Television screens and newspaper pictures will focus on the story of a monarch who was crowned in 1952 and has continued to delight and enchant her subjects through a number of milestones and now reaches its zenith with her Diamond Jubilee. The crowning glory of year long international celebrations is the four day long ‘Jubilee Weekend’ – a double bank holiday in the UK – when the country will turn a patriotic red, white and blue. In Spain, patriotic expats will be hanging out the bunting for parties and raising a toast to Her Majesty. Next week RTN plans a spread of photos of events throughout the region to mark the occasion, why not help us create something special by sending your pictures to rtnmail@roundtownnews.com.

TROUBLED ALICANTE bank CAM was accused of corruption and fraud during a Spanish court drama involving 1.5 million euros in house deposits it was trusted to safeguard.

It is alleged the bank – Caja de Ahorros del Mediterraneo – failed to comply with Spanish law and issue bank guarantees to people, many of them Brits and retired, buying into a luxury lifestyle development.

Judge Consuelo Romero is expected to deliver a verdict in the coming days, a result eagerly anticipated by victims of other ‘off plan’ homes in the Costa Blanca and across Spain who have lost money because of failures of banks to guarantee funds.

Described by the Spanish press as the “trial of the year” in Hellin, Albacete, the action was brought against CAM and developer Cleyton GES by the Finca Parks Action Group.

The law states deposits must be held in ‘special accounts’ and the money only used for the purpose of building houses – in this case 600 homes in ‘real Spain’, a lifestyle and sports resort at Las Higuericas Finca Parks, a village near Hellin.

Around 70 homes were completed – but have never been occupied – but the action group maintains around 100 purchasers were issued any guarantee, although another 300 people were granted the protection, after paying their deposits between 2004 and 2006.

The case is about recovering the funds from the bank. Construction ended in 2009 when the developer pulled out saying the resort, funded by the bank, was financially unviable.

CONTRACT During the two-day hearing, CAM lawyers argued the bank had no contractual relationship with the purchasers and it was the developer who had mishandled money from the special account.

However, the action group’s legal team said the victims had been “harmed” by the failures of both the bank and Cleyton GES and as the only financial entity involved, CAM “should be condemned” jointly and separately with the developer.

DEBT-RIDDEN CALPE has drawn up a “realistic” 28 million euro budget for 2012 – the first spending plan the town hall has agreed in four years.

Mayor Cesar Sanchez told residents when he took office in May 2011; the town was 60 million euros in the red after years of spending with no regard of income.

Speaking at a first public meeting with English-speaking residents, he said painful cuts had been made but the new budget was “a sum of money which is realistic, truthful and just.”

He told the meeting at the Diamante Beach Hotel: “It is no secret, the situation we found a year ago when we took office was a situation where the town hall owed 60 million euros and a situation where the accounts bore no resemblance to what was happening.”

He said between 2007 and last year Calpe had failed to comply with the law and present a budget – instead it had continued to spend on the basis of the last agreed figures – 40 million euros in 2006.

“They operated on the basis of spending this figure although income was going down – in 2011 it was 27 million euros against that level of spending, which explains the debt sit-

uation,” said the Mayor. “The municipality had spent what it did not have and now it has to be paid for.”

AUDIT And Mr Sanchez said the council planned an audit of spending, misspending and wastage to discover where the money had gone over the four years.

He admitted spending had to be slashed, “but we have to make them because we cannot go on spending money we do not have.”

Card sharks caught

BIG SPENDING gangsters enjoying the illicit profits of a credit card cloning scam were caught out because of their taste for the high life. Suspicions were aroused as the gang of four Italians used the fake plastic in Denia and this week National Police raided an apartment in the Marina Alta capital to arrest the men aged between 21 and 31.

Officers also seized computer equipment, a printing press, 162 plastic cards with magnetic strips waiting to be encoded, fake identity cards and counterfeit credit cards. Police say the flat was the centre of the illicit operation and cards were faked using data stolen from genuine cards being used at cash points and in restaurants.

Mr Sanchez said the budget made a reduction of 40% of overall costs – while the spending of the mayor’s office had been reduced by 82%. In 2007, the office spent 187,000€, in 2012 it would be 38,000€.

“It has been a very complicated budget. I am a politician and politicians love to spend money but there is no money to spend, but you have to be realistic.”

He said the debt had to be managed and, importantly, not increased. “We have a balanced budget to the extent any budget can be balanced. One has to make assumptions but I feel it is realistic, there could be small surpluses or deficits, and the prime objective is to insure there is no increase in the burden of debt.”

Javea crime rate falls

INFORMATION RELEASED by Public Safety Councilman John Ortolá this week shows that Javea is now one of the safest towns in the Alicante province with fines falling by 55% in the last year. Javea’s police force employs 92 agents and its fleet of vehicles was recently expanded with the addition of two new vans and two motorcycles covering an area of 68sq km. Last year each police car covered around 100,000km.

SUPPORTING STRANDED tourists was a key area where the British Consulate team in Alicante and holiday companies can work together on the Costa Blanca, a Benidorm meeting was told.

Consul Paul Rodwell met with around 40 reps in Benidorm last week to discuss how to help the 3.5 million holidaymakers arriving on the coast each year.

The representatives of Thomas Cook, TUI UK and Ireland, Jet2holidays.com, SAGA and Med Hotels, were given an explanation of how one of the busiest consulates in the world could help when things went wrong.

And Mr Rodwell appealed for the companies to keep tourists informed of what the consulate team could do to help and to insure the Alicante Consulate was told when any emergency arose.

Last year the consulate issued 1,250 emergency passports after travel documents were either lost or stolen and the reps were shown new information videos urging people to take care of them with the message: “Lose your passport, lose your holiday”.

And with the emergency travel paper costing 122€, Mr Rodwell said it was important passports were kept safe.

He accepted it was ‘independent’ travellers who perhaps did not have emergency cash with them and were the most likely not to have adequate travel insurance.

SAFE “We want Brits to get home as safely and as quickly as possible following an emergency,” said Mr Rodwell. “You do a good job as well – it is the whole advantage of taking the whole package.”

However, he appealed for reps to inform the consulate of any deaths in suspicious circumstances. “We haven’t had the ‘balconing’ sensation here – if you jump from a building in Benidorm, the chance of surviving is pretty remote given the height of the buildings.”

Mr Rodwell asked for reps to contact his team about vulnerable people who might wander off to “aimlessly” walk the streets or go missing. “Another tour operator could have reported them missing from another hotel.”

And he said the consulate could help the victims of serious crimes such as assault or rape. “Rape is very important; the way the victim is treated in the first couple of hours can affect how they survive a horrific experience.”

The consul underlined that Benidorm was a well managed report and although there were concerns about street crime and prostitution he said given the size and volume of the tourist population it was a small problem.

Mr Rodwell said reps could access the constantly updated ‘ukinspain’ website and pass on safety tips to visitors, especially the “Know Before You Go” initiative.

Gibraltar and Britain to find a solution

FOLLOWING A meeting between Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo y Marfil and his British counterpart William Hague on Tuesday, both the Spanish and British governments are resolved to finding a workable solution to the fishing dispute that continues to boil in the waters off the Gibraltar coast. After a two hour meeting Hague and Margallo confirmed that both the UK and Spain want to diffuse the tension at sea. Hague said, “Clearly our views on this differ but we both recognise the importance of establishing a dialogue between all parties.”

Pharmacists still waiting for their money PHARMACISTS IN the province of Alicante held a meeting at 8.30pm on Thursday to discuss what measures may be taken against the continuing defaults of the Generalitat Valenciana, with “…strong measures not ruled out.” The President of the College of Pharmacists of Alicante, Jaime Carbonell, confirmed that an undertaking has been received from the Minister for Health, Luis Rosado, that next Monday a monthly fee

will be paid. The Consell owes collective pharmacists in Valencia €460 million for prescriptions dispensed since last January, of which 160 million correspond to pharmacies within the Alicante province. Consell Vice President José Císcar admitted on Wednesday that the Government continues to experience “very significant liquidity problems,” and is having a hard time “making ends meet as would any family.”

“The problem we have and the nightmare it has turned into have nothing to do with the people of Hellin but everything to do with CAM and the developer,” he said.

Keith said the Governor of the Bank of Spain had already described CAM as the “worst of the worst” and added: “We are the victims of corruption within CAM and we have a very strong case.

He said victims, who had seen “ a dream turn into a nightmare”, had only paid money to CAM. “Money that under Spanish law could only be spent building houses yet there is proof money was used to buy cars and pay company bills and wages.”

And he said the bank had been negligent and failed to show due diligence and failed to monitor the actions of the client, the developer.

“This is why we believe CAM should be made to repay money in full with interest and our legal costs,” said Keith. “We are the innocent victims of this corruption.”

No compensation for being gored A SUPREME court judge has rejected the compensation case of a woman who was gored while attending a bullfight in Ondara at Sant Jaume in July 2007 when a bull jumped over the barrier. The woman had applied for compensation of 32,000€ after she suffered a significant injury to her thigh. The court found that the woman had chosen to view the bullfight from an aisle rather than the stand and therefore took an unnecessary risk of mishap.

London gets ready to party by louise clarke FOR THE first time this summer, all the eyes of the world will be focussed on London; on this occasion, it will be for HRH Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. For months the UK’s capital city has been preparing to celebrate 60 years of the Queen’s reign and last week RTN was in London to see what preparations have been made for the big event.

With Union Jack’s adorning almost every street and a deep feeling of patriotism and excitement amongst every Londoner, RTN was quite envious that it wasn’t going to be there to join in the celebrations.

SHARING For those of you who would like to know exactly what is going on this weekend, RTN contacted the press office from the Mayoral Office in the City of London and they gave us some of the highlights. The majority of the events will be filmed on ITV, BBC or SKY, so if you have access to UK TV you will be able to witness some of the celebrations.

RTN watched the circular stage being built and it is huge! This stage will play host to an array of famous artists all performing in what is going to be one of the most spectacular shows ever staged.

