkabus in Bilbao were torched over the weekend by supporters of ETA,who left leaflets calling for the release of ETA prisoners. Initial reports say that the fires were started using bottles of gasoline and firecrackers which has left seven of the eight buses completely destroyed and the eighth severely damaged. Firefighters worked through the night to ensure that the damage was confined to the already alight buses, which were parked in the main Bilbao station, and that it did not spread to nearby wasteland and properties. With the minimum cost of each bus being in the region of 250,000 euros the bill is estimated to be in the region of 2 million euros. The Provincial Deputy for Transport, Vicente Reyes and the Deputy Chairman of the Provincial Council of Biscay, Unai Rementaria have agreed that violence will not conquer and that all support will be offered to ensure that those customers, who could have been affected by the loss of the buses, will not be affected by using other concessions to service the routes until new buses can be purchased. This is not the first time that buses in the area have been targeted, as in August 2014 there was a similar attack that burnt five buses, again where the release of ETA prisoners was demanded.

Indonesia burning by JEANETTE RICE
INDONESIA IS literally burning to the ground, as fire sweeps through the country, destroying everything in its’ path. The fires, which have been raging for over three weeks, have not received the same media coverage as other worldwide disasters, despite the seriousness of the situation. As the flames are destroying treasures as precious and irreplaceable as the archaeological remains being levelled by IS, Orang-utans, clouded leopards, sun
bears, gibbons, the Sumatran rhinoceros and Sumatran tiger are all amongst the threatened species being driven from much of their habitat by the flames. It has been reported that the 5,000 km length of Indonesia is an environmental catastrophe, as it is not just the trees that are burning, but the land itself. Much of the forest sits on great domes of peat and when the fires penetrate the earth, they smoulder for weeks, some-

A call came into the emergency response team at 4.33am detailing five men who were holding up the traffic on a busy road, dressed as traffic cones. When the officers arrived at the scene, they couldn’t help but chuckle at the group who were standing in front of a taxi and bus, whilst posing for photographs and seemed oblivious to the mayhem that they were causing. Alberto needs wheels by JACK TROUGHTON
BIG-HEARTED BRITS united across a social media site to help a 10-year-old disabled boy enjoy a holiday after two-and-a-half months in hospital– and now hope to get him mobile. Appeals across Javea Connect helped wheelchair bound Alberto – who suffers neuromuscular disease and is totally dependent on mum Jessica Molina Romero – have a break in Javea, away from his Denia home. However, because Jessica struggles to get Alberto in and out of her car – he is already almost as tall as mum - it was decided to continue the appeal to collect cash to buy a specially adapted second hand car to help a youngster; who always greets the world with a smile. Jessica, who is overwhelmed by offers to help her son, told RTN: “He loves music and is always a very happy boy – he never complains...everyone who meets him just adores him.” Friend and appeal organiser Theresa Rawlinson said the youngster had been very ill and the family could not afford a holiday after he had needed home nursing when he returned home earlier in the summer. “I went on to Javea Connect and asked if anyone could help this family with a disabled child who needed to escape their Denia home to relax,” she said. “And we had lots of offers from people who had seen the story and wanted to help. “The day we went to Javea to see if Alberto’s wheelchair would fit into the holiday home, I noticed how Jessica strug-
gled to get him into and out of the car and I said she needed a new car – no wonder she has a bad back.” People had already pledging small amounts of cash and with Javea Connect founder Lorraine Gosling’s support a new appeal was launched. “It is a big goal but we wanted to try.” TARGET The target is 10,000€ - so far around 3,000€ has been collected in money and plastic bottle and container tops – which are weighed and sold for cash. “The sole purpose is to get this special vehicle for mum doesn’t have to life him and Alberto can be pushed directly onto a ramp – he is getting older and bigger, so it is actually getting more difficult for Jessica,” said Theresa. She said she had appealed to various charities and associations and some had already donated, while fund raising events were being organised to boost the money raised at a special masked ball in Javea in September. Theresa added: “It was strange using social media because there are people helping who I have never met but only dealing with via Javea Connect or telephone. “We have been drawn together in solidarity to help Alberto, it is absolutely unique – a group of people who are completely unrelated and who are prepared to volunteer their services and time for this fund and for this youngster.” Charity Grant A Wish is holding money donated via PayPal. “Clean-up Benidorm” protest heading to town hall A GROUP of expats have announced details of a peaceful protest to be held at the Benidorm Town Hall on 23rd November at 10am to highlight the high crime rate that, they feel, still exists in the resort. A Facebook site “Benidorm Robberies, Muggings and the Pea Men” has been reporting for some time incidents that have occurred within the area for both residents and tourists, where it is often highlighted that even if, for example, pea men are moved on, within ten minutes they have established themselves on another street corner free to continue conning the general public. One of the organisers, Karen Cowles, said “it is time for us to show unity against the lack of
protection of our tourism, without British tourism where would many of us be?” The group is being supported by many local businesses, with one former policeman offering to ensure that all legal matters relating to the protest are correctly organised. The protest is set to be covered by local press and television media, both Spanish and English, and organisers have called on all nationalities to get behind the event to make Benidorm a safer place day or night. Organisers have even been fielding calls from national and international media regarding the event. Karen went on to say “We are asking the town hall to protect our tourism. Let’s not sit back any longer and just watch this beautiful place

We have been offered a tremendous amount of support from some very influential people in Madrid as well as from around the region, this isn’t just about expats, it’s about the whole community standing up and being heard.” Noticia’s TV Marina Baixa aired an interview with Karen on Wednesday afternoon, and have offered their support to help ensure that the event reaches as many people as possible. Anyone is welcome to attend the protest and can contact Karen or the other organisers through the Facebook page “Benidorm Robberies, Muggings and the Pea Men” where there is an online petition that can accessed.

Promotion sends Lloyd north by JACK TROUGHTON LLOYD MILEN, the Vice Consul in Alicante, has been appointed Consul-General in Barcelona and Consular Regional Manager for north-east Spain – an area taking in Catalonia, Aragon, and the Balearic Islands. Mr Milen, who takes up the post next month, will represent UK interests and lead the teams working in the British consulates in Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza, as well as British Honorary Consuls in Menorca, Tarragona, Gerona and Andorra. He moved to Spain in 2006 and was appointed to his current Alicante position in 2008. He said of the move: “I am delighted to take up
this opportunity to lead three very experienced consular teams who provide high quality assistance to the British visitors and residents that need our help. “The consulates of north-east Spain are among the busiest in the world, together handling nearly 600 serious assistance cases last year – from deaths to detentions to hospitalisations – and issuing more than 1,200 emergency passports.” The north-east consular region is visited by around 5.2 million British people every year – many to the popular destinations of Barcelona, the Catalan coast and the Balearic resorts. The area is also home to over 37,000 British

And after the British embassy announced Mr Milen’s promotion on Wednesday, Ambassador Simon Manley said: “Lloyd has been a fantastic asset to British tourists and residents in the Alicante region for the last seven years, and I am very pleased he will now be taking his skills and experience to lead the teams in north-east Spain and Andorra.” The recruitment process has started to find Mr Milen’s successor to fill the Vice Consul post in Alicante.

AFTER A long week of conflicting information, it has been reported that the Spanish airmen’s bodies have now been located within the sunken helicopter. The helicopter went down in the Atlantic Ocean off the North African coast, and was located last week, with officials initially reporting that the crewmen had been rescued, but those reports were soon retracted as the airmen were subsequently reported missing. It was then feared that the three crew had been kidnapped, however, following rescue workers’ efforts to salvage the helicopter, the bodies were found to be still inside the cockpit, 40 metres under the sea. Moroccan authorities had originally reported that the three men had been rescued by a fishing vessel and were on their way to the nearest port. After meeting with relatives of Captain José Morales Rodríguez, Lieutenant Saúl López Quesada and Sergeant Jhonander Ojeda at the Gando airbase on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria, the Defence Minister gave a brief press conference where no questions were taken. The crew from the Air Force’s 802 Squadron were flying back to the airbase from Dakar, where they were helping train Senegalese forces in air rescue missions. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy expressed his condolences to the crew’s families and colleagues via his Twitter account.

Bad weekend on the roads by JEANETTE RICE
THE WEEKEND saw tragedy on the roads, as six people lost their lives, four of whom were motorcyclists. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) announced the death toll for the Spanish roads as many were making their journeys to celebrate “All Saints Day”. On Saturday, October 31, the month ended with 93 victims, the same figure as in 2014, according to statistics from the DGT. In the year to date, until November 1, 937 deaths have been recorded on the roads. In another incident police officers had a lucky escape when attending to a family during a breakdown, as they stopped to offer assistance. Despite the officers using their hazard lights, warning triangles and their blue flashing lights a lorry failed to see the vehicle and smashed into the officers car. Fortunately no one was injured, but with the October figures having just been released, police officers are asking for everyone to be more aware whilst they are in charge of a vehicle.

MAN FALLS INTO WINE TANK RESCUE WORKERS were called to an unusual incident in Moixent, Valencia, when a man had fallen into a four metre deep wine vat. The 60 year old man had fallen over 13 feet into a concrete tank, which thankfully was empty, and sustained injuries which meant he had to be rushed to the local hospital. Fire fighters could not reach the man at first, due to safety checks being required before they could descend into the tank. Experts say that oxygen levels had to be checked to ensure that it was safe for the rescue workers to go in without their full breathing equipment. The man is now recovering at the La Ribera district hospital in Alzira, south of Valencia.

Above: La Cala Finestrat Right: Poniente beach
by JEANETTE RICE ALTHOUGH IT was forecast, the Marina Baixa area could not have prepared for the rains that fell from midnight on Sunday and through Monday morning causing severe flooding and disruption. The Poniente beach area flooded as 70 litres per square metre fell in Benidorm and huge waves flooded roads such as Vicente Llorca Alos, with seawater reaching buildings further inland than previously recorded. Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate, councillor for Benidorm said “in general the town responded well and it will be a week of emergency works to ensure that all damage has been repaired prior to this weekend’s fiestas. Not many towns can endure what we have and I praise all the emergency services and council workers for their efforts.” Power failures were reported throughout the town, as workers fought against the high winds to try and ensure that all services were repaired and maintained. In Alfaz del Pi it was reported that 60 litres per square metre fell, with access between the town centre and Albir being cut because drains could not cope with the flow of water and the new roundabout into the town also
suffered disruption. Many residents reported flooding in garages and properties. In La Cala de Finestrat between 98 and 105 litres per square metre fell, causing a river to run down the old dry river bed, resulting in the beach front being closed again. Villajoyosa did not suffer as much as its neighbours although there were reports of localised flooding and patients having difficulty in reaching the hospital. For Altea it was a similar story to Benidorm, with lightning felling trees and blocking access and five primary schools being closed due to flooding. School boards executed their yellow emergency protocol, which implemented announcements on social media and local radio of closures, although the secondary schools were not affected. In the harbour area one catamaran was completely destroyed as over 45 litres per square metre was recorded as falling between 8am and 9am. By Monday evening most of the towns had seen all flood water disappear as residents and council workers began their clean-up operations.

