Hanging on the telephone by Jack Troughton
Annette Bowen
CRUEL FRAUDSTERS left Costa Blanca businesswomen Annette Bowen reeling with a massive mobile ‘phone bill after holidaying in France. Annette was baffled at a sudden leap in the cost of calls during her vacation racking up hundreds of euros by calling a mysterious number and spending up to four hours a time chatting. It now appears she has fallen victim to thieves and has had the details of her ‘phone cloned – leaving her to pay for more than €530 for calls she never made. And as a desperate Annette refused to pay the Orange bill and with
debt collectors closing in, she asked if RTN could investigate. With the help of John Stewart of RTN Network, it was discovered a series of calls were made to a number in Singapore. He explained that mobile cloning was on the increase and using a hi-tech scanner – frequently at an airport as people switched on a ‘phone to begin ‘roaming’ – the electronic identity was stolen. The eavesdropping technology allows the details to be programmed into another ‘phone and the costs of calls run up on the illegal clone are charged back to the original innocent customer. continued on page 3
