Spain in the dock by Jack Troughton
VALENCIA’S NOTORIOUS ‘land grab’ laws have pushed Spain into an embarrassing court case and a direct confrontation with the European Union next week. The European Commission is prosecuting “defendant” the Kingdom of Spain over the controversial LRAU legislation and its replacement, the LUV. And as a result the matter is listed for hearing before a judge in the European Court of Justice at 09.30 on Thursday 16th September. It could result in Spain facing hefty fines. The matter has come to a head after a complaint by the Costa Blanca based group Abusos Urbanisticos No, the high profile campaign group fighting to protect the rights of property owners and the environment. And while the AUN – formed as a protest against the abuses of the LRAU and LUV - began legal proceedings more than five years ago, it had convinced the Commission

to take on the case as a clear breach of EU law and the human rights of citizens. del Sol, has placed the Andalucía municipalities in the focus of the Inspectorate. Spain is called on to answer the charges because the state rather than the Valencian Community is a member of the EU and committed to its laws. However, it will be argued that Madrid failed to keep “its children” in regional government in line over law making – Valencia’s laws heavily flawed in the eyes of protesters and MEPs dealing with thousands of complaints. Under the land grab laws, property owners are forced to give up land and pay for infrastructure – or both – for large scale urbanisation passed by local authorities and Valencia. Repeatedly condemned in the European Parliament, the laws were said be a breach of human rights and turning the Spanish dream into a “nightmare.” Continued on page 4

Artists with the Continental Wealth team
Hammer comes down for charity TALENTED ARTISTS have donated valued work to a special Costa Blanca art auction to benefit three good causes working in the community.A chance remark triggered an event being staged at the Marriott Hotel, La Sella, near Denia, and hosted by Continental Wealth Management. And the charities set to benefit from the 30th September sale are MABS Cancer Support Group, the Preventorio de Gandia – where children are cared for by a group of nuns and volunteers, and Javea-based animal charity APASA. Anne Rees, office manager at Continental Wealth in Javea, told RTN her husband Terry had taken up painting as a hobby and studied with Marc Meyer at the Belgium artist’s Estudio d’Arte in Javea Port. Charter night
continued from front page
IN A historic move, Benissa Town Hall adopted the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in a unanimous vote on Wednesday night. Believed to be the first local authority to embrace the charter, the council follows the European Union and Spain itself in effectively making it law within the municipality. A motion drafted by independent Councillor Lisa Svoboda was debated at the first council meeting after the summer break and achieved all party support. A delighted councillor said afterwards she hoped other councils across Spain would follow Benissa’s lead and help make the important safeguards contained in the charter better known to every resident. The commitment demonstrated by Benissa offers residents greater legal and judicial security in a number of key areas, including property rights.

By Jack Troughton NEW FIGURES reveal the Generalitat of Valencia is more than €21 billion in debt - representing just over €4,137 per capita. A survey of all Spain’s autonomies, diputacions and town halls has identified they are over €145 billion in the red. Valencia comes behind Catalunia and the Balearic Islands in the table drawn up to reach an overall total described as “staggering” and leaving questions as to how the country can be refinanced. The statistics show the village of Castell de Guadalest has sunk lowest into the red in the autonomy, representing a debt for each of its 300 residents of €2,900.

“TERRY HAS so many completed works sitting round the house I suggested giving them away or selling them, but he was adamant they were all his babies,” said Anne. “Then I said, as a joke, there were so many that they could be auctioned – and the seed was planted.” Next Anne approached managing directors at Continental Wealth to ask if they would be interested in sponsoring an auction where all the proceeds went to charity and received a green light. “I approached Marc and asked whether he and his students would each be willing to donate a painting of quality towards the auction,” said Anne. Arc agreed it would be a good idea and the studio came on board with all the students donating. “Just a few weeks ago, one of Marc’s students Patrice Oleg Lonnikoff was preparing for an exhibition in Javea Old Town when he died suddenly the night before his work was to be shown – his family have kindly said they would donate a piece of his work to the auction.” And as the idea snowballed, Gareth Knowles, the celebrated Irish sculptor, also decided to join in and has donated work. Anne said the Marriott kindly agreed to stage the sale and in addition promised a free glass of cava to guests on arrival – while Continental Wealth was providing cheese and wine at the interval. The art can be viewed from 17.00 on 30th September and the bidding begins promptly at 18.00. Because numbers are limited, entrance is ticket only and can be reserved by calling Anne on 966 462 875.

continued from front page The case centres on the processes used for the award of lucrative public work, supply and service contracts linked to massive development projects – and the Commission will also call for Madrid to pay costs. FAILURE
The Commission argues the Kingdom of Spain “failed to fulfil its obligations” under EU directives concerning the procedures for the award of public works contracts. It argues in awarding urban development contracts the Valencian land laws, whether the LRAU, LUV or both, failed to award Integrated Action Programmes – urban development contracts – in accordance with community law regarding the tender process. A case statement reads: “In other words, the Commission affirms that the IAP are public works contracts awarded by local bodies which include the carrying out of public infrastructure works by urban developers chosen by the lo-
cal authorities.” Further, it believes the LUV law “infringes” on directives in relation to the “privileged position” of the first bidder, the experience of bidders in similar contracts, alternative proposals to the first bidder ‘in open envelope’, the regulation of variations and the criteria for awarding contracts. And it attacks “the possibility of amending the contract after it has been awarded (for example, the possibility of increasing development fees) and the regulation of cases of incomplete execution of the contract by the bidder. PREDATOR
Charles Svoboda, Vice-president of the AUN, said he hoped the court case would trim the claws of the more predatory aspects of the land grab laws. “This marks an important – almost final – step in a long process that we hope and trust will seriously erode some of the more predatory aspects of the land laws in this region,” he said. He said the AUN had yet to see the Advocate General’s opinion – but it was felt the case would not have reached
the court if it was “without merit”. “We understand from our contacts in the Commission that, if his counsel is followed the Spanish government, and through it the Valencia region, will be compelled to modify the application of the land laws so they respect EU laws, notably with regard to public contracts,” said Charles. “Failing that, the court could impose heavy fines against Spain for noncompliance.” He said the case had already had positive affects with the Superior Tribunal in Valencia “looking over its shoulder” and insisting both EU and national law be respected. “That means developers and town halls are going to face some complex obstacles if they try to carry on with their cosy, mutually back-scratching property deals as before,” he added. “One result is small property owners should be much safer from the property sharks hovering over any area they think would attract new buyers.... we should be entering a more positive era for those who wish to feel secure in their home.”
Vicar throws punches in church A VICAR punched a member of his congregation in church last week when he committed a blasphemous act. Víctor Jimeno, the vicar in a church near Valencia, launched his fists at fiesta organiser Rubén Costa, when he took the bread – which represents the body of Christ – out of
his mouth, tore it up and stamped on it. A fight then broke out, which ended when the vicar kicked Costa in the rear end, according to witnesses. The entire congregation were thrown out of church, although the vicar later apologised. Jimeno then had to be treated for shock.
French air traffic strike affects flights
MANY FLIGHTS were unable to fly through French air space last Tuesday due to the French air traffic controllers’ strike. Air traffic employees were protesting over pay and working hours. WOULD YOU like to help have fun, with some hard work too? And at the same time help a very good cause to raise funds? The Alzheimers Association regularly organise fund raising events and would like to have a group of people who would enjoy helping to “set the scene,” as it were. Sometimes this would mean selling tickets at the door, or arranging tables and chairs, or even erecting the AFA gazebo! In other words helping the organisers with
any odd job needed. Such events usually take place on average twice each month and could involve a couple of hours per event. (More if you want it). The Alzheimers Association has a dedicated team of volunteers already, but they work so hard in our shop and at The Day Centre, they need some help. You would need to be reasonably fit and willing to work as a team. Please ring 966 789 020 (English) or 636 110 251(Spanish).

NEW BOYS at American Football, the players of La Nucia Spartans were blooded at Valencia’s first ‘Bowl de Verano’ and did themselves proud. The team took to the field for the first time at the tournament, staged at La Nucia’s impressive sports complex, and competed with veterans of ‘flag football’– similar to touch rugby – in the Valencia League. Coach and quarter back Ben McMahon said afterwards it was clear the Spartans had a lot of potential and with hard work could look to compete for the league title. “We came into the competition with the hope that we could keep up with these other great teams – some of my players didn’t even know what American football was two months ago but they have worked hard and
learnt the game in a short period of time,” he said. COMPETE
“I could not have asked for more – not only did we come into this tournament and keep up with the teams but we also competed with them and hopefully turned some heads in the process.” He said the competition was a great learning experience for the team and had attracted a number of potential recruits. “I look forward to coaching them the basics of a great game and seeing them grow as players.”Anyone interested in becoming involved with the Spartans or wanting more information can join the forum at lanuciaspartans.team-talk.net or search for the Facebook site.

Town hall decides against appeal by Louise Clarke THE ORIHUELA Town Hall, led by Mayor Monica Lorente, has taken the decision not to appeal against a court ruling which has annulled the contract for the Torremendo Waste Plant. At the time of the initial agreement, thousands of residents from not only Torremendo but other surrounding municipalities, protested in a large demonstration march through the city of Orihuela. According to reports, Ms Lorente has indicated a preference no to appeal against the decision saying that “… if a decision is made, it is made. I have no desire to appeal against that decision.” The Mayor referred to the decision that was issued last week by the Number Three Court of Administrative Litigation in Alicante, which declared the agreement, between the Town Hall and the Governing Board of the Waste Consortium of Vega Baja, which was made in January 2008, void. DESTRUCTION
The Consortium is a joint venture company which involves two of the businessmen implicated in the Brugal corruption case, Enrique Ortiz and Angel Fenoll. It was the consortium that was awarded the contract for the construction of the landfill and waste treatment plant, despite it being rated by technicians as the third best option. The project would have meant the destruction of a large area of land in the Sierra Escalona, located within the tiny hamlet of Torremendo. According to Ms Lorente, Orihuela was chosen to host the Vega Baja area’s waste plan as
The Torremendo protests through Orihuela
a result of a technical report approved by the governing board of a special technical commission, of which she says she was not a member. The Mayor explained that there were a number of conditions to the choice of landfill site which included that it had to be “…as far away as possible from any population centre and have the means for the construction of roads and infrastructure for heavy traffic, but still be within the municipality and that is why that area in Torremendo was chosen.” TECHNICAL REPORTS
She also said that the implementation of such a project required using a company that could provide “quite substantial financial compensation, which gave the possibility of investing in the hamlet and surrounding areas.” She added: “But these details were never given and now the Town Hall has decided that Orihuela will stay out of this
issue.” The Mayor still firmly believes that out of the 27 municipalities in the Vega Baja, Orihuela was the best place for the plant and is said to be ‘crushed’ by the decision. Meanwhile, the Socialist Group in Alicante has announced its intention to open an investigation to determine “...the existence of possible political interference into the drafting of the technical reports, which identified the location of the waste plant in the hamlet of Torremendo.” Antonio Amorós, said that: “It is essential to reach the last extremity of this situation, shed light and fairly and squarely place the responsibility onto someone.” Amorós said: “The waste plant project must start from scratch because what has been done so far has no validity. There are far too many questions that have plunged the entire process into disarray and resulted in a judicial labyrinth of uncertain outcome.”
Taxes fall after protest PROPERTY TAXES are to be cut following a pensioner’s outcry at soaring IBI bills along the Costa Blanca. Betty Gower led a protest by residents of the coastal area of Benissa at the year on year rises that were “pricing us out of existence.” The plight of expats and second home owners was highlighted in RTN last month and was taken up by opposition councillors in Benissa – making headlines in Spanish newspapers and radio stations. And Benissa Mayor Juan Bautista Rosello has now announced that IBI rates in certain areas – the coastal zone, Pla dels Carrals and Pla de Bonaire – will drop. He estimated that town hall income would fall by some €600,000 as a result of the reduction. Madrid sets the Catastral – the rateable value of property – but protesters maintain Benissa’s move underlined how town halls could, within limits, act to remedy tax hikes. Betty, who lives in Fustera, told RTN her IBI bill had soared to €755 this year, an increase of €82 and she had watched the burden double in five years. MONEY She believed key areas of the municipality had become a cash cow for the local authority – assuming expats had pots of money. Betty said recession was hitting everyone and the whole community could
Betty Gower ill afford such increases. “I don’t think town halls realise how much expats are struggling.” And yesterday (Thursday) she celebrated the news her bill would fall. “I think this is absolutely excellent news, it really is. “I am very grateful to RTN for its support in highlighting this appalling state of affairs – I am very pleased at the outcome, it is very good news.” In interviews, Benissa’s PSOE leader Vicente Cabrera referred to Betty’s complaint and the RTN story. Criticising unfair tax rises, the socialist councillor said town hall coffers relied on the tax income from coastal areas to function – yet local authority services enjoyed by the residents were a fraction of those supplied to the urban district.

Terror group announces ceasefire Bruce Willis in by Jack Troughton
BASQUE SEPARATIST group Eta has said it is quitting its armed struggle for independence in a bid to resume peace talks with the Spanish government. The ceasefire was announced in a video released to the BBC and a Basque newspaper and made by three masked members of Eta sitting at a table with the group’s axe and snake emblem behind them. Eta has killed over 800 people since 1968 and is listed as a terrorist organisation by Spain, the United States, and the European Union. Madrid was sceptical of the motives behind the move. The last ceasefire, described as “permanent” came in March 2006 and saw Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s government begin negotiations – the premier saying he was optimistic of reaching a settlement. However, the negotiations were scrapped after a bomb killed two Ecuadorians at Madrid’s Barajas Airport nine months later and a bombing campaign last summer took Spain to its highest state of alert. In the video, a masked woman said: “Eta announces that it took the decision several months ago not to carry out armed actions.” DEMOCRACY
And she said the group wanted “to reach a scenario for a democratic process” – but there was nothing to indicate whether the ceasefire would be temporary or permanent. Further, there was no mention of Eta surrendering its arms or submitting to an international verification process – seen as a vital part of beginning talks to a peace process. This week Sinn Fein, the Irish republican
party and typically seen as the political wing of the IRA, said it played an instrumental part in steering the Basque group towards last Sunday’s announcement. Leader Gerry Adams said his party was heavily involved in pushing Eta to calling a ceasefire following months of talks. He said: “This dialogue also involved senior Sinn Fein representatives, including myself. Sometimes the discussions were held in the Basque country, sometimes in Belfast and on a number of occasions in recent years Sinn Fein representatives travelled to Geneva for meetings with Basque representatives.” And he said he hoped Eta’s response in calling a ceasefire would be seized by Madrid as an opportunity to start a peace process that could embrace principles used in Northern Ireland. PEACE
“Sunday’s statement did not come out of the blue,” said Adams. “I believe it has the potential to bring about a permanent end to the conflict with the Spanish state.” Former leaders of Batasuna – the political party banned as being an Eta front – have been pressing for the group to lay down its arms and end its ongoing low-key terrorism. It believes an armed struggle was blocking progress towards independence and wants a full peace process including a permanent ceasefire with international verification. But the Spanish government believes the party is attempting to make political capital from Eta’s move ahead of next year’s elections. It believes without actually giving up its arms, the group is playing a waiting game, hoping to rebuild after a series of arrests in Spain and France had devastated Eta’s leader-
ship structure. Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said: “Eta kills in order to impose itself. That means one cannot have dialogue. The word ‘truce’, as the idea of a limited peace to open a process of dialogue, is dead. WEAK
“What they do not say is that they decided to stop months ago because they were so weak. Eta has stopped because it cannot do anything and also in order to rebuild itself.” It is believed the failure of the last ceasefire and the resumption of a bombing campaign was the result of growing tensions between Eta’s hawks and doves – an internal power struggle between factions, just as occurred within the IRA. The group has been severely weakened by hundreds of arrests including key members of the Eta hierarchy – in the first six months of 2010, 62 Eta suspects were held in Spain, France and other countries. Eta (Euskadi ta Askatasuna or Basque Country and Freedom) was formed in 1959 to fight for an independent state in northern Spain and south-western France during the dictatorship of General Franco. It has killed 829 people since 1968, the last was the murder of a French policeman near Paris in March in a shootout – the first French security officer to be killed by Eta and triggering President Nicolas Sarkozy to promise he would hunt down Eta supporters. Last July a Guardia Civil barracks in Burgos, in the north of Spain, was badly damaged in a car bomb explosion and two civil guard officers died last summer when a device was triggered outside barracks on the holiday island of Majorca.

