PP romps to power by Jack Troughton
Santa Claus is coming to town
The spirit of Christmas For the fifth year running, Bay Radio is to host its annual Christmas party for the children from Preventorio de Gandia and the Vera Orphanage. Read the full story on page 11.
MARIANO RAJOY, the new Partido Popular prime minister has warned of troubled times ahead and no miracle cures for Spain’s economic crisis. The PP swept to victory in last Sunday’s general election – trouncing the PSOE at the ballot box and winning a healthy majority in parliament. Struggling with high unemployment and unpopular austerity measures, Spaniards – expats are unable to vote – delivered a punishing verdict on almost eight years of socialist government. Voters handed the PP 186 seats in the 350-seat lower chamber compared to 154 at the last election, while PSOE tumbled from 169 seats to 110, the party’s worst ever performance since the restoration of democracy. The victors needed 176 seats for a majority and now enjoy a resounding mandate from a deeply troubled electorate. The PP also has 136 seats in the Senate to PSOE’s 48.
Italy premiers were forced by mounting financial and economic pressures to resign, making way for interim ‘unity’ governments led by technocrats. However, it gives 56-yearold Mr Rajoy a great advantage when he takes the helm next month and the PSOE flag is hauled down in Madrid – he has the backing of the country and enjoys a freshly elected majority. As thousands of jubilant supporters celebrated in the streets and the country turned PP blue, Mr Rajoy thanked people for their support but remained in sombre mood. “It is no secret to anyone that we are going to govern in the most delicate circumstances Spain has faced in 30 years,” he said. “For me, there will be no enemies but unemployment, the deficit, excessive debt, economic stagnation, and everything else that keeps our country in these critical circumstances.

Spain is the third southern European country in a fortnight to see its government toppled by the debt crisis rampaging through the Eurozone – in Greece and
“There won’t be any miracles. We never promised any. But as we have said before, when things are done properly, the results come in.” Continued on page 4

Town nets trawler
The Pacurri
by Jack Troughton
An impression of the finished boat
HISTORIANS FACE a race against time to restore a traditional Valencian fishing boat suffering the ravages of time. Built in 1932, The Pacurri is one of the last surviving examples of a once common design – and although fitted with an engine in later life, it was originally rigged for sailing. The Association de Barques Traditionals de Xabia has moved the boat from Calpe to land owned by Javea Council and fund raising has begun to reach the 400,000€ needed to get her to sea again – with all the modern navigation and safety aids.
Illegal dump in Finestrat THE INDUSTRIAL area of Finestrat is becoming a byword for garbage with illegal dumping reaching epic proportions. A municipal plot within the area is fenced off and contains tons of cardboard, plastic waste, wood, old furniture and a number of appliances collected from the streets. In addition there is an ‘illegal’ dumping area where construction waste spills into the road. Mounds of waste are visible from all sides of the perimeter fence in an area the size of a football field and where algae has been dumped, a green viscous liquid seeps over the ground. Discarded palm fronds, old sofas and chairs, plastic containers and a collection of bottles and cans crowd against a sign that says: ‘No littering and debris’. A government spokesman says the problem is to be addressed with fines.
The association believes restoration is essential to protect the area’s rich maritime heritage – and the trawler should become both a floating museum and tourist attraction. The Pacurri had been anchored in Calpe harbour after being taken out of service and in a shipyard since 2008. However, without proper maintenance for a wooden-hulled ship time took its toll and by December 2008 it was half submerged in water – but lifting it onto dry land caused further deterioration. The association identified the trawler as a possible project in 2005 and now has a programme to restore the boat to its former glory.
No local tax increase next year says Ondara
THE PP government team of Ondara City Council has announced its decision not to raise local taxes next year. Mayor Joaquín Ferrando confirmed that the local rates are frozen for several years and as an alternative a proposal that modifies fees for use and enjoyment of public spaces has been tabled to bring budgets to an acceptable level.

Alicante: the retirement years Jack Troughton THE PROVINCE of Alicante continues to be host and “welcome” the migration of retired people choosing to build a new life in the sun. Attracted by the European Union’s freedom of movement for citizens, the region has become home to thousands of people from northern member states – many of them pensioners. And on Monday the provincial government the Deputacion de Alicante staged its fourth ‘dialogue’, a seminar to help the integration of the non-Spanish population, which now outnumbers natives. The conference in Calpe was attended by government representatives, town mayors and councillors, British Vice-consul Lloyd Millen, the Belgian consul, and expat groups and charities. Mayor of Benissa Juan Bautisa Rosello opened the seminar and said it was an opportunity to debate the problems, advantages and disadvantages of living in the province. HOST “Alicante is a hosting land and a welcoming land,” he said. “The nonSpanish population is now greater than the Spanish population. It is also the most European area in Europe – we have residents of all the European countries – there is no
Prof Mayte Echezarreta
other region in the world like it.” And he said a round table discussion would examine the problems of the aging European population “residents who have chosen us, Alicante, as a place to spend their retirement years and stay with us for the last period of their lives.” Professor Mayte Echezarreta, an expert of law at Malaga University, is part of a think tank examining the migration of pensioners into Spain – a “complex” phenomenon labelled ‘gerontomigracion’. “I research the mobility of elderly people, citizens of retirement age who choose destinations in Spain to spend that stage of their lives.” CONCERN She said such migration was a “concern” for both the host country and the country of origin “which is liable and responsible for citizens.” And Ms Echezarreta said the
movement came under the umbrella of the EU and the concern was they should be able to access social services and of support agencies. “Our main concern is the lack of information available to the citizen. They must have access to someone to deal with their issues,” she said. The professor said after five years there was now a 10 point “test” for institutions to mark how they were suited to welcoming migrants. And she underlined the importance of people registering on the local town hall census, the Padron, so the authorities knew of their existence and to be a gateway to help and “harmonise” the transition to life in a new country. However, the professor also said EU member states also had their own laws which governed the lives of migrants and the assistance available – and matters such as inheritance and taxation.
Continued from front page Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who had not sought a third term in office, saw his popularity plummet in the boom to bust years as the economic crisis deepened and widespread austerity measures were enacted. Defeated PSOE candidate Alfredo Perez Rubalcala said his party would fight to protect the welfare state from the spending cuts the new government has pledged to make to meet EU demands for deficit reduction. Mr Rajoy has already called for Spaniards to make a “common effort” to combat the ongoing crisis and insisted the country’s voice needed to be heard in Brussels as delicate negotiations continue. “We will stop being a problem and instead form part of the solution.” And he said Spain stood at a crossroads that would determine the future of the country “not just in the next few years but for decades.” The PP has promised to protect pensions, which are inflation linked, and reduce taxes for small and medium sized businesses but the party has yet to indicate how these will be financed. Mr Rajoy has promised to be “watchful” as he faces the mammoth task of restoring investor confidence and lowering the cost of borrowing – Spain’s ten-year bonds have briefly touched the 7% yield mark against this year’s target of 6%, and next year’s goal of 4.4% may require massive cuts to achieve. This week’s Economist warned: “Fiscal contraction will only exacerbate the economic downturn – 23% of Spaniards aged 16 to 24 are currently out of work and growth has ground to a halt.” The respected publication predicted deeper reforms were also needed. “The multi-tiered bureaucracy is highly inefficient and the banks have fallen ill from their indigestible loans to real estate developers.” The economist concluded: “Spain has much to be proud of...it has much less debt than Italy or Greece – but if private debt is considered, then Spain has a higher percentage of debt per capita - and unlike those peers, who are now led by unelected technocrats, it has chosen its own captain to guide it through the storm.”
Possibility of Iberia pilots’ strike in December
IBERIA PILOTS have reaffirmed the possibility of calling a strike in December, after the meeting of the Flight Centre this week that included cabin crew (TCP). In the absence of information on the new ‘low cost’ airline Iberia Express, the pilots maintain their position and their belief that the structure of the company favours the growth and expansion plans of British Airways to the detriment of the Spanish airline. Concerns includes the decision to transfer 40 aircraft to the new Iberia Express and the possible reduction of 28 long haul planes, seen as direct contradiction of the assurance at the merger that Iberia would expand. Further talks are expected to take place at the end of November. The Committee of Iberia Flight Centre represents 4,500 employees of the airline pilots and cabin crew, and is composed of 32 individuals.
Monsters of the Moraira lagoon
FoA teamwork
by Jack Troughton KEEN CONSERVATIONISTS have been hard at work weeding out the ‘aliens’ from the protected El Senillar lagoon in Moraira that threaten native species. Last Saturday, 28 members of the local Friends of Avinenca (FoA) joined in an Action Day at the lagoon, adjacent to L’Ampolla Beach – home to a number of endangered species of flora and fauna. The group has been working with Teulada Moraira Town Hall for more than 12 months to improve the quality of the protected area and the team was supported by councillors and council workers in a number of tasks, includ-
ing strimming back undergrowth, removing plant debris, reed cutting, and tree lopping. El Senillar project co-ordinator Trevor Kemp told RTN: “We also removed non-indigenous plants which are threatening the survival and propagation of native species.” The FoA is part of the Avinenca Network, a body set up to encourage the participation of expats in the conservation, culture, and heritage of the Valencia region. And the day ended with the team enjoying a barbecue meal provided by the town hall at a local restaurant. More details on the Avinenca initiative can be found at www.avinenca.es or email Paul Pruden, the FoA leader, on teulada.forall@yahoo.es

Are you sure about cancelling your private health cover?
by
Jennifer Cunningham
IT’S THAT time of the year again, when people start to plan for the next year, and working out their budgets. Some times when an health insurance policy has either little use or none at all it may seem a good idea to consider cancelling it, to try and save costs , especially if a SIP card is to hand. Some see this type of insurance as a luxury. In the UK, Private health is often seen as unecessary and sometimes people are rebuked for taking it out. I don’t see anything wrong in paying extra for private cover. It helps take some pressure off the Nartional Health and the main factor is of course the speed that you can be diagnosed and admitted to Hospital, this instant access may even save your life. Another added bonus is having the joy of a private room, with a bed for a companion included in the premium. I say a bonus because to share a room with a very sick stranger is not, if we are totally honest, what we would choose and is not conducive to the healing process. Then of course if it is a Spaniard the noise of their famly can be pretty daunting. Of course budgets have to come into it but my company have some extremely good offers on Health insurance at the moment. Mandy, the companies health administrator who is kept constanly busy arranging appointments for clients and assisting where ever possible is becoming a little concerned at people’s expectations of the national health system. A number of cancellations occur every year due to people becoming eligible for a SIP card. This reasoning now requires extra thought. The Social Security System is un-
der severe financial pressure and one of the causulties are the Hospitals . For an example, the Denia hospital has a shortage of Consultants which means very long waiting times for appointments, scans and operations. Services such as Physotherapy after operations or, just to get limbs and backs working properly, suffer from a huge backlog. This all could mean living with constant pain and delay the healing process. Recent news informs us that the Valencian Goverment has closed down 20% of bed spaces in their hospitals. On emergencies they are still managing to do an excellent job, but the pressure being placed on the staff is, I would imagine, very stressful. I also understand there are a number of medical suppliers who are experiencing financial problems due to their invoices not being met promptly. I have two members of staff who are in constant pain, one who is still waiting after eighteen months for a full diagnosis and a start date for treatment to begin and the other who has just started on the long haul, to find that the waiting list for the orthapaedic consultant is at this moment in time 8 months. Another vital reason to think very carefully before cancelling your health insurance are Pre Existing Conditions. After a year with Asssa you are covered for any condition or illness that you may develop in the future. If you cancel and want to either rejoin or go to another company all those pre-existing conditions that were previously included will no longer be eligible for cover.
I am sure there will be people who will accuse me of only trying to sell insurance, stop cancellations happening and alarm them. However, I am just not talking about my clients, but anybody who has had, up to now the benefits of Private Health Insurance. All I can say to this developing situation, is watch the Spanish television and read the Spanish newspapers, it is constantly being discussed and written about. The Spanish are well aware of their wonderful National Health being very over loaded with patients and at the same time suffering cut backs, and are becoming increasingly frustrated. Unfortunately, we take our good health for granted, it is only when we become ill, either mildly or with a critical condition that we realise just how precious our health is and that no amount of money can buy good health. In fact as I am writing this, a client called in to inform Mandy how grateful she is that both she and her husband have private health , as it was only due to the annual Well Man checkup available on some of Asssa’s policies, that prostrate cancer was discovered and treated immediately therefore saving the gentleman’s life. The client commented that no way would this have been discovered and treated so quickly on the state health system. If you are reading this and you have sent in a written cancellation to the corresponding company, can I suggest that you think deeply about your decision, you still have time until the 31st December before action is taken by the Health Company legally cancelling your policy.

Velvet and brocade costumes getting soggy and smelly in the Fester Museum
IN CALPE water leaks in the Fester Museum is threatening to damage the valuable archive of spectacular Moors and Christians costumes. The delicate fabrics that make up the costumes include velvet, brocade and silk braiding, beginning to wrinkle and smell of damp. The councillor for culture, Manuel Cabrera, proposes moving the costumes with some urgency to the Comic Strip Museum building, offering not only dry but also free storage – whereas the Fester Museum rent costs the municipality 615€ per month.

