BRITISH expats and holidaymakers are the sole source of funding for a successful scheme distributing food parcels to families in need in a Marina Alta town. Approaching its first anniversary, more than 15,000€ has been donated to the Salvation Army’s Food Programme filling thousands of food parcels – packed with basic foodstuffs and toiletries, including vital baby formula milk and nappies. Mervyn and Debbie Saunders launched the programme in December 2010 from the Salvation Army Church in Denia – the only English-speaking Sally Army church on the Spanish mainland. The couple explained the programme was started after talks with a town hall solicitor and social services. Currently 18 families are receiving weekly help, referred to the scheme by the town hall. They took over running a weekly Songs of Praise at the Port Denia Hotel after they arrived at the church – a service modelled on the television programme and open to expats as well as SAGA holidaymakers staying at the hotel. Mervyn said it was decided to use money from a retiring collection – as well as other donations from expats, other church congregations, and charities – to fund the food distribution project, part of the church’s outreach work. “I said the donations were not for the Salvation Army but for the neediest in Denia,” he explained. “Over night the collection tripled.