British father and son drown
A BRITISH father and son drowned last week in rough seas off the Costa Tropical. The 45-year-old son entered into the water to help his 75-year-old father who was having difficulties. The two have been identified as son, Jonathan Wells, and father, Robert Wells, who were on holiday from Surrey in the UK. Two more people went into the water to try and help, but narrowly escaped with their own lives. The red flag was flying warning bathers not to enter the water due to huge waves and 40-knot winds. The Civil Protection discovered the bodies 150m off the beach.

Why is car insurance more expensive in Spain than in the UK? IT IS definitely true that car insurance is more expensive than ex pats are used to. However, you do get far more cover for your money with a Spanish policy. In Spain, it is the car that is insured, with cover for any driver (subject to the policy restrictions on age, date of license etc). Automatically included in the policy are Europe wide insurance cover and European breakdown cover. This means you can travel within EEC without having to pay more for a green card. Most policies also give glass and windscreen cover with no additional costs- UK policies will often have an excess of £50-£150. Breakdown cover and home start are included. There are many restrictions on towing cars in Spain and repairing them by the roadside. When telephoning and obtaining roadside assistance, depending on the insurer, the service can be equivalent to AA five star membership, meaning you do not need to seek additional cover. Another great benefit is a free Protected No Claim bonus via us (very few Spanish insurers offer this) and I assure you it is still unusual in Spain.
I HAVE AN 11 YEAR OLD PET AND HAVE ALWAYS HAD PET INSURANCE IN THE UK. IS THERE ANY INSURANCE COMPANY THAT WILL TAKE ON OLDER PETS? Yes there is, we use a company that is happy to insure old pets. Cover can commence at 8 weeks for both cats and dogs, and, despite a few restrictions, older pets can also be covered. There is immediate cover for accidents and emergencies with illness cover eff e c t ive 21 days from the date the insurance was taken. Your pet’s premium will be fixed for life and will stay the same price regardless of the number of claims you make.
I HAVE JUST BEEN GIVEN A QUOTE FOR HOUSE INSURANCE BY A WELL KNOWN COMPANY WHICH IS A LOT LESS THAN YOUR QUOTE. WHY? At first glance all house insurance policies seem to be the same, but this, of course, is not so. I am well aware of the company you are referring to; be careful that you are not seduced by just the price. On claiming you will be very upset about how little you are actually covered for. For example, the level of contents is calculated based on the number of bedrooms that the property has and, the sum insured based on €10.000 per bedroom does appear to be reasonable. However, the small print says that this amount will only be paid in the event of a TOTAL loss, this being defined as more than 85% of the contents figure. In my experience total loss claims are exceptionally rare. If a total loss does not occur then only set items that are listed will be covered. These are TV, DVD, dishwasher, computer, printer, oven, hob, hood, tumble dryer, fridge and jewellery up to €600 (13 items only).

by Jennifer Cunningham The Costas leading insurance consultant In my Company’s experience most large claims are for theft. What happens if DVDs, CDs, clothes, bed linen, small electrical items, food, alcohol, personal items, games, rugs, tools or more than €600 of jewelry are stolen? The simple answer is that these are the normal items stolen and you would not be repaid for the theft of these goods. And you don’t often hear of ovens and fridges being stolen. Finally, what happens if you have a fire which is contained in your living room? As well as TV and DVD you will need to replace your furniture, soft furnishings, lighting, pictures and personal effects. Again you are not covered. This means the policy is not cheap at all! If you are unsure on any points mentioned here, please take your documents to any of my offices and my staff will be happy to advise you about your exact cover. PS. Paul Cunningham Nurses continues to go forward and are introducing a new arm to the charity. Details to follow shortly.

Archery Club
MY 12 YEAR old granddaughter has taken up the sport of archery and is now at a stage where she would benefit by joining an Archery Club. Do any of your team, or any of your readers know of such a club that is within reasonable travelling time of Sax/ Villena? Thank you for your help and courtesy in this matter and also thank you and your team for an excellent paper. Yours truly, Ken Rockliffe (Torrevieja)

THH HAS never spoken a truer word saying the British Embassy may as well not exist. Last week’s papers are full of the Ambassador saying how they have all the organisations at Alicante Consul who will help people financially. He omits to say that the only people they will help are ex service. Also if the person was in a ‘top secret’ job that didn’t exist till the Libyan Embassy siege; then they can’t find out the details. I’ve sent two emails to Alicante, and neither has been answered, nor should I have expected them to. Previous experience has shown them to seem to be helpful. They send you to lawyers and official translators in Alicante. You then find out you pay four times the price locally (the staff tell you there is no one locally who can do it). I was sent to a lawyer. She assured me she could do an American divorce, took €350 from me and six months later refunded €50, telling me she couldn’t do it. They are a joke. Kay, Pego

Paying for murderers! CAPITAL PUNISHMENT: what a topic for discussion. Now that I am retired I have lots of time to reflect on the events over the last six decades: murder is one that keeps grabbing my attention as nearly every week in the UK there is a murder committed. Everyone now in the UK is being asked to pay for the economic situation that the governments and the banks have got us into. Look at the costs of keeping these murderers in jail with dry accommodation; three good meals a day; and first class medical and dental treatment. The last estimate of the costs to keep these low lives as reported in the Media was £800 per week per person; that’s over £40,000 a year. I am not a religious person but I was raised in the Christian belief ‘an eye for an eye and a life for a life’ when it is proven beyond a doubt that their life should be forfeited. The latest case featured a video showing the murderer on a footpath with a 2ton 4x4 running the victim down from behind. He has just been given life to serve a minimum of 18 years. In my opinion he has forfeited his right to live, along with the scum that murdered those two lovely girls in Soame, now trying to claim compensation for being attacked by other prisoners, and from the criminal injures board. What an insult to those two young lives. If he had been hung, as he should have been, this sort of incident would not happen. Then there is the Yorkshire Ripper trying to get parole. Also the famous actor from East Enders, enjoying a good life but the taxi driver that he murdered I don’t think is enjoying being six feet under, and his family will not see any grandchildren…the list goes on... The prison population would be down and the country’s pocket would better off if all murderers were given the right sentence and hung by the neck until dead! John, La Zenia
Can you trust your bank? Now where did I put my Guardian? ISN’T IT awful when you can’t even trust your Bank Manager? In 2007 we were assured that the money we were depositing with a very well known bank (with red livery) in the Mazarron area, was being placed in a high interest account with no risk. Since this time, we have discovered that although we were spoken to in fluent English and were made to sign a document opening the ‘account’, it actually turned out to be Bonds. These Bonds have lost a huge amount in value and the high interest was only for the first year. If this has happened to you, would you please let us know by phoning 634 066 270, alternatively email naharia2003@ yahoo.com.ar There is strength in numbers.
Battle of Britain 15th SEPTEMBER this year will mark the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. You may have seen in the media on 20th August the tribute paid by Sir Winston Churchill to the “the few”. 15th September is officially recognized as the date the Luftwaffe was defeated. Whilst ‘the few’ are getting fewer, support of our Air Force personnel ranging from the RAF Regiment support staff to the Air Crew has actually increased. The Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) founded on 28th February 1904 has always been family orientated,
acknowledging the efforts work of wives, husbands, mothers, dads and families who continue to support those afflicted through the trauma of war. Could you support us? A service will be held at the La Siesta Church at 11.00 on 15th September 2010 to commemorate the occasion. Your support makes all the difference to the bereaved, with more and more widows of the ‘the few’, than the few remaining. P J Haward MBE Chaplain to Costa Blanca Branch No 1359
THE LETTERS page is all too often filled with letters of thanks from charity organisations, warnings of how people were robbed on the road or airport etc., people moaning about green spaces (I told him he would not get what was promised) and other repeat letters taking up the space for letters of substance and real subjects, often printed in all the other freebies. On page 16, a waste of space, you have that twit (could have used another vowel there) Jon Gaunt who reminds me of why I stopped reading the Sun after issue No1. Anyway this half page could be used for
all those letters that I wrote about in para 1 and you could make a charge to put an item in. Let’s see how many people want to put all this drivel in for a fee. Page 24: now here is a half page worth reading: well written, informative and slightly humorous and here is the bonus if nobody wants to pay for an entry in the empty Gaunt half page we could have an extra half page of Paul Watts - that would be something to look forward to each Friday. Money spinner on roads for local police A FEW days ago, whilst on my mobility scooter on my way to the shops, I was overtaken by two large motor-cycles at about 60mph on the Avenida Convienio, La Marina. More surprising, a boy about four years old was perched on the petrol tank. Of course there were no police officers in the area and it crossed my
mind that the speed limit on that road is 30mph, totally ignored of course by every car that travels along there, day or night. I did think that the local police are missing a huge source of revenue each and every day, which would enable the local Authority to build a rest house near the shops, for the police car
and its driver, seeing that the previous grand schemes have now folded. Or to invest in a wonderful ramp to terminate the pavement, allowing a mobility scooter to leave the pavement safely. Thank you for your consideration: could it really happen? J D Churchill, La Marina, San Fulgencio

Yet more urbanisation problems! CAN I ask your readers for some advice on urbanisation problems please? (I know people are tired of it unfortunately). I have an apartment in Punta Marina. I chose a ‘bajo’ apartment because I wanted a garden. My community fees are twice what the people with solariums pay. Have other urbanisations amended the Spanish law and created an equal system of payment? Ironically, a number of people with first floor apartments and solariums have made them into gardens! The second thing is regarding garden maintenance. For more than 11 months my garden has not been maintained by the person paid to do the gardens on the urbanisation. She was verbally abusive to me after my complaints to the administrators and I advertised for my own gardener but she still refused to do it. This week, someone came to trim the edges. It has not done much to improve my garden but it gives me a bit more confidence that perhaps the urbanisation will do something about garden maintenance. I have asked the administrators if I have a right to expect that my garden be maintained if I pay my community fees and they will not respond. I have held back the fees until the matter is resolved. If I went to court over the matter would it be a waste of my time and expensive? Has anyone else had this problem? If so, I would be interested to know how you dealt with it. We have had 3 ‘presidentes’, all female and inexperienced. Mrs C Naylor
Come & visit Javea Gridlock! DO YOU fancy a nice sunny and hot holiday? Come to visit ‘Javea Gridlock’. Of course you will not get so much time this year on the beach or in the bars or restaurants as you wait in your car and try to play ‘Spot the Parking Space’ but you will get plenty of sun and heat while you are stuck waiting in your car, especially on the ‘Mickey Mouse Arenal’, as you play ‘Spot the Pedestrians’ that appear from behind parked cars doing a ‘Frogger’ and trying to reach the other side! This new layout was constructed this last Eastertime week, obviously by the Easter Bunny, to maximise the disruption of your holiday. To add to your fun as you crawl through the town you will of course still have plenty of time to play Suduko,
Bladder problem solution from The English Medical Clinic I READ with interest your article in 20-26th August edition regarding bladder problems. I am 74-years-old so people always assume that I, like so many ladies of my age, suffer with ‘leakage’ problems but they are wrong. I did but now I’ve found a solution to the problem. Sometime ago we were travelling to Alicante and stuck in a traffic jam. Needless to say by the time the traffic began flowing I was desperate for the loo and having found one I produced a lot of urine. There was then the most excruciating pain in the area. To try to ease the pain I used my panty-liner to press against the area where the
pain had erupted and to my surprise I urinated again and quite a large quantity. I then used a large wad of toilet paper and pressed the area again, and it happened again although this time was a lot less. I repeated the process until there was nothing left. I’ve continued with this process every time now - it’s amazing how much is left behind after we think we’ve finished urinating and it’s this that causes the leakage as I no longer need to use anything but the lightest of pantyliners when I go out and can even, during the hot summer months, dispense with underwear altogether while at home. Another added bonus

is that I rarely need to get up in the middle of the night. Reply from Amanda Collins Dip HE of English Medical Centre, Albir: What you are describing here is known as ‘residual volume’. Measuring the amount left in the bladder after voiding is one of the tests often performed when a patient presents with bladder problems. It is good to hear that the technique that you have discovered is having a positive impact on your life. However, we would urge anybody with such problems to see a Doctor, particularly if they are experiencing pain.
adding up all the numbers of all the different national number plates. On a more serious note, after I finally found a place to park I walked back to the Arenal (from Cabo La Nao) and looked at every one of the Disabled Parking bays; not one car in them was displaying a blue disabled badge. On one disabled bay and parked on the dividing line across the next parking bay, was a large van using two bays. I am disabled (a bad heart and arthritis) with a blue badge and something really should be done about this. Where were the cops? Visiting Keystone? Some people are obviously more disabled than me and it must be very difficult for them. We have already had a few accidents since the inception of the new
layout and more to come I would imagine. This is only one layout in ‘Javea Gridlock’ but I don’t think there is enough room on the letters page to mention all the ridiculous ideas (the plans were written in Gobbledespeak) of Javea street layouts and parking. And I have to stop writing now as the car in front has just moved up a little (I’m only joking about that!) Regards from Mick Scarles Still trying to park...

