by jack troughton EUROVISION WINNERS Cheryl Baker and Mike Nolan have been shaping up on the Costa Blanca ready for the launch of a new album and new beginning for the band.

As Bucks Fizz they tasted glory in 1981 when Making Your Mind Up won the competition and changed their lives – while the ‘skirt rip’ in the dance routine became an iconic pop moment.

Next month Cheryl, Mike and friend and colleague Jay Aston release the album ‘Fame and Fortune?’ as OBF – following a legal battle they can no longer use the title Original Bucks

Fizz – and want to be in tip top condition for the rigours of promoting the record.

The recording features six original tracks and six familiar Bucks Fizz songs but recorded “in a completely different way” and full of strong harmonies from the vocal band.

Fittingly, RTN caught up with Cheryl and Mike at the Champagne Bar at Javea’s Arenal Beach, although because of their fitness regime, the strongest drink in front of them was sparkling water.

They reformed as a threesome in 2004 and last year cel-

ebrated the 30th anniversary of winning the Eurovision Song Contest with a “really memorable” sell-out show at the London Palladium – showing the band was as popular as ever.

Mike said: “We were really surprised, everyone came to it” and Cheryl added: “Take That were playing the same night in London so we thought no one would come.”

Normally the three members of OBF do interviews together but Jay was unable to make the trip to Spain – although she is in touch via texts.

Health tourism article provokes concern by louise clarke

ADVICE DESIGNED to help British expats understand the Spanish healthcare system was criticised in a Spanish national newspaper last week.

The article suggested that the British Government was proactively encouraging British residents to come to Spain and take advantage of its healthcare. The article in ABC stated: “Health tourism is just one of the burdens carried by the Spanish health system, whose standards of excellence are recognised all over the world, especially in Britain.”

The article also stated that the website openly gave information on how Brits can “enjoy the Spanish health system as any taxpayer” and that Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy’s main objective is to curb medical tourism like this in order to reduce the deficit.

The paper then went on to say that here in the Valencia region, an estimated 800,000 British patients use the healthcare system at a cost of €15million. It then went onto say that the ‘UK in Spain’ website openly promotes the €90 per month Valencia Healthcare fee, stating: “The fee is well below the cost of private insurance in the UK and is acknowledged by the advice produced by the Embassy.”

As you can imagine, the article provoked an immediate response from the British Embassy in Madrid. The statement said: “The British Government does not condone or encourage “health tourism”. The aim of the advice provided by the British Embassy is to ensure that British nationals in Spain, whether tourists or residents, comply fully with Spanish and EU legislation in exercising both their rights and their obligations.”

REIMBURSEMENT The statement also said that any advice is in the interest of British visitors so they know how to access the Spanish healthcare system correctly. This prevents unnecessary administrative costs; ensuring that the UK can reimburse Spain accurately and efficiently in line with EU legislation.

It stated: “Our website advice makes clear that the EHIC does not cover those who come to Spain for the specific purpose of health treatment.”

It added that there are also many British nationals living in Spain who are entitled to access the Spanish healthcare system, just as Spanish nationals resident in the UK are entitled to access the British healthcare system.

“The aim of our advice is to ensure that they do so in full compliance with Spanish legislation, including registration on the ‘Padron’.”

As a final comment, it concluded: “British visitors make up 24% of the total number of tourists visiting Spain. The UK contribution to the Spanish tourism industry is around €10bn annually, approximately 1% of Spain’s GDP. The British Government is committed to ensuring that this important bilateral relationship is underpinned by correct, legal and efficient access to healthcare in line with EU legislation.”

Town gets tough on dogs

by JAck troughton DOG OWNERS are being targeted in a new high profile campaign aimed at making them more responsible for their pets in public places.

Posters and leaflets are being distributed around Calpe reminding owners in three languages of the local laws concerning animals – dog mess is a particular problem and regularly features in the letters pages of RTN as both an unpleasant sight and a health hazard.

The leaflets and posters feature a picture of a pooch with a speech bubble simply saying: “I like a clean Calpe” – it further warns owners are responsible for ‘pooper scooping’ after their pets and underlines the point by stating: “For him it is a necessity, for you an obligation.”

And Calpe Town Hall says that if a dog fouls the street and owners do not clean up the poop they face fines of up to 300€.

The campaign also reminds dog owners of other duties specified in local by-laws: dogs are not allowed on the beach at any time of the year; dogs should be kept on a lead at all times in public; dogs classified as a dangerous breed or animals over 25kg should be muzzled in public; and animals in bars or restaurants are only allowed on the premises with permission of the proprietor and should be muzzled.

there was no EU wide directive. “For example, in northern Europe there are places where dogs are still allowed on beaches and still allowed to walk in towns off the lead but this is not the case in Calpe and dogs are never allowed on the beach,” she said.

“And I am concerned about reports I have received about people having dogs on their laps in local restaurants and feeding them titbits off their plates – it’s absolutely disgusting.”

Carole, who is a dog owner, added: “People must start acting responsibly, because it is out of control.”

And as part of the campaign the public is being asked to report offenders to the local police by calling 96 583 9000 and saying, for example, “Hay perros en la playa” (There are dogs on the beach).

Calpe gets twitchy

BIRD LOVERS on the Costa Blanca have been flocking to Calpe hoping to catch a glimpse of a rare Glossy Ibis, a migratory wading bird. Bird watchers – known as ‘twitchers’ – have descended on Las Salinas, the saltwater lagoon, where the bird has been seen for the first time. The Glossy Ibis, Plegadis falcinellus, is in decline but there is a newly established colony in Southern Spain. It is not listed as an endangered species but classed as vulnerable. Las Salinas is an important staging post for migratory birds but it is understood it is the first time the Glossy Ibis has called in and the sighting of the juvenile bird has prompted much excitement amongst ornithologists. Known in Britain as the Black Curlew, breeding birds have reddish brown bodies and glossy green wings but non-breeding adults and young birds are much darker and duller in colour. The Glossy Ibis winters in Africa and migrates to warm areas in Europe to inhabit wetlands, lagoons and marshy lakeshores. It also can be found in Africa, Australia and the Atlantic and Caribbean regions of the Americas.

King brakes hip whilst hunting elephants

by Louise Clarke IN TYPICAL Spanish fashion, the jokes are already in abundance about King Juan Carlos and his recent trip to Botswana. The 74-yearold monarch is currently recovering following an emergency hip operation after he fell down a step going to the loo during an elephant hunting trip.

When news leaked about His Majesty’s trip, Spanish citizens were up in arms, some even called for his immediate abdication. Many wondered how the state could fund a jaunt allegedly costing in the region of 30,000€, so that the trigger-happy King can get his sick kicks from killing elephants, when the country is on its knees having just announced a further €10 million in cuts to education.

UNETHICAL Juan Carlos has been a keen big game hunter since he was a child. In 1956, his younger brother, the Infante Alfonso died of a gunshot wound in Estoril, Portugal, with Juan Carlos as the only witness. In Romania in 2004, he and his entourage were accused of shooting nine bears, one of which was allegedly pregnant.

The Aves Foundation called the number of animals killed on that shoot “totally unethical.”

This latest incident comes just one week after the King’s 13-year-old grandson accidently shot himself in the foot with a gun he wasn’t legally allowed to handle and days before he was officially implicated in his son-in-law’s

dodgy dealings. In fact, the Spanish Royals are making the British Royal Family look like the Waltons at the moment!

MORAL DEGRADATION As the King was being flown home to Madrid by private jet, politicians representing all parties, with the notable exception of the PP, condemned the King’s trip. The Leader of IU said that the King showed “a lack of ethics and respect toward the many people in this country suffering a great deal.” And a spokesperson for the Catalan Republican Left publically wondered why the monarch didn’t join the national hip replacement waiting list, saying “this just highlights the monarchy’s moral degradation.”

Ironically, the King is the Honorary President for the World Wildlife Federation of Spain and members immediately called for his dismissal. Following an extraordinary session on Tuesday, the organisation amended Article 6 of their statute to enable him to step down and on Wednesday, King Juan Carlos apologised to the Spanish people for going on the hunting trip while his country was in the midst of an economic crisis. He said: “I’m very sorry, I made a mistake.

It won’t happen again.”

Is Madelaine in Malaga?

A NEW police search for Madeleine McCann has been launched near Malaga after a ‘lookalike’ was spotted. A new squad of police has been brought in to intensify the search for Madelaine McCann in the town of Nerja near Malaga after an informant tipped off Portuguese police this week that a child bearing a striking resemblance to Madelaine, missing since May 2007, had been spotted in the resort town. Fresh inquiries in Spain are being carried out by officers from the Judicial Police Central Specialised and Violent Crime Unit.

The McCanns’ Portuguese lawyer, Rogerio Alves, describes developments as a “very positive sign. Obviously the most plausible explanation for what’s happening is that information passed to or acquired by the Judicial Police in Porto has put them on the trail of something specific.”

Rajoy in Mexico to drum up support against Argentina YPF, CONTROLLED by Spanish oil company Repsol, has been under intense pressure from Argentina’s centre-left government led by President Cristina Fernandez to boost production.

