ALICANTE HOSPITAL is the temporary home for one of their tiniest residents; Ellizeah Hilton, who was born 13 weeks early and is presently in their Intensive Care Unit receiving the best of care. by Keith Nicol ELLIZEAH WAS born on Saturday 26th January by emergency caesarean weighing just 930g (about 2lb) in the ‘Hospital General Universitario de Elche’ in Alicante. After battling for life for eight days she was transferred to ‘Hospital General de Alicante’ for a life saving operation. Parents Zowie Lyons and Sam Hilton were visiting Sam’s mother Allison Treanor on a fiveday mini-break when Zowie was whisked away to hospital to have the baby. A month later, they find themselves stranded in Spain with no money, zero knowledge of Spanish and for a while, without anywhere to stay. However, sometimes things happen in mys-

terious ways and their predicament was picked up by the Manchester Evening News and then in Spain by Denia based charity Grant-a-Wish, who spread the word locally as to the plight of the couple. Zowie and Sam were not allowed to stay overnight in Alicante Hospital and quickly ran out of money. Hearing this, Jody Kirby, founder of Grant A Wish did not hesitate to spring into action and along with one her senior directors they drove south to meet the parents. This action was a godsend to Zowie and
Sam as Jody presented them with a four figure sum, donated by the charity Grant A Wish to help all three get through the next few weeks. For a few days the couple stayed in Elche thanks to the kindness of one local who heard of their dilemma. But this was three hours travel each way so with their donation, they booked themselves into a small hotel in Alicante, which is now just a ten-minute taxi drive away from the hospital. Sam has thus been visiting both girls in his life. The British Consulate in Alicante has been very supportive, making daily calls and helping in whatever why they can. However, they do not have any funds to give to the couple but they are setting aside their restrictions and the documentation for a UK passport for Ellizeah has started. A 2005 revision of the Catastral was nicknamed ‘catastrazo’ or ‘castastrophe’ when land values were estimated with a tenfold increase. IBI bills were sky high but eventually last year the valuations were annulled by the court. LOSS 2013 land values will therefore be based on the 1995 estimates, representing a considerable loss of income for the council. Mayor José Chulvi said: “Now is not the time,” inferring that a new review could be postponed for some years in the future.

The White Tide demands withdrawal of privatisation for Spain’s health cover by Jan Gamm FIFTEEN CITIES around the country, including Valencia and Barcelona, have joined with Madrid in protests against the privatisation of public health. The protests, collectively dubbed ‘The White Tide’ in a nod to the signature white coats worn by many participants, are the result of combined efforts from consumer platforms, health workers and union representatives throughout Spain. One demonstration in Valencia on Sunday attracted around ten thousand supporters requiring the intervention of police to retain control. MANIFESTO A march started at noon from Campanar to Navellos Street and the Plaza de la Virgen where a manifesto against cuts in public health was read out. Demonstrators shouted their opposition not only to the privatisation of the health service but also to the exclusion of health
cover for certain groups and the outrageous delays in payments to pharmacists, many of whom went out of business as a result of being owed unacceptable arrears by the Department of Health. Demands were made for ‘fewer councillors and more doctors’ and union representatives publically deplored the way in which the government has chosen to make savings, by removing support from those groups deemed most vulnerable such as the disabled. THE BEST Throughout all the demonstrations views were expressed that the Spanish Health Service is “one of the best in the world”, now put at risk of being compromised by misguided political reforms that will result in health cover being not only more expensive but also less reliable. During one of the largest turnouts in Barcelona, thousands of people took to the streets bearing placards that read that ‘Health is priceless’ and ‘Stop Cuts’.

El Altet closes runway for 15 minutes for Air Nostrum flight
THE CAPTAIN of an Air Nostrum aircraft called in a ground emergency at Alicante’s El Altet on Tuesday when a failure was detected in the landing gear of flight IB8283 bound for Madrid. The 48 passengers on board were delayed for four hours waiting for a replacement plane,
three choosing to call off their journey as the working day was lost. The disruption forced the El Altet runway to shut down for 15 minutes while the plane was stuck in the header and the diversion of Easyjet, Monarch and Ryanair landing aircraft to Valencia’s Manises Airport.

by Jan Gamm Jet2 Holidays representative Lauren Godfrey was joined by Benidorm’s Mayor, Agustin Navarro; the Councillor for Tourism Gema Amor and the presidents of Hosbec and FeTB, Antonio Mayor and Francisco Delgado at a working meeting to discuss opportunities to increase tourism for Spain’s most successful holiday hot spot. Godfrey confirmed the sale of 530,000 seats for next season with hopes to achieve a 41% increase in tourist packages. Both the Mayor and the Councillor for Tourism were delighted at the news that Jet2 Holidays has
already hired a total of 65 hotels in Benidorm for the high season. In March a co-marketing campaign with Jet2 Holidays will include ten-second TV commercials promoting Benidorm to be broadcast on ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Daybreak: a total of 120 ads to run alongside Jet2 Airways Magazine Jetaway inserts exposed to 20,000 passengers daily on all routes. Jet2 celebrated its tenth anniversary recently and sees the company’s involvement with Benidorm as “very important and significant,” which is no surprise with such spectacular growth experienced in such a short time.
RESEARCHERS FROM Sun Yatsen University in Guangzhou (China) have found that exposure to sunlight may reduce the progression of myopia. The findings were published in the journal ‘Ophthalmology’ following analysis during a clinical trial involving more than 200 children in Denmark aged between 8 and 14 years suffering with Myopia. Over six months with less light per day Myopia progressed by 0.32 diopters on average, while in the sunny summer months the average decline was 0.28 diopters. The research was conducted in Denmark as Danish children spend a great deal of time outdoors in summer and very little in winter due to extreme temperatures.
CREAMA courses start in Javea CREAMA, THE Consortium for Economic Recovery and Activity in the Marina Alta, has opened registration for new training courses at its headquarters in Javea. Due to the pressures of current economic difficulties fees are payable in most cases. However, remaining free courses are English and German (given with the help of foreign resident teachers). There will also be IT courses (Basic Computing; Word; Excel; Surfing and Social Networking - each of 20 - 30 hours at 2€ per hour). There will also be approved training for people who want to get a mandatory professional card for working in construction, and those interested in obtaining a food handler’s card.

New Chief of Police cleaning up Benidorm by Jan Gamm JUAN CARLOS Hernandez Muñoz, the new Chief of Police in Benidorm, who took office at the end of 2012, made an undertaking at his inauguration to reduce crime in the city. In his speech he stressed the importance of residents and tourists “feeling safe” on the streets of the Costa Blanca’s most popular and successful holiday destination, expressing his determination to tighten security by increasing police presence to prevent petty crime and drug trafficking. It seems Muñoz is keeping to his word as RTN readers in Benidorm on
Wednesday witnessed around eight ‘peamen’ being handcuffed and taken into custody. NUISANCE The ‘peamen’ are notorious for harassing tourists and have become a public nuisance on the streets of the Costa Blanca’s most popular holiday destination. They ‘scam’ passers-by into playing ‘hunt the pea’, using three shells, walnuts, cups or bottle caps, one of which ‘hides’ a small pea or soft round ball. The peaman places the pea in full view but then switches the containers at high speed, leaving the player to guess which hides the pea. Bets are
taken, usually on a promise to ‘double your money’. Benidorm’s peamen lurk in all the most popular tourist haunts throughout the city. Their presence is viewed by some to be part of the local colour but in recent years their tactics have become increasingly intrusive to drum up business. And in the hands of a skilled operator, it is not possible for the game to be won, unless of course the operator wants the player to win to encourage higher stakes. Muñoz’ ‘clean-up Benidorm programme’ is expected to produce a significant number of arrests throughout the spring and summer.
Altea fire in home for the elderly A MAN aged 76 has died of burns after a fire swept through a seniors’ ‘assisted housing’ building in Altea in the early hours of Saturday morning. It is thought the fire was caused by a faulty electrical appliance in the victim’s room. Fire fighters evacuated 70 elderly people and five, all women aged between 69 and 91 years, were admitted to the district hospital in Villajoyosa suffering from smoke inhalation. A neighbour alerted emergency services at 3.55am. The evacuees were given shelter at other homes located in Benidorm or collected by relatives. Many of the evacuated residents returned to their homes the following day.

