UNFRIENDLY FACEBOOK Friday, November 20 - Thursday, November 26 2015

CROOKS HAVE hacked into Facebook accounts in an attempt to pull off a new scam using the social media site’s messenger service.

Lee Walker

Potential victims are conned into believing they are being contacted by a friend – even reassured by seeing a familiar photograph – but in reality they are being tempted by fraudsters. And the bait is the announcement they have won cash in the ‘Facebook Lottery’, which leads to an attempt to steal personal details.

Continued on page 5.

Last weekend Lee Walker received a message from Brenda Walker, a genuine Facebook friend and fellow member of Careline Theatre in Alcalali. However, the message was from thieves. “It read ‘Hi Lee, how are you?’ and then starts ‘have you heard my good news? I have just won 200,000€ on the Facebook Lottery, and you are on the list (of winners) as well,” he told RTN. “I immediately typed back ‘are you sure it’s not a wind up’ and she replied it was genuine; so I messaged that I was really sceptical.” PRIZE Lee was told to claim his prize he must accept a Dana Pink as a Facebook friend and he would be sent all the details of how to claim his own prize. Soon he had a message from ‘Dana’ who claimed to work for a charity for the disabled and he was a winner in a jackpot lottery and could “do whatever you want with the money”.

From the Editor’s desk...

Hola!

IT SEEMS everyone has caught the Facebook bug these days; using the social media site to keep in touch with family and friends, even being reunited with long lost mates. It is truly a global trendsetter. Ask anyone, young or old, if they are happy using Facebook and the chances are the reply will be a very big ´yes´. People just love it, partly because it is secure and they remain in control Or do they? Facebook´s ´messenger´ has now attracted the attention of the bad guys out there; international crooks looking to make a fast buck at our expense. Criminals are now hacking into accounts to steal lists of ´friends´ electronic addresses – they then attempt to fool those same friends into thinking they have received a genuine message when they are being set up to be fleeced. It is yet another headache created by our love of 21st Century technology. As they always said on Hill Street Blues: “Be careful out there!” Incredible scenes at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday night when the international between England and France went ahead in the wake of the Paris outrage days earlier. You could have heard a pin drop during the minute´s silence and both sides were united to pose for a historic photo together, another truly emotional moment after the game got the go ahead – the score was largely irrelevant.

Benidorm’s tsunami alert by JACK TROUGHTON ON TUESDAY Benidorm’s beaches went on tsunami alert as an earthquake hit Greece. Both the Poniente and Levante beaches were closed for a period of fifteen minutes as government authorities put into action their territorial emergency plan on Tuesday afternoon. Waves were predicted of up to a metre high as the emergency coordination centre alerted the public, via social media such as Facebook and Twitter, that the sea level could rise significantly, in fact as much as 100 metres. It may seem to some slightly ludicrous that the alert only lasted approximately fifteen to twenty minutes, however, some experts say that the coast may have escaped the danger due to a change in wind direction or that the coast of Sicily and southern Italy acted as a “breakwater.” Visitors to Villajoyosa beach were also cautioned to stay back until the alert was lifted. The strong earthquake that struck off the western Greek island of Lefkada on Tuesday caused loss of life and severe damage to several buildings, Greek police said. The epicentre of the magnitude 6 quake was 13 km (8 miles) west of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea. Police said in one incident a 59-year-old woman had been killed when her house collapsed after being struck by a falling rock in the seaside village of Ponti. A local resident said a second woman had been crushed to death in a stable in the mountain village of Athani. The U.S. Geological Survey registered the quake as magnitude 6.5.

DIVERS MAKE SEA CHANGE

UNDERWATER CLEANING of the seabed off a Calpe beach last Saturday brought over 150kg of rubbish back to the shore for proper disposal. The waste filled 12 huge bags after 40 divers backed up by a team of volunteers on dry land went to work at Cala Raco de Calp. A huge piece of fishing netting was recovered from the bottom as well as over 200 metres of fishing line. Divers also found cans embedded in rocks and huge amounts of plastic bottles and other items littering the seabed. The cleaning operation was supported by the Red Cross, providing a staff and a rescue boat and ambulance. Calpe Town Hall backed the event by providing logistical support and councillor Ana Sala stressed the work was to help raise “awareness” of the problems of litter and “the importance of maintaining a clean ecosystem while respecting the natural environment.”

Close UK borders campaigner lives in Spain

Tina Reeves

by JACK TROUGHTON A BRITISH woman who launched a “stop immigration and close UK borders” petition has been accused of hypocrisy as she has lived in Spain since 1989. Tina Reeves, who lives in the Andalucían city of Jaén, launched an online petition that demands the government vote to block migrants from across Europe and the world entering Britain until the Syrian based terror network has been destroyed, insisting Westminster takes the lead in opposing freedom of movement. The 62 year old woman conducted television interviews from her Spanish home and is now facing a barrage of criticism after admitting that she spends 50 per cent of her time living in the southern Spanish city, yet aims to deny others the chance to settle in the UK from abroad. Ms Reeves said “I don’t think there is hypoc-

risy. I worked in Spain initially, many years ago, before it joined the EU, and I didn’t need open borders to allow me in. To the Spanish government I would be an immigrant but not to my friends or children. I can’t see the argument. If it turned out I couldn’t come to Spain and do what I’m doing because they began a closed borders policy then I would accept that at this time because I think we are living in a very dangerous time.” The petition was started by the 62 year old after she became concerned that “Islamic State militants could make their way into Britain on boats packed with refugees fleeing for a better life away from their war torn homeland, similar to those who carried out the Paris atrocities.” Since the Paris atrocities the petition has seen a vast increase in signatures despite many taking to social media such as Twitter to criticise Ms Reeves.

Spain issues warrant for Israeli Prime Minister SPAIN’S NATONAL COURT has issued arrest warrants for the Israeli Prime Minister and seven former government officials. The Spanish court has reopened a 2010 case against eight current and former top Israeli officials for a naval incident that resulted in the death of 10 Turkish activists. The courts action means that should the Israeli Prime Minster, or any of the others named on the warrants come to Spain, they risk being arrested according to Judge Jose de la Mata. The case that had been put on hold last year and is now being reviewed relates to an attack by Israeli security forces against the Freedom Flotilla and ships which were trying to reach Gaza back in 2010. The main civilian vessel in a fleet of six that were attempting to break an Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, the Mavi Marmara ship, was stormed by the Israeli Defence Force where ten activists were killed.

Brenda with husband Richard

Continued from front page HOWEVER, BEFORE doing anything else, Lee sent a message back to Brenda asking if she could call him. “This is where it goes stupid,” he said. “I got the message back that she could not ring me because she was in ‘Ca’ – I thought it weird she could message but not ring, so I asked what was ‘Ca’ and the reply came ‘California’.” Now certain something was amiss, Lee typed: “Do me a favour and name my wife and two daughters...I haven’t actually got any daughters – and it stopped! “Until then they had replied straight away, you could see them typing really quickly, but as soon as I asked that, it just stopped.” Lee than telephoned Brenda – who was busy rehearsing pantomime – and told her what had happened and was probably happening to all her other Facebook friends. “She now realises she has been hacked.” RTN understands the scam has been attempted on other potential victims and is likely to quickly spread. SECURE “In this case you get a message, see a picture of the happy couple and just get

sucked in,” added Lee. “You think Facebook messenger is secure and it has to be one of your friends. “Unfortunately, people play on the greed thing but you haven’t actually bought a ticket – you have to step back while they try and explain a machine has given you a random ticket.” And he advised how to check if a message was genuine in such circumstances. “Always get someone to call you on another line or ask a personal question that only a genuine friend would know the answer.” Brenda said she had been forced to change passwords on all her devices as a result of being targeted. “I do hope people can be warned about this – I didn’t even know I had been hacked until Lee called me,” she said. “After that I had seven or eight people asking to be my friend – but I said I already was friends with them; presumably that helps the crooks get into your list of friends. “So if someone asks to be your friend you must not do it, it allows them to get in. Fortunately, Lee was quick enough to double check.”

FAKE MARRIAGE GANG ARRESTED SPANISH POLICE have made several arrests involving a group who arranged marriages between Moroccans and Spanish nationals.

The group, who operated from Meliana, southern Spain, would charge between 5,000€ and 8,000€ to arrange a fake marriage which would give Moroccan nationals legal residency in Europe. The police arrested 36 people suspected of making the arrangements and charged a further 271 people with aiding and abetting the illegal activities. Police issued a statement on Tuesday saying that “once they obtained the residency permit and regularised their situation, they would return to countries like France, Germany, Holland and Italy where they lived and where their families were waiting for them.” The nationals who had European status were paid between 3,000€ and 4,000€ for each scam wedding.

Protest again street crime

NEWS BITES

BENIDORM REMEMBERS PARIS ON SATURDAY evening at 7pm a silent gathering was organised for members of the public to show solidarity with the Parisians following the previous day’s loss of life.

The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, called for the gathering to give everyone the opportunity to show solidarity with the victims and in the fight against terrorism. Benidorm people did not disappoint as over 500 people turned up to participate in a five minute silence where the flags were placed at half-mast and a French flag took centre stage as French nationals stood alongside the mayor. Following the five minutes silence there was a round of applause from the crowd, a truly moving experience.

by JACK TROUGHTON HUNDREDS OF people are expected to protest outside Benidorm Town Hall on Monday morning demanding action against street crime. Residents and business owners are backing the campaign ‘Protect Our Tourism” and maintain crime levels are soaring in the resort – the third most visited place in Spain after Barcelona and Madrid. And campaigners believe too many visitors are falling victim to mugging, pickpockets, and con artists; potentially

driving people away to other destinations. Protest organiser Karen Cowles said it was time action was taken to reclaim the streets. “We all want to feel safe and happy where we live and visit. We don’t want people to leave with a bitter taste in their mouths. “Crime must be stamped out and not brushed under the carpet – it does no benefit to Benidorm and gets into the British press and gives the resort a bad name. “I am pro-Benidorm, I have lived here

for 23 years and I am pro-Benidorm and pro-Spain.” Karen said the campaign had international support and livelihoods were at stake because of the importance of tourism to the local economy.”This protest is a very positive thing and a chance to clean up Benidorm.” The protest started as a Facebook group ‘Benidorm Robberies, muggings and Pea Men’ – launched by a British visitor – and has “snowballed”. The protest is scheduled for 10am on Monday.

Captura fugitive held by JACK TROUGHTON OPERATION CAPTURA has claimed another success with the arrest of the 73rd fugitive from its ‘most wanted’ list of 86 names believed to be hiding in Spain. Michael Roden was held in Alomartes in Andalucia on suspicion of being a member of an international drug trafficking gang. The arrest was on 4th November – but details have only just been released to protect an ongoing investigation being carried out by the Guardia Civil and Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA). The baby-faced 26-year-old, originally from Redditch, was one of seven people arrested for an alleged role in drug trafficking, possession of firearms, money laundering and forgery. Officers searched six houses and seized around 30kg of cannabis, drug packaging material, several guns, 85,000€ and £600. WANTED And Roden is also wanted by West Midlands Police in connection with the illicit importation of 70kg of cannabis in 2013. A European Arrest Warrant was executed and he is expected to be extradited to the UK. Dave Allen, Head of the International Crime Bureau at the NCA, said: “The arrest of Michael Roden marks yet another success for Operation Captura and highlights the effectiveness of the campaign in flushing out fugitives. “We have caught 73 out of 86 fugitives on the Captura list and will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to find the remaining 13.” And Lord Ashcroft, the founder and chairman of charity Crimestoppers, said: “The success of Operation Captura has been quite incredible and I commend all those at Crimestoppers, the NCA, and the Spanish authorities, for their tireless work in locating those wanted individuals.” Anyone who can help catch the remaining “unlucky 13” can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 900 555 111 in Spain or 0800 555 111 in the UK. Housing plan scrapped by JACK TROUGHTON PLANS FOR a 160 home ‘sheltered housing’ project in Javea have been rejected triggering claims the town has lost a golden opportunity. The proposal was for a private development on the slopes of the Montgo and the homes would be rented to pensioners who wished to maintain independence. However, Councillor Isabel Bolufer – responsible for urban planning – said technical reports for the ‘Huertos del Montgo’ project did not comply with current rules and the proposal did not meet the required levels of ‘care and health’ use that was the basis for developing the land.