On Monday Fernandez announced a 51% share takeover bid for YPF with its market value of US$10.6 billion. Its share price has plummeted following months of speculation about a state takeover. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy began an official visit to Mexico on Tuesday seeking support against the intended aggressive takeover. An Argentine government representative said on Monday that Argentina holds “no hostility” against the Spanish government but simply sought to “protect Argentina’s sovereignty” as YPF investments had not taken place as they should. Mexico has a 10% share of YPF through its state-owned company Petroleos Mexicanos. While in Mexico, Rajoy will participate in the World Economic Forum on Latin America in Puerto Vallarta to discuss steps taken to recover economy and employment in Spain.

Approval for ferry terminal The new terminal rises above moored boats

by jack troughton NEW PORT facilities at Denia scheduled to open this summer received a thumbs up from politician Jose Ciscar during a visit at the weekend.

Accompanied by Ana Kringe, the vicepresident of Council of the Valencian Government, Mr Ciscar said an investment of nearly 10.4 million euros in a new passenger terminal underlined the “commitment to the development of strategic initiatives� that were beneficial to the community.

The ground floor of the terminal of the

building houses modern ticket and check-in facilities and a cafeteria, a mezzanine level is home to offices and passengers will access ships via boarding bridges from the first floor.

It is expected 600,000 passengers a year will use the facility which will improve sea links to the Balearic Islands.

And Denia Town Hall is backing plans for a shopping mall at the port. Mayor Ana Kringe said the project would be put out to tender but the council was responding to the demand for shops and entertainment facilities.

Benidorm bookings rocket

ACCORDING TO Costa Blanca hoteliers association HOSBEC, British tourism is set to boost another super summer season with 133,400 package holidays already booked and paid for and British holiday sales in Benidorm up 3% on last year. Jet2.com was in Benidorm this week launching a new link between Alicante and Edinburgh and the outlook is certainly optimistic for a successful season. Hospitality proprietors across the Costa are looking forward to yet another perfect summer.

Renfeproposesfareincreases AS PART of a plan to save €288.4 million in operating expenses, Renfe has proposed to raise fares from May by 10 cents per commuter ticket. ‘Multiviaje’ tickets will increase by 5.74%, with conventional and high speed medium distance journeys to be ticketed with a 91 cent increase equating to 10.9%. According to sources at National Land Transport, this brings Spain more into line with other European countries including Britain, Germany and France, where fares are 25% higher. The proposal was discussed on Thursday at the Executive Committee for Economic Affairs.

by jack troughton Iain Duncan Smith said Spain was the number one country for UK citizens committing ‘abroad fraud’ - illicitly claiming benefits by pretending to live in Britain but in reality residing overseas.

And during a visit to the DWP’s Pension, Benefits and Healthcare team in Madrid, the politician warned British people living abroad not to break strict rules on what they could and could not claim – while urging law-abiding Brits to use a dedicated hotline to report benefit thieves.

Abroad fraud was estimated to cost the UK taxpayer £43 million last year and more allegations are lodged against people living in Spain than in any other foreign country.

Mr Duncan Smith said: “We are determined to clamp down on benefit fraud

abroad, which cost the British taxpayer £43 million last year. This money should be going to the people who need it most and not lining the pockets of criminals sunning themselves overseas.

CRIME “The vast majority of British people living overseas are law-abiding, but fraudulently claiming benefits while living abroad is a crime and we are committed to putting a stop to it.”

Since its launch in 2008, more than 750 calls to the Spanish hotline have resulted in criminal investigations, over 100 people have been sanctioned or prosecuted, 134 cases are under investigation and £3.1 million in overpayments have been identified and

The new health reforms revealed

HEALTH MINISTER Ana Mato unveiled detailed reforms on Wednesday in a bid to save €7,000 million in the sector representing around 10% of public health spending. The measures to be adopted by the Cabinet next Friday are structured around income, ages of patients and severity of illness and will become effective within two months.

The situation for the chronically ill remains unchanged.

However, those with incomes exceeding 100,000€ will be required to pay for 60% of their drug prescriptions with lower income brackets to pay 50%. continued from front page Mike explained: “She doesn’t want to be left out, we always try to do things as a trio – we did a radio interview and I couldn’t get there but I was listening. Jay said I couldn’t be bothered to get out of bed, so I called the station and went on air with them!”

Asked what it was like winning Eurovision – the ‘Fame and Fortune?’ is released to coincide with this year’s competition – Cheryl answered: “It was the moment that changed our lives. The three minutes of the song but in particular the couple of seconds it took to rip the skirts off.”

Mike added: “We were already number five in the charts so I thought it didn’t matter, but when we got there I really wanted to win.”

However, Cheryl said things immediately changed. “From the moment we won, we didn’t belong to ourselves. The first year or two we spent 10 months of the year out of the country promoting Bucks Fizz around the world.”

Mike said it was also “great fun and we laughed all the time” while he and Cheryl forged a friendship that she says has stood the test of time and never altered.

They launched the charity Headfirst, which funds research into brain damage, after the band was injured in a coach crash in December 1984. It was after the second night of a sell-out tour and a “fantastic gig” at Newcastle’s City Hall and returning to their hotel.

In roadworks, the coach was in a collision. Cheryl said: “The coach collided with a lorry, it took the side of our coach away and Mike and I flew through the windscreen – we do everything together.”

Mike said: “Cheryl and I and the driver were knocked out, we have no recollection of what happened but the people who do

remember, to this day it horrifies them.”

Cheryl said surgeon Mr Anthony Strong, who brought Mike back to life, said there was not enough research into brain injuries so they launched the charity. “It is still going and still making lots of money.”

And she said she ran the London Marathon last year and running the New York Marathon this year in support of the Kent children’s hospice Demelza House.

The pair came to be in Spain after being offered the chance to work out with Famously Fit and the Profigura Gym in Javea and turn back time under the

watchful eye of Ann Mather, celebrity nutrition advisor and co-owner of the gym, and personal trainer Sarah Donohue, a world fitness champion and champion powerboat racer.

Cheryl said: “It is very much like boot camp – the diet has been fantastic but it is the exercise that gets up my nose. It’s been a killer.”

Mike joked of the three daily sessions over the week: “It’s all go, go, go.

It is sadistic.”

Should be encouraging people EVERY WEEK in the papers there are two pages of dog sanctuaries begging people to give a dog a home. So when my old dog was put to sleep I decided I would find a new playmate for my young dog and rang a local dog charity, where the guy said: “Yes I have hundreds of dogs looking for a home.” But when I went to find one I discovered they were for sale and not to be adopted (excuse is to cover costs?) But surely by taking a dog I would reduce their costs?

Not getting the same benefits

I READ with interest Noel’s article in the RTN 29th March regarding ‘Do It Yourself’ - I agree with the comments you make.

It is a certain fact that the resident golfer here in Spain is the most loyal to golf courses: he/she will play all through the year and yet cannot get the same benefits as offered to Tour Operators, even when playing with Golf Societies.

Some tour operators rely on golf societies for their business, when the golf societies should benefit from the same rates as they do. At one golf course conglomerate they refused a local league an equal rate to Tour Operators in fear of upsetting them, despite the fact that the League guaranteed 256 green fees in two months.

There are some courses that have foresight and do offer Golf Societies incentives, but the resident golfer has to go to an agent to get cheaper green fees: that’s not fair or good business sense.

Agents should be informed that their remit is to get in the tourist golfer, not profiteer on the resident golfer.

They should be encouraging people to give a dog a home not selling them for around 100€ each. I did consider getting two as I have large garden but with economy and pensions I cannot afford to buy one: do the people who run these places really want to find homes for the dogs or just make money? They can wrap it up with fancy words and jargon but they are still selling the dogs, not giving them a chance of a loving home.

Putting the cat among the pigeons At the risk of ´putting the cat amongst the chickens´ I write to say that, unfortunately, I have very little sympathy for the Bar and Restaurant owners of Benidorm who are presently whinging about the rise in allinclusive hotels. The time is surely near when the cafe and bar owners have got to unite and decide exactly what future they want to see for the Town.

I have, in the past, criticised the advent of all-inclusive hotels but having once again witnessed the annual spectacle of large groups of drunken, illiterate British yobs wandering the Town falling out of various pubs, is it any wonder at all that normal holidaymakers would wish to remain in their hotels?

Perhaps someone could explain to me just exactly why genuine holidaymakers should have to be subjected to a barrage of beggars, con-artists, pickpockets, drunken abuse and missiles thrown from hotel balconies when walking the streets.

As for entertainment, well, if visitors believe that the days of good clean family entertainment are still with us then I feel they are going to be sadly disappointed, with pornography seeming to be the order of the day.

It seems to me that many bar owners are quite happy to rake in the euros catering for the dregs of society, with complete disregard for nearby residents or passers-by in the streets, but this can only be shortlived however, as soon there will not be any nearby residents and very few pedestrians.

