MINISTER FOR Europe David Lidington has pledged his support in seeking solutions to Spanish property abuses after meeting a deputation of British victims.

The talks were held at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London and it was an opportunity for the politician to learn first hand of the problems, frustrationsand anguishsuffered by some British purchasers.

Central to the on-off meeting with Mr Lidington was the controversial Spanish property road show – starting its second phase in the UK yesterday (Thursday) as RTN went to press – and the failure to honour legally required bank guarantees for off-plan property purchasers.

And meeting the Minister to demand action was Keith Rule, organiser of the Bank Guarantee in Spain Petition, Ruth Genda, responsible for the ‘Stop the Spanish Roadshow Petition’, together with Mike Kerr and Kafo Genda.

The on-line petitions were

signed by thousands of people and outlined the anger and frustration of the victims.

Mr Lidington emphasised the Government was concerned about the impact problems were having on British citizens and said Ministers and the Ambassador would continue to raise property issues with Spain’s government. He stressed the best advice he could give prospective purchasers was that they should do their research and seek appropriate legal advice.

PREVENT But the minister underlined that the Government could not prevent Spain from encouraging investment in its property market.

Mr Lidington said: “I advise anyone considering buying a property abroad to do your research, learn about what documentation you must have in hand, and make sure you seek independent legal advice from a lawyer who is experienced in property law.”

Undertakings given by the Minister included raising the issue of bank guarantees with the Spanish government at every opportunity and the possibility of organising a meeting between the Bank Guarantees Action Group and the Bank of Spain.

Killing stuns town

by Jack Troughton A PENSIONER allegedly killed his 78-year-old wife in a brutal assault following an argument at their Costa Blanca home on Saturday morning.

It was the third fatal incident of gender violence in Alicante this year after earlier killings in Mutxamel and Polop. The 80-year-old husband was remanded in custody by a Denia judge the same day. He was reported to have maintained his right to silence – although it was said he confessed to Guardia Civil officers he killed his wife following a heated argument.

When police arrived at the villa on Urbanisation Carrio, they discovered the man’s body next to his wife. He had suffered a number of injuries, allegedly in a bid to commit suicide.

Neighbours said they were alarmed by the level of violence as they were not aware of any problems and said the couple always lived quietly together.

However, RTN was told the wife had become increasingly reliant on her spouse after developing dementia and it was likely charges would be reduced to manslaughter. An insider said: “From what we have learned, it appears he just had enough and flipped.

Obviously the whole episode is out of character, there appears to have been no history of domestic violence or even arguments – it has stunned the community.”

Blaze at Child chokes to abandoned hotel death on doll’s head

by Louise Clarke EVERY PARENT’S worst nightmare came true for a couple in Orihuela last week when their six-year-old son died after choking on a doll’s head. If you are a parent of young children and have toys in your home that have loose parts, please read this article, take the necessary precautions and say to yourself: “There but for the grace of God, go I.” The youngster was playing with the doll at his home in the centre of Orihuela last Friday and according to his parents had a habit of chewing and sucking on things. Inadvertently, he put the dolls head in his mouth and within minutes he was choking and suffocating.

LIFELESS Panic stricken, his father tried remove the head from the boy’s mouth but his breathing soon became laboured. In a state of grief stricken despair, rather than take the boy to a nearby health clinic, the father thought it would be best to enlist the help of the boy’s mother and so took his son’s practically lifeless body to the nearby Mercadona, where the couple both worked. Sadly, the young boy died in the arms of his parents by the tills of the supermarket, where minutes earlier his mother had been working. Emergency services were on the scene very quickly but soon discovered that the boy had no pulse and CPR proved useless. The doctor found that there was nothing in the throat to obstruct the airway but was later told by the father that he had managed to remove the little doll’s head that he had swallowed, but too late.

The boy’s funeral took place on Tuesday and all the members of the Orihuela Government observed a minute’s silence at Midday in honour of the youngster. The Mayor, Monserrate Guillén, said that the family had been offered the full support of the municipal government for whatever they may need in their time of grief and said that he had offered this personally during a condolence visit to the boy’s parents and other family members.

WHAT TO DO Most parents know what to do to prevent their child from

choking, but many don’t know what to do once they are choking. Every year more than 3,000 people, including some children, choke to death. Children under the age of 14 often choke on both food items, like hot dogs, grapes, nuts and raisins, and non-food objects, such as toys, balloons and coins. Thousands more go to the hospital with choking-related incidents.

It takes just four minutes for a child to die from choking. If you are faced with a choking child ask them: “Are you choking?” If yes, ask: “Can you speak?” If no, tell the child you are going to help. Next, kneel or stoop to stand behind the child, wrapping your arms around the child. Make a fist with one hand; hold it with the other hand against the centre of the child’s abdomen, between the navel and ribs. Provide abdominal thrusts (Heimlich manoeuvre) until the object is expelled or the child becomes unresponsive. If the child becomes unresponsive, begin CPR. Each time you open the airway, look for a foreign object (remove it if seen). Continue rescue breaths and chest compressions and phone 112 as soon as possible.

Staff protested for weeks after owners failed to pay their wages

By Louise Clarke FIREFIGHTERS FROM Crevillent, Almoradi and Elche attended a blaze at the abandoned Villa de Catral Hotel and Spa on Tuesday evening.

It took seven hours for the five engines to control the flames at the hotel, which closed last year. A thick cloud of smoke was visible from the six storey building from the nearby AP7 and local police were alerted to

the blaze by drivers shortly after 6pm. The hotel, once considered one of the best in the area with 66 rooms, a gym, spa, meeting room and summer terrace, has been completely looted by vandals since its closure in May 2010 and it is suspected that the fire was started deliberately, although the Guardia Civil and Fire Investigation Officers are still determining the exact cause.

by Jack Troughton TOWN HALL workers threaten a campaign of demonstrations in a Marina Alta town as the axe falls on local authority jobs.

Unions maintain they are forced to take action against the unacceptable “high cost” of losing council jobs in debt-ridden Calpe.

And on Sunday more than 100 people took to the streets to protest against the redundancies being implemented by the governing Partido Popular and Independientes- Els Verds alliance.

The unions claim workers faced the sack because of overruns on construction projects, fraud and waste.

But with debts of around €80 million and a monthly wage bill of over €1.3 million the new government maintains it was forced to trim its 630 strong workforce.

Mayor Cesar Sanchez agreed with demonstrators the cuts were “very painful” but his team had “inherited a very unfair situation” – a legacy of bad management that was “simply unsustainable”.

VALENCIA’S VITAL tourist industry should compete for annual awards to constantly improve standards and reward new initiatives, it was claimed this week. The Valencia government was urged to consider an award scheme given the importance of tourism across the region to the community – those directly employed in the industry and others working in peripheral sectors. Benidorm’s councillor for tourism Juan Angel Ferrer believes such a scheme would recognise those who boosted the general economy through their endeavours. He said it would “reward” both individuals and institutions in a number of tourist sectors for their “work, commitment, dedication.”

This psychosis must end, otherwise trade will die. We have to make things to sell and for the customer, even moderately and wisely, to consume, because otherwise the wheels could stop turning.”

VOUCHERS To remedy this, traders have turned to a campaign they hope will attract new customers with the distribution of €1 million in gift certificates authorising discounts on pur-

chases at local shops. The ‘Gateway Surprise,’ an event to be held on Saturday 22nd October from 5.30pm on Avenida Padre Esplá, aims to encourage sales and gifts, with surprises thrown in including musical performances, theatre and magic demonstrations.

Customers discounts will be available in the days prior to the show purchased at participating retailers giving away vouchers to the value of up to 200€, redeemable with a purchase in the associated facilities over the next six months, excluding sale periods. Traders have been issued with 500 pads of vouchers of varying amounts, each totalling 2,000€.

Should all the vouchers be exchanged it would represent many millions in increased business for participating stores.

Motorcyclist in Valencia found dead five hours after crash reported

A MOTORCYCLIST was found dead near an overpass in Valencia five hours after an emergency call for help on Saturday. The body was spotted on the Giorgeta Peris y Valero at 8am, five hours after the accident. The victim, a 29year-old Venezuelan woman, crashed on a curve at around 3am. Police and fire services responding found only a motorcycle with no rider. All four lanes were inspected thoroughly and also the road passing beneath the bridge.

and scooters to be abandoned following an accident so the search was abandoned.

However, the body of the motorcyclist was partially concealed by the metal barriers at the scene, indiscernible in the poor lighting. At 8am and in full daylight a local resident spotted the body of the victim, wearing a crash helmet and with a serious stomach wound.

An autopsy will reveal the time of death and whether the cyclist was still alive when the search for the body was abandoned.

Fraud uncovered

POLICE HAVE arrested 25 people for unpaid fees and irregular applications of unemployment benefit in two operations in Madrid and Las Palmas, uncovering a fraud of more than €2,300,000 in erroneous social security payments. According to research by the Social Security National Police, at least 42 workers claimed unemployment insurance after accumulating working periods outside that allowed by the law when enjoying access to unemployment benefit. Also workers were completing eight hour shifts but declaring four, receiving their salaries in cash. Some were hired and fired indiscriminately and provided with a bogus payroll that did not match actual income. Both operations have been carried out by agents of the Investigation Section of Social Security, assigned to the Central Crime Unit: Economic and Fiscal (UDEF) Department of the National Police.

High speed Benidorm coming soon BENIDORM’S MUNICIPAL government has welcomed a protocol signed between the Generalitat Valenciana and the Ministry to finally introduce high speed rail to the tourist capital.

by Patricia Thompson The Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Tourism, Juan Ángel Ferrer,and the owner of Mobility, Maria Carmen Martinez, attended the signing of the protocol in Valencia and chatted with Development Minister Jose Blanco on the arrival of high speed coastal transport. The minister shared with elected officials the need to Benidorm as Spain’s main tourist city to be connected with other major European cities.

For his part, Juan Ángel Ferrer said that the signing of the protocol is “very important to bring tourists and visitors to Benidorm. For a city that lives from tourism, this is very positive.”

by Louise Clarke SPANISH STRIKER Fernando Torres revealed he would love to test his sea legs for real as he and his fellow World Cup winning teammates visited the Volvo Ocean Race in Alicante, prior to their Euro 2012 qualifying showdown with Scotland.

But the multi-million pound Chelsea forward admitted one leg of the world’s toughest crewed yacht race would be enough after seeing the cramped conditions down below on cutting edge Volvo Open 70 race boat ‘CAMPER’.

