Benidorm’s twinkling skyline OCCASIONALLY NICKNAMED ‘Beniyork’, Benidorm’s urban image actually bears little resemblance to the Big Apple.

THE CITY has its own unique skyline that has been steadily developing since the fifties when Mayor Pedro Zaragoza bravely made his extraordinary journey to Madrid on a humble Vespa to persuade Franco to permit the wearing of bikinis on Benidorm’s beaches.

Benidorm has the largest number of skyscrapers per capita in Spain and next to New York boasts one of the world’s most recognisable skylines.

BENIDORM’S BIG THREE The Lugano Tower at 178 metres and with 43 storeys has five floors of parking: it is built on the slopes of the Sierra Helada. Penthouse owners at Torre Lugano believe they have the most spectacular views in the city.

ALSA BUSES

This is the bus which runs to Alicante airport.

You can catch it from either the Avda Europa, outside the Europa Clinica or from the bus station. Departs hourly and on the hour from Avda Europa from 7am until 10pm – but there is NO bus at 9pm: costs 9.45€ one way.

BANKS

In Spain banks only open for half a day, so make sure you go in the morning. Normal opening hours are 8.15am till 2pm, no Saturday opening. All banks have an ATM with an option to change the language into English – press the ‘cambio idiomas’ option.

BRITISH CONSULATE This is located in Alicante – Edf Espacio, Rambla Mendez Nuñez, 6th Floor, Alicante 03002. Open Monday to Friday from 8.30am until 1.30pm. In an emergency contact 965 216 002: if you have lost or had your passport stolen you will need to go there to obtain an emergency travel document to get you back to the UK, which will take about two hours to process. It will only be valid for that one journey and costs approximately 120€.

BUSES

The local bus service is run by Llorente. You pay the driver and the cost is 1.50€ regardless of distance. Generally the buses run until midnight. The following buses, which all stop on the main Avd Mediterraneo, are probably the ones which you will find most useful - but with baggage you would need to take a taxi as you are not allowed to take luggage onto local public buses.

CHEMISTS

In Spain they are called a ‘Farmacia’. There is a 24hour farmacia on the main Avd Mediterraneo and the staff speaks English. Many local farmacias close over the lunch period from 1.30, re-opening at 5pm. If you need any sort of medication, including asprin or paracetamol, you can only buy them here: supermarkets are not allowed to sell any kind of medicine.

DOCTOR

If you have your EHIC – European Health Insurance Card you are entitled to see the social security doctor free of charge in an emergency, but you must also present your passport with the card. There is only one social security hospital covering Benidorm – the Hospital Marina Baixa, which is actually located in Villa Joyosa, a short distance from the centre of Benidorm (just past La Cala).

However, there are two private hospitals in the centre of Benidorm – you will have to pay for any treatment or you can use your travel insurance if covered.

REPORTING A CRIME

SATE The Foreign Tourist Assistance Office.

If you are unfortunate enough to become a victim of crime this is ideally where you should go to report it.

Located on the first floor of the Tourist Information Office, at the very end of the Poniente Beach in the Old Town. Open Monday to Friday from 9am until 9pm and from 10am until 2pm over the weekend.

They have interpreters on hand and the use of a telephone to call relatives and your insurance company free of charge.

The 24-hour helpline is 902 102 112.

Benidorm Casino opens its doors

THE NEW casino, on the Avd Mediterraneo opened its doors for business recently, keeping to the promise of opening in July!

by Irena Bodnarec HOWEVER, THE official inauguration by the Mayor, Agustin Navaro took place in the evening followed by a cava reception and tour. This is the third casino that the ´Casino Mediterraneo´ group have in the region – the others are in Alicante port and La Zenia, on the Orihuela Costa.