Unless the British bars and clubs in the Town, in co-operation with the Town Council, can come up with something soon more appealing to the majority of visitors to Benidorm, namely the families and retirees, then I am afraid these Bars and Clubs will soon be gone - and good riddance to them.

It would be interesting to know just what proportion of holidaymakers here long for the return of Benidorm of some 10 years ago when I first came here, when the streets were regularly cleaned of rubbish and also the dross that walks them.

Bad behaviour

I READ with horror of the impending arrival of hoards of Russians to the Costas. In my personal experience, and that of many friends, they are the rudest people ever. They pile their plates with enough food for 10 people, push past on stairs with no thought of anyone else and are generally rude and ill-mannered. Many of my friends have experienced holidays in countries such as Bulgaria and Egypt where this behaviour leaves a very nasty memory and where they are almost hated by the natives of those countries who have to serve them. The only thing they seem to have is money to spend. Please don’t let them overrun the Costas too! Maybe some Russian may answer through your letters explaining why his or her countrymen act like this because it is unacceptable to normal people.

The meeting, which was coordinated by members of the Guardia Civil, Local Police and the Neighbourhood Watch Association, aimed to inform all residents of the effectiveness of surveillance in order to reduce crime in the municipality. Held at the town’s Integrated Security Centre, the meeting attracted dozens of residents, many of whom were foreign residents including British and German expats.

The Mayor of Pilar de la Horadada told attendees: “The purpose of this meeting is to inform our citizens of the actions that are being taken

to coordinate surveillance issues in the less populated areas of the municipality as well as working with residents in the coastal zone and Pinar de Campoverde to ensure that their neighbours’ homes, many of which are holiday homes and are unoccupied permanently, are being checked to prevent unwanted intrusion.” He added that Local Police officers will be redeployed to those areas and are will be at the residents’ disposal. He added: “There will be a permanent base for the Local Police in Pinar de Campoverde as well as another permanent base for officers monitoring the coast at Torre de la Horadada and Mil Palmeras starting from next week.”

Busot Animal Rescue Centre has been chosen as the charity for the area and is determined to raise cash – 15% will go to Caritas, chosen by the radio station, while the remained to feed the animals cared for by BARC. The event begins at 11.15am at the Poli Bar, Busot, and Mayor Ale-

jandro Morant will start the walk, which will be escorted by local police and take in all the bars in the village, ending at El Raco – where there will be music, fun and games for all the family.

Entry is 5€ and sponsorship forms are available from the Lucas, El Raco and Amigas Bars – or simply sign up on the day.

Organisers hope people will walk in optional fancy dress and bring their pets along with them for a fun day out.

BARC’s Ann Abrahams told RTN: “We work 365 days a year taking care of unwanted and abandoned animals in the Busot area. Please sponsor a walker or a dog, or just join in and do the walk.

“This is going to be a great day out and one not to be missed – we are delighted to have been chosen as the designated charity for our area, communities all over the Costa Blanca will start their walks at 11.15am, making this a massive charity event.”

By Louise Clarke THE MAYOR of Redován, Emilio Fernandez, collected an award this week after his municipality won Fairy’s Most Innovative Town of Spain. The Mayor was handed his award at a glittering ceremony, held in Madrid.

Redován became the winner after three months of voting, and was shortlisted with two other municipalities, both of which are in the Valencia Region; Barriol and La Romana.

The prize was awarded to the town that had made the most innovative changes during the last 30 years and wins prize money of 15,000€. The final votes came during the month of March after an open competition was held on Facebook. Fernandez told RTN that the prize money will go towards hiring 15 people for a month; all of whom

will be members of Redován families that are living in a critical economic situation. The Redován Mayor thanked Fairy for the prize and all the people of Redován for their support during the competition.

Poisoned pets

PET OWNERS are warned to be on their guard after the deaths of cats and dogs after eating strychnine bait in the countryside. SEPRONA, the environmental and animal protection wing of the Guardia Civil, has launched an investigation after the deaths of several animals – believed to have been poisoned. Hunters are suspected of leaving the poison, wrapped in meat, in an illegal method of controlling the fox population, which preys on rabbits. Calpe Town Hall issued the warning after the deaths of animals in the Quisi Barranco in the Empedrola area of the town. Unfortunately, it is not an isolated problem and similar alerts regarding poisoning have been made along the coast over the years. It is understood one dog died after its owners walked their pet in the area and drank water from the barranco – sparking fears it could be contaminated. The town hall has urged owners to use exercise “extreme caution” when out with their pets.

PRIME MINISTER David Cameron told the world it was under starter’s orders for the London 2012 Olympics on Wednesday – marking just 100 days to go until “the greatest show on earth”.

He said the UK capital was unique in the modern history of the sporting extravaganza as the only city to host the Games on three occasions – previously in 1908 and 1948.

“These Games – and this summer – will be a proud moment for Britain. We will not only be staging what we’re determined will be the best Olympics ever, but also celebrating the 60-year reign of Her Majesty the Queen, the second longest serving monarch on the planet,” said the Premier.

“I know Britain will be looking its best.

We’ve built brilliant new venues – on time and within budget. We have got our city ready, our transport systems in place, and we are looking forward to welcoming the world.”

Mr Cameron said he believed the Games were about two things. Sport was at the heart of the great competition and afterwards, when the events were over and medals won, he was determined 2012 would go on changing lives for the better in a “vital legacy”.

MAGIC He said when London won its bid, the UK was told it would breathe “distinctive magic” into the Olympics “and we are making sure that happens.”

The Prime Minister added: “This summer when athletes and visitors arrive, they will find a whole new quarter of London around the Olympic Park in the east of the city. It’s been a powerhouse of regeneration and when the games are over, it will be the site of new homes, business and jobs.”

He said the Olympics was also inspiring and creating opportunities for youngsters to play

Spanish Army under fire in court

THE SUPREME Court has upheld the penalty of expulsion imposed on a serving sergeant in the Spanish Army who used cocaine regularly and ordered soldiers under his command in the Field Artillery Regiment number 20 in Zaragoza to procure the drug for his consumption. According to his own statement from September2007 until February 2008 he asked several soldiers in his regiment to provide him with cocaine. In a separate case, another army sergeant has been sentenced to three years in prison for sexual assaults on eight women under his command.

Pilots’ strike causing heavy losses

ON MONDAY Iberia operated 63% of 343 scheduled flights, following the cancellation of 128 services (representing 37%) every Friday and Monday through to 20th July.

The call of the thirty-day pilots’ strike, which began on Monday 9th April, is a continuation of the twelve made between December and February to protest against the formation of low cost subsidiary airline Iberia Express, which began operations on 25th March. The twelve days of strikes have cost the company a loss of €36 million - €3 million for each day - so the new series of strikes could cause losses of a further €90 million. The first day of the strike coincided with Easter Monday, while the final day will take place at the height of the summer season. Minister of Development Ana Pastor has called on Iberia and pilots’ union Sepla to meet for further discussion.

The famous JAM Experiment PSYCHOLOGISTS MAKING a study of why more people are not switching electricity providers, when there are obvious benefits, came up with some very interesting information. It seems the main reason is - there is simply too much choice.

Choice aversion was measured by psychologists in the famous ‘jam experiment’ - people were offered a free sample of jam in a supermarket. When the jam display

contained only six types of jam, about 30% of people went on to buy some. But when the jam display contained 24 types of jam, only about 3% went on to buy some.

Basically, when given too much choice those who are looking for a better deal either give up before they start or end up with only some of the gains from switching. Some people even end up worse off.

Of course, living in a foreign country presents its own set of issues. The

language barrier means most people cannot simply pick up the phone and if they could, they then have ‘mañana’ syndrome to deal with.

Bishop says therapy can cure homosexuality

THE CONTROVERSIAL Bishop of Alcala de Henares, Juan Antonio Reig Pla, has stated that many cases of people attracted to others of the same sex can be “resolved positively with appropriate therapy.” He denied that his remarks were homophobic and claimed to have received “thousands of emails and letters of support” to reinforce his opinions.

Reig Pla considers that Gender ideology is becoming “obsolete” and the male and female sexual identity a product of culture controlled by political correctness. A flood of Twitter traffic called for him to step down as prelate and included observations that he is “obviously deranged.” The Administration Committee of state broadcaster RTVE is to inspect the Good Friday sermon given by the Bishop on their La2 Channel on Good Friday. And gay couples held a ‘gay Easter kiss-in’ outside the La Almudena Cathedral on Sunday in protest at the Bishop’s comments.

PEOPLE ALONG the Costas will step out on a gigantic fund raiser on Sunday 6th May as Bay Radio’s ‘Be Nice Day’ gets underway with a 5km sponsored walk.

Charities in Valencia, Alicante, Murcia and Almeria are taking part and all setting off at 11.15am when presenters Bob and Noelle start the event live on air.

And 15% of the cash raised from the walk will go to the local CARITAS, the Roman Catholic Church charity helping feed needy people hit by the current recession.

Many of those taking part are making a day of it - making the Sunday a fiesta in their communities with music and entertainment... and even more fund raising.

