COST CUTTING helped a Costa Blanca town hall move its finances back into the black after the economic crisis was faced head on, residents were told. Teulada Moraira was in a better position than many local authorities across Spain, said Mayor Antoni Bertomeu: “Many of whom have serious problems.” English-speaking residents packed a meeting with the mayor and members of his government team last week at the Salon Canor to hear the latest news from the town hall. Mr Bertomeu warned property taxes would have to rise by 10% following an order from Marino Rajoy’s government in Madrid. But he reassured residents: “The taxes we pay in Teulada Moraira are amongst the lowest in the Province of Alicante – we do have the possibility of raising these, however, we have decided not to raise them in 2012 because people and businesses are experiencing a very difficult time this year. “This is why we have decided to continue along the same lines of the past few years – based on reducing expenses in all areas of the budget.” He said along with cutting costs, the increase in IBI ordered by the government, income from the sale of municipal owned plots of land for housing, and a refund of taxes paid

on building the auditorium in Teulada “allow us to make a balanced budget for 2012.” Mr Bertomeu said over the last four years town hall coffers had moved from a deficit to a surplus – in 2008, the start of the crisis, Teulada Moraira was 193,000€ in the red. The meeting was told in 2009 it increased to a deficit of 1.21 million euros, the overdraft was cut to 263,000€ in 2010 and moved into the black in 2011 to the tune of 63,000€. “This has been possible because we took action immediately the crisis began and in 2009 we began to apply austerity measures and strict control of public expenditure – a policy we have maintained in 2010 and 2011.” The mayor said the town hall was legally obliged to raise property taxes and hoped the changes would help the local economy next year. “We hope the financial situation will improve for people and businesses.” However, the mayor warned to maintain services next year there was “no alternative” but to utilise income based on the increase in property taxes and raising vehicle and other public taxes. He said the income would not only “maintain the quality of our services” but also improve roads, fund projects to help residents and boost the local economy.

Froilan with King Juan Carlos

by jan gamm FELIPE JUAN Froilan, King Juan Carlos’ oldest grandchild aged 13, is recovering in Chiron hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the foot with a 36-gauge hunting rifle while indulging in a spot of Easter target practice with his father on a farm in Soria on Monday. The boy’s mother, the Infanta Elena, spent the night in hospital with her son and he was visited by Queen Sofia on Tuesday. Spanish law forbids children under the age of 14 to use firearms with questions now being raised as to whether the parents should be held legally accountable for the child’s injury.

More hours for fear of losing the job EIGHT OUT of ten professionals are working more hours than they are paid for in their job roles because they believe they might otherwise lose their positions. Some perform on a longer work schedule as a result of other staff members leaving due to the economic crisis. Only 15% of workers admitted they do not work longer hours than expected, representing a 40% increase since 2010. There are also fewer absentees due to ill health, according to an analysis performed in 2007 and again in 2011.

BRITISH PRIME Minister David Cameron is considering new regulations that will restrict children’s viewing of certain music videos. Graphic music videos are currently exempt from classification under the Video Recordings Act of 1984 which means that kids can download and view material deemed to be suitable only for over fifteens. Cameron is considering new

rules that would oblige websites hosting such videos to introduce robust age verification systems similar to those used to safeguard children from online gambling. Although YouTube asks viewers to confirm they are aged of 18 before watching certain videos, Vevo does not do so: Rihanna’s ‘S&M video’ has been viewed more than 37 million times on Vevo alone by users, including minors.

What a load of rubbish by JAck troughton

CALPE TOWN Hall has cut ties with controversial rubbish collection company Colsur SL as rubbish again mounts up on the mountainside just outside the holiday town. Mayor Cesar Sanchez terminated the contract with the company responsible for sorting and transporting waste from the plant on the Serra d’Olta – accusing Colsur of “repeated” breaches of the terms of the agreement and poor performance. The town council and the company are already caught up in the infamous Brugal corruption court case – the local authority maintaining it has overpaid to have waste ferried away to the tune of 9 million euros. Former Mayor Javier Morato signed the contract with Colsur in 1998. The politician and three former town hall colleagues are accused of taking backhanders to sign off inflated invoices from the company. In a brief light-hearted moment in the saga, the weighbridge used to monitor loads leaving the site was found to be broken. RTN was told the equipment was still out of service. The case centres on claims the tonnage of waste removed by Colsur from the plant was falsely increased in a costly scam.

Rubbish at the Colsur plant

Last summer council and company went head to head – resulting in a mountain of rubbish accumulating on the site, supposedly protected land. The stand-off ended and the site was cleared, but since then Colsur’s performance has been monitored. In Calpe, rubbish bins are emptied by another company Aciona and transported to the plant every night. Colsur’s was supposed to take the waste each night to various destinations depending on the nature of the partly recycle material. However, the town hall has accused the company of failing to comply with its duties – one town hall insider said: “Rubbish is mounting up again – it is almost like an open air landfill site. The

stench is incredible.” According to councillors the growing rubbish mountain is both a fire risk in the heavily wooded area and a health hazard. Mixed together in the piles of waste, which are supposed to be sorted, are domestic rubbish, old mattresses and domestic appliances, and garden refuse. Mayor Sanchez said the local authority had acted to “defend the interests of Calpe residents and how their taxes are spent.” He said the council had taken legal advice to prevent any legal challenge to terminating the contract and it is understood compensation might be sought from Colsur for breach of contract and its alleged failures.

MAJOR RUSSIAN tour operator Vremya has produced a brochure expounding the delights of a holiday in Spain and highlighting sunny Benidorm and the Costa Blanca as the main attractions on the front and back covers. The brochure is available all points of sale within Russian travel agencies that work with Vremya. According to the Councillor for Tourism, Lola Johnson, occupation of Benidorm this Easter reached between 80 and 90% capacity.

Social networks targeted by new criminal reforms

Police restraining demonstrators

by jan gamm REFORMS TAKING place within the Criminal Code are to include penalties for inciting riot via a mobile telephone in addition to the usual punishments presently in place for assaulting a police officer, throwing dangerous objects and creating public disorder. The Spanish Penal Code presently allows for a penalty of one to six years imprisonment for an attack against public authority, with the maximum sentence applied, along with a monetary fine, if the victim is a politician or a judge. Adjustments will refer to both and active involvement in public demonstrations organised via Facebook and Twitter.

The Ps and Qs of La Toba

THE MAYOR of La Toba, a small village located 70 miles northeast of Madrid, has made himself unpopular by issuing a series of good conduct guidelines to local residents that include bans on slurping food in public; nose picking; belching; breaking wind; touching genitals and failing to visit grandparents. There are no punishments for infringements but breaking the rules will be “frowned upon.” A total of 65 rules on seemly public behaviour incited the local population to call for Mayor Julian Atienza Garcia’s resignation after he published his new ‘courtesy charter’ in the village newsletter.

Manpower rescues hiker THE STRENGTH of the Mountain Rescue Service was put to the test over the Easter weekend when four troopers carried an injured hiker off the Sierra de Bernia. by jack troughton The team, employed by the Benidorm Fire Service, took turns to carry a stretcher and the 35-year-old woman, who had been injured walking in the ‘Forat’ area of the mountain, near Altea. Cuts grounded the Alicante rescue helicopter in January and despite requests for air support, the Valencia chopper was unavailable. Hot weather and narrow pathways failed to deter the team who said they were trained rescuers ready to use any means to help others – although it was admitted the effort was complicated by the lack of a helicopter.

The woman was carried to the nearest accessible point and ferried by ambulance to Villajoyosa Hospital. She had suffered an ankle injury. The emergency helicopter service in Alicante ended in January when the provincial government decided not to renew its contract. While operational, the chopper had been called out on average three times a week, mainly to rescue people walking and climbing in the mountains, to aid road traffic victims and to transfer injured people between hospitals.

Accident blackspot claims victim A NOTORIOUS level crossing in the centre of Villajoyosa witnessed another collision between a car and the FGV Tram last weekend. Fortunately no-one was hurt. The crossing has become an accident blackspot after more than a dozen incidents involving rail and road traffic after barriers were removed in 2008 and replace with traffic lights.

‘Hello boys!’ ad crashes

by Jack Troughton CENSORS HAVE covered up a saucy ad on a busy Costa Blanca road after fears that goggleeyed drivers would become involved in accidents. The titillating billboard next to a roundabout just outside Gata de Gorgos advertised an on-line strip club and featured a scantily clad model. However, unlike the famous 1994 Wonderbra advert starring Czech supermodel Eva Herzigova, she was photographed without underwear – prompting a health and safety intervention. As a result the offending parts of female anatomy have been covered over in plain white. In the short time the model was shown in all her glory, she had become something of a local talking point as people kept abreast of current affairs.

Turbulent times for tourism by jack troughton

TOURISTS CHIEFS forecast a 2.9 million fall in numbers of holidaymakers following a hike in airport taxes – while government figures predict a small increase in visitors. The Spanish Tourist Board Alliance for Tourism Excellence, Exceltur, has called an average of 10% jump in duty “disproportionate” and believes it could result in 2.87 million fewer Spanish and foreign tourists using the country’s airports. However, the body’s gloomy outlook is based purely on the increase in Spanish taxes as announced in the 2012 budget, yet Air Passenger Duty in Britain, a key market for holidays in Spain, has also been increased by Chancellor George Osborne. Passengers leaving the UK face a higher ‘departure’ tax despite already paying the highest duty in Europe for air travel. Exceltur members believe the fall in visitors will shrink a market vital to Spain’s economy and result in the loss of billions of

euros in 2012. The group believes more than 100,000 less tourists passing through Alicante’s El Altet Airport where airport taxes are due to rise by nearly 13%. Madrid and Barcelona airports were the worst hit, the envisioned tax hikes for the pair are more than 50%. FUEL The soaring price of fuel has already drastically reduced margins and airlines have warned the increased taxes will have to be passed on to passengers by raising ticket prices. Government statistics show an expected growth in the tourist market in 2012 – with 25 million people visiting Spain in the first six months of the year, an increase of 1.3% over 2011. Over the full year, Madrid believes there will be 56.7 million international visitors, up 0.2% on last year, and spending will increase by 3.1% to 54,400 million euros. The

2,000€ for a month to watch the grass grow! THE LANDSCAPING company Husqvarna is offering applicants for the job of ‘turf vigilante’ 2,000€ during the month of May to monitor a fully automatic robotic lawn mower set up in a park in Madrid. The successful candidate for the position dubbed ‘the best job this spring’ will be aged between 25 and 35, have a competent knowledge of social networks, enjoy sunbathing and live in Madrid. He (or she) will be required to check emails and post experiences on Twitter and Facebook. Since registration for selection opened on 27th March, 400 people have applied for the job.

A quiet Alicante airport

report by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism showed 9.2 million tourists arrived in the first quarter, 3.2% up on January to March last year. The government believes there will be a “moderate” growth in visitor numbers over

the year despite the domestic tourist market shrinking. But the report also warned caution should be exercised in its forecast, acknowledging demand for Spanish holidays could be affected by government measures to solve the current debt crisis.

Naturist beach closed by Jack Troughton BATHERS BRAVING rock falls to swim at Javea’s naturist beach have been warned they do so at their own risk. Javea Town Hall closed the access road to Ambolo Beach in September 2006 because of landslides caused by erosion. However, people still climb fences and ignore warning signs to get to the isolated bay and its crystal clear waters – dozens were seen over the Easter Holiday. The town hall, hoping to find a solution to the instability of the cliffs, said recent rains have caused new problems with falling rocks and warned anyone using the access road that they “do so at their own risk.”

