OWNERS OF a Costa Blanca home are fighting to prevent the local council condemning their cliff top family home as a ‘ruin’.

The house and other homes in pretty Finestrat are perched on top of a rock face that engineers believe is moving away from the mountainside.

In January more than150 tons of rubble slipped down the face and onto the road below – at first there were fears the landslide was an earthquake.

Fortunately no-one was injured.

At a town hall meeting last week, the local authority called for every building in the terrace of houses to undergo a technical safety inspection, a sort of MOT for buildings.

However, the local authority wants to declare the Zunnebeld property a ruin - unsafe and uninhabitable.

Rebecca Zunnebeld said the family’s lawyers be-

lieved it was the council’s responsibility to prevent another rock fall and maintain the stability of the mountain, while the provincial government had a duty to insure safety on the road below.

She told RTN her parents went to the town hall three years ago when a huge crack opening in the cellar of the home and a geological study revealed the rock face was sliding.

Bay Radio launches Be Nice Day BAY RADIO is asking everyone along the Costas from Valencia to Mojacar to do something simple; Be Nice. by louise clarke The event, on 6th May, is being organised by the popular radio station to support your local charity AND the Spanish charity Caritas. All you have to do is participate in one of the fundraising events that are being organised up and down the coast. This is the radio station’s inaugural Be Nice Day and is a unique event with the aim of helping the many charities across their network; some of whom experienced a notable reduction in donations last year, and also to help the people in the region who are currently unemployed without any form of income and in need of food parcels. Ondara’s shopping centre, El Portal de La Marina, has shared out 2,900€ in prizes between three Las Fallas teams that triumphed in the recent Las Fallas online competition, run from 23 February to 11 March. The winners were Paris Pedrera with 263 votes (Denia), Campaments with 236 votes (Denia) and La font (Pego) with 161 votes. The competition had been run in the Centres facebook page online, with the winning teams receiving the most votes from their friends and fellow team mates. This morning (Wednesday), the Centre’s Director, Oscar Pastor, awarded the cheques to the three Fallas teams (pictured). A total of 1,118 votes were cast for all the teams in the competition.

continued from front page “It appeared our house was at the most dangerous point, apparently there are two sliding points, and they realised the cracks in the cellar and in the walls were caused by the rock moving,” said Rebecca.

“My parents had a second study completed but the town hall did not want to enter discussions and just denied there was a problem. This report confirmed it was very dangerous and our house was the most dangerous – and it was possible because of this huge opening that the house could fall.”

She added: “Last year they got really scared because the opening was getting wider and wider and engineers said we must abandon the house because it was too dangerous.”

On January 25th, she said: “Suddenly a huge part of the rock came down and suddenly action had to be taken.”

Rebecca said the rubble was cleared and on the cliff vegetation removed and water channelled, while any

further movement was monitored.

She said the family lawyers, specialists in such cases, were attempting to reach an agreement with the town hall and the provincial government over the house or there was the prospect of a court case.

“The town hall wants to declare the house a ruin which means the responsibility for the building passes back to us but the rock under the house is the council’s responsibility,” said Rebecca.

“The town hall has not addressed the problem that the rock is breaking away under the house.”

And she said the local authority “just seems to ignore the problem” and added: “They have not got any money and just don’t seem to want to take responsibility; they just want to spend money on visible things to get votes.

“I am extremely frustrated and fed up – at some point they are going have to repair the mountain but the whole situation is very dangerous.”

Spain wins deficit leeway

by jack troughton SPAIN IS to be allowed to exceed its 2012 budget target set by the European Union as it battles to bring member states’ debts into line and control the crisis.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy threw down the gauntlet at an EU summit in Brussels by saying this year’s achievable target was 5.8% of GDP – 1.4 points above the 4.4% goal previously agreed.

It was argued the original target was ”unrealistic” and meant finding savings of 44 billion euros when the country was heading for recession and with growing protests at cutbacks and controversial labour law reforms making it cheaper and easier to sack workers.

And Madrid claimed “victory” despite the EU clipping the excess back to 5.3% and the Spanish government continues to insist it will be on course to meet a shortfall target of 3% next year.

The Spanish Cabinet will have to approve a budget at the end of the month and will still have to agree some 35 billion euros worth of cuts. Mr Rajoy has called it a “difficult budget for difficult times”.

He is already looking to make a fighting fund available to cash-strapped re-

gional and municipal governments and has admitted central government had to make “important decisions.”

Mr Rajoy has said his first term in office would be filled with reforms and as well as labour laws, there would be changes in education, energy, justice and public services.

Spain has already had a visit from EC auditors, sent to look at the country’s books but the Organisation for Co-operation and Economic Development believes there are already “positive changes” in a number of major European economies, including Spain.

However, Eurozone officials fear that by allowing Spain leeway on its deficit target could prompt other EU countries to follow suit and put pressure on strict budget rules.

It is understood that Europe believes Spain has already made “great progress” under Mr Rajoy’s leadership and the Prime Minister had canvassed support of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy before making his move to increase the deficit target.

Cross-border fugitive held AN INTERNATIONAL fugitive wanted for murder has been arrested in a Costa Blanca bar – close to Guardia Civil barracks. The 49-year-old Dutch citizen, who made no attempt to resist, was taken into custody by officers of the National Police executing a European Arrest Warrant in Paseo de San Pedro in Altea, close to the seafront. The wanted man will be taken back to Holland, where with two alleged co-defendants he will face trial for murder, illegal possession of firearms and production of cannabis. If the fugitive is found guilty, under Dutch law he faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. It is alleged the man and two others ran a cannabis plantation in the Netherlands town of Barencrecht where they were attacked by two robbers planning on stealing the drugs. And further, it was said the three defendants began firing at the intruders, fatally wounding one of them. The two other men were arrested in Holland but the third decided to go on the run, fleeing to Spain.

Cannabis gang arrested FOUR PEOPLE have been arrested and almost 6,400 cannabis plants seized as National Police broke up an illicit export ring on the Costa Blanca.

Officers discovered one of the largest plantations ever discovered in Spain and said shipments by lorry were taking the drug overland to Holland.

Also seized at high tech greenhouses in Altea and La Nucia and at homes of the suspects were a sawn-off shotgun and a large quantity of tools and equipment

required for the cultivation of the plants. At a villa in Altea officers found a greenhouse with 3,800 plants – most having reached five feet in height in “ideal” growing conditions. And when police raided a home in La Nucia officers seized a further 2,250 pots of marijuana plants, recovering a further 329 plants.

The raids were the culmination of a month long investigation into what detectives described as “a well organised commercial production of drugs”.

by JAck troughton JALON VALLEY HELP has pledged to get ‘hands on’ and bring personal help to people living in the Val de Pop community.

HELP and its band of volunteers has traditionally raised funds and made grants to community projects but in a new role aims to directly aid vulnerable and isolated people, both young and old.

The changes were unveiled at the annual general meeting on Tuesday and include opening a drop in centre – Casa de Animo – in Alcalali later in the year.

Chairman Rhonda Ryan said there had been a lot of changes to the organisation and it had been a significant 12 months in HELP’s history.

“It has been a year in which we have seen the direction of Jalon Valley HELP change. In the past we have supported a lot of other organisations, very worthy organisations, and we hope to be able to continue to do so,” she said.

CHANGE “But in the course of this year we have looked to change direction – we are striving to help personally more people in our community. It is a major change.”

She said the charity had become involved with Consul Paul Rodwell and the British Consulate’s ConeXiones project, which linked the voluntary sector and Spanish social services to help expats. “Of course our role is wider than that, but it is quite a change.”

And Vice-Chairman Elaine Horton said it was clear from people ringing the Helpline for advice – varying from requests for infor-

mation to calls for help from people with lifethreatening conditions – that direct help was needed in the community.

She added: “The community has presented this committee with a number of difficult issues over the past year – I know all the other charities are struggling with these issues. We have to face the fact we are in a difficult financial situation with an aging population.”

Elaine said social care was in its infancy in Spain, where the culture had been to provide care through the family.

CUTS “People have fond memories of what happens in the UK, but people will tell you the cuts are swinging in the UK and the current care service provided are not what it was 10 years ago.”

But she said there was a “real willingness” in the community to address the problem and help out.

Elaine said the new drop in centre would provide a “warm and inviting” place for all ages and nationalities.

She said: “We want to create a place where people can come and get accurate advice, provide emotional support for those who are troubled, and improve social contact for those who are isolated and vulnerable.”

Treasurer Lorrie Harkness presented the audited 2011 accounts showing income for the year was more than 53,460€ and grants had been made of almost 31,000€, with capital reserves carried into the current year of 30,820€.

Orihuela to take Valencia to court over the court building by louise clarke THE ORIHUELA Town Hall has said this week that if the Valencia government does not pay them the debt it owes for the courthouse in the city within 90 days, it will be taken to court and evicted from the building.

According to the Councillor for Planning and Projects, Antonia Moreno, if no agreement is reached on the building, which was constructed eight years ago on municipal land, the Town Hall will take the matter to court in June.

Moreno said that according to the survey done by the municipal technicians, the regional Government should have paid the Town Hall about three million euros when it moved from the old courthouse, near the Town Hall, to the current more modern courthouse building.

The Councillor added: “In real terms, the Valencian Government owes Orihuela at

least ten million euros.”

She also emphasised the “lack of commitment” in which the Valencia Government has shown Orihuela with regards to this issue and also the health provision and infrastructure for the municipality, which is also their responsibility.

Moreno said: “Orihuela seems to have developed a charitable relationship with the Valencian Government and this must no longer be allowed to continue.”

Moreno said that the Valencia Department of Finance had proposed to the Town Hall that they allow them to buy the land on which the Palace of Justice is built but without setting any commitments or payment schedule. She said: “The government team will not make any transfers or agree to the signing over of the land without a firm agreement of payment terms.”

Passengernumbersdown SPAINISH AIRPORTS witnessed a fall in passenger numbers last month, 5.6% down on February 2011, according the airport authority AENA. Alicante’s Altet Airport recorded 455,827 passing through the terminal, itself a drop of 12.9% on 12 months earlier. A total of 11.6 million passengers used AENA airports in Spain in February, 6.8 million on international flights – down 0.7% - 4.6 million travelling within the country. However Murcia’s San Javier Airport saw an increase in travellers, up 10%, La Palma up 11.7% and Santander recording an increase of 21.7% in passenger numbers. And fewer travellers used the capital’s Barajas Airport, down 7.4%, while Barcelona saw a slight increase of 0.7%. The figures released this week showed the number of flights operating through Spanish airports was 133,353, 9.8% less than February 2011.

