Blessing for the animals

A STATUE of Antoni Abad – the patron saint of animals – was carried from the Fisherman’s Church in Javea Port on Tuesday to watch over the annual blessing of the animals. Pets and working animals were sprinkled with Holy Water by Don Fernando, the priest of the parish of Our Lady of the Loreto in a popular and traditional annual ceremony.

EXPERIENCED SPORTS presenter Andy Kay has won a dream job at this summer’s London 2012 Olympic Games and is ready for the challenge of a once in a lifetime experience. Based on the Costa Blanca, Andy is a veteran of the Beijing Olympics – where he commentated for TV New Zealand – and was a trackside BBC reporter at the Barcelona and Atlanta Games. Preparations and meetings are already underway and Andy will be in the control room at the Olympic Stadium from 16th July as the media machine rehearses for the Olympics and Paralympics. His new job title is Sports Presentation Director and he is responsible for managing the partnership between the sport itself, the host broadcaster and the technology operators. Andy, who lives in Javea, told RTN this week: “It is a position designed to enhance the spectator experience within the stadium – to inspire, entertain and educate.” He has worked in the event, sport and media industry for more than 20 years, travelling the globe for Commonwealth Games and

World Championships and said: “This without a doubt will be the highlight of my career to date.” Previous highs included being stadium announcer at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. “It was a fantastic experience; there were 90,000 people in the stadium every day so it was quite exciting.” And he said commentating at Beijing and “watching sprinter Usain Bolt break every record was huge.” Andy added: “But working at your home Olympics is definitely a once in a lifetime experience. It will be full on and I am purely working in the stadium for the athletics.” He explained London would not attempt to repeat the successful formula of Beijing but would still attempt to make history. “Seb Coe has said this will be a very different Olympics. London does not have the same money or manpower that China had – but the stadium is absolutely fantastic. “And let’s hope the UK athletes across all sports feel the benefit of home advantage – just as the Spanish did in Barcelona in 1992.” Continued on page 7