The first leg of the elite race takes the fleet from Alicante to Cape Town in a gruelling

6,500 mile journey through the Atlantic – the first of nine legs in a 39,000-nm race that will not finish until July 2012 in Galway, Ireland.

VILLAGE “To sail on these boats would be a great experience but I think when I got to Cape Town I would be on the first plane home,” said Torres, who played for Liverpool before his multi-million pound transfer to Chelsea earlier this year.

Miss USA named as Miss Intercontinental 2011 Jose Blanco defends himself DEVELOPMENT MINISTER Jose Blanco made a statement to the press on Wednesday regarding the “lies that are coming out” about his relationship with businessman Jorge Dorribo and his involvement in ‘Operation Champion’, in which he is accused by Dorribo of collecting a 400,000€ backhander in exchange for grants to the value of almost 500,000€ from regional funds to enable Dorribo’s pharmaceutical company, Nupel, to obtain licences from the Health Ministry. Blanco claims he is the victim of “scurrilous lies” generated by “ragamuffins” out to discredit him.

Fifty-nine candidates came from all corners of the World to parade down the catwalk in costumes, swimwear and evening wear, but only one could be the winner and that accolade went to the representative of the United States, who managed to win over the jury to be crowned the World’s most beautiful woman.

The Spanish representative, model Gloria Martinez, was crowned as first runner-up, and when it was announced she received huge applause and cheers from the audience.

Seismic developments near El Hierro

by Jan Gamm TWO SUB-MARINE volcanic eruptions have occurred off the south coast of El Hierro, the smallest and southernmost island in the Canary Islands.

Two separate fissures have been identified less than 3.7 kilometres and 2.8 kilometres from La Restinga, a town on the southeast of the island. Authorities detected the smell of sulphur in the area and dead fish have been spotted on the sea surface. The eruptions are part of an unprecedented earthquake swarm in El Hierro with the number of earthquakes recorded since 17th July now exceeding 10,300.

The Canary Islands Government raised the alert level for the Hierro volcano to ‘Yellow’ late last month. The alert remained in place on Thursday.

RED ALERT A Red Alert was issued on Tuesday evening for the town of La Restinga and local residents were evacuated. Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and cabinet colleagues later attended an emergency briefing on the situation. All three seismic stations on El Hierro have registered a volcanic tremor of low frequency in the south of the island at La Restinga, the southern-most village in the Canaries.

A reconnaissance flight made by scientists from IGN and CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) on Tuesday revealed dead fish floating on the surface five kilometres from the coast.

New Team Ministry at La Siesta Evangelical Church AFTER BEING without a permanent Minister for two years, a new team ministry has been appointed to La Siesta Evangelical Church consisting of Rev Steve Campbell, who has acted as temporary Minister on various occasions, and Keith Brown.

Keith, a member of the congregation, has been appointed to the Team by the Ministerial Commission of the Iglesia Evangélica Española in Madrid and, according to their normal procedure, is authorised to perform all sacraments including Holy Communion.

A Service of Commissioning and Blessing of the new Team will be held at La Siesta Church on Saturday October 22nd at 7pm, led by Pastor Davíd Manzanas Pelegrina, the President of the Presbytery of Levante of the Iglesia Evangélica Española to which denomination our church belongs.

Police uncover a marijuana plantation in a house in Torrellano

POLICE HAVE arrested a 40-year-old Frenchman on charges of crimes against public health after discovering he was running a large scale marijuana plantation in his home in Torrellano. More than 600 plants were being home-grown in a greenhouse with a professional level of irrigation, temperature control and ventilation. 2000 grams of marijuana buds were also seized along with precision scales and 18 high-powered lamps and transformers. The man was taken into custody last Friday pending a hearing at the police court in Elche.

New look for Moneycorp

FOREIGN EXCHANGE and money services specialist Moneycorp has chosen eye-catching red and white colours for its new corporate image.

And the “brilliant” new logo for the market leader will always be accompanied and underlined by the all-important message: “Trusted foreign exchange since 1979.”

With over £11 billion in currencies traded last year and regulated and authorised by the Financial Services Authority, Moneycorp is recommended by RTN for its secure and reliable service.

The change comes after Moneycorp ordered market researchers to investigate the strength of its former branding. Results showed that while it reflected the long standing nature of the corporation, it did not stand out enough.

STRONG Moneycorp’s Kevin Wright explained: “The brief was for designers to look at something very strong and current but not necessarily trendy – just something updated.

“One problem is the logo itself. Companies with a very strong logo, like ‘Nike’ for example, have to spend lots of money supporting it.

“Consequently what we have gone for is a really strong use of the name Moneycorp and a complete change in colours.”

The branding will be used right across the London-based group, from its corporate and private arms to the airport bureaux de change, as well as company literature and letterheads.

An end to the ‘Puente’

THE SPANISH business community via the CEOE (Spanish Confederation of Employers’ Organisations) has taken stock of the cost of the ‘Puente’ of ‘Acueducto’ – the ‘long weekend’ tradition of adding a day or two to a fiesta holiday to effectively bridge high days and holidays, giving workers extra time off. In hard times it is considered inappropriate to call a halt to production while workers celebrate fiestas. Executives across the Costa Blanca are calling for midweek fiestas to be moved to the weekend. Presently there are a total of 14 fiestas celebrated each year that represent significant losses in terms of productivity. The CEOE made assurances that Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Spanish National Day would remain secure. The Junta de Andalusia has already rejected the plan, saying it would affect tourism adversely.

Banks must foot the cost says Salgado

Elena Salgado Spain’s Finance Minister

SPANISH FINANCE Minister Elena Salgado said on Thursday that “Spanish banks must foot the cost of recapitalising the financial sector to avoid deepening the public deficit.” The minister’s message was clear: banks must now stand on their own feet (six days after the state sealed a €7.55 billion overhaul of the financial sector). “The government intends that future losses that may occur in the recapitalisation of the financial sector should not be transferred to the taxpayer, nor increase the public deficit,” Salgado said, speaking at a press conference. Salgado’s announcement came on the same day that European Commission head Jose Manuel Barroso called for member states to take “coordinated action” to recapitalise banks. The Spanish minister made clear that her government has already acted to help banks and its priority now is the deficit.

The Mayor of San Javier, Juan Martínez Pastor, attended the celebration of the Guardia Civil’s Patron Saint along with the Councillor for Police and Security, José Manuel Alarte and other key military and civilian officials. The group of

assembled police officers and Town Hall representatives took part in a procession after a mass in honour of the patron saint, which was held in the Francisco Javier church in the centre of the town.

The image of the Virgin left with the troops of the Guardia Civil based at the barracks in San Javier and during the journey, officers sang the anthem of the Guardia Civil. The procession ended in Almansa Park where the Town Hall laid on Spanish wine for the of-

ficers in appreciation for their work in the municipality.

Lieutenant Antonio Jose Jimenez, who joined as Post Commander in the San Javier Guardia Civil on 1st September, officially opened the celebrations and stated that: “...the gates of the barracks and my office are open to all.”

The new Commander was also asked to make the traditional toast to the Virgin of Pilar, the King, the Guardia Civil and Spain.

WHEN I began in practice over 24 years ago in Belfast I never dreamed that I would also have clinics here in sunny Spain as well.

People often ask me why my style of Hypnotherapy is different from the conventional practice. It all stems back to my early years as a Hypnotherapist in Belfast in the early 80s. This was when Hypnotherapy was a new ‘Alternative Treatment’ and a lot of people viewed it with scepticism.

Having trained with an excellent organisation called the “Institute of Analytical Hypnotherapists”, now called the ‘International Association of ‘Pure’ Hypnoanalysts’ I opened a small office in Belfast. One of the Sunday newspapers then did a feature on me and word started to get around that there was this guy who could help people with their problems. It just started to grow from there.

I saw the employed, unemployed, multi-millionaires, TV and Radio personalities, people from every walk of life. In a short space of time I had seven clinics throughout Northern Ireland and I was working seven days a week flat out. People were coming to see me for various reasons, but in Northern Ireland it was completely different from mainland UK because of the many victims of the troubles.

FAST TRACK

It was because of this that I came away from my conventional training, whereby people would be regressed into their childhood to try to recall the originating cause of their panic attacks, or other problems.

It would normally take up to 15 sessions to achieve that, when clearly it wasn´t in childhood at all; it was happening to them now.

So I came away from conventional Hypnotherapy and developed my own techniques, also introducing specialised equipment from America to speed the whole process up, plus cutting everything down to the fastest way possible without losing any effectiveness, to get these poor people sorted out. Having developed these techniques I then called it Fast Track Hypnosis and I have been using this method ever since.

People would say to me “does it work?” It´s certainly not miracle work, it´s not a ‘cure’ for all, and there are plenty of other good therapies out there that I would recommend to a client if I felt that they would benefit more from that way instead.

EARLY YEARS

MEDIA INTEREST

In those years counselling was very limited so I had to help thousands of people caught up in the conflict.

There was the person who was one of the rescue service personnel who had to go to the ‘Dropin Well’ in Ballykelly after it was blown up in 1982 with the tragic loss of many people (including 17 soldiers). Most of the victims were crushed under heavy masonry. He was one of the first in and after many years he still couldn´t get one particular image out of his mind, that of a victim still sitting at a table, but their head pushed between the shoulder blades. There was also the Omagh bomb casualty who wanted to overcome panic attacks, so that they could walk up the aisle to get married. I could tell you countless more stories like these, many of which I am

When I started doing these new techniques, the media (TV, newspapers and radio) wanted to know if they really did work and so they started putting me to the test. I proved my ‘Fast Track Stop Smoking in 30 minutes’ twice on TV. On another programme I had to help a psychologist get over her agoraphobia, which I did in four sessions. Other times, different programmes featured me helping a company director overcome their fear of flying phobia and a young boy of 10 who was having panic attacks. Only four sessions was required for each.

SATISFACTION It has not been all doom and gloom, hearing all these terrible stories. There is a great deal of satis-

faction in my job and at the time of writing this, I have just finished sessions with a very well-known actress who had suddenly developed stage fright.

Then there was a time I had to help a famous writer get over her fear of flying so that she could go to Hollywood to sign a movie deal. She sent me an autographed copy of her latest book which I have carefully put away. There was the lady who had bought a villa on the Costas and she had a phobia of going up and down her marble staircase and the man who had the phobia of putting in his false teeth. There are thousands more like this - the things I am asked to treat are so varied.