Bigot Pastor Terry Jones £1200 a throw! I AM going to employ whoever does the PR for Bigot Pastor Terry Jones as the man is a publicity genius. Terry Jones might share the same name as a famous Monty Python but his idea to burn copies of the Koran on the ninth anniversary of 9/11 is no laughing matter. This deluded fascist has only got a congregation of 50 but he has been making headlines around the globe after saying that Islam is an evil religion and he wants to “send a message to radical Islam that we will not tolerate their behaviour.” I am with him on the message to the Islamofascists. I can’t stand the way they burn our flag or burn effigies of our leaders or novelists in the street at the merest hint of an insult. However, Jones isn’t targeting just these nutters - he is tarring all Muslims with the same brush and by doing so handing a publicity and propaganda ‘own goal’ to those who seek to destroy our way of life. His church is in Gainesville in Florida, the real epitome of small town America. I went there once and it was closed, but seriously this man is a danger not only to our troops but also to all of us in the West.
MORONIC MEAT head boxer David Haye is still refusing to apologise for saying that his fight with Audley Harrison will be “as one sided as a gang rape.” He says he “Can’t say sorry for every stupid thing I say...” I agree with him, as the arrogant jackass would be constantly apologising after some of the ridiculous boasts and brags he has made in his career in an attempt to publicise his bouts. But this rape analogy is more than boxing banter or hype. I agree with Yvonne Traynor, the chief executive of Rape Crisis who says that “Gang rape is a serious and violent crime against humanity leaving the survivor severely traumatised, terrified and violated.” “For Haye to think that it is acceptable

to make this comparison is a serious lack of judgment and intelligence and shows that he neither knows what he is talking about nor who is going to be affected by this tasteless comment.” That’s a knockout comment and if Hayes is too thick to see the error of his ways then at least one of his advisors should write him an apology, preferably in words of one syllable and in crayon so that he can understand and deliver it. It’s a pity that boxing fraud Audley Harrison can’t knock the skin off the proverbial rice pudding as I would love nothing better than for Hayes to be severely knocked and slapped around the ring in their upcoming bout.

The Germans are having a go! PASS ME the horse hair shirt and the whip: we Brits are being told to apologise again. And this time it’s the blooming Germans who are having a go. Evidently the very noble idea of building a £3.5 million memorial to the 55 thousand airmen who died fighting the Nazis has upset councillors in Dresden who are accusing our brave boys of being war criminals. I come from Coventry, the city of international reconciliation, and I grew up hearing about the dreadful carpet bombing of both my home town and Dresden and of course both were appalling but what the good burghers of Dresden seem to forget is that bomber Command were on the side
of good against evil; the evil of Nazism and fascism. It was these 55 thousand men who sacrificed themselves not only to save our country but also to free Europe and indeed the German population. This memorial isn’t about glorifying war – it’s all about commemoration and the Germans who are protesting should shut up and just like you and me, dig deep and contribute whatever they can to the further £2million needed to complete the project at www.bombercommand.com

Success for Vega Baja leg of Tour de Spain by Louise Clarke MORE THAN 10,000 people watched the conclusion of the ‘Vuelta a España’ cycling tour last Friday as the Vega Baja stage drew to a close in the city of Orihuela. The Mayor, Monica Lorente, was delighted with the organisation of the event and praised all the municipal staff involved in making the city’s staging of the event such an overwhelming success. The event’s expenses were borne by the Provincial Diputación of Alicante and they saw a return on their investment of more than 400%, which will be an unexpected but welcome boost to the provincial bank account. Bars and restaurants along the 186 kilometre route all benefitted by the extra customers who were eager to catch a glimpse of the sight of the multi national cyclists from the tour as they made their way through the 14 included The Vuelta a municipalities of the Vega Baja. Other España businesses, such as supermarkets came to the Vega and pharmacies also benefited and Baja last the majority of hotels in the centre Friday of Orihuela had, for the first time this
Red light for streetwalkers By Jack Troughton STREET PROSTITUTION has been outlawed by Alicante City Council in new bylaws set to curb the sex trade in public places. The move sees the threat of fines and possible criminal prosecution to prostitutes and clients demanding sex. Penalties range from €750 for offering or requesting sexual services in the street and is doubled to €1,500 if the offence takes place within
summer, 100% occupancy. In fact some of the cyclists had to stay more than 20 kilometres away in the five-star La Finca Hotel in Algorfa because they were unable to secure accommodation within the city. The city of Orihuela was congratulated by all the media corporations at the event along with the cycle teams, which included the UK’s Team Sky, which unfortunately had to pull out of the tour following the sudden death of one of the team’s backroom staff on Saturday morning. More than 1.5 million television viewers watched the stage on television and Ms Lorente said that this can only be a positive thing for the city of Orihuela as it tries to attract potential tourists and visitors to the city. RTN watched the race from Rojales and was very impressed with the organisation of the event. Despite the intense heat from the midday sunshine, the cyclists eventually made their way through the Rojales streets at about 14.30 and more than 500 people lined the streets of the small provincial town to watch the event.
an ultra “forbidden” area - within 200 metres of a school. The punishment rises to €3,000 for having paid sex in a public place. The local authority aims to protect children, maintain the peace, and prevent the exploitation of ‘at risk’ groups. And while prostitution is not illegal, the council new has taken legal opinion before introducing the bylaws new legislation that would mean having sex in to curb public would be on a par with indecent exposure the sex trade or disorderly conduct.

Guardia Civil protest ONE HUNDRED Guardia Civil police officers held a demonstration in Madrid last week over the length of their working day: they want the length of their working day to be comparable to that of the national police. Officers were also calling for better pay. The Minister for the Interior, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, has announced that the ministry will attempt to resolve issues surrounding the number of hours worked. Meanwhile, the Guardia Civil say that they are planning another protest for 18th September, this time involving 20,000 officers.

The fight against the mozzie by Louise Clarke
THE LOS VERDES Spokesman for the Environment, Water, Urbanism and Homes in Torrevieja has offered to collaborate with the PP led Town Hall in organising a task force with the sole responsibility of spending the next few weeks eradicating the plagues of mosquitoes that have been causing havoc across the city and surrounding municipalities. The areas surrounding the salt lake and lagoon have been swarmed with mosquitoes in recent weeks, follow-
ing the unseasonable rain showers that occurred during August. The move to organise a task force came after the Torrevieja Municipal Group of Los Verdes wrote to the Town Hall to ask that something be done about the plagues of pests, as a matter of urgency. It is expected that a cocktail of pesticides, which will eradicate the swarms of ‘mozzies’ within hours, will be sprayed over the affected areas during the coming weeks. The Spokesman told RTN: “It is amazing just how
many people, especially adults, have been bitten by mosquitoes so badly that they have required emergency treatment at the hospital. As a result of being bitten, some have sustained allergic reactions that have caused their skin to blister and swell severely. These mosquitoes are clearly a public health hazard and must be dealt with accordingly.” Before next summer, the Los Verdes party hopes that the Town Hall will be working towards preventative measures to fight these plagues of mosquitoes and ensure that the same scenario is not repeated next year. The Spokesman continued: “Unfortunately, year after year, tens of thousands of people are affected by mosquito bites and we are looking at setting in place the correct systems and procedures required to combat these plagues. It could be as simple as the creation of an Observatory for the Control More of Plagues, which has already people been proposed on several ocneeding treatment casions by the Los Verdes for party who work within the mosquito Town Hall of Torrevieja.” bites

Can you home Sharpy?
TWO YEAR OLD pure bred Shar Pei ‘Sharpy’ was a recent victim of abandonment, found wandering alone, starving and blind. Local charity APAH asked RTN for help in finding him a new owner. “This is not an unusual occurrence these days,” said Margaret McCabe from APAH, “But what makes this a particularly evil and callous act is the fact that the poor dog cannot see. He hasn’t been micro-chipped so his owner cannot be tracked down and
held accountable for this uncaring act of cruelty.” ‘Sharpy’ cannot see people but recognises sound and is desperate need of an operation to restore his sight. Although he was pitifully thin when he was found, medically the only problem is his sight. Blood tests have shown that there is nothing else wrong with him. If you can home Sharpy, call APAH on 616 210 850 or 630 422 563.

Tony’s tome is already half price… Watts In Britain By
Paul Watts
HIYA FOLKS! Well, phew, I’ve received a lot of feedback on last week’s article about Tony Blair’s book. I am, as always, most grateful to everyone who got in touch. It does seem that a great many of you are of the opinion that Tony Blair’s offer to give the Royal British Legion his ‘proceeds’ from the book to be little more than a cynical and calculated PR move. For example Pam Foster wrote: “What a fantastic article I have just read in the RTN regarding the hateful Blair.” Oh gosh Pam thank you, my head will get really big now. She tells me she is an expat living in Spain with an axe to grind regarding Iraq. Pam says, “Yes, my first thought when I heard about the ‘donation’ was to send the money direct to the Help for Heroes charity instead.” Pam thinks this will be a much better course of action rather than buying the book. As she says, if you really want to know what Blair has to say, all the papers will carry the best bits anyway: sound thinking Pam. She also wonders would the Blairs, “...have sent their sons out to Iraq?” Answers, please on a postcard… Bobby Robertson writes, “Tony Blair and his wife are a horrible pair… who don’t give a damn for their country only their greedy selves.” He adds, “as far as I am concerned they are traitors.” Bobby says of Blair’s donation: “He is giving the money to the British Legion because he feels guilty and hopes that it will help to ease the pain when he is confronted by some of the mothers, fathers and wives of the poor girls and boys he has sent to a fruitless death: it’s Blood Money.”
Bobby warns us, “Don’t be taken in by him. He has finished up with more money than most of the dictators he was supposed to be against!” Bobby is also incensed that the British taxpayer has to pay for Blair’s personal protection. He asks, “Do you think it is right that we should be paying for his minders and bodyguards? He should pay for his own protection - out of the fortune we have given him whilst he was messing our lives up.” Well, Bobby, a little good news on that front as the cancelling of Blair’s book signing means the taxpayers will not have to fork out the massive £273,000 security bill to protect him from angry protesters. The public event due on Wednesday 8th at Waterstone’s flagship store in central London was cancelled after warnings that it would cause a massive security headache for police. A demonstration outside the store was threatened and according to the Daily Mail, “Protesters against the Iraq war even promised a £30,000 bounty to anyone who manages to arrest Mr Blair.” Me, I would gladly have paid twenty quid towards that eventuality. Meanwhile, Stop the War Coalition’s spokesman, Andrew Burgin, suggested that copies of Blair’s book, ‘A Journey’, should be “signed in blood”. He told ITV News, “We are appalled that Waterstone’s were even prepared to have him on their premises.” He added, “It is a disgrace that he is swanning around with police protection at our expense – he should be in The Hague on trial for war crimes.” Mind you if anyone had gotten into Waterstone’s to meet the grinning fool, it
would’ve cost them top dollar to buy the book with his moniker – there were no discounts proposed. And there were to be no thrills either because photographs or dedications were strictly verbotten... and no actual guarantee that Blair would even sign your book. ‘You pays your money: you takes your chance!’ Look what happened to those poor deluded souls in Dublin who queued for a signed copy of Tone’s tome. They had to endure strict security and were stripped of their mobile phones and other personal possessions - I thought at one point they’d have ‘em waiting in line in their undergarments. Organisers issued a strict ban on taking photographs of Blair (I suppose they didn’t want anybody capturing him off guard in true money-grabbing mode with a sinister sneer). Also, His Royal Tonyness didn’t write personal dedications. A factotum from the bookshop haughtily told the media: “We are working to ensure as many people as possible get to meet Mr Blair and get a signed copy of ‘A Journey’. This is why it sadly isn’t possible to do dedications.” Sadly, huh… My dad has a tea mug with the simple inscription “Bo***cks to Blair” on it. I would refer this sentiment to that spokesperson. I did a little research myself and popped into my local bookstore in Sussex to see how the book was doing. The ever-helpful and charming Charlotte whispered to me in conspiratorial tones that most people who had bought the book seemed to find it necessary to qualify why they had done so. She seemed to think many of those
buyers felt a tad guilty. She smiled, “Maybe I should give them all a plain brown paper bag to hide it in!” Charlotte did reveal though, much to my horror that the shop was into its second batch of ‘Journey’. Oh, gawd, second batch… Mind you they have slashed the cover price by half. And up the road in the Heart Foundation one copy was already marked up at £1.50! Anyway folks, upwards and onwards, we’ve spent too long on Blair as it is. In the shops the Christmas goods are making an appearance and soon it’ll be time for the party political conferences. So much to do, so little time… Watts in Blairtain, so you don’t have to be…

The international production team
by Jack Troughton REHEARSALS ARE underway for an international production of the hot stage musical Grease with more than 80 youngsters taking part in the show. Every Saturday children aged from six to 16 will be put through their paces singing, dancing and acting at Karuna in Altea. The cast – picked during June auditions – make up seven nationalities all bonding together to tread the boards at the auditorium
in La Nucia on 28th and 29th January and 4th and 5th February next year. Pascalle Bruens, director of Streetwise Productions, is looking forward to working with her young cast and believes the show can only help everyone integrate into the local community. Pictured are some of the production team – again an international effort – left to right Victor Martinez, theatrical assistant; Pascalle; assistant director Karen Johnson; and singing coach Philip Ashley.