New feature is screened CROWDS ONCE packed into Javea’s Central Cinema, making the picture house a central hub in the social life of the Costa Blanca town. by jack troughton CROWDS ONCE packed into Javea’s Central Cinema, making the picture house a central hub in the social life of the Costa Blanca town. A new exhibition has opened to celebrate the unique history of a building that not only screened the blockbusters of the day but lay at the heart of the Old Town and its community. The exhibition ‘The Central Cinema: Past and Present’ – a retrospective of photos and memorabilia – is on show at the neighbouring Soler Blasco Museum and is aimed at raising public awareness of this iconic but neglected building. Closed for 14 years after being acquired by Javea Town Council, moves are afoot to breathe new life into the cinema and restore its role in the town. The exhibition has been organised by El Generador Cultural Association as part of the fittingly named ‘Coming Soon Project’ and the town hall has already applied for funding to restore the cinema, while the public will play a part in deciding how it is used. Originally a warehouse for storing almonds, the building stood empty for many years before being purchased by the Ortunos, a Javea family who had previously owned a baker’s shop. The family spotted a business opportunity in bringing the big screen to the town and after major alterations and internal reconstruction work, its debut as a picture house was delayed by six months because of missing paperwork. OSCAR However, on 2nd April 1955, Cecil B Deville’s Oscar winning film ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ played on the opening night – a legendary circus-based drama starring Betty Hutton, Cornel Wilde, and Charlton Heston and including James Stewart, Dorothy Lamour and Gloria Graham in supporting roles. The opening night was packed with an audience of 740, including as guests Mayor Juan Jose Tena and his councillors, four Javea priests and the Guardia Civil.

The Central Cinema

The film played for the next six days to full houses – people paying 3 pesetas admission. At the time the minimum age for film buffs was 16 – and the police regularly inspected to insure no children were inside. And such was the popularity of the picture house that the box office would open on Sundays after Mass – enabling churchgoers to buy tickets for the evening performance. Season tickets for film fans were available. And apart from screening films and hosting the first film club, thanks to its stage and excellent acoustics, the cinema was also used for musical shows, theatre, ballets, and festivals, drawing people from neighbouring towns. The Central Cinema closed as a picture house in 1990 after a 35-year run – its history is now being told, and it is hoped its fortunes will soon be restored as a cultural asset.

Do what you should have done

I’M SORRY, but how did the letter from ‘Torrevieja’, become the ‘letter of the week?’ From his own admission he knows of two scum who are cheating him, me and all those more deserving of Benefits and yet, unless I’ve missed read his letter, he has taken no action whatsoever. There has, over the last few years been enough publicity about the phone and website that may be used, (in confidence I might add), to report these thieves. Or, is he, like most, waiting for someone else to do the job for him? The longer he waits the longer these scum will laugh all the way to the bank at the end of each month. I’m sure RTN would be only too happy to repeat the Phone and Web Site info. So come on, Torrevieja, do what you should have done by now. letter of the week

Italian pot calling Spanish kettle black IT IS sunny and a beautiful day. I always enjoy RTN and early Friday mornings pick up a copy. The first thing I do is turn to read the letters page and cartoon and would like to comment on something I just read which reminded me of the saying, ‘The pot calling the kettle black’. The Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti recently voiced his concern about the messed up condition of the Spanish economy and the negative effect it is

having on Europe. The Spanish government led by Mariano Rajoy, as you might rightly imagine, was not at all impressed and demanded an apology. It is quite extraordinary that Italy would be calling the Spanish economy a mess considering the Italian economy is pretty messed up itself. Talk about the Italian pot calling the Spanish kettle black! Luci P. Playa Flamenca

Are you hard up in Europe? Are you feeling the pinch more than you feel is fair? Is it because of the appalling exchange rate? All those on fixed incomes with private pensions might well be affected. Is it because you pay more than your fair share in taxes to the UK? Those of us who by law have to pay income tax to the UK are probably paying far more than a Frenchman would with the same income. Such people are the ex military, ex-fire service, ex-police service, ex-teachers and ex local government workers. This group of people on modest pensions probably lose out on the tax rebates (for home helps or gardening help) available to French people, because you can’t get tax rebates on income tax paid to the UK! Are you amongst the very elderly who, because you emigrated before 1998, or because you reached retirement age after leaving Britain, do not receive the Winter Fuel Payment? I am very well aware that this could be a largely hidden problem. I know of two hard up people who have no computer access and haven’t a clue about finances. People are reluctant to come forward. We would like to create a dossier of case histories, with your help. All information will be kept anonymously, unless you indicate otherwise. Please contact Brian Cave at lefourquet@gmail.com or Graham Richards at graham.richards@orange.fr. P.S. We would especially like to hear from any former RN personnel who are experiencing financial hardship. Brian Cave

Be warned - this is a scam I RECEIVED this information a few days ago. It purports to be from the Spanish tax office informing me that I am eligible for a tax rebate - very nice! BUT this is a scam! Please advise your readers to NEVER give personal or banking/credit card information in response to an unsolicited email. Official organisations will only write directly to their

client quoting their relevant reference number. You will notice that this is just addressed to ‘Dear client’. The organisation would also print their official address and telephone number for the client to contact them. I hope that this information is of use and helps prevent a reader from being conned. Windy politicians

ALTHOUGH I have not changed my opinion concerning political comments in your readers’ letters section, I would like to be given the opportunity to reply to Mr Jack Johnson’s letter in RTN issue 648: WINDY POLITICIANS? Ah, Jack lad, you have lost your money (see RTN 648), I am much too pragmatic to be suckered in the way you suggest, and certainly not rabid. I view ALL politicians and those who slavishly mouthpiece their propaganda, in the same way that I view wind farms! IF you are as good as your word, then put your money where your mouth is. May I suggest a decent contribution to a worthwhile charity? I suggest the Lions of Moraira, who are a very deserving cause. If you let the RTN know how much you have generously contributed, and to which charity, I will match you cent for cent. That should show my good faith. Also, Jack my boy, go visit your doctor and get some stronger pills. Those you are on now don’t seem to be working! Terence M Newman Moraira/Teulada

The Fast Track Hypnosis Diaries

MY FAST Track Hypnosis has now been around for over 25years, putting well over 55,000 people under Hypnosis for various problems, some complicated and some by quite simple such as to stop smoking or to lose weight, either by the 30 minute Weight Control session or the now extremely popular Gastroband session (Gastric The Costa Blanca’s Band by Hypnosis). Top Hypnotherapist Everyone knows the benefits of stopping smoking or losing weight but every so often there are major changes in a person’s life that can happen even after just one session and it is nice that I could help with this one below. This is a letter sent in by a young woman called Sarah who had a serious type of diabetes: after just one simple session of Fast Track Hypnosis her life changed dramatically. Sarah had a condition called Brittle Diabetes. Brittle Diabetes is a term used to describe particularly hard to control Type 1 Diabetes. Brittle Diabetes is rare but serious. Around 3 in 1,000 people with Type 1 will develop Brittle Diabetes and it is most likely to affect women who are overweight between the ages of 15 and 30. People who have brittle diabetes will experience frequent, extreme swings in blood glucose levels causing hypoglycaemia and is often associated with psychological issues such as stress and depression. All people with diabetes will have a certain level of blood glucose level fluctuation. However, when these shifts are not extreme or over-frequent they do not impair the ability to lead a normal life. With Brittle Diabetes, however, the fluctuations are more serious and tend to result in frequent hospital visits, interruption to employment and can often contribute to psychological issues such as stress. “Unable to control weight due to Brittle Type 1 Diabetes for 11 years I was having terrible cravings for sweets, crisps, chocolates, etc, and as a result of a poor diet and addictions I was taking 8 - 9 insulin

Alan Gilchrist

injections per day. “My health was at a serious risk and I had tried many different medications and herbal remedies without success. After 17 hospital admissions in a diabetic coma and DKA in 12 months I had no other choice but to seek more help. I contacted Alan and he was able to see me that evening. “Within 6 weeks my cravings reduced by 95% and my insulin injections were also reduced to 1 - 2 at the most per day. I feel as if I am not a Diabetic anymore and it’s the best I’ve felt in a long time. I would definitely recommend Alan to anyone - he was the first to help me in many ways! Absolutely brilliant. Sarah...” It’s that time of the year again that causes millions of people to live in terror for 24 hours. Another Friday 13th is upon us again. Millions of people throughout the world live in terror of this particular day, and virtually become a recluse in their own home with this phobia, an irrational fear that something awful is about to befall them. Such superstitious beliefs are also quite prevalent in Greece and Spain where usually Tuesday the 13th is considered the unluckiest day. In 2012 there are three Friday 13ths for the poor phobic person to endure – January, April and July. Thankfully this doesn’t happen again until 2015 and 2026 but each year has at least one of them. Did you know that the fear of the number 13 is called Triskaidekaphobia and the fear of Friday 13th is called Paraskavedekatriaphobia. The phobia Paraskavedekatriaphobia derives from a 99-year-old word made up of a combination of the Norse and Greek roots words for ‘Friday’ (Paraskeví), ‘13’ (dekatreís) and ‘fear’ (phobia). Friday has long been considered unlucky for many reasons: in the religious context, Jesus was crucified on a Friday; mythically, Frigga was a Scandinavian love goddess, who was worshipped on the sixth day of the week. Christians called Frigga a witch, and consid-

ered Friday to be the witches’ day. Some academics suggest that the fear of the number 13 originated in a myth, whereby 12 Gods were having a feast in Valhalla. It’s said that the naughty and crafty Loki disrupted the event and appeared as the 13th guest making Hod (the blind God of darkness) throw a branch of mistletoe at Balder (the God of delight and cheerfulness).Balder was instantly killed and the earth was forced into eternal darkness and mourning. One famous person who supposedly had the fear of the number 13 was Queen Victoria. The story goes that she was invited to a dinner but refused to join the other guests because she would have been the 13th at the table, until someone pointed out that one of the guests was pregnant! There are millions of people throughout the world who have strange phobias and over the years I have had to help many of them using Fast Track Hypnosis which normally takes 4 sessions. Using the calming effects of my Fast Track Hypnosis method the subconscious mind is allowed to see the phobia in a very funny way. The theory behind this is quite simple: by laughing at your phobia, you cannot be frightened of it, and if you are not frightened of it, it goes away. What started out as a personal interest about the various phobias that people can have ended with me compiling a list and putting it on my website: they range from the fear of the mother-in-law - Penthraphobia - to the fear of long words – Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia - which would itself make the person have a phobia about a phobia! Oh, and guess what, that’s called Phobophobia! Over the years that I have compiled the list of phobias and their names, it may surprise you to know that my list now extends to over 250 and is still growing. Two that I have successfully treated but as yet have found no name for, is a phobia of hair remover and another of plastic spiders!

Alan holds his Fast Track Hypnosis sessions in Cabo Roig, Guardarmar, and Benidorm and NEW in Los Alcazares. Alan is also the creator of the ‘Stop Smoking in under 30 minutes Fast Track System’. A COUPLE of months ago I read an article about a device called a Power Saver which apparently reduces the amount of electricity you use. I don’t think I am alone when I say I am sceptical of such claims but having weighed up the odds, I thought I would take a chance and give it a try. So, having ordered one from Iberswitch the electricity switching company, it was delivered a couple of weeks later. The instructions simply said “plug into a normal socket as close to the fuse box as possible,” which I did. Not really knowing what to expect and frankly, not expecting to see a huge difference to my bill, I decided to try an experiment of my own and was very surprised at the results. For three days with the Power Saver plugged in I monitored my usage, taking meter readings at the beginning and end of each day. I used the

washing machine noting the time of day and made a list of all consumption: hovering; cooking; kettle; water heating etc. For the following three days I did virtually the same but this time, I removed the device. It was a long six days but I was determined to see it through and I am glad I did because with almost identical usage, my meter showed a reading for the time I had used the Power Saver of about 10% less. If I make this level of saving for the life of the unit which I am told should be 5 to 6 years, I will be extremely happy with the 40€ that I paid. It’s a shame I didn’t know about the Power Saver years ago so thank you Iberswitch for bringing it to my attention and as they say, better late than never.