A total of 81 scheduled flights stayed on the ground with 135 operating as normal. Passengers were offered alternative flight arrangements or refunded the cost of their tickets. Taxi driver arrested for kidnapping POLICE ARRESTED a 39year-ol Russian taxi driver in Valencia on Monday for kidnapping one of his clients. Interpol already had a search warrant on the man for a robbery committed in Ukraine. The victim got into his taxi at the train station. The driver did not know how to reach her destination so the client decided to get out. The driver prevented her from doing so and demanded that she pay the entire fare. The woman eventually escaped while the vehicle had momentarily stopped.
Valentine’s Day shootout in Alicante
A VALENTINE’S Day clash between two feuding gypsy families woke up the José Antonio neighbourhood in Alicante at around 5.30pm when a dozen gunshots were fired in a confrontation that sent alarmed residents running into the street in panic. Police arrived at the scene in response to several calls but no arrests were made and luckily no one was injured. The area was cordoned off while shell casings belonging to a 9mm calibre pistol were collected for analysis. Residents claimed that the shots were fired between two men in the street and also from a person on a balcony. Several bullet holes were found in a building on Calle Margarit Dominguez. The incident is likely to be the subject of further police enquiries.

Expats urged to make correct use of EHIC cards
A new campaign that is the result of an innovative partnership between the UK Government’s Department of Health and the Generalitat Valencia, approved by the European Union, is to raise awareness on the use of the UK European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) over the next 15 months. A campaign to explain how the cards should be used was launched in Alicante by David Pennington, Head of the Department of Health’s International Healthcare Team. “Many British citizens living in Spain are confused about how to access state healthcare and many use their EHIC cards when they should be accessing healthcare in another way,” said Pennington. “This campaign explains who can use a UK-issued EHIC and what it is for. It also tells people about other ways to access state healthcare in Spain, depending on their circumstances.” WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW The UK European Health Insurance Card should be used to access medically-necessary state treatment during the course of a temporary stay in Spain. It does not provide access to all state treatment but for those in Spain on a temporary stay it is the correct way to access state healthcare. However, British citizens who mainly live in Spain should change the way they are registered, because for them the UK European Health Insurance Card is not the correct form of health cover (the new EHIC marketing and advertising campaign will explain how to do this). The campaign will also inform administrative staff of the Valencia Health Authority how the UK covers its citizens in Spain and how the UK reimburses Spain for the cost of medical care provided to British citizens.

Additionally, an extensive radio and newspaper advertising campaign will further promote the correct use of EHICs, with
leaflets to be distributed at health centres and public events. Some two million British tourists visit the Valencia region every year and there are an estimated 300,000 British residents in the region represent some 40% of the total in Spain. Although the campaign is taking place in the Valencia area, much of the information is relevant and of interest to British citizens across Spain.

I found this helpful AS I am a Meniere’s Disease sufferer it was interesting to see the article about the Disease in RTN. The Disease became very severe for me in 2010 to 2012, to the point where I could not drive, or go out alone in case I had what they call a ‘spin attack’. One of the most important things is to make sure that the diagnosis is correctly confirmed; which involves a balance test and a calorific test usually performed by a qualified Audiologist. So often the symptoms of the Disease are mimicked by other conditions. What I found helpful was to become a Member of the Meniere’s Society in the UK. So for anyone out there who feels they are suffering from this debilitating disease alone and without any support here is the email address and website of the Society: info@menieres.org.uk www.menieres.org.uk I am glad to say that at the moment I am in remission having eventually had an ear operation. Endless corruption in Spain and ‘Grapes of Wrath’ of its citizens I’VE LOST track of the exact number of cases of corruption among Spanish politicians or other ‘public servants’. The worst is that the average Spanish man or woman in the street is now so used to it that they almost automatically accept their daily dose of political scandal with resignation. The word ‘transparency’ recently coined by Obama enjoyed a certain amount of popularity here also until Spain’s voters discovered time after time that their political ‘representatives’, so firmly entrenched in their posts due to the notorious ‘closed lists’ had become ‘mentirosos patológicos’: so much so that the word ‘transpar-
ency’ might as well be eliminated from the Academía Real’s recent edition of Spanish Dictionary. The present situation would be worthy of a Marx Brothers movie if it weren’t so tragic: both major political parties behaving like two immature kids scrapping tooth and nail in the schoolyard. I humbly but urgently suggest that Spain’s politicians take a page from Obama’s honesty before its irate voters abandon the polling stations like rats abandoning a sinking ship. P.S. Hit them where it hurts I HAVE read that No Smoking laws are being ignored by many, and Murcia is one of the worst areas where smoking has actually increased! Smoking is banned in hospitals including the grounds but I have come back from an appointment at the new Santa Lucia hospital, Cartagena, where yet again a blind eye is turned to this problem, the worst area being outside the cafeteria. Last year I wrote to the chief executive suggesting that the No Smoking notices should be larger and displayed more prominently with persistent offenders fined and warning messages displayed on information screens in waiting areas. Result: no action whatsoever. I received a polite letter stating that they were
committed to a healthy non-smoking hospital, reminding me that smoking is entrenched in the Spanish culture and to alter the situation would take some time. I agree it will be difficult but no action is being taken at all. Having been a nurse, I am the first to admit that a hospital is a very stressful place both for staff and patients, but that is no reason to ignore the law. If I were a surgeon, I would hesitate to offer surgery to a patient who is going to smoke and undo all my good work at taxpayers’ expense. And before anyone pipes up that the government gets lots of tax from smokers, I would remind them that caring for people with smoking related conditions costs twice as much as the tax gathered from smokers.
Within the present austerity people seem to have no trouble finding money for cigarettes, which one might think would be better spent on food and other life essentials. The only way the law will prevail will be if offenders are hit where it hurts - in the pocket. Other offenders who need a short, sharp shock are bar and cafe owners who put up awnings, closed in on all three sides. This creates an enclosed space in which smoking is banned, defeating the object! People then have a smoke filled area through which they must walk to get out and the staff has no option but to endure working there. Since so many are flouting this law I can only assume the Police are also turning a blind eye. Ellen Rose
Never the same again Totally non-political Don’t bother
FOLLOWING KEITH Nicol’s article on ‘Vandalism or Art’ (RTN Feb 15th -21st), I can agree that reporting signs and acts of spray paint vandalism to the police can have positive results. One of the ‘Listed’ monuments, that may be seen dotted around the countryside that had been spray-painted by the same low-life A/C company that was clearly evident in Keith’s picture. I took a photograph of the damaged brickwork, submitted to the
local police and the mayor in Campoverde, and within two weeks council staff had painted out the graffiti. The handmade bricks will never be as they were but it looks a lot better than it was. THE RECENT dismissal of Pedro Mancebo, ex-Councillor for the Coast, by the mayor Monserrate Guillen, was quickly followed by the dismissal of Denise Wesserling who worked in the Orihuela Costa Town Hall as co-ordinator for Foreign Residents. It has been reported in the press that she was removed because of her allegiance to the CLR Party. Civil Servants have to work for the government of the day. Denise worked in the Town Hall and was totally non-political in her job. Who Denise supported politically out of work was her decision in what is supposed to be a free democratic society. I READ with interest the article describing how Jacqui Cotterill is going to the European Union in the hope of securing voting rights. Someone should tell her not to bother! My husband and I are both registered to vote in the UK but at the last two general elections our voting papers arrived on the day before the election making it impossible to return them in time to be counted. Fire fighters refuse to help banks with evictions FIRE FIGHTERS in Valencia have refused to become involved in evictions on humanitarian grounds.

by Jan Gamm At a spontaneous and emotionally charged meeting of the UGT fire fighters’ union on Wednesday, Deputy Caballero Paco said: We are here to help people, not to bail out banks,” adding, “Our job is to save lives and avoid risks, not to get involved in legal issues.” Fifty fire fighters participated in the meeting and were united in their angry displeasure at being asked to participate in such services. Alberto Puchalt, head of CSI-F said “The general feeling was that to refuse to assist in such actions on the grounds of humanity is a form of conscientious objection.”
Fire fighters were prompted to make an announcement regarding the issue of evictions when they were asked to assist in the eviction of an octogenarian in A Coruna on Tuesday. They attended the scene of the eviction but promptly refused to act. Steps are being taken to request that the courts refrain from sending requests to fire fighters to attend evictions in the future. Their actions come on the heels of a similar veto by Spanish locksmiths in December 2012 and January 2013. The message is clear to Spanish banks wishing to execute evictions: Do your own dirty work.