The BBC and Gary Barlow have brought together some of the biggest names from the worlds of music, dance and musical theatre to perform, including Shirley Bassey, Jools

Holland, Jessie J, JLS, Elton John, Tom Jones, Annie Lennox, Madness, Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue, Cliff Richard, Ed Sheeran and Stevie Wonder. Finally, on Tuesday 5th June, there will be a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral and a formal carriage Procession by The Queen.

by jack troughton WORLD FAMOUS Benidorm Palace has been voted the best cabaret theatre nightclub in Europe as the popular nightspot prepares to celebrate its 35th anniversary and launch the new 2012 show.

The family-run business outstripped the famous Moulin Rouge in Paris to receive the honour – the owners saying; “We are absolutely over the moon!”

And as well as the regular dinner and show, the Benidorm Palace has also hosted Julio Inglesias, Sacha Distel, Matt Monroe, Joe Longthorne and Danny La Rue. In recent times the 1,600 seat theatre and the largest hydraulic stage in Europe have regularly been featured in the hit TV comedy Benidorm – even the Palace kitchens and an outside rubbish bin have had minor roles.

Christine Climent, who runs the venue with husband Vincente, son David and daughter Joanne, told RTN: “We are absolutely thrilled, totally flabbergasted and couldn’t believe it – a ‘phone call came completely out of the blue and

it is not just best in Spain but best in Europe.

“We didn’t have any idea we were being considered for an award, it is absolutely fantastic.”

BOOM Christine, a former nursery nurse from Widnes, first came to Benidorm on a week’s holiday - “I’m still here so it’s been a long week!” – and with her husband opened a souvenir shop at the start of the seventies’ tourist boom.

When Benidorm Palace came on the market she said it was “literally on its knees” and they took over in 1990.

“We knew nothing about show business but learned very quickly and learned from our mistakes, in fact we vowed never to make the same mistake twice..and we didn’t,” she said.

“And it is still fun, the thing about show business is you either love it or hate it. It‘s very demanding, live shows are demanding and we are live every night.”

THE ROYAL British Legion Calpe Branch is to hold its Queen’s Jubilee Summer Fete on Saturday 9th June at the Chez Flo Bar and Restaurant, Fustera Beach.

Festivities will begin at 3pm and continue until 5pm, opened by Carol Saunders of Calpe Council. The many attractions will include a selection of stalls and games along with a Grand Prize Draw offering superb prizes. There will also be a 3L Vodka Raffle and a 40 Bottle Stall Draw, with hot and cold refreshments available. The Friss Kids Brass Band from Holland will be playing two sessions during the afternoon, an ensemble consisting of nine young musicians.

There is a new show at Benidorm Palace every year, it takes 12 months of planning and up to 10 weeks rehearsal – Christine thanking choreographer David Moore for his dedication in achieving the spectacular routines on stage.

She said everything was done ‘in-house’ from the costume and wardrobe departments to the catering.

“We like Benidorm Palace to be a bit of a fantasy, people can leave their problems at the door and come in and forget them for a few hours entertainment,” said Christine.

“I think the heart of the success was including dinner so that everything is here under one roof.”

Xàbia to remove power lines THE UGLY power lines that have disfigured the skyline of Javea’s historic Old Town for so many years are finally to be removed. To improve quality and service, electricity company Iberdrola is to remove 40 low voltage lines comprising 1,500 metres supported on roof terraces and poles, relocating them underground with 16 lines at a length of 3,000 metres during the coming weeks.

Iberdrola has confirmed that local electricians will be contracted for the work.

Where have the bankers/politicians put their huge ‘pay-offs?’

THOUSANDS of ex-pats (yes, thousands) who moved to Spain for retirement (early retirement) to peter out the latter part of their lives are rueing their decision.

Having found a place in the sun - and a cheaper lifestyle - (expenditure-wise) the time-Bomb that exploded since the ‘Crisis’ hit continues with Tsunami-force.

Politicians and Bankers have been hand-in-hand, the stem of the downfall of Spain’s credibility (as reported in last week’s RTN).

Reports of corruption have been widespread in recent years in the Town Halls within the corridors of Spain’s leaders (Mayors) along with solicitors; construction companies; estate agents; town halls - the very people that we (ex-pats) and indeed Spanish and other foreigners trusted - trust that has now bore the fruit of a disaster of which Spain (as a country) its people, including of course ex-pats, have taken the brunt.

I know of a Spanish family that are ‘on the brink’- as are thousands of others.

The crash of the Euro; catastrophic increases in petrol/ diesel (remember the days of cheap fuel in Spain?); big increases in Iberdrola/food, et al… Four, five years since the ‘crisis’ begun, and the fall-out (it appears) is set to go deeper.

Will Spain remain in the Euro? Greece too? I read that if Greece was to come out of the Euro, the Euro currency in that country would decease 40% in value. Whether that is true, who knows? But all the same, a frightening thought.

And if it does occur, will Spain also join in the collapse of

the Euro? If that was to happen, it beggars belief as to what ex-pats and everyone living in Spain can look forward to.

Worrying times? Yes, for ex-pats, Spanish, German, Dutch... But not the bankers and politicians! The article in last week’s RTN - following the National TV coverage highlighting the Bankers and Politicians pay-offs - makes worrying reading/viewing.

For they (especially bankers) are laughing all the way to the bank! For those out of the bankers/politicians bracket in Spain, be worried - very worried. Because the ‘Crisis’ isn’t going to go away: it is here for the long haul.

Goalposts have been moved, and continue to be moved, with the latest being Residentia changes; and health changes – another boot up the backside for ex-pats, expats caught in a spider’s web: a web of deceit.

Thousands of ex-pats have had to leave Spain: no jobs, no money, no future, with casas’ values decreased by up to 50%. And the Sun will go down on many, many, more expats in the months/years that lie ahead - for the final time, I’d bank on that!

And the politicians and Bankers? They will be busy counting their money.

A question: where have the said bankers/politicians - who got the huge pay-outs as reported in the RTN - put their money?

Then again, if we ever got an answer to that question, would we get an honest answer?

Please help us I would like to make an appeal on behalf of the charity EMAUS, who support, amongst others, a children’s home in Elche. This home has 28 children aged between 6 and 18, who reside there on a permanent basis. There are many reasons why they are there but the authorities have decided that the parents cannot be trusted to look after the children. It is NOT the fault of the child. Extended families have also declined to assist in their welfare.

We are starting a new music class at the home. I visit on a weekly basis and give the children lessons on playing the guitar, drums, and other percussive instruments. There are some talented kids there and they just need a chance. We might find the next Hendrix, Clapton, or One Direction!

At this moment they have one keyboard and a very small guitar. Our appeal goes out to anyone who has ANY musical instruments, regardless of condition, which they would wish to donate to this cause. We are not asking for Fenders, Gibsons or KORG’s. If you have an instrument that you have not played and are not likely to play or anything percussive or just ANYTHING, we will be interested, and we will collect.

I AM sick to death of hearing how bankers are to blame for all our ills: how about the mayors; building constructers; corrupt Spanish solicitors; Members of Parliament and many others who have squandered billions of Euros on unnecessary street repairs; town Squares; street lighting; motorways; fountains; palm trees; cycle paths; statues… you only have to look at how much money Denia, El Verger, Els Poblets, Ondara and many other local authorities have spent without any thought of financial recourse or responsibility aided and abetted by The Spanish Government who have treated the European Parliament as a bottomless pit!

Barbecue safety reminder

Children with singed fingers, blistered faces and some incidents with fire accelerators have resulted in dozens of visits to emergency rooms as the warm weather brings out the flame-grilled sausages and burgers. And in the UK heat wave 32-year-old engineer John Woof was engulfed in an 8ft fireball this week when he doused his lit barbecue with petrol from his lawnmower: he is recovering in Royal Preston Hospital.

SAFETY Ensure the barbecue is on a flat site and well away from trees or shrubs. Keep children, garden games and pets well away and never leave the barbecue unattended.

emergencies. Use only enough charcoal to cover the base to a depth of about 50mm (2 inches). Only use recognised fire lighters or starter fuel and only on cold coals – use the minimum necessary and never use petrol. Ensure the barbecue is cool before attempting to move it.

Never put hot ashes straight into a dustbin or wheelie bin – they could melt the plastic and cause a fire.

For gas barbecues make sure the tap is turned off before changing the gas cylinder.

Change cylinders outdoors if possible or in a well-ventilated area. If you suspect a leak to the cylinder or pipe work, brush soapy water around the joints and watch for bubbles – tighten to fix but do not over-tighten.

After cooking, turn off the gas cylinder before turning off at the controls to ensure any residual gas in the pipe work is used up.

Doctor ordered to maintain child who survived bungled abortion A DOCTOR in Majorca, as yet unnamed, who bungled a patient’s pregnancy termination resulting in the baby surviving, has been ordered by judge Jose Perez Martinez to pay 270,000€ to the mother in damages to be spread over monthly payments of 974€ per month to maintain the child until reaches his 26th birthday. The woman checked in for an abortion in April last year at eight weeks pregnant and returned three months later for another (thinking she was again pregnant). When tests revealed the gynaecologist had misread an ultrasound and the unborn baby thought to have been aborted was still alive, the clinic offered to repay the 400€ cost of the termination and referred her to another centre in Barcelona, which refused her a termination as she was past the legal time limit. Critics have described the ruling as “bizarre” and expect an appeal to be filed.

Mexican Singer and Songwriter Waleska invited to Costa Blanca Fashion Week 2012 RTN: HELLO Waleska: How long have you been in Spain and what drove you to develop your career here?

WALESKA: I came to Spain about eight years ago, living happily in Barcelona, a multi-cultural city that prompted me to build my career here. I acted on stage for national television and performed in several local productions, in radio and at renowned music festivals in Spain, most importantly with my own compositions.

RTN: We know you’ve won several awards in your own country and took an important part in the Benidorm Festival 2004. Tell us a little about your career and what you have done in Mexico and Spain.

WALESKA: I was sincerely delighted to receive the national award for the arts in Mexico in 1997, a special award for camera and radio broadcasters, from the UN Ambassador in Mexico. Also the national competition in Mexico’s ‘Your Song’; second in ‘The Herald’s Voice’ and Speech Champion four times nationally. I was presented with a special award for my contribution to the speech debate ‘Mexico Rejects Violence’ by President Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de Leon.