Luis Maria Pizana presents Torrevieja’s Spring 2012 Cultural Programme

Programme. Containing more than 244 events including musical concerts, workshops, theatre productions, lectures, galas and children’s entertainment, the Programme is both extensive and attractive to residents, visitors and tourists alike. The quarterly Cultural Programme runs from April to the end of June and the Torrevieja Town Hall has invested nearly 75,000€ in the schedule. More than 20,000 copies of the Cultural Programme have been printed and are available in all municipal and tourist offices in Torrevieja. Luis Maria Pizana told RTN that once again a full calendar of extensive and varied cultural and leisure activities highlights the Town Hall’s commitment to quality programming, with a variety of cultural genres to accommodate all audiences; whilst also continuing to be firmly committed to the promotion and representation of associations and cultural organisations and local music. Pizana also explained that the Cultural Department team continues to renew the programming format and that this programme includes a daily planner in which you can visualise all the possibilities not only culturally

but also leisurely in Torrevieja. Furthermore, he said that the Town Hall remains committed to supporting basic culture, combined with great performances that keep Torrevieja as a true benchmark both nationally and internationally. One of the highlights of the Spring 2012 Cultural Programme is the visit of one of Spain’s greatest singers, Raphael, in a concert to be held on May 18th at 10.30pm in the International Music Hall. Next weekend from 20th to 22nd April, the II Couplets Festival will take place and from 27th to 29th April the 18th edition of the Habaneras Youth Fair will be located in the city. One of the most important events of the year will take place on May 5th and 6th as the First National Congress of the new photographic phenomenon ‘Instagram’ will take place alongside the first national exhibition of this type of photography and is entitled ‘Torrevieja 2.0: A different view through the I-phone’. Meanwhile, from Wednesday 9th to Sunday 13th May, Torrevieja’s extremely popular Sevillanas May Fair will be held near the harbour. Howlers and encouraging words... 13 APR - 19 APR 2012

Watts In Britain By

Paul Watts

Howlers... BEFORE I start there was a bit of a typo in last week’s article. I wrote about my old chum Chic Gammage as being the Costa Blanca’s favourite bateria, which, of course, is Spanish for drummer. However, during the process onto printed page the spelling program altered this to ‘bacteria’. That added ‘c’ completely changed the sentence and I wish to offer apologies to Chic for this howler and any unintended offence. He does, I assure you, remain the Costa Blanca’s favourite drummer (I’m sticking to the English). ...and encouraging words Thanks for the letters of encouragement after last week’s WIB on impending retirement. Terry Read of Leatherhead is closer to his ‘sell-by’ date than me. “You should worry, Paul,” writes Tel, “I’m for the scrapheap this year.” He thinks that ‘just being’ into single figures is nothing at all. “I’m into single weeks,” reveals Tel, “and worried stiff.” Apparently, the cause of his worry is generated by well meaning family members who keep on referring to the end of his ‘usefulness to society’. I understand you Tel, that’s the thing that rings alarm bells with me. A recurring worry is being wheeled into ER all bruised and bashed up; George Clooney looks down and says, “Nah, not this one. His usefulness to society is over – stick him in the corner...” However, not everyone agrees with this gloomy take on life past the ‘sell-by’ date. Debbie Wright correctly observes that were I a government official in China I’d still be a junior one. And, she wryly notes, should I desire to be the next Pope I would have at least a decade or so to wait before even being considered for the

Chic the bateria

role. Hmmm, Debs I’m not sure that even waiting a decade would secure me a place for that particular job interview. Debbie points out that 50’s crooner and exradio presenter Jimmy Young is still engaged by the Daily Express as a columnist. “And he,” Debs tells me, “is over ninety years old, so we RTN readers can look forward to Watts in Britain well into the 2040s!” Oh gawd, what a prospect, eh? Especially, if your names Chic and you can’t rely on my proof-reading! I suppose retirement just isn’t for everyone. The cricket commentator Brian Johnson was still fully engaged as an after-dinner speaker right up to the end of his ‘innings’. In fact, as he ‘popped off’ in the car on his way to a gig

you could say he never actually retired. Another example: Letter from America, was dispatched every week by Alistair Cooke (for 58 years - making it the longest running speech radio show in the world) until just two months before his death at the age of 95. Also, my own granddad worked full-time for a further twenty-one years beyond his sell-by date, so I guess, Debbie has a point. Right, I’d better pull myself together and stop all this moping around. First of all I need to double check that the bloody ‘spell-check’ hasn’t altered anything like turning old chums into micro-organisms. Maybe it is time to retire... Watts in Britain, so you don’t have to be...

It can only get worse INTERESTING AND busy time for me last week as my latest column on www.telegraph.co.uk has generated a huge amount of feedback, as I challenged Spain to resist the expats attempts to turn it into a series on mini Britains, and to hold onto their cultures and traditions. My point was basically that unless Spain remains as Spain it will lose its appeal for holiday makers and future expats alike, so By taking the long term view was essential. It is the long term, the future, that has dominated much of what I have been discussing and debating this week, Expat as more than one analyst has argued with conviction that 2013 is going to be a ‘financial crunch’ for Spain, with blogger many predicting that a EU bailout will be required. www.almerimarlife.com The main problem is that the financial markets are concerned over Spain’s rising public debt, bulging deficit, fragile banks and a slide into recession at a time of soaring unem-

Chris Marshall

ployment. Of course this means that the investors have taken the opportunity to force the government to pay higher borrowing costs at recent bond auctions and snapping up securities that pay out in the case of a default on sovereign debt. So far Spain has fudged the issue, keeping its head firmly in the sand so to speak, by accepting massive loans from the European Central Bank at rock bottom rates. We have started to see the effects of this short term, some would say desperate, strategy, with the EU demanding yet more budget costs and austerity measures from Rajoy and his government, despite the announcement of 27€ billion of cuts in the last budget, and 800,000 taking to the streets to protest against the labour reforms. Analysts remain concerned that Spain will struggle to meet the new targets to cut the public deficit from a runaway 8.5 percent of annual economic output last year

to 5.3 percent this year and just 3.0 percent in 2013, as the country enters a new recession and with official forecasts that the jobless rate will rise to 24.3 percent this year from 22.85 percent at the end of 2011. Large annual public deficits have rapidly pushed up the accumulated public debt, expected to rise to 79.8 percent of economic output this year from 68.5 in 2011, and international investors are convinced that Spain will need to restructure its debt at some point in the next 10 years. So with growing consensus that Spain won’t meet the deficit reducing target for 2013 of 3% or get unemployment down, many feel that there won’t be much growth for Spain for the next 5 years, with the current recession lasting for two years, followed by two years of ‘timid’ growth, with yet another recession to follow. Depressing isn’t it!

Chris is a freelance writer who writes a monthly column for the Telegraph Expat as well as a weekly column for the RTN. He lives in Almerimar with his wife Sands, five cats, two Harley-Davidsons and more often than not a bottle of red wine. Spanish Real Estate Law The 10 year construction guarantee insurance. No need to establish one when it is a family home for personal use of the self promoter. by

Carlos Baos

of White & Baos Abogados English & Spanish Solicitors

Dear Sirs, We have recently developed and built a home for our family but do not know whether to contract the 10 year construction guarantee insurance or not. We have been told that being self promoters there is no need to have one. Will this be a problem if we decide to sell our property in the future? Dear reader, Thank you for your consultation Indeed, according to Law 28/1999 LOE all the new constructions built for living purposes should have 10 year construction insurance guarantee. This law itself states that it will not be necessary to provide

such guarantee for an individual self promoter building one family home for own personal and family use. Therefore this exception requires: 1.) From a subjective point of view that the developer is an individual self promoter. This expression has been widely interpreted by the Spanish General Direction of Registries and Notaries considering as an individual a natural person (persona fisica), a corporate person (corporate body, company) (persona jurídica) or a group of people who built different properties and each of them will use one property as their family home. On the contrary it will not be understood as an individual when different people build one property or in those cases where the property is part of a community of owners subject to the horizontal property regime. 2.) From an objective point of view it must be one single dwelling for the use of one single family, architecturally independent from any other houses and without common elements with other properties or housing overlays, etc. a Multi housing complex will not be considered under this category. And it must be used by the self promoter, therefore any

constructions to be used by third parties, for other uses than dwelling purposes, renting, professional activity etc are also excluded. Therefore if this is the case that you are the self promoter for a single dwelling for your own use and did not contract the 10 year guarantee construction insurance when you built, then you should be aware that if you sell your property before 10 years have elapsed, then the purchasing party will need to waive the 10 year guarantee construction insurance by putting it in writing in the purchasing contract along with all the other conditions agreed on. At Sporting Arbitrage we are achieving risk free, tax free returns for our clients with a consistent return of around 2.75% per month. HOW DOES IT WORK? Arbitrage is the purchase of currencies, securities and commodities in one market for immediate resale in another in order to make a profit. Banks are constantly engaged in arbitrage situations, racking up huge profits for themselves in the process. In Sporting Arbitrages case the ‘commodities’ are horses or football teams with the biggest market on the internet – the betting industry. But they do not gamble with your money, Sporting Arbitrage predominantly employs Betfair, a trading platform with a £450 million weekly turnover, engineering tiny margins with no risk. Our experienced traders at Sporting Arbitrage create margins no matter how miniscule, to ensure that their clients are benefiting from around 60% of all the horse races held in the UK, with no losses racked up on the remainder. Furthermore grabbing margins on major football matches too. The traders deal in mathematical certainties and it is the equivalent of buying rubber, cocoa beans or any other commodity but with a predetermined profit.

HOW DOES SPORTING ARBITRAGE PRODUCE RETURNS AT MINIMAL RISK? If we back at a bigger price than we lay them we cannot lose. The fact is demonstrated on the website and at our various presentations. WHAT WILL YOU RECEIVE? As a client you will be given an exclusive user name and password so that you can check the status and value of your account. You can invest a lump sum for immediate income, there is the facility to draw off profits monthly or simply make regular contributions and build capital. Whenmissingadeadline can cost you dearly ARE YOU good at meeting deadlines? They paralyse some people and bring out the best in others. Some can be flexible – whereas others are simply not to be missed. Take the complementary tax deadlines, for example.

by

Suzanne O’Connell Customer Care at Ábaco

In last week’s article we talked about this highly unpopular tax that is taking unsuspecting budget property purchasers by surprise. It is a supplementary transfer tax that can be levied up to five years after you’ve bought a property. It applies in cases where the Tax Authority’s valuation is above the amount you paid for it. The ‘Modelo B10’ is the first letter you might receive if the Tax Authority believes that you have under declared the real value of your property and so avoided paying higher transfer tax. Of course, you haven’t (although many people did in the past) but the Tax Authority don’t know that. The fact that there is a difference between what you paid and what the Tax Authority thinks your property is worth means that they are ready to slap the missing tax on top.

It is worth taking a good look at this first letter and registering any major discrepancies or factual errors in the first 10 day period given. You can expect to receive your second letter between 30 to 50 days after. From then you’ve only got 30 days in which to lodge an appeal or up to 45 days in which to pay the full amount or request stage payments. If you miss this deadline then you will have a fine on top of the tax and its interest. The appeal deadline is one of those inflexible ones that can’t be negotiated. We have had people approach us wanting to appeal after the deadline has passed. Unfortunately, by this time, there is nothing we can do and the only option is for them to pay up. And it is worth appealing against. For a 100,000€ property that the Tax Authority values at 140,000€ you would have an additional 7% to pay on the 40,000€ difference. A tidy sum of 2,800€ tax added to which would be interest going back to when you bought the property and a fine if you miss the payment deadline.

If you would like to know more about this tax and/ or have received a demand yourself you can go to our complementary tax web page: http://www.abacoconnect.com/complementary-tax If you do beat the deadlines and receive your letter in good time then we believe that appealing against this tax is a very viable option. You can contact us for free advice about complementary and other types of tax by calling our helpline 96 670 3748 or visiting our website www.abacoconnect.com

The benefit row JOBLESS BRITS in Spain claiming the British Jobseekers’ Allowance are facing renewed criticism. Criteria for claiming the £67 per week allowance demands only that the claimant continues to ‘look for work’ in any EU state to be entitled to claim for a period of three months. In 2011 £1million was paid in jobseekers’ allowance to around 2,000 people who had gone to another European country. The British government is bound by European law which states that benefits acquired in one member state must continue to be paid to those who move to another. Tory MP Philip Davies said: “It’s a loophole the Government should be doing its best to close off, and if it is to do with European regulations it is yet another reason why we would be better off out of the EU.”

