A Volcanic ash cloud is causing chaos, with national and international flights grounded all over Europe and British airspace made a ‘no fly’ zone following an Icelandic eruption on Wednesday afternoon which spewed black
smoke and steam into the air from beneath the Eyjafjallajokull glacier. Volcanic ash constitutes a major hazard to aircraft and as volcanic ash drifted across Britain from Iceland, all airports in Scotland ceased operation and flights in and out of major airports in England gradually ground to a halt, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The
disruption to air travel is expected to continue for some time. And at Alicante’s El Altet Airport, a total of sixteen flights were cancelled yesterday afternoon (Thursday) with more cancellations anticipated over the next few days. RTN was at the airport to find out how the passengers with nowhere to go have been coping. Whilst it appears that airlines such as Easy Jet and Monarch have done their best to accommodate their passengers and have given them hotels, there were over 500 Ryanair passengers at the terminal who were simply given a letter and told to queue up to book another flight; which they were told could be as far away as Tuesday of next week.