The council’s urban planning meeting went on to refuse planning permission despite the opposition of Xabia Democratica. Oscar Anton, the party’s President and former Deputy Mayor, said: “It was a plan for a specialised residential home to be built by a private company – it would have been great for Javea. “It would not be a traditional residential care home but homes for older people, people of the third age who could rent apartments. This was to be for a stage before people need full time care and would have given them independence.” He said the proposal did get outline approval back in 2012 when he was part of the government team. “Unfortunately the concept of

Oscar Anton

sheltered accommodation does not widely exist in Spain but it is the future.” Mr Anton said as people got older they wanted to downsize, sell their villas and move into apartments while “maintaining a

high quality of life”. And he said by refusing the project the town had lost jobs – such as gardeners, nurses, kitchen staff – and money that would benefit the local economy.

Missing person search launched FRIENDS OF a Scottish woman living in Cádiz and working in Gibraltar have instigated a missing persons search for her, as she hasn’t been seen since 4th November. Lisa Brown, aged 32, who has not been seen since the 4th of November, was reported missing on the 8th November after friends became worried that she had not been in contact. Ms Brown lives with her young son and partner in Cádiz and relatives are keen to stress that the son is safe and well. However, they are extremely concerned for the whereabouts of Lisa. One of Lisa’s relatives, Helen Jordan, posted via Facebook an appeal to help track down the missing mother. It said “Local girl missing from Cádiz, Spain! Anyone with any information regarding the movements of Lisa Brown since Wednesday, November 4th, or if you are in communication with her please contact me through Facebook. We, her family, desperately need your assistance.” The message was instantly shared thousands of times as media both here in Spain and back in the UK began spreading the word. Lisa moved from Dumbarton in Scotland to Cádiz in southern Spain a few years ago and worked in Gibraltar for Ladbrokes gaming firm until August and was due to start a new job the day after she disappeared. A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman

confirmed that they are in contact with Lisa’s relatives regarding her disappearance. The spokeswoman said “we are liaising with local authorities and providing assistance to the family of a British national who was reported missing in Spain on 8th November.” Spanish police were remaining tight-lipped about their investigation as they insisted “all avenues are being explored. No theory has been ruled out.” They were refusing to confirm that San Roque, near the upmarket resort of Sotogrande, was the last place that she had been sighted nor whether her current partner had been detained for questioning. A spokesman for the force said: “The investigation is ongoing and we are not in a position to go into detail at this stage.” Lisa has always maintained close contact with relatives in Scotland including her sister Helen Jordan who still lives in Dumbarton. Helen said “this is completely out of character and we are very worried.” At the time of going to press Lisa Brown is still officially missing and anyone with information on her whereabouts is urged to contact her family via Facebook or on 0044 774 275 8300.

Russia confirms plane bomb by JEANETTE RICE ON TUESDAY Russia confirmed that a bomb downed their plane over Egypt and President Putin offered a £33 million reward. The Kremlin said for the first time on Tuesday that a bomb had ripped apart the Russian passenger jet over Egypt last month and promised to hunt down those responsible and intensify its air strikes on Islamist militants in Syria in response. Alexander Bortnikov, head of Russia’s FSB security services, announced in a meeting late on Monday night with President Putin that evidence had been found of explosives.

He said “according to an analysis by our specialists, a homemade bomb containing up to 1 kilogram of TNT detonated during the flight, causing the plane to break up in midair, which explains why parts of the fuselage were spread over such a large distance.” “We can unequivocally say it was a terrorist act,” Bortnikov said in footage that was not released until Tuesday morning. President Putin then released a statement offering £33 million for any information that helped detain those responsible for the act of terrorism against Russia. Mr Putin said that the incident was “one of the bloodiest acts in modern Russian his-

President Vladimir Putin

tory.” He also ordered the Russian air force to intensify its air strikes in Syria. “We will search for them everywhere wherever they are hiding. We will find them anywhere on the planet and punish them,” Putin said. Two employees at Sharm el Sheikh International Airport have been arrested by Egyptian authorities over the bombing of Flight 9268

with Egyptian security officials saying that 17 other people have been detained following the 31st October attack, although they were not directly linked with the crash. Thousands of Britons were stuck in the popular holiday resort in the wake of the attack as the UK and several other countries suspended flights following security concerns.

Unusual road signs in Sweden

by JEANETTE rICE

A SWEDISH artist has decided to take action over people using their phones whilst crossing the road by creating his own road signs. Jacob Sempler, aged 29, from Stockholm, has placed several traffic signs, showing two pedestrians looking at their phones instead of the road, around the city. The artist has taken the extreme measures having realised that he too was addicted to his phone and was nearly hit by a car whilst walking down the street. He is now looking to spread his message and encourage people to keep their heads up as they walk. Sempler

said “One day, on my way to work, I was almost run over because I was staring at my phone like a sick person, It hit me then that I’m not the only one with this behaviour and that it ought to be addressed somehow.” Jacob and his creative partner Emil Tiismann set out to do just that by creating the signs and placing them in various locations around Sweden. As people passed the signs many stopped to take pictures and share them, ironically via their social media pages. Despite the pair’s good intentions, local traffic authorities stated that, since the signs are not official traffic signals, they must be taken down.

Almonds under investigation

A GUARDIA Civil operation that had been running since September in Valencia has culminated in 52 arrests. Operation “Amande” in Valencia has kept the Guardia Civil officers busy as they have now arrested 32 men and 20 women, aged between 17 and 60 and of Spanish, Romanian and Moroccan nationalities, for alleged involvement in the crimes of forgery and theft. One of the detainees is the owner of a warehouse selling almonds. The Spanish warehouse owner has been charged with receiving and using fake documentation of illegal fruit. The Guardia Civil, using the plan against agricultural and livestock theft, had been investigating various crimes of theft of farm products in the region of Utiel-Requena. As a result of these investigations the Valencia police started Operation “Amande”, in order to identify, locate and apprehend the perpetrators of the illegal activity, which had caused alarm among local farmers. Those arrested are accused of the theft of 24,000 kilos of almonds in addition to having 145 counterfeit documents and records (DATAs) to simulate the lawful origin of the almonds. It was reported that some of the documentation being used was that of a deceased person.

Marina Baixa Hospital under new management by JEANETTE RICE THE MARINA Baixa Hospital, known locally as Villajoyosa Hospital, is under new management this week. The Villajoyosa Hospital’s previous management team, appointed by the old PP council, has been replaced, with the Ministry of Health appointing Dr Rosa Louis Cereceda as overall manager. Dr Cereceda has a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Alicante and has a Master’s in Public Health. She is a specialist in Preventive Medicine and Public Health and has had a career within

Crime figures down in La Nucia

the Valencian region for over 15 years. Previous appointments include being a doctor in admissions and as head of hospital admissions for Villajoyosa, San Vicente del Raspeig and Orihuela. Until her appointment to this current position, she was head of the Foreign Health Service in the Government Office of Alicante. Other appointments have been made for specialised care, primary care, director of nursing and director of primary care nursing, and it is anticipated that the new management team will be in place within the next three weeks.

Dr Cereceda

THE LA Nucia security board met on Monday for their annual analysis of crime rates and reported that figures for 2015 were below the national average. The local security board, which is made up of Guardia Civil representatives, the regional police in Alicante and the mayor of La Nucia, meet once a year to discuss the crime rate figures. Following their meeting on Monday morning an announcement was made that the 25.31% recorded for the town was significantly lower than the national average of 40% and also lower than their figures for 2014. Some of the improvements that the group attributed to the reduction included working on the Municipal Plan which has focused on cyberbullying and harassment at the La Nucia Institute. Bernabé Cano, the town mayor, said “La Nucia is a safer town today and we will continue to work to improve it. The local police will continue to collaborate and work closely with the various state security bodies and the Government Office to perform all actions and possible preventions where possible. The figures for the 2015 crime rates show that La Nucia is improving every year. We appreciate the great collaboration of the National Police and Guardia Civil in all actions, programmes and plans with our local police.”

Are thieves finally going to be punished? JUST DAYS before a large protest is due to take place at the town hall in Benidorm the council have met to discuss how to punish repeat offenders such as pickpockets and pea men. Lorenzo Martínez, councillor for citizen security in the town, met on Wednesday with various departments, including the local prosecuto, to discuss what could be done to make the Rincón de Loix area safer. The Rincón area is popular with British tourists but also with pickpockets and pea men who prey on the visitors, sometimes using threatening tactics. The meeting discussed if it would be possible to remove repeat offenders by using restraining orders. Martínez said “We must

improve the image of the area, which is not what we want. In this regard it was a productive meeting in which we were able to see what possible legal measures we can take.” This week has also seen the announcement that the local and national police will work together more to strengthen security in the area. In Madrid and Barcelona authorities have already implemented a scheme similar to “three strikes and you are out” for repeat offenders. A press conference is being held today at 11.30am at the town hall in Benidorm which will include Karen Cowles, one of the main organisers of the protest to be held on Monday 23rd November.

Cala Mosca protest march by KEITH NICOL

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 29th is the date of the Climate Change March when huge protests will take place across the world to show Government leaders the support against the use of fossil fuels and global warming, on the eve of the crucial Paris climate talks, which will take place from the 30th November to the 12th December. Around the world, in major cities, people will come together to demand that governments take action to save the planet. Local resident Román Jiménez is one of the major protagonists and, along with the backing of the pressure group PUMA 22, a protest march has been planned for Sunday week. “At a time like this, after the killing of so many innocent people, for no reason at all, in Paris, in Beirut, in Iraq and in so many places, we are heartbroken. There are other types of violence such as women killed by the men they used to love; and if we think carefully we should understand that the summit next week in Paris about climate change is really a peace summit, as the damage upon planet earth is violence as well. Why not live in peace with each other, and with the planet

that gives us food, water and shelter? All over the world normal people like us are going to get together and celebrate freedom and intolerance to violence, be it against women, for political or faith reasons, or against our planet earth which is sheltering us.” On the 29th November there will be a walk from 11am until 1pm at Cala Mosca, Orihuela Costa. Román added: “You can join in the march anytime you want; bring your bikes, your pets, your flags, to show that we are able to live with each other, bring yourselves! Enjoy a magnificent spectacle along the last kilometre that’s not yet built on. We

want Cala Mosca to be a natural park. At 1pm we will get together, have one minute’s silence, then we will hear the Marseillaise ,followed by lunch, so do not forget to bring your own picnic. We have authorization from the government but still the Popular Party governing Orihuela Costa is not sure where its heart lies, with the builders or with the people. Join us at Cala Mosca for a peaceful event against all type of violence. At the same time you´ll get to meet other people who think we need to help each other and our planet earth.” For more information go to www.PUMA22.org.

CARTAGENA FAMILY DEDICATED TO STEALING FRUIT THE GUARDIA Civil in the Murcia region have recently carried out several investigations against farm and livestock theft, culminating in the arrest of eleven people, eight of them members of one extended Cartagena family, who are allegedly responsible for at least three counts of burglary in farms in the Campo de Cartagena.

Three vehicles were intercepted and all the stolen fruit recovered, including five tons of oranges, part of which has been donated to charity. The operation began when the Guardia Civil were made aware of the theft from several farms in the Campo de Cartagena of large amounts of oranges. The investigators examined the properties where these crimes had occurred and found that, at dawn, a large group of people had gained access to fields through perimeter fences and harvested the crops of oranges. This had required considerable organization to run both the robberies and to distribute the perishable products without delay. Several vehicles that appeared to be related to the incidents were found to be owned to family clans engaged, in some cases, in street vending. With this information, members of the team inspected the different weekly markets in and around Cartagena where they identified several consignments of oranges whose characteristics match those specified by the farmers. These investigations have led to the identification and arrest of people allegedly related to these thefts, eight Spanish people with family connections, and three Moroccan agricultural employees.

#PrayForParis

Wembley Stadium

By Jeanette Rice

WHEN ENGLAND played France in their friendly match earlier in the week it wasn’t a game where the result mattered. On Tuesday the match between the two nations was an emotional one with players from both teams lining up together to show solidarity through sport, before a minutes silence was held for all the victims in Paris. As the French anthem was played all the big screens displayed the words and the whole stadium gave a rousing vocal tribute to those who suffered last Friday. Around the world cities lit up their monuments in a show of both support and defiance against terrorism.