In Spain I sang in the 2005 ARC awards and reached the semifinals of the 2004 Benidorm Festival. I am very satisfied with my achievements and work hard for the public that supports me, producing four plays and making two professional films in Spain as well as taking part in several national television events. My YouTube performances enjoy nearly 12,000 daily visitors.

RTN: What are your plans for 2012?

WALESKA: Finishing the album is top priority to hit the market in Europe, Latin America and the US. It is a Disco Dance Pop album with some Pop Rock and ballads, entitled ‘Fate’, produced by Angel Gascon, my manager and executive producer, with AG Sun Music.

One of my principal dancers is international model, actor and broadcaster Sukier Vallejo, also the director of the Costa Blanca Fashion Week - a privilege to have the cooperation of this great professional and friend.

Another of my goals is to make an English album. Curiously the US is one of my biggest followers on YouTube along with Germany and the UK. I am really happy my Spanish songs are so well received by English speaking nations. Mostly I want people to enjoy my music.

RTN: What is your ambition?

WALESKA: I want to show a different side to disco. I’m a fan of the Golden Age of Disco and the great Donna Summer, who recently left us but will always be the queen of the dance floor. I would like to continue along this line…fun, sensual and provocative but tasteful.

By Jan Gamm IN SPAIN getting hitched has always been a big deal with families making a huge splash on their daughters’ big day. No expense is spared traditionally with lavish arrangements made for the ceremony, the dress, the reception and a costly honeymoon for the happy couple.

FUCI (The Federation of Independent Users and Consumers) now estimates that the cost of a Spanish wedding varies between 7,580€ and 18,000€ - an average of 13,190€ representing a drop of 8.3% compared to last year, steadily falling over the last five years.

Stringent cuts are being made across the bridal budget with the biggest costs being saved on the reception and honeymoon according to the latest figures.

Spanish brides are spending a reasonable average on their bridal gowns but not less than 500€. To this must be added the cost of shoes, accessories, makeup and hairdressing, increasing the average spend to an average of 1,500€: grooms are spending between 310€ and 750€, while flowers account for around 1,200€.

Predictably Madrid is the most expensive location for weddings with an average cost of 16,000€ followed by Catalonia at 15,900€ and Valencia 15,500€. At the other end of the scale is Extremadura and the Canaries where the average cost of tying the knot is 10,600€ and 10,500€ respectively.

DELIGHTED CRUISE winners Eddie and Mary Wood are queuing up to be press-ganged back on ship after enjoying a luxurious eight day trip around the Med. The couple, from Alcalali, won holiday on MSC Orchestra in a prize draw after signing up for a RTN Network ADSL package and took to the high seas earlier this month.

And after being pampered throughout the journey on the 92,000 tonne ship by a crew of 987, Eddie and Mary are more than ready to get cruising again.

“Tell them we are ready to test another cruise, possibly on another route,” Eddie joked. “We certainly would like to express a wish to win the next competition or perhaps we could get the Orchestra and RTN together and do our own write ups.”

Mary interjected: “We are very, very grateful to RTN Network, RTN, and Gandia Tours for the wonderful holiday.”

She said the food, service and entertainment was “brilliant” and added: “The trouble is Eddie got too used to it!”

RELAX They had been on a cruise before – but some 30 years ago in the Gulf of Mexico – and found life on board was now more relaxed, although there were still a couple of more formal nights.

“I was slightly worried because I am not a good sailor,” said Mary. “However, at times I didn’t know I was on a ship. In fact, I was fine on board but weaving side to side back on land when we went sightseeing.”

The Woods sailed from Valencia to Ibiza, on to Tunisia, back to Sicily, Italy and Monte Carlo before returning to the Spanish port.

Despite the rain and “a sea of umbrellas”, the Woods found Florence beautiful and recommended everyone should spend a couple of hours in Piza.

They also had an adventure in Pompeii – the tour bus leaving them behind after

organisers failed to count heads as people clambered back on board. Mary said: “We were on time! Fortunately, we got a lift and got back to the ship.”

Back home, Eddie reflected: “All in all it was very successful and enjoyable. Thank you everyone for making it possible.” And Mary said: “All we did was get RTN Network and we got this wonderful cruise!”

Constable painting to be auctioned in July IT WAS announced this week that ‘The Lock’ by John Constable, a celebrated depiction of rural life that is currently part of a collection belonging to Baroness Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza, a former Miss Spain, is to be auctioned on 3rd July by Christie’s. It is thought the painting could sell for a record €32 million and the Baroness confessed she “needs the money.” The painting had been offered to Spain’s Culture Ministry against a deadline but no offer had been made. The Lock was purchased by Baron Heinrich von Thyssen in November 1990 for £10.78 million - at the time the highest amount ever paid for a painting by a British artist. It is part of a series of six featuring the River Stour and the landscape of the valley of Dedham in Suffolk that Constable produced between 1819 and 1825.

Timely gift saves appeal

by JAck troughton THE “WONDERFUL” gift of an antique gold Rolex watch insured an appeal to buy a specially adapted car for a disabled teenager’s family reached its target.

Organisers said the appeal had “stalled” at around 4,600€ until a “philanthropist” chipped in with the wristwatch – despite the best efforts of the Calpe community.

And now 16-year-old Javier Garcia Cervera is mobile and can be driven around the area in the converted Citroen by his parents.

Javier suffers from rare Sanfilippo syndrome, a degenerating and incurable form of Mucopolisacaridosis, but enjoys being out and about, especially watching the boats in Calpe harbour.

Speaking at the official presentation of the vehicle to Javier’s mum Marie Carmen, Terry O’Hara, of Calpe HELP, who helped organise the appeal, said Princess Letizia was President of MPS, the association of those suffering Mucopolisacaridosis

and related syndromes.

He said it had been hoped The Princess of Asturias or a representative could attend a presentation but it had not proved possible.

“We had collected something like 4,600€ and all of a sudden reached a deadlock. This man heard about Javier, he is Spanish, donated this antique gold Rolex which sold for more than 5,000€,” said Terry.

“He is a real philanthropist living in Calpe – we had reached an impasse and this wonderful man stepped in, it is a real Cinderella story.”

And Terry thanked expat organisations in the town that had supported the appeal – Rotary, HELP, the Charity Shop of Calpe, and the Association of Foreign Property Owners.

The Lions stage a bookstall on the first and third Friday of the month at Moraira Market and grateful members said its success depended on a good turnover of high quality reading material.

Over the years Stue McCall, of Costa Blanca Books, has donated hundreds of books and last week Lions President Nico Dekkers presented him with a certificate of appreciation to thank him for the generous donations.In return, Stue said he was “totally surprised” receiving the certificate and added he “looked forward to helping your very worthwhile organisation many more times in the future”.

Competing for tourists By

MICHAEL HOLDING, the former West Indian cricket fast bowler, and current pundit on Sky Sport’s excellent cricket coverage, has a favourite phrase that he trots out every summer in the UK. Whenever the camera pans onto someone enjoying an ice cream he more often than not makes the observation: “That isn’t a business I would want to be in here in the UK.” If he were in Spain I wonder how soon he would be saying that about the businesses looking to compete for the British tourist Pound?

I don’t want to be alarmist or pessimistic but having spent the last couple of weeks driving along the coasts that comprise the Costa Blanca, Costa Almería and Costa del Sol I have to say that I feel increasingly concerned for those businesses along the Costa Almería.

Discussing this with a friend recently I used the phrase ‘chalk and cheese’ to describe the Costas Blanca and del Sol to Almería. Driving up through Estepona, Marbella, Fuengirola, and Torremilinos recently it is hard not to notice just how established it is. Effectively it is one seamless stretch of mature building, established businesses, vibrant beaches and people! I am not talking about a peak holiday

period either - a Wednesday afternoon in May and the place was consistently busy, and, as they say, “success breeds success.”

Further up the coast I have spent time over the last month driving through Xàbia and Benidorm and again the impression is that they are comfortable in their own skin, the finished article, complete and busy doing what they know they do, and do very well.

The same can be said for Malaga and Alicante airports. They may not be as busy as in previous years, but compared to Almería they are absolutely heaving with flights and people.

Unfortunately the same can’t be said about the Costa Almería, who have arrived late at the Tourism party, and arrived in a hurry as well with halffinished properties dominating the skyline, and, in an increasingly depressing story, many leaving early as well with broken dreams, insolvent bars and properties sinking in negative equity in a far too familiar story.

Reflecting on this I came to the conclusion that the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol are like established Premiership teams. Safe in the top eight every year, they will continue to attract tourists in significant

numbers because they are established brands, consistent performers and in an age when people need to know what they are going to get for their money they deliver ‘exactly what it says on the tin’.

The Costa Almería on the other hand are like the team that unexpectedly found themselves in the Premiership, survived a year or two, but then found themselves in the Championship, and are now headed in the wrong direction away from the play-offs.

Unless the Costa Almería can reinvent itself and find a new form of tourism to concentrate on it is hard to see how anything will get better. In the Premiership the top teams are going from strength to strength, brand awareness is being exploited and newcomers to the market are picking the more romantic (or should I say successful) teams to support.

Those teams that get promoted bring a loyal band of genuine supporters but rarely do they attract sufficient numbers to make a difference, and having flattered to deceive, and dare I say conned themselves that they belong, they often fall back into relative obscurity.

Which means that the Costa Almería is in danger of being twinned with Bradford: now there’s a thing!

DID YOU watch the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday? Poor ole Engelbert, despite his valiant efforts, failed to get the UK enough points to avoid embarrassment.

He opened the marathon extravaganza from Baku, Azerbaijan with Love Will Set You Free but (and probably because of that early start) he seemed to have been forgotten by the time voting started some 25 years - erm sorry, 25 songs later. Even Engelbert’s lucky necklace, given to him by Elvis Presley, didn’t help and he was left bemused as only Belgium, Estonia, Latvia and Ireland awarded him any points. He ended up languishing at the bottom of the leader board.

Congratulating the winner, Swedish singer Loreen (with the dance track Euphoria), Engelbert said: “I’ve had many highs in my career and Eurovision has been a wonderful experience.” He added, “I want to thank everybody, especially my fans around the world for their words of support. I did the best for my country; the rest was out of my hands.” It sure was mate – you were doomed from the start.