Construction on the casino only begun at the beginning of this year and although the main casino area is now open, the restaurant on the second floor will be open late September. The 3,600 square metre construction is spread across 3 floors with underground parking sufficient for 350 cars. There are 60 assorted slot machines, a separate allocated area for live sports betting with plenty of television screens relaying live commentary and the traditional casino tables for American Roulette, Black Jack, Poker and Texas Hold´Em. All the gambling area is on the ground floor and is wheelchair accessible.

The casino is open from 10am until 4am 7 days per week and entry is 3€, however there are certain entry requirements. Original photo identification is required, preferably a passport and strictly no under 18´s are allowed in. No shorts or swimwear is allowed – men must wear three quarter or preferably full-length trousers or jeans. Many have welcomed the casino opening, as it will bring a welcome economic boost to the resort and attract plenty of new visitors throughout the entire year.

The Gran Hotel Bali is in La Cala, at the far end of Benidorm and stands tall at 186 metres – it is certainly prominent on the Benidorm skyline.

The hotel is very popular with British guests and in the peak season nearly half of the clients are British. For 8 months of the year, from October through till May the hotel offers All Inclusive board then over the Summer gives you the flexibility to eat out and sample some of the delights of the area.

There are two restaurants, which cater for up to 2000 people on a daily basis – and they certainly have the British market covered by offering HP Sauce and Heinz ketchup! The self service buffet is extensive and even non resident guests can eat there, so if you have friends staying you can always join then for lunch or dinner.

has to be the glass panoramic lift which takes you up to the 43rd floor viewpoint deck. There is a charge to go up – 2.50€ for hotel guests and 6€ for non guests while under 12´s are free (max 1 per adult). However, keep your receipt and on presentation at the Ponoch Bar on the ground floor you will receive a soft drink or glass of draught beer. The view is spectacular and not only do you get to see the whole of Benidorm, but on a clear day Calpe and Alicante too – the lift operates from 10:30am till 1:30pm then again from 3pm until 9pm and you pay at the top.

The beach is only 300 metres away so a firm favourite with families although there are plenty of facilities at the hotel to keep every member of the family entertained.

Every year the hotel hosts the annual BASE Jumping Championships, when participants throw themselves off the top of the building and land by the poolside – a great and nail biting activity to watch. They also welcome the Masons three times a year, who host their balls and dinner dances at one of the exclusive private banqueting suites.

Terra Mitica opens late for the summer

TERRA MITICA is extending its opening hours during the height of the summer season. Benidorm’s most popular theme park will open until midnight each evening until 31st August with the added attraction ‘The Romance of the Andalusian Horse’ staged from 10pm proving a special draw for holidaymakers.

The performance in Iberia Park features the beauty and skill of Flamenco dancing combined with the elegance of equine dressage, an outstanding and unique evening’s entertainment and superb value for money.

Mare Nostrum in the Egyptian area is also not to be missed - a romantic representation of the tale of Bella Xana and her lover Pietro. And a group of magical sea nymphs delight the audience with an enchanting dance on the water. The show includes magical light and sound effects with images projected onto a giant screen.

“Your best holiday Selfie” is the theme of Servigroup’s eighth photography competition THE EIGHTH edition of Servigroup Hotels photographic competition has the theme “Your best holiday selfie”. Grab your Smartphone or tablet and take a fun, original, creative photo while you enjoy your summer holiday and take part in the competition.

IN THIS Edition, more than ever, the main character is you, although you can also be accompanied by friends and family. Any scenario is ideal to show your funny side, on the beach, in the hotel, by the pool or drinking a mojito at the bar, you choose!

Charity day in Benidorm august 2014

COSTA BLANCA charities can share experiences and work together – as well as reaching a wider public audience – at a special day this September.

by Jack Troughton Good causes are being invited to book space at the fourth annual International Charities Fair being staged at the El Cisne Centre on the N332 just outside Benidorm. The objective is to bring together representatives of charities and other organisations working throughout the region and helping people of all nationalities.

It is a chance for the charities to make contact with each other and the general public – and even do some fund raising.