Lucky escape from The Ciudad de la avalanche for Másmóvil’s CEO Luz springs a leak MEINRAD (MAINI) Spenger, CEO and co-founder of Spanish mobile phone operator Másmóvil, recently decided to take a welldeserved break from work on a skiing holiday to St Moritz in the Swiss Alps. He had recently led the company into the finals of the European Business Awards, achieving the Ruban D’Honneur status in the Customer Focus Category - he could have never imagined he was to be saved from a mountain slope by using a Másmóvil phone! Maini and two of his friends were skiing along one of the tracks when a huge avalanche struck, burying everything in its path, including the three friends. Dragged 800 metres down the slope, they suffered significant injuries with two of the friends completely buried by snow. Maini was trapped, but not completely buried, and eventually managed to free his left arm to reach for his Másmóvil phone, which despite being in the Alps had good
enough coverage to phone the rescue services, who arrived by helicopter some 15 minutes later. The friends were flown to the nearest hospital where they were treated for hypothermia and numerous injuries. Maini is currently recovering back home in Spain, where he tells everyone who wants to hear, never to set foot out of the door without having a reliable mobile phone! The police take a stand against internet bullying by Jan Gamm THE LOCAL police in Benidorm are making a concentrated stand against internet bullying and poor conduct, with the aim of lecturing more than 1,000 students in local schools over the next few weeks on internet safety for minors, peer pressure, bad behavioural trends and general responsibility. Benidorm’s mayor, Agustín Navarro, accompanied by the Councillor for Education, Ruben Martinez; Public Security Councillor José Vicente Marcet; Police Chief Juan Fuertes and Director of the IES Mediterrània school Luis Gonzalez attended one of these talks on ‘Juvenile responsibility’, accompanaied by coaching expert Isabel Montiel. DANGERS In total more than 30 lectures are planned for schools and colleges throughout the city. The content for discussion will also include
information on the dangers of becoming involved in drugs and alcohol as well as internet and social networking addiction. The local chief of police confirmed that the ugly practise of ‘cyberbullying’, often via social networks, is growing at an alarming rate, prompting the departments of Public Safety and Education to maintain an effective programme of awareness. SUPERVISION The objectives of these ‘not-on-my-patch’ police talks are to communicate the potential dangers posed for minors using the internet, especially with regard to passing on personal information and photographs online to a third party and browsing unsuitable material; appropriate use of webcams and other pitfalls. THEY CAME and boarded-up that giant temple to televisual pleasures yesterday. Yup folks, to quote Monty Python our local Blockbusters, purveyors of video, DVD, CD, games etc, “…is no more; it has ceased to be; it is an ex-blockbusters.” The town centres of Britain have altered quite a bit in the last few credit-crunching years but here in Tamworth the town centre now resembles a not-too-skilled bare knuckle boxer: lots of gaps where teeth once were. In other words it’s all gotten a bit ‘gappy’. I don’t think even Beirut in the height of its troubles suffered such a dearth of downtown retailers. First there was Woolworth, followed by Virgin (or whatever it was called in its dying days) and then a sad procession of household names all dragging their sad bottoms out of town. Even McDonalds hot-footed it from the high street – yeah, I kid you not, even the
ubiquitous MickyD’s has buggered orf! SILVER LINING… Mind you, I did get a bit of bargain this week from dear old HMV as it thrashed around in its death throes. I got the entire third and fourth series of ‘Breaking Bad’ for under a tenner (If you’re not acquainted with Breaking Bad yet, it’s a series well worth a few minutes of your time). Anyway, the dear old place looked like a garage rummage sale as the once proudly full shelves were ransacked. It’s strange to reflect on our changing shopping habits and I suppose I’m as

guilty as the rest for HMV’s departure. Back in the day (as people irritatingly say) I’d rush into town to buy the latest albums essential to my life but nowadays I’m happy to wait the few days, nay even a week, for Play.com or Amazon to send them to my door (and obviously, save a few coppers into the bargain). It’s a reversal of the way we used to deal with our photography. Back then you’d be prepared to have to wait a few days for the developing of your prints (or a week if you used BonusPrint) but now we want our photos instantly. It’s a case of, “Quick kids in the car, let’s get down to ASDA and print this lot up.” As I’ve drifted onto the subject of photography, I think a moment’s respect is due to Jessop’s. Is it really only a month since they passed away? Another gap in the town centre’s mouth…! I suppose you can blame it on the march of progress (e.g. phones that do almost everything except make the toast) plus T’internet and the rise of DIY shopping. Makes you wonder how the travel agents are managing to survive when you can book your holiday requirements from the cosy comfort of home. I bet even the CO-OP undertakers are getting worried that we might start DIY funeral arraigning next. Then there’ll be

Readers will no doubt be familiar with the upcoming Fallas celebrations in the region of Marina Alta and Safor. The incredibly impressive paper maché figures depict political and social satire in exquisite and very often raunchy detail. They are created by local teams throughout the year, before being put to flame on the night of Las Fallas. The figures are many months in the making, and can be several stories high. In play this year are 2,900€ to be divided among the three winning teams from of Denia, Pego, Oliva and Gandia. Portal de la Marina has, for the second consecutive year, given its support
to this very important local tradition. Just as in 2012, they have launched a competition on their Facebook page specifically for the Fallas in Denia, Pego, Oliva and Gandia. However, this year there will only be one prize per town, to help motivate contestants in each town and avoid all the prizes going to just one town. The competition will be run through a Facebook application where ‘falleras and falleros’ have to leave a ‘Visca La Falla’ (Viva la Falla! in Spanish) indicating the name and location of their chosen Fallas team. Then leave your name, town and vote with the

Choice of plants for planting by

THIS YEAR plants in gardens must really wonder what season they are in. During the past month we have experienced plus 27º down to 3º and recognising that the worst frost during our living in Spain was in March 2005 when we experienced -15º we could still have a cold night or two. Today almonds and plums are forming and apricots are in flower. Pruning today peaches apricots and tangerines will follow soon, if a frost does not nip them in bud. In the flower/shrub beds Salvias, Hibiscus, Bignonias and Leonotis are still in flower while Strelitzias, Rock Roses and Margeritas are in bud, to open soon if we have the first frostless winter/early spring for years. So although garden centres are stocking up with tempting spring annuals and perennials recognise that many of the plants have been raised in conditions very different to your garden – constantly warm, moist greenhouse climates, fed hourly and spayed weekly or more often against bugs. So be patient. Wait until the microclimate of your garden is ready for spring plants. Like our articles our books such as ‘Your Garden in Spain – From Planning to Planting and Maintenance’ are written to help you realise the realities of gardening in Spain and other Mediterranean climate situations and not waste money. And it is not only temperatures that stress your plants. If you have shallow soil plants, including trees, can do well for a few years and then stunt and even die. So think about building raised beds with deeper and richer soil into which to replant existing plants and plant new ones. Recognise that even if you chose plants appropriate to your microclimate and soils, the soil may well change from one part of the garden to another, and the performance of plants also
depend on how you planted them in terms of soil conditions and full sun, semi shade, dappled shade or full shade positions. Also, while you complete your winter cutback and clean up, do review your garden and make notes of what improvements need to made ready for the coming spring and summer. IN RESPECT TO PLANTS YOUR BASIC CHOICES ARE TO HAVE: Only local native wild plants: With a slice of a mountain side you may have a good collection on day one. Others can be rescued from building sites and road widening, purchased from Cultidelta near Delta Ebro in the south of Cataluña or grown from seeds purchased from Semillas Silvestres based in Cordoba. And of course a few varieties will be available from some garden centres. Plants totally suitable for Spain and grown in Spain, often in the open air: These days perhaps only a third of what are offered in garden centres. Plants totally suitable for Spain but imported from overseas hothouses: But being forced and often large specimens they can need several years of constant care to establish root systems that enable them to survive. Plants partially suitable for Spain: These include Northern European annuals and perennials and subtropical /tropical plants most suitable respectively for the semi temperate areas inland of true Mediterranean climate conditions of coastal hotspots that never get frost. Before you make final choices walk the local countryside, visit local gardens/botanical gardens open to the public – will include a list next week - walk round the neighborhood and local parks and study the possible choices of plants described in ‘Your Garden in Spain – From Planning to Planting and Maintenance’. A book can save you facing garden disasters and unnecessary high replacement plant bills during the next couple of years. Then of course there is the choice and mixing of colours as many plants have several choices of flower colour and some have choices of leaf colour. Read Chapter 2.6 ‘Painting with Plants’