For many years, since the contest opened up to encompass a much wider Europe, the voting has become a hotchpotch of neighbour voting for neighbour, cousin for cousin back-scratching, incestuous nonsense.

Our last actual win was in 1997 when Katrina and the Waves took the honours with Love Shine a Light. And that group was, of course, fronted by an American singer called Katrina Leskanich. Hmmm, I wonder if maybe some of the voters were confused by her surname and thought, “we better vote for her – she’s one of ours!”

Perhaps it’s just time to admit defeat and pull out of this farce altogether. The Daily Mirror even ran a poll suggesting just that. Their reporter noted, “Today bookies William Hill gave odds of 25/1 that the UK would pull out next year. It also offered 16/1 on the BBC turning to The X Factor’s Simon Cowell to take on the Eurovision entry for 2013.”

Mind you, I think it’s beyond even Simon Cowell to make any difference. Who would he persuade to take part? If Engelbert, with fifty plus years in the business couldn’t turn it around for Britain, who can? The Mirror states that William Hill suggests the following “odds for who would perform are the Spice Girls at 10/1, Susan Boyle at 12/1, Take That at 33/1; and both Wham and Elton John have odds of 50/1”. I’m not convinced. I don’t think even bringing back The Beatles would do it...

Here is a great point of view from outside Europe - American Juan Pablo left the following message on the Daily Mirror’s reader’s page: “I hail from the other side of the Atlantic and I am not even European, but I have seen the Eurovision contest for about ten years now, and I can clearly notice how the voting is totally political. I believe the UK has the type of talent to

crush all the other countries at will. However, I sense some bitterness towards the big countries and my gut feeling tells me that (as far-fetched as it sounds) even if you sent Adele, The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, name whoever you like, you would not win. Nevertheless, everybody knows where the great music comes - the UK.” Juan, thank you; that’s spot on.

I still haven’t really forgiven Engelbert for being the only act ever to keep The Beatles off the number one spot back in 1967 but, that said, I thought he did a really good job last Saturday. It was a good song and as the aforementioned Simon Cowell would say, “He nailed it...” He really did! I think as far as the Eurovision Song Contest goes the UK should be singing the very song that Engelbert kept the Fab Four off the top spot with: Release Me. Watts in Britain, boom bang-a-banging...

The busy premises are open Monday to Friday between 10am and 1pm and last year the committee made 19,000€ in donations to good causes.

Patricia Kyle, who heads the shop committee, told RTN the team’s numbers had been hit by serious illness and people returning to the UK. “We are absolutely desperate for shop volunteers – permanent volunteers or ‘as and when’ volunteers, their name goes down and we will ring when needed but if you can’t make it doesn’t matter.

“We are actually very busy at the moment and sales are up on last year.”

Jubilee Party at Entrenaranjos THIS SUNDAY, 3rd June, at the Inn on the Green in Laguna Green, which is located in the Entrenaranjos Urbanisation, there will be a Diamond Jubilee party. Ruta “Arte en las Cuevas” in San Miguel

MANY PEOPLE have heard and seen the cave houses in Rojales, but in San Miguel there are also some of these houses.

Earlier this year a group of artists in San Miguel formed MASM (Movimiento de Artistas de San Miguel de Salinas). For the first time they are displaying their work in four of these caves, Tia Ramblera, La Cueva de Maria, La Cueva de las Gachas

and Cueva No 4. This weekend the caves will be open, today, Friday 1st June 18.00 – 21.00; tomorrow, Saturday 2nd June 18.00 – 21.00 and Sunday 3rd June from 11.00 – 14.00. There is a map available at the San Miguel Tourist Office and at the Town Hall, pick one up and follow the route through the old cave houses of San Miguel and enjoy the art exhibition.

St. George’s Day Charity Success by louise clarke NOT ONLY did St George slay the dragon at the recent St George’s Day fiesta in Playa Flamenca, ‘he’ also managed to raise a whopping €1,409 for charity. Orihuela’s Councillor for Tourism and Beaches, Pedro Mancebo, who organised the fiesta day on the paseo, announced the fabulous amount earlier this week and said he was delighted that local charities would benefit so much from what was essentially a great day of fun.

HARD WORK Pedro told RTN: “I would like to say a very big thank you to the Royal British Legion, Paul Cunningham Nurses, Age Concern, HAH and The Little Pod Foundation for all their hard work and support on the day. Together with the charities from Orihuela, we had quite a market down on the promenade.” He added: “My thanks also go to the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Neighbourhood Watch and

the German association, dTOC (Deutschsprachige Tisch) who, although are not charities, were present at the fiesta and supported the event.”

WELL EARNED Mancebo commented: “It is just amazing how our neighbours and residents are willing to help each other.

Not only did we all have fun on St George’s Day but the charities can give themselves a well-earned pat on the back for their hard work for their own charity and supporting the fun day for all.”

“The charity stalls were a super idea for this type of fiesta,” concluded Mancebo, “they will be definitely down on the list for the next fiesta and a very big thank you must also go to all our residents and guests who attended Pedro and supported the fiesta you are amazing!”

by JAck troughton CELEBRATING A fifth anniversary Charter Dinner was a proud night for the Lions Club of Ondara Jalon and Orba as they welcomed special guests - members from other clubs across the Costa Blanca and representatives of the charities supported over the year.

The event at the Salamanca Restaurant, Jalon, was a huge success and club President Anna Cameron said: ‘We were delighted to welcome so many of our fellow Lions and representatives of the organisations we have helped to support during the year – it was a pleasure to see so many of them at our celebration.

“We also want to thank Helen of the Salamanca Restaurant and her staff for looking after us so well on the night – the food and the service were magnificent.”

And she said: “In addition, our thanks go to Ménage à Trois for the entertainment – many people took the opportunity to dance. It was particularly pleasing to have them with us as Philip Ashley, of the trio, of Sounds Familiar and many other musical ventures in the area, is one of our Lions.”

ENTERTAINERS ON the Costa Blanca come together on Saturday 9th June to pay tribute to the late John Bennetts who tirelessly worked organising concerts and shows.

The “friends” of John – who died earlier this year – are staging the farewell at the Casa del Cultura, Alfaz del Pi, from 8pm. Producer Pamela Dawson Tasker told RTN: “John worked with many musical and theatrical groups and many other entertainers - and with me too on some 60 concerts over the years.

“Many of them asked me to produce a concert that would be a tribute to him from all of us. As a result we have a unique show with an incredible number of artists contributing.”

The show is presented by Barry Britten and entry is by donation, with all proceeds being donated to the AECC, the Spanish cancer charity.

AT THE San Miquel de Salinas ‘House garden and outdoor living’ show last week many visitors purchased our book ‘Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style’to help them develop their terraces, balconies and windowsills into more colourful productive and liveable spaces. Hopefully more follow as these outdoor spaces can be as large as 10% to 400% of the indoor living space, the higher number being for those lucky enough to live in a penthouse.

Today when one looks at apartment buildings only some 10 to 20% show signs of plants in containers ranging from pots to

window boxes, troughs and growing tables or of being regularly used s a attractive and productive outdoor living spaces. The worst look like untidy outdoor storage areas with a few token dead plants not cleared out of pots since last summer... The best integrate to varying degrees facilities for enjoying the sun and alfresco eating and drinking with the growing of flowering and evergreen plants, herbs, fruit, vegetables and occasionally an egglaying hen.

With modern day containers and composts it is not difficult.

Indeed Part Six of Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style includes an A to Z of the types of useful containers now available while Part Four describe and illustrate the best hundred plants to use for sunny, semi shaded and shaded situations. Throughout the book there are numerous coloured fotos to show what can be done, often with very limited budgets…

In many ways growing things is easier and less time consuming for apartment owners than for the owner of a villa with a sizeable plot to landscape and care for. So think about preparing a Garden of Eden or Shangri-La in the sky in time for this year’s summer.

If you miss the allotment you used to have back in England vast amounts of vegetables can be grown in just one or two square metres. Indeed once this article is posted a couple of lettuces will be harvested off a three square metre terrace off our bedroom to take downstairs to the kitchen. We set it up originally to obtain a foto for the book ‘Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style’ showing how more than twenty vegetables could be grown in such a small space by using the walls as well as the floor space.

With flowers, herbs, veggies and fruit your terraces can not only be better used but the block of apartments will start to look more attractive.

Many will say it’s too hot to do so. But this not true if colourful awnings and blinds are installed to protect people, plantsand pets from the hottest sun. When a champion bonsai grower asked us to visit to see his large bonsai collection we were surprised to find them covering a roof top terrace in the centre of Gandia. How to throw the perfect Diamond Jubilee party The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee takes place from Saturday June 2nd to Tuesday June 5th 2012, with celebratory activities throughout the UK and by the expats on the Costa Blanca. Have a bag of pocket money toys to give as prizes. Also have a supply of red, white and blue balloons to play traditional games such as Balloon Balancing.

For this balloon game, you require paper plates and of course balloons. Ask each child to balance a balloon on the paper plate and then hold the plate in their hand.

They then have to walk a certain distance all the while not letting the balloon fall to the ground. The one that finishes first, without dropping the balloon from the paper plate, wins.

Face painting is also always popular.

Swimming pool safety

With the summer here, families and friends from the UK are beginning to flock in for the season: please consider the very real dangers of your swimming pool.

As a whole over the last 10 years in Spain there have been between 70 and 150 infant drownings per year, of which 70% have been in private or community swimming pools - the rest were at beaches, public pools, or rivers and lakes.

And by age group, drowning is the leading cause of injuryrelated death among children ages one to four and the second leading cause of death in children aged 14 and under.

On top of this, for every death there are approximately 2,000 non-fatal accidents involving water, but these may nevertheless result in permanent injury or brain damage.

In France and Australia pool surrounds are already required by law and there are already various EU directives concerning pool safety. No doubt pool fences and gates will eventually be mandatory in Spain as well but how many children’s lives will be needlessly lost or ruined before this comes into place?

Two companies on the Costa Blanca are particularly focusing on pool safety. The first company is concerned with stopping an infant or child being able to get to a pool in the first place.