Alicante Airport Assistance WITH LOTS of British expats returning to the UK for the Christmas holidays, many of them will be using the new terminal at Alicante Airport for the first time.
Assistance point at Alicante airport
by Louise Clarke RTN was asked if we knew about the Airport Assistance Service for people with reduced mobility and about how those people are helped when embarking on a flight. As we didn’t have the faintest idea and keen to help our readers, we have endeavoured to find out. If you need assistance at the airport, you must in the first instance inform your airline of your needs. Additionally and optionally and only for assistance at Spanish airports, you can also inform the airport directly on their free phone number on 902 404 704 or register on their website at www.aena.es. HELP By doing this, you will be given a meeting time at the airport. If you choose not to do this, you must be at the airport at least two hours prior to the scheduled departure time and register at the Assistance Meeting Point which, at the new Alicante terminal, is located just inside the furthest door of Departures. Let them know that you have arrived (there is usually at least one person manning the desk during busy
times, but you may need to use the intercom) and once registered, one of their friendly assistants will pick you up from there. You will then be assisted and accompanied during the check-in process and at the security checkpoints, until you are in your seat on the plane. They will also help with all your luggage and personal needs. If you are travelling back into Alicante Airport, the Assistance Service can also meet you at the plane and retrieve your luggage and then accompany you to the arrivals department where you can meet up with friends and relatives. REQUEST The service is available to any passengers who are entirely immobile and not self sufficient and blind and deaf passengers as well as those passengers who can board and move on the aircraft on their own but need help getting to and from the aircraft. One of the assistants told RTN: “Please make your readers aware that if they don’t request the service far enough in advance (48 hours) the quality of service rendered cannot be guaranteed.” So, there you have it! Happy travelling!
King Juan Carlos sports a black eye ACCIDENT-PRONE King Juan Carlos is sporting a bruised left eye after a domestic accident at the Zarzuela Palace on Tuesday. The king collided with the side of a door after an aide tried to open it on the other side, smacking his majesty in the eye and the side of his nose. The accident did not prevent the king from attending to his royal duties, albeit in a snazzy pair of sunglasses. He received several newly-appointed ambassadors and later in the afternoon attended the Research Council to present the SEO-Birdlife FONDENA VIII Award for 2011.
Important Changes to Notarial Services at Alicante Consulate
By Louise Clarke A new appointment system for notarial work will be introduced at the Consulate in Alicante from December. The appointment system will mean that you can avoid queuing and will ensure that the Consulate can deliver the service in a more customer-friendly and efficient manner. Anyone who is planning to go to the Consulate in Alicante for a notarial service from 1st December onwards should ensure they make an appointment beforehand. Before the new online appointment system is introduced in the New Year, appointments can be booked by emailing the British Consulate in Alicante at alicante.consulate@fco.gov.uk with ‘Notarial Appointment Request’ in the subject area. Those who do not have access to email can call the Consulate on 902 10 93 56 or send their request by fax on 965 14 05 28. This will not affect applications for Emergency Passports, which will continue to be available from 08:30-13:30 from Mondays to Fridays, without prior appointment.

The spirit of Christmas by Jack Troughton DOZENS OF excited youngsters will be heading for a winter wonderland next month when Bay Radio throws its annual Christmas Party. The Costa’s leading radio station plays host to children from the Preventorio de Gandia from the north of its expanding region and from the Vera Orphanage, familiar to listeners on the Costa Almeria. And for the fifth consecutive year, the party is taking place at Javea’s football ground, where more than 70 kids aged between three and 13 will enjoy a grand day out on Tuesday 13th December. The crisis has meant the numbers of children is the two homes has increased and the Javea-based radio station is appealing for
gifts suitable for the youngsters – and cash donations to buy much need clothing and help pay utility bills over the winter period. Father Christmas will be at the party and hand each child their present, as well as helping to keep the youngsters entertained. PLEASURE Bay Radio director Andy Stammers told RTN: “It is an absolute pleasure to be organising the party again this year – it is our fifth year of supporting this brilliant cause.” He explained cash donations were also critical in keeping the homes running, helping pay for central heating and the electricity to power industrial sized tumble dryers. “The presents are very welcome but we have an ongoing pledge to provide the children with clothing and bedding and such. At Gandia,

for example, they currently need 56 pairs of children’s shoes – just do the maths, it is a big outlay.” Toys should be new and if wrapped be tagged to indicate the age and sex the present is suitable for - and they can be dropped off at: Bay Radio, Ctra Cabo La Nao, Javea; next door at Maddie’s Fish Bar; the information point at Ondara Shopping Centre; The Fundraiser Shop, Avenida del Almeria 74, Turre; The fundraiser Shop Vera, opposite the Dia Supermarket; and the Laude Lady Elizabeth Junior School in Cumbre del sol, Benitachell, and the Senior School in Lliber. Banco de Valencia nationalised after being abandoned by Bankia THE STATE has dismissed the board of directors and will inject one billion in capital and €2,000 million in cash against sale. As always happens on these occasions customers have withdrawn massive deposits in the last weeks from the Bank of Valencia while it spiralled into a management crisis following the announcement of a €600 million accounting ‘hole’, now suspected to be nearer €1,500 million. FROB management of the bank will for the time being be through José Manuel Oliver (who has worked for BBVA and was president of its subsidiary One-e), Margarita Reyes and Fernando Viladomat (former director of Caixa Catalunya.

The Consequences of Smoking!
by
Alan Gilchrist The Costa Blanca’s Top Hypnotherapist
Do you really want to stop smoking? THEN FAST Track Hypnosis will help! Over my 25 years in practice I have seen just about everything that can happen, health wise, to smokers and have listened to them as they would describe their symptoms to me. Millions of people throughout the world have successfully stopped smoking using standard Hypnosis, and over the years I have helped many tens of thousands to do so using my Fast Track Hypnosis & Laser Therapy to quit and in ONE under 30 minute session which I developed and proved it on TWO consumer programmes. The heaviest smoker that I ever treated was smoking 160 cigarettes per day and the youngest was just 9 years of age! All smokers perceive different benefits from smoking e.g. relaxation, concentration, relief from boredom, etc. If they only knew the substances that were in cigarettes it would certainly open their eyes as to the harm they are doing to themselves. Many years ago I had the opportunity of working in a laboratory testing the many compounds in tobacco and analysing the results. There are in fact over 600 ingredients in a cigarette ranging from the bizarre to the deadly. I have listed some of them to highlight the main deadly ingredients a cigarette contains. The main ones only are listed below; Formaldehyde… used for embalming dead bodies Ammonia … household bleaches Acetone… paint stripper Cadmium…. used in batteries Aluminium… linked with Alzheimer’s disease Hydrochloric acid…. industrial agent Ethanol … used in antifreeze Furfural… industrial alcohol Maltol… strong alcohol Para-methoxycinnamaldehyde… slug pellets Nicotine… highly toxic nerve poison. A dosage of fifty thousandths of a gram will kill a person. Carbon monoxide… compound produced by car exhausts D.D.T…banned pesticide
Hydrogen cyanide… Used in gas chambers in the U.S.A The three stages of smoking a cigarette
Stage 1, First 3rd After the first few inhalations of a cigarette the serious harm has begun. Smoke has to travel through the entire length of the cigarette carrying with it tar and nicotine, and then concentrating it in the last 3rd of the cigarette. Small particles of nicotine and other chemicals start to irritate the delicate tubes inside the lungs. Second 3rd More smoke is inhaled and the chemicals then start to coat the tubes with an oily tar substance, forcing them to produce thick phlegm. This in turn makes the lining of the tubes more prone to infection by germs, causing even more damage. Final 3rd Tobacco smoke that is now inhaled is so concentrated with tar that it coats the lungs, causing more irritation and producing much more clinging phlegm than the other two parts put together. The Consequences of Smoking ! The human body can protect itself and eventually recover from many severe and emotional problems relating to smoking. However, after about 20 years the body begins to lose the ability to do this and to defend itself against the dangerous chemicals that suppress the immune system. The immune system is the first line of defence against these terrible infections and diseases and without this ability to defend itself the way is open for very catastrophic illnesses. This is a chart of what can happen to the body over 20 years Years of Smoking 0-5, Bad Breath, Clothes Smell, Stained Fingers, Stained Teeth 5-10, Smokers Cough, Lack of Energy, Poor Circulation, Numbness 10-15, Sinus Problems, Raspy Voice, Headaches, Sleep Problems
15-20, Constant Cough, Allergies Advanced ageing of skin, Diminished Libido 20+, Diminished Concentration, High Blood Pressure, Severe Circulation Problems, Heart Attack, Sexual Dysfunction, Emphysema, Confusion, Loss of Memory Cancer: Oral, Tongue, Oesophagus, Lungs, Stomach, Intestinal, Spleen, Liver, Colon Depression, Osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s Disease, Stroke DEATH My advice is to stop now, while you have time to stop! These are two letters I received this week. “ I was a smoker for almost 30 years - at age 42 I decided enough was enough - I wanted to be around for my 2 girls in later life. So I had to stop smoking! My 2 girls were my motivation! I visited Alan Gilchrist on November 1st 2001 was Hypnotised and within ONE half hour I became a non smoker. I have never smoked since , nor have I been tempted. I can honestly say this was the best decision I had ever made. Within months I felt healthier, happier and had such a great sense of achievement , that I cannot praise Alan enough. This is an honest testimonial, truly from the heart and with so much gratitude. If I can stay off the cigarettes ANYONE can !!! So don’t waste time thinking about it - make the call. You will be so glad you did. Majella......” “ I had been smoking 35 years. The last 15 would have seen me smoke up to 35 to 40 a day. Superb AFTER ALL the bad press about TELEFONICA I just had to write about the service I recieved. I visited the Movistar office in Rojales to report my phone was not working. The girl in the office phoned Telefonica for me, obtained an English speaking operator who infomed me that an engineer would attend to the fault in 6hrs. 2hrs later the phone rang and the engineer asked if everything was OK. I informed him that there was still crackling on the line. He came to my house, replaced the telephone socket and did various tests. This took about 15mins. I then signed his work sheet. Total time from reporting the fault to the complete repair 2hrs.30mins. Superb service!