protests in November 2011 where a reported two million people attended a day of action. Things have not improved and will only get worse. The bigger the company, the bigger the debt... The maths are simple: there are more people retiring, voluntary or not. Workers that have retired are putting more strain on the schemes, as they are retiring earlier and tending to live longer due to improved medical practices. So this means schemes have to pay out more and for longer. On the other hand there are fewer people working or they are employed
on a short term contract basis so obviously less money is going into the pension pot. I WATCH the rate as much as I can because I want to get the maximum return for my currency but deciding when to trade is very difficult as the rate can move very quickly. How do I know when is the best time to exchange my currency at the rate I want? YOU ARE not alone! Because of the recent turmoil in the financial market and the extreme volatility of currency it is extremely difficult to judge when to trade and if you use a bank, making sure you get the rate you want. As an example, the average Inter Bank exchange rate from Sterling to Euro for January 2013 was 1.195. However, the rate actually fluctuated from a low of 1.165 to a high of 1.231 throughout the month. Therefore, the potential difference of the rate you could have traded was just under 7 cents, equating to a significant saving or loss depending on which rate you took. Tracking the rate yourself is time consuming and unless you monitor throughout the time the market is open often fruitless. You then have to ensure that if you see the rate you want your bank is (a) open and (b) able to give you that rate. This is a key reason why more and more clients are turning to a currency specialist such as Moneycorp that are able to offer a range of services allowing you the

As currency markets are always on the move, your order is monitored constantly. You will be kept informed and make sure that levels are amended in response to current market conditions. Do step children have any bonus or reductions for the purposes of Inheritance Tax? Or are they considered as ‘non relatives’ or ‘third party?’ MY HUSBAND has three children from a previous marriage who are like my own children but I have no actual children of my own. I was told that since they are not my descendants, if my stepchildren inherit from me they will pay a huge Inheritance Tax bill, twice the normal, because they are not considered my relatives. Is that true? I believe that what you have been told should be clarified. The Law 29/1987 of the Inheritance and Gift Tax (IHT), in its Article 20 recognises certain reductions to ascendants and descendants by affinity, i.e. stepchildren, parents in law, etc... This reduction, according to Inheritance National Tax rules is of 7,993.46€. Also we can roughly say that the stepchildren pay approximately 59% more in the inheritance tax bill than if they were your own children. Please notice that normally non-relatives or strangers pay more than double. Either way it is true that the concept of relative by affinity and its tax regulation is quite problematic. For example, it has been understood by the Tax Authority,

that the reduction stated above will only apply whilst your link with the parent remains, that means that, in your case, if the father dies or you get divorced your step children will not keep their ‘affinity relationship’ with you. Therefore according to the administration, if your husband dies before you or you get divorced and your stepchildren inherit from you, they will not be eligible for the reductions stated, as they will only apply if, when they inherit from you, their father is still alive and married to you. Despite the above theory, there is some debate, since the Spanish Civil Code does not indicate that the affinity relationship terminates with death. The High
Court of Justice of Murcia and Asturias has followed this line of reasoning and ruled understanding the theory to be erroneous. Therefore, we can say that your stepchildren will be able to enjoy the said tax reduction if they inherit from you whilst you are still married to their father. However, in the event that their father dies before you, and they inherit from you, the taxman may understand that the tax reduction is not applicable, although there are legal arguments to fight that decision. THE PUSH for the Padron has been highlighted and promoted this year by Giles Paxman, the current British Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Spain. by Keith Nicol Through meetings and workshops in Alicante, the Ambassador has been promoting this vital aspect of Spanish statistical life to the thousands of expatriates from the UK, who might find themselves in a residential wilderness, if they are not registered in the correct manner. One of the more progressive municipalities in promoting Padron registration is the Urnbanization in La Marina, whose population far outnumbers that of the ruling village of San Fulgencio. San Fulgencio’s official population is now around 12,500 people, however, the ‘real’ population of the area, based upon such factors as water and electricity consumption and garbage removal, possibly places the floating residential status of the region at about double this figure! According to the The National Statistics Institute ( INE ) Census, San Fulgencio had a population of 12,529 inhabitants, of which almost 80% are
of foreign nationality, representing the highest percentage of foreign residents throughout Spain and one of the largest in the EU. It is the only Spanish city where English is the language spoken by the majority of the population as there are officially 6, 325 British residents followed by 1,459 German but only about 2,000 Spanish nationals! June 2011 brought in a new coalition government in San Fulgencio made up of eight conservative Partido Popular councillors and one PIPN councillor. Scottish PIPN councillor Jeff Wisniewski now holds the position as Councilor for Urbanizations and is San Fulgencio’s Deputy Mayor and he is very proactive in trying to get the best services possible for the expat community. La Marina now has its own satellite Town Hall and beside this, you find Jeff’s office, which has become a local drop in centre for advice and information. The office deals with all manner of enquires but especially paperwork issues. Putting your name on the Padron
has never ben easier and all you need is your Passport, a copy of your escatura (or a notarized copy of the owner, if you are renting) and your NIE, if you have one. Head down to the Town Hall and registrar your name on the Padron. While you are there, you will be asked if you wish to be included on the electoral role, so if you’d like to have your say in both local Spanish Elections and European Elections, please let them know, and this will entitle you to a vote. Jeff’s office also has a food bank, to help the needy and homeless, and anyone wishing to drop off non perishable supplies are encouraged to do so. Every other Friday, Age Concern can be found there to answer any questions and it’s the place go regarding information on cultural performances, fiestas, emergency procedures and all things official in the community. Many couples cannot afford to get married and buy a house
A UK high court judge claims that the inhibitive cost of housing is seriously undermining traditional marriage because people cannot afford a home and a wedding. Sir Paul Coleridge says that many couples settle for ‘other arrangements’ more prone to break-up, taking the option of buying a home and foregoing a wedding until long after children come along. He added: “Many people are forced to delay marriage while entering into significant financial commitments and starting families while they are ill-equipped to manage the risks entailed.” In Spain couples tend to get married and ‘live with family’ as a mortgage continues to be difficult to secure. However, many Spanish couples are now taking advantage of opportunities offered by ‘rent with a view to buy’ options arranged by local councils.