British gambling venues raided

Previous raid on a Benidorm business

by JEANETTE RICE BRITSH BARS became the target of the Valencian Police last week as raids were conducted to stop illegal gambling. The Generalitat Valencia Police visited Benidorm again last week to conduct further raids of British bars that continue to run illegal betting. Despite social networks and press covering similar raids in October two establishments considered it safe to continue with their gambling activities and became the target for last week’s crackdown. The two bars, one in Avenue Juan Fuster Zaragoza and the other in Avenue Zamora, were found

to have electronic betting systems that enabled customers to bet on British sporting events. Among the items seized were a computer tower, laptops, details of races and other events, betting slips, both blank and completed, together with 10,000€ and £5,000. Between the two venues five workers were questioned by the police with three of them found to be working without contracts from their employers. Spain takes gambling very seriously and, with the exception of a couple of venues, such as the new casino in Benidorm, everything is state operated or supervised.

November sunshine vs pollution TEMPERATURES FOR November have seen holidaymakers along the Costa Blanca enjoying the beach life but for residents in Madrid air pollution has been a major problem. As temperatures averaged in the mid 20’s last weekend Alicante beach was packed with sun worshippers as the thermometers hit 25C. Benidorm sun loungers were also in high demand as visitors for the fiesta week made the most of their last days of warm weather before heading home. For residents of Madrid, however, it was a different story as on Thursday evening the city council met to review figures showing several days of excess nitrogen dioxide levels in the region. On Friday the continued high levels of air pollution meant that the City Hall had to implement their emergency measures plan, which included reducing the speed limits on major roads from 80 km to 70 km and, for the first time

ever, prohibiting non-residents from taking their vehicles into the city centre and parking. The 3.1 million residents of the city were urged to use public transport in a bid to help reduce the dangerous levels. The Spanish capital is the sixth most polluted city in Europe, according to a ranking published in 2014 by French environmental organisation Respire. Aemet, the Spanish national weather agency, reported that the warm weather was being caused by an anticyclone that had settled over the region and that the highest recorded temperatures over the weekend had been in the Canary Islands. Las Palmas in Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz in Tenerife recorded temperatures of 27C as parts of the UK were experiencing high winds, heavy rainfall and snow.

HELPING COMMUNITY HEALTH

VOLUNTEERS FROM HELP of Denia and the Marina Alta returned to the health centre in Els Poblets last Friday to present medical staff with useful medical equipment.

by JACK TROUGHTON HIGH PRESSURE sales pitches completely miss the target at pensioner May Archer’s home – she never buys anything but loves the company. Company sales directors must pull their hair out when members of their team get lost in the black hole that is across May’s front door – there should be a warning sign on the front gate especially for unsuspecting salesmen lured to the address with an appointment. ‘A Foot in the Door’ by award winning writer Richard Harris brings together an unlikely bunch of people desperately trying to close a deal and Javea Players chose an excellent cast of actors to bring them to life on a Gata stage. The play was great fun with some wonderful comic moments and throw away lines and it was an enjoyable and entertaining evening. Sadly, at times, it did feel a little flat – like opening an expensive bottle of wine to discover it had corked. Overall, however, there were enough madcap moments and gags to make it another success for a theatre group approaching a ruby anniversary. Carole Saunders was magnificent as May, holding court in the living room

of her semi, with the visitors treated to the hospitality – tea and biscuits – of a kindly OAP. SHUFFLE May is mightily impressed with the perfect world offered by her guests and their wares – the audience was mightily impressed with Carole’s concentration, always acting as she watched television and praised the world of ‘what’s his name’ – or even shaking a leg in the Zimmer frame shuffle. At the end May admits her motives – but in a happy ending the sales people are closing deals with each other. Commissions are assured. Philip Anderson was Warren the Wardrobe man, complete with glossy magazine and greenhorn innocence. It was an inspired piece of character acting – playing a man nervous, twitching and looking to earn some cash but also

polite and wanting to be helpful. Warren is the first to suss out the hostess but his warning fall on deaf ears. Enter Desmond the security system guy. Lee Hodges impressed as the bully, fragile over a failing marriage, and also able to win May’s attention by being capable of a charming ability to sing favourite numbers, and installing CCTV to be viewed on our heroine’s TV. However, still no sale. Polish decorator Stan, played by Andrew Cleven, and ‘illicit’ squeeze and assistant Angela (Geraldine Livesey) spend much of their time in passionate embrace. Thankfully, they see the light and actually get engaged – another happy ending. And Gillian Hodges, the hot-blooded lady from the Valleys, is touting a miracle keyboard. May loves it. No sale, but an entertaining piece of acting; especially as the accent worked!

The team members donated two digital ‘tensiometro’ machines – blood pressure monitors – and two ‘pulsioximetros’, used to measure blood oxygen levels. On a previous visit, HELP gave the Centro Salud a hydraulic examination table, already proving to be a useful piece of kit at the centre. And the charity’s President Candida Wright commented: “It is great for HELP to be able to provide equipment that will be a benefit to all members of the community should they need it.” Pictured with all the equipment are (from left) Dr Belen Gomez, HELP Treasurer Malcolm Bunn, Nurse Concha Aliaga, centre receptionist Manolo Sanchez, charity President Candida Wright, and Doctor Beatrix Lopez. Anyone wishing to join the HELP team can visit the website www.helpofdenia.com or Facebook page ‘Help DAMA’ for more information.

From Weddings to Cars at the IFA LAST WEEKEND thousands of betrothed couples, their families and friends, headed to the IFA exhibition centre, beside El Altet airport, for Fira Novios. Along with beautiful bridal gowns, suits, flowers, salóns de boda, fashion shows, photographers and everything for that perfect wedding, one of the stars of the show was the vast array of beautiful wedding cars. Wedding transportation ranged from disco buses with a full bar on board, to a fantastic selection of Rolls-Royces, through convertible VW Beetles, to classic cars and even Ford Mustangs and muscle cars, for the arrival of the groom, or the bride, if wearing a fairly compact designed dress. This leads nicely on to this weekend’s show, which starts today, Friday, at 10.30am as the IFA transforms itself into the largest new and used car exhibition centre in Alicante Province. From the 20th to 22nd November, the 37th edition of FIRAUTO, the region’s largest New Car Show and the 23rd edition of Used Motor Show, EXPOCAR, takes place. In the last edition

Some of the fabulous wedding fashions on display

of FIRAUTO-EXPOCAR more than 15,000 visitors attended and, with the upturn in the economy, even more are expected this weekend. Visitors to the show will find: new and used cars, Km 0, products and services for the driver, financing services, insurance, plus toys and memorabilia. The cost of admission is 8€, 6€ by presenting the discount voucher that you can download from the IFA web page, and 5€ if buying in advance at http://tienda.feria-alicante.com/en.

There is also a standard charge for parking of 3€. During the three days, IFA will become the largest showcase of new and used vehicles in the province, as visitors can see and compare a wide range of vehicles and find out all about new market developments under one roof. During the exhibition, they will also have the APPLUS ITV service, so you can have your vehicle pre-tested for its ITV during your visit. Doors are open from 10.30am to 9pm inclusive.

AFECÁNCER ORGANISES A TALK ON NUTRITION

ONE OF the most recent topics of discussion in the last few weeks has been about foods that cause cancer, especially red meat, but how much truth is there in all this? What amounts of some foods are actually carcinogenic? What kind of diet is best for the prevention of cancer, and, if I suffer from cancer now, what can I eat to improve my symptoms and to feel more energetic? All these and many more questions will be answered in the open chat organised by local cancer support association Afecáncer, which has been organised in the Casino, tomorrow Saturday November 21st at 7pm. The talk is being given by nutritionist Antonio Quesada of the Body Balance Clinic. Admission is free and the Afecáncer team want to thank both the Casino of Torrevieja and Antonio Quesada for his selfless collaboration with Afecáncer when promoting this talk aimed at raising awareness of the importance of good nutrition for a life without cancer. Although the talk is in Spanish, there should be other Afecáncer team members on hand to help with translations.

Pet adoption and awareness day THOUSANDS OF animal lovers could be found mingling on Cortes Valenciana on Saturday, at the first Town Meets Country event.

Organised by Gina Marks and her team from GM promotions, the event had the backing and sponsorship of local car dealer Grupo Rubio, with their promotion of the Skoda car brand. Town meets Country brought a brand new style of event to Torrevieja with some amazing animal attractions in the display arena. This oneday only, fun-day was complete with a village fête, country show atmosphere that informed and delighted everyone, dog shows, ponies, hawk display and dozens of stalls, with all profits from the day going to animal charities, including Torrevieja Rescue dog and cat centre. Those attending also had the opportunity to look at some of the dogs available for adoption at Torrevieja’s Kennels, located close to the Policía Local, Firestation and behind the Eco Waste Recycling Park. The kennel is undergoing a few small changes thanks to the intervention of newly elected Councillor Carmen Morate and her drive for Torrevieja to offer better service to abandoned animals and for the treatment of domestic pets throughout the city. The Councillor for Animal Welfare, Carmen Morate, is looking for the help of more volunteers to improve conditions for the life of cats, dogs and other animals housed in the centre. They are needed to help with walking dogs, feeding and cleaning and helping to find new forever homes for the animals in their care. With the Christmas holidays approaching and some volunteers away during the festive period, the animals still need to be fed, walked and cleaned, as it’s just another day to them, so even if you can just vounteer a few hours of your time, this would be much appreciated. The longer term plan for Torrevieja is to budget for major improvements, or perhaps a new facility in 2016. Although the

change of name may be just a first small step, Torrevieja is now collaborating with Guardamar Council and some of their abandoned pets. A new website is being developed and, while the old municipal Facebook page has been closed down, now all the pets for adoption can be found at https://www.facebook.com/AnimalistasTorreviejaGuardamar. The Municipal Kennels opened in 2011 and have helped to significantly cut down the number of stay dogs wandering the streets, offered many wonderful pets for adoption and reunited lost dogs with their owners. Through the use of social network Facebook, new owners are being discovered every week and are taking up more and more unwanted pets for adoption. The Municipal Kennels, or Hostal, is located close to the Habaneras Shopping Centre and Policía Local in the Toretta area of the city. You can visit in person and see all the dogs and cats any weekday between 10am and 2pm. To adopt a dog, just bring a copy of your DNI, NIE, Passport or/and Padrón with you. All the dogs have had a full health check, have had all their inoculations and are micro chipped.

Chris’s Corner

by

Chris Ashley

Writer & Broadcaster

In 1973 with Coventry housewife Hilda, I may have started the Yom Kippur War. Stay with me.

The saga starts on a pirate radio station based on a rust bucket of a ship called the Voice of Peace moored in International waters off Israel. The VoP was rumoured to have been bankrolled by John Lennon or the CIA, or both, and transmitted in mainly English, Hebrew & Arabic anchored on a very salty bit of the Med. Virtually impossible to drown. If Natalie Wood had fallen (accidentally??) into this sea instead of the Pacific she could possibly still be with us. So here I am with a bunch of scurvy knaves and Captain Codpiece who was as camp as a pink 2 man tent from Millets. On my first evening I went on deck to take the air. Suddenly in the distance I heard the sound of a craft approaching at speed and out of the night mist came a heavily armed – Uzi’s ‘R’ Us - patrol boat with the real deal Rambo. It started circling and a searchlight came on, it was like Sunday Night At The Palladium. The bullhorn boomed “Listen carefully now – this is a non negotiable order - play Mouldy Old Dough for my fiancee Rebecca in Tel Aviv, I miss her.” Now, with the greatest respect to Lieutenant Pigeon’s opus, it doesn’t work on any lovelorn level. Notwithstanding I was back in that studio faster than a robbers dog. I played the blooming thing 20 times on the spin. However did my Cupid capers precipitate a crisis that pushed us a step closer to World War 3? This all happened October 5th 1973. The next day a coalition of Arab States led by Egypt & Syria attacked Israel starting the Yom Kippur War.