By Jack Troughton GENEROUS MEMBERS of the Marina Alta Golf Society returned to Javea to make another donation of €2,000 to the cancer Care Advice Centre. Volunteers at the charity were delighted to welcome back the sportsmen and women – who made the first donation to the centre after its opening in 2008. Then Captain Michael Yaffe was keen to support the new venture and his successors Margaret Stevens and this year’s Captain Allan McManus have continued to back the charity. Pictured, Irene Ellis, President of Cancer Care, with charity volunteers and golf society members, accepts a cheque from Allan. The cancer Care Centre is open Monday to Saturday between 10.00 and 12.30. The services of qualified counsellor Margaret Lewis are available for free and advice covers all aspects of care. More municipalities implicated in ‘Brugal’ corruption case by Louise Clarke
Fenoll on his way to the trial in Orihuela Costa
Draft food safety bill approved
THE GOVERNMENT has approved a draft food safety bill. The main objective of the new legislation is to reinforce food safety issues for the public and promote healthy eating habits with a view to preventing disease. The Draft Bill prohibits discrimination on grounds of weight and establishes controls for food in schools. Furthermore, it establishes the creation of a Spanish Network of Laboratories for the Official Control of Food Safety, which will reinforce the monitoring of these issues.
THE TRIAL judge investigating the ‘Brugal’corruption case has announced this week that six more municipalities will be investigated. The head of Court No.3 in Orihuela, Carlos San Martin, has implicated the Town Halls of Pilar de la Horadada, Rafal, Jacarilla, Bigastro, Callosa and Algorfa in the corruption investigation. The announcement follows the lifting of part of the gagging order placed on the case, which initially was looking at the circumstances behind the award of the rubbish collection contract in Orihuela. The contents of the order, dated 2nd September, agrees to the part lifting of the proceedings
into the ‘Brugal’ case, so that the implicated parties may have access to police proceedings and the transcripts of conversations that were made as a result of the alleged phone tapping operation. According to a source close to the investigation, the document was sent to the relevant parties on Monday and the judge granted a period of 15 days for defence lawyers to study the submitted reports before beginning their defence case as part of the judicial investigation. INVESTIGATION On Tuesday, two reports were released into the public domain; one of 500 pages on the garbage collection
Viva Las Benidorm! By Jack Troughton BUSINESSMEN ARE pressing for a change in the law to allow a series of mini casinos to be opened in Benidorm’s hotels. Mayor Augustin Navarro is backing an application to the Gaming Commission to make the resort a special case and increase revenue and jobs – while attracting new visitors and sectors in the highly competitive holiday market. He believes Benidorm should be granted “special” status and allow gambling rooms – all part of the town hall’s vision of creating a modern holiday
destination capable of competing with rivals on an equal footing. The mayor said any arrangement should be exclusive to Benidorm. “We contribute much to GDP.... and we have to compete under the same conditions as other destinations in which this can be done. “These rooms would be very good for the hotels and the industry in general because they generate jobs, both directly and indirectly.” He admitted town hall coffers would benefit but said the plans intention was to compete in the market for mini and create a holiday “paradise”. casinos
contract in Orihuela and another of 800 pages which includes detailed plans of the area. The National Police has been investigating this case since 2007 and as a result the company owned by Ángel Fenoll, Colsur SL, has been at the centre of the allegations. The new municipalities which will be investigated have also contracted Colsur SL for their rubbish collection services and are made up of both PP and PSOE led Town Halls. The ‘Brugal’ case now has more than 50 defendants including the President of the Alicante Delegation, Jose Joaquin Ripoll, three Councillors from the PP led Town Hall in Orihuela and Alicante Contractor and Builder, Enrique Ortiz.

LAPS feline fine by Jack Troughton ANIMAL CHARITY LAPS is staging a Fun Day on Friday 17th September to raise cash to help support the growing numbers of animals it helps rescue. So far this year, the Local Animal Protection Society has given assistance to 65 dogs and 45 cats – mostly finding new homes in the Pego area where the charity is based. Founder member Chrissie Edwards told RTN: “the number of animals we are having to help sadly shows a huge increase in last year’s figures of 34 dogs and 22 cats, with no indication that thing are likely to improve in the near future.” She said LAPS was now working closely with another recently founded local animal charity SCAN (the Society for the Care of Animals in Need) – founded by a group of people with years of experience helping cats. “In broad terms SCAN will deal mostly with out feline friends and LAPS with dogs and other small animals in need.” Chrissie said money raised at the fund day would help finish work at the charity’s Sanctuary in Pego – where work had slowed in the summer heat. She said: “We are hoping the Fun Day will be a runaway success and put some much needed

A Brief Review of Wincham Consultants and our Inheritance Tax Services – Part 1 by
Mark Roach
Since Wincham has been writing for the Round Town News we have received many enquiries about our company and solution to avoid Spanish Inheritance Tax so I have supplied a number of the most popular questions posed by our clients. Please look out for Part 2 of this article in next week’s edition of RTN.
WHO HAS TO PAY SPANISH INHERITANCE TAX? Most owners do not understand that their Heirs and Company Director and their Estate may pay IHT in two jurisdictions, Spain Spanish Tax Consultant and their Country of Domicile. The reason for this is that in Spain the individual inheritor is taxed whereas in other countries, like the UK, it is the estate that is taxed. This could mean that on the death of an owner the surviving partner, or the owner’s Beneficiaries, could have a Tax Bill that virtually wipes out the entire Spanish Inheritance. Added to this is the cost of
Probate in both countries for the Inheritors. WHO MAY OWN A UK LIMITED COMPANY? The services we offer are available to both Residents & non Residents of Spain as any Nationality may own a UK Company. Whether you currently own a property in Spain, are about to purchase in Spain, or own the property in an Offshore or SL Company, we have a solution and method to help to transfer your property into a UK Limited Company. WHAT IS THE CAPITAL GAINS & TRANSFER TAX WHEN INVESTING A PROPERTY INTO A UK COMPANY? There is no CGT implication in Spain when you invest a property in Spain into a UK Limited Company, as the Hacienda has a method of calculating an investment value based on the original purchase price as shown in the Public deed, plus the 7% paid at purchase, plus the Notary fees, plus indexation for the years the property has been owned. This value is the new investment value into the Company with no CGT in Spain. There is a further benefit to clients who purchased their property before 1997 as before this date there was no CGT in Spain and this allowance will be calculated into the new investment value. The downside is that in 2007 the rules changed, for each day that the property is owned after 1st January 2007 one day is taken off the Tax free allowance, therefore shortening the Tax free time available for CGT. It is therefore beneficial to utilise this Tax free time now as in the future it will be eroded to zero.
Wincham Consultants Limited, Wincham House, Greenfield Farm Trading Estate, Congleton, Cheshire, CW12 4TR, England. (Wincham Consultants also have offices located on the Costa Blanca) UK Tel: +44 (0)1260 299 700 | Spain Tel: +34 965 830 991 | Email: iht.info@wincham.com | Web: www.winchamiht.com
CGT will not be applicable in Spain if the owner is a Resident of Spain for Fiscal reasons and over 65 and the property is their main residence. This means that the property can be invested at a significantly higher value with no CGT. This will save future CGT of 19% when the property is ultimately sold. When investing a Spanish property into a UK Company there is no 7% Transfer Tax on the transaction either. ARE THERE ANY ONWARD COSTS IN RUNNING A UK LIMITED COMPANY? It is very cost effective to own a UK Company as £500 to £700 a year will cover the maintenance and running costs of the Company including the filing of the accounts in the UK. By owning a property in Spain using a UK Company structure the individual owners are not required to submit a personal Tax Declaration (Return) in Spain for the ownership, instead the UK Company submits a single Declaration once a year which is submitted and filed at zero as a UK Company does not pay this Tax in Spain. A UK Company does not pay the annual 3% Tax in Spain as a UK Company is classed as a non resident Company of Spain not Offshore like Gibraltar or the Isle of Man, for example. Offshore Companies attract a 3% annual Taxation from Spain as these Countries are not part of the European Union. Our Clients website where they can register for a free illustration showing the IHT/ISD liability in Spain or to research further information on this subject is www.winchamiht.com alternatively please call one of our Consultants in the UK or Spain.

Can we stop our father from making decisions that will affect him and my mother? by
Marc White & Carlos Baos
English & Spanish Solicitors MY FATHER lives in Alicante (Javea) and is 84-years-old. He is not as mentally able as he was and I have observed that his capacity is beginning to deteriorate. My mother who lives with him is very worried as he has made some rather odd investments and has lost quite a large amount of money. Even though we have told my father repeatedly not to make any decisions without consulting with us, he doesn’t listen and we are worried that he will end up losing his and my mother’s estate, or that he will make poor decisions as he is no longer able to think clearly. Is there anything legal that we can do? How can we stop our father from making decisions that will affect him and my mother? Dear reader thank you very much for your query. The answer to your question is YES, the Spanish legal system provides in these cases the possibility of initiating procedures for disability ( incapacitación), regulated by the Code of Civil Procedure - Civil Jurisdiction Law (Ley Enjuiciamiento Civil), in the 748 and subsequent articles. The procedure is to limit the’ capacity to act’ of your father, that is, he cannot make decisions or reach agreements by himself. According to the Spanish Civil Code (Código Civil), Article 199, a person can be declared unable only if it is ruled by a JUDGE, that is, your father can keep making decisions, signing agreements etc. unless a court determines that he is incapable. According to Article 200 of the same Civil Code the following are causes for disability “the persistent diseases or disabilities such as physical or mental condition that would prevent the person governing himself.” Therefore, in your case, the court proceedings for disability would try to prove that your father has psychic and mental deficiencies
that prevent him from taking the right decisions. In connection with the proceedings of incapacitation, it could highlight some features such as: A number of features that are also common in family proceedings, minors, etc., such as: the intervention of the prosecution is mandatory, that the parties must be represented by a lawyer, etc. It is important to note that in relation to the tests that will be performed in the proceedings, the court can request as many examinations as it deems necessary, since what matters in such cases is to know the proven truth and it is not relevant whether the parties agree on certain points. WHICH COURT HAS JURISDICTION? The court that has jurisdiction to declare the disability is the court that rules in the place where your father is domiciled. In this context we mean ‘domicile’ as interpreted by Spanish law, namely the place where the person lives. Locus standi: (who can ask the court to declare that your father lacks capacity?) According to Article 757.1 of the Civil Procedure Act, an application for incapacitation can be brought by the spouse or whoever is in a similar situation, e.g. a partner, and also the descendants, ascendants or siblings of the alleged disabled (art. 757.1 LEC). In addition, any person (being not those mentioned above) could inform the public prosecutor of the alleged unfit individual so that the prosecutor could take action to have the person declared disabled (art. 757.3 LEC.). Expert and specialist report. In this type of case, the performance of specialists in medicine and psychiatry is very important and the Article 759.1 of the LEC states that “a decision over the disability can never be made without a report from the medical expert agreed by the Court” because the judge needs to know what are your father’s limitations in order to determine the conditions of disability, extent etc. Decision making by your father during the court proceedings: this is a procedure by which your father may lose important rights such as his ability to make decisions on his own and therefore it will only come into force when the court has ruled and a Court Order-Sentence (sentencia judicial) has been issued. Until this happens, your father can
continue to make decisions. It is also true that the law provides the possibility of taking precautionary measures (medidas cautelares) by the judge, to prevent your father from performing certain acts, which may affect his or your mother’s estate during the proceedings. These measures can be taken by the judge, during or even before the proceedings. The precautionary measures taken by the judge may vary, he can order your father to be admitted to a hospital for treatment, or notify the Land Registry and the Civil Registry so that he can not sell properties, or any other measures that the court deems appropriate, including precautionary measures that would prevent your father from acting or managing his property, or could even appoint an administrator. Purpose of procedure: Through a process of disability you can get the court to deprive your father of his capacity to act, to sign any relevant agreements, or just to put a limit on it. In these matters, we must bear in mind that according to the specific circumstances of each case, this declaration of incapacity will produce legal effects or other, thus: 1. Your father may be fully or only partially deprived of the capacity to act, e.g. the ability to reach valid agreements, etc. 2. An order will be issued appointing a deputy for your father and the actions that this deputy can take will be established as well as the extension of the system of guardianship. 3. If necessary an agreement could be reached for the placement. Finally we must remember that the disability court sentence is not legally ‘final’ in the sense that if your father is declared unfit but then his mental capacity improves, he can stop or reduce this cause that led to his declaration of incapacity, providing the court ruling states that the scope of disability established that can be reversed or modified. (art.761.1 LEC). Should this be your case or the case of someone you know please do not hesitate to contact us. Men still get paid more than women THE GOVERNMENT is attempting to close the wage gap between men and women in Spain. The Minister for Equality, Bibiana Aído, presented the main conclusions reached by a study entitled ‘The Wage Gap: Realities and Challenges’ last week. The study endeavours to analyse the ‘hows and whys’ surrounding the wage gap between men and women in Spain and is principally aimed, according to Bibiana Aído, at “increasing our knowledge of this phenomenon as a means to implement new lines of action”.

UK pensions - a policy of confiscation? Is QROPS the solution? by
Stephen Ward & Robert Burns We have just been sent a link to a website that made a terrifying statement about pensions in the US. For anyone who has a UK pension fund please do read this article and consider it in the context of what the UK government is doing and proposing to do to your UK pension. Whilst considering what the US government is planning, ask yourself the question does this also amount to a risk of confiscation for my UK pension fund? If you think it does then as an expat you have the opportunity to do something about it – QROPS may well be the answer. THE US “PLAN” FOR PENSIONS Back to the “terrifying statement”. (The term “IRA” means “individual retirement account” and a “401(k) account” is a form of American pension scheme rather like a British personal pension.) “The US government plan is to eventually take ownership of
all assets in IRAs and 401K accounts and replace them with US government “Treasury Retirement Bonds.” This conclusion arises from the fact that: “On August 26, the US Department of Labor issued a news release which lists the agenda for joint hearings being held with the Department of Treasury on September 14-15, 2010 about what is euphemistically called “lifetime income options for retirement plans. The hearings are being conducted by the Labor Department’s Employee Benefits Security Administration.... The unstated agenda of these hearings, as I understand it, is to push for the US government to eventually nationalize (confiscate) all assets in private Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and 401K plans”
SO WHAT IS THE UK GOVERNMENT UP TO? Well two things come to mind: 1. The measure of inflation that is used to protect the value of the UK pensions both in the public sector and private sector is changing from the Retail Prices Index (RPI) to the Consumer Prices Index (CPI). The effect on pension liabilities in the public and private sectors is estimated to reduce the long-term burden of pension provision by about £100 billion. “Reduce the burden” -- more like reduce pension benefits....sounds like confiscation? 2. Draft legislation has been prepared to make a technical change to UK pensions law. This will have the effect of making it
impossible to transfer your UK pension rights from most final salary pension schemes to a personal pension after April 2012. So you end up being trapped in an environment where the statutory long-term protection of your pension is being compromised because of the change in the inflation protection. Once that entrapment has taken place then who knows what might happen in the future. SO WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT? Fortunately the UK law changes referred to above do not prevent you (even after April 2012), from transferring your UK pension rights to a QROPS. And it gets better in that if you are quick about it you may well still be able to get a transfer value that reflects RPI indexation rather than CPI indexation -- in other words a transfer value that is higher than it will be in the future. Do you remember Swap Shop? by
Suzanne O’Connell
IT WAS that wonderful programme on a Saturday morning when you could ring in and exchange something you didn’t want for something you did. I never rang in but I loved the idea of being able to trade in that duplicated gift or unwanted present. The principle was a good one. One practised regularly in playgrounds everywhere as cards, conkers and other miscellaneous items were swapped until the arguments started and the item was banned. The problems usually began when someone decided they wanted something back, or someone’s mum realised that the rather expensive green flash trainers had been traded in for a yoyo. So it’s with some scepticism that I find myself making enquiries about home swaps. After all, if you can’t get swapping Pokémon cards right, it’s hardly likely to work with houses – is it? I ASKED PILAR RUSO AT ÁBACO ASESORES ABOUT PROPERTY EXCHANGE This is the practice of swapping your home with someone else on a
permanent basis, a little like a holiday swap, but for good. Is it really a viable alternative for people wanting to sell their home? “It is. In fact the legal process is just the same. You still need to change the name on the title deeds and make arrangements with utilities. You will also still have taxes to pay. For example, if you are a non-resident there will be a ‘3% retention’ whilst your capital gains are assessed. So you need some spare cash to see the exchange through. We still complete searches and proceed in exactly the same way as we would if it was a more conventional house purchase.” What is different, Pilar explains, is that you are both buyers and sellers at the same time with the same person. Once you find someone ready to swap you must agree – will this be a straight swap or is there a significant difference in the value of one property to another? If there is then it might become more of a part exchange.
as anxious as you to see it through. There’s no chain involved and you are less likely to be ‘gazumped’ (if that still happens now!) Where the housing market is depressed it can help preserve the value if you are exchanging like with like. It also cuts down the cost of your solicitor as buying and selling is completed at the same time. The disadvantages? Finding the right match is still not going to be easy
SO WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES? For people who are keen to move it narrows down the search and you can be sure that your buyer/ seller is
Noel Edmunds and Keith Chegwin in Saturday Swap Shop
and there must be a great deal of compromise and flexibility. Your selection is based as much on finding the right person as finding the right property. SO IS IT BECOMING A MORE POPULAR ALTERNATIVE? “I have had more enquiries this year than ever before,” says Pilar, “if you can find a good match it can be a very feasible and creative alternative in today’s housing market.”