Support for strike

by Jack Troughton SPANISH UNIONS expect massive support for the general strike on 29th March and the protest against planned labour law reforms.

The general secretaries of the CCOO and UGT say members are prepared to fight to win substantial modifications to the changes tabled by the government.

They maintain there is no “apathy” or sense of “resignation” amongst members preparing to protest at the end of the month and believe the mass action will trigger a period of “reflection” by politicians in Madrid. The unions are calling for the government to sit down and negotiate and have criticised the lack of proper dialogue. And it was said rather than seeking changes to labour laws, the government should concentrate on tax reforms and overhauling the financial system to develop investment policies to sustain employment, public services and make credit available to both families and businesses.

New children’s traffic park opens

by Louise Clarke A NEW children’s traffic park opened this week in Pilar de la Horadada. Located in the grounds of the Integrated Security Centre, which houses the municipality’s Local Police and Civil Protection, the park is an 800 square metre miniature traffic park which is expected to attract thousands of students from all over the southern Valencia region. As part of the regional curriculum’s driver education programmes, local schools will be allowed to visit the park and children will be guided around it on their bikes or other small modes of transport such as scooters and tricycles.

well as other Councillors from the Pilar Town Hall attended the inauguration in which the Mayor stressed the importance of road safety education for all children; regardless of age. The park is open everyday and can be visited by anybody who wants to use it; you don’t have to be a resident of Pilar de la Horadada. The enclosed circuit includes, roads and junctions, traffic lights, 55 different street and traffic signs and pedestrian crossings and it is a great way to have a couple of hours of fun with the kids whilst educating them on road safety at the same time. You can also use the six pedal cars that are available, which can be used by both kids and adults and there are around a dozen bikes for children and adults and ample parking space outside the circuit.

Electricity scam

CONMEN POSING as electricity workers are working in the Marina Alta preying on the unwary and the elderly, police warned this week. The bogus company workmen arrive unannounced to “replace” a home’s electricity meter before demanding payment in cash for the job. Javea Local Police has warned the gang of scammers are operating in the municipality and has underlined to the public that genuine company workmen would never demand direct payment and any work would be charged to the next electricity bill. Anyone who has fallen victim to the fraud or anyone with any information about the gang is asked to contact the police as soon as possible.

Iberia strike off

by Jack Troughton PILOTS AT Spanish carrier Iberia have ditched a series of strikes threatening to bring holiday chaos, according to the airline.

The protest at the launch of a new budget airline involved plans for 24 days of strikes between today (16th March) and 28th May – including the busy Easter period.

Since December Iberia pilots have staged 12 days of strike action and the protest

was joined last month by colleagues represented by the cabin crew union Stavla.

A spokeswoman for Iberia confirmed the threat to flights had been lifted. “The pilots have accepted the proposal to have a mediator.” It is understood that the industrial action to date had forced Iberia, part of the International Airlines Group with British Airways, to cancel some 1,400 flights at a cost of 36 million euros.

I WOULD like to make a suggestion to Norah Bond that she changes the name of her charity to HAHA instead of HAH following the “comedy” performance last week at the Civic Centre in Playa Flamenca.

My wife and I have been following HAH’s progress for a while and it is very positive to see that someone is trying to get through to the authorities on our (the public) behalf. We were both looking forward to the informative meeting with the Social Services to see exactly what we are entitled to and how to go through the correct channels to obtain it. Let’s face it, we like others, are not getting any younger and we want to stay here in Spain and not be a burden on our family in the UK. The meeting which started off ok quickly turned into a farce. One lady very rudely interrupted the meeting with questions she wanted answers to none of which had anything to do with the meeting. Then to make matters worse Mrs. Bond brought her own meeting to a standstill by holding up a petition and asking for signatures! I could not unfortunately understand the Spanish social workers who attended the meeting but they were certainly not happy and started packing up ready to leave.

This meeting could have been a step towards working together with Social Services. My wife said they certainly won’t be in hurry to sit down with us again. What a shame!

Mayor abusing his power

WHY HAS the green party mayor taken over the job of councillor for the coast? If my memory serves me correctly the green party got a lot less than 200 votes. The CLR-CLARO alliance got about 10 times what the greens got. Orihuela Costa is supposed to be a democracy so why has the man who cannot even speak English and with so few votes ignored our wishes and acted in such a high-handed fashion.

As an Orihuela Costa resident I voted for the CLR-CLARO alliance. We turned out in force to get rid of Monica Lorente and her gang of bullies and thieves, to elect a team that would fight for our rights. I know that one of the elected CLR-CLARO councillors resigned, maybe he was not up to the job, but if my memory serves me correctly I voted for a list of about 30 people, could one of them not be appointed instead to the mayor trying to grab more power?

I love living in Spain, but I am not a second class citizen. The mayor is abusing his power by imposing himself on us. He is no better than Monica Lorente or Franco.

I AM willing to put money on the fact that “ Terence M. Newman” belongs to the Conservative party or is a rabid supporter. ( RTN letters 2-3-2012) Once again as Cpl. Jones used to say “ They don’t like it up’em!” If he knew what the word politics meant he would know that it’s an old Greek word meaning ‘of the people’.

First of all democracy is a timid beast that has to be nurtured at every opportunity. Second, socialism and the love of our fellow humans is international.

Third, the RTN deserves to be congratulated for its contribution to democracy by airing views that may be contrary to its own political stance, but also that it helps to have a Tory baiter like me who provides good copy to inflame “ Mr. Angry of the Costas” to be inspired to write to your free newspaper.

Orihuela’s cross is safe La Cruz de la Muela

by LOUISE CLARKE LA CRUZ de la Muela will be declared an official point of local interest at the next Orihuela Town Hall meeting. The announcement came this week after the Valencia Government approved the Town Hall’s request to make the cross, which sits at the top of the mountain behind the city, a monument of local relevance.

The Councillor for Heritage, Manuel Culiañez, said that from now on, the symbol will have maximum protection and will be listed as a grade one monument under urban landscape regulations and under no circumstances will it be ever altered or demolished as it now has the highest degree of protection.

Cock fighting arrests

By Jack Troughton NATIONAL POLICE have arrested 46 people at an illegal cock fighting ring in the Alicante town of Callosa de Segura.

Entrance to the weekend fights and to bet on the birds involved in the combat cost 10€ and people travelled from neighbouring provinces to make up the audience and bet between 300€ and 600€ per contest – although larger sums could change hands during a fight, up to 10,000€ according to detectives.

Police revealed six of those arrested were organisers of the cock fighting and recovered 7,000€ in cash, spurs attached to chickens’ legs during the battles, weighing scales and substances such amphetamines and caffeine, designed to increase a bird’s aggressiveness.

The investigation, named ‘Crest’, was launched a month ago based on information supplied by suspicious breeders and involved officers of the force’s drugs and organised crime unit.

Having done the first session with her at the beginning of the week and also one at the end of the week she is showing signs of improvement and hasn’t fainted all week. Her next session will be to teach her Auto Hypnosis so that she can calm herself down very fast in any particular situation.

Another one this week was a Clinical Psychologist who has a phobia of reading from a script in public. He is OK talking to people and giving lectures etc. but his problem is if he has to read something from a blackboard or from a sheet of paper he simply can’t get the words out.

A charming young lady presented herself this week to me because she is absolutely terrified of her brother. This stems back to early childhood when he would bully her. From then she has never been able to settle herself in front of him, having palpations, sweating, etc.. The reason she has come to me now

is because of a big family occasion coming up and he will be there.

People seem to always leave it until the last minute or when they are backed into a corner before they seek to overcome their problem. A classic example of this is the person who rings me up with the fear of flying.

And when I ask them when they are going its usually first thing the next morning.

One fear of flying that I did a few years ago was particularly rewarding. It was a Saturday evening when I received a phone call from a very distressed young lady. She explained to me that she had just got married that day and they were jetting off on their honeymoon and her husband walked off the plane and wouldn’t go!

They were able to get it rebooked for the Tuesday and could I help him. As it normally takes 4 sessions to deal with this they were at my office at 10pm that night again on the Sunday and Monday and finally at 6.00am on the Tuesday morning as their flight was going at 10am. The end result was they sent me a lovely postcard from their honeymoon destination and on their return I received some of their wedding cake as well!

HUNDREDS OF visitors helped the Women in Business Club’s health, beauty and gift fair a success – and raise 1,500€ to support the victims of domestic violence.

The club’s event at Javea’s Parador Hotel marked International Women’s Day and the warm sunshine on Sunday guaranteed a good crowd attended.

The money raised by WIBC, which runs two fairs a year, goes to support four women’s shelters in the Marina Alta; the fourth in Vergel has just been opened and fitted out for use by women and children fleeing abusive relationships.

WIBC President Chris Duffin told RTN: “All the money we raise goes to the shelters and the women and children who arrive at them having escaped domestic violence. We are now up to four, we have just kitted out an emergency shelter in Vergel and in the Marina Alta area we have three residential units.

“Unfortunately, they are all full. The trouble is with the economic downturn, the less money

there is the more victims of abusive relationships there are.”

CANDLE Sunday’s fair started with the traditional WIBC opening ceremony of lighting three candles – the first was for the club’s membership and the contribution members make, the second for the day being commemorated by the events, and the third for women who have been killed through domestic violence over the last 12 months.

Chris said the 39 stalls at the Parador were all busy and provided a “great variation” of attractions for visitors “it is not all just health, beauty and women’s stuff, there is something for everyone.”

However, some exhibitors faced a marathon task actually getting to the hotel to set up – the fair clashed with a road race and police had closed some of the streets for the athletes. “Eventually all bar one made it in the end.”

by Jack Troughton SPAIN’S BEST known holiday resort provided a backdrop for a new Bollywood blockbuster ‘Anna Bond’ as filming took place in the streets of Benidorm’s Old Town.

With a $2 million budget, two Indian actors and a crew of 32 from makers Poornima Enterprise and Spanish company Camino Media filmed a dream sequence for the love story which involves the hero doing his utmost to escape the long arm of the Mafia.

And the presence of the cameras attracted an audience of tourists as the action took place along the steps leading from Playa del Mal Pas and the castle. According to the makers it was worth travelling thousands of miles to shoot scenes in Spain which has a growing hold on Indians interested in its culture, traditions and cities.