Space debris falls to earth
A MYSTERIOUS 20kg spherical object discovered in a field in the Murcia countryside is believed to be a visitor from outer space. The alien was discovered by two brothers on Tuesday – the shepherds were out tending their flocks when they stumbled on the grey-coloured sphere that appeared to resemble, well, nothing on earth. Officers of the Guardia Civil were called to the area near Mula and said it could be a piece of space ´rubbish´ and fallen from a rocket or satellite. It measured around a metre in diameter and appeared to be wrapped in a black insulating material. An emergency protocol for nuclear, radiological, bacterial and chemical threats was immediately put into force; with personnel putting on had suits to inspect the object – according to local reports officials at the scene concluded the sphere had dropped from the sky. And it was later confirmed the object was an aerospace industry device; possibly an auxiliary fuel tanks from a satellite or rocket. It is not the first time space debris has been found on earth. Similar objects have been discovered in Australia and Brazil. By the time it was identified, brothers Francisco and Juan del Amo had recruited their brother-in-law to help with some internet research of their own and former their own conclusions. They believe it was a composite pressure vessel and possibly from a space station. They said: These objects are made from such resilient materials that they can survive Earth re-entry, even catastrophic explosions, nearly intact.” The authorities in Murcia later tested for increased radioactivity in the immediate area but tests proved negative for higher than normal emissions.

Balcon de Finestrat REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY redevelopment NEWS BITES
TEULADA MORAIRA Town Hall has organised a special Remembrance Day Service on Wednesday 11th November; all are welcome to attend.
Park in Balcon de Finestrat
by JEANETTE RICE JUAN FRANCISCO, mayor for Finestrat has visited the Balcon de Finestrat area of the town to inspect the progress of the recent projects. Amongst the improvements to the redevelopment that he was able to see were the completion of tarmacking on several of the main avenues, footpaths now connecting via various stairways, the improvement in the power lines and installation of water
and telephone cables. One of the substantial improvements was the completion of the playgrounds which are specifically aimed at children under 3 years old, with another which caters for those between 3 and 7 years old. A council spokesperson said “we have improved street lighting by installing more sustainable LED technology from an environmental point of view. We have also set up a parking at the
entrance to the school to improve circulation and increase the safety of schoolchildren. And we are ending the green areas with a pedestrian path that will lead the walk through this residential area. We have made substantial improvements in essential services (water, sanitation, telephone, power) and in regard to the most visible part of the redevelopment have made available gardens, playgrounds and the first pet park in Finestrat.”
The event is being staged at 5pm at the Nuestra Senora de Los Desamparados Church in Moraira at 5pm. The ceremony will be led by Father Marcus Ronchetti, Senior Chaplain of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy, and the popular Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir has agreed to take part. It is an opportunity for people of all faiths to come together to remember and honour the fallen who sacrificed their lives for others.

Don Pancho hotel closes for reform by JEANETTE RICE ON SATURDAY the hotel Don Pancho, Benidorm, closed its doors for what has been described as extensive reforms, the first time in 43 years that the hotel will have been closed for more than a month. The hotel first opened its doors on 13th May 1972 and at the time was the only four star hotel in Benidorm soon creating a name for itself as a luxury hotel not just within the town but also the province of Alicante. The hotel is an 18,000 square metre family run business that has entertained repeat customers year after year with the nostalgic charm of nothing really changing with the interior design and works of art. The extensive reforms will see many of the works of art, souvenirs, furniture, lamps, curtains and even tableware up for sale, with buyers being invited last week to make appointments to view the items on sale. Francisco Quiles, the CEO of the hotel company, said that “after the reforms the Don Pancho will have new décor with the style, materials and look of 2016 whilst maintaining its Aztec identity.” Many loyal customers have voiced their upset about the coming changes, having booked, in some cases, the same room year after year, but the hotel is hopeful that when these customers return they will love and embrace the changes. The last reform of the hotel occurred three years ago when the reception area was remodelled, closing the hotel for a short period of time. The newly announced closure will see the Don Pancho closed until next spring when it is hoped all 500 beds will again be fully booked.

British Corner Shop reveals the top British products missed by Ex-pats in Spain at Christmas THE ONLINE retailer BritishCornerShop. co.uk has been exporting boxes of British happiness to expats in Spain (and all over the world) for more than 15 years. During that time, the company has gleaned a thorough idea of what its customers crave during the festive season. Mark Callaghan, the company’s Managing Director, said: “The product our Spanish customers desire the most at Christmas is Walkers Luxury Mincemeat Pies! They were by far the best selling product in December last year.” As so much of the Christmas celebrations are based around eating and drinking, it comes as no surprise that there were many traditional British Christmas products that made the list. Seeing the large volume of orders to Spain of certain products truly show what expats miss during Christmas and what is hard to get hold of when abroad - many don’t realise what they will miss at this time of year until they begin browsing the stores in preparation for the big day. Mark said: “Understandably, quite a few Christmas classics made the top-ten list in Spain. Paxo Sage and Onion Stuffing, Bisto Gravy Granules and traditional chocolate selection boxes are all in the top ten in the run up to the 25th.” But amongst these winter favourites, there is also a sprinkling of classic day-to-day products all Brits love. Warburtons Crumpets, Heinz Beans and Bran-
ston Pickle all retain their place in the list of most popular items. Expats from around the world have the opportunity to peruse over 11,000 British products at BritishCornershop.co.uk, and have their items shipped to them anywhere in the world, be that Spain, Sri Lanka or Samoa. Every box is expertly hand-packed by a member of the British Corner Shop team, and their fantastic service of customers, giving
them an overall excellent rating of 9.3 on TrustPilot. With the festive season fast approaching, BritishCornerShop.co.uk is getting ready for the Christmas rush. “We’re expecting a busy season, but our experience over the last decade has prepared us for pretty much anything”, said Mark. “We’re all a team, from the warehouse staff to the marketing department, and we all get stuck in if need be!”

Fighting the mosquito ‘plague’ by jack troughton Marina Alta residents are again being urged to take simple steps to help combat the growing problem of tiger mosquitoes. Teulada Moraira Town Hall is the latest local authority attempting to recruit people’s help with a campaign to control the “plagues” of the insect that has taken up residence in the area over the last two years. The council maintains the best way of fighting the black and white striped mosquito is eliminating areas where the insect lays its eggs and where larva hatch. The town hall recommends residents take action on their property especially around swimming pools and in gardens. The mosquitoes need water and damp areas to survive and breed. People are asked to empty all outside containers which can hold water such as: toys, ashtrays, vases, buckets, cans, plates underneath flower pots, pets bowls and paddling pools at least twice a week – alternatively, place them face down, or remove them from areas they can be filled by rain. They should also avoid water accumulation in drainage areas or guttering and fill in holes in the ground or in tree trunks. Those with swimming pools should maintain water quality with chlorine and prevent water becoming stagnant – and if possible cover pools not in use. And anyone discovering a problem is advised to treat areas with available larvicide products or call in specialist pest control firms to treat areas “susceptible” to a proliferation of mosquitoes. Further information is available from the public health website www.sp.san.gva.es.
Town Halls announce book funding MANY OF the local town halls have been announcing, over the past few weeks, their programme for the free provision of textbooks and curriculum materials. La Nucia, one of the towns, has announced that 107,989€ has been allocated to assist pupils for the 2015/2016 school year, amounting to 66.66€ per pupil. Parents have from 1st December until 18th December to apply for their grants which, with additional funding from the Generalitat Valencia, can mean a pupil may be funded up to 200€. Parents will need to provide invoices for books that they have purchased, and register with the town hall, to be eligible for any refunds. All the local town hall websites have information relating to the specific requirements that each authority requires to enable book funding, but as deadlines are usually quite specific, it is worth ensuring that you do have all the relevant documents ready to submit.
Red faced organisers’ translation error A TOWN in Galicia, North Western Spain, has apologised to the public following a Google translation faux pas. The town, As Pontes, holds an annual festival to celebrate their local green vegetable, which is not dissimilar to spinach, called rapini. It would appear that Google translated the “Grelo Festival” which is Galician, as Portuguese and then into Spanish. Some words do not translate well with many variations and slang from other languages and dialects requiring close scrutiny before being used, but this clearly did not happen with the town hall website administration. This, unfortunately, meant that on a Google search, the quiet, calm and peaceful festival had now become “clitoris”, with the town hall stating as the description of
the festival “the clitoris is one of the typical products of Galician cuisine,” on their Castilian Spanish version of the town hall’s website. Monte Garcia, a town hall spokesperson said “this is a very serious mistake on the part of Google and we are considering making an official complaint to ensure that the Galician language does not experience such distasteful treatment in the future.”
Skeletal mare dies two days after rescue CENTRE CO-FOUNDERS Sue and Rod Weeding were contacted about a pregnant mare in the Valencia area. After a coordinated effort between the Valencia and Guardamar branches of Spain’s animal welfare unit, Seprona, Rod was officially given permission to seize the horse, as well as a malnourished donkey also on the property. “The mare had been left to forage rubbish on a piece of land. She was absolutely skeletal and very weak but she survived the three-hour drive back to the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales,” Sue said. “Two days later, she lay down and couldn’t get up, she was just too weak. We tried everything we could but sadly she passed away. It’s just heartbreaking”. “The mare was called Betty, which is not a Spanish name, so we suspect she was given to the Valencian man by some non- Spanish people who were moving back home. People who don’t want to live in Spain anymore often just give away their donkeys and horses to anyone who will take them. These are often unscrupulous people.” The rescue centre`s vet Dorothea has now completed a veterinary report at the request
of Seprona officials, who are pushing to prosecute the Spanish owner. “Our work is starting to have an impact across Spain. People are going to the police and the police are acting, even connecting with our local officers to allow us to legally get involved.” Sue said. “Most police officers don’t want to look the other way, they want to help these animals but they have to have somewhere to home them. That’s why our work is so important, but it is still mainly Rod and I who are doing everything, the rescues, overseeing our eight charity stores, and doing the feeds and medications for 97 horses, ponies and donkeys every morn-

The event, which starts at 11pm on the Saturday night runs through until 6am on the Sunday and will be the first time the event has been held in the town. Presented by Peter Barber and Vicente Sanz, councillors for Altea youth, with Sebastian Gomez a member of the association organising the event details were released of how participants will need to survive through the night in the Altea streets to stand a chance of winning the game. Organisers have arranged for access to private buildings to increase the thrill of the game with an anticipated 850 com-
petitors and 150 organisers. The Last Zombie day requires players to survive overnight in Altea to be evacuated the next morning. All the survivors will begin the game with an identification token (GREEN) meaning infected, do not run, or (RED), viral zombies, runners, (in yellow) and members of the organization and game characters to interact with will be purple. organization of the event said that ‘’ there will be more than 30 tests to overcome throughout the night. The goal of the game is that the survivors are not captured by zombies.” To register to take part you can go to www.lastdayzombie.com.
Remembrance Sunday 8th November
On this day there will be a re-instating of the playing of The Last Post and The Rouse at 11 am at the Mirador on the South side of La Cumbre del Sol looking over Moraira to the sea. This ceremony was inaugurated some years ago by Chris Humphries/Dale who played a lonely tribute on his trumpet, the number of people wishing to pay their respects grew over the years. Sadly, Chris well-known in the area for his country music show, passed away last year after a protracted illness. So, on Sunday 8th November, there will be a meeting again to honour the memory of the servicemen and women of two World Wars and perhaps wish a passing ‘God speed’ to Chris. Frank Abrams will be doing the bugle calls on his alto saxophone. All are very welcome. Please join them.