My theory is the record is so annoying it would drive a drippy hippy never mind a demonic despot to a violent reaction. It’s all down to the really irritating ragtime honky tonk piano player. Ladies & Gentlemen I give you (Drum Roll) HILDA! - Hilda Woodward - Mother of Lieutenant Pigeon aka Rob Woodward. The only mother and son combo to have a UK number one hit and they

recorded the dread Dough in the lounge of their Coventry semi little knowing the mayhem that would ensue. Heaven knows what kind of Armageddon would have been unleashed with ‘The Birdie Song’ – which you’ll not hear on Bigfm 89.9 & 99.8 (www.bigfm.org) although I might give the Mouldy Oldie with Hilda a spin for old times sake just for you landlubbers & Rebecca.

Cinema first for Torrevieja TORREVIEJA’S NEW Cinema and Culture Club ‘Admit One’ could hardly have asked for a better film to grace the screen at Cines IMF, as 007 was in town with SPECTRE. Such has been the response to the return of English language films that SPECTRE has been held over for a third week, with a daily screening at 6pm for the next seven days. At the moment Admit One have more than 300 people who have opted in to stay in touch by email with updates sent to them, usually on Tuesday or Wednesday informing them of the next film to be shown in English, before news of this has even hit their official web site. All films are shown at CINES IMF at the Ozone Centre, beside Habaneras and the Bowling Centre. It costs 5€ on Monday and Wednesdy and 7€ on other evenings, a snip when compared to UK prices. As soon as the new club is officially launched, members will only be charged 5€ Monday to Thursday, with special discounts, members only screenings, a film festival, raffles, and their membership card will double as a loyalty card. After ten films the next one is free, with free entry also given on your birthday. Nick from Admit One added: “We are producing the new membership cards this week. They have to be sequencially numbered, one by one, so the printing process is slow. Thanks for your patience in waiting for everything to be put into place. Those wishing to join can drop into the CMO, the glass building behind Carrefour, on the last Monday of the month, when we’ll be there at the meeting of the U3A from about 10.30am to 1pm. Other venues will be announced shortly.” First in line to see SPECTRE last week were Steve, Cathy and her brother, who have the proud distinction of being the first to purchase their tickets, with Cathy saying: “My partner Steve is a real film buff and looking forward to everything a mem-

bership of a film club can offer.” Like a true film buff, they showed up at 3.30pm to make sure they were number one. Nick from Admit One said: “Once we are up and running, we will be looking for volunteers to help with the running and promotion of the club. If you have the time and inclination to help out, your assistance will be much appreciated. Just drop us a line to film@admitone.club and we´ll be grateful for your offer to help. You can also prebook for future films at the ticket window for a future screening or visit the Cines IMF website, http://cinesimf.

com/torrevieja/ and follow the links. As soon as they are available, future film screening times will also be on their website. http://cinesimf.com/torrevieja” This week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, CINES IMF are offering not one but two films for you to enjoy during the week. Filming begins for music video

by JEANETTE RICE

RTN HAVE been given exclusive access to local band Sugar Shack’s music video filming that will accompany their Christmas track “A Child of His Time”. Local band Sugar Shack never dreamed that they would be recording a contemporary hymn for release as a download this Christmas, but, after some persuading by Tam S. Lok, who wrote the song, the lads of Sugar Shack, Sean and Duncan, agreed to work on the project. Whilst the band has always been open to new ideas, this was certainly a very new genre to work in. In August this year RTN featured Sugar Shack in the paper and. around that time, they started work in collaboration with Lok on the song, which is written with a contemporary upbeat style. When asked how he came to write this particular song, Lok said he was “inspired to write because I feel that a good number of children were not fully versed in the life of Jesus.” The song reflects this through a storyteller with its catchy melody and chorus, and it is hoped it will appeal to the imagination of all ages telling the Christmas story. Realising that he could not do this on his own Tam applied his knowledge and background in sales and

marketing to form a team on the Costa Blanca to work with the project. John Sterling, of Bencali music, was invited to join the project to do the promotional video for the song with a local professional photographer, AnneLise Johannsen, to shoot the publicity photographs. The arrangement and mixing of the track was done by Duncan Inglis. Tam said “I chose to do the project in the Alfaz Del Pi area because I have been a regular visitor to Albir over the years. I have got to know a good number of the locals and Sugar Shack were a natural choice to do the song, with their excellent musical performances and Duncan’s technical expertise. I felt no other band could do the song justice as well as them.” The surrounding area of Costa Blanca also lends itself to the publicity photographs and promotional video for the song, with the narrow streets, local villages like Altea, Bollula and Guadalest, and surrounding hillsides, giving a feel of the middle east, where the events of the story took place. The song will be available on ITunes by the end of this weekend and with Amazon, Spotify and the top 12 stores and their subsidiaries within the next 5 to 15 days worldwide (111 territories). RTN will, of course, keep readers posted about how the local band’s Christmas CD is progressing.

La Marina v San Fulgencio EARLIER THIS year a number of the urbanisation roads were resurfaced, but not at no extra cost to the ratepayers. We have had to wait impatiently for over 6 years for our infrastructure to be replaced after being vandalised by a previous council when completely unnecessary. All that was required was a ditch to be dug in the centre of the roads to lay main drainage to comply with European legislation, and not to touch the pavements on both sides of the roads. We residents of Oasis are being forced to pay enormous amounts of money for this work to be carried out when it should be the council’s responsibility, with any costs borne by all the ratepayers, not just a few hundred residents, who already contribute to all the infrastructure in San Fulgencio village and the whole of La Marina Urbanisation. Yours faithfully, Robert Delacour

San Miguel Social Services Christmas campaign IT’S TIME to think about helping others to have a better Christmas and San Miguel Social Services are starting their Christmas campaign for the less fortunate in their local community. There are a large number of families registered with Social Services in the village, mostly with children. Thanks to last year’s generosity, they have enough toys for Christmas and The Three Kings, but they do need non-perishable foods and festive fare so they can make up food parcels. The main collection point is in the old town hall, San Miguel, Mondays to Thursdays, but there are also a number of bars, restaurants and businesses that have kindly offered to be collection points. They are: Dolphin Properties, Captain Morgan’s Bar & Restaurant, Cheers Bar & Restaurant, Euronics (El Galan), Mirador del Mediterráneo Bar & Restaurant, Nations Bar, and The Nook Bar. Last year’s response was fantastic, so this year’s challenge is to do even better!! Regards, Trish Herbert, San Miguel de Salinas.

Inheritance procedures and the new European regulation Some people do not make plans for their deaths. However, it is very important to arrange everything and to make a will. Even if you have already made a will, it is necessary to review it, because the Law has been modified and there are some new options beneficial for your relatives and heirs. The new European Regulation 650/2012, which is now in force, relates to the contesting and challenging of Spanish Wills granted by British citizens in Spain. This regulation was passed and ratified by Spain, and as per its article No. 20, it affects those citizens of the United Kingdom, Denmark, Ireland and of some other EU countries who are residents in Spain, even if they have not taken part in the adoption of this Regulation. The new regulation can cause many problems related to Wills made in Spain, since the applicable law to the Inheritance will be the law of the country where the deceased had his habitual residence. Also as per article 22, the testator can opt at the time of making the will or at time of death, for his/her national law. According to the new European Regulation, if you live permanently in Spain (tax resident) and decide to leave in your will all your assets to your wife or to any other person (no children), it is extremely important to specify your national law in your will. Otherwise, if you

permanently live in Spain and die here, the applicable law to the Inheritance should be the Spanish Succession Law. That means that your children, as forced heirs, according to Spanish Law, would inherit at least 2/3 of your Estate. This Regulation shall apply to the succession of residents of Spain who die on or after 17 August 2015 but if the testator has chosen the national law in his will before this date that choice will be valid if it meets the conditions of the regulation or if it is valid in application of the rules of private international law which were in force, at the time when the will was made. INDUSTRY OR Business leasing has been defined by legal doctrine and jurisprudence in Spain, as the contract which provides not only a building, but also the business and activity itself, alive and active, that can be ran immediately, since a previous activity or business has already been developed.

THIS TYPE of lease is different from the lease of business premises, typically urban lease, which is the most common and well known, governed by Law 29/1994 Urban Lease Act (LAU). For example, the lease of a local to be used for the activity of a Bar-Restaurant, would normally bea lease of business premises. However, if the lease includes not only the building but also all the furniture, existing customers, etc. having a runningactivity, we could be facing an Industry lease. Industry Leases are expressly excluded from the LAU, being subject to the Spanish Civil and Commercial Code. So, in an industry leasing, the LAU would not necessarily apply regarding the deposits, duration, compensation, etc. This is a very important point. Also, some courtsdo not believethat the resolution or termination of anIndustry Lease ispossible by oral proceedings(for nonpayment of the agreed rent). Known as “express eviction”, this has some specialties that make it a much faster process. These courts understand that the eviction of industry leases must be processed by the corresponding declarative standard process, typically a much longer process. However, some judges do understand thatthe “express”procedure also applies to the leasing industry, givenchanges in the Civil Procedure Act. It is so important to the expatriate community to understand that in Spain, whatis relevant is not the name the parties give to the contract, if they call it industry – business or premises letting contract, the important thing is the real intention of the parties, in order to qualifythe contract one way or another.Given the uncertainty noted above, it is of vital importance to make the contract in the way

that best covers your interests. For all the above, it is very important to understand the difference between these two types of contracts,

if you are part of a lease of a local or a business you must protect your interests. Contact Us

Your Pension Fund – What to do? FOLLOWING THE raft of changes to pension rules that have come into place this year more people will have access to withdraw more cash from their pension funds

THE MESSAGE sent out by the government is that each individual should have ‘freedom and control’ of their own pension pots. This is great if the ‘individual’ has a strong understanding of the future with regards to life expectancy, future income requirements, taxation implications and inflation to name just a few factors. What is essentially evident now is the need for a qualified professional to help people make the correct decisions for them. In Summary: Full Access to UK Pension Pots now available from age 55 Company pension schemes can be transferred to take advantage of flexibility (unless they were public funded e.g. Armed Forces, Police) Not compelled to take annuity Pension pots can be inherited providing fantastic succession planning opportunities Now, even more importantly than ever before the importance of receiving advice and retirement planning before making a decision of what to do with your pension pot is absolutely critical. Questions to ask yourself are: Where will I live? What lump sum should be taken? What are the tax implications? What about my partner? How much income will I need in 5, 10, 15 or 20 years’ time? What happens if the Pot is empty at age 80 and I am still alive? If you feel like this and/or would just like a helping hand to review what you have, why not contact me and I will sit down and go through your portfolio with you. To blog or not to blog for inbound links?

business

There is no question about it... blogging is good for business. If you own a website that houses an inventory of items such as real estate, rentals, cars, health products and so forth - or you offer a service, then blogging can be your best friend. Blogging is a great way to show the world that you are an expert in your field, but it also provides you with “inbound links”, which are the most important factors for determining your website’s search engine ranking, popularity and importance. Over the past year, I have been teaching my clients to blog so that they can generate “quality” inbound links for their main websites. According to Hubspot, a company that was founded at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which creates original research on marketing disciplines including blogging, social media, email marketing, and lead nurturing, blogging is vital to creating inbound links. What are inbound links? Inbound links are super significant in search engine optimization (SEO). The number of inbound links is one indication of the popularity or importance of your website or page and is used by Google to determine the PageRank of your webpage. Search engines such as Google interpret a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. To make your blog do its

job properly, there are several factors that determine the value of your inbound links. The anchor text of your blog must have descriptive labeling words or content, which are geared towards the topic of your hyperlinks. That way, when you place your inbound link into the blog (the link that drives traffic back to your primary site) the search engine that sources it will consider it “relevant”; and being “relevant” has more influence with the search engine and it gives you better ranking within the search engine’s criteria. When search engine bots (i.e., spiders, crawlers, etc.) examine the anchor text of your blog to evaluate how relevant it is to the content on a website, it is important that your anchor text and blog content congruency are highly weighted in search engine results page (SERP) rankings, with respect to any given keyword query by a search engine user. If you do not do this process of “relevancy” to your blog and just stick in a bunch of inbound links to your blog, without anchor text, then the search engine bots will believe that you are “link baiting”. If your blog is not consistent to its theme or key content, and just jumps on any popular trending subject, your inbound link will not have “relevance” and the bots will just pass it over. Personally, I adore blogs, especially the ones hosted on Google’s platform called Blogger.com. These are highly adaptable blogs. They can be traditional blogs where

you log your relevant information in a “journal’ style process with dates. However, Blogger.com offers you many creative, alternative options that are too numerous to list here. Basically, you can design a free stand alone website that looks and behaves the same as an expensive website. I use them for all my websites from webzine to inventory mail order site. I can create so many SEO options from labels to clouds, descriptions to tags and locations, and everything is so easy. To me, who is a busy online person, blogs are easier to update and they are less work to build than traditional websites. Plus, blogs from Blogger.com are free, and free is good for the pocketbook. And, when you wish to truly personalize your blog, for only 8 euros a year you can attach a custom domain, if you buy your domain from a company that allows you to switch your hosting to the Blogger platform. Want to learn how to build a website that will cost you only 8 euros per year? Give me a shout.