Be Nice Day is the brainchild of Bay Radio’s charity co-ordinator Magpie Latham who aims to “put the fun back into fund raising”.

HELP She told RTN: “In December I was trying to do something to help Caritas but it was a nightmare because head office did not know

what is happening in any particular parish.

“And speaking to some charities before Christmas, they said they were between 30% and 70% down in fund raising.

“I wanted to help lots of people at the same time and the idea of a charity walk came – different charities walking 5km and giving a minimum of 15% to Caritas but all the money raised will be staying at a local level.”

Magpie said 25 charities were on board – “there is still room for more” – and others were still waiting for the paperwork from town halls.

“British Consul Paul Rodwell has said it is a great initiative and a wonderful idea and some town halls are getting involved and mayors are very enthusiastic,” she said.

Cycle race comes to the coast

By Louise Clarke This weekend one of Spain’s most popular semi professional cycle races is coming to Orihuela Costa. The Cinturón al Sur de Alicante, will leave on its first 80 kilometre stage from Orihuela City at 4.30pm this afternoon. Traffic is expected to be disrupted in those areas as the Guardia Civil and respective Local Police forces close off the roads to allow the cyclists to pass, so please be aware.

There will be more than 150 cyclists taking part in the three day event.

This is first time in the race’s ten year history that a whole stage has been held in Orihuela Costa and is being organised with the full support of the Orihuela Town Hall. The race will be featured on Spanish national TV and Pedro Mancebo hopes that it will highlight to the nation everything that is good about Orihuela Costa. TRAVEL DOMINATED last week with Spain celebrating the 20th anniversary of the AVE high speed train, which first ran on April 14th 1992 between Madrid and Sevilla.

Driving through Spain it still seems pretty rare to see these trains, although there are now 2,600km of high speed lines, connecting 23 Spanish cities, although not Spain to Portugal for the foreseeable future as the ongoing financial crisis has put those plans on hold.

On the subject of driving I read with ‘interest’ that the DGT traffic authority expects to issue 3.8 million fines this year, collecting 410€ million in fines, with a reduced budget of 7.54%. Reports say that this will exceed the budget by 136€ million, with 20% of the fines paid online and 25% by telefono. A success story then!

Not such good news for Ryanair customers as the company has blamed UK taxes for their decision to axe a large number of flights from the John Lennon Airport in Liverpool, including our local airport Almeria.

The real story though last week was the economy, or more accurately the state of the economy and the increasing likelihood of an EU bailout for Spain.

Rajoy remains adamant that a bailout won’t be required, and approved a crackdown on the black economy in an attempt to raise confidence as well as tax income. Cash transactions are now limited to 2,500€ between companies or between an individual and a company and to 15,000€ for non-residents.

The problem facing Rajoy is an increasing lack of con-

fidence and the resulting increase in bond yields, with interest rates getting close to the levels seen in Greece, Portugal and Ireland before they required a bailout.

It seems that every day the government announces another measure including allowing tax evaders to pay 10 percent of undeclared assets, a move designed to raise 2.5 billion€.

Arguably the best news was that house prices have dropped again in Spain, with many believing that prices are more realistic now, although why anybody would want to buy a property in Spain these days is beyond me! Personally if I was an expat looking to sell a property in the UK and move to Spain I would keep my cash in the bank and take a long term rental.

The new European Succession Certificate and how this will affect future International Inheritances by

ACCORDING TO the press service of the European Parliament a legislative proposal was approved on 13th March with the intention of avoiding legal disputes and simplifying inheritance when dealing with cross border issues. In fact according to the EU around 450,000 inheritances containing an international element are managed every year.

The European Succession Certificate is being introduced (though it will not be mandatory) to protect the rights of the heirs, reduce costs and accelerate procedures.

But the most remarkable fact about this future legislation is the criteria that will be applied to determine the law applicable to each Inheritance and Succession.

1) The applicable Law for the succession will be the Law

of the deceased’s habitual residence at the time of death and therefore, the inheritance and processing (probate) will depend on the succession law of that country.

2) But, when making a Will, you can opt either for the Law of the country of habitual residence (which is likely to be the applicable Law) or for the law of your country of origin.

This rule will not apply to the UK, Ireland or Denmark This future law is already approved by the EU Parliament and now needs to be approved by the EU Council in order to become applicable and be put into force.

Mentioned also in previous articles this new regulation will affect millions of European citizens.

HOW MAY THIS AFFECT YOU? Let’s take a very common case of an English citizen permanently living in Spain with no Will or with a Will drafted in order to leave everything to his wife, substituted by the children. When the new regulations are approved (i.e. assuming that the new law is approved by the EU Council), this could mean that unless the Will specifically states that this inheritance should be dealt with according to the deceased’s national Law or law of the country of origin (in this case the Law of England and Wales), the

applicable Law would be the law of habitual residence i.e. in this case ‘Spanish Law’. With the result that in this case his wife may not actually be able to inherit, since according to the Law of Spain at least 2/3 of the deceased’s assets must go to his legitimate forced heirs i.e. the children, and not to his wife.

Therefore, should this be your case then please review your Will to make sure you specifically stated your wish to have your inheritance dealt with according to your national Law and thus have the freedom to leave your assets as you wish. If this is not stated in your Spanish Will the new rules will mean that it could be contested.

So if you would like your wife, husband, partner etc to be the beneficiary of your Spanish inheritance then please let us draft or revise your Will, and we will be more than pleased to advice you accordingly.

Ten reasons to invest in Brazil

FOR MANY, Brazil is traditionally known for football and the Rio Carnival. However, investors have begun to realise there is a compelling longterm investment story too. Here we outline 10 by reasons why investors may wish to consider Brazilian equities.

The Centre of Economic and Business Research’s latest economic league table showed Brazil has overtaken the UK as the world’s sixth largest economy. The economy of Latin America’s largest country has surged due to a rich base of natural resources and a wealthy middle class.

2. Brazil’s own economy is bottoming out and improving Brazil’s economy is likely to bottom out by the end of the first quarter of 2012 and then enter a recovery phase. Our expectation for GDP growth in 2012 is 3.5%. The main drivers of growth in 2012 are likely to be investments (6.70%) and household consumption (4.30%).

3. Falling poverty and rising middle class Associated in the 1980s with poor Shanti towns, Brazil tells a very different story nowadays. The most important legacies of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, were the reduction in poverty and inequalities through formal job creation, increasing access to credit.

Nowadays, a strong consumption (household consumption above 60% , Government consumption close to 20%) has been supporting Brazil´s growth profile over the past two decades. Formal job creation increased from 1,2 million jobs in 2009 to 2 million jobs in 2010.

Combined with significant growth in the populations’ real disposable income since 2004, this suggests a continued shift towards a wealthier population.

4. Rich in commodities Brazil is vast and is blessed with substantial reserves of natural resources – precious metals, oil, minerals and agricultural products. It is amongst the largest producers and exporter of iron ore, nickel, aluminium, coffee, meat, poultry, soy and sugar.

5. Real interest rates are falling The real interest rate is around 4.5%. This is very low when compared to the 12% average seen over the past 15 years. We expect inflation to move from 6.5% in 2011 to 5.1% at the end of 2012 6. Undervalued and under owned Brazil’s valuations are among the most depressed when compared to other emerging markets, developed markets and even its own history. Currently, Brazil is trading at valuation multiples that are close to 2008 crisis levels.

7. Many headwinds are subsiding Brazilian equities have underperformed other developed and emerging markets over the past two years. On the upside, many of the reasons for their underperformance are no longer an issue. In 2010, headwinds included the rising interest rate cycle and Presidential elections. In 2011, it was exaggerated fears over Brazilian inflation, a credit/housing bubble and increasing intervention from the government in the management of Brazil’s Central Bank monetary policy. Going into 2012, inflation is moving downwards, the Central Bank has regained credibility and credit markets have started to accommodate lower

delinquency levels, compared to the 2008/2009 cycle.

However, structural issues remain. Taxes are high and multi layered, whilst there is a high level of bureaucracy.

8. Potential for re-rating – particularly in domestic sectors A pick-up in GDP growth from 3% to 3.5% should help to close the gap of current valuations versus historical levels. We are more positive on domestic stocks, which are in our opinion positioned for local growth, over commodities. We believe the domestic economy is likely to benefit from the increase in minimum wage, historical low unemployment rates and the acceleration of investments related to infrastructure needs.

9. Plenty of policy flexibility: The robust economic picture means there is potential to accelerate the monetary easing cycle. Meanwhile, international reserves are strong at USD350 billion and reserve requirements could be cut if favourable growth does not evolve.

10. Strong infrastructure development and investment Investment in infrastructure is likely. A large amount of money is likely to continue moving towards the Growth Acceleration Plan (PAC-2) ,sporting events and the PreSalt (deep water) oil reserves., it is expected that direct and indirect investments may reach BRL 176.8 billion until 2019.

It was on the wall in the kitchen and included all the important dates - children’s return to school, birthdays, dentists and so on. Everyone knew where to look and could enter any new date.

No double bookings - a simple system that worked well. You might have to find a pencil and it wasn’t very portable but apart from that it was definitely fit for purpose.