PERSONAL USE People have also asked me if I ever use hypnosis for myself. Of course I have, throughout much of my career! I have seen Hypnotherapists advertising Hypnosis as a completely new way of helping women when giving birth to their babies. All my three children were born under hypnosis and my eldest is now 18 years old. I used it for each of them: no pain relief was needed. All my equipment was taken to the hospital and used there, along with a crowd of doctors and nurses watching everything I did. It was also used for their exams and accelerated learning.

Whenever my wife had a toothache she would come to me for pain relief. (Unfortunately it always seemed to be in the middle of the night). Our dentist now uses Hypnosis in his practice, and advertises this fact. My kids use it when getting their injections. Our family doctor thought it was hilarious that the kids would be standing laughing with him as he gave them the jab. I had to show numerous medical students this very quick technique.

My children were also into horse riding before we moved to Spain and with the use of Hypnosis for motivation and confidence; each one of them attained the status of Champion Riders of the Year! And me, I use Autohypnosis to simply chill out between sessions!

YOUNG ROBERT Coombs is a familiar sight around Javea Port and is able to indulge in his favourite pastime of ‘people watching’ with the help of carer Shaun Cryer.

by Jack Troughton Robert suffers Cerebral Palsy and the 24year-old relies on Shaun to make sure his wheelchair is parked in an ideal spot to watch the hustle and bustle of daily life.

And Shaun, who works in the RTN Network sales department, looks after Robert on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday – with his friend Jose taking charge if he is delayed by work commitments.

“He loves going into bars because he absolutely loves people watching and interacting with people,” said Shaun. “Everyone in Javea knows Robert.”

During the good weather they take advantage of bar and restaurant terraces and over the months Robert has been befriended by the staff – who keep him supplied with drinks and cakes.

CAKE “He really does like soft cakes and loves soft food like spaghetti and Chinese,” said Shaun. “The food has to be soft because he has difficulty swallowing.

“His favourite tipple is pineapple juice but too much is not good. The bars never charge for his drinks or the treats they give him and everyone takes the time to say ‘hello’.”

Shaun said if the weather was bad and during the dark winter months they still visit bars and they are regulars at expat haunts Bomber’s Bar and Cheers Bar. “If he is at home his favourite thing to do is watch music videos, especially girl bands,”

the carer revealed. “He actually prefers blondes to brunettes.”

Shaun used to work as a carer in the UK. “I just fell into it and found I loved it - I have a niece with a disability – and also worked with the elderly in nursing homes.

CHANGE “I enjoy my time with Robert and I think he enjoys his time with me and Jose. I have helped look after him for about 15 months and his parents, Roger and Pauline, say how much he has changed and he is always happy when he knows we are taking him out.

“Robert is absolutely no trouble really,” he said. “If he is in a mood then everyone will know and he will scream the place down – but that has only happened twice in 15 months.

“He loves any type of music. Cheers Bar is the favourite because it is always playing music and he likes Maritimo on the front because there are always lots of people going by.”

Shaun said he was in desperate need of a ramp to help get Robert indoors during the bad weather and the electric wheelchair urgently needed a new seat cover – which has to be especially tailored to fit Robert. “I hope someone can help us out.” Bar Smith has already donated 200€.

And Bombers Bar, currently being expanded, is to reopen with a charity night to benefit Robert and ADIMA, the Pedregeur occupational therapy centre, where he often attends.

Don Joaquin Sendra

A CHARITY concert is being held at the Fisherman’s Church in Javea Port on Saturday 22nd October in memory of its parish priest Don Joaquin Sendra.

The 9pm concert by Cantores Sanctis Diebus, from Salisbury, England, will also raise money for the church charity Caritas, which supports needy families hit by the recession.

Don Joaquin, who died earlier this year aged 69 after a long illness, was ordained in 1967 and came to the parish of the Virgen de Loreto in 1980.

The performance will be in two parts. The first features Justorum Animae by William Byrd, Requiem A6, written by Tomas L de Victoria in 1603, and the ‘plainsong’ In Paradisum. The second half will be Thomas Tallis’ If Ye Love Me; Boyd’s Sing Joyfully and de Victoria’s Ecce Sacerdos Magnus Ave Maria.

Wrong decision in my opinion THE REPORTED likely closure of San Javier Airport is to be regretted, and in my opinion would be a wrong decision. How can this make sense after all the money that has been invested in San Javier Airport, and work still going on? People don’t want ‘improved facilities’, as promised by Corvera they want cheap flights and an airport conveniently near to where they are staying – i.e. along the Costa Calida coast.

I know San Javier is currently also referred to as Murcia Airport, but as a fairly frequent user of San Javier flights (although I have met many people travelling to various towns and villages from Alicante to Mazarron) I have yet to encounter anyone travelling on to Murcia.

If Aena are leaving to run Corvera, surely another airport operator should be given the opportunity to run San Javier airport so that the likes of Ryanair can continue their cheaper walk on/off flights no longer possible from Alicante or from the proposed Corvera.

The greatness of a nation MAHATMA GANDHI is reputed to have once said: ¨The greatness of a Nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated…” which makes me wonder how miniscule he would have considered Spain to be had he visited. Once again this year we have been assailed by scenes of every imaginable type of animal cruelty being inflicted throughout the towns and villages in the country in the name of entertainment or historical culture.

Goats are thrown out of tower buildings, Bulls are run into the sea, run ragged around fields before being speared by baying mobs on horseback, run around rings with their horns alight, or just run around rings before some sad ‘wannabe famous’ moron dressed in a fancy suit puts the animal out of its misery and hacks its ears off: all this for the entertainment of young and old alike…and justified in the name of culture.

I despair when I see youngsters following their parents in these activities and it is obvious that there is a complete lack of any meaningful education being passed down through the generations. Sadly, these public spectacles are far outnumbered by incidents

of more private perverse examples of animal cruelty and one has only to travel around the countryside to witness dogs hanging from trees, horses and donkeys neglected to the point of starvation and one can only presume these acts are for the owners’ personal perverse gratification.

The Spanish don’t even appear to understand the concept behind animal sanctuaries for heaven’s sake, and we now read about the atrocious conditions imposed on animals supposedly being given sanctuary from such widespread cruelty.

Is it any wonder this country is in such dire straits when respect for anything apart from money is non-existent!?

Fortunately I have elderly Spanish friends living alone who are only just now beginning to appreciate the love, loyalty, companionship and affection that can be returned by animals if they are only shown respect but I fear it will be a long time yet before Spain can truly be deemed to have any form of ‘Greatness’.

Disgraced by loutish behaviour ONCE AGAIN our sportsmen have disgraced our homeland with their loutish behaviour. The rugby team had Tuilagi arrested; then the newlywed Mike Tindall had a highly publicised drunken night out. The royal family must be well pleased - plus the three players who insulted the lady hotel worker…

Naturally Wayne (Loony) Rooney had to contribute to our shame. Rugby was once played by gentlemen. As a gentleman of good social standing I have to say I am appalled: I went to Newcastle a few years ago and met some miners in a pub called the Jolly Fellows - they had little money, spoke in a strange way and did a very dangerous job. But these men respected the nation and showed me only kindness; something our overpaid sportsmen should be doing.

You do not have to be posh or rolling in money to be a ‘gent’.

HI, HAVING just been definitively ‘cut off’ by Sky, I was surprised to read that landlady Karen Murphy won her case in the European Court of justice. Sky cut me off five weeks ago, so I phoned with a prefix to hide my Spanish phone number. A very nice young Scottish man arranged for my Sky TV to be restored within a couple of hours. He told me I should write and change the account into my name only, as I have been recently widowed. So I wrote, and Sky cut off my TV when the letter arrived. When I phoned I was told that Sky could no longer supply me, and I would be refunded the money paid for October. When I asked to start a new contract with a new address, they put me through...but I couldn’t supply a new UK address, as I don’t have one!

They sent me a letter saying they could no longer flight delay we did not leave the ship until almost 5pm. For all that day we were not only allowed to keep and use our cabins, but the 20 supply me as I am legally not allowed to watch Sky outside of UK...even though I had a UK address when or so passengers still left on board were provided with the normal my late husband signed the contract in March 2001. On restaurant and bar service right up until disembarkation!

As mentioned in the article, the future of Happy Cruises is currently phoning local companies I was quoted around 199€ for a new card and £164 per year for a UK address: I just uncertain. Our group of six hopes it will be able to continue; this said I would up my megabites with Telefonica using the is the second cruise we have had with them (Med Cruise last £24.50 a month I will save, and stream UK TV through September), and we would definitely use them - through David’s my computer.

Superb service given to us I READ the article by Louise Clarke in last week’s RTN with particular interest, as my wife and I and four friends were six of the eight people given superb service by David’s Coachtrips when our return flight from Venice was put back 5 hours, leaving Venice at 7:20pm instead of 2:30pm. Because the rest of David’s customers had been able to leave Venice on time, their coach from Madrid to this area could not wait for the remaining eight. As mentioned in the article, David drove a minibus to Madrid, put the eight of us in a nearby hotel Monday night for bed & breakfast at Coachtrips’ expense, delivering us home Tuesday. The cruise itself was not without problems; a technical fault meant the ship was diverted to Crete for almost a day which meant missing the scheduled stop in Dubrovnik and arriving later than scheduled in Venice, our final port of call. Electricity prices continue to soar A reported 9.9% price increase is planned for January

WHAT ARE our options?

THERE ARE two price increases each year in January and July: In 2010 an additional 4.8% price hike arrived in October. This year, we experienced a 9.9% increase in January – more than double the normal January increase and a further 1.5% increase in July.

Spanish national newspapers and TV news programmes reported a 22.5% increase planned for January but it was vetoed and replaced with the 9.9% increase. This ‘reduced’ increase prompted many Spanish communities to protest in the streets.

The government has promised no further price increases for the final quarter of 2011.

Could this have something to do with gaining votes? Could it mean we can expect another price hike in January? We all know the answer to these questions...

ENOUGH Two choices: either do nothing and hope things slow down naturally or - take positive steps - join the free market: change providers and take control of your electricity bills.