letter of the week
Sorry for the insult! MAY I begin by saying the letters page in RTN is great, and I love the cartoon that accompanies the letter of the week. This past week saw the national election in Spain. I was reasonably satisfied to see the results of the election and the defeat of the incompetent socialists under Mr. Bean’s look alike P.M. Zapatero. Sorry for insulting Mr. Bean by comparing him to Zapatero. I had hoped the socialists would have got what they really deiserved and been completely wiped out after the damage they have inflicted on Spain with five million people unemployed. The socialists didn’t even have a shred of humility to admit it was their fault for the economic crisis in this country. I dare say Mr. Bean would have been more competent than Zapatero. I can’t help but feel sorry for the incoming P.M. Mariano Rajoy and the daunting task of trying to clean up the disaster left by the socialists. Perhaps Mariano Rejoy can ask Mr. Bean for some advice. Lucy P. Orihuela Costa
It’s outrageous
Another Don Quixote?
WITH REGARD to your ‘letter of the week’, issue 631, one can sympathise with the writer’s problem with cavalier community presidents and administrators! The important thing is to have a representative committee which has the power to make decisions along with the president, and also oblige him,or her, to respect decisions made beforehand by the Assembly of owners. The president’s function is one of legal representation of the community, not arbitrary dictatorship! Much behaviour on communities is marked by group clannishness and virtual thuggery and the victims are often minorities who just want to pay their dues and lead a quiet life. They need to make sure their voices are heard by having committee representation. That a president can enjoy a free computer and internet ‘to keep an eye on the community’, without consulting the owners, is outrageous! Regards, Charles Dowling
We must be more careful
MIGHT MARIANO Rajoy prove to be just another Don Quixote? Tilting his lance at the inaminate as Miguel Cervantes wrote. Ineffectual administrator similar to Zapatero his predecessor? Or dynamic economical visionary; Eurozone financial renovator. As a carefree cavaliero; or a caballero striking the right note. Neil Burman, San Miguel De salinas. In the twilight of life, but still a little boy’s mentality trapped in an old man’s body.
WHEN I was awaiting my family at Alicante airport, I idly counted people coming through to the Salida/Exit. You may not believe me, but out of 100 women only 16 had hold of their handbags which sat on top of their luggage. Speaks a lot you surely must agree. Meri Jenkins
Let’s show that we care for them
PLEASE THIS year when you send out your Christmas cards, would you send an extra one to injured soldiers that have risked everything for us. The address is:- A Recovering Soldier c/o Queen Elizabeth Hospital Mindelsohn Way Edgbaston Birmingham B15 2WB. Thankyou. Lets show them how much we care
Check their reputation I WAS a resident of Spain, living in Torrevieja for seven years, now returned to the UK. I thought this story would interest your readers. I had a British registered car, which when I came to live in Spain was re-registered there. I then went to a reputable insurance broker in Torrevieja and arranged insurance with a Spanish company. When I decided to return to England I checked that my car would be covered for the journey and for how long in the UK. I was told three months after which I would have to arrange another insurer. Unfortunately, before I could do this someone attempted to steal my car. They broke the door lock completely out of the door and wrenched off the steering wheel. I contacted my insurance company and they arranged for the car to be towed to a garage on 11th August. I am still waiting for the final decision from the insurers! I am in constant contact via email with the broker, but I am told there is nothing they can do to speed up the process.
This has been a long catalogue of delay and frustration! As I am partly disabled it is lucky that I am staying with my sister or I would have no means of transport other than public. I was informed that the courtesy car that I paid extra for was not applicable outside of Spain - something I was never made aware of before! I cannot understand why there has to be such delay, even taking into account the ‘manaña factor’ in Spain. My latest information is that the insurer will not agree to the car being repaired due to its age, so now I am again waiting to see what compensation they are prepared to give me before I can attempt to obtain another car. I hope that this information will alert anyone in a similar situation to thoroughly check out what their insurance covers and their reputation for a quick response, before undertaking any trip to the UK in a Spanishinsured vehicle. Easy Horse Care Christmas Card Campaign by Patricia Thompson WHO IS on your Christmas card list this year? Family, friends, neighbours....well how about Molly the Pony in America? It is the idea of the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHCRC) in Rojales who want youngsters in the area to send an extra special Christmas wish to a very special pony which has inspired the survival and recovery of Easy Horse Care’s Faith, whose story has been well documented this year. Faith arrived at the rescue centre in August 2010 with severe injuries to her leg that, despite receiving pioneering treatment, meant that she needed to have her leg amputated; a procedure very rare on horses. Identical in size and with a similar injury on the same leg to Faith, the centre quickly developed a strong relationship with Molly’s owners in Louisiana and their vets who made the surgery a viable option for Faith. Now, as
Faith happily gets on with life at EHCRC, founders Rod and Sue Weeding are making an emotional trip to Louisiana to meet with Molly. “We are also going to collect Faith’s new leg and that will be her Christmas present!” an excited Sue explained to RTN. She added that it cost hundreds of euros last time to get the limb shipped over from the USA, so they will be personally collecting this one using their own personal savings. MAKE A DIFFERENCE Molly’s message is to help children, especially children who, like Molly, have a disability. Her fame led to the creation of Molly’s Foundation which administers educational programs and rehabilitative programs for children to improve their social, ethical, mental and emotional health. Sue also sees Faith’s future going a similar way and is keen to get more children aware of their stories and interested in horses. “We
want to make kids think and to make them feel that their card is special and they can make a difference.” The couple leave for America on Saturday 17th December and would like to receive cards by Thursday 15th December. You can hand your cards in directly to the Rescue Centre in Rojales or leave them with staff at either of the two charity stores situated in Quesada or La Siesta. GUIDED TOURS The EHCRC relies only on charitable donations. They are open to the public all year round every day from 1-4pm and on Sundays and Wednesdays, they have guided tours. Visitors can also enjoy a light lunch or light refreshments available in the café garden, and all proceeds go towards the support of the centre. For more information visit our website Sue and www.easyhorsecare.net or call Sue on Faith 652 021 980.

Need a Quick Fix? WITH ENERGY prices literally going through the roof, surely there is something that we can do to slow things down? There must be a course of action that will give us respite from the price increases that we keep reading and hearing about. The fact is, there are numerous relatively ineffective things we can do that may have some small effect on our monthly bill. What we are looking for, what we need, is something more substantial than low voltage light bulbs and timer switches. So what else is there? If you want something more than just a quick fix, something that will make a real difference to your future bills, you should pick up the phone and call Iberswitch SL. They offer protection from price increases for up to two years! They will switch you from your existing electricity company to the company which offers the best rates and terms and, as the market changes and competition gets hotter, will switch you again, and again. But the best part? They handle the entire transfer process from start to finish. It is a little known fact that there are 160 electricity companies operating in Spain, the Iberswitch intelligent system places your account with the company that offers you the best opportunity to maximise your savings. Historically, January is the month with the highest price increase - last January 9.9%! We don’t know what this January will bring until it happens but we do know, if you act now, you can avoid it. by Jack Troughton MEMBERS Of the Women In Business Club voted to stage two White Ribbon Day events as a shop window and a charity fund raiser – and the public responded to make it a success. Last Sunday saw hundreds of people visit the Denia Marriott Hotel for the first part of day which marks a global condemnation of domestic violence. And the second part of the “experiment” is today (Friday 25th November) at the Hotel Diamante Beach, Calpe, and WIBC hopes to again attract the crowds between 10am and 6pm. All the trade stands were taken at the Marriott and for the first time men were allowed to join in. The day was also packed with live music, fashion shows, and dance troupes who entertained visitors. And the annual event was also a WIBC fund raiser, the group supports women’s refuges in the region – domestic violence is on the increase and there are five
shelters filled with women and children who have fallen victim to the plague. Chris Duffin, WIBC’s new president, told RTN: “We have two hats to wear – one is supporting our businesses and the second is supporting charities. Members wanted to focus more on business because times are hard. “One suggestion was we have two shows to mark White Ribbon Day and because we might not be able to fill both, open the event to non-members, including men, and generate more footfall to sustain two events,” she said. “Members voted via our website and the majority wanted two shows. It is an experiment and it may or may not happen again next year. That will depend on the members.” She admitted allowing men to take part was a new strategy. “However, White Ribbon day was actually started by men in recognition of and to raise awareness that there was too much domestic violence in the world.”

John Pattinson: Obituary THE FUNERAL took place this week of Los Montesinos resident John Pattinson, who died suddenly, aged 59, while on holiday in Australia. Recently retired John and his wife Fiona spent time together on holiday on the Costa Blanca after purchasing a property at La Herrada, Los Montesinos. “It has come as a great shock to many of his friends in Spain. John will be sadly missed and the Community send heartfelt condolences to his wife Fiona and family,” said friend and neighbour Andrew Atkinson. John, who left wife Fiona, was a devoted dad of Paul, Claire and the late Becky. The funeral service took place at St. Mary’s Church, Maryport on 21st November, followed by interment in Maryport Cemetery.
Javea honours the International Brigades MORE THAN 200 people turned out on Saturday to honour the International Brigades, a tribute to the thousands that flocked to Spain to support the Republic in the fight against fascism. The emotional event included the personal stories of Javea residents Maggie Moran and John Catanach, whose relatives fought with the Brigades to defend the Republic during the 1936 – 1939 Spanish Civil War. Expert Linda Palfreeman spoke of the “relatively unknown work” carried out by many British volunteers and also of the British contribution to medical services during the conflict.

Spanish lessons by

The Letter
‘J’
THE LETTER J joins the ranks of least favourite Spanish letters amongst English speakers, because it is one of the hardest ones to pronounce. We’ve already talked about the sound itself because it is the same as one of the pronunciations of the letter G, which is the throaty sound like the “ch” in the Scottish word “loch”. We saw that the letter G only makes this sound when followed in a word by an “e” or an “i”, whereas the letter J always makes this sound, wherever it appears in a word. You will find the letter J at the beginnings of words, such as “jugar” (to play), in the middle as in “rojo” (red) and at the end as in “reloj” (watch or clock). As I mentioned when we were looking at the letter G, if you find it impossible to produce a really harsh “j” sound, then you can lighten it down to a “h” sound, just make it as noisy as possible, as if you were panting having just run round the block. Alternatively, you could run round the block, but that is a bit drastic and not a very practical solution. There is a wide variety of words beginning with “J” which remind us of similar English words, and here are just a few: jersey (jersey or jumper), jirafa (giraffe), jaguar (jaguar), justo (just), juvenil, (youthful, without the negative connotations of juvenile), justicia (justice), justificar (justify), Japón (Japan), japonés (Japanese – notice that in Spanish nationalities do not start with capital letters.) As usual there are words beginning with J that look like English but have a different meaning. One of these is the Spanish word “junta”. This means some sort of ruling or governing body, but does not have the negative connotation it has in English, where it is only associated with a military style of absolute rule. We have a “junta directive” for example which means a committee. Of course, you may have your own opinion about committees but they
are not supposed to carry machine guns as a rule. Another frequently heard word is the translation of “young” which is “joven”. Young people as a social group are referred to as “los jóvenes”. They are in contrast to another important section of society, those who are “jubilado” or “jubilada” meaning of course “retired”. Most of the retired people I know really like this word and prefer it to the rather prosaic “pensionista”. “Justo” is an interesting word as it shares a similar dual meaning as its English equivalent “just”. We can talk about a “just” person in English and a “persona justa” in Spanish, as someone who is fair, or who lives a morally correct life. From this we have the word “justice” which is “justicia” in Spanish. The two languages also share the other meaning of “just” as in “exactly” or “just right”. We can say “el precio justo” the right price or “el tamaño justo” “just the right size”. Probably the commonest name in Spain begins with the letter J, José. He is particularly relevant this month as the 19th March is the celebration of San José in the city of Valencia. This celebration is better known as the Fallas which consist of enormous and incredibly artistic effigies made of wood and papiermâché going up in flames in an orgy of noise, fire and water. It is quite an extraordinary event. The day of San José is also Father’s Day in Spain, which is a holiday in Valencia and Murcia but not all over Spain. And so to this week’s saying. It contains the word juego meaning game, but in this case with the idea of gambling or “gaming”. Here it is: “Afortunado en el juego, desafortunado en amores”. Lucky at gambling, unlucky in love. In other words, you cannot have everything going your way in this life. Well, I think most of us have learnt this already!

Students stay at home due to rain IN THE province of Valencia pupils from more than 20 schools were instructed by the Ministry of Education to stay away from school due to flooding and lack of power throughout the stormy weather at the beginning of the week, affecting classes for more than 8,540 students. Javea was particularly affected. In the province of Castellon primary and secondary students also remained at home due to severe rain flooding entrances and playground areas. Much of the flooding is thought to be the result of poorly maintained premises due to lack of funds.

Watts in a name...
“AN ENGLISHMAN’S (or lady’s) home is his castle,” so quoted Sir Edward Coke many years ago. We know this to be an important concept but it also seems that where it’s situated is even more important. My school chum Martin Page’s mum used to insist By that her family lived in “Hove, actually...”. They didn’t Watts they lived in Brighton. Their house was situated on the eastern side of Dyke Road Avenue which I categorically know and do hereby state was in Brighton. You see, Dyke Road (great name for Brighton street, eh?) was the boundary of Brighton and Hove. The white lines in the middle of the road separate the two towns (or rather did - it’s Brighton & Hove City now, all mashed into one). Anyway, for whatever reason, Martin’s mum thought it preferable to live in Hove rather than Brighton. You might be thinking that she was a snob but I was never under that impression. She just insisted that Hove was where she lived. Maybe it made her happy. When I was eleven my family moved from our house in Carden Hill to a brand new one around the corner in Wilmington Way. Now like Dyke Road, Wilmington Way was a boundary road – on one side was the urbanisation (or as we call it over here estate) of Patcham and on the other side, Hollingbury. Now Hollingbury was a more workaday destination compared to the more gentrified Patcham. I know for sure that we moved from Hollingbury into... er, Hollingbury. But my mum insisted that we had moved into Patcham. Maybe, like Mrs Page, it made her happy. And similarly, I knew a family who lived off the CV70 in Benidorm but insisted they were domiciled in La Nucia. “Oh yes, we are most assuredly in La Nucia,” I can hear the lady of the house chirp. Maybe it made her happy. But does it all matter I ask; what’s in a name? Well plenty evidently. Just recently my urbanisation of Wylde Green here in Sutton Coldfield has been notified of a boundary change and we must shortly consider ourselves to live in Erdington. Shock; horror; outrage! It would appear that: “The Boundary Commission has reviewed constituency boundaries, with the primary aim of ensuring constituencies have equal numbers.” Oh gawd, brace yourselves, people will not be happy. “Among its proposals, it suggests that Sut-
Watts In Britain Paul
Looks like the Dad’s Army titles
ton New Hall Ward (that includes Wylde Green) should be transferred into the Erdington Constituency while Kingstanding would be transferred from Erdington to Sutton Coldfield.” As you can imagine the neighbourhood A-Team galvanised themselves into action and their pamphleteers were out in force popping propaganda through the letterboxes and plastering it on lampposts. “YOU ARE MOVING TO ERDINGTON,” the newsletter shouts, “Your house will not be in Sutton Coldfield; your house prices will be affected; you will vote an Erdington MP; your links to Sutton Coldfield will be history...” And so the list went on. Action plans were outlined and meetings organised. The Boundary Commissioner will be grilled, cross examined and quite possibly pulled around the bounds in an open cart. He may even be severely birched; which wouldn’t entirely be a bad thing. I asked James Arrowsmith of the Wylde Green Neighbourhood Forum why the group opposed the change. He stated: “For a start, we don’t see the benefit of the
proposal. The Boundary Commission’s remit is to ensure that constituencies have similar numbers, around 76,641 voters in each, but the difference between Kingstanding and Sutton New Hall wards is only 355 so there is no real benefit in swapping the two.” James added: “We are also concerned at the effect on local community and local democracy. We think of ourselves as part of Sutton Coldfield, with a stake in its facilities including the town centre, Sutton Park and leisure facilities.” Hmmm but on the plus side James there could be lower council tax and perhaps for us rent payers some reduction of rent. But then I suppose why should some jumped up Boundary Commission factotum, who is probably under some Westminster monkey looking for ways of securing votes, mess up the contentedness of Wylde Green residents? It’s not exactly Big Society is it Dave? No, if people are happy to live in a particular place, why not leave ‘em alone? I’m sure Mrs Page, my mum and the lady on the CV70 would agree. Watts in Sutton Coldfield or is it Erdington...