In tune with Christmas by JACK TROUGHTON

MONTGO CHORALE is performing two December festive concerts in aid of charity offering traditional Christmas musical delights. Under the direction of Gordon Lawson, the choir will sing in the San Antonio Church in Denia on Saturday 5th December at 6pm and the Loreto Church – the Fisherman’s Church – in Javea Port on Sunday 13th December at 5pm. At Denia, Montgo Chorale will join the Orfeo de Denia for a festive concert and will sing Christmas carols; the Orfeo will offer various pieces in different styles including madrigals, classical, ‘zaruelas’, ‘villancicos’, and the ‘Agnus Dei’ from Karl Jenkins ‘Armed man’. Admission is 10€ and tickets can be purchased from Humpty Dumpty in Javea, Hostal Loreto, Denia, or at the door – to reserve a seat or for more information, call Jan Dewland on 96 577 0973 or email dewlandjan@hotmail.com. Proceeds will go to support a special project of the Asociacion Condenados al Bordillo, a charity supporting people in the town helping people with special needs live independently. The second performance is a carol concert and following the usual custom, the audience is invited to join in with many well-loved traditional carols. Entry is free; however, the audience will be invited to give generously to a retiring collection to support Caritas, the church’s own charity. The money will be used to help families in Javea that rely on the goodwill of local people to support them through financially difficult times.

Christmas cheers

VISITORS TO the Charity Shop of Calpe’s traditional ‘Christmas event’ can enjoy a glass of Buck’s Fizz while casting an eye over the seasonal stalls. The shop is open to spread early festive feelings of goodwill tomorrow (Saturday 21st November) between 11am and 1pm. And as well as an opportunity to browse the shop shelves, there are stalls selling cakes, jewellery, gifts and much more – there is also a draw to win a Christmas hamper. Find the shop in Galerias Mar Azul, Avenida Gabriel Miro, Calpe, opposite Druni.

Santa’s Sunday show SANTA CLAUS and various little helpers will be attending Jalon Valley HELP’s annual and ever popular Christmas Bazaar on Sunday (22nd November). Traditionally held on a Saturday, the calendar has been tweaked to shift the event by 24 hours – but the venue remains at the Pensionistas and Library building in Jalon and the doors will be open from 10am until 2pm. With just over a month to go until the ‘Big Day’, Father Christmas is just one of the attractions bringing a little early festive spirit to the Vall del Pop. And some things never change; there will be HELP’s traditional feel good factor accompanied by stalls, refreshments and bags of entertainment. Everyone is invited to enjoy the atmosphere, sample a coffee and a cake, and browse selections of Christmas cards and gifts. The bazaar is a true start to the festive season and an important fund raising day for a charity that gives an important helping hand to the local community.

Enter Aladdin’s cave of fun CARELINE THEATRE starts the New Year with a cracker of a show – the annual panto for 2016 polishes up the magic of the everenchanting ‘Aladdin’. by JACK TROUGHTON

THE HERO is the impoverished son of Widow Twanky, who is persuaded to enter a magical cave to retrieve an old oil lamp...a ‘genie-ous’ of an idea! Careline’s show is directed by Jim Sissens and choreographer by Suzanna Mace, bringing to life in true pantomime style one of the best-known tales from ‘The Book of One Thousand and One Nights’; a collection of Arabic folk stores. And the show has incorporated a treasure trove of ingredients to insure Aladdin is a fun-filled hit: including elements of the 1958 musical comedy version by Cole Porter; A touch of George Formby; and (naturally) a bit of Disney. The box office is open for bookings for a must-see family show at Careline’s Alcalali theatre. Aladdin runs from 14th January to 17th January with shows starting at 8pm and at 3pm for matinee performances at 3pm on 16th and 17th January. Nasturtiums

NASTURTIUMS are a useful plant in Spanish gardens.

by

Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

CAREFULLY PLANTED and cared for they can give bright colourful effects throughout the year. And they are not only just pretty plants but useful additions to salads Benefits of garden Nasturtiums. Bright colourful flowers. Single colours or mixed. Orange, yellow and red. Attractive leaves – green or green and cream variegated – contrast with nearby plants or create independent bold effects. Added to salads for eating the leaves, flowers and seed heads (substitute for capers) give a tangy and crisp effect. The seed heads can also be picked and pickled in brine for autumn and winter use. Cultivars Plant breeding has produced three useful forms – dwarf, bush and trailing. Raising Plants Plants are easy to raise from seed in the early Spring. Indeed if you have not picked the seed heads there is a good chance that they will self seed annually. Newly purchased seeds or seeds saved from the previous year can be sown – In pots in the greenhouse, coldframe or on a warm terrace. Plant in the final position when they have 4 leaves. Directly into the garden throughout the year. Nasturtiums are not too fussy about the soil they are in but do best in a rich loamy friable soil. How to Plant for Effect. In dedicated terrace pots, or flower beds in sun or semishade. In mixed pots or beds intermingled with other plants in small beds or at front of large beds. In pockets of rockery to drape over rocks. Beneath open branching shrubs and trained to grow through the shrub to flower on edge of branches. In the vegetable plot where nasturtiums have two important benefits. The wide open flowers with prominent stamens attract beneficial insects. They attract aphids, especially blackfly off other plants eg. Broad beans, spinach, artichokes, aubergines and are beneficial if planted along rows of tomatoes. If they become infested with blackfly you will probably find that the ants will clean them off, if not you could spray with a potassium soap and water solution. Watering and Feeding Nasturtium roots need to be kept moist at all stages of growth to achieve strong spreading colourful plants. They will respond well to a fortnightly feed in April/May and weekly from June to October. Dead Heading Removal of dead flowers and seed pods before they mature helps stimulate continuous flowering. Spraying Apart from what has already been said about nasturtiums in the vegetable garden spray plants in pots and flower beds with a dilute potassium soap or ecological washing up liquid solution as soon as any black fly appear.

He surely did! The 54 year old actor posed mostly solo, as when he was with the main group his face clearly showing his discomfort at his fashion statement bombing. Jennifer Lawrence in a white Dior Haute Couture chiffon dress with black boots and a pair of Pee-Jays? Nope!

Has Victoria got designs on being the Queen of Fashion?

IN FEBRUARY I did a piece on Lewis Hamilton breaking up with Nicole Scherzinger as I was fairly sure the break up was real and not one of their countless 25 minute break ups that were hard to track. Lewis has gone off and won the F1 title and Nicole now has a music and comedy based TV show called ´Bring the Noise´ on Sky 1 on Thursdays at 10pm. The couple were seen together at singer John Newman’s gig in London recently, and with Lewis talking about going into the music biz; will they do a duet together?

ENYA´S SONG ´Orinoco Flow´ became a global success in 1988, including making No1 in the UK, where it stayed at the top for three weeks. You may also know Enya´s music through the commercial for Radox which was equally a global success. She is back in the sharp end of music after a seven year gap with new album ´Dark Sky Island´ and said of the making of it “Once I arrive at the studio, the focus is totally on music and we work from 10 o’clock to half five or six.” What? No break for Lunch!

WHEN YOU see the word Beckham its likely David comes to mind and not his wife Victoria. The former Spice Girl was born in Harlow, Essex in 1974, then whilst in the middle of her spectacular career, at just 22 years of age, met dream boy David Beckham at a charity football match, and they started dating immediately. Victoria is now 41, and between her and her now ´ambassador for football´ husband, have three sons and a daughter. This story was inspired by the eldest of the boys, 16 year old Brooklyn, who last week presented his mother with Glamour magazines´ ´Woman Of The Year Award, ´ and its said that Victoria´s face filled with, for her an extremely rare smile. Chances are that young Brooklyn won himself a few more female admirers, as when presenting his fashion designer Mum with her award he said, “I’m so proud and I’m so happy to be here tonight … I love you.” Now that’s what I call an eighteen carat aahh bless. When Victoria was in the Spice Girls she was the one that was always frowning, and although it got her noticed, the expression ´face like a smacked a**e´ soon got bandied about, then when she bagged superhun David she won considerably more haters. With this scenario very firmly in place it’s quite possible that the family moving to America was instigated by Victoria, but has she done some job sliding up the slippery pole of fashion design over there or what! There was not too many dry eyes in the house when Victoria said on accepting her award “Running a business and being a mum wouldn’t be possible without David, not only is he the most incredible father, but he is supportive and someone who loves and inspires me every single day.” Gets you right there dunnit! ADDICTION TO fast food began around the mid 90´s, and the battle between the main players to promote their Extra Super Whoppa´s, or their Double Treble Gigantic thingamies has been seriously intense. I´m not sure the poor sods who are addicted to whatever even notice the latest spin on the same tired old product, but I have to admit the new Pizza Hut creation might well shake some trees. It’s a pizza box with three sliding compartments so you can fulfil your dream of having a set of pizza drawers, and it’s extremely eye-catching. Bet you go take a look!

THE ISLE of Wight Festival will be on June 9th-12th next year, and it’s been announced that ´Queen´ are to headline the Sunday night. The group have hired the services of many different top singers for their live work, including Roger Daltrey and Paul Carrick, the top session singer in the business. Next summer it will be the turn of 33 year old Adam Lambert, a man from Indiana, America who was runner-up in American Idol in 2009. Slightly worrying musical background, but he can carry a toon!

JAY Z and Beyonce married in 2008 and the world media soon started calling the singers their American Royalty. Beyonce is something very special but I’m not fan of alpha male Jay Z, although I have to admit that he’s the only famous peep I can recall who’s been given such a tag and has risen even slightly off their seat at the call. Proof of this comes when last weekend the Royal Couple dined amongst the masses at ‘The Boiling Crab’, a reasonably priced seafood ´CHAIN RESTAURANT´ in Koreatown, Los Angeles. Scary!

 Mercury sextiles with Mars bringing a new light on things and showing you a better way forward. In a busy astrological time Mercury backs what you have to say and opens your channels of freedom to have your own say. Be frank and tell it like it is because at last you will have the audience you need and then the result you have to have! The opposition with Uranus midweek shows others that you are not to be messed with and that there is a method in what people may say is your madness. Known to be stubborn to the last, you are showing your full colours and with every will in the World it is a time to let bygones be bygones and to believe in the benefits this will bring you. Trusty Mercury aligns with your opposing sign of Sagittarius at the beginning of a week where complication is the keynote. Above all, this is a time to keep your temper, but not a time to simply wait and see. Whilst better times are just around the corner for you there are hurdles this week that need to be cleared if you are to stay out there and on track! Your empathy and warm caring nature is called upon to help someone who has made a drama out of a crisis. Protected by the Moon and strongly directed by your strong psychic energies, you know very well that there is much more to all this than meets the eye, but you also know that somebody has to assert rights and take control of the matter. As the Sun enters into Sagittarius the wisdom of the past can be used in a positive and inspiring way. You are entering a highly creative phase and need to have the backing of those whose approval appears not to be forthcoming. Let nothing throw you off track as you stick to your principles and then dig those heels in if you have to. Mercury sextiles Ceres and this starts a chain reaction that will work to your advantage. Governing time and motion Ceres is the strong backbone to any timed decision, and takes you back to your routine. You are taking on too much, and might have bitten off more than you can chew....but something has to be done and you are the person for the job. Venus conjuncts Jupiter, planet of good fortune and good luck, bringing love into the deal. The Goddess of Love and Passion doesn’t do things by halves, and you may have been a bit hasty when you weighed up the pros and the cons. Give someone the benefit of the doubt; a hefty dose of serendipity covers all affairs of the heart, for good reason. There is a rare midweek trine of your two planetary leaders, Mars and Pluto this week. Emotions will run wild as you opt for the correct decision, which will be governed by your heart. Forget what wagging tongues are saying because they do not know the full story as you do. Everything happens for a reason and that reason may yet be fully known Both Mercury and the Sun enter into your sign this week, each bringing something new to the table. You are starting to realise why things had to come to a head, and why things went wrong. Only the truth can win now, and some garbled version of it appears too little and far too late. The energy of the Sun illuminates fully a new way ahead for you. Your planetary leader, Saturn, takes on Mars in an action which brings timbre to an already volatile problem. You appear to be dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t in a no win no lose situation. When all is said and done remember that, above all, you have the upper hand and you must do whatever it takes for all who are concerned. The Venus opposition in Uranus brings a subtle touch of love to a romantic situation. You have tested someone to the limits just lately, and they seem to have readily taken up the challenge. However this leaves you not knowing exactly where you are right now, and unsure how to ring the changes if this is really going to work for you both. Neptune squares on Mars and Saturn at the end of the week, mixing sage wisdom with sheer determination. As you are unsure of things right now it would be wise to take time to see things from another direction and maybe from a distance, before you know your next move. Sit tight and let everything wash over you before you make a decisive choice.