Moving back to the UK

I am in the process of selling my house in Spain and sending the money back to the UK in exchange for Sterling. Firstly, what is the best way to achieve the most Sterling Kevin Wright for my money and secondly, is there any way I can ascertain exactly how much Account Manager, Sterling I will have available even though completion is 6 weeks away? Moneycorp by

This question is interesting because when using a Spanish bank to exchange the Euros to Sterling it is not only the rate but also the fees that have to be considered. Typically, charges can be up to 1% for simply depositing the draft from the notary and transferring the Euros out. Add to this the rate of exchange and you really could be losing out. Using a currency company such as Moneycorp is a way to ensure that you are receiving the most competitive exchange rate. However, we can also save clients money on the bank fees, definitely ensuring more Sterling arrives into your UK bank account. As an example, the additional Sterling generated on a property sale price of €200,000 could be as much as £4,500 by using Moneycorp instead of your Spanish bank. For the second part of your question there is of course no way of predicting at what level the £/€ rate will be in 6 weeks time. However, relating back to last weeks question on the timing of transfers, Moneycorp does have an option that can help. Once your property is sold and the 10% deposit secured you are able fix the exchange rate for delivery of the Sterling at a later date (to coincide with your completion). Forward contracts protect against adverse currency movements and can be used to lock into favourable exchange rates. This will also mean that you will know to the exact penny the Sterling amount you will receive after completion. The process is simple and requires only a small deposit as the balance is payable once you have the proceeds of the sale. For further information on the range of services discussed and guidance when selling your Spanish property please see www.moneycorp.com/ roundtownnews or call 0034 902 887243

Expressevictionsinpractice by

Michael Olmer

Solicitor, Link Point Legal and Business Services

WHEN THE law to promote rental property, known popularly as the “express eviction” law (law 19/2009) came into force in Spain on 24th December 2009 it was heralded as providing a streamlined eviction process to get rid of bad tenants. It was hoped that this would encourage more property owners to rent out their property, but how is it functioning in practice?

The new rules apply to both urban and rustic property, and to residential and commercial tenancies of any length. Under the new rules a Landlord can apply for eviction on the grounds of only one month’s arrears of rent. The first stage in the process, which is not obligatory but advisable, is to send a “Burofax” or registered letter, to the defaulting Tenant demanding payment of the arrears of rent within 7 days. This should contain a full statement of how the arrears have accrued. This is particularly important where the Tenant has made occasional payments while the arrears have been building up. If the Tenant does not pay the full amount, or agree a payment plan which is acceptable to the Landlord, the next step is to issue a Court Summons to evict the Tenant and recover the money due. The proceedings must be supported by the following documents, all in Spanish • A copy of the rental contract; and • A copy of the Landlord’s ‘escritura’ or ‘Nota Simple’

to prove that they are in fact the owner of the property; and • A written statement of the amount of rent owed together with the amount of any outstanding bills for electricity, water, etc.; and • Copies of all previous written demands for the money owed. The Court Summons is then delivered to the Tenant. Crucially the Tenant does not have to accept service of the Summons in person, it need only be delivered to the property. Once the proceedings have been sent to the Tenant the Tenant then has 20 days in which he has his one and only chance to either pay up, or formally come to terms with the Landlord. The Tenant can make an offer to pay the arrears through the Court which the Landlord may accept or reject. If the Landlord accepts the offer but the Tenant breaks the arrangement, the Landlord may apply to evict the Tenant without going back to Court. If the Landlord rejects the Tenant’s offer the Landlord can apply immediately to the Court to evict the Tenant. When the Court makes an order for eviction it also fixes the date when it is to be executed by the police which is not less than 15 days after the date of the hearing. All this sounds great, but in practice the Courts and the police and Guardia Civil who actually have to carry out the evictions, are so under-resourced and under such pressure that the much- vaunted streamlined procedure has become a lumbering behemoth.

We are finding in the Valencian Community and Alicante Province that even when a defaulting Tenant ignores the proceedings, that it is taking 8 to 12 weeks for evictions to be carried out. If the Tenant knows how to “play the system” and gives notice that he intends to defend the case this can buy him a further 6 to 8 weeks, and even if he fails in his attempts to avoid eviction, it will be a further 8 to 12 weeks before he is finally evicted. Add all this time up and you will find that an “express eviction” can take from 22 to 32 weeks. If you are renting your property out it is more important than ever that the tenancy and the Tenant is properly documented. At the very least you will require, • A formal professionally prepared written tenancy agreement; and • An inventory of the contents; and • A photographic record of the condition of the property; and • A copy of the Spanish Identity card, or NIE number and Passport of your Tenant Be sure to take a sufficient deposit in cash or cleared funds to cover possible damage to the property and a sufficiently large advance rental payment to concentrate the Tenant’s mind on the importance of keeping to the rental contract. If you are thinking of renting your property out contact us at Link Point to draw up the rental contract and advise you on how best to avoid future problems.

savings in gold makes sense ! MOST PEOPLE complain about the rising cost of living and the difficulty of making their money go further. The truth is that the real purchasing power of your money is being gradually eroded by creeping inflation and the debasement of our currency by government actions like money printing and abnormally low interest rates. You can’t change government policy quickly, but you can stop the erosion of your savings and overall wealth by putting some of your savings and investments into Gold and Silver assets. Think of it this way and you’ll understand why. Since the Global Currency system, we have today, started to be controlled by central banks and the actions of governments the real value of our paper money (currency) has been slowly eroding. In the last 40 years the cost of an average 3 bedroom house in the UK has probably risen from around £20,000 to £225,000 a rise of more than 1100%. But the value of this same house, measured against the value of Gold has remained virtually unchanged. In other words if you had owned just 200 ounces of Gold back in the 70’s you could have bought this house outright then as you could do with the same amount of Gold today!. Why because it isn’t that the value of the house has gone up 1100% but more that the value of your money has gone down, thereby requiring much more “money” to buy that same house. Gold has been the best store of value for the last 5000 years and is still the best defence against rising prices and depreciating currency values.

WOMEN OF Fire hold monthly networking lunches for ladies in business and last week, they held a very successful lunch for 30 ladies and enjoyed great food at the Piedra De Luna Restaurant in Benimar to celebrate International Women’s Day. Throughout 2011 they had various raffles with prizes donated by the very kind and generous ladies who come to lunch and these raffles enable the committee to raise money for the group, so they can give back to the community and most importantly donate funds to various the charities that they support. During 2011, Women of Fire split their fundraising efforts between Paul Cunningham Nurses, Torrevieja Costa Lions and Help at Home Costa Blanca and each charity had representatives at last week’s meeting to receive the donated money. MAKE A DIFFERENCE Susan Reader from PCN, Norah Bond from HAH Costa Blanca and Janette Bennett from the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club were the representatives and all were delighted for the kind and generous donation to their charities. Janette told RTN: “On behalf of the club, I would like to say thank you to the members and friends of Women of Fire for their very kind donation. I’m sure I don’t have to tell anyone how difficult it is for any charity to raise much needed funds in the current economic climate. Every single cent counts to enable us to make a difference.” Women of Fire announced that for 2012, Maria Wilson and the Pink Ladies, who raise funds for the AECC, will be their chosen and dedicated charity. Annual time is here again by

Clodagh & Dick Handscombe Practical gardeners and authors

SUMMER ANNUALS are generally wonderfully coloured profuse flowering plants but unfortunately are only one or two season plants as they grow from seed, flower and die within six to nine months – less if not looked after. They therefore require replacing each year by sowing seeds or buying new plants in the spring and early summer. And from the fantastic displays in local markets and garden centres now is the time to buy and replace the over wintered stocks, wallflowers and pansies. The choice is wide as illustrated in Section 4.1 of our best selling book ‘Gardening in Spain –From Planning to Planting and Maintenance’. Everyone has their own particular favourites tempered to some extent by whether you have only window boxes on the front of a village house; a central patio garden; a terraced town house; a free standing villa or an apartment terrace garden. OUR TEN FAVOURITE ANNUALS Although not enthusiastic about beds of annuals in hot dry Spanish gardens we do grow some annuals on our vegetable plot for cutting for the house and for attracting insects, and we do use annuals in pots/containers for specific dull semi shaded and north facing corners of the garden; especially to brighten up semi shaded corners under trees, a north facing porch, the inner shade of a south facing naya and the ballastrade of a terrace.

We list below our ten favourites and give some essential growing tips based on our experience of long hot summers and winter frosts. 1. Zinnias: which we grow on our vegetable plot as the soil is richer than in our flower garden and we flood the plot every 6 to 10 days from April to September depending on whether it has rained. We grow both small and large flowered multi-coloured varieties for cutting. Normally they will flower from June to the end of September, even through into October. 2. Sweet Peas: are also grown for cutting and again mostly on the vegetable plot where we can grow a ten to twenty metre row without compromising other crops. We plant seeds from the previous years’ plants’ directly in the ground in November/ December. 3. Sunflowers: as a long windbreak on the vegetable plot. Seeds are saved from one year to another and used as a supplementary chicken feed and tapas for ourselves. 4. Trailing Petunias: we grow in large pots and window boxes in full sun and in a couple of hanging baskets in semi shady places. 5. Portulacas: fill seasonally empty pots on a sunny terrace. 6. Busy Lizzies: are good in pots in semi-shaded situations 7. Vincas: are used in the same way as Busy Lizzies. 8. Pansies: a winter favourite for various containers and winter boxes both in full sun and partial shade. 9. Marigolds: colour corners of the vegetable plot and new vegetable raised beds to attract black flies from vegetables, to brighten up the vegetable plot and as a medicinal herb. 10. Nasturtiums: we grow Nasturtiums both on the vegetable plot and in the flower garden in semi-shaded pots and in the semi-shade under a hedge. They give good colour during the autumn and winter until a heavy frost, as a fortnight ago, decimates

them. Leaves and flowers are useful in adding taste and bite to salads, flower and seed pods can be used as a substitute for capers and the plants attract black fly away from other plants. The above selection gives some continuity of colour throughout the year; are not often susceptible to diseases; and are reasonably drought resistant if we do forget to water for a day or the water supply is cut unexpectedly. CARE OF ANNUALS Annuals do need more watering than many other plants, regular deadheading and a fortnightly nitrogen/ potassium feed to maintain healthy growth and maximise both the number and continuity of flowering.

HMR Villa Services

AT LAST - a property management and rental company that ‘does what it says on the tin!’ Howard and Irene of HMR Villa Services have an openness and enthusiasm for what they do: they have a great understanding and experience of the property and rental market here in Spain, having gone through both good and bad experiences themselves when they first bought a property here in Spain, over 10 years ago. “We felt that whilst experience and knowhow are needed to manage and rent out a property here in Spain, our experiences and those of our owners told us that trust was the most important attribute needed above all else. We see ourselves as a much needed service,” says Howard, “and we know that no other company can provide the level of service that we offer.