Spain’s financial outlook awaiting further blows

IN REPORTS issued by Dow Jones late Tuesday two credit rating agencies said they are keeping a negative outlook on Spanish banks with S&P (Standard and Poor’s) said it could downgrade some banks further if the Spanish economy deteriorates more than expected or if the adverse impact on banks’ financial profile is greater than expected. Standard & Poor’s cut its ratings for 10 Spanish banks, including Santander and BBVA, along with smaller banks such as Bankinter SA (BKT.MC) and Banco Sabadell. S&P indicated that a further increase in nonperforming loans may be seen as a consequence of tough economic conditions, as well as loan write-offs at a higher level. It also anticipates that the banks may accumulate more real-estate assets from developers unable to service their debts, seen as ‘problematic assets’.

by Jan Gamm WHILE ‘ELF & Safety’ are busy prohibiting hanging flower baskets and forbidding children to climb onto Santa’s sleigh, high in the El Chorro Gorge, about 30 miles from Malaga, extreme sports enthusiasts, or to put it another way – nutcases – are wobbling along El Caminito Del Rey (the King’s trail) a crumbling pathway more than 100 meters up.

In some places the path is around 18 inches wide, in others it disappears completely and walkers must balance on a three inch metal beam to reach relative safety, always over a sickening drop to the canyon below, with no hand rails or safety equipment to speak of other than a line pegged into the wall, and below foot the surface of the path is deeply cracked; in a number of places there are wide craters. And yes, walkers have fallen to their deaths from the pathway.

Spanish tour companies are now offering tours along the path as adrenaline junkies rush to experience the walk before the path is made safe in a year’s time – an unwelcome project for danger seekers who like the path just the way it is – free and dangerous!

The trail, originally built in 1905 to provide access for workers between two hydroelectric power plants, is to be re-constructed with protective barriers, hand rails, effective lighting and a visitors’ centre. The project will take three years.

Also yet to be confirmed is the date of the commemoration of the work of Federico Garcia Lorca on the 75th anniversary of his death.

A recital (Liszt-conmemoration in 2011) by pianist Istvan Isaac Szekely is to be held on 25th November in the Saló Blau of the Casa de Cultura Calpe.

A Tango recital with the Trío Entreverados will take place 9th December, and a recital by the internationally acclaimed guitarist Ignacio Rodes will be in March 2012, along with a number of other projects still in the pipeline. Aircraft badges were sold and a competition to name the ‘Battle of Britain Bear’ earned more than 100€ for the Wings Appeal, to provide emergency welfare assistance for serving and ex-service RAF personnel.

In addition the funds help the ‘Miles More Minutes’ campaign, providing extra phone minutes for personnel on active duty to phone home, and the Storybook Wings campaign that enables serving personnel to record bedtime stories for their children to listen to in their absence. FOREIGN RESIDENTS of a Costa Blanca village can now enjoy a translation service to improve communication with local authority departments. Translation into English is available at Benitachell Town Hall on Mondays and Wednesdays between 9.30am and 1.30pm – a similar service is available to French and German speakers on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A town hall spokesman said the service was being introduced to look after the “needs” of everyone in the community “and will make more effective communication between residents and all the departments of the council.” However, expats wanting to learn Spanish or Valenciano can attend classes at Benitachell’s Adult Education Centre. Registration is currently taking place in the Centro de Formacion Personas Adultas in Calle la Mar, 28.

The Benitachell Charity Shop – which earlier this year adopted the home to sponsor – donated the money to buy schoolbooks and materials.

And grateful President of the Friends of the Children of EMAUS, Carole Saunders said it was a “fantastic” gift to the charity which worked tirelessly to improve the lot of children living in EMAUS homes along the Costa Blanca.

Dancing up a storm

by Jack Troughton ENEGETIC ZUMBA dancers raised 505€ and a “mountain” of blankets and towels for the dogs cared for by Javea animal charity APASA. A week after Costa Blanca thunderstorms rained off a dance class at beach bar Moskito, the dancers made sure the show went on and took over Javea nightclub El Moli Blanca.

Zumba is the increasingly popular and infectious Latin American inspired hi-energy crossover of dance and keep fit and has found a small army of supporters in the expat community.

Instructor Kimberley Harrison said: “People

turned out in force, with over 50 dancers – who dragged along their poor Zumba’d out families – to dance, drink and be merry again.

“Various people who were in the UK donated money before they left, and great fun was had by all.”

And Kimberley paid tribute to El Moli Blanca.

“They opened early for us – they changed cleaning rotas and brought in DJs, security and bar staff four hours early – and did all that for free after we were rained off the previous week at Moskito.”

Tartan Army supports EMAUS THE TARTAN Army Children’s Charity (TACC) has chosen a group of children’s homes in Spain as their chosen benefactor for the month of October.

The move coincided with Scotland’s Euro2012 qualifier against Spain which took place in Alicante earlier this week.

There are 12 homes in the Alicante area run by the EMAUS charity, including one for babies. It was announced this week that the TACC will be donating £15,000 to build a sports area/football pitch at one home and a playground at another and also taking over a truck load of clothes and toys to the baby home and organising a party for the children at one of the homes.

The Caledonian Brewery Pipe Band and fellow supporters will attend and also organise tickets for 12 children to attend the Scotland vs Spain match.

Sadly, Scotland lost the match 3-1 against the World Cup holders and has therefore failed to qualify for the European Championships, which take place in Poland and the Ukraine next summer.

by Jack Troughton BIG-HEARTED MEMBERS of newly formed animal charity AKIRA are helping pay the fees for caring for eight dogs rescued from a ‘concentration camp’ just outside Benissa.

AKIRA has been negotiating with Benissa and Teulada town halls and been pledged suitable land to open a shelter.

However, with more than 10,000€ the charity – which has an international membership of animal lovers – decided it would help dogs taken from the compound of a country home in Belimallunt.

At a fund-raising Ladies Day at Finca Abril, Benissa, RTN was told AKIRA has already spent 1,200€ at the ALIAGA Kennels on the upkeep of the dogs and the bills kept mounting even after a generous discount.

“We want to raise money to build a shelter but by giving it away we are helping dogs,” said AKIRA’s Pauline Curtis.

“We are hoping to appeal to people’s better nature to help us out with this one – perhaps they can adopt one of these dogs or possibly act as foster home.”

She said 22 of the dogs rescued from Belimallunt had already been found new homes in Berlin.

DO YOU remember back in your schooldays being told parables, fables and stories that were designed in some way to enlighten you? Well, maybe if they didn’t enlighten you then at least they provided illustration on that most essential quality of ‘being prepared’.

The motto in the Cubs, I seem to recall, was ‘Be Prepared’. Yup, we were the generation that would be able to cope. Common sense also, was promoted and drilled into us so that hopefully, we would be able in later life to deal with any given situation.

I guess like me a lot of RTN readers watch Casualty on the Beeb and marvel at how the protagonists deal with the often grim situations thrown at them. And every time, in real life, when I see an ambulance race by me in the street I’m filled with awe at the coping By abilities of those crews. Now, in the past I’ve done a bit of First Aid myself. We learnt it in the ATC and at East Watts Sussex County Council I was trained in resuscitation techniques and ‘the kiss of life’ etc. The thing you’re never prepared for though is how you will cope in a sudden situation and as I drove to work last Wednesday it was the very subject being discussed on Radio 4.

The man being interviewed was stressing how important it was for more people to come forward and learn First Aid. He believed that hundreds of lives could be saved every year if more people were able to rightly assess a person in distress; and also how to make an initial diagnosis followed by the correct care strategy. Apparently, more people are harmed by being moved after an accident or incident by people who do not know what they’re doing.

Most probably, by that evening, I would have normally completely forgotten it but little did I know that in a few hours I would be learning a salutary lesson.

Zip forward to midday and I’m waiting at a bus stop with a crowd of pensioners for the Asda bus. It’s hot, sunny and about 28c. A woman in her thirties is sitting on an adjacent wall and suddenly drops down onto the pavement. It was weird because it happened in slow motion and for what seemed ages nobody did anything. She just slowly pitched forward and landed in almost an ideal recovery pose. “Shit,” I thought, “I must do something...” But do what? It was like that Spike Milligan sketch where everyone stands around chanting, “What’ll we do now, what’ll we do now?” I flipped my phone and dialled; I needed expert advice. One of the pensioners started to pull at the woman and the Radio 4 programme came screaming back. “No, we mustn’t do that,” I asserted, “we have to leave her where she is.” I knelt down beside the woman. The phone rang for an age...

“Which service do you require?” said a voice. “Oh, er, poli... er, ambulance,” I stammered. The phone line was transferred and rang again. Finally, a calm reassuring

voice came on the line. The voice took me through a series of procedures. “Have you checked for breathing?”

Yes. “Is she blue?” No. “Have you placed her in the recovery position?” Er, yeah – although it wasn’t down to me she just landed that way. “Is she responding to you? Have you asked for her name?” No. The voice took control and all I did was kneel beside her with what I thought might be a reassuring arm on her shoulder and carried out the instructions. “An ambulance has been dispatched and will be with you in five minutes.” Phew... but do you know how long five minutes seems? Five hours... “Keep talking to her, is she conscious yet?” No, not yet. One of the pensioners stood over us casting a shadow over the fallen woman’s head. I was glad someone was thinking clearly.

Finally the crew arrived and in no time my patient was in the back of the ambulance and thankfully coming round. “You did well mate,” one of the men said, “…just keeping talking to her was good and you put her in the correct recovery position.” I shrugged, “Er she just kinda landed like that.” He grinned and patted my shoulder, “Well done, anyway...”

That’s it for this week folks; I’ll let you guess the moral of this story.

Team White changing lives

SEVEN YOUNG men once at risk of exclusion are improving their attitudes to school and also their outlook on life thanks to sport, making up the triathlon team ‘Team White’, partaking in the event that combines running, cycling and swimming.

The team, based in Alicante, is to compete for the first time this month at an event on Sunday 23rd October in Benidorm.

The team members, aged between 13 and 17, formed eight months ago as part of an educational project by Educanova.

Spokesman Fermin Egido said: “We wanted kids who have a story to tell to set a new course under expert motivation.” The boys train six days a week at a gym in Alicante under the command of international triathlete Isaac Lopez.

The 27th November meeting will include the annual Christmas dinner at the New Asturias Restaurant: €10 members and €12 non-members covers a full dinner with a full Flamenco show featuring guest artists from The Raquel Peña Flamenco Professional Dance Company and the Flamenco For All amateur performers will also perform alongside Raquel Peña. And a special raffle offers big prizes.