Now, it’s a different matter. I have so many portable, pencil free calendars it’s untrue. I have one on my phone, one on my laptop and one on my tablet. The result? Confusion. I never know where to look for what and never have the right one with me. Even worse it needs charging just when I have something urgent to check.

Entering an item in these programmes requires a degree of digital dexterity that I am struggling to acquire. By the time the date and event is in I could have sharpened my pencil twice over. And it’s colossal. For tax advisers it might be riveting reading but for everyone else, I wouldn’t recommend it. Instead, here are the main deadlines you should be aware of:

Rental Income Tax (for the first quarter of January, February and March)

4th May

Deadline for road tax for those living in the Alicante region where SUMA collects taxes

30th June

Resident tax declaration deadline

Around the August period

Council tax (IBI) this varies according to the region.

31st December

Non-resident tax declaration deadline

It’s important to note that for the non-resident tax declaration deadline, many firms of tax advisers and solicitors deduct the money to pay the Tax Authority in very good time; sometimes as early as February or March. At Ábaco we leave it slightly longer and begin organising payment of non-resident taxes around July time. One reason for this early collection is that not everyone’s calendar alerts them efficiently and we have to allow for a few empty bank accounts and subsequent reminders when the tax payment is due.

So, if you are expecting one of these deadlines, make sure it’s in your calendar (whichever one you use) the money is in your bank account and just be thankful that you don’t have to follow the Tax Authority’s 16 page calendar instead.

Liberty Seguros Group, once again, offsets 100% of their CO2 emissions The Liberty Seguros Group has received, for the fifth consecutive year, the CeroCO2 seal attesting to its commitment to the environment for its work in offsetting 100% of the CO2 emissions produced.

• An internal audit found that the insurer has offset 6,224.69 tonnes of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere during 2010 • The Ecology and Development Foundation (ECODES) has presented the group with the CeroCO2 Seal certifying the offset and the company’s commitment to reducing its emissions in 2012 • Natural disasters generated a total loss of €81 billion for the insurance sector Following the internal audit conducted

by ECODES, Cecilia Foronda, head of climate change and energy at ECODES, presented the insurer with a diploma certifying receipt of the seal. The Liberty Seguros Group has offset a total of 6,224.69 tonnes of greenhouse gases generated during 2010 through its consumption of energy, paper and transport.

Enrique Huerta, CEO of Liberty Seguros Group received the CeroCO2 Seal accrediting that the four buildings in which the group is present (two in Madrid, one in Barcelona and one in Bilbao) are CO2 neutral, i.e. all emissions generated are offset.

As part of the offset scheme, Liberty Seguros will be supporting an initiative to prevent deforestation in the Amazon.

The initiative protects 100,000 hectares of rainforest from deforestation in the

Madre de Dios region in Peru.

“In 2011, natural disasters generated a total loss of €81 billion for the insurance sector, which indicates that caring for the environment is an investment for our business that we cannot ignore.

Although the topic of CO2 emissions is usually related to energy companies, at Liberty Seguros we understand that the environment is everyone’s responsibility,” said Mr. Huerta.

Geraniums galore: But! by

APRIL AND May are the real start of the Geranium season although many plants will have continued to flower during the winter months. Now is the time to stock up your gardens and apartment terraces and plan to visit this year’s Cordoba Patio Festival during May, when patios with up to almost a thousand geraniums in wall pots will be on display. When we first visited such colourful patios our first reactions were ‘Where have the geranium moths gone?’ and ‘Who does all the watering and dead heading?’ The answers were not hard to find and made the mind boggle. Such displays were not for the amateur gardener.

By the time we had visited most of the sixty plus patios open to the public – a long hot day on foot - we realised that perhaps only a quarter were dedicated to geraniums and that these were generally only prepared and fully maintained for the period of the fiesta. Others were genuine residential patios full of a wide variety of evergreen plants, succulents, pots of bulbous plants with just a few seasonal petunias and geraniums: the sort of patio garden that would be cool and colourful throughout the year.

Half way through the day we wandered from one geranium temple into a more natural patio tended by a group of elderly neighbours. Their geraniums were not as virulent as the last patio. We asked why. ‘We try and keep our geraniums from year to year and take cuttings from those that survive the summer oven of Cordoba. It reached 50 degrees in the shade last year. We don’t get any subsidy from the Town Hall and can’t afford to buy hundreds of new plants every year.’

We then walked through an arch into an adjacent patio where 800 fresh plants festooned the walls. Not a dead head or poor plant to be seen. We chatted to the owners. ‘No we don’t keep this up all summer. We water and dead head in preparation for and during the festival but then cut back on the watering and hours of daily care. We can only water with a small half litre tilting can on the end of a 4 or 5 metre pole. It takes us 4 hours a day to just water each plant every other day. Just a few weeks after the festival most will have succumbed to the sun and geranium moth. It would be difficult to spray chemicals within these four high walls. Yes, we buy 800 new plants every March! It’s worth all the effort if we win a prize this year’.

In practice only fifteen of the sixty patios we visited were in the competition. The others were kindly opening their cherished homes to the public for ten days to demonstrate that living in an old town house can be delightful.

So when you visit your local garden centre recognise that many of the geraniums for sale will be from the controlled environment insect-free hot houses of Holland, Italy, Germany etc as well as Spain. Without care not all will make through the summer in the real world, particularly the upright zonal varieties which are the most susceptible to attack by the dreaded geranium moth. Interestingly 95% of geraniums in Cordoba were of the ivy-leaved trailing varieties or crinkly leafed pelargoniums that are more resistant.

So whether you have space for one or ten or more geraniums in pots, window boxes or flower beds only purchase strong healthy plants. Recognise that there are several types of geraniums for sale namely: Trailing geranium –pelargonium peltatum Crispy leafed geranium – pelargonium regal or gradiflora Upright geraniums – pelargonium zonal Geraniums gravolens – These are the rose and lemon scented varieties that are not normally attacked by the geranium moth. Geranium oil is distilled from these plants and the oil can be diluted to

spray other varieties of geraniums to deter the moth.

Assume the worst and spray new plants against the geranium moth the day you get them home from the garden centre. Ensure you then re-spray weekly. Recognise that although you may kill off the existing population of moths in your garden there are many more about to hop over the wall from unsprayed gardens, especially if adjacent properties are rarely occupied.

Watch out for the small holes surrounded by a black circle that indicates that a geranium moth has been around in spite of your spraying. Prune out affected stems.

Water to just keep damp: probably every other day if in full sun during hot weather.

Feed container planted geraniums with a dilute geranium fertilizer once a fortnight.

Dead head, and remove dead leaves weekly. Also remove any rubbish that builds up on the top of the soil in pots.

Take cuttings now or in the autumn to produce your own new plants for an even better and less expensive display.

Meals On Wheels Spain MEALS ON Wheels is a well-known concept in the UK but very new here in Spain.

The service was launched last year using an area of the Costa Blanca as a test area.

The plan was to roll out the service at the end of 2012.

However, the Meals On Wheels team received a larger number of calls than expected from outside the initial area and decided to bring their plans forward.

The focus is on delivering home cooked food of the highest quality possible for a person to enjoy in their own home.

The meals are delivered frozen so the customer can make up their own weekly meal plan.

and also making sure the meals provide good nutritional value. The meals are low salt and come with easy to follow cooking instructions.

There are also meals for two available so if you are catering for more than one Meals On Wheels can also cook for two.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

They come under various categories such as “false friends” “favourite sayings” “Spanish society” and so on. I hope you enjoy them.

IMPOSSIBLE WORD? Well, I consider my Spanish to be pretty good these days, and I think I can tackle saying most words without too much trauma. However, I have to admit to struggling with a word that is written on the side of a van (quite a long van I have to say) which often parks near my house. This is it: IMPERMEABILIZACIÓN. It means “water-proofing”, and yes, there are times when English is definitely easier than Spanish. If you’re stuck for something to do for the next few hours, try learning to say it – firstly reading slowly, then speeding up, then memorizing and finally, rattling it off like a native.

Who knows when you might actually need to say it!

TIQUISMIQUIS You’ve met them, you may live with one, you may even be one yourself!

That is “un tiquismiquis” – a “fuss pot”. My only really claim to fussiness is with food. I am, and always have been, the most “tiquismiquis” eater you could care to meet. I’ve spent far more time in my life moving things round on my plate than actually putting them in my mouth. My mother could have called me “tiquismiquis” but I think she had other expressions.

Some people are “tiquismiquis” about having everything in order, put back in the right place, clean and sparkling. That’s not my particular vice, but it might be yours. Are you “tiquismiquis”?

JUST AN ORDINARY GAL It’s a while since we’ve looked at a “False Friend”, those niggly little things that trip us up when we’re least expecting it. Today’s offering is the word “ordinario”. I know, you would think it meant “ordinary” wouldn’t you, and in fact it does in some prosaic contexts like the post office.

However, don’t ever use it to describe yourself, or anyone else unless you wish to insult them, because “ordinario” means “vulgar”,

“common” or as we like to say “common as muck!” Just be careful, that’s all I’m saying.