Question: I really want to take part in your 3 detox program but I am unable to have a colon hydrotherapy treatment for medical reasons. Are there any other options?
by
Carol West
The Kamala Centre, Calpe
ANSWER: IN OUR three day detox program, clients have 3 colon hydrotherapy treatments in 3 days and we provide them with 3 days worth of nutritious and healthy juices. It has proved to be the most popular thing we have ever done and we are usually booked up a week or two in advance. We have now had several clients lose over 10 lbs in 3 days and many people have commented how much healthier they feel with more energy than they have had in years. We have also had several people contact us because they either, like you, cannot have a colon hydrotherapy treatment or really do not fancy the idea of such a treatment but would still like the benefits of a 3 day detox. As from September we have added two further 3 day detox plans to try to meet everyone’s needs. The first addition is called The Cleansing 3 Day Detox. You still receive the wonderful 3 days of juices and the 7 days of pro-biotics. But in addition you receive 3 massages in 3 days. On day 1 you receive a colon massage; on day 2 a lymph massage and on day 3 a fantastic Balinese
massage. The total cost for all this is only €160. The other option is for those who are short of time or finances, called The 3 Day Juice Detox. With this you receive 3 days of nutritious juices, 7 days of pro-biotics plus either a colon hydrotherapy treatment or a colon massage all for €120 If you are fit and well and really want to make a change we would always recommend our main program The Ultimate Detox with 3 colon hydrotherapy treatments, 3 days of juices and 7 days of pro-biotics for only €200. Following requests from clients we have added a couple of optional extras to the treatments at reduced prices. You can add a food intolerance test of over 600 items and/or a session of EFT (emotional freedom technique) or hypnotherapy for an additional €40. We hope the addition of these other packages along with these optional extras will encourage you to join the hundreds of people who have already chosen to detox their lives. Correct whiplash injuries for longer lasting spinal health! AT ONE time in our lives we have probably all been involved in some type of car accident with the effects of whiplash affecting 90% of us in some way. The major trauma from a car accident is often worsened by the fact that the impact comes as a surprise and we do not have a chance to brace ourselves. Other factors which change the severity of the whiplash include the type of crash (with side-on crashes causing more damage than bumper to bumper); the presence of a headrest; the angle of the seat; and the safety features of the car. For people who have suffered whiplash, symptoms can often present a day or two after the event and can vary to include neck pain and stiffness, muscle tightness across the shoulders, headaches, dizziness, and referred pain into the arms. Although neck symptoms are nearly always felt after a car accident, pain can be felt as low down as the lumbar region. When a whiplash injury occurs, a number of structures can become stretched, damaged or snapped such as ligaments, muscles and tendons. Over varying periods of time these tissues will repair to resume their normal roles. However, when the cervical spine (neck) experiences the trauma of a
whiplash injury it causes the vertebrae to become misaligned and the neck may lose degrees of normal motion. If misaligned, vertebrae are not corrected after whiplash and the spine will show premature ageing after just 12 months, with advanced stages of arthritis appearing as early as 10 years after an accident. At the Chiropractic Centre we often see two types of whiplash patients: The acute ones who come in shortly after the accident: with these patients we are able to restore the correct position and motion of the neck. This gives the patient fast pain relief and will minimise or eliminate the effects of premature ageing of the spine. The second type are those who after the initial pain subsided, experience a secondary episode up to 10 years later due to the early onset of arthritic changes. With these patients the process of arthritis cannot be reversed but the progress of it can be slowed or even halted. With both types of patients chiropractic can deliver great results, reducing pain, improving function and minimising the effects of secondary arthritis. Raquel Peña triumphant Rojales return by Mike Walsh THE CELEBRATED Raquel Peña Flamenco Dance Company is set to return to the Capital Theatre, Rojales, by popular demand. It has been described as a spectacular Andalusian riposte to Michael Flatley’s internationally celebrated ‘Riverdance’. There will be many new dances, new costumes, and a guitarist/singer as guest artiste. Dance diva Raquel Peña, set to make a personal appearance, says she is always saddened when theatre goers are turned away disappointed: “Our unscheduled surprise return on Sunday 7th November will help to make amends,” she says. The legendary dancer, who recently packed them in at the Orihuela Costa Resort, has entertained US presidents and British royalty during worldwide performances.
Sponsorship is welcomed and generous provision will be made in favour of Torrevieja Age Concern. Tickets priced at €10 may be reserved by calling 630 689 431 to ensure seats at the 17.30 start of the show at the town’s 700 seat Capital Theatre.

Speak a poem competition By Jack Troughton THE DEADLINE for entering the second year of the ‘Speak-aPoem’ competition is fast approaching with organisers hoping for more entries. Club Monte Pego is running the challenging contest for spoken poetry for the second year – and again organisers underline it is open to absolutely everyone without age limits. However, to take part entries – including name, address, telephone number, email address and an entry fee of €10 - must be sent to Jane Corbett, Buzon 1055, Urbanisacion Monte Pego, Alicante 03780, by 30th September. In return, entrants receive an invitation to speak poetry and the syllabus itself, containing many poems. Heats will take place on a Monday evening in October and the six finalists will compete before judges on Monday 29th November – all staged at Monte Pego, near Denia. In front of an audience and the panel, they will give a 10 minute rendition including set poems and a piece of their own choice. The winner will be rewarded with a cash prize, a poetry book and certificate, and an invitation to speak a Christmas poem at Monte Pego’s carol service on 23rd December.

Childs & Bleakley: Dynamic duo? The TV Round Up by
Alex Trelinski
Broadcaster and freelance journalist
CONTEMPORARY LIFE has been littered with great partnerships, be it Tate and Lyle, Rolls and Royce, Laurel and Hardy or Simon and Garfunkel. Such duos are formed as a result of a period of friendship and mutual respect, but in the world of broadcasting and television, such combinations are often shotgun weddings at the whim of an executive that hopes something might work out. The sad reality is that the majority of pairings are doomed to failure, not necessarily due to incompetence but simply because there is no chemistry between the duo involved, or more than likely that they just don’t get on together. The best combinations come from natural evolution rather than a series of auditions and fanfares of publicity which end up in the whole thing being a flop. When GMTV mercifully disappeared down the plughole of the ITV network a week ago, how many of you would have remembered the names of the first presentation team of Michael Wilson and Fiona Armstrong? Or do you recall on its superior predecessor, TV AM, the very early pairing up of Anna Ford and David Frost to offer us some sexual chemistry, which clearly would have been more evident in an amoeba. Terry Wogan hooked up a few years ago for a midmorning Channel Five flop with Gaby
Roslin, and don’t get me started on Five’s early evening fiasco, which at least had the good sense to permanently sedate the loud-mouthed Ian Wright with a recent non-contract renewal. In the history of British TV, you can count on the fingers of one hand how many duos have really hit the mark of being brilliant at their work, and combining it with looking at ease in front of the camera, as well genuinely liking each other. Despite their detractors, the husband and wife team of Richard Madeley and Judy Finnegan clearly had that little bit extra going for them, perhaps depending as well on their social engagements the previous evening. They had an edge on screen that worked. Likewise, Ant & Dec, who from working as teenage actors and pop singers together, have made live tv presentation seem to be as easy as fixing a game of test cricket. The issue of being natural and the ability to improvise is something that is fundamental to a good team, and it needs to be learnt by the new ‘One Show’ presenters Jason Manford and Alex Jones. The whole thing looks so over-rehearsed with their eyes at times mesmerised to the autocue with superglue that you wonder if they would notice if one of their guests decided to enter into a session of gross profanity. It’s still a good programme,
Adrian & Christine are the new faces in the mornings on ITV
and with time they might relax more and be more confidant of their skills and how to react to each other. Plus they do have likeability, so fingers crossed for them. Their predecessors, Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley took over the helm of the new ITV breakfast offering ‘Daybreak’ on Monday, after an enforced four month hiatus when Chiles left dramatically for ITV in April. Whatever some people at the BBC tried to say in a petty ‘rubbishing’ campaign, Chiles and Bleakley were the major factors in making the ‘One Show’ a hit….no mean achievement when you’re up against the bed-hopping antics of Emmerdale. Full credit to their abilities that they
looked completely at ease with a new much longer show on a new network, and I predict that they’ll be overhauling the BBC’s market lead at that time of the morning, especially since the purile content of GMTV has been replaced by some genuinely interesting items for that time of day. Also in the next year or so, the BBC seem set to break-up their excellent Breakfast partnership of Bill Turnbull and Sian Williams, who don’t seem to be crazy with the idea of going with the programme to its new home at Salford Quays. After the fiasco of the ‘One Show’, it looks like Auntie Beeb is getting her old bloomers into a right old twist again!

Diana Waite: soulful songstress Forthcoming events Vibes From The Costas by
Tony Poole
from www.vibesfromthecostas. blogspot.com
THE VOCAL Booth Weekender has announced the timetable for the biggest house party ever to hit the Costa Blanca, and it’s an amazing schedule featuring a cram-packed programme of internationally renowned DJ’s including Phil Asher, Grant Nelson, Ricky Morrison, NYC’s Hippie Torrales and host Andy Ward. There’s also a unique opportunity to attend a music production seminar by Danny J. Lewis from Point Blank based on the successful Deep And Soulful House Course, and it all kicks off with Andy presenting his weekly Vocal Booth radio show live next Thursday evening, poolside from
the Montepiedra Hotel… how cool is that! Live PAs throughout the weekend include soulful songstress Diana Waite: “I’ve always sung” says Diana, “Whether it was the tunes on the radio or the old soul records my Mum played; I just sang along.” By the early 90’s Diana became hooked on Soulful House, “It was the sound I’d been looking for” recalls Diana. It wasn’t long after she connected with Soul Central’s Andy Ward and Timmy Vegas. Andy says “We’d been searching for a vocalist to work on a new project. We listened to Diana’s demo and knew she was a perfect fit. We released a double A sided single ‘Faith’ together with ‘Memories’.” Soon after, Andy introduced Diana to his mix down engineer, Deep Josh, at D10 Studios in Murcia. Josh invited Diana to work on a release for his new record label ‘Applefunk Records’. ‘Reach For Me’ hit the record stores to wide acclaim from DJ’s across the globe. Diana has amalgamated an impressive record release schedule as her reputation continues to grow. This year, Scottish producer Colin Sales contacted Diana. “Colin was infectious” remembers Diana, “Working with people who have a real understanding of Soulful House is always a bonus and Colin certainly knows his stuff!” After swapping ideas, ‘Show Me’ hit the stores. Colin drafted in Groove Cocktail, Dominic Martin and Mango Street Connection for remix duties and the track immediately jumped into the Traxsource Charts with support from Roger Sanchez, Tony Humphries and Hippie Torrales. DaddyFunk Records were the next label to ask Diana to lend her sultry voice to ‘Release Yourself’ which features remixes from CoCo De Mar, Soul De Marin, Robert Rivera and Nicolas Bassi. This got great reactions from industry heavyweights Stereo Sushi, Master Kev and Robert Owens. Diana writes and records her own lyrics and continues to work with producers from around the world. In addition to lending her vocals to tracks, her voice-overs are in great demand and she is the official voice of Pressure Radio and Reelgroove Records. Diana is honoured to be invited once again to perform at this year’s Vocal Booth Weekender, Sept. 17th-19th in Campoamor, and will be arriving armed with two brand new projects which she is looking forward to performing for the first time. Weak and strong vowels Spanish lessons by
Jane Cronin
A weekly ‘cut out and keep’ feature helping you to learn basic Spanish for everyday needs
Lesson 123
Singer wanted HARMONY SINGER wanted, able to sing the high part (up to top G) in a ladies’ a cappella quartet. Ability to read music not essential as teach tracks provided. Our current lady has had to return to the UK at short notice. For more information contact fenixquartet@gmail.com or call June on 617 893 464.
We were talking about the rhythm of words, and how important it is in both English and Spanish. Understanding where the beat goes in a word is so fundamental to communication, that I am always surprised not to hear it mentioned more often. In our own language it is completely unconscious; which is all the more reason why we should pay attention to it when learning another language. We have looked at the three basic rules of word stress in Spanish, which are really straightforward. They mean that we can always be confident in knowing exactly how a Spanish word should sound by the way that it is spelt, and whether it has an accent or not. There is one last matter to deal with before we have the whole picture, and this is slightly more complex, but again completely fixed and regular. The first thing we need to learn is that the five Spanish vowels that we know and love so well, for the purposes of this subject, are divided into “weak” and “strong” vowels. The three strong vowels are A, E, O and the two weak vowels are I and U. If it helps you to remember which one is which, it is connected to the shape of the mouth. A,E and O are sounds made with the mouth wide open, whereas with I and U the mouth is narrower. As you know, many words in Spanish have combinations of vowels in them, possibly even the majority of words. There are many thousands of examples, so here are just three – aceite, puedo, residencia. As you will see, each of these words has a different vowel combination “ei”, “ue”, “ia”. In fact, if you look at any text in Spanish you will find examples of every possible combination of vowels. One or two are less common, and I’ve only ever found one case of the “ou” combination which is “estadounidense”.
Anyway, back to the point. If you look at the three examples “aceite, puedo, residencia” you will see that in each case the combination is of one weak and one strong vowel (ei, ue, ia). When this combination occurs, in whichever order, it is counted as one syllable. Therefore “aceite” is a three syllable word, “puedo” is a two-syllable word and “residencia” is a four-syllable word. If you remember the rules of stress we learnt last week, you can work out where the beat goes on each of these words. All three of them fall into the category of words ending in vowels, which have the beat on the last but one syllable. Therefore they sound like this: aCEIte, PUEdo, resiDENcia. In the case of “residencia” you will see that, since “ia” counts as one syllable, the beat goes on the syllable before DEN. If nothing else, this should answer the eternal question – how should we say “farmacia” which is very often mispronounced by English speakers. Since “ia” is only one beat, then it has to be “farMAcia”. When two strong vowels are put together, they count as syllables in their own right - hence, the next time you need the loo in a restaurant you should ask for the asEo, and not the Asio, as it is so often mispronounced. Mind you, they always know where you mean for some reason. Finally, when the beat does actually fall on the weak vowel in a “weak-strong” combination, this is indicated with an accent: for example “panadería”, the accent making it a five-syllable word. I know I have condensed a lot of information into one article, but the idea is that you spend the rest of the week, or month, or year, testing it out for yourself to see if I am telling you the truth, and if I am, to help it stick in your mind.
Step By Step - Microsoft Office Word 2007
Book Review by
Danny Collins
copy@dannyjpcollins.com
YES, THIS is the book not the software program so you’ll have to shell out the appropriate amount to get Office 2007 on your computer. Once there, you won’t regret it but like all things Gatesy - it costs. Will you need it? Of course, eventually Mr Gates will make sure we can’t do without it – in fact 2007 already has a little autonomous quirk on communication with Word 2003 and its forebears. Simply, it won’t talk to them if you save in Word 2007 format. 2007 docs won’t open in 2003 or earlier programs. At least, they will but they’ll look like nothing you ever wrote. Currently that’s no problem, since on closing your document you’re invited to the alternative of
saving in Word 97 – 2003 format. That’s all right then but don’t forget, because until everyone gets the 2007 version you could find attachments winging back to you with ‘Wot?’ written in bold until everyone has the software; which is, of course, what our pal Bill wants. If you buy the full version, you’ll also find that while you can open old publisher files in Publisher 2007, which is included, it doesn’t work the other way around. Okay, that’s a nuisance but we’re not concerned with that here since we’re devoting this review only to the Step by Step guide to Word 2007. I’m just showing off because I’ve got the whole wagonload complete with whistles and bells. There’s no doubt this weighty volume will be needed as you delve into the new software. There’s even a CD included that contains the whole book contents, page for page, that can be conveniently slipped into a pouch on your laptop for travelling so you won’t have to lug the book about with you. So let’s look at the contents: Word 2007 has a dazzling array of features and opens from a smartly organized Office screen that you won’t need to leave as you work. Click on the icon top left and there are your Word commands, containing everything you ever saw in the older versions
plus a host you didn’t. If you’re a hack like me, you’ll be more interested in word processing; and there’s plenty of that with everything on view plus a clever font style change feature that’ll amuse the kids – yeah, well us really. But if you’re into diagrams, charts, mail-merge or graphics, symbols, and equations, Word 2007 will make your day, provided this Step by Step guide is at your elbow. I don’t regret going Office 2007 because the whole set of programs is refreshing and recalls that old thrill of newness that we once experienced when opening Wordstar and delving into the wonder of Word 95 when fontchange was the new miracle. But I’m glad I’ve got the book. So will you be if you get the Step by Step Microsoft Office Word 2007 and place it on your desk leaving room for the complete Step by Step Office 2007 that I’ll be reviewing soon. Both will help you to build on exactly the skills you want and to learn at your own pace. Be a geek by all means, why not? But be an informed one…. TUDENTS OF Philip Ashley’s popular ‘Sing for Fun’ workshops end the season in fine voice with a charity concert on Friday 24th September. The group will appear in ‘Celebration of Song’ at the Benissa Casa de Cultura and joining them on the night are Sounds Familiar, Adagio, Sue Benson, and Jo Baldwin. Music learned during Sing for Fun includes the opening number ‘Merano’ from Chess, ‘I’m a Believer’ by the Monkeys, ‘Someone to Love’ by Queen – but sung in the style of Glee – and a vocal only arrangement of ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’. Musical director Philip chose the songs to work on specific areas of the singing voice, such as breath control, diction, phrasing and voice control for close harmonies. With a musical range from choral songs to rock, the singers also have to constantly change the way they sound. And the group will be joined by the regular cast of Sounds Familiar and numbers from its recent show Musical Magic, vocal quartet Adagio will perform a selection of
material including A chorus Line and Beatles songs, Sue Benson – a member of Adagio – will also present numbers from her Benidorm cabaret, while Jo Baldwin, director of the English Choir and Coral Clasica Javienese, will sing a range of show tunes. The concert begins at 20.00 and tickets cost €12 each with 25 percent of ticket sales donated directly to the Lions Club of Calpe and Benissa to support charitable work in the local community. Tickets are available from members of the cast by calling 965 581 483, or online using a credit card or PayPal at www.soundsfamiliar.es