British banks: Watchdog accuses them of gambling your nest eggs JUST WHEN you thought it might be safe to dip your toe back into the water and start using the British Banks for investment advice again they have been accused of giving poor and misleading advice and gambling the hard earned savings of their customers by selling thousands of risky investment plans. Yet again these big institutions are putting profits before anything else; it seems that still ‘greed rules’ within the Banking world’s culture and this is going to be hard to stop. It is the latest damaging revelation as they desperately try to restore their reputations in the wake of the interest rate rigging scandal. One Major name on the High Street and across Europe has been accused of recommending investments that were far more risky than customers should have been offered: could this be because these investments earned the Bank more commission I wonder? This Bank is now facing fines totaling millions of pounds and compensation payouts after
being referred to the City watchdog’s serious investigations unit. Although the FSA it is not expected to name the worst offenders, a number of big names have already made changes to their sales staff. On 7th December, Spanish-owned Santander suspended its 800 investment advisers. Many have been sent on an ‘intensive’ retraining programme. Santander refused to confirm whether it had been warned by the FSA. Inequality rears its ugly head
WE ALL know how difficult it can be to work your way through small print. Who actually does? OFTEN WRITTEN in legal terms, and as the name suggests, in very small letters, it is unintelligible to the majority of us. So, no wonder it caught some people out when they agreed their mortgages. The clause was hidden within the agreed loan variable rate and was very difficult for the contracting customers to pick up on. We all know that we should read the small print but the majority of us rely upon being informed of any major conditions that we should be aware of. Unfortunately not everyone was. The clause states that even though the rate of the mortgage might be linked to the Euribor there is a limit on how far the rate might fall: in other words preventing mortgage holders from benefiting from a really low Euribor. What makes it worse is that this capping of a limit at the bottom end is not matched at the top end. There is no
accompanying clause ceiling so, if the Euribor should suddenly climb steeply, those same clients who were prevented from gaining the benefit at the lower end are not protected from a high Euribor. Where there is a clause ceiling, it tends to be so high (8%, 9% or even as high as 20%) that it is never likely to be reached. What’s particularly disturbing is that the banks were well aware of all this when they set up these mortgages. They knew at the point of sale that they were not in the best interests of the clients they were selling them to. What can you do? Although there has been some discussion about this in Parliament it has not resulted in any legislation. However, the amount that might be lost over a period of years is quite substantial and it is worth mortgage holders considering taking legal action against their bank in order to change their mortgage and shake this expensive clause from their contract.

Women must work 82 more days per year for the same pay as men
FOLLOWING SURVEY results released by the UGT on Equal Pay Day, the Secretary for Equality, Almudena Fontecha, has warned that wage gaps between men and women performing the same job are widening. Spanish women have to work 82 more days per year than their male counterparts for the same remuneration, the figure equating to a 22.55% gap. Last year that gap was 22%. The number of women entering the job market in the last year has increased, but this has been in part-time jobs that are more precarious and attract lower pay. It was stressed that women are earning lower wages because better paid jobs are being given to men with more secure contracts that provide better pensions and benefits.

HI AUNTY: I’m running Windows 7 Ultimate on my Acer Aspire laptop. On attempting to open some attachments received with incoming Emails I receive a pop up box containing the following message: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. I can’t seem to work my way round this one: any ideas, Aunty? Many thanks, Pip Aunty says: This is a common problem and is usually to do with a setting just not working correctly, and the system cannot identify what programme it should use to open the attachment. In the majority of cases, putting the settings back to their ‘default’ can solve the problem. 1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. 3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Reset button. 4. On the Programs tab, under Internet programs, click Set Programs, then ‘Set your Default Programs’, select your email program and click ‘Set this program as Default’: Repeat for Internet Explorer. 5. Click OK and close the dialogs. Note: You need to set Internet Explorer as default and verify the problem is fixed. If you prefer a different browser, you can set it as default later.
Formatting data HOLA AUNTY: With a TDT Digibox that has a recording facility via a USB port is it possible to attach a 1TB external drive to this to record on? Also, some boxes have minimum and maximum drive size limitations. Also, using Win XP pro - a memory stick has lost its format and data - not bothered about the data - but how to re-format the stick as using the format facility it states that windows is not able to format it (after doing about 90% of it) Brian.

Google search, download, install, run, and follow the options to format the USB Drive. Of course with these format tools, make sure you have selected the correct drive you want to format! You do not want to format the drive containing your Windows!

A golden hue around Hugh I REMEMBER seeing Hugh Laurie playing Prince George in the third series of Blackadder and thinking how convincing he was as a bumbling fool, which proved to me he had moved on from his work as a buffer for Stephen Fry in ‘Jeeves and Wooster’. As most of you are now aware Hugh has reached the pinnacle of his acting talent having wiped the floor with all the other drama shows last year with his enigmatic performance as Dr Gregory House in the hugely successful US TV show ‘House’. Now one of the top celebrity gossip publications in the US, The Hollywood Reporter, has apparently been spreading rumours that Hugh baby has agreed
to play a nasty villain opposite George Clooney in an upcoming Sci-Fi movie called Tomorrowland. It could well be that the rumour-mongers are bigging it up, but the same newspaper has suggested that the new film will be similar to Steven Spielberg’s classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind. That’s big talk is that: one extremely strong similarity is that the script of Tomorrowland is most definitely about UFO’s. Since moving on from House last year Hugh has had countless offers from across the film and TV world, and has just completed a slightly surprising choice as Mr Pip in a reworking of Charles Dickens
‘Great Expectations’. He perhaps took on the role to re-ground himself after the bizarre drug-addicted doctor character he played in House and now it seems he is about to become Mr Mega-Nasty! There is no doubt in my mind that Hugh Laurie is one of the finest actors Britain has produced in many a year, and maybe if he pops over to the Costa Calida for a plate of paella and chips I might get him in for a chat on my programme on Radio Nova.

All had gone well earlier on in the show with Tim having performed a duet with his lovely wife Faith Hill, but as the evening drew to a close and the various dignitaries took to the stage, famous peeps like Sting and Sir Elton John, it all started to go downhill for our hero. Let me bring you up to speed with Tim’s very own words. “I was standing on the end of the stage and I’m trying to hide a little bit and Bruce says, ‘Tim, come and sing the second verse to Glory Day’’ with me’… a song that is as good as Bruce Springsteen’s anthem I might add … and yep you got it! Poor Tim forgot the words but had the courage to later share it with us when he said: “I came in late then the teleprompter was going and I couldn’t find my words and so I just had to laugh and hand it back to Bruce ... It was pretty embarrassing.” I’m sure the guys hung out afterwards and had a brew or three and a good old chuckle, however, with notoriety generally having a positive effect in the world of showbiz, chances are Tim McGraw’s album sales might well be on the increase.
Willis on women
IT COULD well be I’m in the minority having never been a fan of the Die Hard movies, and to see that Bruce Willis has made yet another episode of his gun tottin ‘n car poppin’ crapolla defies reason. If you saw him in ‘The Sixth Sense’ you might get where I’m coming from, a movie that continues to ride high in the video listings. He was also in a run of ‘Friends’ and was brilliant playing the love-interest to Jennifer Anniston’s ‘Rachael’. I saw the man on the One Show last week, and of all things, the subject of women came up. He was extremely kind when talking about his ex-wife Demi Moore and called his three daughters “fabulous young women,” but it was what he said about the lady in Buck House that I loved the best. His words were “I’m a big fan of the Queen and all the Royals, but I like that Queen, she’s as tough as nails…a sweetheart.” Nice one Brucie!