EASY PEASY Do you know how to say “It’s a cinch” in Spanish? That is “dead easy”, “a walk in the park”, “like falling off a log” (I say that one quite often but I do think it must be quite painful), “a walkover” “a nobrainer”. Well, now I’m going to tell you … ¡¡¡¡CHUPAO!!!!

It comes from the verb “chupar” which is “to suck” so it relates presumably to something even a baby can suck. Just to be very boring for a minute, the form is actually a past participle “chupado” pronounced in a way that drops the “d” (just think “gonna” in English).

Give it a try some time when something is really easy, or you’re just being ironic about your language skills.

COMIC-SPEAK IN SPANISH Just recently I came across a misunderstanding created by the use of “jajajajaja” as a response to a message on Facebook. Try saying it, with the correct pronunciation of course which is a strong throat “h” sound.

Smile as you’re doing it … doesn’t it sound just a little bit as though you are laughing? Possibly not, but anyway, that is exactly what it is meant to be – the equivalent of “hahaha”, or should that be “ha ha ha”?

It turns out that all those Dennis the Menace type words, like “splat” and “urgg” are different in Spanish! A favourite one of mine is ZAS!!!

It’s the sound of slap on the face. Sometimes when people think they’ve won an argument which silences an opponent with some brilliant statement or revelation, they say “zas en toda la boca”!! Not very nice really. I know, now you want me to tell you some more, but that’s your job. Go to a bookshop, buy a “comic” and expand your vocabulary with really important words!

BUYING IN bulk you would think would be a sensible way of saving money, stocking up with your favourites, cutting down the time spent shopping and saving fuel costs all at the same time.

Two for one and three for two it’s a keen shopper’s paradise as long as you are either good at mathematics or have a handy calculator with you.

In America any ‘two for one’ offers also mean that you can still buy just one of a ‘two for one’ offer, at half price - something the UK supermarkets have failed to pick up. It makes more sense to check the individual price of an item before buying more than you need at a more expensive price. Of course nothing is a bargain if it sits on a shelf unused or even in the fridge till it rots. Having tins of artichoke hearts which you managed to get cheap is fine, but only if you like them.

For restaurants buying in bulk can be a better way to get the best from a supplier. We used to buy all our vegetables and seafood by the case which meant less work for the suppliers and distributors. No additional handling, no weighing out, and produce bought by the case was fresher as open boxes

in use already obviously contain the oldest products. Buying a case of sea bass for instance meant we could buy much cheaper directly from the boat; watercress came directly from the farm as did apples and potatoes and asparagus, saving the trip to a wholesaler who would have to open the boxes and then weigh your order and then repack it before finding a delivery route which would probably be the next day.

It takes a bit of getting used to but for some of us, it’s the job, we can’t just rely on ‘special offers’ or ‘two for ones’ to find the right price, we ought to know the market price already. It appears that these special offers are for your benefit and to help you, but do me a favour and ask anyone in a supermarket which of the ‘fresh’ tomatoes priced by the pound, priced by the kilo and priced by the packet, which one represents the best value for money. In my experience even the produce manager as well as customer service won’t be able to tell you.

menu, telling me it’s “cos it was cheap” does not bode well for the owner.

Nothing is cheap if it sits on the shelf.

Having the right stock levels is an art.

Knowing not only how many customers are likely to come in this week and approximately what they will order is part of the professional’s duty but having too little in stock is often as bad as having too much. One mention of the words “it’s off” will probably mean the customer will be off soon too.

One dull and dreary winter’s lunchtime two customers were surprised somewhat to see that we were offering three different Iranian caviar choices on our menu. They were 25g Sevruga for £25.00p, 25g Oscietra for £48.00p and 25g of Beluga for £108.00p. This included the accompaniments and of course instruction if needed. I was surprised when they ordered the Beluga.

Following a main course of both fresh lobster and steak I asked if there would be anything else we could offer in the way of dessert, to which they replied “Yes we’ll have another Beluga Caviar for dessert as we don’t believe you have more than one in stock”…Oh but I did.

Cash for fire fighters

By Jack Troughton VISITORS TO a spring market organised by a neighbourhood association in aid of the Voluntary Firemen of Balcon al Mar, Javea, helped raise 2,700€.

Organised by the international group ISVH – the Inter Sociedad Vecinos Hisapnofilos – on Palm Sunday the money will help the ‘Bomberos Voluntarios’ continue its work preventing and putting out fires, and maintaining a fire-watch through the dry weather.

And ISVH, whose premises adjoin the fire station, said the amount raised this year had “exceeded all expectations” and will be spent purchasing protective clothing for firemen to use on call-outs.

AKIRA celebrates first anniversary

By Jack Troughton CHARITY AKIRA celebrated its first birthday in style with 50 guests enjoying a sun-kissed birthday party where fund-raising added another 515€ to help animals.

In its first year AKIRA has raised more than 11,000€ and is always on the lookout for new volunteers to share the workload.

In its first 12 months, the charity has been busy fostering rescued animals and finding new homes for dogs and in constant negotiation with both Benissa and Teulada Moraira Town Halls in a bid to secure land to build an animal shelter.

At the party, the charity’s Vice President Pauline Curtis thanked everyone for supporting the celebration at Bogart’s Restaurant, La Fustera, Benissa, and praised singer Barry Peters for the music and Ann of

A 60 year old needs 10 times more light to drive than a person who is aged 20 According to the Traffic Department, up to 5% of accidents whose causes are medical, could be caused by disorders of vision.

Sight starts to deteriorate after 40 years when conditions such as nearsightedness become severe and begin to appear alongside other problems such as eyestrain and cataracts. Experts recommend that drivers over 60 undergo regular eye tests, which can help detect and minimize vision problems associated with aging such as cataracts, presbyopia or glaucoma.

“Older drivers suffer a general deterioration of the visual system that is manifested in various ways. For example, having lower performance of eye movements and poorer spatial perception, also adaptation to the dark, glare recovery, colour vision, attention and visual search are more limited, “ says Dr. Fernando Llovet, Medical Director of Clínica Baviera.

“The best example is that a driver aged 55 needs eight times longer to recover from glare than a person aged 16 “.

Vision defects associated with age

Hypnotherapy and Pure HypnoAnalysis FIRST IMPRESSIONS of hypnotherapy are usually found by watching television and stage hypnosis: this can lead people to believe that they may be controlled or manipulated or made to do something ‘silly’....though nothing could be further from the truth.

A change for the much, much better!

LUC VAN der Heyden, who is 82, lives in Calpe. Previously one of the most active people you could hope to meet in life, he was formerly a painter, then an architect, then a technical draftsman involved with ship propeller design before becoming involved in the wine industry in California. He has lived all over the world but finally settled in Spain with his wife because of the warm climate.

Sadly Luc’s wife passed away two years ago and he turned to a home care agency for support. But evidently not all home care agencies are the same.

The relationship with the home care

company started well, and on a professional footing, and Luc was quickly introduced to and cared for by Rita Bratuszewski who was new with that agency. Sadly the two of them meeting was virtually the only good thing to come out of that agency.

Very quickly both Rita and Luc discovered that the backup provided was completely inadequate. Rita was pretty much left on her own, and when she had any doubts about the care for Luc there seemed to be noone for her to turn to. Neither Rita nor Luc considered that he was getting value or a proper service for what he was paying.

“Proper support was seriously lacking” says Rita. “It was worrying me where care for Luc was concerned. Every nurse and carer has to be confident that in an emergency or case of need, proper and rapid assistance will come from their organisation. But it got to such a point where Luc and I were feeling that there had to be something better than that agency for both him as the patient and me as the carer. Since the seventies, the charity shop has raised cash for numerous projects under its official name of ‘Union Benefica Carousel de Javea’ and every year an AGM decides where the money will go. Having read and heard about the new project at Denia Hospital, the Roundabout team voted that some of the money they raised in 2011 should go to Cancer Care and its English Cathedra of Modern Oncology Research, which uses the latest high tech machinery to enable individual treatment for every patient. I´ll make this short as it concerns that talentless idiot Russell Brand. I´ve been pretty hard on him for some time now and had more or less lost interest in any more Brand bashing… more or less.

The story I picked up on started off quite tamely with news of him having lunch with an unknown blonde in a trendy eatery in Los Angeles, generating mucho speculation in the press over there that his liaison with Hungarian beauty Nikolett Barabas was done and dusted.

Their relationship got all the way to Brand introducing the young model to his mother and her gushing about the him to Life & Style magazine saying, “He’s amazing, so funny, I like being with him, he’s a good person.” And it’s that last bit where it all goes wrong for me … he´s far from being a good person and rather than just quote the Radio 1 incident, here is what he said to People magazine recently about his split with Katy Perry: “I’m doing well ... You don’t need to brush it off if you don’t get it on you in the first place.”

Russell Brand is a nasty piece of work and I´m sorry Nikolett, but he´s about as funny as chips ‘n custard.

