SUPERMARKET GIANT Mercadona has removed an own-brand dog food from the shelves as “a precaution” after pet owners claimed it was making their animals ill. Dogs were said to have suffered renal failure – and some have reportedly been put to sleep – after eating the Compy wet dog food. The first symptoms of a problem were pets developing an insatiable thirst and a resulting need to pass urine. RTN was told of some animals “screaming for water”. Social networking sites along the Costas have come alive with chatter and warnings about the food and how owners have racked up hundreds of euros in vet bills. A high salt content was blamed for the problem, which apparently started when the food packaging was switched from tins to cardboard ‘bricks’. Most dogs have made a full recovery after worried owners took their vets’ advice and switched to another brand of food. The supermarket recalled the Compy food, which comes in chunks or as a ‘pate’, on February 24th to allow the food to be tested. Manufacturer Tunaliment has discovered an excess of Vitamin D.