“This is our core business in which we are totally committed to providing our clients not just with a standard of support and service second to none but to be transparent and honest in all our dealings. We want to be the best at what we do and do that 24/7 not just 9-5 Monday – Friday” HMR Villa Services is without a doubt a one-stop-shop handling all aspects of the Property Management & Rental business such as the booking, placing, arrival and departure of guests as well as cleaning and laundry, pool and garden maintenance and other services too numerous to mention. A large number of their guests return year after year to holiday in the properties managed by Howard and Irene: their guests feel secure with the whole process and know

that someone is there to help if needed. All rental guests are met personally and HMR Villa Services is on hand 24/7 to deal with any problems. They also pay out on rental income 6-8 weeks before the guests arrive. HMR Villa Services – it does what it says on the tin! Rocky’s reached out in style Members of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the RBL

by Louise Clarke ROCKY’S BAR in Playa Flamenca hosted a fabulous fun day on Monday in aid of the Reach Out Torrevieja Charity which helps homeless people and families who are in desperate need in Torrevieja and the surrounding areas. The fun day included TKO’s Lee Fox providing the music as well as Luke Wilder and Andy Jones who wowed everyone with their sensational vocal talents. Graeme Mykal was on hand performing magic tricks galore and providing fun balloons which put a smile on many a child’s face. And as well as a number of stalls selling jewellery and homemade cards, members of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British

Legion were there with the delightful Cathy Carson who sang her heart out for everyone in aid of the charity. POPPY APPEAL Branch Chairman Keith Carter told RTN: “The purpose of our attendance was to promote the work of the Legion, the recruitment of new members and to raise money towards the 2012 Poppy Appeal; all of which I am pleased to say went very well.” Keith said that he would like to thank all the people who took part and donated towards the Poppy Appeal and the other charities and also to all of the members who gave up their time to help out on the stand. Keith added that he hoped to see many new

members at the next meeting on 19th April after several people showed an interest in joining the Branch. The Branch meets at the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras every third Thursday of the month at 7pm and everyone is welcome to attend and join. You do not have to be ex-service to do so. For more information visit their website at www.orihuelacostarbl.com POVERTY Meanwhile representatives at the Reach Out Torrevieja charity were delighted with the turn out at the fun day. The charity is located in Calle Bella Antonia 1 in Torrevieja and it is currently looking after more than 30 families who are affected by dire poverty

in the area. Many of the families have small children and babies and some have terminally ill children. Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Blogs about Spanish

THIS ARTICLE is made up of items that have been appearing over recent months in my blog http://janecronin.wordpress.com which you can also get to via the homepage of my website. They come under various categories such as ‘false friends’, ‘favourite sayings’, ‘Spanish society’ and so on. I hope you enjoy them. SUCCESSFUL SPANISH LEARNING False friends are all over the place and jump up and bite you when you least expect it. I’ve been reminded of an old classic this week – the Spanish word for “success” which is “éxito”. It’s good to be bold and take a guess at words sometimes, but if you were ever tempted to try “suceso” for “success”, you would in fact being talking about an “event.” Actually “sucesos” are the bits of news referring to accidents, murders, robberies and such like, which newspapers often print on a separate “sucesos” page after all the political stuff. If on the other hand you try to use “éxito” to mean “exit” you’re also in trouble. As any regular Spanish car park user knows, the word for “exit” is “salida” – that sign that takes you round in several circles before finally releasing you back into big wide world. So, have you got that? “Success” is “éxito”, “suceso” is “event”, “exit” is “salida”, but guess what - the word for an organised event is “evento”. You see you just can’t win! THERE’S NO ACCOUNTING FOR TASTE Here is a neat little saying that sums up a general observation: “Sobre gustos no hay nada escrito” – there’s nothing written about tastes. It’s strange how the literal translation doesn’t sound quite right. Here’s a less literal one: “There’s nothing laid down, or there’s no law about tastes.” It’s exactly what you say after you’ve been introduced to someone’s horrendous new boy/girlfriend, or been asked to admire some appalling item of clothing. Always best to say it out of earshot though!

POR AND PARA – WHEN DO YOU USE THEM Along with “the difference between B and V”, ”Are they really saying Hasta luego?” and “What does Venga mean?”, ”When do you use por and para?” is right up there with my own list of frequently asked questions. Sometimes I am conscious of not giving a satisfactory answer because it isn’t the right moment to go into a whole lot of detail. At long last this difficulty has been overcome by the eighth of my video tutorials on precisely this subject. You can access it on my site under “video tutorials” and download the whiteboard text free of charge. SPANISH SAYINGS – CUESTA LA CUESTA There are heaps and heaps of words in English and Spanish that mean more than one thing. We are inclined to throw up our hands in horror when we come across this phenomenon in Spanish, and yet we speak a language full of ambiguities. It’s partly because of this that we can make jokes. Just think of “fork handles” and “saw tips”! A very common example of this is the word “light”. We can “light a cigarette” “turn on the light” have a “light colour” and also “a light snack.” Anyway, something similar happens in Spanish with “cuesta”. It is a form of the verb “costar” (to cost) and can refer to prices of things, but is also used to express the difficulty of something. You can say “me cuesta entender español” (it costs me, that is, I find it difficult, to understand Spanish.) At one time I belonged to a walking group in the north of Spain and every time we started panting as we walked up a hill (una cuesta), someone would comment: “cuesta la cuesta” (it’s difficult to walk up the hill). I think they thought they were being witty!

The Twit Of The Week Ellie Redman@ellie_redman : Actually laughing now thinking about the other night when I replied to my own message I sent - Blame it on the a-a-a-alchole!!!!!! X The Rant Stephen Mulhern@StephenMulhern : Ok, maybe I am going mad but I cannot stand people who crunch crisps in their mouth really loud! It really gets me so annoyed! The Statement Kelly Osbourne@MissKellyO : Your beliefs don’t make you a better person, your behavior does! The Good Idea Alastair Campbell@campbellclaret : Love the idea of overnight new stamps to celebrate any Team GB gold medal winner in the Olympics. The Funny Tweets David Walliams@davidwalliams : I hope that man who disrupted the Oxford and Cambridge boat race gets Thames tummy like I did. Jenson Button@JensonButton : At the pool changing rooms and there is a guy shaving his forehead!! That’s a first! ;-) Max Rushden@maxrushden : When Jeremy Vine introduces the Eggheads - he probably doesn’t have to sound quite as serious as when he’s on panorama. Keith Duffy@officialkeith : The amount of people who confuse ‘’to’’ and ‘’too’’ is amazing two me.

The Understudy DAVID NICHOLLS has already kept his fans amused with one-offs like Starter for Ten and the hugely successful One Day, but The Understudy must be the rib tickler par excellence, mostly because we’re all in there.

The story revolves around Stephen C McQueen, who ploughs his disastrous career in showbiz playing passers-by and dead people. His hopeless agent has got him a part as the understudy for Josh Harper, the 12th Sexiest Man in the World, currently knocking female members of the audience dead playing the dissolute Lord Byron in the West End. The play is called ‘Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know’ after the incestuous lord but Stephen’s problem is that Josh Harper lives up to his theatrical persona off stage – and Stephen is a loyal mate of Josh and incidentally in love with Josh’s oftcuckolded wife Nora. Somewhere in all that is Stephen’s chance to get his big break – but will he succeed? I promise you’ll laugh out loud finding out. I did. Life charity Spoilsport fails to spoil the fete by Louise Clarke MORE THAN 600€ was raised at last Saturday’s Village Fete in Rio Nalon, Los Alcazares. The annual event, which is held in aid of the MABS Cancer Care charity in the Mar Menor, attracted hundreds of people to the commercial area, which is located just a few minutes walk away from the shores of the beautiful Mar Menor. The event included a Zumba demonstration and a fashion show, courtesy of Legs and Co and one of the highlights of the afternoon was a stunning vocal display by a young lady called Shannon, whose Mum and Dad own the local fish and chip restaurant, Pearl’s Plaice. She single-handedly raised 170€ singing a variety of songs from Adele to Amy Winehouse; all in aid of the charity. As well as Shannon, the extremely talented Spangles also performed as did Raquel Pena’s Flamenco for All dance troupe. LOCAL POLICE Janet Bell from MABS was delighted with the fundraising efforts made on

Shannon and some of the MABS volunteers

the day. She told RTN: “We raised a staggering 681€ for MABS, which is nearly double last year and all despite the fact that we are still in a recession. The event was also enjoyed by several hundred spectators throughout the day and I would like to say, on behalf of MABS, a huge thank you to everyone involved in the event.” This was also despite the fact that the Local Police was called to the event after being

contacted by one bar owner who said that the music was too loud! Fortunately, organisers of the event had a full licence from the Los Alcazares Town Hall for the event and produced it immediately to the officers, who thanked them and told them to carry on. It would have been nice for everyone to have got involved and enjoy the fun, especially for such a good cause; but you always get one don’t you?!

Life food

Food Consultant Edwin Cheeseman

Passing off WITH MORE and more customers apparently taking note of the provenance of their food just how are we supposed to check if they are telling us the whole truth on their menus? At a Supermarket recently I noticed, displayed quite prominently, River Cobbler on special offer. Feeling a little mischievous I suppose I asked the young fish monger to describe it: “It’s a white fish which tastes like Cod and is a good alternative to Cod or Haddock” Now while Cod and Haddock are sea fish surely the name river suggests that this is a river fish. “I’ll get my supervisor,” who when asked to describe the fish said exactly the same as the young man. Now once can be a possible mistake but twice suggests company policy. River Cobbler = Panga, a suspect river fish from Vietnam, and a fish readily available here in Spain, quite cheaply, but may I suggest you do a little more research before you buy any. In 2007 tests carried out by the Florida Attorney General’s Office apparently confirmed that 17 out of the 24 Tampa Bay restaurants advertising grouper on the menu weren’t serving grouper at all but everything else from emperor fish to Asian catfish. In fact my own experience of farmed sea bass being passed off as ‘wild’ shows that this is becoming more of a concern, at least to me. One restaurant in Sanibel, a small Island off

the East Coast of America, advertised ‘fresh fish delivered daily’, including salmon. As the place is difficult enough to get to by car I asked where the hell it came from, ‘daily’. “Oh it’s frozen from Canada, our customers are so stupid they think fish have legs and that salmon is caught locally in the sea here.” And don’t think its only fish that suffer the problem of passing off: recent reports show that Welsh Black beef is suffering the same fate as Pure Aberdeen Angus did a while ago, selling more than was actually being produced. So who’s to blame? Restaurant chefs can claim and do claim that their suppliers told them it was the real thing but surely a professional ought to know? Now whilst I accept that because no-one makes the time, instead claiming not having the time, convenience has overtaken our ability to notice the differences. We (you) buy ready prepared filleted fish and pre-cut steaks thereby removing any visible traces of its real origin. Some would say why bother and who cares if it’s not actually the real thing, after all we all love the knock-off handbags and sunglasses on offer on holiday. Now I personally don’t have an issue with knock off handbags or Louis Vuitton’s profits, probably because I have no interest in them. I do, however, have an issue with a growing band of rogues and villains who think it

acceptable to con the public at the expense of hardworking farmers and fishermen. If the quality of what these people produce is not important, then why do they bother? Just remember, you are what you eat. For example, when we bought beef for our restaurants in the UK we always bought the whole thing, on the bone, and this was solely because the carcass gets only two stamps per side at slaughter to prove its origin and so

does anything attached to it. So if the butcher has cut it up, then you must rely on him to be honest to prove what you are buying. If your fishmonger fillets your fish, then watch him do it. So you must ask the questions of your suppliers be they shops or restaurants, I am sure you could tell if they are being honest or not. If they are selling the real thing then they will be shouting about it and willing to prove it.

An exceptional dining experience By Patricia Thompson THE OLIVE Tree Restaurant is on the outskirts of Moraira, close to the Eurogym. The building has been beautifully refurbished and highly trained and extremely friendly staff ensure you feel at home while you indulge in Karen’s fabulous European and International cuisine. The dining room has an open and airy feel, with comfortable high-backed chairs. Karen’s new menu is a credit to her culinary ability. The house wine which came included in the meal was of a very high standard; another great find by Karen Jewell. The Indian-spiced fish cakes were light and so flavoursome, accompanied by a delicious mango chutney and riata. My dining partner opted for the chargrilled goat’s cheese with rocket and the most divine marinated roasted beetroot. After an amazing starter we just could not wait to see what the main course had in store. My confit of honey mustard pork belly with braised red

cabbage and mashed potato was similarly perfect and my partner described her Tandoori salmon fillet on a cumin and coriander potato cake with wilted spinach as the best ever. Dessert was a decision and a half: the menu is just to die for. I eventually chose the zesty lemon sorbet with summer berries - my partner after must deliberation went for the white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake. Both desserts arrived looking stunning and tasting just as good. We moved onto the spacious terrace for coffee and brandy and to watch the wonderful sunset. With its lovely ambience and absolutely outstanding menu the Olive Tree Restaurant is one of the most exceptional dining experiences I have had in my eight years in Spain: this restaurant is a must. The 3 course menu at the Olive Tree Restaurant including half a bottle of wine is only 20€ which for the standard of the food and surroundings is unbelievable. Spring into summer with bold prints and bright colours With the advent of each spring, we look forward to throwing off our winter shackles of brown, black, and brown-as-the-new-black, and embracing the lighter, the brighter and the altogether more exciting. And this season, we’re seeing this even more so. Light fabrics, bright colours and bold patterns are marking out their territory for Spring/Summer 2012, which is fabulous news for us lucky enough to live in the sun and enjoy an extended summer. This new trend is partly due to advances in fabric-printing technology, allowing designers to run riot now technology can keep pace with their creativity, and partly due to the world economic climate. Yes, you read that correctly – in a recession, we want something that will cheer us up. As Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” The British have a traditionally timid attitude towards colour, although luckily not here in our fabulous Mediterranean climate where sun, sun, sun means fun, fun with colour and pattern. The quality of light

here, not to mention our lovely tanned skins, means we can experiment much more than our friends back in overcast-inAugust Blighty. And the fabulous news for those readers with an experimental streak is the High Street Heaven Boutique will be chock-ablock with pattern and colour this season. In pretty fabrics, a great range of sizes and all from your favourite High Street stores. And at roughly 50% cheaper than the original RRP, what on earth are you waiting for? Want to find out more? Pop along to the Annual Spring Fair for APASA at the High Street Heaven Boutique, Javea. Based within the tranquil setting of Inn on the Green Bowling Club, they have oodles of space for the dozens of stalls on display on the day. Health, Beauty, Wellbeing and everything you’ll need to launch you into a fun and fabulous summer! - Wednesday 18th April, 11am til 4pm at the HSH Boutique, Inn on the Green Javea.