Cybil tells all but doesn´t Quite a few of you will remember ´Moonlighting´, a US TV show that ran for four years in the second half of the 80s starring Cybil Shepherd and Bruce Willis. A lot was made at the time of the couple´s off-screen squabbles, but according to an interview Cybil gave to US news show ‘Access Hollywood’ last weekend, there was a lot more to the story.

The blonde beauty surprised one and all on the top US show when out of nowhere she said, “ the show had been running for a couple of years and we’d been getting along well for a while and one night he showed up at my house like he wanted to … well you know … have sex … then I said, we shouldn’t, then he

said, we shouldn’t, and so we didn’t” ... aw for goodness sake! … What a letdown … however the presenter on the show probed a little more and Cybil added, “It was at my house” ...yeah we know that bit! … “just the two of us” … and that bit! … “there was a big bottle of whisky, or something.” … aha! OK! … and then? Sadly folks, that truly is all of it, although Ms Shepherd did add that she considered a romance with her co-star again towards the end of the show’s run when she said, “I was ready to near the end, but he had Demi Moore.”

Shameful - and at the same time honourable.

Cybil then very neatly changed tack in the interview right at the end when she said that her links to Willis might not be over “I hear he’s gonna put me in his new Die Hard movie, wouldn’t that be great?” … Cybil! … (What’s Basil Fawlty doing in here?)

Debbie ´n the artist ´n the rain

The movie ´The Artist´ has come in for heaps of praise in the wake of so much success at The Oscars in February winning 5 awards including Best Picture and Best Actor. However The New Post carried a story last week of an interview they had with Debbie Reynolds that is far from complementary. ‘The Artist’ storyline follows the career of a silent movie star who fell on hard times with the introduction of sound, and Debbie has reminded us that this was the same plot idea as ‘Singing In the Rain’, a film she starred in with Donald O’Connor and Gene Kelly. “I thought ‘The Artist’ was a very good film,” said Debbie “with talented personalities, but they took the basic premise of our movie, and it’s not in colour, and the musical numbers aren’t as good.”

Bless you Debbie, it must be difficult to accept something so radical when you were part of such a glorious movie like ‘Singing in the Rain’. Another absurdity about this amazing film is that it didn´t win one Oscar when it went on release in 1952, and has since been named fifth in the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest movies of all time. Yeah, I’m thinking about the Morecombe and Wise version as well…

Cruising with Freeway EXCITING NEW Costa Blanca band Freeway hits the road this month with its unique sound sharpened with several months of rehearsal.

The band consists of Freddie on vocals and bass; Tony on vocals, lead guitar and percussion; and Carmen on saxophone.

The trio are all experienced musicians and understand the work needed to build a reputation as a new band and the difficulties face by local venues in the current economic crisis – and so Freeway is offering its first booking for free, confident that once heard the band will

The Hoax happened when Danny linked up with three new mates from Drama School. Bass player, George Parker, and guitarist, Ben Davis, had been looking to start a band up when they met Danny, and drummer Seb Baldwin made up the package. The band has gigged mainly in the Jalon Valley so it’s now time for its Moraira debut. The Hoax covers bands like Snow Patrol and JET in their set, with a little Hendrix in the mix. They have an enthusiasm that boils over in their live sets and sucks you in, described as “an awesome new teen rock band!” So come and judge for yourselves!

THERE IS going to be a new Country Music Jam Night at La Placeta Bar in Calpe at 8pm on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month. Broadway glamour

By Jack Troughton SHOW GROUP Sounds Familiar are putting the final sparkle into its new show ‘Broadway Baby’ ahead of its debut on Friday 27th April at the Casa de Cultura, Calpe.

The group is again supporting Friends of the Children of EMAUS and a donation of 25% of each ticket sold will go directly to the charity.

Membership of Sounds Familiar has soared since its first performance in 2009, and Broadway Baby has a cast double the size of the group’s first outing 30 months ago.

Musical director Philip Ashley said it will be the first time Sounds Familiar will perform the entire show without assistance from other groups – in fact, not all members will be cast in Broadway Baby itself and they have formed a small choir to assist in the singing.

He hopes the audience will appreciate and enjoy the new format and the big production numbers from a selection of Broadway hit productions including Kiss Me Kate, Oklahoma, Godspell, Little Shop of Horrors, La Cage Aux Folles, My Fair Lady and 42nd Street.

Tickets are priced at 12€, 8€ for under 14s, and the doors open at 7.30pm with the show starting at 8pm.

Life tech Website updated but can’t get on to site

David via email asks: BARCLAYS ONLINE have updated their website and I find out that my Windows XP will not get into the site and they tell me that I should update my Internet Explorer. It currently shows sp2 which they tell me I can update. Please treat me as a novice and give me the details how to do it.

Aunty Says: Hi David. I think there are two different (but related) things you need to address here. The SP2 (Service Pack 2) is not referring to IE (Internet Explorer), but to Windows XP itself, and to access the Barclay’s website properly your version of IE will need to be at least IE7. You can auto initiate these updates from ‘start’ ‘all programs’ ‘windows update’ or manually by going to the ‘support’ tab on www.microsoft.com. If you run into any problems and want a quick fix then maybe try using Firefox or Chrome from www.download.com which should work without the need for any Windows updates. You should at a later date plan on installing XP SP3 and IE8, but I don’t think that will be necessary for this purpose.

Allen via email asks: DEAR AUNTY. I read with interest your article this week regarding problems with printers using Windows7. I am also having a similar problem in as much that I took your advice which stated ‘Go to the Epson website and look under support section for my model’ but I am unable to find my particular model, which is Epson Stylus SX115.

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Aunty Says: Hello Allen. I think I have found one for your printers on the www.epson.co.uk website so I have emailed you a link. Depending on your version of Windows7 you may need to choose between the 32bit or 64bit version. You can check which version of Windows you have by clicking on the Start icon and then right clicking on ‘Computer’ and choose ‘Properties’.

Burning CD or DVD’s Warning to others Irene via email asks: I HAVE Windows7 Home and recently when burning to a CD or DVD my computer shuts down.

Have you come across this fault before? Can you make any recommendations?

Aunty Says: Hello Irene. This is a bit tough to diagnose without seeing all of the details so I can only suggest the most common cause that I have come across. Firstly I would recommend checking that your DVD burning software is compatible with Win7. You can do this by running the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor from the bottom of www. enetcomputers.net. Windows7 has a pretty good built in CD & DVD burning function which is activated when you insert a blank disc into the drive. From there you simply drag and drop the files you want onto the CD drive window.

Alex from Olivia asks: HI AUNTY. I had a phone call supposedly from Microsoft Tech saying they had detected many error reports on my computer and that my Firewall had expired. Basically they wanted between 110€ & 330€ to renew it. I hung up but within seconds all my icons disappeared. I restored to the week earlier and everything is okay but this morning Google had vanished.

This afternoon I had another call from the same people and phone number, and for reference the number was 212 210 2100. Would Microsoft ever phone a private number?

Aunty Says: Hello Alex. Microsoft won’t proactively call you regarding problems on your computer, and this is a known scam that’s been rapidly gaining momentum recently. You did the right thing by hanging up, but you should do a complete security scan of your computer with your antivirus and antispyware programs, just to make sure there are no nasties on there.

Ask At a recent Show, here in Spain, the audience were full of questions. I like that. I would rather overrun than have that dreadful ending to a performance when no questions whatsoever are asked. I always say that the asking of a question shows what the audience wants to remember. I have to accept that questions are often asked by an off stage whispering in my ear. Spirit is a very private energy, and though it thrives on the energy of a supportive audience there are things that I just cannot and will not say in public. A quiet whisper cannot be shared and this is the highly personal way that things have to be sometimes.

At this particular Show questions came up about 2012, and what can we expect to happen? With people talking about death and destruction and December 21st being the end of the World; others were resolutely asking about Ascension facilities to the Fifth Dimension.

Well, we can become more aware. We can forget that not so long ago we were dubbed conspiracy loonies and that this was because so many didn’t want to think that anything bad could happen to them. The end of the financial pressures brought about by an artificially enforced World economic crisis is having a positive effect too.

Kirsty F. How dare the Church damn your Great Grandpa because he took his life! I get angry when Man makes laws like this. I thought forgiveness was so important, how forgiving is it to force someone to be buried out of the garden of God, which each churchyard should be? Often I have been told that if you take your life then you can’t enter into the Spirit World, well, it’s not true; I have had dialogue with countless people who have taken their lives, made their transition and are very happy. I guess Gramps is happy to be a part of nature and to sleep in the soil with unconsecrated ground around him. Leave him be is my suggestion, but if you can find the place of his grave, and these were usually so he could see the church in question close by, then why not give him a cross, or a headstone?

TO THOSE who have read this column in recent years, (it started in 2004) I am not only a “wrinkly” (74 years young in February) who has taken an interest in the motoring laws in Spain because not much was available in English when I needed advice, but I also used to be an engineer specialising in aircraft engines.

If you have an automatic transmission you have to put your foot on the brake with the lever in “Park” otherwise you cannot start the engine and keep the brake engaged to move the transmission lever into Drive. This system is designed for the USA market where they need these safety devices to reduce the litigation culture.