BACK TO that letter again from the Spanish Tax Authority. Yes, the one I’ve been going on about for the past three weeks. If you haven’t had an opportunity to read this column in the meantime (where have you been?) then here’s a brief summary: THE LETTER The Agencia Triubutaria have been sending out letters to residents and non-residents who have not made a tax declaration since 2007. Last week it was 200,000 now it’s 500,000 according to the latest reports. They are giving people a chance to put any ‘omissions’ in order before an investigation takes place. I’m a non–resident For non-residents it’s relatively straight forward. You must complete your annual tax declaration (due December 31st!) and pay any imputed income tax that you owe on your Spanish property if you don’t rent it out. If you do, the
next rental income payment is due on January 20th.
I’m a resident It becomes more complex when we try to explain the situation for residents. We’ve had several phone calls about this so thought we’d pre-empty the concerns. Many residents are under the impression that they do not need to present an annual tax declaration in June. For some, this will be the case but not for everyone. So, in true Ábaco style, here’s a table for you: Pensioners • Receiving one or more pensions from abroad that total more than 11,200€ a year Early retirees
• With an income through: - interest of more than 1,600€ a year - renting of 1,000€ or more a year
Residents required to complete an annual tax declaration If you’re below these thresholds, lucky you, you’re exempt. However, be aware, we sometimes hear that 22,000€ is the limit. This amount is for people who are employed only by one employer and who are already paying tax as they earn.
Our advice to you If you are a resident and know according to our table that you should be making an annual tax declaration, what are you waiting for? Approach a fiscal representative who deals in your type of tax and they will advise you according to your circumstances what you should do. If you are a resident and according to our table you are exempt but still receive a letter – then our advice is to do nothing. In fact, there is nothing you can do except wait for a follow-up from the Tax Authority at which point you will be able to show that your income is below the amount required. Of course, anyone can make a tax declaration, irrespective of whether they are exempt or not. This can be essential if, at a later date, you want to demonstrate that you have been a fiscal resident for inheritance or capital gains tax purposes. But, it’s not compulsory. There. Hopefully that’s enough to allay needless worries and steer those who should be on a direct route to a fiscal representative towards the door. Who knows, perhaps next week this column might be about something other than THE LETTER. Here’s hoping.

Maintenance for under aged children when couples separate - When should the payments start? by
Carlos Baos
of White & Baos Abogados English & Spanish Solicitors
I HAVE a 4 year old daughter with the man who was my partner until 2 months ago, when we ended our relationship. He has left the home and refuses to cooperate financially with our daughter’s care and expenses. Can I legally claim against him to pay for some of our daughter’s expenses even if we are not married? From when should he pay? Dear reader, Thank you for your query. Yes, you are able to claim against your ex partner towards your and his daughter’s expenses, independent of the fact whether you are married to him or not. You can ask him to contribute towards the costs of food, shelter, clothing, etc for the under aged child (i.e. minor) living with you; this is known as a maintenance payment (pensión de alimentos). You should start the Court procedure laid out in article 748.4 of the Civil Procedures Law (Ley de Enjuiciamiento Civil) which refers to one parent claiming maintenance from the other on behalf of an under aged child. It is the Judge who determines through this procedure, the amount of maintenance to be
paid by the debtor parent (i.e. in this case the father) to the minor, the duration and form of payment and other features. In reference to your question about when should the father start paying the maintenance, we must inform you that not all the Provincial Courts in Spain have followed the same criteria in this matter; however there are 2 main major positions: 1) Some Courts and County Courts (Audiencias Provinciales) have expressed the view that these procedures are comparable to the dissolution of marriage by divorce and therefore should be interpreted according to article 89 of the Spanish Civil Code which states that the Decree (Court Order) will only be in effect from the time when it becomes definite (i.e. beyond appeal) (Sentencia Firme). Therefore these Courts have expressed the view that only when a Court’s Decree exits (i.e. the case is (beyond appeal) should the maintenance be paid, and not during any previous time periods (as long as no provisional or interim economic measures have been requested and approved during the court process). 2) Other Courts and County Courts (Audiencias Provinciales) have expressed the view that the maintenance should be accrued from the time when the claim is filed. These Judges have expressed the view that in these cases Article 142 and subsequent articles of the Spanish Civil Code which appear under the title MAINTENANCE BETWEEN FAMILY should also be applied, especially Article 148 which states that maintenance should be paid from the time the claim is filed. Either way these different interpretations have been clarified
and united by a recent Supreme Court Order (Civil Division Section 1) number 402/2011 of June 14th which has set the following precedent: in those cases of maintenance claim for under aged children due to the separation of a married or unmarried couple the rule contained in Article 148.1 CC must be applied; thus in case of a legal claim for maintenance, it should be paid by the debtor parent from the time of filing the claim. Therefore and in light of the above, it is our opinion that you should claim your daughter’s maintenance from her father by the appropriate legal procedure, requesting from the Court that the father pays this maintenance from the moment the claim was filed. Please remember that it is also possible to request the Court to approve an interim economic measure to be paid during the procedure. It is very important for you to start this legal process against your ex partner without delay if he is continuing to refuse to contribute. Tax Allowances and Concessions In the Valencian Community IF YOU are involved in any legal transaction always be sure to ask your advisers to check to see whether you are entitled to any allowances and reductions from the taxes that may be charged, and apply for them. We have recently helped an expat client save almost €5,000.00 from the Plusvalia tax that would have been charged on a legacy of property, after a local gestor at first refused to believe that they were entitled to any allowance. Plusvalia is the local tax charged on the notional increase over time in the value of “urban”, that is to say developed land. It is charged on the sale or transfer of the property, or when receiving a property as an inheritance or a gift. In the Valencian Community residents are entitled to a reduction of 95% from the full amount of this tax that would otherwise be charged. Plusvalia is charged on the increase in value of Urban land in its own district and is distinct from Capital Gains Tax and is charged on the increase in value of land alone, not on the buildings that may stand on the land. As our client had discovered, the Plusvalia tax that might be charged could be many thousands of Euros. Property adjustments between divorcing spouses also
benefit from an exemption, as do transfers of property into a Company in return for shares in the Company, known as an “aportacion”. If you are tax resident in the Valencian Community or have been resident and on the local “padron” for at least 4 out of the preceding 5 tax years and have inherited property from a spouse who has passed away you may also benefit from a 99% reduction in the inheritance tax that would be charged on the first €420,000.00 of your inheritance. There is a further deduction of €40,000.00 from the taxable legacy for spouses, adult children, and parents who are habitually resident in the Valencian Community. For children under the age of 21 the allowance is increased up to €96,000.00. For those who are registered disabled with the Spanish Social security authorities there is a still further allowance of between €120,000 and €240,000 depending on the official grading of their disability. Even classic cars can benefit from reductions in the annual motor vehicle tax depending on the age of the car, with vehicles more than 50 years old benefiting from a total exemption and between 25 and 50 years old from a reduction of 50%. Of course the vehicles in question must be correctly registered in Spain to
benefit from these reductions. For expats who are not resident in the Valencian Community relief from the heavy burden of Inheritance Tax may be coming soon from the European Court of Justice. On 27th October this year the European Commission issued a press release announcing that they have over decided to refer Spain to the European Union Court of Justice for discriminatory rules on inheritance and gift tax that require non-residents from other European Union countries to pay higher taxes than residents. The European Commission has previously requested the Spanish central and provincial governments to change the law so that non-residents and residents receive equal tax treatment but so far nothing has been done, and so court proceedings have been started against Spain. It is too early to say what the judgement of the Court will be, but this will be a story to watch, whether you are trying to minimize the taxes that your family may have to pay on your passing, or possibly there may be a the chance of reclaiming some tax in the future. If you believe that that you may be able to benefit from tax allowances, or other concessions whether present or future, please contact us at Link Point; It could be one of the most worthwhile calls you ever make.

Beyond the tipping pont - where next? OVER THE last few weeks, have we passed the point of no return down a path which may lead to catastrophe? If this assumption is correct and you agree with this what are the consequences for the expat living in Spain? by
Stephen Ward & Robert Burns Perhaps the tipping point can be pinpointed? Was it the recent statement by Germany and France that Greece had a choice, “accept the austerity measures or leave the Euro”. It was subsequently made clear to the Greeks that the long overdue €8 billion instalment of bailout funds will only be released if the new government and the political parties supporting it confirm in writing the country’s commitments arising from the EU summit decisions of October 26. What we are now seeing is a level of interference in the management of independent sovereign States which surely interferes with the democratic process. Italy remains a huge worry. Italian Government debt amounts to €1.9 trillion. The ECB has made its position clear in that it sees intervention in the bond market as being short-term to
stabilise markets rather than systemic. To accompany all this the so called “bazooka” represented by the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), at the moment resembles little more than a water pistol. It simply does not have the funds, or any commitments to secure sufficient funds, to get anywhere near being able to place a firewall around Greece let alone to deal with Italy. We did not think that it would ever be necessary to consider the consequences of what might happen with a breakup of the Euro. Although the chances of this remain small, the consequences of it, should it occur are such that it would be, in our view, unwise not to have some contingency plans. If we ended up with a “new peseta”, how would it look? One could expect a significant devaluation as compared to the value of the Euro. So the value of assets and liabilities would fall as compared to their value in Euros. From the point of view of the UK expat (bearing in mind that most expats tend to hold most of their cash in pounds sterling, and have their investments denominated in sterling), this could be far from a disaster. So long as it remained possible in the short term to buy sufficient amounts of the new currency then the exchange rate from pounds sterling to
“new pesetas”, ought to be attractive. As this continues to unfold you may want to consider the following as a means of protection. 1. Maintain your cash balances of Euros at a low level, buying Euros as you need them. 2. Keep a sufficient balance of Euros in cash safely at home, to tide you over a month or two, just in case. 3. If you’re able to do so, consider holding a small amount of physical Gold (perhaps in Krugerrands), as if everything were to get really nasty then this would remain an acceptable means of exchange. 4. Transfer your UK pension fund into a QROPS to take advantage of greater investment flexibility. Perhaps it will all come out in the wash, and in the early part of next year we will look back on this particular article and laugh about it. Let’s hope so. The real deal with Moneycorp and RTN Network by Jack Troughton EX-PATS SEE more of their cash by using market leader Moneycorp to move funds to Spain – and qualify for a free ADSL package. The specialist foreign exchange and money services provider, Moneycorp has teamed up with communications expert RTN Network to offer a unique ‘combo deal’ that saves clients 19.99€ a month. To qualify, clients must move a minimum of £1,000 every month via a Moneycorp Regular Payment Plan and have a 3MB ADSL package with RTN Network – normally costing 44.95€ for the bundle but 19.99€ will be credited back on bills. And there is no time limit on the offer so people moving private funds will enjoy making savings month after month – almost 240€ every year. Moneycorp’s Kevin Wright said as with special offers for repatriating money to the UK, the company was also striving to give added value to customers bringing money to Spain. “It makes sense to use RTN Network because we already have first class links with RTN itself. The paper has investigated us and fully recommends us to its readers,” he said.
SERVICE “We are working with three of the bigger and well known telecoms companies who we feel also have the same attitude towards clients as we do at Moneycorp – one of those is RTN Network because of the quality of its customer friendly service. Kevin added: “Times are very tough and it is a matter of seeing what established companies here in Spain can do to help their clients. “Obviously you can give people a voucher or one off discount but we are trying to give on-going value – month in month out.” Trusted in foreign exchange since 1979, Moneycorp traded more than £10.5 billion in currencies last year and is fully regulated and authorised by the Financial Services Authority. He said the minimum £1,000 monthly transfer to qualify for free ADSL could also be achieved by two partners combining funds and sending as one. “But people should be looking to use a Moneycorp Regular Payment Plan anyway because they will still be saving money,” he added. BANK “If a client is moving money from a UK bank to a Spanish bank it is certainly worth looking at
Moneycorp to see if we can offer a better deal.” Kevin said it was important to point out that state pensions sent direct from Newcastle to Spain were already the best deal available. “Newcastle sends it over without charge, at the best rate and it is a fairly efficient service.” But he underlined how a Moneycorp pension payment plan was the most competitive method of bringing monthly payments from a private pension to Spain. “It is very easy to set up and once it is opened, everything is done by telephone. It is also fully automated. Basically, we have a direct debit from the client’s bank account, we do the conversion, and it lands in their Spanish account on the day they request the money arrive,” Kevin explained. “Payment plans are fully flexible and clients are not locked into a fixed term contract – once set up, the client will not have to do anything unless they want to change the amounts being transferred.” And he said there was “no catch” to offer through the special relationship between Moneycorp and RTN Network. “The client keeps making a monthly payment of £1,000 or more and almost 19.99€ will continue to be credited to their RTN Network account.”