Raquel says she has tried to retire but in celebration of Unesco naming 2012 the ‘Year of the Active Senior Citizen’ and the many requests for her to continue performing, is preparing a new programme in which she will take an active part.

Quantitative Easing - good or bad (or both) for your UK Pension Fund? by

Stephen Ward & Robert Burns LATE LAST week, the Bank of England (BoE) surprised the financial markets by announcing that it was embarking on a second round of quantitative easing (QE).

QE is achieved by the BoE (which is owned by the Government) buying Government securities (Gilts or debt issued by the UK Government). The sellers of these gilts will mainly be UK insurance companies and pension funds which hold them as investments.

The money used to buy these securities is created electronically, literally at the press of a button. The idea is that the money created will be deposited by the recipients in their respective bank accounts in return for the gilts they sell to the BoE. This increases bank reserves and

the ability of banks to lend to UK businesses. The money will eventually be ‘spent’ by the recipients (on shares for example).

So - the ability of banks to lend is increased, the supply of gilts falls (as they will become ‘owned’ by the BoE) and the price of shares will increase. Well that’s the theory. The problem is that no one knows whether QE really works this way or indeed whether it works at all in terms of stimulating the economy beyond short term effects.

By raising the total amount of QE to a total of £275bn, the BoE will have purchased gilts to the equivalent of 19% of UK GDP, 32% of the total value of UK gilts issued, and 45% of the particular type of gilts the BoE will actually buy (maturities of 3 to 25 years). Such a vast sum of ‘asset purchases’ leaves less to buy in the open market, effectively pushing up the prices of gilts by draining their supply.

This is as far as your pension fund is concerned is a bit of a curate’s egg.

Good because it may increase the price of shares to some degree (or cause them to fall less than they might otherwise do so), and so pension funds invested in shares will tend to rise in value, or fall less.

Good and bad, for those with deferred (or frozen) pensions

in final salary schemes, as pension fund liabilities rise (bad if the scheme is already in deficit) and transfer values will rise as well - good if the scheme is not in deficit and can afford to pay increased transfer values.

Good if your deferred pension is a public sector pension (like a civil service or teacher’s pension for example) as the increased scheme liability (and increased transfer values) are underwritten by the state.

Bad if you have a pension fund from which you are drawing income, as the amount you are able to withdraw will reduce and bad because of the increase in inflation that QE will cause.

One thing is for sure. It is more important than ever to have an expert eye cast over your UK pension fund as QE distorts the position.

The ability to transfer a UK pension fund to a QROPS for example enables an investment strategy to be put in place that takes account of the QE effect.

Business start-ups and transfers in testing times: Part 1

DESPITE THE gloomy economic news which greets Solicitor, Link Point Legal us every day, in our office we are finding that there and Business Services are plenty of people willing to invest in businesses on the Costa Blanca, whether brand new start-up’s or the purchase of existing businesses.

In this first of three articles I shall look at the points which you need to consider when choosing premises in which to start your business, in the second issues which concern you if you are going to rent your premises, and in the third I shall look at the issues which you need to consider when either selling or buying an existing business.

Whether you are buying or renting business premises, the old saying that the three most important items to consider are ‘location, location, location’, is even more true that when looking for residential property.

If you are going to be dependent on passing trade, are there sufficient potential customers passing the door? If you are going to be opening a business that is going to be a destination in its own right what is there to attract customers not only to your new business but to the area in general?

How will your customers be arriving at your business; is there somewhere for them to park, and if they then have to walk to get to you is the approach pleasant and if they will be coming and going at night is the area safe?

After you have found your premises, you will then need to discover whether your business will be granted a licence by the town hall to trade in that particular place.

All businesses require a licence, commonly known, as a ‘licencia de apertura’, but in the case of businesses that may have an impact on the environment whether through noise or the use of large amounts of water or energy the licence is known as a ‘licencia ambiental’.

You will need to employ an architect, or building engineer registered with your local provincial college of architects to prepare detailed plans and description known as a ‘proyecto’. The proyecto must bear the official stamp or ‘visa’ of the college of architects before it can be submitted to the town hall. The cost of preparing your proyecto can range from a few hundred to several thousand euros depending on the size and type of business, and the complexity of the plans required.

All districts are subject to planning rules, and some areas are zoned for commercial activities while others are not.

Some local authorities will be prepared to have a discussion with you or your architect in principal whether your proposed business would be allowed to trade in your desired location before you incur the costs of preparing a detailed proyecto. Other local authorities will insist on you submitting a detailed proyecto before giving you any advice.

If you are going to require larger than usual supplies of water or energy ask your architect to check with the water and power companies that they can fulfill your needs, and that the property or building from which you intend to trade has sufficient capacity without

needing to be rewired or re-plumbed.

Don’t forget that if you are going to trade from premises on an urbanizacion or which form part of a larger building that you may also require consent from the Community of Owners.

If you are proposing to set up your business in a rural area you may also require a ‘Documento de Interes Comunitario’, roughly equivalent to an environmental impact statement which must be prepared by a registered architect, to be submitted to and approved by the provincial government.

If you are buying your premises and carrying out construction work this may have to be declared in a formal deed to be signed at the Notary, or you may find that work that has been carried out in the past has never been declared and this will have to be done after the event.

If you going to rent your premises, in addition to all of these points you will need to obtain the consent of your Landlord to the work that need to carry out.

Alicante bottled wine exports sets record

WINES UNDER the Denomination of Origin Alicante sold 11.6 million bottles exported from Spain before the fall of the domestic market. At the close of the 2010-2011 season, bottled wines sold under Alicante Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) increased significantly according to sources from the Control Board on Monday. A total of 11,600,000 units represented an increase of 14.20% over the previous season; a landmark ‘record’ because the maximum registered in the PDO Alicante corresponded to the 2007-2008 campaign, with around 10,400,000 bottles certified. The reasons for the increase are said to lie in the ‘excellent performance’ of last year’s crop.

‘I have dismissed my builder and he is threatening to sue’

Dear reader - firstly it is very difficult to give you legal advice without having full knowledge of your situation. However, if we take it that you have paid for the job done correctly so far, but you do not want him to continue with any more work, then a good place to start will be by studying the contract closely. And if appropriate you should formally notify him that you do not wish him to continue with the works; which will be best done through your lawyer to avoid any confusion.

It is also advisable to prepare in advance for a potential lawsuit from the builder by collecting now all the evidence that shows why you should not pay the full agreed price since the builder has not fulfilled all the contractual obligations exactly or correctly. The breach of his obligations is of great importance because it ought to be recorded that your expectations as the client have been not been satisfied, and neither has he met the contract entirely; this is called ‘exceptio non rite adimpleti contractus’.

Therefore if you are able to prove non-compliance from

the builder, the judge will not find grounds in the builder’s argument, as the builder cannot ask to be paid for the entire contract, as if it had been seamlessly and entirely accomplished; as doing this would be an unacceptable imbalance in the obligations and benefits of the parties.

Hence, having a construction contract you must prove that the works done are faulty or incomplete and therefore should not result in the payment of the rest of the money agreed upon; serving as exemption for the required payment by showing the deficiencies in the execution of the works. But it is very important for you to understand that you will have the burden of proving the lack of compliance.

This leads to the point that it will be very advisable to certify, by means of an architect’s report, the construction defects and items of work not completed; and possibly also stating the costs for having the items fixed or repaired.

Indeed, it is very important to have evidence of the defective construction works status by the above mentioned manner or other similar, before making any repairs; and also be able to prove that the completion of the works have been done by you.

It is also highly advisable to seek and keep all invoices especially those for construction material, equipment and other builders’ services. These invoices will serve as proof of the additional expenses you have had to pay (or will have to

pay) to fix the faulty construction works or to complete them.

In relation to this type of payment exemptions for defective construction works we have recently obtained a positive ruling from the 5th Section of the Alicante County Court (Audiencia Provincial de Alicante Sección 5ª) dated 20-092011 in which the Court revokes the previous Ruling from the First Instance Court and totally dismissed the Lawsuit filed by a builder against our client stating that: ‘The refusal to pay the remainder of the money by my client was justified by the existence of defects in the performed works and the lack and poor quality shown in the completion’.

In your particular case and as noted above, we advise you to seek legal advice from a legal expert in this field regarding the steps to follow and the best way to demonstrate and record the builder’s failures.

Worst country for unemployment Spain is now the country with the worst unemployment numbers in the 34 countries which make up the OECD, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. The country now has 21.2% unemployed, way ahead of other countries where the average unemployment rate in August remained stable at 8.2%.

Ex CAM Director leaves a club after being heckled

THE FORMER Director General of the Caja Mediterráneo, Roberto Lopez, was forced to leave the Club Montemar sports club last weekend after being heckled by a crowd alleged to be retired or redundant CAM workers.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning as Lopez attended the club with a friend to receive tennis lessons. A group of people booed and hissed at him and eventually the abuse escalated to hurling insults.

Lopez finally abandoned his plans for tennis lessons and left the establishment. He left the CAM with a compensation netting €3.8 million and a gold-edged pension plan.

Spain back in recession The French Statistics Institute has calculated that Spain and Italy are both already back in recession, with growth in Italy down 0.1% of GDP for the third quarter and Spain down 0.2% over the last two quarters.

In their latest report they say both countries are therefore in recession for the second half of this year, and that the recovery of the Eurozone as a whole will falter.

The moral of the story is: don’t underestimate the information-sharing capability of the authorities here in Spain, especially when they’re short of money. However, do underestimate the level of effort they will make in informing you of your debts. Information-sharing might be abundant but notification is in short supply.

Remember, the Spanish system is not so much ‘nag and remind’ as ‘hide and seek’. Whereas we would expect HMRC to pursue us with increasing urgency for our tax, the Spanish Tax Authority tends to leave it to us to find out how much money we owe them. And then when you just thought they couldn’t find you - they issue a fine.

The process is about the least transparent we

know. If you do owe tax, a letter will be sent to your Spanish home. It doesn’t matter that you are a non-resident. If you are not there: tough. If you don’t respond then your name will go on ‘the boletín’. What! Haven’t you checked the boletín to see if your name is on there today? You’d be a pretty sad person if you had. It’s a very long list of names, around 50 pages long, that is posted daily in each area to ‘inform’ people of their transgressions: unsurprisingly it’s not in the top 100 best seller list.