Let your voice be heard READERS MAY like to know that, if they have a keen interest in rock concerts, 10k runs and council organised trips to football matches, then the Urbanisation La Marina is for them.
If however readers want to have their rubbish and recycling bins emptied, roads swept and cleaned (even repaired), weeds and overhanging trees removed from the pavements, graffiti cleaned off, road safety bollards and speed bumps repaired/replaced, street lighting turned on, exposed electricity cables removed, then the Urbanisation La Marina is not for them. The level of public service has been in decline for 2 to 3 years but it has reduced significantly in the past year. It is noticeable how the urbanisation which falls under the council of San Fulgencio is the poor relation to the main town of San Fulgencio despite the majority of SUMA revenue coming from the urbanisation. If, like me, residents of the urbanisation are frustrated by the lack of interest and effort from the council then I would urge them to voice their opinion to the council. The more their voices are heard the more likely the council will act. Len Allen, Urb. La Marina, San Fulgencio
Cyclists’ Law ELAINE GONZALES was in part correct. I contacted The Guardia Civil asking if traffic laws related to cyclists, their response was a big yes. I asked if they were breaking the law by riding on footpaths and riding the wrong way on one way roads; again a big yes. I was recently almost
knocked down by female cyclist doing just that. I pointed out she was breaking the law and she said “get a life”. Does Elaine suggest, if a motorist is hit by an offending cyclist, that the motorist is responsible? wonder. I rode a bicycle for many years to school and to work. Philip Bradley.
Are the disabled some form of joke? I WISH to raise a concern about the attitude of the presumed owner of a store.
Yesterday morning my father and I decided to take a ride to the store. My father is disabled and suffers from breathing problems having had part of his lung removed some years ago. My wife, who is also disabled, did not come with us, so, to keep up with my father, who was on his mobility scooter, I decided to use her mobility scooter as it is some distance to the shop. As we pulled in front of the shop I noticed two ladies standing outside. As I was turning off the power to the scooter I heard one saying to the other, “Watch these get off and walk normally”. I immediately walked to them stating that their comments were quite insulting, and although it was the case for me, my father is disabled. She accused me of being aggressive and that it was meant to be “funny”. Maybe, to her, disabled people are some form of joke. I found it completely offensive. One of the ladies stood in the doorway and said that she did not like aggressive people and I wasn’t allowed in the shop. I walked away from the doorway and did call her a name. Whether she heard or not I don’t know, but it was just a reference to a rear part of our anatomy! Graham Eyre, Torretas, Torrevieja.

Chris’s Corner LAST WEEK I was accused of being stand-offish by a matronly reader because I totally ignored her when she spoke to me – thought I was getting too big for my Boots & Budgie Smugglers.
Not guilty, it’s because I’m Mutt & Jeff. Now I find the perpetrator of my disability is suing various organisations for £750,000- yes Ritchie Blackmore “I DO MEAN YOU!” - sorry I was shouting, didn’t realise. Yes Rockin’ Richie ex-lead guitarist with Deep Purple is out to get back-dated royalties for tunes like Black Night & Smoke On The Water some 40 years plus after the event -whilst I have to struggle on earning-less & ear-less. How did this iniquitous situation occur I hear the cry? - or not in my case. We need to travel back to late 60’s and venture into the venue where an unknown Swedish acronym won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 reminding us of a Belgian bloodbath. This is where Rock Gods Deep Purple were shaking the foundations. We saw some great bands there. Favourite? The Who, in their pomp (Moon the Loon lived up to the sobriquet). About half way through Deep Purple’s set Richie boy had to take a break backstage for medicinal reasons, I think he had a jolly bad Columbian cold because he was sniffing like a Bloodhound on heat. So he laid his guitar on the deck which immediately started feeding back – VERY LOUD!-it was chaos & cacophony on steroids -it sounded like the banshee wailing of how I imagine a Janet Street-Porter/Nicki Minaj duet would turn out (Just dwell on that scenario for a brief moment if you dare). However deep joy for this headbanger bearing in mind these were the dance hall days and you could get right up to the stage and put your head inside the highly amplified speakers - hence- I’M AS DEAF AS A POLITICIAN UNDER PRESSURE!” Sorry shouting again, and it’s all the Boy Blackmore’s fault – I want a cut of that three-quarters of a million but unless I decide to take up synchronised swimming, I’ll not hold my breath. If you fancy 60’s/70’s tunes give Bigfm a try Monday/Wednesday/Friday 68pm on 89.9 & 99.8 or on-line www.bigfm.org - I’ll play you a flare flapping favourite or two.

Benidorm and Alfaz del Pi unite to clean up Sierra Gelada by JACK TROUGHTON
THE TOWN halls of Benidorm and Alfaz del Pi have united to try and clean up the rural footpaths that have become littered and used as dumping grounds. The paths in the foothills of the natural park area are cluttered with rubbish ranging from sofas, kitchens and televisions to broken furniture and general household waste, making what should be a beauty spot a refuse dump. Visitors who wish to walk, run or cycle in the area are increasingly finding the natural habitat spoilt and plagued by mosquitos and vermin which are attracted by the smell. The two towns have decided that the best plan of action is to promote the area and increase the numbers that visit, in the hope that it will make it more difficult for the fly tippers not to be seen. Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate, environment councillor for Benidorm said that “the idea is that a greater number of people using these trails would be a deterrent role for those who throw their surplus ignoring the damage that it is doing to the environment.” Vicente Soler, councillor for Alfaz del Pi stressed that this project would also link the Albir lighthouse with the Rincon de Loix area.

CALLS TO REOPEN FINESTRAT CINEMA BUILDING THE PSOE party in Finestrat is asking for facilities that could be used within the old cinema building to be reopened. Four years ago the town council of Finestrat allocated 353,000 euros for the reformation of the building, to change the area into classrooms and make it a municipal centre in which young people could undertake projects, however nothing has yet been done to implement the changes.

FOLLOWING ON from last week’s article, we at White Baos Lawyers are proud to be able to say that up to now, we have won 100% of our claims on behalf of our clients against Bankia, for their IPO and shares sale in 2011.
IT IS very gratifying to see that the Spanish courts understand that in the IPO of Bankia, the information provided by this entity to potential investors, presenting themselves as a solvent bank with significant profits and good future expectations, did not correspond with the reality of BFA-Bankia. This inaccurate information led clients to buy shares of Bankia by mistake, had they known the reality of Bankia’s situation, they would never have invested. Here at White Baos, in line with our commitment to defending the rights of consumers, and especially the rights and interests of the expatriate community in Spain, we want to help those affected to claim against Bankia, with the lowest possible risk and cost, and the greatest guarantee of success. We want to help: Small investors (less than 2000 €)¸ to claim without charge against Bankia. As noted last week, by law in claims for less than 2,000 €, it is not mandatory to use a Lawyer or procurator, therefore, we would claim in your name, and only charge our fees if you win . If you lose, you would still not have any costs, since you would not have to pay Bankia nor our fees. It is a claim without risk therefore. Remaining investors (from 2001 € to 250,000 €), we would only charge fees if you win the procedure, and these fees would be recovered from Bankia. Therefore, if you win, you will recover the money invested, plus interest, and Bankia must pay your lawyers and solicitors. If you lose (which is possible, but it has not happened to us), you will not have to pay us, but you may be asked to pay the costs of the
lawyers of Bankia. Therefore, all investors in shares of Bankia, should know: That there is still time to claim. That according to official statistics the vast majority of claims have been ruled in favor of consumers. That if you invested € 2,000 or less, you can claim without any risk, even if you lose, it will not cost
you anything. That if you invested more than € 2,000, White Baos offers reclaim facilities, and we will not charge you unless you win. We have won 100% of our claims against Bankia. Therefore, if you invested in shares of Bankia, which now have virtually no value, we can help you get your money back plus interest, so contact us.

The only thing certain in Life is death and Taxes’ DOT COM boom, dot com bust! High Interest rates low interest rates, Strong Euro, weak Euro.
WHAT WAS a good thing last year is the worst thing this year. ‘The only thing certain in Life is death and Taxes’ quote made famous by Benjamin Franklin 1789 The exact same can be said of your investments if you do not review them and keep your portfolios up to date. What seemed like a great idea at the time may not be today. Many investors put their money away, choose funds with a 1 ,3 or 5 year time frame and then forget about them and put the documents in the draw only to be totally shocked at the end of the term when their investments have not met with their expectations, or at worst the fund has been suspended. The best adviser in the world cannot claim to get it right all the time, but what they can do is make sure their clients are seen on a regular basis, updated with the performance of their funds and make the relevant changes to ensure their investments and are suitable in the current economic climate and, more importantly, continue to meet with your expectations. I make it my number one priority to be always accessible to my clients and make sure I speak to each one on a regular basis to review the investments we have entered into. Do you receive a similar service? In this current uncertain economic climate I would urge you to contact your investment adviser today and arrange a review of your own portfolio. The more people I speak to, the more I get the impression that they receive no on-going support/advice for the investments they hold. Do you feel like this? If you feel like this and/or would just like a helping hand to review what you have, why not contact me and I will sit down and go through your portfolio with you. I have been a fully Qualified Financial Adviser for 28 years and also understand the needs of ex-pats and the rules that apply to ex British living and retiring in Spain so if you need to talk through your own situation then please feel free to call me and we can have a no obligation discussion about the best way forward for your Investments. If you have paid for a domain name for your website then you own it – right?
business
34
That is the theory, however many unsuspecting business people in fact don’t understand how the domain name ownership process works and they get someone else to register their domain name and don’t check to make sure that the domain registration was put in their name.
signer to court under the “intellectual property law” process and get the domain name back. However, here in Spain, if the website designer doesn’t want to give it back, even though it is yours and you paid for it – it is basically impossible to get the domain name back. Sad but true!.
Owning a domain name, which is your website’s name, is really much like owning a car. It has to be registered under the name of the owner. For business people, a domain name becomes a legal asset of your company. When you sell your company, the domain name goes with it. After printing flyers and business cards, many people find out that they in fact don’t owe their domain name, but the registration was put in the name of the person they trusted to register it for them, often a website designer. This is an illegal process, but sadly it happens all the time. Corrupt website designers will often take advantage of the naivety of a client and register that clients’ domain name in their own name. Then they will go ahead and design the website and get paid. However, when the client has a falling out with the website designer and wants to move his/her website to another provider or learn how to work on his/her website alone, the client finds out that they don’t own their own domain name – even though they paid for it.
How do you check to see if you indeed own your own domain name? Depending on where the domain name was registered, you can try these websites to search for your ownership entitlements. www.WhoIs.net – for your most popular domains like .com, .net, .org. For Spanish registrations you can go to www.nic.es however, I find that www.GoDaddy.com/Whois has a better presentation and in English.
Now what? The domain name (website name) is on all your business cards and marketing advertising? In the USA, it is easy enough to take a website de-
What to do once you find out that the domain you bought is not registered in your name? You will need to sign up to a different registration company and file for a “domain registration transfer”. Normally, the new registration company will charge a fee to start this legal process of transferring the domain and changing the name servers and registration names. It seems a shame to have to pay this fee, when you have already paid for the domain name in the first place. Once this fee is paid, a legal document is sent to the original person who registered the domain name on your behalf. Then, here comes the snag – if that corrupt website developer who basically stole
your domain name doesn’t want to give it up – then your domain transfer will not be completed and you will be screwed. But, if they do sign the legal paperwork then you have a good chance to get it back. Next, comes part two of the process. Both parties, the releasing owner and you as the new owner, have to fill out another legal form and submit a photocopy of your passport to the new registration company. Again, if all this process goes well, you will get your domain name back. In conclusion, your best solution is to be prepared and know the facts before you get involved with a website designer and make sure that your domain name is registered in your name. Learn how to buy your own domain names from reliable registration companies who have long track records like GoDaddy.com. If you need help with registering your own domain, you can come to my office and we can go through the process together