The ‘Beckham’ law - Spain’s favourable personal tax regime by
Christina Brady
Regional Manager of Blacktower Costa Blanca
THE “BECKHAM Law” is a Spanish tax law that was passed in June 2005. The law gained its nickname after football player David Beckham became one of the first foreigners to take advantage of it.
Spanish tax residency – Standard rules Standard residency rules state that you are resident in Spain if you are physically present here for more than 183 days during a calendar year (the Spanish tax year). Any foreign worker remaining in the country over 183 days in a tax year is deemed to be “tax resident” which means they were liable for Spanish taxes on their worldwide income, not just their Spanish source income and assets. When determining residency, temporary absences are ignored unless the individual can prove that they are habitually resident in another country. If an individual does not spend 183 days in Spain, the tax authorities can still deem them to be a Spanish tax resident if their centre of economic or personal interests are in Spain. The “Beckham” law In order to help lift this potential tax barrier of liability to worldwide taxation for people relocating to Spain for employment purposes, the Spanish Government introduced amendments to the standard definition of tax residency. An expatriate can apply to be taxed as a non-Spanish resident under the Spanish Non-Resident Income Tax rules, this means they will only be taxed on income they earn in Spain, and not on income they may earn
elsewhere in the world. Under this exemption, the expatriate would be subject to a flat 24% tax rate, rather than the taxation rates applicable to Spanish residents. If taxed as a resident, the expatriate would be subject to a progressive tax scale ranging from 15% to 43% depending on their level of income. • This exemption applies to all foreign workers, although geared more toward wealthier expatriates i.e. middle & upper management and international football players • Foreign workers must apply and be accepted for the tax exemption • The exemption applies in the year of arrival and for the following 5 tax years, for a total of 6 years • Any capital gains obtained in a Spanish territory will be taxed at 35% • Expatriates are subject to the Spanish Net Worth Tax for assets and rights located or exercisable in Spanish territory Conditions: a) The expatriates must be a first time resident to Spain or the individual cannot have been a Spanish tax resident in the 10 years prior to the move to Spain b) The expatriates must have relocated to take up an employment contract in Spain c) Employment duties must be carried out in Spain, although if they must also perform part of their duties outside Spain, the percentage of their income earned from these activities must not exceed 15% d) The application must be made within 6 months of
commencing the employment contract e) The employer must either be a Spanish resident company/entity or if not a Spanish resident then the employer operates through a permanent establishment in Spain f) The employment income received is not deemed to be exempt under the Spanish non resident income tax law g) From the 1st January 2010, income received by the relocated employee cannot exceed €600,000 per annum (this new rule effectively excludes future football players benefiting from this regime who earn over this amount) Why applying for Beckham treatment is not always such a great idea The main reason is that Beckham Law does not come with any personal tax allowances. A higher rate taxpayer of between 28% and 37% can pay less tax being taxed as a resident in Spain because the effect of personal allowances offsets the higher marginal rates of tax. This is mostly true in the first year of residence when the taxpayer might only earn in Spain for several months because, as residents, they get a full year’s worth of allowances to offset against part year’s income. The second is that the worldwide income not taxed in Spain has to be taxed somewhere. Having this taxed in Spain rather than another jurisdiction might be a good thing rather than a bad thing. For example the Spanish tax rate for interest and capital gains (19-21%) is among the lowest in major European countries.
To find out more about the Beckham Law or for any financial advice, please contact Christina on 0034 658 892 330 or 965 065 265 or simply email her at christina.brady@blacktowerfm.com The information contained in this article does not constitute financial advice and you should seek advice from a professional tax adviser before embarking on any financial planning activity.

Taking care of your car: Pothole damage POTHOLES ARE quite common on the roads of southern Spain and now that the rainy season has arrived more are sure to pop up. Although drivers do their best to carefully avoid them, few realise how damaging these holes, or pits in the surface of a road, can actually be. Not only can they cause flat tyres, they can severely damage the steering control system of a vehicle. SIGNS OF DAMAGE If your car does go over a rough pothole or bump it is recommended that you check your tyres, as damage is not always obvious. Drivers should take the time to carefully inspect both rims and tyres. Potholes could cause bulging in the tyre wall, due to sudden jolts at the time of impact. If you notice a bulge, change the tyre immediately as it is likely to lead to a blow-out which could be disastrous if you’re travelling at a high speed. Also, modern cars usually come equipped with aluminum-based rims so cannot withstand as much pothole damage as older steel rims. Other important car parts to examine for damage are the shock absorbers or struts of the car. Shocks and struts control how
vehicles move and respond. They act as a cushion to reduce the rebound action of the springs of a car. These springs absorb road irregularities. Without them, the vehicle would continually bounce down the road, making it extremely difficult to manage. Shocks and struts also control the movement of the springs and suspension to keep the tyres in contact with the road. This affects steering, stability and braking. A broken shock or strut could alter the direction of the vehicle and make it difficult to handle. It is important to be aware of the signs that the shock absorbers or struts for your car may need to be replaced. These are a few things to look out for: • The car tilts or wobbles when turning • The front of the vehicle becomes stuck after braking • The rear of the car leans backward when accelerating • The vehicle bounces or slides sideways on winding roads • The car is lower in the front or rear
• The car leaks or displays signs of physical damage such as rust or dents • There is loss of steering control in sudden stops If you notice any of the above, do not wait to have your car inspected. Even if your car passes the check up with flying colours, good preventive maintenance can help crucial parts last longer. CLAIMING COMPENSATION The problem many drivers face with pothole damage is receiving reimbursement for repairs. Some pothole damages can be claimed through your insurance company as most will recognise an immediate claim, but pothole damage is usually cumulative.
Claiming compensation from the local council might be a better way of recovering cash for repairs. Some local governments assume responsibility for pothole damage caused on their streets, but many do not. Before making a claim, be sure your local council accepts them. If you do make an insurance claim and subsequently decided to make a claim from local council, tell your insurer who might be willing to help you through the process. If you would like expert, independent advice, tailored to your particular circumstances and to receive competitive car insurance prices speak to your local Knight Insurance Broker. Osteoarthritis by
Joan McLellan
M.C.S.P S.R.P Grad Dip
THIS CONDITION is probably the most commonly treated condition in Physiotherapy due to the fact it affects so many joints of the body. It is often regarded as a progressive process associated with getting older. However, there is little evidence to support an aging or wear and tear phenomenon. Instead, it is the result of abnormal mechanical, inflammatory or metabolic factors. There is never a set pattern with arthritis due to the varied factors affecting joints, and it can progress rapidly, or over many years with the symptoms coming and going. There are two obvious processes happening when someone develops arthritis: the first is the destruction of the articular cartilage and due to the wearing away of this the bones come into contact with each other causing the grinding noise that is often felt or even heard. The edge of the joint forms excess bone like a spur and these are called oesteophytes which lead to reduction in movement depending on the joint. X-rays show the changes in the joints but only when the disease is quite advanced. Thus we tend to see it more in the elderly as previously aches pains and stiffness over the years are ignored
as results of too much work, or too little work, as the case may be. SYMPTOMS Pain This is usually related to the joint involved, though in the case of the hip the pain is often referred to the knee. Stiffness A sure sign of OA is stiffness after rest, even after short periods of sitting in a chair. So often I hear “It takes me a while to get going - then I’m fine.” Deformity This is commonly seen in the hands in the finger joints just below the nails. Bony growths at the sides of the joint are known as heberden’s nodes, and they can be very painful but once the process burns out they are more likely to be a nuisance through stiffness. The signs of OA depend to a certain extent on the location. In easily accessible joints a bony thickness sometimes with tenderness may be evident. Oseoarthritis doesn’t attack all of the joints of your body at one time. There will be varying degrees and distribution of degeneration present. Management depends on where the main problem is, and effective treatment by a physiotherapist will be achieved by recording the patient’s history, present condition, and needs. The main concerns will be to manage the pain,
Bony growths at the sides of the joint are known as heberden’s nodes
and to cope with the loss of function, and the stiffness. Symptoms and methods of treatment for all the individual joints vary too much to generalise in this article so I will deal with them in separate issues. Each patient will have their own specific problems so the physiotherapist must cater individually for their relief. PHYSIOTHERAPY Once the patient’s problem has been identified, treatment is directed towards improving function within the limits imposed by the state of the affected joints and the requirements of the patient’s lifestyle. As always with Physiotherapy, successful management rests upon the cooperation and understanding of the patient.
AIMS OF TREATMENT To control the pain, prevent further strain or damage to affected joints, to improve the movement of the joint, to improve the muscle power and to maintain or improve functional independence. TREATMENT Pain relief will be given using heat, ultrasound, interferential, alongside medication. Instruction in postural improvement will be given, detailing suitable positions for adequate rest. A program of graded exercises may be discussed, and use of appropriate piece of equipment such as walking aids. Dietary advice is important too. These will all contribute to an easier way of life.
This article has been written by Joan McLellan a physiotherapist since 1974. Joan has surgeries at the L’Ancora Tennis Club in Javea, at the Clinica Britannia in Calpe, and at the Family Medical Centre in Albir, and she will also do home visits whenever necessary. Boost your immune system
by
Dr Aleks Bjargo
The Costa Blanca Chiropractic Centre
IT’S FLU season and many people are afraid of being affected since the symptoms are stronger and more prolonged every time. Medical offices are offering vaccines but recent studies show that they aren’t very effective. The viruses mutate and change their appearance much faster than the pharmaceutical industry is able to keep up with. Prevention is the best policy and we are happy to inform you that the Chiropractic Centre has expanded with a health food shop. Here we can offer the natural approach that we at Costa Blanca Chiropractic Centre suggest to our patients. First, I suggest you boost your immune system with supplemental anti-oxidants such as Vitamin D, Vitamin C and Zinc. Herbal remedies containing Echinacea, Golden Seal, and Ginseng can be supportive also. And the good old garlic and ginger both have antiviral compounds. Ginger is considered the best home remedy for colds in both ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. Drink a cup of ginger tea at least 3 times a day. To make a tea, add 1 heaped teaspoon of grated fresh ginger root to 1 cup of boiled water and allow it to steep for 10 minutes.
Add some honey or agave syrup if you wish. What you eliminate from your diet is as important as what you add when it comes to boosting your immune system. Minimize caffeine, sugar and dense carbohydrates such as rice, potatoes, pasta and bread, and most importantly eliminate dairy products that cause mucous formation. Identify any stress in your life that lowers the immune system drastically. Find a safe outlet to break up your stress and laugh a lot – it will work wonders. Chiropractic is an outstanding method of assisting the immune system. Chiropractors help balance the nervous system, which controls the immune system. When patients tell us at Costa Blanca Chiropractic Centre they can´t make it in to our office due to having the flu we encourage them to get in – especially on those days to help them heal more efficiently. The patients that do are very grateful.
For an appointment with Dr Aleks, please contact The Costa Blanca Chiropractic Centre on 966 865 432.

for Christmas CHARITY WORK often goes unseen and unheard, but at this time of the year charities’ needs come to the fore because of the great importance of this festive season. None more so than the EMAUS charity organisation which raises money for disadvantaged and homeless children right here on the Costa Blanca. You will likely be aware of EMAUS already. However their activities are certainly worth reading about again because you can’t help but be impressed by the scope of the activities carried out. The charity runs nine children’s shelters, occupational workshops for teenage children, a counselling service for families with problematic children, and a shelter for battered wives. On top of all of this, in November 2008 EMAUS also opened a new baby shelter for newborns up to six year olds, which specialises in working with Generalitat’s adoption scheme. Even more, one of the shelters in Relleu is for disabled children, where there are 24 children. And if all this wasn’t enough, as well as the children’s shelters they run two residencias for the third age, and an emergency help-line in Altea for the elderly living on their own. The children’s shelters have nearly 90 children living in them at the moment, and behind all this activity are many unpaid volunteers who give money, time, devotion and love throughout the year. Lucy and Tony
who run The Bed Centre on the Moraira to Calpe road are two such people, with Tony spending a great deal of time working directly at the EMAUS children’s homes. In fact rather than become embroiled in the formal charitable world, he prefers to devote his time working directly on the premises themselves, decorating and refurbishing, and helping others run fundraisers. Many organisations collect money for EMAUS, notably the well known ‘Friends of The Children of EMAUS’ and all funds and all efforts are very gratefully appreciated indeed. One main event though, happening right now that RTN readers can assist with, is The Bed Centre’s own Christmas Bag collection. This is now in its forth year, and it has been heartening for the children’s carers to see the obvious delight with which the Gift Bags have been received by the children. Simple items like colouring pens and pencils, or personal items for 8 to 16 year olds such as tooth brushes and toothpaste, deodorant, shampoos, other hygiene products, socks, underwear, slippers, cards or games or any unwanted presents that you have been holding on to will be very gratefully received. Many of these presents consist of everyday things that we would probably take for granted, yet they have proven to be such a welcome bonus for the children themselves. Montse, the president of EMAUS has also asked for some items for the older residents

like an unwanted scarf, perfume or jewellery and of course the baby unit is always in need of nappies and babies milk. EMAUS does its best, but buying these items for the nearly 90 children must come behind paying the electricity and water bills.
Pictured are the gifts and items donated into the shop so far this year. More items are desperately needed please. Lucy is arranging drop off points or please come and call in and leave them at The Bed Centre. You can contact her on 96 583 6814.