That wouldn’t matter too much except your name being posted on the boletín signifies that you have been informed and if you don’t respond then it just gets worse. The next stage in their notification procedure might be embargoing your bank account, or even worse, impounding your assets: a very subtle, polite way of informing you that you have tax to pay.

The best way of avoiding all this is to pay your taxes: even better, pay your taxes using a fiscal representative. Your fiscal representative will make sure that taxes are paid on time and will take action if you should receive a notification. That way you don’t have to book in the boletín as your bedtime read.

Treadmill An increasing number of people are making their spiritual life difficult because they are not connecting with their spiritual Guides. Many people may not know that they have a spiritual Guide in any shape and form, and many struggle through life trying to work on spiritual levels with rudimentary and tired Guides who really need to move on.

We were all brought into this World by a Guide. The decision that we would survive, thrive and grow was initially made by the attending Guide, who saw us very safely into the World, and who then promises, with sincerity, that they will assist us in reaching the Spirit World when we pass over. In between, the Guide waits for our instruction, and sadly with some people this will never come. The Guide will do his job and all will be done.

However Guides are awaiting our instruction, and if they do not get it then they are powerless to do very much, though they can advise and protect our souls very adequately, they may not get the chance to do so. Many people cannot connect to Spirit, or feel that they can’t, and so they never get to feel the benefit of that very special person who could be a very efficient and productive influence on their lives. Having that helping hand has always been something rather wonderful that I embraced from being a young man, but I too have had to change Guides when my needs desired it and I have lived very happily with all those who are assigned to work alongside me. A Guide is not a slave. We work together, or rather we should do. We do their work here on Earth and they do ours in the Spirit World; working in tandem, between the spiritual needs of the souls who have passed over and the demands and wants and needs of the living here on Earth. This Earthly life isn’t easy, by all means, but each and every person in the Spirit World knows that only too well because they have all lived at least one life here. This may help to dispel any fear, since many people are in awe of the Spirit World, and do not see those Spirits as being hairdressers, teachers, doctors, lawyers and shop assistants. Real people, now deceased, who led Earthly lives. They too knew what it is like to not be able to pay bills, and to struggle in every way, and they know that they are

Even when something is solved they manage successfully to slot another worry back in place and then start to focus on it. I know, I have been on that treadmill, and made a decision to get off it a long time ago. It leads to nowhere and what is the point of worrying about anything anyway?

We do what we can, nothing more is possible.

But with a Guide by your side the story of life is so different. Yes we encounter the same pitfalls, have doors closed that we would have rather opened, and live on large doses of hope; but how much better to share all this with someone who has dedicated their life to taking care of our everyday wants and needs?

Someone who is equipped to answer our questions, and to help us in making choices; making a difference or just sitting things out, if that is what is the right thing to do. We will still make mistakes, but the mechanism of resolve and repair, the stimulus that motivates and does not judge, and the love that never ever falters can enter our lives, and make a difference. Those who cannot grasp this or do not want it are free in making their choice, but for all of you waiting, take charge. Talk to Spirit any which way you can, and ask for your wants and hopes and desires to melt into one and to come to your side. Ask because you have the right to, wait patiently because the time has to be right and know that you are doing the right thing, and that Spirit will always find a way of rewarding you for what you do best. It’s a lifelong commitment in this World and the next, and they love you whatever you come up with, come rain or shine.

Paula.O’M. Hi there Paula. This is not my usual sort of letter, but I can see both sides of the coin very clearly. If your niece is called to take on this vocation, she has to follow her heart. I am sure that the induction will involve a trial period between the convent and the noviciate, and when and if both sides are happy then she can enter the order as a sister. Remember there are teaching, and nursing and missionary callings within the vows of the Order, and that your niece will have options, including a right to walk away at any time. You will not lose her if you maintain love and respect for her calling.

I hope that your niece does a lot with her life, but I do hope that she is spared any regrets in this, her spiritual calling, and makes a go of it, if that is what she really wants.

Bardem the latest James Bond villain OSCAR-WINNING Spanish actor Javier Bardem is to be the latest in the Bond Rogues Gallery of villains set to hit cinema screens in November 2012.

Murcia Military Weekend Parade

by Louise Clarke ON SUNDAY 16th October British Ex-servicemen’s associations RBL, RNA, RMA, and RAFA are to take part in a spectacular military parade under the auspices of Codex Belix, a Madrid-based association that organises historical and authentic battle re-enactments. The parade is part of a weekend of events beginning on Friday and ending with a closing ceremony.

Four buses will leave from Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and Cuidad Quesada on the Sunday morning to transport around 200 members of the British military associations, to be honoured guests at the static displays as well as principal participants in the parade commencing at 10.30am.

The Torrevieja Pipes & Drums will play a principal role leading the military parade through the central streets of Murcia on Sunday morning, accompanying more than 100 British veterans and their standards and representatives of the Spanish armed forces, to the Avenida Teniente Floresta alongside the river.

The veterans will be given prime seats from which to enjoy an impressive re-enactment of ‘Operation Market Garden’ (the battle leading to the liberation of Holland in 1944: World War II), commencing at around 1pm.

Some 30 military vehicles will be included in the presentation and even parachutists descending from the skies!

Admission to the event is completely free of charge.

The shop opened at 9am, welcoming supporters throughout the day, some simply to have a look around and find out more about the charity and others snatching a bargain or two.

A weekly ‘cut out and keep’ feature helping you to learn basic Spanish for everyday needs

The Letter The sound of the Spanish letter D is sufficiently similar to the English D sound to mean that if we pronounced them both the same we would be perfectly well understood. However, if you listen to Spanish people speaking you will notice they do actually make a different sound when saying this letter. Their sound is softer and more superficial. So, how can we make our “D” sound more Spanish?

Well start by imagining that your tongue is longer and thicker than it really is, to the extent that it starts getting in the way of your front teeth when you pronounce the D sound. Instead of spitting out the sound just using your teeth as we do in English, allow your tongue to touch the back of your front teeth, or even slightly protrude between them, creating a far softer effect.

Now listen to yourself saying a word beginning with D, for example donde (where). Next, say a word with D in the middle, for example lado (side) and try to make the D even softer, and finally make it softer still at the end of a word such as Madrid. Like a number of other letters, the D sound tends to soften more towards the middle and ends of words, and in the case of Madrid you can even hear it sounding like “Madrith” in some accents.

As ever many D words have relatives in the English language: déficit, (deficit), delicado (delicate), decisión (decision), diseño (design), duración (duration) to name but a few. An interesting “estranged relative” occurs with the words diversión in Spanish and “diversion” in English. They certainly look alike, but in fact have come to mean very different things. Whilst the English word means a change in direction, usually referring to traffic, the Spanish word actually means “entertainment”. On the surface these two things have absolutely nothing in common, but the root idea is actually similar – to divert or distract yourself from everyday life by being entertained – diversion!! The Spanish word for diversion is desvío, a familiar fact of life for those of us who live in ar-

eas of urban development. Another D word I rather like is the word detalle which means “detail”, but also means “a small gift”. If, for example, you were to buy your Spanish neighbour a bottle of whisky for looking after your house, he or she might well say “Gracias por el detalle.” “Thank you for the gift”.

The use of detalle here would not imply any judgment on the size of the present!

A common word beginning with D which we hear quite often is dígame which people use to invite us to speak. If we translate this into English is sounds far too abrupt: “tell me”, but in fact this particular form is polite and formal in Spanish. The more familiar informal version of the same command is dime. When you wish to say something to a friend they may say dime to you to encourage you to speak.

Dígame used to be the standard greeting used when picking up the phone, in the old days when we never knew who was phoning.

Nowadays we have little screens to tell us the name of the caller, so it’s very common to see someone look at their mobile and then say dime from which we can deduce that their mobile screen says Mum, or someone similar.

Before we say goodbye to the letter D, there is another thing I would like to point out and that is the prefix “des-” which is the equivalent of the English prefix “un-“ or “dis-“ A prefix is a part tacked on to the front of a word, so if hacer means “to do”, deshacer means “to undo”, conectar “to connect” desconectar “to disconnect”, pegar to stick, despegar to unstuck.

Despegar also means “to take off” when referring to aeroplanes, as though they were “unsticking” themselves from the runway.

And finally, our Spanish saying this week contains two “D” words. It is “Cuánto más deprisa, más despacio” meaning “more haste, less speed” – something we all know, but it doesn’t stop us getting into a pickle from time to time, or perhaps I should just speak for myself!

The best summer ever...

Open Day to Support Caritas

Breast Cancer Awareness Day THE FIGHT against breast cancer continues on the Promenade of Villa Joyosa on Saturday.

‘Anemone’ (a self-help group for women with breast cancer and their families), in collaboration with the Department of Health, has organised during the month of October a series of events to commemorate International Breast Cancer Day (19th October).

Next Saturday (15th October) opens the programme of events with the Reading of the manifesto for Breast Cancer Memorial Day by the Councillor for Health, Beatriz Llinares, on the Paseo Marítimo.

La Vila is to host other events commemorating the International Day for Breast Cancer. Anemone ‘information tables’ are in the Marina Baixa Hospital (Tuesday, 18th October

from 9.30am) and in Mercat Friday, 21st October from 9.30am.

Health Councillor of the Consistory Viler, Beatriz Llinares, explained that: “The goal of the many activities organised

by Anemone is to demonstrate the work of the association and also provide more information on Breast Cancer. Moreover, some of the planned activities are also designed to raise funds for the fulfillment of important

I have the following security, AVG 2011 (free edition), SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes installed on my laptop but seem to have had problems with printing on and off line. In some cases banks are hi-jacking private sales when the buyer, after agreeing a sale, seeks out finance only to be induced by a better mortgage if they buy one of the bank’s properties instead of the one they originally wanted. As this practise becomes more prevalent and banks continue to aggressively cut property prices the outlook for the long term recovery of the property market looks bleak.

So, is the buyer getting a good deal? Buyers should consider the costs that they may face in the future.

For instance, community charges are shared equally amongst the property owners. But if all the properties are not sold then those costs will be borne by existing residents. Of course the bank may still own several properties within the community but experience shows that banks are reluctant to pay their dues and residents have been left in a financial nightmare.

Hibiscus: a good choice for many gardens by

THERE ARE four reasons why we would recommend you to consider including hibiscus plants in your garden: Firstly, there are hibiscus for all situations in Spain, some of which should be more widely known and promoted by garden centres.

