THIS LAST weekend the “Marea Ciudadana” or citizens wave, spread across Spain as tens of thousands of people took to the streets to voice their complaints about a wide variety of issues, and express their dissatisfaction about current issues, including evictions, corruption and spending cuts. Demonstrations took place throughout the country and al-
though each local protest included an element of local content and local issues, anger against the volume of evictions which still continue across Spain was a common factor nationwide, as was anger against the banks and the levels of corruption currently dominating the media. Looking at the placards nationwide the same messages could be seen in Cartagena as in other cities: “These are not suicides, they’re murders” ( in reference to the recent suicides from those facing eviction) “We have no
money, the treasury has it all,” Rajoy resign” , “this isn´t a crisis, it’s a swindle” “cuts kill” “ We´re fed up and we won´t shut up” and “We want honest politicians not corrupt ones” In Cartagena, PAH, an organisation which dedicates itself to preventing evictions and trying to help those facing eviction to renegotiate with their banks, said that 500 people a day are facing eviction in Spain.