The importance of continuity of care by
Amanda Collins Dip HE
Family Medical Centre, Albir
FOLLOWING THE closure of The English Medical Clinic in Albir, long standing patient Mr. Howard Benedict felt somewhat bereft, having been used to the luxury of medical care, delivered in English. With no other English clinic in the area that he knew of, and with Mr. Benedict having a SIP card, he decided to try the Spanish medical social care system. The first ‘problem’ he encountered was the frustration of having to wait for a G.P appointment. Whilst emergencies were dealt with swiftly, Mr. Benedict soon realised that for routine G.P consultations you have to wait for the next available appointment which may be a week away! Eventually, Mr. Benedict was given his first appointment but unfortunately because his Spanish is so limited, the doctor was understandably reluctant to see him. Therefore, another appointment had to be scheduled and Mr. Benedict had to source an interpreter. Having found an interpreter and re-scheduled his appointment, Mr. Benedict finally managed to see the G.P. Whilst he felt the medical care was satisfactory (albeit his consultation barely lasted 5 minutes) he quickly realised that it was extremely frustrating and difficult having to discuss private medical issues via an interpreter. Basically, Mr. Benedict was at a loss of where to go
Patient Mr. Howard Benedict discussing his case with Practice Nurse Amanda Collins
to continue his medical care. He was therefore delighted to hear of the opening of the English speaking Family Medical Centre, situated in the heart of Albir. He was even more pleased to discover that to see the G.P would cost him a mere 38€ - less than he’d paid for an interpreter!
Mr. Benedict says ‘I cannot tell you how pleased I am that the Family Medical Centre has opened. I now have peace of mind that all the services of the medical centre are available for myself and my family to use – all in English and all the services are very reasonably priced. What a find!’
In order to assist previous patients of Dr. Colin Evans of the English Medical Clinic, the Family Medical Centre have a limited supply of forms to assist patients in claiming their previous medical records.

Introducing the cast of
Yes! Cinderella’s carriage is getting ready to ride into Ondara to deliver everyone’s favourite pantomime. Enter the entrancing happy-ever-after-land of a fairytale princess as Cinderella arrives at Ondara Auditorium on 18th and 19th December with loveable Buttons, two ugly sisters, one handsome prince and a Fairy Godmother too! With a little help, Cinderella will go to the Ball. So don your glad rags, order your pumpkin and search for some white mice as we join Buttons and the talented cast in a fairytale telling of this heartwarming story of a girl and her mysterious slipper. With lavish sets, wonderful costumes and great contemporary songs throughout, Cinderella is the only way to start your Christmas season. The cast Adam King has been in the entertainment industry for 30 years as a professional singer and promoter, and is a well known local celebrity on the Costa Blanca, delighting audiences with his special swing style singing. Adam’s truly loveable portrayal of Buttons will warm the hearts of young and old. Lucy Glister trained professionally in musical theatre and worked for many years as a vocalist and dancer as well as professional show producer for a number of well known hotel chains and cruise ships around the world. As well as being a founder member of Big Fish Entertainment, Lucy works alongside her sister Emma as directors of
Cinderlla The Ugly Sisters
The Stage School in Javea. Lucy is the choreographer for Cinderella and will “charm” the audience as the Prince. Emma Devine gained a good grounding within the entertainment industry touring nationally in repertory theatre and in working in a variety of pantomimes, stage shows and television programmes. Emma will delight audiences with her performance as Dandini, Prince Charming’s endearing side kick! Louise Dearden trained in Cambridge as a teacher of English as a foreign language, specialising in the use of drama and has been a teacher-trainer and oral examiner for the University of Cambridge Examinations Board both in Greece and Spain. She recently wowed audiences with her portrayal of Mrs. Johnstone in Blood Brothers and will certainly play a very different role as one of The Ugly sisters. Suzanne Millington trained professionally as a classical actor before becoming a specialist in theatre in education. She has a wealth of experience in all styles of theatre and music and is well known for her work with children in this area and for introducing dinner theatre to
the coast with her much acclaimed one woman show, Shirley Valentine. Suzanne thoroughly enjoys comedy and is sure to put a smile on faces with her outrageous Ugly sister. Of course no pantomime would be possible without a wonderful supporting cast and chorus, We have Paul Devenish from Aquasports Javea playing the role of Baron Hardup, and Joseph Altamira as The Chamberlain, Crystal Goudie as Cinderella and Claire Hascirci as the Fairy God Mother and with added vocal energy form The Big Fish Rock Choir! Look out for chances to win a wonderful character dinner at Restaurant El Paraiso in Parcent. Whilst enjoying a fabulous 4 course menu, diners will interact with the characters from the show and maybe have a sneak preview of some of the show stopping numbers. Tickets for Cinderella can be booked by calling the box office 662 525 628 or by visiting the website www.bigfishentertainment.biz but hurry… with just 3 performances early booking is advisable. with aunty virus Printer installation Norman from La Marina asks: OUR LEXMARK Z53 printer is now a discontinued model and worked okay with our old PC and Word 2010, and we had no problems installing it with the Lexmark CD provided. Now we have updated to a modern HP Pavilion laptop with Win7 but we are unable to get the printer installed plus the laptop won’t even read the Lexmark CD! The internet café we use have told us it should be possible to find a website with the correct printer drivers and obtain it for free, but so far after 3 attempts we still cannot find a free one.
Emails through Hotmail Bet via email asks: HI AUNTY. I wonder if you can help me? I access my emails through hotmail and over the last few days I have been unable to reply or forward any of them. When I try I get directed to a new email page and also when I try to get a list of contacts through To: nothing happens. I accessed my hotmail account through a neighbours computer and everything worked OK, so what am I doing wrong? I have even done a system restore to a date when I know it was OK but it made no difference. Aunty Says: I am getting that many emails regarding Hotmail and Windows Live problems that I’m thinking Microsoft have some serious problems with their email programs. Some of the solutions that have worked have been to update Java from www.oracle.com and check your computer for spyware and virus. Make sure you are using the very latest version of your browser and even change to a different one for testing purposes. Running Ccleaner from www.download.com sometimes helps, but apart from that you may want to consider changing to Gmail or Yahoomail.

The instances you may find a low upload speed to be a problem would be if you were transferring large amounts of pictures or when you are using a webcam during Skype or MSN.

GADGET INSPECTOR
Gadget Inspector investigates the case of:
Wine Winners THIS WEEK the Inspector keeps up the theme of gadgets to help keep out the cold this winter – well, most people certainly feel the warming benefits of a few glasses of wine! Top left is the €80 Intelligent Wine Cooler & Warmer. Apparently each type of wine has an optimal serving temperature. Do you know your Chablis from Chardonnay, or Merlot from Shiraz? Well no need to worry any longer, the Intelligent Wine Cooler and warmer will do it for you. Just put in the bottle, select the wine type and it does the rest. The Intelligent Wine Cooler & Warmer contains automated programmes for thirty different wine types, and you can also create your own custom one – if you like your Sauvignon Blanc a little cooler for example. It also has a handy bottle opener and insulating collar to speed up the process and is fitted with a mains plug. Cheers! Top right is the €35 Automatic Wine Preserver – assuming you ever have anything left in the bottle at the end of the night. Place this little lifesaver on the top of an opened bottle, press the button and the mini pump will extract 75% of the oxygen, keeping it in tip top condition for up to seven days. It also has an integrated temperature gauge for those who just have to have their Chablis just right dahling. Slainte!
Moving on (assuming you can still move at this point), bottom left is the €25 Magic Wine Chain: this wine bottle holder could well have been designed by the Magic Circle and will have you scratching your head in dis-belief. The Magic Wine Chain is a nickel-plated iron chain that has been ingeniously welded to form a perfectly balanced wine holder. It just doesn’t look like it should work, but put in a bottle of wine and voila! You’ll like this. Not a lot, but you’ll like it. Last orders are for the €20 Decantus Wine Aerating Pourer. A vital part of drinking a decent red is allowing the wine to breathe once opened. Most red wines benefit from breathing for at least an hour – but who can wait that long? The Decantus has been designed so that simply by pouring wine straight through it you are effectively giving your wine an hour’s worth of aeration. The Decantus boasts longer aeration tubes which produce finer bubbles than other aerators, ensuring a far smoother finish. Prost! (the German drinking salutation – not the French racing driver). The Inspector´s Verdict: Definitely no good if you´re teetotal – but there´s something here for everyone else who enjoys a little splash (or a swimming pool full…) of the Spanish vino. As they say, enjoy in moderation and don´t drink and drive. Salud!

Word Ladders The key rule is that you must only change one letter at a time as you move from one rung to another, and the word you make must be a proper word! Therefore you may move from BATH --> BATS but not from BATH --> CASH because that changes two letters in one go which is not allowed.

Mother Nature NOTHING CLEARS the air more than a walk. Gentle exercise it may be for the body, but it charges too the mind and brings us energy and contentment. To be anywhere in nature is a wonderful grounding for us spiritual souls. Nature is highly psychic and it can be highly destructive too. Like a set of scales Nature can be weighed in the balance of the scientific and the aesthetic, as beauty and survival bring actions into play to bring us the balance of the natural beauty of the World. Those wonderful shades of green are a wonder and a treasure. Where beauty lives and abounds, so does love and sympathy, understanding and tolerance. Plants grow to the very best of their abilities. Needing light, or shade, water and sunlight they have a wonderful way of making their own food to sustain and nourish themselves. The poison that may grow in the berry of the wood will be closely covered by the resolve, the antidote. I remember just how soothing the dock leaf was when the stinging nettle did what nettles will do at the first opportunity. I tasted hawthorn leaves as bread and butter, smelled rose hips, picked blackberries, as a child. I played with conkers, and always brought something back for school for the nature table. The treasures of Mother Nature are for free, yet many will never wish to experience them, or appreciate their beauty and style, their resilience and their bloom, when the time comes. Spirit is also free. It is on offer always to us, but some will never appreciate the wonderful job that it does to enhance and to enrich our lives. Spirit helps us to grow in the knowledge of our own individual and highly prized progress in life. We ourselves can make so much out of what we have and we can pass to others all our love and respect, as we walk though life and experience that which we wish to share. Like the resilient plant we never give up on the nature of our love and respect for the unseen and unknown that we have come to love and trust. We may also be stung, but that only helps us to better see a solution that will remove the pain and produce a salve which will never leave our side no matter how

needy and deserving that we are. We grow in Spirit too to the very best of our abilities all along the way. There may be a blooming period of our life and others will pick those skills that we have nurtured and cherished, all will be well, and all will come into focus as we live our life the spiritual way. Plants can put on such a show! The colours of the palette of Mother Nature can and do take our breath away. The well sculptured garden is a joy to behold! When finding myself in Central London with an enormous garden to take care of I panicked and had to work really hard to lay turves and plant shrubs and water and feed and prune and pick. I prepared the very worst herbaceous border you could wish for. The first summer the small plants flourished at the back and the larger shrubs thrived in the front and it was a hopeless mixture of plants hidden from view. However the next year they seemed to have worked it out for themselves and all came right! This time of the year we have Autumnal walks to enjoy, with the odd orange to steal on the way. Beautiful mountains, and strong, mighty sunsets to illuminate them. Close by to my home eagles fly and a scattering of feathers are left behind, as a treasure. Spirit and Nature are often as one. We will always get that good grounding by appreciating what we have, especially as the blue skies illuminate the wonderful Spanish World we inhabit. The Sun, bringer of energy and gamma rays, bathes us in the energy of light and love, that go straight to the soul of those of us who care to receive such beauty. Mother Nature has been kind in her fabrication of the Costa Blanca. When the mountains are dusted with a light snow on their peaks and the cloudless sky is cerulean, this is a time to see the beauty of our lives reflected in the spiritual energy that allows this utter perception of natural talent in the freedom and the artistry of the magic of our time and appreciation. Kissed by the sun, we sometimes don’t know how lucky we really are.
Love & Light... Kenny Corris
postbag Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com Kenny, I have a spirit dog around me. I am a dog lover, and it is one of my babies from the past who won’t let go. Sometimes when my present dog barks I can hear my Jasper joining in, to protect me. Annie. Dogs are very spiritually demonstrative and often come through to support and show their love and affection to their owners. I think dogs especially have specific and special feelings, often coming through in readings and sittings to show that they have made their transition, and have crossed the animal rainbow bridge. Forget anyone who thinks that animals do not have souls. Could any animal be your best friend, love you with a very special love and devotion, and not open their heart and soul to their Earthly owners? Cats rarely enter into the Spirit World, they are more concerned with living all nine of their lives and they go for reincarnation as an alternative, very often. There is always a mystery surrounding our feline friends, since on their last life they disappear to die only to be reborn somewhere, by choice, sometimes as a crazy kitten.