If It’s Your Birthday This Week Take time to think about things because a decisive

mood will be shortly be out there for you as an offer is heralded and based on your true talents. This astrological year sees you believing more in yourself and depending less on others!

Earth angel

EARTH ANGELS are residents of this wonderful World that we live in. Whilst most Angels are living on a different plane and on a far differing vibration to that calibrated on Earth it is usual to invite them to Earth if they are needed for whatever assurance or intervention, and they do very much specialise in both these endearing categories. The mighty Archangels are those who have the freedom to enter this sphere of Earth. Known to be our closest and mightiest connection with the Angelic Hosts, it is the Archangels with their elongated vertical wings that flap themselves into sink or swim, do or die, and all those life threatening incidents experienced here on Earth. The Earth angel is a different kettle of fish. These assisting and guiding angels are implanted here on Earth and are in human form. Consequently they can have and they do activate an immediate connection to resolve specific problems thrown up by the World. Goodness knows there are so many problems, but the Earth angel knows when to act, and when to act fast whenever they are needed. Only a call away, all Angels are on patrol of various prescribed sections of the World, activated by particular jurisdiction. They may have protective energies for certain Peoples, or countries, and are geared to cope with the specified problem as it occurs. The Earth angel is living life undercover here on Earth and they are on standby. Tuned to human vibration they have been fully briefed to life at a human pace, and are drilled in the speedy recognition of impending disaster. Taught to cope with whatever comes along, the Earth angel is honed into the process that saves souls; when it is not in their blueprint to be in danger, fear or mortal threat. Call them lifesavers if you like, if it is destiny for someone to survive, an Earth angel can strike to save life thus over ruling the odds or the mechanics of certain death. I owe my life to such an Earth angel. I was in Zaragoza lecturing in an Angel Works course. My morning stroll found me noticing a branch of my favourite coffee shop, and needing a caffeine fix to help me focus on the rigours of the day, I walked towards it. There was much traffic on the road and it was obviously going to be a hot day though it was only really early morning. The rush to school and work, and early rising tourists filled the street. I noticed a busy road ahead of me but not that immediately ahead was a contra flow bus lane. A bus was speeding towards me and I wasn’t even looking in the right direction. I stepped out and was pulled back with an indescribable force. How I kept my balance I do not know, but I just about did just as a bus flew by. I felt that hot diesel smell as it passed me. I crossed to a road island and immediately looked behind to thank whoever had pulled me back, only to find that I was in fact all alone with nobody anywhere near me. I was left with a strange feeling of grateful survival, a hefty dose of adrenaline pumping through my body, and a feel good factor of being lucky to be alive. Someone had decided I was not going to be a traffic accident that day and I can only say that my life was most definitely saved, and both rapidly and efficiently too. I was able to say thank you in a message sent not only on my behalf but also on behalf of those who would also be saved by similar actions in the future...don’t know where, don’t know when! But nothing but angelic intervention saved me that day. The angels are poised to have to interact with us mortals in peril here on Earth and they do a very good job as well. Earth angels are there around us and they are used to taking control whenever they have to. Spanning the World they take on responsibility and resolution in their stride, no job too big and none too small.

Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com

KENNY, MY five year old son has started to say that there is somebody in his bedroom at night. He won’t sleep without a light on now and I am wondering if this could be his grandpa who died last February? Siv O. Hi Siv, yours was a long letter which I have had to shorten. I know that many from the Spirit World come through whilst we are asleep. They are told not to disturb us when we are awake as it can bring fear. I would like to think that this could be grandpa and the timescale is just about right too. Monitor the situation and if your son becomes distressed we can take further action together. In the mean time ask your son if he can draw who it is in his bedroom; this will start the ball rolling, and you can discuss!

Playa Productions LET ME introduce you to Playa Productions and it’s creative Director – Lee Cook. by TERRIE HUGHES AFTER TRAINING in the UK at the prestigious “North Herts Centre for the Arts,” Lee quickly took to the industry performing for countless production companies under many dance contracts. With a strong background in the Arts, his main passion comes from the world of Tap - and owes a lot of his inspiration to the greats, Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. Using his craft, Lee started producing and choreographing his own shows. After having successfully toured the UK and Europe Lee has decided to bring his talent to work here in Spain. With his newly formed company Playa Productions Lee is bringing a huge catalogue of entertainment to share with you all. With a debut performance of “Juke Box Jive” taking place at the “Matrix Madhouse Studio” on the 26th and 27th November. The show takes you on a journey through the 50’s full of song and dance with a twist of modern artists like Ollie Murs, Rhiana, Lady GaGa etc; All set on a stage with a feeling of being in an American Diner. Tickets to the show include a 2 course American style meal to add to the authenticity of the evening. Then will finish with an audience participation of dancing to some very popular music to get your feet tapping.

Party Time !!!! Lee is hoping to continue a great partnership and residency throughout 2016. I had the great pleasure of working alongside Lee in October. After only being in the country for a couple of months he had been invited to dance with the line up of stars at the annual Help for Heroes Show at Benidorm Palace. I watched him and a team of great dancers perform on the stage supporting Stevie Spit. What amazed me was the fact that with very little rehearsal they were able to bring a dance routine together that left you spell bound and wanting more. There are already plans in place for next season, Lee and his team are excited to show you all something completely new and innovative along the South East Coast of Spain. From Showgirls and Tap, to Street Dance and Ballet - Playa Productions has it all. High quality music arrangements, beautifully designed costumes, full scale stage sets and world class choreography from the man himself and his team. Be sure to check out the Playa Production Facebook page for upcoming events and experience a truly new generation of entertainment in Spain. Coming soon our website is in the

Can’t scroll on Google Chrome DEAR AUNTY Virus. After having Windows 10 installed I find I cannot scroll either up or down on Google Chrome. To rectify the problem I uninstalled Chrome then reinstalled it but the problem is still there. Do you have any ideas as to what the problem could be? Malc

Aunty says:First, you need to run Chrome in a Chrome Incognito window. (right click on your Chrome icon, and select New Incognito Window). If the scroll bars work in the Incognito window then one of your extensions is causing the issue. So it is then a question of going through your Chrome extensions (chrome://extensions/) and disabling them, one at a time, and restarting Chrome, tofind out which extension is causing the issue.

Tune up

HI AUNTY. Sometimes, when my computer starts on Opera, it freezes and makes a beep noise. After a few minutes it goes OK.I run Viper and Tune up but it still sometimes freezes. Ideas? Steve, Benidorm Aunty says:If you are having problems

with Opera, you can always try to uninstall and reinstall it. You may also try resetting Opera. Close all running instance of Opera. Go to the installation folder of Opera -usually C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\Opera\Opera\. Delete the Operapref. ini file Not all “Tune Up” tools solve all problems

iPhone storage HI AUNTY: I have an iPhone 4 with 6Gb. I have closed lots of Apps but still it says I have used 5.0GB and only 360MB left. Where has the other 740MB gone? But when I look at usage it shows 600MB for photos 166 for Facebook. 97 for Google etc. only adding up to 1.4GB. Where has the other 4.6GB gone? Regards, Robert

Aunty says: You are not missing any storage space. Don’t forget that the iPhone needs to run the IOS operating system, which will take up some storage, as will any other system required applications. Although your personal storage area may only show “1.4gb”, this may only be data in your personal area, and not any apps or music stored elsewhere. People also often confuse storage space and memory space. Closing apps will stop the apps running in “memory” but it will not remove them from storage.

Mediterranean Stir Fry

This is a Mediterranean version of those egg fried rice dishes that are so popular in Chinese restaurants.

1 medium red pepper de-seeded and diced 1 medium courgette, sliced lengthways and diced 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped. 200g peeled cooked prawns 1 egg, beaten Salt and pepper The grated rind and juice of a small lemon A mug of long grain rice Oil for frying

2. Meanwhile, using a wok or a large frying pan, fry the diced pepper, courgettes and onion in a splash oil until they have taken on a little colour. Season with salt and pepper then remove from the pan and set aside. 3. Add the beaten egg to the same pan and cook as for an omelette then, using a wooden spatula, break the cooked egg into small pieces and set aside. 4. When the rice is cooked, strain it then rinse it through with a kettleful of boiling water. 5. Add more oil to the pan and, over a high heat, add the rice, prawns and diced vegetables and stir fry for 3-4 minutes. Finally, add the lemon rind, chopped egg and a little lemon juice and continue to stir fry until everything is piping hot. Serve immediately.

1. Place the rice in a large pan of boiling water and simmer for 6-7 minutes until just cooked.

Serves: 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes

This one uses red peppers and courgettes, but you could substitute peas, sweet corn or aubergine if you prefer, if you want to spice it up a bit, try adding some finely chopped red chilli.

Short text and translation I WROTE this text a little while ago so the personal information is no longer accurate, but I hope you enjoy it just the same!

This weekend has been very special because Friday was my

mother’s birthday. She was ninety years old and all the family has come to Spain to celebrate it. We are not a very big family but we live in many parts of the world. My brother and sister live in English, but I have nieces and nephews, my mother’s grandchildren, en Ecuador, Peru and Mallorca. We decided to celebrate the birthday here as it is the most convenient place to bring all the family together for a weekend. My mother has been staying in my house, but the rest of the family has been in the same hotel. It’s just as well that the weather has been kind to us and everyone has been able to enjoy the sunshine. We have spent a lot of time having drinks on the hotel terrace and chatting together. The big celebration was Saturday evening in an Australian restaurant. The supper was terrific with a lot of delicious food and excellent service. They made a birthday cake in the shape of a boomerang which was good fun. My mother was quite emotional when she had all the presents and applause from all the family. After the dinner the younger members of the family went out to dance in the discotheques, whilst the older members fell into our beds exhausted. Now we are preparing the hundredth birthday party.

Pets In Spain autumn dinner and dance

LA MARINA based animal rescue charity Pets In Spain held their autumn dinner and dance fundraising evening on Monday 2nd November at La Marina Sports Complex and raised an amazing 500€ to help rescued animals. The evening was enjoyed by over 70 attendees and, after a delicious two course meal, they were entertained by the wonderful sounds of Diverse Duo who very kindly gave their services for the night to the charity. A raffle was held, with prizes, including a free meal provided by the Big Eat restaurant in La Marina. Pets in Spain is committed to the rescue and re-homing of abandoned and displaced animals, and also runs a very successful feral cat sterilisation program in the La Marina area. The charity is registered with the Valencia regional government and provides the best of care with a great team of foster carers and all necessary veterinary treatment and rehabilitation for an animal. The charity also has amazing success with reuniting lost pets with their owners, thanks to long-established Europewide networking connections and collaboration with many other animal rescue organisations. The charity runs two modern charity shops in the area to provide much needed funds. Any donations of clothing, household items, and furniture, are very gratefully received, and collection can be arranged for large furniture items. For more information about the Pets In Spain registered charity, and the many different animal rescue and welfare projects, please call 645 46 92 53, email info@petsinspain.com or see the website: www.petsinspain.com.