Prestige Nursing and Social Care Services

Community Nursing and Home Care Bling bling in Spain GOOD NEWS - language barriers, cultural differences and differing expectations are now beginning to ease! In a few short years there have been dramatic changes within the Spanish Health and Social sector, particularly within community nursing and home care, where the Spanish health authorities have invested heavily to improve the services provided. In a four year span we have seen the ongoing development of palliative care; improved discharge planning; greater social services referrals and higher levels of cooperation with the private sector, working with and for foreign residents. There are British companies available such as Prestige Nursing that offer comprehensive nursing and home care assistance to ensure that you either achieve complete post hospitalisation recovery and reach your full rehabilitation potential, or have ongoing care assistance so you can maintain independence and live life with greater ease. As an expat resident requiring Home nursing /home care you have the choice of using social services or a private company. If private choose Prestige Nursing, a company that has built effective co-operative working relationships with social services to combine care provision and minimise cost, whilst still giving you the assurance that you will have a professional team working to ensure you understand every aspect of your treatment and care. So often expats feel that when they become ill

bras

There are British companies that offer nursing and home care assistance

or need on-going treatment and care they have to return to England - unfortunately most of these people are remembering the NHS as it was 10 -15 years ago. Medical care in Spain is equal to if not better than England nowadays, but the system and nursing care has in the past been difficult for expats because of cultural and language differences, and methods of training. But with Spain’s societal family structure and dynamics changing, so too is the health and social care provision. It is important for Expats to recognise that they can no longer simply return to England and have access to health care and social services upon

return. You are no longer eligible for immediate free health care and social care in England should you decide to return, and you can find yourself waiting a minimum of six months to receive assistance. For people on holiday, be it a long weekend, a two week break or a longer stay, Prestige Nursing can provide nursing and care services within your hotel or rented accommodation, organising everything from personal care to hire of mobility aids. This is particularly helpful for families that use care services in the UK, or for those who have unfortunately been taking ill whilst on holiday.

Prestige Nursing is a reputable and professional company who employ qualified staff, who speak Spanish as their second language and are CECOVA registered. For more Information call 687 015 517 or email info@prestigenursingcostablanca.com or www.prestigenursingcostablanca.com

Exercise boosts energy Winded by grocery shopping or household chores? Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your endurance. Exercise and physical activity deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and help your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. And when your heart and lungs work more efficiently you have more energy to go about your daily chores.

By Jack Troughton WEAR A bra with pride during ‘Walk for Life’ ask organisers of the MABS Cancer Support Group’s Gran Alicant branch for the 29th April event. The walk is described as a 4km “stroll” and suitable for all levels of fitness – the more energetic are invited to run the course and dogs are welcome, with or without underwear. And MABS said: “Please feel free to dress in the customary pink or a highly coloured or decorated bra, we have seen some fantastic sights in the past! There will be a prize for the best dressed person.” Supported by Santa Pola Town Hall, the start is at the El Clot Galvany sign at the bottom of ‘Cardiac Hill’ and music, balloons and a banner will mark the area. Registration is from 9.15am and the walk will start at 10am. For more information call Jan on 96 669 7754 or Angela on 96 506 0182.

Down the pub with Daniel I BROUGHT the news of the storyline and characters of Sherlock Holmes being seriously tampered with a couple of weeks ago, and I have for you today another piece of hallowed ground being gobbled up by the corporate machine, this time in the shape of James Bond. It’s fairly common knowledge that International Spy hero drinks Dry Martini…‘shaken not stirred’ … and what will Daniel Craig be drinking in the next big Bond movie ‘Skyfall?’ … a bottle of beer! … Yes! … a bottle of bleedin’ beer! … and it will be Heineken as well, the people who sponsor the Champions League. Does this mean we will see Meester Bond in a Chelsea scarf cheerin’ on the blues against Barcelona next week? What makes it all the more worrying is that Heineken tastes awful: it was a good

beer in the beginning, but now it’s just a well marketed drink that will have you believe it tastes good. So now instead of James settling down on his triple size bed with a handsome young lady pouring then shaking his Martini, she could well be arm wrestling with him in between cracking the necks of a couple of bottles of Heineken. The word is that Daniel Craig will also be part of a TV campaign by the brewers and that his mush will appear on certain promotional packs you buy in supermarkets as well. So thanks to the green back dollar Sherlock Holmes is about to have a female Doctor as his sidekick and James Bond is about to become a lager lout. The question that needs to be asked is … are you okay with James Bond swapping his tuxedo for a shell suit?

Whats new for Tom the voice

The legend that is Tom Jones has surfaced in a couple of different ways of late with firstly the great man guest judging on ‘The Voice’ and showing such grace in the face of a difficult job that most of the individuals who take on the role fall heavily short on, mostly due to the fact that they are in the process of self-promotion as opposed to offering any real constructive criticism. Being on ‘ The Voice’ is the first reason Tom is here as I said, the second is, in its own sweet way quite bizarre, as apparently his music has been used by all and sundry for the purpose of both conception and childbirth. Yes you read that bit correctly missus, contestant Chris Grixti on the show told Tom he thinks he was conceived to ‘ What’s New Pussycat’, and even more bizarre is that Catherine Zeta-Jones has come out and confessed that she gave birth to her first child to the same song … is that weird or what! … When things were more or less at a standstill in the maternity room Mrs Douglas was quoted as saying “Put Tom on and I’ll push!” I can understand ‘Sex Bomb’ being part of the conception process, and ‘Baby its cold Outside ‘for childbirth … but ‘What’s New Pussycat’ … nope! … Don’t get that one…

Who ri ri eelie loves Rihanna I was telling you a couple of weeks ago about Rihanna and how she was desperately trying to find a new man in her life and at the time of writing I suggested that all she was doing was making headlines to boost her career as this is something she wrote the book on. However, the fact that she is in the news again on the same subject gets me to thinking I need to cut the girl some slack here. One of the main drivers for this column is the fact that all these celeb peeps are just people like you and me who are fortunate enough to be riding the crest of a wave, but when they fall off their surfboard because they were showing off, they then leave themselves wide open to criticism. And so to the story of Rihanna, which includes an apology from me as the poor girl has stated yet again that she is desperately searching for a soul mate. “ Being on the ‘ A’ list doesn’t mean anything.” said the girl from Barbados, “ It’s hard for everybody … I know that” … ah … bless …also there’s been a lot of babies being born to famous ladies lately with Beyonce leading the charge in that arena, and Rihanna has suggested she might be getting a little bit broody when she said, “ I could soon be ready to have a baby” … so think it through fellas before sending that email, but keep believing, and don’t forget Lily Allen married her painter and decorator.

Life music Chill Factor Vocal Duo

CHILL FACTOR is Pam & John Pearson, a highly professional musical duo with a repertoire that focuses on pop/rock songs of recent times. They have lived and worked in south-east Spain since 2005 after emigrating from Keswick, Cumbria in the UK. Their acoustic set combines the unique sound of John’s customised Eko acoustic guitar and Pam’s edgy yet soulful vocals and along with added harmonies and percussion their performance oozes flair and originality. As their versions of the classics can vary somewhat from the originals, their electric set uses backing tracks specially arranged and recorded in their home studio high in the mountains near Castell de Castells. Many an audience recognises and enjoys their fresh approach to songs by artists including The Police, Fleetwood Mac, Coldplay, Alanis Morissette, Oasis, Dire Straits, Crowded House, Pretenders, Pink Floyd, The Beatles etc. Increasingly popular as a duo, they are also involved in other projects which include their four piece band RIO and also their three piece acoustic dance band T-RIO. For more details phone John or Pam on 696 731 290 or check out their website: www.pamandjohn.net

Rubber Soul (Reformed)

JJ Jones – Neil Diamond Tribute Show

Sunday 15th April: 8pm Mystique Music Bar – Avenida De Madrid, Moraira

JJ JONES is very accomplished singer/guitarist who comes over to Spain once a month for a few days. He has worked the circuit in the south of England, cruise ships and for five years toured Australia with his seven piece band. His act is a two hour spectacular of Neil Diamond’s hits (from the Hot August Night album to the film The Jazz Singer).

AFTER SOME time off the road, Beatles covers band, ‘Rubber Soul’ is back, with Dave Wood (Woody) on vocals/guitar/ keyboards, and ex Wings man Geoff Britton in the drum chair. So, Geoff having worked with Paul McCartney is only one removed from Ringo when it comes to playing Beatles hits. Geoff and Woody have featured in many line-ups together over the last decade, including appearances in Black Glitter and the Brink Band, so fit well together. The band is made up of previous members, guitarist Bernie Waterland and bass player/vocalist, Paul Clarke. Now a tighter unit the band feature classic Beatles hits and album tracks and, as the only band locally featuring the Fab Four’s repertoire this is a great chance to relive those heady days when Liverpool ruled the musical world. Diary this one now!

Family holds court By Jack Troughton THE ADVENTURES of the off-the-wall Groomkirby family bizarrely end up in the Old Bailey in a hilarious farce penned by gifted writer NF Simpson. Based on a novel and with a big screen version starring Eric Sykes, George Cole and Julia Foster, Javea Players present the comedy One Way Pendulum at the Union Musical in Gata de Gorgos from Monday 23rd to Friday 27th April. Directed by Norman Dunnington, it is probably Simpson’s best-known work, the writer described by some critics as the most gifted comic writer “the English stage has discovered since the war.” It is a chance to meet Kirby Groomkirby. The introvert who dresses completely in black and can only be relaxed with his beloved ‘speak-your-weight’ machines, teaching them to sing when relaxing from the day job – a serial killer. ZOO Arthur Groomkirby believes he is master of the house and everything must stop for his latest project, and is currently converting the living room into a courtroom. Sylvia Groomkirby

Four of the Groomkirby clan

is disillusioned with life and with boyfriend Stan likes to visit the zoo and a fascination with apes has her worried about the length of her arms. Mabel Groomkirby takes most things in her stride and likes to get things done indoors and has little time for the outside world, while Aunt Mildred is confined to a wheelchair, slightly deaf, decidedly dotty and obsessed with travel.

And if the family seems eccentric, the surreal appearance at the Old Bailey is markedly odd, complete with an idiosyncratic judge and two totally inept barristers. First night is a cava buffet gala performance and tickets are 15€ each. Tickets for remaining shows are 12€ each. To book, call 96 579 4937 or buy direct from the Humpty Dumpty shop in Javea.

