Plague warning by Jack Troughton HIGHLY DANGEROUS Processionary Pine Caterpillars are on the march after an apparently bumper year for the roving insect. The caterpillars get their name from the characteristic nose to tail lines they form as they leave trees in search of food before burying themselves and turning into moths. And their nests – which have the appearance of candy floss – are commonly spotted in pine trees across the Costa Blanca. The insects have long hairs along their bodies which carry a poison that can trigger an allergic reaction. Particularly at risk are young children and pets, particularly inquisitive dogs. And anyone infected is recommended to seek professional medical help or immediately take an animal to the vets.