The second company is concerned with making sure that people have sufficient First Aid knowledge to make a difference in the event of a drowning incident happening.

Liquid ice to clean the pipes

Altea to support unemployed green fingers ALTEA IS to make abandoned farms near the town available for agricultural training purposes for the unemployed to learn about organic farming. Environment councillor Miguel Angel Chapel said the purpose of the programme is to “encourage the cultivation of neglected tracts of urban land and eliminate plots that are in a deplorable condition, thereby improving the landscape and providing an opportunity for the unemployed to find work in organic farming.� The city will undertake to prepare the plots for cultivation and also provide irrigation systems. 45 plots will be available between 60 and 90 square metres. And the Department of Environment is to organise a traditional monthly market where producers can sell their surplus.

AGUAS DE Alicante are applying a pioneering system to clean potable water pipes by using liquid ice, a new technology patented by the concessionaire of water services in the city. The system will be especially useful in areas where second homes are popular: second homes tend to be susceptible to deposits and rust in the water pipes. The application involves forcing liquid ice through the pipes, a descaling system found to be one thousand times more effective than using water alone.

Greece poll crucial to euro STERLING’s VALUE against the euro will soar if Greek politicians opposing bail out and austerity win the election on 17th June, predict market analysts.

By Jack Troughton They believe the pound – already at a three and a half year high and moving in the 1.23 to 1.258 range could break the 1.30 barrier and perhaps even reach the giddy heights of 1.35.

Moneycorp analyst David Kearns said the currency market was in flux because of Eurozone uncertainties over both Greece and the Spanish banks, especially giant group Bankia.

“It is very much about the euro’s weakness rather than the pound’s strength – it is the same old story and it has been the major driver over the last month,” he said.

David, dealing manager in the foreign exchange expert’s private client department, said the Greek ‘pro-bail out’ faction failed to win enough votes to form a coalition after the first poll while the ‘anti-bail out’ group led by political party Syriza was in a strong position.

He explained the ‘anti’ lobby was against the EU and IMF austerity measures and if they gained power on 17th June wanted to stay in the single currency although they aimed to renegotiate the package “and reduce the amount of public sector cuts and perhaps extend the time frame to make life easier for the Greek population.”

David added: “There is clearly an expectation that Greece

could very easily leave the single currency, where before it was very unlikely.

OPINION “And the value of the euro is beginning to swing by the day depending on what the Greek opinion polls say, whether it is the pro or anti-bail out parties in the lead. It is very much politically driven.”

He said if Syriza gained a majority at the ballot box and took power “then in all likelihood there will be a very weak single currency very quickly and prices of 1.30 and even 1.35.”

However, David said if the pro-bail out parties New Democracy and PASOC won and formed a coalition “I would expect the euro to strengthen and the exchange rate to slip back to 1.20 against the pound. There is a lot riding on this election and we are in very worrying times.”

He said unfortunately Spain had come back to the forefront and it was placed there by concerns for the banking system.

David said the Bank of Spain had injected 4.5 billion euros into Bankia but the troubled group urgently needed another 19 billion euros of capital.

“The issue we have now is where the money is coming from. If it is through the tax payer, through the Bank of Spain, Bankia will be nationalised, like Northern Rock in the UK,” he explained.

INFLUX “The central bank is very reluctant to do that and it would be very unpopular – they hope to attract European Central Bank funds for an influx of money into Bankia but that door has been closed by the ECB.” He continued: “It is an awkward time to raise funds anyway but with a bank on the point of collapse, it is even more difficult.”

David said other Spanish banks were also in trouble and there was 50 billion euros of debt to be written down. “All banks need a massive injection of capital. One newspaper says to the tune of 180 billion euros.”

And he said the market was again talking of Spain as “too big to fail, too big to bail” yet government borrowing costs on 10 year bonds were already approaching the unsustainable rate of 7% - the level Greece, Portugal and Ireland needed help.

David concluded: “We keep coming to talk of Euro Armageddon but in the past it has always stepped back from the precipice – perhaps this time Greece will fall and the remaining countries could move together to strengthen the euro.

“But if Spain was to go it would be the end of the Eurozone because it is such a very, very big economy.”

Paying tax can be painless by

We spend a lot of time persuading people that it is a good idea to make their tax declarations. For some people the prospect of making their first appointment is received with the same level of enthusiasm as going to the dentist.

OK it can be painful parting with money but many of the residents who do make a declaration have a nil return with nothing to pay and it can save you money in the long run. Along with the prospect of reducing inheritance tax and capital gains tax comes a possible discount on prescription charges and access to medical care.

‘It’s usually much more straight forward than people think,’ explains Natalia Mozgunova, ‘For those residents who are already clients, there is relatively little to bring to the office and most of the information can be accessed online. So, for example, we have access to bank accounts and previous declarations.”

Natalia is one of the six multi-national tax advisors at Ábaco. Based on the fifth floor she and her colleagues have been preparing and sending tax returns now for weeks to make sure that everyone’s declaration is presented before the 30th June, ‘The appointment takes about half an hour and is usually quite straightforward. It’s done online now and we can tell our clients by the end of the appointment whether they have tax to pay, a nil return or even if they have overpaid tax to collect.’

One of the main confusions that British residents

experience is around the different Spanish and British tax years. In Spain the tax year is from January to December and the June tax return refers to income from the previous year. ‘So, for the tax returns for June 2012 we need bank statements spanning the period January 1st 2011 to December 31st 2011. That can be confusing for people at first,’ explains Natalia, ‘we also sometimes have problems with getting the P60s on time’.

In some cases people will even be due a refund, ‘The Tax Authority must return any overpaid tax within 6 months and if you’ve made your declaration in good time it can come through quite quickly.If you are entitled to a refund it will be paid directly into your bank account.’ Ábaco have recently received a notification from the Tax Authority to warn people about some ‘phishing’. Emails are being sent out promising that overpaid tax will be returned if the taxpayer provides their credit card details. ‘Neither the Tax Authority, nor any other official Spanish department would expect you to directly insert confidential details such as this through an email.’

So, it’s not about pulling teeth and it’s nothing to be afraid of. Once you’ve had your first one, and you become a veteran resident tax declarer you can feel suitably satisfied with yourself.

Concerns over Banks and the Euro continue to grow AS I write this article five Spanish Banks, Banco Popular, Bankinter, Banca Civica, and Bankia along with its parent Banco Financiero y de Ahorro (BFA), were downgraded by S&P. One of these, Spain’s fourth-largest bank, Bankia, has asked the government for a bailout worth 19bns euros ($24bn; £15bn). Bankia is now saying it made a 2.98bn-euro loss for 2011 rather than the 309m euros in profit it announced in February.

Earlier on Friday 25th May, trading in Bankia shares was suspended on the Madrid stock exchange while its management put together a restructuring plan. Yet only two weeks ago, Bankia had a 4.47bn-euro loan by the Spanish bailout fund.

The IMF announced on 21st May 2012 that Spanish banks losses could be larger than expected at Euro 220 – 260 bln, implying that the government will have to step in massively to support its Banks and Cajas. We wonder how?

We are edging worryingly close to a run on banks in major European economies, according to Russell

Investment’s Al Jalso.

Speaking to Citywire Global, Jalso – who is lead manager on firm’s $1.8bn global bond fund – warned Italian and Spanish citizens spooked by further deepening of the Eurozone crisis could suddenly withdraw vast amounts of money from the countries’ respective banks.

“We have had 30% of deposits withdrawn from Greek banks. We don’t yet have massive deposit withdrawals in Spain and Italy but if there was a run on banks in these countries then it could force politicians into serious action,” said Jalso.

This could lead to limits on how much people can withdraw from the Banks.

Also the relative credit-worthiness of Santander UK - the UK’s fifth biggest High Street bank - has been questioned by one of the main financial credit rating agencies, Moody’s. The downgrades also included Santander’s parent, Banco Santander, one of Spain’s biggest banks.

So the big question is: where do you put your money? when the traditional safe haven of the Bank now

seems the least safe option.

You could take your money out and put it under the mattress, but not a good idea.

You could convert your Euros back into Sterling, but you would lose out due to the current exchange rates, we should see Sterling gain in strength against the Euro (good news for pensioners living here who have their pension paid in Sterling). This is due to the mess in Europe not the strength of the UK economy, which as you know is back in recession.

If you do convert then you are still left with the question, where do you put your sterling once you have it?

Well the good news is it’s not all doom and gloom there are some countries out there seen as safe havens that to date have not been affected by this crisis and products that have weathered the storm.

Spanish Property Inheritance Tax – a realistic solution AN EFFECTIVE solution to the IHT problem in Spain is for the owner(s) to invest the property into a UK Private Limited company which they would own as Shareholders. by

This method can avoid taxes in Spain in the future, in respect of the property, as under EU Treaties a UK company is only taxed in one jurisdiction, which can be the UK, and no taxes should be payable during ownership in Spain.

A UK company is not classed as an offshore company unlike a company of Gibraltar or the Isle of Man, which would be charged an annual tax by Spain of 3% as neither are part of the European Union.

Contrary to popular belief there would be no 7% Property Transfer Tax payable on this transaction, unlike other property transactions in Spain.

There is also no Capital Gains Tax implication in Spain when you invest a

property into a UK Limited Company.

This is because the Hacienda calculates an investment value based on the original purchase price, as shown in the Public deed. Coupled with this, Spanish Tax Residents who are over 65 when they invest their property into a UK company do not have any CGT liability in the majority of Regions, on the basis that the property is the owner’s habitual residence.

Shares in the UK Company can be dealt with in a UK Will and, depending on the structure of the company the shares may also be exempt from Inheritance Tax in the UK. A further advantage of the company structure is that ‘attributable expenses’ such as mortgage interest and utility bills can all be tax deductible by the company.

This is a simple solution costing less than most probate and legal fees in Spain when an owner of a Spanish property dies. A further benefit is that the beneficiaries will not be required to obtain an NIE number in order to inherit.

Costumer complaints and claims against banks in Spain by

WHAT CAN a costumer do when the bank charges higher fees than agreed? What action can a customer take if the bank does not inform costs of a bank product or the risk involved?