Home test to cut cancer deaths

by Jack Troughton VALENCIA’S HEALTH chief Manuel Escolano believes a simple home testing kit can slash deaths caused by cancer of the colon by almost a third.

The Director of Public Health said early detection of the disease “can cut the mortality rate from this cancer by up to 30%”. And he said an early diagnosis meant a “less aggressive and more effective” intervention while pre-cancerous polyps could be removed helping prevent the onset of cancer.

The Department of Health is to distribute 500,000 kits to people living in Alicante to people aged between 50 and 69. It will also instruct those with concerns to call a dedicated telephone number or contact their local health centre.

According to data, more than 3,000 cases of colon cancer are detected in Valencia each year, and annually 28,000 people are diagnosed with the disease across Spain. It is the second leading cause of deaths by cancer and the government believes preventative work must be a priority.

Making the news with Viva TV

FIFTEEN MEMBERS of STAGEKiiDZ, which is based in Benidorm, were literally making the news when they paid a visit to the Viva TV studios recently for a little insight into how television programmes are made.

STAGEKiiDZ run classes for stage, TV and drama and were delighted when Viva TV agreed to host a workshop as part of the student’s education into all different aspects of the media industry. The youngsters task was to make a news programme with a breaking top story that aliens had taken over

the cars on the Costa Blanca and had given them a mind of their own.

VALUABLE Everyone had a role to play from studio based newsreader using autocues to camera and sound operators, roving reporters ,eyewitnesses and even a nutty professor.. They were shown “green screen” techniques and later, once all the filming had been completed the students watched as their show was edited to make a finished news programme. Joanne

Venet, who runs STAGEKiiDZ, told RTN: “All the students had a fabulous and informative time with Viva TV. At STAGEKiiDZ we like to offer all round entertainment and media training and this experience was a valuable addition to our programme.” Richard Hayward, Director of Viva TV, added: “We really enjoyed giving the members of STAGEKiiDZ a little idea of what goes into making a television programme. I hope it has given a few of them the taste to learn more and join what is a very exciting industry.”

SPAIN HAS ended its Antarctic research programme after closing its two bases – Gabriella de Castilla and Juan Carlos 1 – and ordering the navy’s oceanographic vessel ‘Las Palmas’ back to home waters. The ship has already left the frozen continent and is expected to dock in her home port of Cartagena in Murcia in the middle of next month.

During her time in the Antarctic, Las Palmas has travelled a distance of a trip equivalent to a circumnavigation of the globe and crossed some of the most hostile seas on the planet. She has also ferried more than 168 scientists – an international elite from Spain, Portugal, Japan, Argentina, Germany, Bulgaria, Mongolia, Italy and the USA.

San Javier to host Spain’s national Jet Ski championship

by louise clarke IF YOU don’t fancy celebrating Paddy’s Day, the start of the Formula One Grand Prix season and you haven’t got your mum here to spoil, why not have a trip down to Santiago del Ribera this weekend and watch the Spanish National Jet Ski Championships? The Mayor of San Javier, Juan Martinez Pastor, the Councillor for Sports, Carlos Albaladejo and the President of the Spanish Motorboat Federation, Jose Miguel Martinez, announced on Wednesday that Spain’s Jet Ski Endurance Championship will be held this weekend, 17th and 18th March, in the waters off Santiago de la Ribera.

STRATEGIES Jose Miguel Martinez explained that this will be an endurance test in which the jet skis have to cover a distance of 200 miles on a circuit that can be seen from all of the beaches of Santiago de la Ribera, although the departure and arrival will be in Playa Los Arcos. Martinez said the level of difficulty of the test requires race strategies to cope with five refuelling stops and depending on sea conditions the race could take until 4.30pm on Sunday to complete.

The participating teams will come from all over Spain, including Madrid, Valencia, Andalucía,

the Basque Country and Catalonia and last year’s winners, Antonio Vivanco and Juanfra Rodríguez, who come from the Murcia region, will be competing again in the hope of regaining their title.

Jose Miguel Martinez welcomed the positive cooperation of the San Javier Town Hall and invited members of the public to come along and watch the race from any point of the Santiago de la Ribera promenade this weekend. The Mayor of San Javier

said that he was delighted that his town was being asked to host such a prestigious and first class sporting event and said that this event will have a hugely positive impact on Santiago de la Ribera. The Councillor for Sports told RTN: “This is one of many sporting events that San Javier has hosted since last September and we will be continuing to promote both sports and sports tourism in the municipality from now until the end of the summer season.”

THE PRESIDENT of the United States of America Barack Obama and Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy are scheduled to meet for the first time later this month – but for little more than a hand shake. The two leaders are scheduled cross paths on 27th March at a summit on nuclear safety in Seoul, while a more formal introduction is likely to take place at NATO talks being staged in Chicago on 20th and 21st May. A White House spokesman believed President Obama and the Spanish Premier would have the opportunity to “speak to each other” in Seoul, Mr Rajoy’s aides think there would be only a greeting between the pair.

Mr Rajoy is still waiting for a first invitation to the White House but diplomats say will have the chance for talks with the President at the NATO summit.

JAVEA INTERNATIONAL Festival Association is staging its fourth annual flea market from 9am until 5pm on Sunday 18th March at the Arenal.

The ‘rastro’ is dedicated to selling second-hand goods and takes place on Avenida de la Libertad, near the shops at the Arenal Beach area.

The association, which brings together the dozens of different nationalities living in Javea, started the market in 2008 on the initiative of French members as they are a typical tradition in their own country.

The market also helps raise funds for the three day international festival held in the town every summer.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL comes to the Costa Blanca on Saturday (17th March) when the La Nucia Spartans face the mighty Cartagena Pretorianos in an exhibition match. I can’t blame Ryanair

MUCH DEBATE and disappointment this week in our neck of the woods at the news that Ryanair have done a U Turn and have pulled out of the Almeria to Liverpool route.

Background to this is that Monarch used to fly from Manchester and Birmingham into Almeria, but recently withdrew the Manchester flight. Ryanair stepped forward announcing a twice weekly service to start at the end of March.

Good news for all, Ryanair were to be the single handed saviour of the all but non existent tourist business along the Costa Alameria and overnight would become the airline of choice for many a second property owner.

Only it wasn’t to be! Ryanair pulled out claiming that the landing fees at Almeria are too high (they are) and the Almeria does virtually nothing to attract the airlines aka tourists (again true).

So never mind that Almeria airport is over 100m€ in debt and on the list to be reviewed to be closed following the reversal in the governments decision no to semi privatise the airports. Never mind the fact that Almeria’s Tourist Board have a stated aim to turn the region into area of Gastronomic Tourism and as such are targeting a specific market with a higher disposable income that the ‘traditional British tourist’. And then there is the fact that Almeria has always been set as a second property destination for Spaniards, as well as the Brits, Germans, Swedes etc etc.

No there was a bandwagon to be jumped on: the

let’s hate Ryanair one! Now it is no secret that as an airline I don’t really like them. I am not a fan of the ‘budget approach’ and the ‘extras’ soon add up BUT as a business they have to be admired, and dare I say it encouraged! In an age when hardly anyone is making any money the fact that they are is impressive, and one way or another we need them.

They pulled out of Granada for similar reasons not so long ago you may remember so for those that are saying that it is just a publicity stunt, a way of making money by getting bookings paid for when they had no intention of flying I can only muster two words: grow up! If the economics made sense I have no doubts that of all the airlines Ryanair would be making a go of it. Monarch couldn’t and they pulled out, so why can’t Ryanair? The fact that they hadn’t communicated and refunded deposits before people started getting in touch? Conspiracy?

Rubbish, this is the age of the Internet and things move so quickly these days I doubt they had time to set the processes up before the news was spread like wildfire.

The facts are in the story: Almeria doesn’t want the classic British Tourist. It has figured out that the likes of Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Tenerife and Gran Canaries are going to get them. They are del establish, popular and a safe bet for the tourists.

Almeria like many a destination has to re-invent itself and they are totally entitled to do what they want, how they want. If that sits uncomfortably with some that is just tough I am afraid.

Sticking with airlines interesting to read that Iberia has announced plans to take its striking pilots to court by commencing legal action against their union, SEPLA. According to the airline, it loses three million euros a day when the pilots down tools in protest. The upcoming strikes will hit every national public holiday between now and June, which could cost the airline substantial amounts of money.

Over half of the team of 390 pilots working for the now-defunct flight company Spanair have been taken on by other carriers at home and abroad, say sources from the company. Around 50 have been employed by Qatar Airways and several others by low-cost company Vueling, whilst 150 are now with Hong Kong Airlines – part of the Hainan group.

Jose Padilla is the bull fighter that ended up with a bulls horn going through his lower jaw and out of how left eye. He now wears a eye patch and talks with a lisp, but has returned to the ring five months after the ‘accident’.

The 31-year-old Spaniard, daughter of Formula One driver Emilio de Villota, has won a treasured opportunity with the team, one of three new additions to the Grand Prix grid.

And while Maria is unlikely to get behind the wheel for one of this season’s races, she will be closely involved with Marussia and its testing programme and steps ever closer to the glamour of life in the fast lane.

Local club needs a new home

THE MODEL Railway Club of the Costa Blanca used to be based in a warehouse in Catral and RTN reported on the club on various occasions during its time there.

Unfortunately, due to poor visitor numbers and an astronomical rate rise on the warehouse, the club had to leave there and are now desperately looking for new premises.

Ideally the warehouse needs to be 30 metres in length and 10 metres wide in order to fit their fantastic and very realistic model railway, preferably without any obstructions in the middle and if it could be bigger than that, it would be even better!

The club hopes to rebuild the grand model railway exhibition in a new warehouse and members have said that it would be make a great tourist attraction for any municipality.

As result of the potential that an exhibition has to be a visitor attraction, the club would ideally like the backing of the appropriate Town Hall and look forward to working with them for the benefit of all residents and visitors.

A large percentage of the income taken from the exhibition will be donated to the Paul Cunningham Nurses, so if you can help, you will also be helping this very worthy cause.

IT HAS been a glorious week here in Blighty. And with the sun shining and the daffodils bursting their golden hue all around, everyone is getting in the mood for spring. In a few short weeks the clocks go back spilling that extra bit of light into our long nights.