The British Consul in Alicante, Paul Rodwell supports the initiative. He told RTN: “Now in its fourth year, the International Charities Fair brings together charities who work together to help the most vulnerable in our community. “It is a great opportunity to support your favourite charity and even to consider getting involved in volunteer work. Have a great day out and I look forward to seeing you there!”

The day is organised by Pamela Dawson Tasker of Spanish cancer charity AECC and the Royal British Legion, Paula Chinchilla of LIFECOACH, and Steve Ashley, founder of Samaritans in Spain ADVERTISE It is planned to have a “well-known personality” open the fair, with between 50 and 60 stalls, a stage with live and recorded music, and have

microphone access to charities to introduce and advertise their activities.

The day is backed by local media and the event takes place adjacent to the popular and busy El Cisne which helps guarantee a ready audience.

The cost of a stall is just 10€, a token charge to cover minimal overheads as the directors of El Cisne offer the area free of charge.

The organisers said: “As all charities are aware form their own experiences, each organisation encounters from time to time cases which need the assistance of more than one group.

“Some associations give help in the first instance, others can continue for as long as needed, others are very specialised, some offer help in several languages – and we must not forget the animal charities who help with the care or re-homing of pets of sick people.

“Our International Charities Fair is the opportunity to become aware, or more aware, of other organisations that can be called upon for back-up. For the general public it is the chance to know where help can be found when it is needed, to talk to volunteers, and to collect printed information for future use.”

by Dave Gaskell THE LOCAL Lesbian, gay, transsexual and bisexual association of Benidorm (ALGTB) in conjunction with the town hall have confirmed the dates for Pride weekend as September 12, 13 and 14 plus a series of great events from September 8th.

The gay friendly resort has seen a total transformation and change in perception in recent years from the cheap booze style holiday into (and you heard it here first) the cool and trendy resort it is today. Oh yes it is! Benidorm and in particular the old town where the gay village is located offers the perfect Mediterranean backdrop for one of the newest non-commercial pride events in Europe.

Relax and unwind on Poniente – Benidorm’s secret

by Irena Bodnarec FORGET THE Levante when you come to Benidorm and head over to the other side of the Old Town, to experience a real bit of traditional Spain. Whereas the Levante is loud and vibrant, Mal Pas and Poniente beaches are far more tranquil and relaxed, reminiscent of days gone by.

The Old Town is where you will find the iconic Mirador – the point where the two bays meet and a spectacular vantage point, enabling you to see both sides of Benidorm.

There is a lovely selection of bars around the square and throughout the Summer months there is a nightly market, with a selection of artisan stalls to browse around.

Climb down the many steps and you will end up at Mal Pas beach – a small sandy cove virtually hidden from the road. A few metres up the road you will also find the port – where you can catch the boat the Benidorm Island – often referred to as Peacock Island, Tabarca and also to Alicante and Calpe. If you enjoy seafood, then there are some great restaurants serving freshly caught local fish – one within the port area itself and a number up towards Dove Park.

Dove Park, or Parc d´Elx in Spanish, is located at the bottom of the Paseo de la Carretera, or walking street and the start of Poniente beach.

It is a lovely shady park with plenty of palm trees where you can sit and people watch, a very popular Spanish pastime and has a massive population of white doves – hence the name adopted by the Brits.

The distinctive multi coloured wavy promenade, which runs along the entire length of the Poniente beach won an architectural award for its innovative design and definitely worth seeing. This beach is much quieter, although there are still plenty of bars and restaurants directly across the road from the beach. One certainly worth stopping at is ´Amigos Bistro´ - about half way along just past the Poseidon Playa Hotel and currently ranked No 1 restaurant in Benidorm on TripAdvisor. The end of the wavy promenade marks the end of Poniente beach and the start of La Cala – not to be confused with La Cala Finestrat, which is further down. There

are no bars or restaurants directly along this part of the beachfront, so very quiet and popular with the locals and families. This is the part of Benidorm where you will find all the luxury villas and penthouses, overlooking the Med – and favoured by the rich and famous! The skyline is dominated by the stunning Intempo building, with its glistening gold clad twin towers and Europe´s tallest residential building – with a price tag to

match! So if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of stereotypical Benidorm, head down to the Poniente and chillax.