Blood donor dogs THERE IS no dog blood bank on the Costa Blanca. If a dog needs a blood transfusion where does the blood come from? by PATRICIA THOMPSON THE PETS In Spain animal charity responds to appeals from vets for a dog donor to provide blood for transfusions to help save the life of a family pet. Rescued dogs in the care of the charity have donated blood for seriously injured and chronically ill dogs, much to the relief of worried pet dog owners. This service by the charity is free of charge and collaborating veterinary clinics will carry out free blood tests on a dog that is brought in prior to the extraction of blood. A donor dog reunion took place this week at the Pets In Spain charity shop in La Marina urbanisation which brought together previously rescued dogs that have donated blood. The charity has launched a new long term campaign for owners to register their dog on the dog donor register in order to meet the demand for much needed life saving blood transfusions. Pets In Spain animal charity does not receive any grants from

local or regional government and is totally self funding relying on two charity shops, private donations and sponsors to fund their many animal welfare projects. To register your dog on the blood

donor register, or for more information about the Pets In Spain animal charity call 645 46 92 53, email info@petsinspain.com or visit their web site www. petsinspain.com.

Taking care of yourself during winter

AS THE Costas get ready for the colder snap approaching, younger residents are being asked to remember their senior neighbours, who are less able to cope with the drop in temperatures, and may need more support. by Jeanette Rice Although it is widely accepted that living on the Costa Blanca has tremendous benefits with the warm climate and healthy air, many older residents struggle to access services such as doctors, pharmacists and supermarkets during the winter season. For some senior residents this year may be particularly difficult, with the changes that have occurred with the UK winter fuel allowance. Many may feel that having heating is an expense that they cannot afford. At RTN we have put together a small list of things that you can all do to keep healthy and mobile, but, in particular, this is for the senior members of our community. Top of our list is getting to the doctors and having the Flu vaccination, if you haven’t already had it. Flu can be more severe in certain people,

such as anyone aged 65 and over, pregnant women, children and adults with an underlying health condition (particularly long-term heart or respiratory disease), children and adults with weakened immune systems. Anyone in these higher risk groups is more likely to develop potentially serious complications of flu, such as pneumonia. In some areas the tiled pavements become extremely slippery before the sun reaches them which means that the elderly may struggle to get out and about, particularly walking their dog, collecting repeat prescriptions, or just needing to see a friendly face. Always be on the look-out for signs that something might be wrong, especially when the weather is cold, such as blinds being closed during the day, lights on during the day, or no lights on in the evening. It is important to prevent people from becoming cold in the first place. Family, friends

and neighbours in the community can look out for those who might be at risk from the cold. Prevention is always easier than cure. Hypothermia - You may not actually feel cold but if you sit in a cold room and do little or nothing to keep warm then you may run the risk of becoming hypothermic or becoming ill with bronchitis or pneumonia. Both are cold-related illnesses. Danger signs include drowsiness, cold skin under clothing, slurred speech, and the person not feeling cold even though the room is freezing. Guidelines for keeping warm include: Set your thermostat to around 21ºC (70ºF) and heat all the rooms you use in the day.

If you can’t heat all your rooms make sure you keep your living room warm throughout the day and heat your bedroom before going to bed. Try to keep a temperature of above 18°C (65°F) in your bedroom overnight. If you use a fire or heater in your bedroom during winter, open the window or door a little at night for ventilation. Wear plenty of thin layers, rather than one thick one. Wear clothes made of wool, cotton, or fleecy synthetic fibres. Stay warm in bed with bed socks, thermal underwear and a nightcap or headscarf.

Life Coach

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

Where did we go wrong?

Our two daughters have turned out to be a bitter disappointment. They’ve had every opportunity imaginable. We bought them cars, paid for their mobile telephones, gave them deposits for houses, which they frittered away on clothes, partying and holidays. Our eldest has ended up living on benefits with her deadbeat boyfriend, and our youngest is refusing to find a job, as she says she will also do better on the dole. We are heartbroken. We didn’t raise them this way. I am sorry to have to tell you this, but children need to be taught how to prepare to live independently, right from the start. You gave them every material thing they needed, rather than teaching them how to be responsible. It comes as no surprise that they are taking the easy option, choosing to live on benefits. It might be too late to help them now, but in the meantime you must stop the handouts, and help them to realise the value of money.

The other man I have been ‘the other man’ in a relationship with a married woman for seven years. I want her to leave her husband, but she feels she has everything to lose. We have talked about marriage, and having our own family, and she says she dearly wants a life with me, but it’s not possible. I don’t know what to do, but I am at the end of my patience, and something needs to change. You are obviously not happy with the situ-

ation. You have two choices here. You can leave this unfulfilled relationship, and look for someone who wants what you want, or, you can decide to settle for the disappointing relationship you already have with this woman. If you don’t know what to do, you could have a few weeks separation (with no contact), and see how you both feel at the end of it. In the meantime, I think you would benefit from talking to someone. A trained counsellor will help you to work through your feelings.

Marbella chosen as the location for new Spy Drama by KEITH NICOL

OVER THE last couple of months two English language, action adventure style, feature films have been completed on the Costa Blanca; The Cucaracha Club from Siesta Productions and Trained To Kill from Bill Little and Scot Films. Both local production companies are looking towards future products, as is Paco Soto, an Elche based film director, who directed and produced Spain’s first Crowdfunded film, Operaciones Especiales. Such is the interest in filming in Spain that leading TV production company Wanda Halcyon Television of Europe have announced that their latest political thriller “Operating Naked – A Black-Bag Job,” by espionage author Jon Augustine, will be filmed in Marbella, Toronto and Washington DC. This edge-of-your-seat drama about US operatives during the controversial impeachment hearings from 1997 to 1999, is based on the author’s clandestine days as a Special Operations officer in the US Army Intelligence Support Activity (USAISA), and is a fictional account of real life events, many of which occurred in Marbella. The show’s author, Jon Augustine, whose credits include the US Television hit show “Burn Notice” (2007 to 2013), is a former spy and USAISA officer. This top-secret Special Operations Unit collects actionable intelligence for counter-terrorist operations and their operatives are legendary for their self-reliance and specialized skill-set. “Black-bag jobs” are clandestine operations to obtain information, sometimes illegally, but always highly

dangerous. A critical part of the story takes place in Marbella, where the main protagonist interacts with members of Syrian Intelligence prior to the World Trade Center terrorist attack. Marbella acts as a modern day “Casablanca” for many factions of spies in this riveting espionage thriller. Pat Andrew, Showrunner for Wanda Halcyon, explains; “This is an exciting and relevant espionage story of political intrigue, subterfuge and murder, all taking place during the US impeachment hearings held in the 1990s, which gives the viewer an insider’s look at espionage and political intrigue on a global scale.” Marbella will be the base not only for much of the action, but also for the production, creating jobs and offering exciting opportunities for Marbella residents. The production team are currently casting for lead rôles and location scouting. Casting for supporting parts will take place in November and actors based on the Costa Blanca are also encouraged to contact them for more information. Wanda Halcyon Television of Europe, which is majority owned by Wanda Shanghai Inc, acquired the rights to produce the television series for worldwide distribution in 2014 and have expressed their excitement about living and working in the beautiful town of Marbella. Wanda Halcyon Television International of Europe is a production company that produces high-quality realism based drama with a focus on character-driven plots in a serial television format. Author Jon Augustine is one of the founders of the Long Island Spy Museum.

The team competed in the race at Parcent, having already finished a similar event in Benissa in October and will take part in a third race in Moraira next May. The races involve a series of demanding tasks, including an obstacle course which involved crawling through mud, running through fire and scaling high walls. The team was sponsored by family and friends and Continental Wealth Management

added 2,000€ to the total. Tony Grande of Make A Smile said: “I can’t believe the whole team managed to complete both these strenuous races. The money they raised will be spent on food, winter fuel, and other essentials for the children in EMAUS homes and help support our self-sufficiency farm project in Relleu. “Watching these youngsters – we call them ‘Junior Warriors’ – helping other children not as fortunate as themselves was a wonderful way to spend my Sunday.” For more information about the charity go to www.facebook.com/makeasmile.es

Sizzling sunshine

THE INDIAN summer allowed 74 members of U3A Marina Baixa to enjoy a rescheduled Autumn Barbeque last Saturday.

by JACK TROUGHTON

Bad weather in October forced the event to be cancelled but with a good forecast; Maureen and John Barrett hosted the al fresco party in the garden of their home in Alfaz del Pi. Committee members and their partners arrived early to help prepare the food and decorate the garden – it was all hands to the pump – peeling, chopping, slicing, and preparing meats, salads and desserts. Everyone arrived promptly at 1pm and set up table and chairs before enjoying the food. Afterwards, there was a fun game guessing the contents of 28 bags hanging in the gardens

– and hostess Maureen won two raffle prizes and generously returned them to be auctions; the proceeds going to U3A’s 10th Anniversary fund for next year’s celebration. U3A Marina Baixa usually holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of each month at the auditorium in the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi, however, the next meeting is on Monday 30th November, starting promptly at 11am. Anyone wishing to join U3A will be given a warm welcome. To find out more information visit the website www.u3amarinabaixa.com or the Facebook page – those without internet access can call Secretary Joan Flint on 96 586 1226 or 663 637 167.

Students in the pink SENIOR STUDENTS at Xabia International College marked Breast Cancer Awareness Day with fun activities to raise money for charity. by JACK TROUGHTON

ENDING THE first half term of the school year, they combined Halloween with ‘Wear It Pink’ and raised 290€ for the MABS Cancer Support Group. Students – and teachers – paid 1€ to arrive at the Javea school in fancy dress and a cake sale also contributed to the charity total. And for the last hour of the day there were a number of challenges enabling students to score points for their school house – these included traditional apple bobbing and ‘beat the goalie’. However, the most popular was ‘sponge the teacher’. Fiona Phillips, head teacher at XIC’s senior school, said: “Thanks go to our senior students for organizing the afternoon’s activities, and for helping raise money for such an important cause.

Watch out – thieves about! by JACK TROUGHTON

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH outlined safety precautions and how to avoid becoming victims of crime in a presentation to U3A Vall del Pop. Guest speaker at the November meeting was Adam Stone from Neighbourhood Watch Spain – who explained the organisation was already active along the coast in towns like Javea and Calpe; but not yet in the Jalon Valley. And after a number of robberies recently reported, he advised on how to keep safe and help prevent crime affecting neighbourhoods. Adam said that many urbanisations had a resident looking after post boxes and other duties for the community – he could contact the nearest Neighbourhood Watch and start a group member-

ship for the community. He said it helped residents become aware of any particular security issues and encouraged police to patrol the area. The organisation could also advise on specific problems as well as using common sense – lock doors when spending time in the garden to help prevent an opportunist theft; keep handbags zipped when out in public and do not keep a wallet in a back pocket. A full resume of Adam’s presentation is available in the U3A’s November newsletter, currently posted on the website www.u3avalldelpop.com. Anyone wishing to find out more information about launching a local of Neighbourhood Watch scheme can discover the closest branch and more information on www.nhwinspain.com.

The group was led by June Booth at Orba Civic Centre and hope to have earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records by joining 7,500 people dancing at the same time to the tune of ‘Uptown Funk’. More than 200 people turned out to support the Orba dancers as they worked through a complicated routine – raising more than 400€ for Children in Need.

Remembrance Day in Moraira HUNDREDS OF people marked Remembrance Day by attending a special service at the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de los Desamparados in Moraira. It was the first ceremony organised by Teulada Moraira Town Hall and wreaths of poppies were laid in honour of the fallen in wars and other conflicts. And the service was jointly performed by Father Marcus Ronchetti, Senior Chaplain of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy, and the parish priest Father Vicente Solera. The ceremony was accompanied by music and the singing of the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir. Readings were made by members of the Royal British legion, the Royal Naval Association, the Royal Air Forces Association, and the Aircrew Association. And the customary two-minute silence was held, started with the playing of the Last Post and ending with the call of Reveille. The red poppy has become the familiar emblem of Remembrance Day, 11th November, and is named in the First World War poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. The flowers bloomed in the battlefields and the brilliant colour became a symbol of blood sacrificed – it is now the mark of remembrance, peace and reconciliation. King George V started the Remembrance Day service tradition in 1919. It marks the end of the Great War when hostilities ceased on 11th November when the armistice was agreed “at the 11th hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.”