Perfect, so pretty good timing for the Environment Agency to tell us that a hose-pipe ban will be put in place fairly soon, eh? Yup, it seems the water companies, so keen on profit grabbing but less so on infrastructure spending, have announced that all things agua, ‘ain’t been this bad since 1976’. “The lakes are low,” they say, “the reservoirs are not replete but it’s definitely not our fault.” One company in the South West is ‘allegedly’ believed to have had leaking reservoirs for years. “Oh, no we haven’t!” It now appears that we may soon have to shower (not bath) with friends or family.

Overpriced and inky Anyway, enough of this and down to business; I would like to express my thanks to all of the RTN readers who wrote to confirm that the price of the Spanish edition of The Sun on Sunday is indeed a whacking 2€. Many felt that they were being overcharged for the privilege of Murdoch’s paper, which in Britain retails at just 50p.

Take for instance RTN reader Bernard Woodward.

Bernie said, “I went to pick up my usual Mail on Sunday with the thought of also buying a copy of the Sun, as a matter of interest.” Like many others Bernie had heard that the UK price was going to be just 50p. He said, “I mistakenly thought that the price here would be reflected against that but was amazed to find that as with all the English papers out here was charged a small fortune.”

The thing that further irks Bernard is the actual quality of the Spanish produced editions of British papers. Every weekend he buys the Saturday Mail and the Mail on Sunday. He said, “The quality of the paper and the print is a disgrace. Some of the print cannot

Hmmm, that’d buy a few nice San Miguels, Bernard.

In comparison he rightly notes that all the free local papers like his fabulous Friday RTN are what you

would expect from today’s technology. He said he likes every aspect from, “the quality of paper” to the “full colour of the print”. He says that unlike the Mail on Sunday the print stays on the page and not on your hands “leaving them like a coal miners’”. Erm, I think you may also need to mention the great articles contained therein, Bernie. Why does he still buy the nationals I hear you ask? “It’s that link with home,” Bernard admitted, “it’s my only defence!” And it’s one I truly recognise Bernard.

WHICH IS the right spelling? Advisor or adviser?

We’ve been having the debate in our offices.

Advisor is the American spelling of the word and so its use is immediately inflammatory to some of us on a par with ‘color’ and ‘center’. However, for others, tax advisor is the most international spelling and is used most frequently online. The outcome of our spelling conundrum? The British influence victorious, we agree on ‘advisers’.

It might seem a petty squabble but choice of title, and its spelling, is important. In the legal and tax world there are plenty to choose from - legal advisers and executives, solicitors, barristers and lawyers. But here’s a professional who is even more difficult to pin down - the Spanish ‘gestor’. Many people who find themselves living in or visiting Spain frequently, have had some contact with the multitalented ‘gestor’. It might have been to sort out a driving licence, transfer ownership of a car or tackle some other aspect of mind-numbing bureaucracy.

As Spain is burdened down with paper work it’s no wonder that the gestor has plenty of quasi-legal activities to get involved with. But how are they different from the abogado and what role does the asesor hold? It’s not always easy to work out what’s what, who’s who and which door to knock on.

So we’ve done a little table for you.

I can see another conundrum emerging. Our title is Ábaco Asesores, but we do much more than deal with tax advice and information. We have an inheritance department, we have lawyers, we do conveyancing and handle disputes. In fact, maybe we shouldn’t be either advisors or advisers but ‘Ábaco Abogadas` and try saying that first thing in the morning. On second thoughts, with so many titles to choose from perhaps the best decision is just to be ‘Ábaco’ instead.

Football debts soar SPAIN’S PROFESSIONAL football clubs are in financial crisis and owe the taxman a whopping 752 million euros according to government figures. The debt, accurate to 1st January this year, has shot up almost 145,000€ over the last four years – and the top tier of clubs bear the lion’s share of the cash denied the public purse, almost 490 million euros. The figures were confirmed in response to a parliamentary question tabled by the United Left party inquiring the aggregate balance of money owed to the treasury. However, it was further revealed that football clubs were even deeper in the red because the debt did not include unpaid social security contributions, officials claiming this data remained “confidential”.

FIVE MONTHS ago I purchased a second hand car from a dealer. Last week while I was driving the car it started to overheat, and I had to take it to a garage. The mechanic advises that the cylinder head and motor are distorted, and in poor condition and must be replaced, with the cost for the repair estimated at around €4,000. Can I ask the car dealer to pay for this repair or can I get my money back?

Dear reader, Thank you for your consultation. First of all, as always, we must point out that it is difficult for us to provide the full legal advice without seeing the contract that you signed with the car dealer.

However, in general terms we can inform you that if you purchased the car for your personal use and not for a professional activity, then it is our opinion that you should be considered as consumer / user, and therefore the law (as we

describe below) is therefore applicable to your case.

According to the General Law for Protection of Consumers and Users plus additional complementary Laws of 1/2007 (LGDCU) ((Ley General para la Defensa de los Consumidores y Usuarios y otras leyes complementarias (R.D.L. 1/2007)) the company/ dealer who sold you the car is required to deliver the car as agreed in the contract, and will be held liable if the car does not fit the description and quality specified at the time of the sale, or if the car is not suitable for a normal use.

If, as you say, the car was not in the good condition indicated by the vendor, and because of the problem a major failure far beyond the type of failure generally expected through normal wear and tear over the five months that you have owned the used vehicle, it is our view that according to article 118 of the above mentioned Law, you as the consumer are entitled to claim either the repair, a substitute car in place of the existing one, a price reduction or to terminate the contract.

Legally and according to article 123 of the LGDCU, the vendor is responsible for the lack of performance, in this case evidenced by the occurrence of the failure of the vehicle, for which you should be repaid by him. This and any other failures should be covered by the dealer during the guarantee period, which is normally for 2 years from delivery, although in some cases as with second hand cars, it could be agreed to shorten this time to a 1 year period, this being the shortest guarantee period allowed by law.

Additionally from what you state in your consultation, you should also know that unless the vendor can prove otherwise, since the lack of performance and the failure has occurred before the end of a six month period from the delivery of the product, it is taken that the problem already existed when the car was delivered.

Therefore according to the above, since you were not warned of the existing problem with the purchased vehicle which goes far and beyond the normal wear and tear expected over time, with this problem appearing only 5 months after the purchase, it is our opinion that it is you right to ask the dealer to meet the costs of the repair. In this respect we can quote the Court Order 382/2011 of 3rd October which was issued by the Court of the Province of Alicante (Section 9). We can also quote Court Order 99/2011 of 2nd of March of Court of the Province of Alicante (Section 8) for those cases where the purchaser requested refund of money and assurance of the contract.

A Telecoms company fined 40,000 euros A TELECOMS company has been fined â‚Ź40,000 for failing to cancel the bad debt of 1 cent registered against one of their customers at the central debtors registry.

The debt was paid, but the 1 cent debt arose due to a rounding error in the calculation of the IVA and the automatic ac-

Michael IF YOU are concerned with any kind of Property transaction involving urban, that is to say Olmer developed, land in Spain you must always be aware of the liability to pay the Plusvalia Tax.

It is charged either on the sale of a property, or if the property is the subject of an inheritance, if it is transferred in some other way, or if it is given away.

This tax is a local tax charged by each municipality on the increase in value of Urban land in its own district land and is distinct from Capital Gains Tax. It is important to realise that the tax is charged on land alone, not on the buildings that may stand on the land.

The rates of tax are set by each municipality and can vary widely from one district to another. The tax is based on the increase in the official, that is to say the “Catastral”, value of the land which a property occupies. This is the same value that is used to set your local property tax or “IBI” and can be found on the bill for your “IBI” issued by your local ayuntamiento each year and is shown as the “valor del suelo”.

The actual price at which a property changes hands, or the value attributed to it if is the subject of a gift or inheritance is irrelevant.

On a sale of a property it is the responsibility of the

seller to pay the tax, but if the seller fails to pay it this responsibility may be passed to the buyer.

If the property is being inherited or is the subject of some other type of gift it is the beneficiary or recipient of the property who is liable to pay the tax.

Certain transactions are exempt from the Plusvalia Tax, the main ones which are likely to affect the general public are the transfer of property between spouses who are divorcing, or to children to comply with Court judgments, and “aportaciones” or transfers to companies in which spouses are the only shareholders which may be used for tax planning.

The amount of the tax that will be charged on a transaction will depend firstly on the Catastral value of the land which the property occupies, and secondly on the length of time since it last changed hands. If you are selling an individual house which stands on a large plot which you have owned for a considerable length of time the amount of the Plusvalia Tax could be many thousands of Euros. On the other hand, as the tax is charged on the value of land alone, the amount of Plusvalia Tax charged on a flat in a block which you have not owned for very long the tax may be quite modest.

For those of you who are considering rearranging your financial affairs to take advantage of tax planning schemes, the amount of Plusvalia tax that may be due is one of a number of elements, which include the Notary and other fees that may be payable, which you need to consider when balancing the costs and benefits of these schemes. Depending on the amount of Plusvalia, it may be cheaper to make a gift of the property rather than enter into more complex arrangements with higher Notary and other fees.

The time for paying the Plusvalia Tax is within 30 days of a sale or gift between living people, or 6 months of the date of death on an inheritance.

If you are selling a property when you budget for the expenses of the sale always get an up to date figure for the amount of the Plusvalia Tax as the buyer will almost certainly want to retain the amount out of the price to make sure that it is paid.

Your town hall can advise you of the amount of Plusvalia that may be payable on a transaction involving your property, or in many cases it is possible to obtain the calculation “on line”, but as I always write in concluding these articles, if in doubt take professional advice.

WHY DO the rates I obtain for my currency exchange transfers differ from the ones I see on television and the internet? Who actually gets those rates?

With so much focus on exchange rates in the past 24 months more and more clients are trying to track them via the media you mention. The main issue in doing so is the fact that rates vary according to the individual media you are

looking at and therefore no published rate can be completely accurate or relevant.

Generally, the rates seen on web sites, TV news programmes and Ceefax tend to be mid range prices for a particular currency pair. So if we take the Sterling v Euro rate, there will be clients trading Sterling from the UK into Euros and clients here in Spain trading Euros back to Sterling. The mid range or Inter Bank rate often published is therefore a guide as to where the currency is trading at a particular point on a general level. Even large corporations trading huge sums do not achieve the quoted mid range price. It is also worth bearing in mind that these markets are extremely fluid and can change very quickly.

On some web sites the tourist rate is shown and this is an indication of what you would receive changing money at a bureaux de change or high street bank.

As an example, at the time of writing this answer, the tourist rate for buying Euro with Sterling was 1.1567 and the mid range price 1.2054 so depending on the amount you are trading the rate you obtain will be within this range. If you were buying / selling a property, the rate would be higher than if you are transferring small amounts for living expenses.