Feeling freshened by the recent actions of the Partial Solar Eclipse, and the New Moon there is a need to look for pastures new, with a view to making a fresh start in something. You are so capable of weighing up the situation you now face, but to turn it around the way that you will takes some doing; and puts you where you should be, in control and ready to rock and roll your way to success. Ever connective energies of Jupiter really do stand by you, and help you especially to see what can be, rewarding your salient efforts and in particular renovating your skills and talents. You ask for nothing, and your pride and charm will undoubtedly see you through when the time is right. Listen and learn, remove that stubborn energy, you sometimes hide inside, and just be your wonderful self! Time to designate work to someone else as delegation is on the cards and you can no longer take on the pressure. This serves to help all around as you prepare yourself for working on new levels, opening doors successfully on the way. The determination and professionalism has paid off, and there is nothing you need worry about as a new process enters and you know that it makes sense. The New Moon has grabbed your attention. You are at a time when you can let much of what is going on pass you by as you move to a new stage with your inner self. Emotions lately have been a sore point, and you must know that there is no easy way down, except to look at what you are doing and realise with pride your achievements and progress. Things are about to get a lot easier! Watch finances because something turns up that you haven’t budgeted for. A corner develops with Uranus that asks you to review anything financial, so check spending and take sound advice about any investments or pensions. You will, undoubtedly, survive economically but there is a need to make some subtle adjustments that serve to both boost your income and minimalise your expenditure. Romance is on the way as Aries makes a cosmic move on your space, and time appears to be flying by. Know that your own happiness is everything, and this is not selfish, it’s very much self preserving. Your decision will affect others, but they have to know that this is something that has to happen, and that you have to think of yourself, for once, and what it is you really want to do! Where is that calm, peace and balance when you need it? What’s on the agenda right now is a set of changes that are to bring depth to your life and those who depend on you. You have been conservational and have kept hope in your heart for long enough. What is on offer is to have a chance to make a difference to many, use your great skills, and to move onwards and upwards. Why wait any longer? Great negative and great positive combine in your second house and this has the effect of a stalemate on something. Remove the pressure immediately, and take time, stall if you have to, to make sure of your innermost wishes and desires. There are options and you should examine what your priorities are now, because they have changed, but then, so have you! Make your wishes known. With Mercury now en route you can stop concern and let bygones be bygones. Accept that things may never change and that you have done whatever you could. This is not accepting defeat, it is trying to work with somebody who makes things intentionally difficult for themselves, and this has a direct bearing on you. Think of you and your needs, a leopard cannot change his spots! Venus brings love and romance straight to your door. Have more confidence in yourself because you sometimes do not seem to realise what tremendous energy you have to make this relationship work. Your sensitivity and care are part of a process brought to a head by the Goddess of Love this week. She knows what has to happen, so eliminate fear, the answer will be yes, but you have to ask first! Uranus hits on a warring Mars bringing some conflict on the domestic front. Know that there are no sides to be taken, and that resolve and changes are often made in anger, only to be long forgotten when things are really for the best. Tell it like it is, because more support should come to help all of you, and that means someone pulling their weight, whether they like it or not! Chiron is in cahoots to see you through the initial stages of the new instruction, and to reinforce that you are the very best person to take on the job in hand. It’s amazing the support and the love that you can inspire from those who love you, so why worry what others have to say? If they cannot see you for what you are then they do not really know you. And maybe they have different, lesser, values.
If it’s your birthday this week... Expect that the help you need is closer than you think, and that this astrological year is going to be geared towards your own personal development. Time will tell, but know that you are working on all the right levels and that your reward is what you dare to ask for!

Whereas many other companies have long since packed up, Silverdale Couriers are still going strong. All the work is carried out by Silverdale from start to finish and no goods come off the vehicle until they reach their destination. This way there is no chance of goods being lost or damaged. They also transport cars and motorbikes door to door. In all the years that Silverdale has been trading there has never been a claim in any way made against the company; and there are not a lot of companies that can say that! They carry a full International Operators Licence to cover Europe which allows them to pass freely through the UK ports. Vehicles that do not hold this licence and are 7.5 tons and over, take the risk of being stopped by the authorities and the vehicle being impounded when entering the UK ports. As a customer this is something very important to consider when choosing a company to carry out a removal. Silverdale covers all of Spain, the UK and Europe and from collection to delivery all goods can be delivered within seven to ten days sometimes even sooner. Their vehicles are fitted with air suspensions, giving a smoother ride for goods over the continent. So when moving to Spain, or to the UK, why go to the expense

Some last gardening jobs for November by
Clodagh & Dick Handscombe Practical gardeners and authors
GARDENS CONTINUE to be full of colour and we hope this continues for another four weeks through to Christmas. So it is a joy to be out in the garden relaxing and doing seasonal jobs. If you are not too sure of what needs doing now re-read the seasonal job calendars towards the back of each of our books. For those that don’t have the books the following is an extract of some of the things to do now: IN THE FLOWER GARDEN Plant some more spring bulbs – there are some good offers around at present Prune rose bushes to stimulate flowers at Christmas Check ties on trees and shrubs Give tree support posts an extra knock to tighten them up after recent rains Purchase just-in-bud flowering plants for Christmas. (If you buy them in full flower the main flowering could be over by Christmas) In areas that have frosts wrap the most delicate plants in fleece or bubble wrap
THE FRUIT TREES Harvest olives for pickling or the production of olive oil. To process your olives separate from others normally requires 200 kilos of olives which will yield about 40 litres of olive oil Plant new soft fruit bushes: mulch those already planted with the last of your comfrey plant leaves Prune red and black currant bushes Fix grease bands around the trunks of fruit trees Sweep up leaves and fallen fruit and mix into compost heap –but not citrus fruits! Plant deciduous fruit trees IN THE VEGETABLE GARDEN Build compost bins Cut back asparagus plants and mulch with horse of goat manure and seaweed Harvest the last butter beans and paella beans and start to harvest Swiss chard and fennel Sow a second batch of peas and broad beans Plant out a last batch of onion plantlets Scatter well-rotted manures over unused areas to prepare for spring plantings IN THE HERB GARDEN Harvest and dry culinary and medicinal herbs for winter infusions, especially annual varieties Take cuttings of perennial herbs to propagate new plants Cover stevia plant with a couple of layers of fleece or move into a green house
Cut back marjoram and mint plants Ensure containers of herbs do not become waterlogged by winter rains Trim herb bushes to shape
Plant winter flowering plants in window boxes
ON YOUR APARTMENT BALCONIES TERRACES AND WINDOWSILLS Cut back watering now that the weather cools Sprinkle ecological snail bait on surface of compost in containers and on ground between containers Loosen surface of soil/compost mixes in containers Plant fruit trees in containers Plant winter flowering plants in window boxes and other containers Plant some final vegetable plantlets in containers. ‘Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style’ illustrates a wide variety of containers planted with vegetables. There are other things to do but the above will be a good start… If you are starting a new garden do plan it out and improve the soil in intended plant and tree areas before planting anything. A wise investment is to buy a 5 kilo tub of TerraCottem soil improvement gel, which among other benefits can reduce watering needs by 50 to 70%. This product is best purchased direct from TerraVida. Check their website. It is in several languages including English. Also look out for Nuedorffs

SWIMMING POOL LEAK DETECTION Call Dyna Pool, the Costa Blanca’s premier Leak Specialists and save time, money, and unnecessary property damage. Using state-of-the-art equipment and methodology, they find and fix all kinds of concealed leaks. An unrepaired leak could mean real trouble to a pool owner. For example a 1mm hole would release up to 350 gallons of water per day. Not only is this wasting a precious resource it could prove to be very costly. More importantly, the water has to go somewhere and this can inevitably lead to structural damage caused not only to the pool shell itself but to surrounding foundations and footings to buildings. YOU MAY HAVE A LEAK IF: • Pool has air in the system
• Equipment loses prime • Cracks appear • Pool surround is sinking or lifting • There are wet patches around the pool • Water needs to be added more than once a week HAVING SAID THAT, DON’T PANIC, WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING LEAK DETECTION SERVICES: Initial site visit to carry out a full diagnostic test of the pool plant equipment. Full pressure test and CCTV test using cameras to provide a full picture of the offending pipe work of your pool and report on all associated pool pipe work. On location of the leak we will submit our quote for the repair should you require us to do so. And Dyna Pool also offers a full range of other pool services including the repair and replacement of: Skimmers

Concert
Is there something wrong with English Beer? IT HAS to be said that there is nothing like a good pint of English beer. Unfortunately what I have had recently has been nothing like a good pint of beer. I was once genuinely amazed to be presented with my first award for the quality of my beer. I said that I had to admit that I didn’t actually make it myself but bought it from the local Brewery; all I did was to connect it to the pumps and dispense it when asked by the customer to do so. “But so many people get it wrong,” I was told. “So,” I said, “I’m getting an award for not mucking up someone else’s beer that I don’t make: more a case of not doing it wrong instead of doing it right.” “So,” He said “Do you want this bloody award or not?” Hard to turn down a man with such a wonderful way with words! In Mexico your beer is protected with a slice of lime stuffed in the bottle neck to stop the wasps from nicking it or surprising you with a sting when you take a swig, although some still think it’s a fashionable thing to do. In Spain we have fresh Tapas and the very confusing, for many, Pintxos and Pinchos which although sound similar to us are in fact very different in what they are. On a recent excursion to Valencia market with some promised Pintxos for lunch concerns were raised when the group thought they were getting Pinchos. In an effort to clarify briefly Pintxos are traditional of the Basque country where in Cider houses and taverns they are served as small bite-sized foods to counter the effects of alcohol: they are served on
bread with a tooth pick through them, then you pay by counting the discarded tooth picks. Restaurants and bars all over Spain now serve freshly made, very attractive all on display, hot and cold, both sweet and savoury selections. Pinchos on the other hand are any food that can be skewered on a cocktail stick, but with this spelling it is more commonly known as a small kebab or a skewered meat. In Morocco they are more commonly made with lamb although in Spain we lean towards more pork; there is even a ready made spice readily available throughout Spain called ‘Especias para Pinchitos’. But in the UK, instead of protecting our beer with freshly made yummy goodies as above, we accompany our drinks with bits of plastic barely filled with, let’s be honest pretty meagre offerings (I wonder why Spanish bar snacks don’t come wrapped in plastic). We used to serve Oysters and baskets of monkey nuts, still in the shell; I still think that cracking them yourself is very therapeutic after a long day at work. Those who complained were subjected to my presentation of: “So let me get this straight, you want me, currently very busy, to find the time to peel your peanuts for you and then for your convenience put them in a plastic bag for you so that you can eat them? That’s two lots of packaging for one snack.” Who remembers Scampi Fries, Hula Hoops and Bacon ‘Flavoured’ snacks which were amazingly suitable for vegetarians even though the salt and
vinegar crisps were not, all again, wrapped in plastic? Were these snacks specifically designed to complement or protect our precious beer, or were they just meant to be a distraction so that we wouldn’t notice the cloudy warm and pricey pint the landlord was currently offering?

THE FIRST time I saw Danny was with the Brink Band, and he was amazing for a fourteen year old and since then I have seen Danny with two bands, S.F.M and The Shy. Danny has now grown in confidence and can play comfortably with the rest, regardless. In two years his own guitar style has emerged and out of the shy kid has popped a seasoned front man ready to take on the big bad world of Rock! Danny´s solo set will run through five decades, from 60’s Hendrix to, 2005´s, Scouting for Girls. Danny’s Mystique set’s will have a strong acoustic slant, showing another side of this guy. His new band, The Hoax, are coming soon to Mystique, as soon he signs the contract!! SEE TOMORROW´S STAR TODAY!!!