Step by Step Spanish - 20 WE ARE now looking at how to express commands or orders which are addressed to more than one person. In other, more grammatical, words, we are learning about the second person plural (vosotros) imperative form. I GAVE a few examples at the end of the last article as follows: “venid aquí”; “leed el texto”; “dejad de gritar”; “abrid los libros en la página 8” These are orders or commands that a teacher might give to a group of children or some other kind of leader might give to participants in any activity. It is also the form a parent would use to talk to more than one of their offspring. Basically, as you can see, we have replaced the “r” at the end of the infinitive form with a “d”. So, a teacher might say “escribid en vuestros cuadernos”; an activity leader might say “escuchad atentamente” and a parent might say “dejad de hacer tanto ruido”. I saw another example on the telly yesterday. The ex-pope said to his assembled followers “Rezad por mí” “pray for me” from the verb “rezar” to pray. As far as the pronunciation is concerned, as the letter “d” is a much softer sound in Spanish than in English, you may be forgiven for actually confusing it with the infinitive “r” ending. In practice the two forms sound remarkably similar, especially when followed by other words as in the examples already given. In previous articles we have learnt about reflexive verbs, and they popped up again an article or two ago when learning the singular (tú) imperative. “Quítate el abrigo” (take off your coat) is a command using the reflexive verb “quitarse” - to take off. “Ponte las gafas” (put on your glasses) is the same thing, using the reflexive verb “ponerse” – to put on. As we have seen, we can replace “el abrigo” and “las gafas” with object pronouns like this: “Quítatelo” “póntelas”.
Now then, I hear you ask, how do we give these kinds of orders, using reflexive verbs, addressing the plural “vosotros” form instead of the singular “tú” form? Well, there’s the theory and then there’s the practice. The theory is that we drop the “d” from the verb (with the exception of the verb “ir”) and then add the reflexive pronoun. Like this: “cállate” (tú form meaning “be quiet!) “callaos” (vosotros form meaning be quiet, made up of “callad” plus “os”, dropping the letter “d”. Try screaming it at the neighbours’ kids “¡¡¡CALLAOS!!!” The accent incidentally goes on the last but one syllable which is the second “a”, like this: “callAos”. However, (there always has to be a “however” doesn’t there?) for reasons to do with ease of speech and changes in fashion and usage, many Spanish speakers insert the letter “r” between the verb and the pronoun, like this “CALLAROS”. This variation is technically incorrect but has now become so widespread that it is considered acceptable. Another example is the verb “ir” which is slightly different as I have mentioned. To go is “ir” and “irse” to go away. The singular imperative of “ir” is “ve” (go!) and of “irse” is “vete” (Go away!). In the plural, the imperative of “ir” is “id”. In this case we have to keep the “d” giving us “idos” but you will just as often hear “iros” – the order to more than one person to get lost. I’ll leave you to think of a context in which you would want to use it. I can feel you glazing over on this one, and I think I’m slightly glazing over myself so I’ll leave it there for today.

Asthma and its treatment ASTHMA IS a common condition affecting almost 10% of the population, characterised as intermittent, reversible difficulty in breathing caused by narrowing of the airways, inflammation and excessive mucus. There are a number of triggers which can initiate an attack such as allergy, cold air, exertion (e.g. exercise), infection and stress. The main symptoms are: shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing (especially at night and early morning) and a feeling of tightness in the chest. The aim of treatment is to keep the condition under control so as to minimise the effects on the sufferers’ lifestyle as much as possible. This is achieved using an on-going stepwise approach in order to match the treatment to the severity of the condition: the aim is to reduce the number of asthma attacks to three or less per week or no more than one night time episode per week.
Mild asthma can often be controlled sufficiently by the use of short acting beta-2 agonist inhalers (e.g. salbutamol = Ventolin™ or terbutaline = Bricanyl™). These act by relaxing the muscle in the airways causing them to open. They act immediately but can cause side effects such as shaking or tremor. Unfortunately, in most cases, additional drugs are required to achieve adequate control and the next step is to add a steroid inhaler (such as beclometasone = Becotide™ or budesonide = Pulmicort™). These act by reducing the inflammatory response in the airways and can be very effective if used regularly. They must be used for several days initially before reaching their full effect. Low doses have few side effects, but can cause oral thrush so rinsing the mouth with water after each use is advised. Higher doses can result in typical steroid side effects of; weight gain, lowering the immune system (leading to infections), glaucoma and acne. More severe asthma may require other forms of treatment if high dose inhaled steroids are still insufficient to control symptoms. The next step is to introduce a long acting beta agonist (LABA) inhaler (salmeterol = Serevent™ or formoterol = Oxis™). These act in the same way as the short acting types, but their actions lasts for several hours and are delayed. They do NOT give immediate relief and so mustn’t be used for acute attacks. There was some concern after a large study found that people using LABAs were more likely to suffer from severe asthma that required hospitalisation
or caused death. It is very important to use these products correctly and in combination with other treatments, never alone. It is imperative that any worsening of asthma symptoms are reported and treated quickly. If asthma symptoms are still troublesome the next step is to add oral medication, either; a leukotriene receptor antagonist (Montelukast = Singulair™), theophylline = Uniphylline™ or a beta 2 agonist tablet (salbutamol = Ventolin™). The last step in treating unresponsive asthma is to add the oral steroid tablet prednisolone. This is often used for short periods of 5 to 10 days for asthma flair ups, such as may occur with a chest infection. Long term treatment is associated with a number of complications and patients should be monitored for: high blood pressure, osteoporosis, cataracts, adrenal suppression, diabetes and high blood fats. The regular use of asthma drugs saves lives but it is important to use them correctly. If you have difficulty using the normal pressurised inhaler, then using a spacer device or a different type of inhaler (powder inhaler or breathe activated inhaler) may improve treatment tremendously. If asthma symptoms worsen or reliever inhalers fail to have their normal effect, medical advice must be sought without delay. Emergency treatment with nebulised drugs, oxygen and steroid injection are not uncommon and is often avoidable if the worsening symptoms are reported early. In the UK alone three people die every day from asthma and it has been estimated that 75% of hospital emissions for asthma could be avoided. Asthmatics should have their condition and treatment monitored regularly and their medication adjusted accordingly. Wheelchair-bound Jose and his canine pals are frequently seen outside the indoor market but police threatened to take blondecoloured dog Chippie away because she did not have a pet passport and microchip. And when expats heard of the situation they collected money to have the pet made legal and keep him with Jose and his other dog, Blackie. A royal connection By Jack Troughton TALENTED FLOWER demonstrator Beryl Cotton will be welcomed by the Marina Alta and Costa Blanca Floral Club on Thursday 28th February on a visit “not to be missed”. Beryl has been a master florist for over 30 years and has helped with floral displays in Westminster Abbey and has also enjoyed the honour of creating a bouquet for the Queen. A past director of the NAFAS, she also helped arrange the flowers in the Abbey for the historic visit of Pope Benedict in 2010. Her theme for her visit La Senieta, Moraira, is “I Dreamed a Dream’ and she says: 2I love flowers, they give me so much pleasure.” Anyone wanting to share her pleasure is welcome to the demonstration. Creamy moussaka MOUSSAKA IS one of those classic dishes that everyone has tasted on Greek holidays, but very few people cook it for themselves. The principal ingredient is aubergine and the Greeks would use minced lamb. This is my version using minced beef and the topping is a classic Béchamel sauce smothered with cheese. • 2-3 large aubergines, sliced into rings about 1cm thick • 500g minced beef or lamb • 2 medium onions, coarsely chopped • 1tsp dried mixed herbs • A 400g can of chopped tomatoes • 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped • Olive oil • Salt and pepper • 50 g grated cheese For the Béchamel sauce • 400 ml milk • 10 whole black peppercorns • A few parsley stalks • A small piece of onion • A bay leaf • 40g butter • 25g plain flour • ½ tsp grated nutmeg 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. 2. Season the sliced aubergine with plenty of salt and pepper. Add a good measure of oil to a large frying pan and fry the aubergines for 3-4 minutes on each side until they begin to brown. (You may need to do this in batches). Set aside. 3. In the same frying pan, cook the onion and minced beef until the meat is just brown. Add the mixed herbs, garlic and tomatoes and heat until bubbling. Season with salt and pepper and set

aside while you make the Béchamel sauce. 4. In a small saucepan, gently heat the milk with the peppercorns, parsley stalks, onion and bay leaf. Allow to simmer for a few minutes then strain the milk into a jug and discard the other ingredients. Melt the butter in the pan then remove from the heat and stir in the flour until you have a thick paste. Add the milk a little at a time, stirring all the while until you have a smooth sauce. Return the pan to the heat and whisk until the mixture thickens. Remove from the heat and stir in the nutmeg.
5. Now it’s time to assemble the dish. Place half the fried aubergine in the bottom of a shallow ovenproof dish, then cover with the minced beef mixture. Add the rest of the aubergines in a layer, then spread the Béchamel sauce over the top. Sprinkle with the grated cheese and then bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes. Serve immediately with crusty bread and a crisp green salad. Serves: 4 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes

New choir on the block
by Jack Troughton MAKING AN exciting debut on 2nd March in the church at Rafol d’Almunia is the Costa Blanca’s newest choir Music Unlimited. As the name suggests, the group performs music of all kinds – from 16th Century motets through to modern close-harmony arrangements. Music Unlimited is made up of experienced singers from along the coast and the choir was founded and is led by Joanna Baldwin, musical director of the English
Choir and other musical groups, as well as being a stage [performer and soloist in her own right. Jo said: “I feel proud to direct such a lovely group of singers and friends and I am excited by the prospect of our first public performance.” The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets are 10€ on the door. The CATS whiskers By Jack Troughton HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS to Footlights Youth Theatre for producing the magical spectacle of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS last week. Hugely enjoyable, from the off this vibrant show had ‘smash hit’ written all over it – a triumph for each and every one of the young cast, the band and back stage crew. Inspired costumes, wigs and makeup brought a wonderful palette of colour to Calpe’s Casa de Cultura stage – at times the action was so fast it was almost like watching one of the Costa Blanca’s renowned firework displays. Almost incredibly this was Footlights Youth Theatre’s first production. However, given the talent on stage, it was no surprise most of the youngsters have been treading the boards for some time in a variety of stage and dance schools. CATS is based on the poetry of TS Eliot found in ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’, Lloyd Webber putting them to music, with the addition of the hit song Memory. Beware, go to the show and find yourself humming this for days afterwards. And last Thursday night’s opening performance made a little slice of history by becoming the first amateur performance of the show in Spain – and possibly Europe. ADVENTURE The show centres on the annual night time reunion of the ‘Jellicle Cats’ when the felines gather to relate their stories and
Treat for jazz fans By Jack Troughton JAZZ DRUMMER and singer Mike Brain returns to Spain for a one-off gig at Mil Palmeras on Monday 25th February at 8.30pm. A familiar face on the Mediterranean coast as a live and recording musician, he is playing El Pescadito and will be joined by Christine and Roger Eames. Mike’s own jazz style is said to remind music lovers of the velvet tones of legend Mel Torme.
adventures to each other – leading to some energetic and exciting dance routines. All the action takes place on a rubbish dump somewhere in London. Tony Sim built a memorable set on stage – outsized discarded items from the dump created to be in scale with human sized cats. Its design also allowed spectacular surprises to be incorporated into the various routines. And what routines they were. Fantastic choreography from Giovanny Wallis insured there was never a dull moment when the cats were in full flight - a mixture of modern dance, ballet and acrobatics. CATS was very much a team effort. The principals were well cast, fine-honed from rehearsals and were in excellent voice
throughout. Equally impressive was the continual acting by the members of the chorus, always doing little random cat-like things in the background. A purrfect night out and amidst all the caterwauling, it was noted from a piece of on-stage scenery that dogs are from Mars, cats are from Venus. So that’s the difference then! There is a final opportunity to catch this Footlights Youth Theatre production on Saturday 9th March when CATS is performed at the Teatro Municipal de Torrevieja at 8pm. Lone soul
LONELINESS IS a terrible thing, and it is not to be confused with being alone; here are two very different concepts. Loneliness can be felt when you are surrounded by people, and being alone is sometimes a choice or a preference. Alone is a great chance to work with inner guidance and meditation, a chance to establish an inner peace and to contemplate. Whether you talk to yourself, or to God, or to Spirit the message is personal, individual and unique. We are strange in our wants and needs. Sometimes we strive to have time to ourselves, to be alone to complete tasks or to have grateful solitude and time to just be who we are. Then when we get the chance we don’t necessarily like it and are caught up in our own loneliness or an uncomfortable silence. Often what we ask for is not what we really need after all, even if we think that we do. Alone we can talk best to our inner selves. This can spur us on and motivate us, we may even find that we can plan ahead with the clear space of our own thoughts in our own space and under our own conscious control. There will be nobody to change our mind and nothing to stop us but ourselves. Loneliness is a terror. It is the sheer absence of company and fellowship that we may seek. But we are each different in any endurance and must balance this with interpersonal intention. One wonderful experience I had was to travel above

If it’s your birthday this week
the glacier line on a Norwegian Fiord. When I first saw the little shack that I was going to spend 24 hours in I was worried. When I found out there was no internet or telephone at this altitude I became very grateful to hearing the bells around the necks of the grazing goats, appreciative of the river behind the hut which was bathroom and toilet and the source of my supper too. I never was a fisherman, but I became one. On this occasion I became part of the terrain, learnt on my feet and was blissfully alone with my thoughts. There was no pain to talk to myself, and nobody to answer back or to help me to change my mind. The next day I didn’t want to leave, and even after such a short time I had adapted to my surroundings, and shunned the mechanistic world out there. Was I lonely? No….was I alone, No, I felt protected and safe. BUT that is because of my own negotiation with Spirit. My connection over the year’s means that I am never ever lonely, and that I can comfortably be alone too, knowing that I am being taken care of always. There is no interference, and I still call the shots and always will, but just to know that I am never alone is a comfort. There will be times when my own space and my inner peace are what I crave, and other times when I need the company of even strangers in preference to the solitary presence of only me. Dialogue is always there if Spirit are involved and though I may get lost walking the face of this Planet Earth, somehow someone knows the right way and shows me where to go; as even a wrong turn can be a part of spiritual destiny and where I, as a lone old soul, may need to be.

“Make every component as light as possible” WHO STOLE My House? is a great children’s book that my little daughter and I enjoy reading together. It tells the story of a snail who takes off his shell to have a bath and then forgets where he’s left it. A common problem, you can imagine. Nature knows that the weight of a snail’s shell cannot be too heavy otherwise it would have disastrous consequences. The same is true in car production and the engineers at Mazda have given it considerable thought with the Mazda 2, which weighing a tad over 1,000kg almost 100kg lighter than Vauxhall’s Corsa. That sack of spuds’ difference leads the manufacturer to
claim that its 1.3-litre petrol five-door hatchback will return 56mpg as its lighter shell makes for a more efficient vehicle. All sounds good on paper and should mean that the 42 litre tank will see the car travel 500 miles. A lighter body does mean that it feels a bit leaf-like in high winds or when a lorry overtakes. But overall it provides an enjoyable drive and its five-speed gearbox is smooth and decisive - among the best on the market. Distinctive and attractive styling boosts the Mazda 2 package as you can in the video at testdrives.biz. It’s a good quality and well put together vehicle. But to me the rear