Help for jumbo problem by jack troughton
WILDLIFE LOVERS have raised over 8,200€ to help fight the elephant and rhino poaching crisis that threatens the extinction of two species of majestic animals. Weeks of fund-raising ended with a Gala Dinner at the Parador Hotel in Javea when 113 supporters gathered to enjoy a social occasion and raise funds to support three wildlife organisations. The gala event was the fifth in a series of five in the Marina Alta town and included a short presentation to explain the gravity of the poaching epidemic, raffle and an auction – lots including an oil painting by Rosa Mansell and an elephant sculpture by local artist Toni Mari. The first three fund-raising initiatives were the Spanish premiere screenings of the film ‘When Giants Fall’, shown to full-houses at the Javea Players Studio theatre in September. And on Sunday 4th October about 250 people gathered in Javea to join supporters in 133 locations around the world in a Global March for Elephants and Rhinos – demanding the end for the ivory and rhino horn trade. In the lead up to the march, organisers gave presentations at local school outlining the threat to wildlife – many of the youngsters later stepping out on the march, being sponsored to raise additional funds. The money will be shared between three wildlife organisations: the PAMS Foundation in Tanzania, which supports rangers fighting poaching; Wild Life Direct, Kenya, which fights corruption and supports jurisdiction in courts against poachers; and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Kenya, which runs an elephant orphanage and release programme. Donations can still be made via www.justgiving.com/GMFERJAVEA2015. Petitions have also been sent to the American and Chinese ambassadors in Madrid, and the six campaign organisers have also set up an on-line petition to Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta – it has attracted 2,693 signatures to date – and can be found at www.tinyurlcom/qbrt3y8. More information about the Javea initiative can be found at www.facebook.com/gmferjavea.

Everything stops for tea by JACK TROUGHTON NO ONE is a stranger when they call at the door of May Archer – they are soon sat down with a cuppa, a biscuit, and a good helping of the world through her eyes.
MAY IS inherently kind, a touch forgetful, feels a close relationship with her favourite soap characters, and has a wealth of stories about her late husband and her neighbours. Javea Players introduce May to audiences this month at the Union Musical, Gata de Gorgos, when the group unveils the hilarious comedy ‘A Foot in the Door’. And the laughs come with a cup of tea and a digestive when some larger than life characters are invited into May’s inner sanctum and a tea party to remember. The travelling salesmen and women bravely attempt to close a deal but are soon embroiled in tales of the unexpected. A Foot in the Door is on stage every night from Monday 16th November to Friday 20th November at 8pm. Tickets are 12€ and can be reserved by calling 96 579 4937 or email boxoffice@gmail.com.

Bulbs add beauty to any garden or apartment terrace
by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
THERE ARE a large number of varieties of bulbous plants (which includes bulbs, corms and rhizomes) which can grow well, even spectacularly, in Spanish gardens. There are bulbs for all seasons but most are best planted in the autumn. However the choice is often very limited in Spanish garden centres or horticultural shops. However one can order bulbs from international bulb catalogues or buy when travelling. WHY DO WE RAVE ABOUT BULBS? There are bulbs for all seasons, some being very exotic. Since they grow well in pots as well as the open garden they are useful for covered terraces, courtyard patio, apartment/penthouse terrace, rockeries, flower beds or as natural plantings under trees and deciduous shrubs. Many will come up year after year and multiply. They can have a dramatic effect as individual bulbs or as massed plantings. Once planted in the garden they need little care. They are therefore of special interest to absentee gardeners. WHAT ARE THE CHOICES? Consider the following for starters.
For late winter and spring. The most reliable in the garden are anemones, grape hyacinths, freesias, flag irises, Dutch and Spanish irises and miniature irises. Mass planted patches of each can give weeks of colour to flower beds and rockeries. Flag irises are particularly useful for semi shaded corners where they can be left to multiply year after year. The others are best in full sun. For pots try clivias, anemones, tulips, rananculus, and exotic species of daffodils and amaryllis and for window boxes grape hyacinths and late planted full sized hyacinths. If you live in woodlands a spring carpet of naturalised daffodils can be spectacular. Equally if on a mountain top miniature jonquils and species tulips can brighten up otherwise barren rocky areas. Unfortunately slugs often eat tulip bulbs during the summer if planted in the open garden For late spring and summer. Summer bulb displays can be not only colourful but exotic.
For us nothing can beat; a patch or pots of tall waving blue agapanthus, tall multi or single flowered specimen lilies, a pot or patch of Peruvian lilies, alstroemerias. a collection of interestingly headed alliums. tall vivid coloured crocosmia (montbretia) in a mixed bed or growing as a clump through stone chippings. Patches of fritillaries brightening up glades in pine tree gardens. Cannas can be a success but they need copious watering to stimulate flowers. If you are a gladioli fan try the more dainty species rather than the large headed varieties. We believe that they fit better into Spanish gardens. If you like to grow the larger flowered varieties for cutting we suggest that you grow a line alongside the vegetable patch. For the autumn. Autumn flowering crocuses, the saffron/azafran varieties and the lily related colchicums are the most typical. For Christmas, winter and early spring. In the garden patches of crocuses and daffodils can even be out for Christmas and the New Year if planted early in warm areas. In the mountains they will be later. Freesias and tulips will follow. For the covered terrace and patio plant up pots of amaryllis, cyclamens, hyacinths, grape hyacinths and daffodils.
SOME SUCCESS FACTORS. Plant in well draining soil or compost in pots. Crushed seashells in a peat and leaf mould mix for pots and a well draining high in humus soil in the garden. Within the garden improve the drainage under each bulb by placing course sand, grit or crushed seashells at the bottom of planting holes. Remember where you have planted bulbs in mixed beds so that you do not slice them in half or spike them when working the bed during the bulbs dormant season. If forgetful clearly mark with a weatherproof label. If the weather is very dry, water prior to and during the flowering period to stimulate and prolong flowering. Give naturalised bulb areas a top dressing of bone meal or other organic fertilizer in the autumn. Don’t be too hasty to cut back stems and leaves after flowering. Let them dry back naturally, the sap draining back into the bulb to stimulate growth for next year. Cut back when the leaves have become brown and are becoming easy to pull off. Buy healthy non diseased bulbs. Plant up bulbs as soon as you receive them so that they do not dry out. They will have been stored by the grower under ideal conditions. This is not always maintained in retail nurseries so purchase as soon as they have bulbs on display. The final remnants in the boxes two or three months later may not be good buys.

´KEEPING UP with The Kardashians´ is a Reality show on USTV that’s somehow slipped the net of all things decent. Amazingly however, there´s an App available that blocks them ever irritating you again, and they´re moving like hot cakes. I spend most of my preparation time trying to avoid all the inane pap about these numbnuts, but I am now seriously happy to tell you that we can all now simply hit a button and they´re gone. The Kardashian Filter, available for free from Google’s Chrome Web Store.
RUSSELL BRAND has confirmed he´s still an old saddo after he announced he´s edited footage that was filmed during his 14 month marriage to Katy Perry into a documentary. It’s called ‘Brand: The Second Coming’ which is naff enough, but the saddo part is that he´s left in a really snide attack on Katy saying “I’m associated with the very thing I detest! Vapid! Vacuous! Plastic! Constructed! Mindless Celebrity! Oh, who’s he? He’s married to Katy Perry!” You really need to look in the mirror mate!
Not just a Bond Girl but a golden one!
AT U2´S gig at O2 arena in London last weekend Bono suddenly announced “I’d like to bring out one of my heroes to help us with this next song ‘Will you welcome to the stage Noel Gallagher!” ALRIGHT! Noel then joined the band in ´I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For´ and All You Need Is Love. I picked up on this story after seeing a pic of Noel sitting reading a mag on the Tube. Yes indeed folks! He took the London Tube both to and from his 2 songs with U2! Just like going to the office and back! ALTHOUGH JIMI Hendrix led a heavy drug and alcohol fuelled lifestyle, he was loved by many, and I personally have never heard a bad word said about the guy. The Seattle born musician forged quite a career in the UK, and on the back of all his 5 albums all going multi-platinum, the house he lived in for a year in Mayfair is to open to the public. A ´English Heritage´ blue plaque has been posted on the wall at 23 Brook Street, the first ever given to a pop star. Tickets for the ´Hendrix Flat´ went on sale last Monday. It will open in February 2016. Hurrah!
ON 12th January Shirley Eaton will reach the ripe old age of 79, and believe it or not she was part of a recent photo shoot to recreate her famous pic for the film Goldfinger in 1964 that featured on the cover of Life magazine. Shirley played arch villain Auric Goldfinger’s secretary Jill Masterson who was murdered by being painted gold after being caught getting up close and friendly with 007, played by Sean Connery. These arch villains don’t mess about do they! The Daily Mail commissioned the new pics, and it was quite some shoot with Shirley having to spend two hours having gold pigment powder painted on her face, arms and torso. “It was fun” she said “and a challenge! I like challenges! And I did it for the older ladies!” she said spritely. The reason behind Shirley calling it ´a challenge, ´ is that it’s quite something getting yourself painted gold. She explained. “I had to lay still for 2 hours, as despite so many advances in makeup it took about the same amount of time to paint me as it did then,” she said proudly, “the original body paint was a clear gel full of gold particles, and they had to leave a gap down my tummy because of the breathing thing, people said it was on my back for some reason, but it wasn’t!” See what I mean about getting painted gold is no simple matter! It were dangerous! Thankfully everything went well back then, a time when 25 year old Shirley Eaton became one on the now iconic ´Bond Girls,´ and, although a couple of months early, I´d like to wish the lovely lady a super Cumpli-años Feliz! ´VIC AND Bob´ or ´Reeves and Mortimer´ have been in the business of taking chances in comedy since 1990. Their style is extremely visual and can, at times, resort to violent, cartoonish slapstick that can escalate into fights with large frying pans, baseball bats, hammers, etc. FACT! Unfortunately their 25th anniversary tour has had to be put on hold as Bob needs heart by-pass surgery. We wish you well Bob, and hope the tour kicks on in January. Watch 25 Years of Reeves & Mortimer Tour.
‘NUTSCAPING’ HAS nothing at all to do with Showbiz, but you could well turn into a member of that elite group if you get good at it. All you need do is find an idyllic landscape, set up your camera / mobile, and should you be male, turn it into a Nutscape by making sure your cojones are somewhere at the top of the shot! Honest to god! It’s something that’s seriously trending right now! Do you want to be the coolest there is? Go to it fellas!