Life tech

Sidebar has disappeared Peter via email asks:

I HAVE a few problems and they are all related to the Windows sidebar. I used to have the current Australian Dollar and Euro exchange rate, along with the local Spanish and Dublin weather displayed on the sidebar. I noticed a while back that the weather service was showing a ‘not available’ message so I tried to delete and reinstall it and now my sidebar has disappeared completely, help! Aunty Says: Hi Peter. I’m assuming you have Vista (as the sidebar is now called simply ‘Gadgets’ in Windows7 and was not a feature in XP) so if your sidebar has disappeared then you can get it back by going to ‘start’ ‘all programs’ ‘accessories’ and click on the ‘sidebar’ option, Windows7 users you can display Gadgets by right clicking on an empty area of your screen and choosing ‘gadgets’ from the drop down list. When my weather gadget stopped working I downloaded the MSN weather gadget from www.gallery.live.com. For those of you not familiar with the Sidebar or Gadgets, they are a handy little feature in Vista and Windows7 that allows you to add small apps to your desktop such as weather, news etc. Don’t go mad and install loads of them as they all take up a little bit of your computers resources and Internet connection.

Email auntyvirus@roundtownnews.com

Cannot do certain things Mick via email asks: A PROGRAM called “sqlite3.ll” pops up each time I switch on my laptop and says that I cannot do certain things, yet everything works as normal. PC clever I am not! So can you explain please, thank you. Aunty Says: I’m pretty sure this file has something to do with one of Apple’s programs, such as iTunes or iPlayer. You should first do a complete and full scan of your laptop with your favourite antivirus and antispyware programs. If everything comes up clean and OK you may have a problem with the Windows registry or a possible hardware or driver fault. You may be lucky and find that restoring your computer to an earlier time fixes the problem so go to the ‘start’ button and choose ‘all programs’ ‘accessories’ ‘system tools’ and click on ‘system restore’. Pick a past date when your laptop was working OK and let me know how you get on.

Software for cleaning up cookies

Alan via email asks: HELLO AUNTY. A couple of weeks ago you recommended some software for cleaning up cookies etc. Unfortunately my copy of RTN was recycled before I could make a note so please could you remind me? Aunty Says: That would have been Ccleaner Alan. You can download it free from download.com, and don’t forget you can also find archived copies of my column on either the RTN website under the ‘Online Paper’ section or via the ‘Aunty Virus’ page on www.enetcomputers.net .

Protection for online banking Bert via email asks: Hi Aunty. In your opinion is the free AVG just as protective as the purchased McAfee Antivirus Plus for online banking? Aunty Says: Hello Bert. I would avoid McAfee and Norton ‘security suite’ products as they are seriously resource hungry and can noticeably slow down even the most modern computer. The free version of AVG has only limited features compared to the paid version (called AVG Internet Security) but again you may find having the complete AVG security suite will slow down your computer. The Windows7 firewall is fairly good, and a weekly scan with Malwarebytes and the free AVG should suffice.

Gadget Inspector Investigates:

Wine Wonders

THIS WEEK the Inspector visits the world of vineyards and vino, and takes a look at some good old booze-related gadgets.

With better weather fast approaching and an ample supply of reasonably priced wine what could be better than a spot of al fresco entertaining? And with the gadgets below on hand to help (and hinder), what could be better? There´s nothing worse than a bottle of warm white wine, but never fear just get hold of the 29€ Corkcicle. Just open your bottle and pop in the Corkcicle – it will start chilling your wine from inside the bottle and keep it airtight in the process. The icicle shape contains a thermal gel that keeps its temperature far longer than ice, and won´t dilute your drink. And when you´re done just rinse and put back in the freezer ready for next time! But what about that fine bottle of Rioja you’ve been saving? How do you avoid the faff of decanting when all you want to do is enjoy your vino? Splash out 44€ on the Decantus Wine Aerator and your wish is our command… Simply hold the Decantus over your glass and pour – the result is instantly aerated wine. Apparently utilising the Bernoulli Effect by allowing the wine to flow through two internal diagonal tubes, hence reducing the pressure

and drawing in air is the magic responsible for your glass of perfect plonk. Cheers! But what if you fancy a drinking game with a difference? Well, the 34€ Don´t Break The Bottle Original could be the answer to tormenting your tipsy guests. Simply enclose the bottle of choice in the puzzle´s grasp and present to your victim. At first glance the solution appears simple – but don´t be fooled, it´s not as easy as it looks! A few failed attempts later and your victim will be begging for the solution, or a hammer… Even better if you trap a cheap bottle of El Plonko in the Don´t Break The Bottle Original, when your victim finally releases it they may not even notice they´ll be so pleased to have got it out! The Inspectors Verdict: Vino versatility is the name of the game – and the gadgets above deliver in spades (or glasses to be more precise). Unfortunately they can´t help with the fact modern bottles only seem to contain two glasses, or that the Wine Fairy is a regular visitor. Now where´s that bottle trapped in the bottle puzzle… Visit www.gadget-hound.co.uk to purchase the featured gadgets. All prices quoted include delivery to Spain (subject to exchange rate fluctuations).

Life horoscopes Beware a strong shift as Mars ends retrograde by Directing in a doleful Virgo. This is not a time to make any changes to your plans and a good time to make stringent checks on anything currently on the agenda. Later on in the week a defiant and scheming Mercury enters to make sure that you get the attention and promotion that you so badly need, right now. The Sun is poised to enter and your fifth house of psychic energies comes to the fore this week as you get a bee in your bonnet about something. Your gut reaction tells you that something isn’t as it should be, and no matter how you try to eliminate this from your mind you are receiving a distinct message that needs to be acted upon; so you can nip things in the bud. Venus is at your side, and it would be a great time to set things right with friends and family on all levels. Sending love may not be enough right now to set some pressing matters right and to dissolve the past. A lot of water has passed under the bridge, but there comes a time to bring harmony and forgiveness into the bargain; it is time to look forward at last. The Direct energies of a re tracking Mars and the influence of wily Pluto see you out on a limb somewhat. There is work to be done and it may seem to you that you are being tested in every way since nothing seems to be going right. Putting your best foot forward, and taking responsibility to the limits will save the day, and show others what you can do. Taking a backseat isn’t a way out of something that has been gaining momentum; and in which you sincerely wish you had never been a part of. But you are in this up to your neck, and the need to steer things to a safe harbour should be your number one preference right now, rather than trying to analyse, in hindsight, why things went wrong in the first place. The Mars Direct leaves you understandingly shaken but not stirred. It would be imprudent to make any clever moves right now as authority is suspended and there comes a time to reflect, without committing to something you will late regret. Leave any decisions until midweek when carefree and fearless Capricornian energy floods you with good ideas and momentum. Saturn remains in tight control of your actions this week. Bringing in wisdom and faith on all useable levels means that finally you can clear away the clutter of past objectives and focus well and truly on what is to come and what is best for you and those around you. Take care to see you meet your objectives, but open doors too to what could come from this. Mars in Virgo sets the cat amongst the pigeons as someone is about to be shown up for what they really are. You didn’t subscribe to be part of this tension and negative energies, but your involvement means that you have to be, above all, true to yourself and resourceful and trustworthy to the core. If someone doesn’t want to play ball then why waste any more time with them? Planetary influences see you flirting dangerously with your innermost emotions this week, and putting on a brave face so that nobody notices. Your independence brings you a right to be wrong sometimes, so stop trying to be that perfect person and know that you cannot be blamed for what you think are mistakes, but others see as your courage to face facts. Pluto enters into Capricorn bringing analysis and delay into something best left spontaneous and light. There are conflicts of interest here, and your first and vital instincts are what’s needed to get this show on the road. You do not do this to bask in praise and self indulgence, so keep up the good work, those who appreciate you know how hard all this is. Clear Aquarian energies are mindfully inspiring and are pointing you in all the right directions. Trouble is then that others cannot see what is obviously staring them in the face, and are reacting insensitively to your overtures. It could be a solution to just walk away with your head held high, but you are far too stubborn to compromise when you see only the truth. Under the stern influence of Chiron it is fair to say that your psychic centres are well and truly open and awaiting further instructions. This is not a time to dither, but to strike while the iron is hot; especially when a personal project is in view and your inspiring energies are sought to make a difference. Be decisive and very proud of your effective talents for once.

Going back? It was Dusty Springfield who sang, “I think I’m going back to the things I learned so well in my youth.” Our brains are highly adept at having to go back to various times of our lives, for whatever reason, and under our own conscious control. Sometimes we are led back to past times as something cues us in, revoking a memory, and these memories can be good or bad. Recently I sat pouring over old photo albums, finding photos a very quick way back to way back then. As we laugh at hairstyles and fashions we begin to picture and assume our life as it was with each and every turn of the page. Friends we may have had and lost, places we visited, and our own local history is coded and stored in just a photo. The colour of the picture may have faded somewhat over the years, but the token of nostalgia waves us bravely on to times when we were happy or sad, single or in love and connected or disconnected. The tapestry of life unwinds as we enter into the recesses of our minds, elevating and illuminating those pictures of the past revealing every incident or phase with a clarity and surety. Looking back at a photo of someone who has made their transition to the Spirit World gives us, whether we like it or not, a joy of our own survival, and a glimpse back at our Earthly life, as we examine our relationship with them. When we travel down Memory Lane we tune firmly into our past energies and it seems so real. It can also make us feel just how far we have moved on in life. Help us to see the changes that we have

made, why we have moved on, and what priorities were on the cards then, and now. Our mind is a camera and it can take us back, since we take automatic photos all through our lives without film or processing other than our recall and intelligence to steer us the right way. If I ask you to you could remember at will a time when you were very sad; imagine a scene right now as you can take yourself back. The mental photo is there and whilst we have the ability to use that wonderful brain capacity we have then recall and the camera in our brains is activated to reveal all. Spirit photos are changing very much these days. I have had many orb pictures sent to me, and a very recent large orb was taken last month, with a mobile telephone camera; as it covered my entire head after an exhausting three days of work at a Spiritual Fair in Norway. I must admit that there are no reasons for why an orb appears. These orbs are Spiritual helpers, Angels, or Guides all captured on film in this special way. My greatest orbs were snapped in the Viking Museum in Oslo when three large and two small orbs hovered above the prow of a Viking ship. The Guide in attendance told me that discovered in this ship were the bodies of a family, two parents and three children! Hopefully in the future we will all become more Spiritual as this is our prescribed destiny, and it will start to show. Only then, and not for long, will I think, I’m going back!

Love & Light... Kenny Corris

Postbag Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com Kenny I had so much grief at the recent passing of my Mother. Though I was there at the end she didn’t acknowledge me, and we had our difficulties over the years which makes it even harder for me. What can I do to tell her that I do love her and that I miss her so very much? Caitlin.K. Hi Caitlin. I am sorry to hear of the passing of your Mother. I know that this will have been a traumatic time for you, and I am glad that you feel better for being present at her passing; which is never an easy time. Your Mother died loving you and since you love her too any issues from the past have no barrier between a Mother and her Daughter now. I very much doubt she was able to acknowledge anyone at this the time of her departure to another World. If you want to get close to your Mother it will take a little while until she is ready and prepared. Tell her that you love her and miss her, and ask her to send you a sign when she is ready to talk. Timing is normally 6 months from the date of passing. Lighting a candle for her from time to time may help the situation, and you can continue to talk to her, telling her the truth, sending love. If you have continued problems please make contact with me again. All will be very well.

If it’s your birthday this week

A decisive and highly rewarding astrological year awaits you, but it is up to you to make of it what you will, and to pull out all the stops. You are close to achieving that which you deserve and positive energies are showing you the ropes already!