Augmented Reality –The future now!

IMAGINE A device which, when you use it to look at something, displays information on whatever you’re pointing it at.

Focus on a restaurant, and a display pops up giving a menu and customer reviews, look at a historic building, and you’re told when and by whom it was built, or point towards that chap sitting opposite you on the metro, and find out this stranger’s name and age. These are the sort of possibilities afforded by the new technology of augmented reality. And the best way to take advantage of this futuristic technology is by using your smartphone although an unlimited data package would be preferable.

In fundamental terms, the expression augmented reality, often abbreviated to AR, refers to a simple combination of real and virtual (computer-generated) worlds. Given a real subject, captured on video or camera, the technology ‘augments’ (= adds to) that real-world image with extra layers of digital information. Those of us who enjoy watching television coverage of sport will already have experienced a basic form of augmented reality in action. Picture the cricket pitch on which a logo for a well-known sponsor miraculously appears or an Olympic swimming race where a line indicating the position of the current world record holder appears ahead of the competitors moving frantically through the water.

There are 2 sides to AR, the first being the business opportunity and the other being the end user. Imagine being in Piccadilly Circus and wondering which street you walk up. By holding up your smartphone you will see billboards, restaurant names, shops etc and by clicking on each image

By Tony Sim, from Neater Heater IT IS very obvious the more customers we deal with, that, in this economical climate, people are rightly concerned about getting value for their money when buying heaters. The main question is: “Why Neater Heaters and not another type?

I can only think of reassuring people that Richard and I both started out as consumers ourselves. My first winter, I think, reflects the experiences of most people.

Having survived the initial shock of our first cold-snap in Spain, Cathy and I realised that winters here were serious and that we needed to defend ourselves better against them.

Like most people, we started with Gas Estuffas which I wasn’t too happy about as they stipulate that they should be used in a well ventilated area. We then looked into central heating, and soon realised that the installation cost was too much for us. That left electric heaters. We investigated the lot, and tried a few. It became obvious that the mediocre-to-good ones were seriously expensive and that the ones we could afford were seriously rubbish.

Anyway, we eventually installed an electric heater in our son´s bedroom. It was a flat paint-able panel that was pitched to us as being a heater that was very economical to run. Neither of these statements was correct. I certainly wouldn’t call it a heater, and that fact alone made whether-or-not it was economical irrelevant!!! My son’s room was too cold for him to concentrate for long on his homework, so he had to do it in the living room

disturbing us in the process.

Then we accidentally discovered these super Norwegian Heaters made by BEHA. We put one in my son’s room and it was lifechanging for me, let alone him. He no longer felt as if he was being banished to an igloo, and I could now watch telly because he was doing his homework – in his room! As for the cost of running them? They were actually cheaper to run than the “Eco” heaterthat-wasn’t-a-heater that was now on the tip.

Very soon we were asked to get some for our friends Richard and Nikki, then my mate Hugh wanted some, then Nikki’s brother..... soon we realised we had our hands on something that lots of people wanted, but didn’t even know existed. That was when Richard and I had our Victor Kiam moment. Remember him? “I was so impressed I bought the Company!” The rest, as they say........is History.

Feed the soil and not the plants by

THE BEST present you can give any new plants you buy or grow from cuttings or seeds this spring is to improve the soil before you plant them. This is important for flowering plants, herbs, flowering and fruiting shrubs and trees and vegetables whether grown in the open garden or in containers of various types and sizes.

Improvement entails adding sand to open up heavy clay soils, composts and peat to improve the water absorbing capacity and humus content and well rotted wet or dried animal manures to enrich both clay and sandy soils.

Bags of worm compost, compost including sea weed from the eco parks in La Xara and Benissa are also useful soil improvers. If you have a very poor soil mix in 20 to 40% by volume of the above additives to the top 30 cms of soil for small plants and 60 cms for deep rooted shrubs and trees.

Mix up soil mixes for containers on a similar basis. Typical mixes are given in each of our books. Since writing the books we have come across and used.

If you do this the critical development of root balls will be accelerated, green growth will grow steadily and healthily and you will not need to resort to the use of fast acting chemical fertilizers to maintain plant growth. This has two benefits, Firstly you will not need to store potentially hazardous materials which is especially important if you have children and pets in the household.

Secondly you will not stimulate unnecessarily fast weak growth that is susceptible to attacks by pests and diseases.

There are four other soil additives worth considering namely Neem powder from Trabe www.trabe.net, Terracottem soil conditioner from www.terravida.com, Bioconsort fertilizer mix or Bioconsort enriched ground palm fibres from www.agroitems.com or Carmen@sojivit.com and sulphur powder. The first acts as a gentle fertilizer and controller of snails and slugs , the second improves the moisture holding capacity of the soil by reducing the extent and frequency of watering required, the third add trace elements and beneficial microbes as well as organic fertilizer while a light treatment with sulphur helps increase the acidity of neutral or alkaline soils.

If you have inherited a fully stocked garden with some plants that struggle to survive the summer or never really perform we suggest that you improve the soil around the plants down to the depth of the bottom of the root ball to improve their chances of long term survival and continuing good crops of flowers, fruit and vegetables. With fruit trees it’s often best to dig a circular trench around the existing root ball and improve the soil in the trench.

Luckily the soil is currently in good condition to carry out the above tasks. Do them manually using mattocks rather than spades and forks if you have a relatively small area of soil to prepare. If a larger area reduce the back aching work by buying a small rotovator or hiring the village mechanical plough. Or perhaps you are lucky that your village still has a working mule or donkey for hire.

A way of preserving rural practices, minimising the compression of the soil and with luck getting some free manure in the process.

Offer to give the animal a good feed before it starts to work – this might increase the extent of the manure bonus!

What is it?

The AVS30 is a 30 amp singe-phase, mains wired, electrical surge protector. The units are UK manufactured, which are imported, and are guaranteed for 12 months. The unit is a white, moulded plastic box, which is mounted on the wall above your main fuse box. It is wired in between the main supply circuit breaker and the output breakers, thus all the power for the property goes through the AVS unit - thereby giving 24 hour protection to every electrical item.

How does it work?

The unit has high and low voltage settings and it continuously monitors the incoming power supply. Provided the supply is within the pre-set limits there is no problem. However, if the

power exceeds these limits, either too high or too low, the unit will disconnect the power, preventing any possible damage. The unit will continue to monitor the voltage, and when it returns within the limits, the supply will automatically re-connect.

Power cuts Often, when there has been a power cut, there is a spike in the power during the re-connection. But because the AVS30 causes a slight 20 – 30 second monitoring delay on re-connection, any possible damage due to this cause is prevented and for a one-off cost of far less than the price of a flat screen television, you can protect all the electrical items in your home.

Rosemary for memory MARGO AND Richard Gay travelled from Costa Blanca South to give us a very interesting talk. Margo told many folk stories about our everyday herbs some of which are mentioned on Egyptian papyrus from 2000 years ago. There are 74 herbs which we can all grow in our own gardens. Culpepper’s Herbal in 1653 listed the beneficial properties of herbs eg. wear a sprig of rosemary in your hair as a memory aid.

We may see many of our ex-pats so adorned!!

In the second half of the meeting, Richard extolled the benefits of manure in the vegetable garden and was able to answer members’ questions on vegetable growing on the Costa Blanca.

Margo had many pots of her excellent preserves- all home made- for sale.

Oasis garden club ON THURSDAY 1st March we had our first meeting of the year at the Oasis Garden Club. The Club is now being run by Len Johnson, unfortunately Tina Burgess had to go back to England and we would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her work and support in the past. The discussion was based on nominating a small committee to help with the running of the club. There will be new ideas being submitted from members and hopefully we will arrange at some point in time to visit other places possibly arranging a coach which will be around the Valencia region. We normally meet the 1st Thursday of the month Our next meeting will be on 5th April time 10.30 a.m to 12.30pm, there is a joining fee of 5 euro’s p.a per household. We have suggested a plant swap for this month, but it is not compulsory also we will be having a garden quiz. We also would like to thank the new management of the Bar of the Oasis for allowing us to hold our meetings there.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

IF YOU think about the letter Y in English, it actually has a dual function. Sometimes it is a vowel, as in the word “pretty”, and sometimes it is a consonant, as in the word “yellow”.

If you think about it even more and listen carefully to how your mouth forms the sounds, you may even notice that the Y vowel and consonant in English are actually very similar. For example, if you were to say “iellow” instead of “yellow”, the sound would come out the same. A very similar relationship exists between the two uses of Y in Spanish. It can be a consonant, in which case it sounds like the English consonant Y, as in the word “ya” (now) or “yo” (I). In other instances the Y acts like a vowel, substituting the letter “i” as in the word for “and”, which consists of the single letter “y”.

The consonant Y sound is the same nowadays as the LL in Spanish, such as in the word “llave” meaning “key”. The exact sound ranges from being almost identical to the English Y through to an effect produced by light friction between the tongue and the roof of the mouth about half way towards an English J sound. In South American Spanish the sound can be like a full J, especially in Argentina and Uruguay where yo sounds like “jo” and “llave” sounds like “jave”.

Many English speakers find these variations in consonant sounds disconcerting as they strive to work out which sound is “correct”.

However, a range of light to hard in many Spanish consonants is quite admissible within the language. Conversely, the Spanish vowels have to be much more consistent than in English as they form the basis of the correct sound of each word.

There is a fair variety of words in Spanish that begin with the letter Y, although there are very few which have related words in the English language. Here are some that just about qualify: “yate”,

(yacht); “yip” (jeep); “yodo” (iodine); “yogur” (yoghurt). The letter Y is quite common at the ends of words, usually following other vowels, for example: “hay” (there is, there are), “buey” (ox), “soy” (I am).

Going back to our two most common Y words – “yo” and “ya”, I thought it would be useful to look at some frequent uses of these words in phrases. “Ya” means “now” or “already”, so we have: “¡Ya está!” (That’s it now!). “¡Ya entiendo!” (Now I understand!) “¡Basta ya!” (That’s enough now!) “Ya voy” (I’m going now, I’m on my way).

“Yo” means “I”, and here are some good ways to use it: “¿Yo qué sé?”.

(How should I know?) “Yo también”. (Me too). “Porque lo digo yo” (Because I say so). “Soy yo” (It’s me!)

Here is an assortment of other Y words and their meanings.