Quote of the Week
A woman in the audience was singing ´very loudly and very badly´ during The Bodyguard Musical at a theatre in Nottingham last Saturday, and Sacha Gainard, another audience member, was later quoted as saying “She was swearing and being quite aggressive to those who were trying to shush her, and it was at a level most of us on the second tier could hear!” The shame of it! Bell
Life Coach
WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.
Self help books don’t work I AM a 38 year old man, and nothing good ever seems to happen to me. I have a job in security, but I hate it because I work alone. I love music and play piano. I have read a stack of self help books on self improvement, which haven’t helped at all. I just wish something would come my way, and change my life. The only person who can help you, is you. Self helps books can be inspirational in the short term, but ultimately, it’s down to you, to go out and make changes in your life. Concentrate on improving your life as it is, not how you wish it to be, because right now, that is too big a task. Look in to changing your job. Choose something where you work with other people. Why not take a part time class at College, based around your interests? Or you could think about starting, or joining a Band. You will meet other people, and it could open doors for you both professionally, and socially.
Nasty friend I HAVE a friend who I have known for years. She’s always been a little difficult to deal with. My eldest son looks like he is going into medicine, and I am shocked that my friend is being very spiteful and nasty. She wanted her child to go to University, but it didn’t happen. She is being unkind about my son, and bragging to me about every little thing that happens in their lives, it is becoming very unpleasant. Most people who brag about their lives are usually over-compensating for the fact
that they’re actually quite unhappy. Your friend is jealous of the fact that one of your children is pursuing something that she dearly wanted for her own child. If her behaviour is testing your friendship, you must say something to her. If she can’t see that her comments are being hurtful, then your long relationship with her is at risk. A true friend would be happy for your achievements. Frankly, I think you would be better off without this friendship. Don’t be afraid to sever ties even if you have known someone for years.

Mercury’s take on of Neptune sends out a financial warning you would be wise to nip in the bud. Recent actions have seen you going into the red and it is important to take control where it is necessary and tighten your belt. Whilst there is little margin for error right now there is a need to make sure that all around you are paying their fare share. Venus is ensconced in your Libran double this week and it could just be that a healthy balance needs to come back into your life right now to establish a better future. You appear to be busily making plans and that is inspiring, however it is important to know that others are beginning to see you in a far different light and you must demand respect. Pluto is sextiled by Mercury midweek and it is important to have all channels of communication open and ready to facilitate this. Nothing ventured is nothing gained right now and it is high time that your angle on the matter is listened to in the current scheme of things. It would seem some people do not know what you are so fully capable of! You took on what you did knowing that your motives may very well be misconstrued but you would not have expected the animosity that has been left behind. As the Moon’s phase slides into action next week there comes a natural deadline to ensure that you are ready and waiting for new responsibilities and whatever they may bring with them. The Sun is in sextile with Pluto and Jupiter and it creeps by Uranus midweek in addition. A time to evaluate a situation to decide what your future input will be, and a need to challenge those who think that applying pressure will see you changing your ways. In hindsight you would never have got so involved, but now it is a case of, come what may. As Pluto dictates to Mercury this week so you are trying to find a quick fix solution to a reoccurring problem. Nothing is as bad as it seems but there has been some stirring and this has only served to bring further confusion into play. Be sure that what you get is really what you want and suffer no fools; although the truth may really hurt them. Venus calls fleetingly bringing romance into the equation. You are undecided and confused by current attentions of somebody who could just be a significant other in your life. Rest assured that when put to the test the result brings you the justification you seek and the confirmation that you deserve before your having to make any decision. Ceres governs time and in this case is calling the time on something that has dragged on for far too long. You have managed to put a brave face on things but it can’t have been so easy to just walk away as you have had to just recently. Not only are better times coming but this week sees someone step up to be a real friend to you, when needed. The Sun illuminates Jupiter this week and it would seem that you are finally being rewarded for your patience and great skills of counselling. It has been a somewhat rough road and only your determination and expertise could have seen you safely through. Now you can finally have some much deserved rest and relaxation. Things may be easier now that the cat has been let out of the bag, but you never wanted things to ever have to get this way. You now need to have some time to consider your next move and to make sure that you have the backing that you need to take things through. There are times that we just have to stand up and fight, and your time is now. Just that Sun energy touching on Uranus this week makes you see things in a far different light. You have got yourself into a rut, which in one way goes to protect you and the other stops you from seeing the whole picture sometimes. Be unafraid to make a decision based on instincts as your highly charged psychic energies are tuned. Neptune benefits from the opening channels of communication brought about by actions with Mercury at the start of the week. Follow through an offer which may just be what you are looking for right now, however weigh up the pros and the cons before you sign on the dotted line. Your energy and your life purpose are inspiring right now!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week
Make sure that you are sowing what you reap. Balance and co ordination are sought after skills needed to show you just what you are capable of, when all is said and done. The Cosmos leans nearer towards rewarding you.
DNA
FOR A long while I have waited for Science to believe in me and never did I realise that the reverse is true, and that the charging of my DNA will open doors to a new depths of spirituality previously denied me. Science has taken steps to try their hardest to prove that my spiritual powers are somewhat false, but when it comes to DNA they have made a discovery that helps spiritualism to explain many things. We are told that we have two strands of DNA, but we actually have twelve to thirteen strands These additional ten to eleven strands are referred to as junk or maybe shadow DNA. They can be seen under an electron microscope but have been simply forgotten as not being important enough. Each of the strands covers an esoteric gift such as telekinesis, telepathy, teleportation, self healing, soul source survival, transmutation, trance, clairaudience, clairsentience and clairvoyance. If the appropriate strand is charged photonically then the energy is gifted to the recipient; and these gifts have their place in the spiritual way of life and are a belief form in the system. I have worked with my spiritual life for well over fifty years now; and have balanced my energies with Spirit accordingly to my two strands of DNA. It is only right and proper that I work it out to charge and absorb the further ten strands, and this will be a definite focus of my studies for some time. Science therefore took the opportunity to be very economical with the truth and decided to be evasive about the shadow Deoxyribonucleic Acid they chose not to classify. I guess to them nothing was that important enough to investigate. Earth is being drawn into alignment with the Galactic Core. Those enlightened by reactivating their DNA will be able to accept specifically higher levels of consciousness as these will be sent by light energy; and we have the impetus to see how it can all work together for the common good of man. Our Sun radiates the matrix of creation, being as it is, a radiant source of energy. It reacts to our psyche and so we must greatly expand our DNA to cope with current updates. Science can be best used to find a solution to the problem that they have caused by their selective processes and blank refusal to explain those shadows on their DNA information. Much will come from the additional skills as they are fully assessed and we can learn that we can use the full gamut to the very best avail. DNA has proved essential in forensic medicine and gene assignment for paternity issues. Each and every one of us has an individual DNA profile and it can be used in all aspects to identify who we are and what we do. It paints a picture of who we really are, but now it needs to be expanded to include the missing links because they matter too. Quite how shadow DNA makes an entry into the World is best left to those who ignored it absolutely when it was first identified. I am just looking forward to looking at the skills involved and helping those who need then to get the access that they need. Russia has for many years been studying telepathy through the scrutiny and assessment of Mediums; with a view to harnessing their power if they can be of use to the State in anyway whatsoever. Harnessing adequately the power of the mind could be something well worth looking into, and then, depending how it is used, it could become a useful tool to predict and strengthen the actions of Nations. We would all profit from realising our talents and acknowledging that what we call co-incidence is actually Spirit working together with the blueprint of life that we are travelling along with. Fate and destiny still do have their part to play in the general scheme of things and anything that may alter that would be unacceptable. There are many who do not wish to know what is around the corner, and others that do not need to see the corner at all. Life continues and we can always learn something just by being around! I wait to see what provision will be made to house a new train of thought about the building block of DNA but then and only then will Science Fiction become, truly, Science Fact!

KENNY, I haven’t got over the passing of my younger sister with cancer. She was thirteen years old and I still cannot understand why she was taken so very young! Carol-Anne. H. It is always sad to hear of the death of such a young person, especially those who have had to fight major disease in the body. I know what you must be going through. However I ask you not to lose faith. Death isn’t the end of anything, it is the beginning, and hopefully your little sister is on her journey now to a better place, and free of pain. It is the quality of life and not the quantity of life that brings happiness, and your little sister always had your love, and hopefully always will.

Downhill bike ride fun ON SUNDAY riders gathered for an exhilarating downhill bike ride through the glorious mountains of Puig Campana for charity.
THE HARDY riders gathered, despite the impending storms, to help support Giving4Giving and Doggie Angells raise further funds for their wonderful charities. Amongst the riders was local Finestrat lad, Jayden, who managed to raise a whopping 200 euros in sponsorship. Following the ride was a luncheon held at the Moli Dos restaurant which was attended by many of the regular fund raisers together with some new faces who all helped contribute to raising 1,345 euros by the end of the day. This was very generously topped up by a couple called Darren and Angie who donated 155 euros to make the total 1,500 euros. Gary from Giving4Giving said “we would like to thank Gary from the Downhill Bikeride for all his time and help, the Moli Dos, the entertainers and everyone that supported us on the day.” The afternoon of entertainment and food was hosted by the wonderful Will Sparkle who was assisted by everyone’s favourite Maureen during the auction with “Cats in Hats” providing the musical old favourites and present day hits. Gary said “our super star of the day was Jayden who raised such a wonderful amount for both the charities, an amazing young man.” The Giving4Giving charity shops are always looking for volunteers to help in either the La Nucia or Altea shops and off course donations of any kind including raffle prizes for future events. If you are able to help in any way please call Gary on 603137697 or call into either of the charity shops.