LAST MONTH, ITV’s ‘Good Morning Britain’ breakfast programme broadcast live from Benidorm over three days. Presenter Ranvir Singh and Dr Hilary Jones flew over from the UK and focused on holiday related issues for the broadcast. They spoke to a number of Brits on holiday here, both at the Sol Pelicanos poolside and the Levante beach front.

For Ranvir it was her first time in Benidorm and she was pleasantly surprised. The entire crew had been to the Old Town for a fantastic meal in Tapas Alley and she loved the atmosphere there – very different from the Rincon area, where they were staying.

Dr Hilary has been before, albeit a number of years ago with the family, but both agreed it is certainly a place that they would love to come back to.

Our mystery man on the street …takes a sneaky look at the very popular and central HOTEL ORANGE 3*

Deciding where to stay in Benidorm can be an uphill climb. What is perfect for one person could be holiday hell for another! Of course Benidorm is rarely a place for peace and tranquillity, BUT, finding the right mix of fun, sun and a little bit of chill time is crucial if you are to return home relaxed with a feeling of time and money well spent.

In the first of a series from our mystery man on the street we attempt to offer you the ‘real’ hotels behind the brochures: this month, the amazingly popular Hotel Orange.

THE HOTEL The first thing that strikes you about the hotel Orange as you walk through the entrance is the incredibly well kept lobby and lounge area. This is a typical hotel from Servigroup - the obvious investment in furnishings that will last are easy to maintain and tip-top housekeeping is evident. Although an older style (1970s) hotel, modernising in recent years has kept the building up to date including sound-proofed doors to balconies, a real plus for a stay in the heart (Café Benidorm disco pub is opposite!) of the Playa Levante. A couple of guests mentioned to me that they were staying overlooking the late bars and could barely notice any noise after a few Vodkas and once the terrace doors were closed!

THE ROOMS Refurbished only a couple of years ago, rooms are modern and bright with wooden floors and flat screen TV, including plenty of UK Channels, not just the news. WiFi is free and does work in rooms too. There is a mini-fridge for chilling your drinks. Guests also mentioned that the showers are really powerful and the cleaning is 100%. All you could need then!

THE FOOD Probably one of the main reasons that so many British guests love this hotel is the food. The dining options are very much geared toward foreign visitors with just the right mix of local cuisine and dishes we northern Europeans like! Breakfast is vast and will fill you up all day. With 16 hotels and over 8,000 beds, Servigroup has a central food supply which enables them to offer well above average catering: worth the few extra Euros to go Full Board here.

THE POOL At first it appears perhaps a bit on the small side, but when you add up the fact the hotel only has a maximum 500 guests, most of whom head for the beach (3 minute walk), it is never a problem finding a sunbed from the many provided. On my visit this week there was plenty of room to spare around the pool or on the sun deck above.

Drinks are just a hop away from the poolside bar too. No sign of any rowdy groups either, there seemed to be mostly couples.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW The location is right in the very centre of the resort and opposite many of the late night venues, therefore some noise should be expected at night when staying in this area. The hotel is popular with couples who like to party and some groups too, but the soundproofed terrace doors really do make a difference. The hotel management are good at sorting out any rowdy folks, so a quick call to reception quickly sorts out any issues.

Like every hotel in Benidorm, fellow guests can never be anticipated, so do not let the location put you off booking. We loved the Hotel Orange, it is ideal for a holiday if good food, great nights out and a very clean place to stay is on your list.

PARC DE ELCHE

Better known to the Brits as ‘Dove Park’, it can be found at the beginning of Poniente Beach on the edge of the Old Town: a lovely, shady park area with plenty of palm trees. Here you can sit and ‘people watch’ with a massive population of white doves which you can feed – very popular with the Spanish.