Secondly, they are fairly easy to raise from cuttings and in some cases from seeds if friends already have the plants. Thirdly, their flowers are exotic, and fourthly, as mentioned in the chapter on edible flowers in our latest book Living Well from Our Mediterranean Garden, the flowers taste good in salads and make a refreshing infusion.

HARDY VARIETIES The most hardy varieties - that can survive tem-

peratures well below zero - are: The deciduous Hibiscus Syriacus varieties that graced our Windsor Garden: the three white red-throated shrubs in our garden are covered with flowers from June to September. They were grown from cuttings some twenty years ago when the garden was in its infancy).

Blue, purple and white species grace several public areas of our village.

The tree or spreading bush Hibiscus Mutibilis often called ‘Cotton Rose’ as its flowers look like fluffy balls of cotton white that start white and change to pink as they mature. The trees are especially impressive when in full flower with a mix of white, white and pink and fully pink flowers. Our two trees flower in September through to October.

Some semi-hardy varieties withstand a few degrees of frost: The elegant specimen ‘flowered Hibiscus Coccineus: a marsh/pond plant originally from what is now Florida and Georgia in the USA. We have several plants raised from seeds growing in pots in the shallow margins of our two ponds.

The single and double red-flowered varieties of Hibiscus Rosa Sinsensis thought to have originally come from counties surrounding and islands in the Indian Ocean . These are the exotic plants used in many gardens and as garden and street lining hedges.

THE MORE TENDER VARIETIES The white, yellow, orange and pink flowered versions of Hibiscus Rosa Sinsensis. If your garden is in a frost belt it is often best to use these as annuals or plant in containers that can be moved to a greenhouse during the winter months.

The flowers can be dried for the preparation of interesting infusions and when we visited the Botanical Gardens outside Havana, Cuba, we lunched on a hibiscus flower salad. Yes we ate them, and with no other ingredients except for a light salad oil. It was different and delicious so now the flowers often grace our summer salads for decoration and eating by ourselves and adventurous guests. Try them - there are probably still flowers on your bushes.

The trouble with being self employed HAVING JUST won the pools or lottery, just retired or taken early retirement, maybe even had some redundancy money or just plain fed up with being employed, you have therefore decided to strike out on your own - I mean just how difficult could it be? Having just invested a huge amount of cash into your dream which has gone pearshaped or is beginning to go downhill is bad enough, without having someone like me telling you exactly what is going wrong. It is, believe me, a bitter pill to swallow. Bosses really don’t like being told what to do, which is why they are the boss. So, first a little advice to those who are still thinking of taking the plunge…Don’t.

Although many recently closed restaurant sites are available at very reasonable prices, dreaming about it and actually doing it are many miles apart. I tell people that doing exactly what you have always dreamed about is a bit like taking up a hobby, such as playing golf: it’s unlikely to make you money - in fact it’s more likely going to cost you money. If on the other hand you want to make money then I’m afraid you will probably have to do some things that you don’t particularly like doing, remember that? Just like when you were once employed.

Finding the owners of a failing business is usually

easy: if it’s a pub then they are either on the computer, at the bar, on a day off or playing the fruit machines or if it’s a restaurant, “In the office.”

Believe me if you don’t have any customers you won’t need an office. What you like is usually much different to what others like, so filling your trading space with your own personal stuff is no guarantee that your customers will agree with your style, nor will playing your favourite songs be to everyone else’s taste. You can always tell when the boss is “off tonight”, as a member of staff will be playing at a much increased volume, their own particular favourites, for your enjoyment?

One couple we helped remained open until the very early hours of the morning having only recently opened their place. They described the gathered throng of people as “Friends”. So I asked if these friends were the sort of people that they would invite into their own private home. “No, not really” she said. Are they the sort of friends that would invite you into their own private home?

“Probably not” they both agreed. Then they’re customers, not friends.

Being your own boss sounds great as no-one is going to disagree with you as it may just cost them their job. Whatever you say goes, it has to - even when you don’t want to make a decision everyone

will turn to you for advice and there is no-one else to ask. Yes, the buck stops here. If you don’t come up with a solution soon people will begin to wonder if you are competent to be a boss, so sometimes bosses make it up as they go along.

Sometimes, luckily, you get it right but even when it all goes horribly wrong it’s almost impossible for a boss to say “Sorry, I made a mistake.”

Our own Thieves Kitchen Company, in part, consists of a group of such self-employed bosses, spread worldwide, anonymous to outsiders who never-the-less communicate with us, and each other, as well as argue individual points occasionally, without the fear of payment being withheld or anyone being fired.

I remember one particularly arrogant ownerchef who shouted at a nervous waitress who came in with a customer complaint, to tell the customer in no uncertain terms that if he didn’t like his food, which was “brilliant” by the way, that he didn’t know what he was talking about and to clear off and eat elsewhere. I simply suggested that maybe he could convey the message himself much better as the owner, than sending back the waitress; he soon changed his attitude when I then insisted that he go out personally and explain.

I didn’t see any of the Red or Black, a TV show formatted by people around Simon Cowell and not by him as the promotion material is suggesting, that buys audience figures by giving away a million pounds … or not! … on a 50/50 roll of the dice in a Roulette style game. But I am not here to talk about the show as, like I said, I didn´t see any of it. I am more interested in talking about the presenters Ant and Dec, as I struggle to understand why they are employed so much. All they are, in my opinion, is a couple of ‘cheekie chappies’ who were cast members of school drama Grange Hill way back when, and continue to be a couple of kids playing at being grown up, and I don’t know about you but if I had a chance at a million on the roll of a dice I would want someone a bit more mature to steer me through the tension of it all. They would be good at a TV show about the game of marbles for example with people arguing about whether it was in the circle or not, or even better a ´You are It’ show, that would work big time.

I just want to drop in a quick piece on the wee Canadian laddie Justin Beiber who’s beside himself with excitement at the thought of working with Mariah Carey on his Xmas album ‘Mistletoe’, when he´ll be singing a duet with her on ‘All I Want for Xmas is You’, a huge success for Mariah in 1994.

Yes, all you young girl fans of baby boy Beiber, he will also be cranking up a few other Xmas gems on the album in the company of his mentor Usher, Boys 2 Men, rapper Busta Rhymes and country group The Band Perry. BENIDORM’S GAY Business Association (BGBA) is pleased to announce the programme for Benidorm’s first ever gay pride over three days from 21st to 23rd October, attracting thousands of gay men and women from around Europe.

Madrid, Barcelona, Sitges and Gran Canaria have all hosted Gay Prides for many years with great success, each attracting thousands of visitors. Benidorm is the latest resort to step up to the mark. Careful consideration was given to the dates of the event so it didn’t conflict with any other major Pride events in Europe.

Benidorm already hosts a Gay Village in the old town of Benidorm that has been established for many years.

Unfortunately Gran Canaria and Sitges have stormed ahead achieving visitor numbers unheard of in Benidorm.

Benidorm Gay Business Association (BGBA), a collective of over 70 local Spanish, English and Dutch businesses, have planned the event to show how eclectic the gay scene is here in Benidorm. Gay visitors are going to discover the jewel in the Costa Blanca Crown.

Major sponsors feature local and National companies who have thrown their weight behind the event. Spokesperson Julia Grant says that the Town Hall has been so supportive of this event it can obviously see the benefits of encouraging gay tourism to choose Benidorm. The BGBA submitted a 5 year plan to host the event.

Gay Pride 2011 is a community fundraising event and the organisers are selling PledgeBands with a donation of 10€ to go to local charities. Entrance to the park area is by donation but only PledgeBand Holders will be allowed into the main stage arena - the Julio Iglesias Arena where all major artists will be appearing.

A spokesperson for the BGBA hopes all participants and visitors will buy PledgeBands and support the fund for good causes. PledgeBands are available at all BGBA members’ bars and also on the main gate to the event.

The event starts Friday 21st October with a themed Parade: ‘Come as you Dare’. This colourful spectacular will soon become a major event in the Spanish Fiestas calendar - Expect to see the colourful and the outrageous on the streets. The parade will start at Avda Madrid and proceed down Avda de Alcoy, Avda Bilbao Avda Del Mediterraneo, Rotonda de Correos and Parque De La Higuera, finishing at the entrance to the park.

On entering the park, two main stage areas will provide entertainment over the next three nights. Mayor Augustin Navarro will welcome visitors to Benidorm.

HOUGHT PROVOKING and at times wickedly funny, Careline Theatre clambered between the sheets to examine relationships, marriage and sex in A State of Affairs.

By Graham Swannell, it takes a look at the darker side of life – whether thinking of cheating, engaging in an illicit romance, being caught out, or facing up to the damage done.

There was also a lot of evidence that the female of the species – praying mantis like – really is stronger than the male.

The series of four individual plays were a challenge for a talented 11 strong cast and it was a tribute to their skills that last Thursday’s first night in Alcalali was such an enjoyable evening’s entertainment.

However, the demands of the script mean long monologues and quick interchanges of dialogue that did take a toll and at times reliance on the prompt broke up the flow of words.

In ‘Stuttgart’, Dennis Arthurs was bumbling Terrence, a middle-aged man rehearsing how to tell Caroline, his younger wife, that his appetite for “doing it” is declining and makes the mistake of adding his doctor had suggested an affair as a cure.

Caroline, a wonderful Leigh Patterson, is not amused – especially at the suggestion of a ‘once-a-month’ frolic.

She takes control by reminding Terrence of the fun they enjoyed in the German city before stripping to her lingerie to demonstrate. Problem solved.

Wright’s Frances. However, she firmly believed the affair was all about love and has already told Jack’s longsuffering wife Milly (Brenda Taylor) and her own hubby. The die was cast before Milly turns up at the “sordid” room to confront Jack – and his house of cards tumbled down.

‘The Day of the Dog’ was the easiest of the four pieces to digest. A miserable and guilt-ridden Allan – excellently portrayed by Tony Lawley - nurses a stiff whiskey in a pub beer garden. He has been thrown out after confessing to his wife he had bedded a solicitor’s wife. Enter ‘Jack-the-lads’ Andy Crabbe and Jim Sissens, who not only claim to have enjoyed a “dabble” with the same lady, but continually boast of their own conquests, hand out some highly dubious advice – and then pick up two

sun-bathing lovelies.

A tribute to director Lee Walker’s skill in making sure actors without lines continue to perform – illustrated here as Leigh Patterson and Candy Wright actually say very little but are constantly and believably acting.