Locked account
DEAR AUNTY V, My hotmail.com a/c was recently suspended due to ‘irregular activity by an outside agency’ ie. somebody tried to access my a/c. I have tried unsuccessfully many times to get it back but I just go round in circles and my emails to various hotmail depts. are just ignored. Does anyone know how to get back a suspended account? Thank you, Alexander. Aunty says: The way to “unblock” or recover a hotmail account is via the following link... Note that they require an alternate email address from you so they can verify and contact you. https://account.live.com/acsr Alternatively you can go and try to reset the password, where you may also be asked your hotmail security questions. https://account.live.com/resetpassword.aspx Note, though, that in some cases it can take a few days or weeks before accounts are unblocked, as they try to make sure you are who you say you are.
‘‘Missing file’’ HELLO AUNTY. When I start up my Acer laptop I get a “missing file” message. I think it happened after I ungraded to Windows 10 but before that I did clear some unused programs so could have deleted something I should not have! Please can you tell me how I can overcome this problem without buying somebody’s software to do so. Thank you. Helen Aunty says: The most common reason for this error message is that you have some “malware” on your system, usually from installing some free software that has some “advert software” bundled in. As I have mentioned in past articles, people generally install free software using the default install options, which can install
some unwanted bundled software as well. It is always advisable, when installing free software, to go for the advanced or expert install options where you can select not to install the bundled software. A scan of your PC using an anti-malware program ,like Anti Malware bytes, or AdwCleaner, or Ad Aware (all available for free) should locate and remove this software. It may be advisable to go into your “uninstall programs” list in Control Panel and see if you have some unwanted advertising software installed before you run these programs. Response: Thank you so much. My anti-malware did not pick it up but installing and running the Adwcleaner did the trick.
Speeding up HI AUNTY, any easy tips/remedies for speeding up a slow laptop? I’ve deleted unused programs and have 127gb used out of 232gb. It is a 2009 Acer Aspire5738z. We are very grateful for your page and all your assistance. Helen Aunty says: Although cleaning space on the hard drive can help speed up the PC a bit, two main reasons for a slow PC are low memory and unwanted software. Memory and disk space are not the same thing, even if they do use the same “gb” and “mb” measurement, so cleaning up and freeing up space on your hard drive will not do anything to increase the memory. Only buying new memory cards for the PC will increase memory. Running software like antimalwarebyes and adaware should help keep the PC free of bad unwanted software that can slow down PCs.

China
THE THIRD largest country in the world (after Russia and Canada), China shares a border with an incredible 14 other countries, including land and seaport borders.
Great Wall of China
MADE UP of a surface area of 9.6 million square miles and coastline of 18,000 kilometres, the country is dominated by the presence of mountain ranges, the most famous of all being the Himalayan Mountains where the country borders with Nepal and Tibet, home of the famous (infamous?) Everest, the highest peak in the world. Most visitors, however, prefer to see the other famous sights of this amazing country, such as the Great Wall of China, a massive man made structure that stretches East to West across the country, started in 220 – 206 BC by the first Emperor of China, and then added to and maintained at various stages throughout history, to achieve a length of over 21,000 km, when adding all of the branches and various structures of the wall together. From Beijing, you can take a day excursion to the Badaling Hills to see one of the best preserved sections of the Wall.
Whilst in Beijing, the Capital of China, you must also see Tiananmen Square, the largest public square in the world, with capacity of up to 1 million people. With its name meaning ‘Gate of Heavenly Peace’, this was the formal entrance into the Forbidden City during the Ming Dynasty. An essential destination when in Beijing, the Forbidden City is the largest surviving palace complex in the world, made up of almost 1000 buildings. Close by is the Summer Palace, also designated a UNESCO Heritage site of almost 3km, the vast majority of which is made up of lakes where one can enjoy beautiful landscaped bridges and boat outings. You need a good 3-4 hours and the best walking shoes to enjoy the best of these gardens. Shanghai is another main highlight of a visit to China, the largest city in the country and one of the world´s most important ports. Situated between the Yangtze River and the East China Sea, the city began as little more than a village, gaining status of a market town in 1074. The city continued to grow and expand, to become the modern city it now is, home to around 24 million Chinese, the largest city in the world. Tiananmen Square
Xian, former capital of China, is home to the famous Terracotta Warriers, a collection of more than 2000 statues of life-sized sculptures, reaching as far back as 246BC and over 30 square miles in size. Perhaps a bit much to see in one afternoon! These are just a few of the highlights of visiting China – there are too many to list. Tour Operators offer comprehensive programmes, combining the main cities with luxury train journeys and flights, or perhaps one of the more stunning ways to see these sights – a river cruise which gently takes you to each of the most important destinations, but allows you to return to your own bedroom each evening.

Chicken with peppers A SIMPLE way to brighten up a plain old breast of chicken that leaves you with vivid colours and an intense sauce. I used red and green peppers in this version, but you can use any colour you like – a mixture of yellow and orange peppers would be nice if you can find them. You will need a large frying pan with a tight fitting lid. 2 chicken breasts 1 medium onion, peeled and sliced A small red pepper, de-seeded and cut into strips A small green pepper, de-seeded and cut into strips A clove of garlic, peeled and chopped Half a glass of dry white wine Salt and pepper Butter Olive oil Half tsp dried mixed herbs 1. Melt a knob of butter in a large frying pan, season the chicken breasts with
salt and pepper then fry for 3-4 minutes on each side until nicely brown. Remove from the pan and set aside. 2. Add a splash of olive oil to the pan and stir-fry the onions, peppers and garlic for 6-7 minutes. Add the wine and herbs and heat until bubbling. Reduce the heat to low and return the chicken breasts to the pan with all their juices. Cover the pan with a tight fitting lid and simmer gently for 1015 minutes. Turn the chicken during this cooking time and baste with the cooking juices. 3. Place the chicken breasts on serving plates and heat the peppers and onion until bubbling so that you are left with just a couple of spoonfuls of liquid. Spoon over and around the chicken and serve. Hooked on La Tuna
THE MINSTRELS of Tuna de Xabia had members of U3A singing and dancing the night away during a magical night out.
Tuna de Xabia
by JACK TROUGHTON U3A JAVEA’S Spanish Culture and Cuisine Group enjoyed the colourful entertainment provided by the singers and musicians following a tradition that dates back to the 13th Century. At the restaurant of Club de Tenis, Javea, group leader Angela Chantry outlined the history of ‘La Tuna’ and its roots in the history of Spain’s oldest universities.
The first seats of learning were founded in 1212 during the reign of Alfonso VIII. The poorest students – known as ‘sopistas’ – struggled to make ends meet. The forerunners of the modern day ‘tunas’, they made the best of their musical talents and basically busked; performing for food and a few coins to pay for their studies. Bands of tunas continue to perform using traditional instruments including lutes, mandolins and guitars and dressed in
colourful costumes decorated with ribbons and badges – the wooden spoon and fork are a typical symbol of the groups. And to huge applause, group co-leader Tony Dearie thanked the minstrels for their performance that had members trying on the band’s gowns and taking to the dance floor with them. For more information about the group and other U3A activities, visit www.u3ajavea.org.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Verbs that work Following on from “me gusta”, (“I like it”, and literally translated as “it pleases me”), it is important to realize that we can change this verb in all the usual ways. It takes a certain amount of mental effort, but the results are worth it. For example, it’s perfectly possible to say something like “Me gustas” (“I like you”, that is – “you please me”) or even “¿te gusto? (“Do you like me?” that is “Do I please you?”) We can also use the expression in other tenses with “me ha gustado” (I have like it / I liked it); “¿te gustó?” (Did you like it?), “le gustaron” (he liked them); “os va a gustar mucho” you (plural) are going to like it a lot). In fact the possibilities are endless. I mentioned last week that there were many other verbs that behave in the same way as “gustar”. For example: “me encanta” (“It delights me” that is “I love it”), “me sorprende” (it surprises me), “me fastidia” (it annoys me), “me interesa” (it interests me), and again, these can be changed around according to the usual rules of person and tense. Here are a few more or these verbs and some comments on their use. “Me duele” is a phrase that I teach to beginners to use in a medical situation. It means “it hurts me”. We can use this in other ways too – “me dolió” (it hurt me), “te va a doler” (it’s going to hurt you) and so on. Similar to this is “me molesta” (it bothers me, or it hurts a little). “Mi comentario le molestó “ (My comment bothered (slightly upset) him). “¿Le molesto?” (Am I bothering you?) “No, no me molesta en absoluto” (No, you are not bothering me at all!)
This last question and answer uses the “usted” version of “you”. Parecer is a useful verb to use in this way. It means “to seem” or “to appear”, so “me parece” means “it seems to me”. However, we would be more likely to translate it into English as “I think”. “Me parece que sí” (I think so), “me parece que no” (I don’t like so). Also very commonly heard is “¿Qué te parece?” (“What do you think?” That is: “How does it seem to you?”) We can use this phrase is many common everyday contexts, such as making arrangements “¿Qué te parece el miércoles a las dos?” (How does Wednesday at 2 o’clock look?”) “Me extraña” is another example of the same kind of thing, using the verb “extrañar”. It means “it seems strange to me” and is used when we might say in English “I’m surprised that …” “Me extraña que no entiendas eso” (“It seems strange to me that you don’t understand that” in other words “I’m surprised that you don’t understand that”) Again, we might commonly find that in the past: “Su actitud me extrañó mucho” - “His attitude surprised me a lot” or “I was surprised at his attitude”). Here is another use of the same verb “Me extrañaría mucho si eso fuera el caso” (“I would be very surprised if that were the case”). Some of the verb tenses used here might be ones you haven’t come across yet, but what I mainly want to get across is the flexibility of this particular verb form, and its multiple applications.

Give a dog a home! BRONCO HAS now recovered after somebody tried to kill him by stabbing him and has no emotional scars. Bronco is a Pastor Alemán (German Shepherd), 4 years old, bright, intelligent, and loves to please. He is a good boy but would also protect your home. He is full of fun, loves the lady doggies, and could do with a chance in life. He needs someone to love and take care of him. (Castrated full passport). ARC’s Christmas Fayre
Mark Lewis, Rob Roberts, Michael Hack, Hannah Robinson, Liz Lewis
by PATRICIA THOMPSON WHEN KIA was found a permanent home by the charity’s adoption team Mike and Rob decided to adopt a dog from the charity and subsequently volunteered their services to organise a fund-raising event to help the charity finance the rescue and rehabilitation of more stranded pets. The Let’s Eat Restaurant in Benimar was the venue and Michael, as host for the evening, greeted everybody as they arrived with a glass of cava and
escorted them to their table for an evening that started and finished on a real high. Rob Roberts entertained everyone with his incredible singing voice and, with many great raffle prizes, all thankfully donated, and with a proportion of ticket sales going to the charity, the total amount raised during the evening was 720€. The Pets In Spain team has many projects to help animals in need and also re-unites lost pets with their owners. A new awareness campaign has been
started to persuade dog owners to register their dog on an emergency blood donor register. The charity is totally self funding, so money donations, sponsors and household items to sell in the charity shop in La Marina urbanisation are vitally needed. For more information about the Pets In Spain registered charity and the many different animal rescue and welfare projects please call 645 46 92 53, email info@petsinspain.com, or visit the website www.petsinspain.com.