The giant rock jutting out directly in front of the Levante beach is ap 4 km from the shore. You can catch a glass bottomed boat from the marina at Mal Pas which gives you some amazing views of the reef and fish then explore the wildlife and bird population on the island.

THIS MONTH Duckie did some time travel and took a peak at the Castle of Benidorm which existed since the 1330´s, or at least the place where it once stood, Placa Del Castell. Sadly the genuine article was lost and today we are a few centuries too late to appreciate the Medieval Castle that once protected the land of Valencia and village of Benidorm built within the walls.

Firstly from the Moors, then to control the Muslims who were allowed to remain and live after the land returned to Christian rule in 1492 and latterly from the Algerian Pirates (Barbary Corsairs) who were a real threat throughout the 17th and 18th centuries until the 19th century when the French arrived.

Over the years the Castle was remodelled, strengthened and modernised to take the latest artillery. In 1812 the castle was

Located up in the Old Town, right at the top and often referred to as the Mirador. A little bit of a steep climb but well worth it when you see the beautiful panoramic views of both the bays. You can also access it from Mal Pas beach where there is a staircase which leads all the way up. A very pretty blue and white tiled gazebo with seating makes a lovely backdrop for a photo and the square has a selection of bars so you can take in the stunning scenery.

This was also the first time that British visitors came to Benidorm!

An attempt was made to raid the castle by just eight men, failing of course against the 280 French troops. A suicidal attempt with just one dead. The French commander was so impressed by such bravery that he invited the British Captain to dine with him and the seven survivors were returned to fight another day! By the end of the war the British had destroyed much of the castle and as the town expanded beyond the castle walls it was deemed unnecessary and too expensive to rebuild. The visible ruins remained near the site of the hotel Canfali until around 1845 and part of the castle wall remained until it was finally demolished in 1928 when the current Placa Del Castell was built and the

If you are fed up of pie & chips and fancy a taste of the real Spain then head to Calle Santo Domingo – better known to all as “Tapas Alley” in the Old Town. The tapas are displayed behind glass and you can walk up and down pointing to whatever takes your fancy - the prices vary depending on which ones you choose but are generally between 1.50€ and 2.50€.

VIEWPOINT AT GRAN HOTEL BALI

If you want to see Benidorm from a different perspective then pop to the Gran Hotel Bali in La Cala where you can go up to the panoramic view point on the 43rd floor - in a glass lift! Open from 11.00am until 13.30pm then again from 15.30pm until 21.30pm there is a 6 euros charge for non-residents, but you do get a drink at the viewpoint bar included – chlldren under 12 go free (1 per adult).

PONIENTE PROMENADE

The brand new Poniente Promenade is the envy of every seaside resort and runs from the Old Town down towards La Cala. The promenade took over two years to complete and cost near on 20 million euros - but much of that was funding from the EU. The innovative multi coloured wave design won an architectural award and definitely worth seeing.

TERRA NATURA

More of a wildlife park than a zoo, with three zones: America, Asia and Europe and you can see animals native to those Continents living within their natural environment with shrubs and plants from their natural habitat. There are plenty of interactive activities going on throughout the day such as feeding the animals and for the more adventurous you can even Zip Wire across a 400metre stretch above the elephant plain.

A Benidorm landmark situated on the Sierra Helada mountains in the Rincon. The cross was erected in the 1950´s by residents and is 8 metres tall. A popular walk route taking ap 45 mins each way with breath taking views of the town.

hit, particularly with young families. There are lots of shows throughout the day and you can even book to swim with the sea lions or get up close to the dolphins. However, both of these need to be pre-booked. It is really easy to get to there: if driving the best place to head for is Benidorm Palace - then take the road almost opposite and it will take you all the way there - about a 2 minute drive. Parking is free. Or catch a public bus - either the number 1 or 11 - to take you straight to the entrance - but if there are four of you it will probably work out the same to take a taxi, especially if you are coming from Benidorm.