“Yedra” means “ivy” as in the plant, but I have never heard it used as a name. “Yema” means “yoke” and reminds me more than anything of that rich yellow variety of sweet “turrón” eaten by the Spanish at Christmas time. The pad or tip of one’s finger is also referred to as the “yema”. The last one of this strange assortment of ideas is the word “yegua” meaning “mare”. The word can also be used as an insult to a meaning something like “old slut”. Take my word for that one – don’t try it out!

It wasn’t too easy coming up with sayings containing Y words, but here is one which links to our earlier “I” theme: “Yo como tú y tú como yo, el diablo nos juntó.” “I’m like you, you’re like me, the devil brought us together”. Well you might not find the opportunity to say this everyday but you never know when it might come in handy.

ANOTHER BRILLIANT choice straight off Gil Gatoff’s extensive shelves of thrillers at Librería Europa is this week’s book for review.

Written by the multi-talented forensic examiner Patricia Cornwell in her fictional role as Massachusetts Chief Medical Examiner Dr Kay Scarpetta. Before reading this tale of US Department of Defence battlefield forensics and 3D radiology I’d suggest leaving the cork in the wine bottle to keep a clear head to deal with the concepts of nanobots and flybots. Flybots are evidently molecular versions of winged nanobots capable of burrowing into blood vessels and organs and delivering hallucinogenic drugs. The idea is that in wars of the future enemy forces will be rendered incapable of combat by drugs delivered by microartificial mosquito bites – but it all goes wrong when Dr Scarpetta’s deputy is murdered and the finger points to a military conspiracy. Miss Cornwell writes with authority, as well she should, and her detail of forensic procedures is so authentic that the reader feels he or she is standing next to her heroine, gowned and masked and ready to assist without fainting. An incisive read in more ways than one.

Stop bothering me, go read a book…

IF I’M not cooking or developing recipes, I am usually to be found with my head in a book doing research for them. But, I have only really ever read books for information and not necessarily or exclusively for enjoyment, so when I’m encouraged to read a book by Trudy I have a bit of trouble ‘getting into it’. So many characters to remember, who did what to whom and why, was Uncle Tom really on holiday or was it Mandy? Only to find the butler did it anyway. Perhaps it’s because I don’t like TV soaps and never have and as for those ebooks & Kindles… I still find it odd that something that apparently can hold so much has to come wrapped in a box.

So, I’ve started to read autobiographies as there is usually no real story line and not many characters to remember. One recently though left me a little disappointed and that was Morecambe and Wise and I was disappointed because they didn’t mention me once…let me explain.

Having left a hectic and very intense training period in a famous local restaurant near my home in Kent I understandably wanted to leave home, spread my wings and explore, so when a job came up at the BBC television centre together with accommodation I leapt at the chance and moved to London. What a breath of fresh air: shift work; eight hour working days; lunch breaks and days off as well; double pay on weekends and holidays.

Having started as a trainee I was soon doing double shifts and getting shift leader money and even acting Head Chef money within just a few weeks. The pay was brilliant and so were the perks despite the huge number of meals served every day over many restaurants. Free tickets to Top of The Pops and all the shows as well as including mixing with the stars in the various restaurants on site…

On the second floor where the real stars ate there was a glass box in the centre of the restaurant where a Chef (usually me) cooked steaks and omelettes to order in full view of the other diners. Eric Morecambe decided it looked his kind of thing and asked if he could have a go and then when we had exchanged jackets he further insisted that I go and sit with Ernie and by the way, what would I like to eat. What I genuinely thought was real interest in my job in the box quickly descended into chaos by way of an unseen force which I feel still haunts the BBC to this day.

who were worried and concerned for his safety and don’t forget “we have schedules you know…”

I really don’t know who got into the most trouble for this performance; I certainly got it from all quarters. Such an improvised moment at the time if possible to recreate would surely have made a hilarious spectacle to this day. A few years later I met Eric and Ernie at a theatre in Norwich where I was again catering and without so much as a pause for thought he asked if we ought to swap jackets again and then autographed my hat.

THE RED Cross began distributing a massive 730,000 kilos of food basics this week in a programme designed to help the most vulnerable people living in the Province of Alicante.

The aim of the handouts is to make available free quality basic food and while reducing a number of agricultural products held by a number of European Union agencies.Being given to the needy include dairy products, fruit juices, cereal products – such as pasts, biscuits and breakfast cereals – beef broth, cream of dehydrated vegetables, canned tomato sauce and rice.

According to the Red Cross the assistance is aimed at households with children or elderly dependents, single parents, people with physical or mental disabilities, the unemployed, homeless, battered women, immigrants and refugees.

Diabetic Foot Care – Why it’s Important As part of the campaign by the Family Medical Centre in Albir to raise the awareness of Diabetes and offering the first 100 callers a FREE DIABETES SCREENING TEST we look at an important aspect of Diabetic health care – the feet.

The importance of foot care for diabetics cannot be underestimated. Diabetics represent the biggest group of lower limb amputees, even greater than that of RTAs. But actually most diabetic amputations are avoidable.

Diabetes is an increase in circulating blood sugar levels; there are two types of Diabetes, Types I & II. Type I is known as ‘juvenile diabetes’ as the onset is usually in childhood or young adulthood. Type II is known as ‘mature onset diabetes’ & mainly starts in later life.

Both diseases are controlled differently; Type I requiring injections of insulin and Type II may be controlled by reducing sugar intake (diet) or drugs which help the body to use insulin better. Type II may eventually require the use of insulin too. Ultimately the disease causes the same problems to the body, especially if uncontrolled or poorly controlled. There is damage to small blood vessels particularly in feet, hands, eyes, kidneys and heart and damage to nerves.

Manifestations in the foot are largely threefold; poor circulation, nerve damage & poor healing following injury. If diabetes is well controlled it has a minimal effect on the body so controlling your blood sugar levels is vital.

Circulation can be affected by the hardening of the arteries; this makes it difficult for the blood to reach where it needs to go. If

the blood can’t get down there in sufficient quantity or quality, when an injury occurs it may be slow to heal or even ulcerate. If the ulceration is untreated it can get infected and if that infection is untreated it can turn to gangrene leading to amputation of the affected toe, foot or even leg. However there are many chances for intervention, from treating the original injury to treating the ulceration to treating the infection. It is better to treat the original injury early and avoid the complications of ulceration & infection.

Poor healing in diabetic feet means that injuries are often slow to heal so wounds stay open longer increasing the chances of getting infected and infections love sugar. The higher the blood sugar the more rapidly the infection can take hold.

So what can we do to avoid these problems? Plenty. Inspect the feet daily to ensure there are no injuries or changes in colour, inflammation or pain. Look at the bottom of the feet in a mirror if you have problems getting down there. Don’t walk barefoot it’s just asking for trouble. Wash the feet daily & dry between toes and apply moisturiser once dry, but not between the toes. Osteoarthritis in the neck and upper limbs WEIGHT BEARING joints are by far the most common in showing signs of osteoarthritis.

However trauma predisposes any joint to this condition. As I mentioned in my previous article on OA it is not aging that causes it but an end result of abnormal mechanical, inflammatory, or metabolical factors. An accident, such as a fracture, repeated strain, or a bad jolt will certainly be a format to OA. HANDS tend to be the most affected by OA. This is due to the fact that we obviously use them to a greater extent than other joints. If you think of all the varying angles of pressure we put on these small joints there’s no wonder they show signs of wear and tear in later life. Occupation plays a deciding factor. Myself for instance will be prone due to all the irregular pressures I have to use in manipulation and massage.

OA is easily identified in the hands. At the joint margins more bone is formed known as Heberden’s nodes. These tend to make their appearance after the age of 45.

The first joint of the thumb is commonly affected and obviously inhibits grip and grasping movements. Pain accompanies these changes but it burns out leaving the unsightly swellings.

ELBOWS rarely show OA except after trauma.

SHOULDERS are mostly affected by

soft tissue problems but again trauma will predispose it to OA. Physiotherapy in all cases is to reduce the inflammation and maintain movement where possible.

THE NECK OA in the neck is commonly referred to as cervical spondylitis, or spondylosis cervical being the name of the vertebrae of the neck and spondylitis being inflammation on the bony growths called spondyles, osteophytes or spurs.

This is an age related condition. It’s the wear and tear of everyday life.

The severity depends on occupation, sport, posture. The list is never ending. However carrying heavy weights or having strain on the neck for long periods of time are two of the main factors causing this problem.

Men and women suffer equally. House work can prove just as much strain as bricklaying!!

As the discs wear down the bones come closer together and react by forming more bone.

Depending where these spurs form determines the symptoms.

Symptoms vary in severity. A general aching is produced by pressure on the small

pain sensitive nerves which grow around the worn out area. However if a main nerve is pinched the pain is sharp electric shock like.

So symptoms can be an aching of the neck spreading down into the shoulders and between the shoulder blades or it could be a sharp pain going all the way down the arm to the fingers. Pins and needles in the hand and also numbness occurs.

The pain also varies enormously. Some people complain of constant pain while others have it from time to time. Problems occur by a sudden jolt or twist, or carrying a heavy object.

TREATMENT AND MANAGEMENT Physiotherapy is helpful in the acute phase. Improvement may take several weeks

depending on the severity. It is important to seek help during this phase as it is the inflammation which causes the initial damage.

Over enthusiastic manipulation on the neck is not advised and can even be dangerous causing further nerve and spinal damage.

Cervical spondylosis often produces recurrent episodes of pain. Self management is very important 1. Avoid sudden movement and prolonged stressful positions.

2. Correction of posture is important.

3. Sensible use of collar.

4. Gentle mobility exercises in pain free range.

5. When acute see your physiotherapist for help.

6. Use anti inflammatory drugs prescribed by your doctor.

Life charity Auction aids Africa Children helped by ACACIA

By Jack Troughton JAVEA INTERNATONAL Baptist Church raised 600€ at an auction in aid of ACACIA, Aiding Children and Communities in Africa.

The event was organised by Ruth Crooks, a member of the church and a personal friend of ACACIA missionaries Sarah and Graham Giles, helped by John Blakeman, auctioneer for the day, which brought the gavel down on bids for a number of lots ranging from teacups to a glass trilby.

As part of the ACACIA project, Sarah and Giles are working in Zimbabwe improving the ability of local churches to help orphans and vulnerable children with physical, mental,

emotional, spiritual and social needs.