Have YOU had your Free hearing check up with GAES yet?
If not, why not call your nearest clinic today? In order to raise awareness about the importance of detecting hearing problems, GAES Hearing Centres are offering readers a hearing check up absolutely free, at any of their GAES centres. Regular Hearing check ups offer the best protection to maintain hearing and should be taken as often as visual or dental examinations. From age 55, yearly check ups are recommended. We have asked one of GAES hearing specialists, Vanessa, (hearing specialist in the Torrevieja clinic of GAES, Spain’s leading Hearing Specialists) to explain the clinic’s hearing examination offered to readers. Hi Vanessa, could you let our readers know where your clinic is located in Torrevieja, and where do your clients usually live? Of course. The clinic is located in Calle Ramon Gallud, no 52, near the Ayuntamiento de Torevieja (Town Hall). We have regular English clients from as far as San Fulgencio, La Marina, Guardamar, Orihuela Costa and all the close towns right up to Cartagena. How long have you worked for GAES? I have been working in GAES since 2003, as a qualified professional specialist in Audiology and Audio Protethis. Do all the medical staff speak English at GAES CLINICS? Yes, absolutely. We have very many English patients, so English is a must in all GAES clinics, especially on the Costa Blanca, in
areas like Javea, Calpe and here in Torrevieja. Who should be coming to the clinic for a check up? In reality, anybody older than 16 could take a hearing examination. Particularly anyone who feels that they may have had some hearing loss, or who are older, or simply would like to check that everything is still optimum. What is the normal process in a hearing revision at your clinic? Is there any obligation of further treatment? Firstly we would inspect the auditive canal to check there is no blockage, and if the ear is found to be clear, then there is a complete and thorough audio test to know the grade of hearing. If there is found to be hearing loss, we fully explain what help is suitable and recommended to regain a good level of hearing. The appointment lasts approximately one hour. There is no obligation of further treatment. How much does the revision cost (is it free?) It is completely free. Are there new technologies that Gaes uses in your clinic, in both treatment and diagnosis? Of course! As market leaders, we have to stay ahead using the latest technology. Every year we incorporate the latest advances and products to achieve the best results in diagnosis and treatment. There are also aesthetic advances
that are just as important. Thanks Vanessa. Your welcome. We look forward to hearing from readers soon. Don’t wait, book your free hearing check up today at YOUR local Gaes hearing clinic. See their advert every week on Page 11 in your RTN.

Evenswiss
EVENSWISS the unique patented cosmeceutical brand which is taking the beauty world by storm is now available in Spain, but not in the shops. THIS SWISS produced and tested product has been some 30 years in the making, the key ingredient (a bio identical human peptide) which was first discovered in 1981 (interleukin1alpha) is the body’s own skin builder (Dermatopoietin®). As with all natural processes in the human body Interleukin -1a and its power to regenerate diminishes with age, but can be artificially stimulated by ‘damaging’ the skin’s upper layers, hence the discovery of treatments such as chemical peels, derma-rollers, laser treatments, mesotherapy etc. The breakthrough of replicating Interleukin-1a was initially seen as the way forward for enhancing the look, feel and texture of skin by using a natural non-invasive process of applying it topically (as a cream) on to the skin. This would then signal the natural interleukin-1a to start to replicate itself. This process starts deep in the dermis layer (fibreplast) and regenerates Elastin, Collagen and Hyaluronic acid, the three building blocks for smooth and supple skin. This was seen as a life changer for the thousands of women (and men) who did not want to subject themselves to invasive treatments. However, like all major discoveries there is always a further challenge. The key challenge in this case was that the cascade process would not stop. It was not until 2008 that scientists at United Cosmeceuticals in Switzerland (the parent company of EVENSWISS) discovered that combining Interleukin-1a with another peptide (Hexadeltine) insured that the required amount of Interleukin-1a could be regulated and therefore, controlled. After a further three years of trails and safety testing the EVENSWISS brand was launched and the patent protected. As an added bonus it was further discovered that this peptide combination had skin healing and strengthening qualities, which has led to it being used by clinics to firstly increase skin tolerability before invasive therapy and then help to repair the skin afterwards, thereby enhancing the effects of clinical treatments (including Botox and fillers). There are only 10 products in the range targeting the key issues (regenerative face care, crows feet, anti-cellulite action and anti-hair loss treatment). The brand is only available online at: www.evenswiss.es or through our consultants and clinics on the Costa Blanca. For further details of this remarkable product please email info@evenswiss.es

Jason and the Spartans!
by PATRICIA THOMPSON FITNESS INSTRUCTOR Jason has decided to enter the ‘Spartan’ charity event in Valencia. Not content with paying the entrance fee, which is given to nominated charities, he has decided to take it a step further and work together with the charity, Samaritans in Spain, to raise much needed funds in support of the fantastic work the volunteers carry out, which includes answering the freefone (900 52 51 00) helpline 24 hours a day. In Jason’s own words, “Physical
fitness goes a long way towards mental stability. The Spartan race is to test myself, mentally and physically, and of course to help raise funds for the Samaritans in Spain. I wanted to do something for a charity which isn’t just for any one particular nationality but rather for anyone who speaks English, which the Samaritans in Spain is there for. I think we forget this fact so it’s good to be reminded that anyone who speaks English can phone or call in to their ‘drop in’ centre in Punta Marina”. With just a couple of weeks to go, Jason is training hard at his
local gym, Fit4All. Jason needs businesses to sponsor him for the Samaritans in Spain, so please help support this local and very deserving charity. You can contact Jason at ptinthesun@gmail.com, or, for more information about the Samaritans confidential emotional support for those in distress, please visit www.samaritansinspain.com. Joy at surprise donation by JACK TROUGHTON
HARD-WORKING VOLUNTEERS at Jalon Valley HELP were given a morale boosting 10,000€ donation by charity colleagues at Cancer Care Javea. Team members who travelled to Javea were kept in the dark about the size of the “lifeline” until the cheque was revealed and HELP President Elaine Horton admitted: “The gasps were incredible”. The money will be ‘ring-fenced’ to help provide care for the sick and terminally ill at the Ferris Hospital in Fontilles, where 18 months ago HELP opened the ‘Animo Suite’ in partnership with Cancer Support Group MABS. And since opening the charity has accommodated over 40 people – some were recovering from major illnesses or surgery, and others who were terminally ill. Presenting the cheque, Cancer Care’s Maggie Mackenzie said it was a “privilege to be of assistance” after seeing the work undertaken at Fontilles by HELP. “We want to help in any way we can.” Elaine responded with thanks for the “overwhelming generosity” and described it as a “real lifeline.”
Charity teams united
She said: “We are dealing with more and more tragic situations and I cannot tell you how grateful we are to you for your support – the people who use our facility at Fontilles are unable to tell you for themselves how grateful they are for this service, but I see for myself how much it is appreciated. “On their behalf, therefore, I must say a huge thank you to all your members and volunteers for their efforts in raising this money and for you willingness to collaborate with us. It is a practical demonstration that together we really can make a difference.” ADVANCE And Elaine told RTN that while she knew of the size of the donation in advance – the biggest the charity has ever received – her team had no idea; thus the emotional response. She said HELP was a small charity but much needed in the community. “But you cannot help keep an eye on the finances – frequently we have patients in our room, in MABS’
room and in two other rooms. “It is very expensive and you cannot help but sit there and cringe because it is just the tip of the iceberg. They are all needy people and our experience is if patients can pay, they do. “But this was a fabulous, fabulous gesture from Cancer Care and they welcomed us with open arms – people seem to be waking up to the need for this help.” Elaine added: “We have to fight for every penny we get and we always give assistance if asked; but money doesn’t just roll in. For another charity to recognise that and to help out is just phenomenal...this has never happened before to Jalon Valley HELP.” She said her team had clearly set out that the sick, elderly and terminally ill must come first. “I think this is recognition that we are doing something right thanks to the work of our volunteers – sometimes it is very hard work – and something like this just lifts everyone’s spirits.”

It was all hearty, belly-filling, food, with peas like bullets, lumpy gravy, and stodgy suet puddings! The School Dinners event at Reflections, Calle Aviles, San Luis (near the Christmas Shop) on Wednesday 25th November will remind you of days past with a similar menu, but cooked superbly, for your enjoyment. A two course menu will include spam fritters, macaroni cheese or shepherd’s pie, with chips or freshly mashed potato, with ‘afters’ of either apple crumble with lump free custard or hot rice pudding with a dollop of jam, with bread and butter and a glass of orange squash. Quesada Golf Society match report
LAST WEDNESDAY Quesada Golf Society played at La Marquesa. The course was showing signs of wear and tear despite maintenance with the fairways and some of the greens somewhat patchy.

Touchdown for charity THE ‘ARMCHAIR Internationals’ enjoying the excitement of the Rugby World Cup on screen at the Lancashire Bruja Bar in Javea raised 230 euros for charity while watching the action. by JACK TROUGHTON THE BAR staged raffles, and a series of competitions like guess the score and name the first try scorer before each game during the tournament. And rather than pocket the cash, winners donated the money into a central fund and after the exciting climax of the final – New Zealand overcoming Australia at Twickenham – the money was donated to Make A Smile, which supports children cared for by EMAUS. Lancashire Bruja owners Karen and Nigel Rushton, who also collect clothes donated by customers for the charity, are already planning their next big event – the annual New Year’s Day Swim, again raising money to help children.
HELP guests of ADIMA
Armchair Internationals in action
VOLUNTEERS FROM Jalon Valley HELP were guests of honour at the ADIMA Centre in Pedregeur on Saturday as a ‘thank you’ for the annual donation to support the summer school. The association was lent the premises in 1997 and after its success, it became a permanent base in 2004 – running a school for youngsters with learning disabilities and providing occasional weekend facilities for adults with mental problems. The volunteers were given a tour of the centre before enjoying wine and tapas in the gardens – they were then treated to a hearty lunch; and over coffee were presented with white chocolate Halloween lollipops, made by the children the previous day. And during the meal there was the opportunity to chat with some of the young people and accept cards made specially to say thanks.

Spooky goings on
SCARY MONSTERS, witches, ghouls and ghosts filled Moraira’s Church Square on Saturday night as families gathered to celebrate Halloween.
scary little monsters
by JACK TROUGHTON IT WAS the Teulada Moraira Lions Club annual party when the charity says a big thanks to all the help they have received over the last 12 months. Youngsters raced around the square burning off some excess energy or occasionally stood still long enough to patiently queue to play some traditional 31st of October games – or simply to have their faces painted. And ‘fright night’ Lions-style has become a family affair with many adults also dressing up to join in the fun – greeting friends from under hats, wigs, mask and makeup.

Popular Portugal WORLD HERITAGE sites, history, architecture, and – naturally port all played a part in the U3A Vall del Pop’s successful visit across the border into Portugal. by JACK TROUGHTON TRAVELLING VIA Salamanca, 53 U3A members headed for Porto via the medieval village of Guimaraes and its 10th Century castle, once the home to the first king of Portugal. Porto nestles on the banks of the River Duero and dates back to the 13th Century. The old centre is a world heritage site but many buildings are crumbling because of a lack of investment. And the Duero is one of the oldest wine producing regions in the world. The tour took in Ramos Pinto’s bodega and ate chocolate while sampling red port – white port has only been produced since 1936 when the British were unable to buy sherry because of the Spanish Civil war. The next destination was Lisbon, the coach stopping at villages along the route, including Obido, famous for its liqueur
Sampling port
‘Ginja’, which everyone tasted. In the Portuguese capital, the party were taken on a couriered tour of the city stopping at some of the most famous land-
marks before a visit to the Atlantic coast and the fishing village of Cascais – there was then the opportunity to explore during a free day before returning to the Costa Blanca via Toledo.