First of all, it is quite common for people without a good knowledge of Spanish to get lost with all the different names given to the banks in Spain: caixa, kutxa, caja, banca, banco etc.

The truth is that nowadays, this picture has been simplified, at least concerning names and types of banks, as right now all the financial entities in Spain must be banks and as such are under the control of the Bank of Spain.

We quite often receive in our office queries and appointment requests from bank customers / users in search of the correct

information about their rights and possibilities to complain or claim against a bank for being charged a higher commission than agreed, or for taking too much time to transfer or release money.

In these cases, when the issue with the bank is a serious problem and the amount to be claimed is highly important, our firm can provide advice and assist the customer to take the necessary actions. However, on many occasions the commissions charged are so small that hiring a law firm is not practical: not everyone can afford to hire a lawyer to claim against a bank for an improperly charged commission of 18€.

It is good for our readers to know that they can deal themselves with any small banks complaints, first at their bank branch and when necessary in front of the Bank of Spain but please also keep in mind that when it is a serious problem or the amount is significant we advise seeking the services of a lawyer - of course our firm would be more than pleased to assist you with this issue.

First the customer should direct the complaint to the attention of the bank’s Customer Services or Ombudsman, who have the obligation to provide a contact form and other details for this service.

If the consumer fails to receive a response from the Customer Service Office or the Ombudsman at the branch or if the

response received is unsatisfactory, the complaint may be directed to the Bank of Spain as a user of the bank services.

The consumer can initiate a complaint procedure by personally submitting the complaint in any branch of the Bank of Spain either by post or through the virtual office created for this purpose.

Besides providing proof of identification as well as the relevant data from the bank /branch against which the complaint is being filed and explaining the reason for the complaint and attaching the documents supporting his arguments, the consumer should also provide proof that he previously addressed the Customer Service Office or the Ombudsman at his bank branch.

The claim should be resolved by the bank of Spain Complaint Department within 4 months from the presentation date.

Paint the coast pink

By Louise Clarke MARIA AND the Pink Ladies will be hosting their third charity walk next Sunday, 10th June. The five kilometre sponsored walk and fun day is in aid of breast cancer awareness and is supported by the Orihuela Town Hall. All proceeds from the event will go to the AECC cancer charity. The walk starts and finishes at the promenade in Playa Flamenca in front of Surfers Bar and adjacent to the Playa Flamenca Post Office.

The registration fee is just 5€ and if you can raise any more money from sponsorship, that would be appreciated too! Last year nearly 500 took part in the event and an

amazing 19,000€ was raised as a result; a figure that the organisers would really love to beat this year. Everyone is welcome; men, women, children and dogs and you are all invited to wear something pink!

LIVE MUSIC There will be individual prizes and group prizes for fancy dress and after the walk, there will be a great fun day at the promenade with something there for all the family; from market stalls, a bouncy castle, face painting, live music and much more. There will also be refreshments provided by

Breakaway’s Bar and Surfers and of course, a traditional hog roast, paella, tapas, burgers and hot dogs and even an icecream van!

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Blogs about Spanish FISH STREETS Some false friends are just downright unfortunate. There is a large and prestigious (well it was prestigious) residential complex near here whose creators had the marvellous idea of naming its streets after fish. It came to mind recently as I had to go and visit someone in calle Lubina (Sea Bass Street). I mean, whoever convinced them that was a good idea in either language?

Bearing in mind that a large proportion of the residents are English speaking, I really think that ‘Monkfish street’ takes the prize. Do you know what that is in Spanish? ‘Calle Rape’. I wonder how much their advisors were paid to come up with that idea.

THE LAND OF THE BLIND “En el país de los ciegos, el tuerto es el rey.” I find this saying very appealing as it describes the truth rather too often about our own incompetence and that of people around us. The saying contains a super word “tuerto” which means “one-eyed”. Don’t you think it’s great that the Spanish have a special word to describe someone who is one-eyed? Does this reflect a violent history I wonder? It’s rather like the word “manco” – one-handed or one-armed. Cervantes was nicknamed “el manco” because he lost a hand in the Battle of Lepante, a fact which rather reinforces my question about Spanish history.

Sorry – back to the point. The saying we are looking at is: “En el país de los ciegos, el tuerto es el rey” “In the country of the blind, the one-eyed person is king”. I find this is applicable in many situations, for example when trying to work out what’s wrong with your computer. Nobody has a clue, but the one person who knows a little bit more than the rest, is hailed as an expert. That’s what the saying actually means!

SPANISH ROAD SIGNS - DIVERSION Well you can’t say that Spain road workers aren’t partial to

diversions. You arrive anywhere you haven’t been for a while, and all of a sudden you can’t go the way you remember. There’s a big sign pointing you the other way, but it doesn’t say “diversión” does it? It says “desvío”.

So, I hear you say, what does “diversión” mean? Well, it means entertainment! I’m sure you’ll agree that there isn’t an immediate association between this and negotiating a load of backstreets in your car, but there is in fact an interesting link there.

In Spanish “diversión” means to get away from the norm, to divert from the routine and amuse yourself with other things. Something that is fun is “divertido” – it distracts you from your daily routine for a while. So there is a connection between this and “diverting” you from that well known path for a while.

I’ll leave you to think about that, perhaps next time you are following one of those wonderful diversions or “desvíos” that not only take you off the beaten track, but forget to tell you how to get back on it again at the other end.

MY FAVOURITE SPANISH WORD 18th June is the day of the Spanish language, and for the last couple of years this has been marked by speakers and students of Spanish choosing their favourite word. Some people like words with positive meanings, like “solidaridad” and “amor” whilst others go for the sound of the word itself, like “meliflua” and “murciélago”.

My favourite Spanish word is “azul”. It has a long, breathy sound like the wind, and I like the way the Spanish clearly say the “l” at the end of the word. To experience this for yourself just ask a Spanish person to name the colour (that should be easy to do, just point to a blue garment and say “Cómo se llama este color?”) and maybe you will share my aesthetic appreciation. On reflection, it might be better to ask someone who’s selling you some material or something, rather than some old chap sitting at a bar.

Stopping spam Pam from La Marina asks: HI AUNTY, I have used my Hotmail email address for about 10 years and have not had any problems until now. I am getting spam emails, which, admittedly, are going into my Junk box. Some are asking for my details like name, address, bank details etc. (i.e. One from HM Tax office saying I am due a refund, and asking for my details, and one from Paypal, again asking for my details - this one I forwarded on to PayPal Security Dept.) and quite a few from individuals from various countries. I click them all as Junk Mail, and delete them straight away. I have the latest AVG, Super Anti-Spyware and Malwarebytes, and I have scanned with all these in Safe mode, but I am still getting them. Is there anything I can do to stop these emails coming through?

Aunty Says: I’m afraid not Pam. It won’t be due to anything untoward running on your computer. Simply your email address has got onto various spammers and companies databases.

If the Hotmail Junk Mail function is doing its job I wouldn’t worry too much about it and well done for taking the time to inform PayPal as I know they take this kind of thing seriously. A quick reminder to everyone to regularly check your spam folder (if you have one) as I sometimes find legitimate emails have been mistakenly dumped in there.

Cannot play CD’s Viv from Albir asks: HI AUNTY, I had Windows XP in England and bought Family History CD’s. I now have Windows Seven and it won’t accept the CDs - its saying I need to register them, but I already have and the company gave me a new registration no. which the computer won’t accept.

Can you think of a reason why the

computer won’t accept them? I tried emailing the company without much luck.

Aunty Says: The most likely reason is that the version of the Family History program you have was written for XP and not for Windows 7, quite a common complaint I’m afraid. You may find there is a later version available from the software company that makes the program.

There is a thing called the ‘Compatibility Wizard’ which you can get from ‘Start’ ‘Control Panel’ ‘Programs’ ‘Use an older program with this version of Windows’ and follow the instructions in the wizard.

Scanning without instruction Freda via email asks: HELLO AUNTY. When I restart my computer following a Spybot scan and fixing of problems, a new scan starts immediately without any instruction. Also the same problems appear to crop up after updates. Do you think I have a problem?

Aunty Says: I think you do, Freda. You could try starting you computer in Safe Mode (F8 before Windows starts) and running Spybot again. Also download, update and run Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware from www.enetcomputers.net which should cure the problem or give you a better idea what is causing it.

Backing up computer files

Derek from asks Alcalali: HI THERE. Many thanks for all your help in the past. Although I’ve used a computer for quite a while I have to admit I am not that confident with some aspects I would like to become more computer literate. I would like to back up everything on my computer in case of future failure, I know it is strongly advised but I’m not sure how to go about it. Also I have many photos which I do not want to completely discard but would like to store them on a disc for future reference. I have a few books on computers but they are not particularly helpful & you can’t ask a book questions. I will be glad of any help you can give me relating to this. Also I would like to back up separately i.e. documents and photos etc.

Aunty Says: Probably the easiest way these days is to copy it all onto a USB memory stick. You can pick up an 8GB one for under €10 and that will hold 2000 to 3000 photos, depending on the quality/resolution of the photo. When you plug the USB stick in it will appear as the next available drive letter in My Computer. I simply use the copy and paste function of Windows in the same way you would copy a document from one folder to another.

Updating pages on websites Billy via email asks: I AM on Yahoo homepage and on 29th July Yahoo welcomed me to new homepage. Since that date the same page has shown with the same unchanged picture and news items.

Any ideas how I can move this and change it so I get the updated page when I switch on? Many thanks.

Aunty Says: Sometimes simply pressing the F5 key does the trick. The other way is a little more complicated and involves clearing out your temporary internet files etc. Let me know how you get on Billy.

Auction’s Spanish flavour

By Jack Troughton HIGHLIGHT OF an auction in aid of single parent support group Guardian Angels was a beautiful flamenco dress as the charity netted more than 500€.

Bidding for the garment – modelled

by Shara (pictured) – was described as “feverish” and reached 30€ before the hammer came down.

Tricia Barr, founder and President of Guardian Angels, watched the drama unfurl at the El Cid Restaurant, Benidoleig.