Growing autumn and winter vegetables (part 2) by
Clodagh & Dick Handscombe Practical gardeners and authors
LAST WEEK we looked at where you will be able to grow your own vegetables. This week we look at ‘why bother’ and ‘the early success factors’. WHY BOTHER? Well, you can grow them ecologically without the need to use chemical fertilizers insecticides and fungicides, and ecological/ organic vegetables are not that easy to trace. When you find them they are often not fresh every day, they are expensive and the range is limited. You can harvest your crops just before you need them and when at their best. You can grow the types and varieties of vegetables that you like and which contain the highest percentages of beneficial vitamins and minerals. For this reason we list the following bakers’ dozen of healthy vegetables for autumn sowings or plantings: Artichokes Beetroot Broccoli Brussels Sprouts Carrots Parsley, Peas
Onions Swiss Chard Broad Beans
Red Lettuces Radishes Shitake Mushrooms
It’s neither difficult nor expensive. Children can be involved in helping you or even with their own containers or raised beds. Not only might they start to like to eat more types of vegetables but the experience can help their school science studies and wean them away from mobile phones for a while. THE EARLY SUCCESS FACTORS Ensure you prepare an area of good soil or good mixes of composts before sowing anything. You will need a depth of 30cms for most vegetables. Enrich the soil or composts before sowing or planting. For containers worm compost or dried goat/sheep manure are useful buys. Try local garden centres and agricultural cooperatives for these. Naturally you can also use these in the garden but for large areas it will be more economic to get a load or sacks of composted horse or goat manure. Chicken manure can be used but compost it for six to twelve months and use sparingly as it is strong. ENSURE YOU HAVE A CONVENIENT WATER SUPPLY Keep the soil or compost just damp.
Growing Brussel Sprouts
If you avoid over watering and overfeeding you will obtain healthy plants and little need for using insecticides and fungicides. However, do watch out for snails from day one. It would be wise to use safe and ecological snail bait such as Neudorff’s Ferramol. Phone Juan Louis on 646 725 434 if you can’t find it locally. If you want new potatoes for Christmas, start them now. Buy some oldish-looking potatoes and place them in a dark place to stimulate the sign of sprouts before planting. Seed potatoes are normally only available for spring planting from January to early March. If you live in an area of heavy frosts it would be wise to cover plants with plastic

tunnel cloches from November onwards. A drip irrigation system to each row or individual plant will help you control the growth of weeds. Angel Works ANGELS ALWAYS seem to get the very best of publicity these days though they have been doing the same wonderful job for many years now. I guess that they must have the right agent to get such good results, but they have been constant, professional and ever present for as long as the World cares to remember. There is something rather wonderful about an Angel. Doing God’s work and saving the Planet they must sometimes cringe at what they are forced to experience here in a World where despite everything we still get ourselves into a mess and get things wrong. Don’t worry, it is in the brief of all Angels to assist when they are needed, and to come to us when they are called, but many people do not know the protocol involved in making contact. Angels do not live here on Earth. So too, each Angel has a specific job to do, and thus they are very busy. How do you then grab the attention of an Angel? How do you get to experience the help that only an Angel can bring? Well….how long have you got? Calling an Angel is not only long distance, but it is a case of their own priorities what response you get. Knowing the right Angel to contact does make a difference. Imagine calling a Call Centre here on Earth. You experience being connected with a set of people before you get to the person who may, or may not be able to help you. How wonderful would it be to have the direct dial number of that someone that you knew could help? Maybe you wouldn’t miss the constant rendition of “Greensleeves” and that recorded message that just really tells you that you are paying for this call, and you could be calling for a very long time. This is fine if you get the solution to your problem, but the Angels too have to pass requests around too, until the very best Angel for the job can be located. With a range of Angels that have distinct positions of responsibility there are Angels of high exaltation simply employed to illuminate the Throne of God; call one of them, and they maybe won’t have the experience that
will help you through the darkest night of the soul, or help you to win against the odds; but they will know an Angel that does. All requests are prioritised and sensitised so that the response can be as quick as it can be. The Archangels are situated closest to Earth, and they are regular visitors to this Planet. Over time they have learned to understand the simply cries of us poor humans floating in a sea of life, and sometimes feeling like we are drowning. After all it is only with instruction of a Guardian Angel that we survived our birth. This complicated way of reaching the World was denied to many, and for those of us who survived there is back up by our Guardian Angels until we are fast tracked out of this life, and taken resolutely by the hand and lead to the Other Side; when the time comes. Many of you have asked for details about my Angelworks workshops. Some ask if they can come, and that’s clearly something that they have to choose for themselves. Others feel that they need some spiritual knowledge that may be beyond them, but the Angels work with those who need them, or those who want to understand them more fully. Come prepared to work and you will enjoy the day and be fine. The Angel connection is a wonderful one. Each workshop member gets to leave with the name of their Guardian Angel, and that often starts the ball rolling. It is incredible that we can have such a close relationship and owe our current life to an attending Guardian Angel, but sadly do not know their name. Believe you me that name counts, especially when you can privately whisper in your Angel’s ear, and pass your message on straight to the source. Bypassing the queue? No. Taking an intimate step in the right direction? Yes, and it works, well Angelworks! NEXT ANGELWORKS: October 9th GUARDIAN ANGEL ASSIGNATION: www.kennycorris.net

Postbag Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com Kenny, my six year old son keeps talking about a lady with wings, he says that she is a white fairy and is often with him. Should I do anything? What is he seeing? Carole W. Your son is obviously seeing things that maybe you do not. Above all do not worry, but instead ask him to tell you when he sees his white fairy, and to tell you more about it. Children are highly psychic, unafraid and open, and these three abilities allow them to see more effortlessly. So long as your son is not afraid, and it very much sounds as if he is not, and he knows that you are interested, you can continue to share his sightings. If there has been a recent loss in the family it maybe that contact is being assigned to your son, and there will be nothing to worry about. horoscopes by Kenny Corris With a powerful Mars connected with an unsure Virgo there is no knowing exactly how things will go this week, especially as Uranus adds some confusion to the actions of this astrological trio. For sure you will come out of this smelling of roses, but there is more than all this than meets the eye and it would be good to set the record straight this time and resolve all that you can on the way for everyone’s sake. Venus is in cahoots with Pluto, and there will be a chance to be openly forensic over a matter of the heart. You need answers, but are too proud to ask directly, so allow some subtle energies to take control. With your planetary leader in your opposing sign of Scorpio, and Capricorn left to pick up the pieces there is a chance that you won’t want to hear just what you have to, because sadly you are partially to blame. The way ahead is paved with good intention, and even though you are very much not in the mood there comes a chance to make your escape. Things surely don’t have to get to rock bottom before you start to get your act together, and there will not be a better time to move on down the road, and to make a fresh start, than right now while the going is good, and the good should get going! The Pluto direct this week should sort out a lot of things. You have been on tenterhooks over something, and it is made clear to you that things have now adjusted, and your full control is restored. Others have a brief to want to organise your life right now, so it is time to show them what you can do, and to put your plan into action, so you can reap the many benefits due to you right now. With Jupiter in Pisces this is dreamy and romantic time for you, and a Leo in Love is a joy to perceive. Play by your own set of rules by all means, but know very well this time your terms and just exactly what you want because compromise shouldn’t be on the menu, and revenge is a dish best served cold for all to enjoy. Be positive and allow mighty Uranus to sort out anyone who seeks to divert your energies. Mars and Scorpio bring timbre to a situation which should have been resolved long ago, but which is forced to continue by the ego of someone who seems to want to make life difficult for you. Take all threats with a pinch of salt, and let it be known that if you do take over then there will be tears before bedtime, and more than a few home truths will be told with no holds barred this time around. Enough is enough! With Mars at your side there is now time to break through your defences and allow your heart to open once again. Your energies seem to be all over the place, and do not give up on an affair of the heart because sincerity is a highly prized emotion, and because times have changed. A good time to invest, or have a flutter; with the second house of Jupiter open to luck and fortune midweek. Your temper flares and this should act as a warning sign because you have so much stored anger within. In time, and with the right conditions maybe this can be sorted out rationally and fairly. It seems that although you are doing all the work that somebody feels that they should benefit from a bigger slice of the pie than they are entitled to. Avoid direct contact this week and monitor the situation carefully. Throw caution to the wind and think of yourself right now. It isn’t selfish at all, you deserve to have some fun, and this is to be seen as self preservation. Maintaining the balance now is so important because there are a set of more pressing actions you know that you really wouldn’t wish to make, but not unless you have to. Although wait and see will be hard make no immediate decision, you don’t have to! Pluto is sticking by you right now, and is asking you to look at something from the roots upwards. Ther is a chance, just a chance, that you have overlooked something, and that this omission is quite vital to restoring the peace over a tetchy situation. When faced with a situation that could so easily go either way, it is what you don’t say right now that is so important, and your timing has to be spot on. For someone to ruffle your feathers there must be something you are sticking up for, and your balance and need to establish equilibrium proves that you are not a happy bunny right now. Do not suffer in silence, and hold back on the temper, although someone needs to know in no uncertain terms just exactly how you feel over a current situation, and all that you will do to make sure it doesn’t happen. This is a good time to involve yourself in some further study, and to get your teeth into something you will greatly enjoy, and be stimulated by. You need to matter to yourself, and to put into practice all that you preach in helping someone who needs your tender love and care, but is afraid to ask. The next week sees you making worthy plans, and working toward just what you want to happen right now.
If it’s your birthday this week... Current astrological alignments are doing much to illuminate a very different way forward for you. Before you make your choices see things through from the other side before you make that vital and necessary first step out!