World Premiere of the VW eco up! GAZMOBILE PRESENTED the latest generation of natural gas/ biogas vehicles from automakers Fiat, Mercedes, Opel and Volkswagen at the 82nd International Motor Show, PalexpoGeneva this month. Volkswagen unveiled the VW eco up - its smallest model powered by natural gas/biogas with remarkably low CO2 emissions. In the family van category, Opel presented the new Opel Zafira Tourer 1.6 Turbo CNG ecoFLEX (110 kW/150 hp), outstanding for its autonomy range of 530km with natural gas/biogas, plus the additional petrol tank autonomy. The VW eco up will be available on the Swiss market at the end of this year. Its CO2 emissions have been reduced to 71 g/km based on 90/10 mix (63 g/km on 80/20 mix) with an average fuel consumption of 2.9 kg of natural gas/biogas per 100 km - equivalent to 4.2 litres of petrol, with a 50 kW/68 hp engine (provisional data by VW). FIAT 500 TWIN ERDGAS TURBO The Fiat 500 TwinAir erdgas Turbo was launched last year, impressing consumers with CO2 emissions at 72 g/km based on 90/10 mix (64 g/km on 80/20 mix) and the winner of the Ecomobiliste 2011 classification, of the Association transports et environnement (ATE). Thanks to its TwinAir 2-cylinder turbo-charged engine, the starting power of 62 kW/85 hp is

maintained during 100 km with a consumption of 2.9 kg of natural gas/biogas. FAMILY VANS AND LIMOUSINES: OPEL AND MERCEDES Opel presented the new Opel Zafira Tourer 1.6 CNG Turbo ecoFLEX (110 kW/150 hp) offering 530 km running on natural gas/biogas, plus the additional petrol tank autonomy. The CO2 emissions stand at 116 g/km based on 90/10 mix (103 g/km on 80/20 mix). In the high middle range, gazmobile offers the Mercedes Benz E200 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY (120 kW/163 hp) featuring extra injectors and an electronic pressure regulator: CO2 emissions are 140 g/km based on 90/10 mix (125 g/km on 80/20mix). BIOGAS RACE CAR The VW Scirocco R-Cup with a turbocharged 2 litre 4-cylinder engine combines power with environmental respect, with CO2 emissions reduced by 80%. Its ‘push to pass’ system increases engine power output by 50 hp in 10 seconds. Hybrid natural gas/biogas vehicles have guaranteed autonomy under all circumstances.

From the small city car to luxury limousine, saloons and family vans, automakers now offer more and more factory models. During the 82nd International Motor Show a selection from this wide assortment of vehicles from the most important car manufacturers was presented to the public.

Share or Abono?

Noel’s world of golf By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Campo de Golf El Plantio 639 730 891

THERE HAS never been more availability at our golf clubs for either annual membership or for purchasing a share. There is absolutely no doubt that these are the most economical ways of playing golf as long as you play more than once per week. The idea of purchasing a share to many is the preferred way as many see this as a way of guaranteeing a return on investment and with so many expatriates returning to their homelands availability and price are about as good as they have been for a number of years from the purchaser’s perspective. Being a shareholder though is not always what it seems. At many golf clubs it is only the golf club that you are buying the share in and not the golf course itself. This is where you are very vulnerable; as we all know honesty amongst many of our hosts is not high on the list of priorities. Owning a share in a golf club that has no golf course is of little or no value if the course owners decide to sell the course to someone else; as happened just a few years ago. So caution is the way forward here and the advice of a solicitor an absolute must. Shareholders can also have some hidden responsibilities compared to the annual member or Abono holder who just has to pay his annual fee and

turn up to play. Some golf courses seem to continually ask shareholders for more money for course and clubhouse improvements with seemingly monotonous regularity. Even if you do not agree with the changes proposed you are responsible for your percentage and at times failure to comply will see membership of what you consider your own golf club is suspended. So being a shareholder is not always a good option although in many cases in recent years shares have been sold at substantial profits and the opportunity is there again now as long as the risks are fully explained to you and acceptable. In comparison many see the Abono as a way to play golf as it cost far less. The problem here though that there is no return on investment in terms of cash but there are substantial savings to be made as long as you play more than weekly. Abonos also only offer value for money when you add up how much you have to pay each time you play. You may be better off going to a course where you pay your annual fee and no more for each game you play. Bargains are there to be had; you need to consider your options bearing in mind the mentality of many of our Spanish hosts when it comes to honesty.

THE US MASTERS is the major championship that many golfers look to as the real start of the golfing season on the various tours around the World. This year’s event was looked forward to as one where there was the chance for practically anyone who qualified to have a chance of winning and was therefore probably the most open championship since Tiger Woods hit the scene so spectacularly in 1997. The Augusta National Golf Club this year produced a course that once again saw many changes from twelve months ago with several changes to greens and the planting of many more massive trees to make some tee shots more difficult. They certainly made the challenge to the game’s greatest players much more difficult than it has been in the

past. The extra challenge of perhaps the fastest ever greens at The Masters on Sunday also ensured that all aspects of the winner’s game would be severely tested as it should for one of sport’s biggest prizes. As the tournament unfolded over the first two days in quickly became apparent that the top ranked players were not going to have it all their own way and several go to have the weekend off and spend Easter with their families. On Friday evening the cut came and only 62 players made it through to the weekend. Hopes of a European victory were high as we saw Garcia, Westwood, Hanson, Harrington, Rose etc. all challenging. The most surprising perhaps being the performance of Westwood who going into Sunday’s final round had 21 putts more than second placed Mickelson over the first three rounds. Peter Hanson

was the man who led the charge but early bogeys saw his challenge disappear as Louis Oosthuizen hit one of the most spectacular shots in Masters history as he holed his second on the par 5 second for an albatross two on the par five. Oosthuizen remained in control until a late run of four consecutive birdies up to hole 16 from Bubba Watson caught the South African. Extra holes ensued with hole ten being the decider as Watson, who never hits a straight shot on purpose, hit a spectacular shot from the trees onto the tenth green to set up an easy par for victory. Watson became the 14th different winner of a major championship in as many events since the demise of a certain Tiger. Who said the game would be poorer without him at the top? The Final Whistle

IMAGINE FOR a moment that you are a high powered executive at BBC Sport and you discover that your expensive car has a fault. You take it to a garage and the mechanic says it’s an easy fix but that he’d like his new man to take a look it. “Is he qualified?” you ask. “Not really,” says the experienced grease monkey, “but he has done a lot of driving and he knows what a socket set looks like.” You’d be straight out the door wouldn’t you? This may all sound a bit farfetched but this is exactly what BBC Sport served up for us last weekend when it employed the former England cricket captain and Test Match Special summariser Michael Vaughan as the green-side interviewer at the Masters. Don’t these people get it? We don’t care who the interviewer is, we just want someone who can elicit a few decent quotes from his or her subjects without dropping a clanger. Having worked for BBC Sport for much of my adult life, I always look to defend the corporation when I can but I can’t this time round as the BBC’s reasoning behind Vaughan’s appointment was that ‘he plays a lot of golf and knows the subject’. Sorry, but that’s laughable. I mean, I

do a lot of cooking, know what a TV camera looks like and can do a pretty decent Essex accent but it doesn’t make me Jamie Oliver. Indeed, just because you do a few days punditry here and there does not automatically make you a broadcaster. You have to earn that right. Equally, posing a few questions to Bubba, Tiger and Lee does not mean you can add the word ‘journalist’ to your CV. BBC Sport has got it dead right with athletics where Phil Jones is the man with the roving microphone. Whilst not a big name, he’s a trained journalist who regularly gets great interviews while never putting a foot wrong. Unlike Vaughan who described his own performance on Sunday as a “stinker” having suggested to Tiger Woods that he’d won the Augusta event 3 times when he has in fact won it on 4 occasions. So please BBC, there’s enough adulation of socalled celebrities in your light entertainment department. How about we keep it out of the new sports office in Salford eh? FA JOKERS Who are these people who sit on Football Association disciplinary committees? This week, Mario Balotelli received no punishment for

THIS WEEK’S competition was the 2nd round of the Summer Championship, a series of 9 matches with the best 6 results to count. The venue again was the Eden canal stretch of the Rio Segura. The bamboos are now starting to grow but it is still strange seeing everybody fishing up and down the river. It will not be long before that goes and the canes will have reclaimed their standing on the bank. The fishing is getting better overall, but we still had several blanks! The river again was flowing with pace where this water has come from, who knows, but all that is happening is it is being given to the sea? TOP RODS ON THE DAY 1st Ian (Irish Wizard) Dalzell, fishing the pole using maggot with 7.56 kilos 2nd Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare, fishing the pole using bread and corn with 6.96 kilos 3rd Clive (Golf No More) Cleghorn, fishing the pole using bread and corn with 6.62 kilos PLEASE NOTE The club has some vacancies at present: if you are interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 96 672 9293 or 603 535 771. CHARITY MATCH The club holds an annual charity match for a different charity each year. Although all charities are deserving some are more so and this year’s charity is one of them. The charity is ASOCIACION EMAUS founded in 1979. This charity looks after children from the day they are born up to the age of 6 years, at which time they move to a further Asociacion. The government, due to austerity measures, has cut all funding and the charity is now struggling with utility bills and basic items. Within the club on a weekly basis we are providing some basic items such as toilet rolls; soap powder; shampoo; soap; shower gel; tooth brushes; tooth paste; nappies; baby milk etc. If you feel that you could help, even if it is only one item to give to the above charity, please see visit www.emausongs.es who will give you the nearest location for this charity. Thank you.

his studs-up tackle on Alex Song as referee Martin Atkinson said he and an assistant saw the incident take place. In which case, the FA should be taking retrospective action against the man in black for not sending Balotelli off on the spot. Meanwhile, QPR’s Shaun Derry tackles Ashley Young, who is offside, there’s

minimal contact (the sort my 7 year old survives without incident in the play ground every day), Young does his best Tom Daley impression and Derry is sent off. And the same FA panel upholds his one match ban. I know what FA stands for but I tell you this, it’s got FA to do with justice.

ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS Supplied by Terry Screen The third round of the spring series was fished on the Embalse de Ojos at Blanca. The water was quite low when we arrived and rose some 25 - 30cm during the match which did very little to improve results at this venue, as it is notorious for returning more blanks than catches. As usual it lived up to its name of ‘Blanca’ with seven out of eleven anglers not weighing in. The disappointment of not catching is somewhat made up for by the stunning scenery as this is one of the more picturesque venues that we fish with the Embalse surrounded by mountains covered in pine trees and the river running through at the back of these waters. 1st Lenny (Ex Cultural Attaché) Bolton fishing the pole using paste and pellet with 9.800 kilos 2nd Ian (The Irish Wizard) Dalzell fishing the feeder using maggot and paste with 4.780 kilos 3rd Mick (The Arsenal) Hill fishing the feeder using pellet and paste with 3.560 Kilos All details are available from www.abbeyangling.com or Terry Screen: 96 532 8368. Anglers Together THE OBJECTIVE of Anglers Together has been reached (which was to introduce anglers to each other). Now that newcomers to Spain are few and far between, we have decided that monthly meetings are serving no useful purpose and the friendships that have been made over the past 4 years are now firmly established. We will continue to provide information through our email address if contacted but there will be no membership renewals in May. Thanks to all past members for their support. Open bowling victory for La Marina

THE LA Marina Bowls Club came out victorious at last week’s Vistabella Bowls Open, which was sponsored by Jennifer Cunningham and Associates. The event, which took place at the Vistabella Bowls Club, located in the Entrenaranjos urbanisation near San Miguel de Salinas and Los Montesinos, was a three day open and included 24 teams from all over the area. There was “brilliant” bowling witnessed throughout the event, which was organised by Vistabella’s Competition Secretary, Peter Wright, whose wife, coincidently is being nursed by Jennifer’s charity Paul Cunningham Nurses. The semi-finals included two teams from La

FC Torrevieja news

TORRY WON their last home game on the Thursday before Easter against Borriol 3-2. Two goals from Abel put Torry in the driving seat but Borriol clawed their way back into the game and drew level with a goal just before half-time and another part way through the second half. A last minute goal from Rafa sealed victory for Torry and moved them up to 6th place in the table only 4 points off the final play-off place. On Wednesday evening Torry were away to Castellon and hopefully got a positive result to keep them in contention. On Sunday at 5pm Torry are at home to mid-table Athletico Saguntino. Make it to the game if you can.

Marina, one from Pilar de la Horadada and one from Quesada and after the gripping final between one of the La Marina teams and Pilar de la Horadada, which all went down the final end, La Marina came out victorious, winning 12-7. Jennifer told RTN: “It has been a great event and I feel very privileged to have been asked to sponsor it.” Membership at the Vistabella Bowls Club is available to everyone and this friendly and welcoming club is located in beautiful surroundings, overlooking the Orihuela countryside.