“It was an exciting event and we raised over 500€ for the group,” she said. “We are a registered charity receiving no grant from the government. It will help us continue our work supporting single parents throughout the Costa Blanca and we certainly do this again.”

Charity Competition Golf at La Sella

HELP OF Denia and Marina Alta are having a charity golf competition day on 21st June to raise funds and provide help to those in need throughout the area.

The La Sella course as one of the most popular and challenging in the region will host the competition that promises to be a great day out and is sure to be well attended.

There will be two competitions. Starting at 9.30am with a shotgun start will be a pairs Betterball at a cost of 50€ per person, to include food afterwards. To non-players food will be 15€ and include wine. Buggies will be available at 20€.

Babies living in smokers’ homes at increased risk of Cot Death APPROXIMATELY ONE in 2,000 babies die due to Cot Death (sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS).

Although the cause is unknown, there are predisposing factors that can influence risk to the baby. Cigarette smoke is one of the main risk factors for cot death. And smoking during pregnancy increases the risk: the greater the number of cigarettes smoked the greater the risk.

Most parents are aware that their babies should be protected from the risks of exposure to cigarette smoke.

However, in reality, try as they might many just can’t ‘kick the habit’.

The absolute ideal time to give up smoking is prior to pregnancy. This goes for both Mum and Dad. Obviously not all pregnancies are planned but once pregnant, smoking should be stopped immediately.

If both partners smoke it is much easier to face quitting smoking together. Partners will support each other and ultimately provide a smoke-free home environment for their baby.

Research has shown that the success rate for quitting smoking is only 5% when no intervention or help is given i.e. when somebody tries to ‘go it alone’ and give up by sheer will-power only.

Valerie Jean School of Dance Spectacular THE VALERIE Jean School of Dance is to stage its annual spectacular ‘Dance Revolution’ at the Careline Theatre, Alcalali, on Saturday 9th June with curtain up at 7.30pm.

Campaign to bring back smoking (part 2)

CHOOSING YOUR products well for smoking is a must as although there is no guarantee that your first attempt will produce the exact results you hoped for poor quality product will not increase in quality no matter how long you smoke it.

The degree of salting and the length of the smoke are questions of individual taste but good preparation is essential to reduce the risks. Although there are some ready made mixtures of curing salts which permit small quantities of potassium nitrate E250 and sodium nitrate E251 I prefer my smoking… naked. There is also no need for my method to use saltpetre E252 although a permitted preservative its use is strictly controlled and is usually used to keep bacon pink.

Neither do I favour the practice of injecting any product with any solution as with some commercial businesses as any route for solution becomes a potential route for bacteria.

So, the secret to smoking is in the quality of the product, the brining by salt or solution, the time and recipe, hot or cold smoke, and no, liquid smoke will not do and is not the same, the temperature and length of smoke and of course the type of medium and wood you use. Simple really, and there is plenty of information on the web as well as countless books on the subject. I try to use a minimum of salt and prefer cold smoking to hot and

Start simply, at home perhaps, and choose a Spanish staple as well as a well known favourite of pork to start, believe me as our last smoking session proved, two slices of fried own smoked bacon in-between two slices of homemade bread makes the best bacon sandwich ever. At the same time we also produced two sides of smoked salmon, four ham hocks, a couple of racks of ribs, some quail and even some smoked salt.

It is worth mentioning that I have not forgotten the complicated American style of smoking and all of its variations and styles and more commonly referred to as Barbecue, Bar-B-Que or even just BBQ but there needs to be a lot more room for research which we are currently engaged in as well as print space before I can interpret it properly without offending too many aficionados.

After much searching I have at last found a source of French oak wood chippings and at a very reasonable price but unless I can find a way to transport them to Spain cheaply I shall have to continue explaining to airport staff why my bags are stuffed full of sawdust. “Pinocchio has committed suicide” or “My ventriloquist dummy Alan has fallen victim to a veracious African termite” may work as an excuse once or twice but the trouble is, if I’m honest and say that I’m a smoker I’ll probably get locked up.

MY RECIPE FOR YOUR OWN DRY-CURED SMOKED BACON 2kg piece boned belly of pork 500g coarse sea salt 125g Demerara sugar 25g juniper & allspice berries, lightly crushed Mix together the salt, sugar and spices. Find a non metal container to snugly hold the meat (a few holes in the base will let the excess liquid drain but this is not essential), put some of the mix in the base, then the meat and rub more mix on the top, retain some of the salt mix. Cover and store somewhere cold such as the bottom of the fridge.

After 2 days drain off the excess liquid and repack with further salt/ sugar mix. Repeat this for the next 2 days. After this time rinse off the meat and pat dry and leave the meat somewhere uncovered to dry for up to 48 hours (although the meat should ideally be hanging for this time in practice you are likely to leave it in the fridge). You now have green bacon, ready to smoke.

You can now fire up your smoker with your desired choice of chippings.

Smoke for between 24 to 48 hours at an ideal temperature of between 21c to 32c. But do not worry if whilst getting used to your smoker the fire goes out, or gets a little hotter, it is a matter of trial and error. Slice and enjoy, this will keep for a couple of months somewhere cool and dry, or longer if frozen.

Laughing gear

IF THERE is one gift I treasure more than anything it has to be my sense of humour. To be able to laugh at things and to see the funny side has kept me giggling within over the years, and has greatly helped me to make connections with the Spirit World. To laugh is such a wonderful medicine and under stress it isn’t easy, but it does help us to have a great sense of humour.

Our minds are finely tuned instruments. They can recall times when we laughed and laughed, remembering often the detail exactly, because that was what made us laugh. We have the very happiest memories when we were laughing and carefree and sniggered our way through childhood. Laughter was a daily activity then, as it should be now, but adulthood brings responsibilities and we become more serious; and less likely to laugh something off.

The ups and downs of life have prepared us for what may happen, but nothing brings resolve more than to see the funny side, and laughing is better than crying any day. Happiness often has to be worked at very carefully, and a smile is our outward indication of our feelings, a sign to show to the World that despite all, we can still send a strong message out to anyone and everyone.

I was taking a service in Belgrave Square, London, one Sunday afternoon when I spotted a large woman at the back of the room. I got the feeling that she had digestive problems and suggested trapped wind, a sign of extreme stress sometimes. anymore. Smiles appeared all around, then they quickly disappeared again as we all returned to the serious business of connecting with loved ones from the other side.

In demonstrations I like to help people to see that Spirit does have a sense of humour, and if the audience can laugh it does lighten the energies, dispelling fear, often encountered by those who do not know why they came and are nervous. I always wondered why an extra large man, like me, could ever be called a Medium by any stretch of the imagination. But it is so! And yes, I do like my steak Medium Rare actually.

Facing a sea of people in public events often includes those who are grieving, the desperate who want to make contact with a lost one who has passed over. But often it is the knowing smile of a true Spiritualist that grabs my attention first. That smile says that despite all, their loved ones are there in the Spirit World, and the smile shows that they know it.

We are born on this Earth with no plans as to where we will go, how we will travel, or who is going with us.

We have had the knockbacks and the tears and yet with faith in Spirit we are never alone if we do not want to be. On this the true Spiritual pathway of life we can and do fall over sometimes, but we can and do laugh it off, pick ourselves up and carry on. We know that we are Spirit living in a body, and that the Earthly body ages and dies, leaving us free to enter the Spirit World. This life we live today is maybe one of many, come what may. Get your laughing gear around that!

Hi Ho Johnny! … Away!

When I heard that Johnny Depp was going to appear in the film version of The Lone Ranger I naturally assumed he would be playing the part of the masked hero, but to my surprise he will in fact be playing the role of Tonto his faithful Indian friend, and here´s a fairly good reason as to why this might be the case: Over the last few years Johnny has been going on quite a bit about his unique ancestry and recently revealed that his great-grandmother was a Cherokee Indian.

So, working on the premise that Johnny is not pulling everybody´s plonker just to promote the movie, I

really do hope this to be the case, as a man called LaDonna Harris, who is president of the Americans for Indians scheme said: “As Johnny is reprising the historic role of Tonto it seemed like a natural fit to officially welcome him into our Comanche family. He seemed proud to receive the invitation, and we were honoured that he so enthusiastically agreed.”

Depp, wearing ripped jeans and eyeliner, arrived at the ceremony bearing gifts, a customary sign of appreciation for the tribal elders, and several photographs were taken on this great occasion by his newly adopted family. However, it’s not

If this is all just a publicity stunt, Johnny could well be in for an interesting new haircut.

There’s a man in America called Howard Stern who has a huge following on both radio and TV and has even had a film made about his meteoric rise to fame in the late 70´s.

He is known as the ‘Shock Jock’ due to his outrageous line of questioning with guests on his shows and the way he bluntly deals with people who phone in whingeing about something or other. Since watching the movie of his early years I have admired greatly the way he broke new ground in the medium of broadcasting, but boy did it all go bosoms up for him last week. Howard decided to take on a judge’s role on yet another one of these half-baked TV shows America’ Got talent. On comes a 7-year-old lad from Philadelphia called Mir Money who starts rapping and Howard buzzed him off, and as he started to explain his decision the wee boy started to cry, the crowd started to boo, then Howard got up onto the stage, gave the lad a hug and said, “I’m so sorry, you’re a terrific young man, you’re so brave.” Then he turned to the baying audience and said, “I’m not cut out for this, man, I’m not cut out for it, I’m shaking, man, I can’t do it, radio is for me - this is not for me.” And in the true controversial Howard Stern way, that was the end of that. He only joined the show the week before as Piers Morgan’s replacement.

Batman and Robina Warner Bros and DC Comics plan to release two brand new animated Batman movies on DVD later this year, and holy moly, Batman’s sidekick Robin is set for a sex change as the caped crime fighters´ buddy is to be voiced by a girl. According to the Hollywood Reporter Ariel Winter who found fame on US TV show Modern Family, will play Carrie Kelly, the brand new Robin, Peter Weller will take on the lead role of Batman/ Bruce Wayne, and Prison Break’s Williams will double up as Harvey Dent/Two-Face. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is the planned title for the series … hands up all of you who just can’t wait to get down to your local video shop.