The mission also raises HIV and AIDS awareness and support, farming food and nutrition, develops leadership and skills and helps establish multi-purpose community buildings. The church has supported ACACIA for the past five years providing school equipment and funding for food and clothes and will continue its funding over 2012.

Ladies Day funds building work ANIMAL CHARITY APASA held a Ladies Day on Wednesday to help boost funds for building new isolation kennels at the charity’s Javea shelter. Beauty treatments, gifts, jewellery, were just some of the attractions at Bar Mediterraneo in Teulada as the appeal continues to its 18,000€ target, with 8,625€ collected so far.

the draw was made at a little “get together” to thank Eileen Mackenzie and people who helped out on the day of the sale. She added the success of the events was “an incredible boost to our funds.” The charity now faces ‘kitten season’ and was already picking up a number of pregnant cats. “We still have several cats and kittens needing new homes before the first lot of new cute kittens arrive.”

I´M NOT a ´Dancing on Ice´ fan but I can’t help but admire the pluck of the various celebs that have a go at something so difficult. And difficult it was for Emmerdale actor Mathew Wolfenden who had all sorts of problems last week when it came to the rehearsing of a Lion taming sequence for the show. Being the professional that he is and wanting to get into character Mathew sadly made the mistake of not checking how long the whip was that he was brandishing, and in the process of cracking it caught himself in the naggers, not once, not twice but three times!! … yes!! … three times Mathew whipped himself heavily in the family jewels area. According to The Sun he was then sent off to whip cracking training to spare his privates any more punishment! A source close to Mathew said “It would´ve been alright if it had happened once, but after three times he was in serious pain!” … and talking in a high pitched voice as well I´d imagine.

Let’s hope he doesn´t have to change his name to Martha Wolfenden.

A Bright Star… I Don’t Think So! AND SO we arrive at Reality Show bashing time again. But firstly let me apologise for bringing such a tired old item to my column as the story of Lydia Bright´s disgusting behavior in a kebab shop recently is well-documented, but I couldn’t help but want to wallow in the fact that I have been banging on about these dreadful programmes, and the people in them since I was first here at RTN. The headline to the story read ´TOWIE´ Star Lydia Bright … blah blah blah … NO!! … where does the word star come from?... She´s not a star she´s just some unpleasant person who went on the hiss with a few other … stars … got absolutely out of her brains then went into a kebab shop and started arguing the toss with the security guard, pointing her finger in his face and calling him all sorts of names. In an interview with online newspaper Metro she said “I´m not a ladette Chav” … oh yes you are young lady … oh yes you are … Then the next day after sleeping off the excess of alcohol she consumed she tweeted “I´m only normal and I like a night out, but I´ve learnt my lesson … sorry” … Lydia Bright got one part of that tweet dead right. I´m only normal … yes my lovely that’s what you are … only normal, and not a star, and after your behavior in the kebab shop perhaps you could now do us all a favour and set light to TOWIE and all the other so called Reality shows while you´re at it.

Porkie or no porkie!

ONE OF the most important skills to have for the people who climb up out of the basement and become high profile individuals is the ability to deny having said something, even although it’s likely that you did, and be convincing when you do the denying. Our second Mathew of the day Mathew Morrison of ´Glee’ fame is one such individual who has had to deal with this very scenario just recently, and I´m not so sure it’s gone terribly well for the fellow. Last week a periodical in the US suggested he called Kelly Brook ´Dim´ and the following morning Mathew woke up to shed loads of e-mails on the subject. Switching instantly into deny mode, and even delaying having his soft boiled egg and soldiers, Mathew tweeted “Wow! … woke up to a flurry of e-mails regarding Kelly Brook! … Don’t always believe what you read … Kelly is a wonderful person and a good friend”. And so to the ¨Dim´ statement and why it appeared in the press. A week or so before apparently Mathew was at a party in LA and reportedly told the Daily Mirror “I went out with Kelly Brook but I didn´t realise she was tabloid fodder! … She´s not exactly the brightest bulb! … We went on only one date!” … So!! … Does Mathew think Kelly´s wonderful or does he think she´s a numb nuts! … It’s your call.

Gatecrash GATECRASH IS one of the main musical groups performing at the Moraira Saint Patricks Festival on the 16th, 17th and 18th of March. This is a multi-national mix of young talented Spanish, German and Irish musicians. To celebrate the Saint Patricks Festival GATECRASH have selected some of the best Irish pop, rock and folk, performed in their unique style, including The Pogues, The Cranberries, U2, Imelda May, The Dubliners, Van Morrison etc. This Moraira festival is not to be missed, and in particular GATECRASH promise to deliver a real sense of what the Saint Patricks Festival is all about “ceol agus craic”, that is gaelic for music and fun. Niamh, the lead singer from Dublin, is very excited about her bands participation, in what promises to be a fun-filled week-end with a real irish flavour.

Festival earns encore Celtic Knot FOR THE smaller venues participating in the festival, Niamh will be performing an acoustic guitar set with the renowned Matthias Coblenzer. This duo call themselves Celtic Knot. She will focus on singing traditional Irish ballads and folk music.

The Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir

By Jack Troughton THE SWEEPING success of the International Choir Festival on the Costa Blanca has led to hopes the event can be repeated next year.

Three English-speaking choirs took part in the festival, based at Alfaz del Pi and surrounding towns, earlier this month, including the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir.

The celebration was organised by the Norwegian Coral Association and Alfaz Town Hall and three choirs travelled from Norway and three Spanish groups also took part.

Director Erland Dalen hopes a similar festival can be staged next year and again feature signing in a variety of languages.

Emergency Shelter thanks WIBC Chris Duffin, President of the Women in Business Club, visited an emergency shelter in Verger on Thursday 8 March to meet Rema Sendra Mengual, President of Asociación de Ayuida a Victimas de Violencia Doméstica y de Género.

WIBC presented them with a computer, curtains, curtain poles and bedding to help furnish an apartment that is the property of Ajuntament Del Verger. The apartment is used as an emergency shelter for women and their children who have been forced to flee their homes.

WIBC also presented new clothing for the mothers and toys for the children. These families often have to leave their homes with only the clothes they stand up in under highly traumatic circumstances. They are now able to stay in the apartment for 24 hours until their paperwork has been processed and they can be re-housed in a safe environment.

Also present were the Mayor of El Verger, Alcalde Miguel Gonzalez Baňo, Concetal Manuel Reyes Moya, Angel Antonio Lopez León (treasurer) and Pilar Vidal Lillo (vice-president) of the association, Candy Wright (secretary, WIBC) with Maria Verrecchia-Norman (membership secretary) as well as committee members Liz Yardley and Maria Soler.

Life tech Removing contacts

Ray via email asks: HI AUNTY, could you advise please on how to remove email contacts from the list.

When I bring up all contacts it is easy to remove those I don’t want but then how do I remove them from the drop down list?

Aunty Says: This will depend on which email client you are using Ray. If you use a local email program that is installed on your computer, such as Outlook or Incredimail, you can normally delete entries in the stored drop down list by highlighting the name and pressing the del key (you may need to use the up and down arrow keys to navigate through the list). If you access your email using webmail through your browser, such as Yahoo, Gmail or Hotmail, you will need to select one of the options under your account settings, or in the case of Gmail, an automatic process when you remove the entry from your address book. As there are too many different variants to list here, you will need to explore the account setting options of your particular email provider or send me details of how you access your email and I will investigate.

Starting again Maureen via email asks: DEAR AUNTY, I am having a few problems with my new laptop which I hope you can solve for me. I have acquired a ‘babylon search’ which I cannot get rid of. I have deleted it from my programs and it has gone from my Internet Explorer but is still appearing on my Mozilla Firefox. I re-downloaded Firefox but it is still there. I have looked for a solution on the internet but my menu bar has disappeared, so I cannot click on tools. Secondly I now have Windows Live Mail instead of Outlook Express! Is there any way I can transfer my contacts or do I have to copy these in one by one. I still have the hard drive from my old computer and an external hard drive. Sorry I have so many problems, I used to be able to cope with my old computer but I feel I am starting from the beginning again.

Aunty Says: You seem to have completed the first stage in removing the horrendously intrusive Babylon search program Maureen, but you will need to also remove it as an ‘add-on’ from Firefox. If you don’t see the menu bar along the top of Firefox you can have it appear permanently by right clicking on the small Firefox icon just to the left of the address bar (where you would normally type www.) and tick the Menu Bar option. If you just want to bring up the ‘add-on manager’ temporarily you can hold down Ctrl and Shift and press the letter ‘a’ key. The Add on Manager is where you can remove or disable any extensions/add-ons that may be interfering with your system, and it is a good idea to check it now and then as it’s frightening how many add-ons can find their way onto your computer, and they will nearly always affect your internet speed. You may also need to set your homepage back to something trustworthy, such as Google.com or Yahoo.com, which you can access from ‘tools’ ‘options’ on the menu bar. Windows Mail replaced Outlook Express as the email client bundled with Vista & Win7 and I will cover this in the next issue.

Emails have reversed Joan via email asks: HI AUNTY, somehow my emails have reversed.

I need the newest one first. I am using yahoo email and have Windows Vista. There is a little yellow star on the top right hand corner of the emails, which I click on but it when I switch off it goes back to the oldest one first. I am not sure how this has happened but would appreciate you help in correcting it.

Aunty Says: I don’t use Yahoo mail June but I’m pretty sure you can sort each column by clicking on the column header, in your case the ‘date’ one. To make descending order is set as the default go to the ‘Yahoo Mail Classic’ options. Choose ‘options’ from the Yahoo navigation bar and click on the ‘general preferences’ link. Check that ‘message ordering’ is set to descending by date and save the changes.

Deli shift THERE IS no place like a New York Deli, but can Spirit work there? I think so. It worked for me, amongst the pastrami and rye, the turkey and the coleslaw and the best Rueben sandwich in town.

Irene was a wonderful waitress. You know, the type of waitress who just knows what you want and what to do to serve your right. Having given my order she checked it wasn’t going to be too much for me or my companion. New York is the land of the giant portion, and this speciality Jewish eatery didn’t ever see a clean plate, and had the doggie bags ready. Irene took great pleasure in serving me my sandwich, she was mindful of the sauces that I would want, and re filled my ice tea on the spot. All in all a professional waitress doing a great job, and at 2.30 in the morning too.