Spring is here at last. Be careful out there. The government, is desperately short of money.

Freewheelers at Antic Auto

SATURDAY SAW a good number of Freewheelers attend the 9th annual International Classic Car Show at the IFA in Alicante. Some met in La Marina and drove to the show together where they met up with those who had gone direct.

Although there seemed to be fewer exhibitors this year than in the past there was still a good array of vehicles on display ranging from a very modern Rolls Royce to the humble 2CV. Some of the vehicles for sale seemed a tad expensive even with a claimed discount for the duration of the show. A good selection of tools and associated equipment was of more interest to some and the odd moth could be seen escaping captivity. After a couple of hours the Freewheelers travelled back down to La Marina Urbanisation and enjoyed a excellent if some what leisurely three course lunch. The next Freewheelers event is the Concentration of Classic Cars and Bikes in conjunction with Marjal Luxury Camping at their site in Catral on the 13th May. This promises to be a very large event with many clubs having been invited.

The vast majority of golfers here in South Eastern Spain have to use mats made of a combination of rubber and nylon when they go to practice instead of playing from grass. Mats are good if there is nothing else available but they can cause injuries of various types. In particular impact injuries are common because of mats that are too old and really should be replaced.

At a time when money is tight many golf clubs see the driving range at the very bottom of their list of priorities when it comes to maintenance and are just happy to collect the money as an added bonus to the green fees they sell.

Unfortunately we are seeing more and more golf clubs use mats for longer and very many are now so thin that the concrete that many sit on comes into play when we hit a golf ball. This as many will understand can cause serious injury that will last a considerable time to recover from.

Golfers need to be aware that unless the mats are on a soft surface such as another old mat or grass they are likely to be injuring themselves by continually playing from hard surfaces. Grass is obviously the best surface to play from as there is considerably more give in the ground. Just this week I have had two golfers speak to me about injuries they feel the suffered by hitting balls from worn out mats that have become really hard.

Grass ranges are few and far between but they are well worth the extra travelling in many cases if you are serious about practicing your game. The golf club

is likely to be travelling in excess of 100 KPH when it makes contact with the ground so impact will be felt if the surface is hard. Rubber mats also give a false impression of how well you are striking the golf ball as the club will skid along the nylon surface giving extra clubhead speed and therefor extra distance than you would usually get.

So be aware of the risks of playing from any artificial surface when practicing or indeed when you go for a lesson. Grass is the true surface and will always give you a truer feel of what is happening when your strike the ball.

THE PROFESSIONAL SCENE

The European Tour is now half way through a three week visit to The Far East before returning to Spain.

Last weekend Malaysia hosted The May Bank Malaysian Open where a surprisingly big number of the games top players turned out after the exertions the week before in America. There was also a chance for many of the ambitious players from The Far East to compete against some of the best from Europe in what is a cosanctioned event with The Asian Tour.

Deep rough and narrow fairways together with very high humidity made sure that players were going to have to work hard to win the tournament. Some big names failed to get over the jetlag and got an unexpected weekend off. Others such as Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel

continued the fine form they showed the week before and put themselves in contention come the close of play early on Saturday due to heavy rain.

On Sunday Oosthuizen played superbly all the way around his final 18 holes to secure a well-deserved win by three shots over Stephen Gallacher and his second European Tour title of the 2012 season.

Meanwhile over the other side of the pond Luke Donald needed to finish inside the top eight at The Heritage Classic to retain his top spot in The World Rankings.

On a course where he lost in a playoff last year his hopes were high but a poor first round left him with too much to do and so the mantle of World Number One passes back to Rory McIllroy for a short time at least.

This week some of the top players on The European Tour turned up in China for The

Volvo China Open and compete against their Asian counterparts for one of the richest events in the Far East. This will be an interesting weekend on a golf course that is new to many players so scoring will be perhaps a little more difficult as a result.

The third week in the Far East will conclude with the Ballantines Championship where Lee Westwood will defend his title over what the sponsors promise will be a very tough test of golf. This event will have a World Class field and will provide lots of ranking points for the lucky winner.

Golfing tip of the week.

Putting practice will do more for a golfer than hitting an extra 20 balls on the range.

The Final Whistle

NETWORK RAIL decided 18 months ago that they would undertake major engineering works over the bank holiday weekend in May and they communicated that decision to all and sundry at the time. However, that hasn’t stopped the Football Association from scheduling the FA Cup final for a 5.15pm kick off on Saturday 5th.

The result is that a huge number of Liverpool fans who attend the game won’t be able to get home on the day and even those who will be forced to wait 24 hours for suitable transport face journeys of up to 5 hours as they travel back to the North West. The FA has, of course, defended their decision to move to a later kick off time saying it was taken after studying extensive fan research. However, the real reason for the switch comes later in their statement which reads: “The later time also maximises a bigger domestic and global TV audience for broadcasters.”

In other words, the FA doesn’t care a jot about the supporters who will go to

Wembley, making the day one of the best in the domestic football calendar but rather they’ll be concentrating on keeping the broadcasters happy which means more cash for them from TV revenues. If anything, the FA’s disdain for the travelling supporters is only devaluing their premier competition and it’ll surely only be a matter of time before fans decide, despite club loyalties, that they’d rather give their hard earned cash to somebody else.

DODDERY DROGBA Didier Drogba scored the all-important goal for Chelsea in mid week as they beat Barcelona 1 – 0 in their Champions League semi final, first leg at Stamford Bridge. He also led the line and covered every inch of the pitch, though sadly for us neutrals watching on TV this was mostly on his backside and in supposed agony.

Talisman though he is to the club, Drogba’s play-acting and time-wasting activities are thoroughly infuriating: the Ivorian is due to leave Chelsea at the end of the season on a free transfer. Rather than going to another

CHARITY MATCH The club holds an annual charity match for a different charity each year. This year’s charity is Asociacion Emaus, founded in 1979. This charity looks after children from the day they are born up to the age of six years, where they move on to a further Asociacion. The government, due to austerity measures, has cut all funding and the charity is now struggling with utility bills and basic items. Within the club on a weekly basis we are providing some basic items such as toilet rolls; soap powder; shampoo; soap; shower gel; tooth brushes and tooth paste; nappies and baby milk etc.

If you feel that you could help, even if it is only one item to give

club, perhaps he could offer his services to the groundsman at Lords, who I understand is on the lookout for a new roller.

MICHAEL LYNAGH The former Australian fly half Michael Lynagh is truly one of the kindest, honest and most generous men in sport. I have been lucky enough to meet him on a number of occasions, most memorably when he was a guest on Michael Parkinson’s Radio 5 chat show some years ago. Lynagh had forgotten that the night in question coincided with his wedding anniversary celebrations. Rather than cancelling his appearance, he turned up at the studios at Broadcasting House with his wife and after the show, took us all out to dinner.

ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS Supplied by Terry Screen Our first visit of the year to the Embalse Argos on 10th April was the fourth round in our spring series of matches.

There was some colour to the water and it was high, backing right up into the tree line. This is a venue that some four years or so ago would produce many catches of 100+lbs, but nowadays I’m afraid weights are much lower mainly because of the number of anglers that consistently take large amounts of fish allegedly for the table, which are probably caught illegally - i.e. with more than two rods, long lining and also by anglers with no licenses.

While we were there on this visit I was pleased to see the Guardia come down and check the licenses of anglers that were there, and presumably because they had no licenses told them to leave: they also came back later in the day to check if they had returned.

Supermoto comes to Alicante

BRITISH EXPAT Supermoto racer, Anthony Ford-Dunn, who lives in Bullas, near Murcia, is making final preparations for next week’s first round of the Spanish Supermoto Championship which take place at the Chicharra Kart Circuit in Villena next Sunday, 29th April.

Anthony, who is no stranger to the highly competitive racing, was runner up in the championship in 2010 and 4th overall in 2011 despite crashes and injuries forcing him to miss some races. Race organisers have been busy preparing the Chicharra circuit for the season opener and made several modifications to aid the riders. The racing is sure to be close and Anthony has been training hard over the winter months for this moment.

“We have already raced at two rounds of the Catalan championship this year,” he told RTN, “and I finished 2nd overall at both of those, just behind the current Spanish champion. I am sure that I will be right with him come the race at Villena, as it’s our home track and I really want that win.” The venue is open to spectators who will experience the thrills and spills of high speed Supermoto racing in Alicante. Anthony is riding for the Supermotoland team and he love to see as many people as possible go along

TORRY HAVE had mixed fortunes in the last couple of weeks. A week last Wednesday Torry lost to a last minute goal at CD Castellon despite playing against 10 men for the last 55 minutes after the opponents had a man sent off. Last Sunday they beat Ath Saguntino at home 2-0 with goals from Burguillos and Manu Amores with Torry themselves having a man sent off and having to play 50 minutes with 10 men. Torry remain in 7th place, still 4 points off the 4th and final play off spot and on Sunday travel to play 3rd placed side Alzira which won’t “on paper” be an easy game.