It’s all a bit blurry to me If you are a Blur fan and are beside yourself waiting for their first album since they decided to reform last year, sadly you are in for a bit of a long wait. Front man Damon Albarn has apparently blown the possibility of a new Blur album by walking out of a recent recording session.

The album´s producer William Orbit has revealed they have been laying down new tracks in secret sessions ahead of their planned reunion gig at London’s Hyde Park in August. The inside track, according to Orbit, is that the whole thing was aborted when Albarn threw his toys out the pram before quitting without warning. He told NME magazine, “They were getting some demons out of the way, and the new stuff sounded amazing, then it all suddenly stopped and the rest of the band were like, ‘Is that it?’ …

A FEW months ago I advised that the EU was working on harmonising all the traffic authorities’ databases within the EU so they can be easily accessed by the authorities in all EU countries.

What this means is that in Spain the police authorities will be able even at the roadside to key in the details of even foreign EU vehicles, such as registration or VIN details, into their PDAs or lap-tops in their cars. Within a couple of minutes they can see if the vehicle is legal with all the owners’ details etc. and also whether the relevant taxes have not been paid, ITVs/MOTs done etc. Also camera number plate recognition systems will be in operation to automatically flag the traffic police.

I gain no pleasure in advising this even though I have over the last few years had a few emails from Brit expats who are fed up with those who have not done the necessary. It was suggested that I start a campaign to expose all the illegal vehicles where the Brit owners have ignored the laws and failed to change the registration plates over to Spanish ones.

As a retired person, I cannot carry out such actions for the obvious reasons.

In fact I have had a couple of local expats look as if they wanted to attack me for being the bearer of bad news when they find out the costs involved.

The new proposed system is still being finalised in Brussels and then it will take a few months to set up the computer

changes so you still have time. What are the points to watch?

How long have you been here? If you have not paid your UK Road Fund taxes or have no MOT, the distinct possibility is that your vehicle has been written off the DVLA system, or the Vehicle Operator as exported, so legally your vehicle does not exist.

You will have to prove ownership and also that the VAT has been paid in the country of origin e.g. the UK: this will present a problem to Trafico who may penalise such owners with fines. Also there are fines up to £1,000 for each offence where the vehicle has been exported without advising the DVLA or the Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA). As the UK will have access to Spain’s records they may decide to fine those who have not obeyed this law.

The vehicles will be treated as imports as it will be too late to register them as personal belongings with no import duties to pay so you may be expected to pay 4% of the value of the vehicle as specified in the Spanish tax listings (Agencia Tributaria).

Another caveat is that if your vehicle is an old diesel or worn out petrolengine car, then it may be unacceptable

to be imported due to too high an exhaust pollution output. Perhaps the only way then to legally import it is, if it is 25 years-plus old, as a ‘Historic’ which could cost up to €1,000, and a lot of specialist help. But then we can expect that such cars will be banned from regular use in city centres unless they are attending a properly organised and officially approved old vehicle rally - this is already happening in Germany.

I will advise more as the new legislation is formalised and finalised, but I suggest that those affected do not leave it too late unless you plan to scrap the vehicle any way. Some that are older than ten years or more are potential future classics so if you have room under cover to store them. More as the proposed legislation unfolds.

Swimming weather is here again: already searched out the costumes so good luck to you all and please drive carefully. I have met some mad people on the roads recently, speeding and overtaking over the double white lines on tight twisty roads. It ruins a gentle day out but I know one reason they do it. It is because I have overtaken them when safe to do so and they then feel that their ego must be satisfied after being overtaken by a man with a head of white hair.

This should not happen Noel’s world of golf

EARLIER THIS week I met with the secretary of a golf society when I was out to dinner with some friends. He told me a very interesting story about his golf society and how over the last few years they have used an agent to arrange their golf days rather than book the golf courses themselves. The idea was that because the society were dealing with a British agent they would get a better service and should they need to make a complaint then it would fall on sympathetic ears and maybe something would get done. This turned out to be somewhat fanciful at best.

At one venue the society arrived expecting to find twenty buggies reserved for them. There were twelve reserved and consequently there was a wait for some players of over one hour for a buggy. A complaint was made but little if anything was done to get an apology of some kind from the golf course and an assurance that there would not be a repeat the next time they come.

Last week they arrived at another club only to find more grass in the car park than on some tee boxes and greens that were as smooth as the local rugby field. Once again the telephone call to the agent was

disappointing to say the least. He was told that all the agents do is book the tee times they were not responsible for the condition of the golf course. Not an untrue statement but you would think there would be a good deal of sympathy shown and at least some representation made to the course manager in an effort to get some form of compensation copied to the golf society. No such thing.

So once again I ask why use agents and give them good money to make arrangements that can be done in seconds directly by email? At least by making the booking direct the secretary would have had a contact at the club to meet with and speak to so that something was done to assure members this sort of thing would not happen again.

Golfers pay good money that does not come easily to the vast majority to play golf. They deserve to be looked after by their society committees; anything less is totally unacceptable and shows a blatant disregard for the responsibilities committee members have to their own members. The people who elected them to look after their best interests.

The Professional Scene THE PGA Championship at Wentworth once again proved the depth of talent we have on The European Tour as so many new names came to the top of the leaderboard over the first few days. The West Course stood up to recent criticism and was in superb condition for the flagship event on The European Tour.

Some surprising names had a long weekend with perhaps the performance of World Number One Rory McIllroy being the most worrying to many. His inability to be able to make good contact with the golf ball was severely punished and left him stating that he needed to work harder.

Has the burning desire to be a record breaker left him already?

Over the first three days the tournament was anybody’s to win and with complaints from many after Saturdays play course designer Ernie Els exploded in a surprising dig at those in authority as he joined many of his fellow professionals in stating the greens were too dry. Justin Rose and Luke Donald however saw this as just another challenge and found their attitude pay huge dividends as they finished top of the leaderboard before Sunday’s final round.

In the last year and a half Luke Donald has become extremely comfortable in his own position as a true golf superstar and his

performance on Sunday just confirmed what most of us know: there is nobody to touch at the moment when he is on form. His final round of sixty eight was enough to enable him to retain a title for the first time in his career and return to the top of The World Rankings for his forty-sixth week at the top.

Luke, along with many of the games top players, will rest up before the start of The US Open in two weeks and miss out on The Wales Open this weekend. Paul Lawrie put in another sterling performance as he continues his pursuit of a place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team in September in Chicago with a tied second place finish alongside Justin Rose, sure to be a teammate in a few months’ time.

The Final Whistle

MARIO BALOTELLI may be as mad as a bag of weasels but he’s dead right to threaten to walk off the pitch should he encounter any racial abuse at the European Championships in Ukraine and Poland. UEFA will be desperately hoping that its tournament goes off without a hitch but with families of black players in the England team having decided not to travel for fear of violence and abuse, it’s already clear that UEFA’s decision to award the two countries the competition in the first place was a massive gamble.

Indeed, with the likes of Theo Walcott, Alex OxladeChamberlain and Ashley Cole in the England squad, the game with Ukraine on 19th June could turn out to be hugely unsavoury. Let’s hope it doesn’t but if racism does rear its ugly head, let’s also hope we get a TV shot of Michel Platini squirming in his VIP seat. Perhaps then UEFA and FIFA will admit that the problem does exist despite all their highly financed yet largely cosmetic campaigns.

TIP-TOP AT TWICKERS Here’s a shock...the Rugby Football Union did something rather sensible this week. Rather than banning England centre Manu Tuilagi for his borderline tip-tackle on Danny Care during the Premiership final, they decided to clear him after agreeing that the Quins’ player’s knee had hit the ground before his torso. Their decision backed up that of referee Wayne Barnes who copped a bit of grief for not sending off Tuilagi at Twickenham. However, the disciplinary panel agreed with him that a penalty kick was suitable punishment for Tuilagi’s reckless, but not malicious tackle.

Probably even more relieved than Barnes will be England coach Stuart Lancaster. His charges have just embarked on what promises to be a really tough tour to South Africa and Tuilagi is his only stand-out midfield star. Losing him to a ban would have been a disaster but I’m sure that his potential participation in the Test matches will have had little to do with the RFU decision. I mean, that would imply that someone at HQ had a modicum of common sense but as we all know, given the way the game has been run over the past 2 or 3 years, that’s highly unlikely.

THIS WEEK’S competition was the 5th round of the Summer Championship: the venue was the Eden Canal stretch of the Rio Segura.

This was the first time for some time that we have fished here and the bamboo reeds are desperately trying to take back the areas that we have cleared to fish. Virtually all pegs needed some TLC although they are continually fished.

The water level was down some 18 inches to 2 feet but with a slight flow.

The weights were not as good as some previous matches, and quite a few anglers lost big fish.

by Terry Screen The 10th and penultimate round of the Spring Series was fished on 22nd May at Blanca, aptly named because of all the blanks that occur. Today there were five dry nets and there would have been more if it had not been for the Bleak.

Some of the top anglers in the area are struggling for bites, but the ‘Sweetie Lady’ showed these anglers the way home winning the match with 9kgs.

I have been reading a report in one of the local freebie papers that the Reservoirs are only half full but the three large ones that are used for match fishing, i.e. Beniarres, Argos and Pedrera, have just started to recede from being brim full. I have not seen any of these three Reservoirs half full for 6-7 years. The road over the broken bridge at Pedrera was always accessable until 3-4 years ago, and is now flooded to a depth of 5-6 feet - this has made fishing Pedrera almost impossible in many places.

KICKING A MAN WHEN HE’S UP GB Taekwondo has received £4.8 million of public funding since 2009 but despite this its officials are completely unaccountable when it comes to outlining how their selection policy works with regards to the British team at the London 2012 Olympics. So far, no-one from the sport has taken the trouble to explain why Aaron Cook, the reigning European champion and likely number one seed for the games has been left out of the team. The thinking is that in a sport which is designed to put a few noses out of joint on that mat, Cook has done exactly that in the hallowed offices of the governing body after leaving their high-performance training programme. Cook has appealed the decision to Sports Resolution, the UK Sport funded body that will hear both sides of the story.

His argument looks pretty clear cut but as for the blazer brigade in charge of the sport, I’m rather hoping that their defence that ‘he’s not our cup of tea’ gets laughed out of court.