SO MUCH has been said about the latest boy band on the block One Direction, and it’s mostly about how they are going to be the next big thing. But the squeaky clean image that generally goes hand in glove with such a claim has, out of nowhere, suddenly taken a severe blow to the breadbasket … or has it? … Let me explain. Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson are both band members and also share a flat in central London. Last week Louis told the Sun newspaper “the worst thing about living with Harry is the constant stream of women he´s getting through the door … its relentless!” Alright!! … Nice one Louis, but a bit tell taley at the same time I have to say mate. But it doesn’t stop there as we then find out a wee bit more about Louis and his new girlfriend Eleanor Calder in the interview with the Sun when he said “I´m a one woman man with Eleanor … blah blah blah” … could it be its Louis´s new chica Eleanor who is the one who disapproves of Harry´s womanising, as I´ve never heard of a guy having a problem with another guy on such a thing. One things for sure, and that’s that the queue at Harry’s door will now be a lot longer, and if the promo team are smart One Direction truly will become the next big thing.
Flat but not Broke
Material Girl to Material Woman MADONNA, LIKE so many other folks, male and female from the world of Pop, is just about to launch a new fashion line and is calling it ´Truth or Dare’ by Madonna. The name comes from her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour which was turned into a documentary for US television, and as the then ´first lady of pop´ used the expression ´Truth or Dare’ rather a lot for the cameras during the filming, it kinda stuck from there. Apparently the line will go global early next year beginning with footwear … ooh lovely … then handbags … um … then intimates … what people in prison? … ah sorry … that´ll be underwear and stuff … and then fragrances … that’s perfumes, I know that. Although I´m having a bit of fun with this story, I really do seriously hope Madonna goes for this new venture in a big way, as in my opinion she should have stopped making music 7 or 8 years ago and not kept releasing videos that showed her strutting about like a 20 year old. Last
year she was voted down in ninth place in a poll to find the Diva Growing Old Most Gracefully, which I am pleased to tell you was won by the lovely Kylie Minogue. At 53 our Madge could well have finally hung up her microphone for a coat hanger.
AND SO I bring to you the ´Headline of the Week!” … and I would like you all to brace yourselves as it could well impact on you quite severely. Deep breaths everyone … “Jedward Flatten Their Hair!” … that’s it … just keep breathing nice and steady … yes my lovelies Jedward have only gone and flattened their hair, but thank the lord for the British press who have kept us up to speed with things in the ´We can’t sing but haven’t we got High Hair’ category. For fear of being sued I will omit the name of the source of this priceless information, but I can assure you this truly pathetic headline really did appear with the story … And … at the bottom of the page they asked for comments on how the readers feel about the flattening. Flattened is how I feel, and flabbergasted, and a few other words that begin with the letter ´F´ that journalists are capable of writing such utter garbage!
Spanish for Dummies WHEN IS a book not a book? Answer? When it’s an audio set, as this threedisk set is from Wiley’s ‘For Dummies’ series. Jessica Langemeier I’ve come across as a linguist in other colours of the language spectrum. She’s a lady who knows what she’s talking about, so I didn’t foresee any problems on slotting Disk 1 into my computer. Therefore I was Book pretty thrown when a lady with a Review by Californian accent (Ms Langemeier? Nah, couldn’t be) told me that ‘vosotros’ was the ‘very formal’ copy@dannyjpcollins.com third person plural of ‘you’. It might be for Jessica, but I always believed it to be the very informal case, and still do. So no points awarded there, or am I giving up too soon? Ms Langemeier, I’m pretty certain, is North American – so could it be her Spanish has a touch of the frijoles and refried beans? My dictionary tells me I’m right and so, it appears, do all the Spanish phrase books I’ve ever reviewed. Certainly in my days in Madrid 40 years ago, the use of ‘vosotros’ when talking to a group of my elders (or, gulp, the Guardia Civil) would have earned me a hard stare in the former circumstances and a swift clip around the ear in the latter. Ah well, come on, we’re not all perfect and we’re dealing here, as with most disk versions of language, with the US version.
Danny Collins
The BBC this ‘aint, so absolute beginners should expect to come out at the other end talking a bit like Speedy González. Those who already have mastered the lisps and ‘elyehs’ of Castellano should be saved. So, apart from a possible error on the first page, the rest looks conquerable. All in all, I found it quite fun to listen to and the lessons are repeated slowly enough for the listener to catch every phonetic. Also, being in disk form, you can play them in your car but do avoid mouthing the words to yourself at traffic lights as other drivers might find this off-putting. I’d certainly recommend this as an addition to someone’s Christmas stocking. After a few weeks they’ll find themselves at the stage of understanding what’s going on around them (well, perhaps Granny won’t but there you go…) and they should be able to ask simple questions in banks, stores, and hotels, whatever. Unless they really are a Dummy, of course. Author: Jessica Langemeier Publisher: Wiley Publishing (audio set) Price: 19.60€ ISBN: 978 0 047 09585 0

Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid in 2012 VOLVO UNVEILED the V60 Plug-in Hybrid in early 2011: a virtually production-ready car with carbon dioxide emissions below 50 g/km, to be launched in 2012 as the result of close cooperation between Volvo Car Corporation and Swedish energy supplier Vattenfall. In January 2007, Volvo Car Corporation and Vattenfall AB launched an industrial partnership to test and develop plug-in technology, creating the jointly owned company ‘V2 Plug-in-Hybrid Vehicle Partnership HB’.
The market’s first diesel plug-in hybrid is an attractive car type giving users access to the very best properties of an electric car and also a diesel-powered vehicle: very low fuel consumption and CO2 levels, combined with long range and high performance.
engine, calculated in Sweden at about 25 kronor (3€) per 100km: exact costs will vary from one market to another.
CHEAPER ON FUEL Powered solely by electricity, the V60 Plug-in Hybrid has a range of up to 50 kilometres and an operating range up to 1200km on a five-hour charge from any domestic outlet. Carbon dioxide emissions will average 49 grams per kilometre (NEDC EU Combined certification driving cycle) with fuel consumption 1.9 litres per 100km. The cost of the battery pack means the plug-in hybrid will be more expensive to buy than a Volvo V60 with a conventional combustion engine. However, fuel costs will be one-third of a conventional combustion
BENEFITS An electric motor is almost four times as efficient as a regular combustion engine, enabling an electrically powered car to consume less energy, producing lower emissions. European electricity production has an emission ceiling, meaning that even if all vehicles were to run on electricity, electricity production itself is not allowed to produce more carbon dioxide: this emission ceiling will be gradually lowered over a period of time. Electricity can be produced virtually without any CO2 emissions. Vattenfall is working towards halving the company’s emissions by
2030, becoming climate-neutral by 2050. Emissions from millions of exhaust tailpipes are transferred to a small number of production facilities: easier to control, they will operate on the basis of the EU’s trade in emission rights; this does not apply to the transport sector at present. Electric vehicles use relatively little electricity - the increase in consumption will be more than covered by ambitious expansion plans for renewable energy sources throughout Europe. Vattenfall will offer buyers of the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid a contract including electricity from renewable sources. Electricity production is undergoing rapid expansion with wind-power being commercially introduced on a large scale.

England’s World Cup Turmoil Revealed
Dennis Jordan NORTH REGION
Graham Rowntree WHILE MANY of the England rugby squad, the coaches and officials at the RFU will be dismayed that the PGB report in to the World Cup debacle was leaked to the press, as a fan, I’m glad it was. Given the widespread press coverage, it was clear that all was not well in the England camp in New Zealand but I had no idea that the problems were so huge. Players with no respect for the coaches (with the exception of Graham Rowntree), younger players feeling that senior players were taking the p**s as well as going out on it, shambolic team selection, unclear tactical thinking, weak leadership....the list just goes on and on. However, now that these complaints and criticisms are in the public domain, it gives English rugby a real chance to start afresh. If this report had been kept confidential, you can bet your bottom dollar that a huge amount of the feedback would have been brushed under the carpet. Now we know what they know, every single line of the report will need to be addressed, hopefully to the satisfaction of the media and the fans. First off, the RFU needs to put a coach and captain in place similar to that of Andy Flower and Andrew Strauss from the England cricket set up. Two strong men who demand respect from their players but who also deliver with regards to planning and practise. As to the person who leaked the report, it’s good to know that at there’s at least someone involved in English rugby can pass something on without dropping it. More Tests please We all like a bit of the bish-bash-bosh provided by one day and Twenty/20 cricket but, for me, Test cricket still provides the biggest thrills and the most enduring memories. Take the latest series played out between South Africa and Australia. The Proteus won the first match by overcoming a near 200 run deficit on 1st innings while Australia hit back to win the second game, recording the highest ever run chase in Johannesburg in to the bargain. To add to the drama, they had only two wickets in hand at the end and the winning runs were struck by an 18 year-old debutant, Pat Cummins, who was also named man of the match. Given the excitement of both matches, one has to ask why on earth these two great cricketing nations only played a two-Test series? Ups and downs of rugby league In sport as in life, you should always try and find a positive when confronted by a negative. So in terms of the 4 Nations Rugby League final, on the negative side, England had a great chance to beat the Aussies in Leeds but, yet again, they blew it. On the positive front, I found 63 cents and a stick of Kit-Kat down the back of the sofa while I was watching the game. Result.

THE WINTER is very much with us now with many of us suffering torrential downpours during the last week and with our fair share of thunder and lightning BUT the courses held up well under the onslaught although the top surface on many greens is now soft. The reason I mention this is because over recent months I have seen a tendency of putting greens on many courses to be soft and as a result any ‘heavy footed’ golfers tend to cut the surface up with modern rubber cleat spikes. Is it just me or did metal spikes never appear to make so much damage? The winter season prices were launched by some courses last week and many others will follow as from 1st December 2011. Please note that my office will be closed until 30th November 2011.

Tired? Noel’s world of golf By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Campo de Golf El Plantio 639 730 891
MANY GOLFERS suffer from fatigue after twelve or so holes of a round of golf. This inevitably leads to a loss of performance and a good score going down the pan in style. Very few acknowledge the real problem as being poor nutrition. They eat the wrong type of food before and during their rounds of golf giving little or no thought to the needs of their brain and muscles during what is often a five hour round of golf excluding any warm up routines they may undertake. Many of us expatriates will enjoy the full English breakfast before leaving home or at some courses just before going to the first tee. The fat content of this type of food will lead to lethargy and a serious deterioration in scores. When on the golf course many golfers will consume pies or pasties or sandwiches with a high fat content. Once again this type of food will lead to a lethargy that will definitely not help a golfer’s performance. These types of food are a way of life to many expatriate golfers and are very difficult to leave alone. The best type of food to consume before a round of golf is something that is much lighter by comparison. Things such as muesli and other cereals for breakfast with a low fat yogurt and some fruit will see performance increase considerably. Sandwiches with a low fat content made with wholemeal or granary bread should be consumed during the round at regular intervals. Hydration is another big problem for golfers. Many will have consumed alcoholic beverages the night before. This leads to dehydration which if not addressed very early the next day will lead to a big loss of concentration. During the round of golf, drinks should be con-

This type of diet may not seem the most exciting for many but for those who want to play golf at their best on a more regular basis serious consideration to what they consume before and during their rounds of golf will see a considerable improvement in performance. Win a round of golf for 2 including buggy at the beautiful El Plantio resort in Alicante TO ENTER this competition simply answer the question below correctly. Every correct answer will be entered into a draw at the end of the month and the winner of this fantastic prize worth over 180 Euros will be picked at random at the end of each month. Send your entries by email to golf@roundtownnews. com. The decision of the editor of Round Town News will be final in making the winning selection. Question for 25th November 2011: What was the first major championship won by John Daly? A. The Open Championship B. The US Open Championship C. The US PGA Championship All answers must be received no later than 5pm on 30th November 2011 to be entered into November’s draw, which will be made on November 30th. This weeks match was the 2nd in the Gary Smith team matches. The contractors are still joining up the large pipe which we believe will be used for the diverted water, and at present it is approximately half way down the length of the river. The fishing on the day, again, was hard with only a few anglers breaking into kilo double figures. Whether it has been the change in temperature, or that this section has been really hammered for fishing over the summer months, it is not fishing as good as usual. Top anglers on the day 1st Dave ( Yours Truly ) Hoare fishing the pole using bread with 25.76 kilo´s. 2nd Doug ( Welsh Goldminer ) Hornblow fishing the pole using bread with 18.84 kilo´s. 3rd Stan ( The Man ) Roberts fishing the pole using bread with 16.64 kilo´s.

ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS supplied by TERRY SCREEN THE MATCH this week was fished at Nancy’s being the 9th round of the Winter League on the15th November. This stretch of water is absolutely disgusting and is the worst I have ever fished and I was drawn on the road T- junction at Marjal Camp Site, the drainage ditch to my left was running that hard that the bottles were jumping the chain and the river was like a whirlpool of bottles and rubbish going around and around. It did eventually slacken off and I was able to fish after trying out three different rigs that I normally use on this water. The water coming out of the drain has gouged all the silt from the bottom and to my
surprise I had 9ft of water and eventually won the match from this peg. 1st Terry (Swing Em) Screen with 11.440kg fishing pole and maggot 2nd Stan (The Man) Roberts with 10.000kg fishing pole pellet and maggot 3rd Mark (Ken’s friend) Harrington with 8.120kg fishing pole feeder maggot and corn. Any members wishing to fish the Fur & Feather Match on the 13th December need to see Mick or myself for entry along with the 5€ fee as soon as possible. These and all other details are available on the website www.abbeyangling.com or from the match secretary Terry Screen on 965328368 ANGLERS TOGETHER WE HAVE been having a lot of enquiries about licenses from anglers who are passing the ‘magic age of 65’ and therefore pensioners! Licenses are still required and are free providing you have a Spanish Pensionista card, otherwise you will have to pay the normal fees. Licenses are available from either Town Halls, or the Caja Rural Bank if in Valencia region. In Murcia you will also require insurance. Make sure you take photocopies of all relevant documents to obtain your license. ie passport photo-page, NIE and insurance. Anglers Together was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater. Firm friendships have been formed during the time the group has been active and information on fishing venues and licenses required are available at the meetings or by regular emailed newsletters. Meetings are held in two locations each month. Anyone with an interest in fishing (sea or freshwater) is welcome to come along to a meeting to see what we’re about. The next meetings are: Friday 9th December at 12 o’clock at Mary’s Bar, Campoverde (near Pilar de la Horadada). Saturday 10th December at 12 o’clock at The New Royal Bar and Restaurant at El Alamillo, opposite the seafront between Isla Plana and Puerto de Mazarron.