Discover the Costa Blanca
Derek Workman continues his series of excursions from his book ‘Inland Trips From the Costa Blanca’ which features 22 detailed trips that lead you to spots you’d never find by yourself.
Albarracín
NOTHING PREPARES you for Albarracín, with its narrow streets terracing up the hillside and the casas colgadas, houses with wooden balconies precariously hanging over the streets below. When Walt Disney had Mickey Mouse running around medieval streets in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, he must have conjured up the idea after a visit to this mountain-top village, where the streets are so narrow that neighbours not only can shake hands from their windows but probably share the same curtains! After a steep climb I arrive at the ancient centre and I’m immediately wrapped in a shroud of antiquity as I walk under a thick-beamed archway, with great oak posts sticking out at right-angles to support the houses above. With its crooked steps and battered ancient doors, it could pass for a location for a Charles Dickens story of the seedier side of London life. A sharp left at the end of a short passage leads me into the Plaza Mayor, the hub of village life. Stand in the centre of the Plaza Mayor, and in a 360-degree turn you’ll see a town square almost as it would have looked in the 16th and 17th Centuries but without the cars and café chairs of course. The buildings have been tidied but not ‘tarted up’ and the streets that radiate at odd angles are like cobbled, stone-and-iron canyons; up steps, around sharp bends, down tiny alleyways, where even in the height of summer only shadows dwell. The Plaza is dominated by the Ayuntamiento, the Town Hall, which forms a U. The square has its origins in the 13th Century, when it was built on the foundations of the ancient wall, but the more ‘modern’ building of the Town Hall is the result of a total renovation in the 16th Century, built in the typical Arogonése style of architecture of the period, with its colonnaded lower level providing shade during the heat of the summer months and the snows of winter. A black and white photo of the Plaza Mayor, taken during the 1950’s, shows that nothing has changed structurally in the intervening half-century. For centuries, the Plaza Mayor was the end, or perhaps the beginning, depending in which direction you were headed, of the road to Molina de Aragon, hence the name of the tiny street, barely a couple of metres wide in some places, that heads off into the shadows opposite the Town Hall, Calle Portal de Molino. It’s difficult to imagine flocks of sheep and cattle being driven down it to market in the
Albarracín’s hanging houses
town square during Albarracín’s heyday, when cattle and wool exports during the 18th Century paid for the magnificent big rambling casas señoriales (noblemen’s homes) that date from this period. I walk up Calle Portal, and at the end of the street, where one of the original entrances to the town, the Portal de Molino, still stands, I turn around to look at probably the most emblematic building of Albarracín, la Casa de Julianetta, a tiny higgledy-piggledy house built into the junction of two streets, where there’s barely a straight line or sure angle. Other than that it was the home of Julianetta, a humble village lady who’s house was typical of Abarracín, there is no historic or cultural reference, but it is a wonderful bit of ‘eye candy’ for lovers of Medieval architecture. It seems strange to me that something smaller than many village churches I’ve seen in Spain should be exalted with the name ‘Cathedral’, but Alabrracín definitely has one, dating from the 16th Century. On closer inspection, it doesn’t live up to it’s grandiose title either, it’s most delightful artwork being the stunningly carved wooden alterpiece of San Pedro, removed from the Iglesia de Santa María, on the edge of the city, when it was deconsecrated and became an auditorium. One thing that did strike me about the Cathedral was that it has the only calvario I’ve ever seen inside a building. The calvario (the ‘stations of the cross’) are usually found, at least in Spain, forming a ziggurat footpath up a hill crowned by an ermita, with each of the fourteen stages marked by ceramic images in small niches. Here, they are illustrated by ancient oil paintings, cracked and faded with years of exposure, interspersed with seven images of Mary in the simple garb of a nun, each with an extra sword plunged into her breast, representing the Seven Sorrows, one for each of seven sorrowful episodes that occurred during her life. The castle stands on a rise behind the Cathedral, but the long crescent of the extant wall radiates from both sides of a tower, curving like protective arms. Which is exactly what they were intended to be. Whereas most walled cities used the walls to protect only the citizens and therefore concentrated on the urban structure, those of Albarracín were designed to safeguard livestock during times of siege and to provide ample grazing land. The apparently steep incline isn’t as difficult as it looks, as the path meanders up quite languidly. The first stop-off point is a short flight of steps up to the top of the right wing of the wall. As you take the last step onto a small landing, the wall offsets to the left – and vertigo kicks in! What appears to be a wall of modest height from below suddenly assumes frightening proportions from this angle. No handrail, no crenulations, no waist-high wall to stop the cumbersome of foot from tumbling earthward. Nothing! – just a rough-topped wall that swoops down to a corner tower before doing a sharp right to continue on its way, the fall of the land dropping to the river valley below. I would not have like to have been a guard on patrol at night in the depths of an icy winter, and these days to walk it is suitable only for those who find the white knuckle rides at Blackpool Pleasure Beach just a bit of a jolly! Vertigo and I are old companions so, having gingerly lain down to take a photo, I equally gingerly slithered back down the stairs, to

take the final climb up to the Torre Andador, the Walker’s Tower, presumably named for those poor souls who had to patrol the nervewracking perimeter. It was worth the climb. Ahead of me I looked down over Albarracín – its spaghetti alleyways, church towers and mottled crunched-up rooftops – over to the backdrop of the Sierra de Albarracín, where roam the herds that provide the village’s famous queso puro de oveja, pure sheep’s cheese. My eye followed the meandering River Guadalaviar, one of the richest trout rivers in Spain, and where the annual national trout fishing competition is held, past the circular turret at the end of the wall, and on through the orchards and cornfields, pockmarked with houses and small factories, as it wandered its way onward to Teruel and beyond. Recovering Nero files John Bevan via email asks: Hello Aunty. I wondered if you could help me with this one: In 2004 I backed up a considerable number of family photographs onto DVDs using NERO software. I have done away with NERO some time ago and now cannot recover these photographs. All the file names have a .jpg added and a file extension of NCO i.e. “Dsc_0006.jpg.NCO”. Could
her emails arrive in the inbox. Any idea as to why OE treats her emails in this way?
Aunty Says: Hello Ken. It sounds like OE has somehow decided this particular

JDC from La Marina asks: Dear Lady - I am 85 and possessed by a Toshiba 2GB laptop on dialup. I can send emails but would be so happy if I could attach a picture. Your wonderful articles I read avidly, but are far to advanced for me and time is rather short. Could you deign to help me with a detailed description? Aunty Says: Hello Don. I notice that you are using myway.com for your email provider which I’m not

you please advise any way of recovering these files? Aunty Says: I think you may get away with the 15 day trial version of Nero BackItUp & Burn program from the download page of nero. com. Once installed you should be able to right click on the files you want to restore and maybe copy them onto a USB stick or external hard drive.
Automatically deleted emails Ken from Gata asks: Hi Aunty, whenever one of my neighbours sends me an email OE (Outlook Express) puts it straight in the Deleted Items Box, however, if I open my emails via webmail with FasthostWebmail,

familiar with but attaching an image or document to an email is usually done by clicking on a button or link somewhere on the compose email page. You should then be presented with a browse facility that let’s you choose the folder on your computer where your pictures and documents live. This will normally be called something like ‘my documents’ or ‘pictures’ but you can direct the browse function to any folder or camera flash card using the drop down arrow.
Colin, Norman and Lynda say: Dear Aunty, regarding the letter from Alan of Benidorm in last weeks RTN, I think that you and your readers should know that Amazon will ship most of their products to overseas addresses. I use them regularly, mainly for books, but recently I ordered a USB flashdrive for my computer. It arrived at my Spanish address three days later! Just go to Amazon.co.uk; they provide a first class service.
sender’s email address is junk or spam and therefore automatically sends it to the trash folder. Go to ‘tools’ ‘message rules’ and look under the ‘blocked sender list’ and see if you can remove it from there.
Aunty Says: I’m not sure that everything can be shipped over here as cheaply and reliably though Colin. It’s also a good idea to use your credit card for payment as you are fully covered by insurance should the item get damaged or go astray.
Creating restore discs John from Alcalali asks: Hello Aunty, it’s me again! With reference to your recent advice regarding creating a set of restore discs for Windows: I have a Windows disc for my laptop but over the years I have downloaded numerous updates. If I had to reload the Windows disc I am guessing it would not relate very closely to the present state of my computer. Can I create a set of restore discs at this
stage and if so how would I go about it?
Aunty Says: You guess correctly John, and you are lucky to even have a Windows disc these days. This is the big problem with most recovery processes as they will take your computer back to its original state and almost certainly wipe all of your personal files (photos and documents etc.) plus all your additional programs will have to be reinstalled.
That’s all for this week, email me on auntyvirus@roundtownnews.com and I will do my best to sort you out
There is software available that will create an image or ‘ghost’ of your current setup that can be reinstalled via a special set of startup discs but the only one I have tested is Acronis True Image Home 2011 which is around €30. I am fairly lazy when it comes to backups but what I have generally done in the past is to keep an up to date copy of all my priceless personal stuff on a USB memory stick, and rely on an expert should Windows need reinstalling.

Basic business contracts are the Torrevieja basis of better business wisdom Computer Club BASIC BUSINESS wisdom suggests that no business arrangement should be entered into unless a signed contract is in place. You wouldn’t sell your car or hire a contractor to remodel your house without a contract in place, would you? The same goes for any business environment by where money and labour are involved. A basic work contract can help assure that you, your freelance workers and your clients are all on Information Technology & the same page and understand the nature and Communications ethics of the project and the work involved. A work contract clearly spells out payment terms, due dates, protection of company secrets and ethics, reasonable sickness leave, reasons for termination and allows for revisions and clauses that answer the numerous questions that arise during the course of the work term or project. In terms of legal protection, a work contract that is signed and dated will hold up in any course of law, hence keeping all parties within the contract on their best behaviour. Normally, better business wisdom dictates that a subject who wants work but will not sign a basic work contract is a liability risk. A basic contract conveys to your freelance contract workers and clients that you are a professional business person and that you take your work very seriously. From the perspective of the freelance worker, a contract protects one from surprise changes in the scope of the work involved in the project. And by way of the client, a contract protects one from paying for work that doesn’t meet the contractual requirements.
AFTER SOME most enjoyable meetings during the summer recess the Club will begin the autumn season on Wednesday 22nd September and will meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month until 8th December at the Rocajuna Bar / Restaurant, Urb. Los Barcos, Punta Prima, Torrevieja. Doors will open at 19:00 and activities continue until

By signing a basic work contract, it means that all parties are in agreement to act in good faith towards each other. A breach of contract is when one party does not do that agreed in the contract. The other party then has the right to go to court to ask the judge to compel or force that party to follow the terms of the contact. This is how a contract is enforceable. Oral contracts are much harder to enforce because there is no evidence, such as a written agreement, to show what the parties agreed to or what the consideration was. Utilising a good basic business contract helps all parties think out the bottom line and make decisions before the work has begun. It is a way to make certain that all parties maintain trust and confidence through mutual co operation. If you need a basic work contract to mimic – visit my site www.KarlaDarocas.com – You can copy and alter to suit your business circumstances.

Which Motorhome? MY HUSBAND and I are resident in Spain and want to buy a Motorhome. We were wondering if we would be better buying the Motorhome in Spain or the UK. Any advice would be appreciated.

Dear Mr & Mrs Brown, When buying any diesel engine vehicle now in Spain, it is important to buy as new a vehicle as possible due to the pending increasing taxes on the exhaust
library photo
pollution factors, in the UK as well. The newer specification is level 5, and vehicles over the last three years have been to level 4 with diesel particulate filters, etc. There are quite a few older autocaravans (and vans etc.) on sale now as the exhaust pollution for these vehicles is considered too high. Also do not consider buying one from the UK as the steering wheel is on the wrong side for safety in Spain and much of the Continent where the rules are that in all such vehicles it is important to have 360º vision from the driver’s seat. So a UK drive-type would not be able to be registered here for that reason alone, even if new; as many have discovered who have not read my books since 2004.
This includes pick-ups where there is a load area and although when new there is a 360º vision, the fact that a canopy can be installed over the load area later means that they also are not admitted for Spanish registration. Again, it is apparently not an arbitrary decision but because a significant number of accidents have occurred for this reason. So beware the bargains for old diesel auto caravans, vans and pickups especially for UK set-up ones, unless you are going to drive back to the UK for good and then the asking price may be knocked down. So you need to buy a recently manufactured van and with a continental set up. Also a point in passing: the authorities are now strict about camping vehicles not being allowed to park in normal car parks overnight. They must use the designated camping grounds that have hygienic facilities. I reported on this nearly a year ago. If you are not technically minded take an expert with you to view potential purchases Good luck with your purchase and do not forget to specify independent air conditioning for peaceful nights!
Spain promotes electric cars
SPAIN SAYS the future of cars is electric. The Minister of Industry, Tourism and Trade, Miguel Sebastián, officially opened a debate conference on the hybrid and electric vehicle market in Tokyo last Thursday. The forum highlighted the business and cooperation opportunities that exist in this new field for both Spanish and Japanese companies. The Minister for Industry, currently in Japan on the official visit being made by the Spanish government to Asia, previously took part in a meeting with Japanese companies alongside Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. In his speech, Miguel Sebastián highlighted the complementary nature of Japanese and Spanish companies in terms of their most influential foreign markets, and the advantages that could be obtained by both parties from commercial cooperation.

Sordo was subjected to “team orders”
THE OLDEST town in Germany, Trier, is the backdrop to the 2010 Rally Germany, where usually rally cars argue with the vines in an attempt to quicken the pace, and sometimes fall off the road! This exciting ‘all tarmac’ event is set in the beautiful wine growing region of Germany: Mosel. The rally consists of three different types of road, starting with narrow bumpy stages in the Mosel vineyards, switching to the faster roads of the Saarland region before heading to the awesome Baumholder stages, which is where the American Military test their tanks! From the outset there was no real opposition to Sebastián Loeb´s defence for the WRC Championship crown. Loeb´s form on Tarmac is, as always, unstoppable. Of the 19 stages of Rally Germany every one was won by Citroen and 9 were dominated by Loeb. Ford driver Latvala managed a reasonable 4 place overall, but M-Sport team manager Malcolm Wilson conceded that the Focus is lacking in pace and their drivers lack the consistency of Loeb. The first three stages were taken by ‘King Seb’ - stage four was Solberg’s. He did a fine job of taking only a few seconds from the Citroen ace.

10 - 16 SEPTEMBER 2010
Jarri Matti Latvala naturally feels at home on gravel and struggles to keep the momentum needed to throw his Focus around the tight and fast stages of Rally Germany. Tarmac testing goes on relentlessly around the M-Sport base in Cumbria and in France, to hone its drivers into the style of Leob´s animal like driving on tarmac: let’s see how they improve next year. Team orders applied on stage 11: Sordo, the nearest threat to Loeb´s lead, was dished out a bitter blow from the Citroen team. They wanted a one –two finish and instructed Sordo to back off and secure the team’s desire of collecting more points rather than having one or both cars going out of the rally. NEWS HOT OFF THE PRESS…Toyota, Mini, Volkswagen and SAAB are all wishing to return to rallying by 2013. Next year sees the implementation of new WRC rules and car control. The biggest changes are to engine sizes. Next year, all teams will have to run 1600cc turbocharged cars in an attempt to curb the costs involved in the sport. Most cars will use a set platform of parts ranging from turbos, engine parts, suspension and brakes. Watch out for the next Rally Review which is Rally Japan and may be followed on WWW.WRC.COM 10th 12th September.

Your UK TV questions answered part 2 WELCOME BACK to RTN’s series of monthly features about the world of British TV here on the northern Costa Blanca. Last month we answered some common questions, and this month we have more. Thank you all for your emails and calls, and I hope I’ve been able to help.