Return of the King SIMON PATRICK’S tribute to the Elvis Presley – the King of rock ‘n’ roll – had people dancing in the aisles at a fund raising concert organised by Teulada Moraira Lions Club.

The theatre at Espai La Senieta was packed as Simon and support act, Welsh duo Mills and Boone, made a storming return two years after first appearing for the Lions. And the evening was a huge success in contributing 1,350€ to Lions’ coffers which will be used funding charitable projects and ongoing work in the community. For details of all future fund-raising events, Teulada Moraira Lions Club on Facebook or join the mailing list by sending an ‘add me’ email to mailinglist.tmlions@gmail.com.

Car Broker Spain

IT’S FIESTA time again at Car Broker Spain, Benijófar!

ON SATURDAY 21st November Car Broker Spain is inviting everyone to join them in a celebration of a good first year of trading by enjoying a free Spanish food and wine tasting event at their showroom in Benijófar. Giant paellas and speciality tapas, courtesy of Bar Sonia, will be served, along with wines from the Alicante and Rioja regions. “It’s our way of saying thank you to friends and clients for a great start to a new business and celebrating life in Spain “ says Andy, who opened this, his first car showroom, in February. Apart from selling quality pre-owned cars, the business has become renowned for its “GlassWax” car treatment, a nano-technology polymer paint sealant that protects your car’s paintwork from rain, dirt and sun damage, and gives the paint a lustrous finish. It also cuts down on the cleaning time on your car as, after it has been treated, a spritz over with de-mineralized water at a jet wash should be sufficient to remove all dirt and insect debris. Other services offered at Car Broker Spain include headlight re-furbishing, windscreen wiper and bulb replacement (very important at this time of year), supply and fitting of new batteries, servicing, valeting, including cleaning and conditioning of leather, and sourcing luxury cars. So, on Saturday 21st November, the party starts at 12noon until 4pm. Join in the fun!

Making kids smile at Christmas

MAKE A Smile has launched its ninth annual Christmas Bag Appeal to collect goodies for the youngsters cared for in EMAUS homes. by Jack Troughton

The charity’s Tony and Lucy Grande launched this year’s appeal on Remembrance Sunday and donations can be left at collection points along the coast. Tony said: “This is a very important part of our year’s events. It provides the homes with much-needed essentials. “The children all get new pjs, slippers, underwear, batteries, school supplies and of course Christmas and three Kings presents,” he said. “The homes get topped up with gels, shampoos, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other essentials, which last for quite a few months until the spring.” Donated items can be left in bags and donations will be sorted by charity volunteers and EMAUS carers. For more information or to find the nearest drop-off point, call Tony, lucy or Gemma on 96 583 6814 or email info@makeasmile.es.

Benitachell Bowls Club report by PATRICIA THOMPSON

ON TUESDAY BBC celebrated the newest members of Bowls International’s prestigious Hot Shots Club. During BBC’s Founders Competition in October lead Pat Pittaway (Javea Green), second Jak Logan and skip Robin Baxter scored a maximum of 9 shots in a single end. Club Captain John Hendrick presented them with their much valued certificates and enamel badges marking their achievement. “JAGUARS” V “EL CID” Top Team went to Jack Chamberlain, Trevor Rush, and Pam Coombe, who won 26 – 11 against a strong El Cid team. Overall score was El Cid 0 -Jaguars 10 “TIGERS” V “FINCA GUILA” The rearranged away game with Finca Guila Swallows resulted in BBC Tigers taking all 10 points. The Challenger side lead all the way until the last end when the score was 18 all but unfortunately lost by 2 shots. “BBC LIONS” V “JAVEA GREEN QUARTS” Javea green Opals fielded a very strong team, BBC Lions were a few players short of their normal squad, so called in the ringers and managed 4 points. Overall score Javea Quarts, 62 shots and 6 points. – BBC Lions 58 shots and 4 points. The challengers lost on the last end 19 – 15.

“BENITACHELL” V “BONALBA” WINTER LEAGUE GAME BBC were at home to Bonalba and having won three games in a row they hoped to make it a 100% home record. There was no Berleen League this week so a friendly game had been arranged. A first 12 point win of the season brought BBC to second position in the League table. The BBC friendly game had a resounding victory 30-9. For a full update and further information about forthcoming games and results, please visit www.benitachellbowlsclub.

Alfaz Fantasy Football League IN THE RTN K.O. Cup Competition, Second Round, it is down to the last 64 teams. The junior teams, Jack’s Lads on Tour, Rocky’s Super Spurs and Casie’s Moon Kitten, all progressed into the next round where they will be joined by Roos & Woos Wombles, if they can see off Waverley Wanderers in one of the three drawn games. A second drawn game involved one of our ladies teams, Lesley’s Laws Lads, who have to take on Brendan’s Teppanyaki’s Gunners after drawing the first game 36-36. If Lesley’s team get through there will be ten ladies teams in the next round. The third replay is between Bentley’s Boys and Bone Breakers, who finished up level at 33-33. All the replays will take place this weekend. The present leaders of the Fantasy League Joe’s Keith Lard F.C., were, surprisingly, knocked out 29-20 by Kevin’s team, I Wish Rovers, who are currently lying in 124th place in the league which means that Leon’s team, Racing Sandancer, have become the new favourites to win this prestigious competition by seeing off Bella’s Babes by 20 pts to 3. The lowest placed team in the league, Mark’s No Bad Loser,(286th), scraped through beating the Bootwinners 10-9. The draw for the 3rd round of our RTN K.O. Cup Competition will soon be on our website www.alfazffl.com or just pop into one of our bars which display all the results on their notice boards.

Brazil nuts by ALAN PALMER

It is a good job that all the action took place off the circuit this week, otherwise this could have been the most boring weekend in recent weeks. I do not suppose you know, but apparently Spain has declared war on Italy. This may come as a massive surprise to our respective heads of state, who may not have been informed, but if you listen to Valentino Rossi, the works Honda bikes, competing in MotoGP, and ridden by two Spaniards are deliberately failing to beat the other works Yamaha, which happens to be also ridden by a Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo, Rossi, of course riding the other Yamaha. Now it is fair to say that the Hondas did not beat Jorge in Cheste recently, HOWEVER it is also more than fair to point out that Dani Pedrosa won two of the three MotoGPs that preceded the race in Valencia, and Marc Marquez executed a demon last lap overtaking manoeuvre to deny Lorenzo the win in the other race., and the guy who dropped Rossi into fourth place in that race just happened to be another Italian, called Andrea Iannone and he was riding an ITALIAN Ducatti. Good conspiracy then!! NOT Meanwhile ,on the outskirts of Sao Paulo, at

one of Formula 1’s iconic, and most spectacular venues, with the tower blocks of the city rising in the background, it was business as usual for the Mercedes drivers Triple World Champion Lewis Hamilton, and his team mate Nico Rosberg, front row of the grid, and job done for another weekend, except, once again it was Nico in front of Lewis. I just hope Lewis has not given up for the rest of the season, the last race in Abu Dhabi is usually a cracker, and one at which he is normally very competitive. Elsewhere didn’t really matter, Ferrari have second in the Constructors Championship, Williams have secured Third. Once again the Force India cars were impressive, and you have to look forward to next season, when they are likely to be called Aston Martins, whilst it was fantastic to see that two former, and incredibly distinguished World Champions could overlook the problems they have suffered this season when Fernando Alonso had to park his Maclaren on the first

lap of qualifying, and he was fortunate that one of the marshals was able to offer him his folding chair, and Fernando sat out the session dozing in the Brazilian sunshine. He later joined team mate Jenson Button, and they both highjacked the podium, linking arms and leaping onto the top spot, which , realistically, is the only time they are likely to get there this season, but early reports suggest that the new year may be a very different story. The main interest over the weekend seemed to centre around how the Paris terrorist tragedy should be recognized, and whether Lewis Hamilton was fit to continue in his role as an FIA Road Safety Ambassador, having scraped his €1.5 million supercar against some parked cars in a Monaco side street earlier in the week. Bearing in mind Monaco backstreets are about as good as here in Benidorm, the occasional minor prang is nothing exceptional, unless you happen to be the World Champion, and the inference in

Pinatar Pirates CC are ECCL League Division 2 Champions 2015

A WEEK ago Pinatar Pirates Cricket Club were crowned the ECCL Division 2 champions in their inaugural season; a great achievement. So, for the last league game of the season, a strong La Manga team travelled to Pinatar Arena, San Pedro, to play the league champions. The Pirates were keen not to let La Manga dampen their celebratory mood especially as they were to be presented with the league trophy after the game when the real celebrations were to commence. However the first victory went La Manga as they won the toss and the Pirates were put in to bat, a decision which the La Manga captain was soon beginning to regret. Early on it was all joy when both openers were dismissed quickly, but those jubilant celebrations proved for nothing when Gopi Singh (57) and Elliott Banks (95) ripped into the La Manga bowling attack. La Manga did manage to slow down the run rate after the drinks interval when Gopi Singh was bowled out but all their incoming batsmen contributed to the score helping the league champions, the Pinatar Pirates, reach a massive 276 inf their 40 overs. In reply, the opposition stared well but, when Elliott Banks removed opener Stuart Simkins for 18 and then Tom Vine with the very next ball for a first ball golden duck, the jubilant Pirates knew they had removed the sting from La Manga’s tail. David Williams (81 not out) was once again the visitors’ saviour, batting the whole 40 overs. La Manga batsmen knew the game could not be won and they went into blocking mode to salvage a losing draw to take back to La Manga. Youngsters Rupert James and Charlie Hunt showed fighting spirit as they dug in and showed some lengthy resistance but they could not see it through, both getting out before the end of play, La Manga finished on 141 for 4 in their 40 overs. The champions dominated this game and were happy to finish their league campaign with a winning draw, taking 17 points from the games while La Manga CC finished the day with 7 points. The Pinatar Pirates were presented with the League Cup by ECCL committee member David Riley and soon afterwards the celebrations started and carried on late into the night. It was a fantastic first season for the Pirates who would like to thank the ECCL committee for its guidance and help during this first season. The Pinatar Pirates would also like to give a special thanks to its sponsors for all their help and support throughout the season, Elliott Estates UK, Curry Leaf restaurant in Los Alcázares and Bar Ricos in Torrevieja. Anyone interested in cricket, playing, watching or seeing the great facilities at Pinatar Arena, can go to the Pinatar Pirates CC Facebook page or email pinatarpiratescc@gmail.com.

the International Press that Lewis had been imbibing alcohol was unworthy of the media. The actual race turned out to be a bit of a non-event, Rosberg started from Pole, and finished first, thereby securing sufficient points to ensure his second place in the World Championship, which is what Mercedes wanted, Lewis started second, and finished second, Sebastian Vettel started third and finished accordingly. A little further back 18 year old Max Verstappen got into a wheel to wheel dice with Sergio Perez’s Force India, and demonstrated the massive talent which he is currently showing at Torro Rosso, and will prove him to be a future champion. At the end of the month the competition wraps up for the winter, and then we all settle down while the engineering gurus do whatever they do over the winter, testing is scheduled for February, and we all start again in March in good old Oz, but we will get Abu Dhabi out of the way first.

The competition was held between the 8th and 11th November with around 250 swimmers from 20 different countries from as far away as Mexico, South Africa, Australia and Brazil, with entries from most European countries. There were 5 new teams from Eastern Europe and 1 from Iceland this year. The quality of swimming was very high this year as there were a large number of new young swimmers competing. Adam was entered into 7 events, winning 1 gold ,2 silver and a bronze, with a personal best time in the 200 meters butterfly, and bettered his times in all his races by a few seconds. Lucy won a silver medal in the 25 meters breaststroke bettering her time by more than a second. After their next event in Elda on 28th November, they will start to prepare for the Disability Championships in Liverpool and the European Downs Syndrome Federation Championships early next year. Well done the Orihuela Costa Arsenal Supporters Club for their large donation and support, and also Dolans Bar Vía Park 3, who made it possible for Adam and Lucy to compete.