Tim Saunders Independent unbiased car reviewer
The ruler of small vans A FRIEND needs a broken cooker replacing immediately. I suggest repairing it but he says it costs more to repair than to replace. He is frustrated that only the four hobs on his Beko work and that an element for the grill and oven needs
replacing at considerable expense, which isn’t justifiable. “Older cookers don’t have built in redundancy,” my cynical friend claims, “…like all new appliances, which are designed to fail so that the manufacturer and their supply chain continue to make money after the product has been sold.” Now, normally, I wouldn’t be able to help him because firstly I am no electrician and secondly even with the best will in the world a cooker will not fit in the back of my old Ford Fiesta. But this week I’m driving a shiny new Citroen Berlingo van with double doors at the rear and a helpful sliding door at the side as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. So I suggest that we pop down to this reconditioning specialist I know not far from where I live and see what they can offer. He’s delighted because he was fretting about how he would transport a cooker if he found one. And he’s even happier when he learns that there are three seats in the Berlingo cabin, so his girlfriend can come along, too. Inside, the cabin is comfortable and, just like the exterior it is reminiscent of the Peugeot
Partner van, that I tested a few weeks ago. Air conditioning, electric windows and a decent stereo all come as standard and the five speed manual gearbox is easy to use. The diesel engine is responsive and economical. Anyway, they find a cooker for under £100 and we take it away there and then. It’s fairly easy for us to manoeuvre it into the back of the van, shoving it through the double doors on its back and then my friend opens the sliding door and jumps through to pull it into the rear. There’s a step inside the sliding door that makes getting into it fairly easy. “The Citroën Berlingo has ruled the small panel van market since it was launched in 1996,” says Parkers, the car experts, “…a market leader through virtue as well as value, the [second generation Berlingo introduced in 2008] offers a raft of improvements over the previous model, which make the arguments for choosing one even more compelling. “Two body lengths are now available and many new features, including a collapsible passenger seat to increase load length for especially long items. The Ready-To-Run range includes factory-produced specialist conversions including glass-carriers, dual-fuel LPG models and temperature-controlled vans.” Citroen Berlingo 1.6HDi diesel New price range: 15,211.33€ to 21,608.78€ Economy: over 50mpg Power: 90bhp Top speed: over 100mph

Alfaz Fantasy Football League
THE 9 PREMIER League games at the weekend produced 27 goals, 7 clean sheets, 34 yellow cards and 3 red ones. Norwich’s Martin, West Ham’s Collins and Southampton’s Wanyama all received their marching orders from our vigilant Referees. by PATRICIA THOMPSON Joe’s team, Keith Lard F.C. increased their lead at the top of the Alfaz Fantasy Football League to 21 points over Leon’s team, Racing Sandancer, who had moved up 2 places to 2nd. The biggest mover in the top 20 was Paul’s Elite Kitchens, Swinton, who leapt up 13 places to 3rd. At the foot of the table. Lyn’s team, Handbrake City, lost ground to Alison’s Foxywise; the gap now being 23 points. The most competitive league so far has been the U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League where only 6 points separate the top 3. Super Rhys, the present leaders, hold a one point lead over Nathan’s Tyrannosuarez-Rex F.C. who replaced Gino’s Minions in 2nd place. At the opposite end of the table, Bradley’s team, Hero to Zero, are firmly in the relegation zone and are now trailing Teigar’s Tigers by a massive 67 points. In the Mark Carter Ladies Section, Joanna’s Hup Hannah City are putting pressure on the leaders, Maxine’s Plaistow13hammers, and are only 11 points behind. Jin’s Dream Team have dropped back in contention in 3rd place whilst former leaders, Angie’s Blues, have slipped down to 4th place. There is no change at the bottom where Handbrake City are still chasing Alison’s Foxywise. Maxine became the 3rd lady manager to win the 20€ voucher sponsored by Quick Save
Supermarket in Albir with 162 points for October. Hup Hannah City retained their place at the top of the Leonard Knowles Construction Golden Boot League, courtesy of Leicester City’s on-form striker Jamie Vardy who has, so far, chalked up 55 points in this section. Keith Lard F.C. climbed 2 places to 2nd and are 17 points behind the leaders. Adam’s team, White Girl, was top scorer in this league with 25 points, mainly because he is the only manager to have selected Watford’s top striker Ighalo who scored both goals against West Ham, taking his goal tally to 7 this season, helping Adam’s team to leap up 15 places to No 7. At the other end Shelley’s Funsize Hammers are still at the bottom. The two teams going into the Monthly Premier Imports Draw for a case of cava are Paul’s team, Elite Kitchens, Swinton, who were top scorers this week with 52 points and the lowest scoring team, Rachel’s Blue Murder, who managed a minus 3. Manager of the Month for October has been generously sponsored by Elidas Steakhouse in Albir who provide a fine array of tender steaks. The lucky winner this month is Paul whose team, Elite Kitchens, Swinton, overtook Maxine’s Plaistow13hammers in the final week to earn a fabulous meal for 2 at the Elidas Steakhouse. Chris’s team, Bristol Rovers CPW, was this week’s winner
of breakfast for 2 at Rafters, sponsored by Kate, when they jumped up 83 places to No 82 in the league. This week the 2nd round of the RTN K.O. Cup competition takes place and, with last season’s winner gone, Elite Kitchens, Swinton take on John’s team, Kickers.. Ferrari fight to the Finnish
After a short break of 23 years, Formula 1 returned to Mexico, and the revamped Autodromo Hermanos Rodrigues. by ALAN PALMER Named after Mexico’s two most famous racing drivers of the Sixties, Pedro and Ricardo Rodrigues. Although Pedro was the eldest, born in 1940, it was his younger brother Ricardo, born 1942, who exhibited an incredible talent from a very early age, indeed he won his first race in America when just 15 years old, and by 1961 had secured his first F1 drive for Ferrari at Monza, qualifying an unbelievable 2nd on the grid, only for his fuel pump to fail on lap 13. Given a Ferrari works drive in 1962 he didn’t do all the races but still achieved a second at Pau, a fourth in Belgium and sixth in Germany. Ferrari decided not to enter the non-championship race in his home country that year, so he secured a drive in the Rob Walker Lotus 24, but during the first days’ practice he lost control at the famous Peraltada curve, slamming into the barriers. He was killed instantly, he was just 20 years old. His big brother Pedro is probably better known for his exploits in Sports cars, than F1, although he enjoyed success in both. He won the South African GP at Kyalami in a Cooper Maserrati in 1967, Le Mans in 1968 in a Ford GT 40, and drove for both BRM and Ferrari from 67 -71, winning at Spa in 1970. He was killed in a minor sports car race in Germany in 1971, aged 31. The last time F1 came to this famous track the race was won by Nigel Mansell, on his way to his only World Championship for the Williams team, and he was on hand to witness his successors battle it out on this circuit which now combines long straights with fiddly bits and a huge stadium section with grandstands reaching seemingly hundreds of feet up into the sky, all of which were packed with enthusiastic fans cheering everything that moved, especially Mexico’s new favorite son Sergio “ Checo” Perez, in the Force India, which, apparently , is rumoured to be being re-branded as Aston Martin for next season, with Johnnie Walker sponsorship. We shall confirm or not in due course. Maclaren enjoyed their usual Q1 session, with Alonso’s car
breaking down, and Button not even putting in an appearance. Q2 saw both Lotus’ eliminated, along with Carlos Sainz Jnr, his Torro Rosso developing brake problems, so Q3 produced few surprises, with Mercedes 1&2, Rosberg on Pole and Hamilton sharing the front row, ahead of Vettel’s Ferrari and Kvyat’s Red Bull, followed by team mate Daniel Ricciardo and the Williams of Valtteri Bottas, just ahead of his own team mate Felipe Massa, who had the Torro Rosso of Max Verstappen and the Force Indias of Perez and Hulkenberg making up the top 10. Kimi Raikkonen copped another grid penalty for yet another engine change, and started 19th just ahead of Jenson’s Maclaren, which they managed to get going for Sunday’s race. Both Mercedes’ got away cleanly and although Lewis tried to do another muscle job on his partner, this time Nico was having none of it, and kept the lead out of Turn 1. Behind them Ricciardo caught Vettel’s right rear tyre, causing a puncture, and dropping the runner-up contender to last, and further back the luckless Fernando Alonso once again lost power, and cruised into the pits for another early chat with the media. Apart from Vettel’s early enforced change of rubber the others started to come in around laps 9/10, with Williams, and several others changing. On lap 17 Vettel, having battled back to 12th, spun at Turn 7, which did his tyres no good at all, and then ran wide at Turn 12, which gave a bit of an indication how his race was going, not to mention Ferrari’s. Readers of this column will remember that, in Russia Raikkonen’s Ferrari and Bottas’ Williams, having passed Perez’s Force India, struggling for grip on well worn tyres, had a bit of a coming together when Kimi dived down the inside, slamming into the Williams and eliminating it on the last lap, and earning Kimi a time penalty which handed Mercedes the Constructors Championship. Well, another continent, another coming together between the Finnish duo, except this time it was Valtteri going for the gap with Kimi, who had fought his way up from 19th to 6th defending. The difference this time was that Bottas was well up alongside the Ferrari, and it should have been his line, However Raikkonen, who seems increas-
ingly desperate for a result, turned in on him, and the Ferraris’ rear wheel ran over the Williams’ front, launching the Prancing Horse into the air and finishing an inspired drive with broken right rear suspension. This time the powers that be ascribed this to be a racing incident, with no penalties awarded. Laps 48 and 49 saw Mercedes call its’ drivers in for new rubber, a decision that Hamilton twice queried , as he felt he could go to the end on his tyres, and, in the end his Engineer had to issue a “Team Order” to get him into the pits. As it turned out Lewis would have been proved right, as Sebastian Vettel, not wanting to miss out on making a further contribution to Ferrari’s lousy weekend, stuffed his car into the wall at Turn 7 on Lap 52, bringing out the Safety Car, and this would have allowed Hamilton to have changed tyres with impunity, still, hindsight is a wonderful invention. It is nine long years since Ferrari have had a double DNF, Schui and Felipe Massa in Australia in 2006. After the restart Lewis couldn’t close the gap enough to challenge Nico’s lead, and the race went to Rosberg by just under 2 seconds, giving him his fourth win of the season, as against Hamilton’s 10, but it does mean Lewis will now be unable to equal the record for most wins in a season at 13 held jointly by Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. Behind the Mercedes battle Bottas brought his battle weary Williams in for an excellent third, having caught and passed Kvyat’s Red Bull towards the end, Ricciardo brought his Red Bull home in fifth and Felipe Massa was just behind in sixth. Nico Hulkenberg pipped teammate and local hero Sergio Perez for seventh in the Force Indias, with Max Verstappen’s Torro Rosso and Romain Grosjean’s Lotus rounding out the top 10. The teams reassemble in Brazil on the 15th November, but before that we shall be reporting on the last MotoGP of the season, just up the road at Cheste, and the battle between the Yamahas of Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo for the World Championship, with just 7 points difference going into the last round, and Rossi starting on the back of the grid as a result of his indiscretion in Malaysia.