The final play was ‘Commitment’.

Robin Baxter as Ellis and making a winning debut with Careline, Michele Averard as Joanna, were a young and exhausted couple wondering where the fun in their lives had gone after the birth of their son – and start envying their friends. But when an emotional Julia (Linda Arthurs) arrived to say her husband has run off with the busty help, Ellis and Joanna realise the importance of their family unit – and the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Hello Brian: I refer to your article in the RTN dated 16th - 22nd September. Like your reader, Pat Montgomery, my wife and I had medicals at a local medical centre, on by Brian 4th October 2010 and believed they were good for three years.

For your information I have just renewed my driving licence in UK via the Internet. It took five days from my applying online to receiving the new licence, with no cost or medicals! It appears that the Spanish do everything they can to fleece the expats - or am I being biased?

Too much to put here, but ‘B’ is for normal cars; B+E is for a normal vehicle, e.g. car or van, up to a MAM of 3 500Kg towing a trailer with a MAM of up to 750 Kg: (MAM = maximum authorised mass). The licensing details are quite involved and I bet there are some expats with e.g. horse-boxes etc. unwittingly breaking the law, but as they say, ignorance is no excuse.

BMW FANS look away now if you don’t want to see the interior of the new BMW model to be released today, 14th October; the sixth generation of the popular 3-series.

World’s first ‘super bus’ to hit 155mph A SHEIK from the United Arab Emirates has asked for a ‘super bus’ to take him from Dubai to neighboring Abu Dhabi in under 30 minutes. A Dutch development by an astronaut and a former Formula One aerodynamics expert, the new bus is an electric vehicle costing £7million.

Seat’s new city car is unveiled

The Seat Mii is available in Spain from next month and the rest of Europe in 2012.

THE SEAT Mii, represents the third variation part of Volkswagen’s city car offensive, is expected to go on sale in Spain next month, with the rest of Europe receiving it from spring 2012. Offered with two equipment packages (Chic and Sport) and three trim levels, the 2012 Seat Mii takes its power via 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol, offered with two power stages (60HP and 75HP). 60 HP will emit 105g/Km of CO2 requiring 4.5-litres of fuel per 100km while the 75HP model has CO2 levels of 108 g/km covering 100km on 4.7L of fuel.

The Ecomotive pack available for the new Seat Mii consists of Start Stop and energy recuperation technology to reduce those figures to 97 grammes of CO2 per km: the two models will be able to achieve top speeds of 160 Km/h and 171 Km/h respectively.

The Mii will be fitted with a manual gearbox as standard, with automated transmission also available.

The car comes with the City Safety Assist system which works below 20 mph and warns and prevents collisions by automatically applying the brakes, and the Seat Portable System, integrating Sat-Nav, hands-free communication and on-board computer functions. The price of the Seat Mii is not yet available.

Speaking after the defeat to France, full back Ben Foden said: “The coaches analyse everything to the nth degree. In fact, we have so many meetings analysing the opposition and ourselves.” I wonder if a few of these meetings (dominated by tekkies, their lap tops and endless video clips) should have been replaced by some skills sessions where the majority of England’s players could have learnt how to pass to a man in space, how not to kick the ball directly in to touch, how to catch the ball without knocking it on and how to play to their full potential as opposed to running around like headless chickens. Just a thought…

WE SEEM to be experiencing an ‘Indian Summer’ here in Spain as the weather forecasters keep threatening rain but we keep having beautiful sunny days.

Most courses have now finished their hollow tining although Altorreal started this week and La Peraleja is still to determine when it will start its maintenance programme.

Not a lot of change on the western front regarding autumn deals with those that exist trying to tempt you to play in 4 balls or at twilight times.

The best autumn deals are still at Altorreal and Vistabella where you can still play at competitive rates and taking a drive to La Serena and La Peraleja will result in some of the lowest high season prices available.

LAST WEEK saw the Europro Tour visit Mar Menor Golf & Spa Resort near Torre Pacheco,with their season-ending grand finale – The Tour Championship. Our congratulations go to James Busby who won on the 3rd extra play-off hole after 3 impressive rounds totalling 14 under par!

With such a large event being held at Mar Menor I thought that I would pay a visit to the course and investigate more for myself. Upon arrival it is easy to see why such a tour would choose Mar Menor as the destination for their season ending tournament. With the impressive 5* Intercontinental Hotel, excellent practice facilities and polite caddy staff, Mar Menor impresses from the moment you arrive.

If you are yet to play Mar Menor then I can seriously recommend it. Look out for holes 13,14 and 15, which I thoroughly enjoyed and challenge anyone who plays here not to enjoy this stretch of the course!

ELCHE 7’S Still with rugby, if you’ve been enthused watching the running game served up by Wales in New Zealand, the place for you is the Stadio Martinez Valero in Elche on Tuesday 1st November. That’s the venue for the Elche international 7’s tournament which features men’s teams from England, Scotland, Wales Portugal, France and Spain and a women’s event with sides from Portugal, Holland, France and Spain. This is a serious attempt by the local rugby authorities to bring the IRB 7’s circuit to the Costa Blanca so your support would be much appreciated.

LIVERPOOL BREAKAWAY Liverpool FC has a huge following in the Far East. So big in fact that the club’s Managing Director Ian Ayre wants them to go it alone with regards to negotiating overseas TV rights when the current collective Premier League deals end in 2013. Ayre needs 13 further clubs in the EPL to agree with him for a rule change and that is not going to happen because there’s no way that the smaller earning clubs like Bolton, Wolves and Wigan will support the idea.

You only have to look at the two-horse race that is La Liga here in Spain to work out that rich clubs getting richer (Barcelona and Real Madrid have their own TV deals) does not make for a competitive or interesting league.

And at least they’ve both won something recently. Having done diddly-squat since 2006, Liverpool still receives £23 million as part of the current agreement which isn’t bad for a bunch of serial under-achievers. Instead, perhaps Liverpool could add to their revenue by not paying for Mr Ayre’s transport costs. I mean, it must cost a fortune to fly him return from the Planet Tharg (or whatever planet he lives on) on a weekly basis!

OVER THE last three or four weeks I have received a few calls and emails about the never ending problem of handicaps.

This is a subject that drives most golfers potty. I wonder if we will ever really get a system where we all follow something that is simple and conclusive?

The European Golf Association is responsible for the administration of golf handicaps all over Europe and they have a system that I personally think works perfectly for the type of golf played by most amateur golfers in Europe. Just why we cannot all adopt this system is beyond me and many others who have the responsibility to see fair play.

Practically all of our golf societies have their own way of calculating handicaps to try and make sure that the prizes are spread around the largest percentage of members possible. Why this is so I do not know. Why can the best golfers not continually win until such time as others in the society rise to the challenge?.

The very big problem of course comes when the society golfer comes to play outside his or her society and then have to play off their RFEG handicap or indeed the handicap they brought from the United Kingdom. This often sees them play off handicaps that are considerably higher than they should really be playing off and leads to accusations of cheating.

This then causes considerable problems for those organising ‘open’ competitions - after the winner is announced we often get people asking: how is he playing off that handicap when he plays with XYZ Golf Society off half that? Many people have told me they will not play in League Matches because of the way handicaps are calculated. This means that the best players are not always present in these matches and that should not be the case.

I can fully understand this question being asked but until we see all golf societies get into the real world and agree to use the EGA Handicapping System

we are never going to see this problem resolved.

Amongst many societies there are players who just want to pick up a prize every week or so without ever having a handicap reduction. Now I may be wrong but when I was playing amateur golf I thought the whole idea was to get your handicap lower and be the best you could be. Has that become old fashioned or do we have a breed of golfers who just want to stay in a ‘comfort zone’ and not improve at all?

International Rugby 7’s in Elche

Futbol Club Torrevieja News AFTER MIXED fortunes in back-to-back away games against Muro resulting in a 20 defeat and a Levante B 2-2 draw (which was almost a win but for a last minute equaliser) Torry return to home soil on Sunday with a 6pm kick-off, to play Crevillente.

FC Torrevieja now lies in 7th place and needs to win.

ON TUESDAY 1st November, a Spanish bank holiday, at the Martinez Valero football stadium in Elche, the 7’s European warm up tournament prepares for the IRB 7’s world circuit.

The men’s teams taking part will be Spain, England, Wales, Scotland, France and Portugal: the women’s teams are Spain, Portugal, France and Holland. The more successful we make this great day of international rugby the more chance we have of getting the world 7’s IRB tournaments to Elche for everyone to enjoy. So come along and support this great day out of international rugby. The rugby runs from 10.30am to 7pm with entry at 5€ per ticket or 10€ for a ticket and commemorative t-shirt. Again this week, where the bamboo has grown, most anglers had to cut some vegetation away just to enable a reasonable day’s fishing. The match was the first of the RTN team matches: this is a series of five matches with the best four counting.

This week was the calamity week for me. Just into the last hour of the match, float goes under, I strike and pull back the pole to see my top 2 sections going in a different direction to that of the pole. I watched as they started to go through the undergrowth on the far bank then stopped with just 3-4 inches showing above the surface. Then the record from the Clash came to mind ‘Should I stay or should I go’- kit off down to my underpants and dived into the river: it’s probably easier to say what you won’t catch than to describe what actually might be there!

Anyway I grabbed my pole section with ‘no fish on the end’ and swam back desperately trying not to touch anything. My mate next door helped me out, giving me a low score for the entry but top marks for the recovery... Kids – don’t try this at home…!

The water level has now

dropped about a foot with little flow and is now drying up nicely under the bridge.

All the top Anglers seemed to be drawn together on the first six pegs: this made for an interesting fishing match.

Anglers Together WE HAVE been having a lot of enquiries about licenses from anglers who are passing the ‘magic age of 65’ and therefore pensioners!

Licenses are still required and are free providing you have a Spanish ‘Pensionista’ card; otherwise you will have to pay the normal fees.

Licenses are available from either Town Halls or the Caja Rural Bank if in Valencia region. In Murcia you will also require insurance. Make sure you take photocopies of all relevant documents to obtain your license, i.e. passport photo-page, NIE and insurance.

Anglers Together was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater.

Firm friendships have been formed during the time the group has been active and information on fishing venues and licenses required are available at the meetings or by regular emailed newsletters.

Meetings are held in two locations each month.

Anyone with an interest in fishing (sea or freshwater) is welcome to come along to a meeting to see what we’re about.