Q:
On occasion a message pops up on the screen saying that unless I press ‘BACKUP’ the digibox will go into Standby in ‘X’ minutes. This is annoying enough when watching but is exceptionally inconvenient when we are not at home, and we miss the end of a show being recorded because the box has switched off!
A:
I’m surprised that this is happening during the day, as it’s only supposed to occur at night. This is Sky’s energy-saving feature introduced a while ago via an automatic software update. It is supposed to switch your box into standby at night when you aren’t watching, to save on electricity and promote their ‘green’ values. However, many people have been confused and frustrated by this feature, and yet it’s very easy to disable. Press SERVICES on your Sky remote, go down to AUTO-STANDBY, press SELECT, and set it to OFF. Then save the new settings, and press BACKUP to return to normal viewing. ‘Et voila’, as the French say…
Q:
My Sky remote controls everything except the volume on my TV. Is there any way to set it up so that it does this too?
A:
All genuine Sky remotes are set by default to work with Sony TVs. They can often
be reprogrammed using a 4-digit code for your make of TV equipment; however older generations of handset and non-Sky versions WON’T support all the latest models of TV! http://www.thedigiboxshop.com/wherecan-I-find-sky-digibox-remote-control-codes. html will have many of the codes available online, listed alphabetically by manufacturer. To reset your remote control: Press TV at the top-left of the Sky remote. Next, press SELECT and RED together for two seconds, after which the remote’s LED light will flash twice to confirm. Press TV again. Next, enter your 4-digit code (for example, 0160 for Samsung). The remote will flash twice again to confirm. Press the POWER button (topright of the Sky remote). If the TV switches off, you have the correct code. If not, press TV again, and then POWER. As soon as the set switches off, you have the correct code. Press SELECT to confirm your new code and then press the big blue SKY button. You should now find that the volume control works! If you go through ALL the versions of a particular code (pressing TV, POWER, TV, POWER etc until you get an ‘end-of-the-line’ two-flash signal) and the set doesn’t switch off, you probably have an older remote control, or a non-Sky version, or a brand new TV, and it may not be possible to synchronise the two.
Q:
I have a DVD recorder with FreeView built in so I need to install a digital aerial… the only problem I have is which direction and elevation to point it? Could you please give me any advice on what to do?
A:
The easiest and cheapest way to align an aerial is to cheat! Once up on the roof, have a look at neighbouring properties and where their aerials point. Then point yours in the same direction, secure it, and test! If you use a decent quality digital TDT aerial, the exact direction is not critical. You should find you receive 40-70 channel slots, many filled with live channels. Alternatively, get a local expert to fit it and tune it for you professionally for guaranteed decent installation and lasting reception! Next month: yet more of your emails, comments and questions answered. Got a question that nobody can give you a straight answer on? Something useful to shout about? Share it with us. Until then, stay happy and safe!

The final whistle Hard-earned but well deserved point
Ferrari farce
Felipe Massa & Fernando Alonso
ASK ANYONE of the teams in the Formula One championship if they’d be happy to spend £65,000 extra per race to guarantee victory and they’d snap your hand off. And, as predicted in this column, that is exactly what has happened following the FIA’s decision not to punish Ferrari further for their blatant manipulation of the German Grand Prix. Despite trampling all over rule 39.1 which states “team orders which interfere with a race result are prohibited”, the FIA, well rumoured to always favour the Italian team, effectively let them get away with it with a slap on the wrist. How pathetic. It matters not a jot that many at the sports governing body aren’t in favour of the rule and nor does it matter that most of the teams don’t like it either and are always trying to find ways round it. The fact is Ferrari were caught bang to rights. They should have been docked points or suspended. A little dent in the vast expanse of the Ferrari wallet will achieve nothing. The sport is tarnished and I for one won’t bother to watch for the rest of the season. MISSING JT? I realise that we shouldn’t get too excited about England’s two post World Cup competitive performances but Fabio Capello has obviously leant a few things from the disastrous time in South Africa. And, as he’s on about £5million a year, so he should. Looking on from a far, the one conclusion I’ve come up with is that England looks a far happier and settled side without John Terry in it. As for Steven Gerrard, he’s grown in to the captaincy and after his efforts against Bulgaria and Switzerland in central midfield, he’s surely settled the argument once and for all regarding in which position he should play. SAY SORRY DAVID In the ring, David Haye is a man I admire. He travelled abroad and cut down the skyscraper on legs, Nikolai Valuev, and then he stopped the brave John Ruiz for only the second time 54 fights. He’s a champion that Britain can be proud of. That is, up to a point. Leading up to fights, Haye often goes too far with the trash talk and ahead of the showdown with Audley Harrison, he’s done it again, suggesting that the contest will be “as one sided as a gang rape.” There are, of course, tickets to sell and TV viewers to tempt but there is no place for language such as this. Haye should apologise immediately and donate some of his purse to a few charities that spend their days dealing with this sickening crime. BOLARINWA AT THE DOUBLE Here’s a name to watch out for – David Bolarinwa. I was lucky enough to be working at the UK School Games in Newcastle last weekend and was commentating when the 16 year old from SE London successfully defended his 100m title. Having already recorded time of 10.39 seconds this season, it’s clear he’s a real talent and if guided properly by his coaches and UKA, stands a genuine stage amongst the seniors on the world stage in a few years time. Remember, you heard his name here first.
FC TORREVIEJA returned from La Nucia with a hard-earned but well deserved point from a tight match in which chances were at a premium. The game ended 1-1. Following their opening day home win against Levante ‘B’, Torre were forced into changes, most notably in defence with young right back Vicente Boix replacing the suspended Jorge and Abel moved to centre back to deputise for the injured Keko. These changes were hardly noticed as the home side, who had enjoyed a win at Torrellano in their opening match, failed to make any impact on the well marshalled back line, with keeper Tomas a virtual spectator throughout the ninety minutes. Abel and Meijide coped efficiently with the threat posed by the big local centre forward, Mesa, and the hardworking midfield snuffed out most home attacks before any danger could develop. DELIGHTED In a first half almost devoid of goal scoring opportunities, it was Javi Orta who went closest to scoring, fizzing a fierce shot from 25 metres just wide of the upright. The second period began with La Nucia showing renewed vigour, but their attempts to break through the determined Torre rear guard soon fizzled out and as the match wore on it was the visitors who looked most likely to grab a winner.
The Torry players
Later on, Torre substitute Saul was able to find space to threaten the goal with long-range efforts, but pulled both shots wide of the goal. And in injury time, La Nucia had the chance to find a winner they hadn’t merited when they were awarded two free kicks in dangerous positions but on both occasions the Torre wall did its job. Torre will be pleased to have taken a point from a trip to difficult opponents and Manager Mario Barrera will have been delighted with the team’s effort and concentration, which prevented La Nucia from creating any clear chances.
And the good guys lost FC Cartagena 0 Elche CF 1 By Steve Hibberd WITH THE clock showing 89 minutes 57 seconds, Wakaso broke clear on the left wing, before pulling the ball back from the dead ball line to Linares, who had the simple task of side footing the ball home to give Elche an undeserved victory. For the second year running, Elche came to Cartagonova Stadium content to gain a point, but unfortunately (for football) left with all 3. Their spoiling tactics won them few friends amongst the 8,500 crowd, although as they headed back home up the AP7, this was the probably the furthest from their minds. Elche, who have mastered the art of cheating, seemingly having invented the word ‘snide’, were highly delighted with arbitro Perez Montero and his Andalusian assistants, who appeared either oblivious or reluctant to punish football’s bad boys. Had Montero dealt correctly with the highly annoying Wakaso (think Cardiff’s Bellamy and you get the picture!) who committed enough offences to have seen red many times over, then his well delivered cross would not have taken place. The first half was a very scrappy affair, as Elche broke up any inventive Cartagena moves in typical Elche style. On 13 minutes an inch perfect cross was met by the head of Toche, but lacked any real power and never re-
ally threatened keeper Willy. A comical mix up involving Cartagena keeper Rebello punching the ball onto the back of his player was eventually cleared following a mad scramble. Loud shouts for a penalty went on deaf ears when after an off the ball incident, two Cartagena players lay flat out inside the area. Although I confess that I did not see what happened, players reactions did indicate that Elche’s homework had paid off. Unbelievably, the first incident of note in the second half involved another off the ball incident inside Elche’s penalty area, and once again neither the ref nor his assistant spotted the offence (how convenient). Keeper Willy was keeping Elche in the game, again showing his alertness when he superbly took the ball of Victor’s head to prevent a certain goal. Sub Goiria shot just over the Elche bar on 41 minutes, but as time ticked away you somehow knew that a breakaway goal was just around the corner. The only consolation for Cartagena fans is that they have to put up with Elche’s negative tactics only once more this season. FC CARTAGENA LINE-UP Rebollo, Cygan, Txiki, Mariano, Botelho,Toche, Longas, Lafuente, Moral (Keko), Victor (Goiria), Exposito
Although Torre would have preferred to have carved out more opportunities during the game, they are certainly looking a compact and capable unit as a second consecutive clean sheet shows. This Sunday, FC Torrevieja is at home to Novelda. Kick off is at 17.00 and RTN will be there to cheer the boys on. With tickets priced at just €5 for ladies and OAPS, and €10 for men, it’s a great evening out for all the family. Kids under 16 are free. Please go along and support FC Torrevieja! www.fctorryfans.net in associationwith www.bluelagooncasas.com
Capello to quit in 2012 ENGLAND MANAGER Fabio Capello has confirmed that he will step down from his role after the 2012 European Championships. After a disappointing World Cup that provoked intense criticism of Capello, England are joint top of qualifying Group G after two Euro 2012 wins. It was announced yesterday that after the tournament is finished Capello will then step down from his 6 million pound a year role and enjoy his retirement. Media speculation has already stated that Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce would be the perfect replacement for Fabio, also Spurs boss Harry Redknapp, Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson & fans favourite David Beckham will almost certainly be in the frame.

Who are you calling slow? Noel’s world of golf By Noel Eastwell Professional coach and RTN golf expert 639 730 891
ONE OF the things that spoil golfers’ games more than any other is slow play. Many people are accused of it yet all deny being slow and have an excuse or simply blame others. A typical round of golf here in Spain takes a ridiculous 5 hours at times, and it can seem as if you have been on the course all day - well you have been there for nearly a quarter of a day! Just why this happens is a mystery to many but it really should not. If you are like me, you want to enjoy your golf and take in the amazing scenery around most of our golf courses. You certainly don’t want to be running around the course but you don’t want to be out there for 5 hours either. So is the answer to this problem the length or our golf courses or just that many people are not ready to play when their turn arrives? Like me, many golfers will see fellow players not ready to play when it’s their turn, they have to find a tee, a ball, their glove; they are looking at what’s going on with the group behind; or simply
daydreaming. These excuses are poor and really should not happen if we are concentrating on our games. Yes, at times when players share a buggy they will take time to get from one ball to the next but that should really only be seconds. A lot of time can be saved if we are ready to play when it’s our turn but what about playing a provisional ball? How many times have we seen a player hit a ball that has more than a good chance of being lost but for some reason fails to play a provisional and goes for a fruitless look and then has to return to the tee to reload? Think how much time can be saved if we encourage that sort of behaviour. I am not one for rushing around and getting into the clubhouse in record time but many people’s golf is spoilt because we don’t give enough consideration to how we are playing the game. A little thought and a little concentration would go a long way to making many golfers days out much more enjoyable: let’s face it it’s not cheap any more and we all
want to enjoy the game when we do play. Then we would not have to blame each other for our own failings.
THE PROFESSIONAL TOURS We are heading towards the end of the season for The European Tour and many players will be getting jittery over the playing privileges for 2011. The next few weeks will be very interesting indeed. Those at the top of the table have other concerns: will they do well enough to get into The Dubai World Championship and all the riches that go with that? Keep watching - there will be heartbreak and even tears along the way. WIN A ROUND OF GOLF FOR 2 INCLUDING BUGGY AT THE BEAUTIFUL EL PLANTIO RESORT IN ALICANTE To enter this competition, simply answer the question below correctly. Every correct answer will be entered into a draw at the end of the month and the winner of this
fantastic prize worth over €180 will be picked at random at the end of each month. Send your entries by email to golf@roundtownnews.com. The decision of the editor of RTN will be final in making the winning selection. QUESTION FOR 10TH SEPTEMBER 2010: WHO WON THIS YEARS JOHNNIE WALKER CLASSIC AT GLENEAGLES? A. Eduardo Molinaro B. Francesco Molinaro C. Mateo Monaserro All answers must be received no later than 17.00 on 30th September 2010 to be entered into September’s draw, to be made on 1st October 2010. The winner will be announced in RTN on 8th October 2010. A great day and a great venue WHAT A great day and what a great venue! The RTN Golf Club Members Monthly Competitions got off to a flying start at Font del Llop course near Aspe, last Friday as an enthusiastic crowd of golfers launched our very first competition. Having enjoyed the warmest of welcomes from staff that are keen for players to feel welcome and enjoy their day on the golf course, many set off for the range to prepare for what was ahead. As the large group of players gathered around for the first player to tee off, the excitement grew and it was with much relief that the first group set off to test their skills on what is a superb golf course. The team at Font Del Llop prepared their course to present a challenge to our players and with the course in such good condition, scoring was never going to be easy. With refreshments supplied by RTN safely tucked away for consumption later in the day, the first tee shot was hit by Aaron Woodhams and that set the standard for the day as his ball flew straight down the middle of the fairway.
The first team go off with their RTN goody bags
TOP SPOT RTN’s own Golf Professional, Noel Eastwell, was on hand to offer encouragement to all players and toured the course throughout the day keeping a keen eye on the proceedings. The first nine holes of competition sailed by with RTN’s very own Eric Taylor in the lead with 21 Stableford points, Charlie Little on 20 points and three other
players all on 19 points each including Natasha Woodhams. As they entered the back nine, all was still up for grabs and it was likely that it would be a very close competition. In the end this proved to be the case as RTN/Bay Radio Scholarship winner Charlie Little led the field home. His second nine holes of 19 points saw him take top spot from Kieran McLaughlin on 37 points and Eric Taylor on
36 points. The day closed with the presentation ceremony in the clubhouse where the top three players were presented with superb trophies supplied by Font del Llop. NUMBER ONE GOLF CLUB The next adventure in The RTN Golf Club Members Competitions will see a visit to El Plantio on 4th October for another Indi-
vidual Stableford Competition. This is another fantastic venue and a great day out for the Costa Blanca’s Number One Golf Club. To enter, all you have to do is send your details including ‘Federacion’ Licence Number to elplantiogolf@elplantio. com If you are not a member of the ‘Federacion’ just send your details including your lowest handicap. Players can request a tee time if they wish to start late or early.