Still something was not right with Irene that night, and I knew it. Sometimes I wish I didn’t but something was wrong. I wondered whether I would get the chance to speak to her, when mid sandwich she actually sat down and started eating on her break, and I got my chance. She poured her heart out to me. Told me that times were hard and that the grand age of 62 she had started this job on the graveyard shift as a waitress on Seventh Avenue. What I saw as a professional waitress was in fact a woman who had served her family slavishly for many a year, taking nothing back for herself and making life easy for her husband and kids. Still what else was wrong? Exhausted and crying herself to sleep after every shift both her children had added to the stress by telling her they were appalled she had become a waitress and were not supporting her in any way. In actual fact they had turned their back on her, at a time when she really needed tender loving care, there was despair, emptiness and low self esteem. I spoke to Irene’s soul that night. Having paid my bill, snatched a doggybag, left a good tip, and stepped out into the cold morning Irene came running after me, her coat worn over her starched white uniform with the embroidered handkerchief that revealed her name, and her purse under her arm.

She told me that she thought that I had spoken to her heart, said that she had never met anyone like me, and that she had a warm, but strange feeling within. As we walked towards Times Square the taxis were passing on wet streets as late night revellers left bars and restaurants. I

walked with Irene to the subway and we talked and talked. I told her the truth, that if she were my Mother I would be proud of her taking on such a job to help the family income. I praised her sincerely for a job well done and told her that I was always going to be an email away if she needed me, always. There were tears in her eyes as she took the Queen’s bound 7 train back home. She didn’t know what to say to me, but I knew that she would make contact someday, and I trusted that Spirit would reward her all along the line because she deserved it. As her subway car sped off she waved to me and I crossed platform and returned to my hotel.

Next day after breakfast I had clients, but I checked my schedule and my emails. One message stood out. It was from Irene, and it simply said, “No tears last night, Thank you, Irene.” I knew that something had happened, hoped that Irene would go from strength to strength and that all would be well.

How many times do we stop ourselves from getting involved when we know that whatever we can say or do will make a difference? What can mean very little to us can be very special to someone who needs it, whether it is sent as a smile, a wave, a kiss or a message. There is always someone who will need your tender loving care, and I have learned that those who really do need help are often the very last in the queue!

A Christmas Card arrived from Irene. She wrote over the whole card, and so much seems to be happening that she is starting to see the meaning of her life. I only told her the truth, and that was that this was time for her and if it felt good then she should go for it. She had done her trial at the Deli, been put on the day shift, thus was able to travel more safely than at night, and had received a raise. Everything seemed to be going right, and I was delighted for her.

What was very much strangers in the night when we met has become one woman’s determined need to just be herself at all times.

We are a few more emails along the line too, and all goes well.

Happiness can be so simple, don’t make it difficult and never underestimate what you can do to make someone somewhere smile. Like me you’ll be smiling along too!

You told me something that I wasn’t able to connect with at the time, but I have to tell you that you were right all along. You told me that I had a brother in Spirit, and I told you that it wasn’t possible. Last month my Mother died and in the days before her passing she confided in me, and told me that her baby son in Spirit may be there for her. She did indeed lose a child!

Sally H. Sally, I am so glad that you got back to me. I do make mistakes but not usually when Spirit shows me those who have passed over. Your baby brother was alive and well then, if I managed to pick up on him, let’s hope he will survive until he is reunited with his Mother. They have been parted for many years. Above all it was good that your Mother was able to care and share with you before she departed for the Other Side. May God bless you all, and thank you for not forgetting me, it means such a lot, not to be proved right, but to be remembered.

Life cars Regulations for carrying in the back seat

Dear Brian, I WONDERED if you could help me? I have a friend travelling down into Andalusia from the UK in June, towing his caravan. He has contacted me as he has ‘heard’ that, “Recent changes in Spanish regulations prohibit the carriage of anything in the rear seats, other than seat-belted passengers, with a hefty fine for anyone not complying”. He usually uses the rear seats as additional luggage space when their dog is in the boot space. Have you heard anything regarding this matter?

For your friend. As long as the maximum authorised weights for the vehicles areas has not exceeded remembering any luggage in the boot, there can be no problems as long as the luggage on the seats is securely “tied down” (using the seat belts and/or ISOFIX mountings for the child seats) so in the event of a crash the luggage does not shoot forward and injure the driver, etc. The police must be happy with such an arrangement but remember that newer cars have sensors on the seats where if there is a weight on it, a beeper will keep making a noise until the belts are clipped into place.

THE VEGA Baja Golf League is one on the most efficiently run golf organisations I have come across in our part of Spain and deserves to be the success it is. Their booking system is one that many golf societies follow with all reservations made by email in

advance and prices agreed for the year ahead so that a program of events can be issued to their members for the year ahead.

This season as with other seasons they will use a number of golf courses in the Murcia area to hold the league meetings. With 128 players turning out over a two day period their reservations are business that you would think should be much sought after by golf course managers. Not it seems by those involved in a golf course management company in Murcia who has on a number of occasions already this season let the VBGL down with bookings. At €6,400 per booking this seems hard to believe in the current economic climate.

The organisers of The Vega Baja Golf League provided RTN with a staggering amount of documentation that confirms mismanagement of their business on a scale that is mind boggling. It was fully my intention to name and shame the golf courses concerned and the individuals working for the golf management company involved but if readers saw who they were they would probably boycott the courses concerned and they would suffer even more hardship than these tough economic times are giving the golf industry at the moment.

Perhaps the lesson to be learned here is that we are still dealing with a number of idiots at golf course management companies and that we need to teach them some harsh lessons for them to provide what they are paid stupid sums of money to do, manage golf courses. I urge all who deal with the idiots who are ruining our golf courses to put as much pressure on these people as possible so that we can eventually get some level of service into our golf courses. No wonder so many are virtually bankrupt!

THE PROFESSIONAL SCENE

The second of The WGC Championships of the year at Doral Resort in Florida produced a great deal of excitement right from the off last weekend. The famous Blue Monster course had some players pulling their hair out on Thursday as a squall passed over the course. Sergio Garcia went from 3 under par to 3 over par in just a few holes and was perhaps the biggest loser as he played himself quickly out of the tournament on the very first day.

The new World Number one Rory McIllroy seemed to be suffering from vertigo atop the rankings during the early part of the event but as time went by he found a way to cope with his new status and went on to finish just two shots off the lead come Sunday evening.

Justin Rose was the man who bloomed as he win the biggest event of his career so far and

his fifth European Tour event after a final round of 70.

Starting the day one adrift of big hitting Bubba Watson Rose did things the hard way as he finished with a bogey on his last hole and had to endure a time sweating on the results and wondering if he had blown the biggest cheque of his career so far. He need not have worried as after Watson hit his approach from the rough to around nine feet he missed the birdie that would have forced extra time.

Almost as big as Rose winning was the return to injury of Tiger Woods who cited a damaged Achilles as the reason for his withdrawal after eleven holes.

The 2012 European Tour comes to mainland Europe for the first time this season as we see five Major Champions seek to win The Open De Andalucía over the Aloha course in Marbella.

the first time in twelve years. He will be joined

by Paul Lawrie, Jose Maria Olazabal, Michael Campbell and Rich Beem. The inclusion of the PGA Tour players again confirms the strength of European Tour golf.

Paul Lawrie won this event last year when it was played over The Parador Course in Malaga and will find the course at Aloha a much different proposition. This event has never been won by a Spaniard so this year they will be trying very hard to put that right over a golf course that will test accuracy over distance and maybe the time is right for the tournament host Miguel Angel Jimenez to win his own event if he can get the putter to behave a bit better than it has in recent weeks.

Lloyds Bank International Golf League 2012

EL PLANTIO played host to the third of our Lloyds Bank International Golf League last Tuesday and we had the best turnout of the season so far to test their skills over one of the area’s most popular golf clubs.

The overall competition was a keenly fought affair with Steve Edwards bringing in the best score of the day to win The Lebeche Division by one point from Vic Smith. Heinz Rottwilm won The Levante Division from Michael Vesey.

Both Divisions won by just one point.

It’s a huge shame that Britain’s success at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Istanbul has been somewhat overshadowed by the ‘Plastic Brit’ storylines as produced by the Daily Mail. For those of you who aren’t regular Daily Mail readers (and to be fair, who on earth is ever going to admit to that) some of their star writers having been hugely critical of UK Athletics over the past couple of weeks, unhappy with the

make up of the British team.

What got the likes of Martin Samuel and Jonathan McEvoy hot under the collar was the inclusion of such athletes as Yamile Aldama, Tiffany Porter, Shara Proctor and Shana Cox. First off, let’s be clear here. UKA broke no rules in selecting any of them and all qualify to compete for Great Britain under current international guidelines. Despite having already appeared for Cuba and Sudan, Aldama qualifies through residency. Porter has an English mother and has held a British passport since birth. Cox’s parents were both born in London and still reside there while Proctor also has a British passport and is unable to compete for the country of her birth as Anguilla doesn’t have a National Olympic Committee.

None of this though satisfied the Mail. At a press conference in Turkey, McEvoy asked Porter if she knew the words to the national anthem while athletics correspondent Neil Wilson wrote that he wouldn’t stand for the anthem if Porter won gold (as it happens, she took silver). Meanwhile, Samuel even tried to defend the paper when it was pointed out that the Mail orchestrated the transfer of Zola Budd from South Africa to the UK back in the 1980’s. Samuel’s response was “Times change. People change. Views change”. Really? Rojales netball club off to winning start LAST SATURDAY saw the Rojales Netball Club travel away to Alfaz del Pi Netball Club to play their first competitive match of 2012.

The fishing is still patchy, but “The Wizard” manages to find the fish each match, and this week winning once again making it the 5th match on the run he has won.

I have stood behind and watched him and I seem to be doing exactly the same, there is no doubt he is an excellent matchman.

ANGLERS TOGETHER The objective of Anglers Together has been reached (which was to introduce anglers to each other). Now that newcomers to Spain are few and far between, we have decided that monthly meetings are serving no useful purpose and the friendships that have been made over the past 4 years are now firmly established.

FC Torrevieja news

LAST SUNDAY Torry played at home to 4th placed Muro CF and suffered a 2-1 defeat. Torry had the ball in the net after 30 seconds but the goal was ruled out. After 12 minutes they conceded a goal direct from a free-kick which was played into the mix which keeper Manolo should have claimed. Torry had territorial advantage but were too open at the back and after 2 near misses Muro doubled their lead after poor defending by Meijide and Jorge. Manu scored a consolation goal 4 minutes before the end. On Sunday Torry are at home again against 2nd top Levante B in a 5.00 pm showdown.