wiper looks out of place and the rear washer could be better positioned as water seems to miss the wiper when cleaning the screen. Inside the interior is comfortable if a little drab and black but there is reasonable leg room for both front and rear passengers. Rear passengers get privacy glass and the driver gets a useful left foot rest. The seats are comfy and the dashboard is well designed and easy to navigate. The stereo speakers seem to be of high quality picking up instruments that I was unaware of in my favourite tunes. I like the design of the glove box, too. The electrically folding wing mirrors prove particularly useful during a long traffic jam where I can only fit into my chosen lane by folding the mirrors to get past a van. It works a treat. Parkers, the car experts, say: “The Mazda 2 introduced the world to the Japanese firm’s belief that light weight was every bit as important in the fight against emissions and fuel consumption. The philosophy of Mazda with the 2 is to make every component as light as possible.” Despite my best efforts I have only experienced 49mpg when travelling at a constant 50mph. Travelling at 70mph drops this nearer to 40mpg. Although Mazda has shied away from incorporating engine start stop technology perhaps this would help improve efficiency as might fitting a six-speed gearbox and cruise control. Wenger’s gunner go, surely!? AFTER A shocking week in the cups (FA Cup elimination at the hands of Blackburn and a Champions League hiding off Bayern Munich), it doesn’t take a brave man to assume that Arsenal will now go eight years without silverware. For a club their size, and the players they’ve boasted in recent times, such a dry spell is absolutely shocking. To stave off criticism, manager Arsene Wenger usually attempts to divert attention away from the Emirates trophy cabinet (if they still have one!?) and instead guide critical eyes towards the Arsenal balance sheets and the fact that he’s qualified for the Champions League in each of his sixteen-plus years in charge, but I’m not sure for how much longer he’ll be able to get away with that. Don’t get me wrong, to consistently finish in the Premier League’s top four whilst maintaining a sound business model is commendable but the emphasis Wenger has placed on top European qualification could, by the end of this season, be his undoing. The Gunners currently sit four points behind fourth place Tottenham and although Arsenal overhauled a ten-point deficit last season, Spurs look
the real deal this year and certainly the more likely to be playing Champions League football next season. Certain sections of the Arsenal hierarchy have seemed willing to forego trophies in favour of Champions League money in the past but if that stream of cash were to dry up, would their patience with the Frenchman also run out? Personally, I’m surprised has hasn’t been removed already. Yes the club entertain Europe’s best sides each year and yes they aren’t reliant on an oil-rich sugar-daddy who could get bored and walk out on them tomorrow but it’s trophies and glory that the fans want. Arsenal have indeed made a profit over the past few years, but the likes of Portsmouth, Birmingham and this weekend either Swansea or Bradford have been winning cups! As a fan, it’s tough to get excited that your team’s on a secure financial footing or that your growth outlook for the upcoming fiscal quarter is promising. You won’t win many pub points with an argument like that and if you think people will organise an open-top bus for it then forget it! In my opinion, the Arsenal fans are being lied to. A further contradiction comes around every transfer window when at least one board member releases a statement saying that the manager will be supported and has X-amount of millions to spend but the team instead loses their best players because they aren’t offered
better contracts!? The reality appears to be that Wenger’s only able to spend money he makes from sales which yes, is criminal from the board, but the manager has final say on transfers and the £100million he’s spent in the past eighteen months has been, for the most part, completely wasted. Buying Gervinho for instance, for £11million, should be a sacking offence in itself! If the bottom line really is THE bottom line then the carefully saved pennies must surely be spent more wisely and by someone else because, for me, the days of Wenger buying diamonds in exchange for coal are long gone. Obviously the pundits will tell us we should be careful what we wish for because a new manager may mean an initial dip in performance but a phoenix rising from the ashes would surely be preferable to the current slow, painful death? Wenger’s got to go sometime; he can’t go on forever and, for my money, that time is now. GEOFF BOYCOTT isn’t known for handing our plaudits willynilly so it’s worth bearing in mind that he’s been positively purring over England newcomer Joe Root. THE YOUNG Yorkshireman starred for England in the second one-day international in Napier, scoring 79 from just 56 balls and, in the process, became the first Englishman to score more than 30 runs in each of his first six one-day matches. Speaking on Test match Special, Boycott said “I thought Joe Root played marvellously well, he’s got a range of shots that most people don’t have. He plays without fear, he looks very comfortable and he’s here to stay.”
Now, when an old curmudgeon like Boycs starts issuing compliments like that, you can be pretty sure that England has a very special talent on its hands. That said, having now surely put the kiss of death on the young man, it’ll be interesting to see how he goes in the third and deciding one-day game in Auckland tomorrow. RFL TACKLES PROBLEM HEAD ON Having had a quick trawl through You Tube over the past few days, it’s clear that some of the most explosive ‘hits’ in rugby league involved a shoulder charge. Perpetrators fling themselves at the opposition at high speed with the victims often left dazed and confused on the ground, more often than not having coughed up the ball. However, I’ve never quite understood how the shoulder charge has ever been classed as a tackle seeing as it closer resembles a form of assault. Not anymore however. The RFL in the UK has followed the lead of their Australian counterparts and have banned the shoulder charge with immediate effect. This may upset some traditionalists but with players getting bigger, heavier and more muscular it was only a matter of time before one of these so-called

tackles caused serious injury or worse. The authorities have done the right thing. ROBSHAW COULD BE LIONS MAIN MAN During the autumn international season, England captain Chris Robshaw looked a little out his depth. While playing well enough, his nous as skipper was called in to question with his overly optimistic approach against Australia then his safety first game plan in the dying stages against South Africa. England lost both matches. But then came the record victory against New Zealand which has been followed by two wins out of two in the Six Nations Championship. Success against France this weekend will see England closer to the Grand Slam and quite possibly, Robshaw another step towards the captaincy of the British Lions this summer. Should he get the job, it’ll be an amazing turn around for the 26 year old Harlequin and proof positive that genuine hard work plus self belief can pay off.

We were just waiting for a windsurfer to come past it was that bad. The water is still receding as more water must be being drawn off for the farmers! What about the summer? THE ANNUAL Blupadel Tournament begins in Alicante 1st March and will continue until midDecember. The balls used and the scoring is the same as normal tennis, just with a little less pressure. The biggest difference is that the court has walls and the balls can be played off them in a similar way to squash. The popularity of the game with Spain’s younger generation is probably due to its success as an efficient fitness routine and also it provides a busy social scene. LAST SUNDAY Torry took on 3rd from bottom Denia at the Nelson Mandela “Rugby” stadium. The game had been switched there because of the poor condition of the pitch at the Vicente Garcia. Torry needed to win to climb the table to relative safety. Denia appeared in an All Black kit. Thought it was the Kiwi’s. Some of the play was reminiscent of Rugby with a few rugged challenges and “up and unders”. The first half was pretty uneventful. Torry seized the initiative in the second-half and took the lead after 53 minutes with a goal from sub Cuco Ros. The Torry cause was then helped in the 73rd minute when a Denia player was dismissed for scything down Villanueva. Torry created chances but failed to take them and they paid the price when in the last minute of stoppage time the opposition equalised directly from a free-kick. Somewhat Harsh on Torry. No hope for the future? NOEL’S WORLD OF GOLF By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Alicante Golf 639 730 891
JUST A few weeks ago I attended a golf tournament that was run over three days for the ranking system here in Spain. I attended with lots of expectations including perhaps learning from some of my fellow coaches who would also be there watching over their charges. The event attracted some of the best golfing talent in Spain and some travelled from as far away as Galicia and Andalucía to compete so the attraction of the tournament is plain for all to see. There were also a number of talent scouts around the venue for various organisations within golf. As the first round progressed I chose a group of three players to follow whom I thought would provide some good golf and that I could learn from. I certainly learned more than I bargained for and was extremely disappointed at what I saw going on right under the nose of official referees appointed by the Real Federacion Española de Golf. The group I followed started on tee 10 and after only the second shot of the day I encountered the first bit of the cheating that others had warned me of. A player hit a ball into the water and as I informed the group where the ball crossed the line was constantly ignored,
presumably because the fourth shot would have been a difficult one over a larger expanse of water than where the competitor wanted to drop the ball. The ball was dropped in the wrong place and hit onto the green whilst witnessed by the referee, who also ignored the position from where the ball should really have been played. The competitor continued to post a score that was absolutely incorrect, as a penalty should have been added for playing the ball from the wrong place. In the second incident, a competitor took a triple bogey seven and promptly informed the other players in the group that a six was scored. Once again this incident was recorded under the nose of an appointed referee who ignored this false declaration. How on earth are these people going to get on in life when they are blatant cheats? To be allowed to get away with this level of cheating is totally unacceptable to all who love golf and confirms the reasons why so many expatriates will not play in official competitions. The really sad thing is that I witnessed these incidents along with a friend who confirmed I was right in my understanding of both incidents and I wonder just how much cheating went on in the other groups
on the golf course that was ignored by referees. Has our sport here in Spain really sunk this low or is this just an isolated incident? I really do hope that it is an isolated incident but perhaps it would explain just why when some of the talent from Spain plays in the United Kingdom they miss cuts and get knocked out in the first rounds of tournaments that they should be competing for if their handicaps are correct. RTN Club Scene THE GOLF course was definitely the winner last week at Alicante Golf as high winds saw a depleted field compete in our second round of RTN Golf League 2013 matches. In relatively high winds throughout the day scoring was going to be difficult but as usual our golfers rose to the challenge and great enthusiasm saw a gritty performance from Vic Smith in particular, who came in with 31 Stableford points to take top spot and take home the winner’s Ashworth polo shirt presented to the best score returned every week. This prize has a retail value of around 55€ and is perhaps the best value prize presented at any weekly golf society meeting in the area. Louvain Smith also returned a good score in the conditions as did Steve May who consolidated his position at the top of the leaderboard.