Water fun on Levante beach AUGUST AND September are the ideal time to enjoy the warm lapping waters of the Med, whether you just want a paddle or to try something a little more adventurous.

By Irena Bodnarec FOR SOME real fun in the water head to the end of Levante beach, at the Rincon de Loix end and you will be spoilt for choice. Benidorm is a paradise for water sport enthusiasts and you will be able to try a vast array of activities here.

The Cable Ski platform, which you can see just off the shore, has been established for over 45 years and has a 1000 square metre circuit, supported by 4 towers. Up to 12 riders can ski or wakeboard at the same time and sessions can be booked either by the hour, day or simply by the number of circuits you wish to do. The only conditions for use are that you must be able to swim. For real adrenalin seekers try the JetSki – you

are taken out with a guide and have a number of options to choose from – instructions and safety jackets are provided. A half hour session takes you around Benidorm Island and the Old Town area, an hour session past Albir to the bay of Altea or longer excursions will take you up to and past Moraira, with the opportunity to go snorkeling and swim inside the caves of Cabo de la Nao, just before Javea. If that is too tame, then how about parasailing – either solo or a tandem.

You can try the Yellow Submarine sea scooter rental, where a small hand held water propeller will pull you through the sea, enabling you to admire the underwater sea life – a great family activity or for groups, who can resist the

fun of the big yellow banana boat ride, both available from the yellow ´Carlos´ desk. Pedalos are available to hire by the hour from the beach, some with slides and there is always the floating pontoon – but you have to be able to swim out to get to it. Marco Polo Excursiones, on the Avd Europa also have a selection of other water activities to try from alternative locations dotted around the area. If you don´t want the hard work but still wish to admire the sea, then try a boat trip to Benidorm Island, departing every hour from the end of the Levante beach. Head to the port in the Old Town and there are other boat excursions, taking you further afield such as Calpe, Tabarca and Alicante.

Altea Tues Take the number 10 bus to the last stop and the market is on the next street – just follow the crowds.

Wed Benidorm Head towards the Hotel Pueblo and give yourself plenty of time if you want to see everything! There is also a market in the Old Town, located just behind the tram station.

Thur Villa Joyosa / El Cisne

The bus service to Villa Joyosa is rather limited but it is worth visiting this beautiful town. Alternatively, El Cisne is a very popular flea market if you like to rummage and the bus stops right outside.

The vast market located on the edge of Benidorm in the Rincon de Loix and it is vast, offers everything you could want in a bargain basement sort of way! Even the most demanding deal conscious shopper should find plenty of happy stall holders willing to exchange your Euros for some look-a-like designer gear or a cheap handbag or two!

There is more to the infamous Benidorm market than meets the eye. This is no ordinary market place, here you can enjoy a good few hours putting to rest those animal hunting instincts we all have and forage for treats to eat, clothes to wear and sneak up on some bargain booty hidden among row after row of stalls.

Of course there are the staple stalls found in every market such as long established fruit and veg businesses and sellers of pic-n-mix nuts, dried fruits and olives galore. If cheap leather is your thing and brown is your colour! You will find a dozen stalls retailing 50 shades of brown coats, bags, shoes, belts of course and even leather hats just like the traveller community wear.

At the back of the market are the cafeteria bars, which you will need after seemingly endless miles of walking up and down the market in the search of those special offers. Enjoy burgers, beers and even Cupcakes or just a coffee then sit and watch the world go by.

Benidorm market is like Woolworth used to be, pile it high and sell it cheap. They certainly do and despite a number of stalls arguably selling mainly tatty stuff, if you are keen eyed and enjoy a good routing there are many genuine bargains to be found. Even the fake Adidas appear quite well made and would probably fool Adidas! And those Cupcakes are quite delicious.

Whatever your impression, Benidorm market has been around almost as long as Benidorm and is a must visit place either on Wednesday or Sunday. There is a great atmosphere, it is busy and almost everyone seems to leave with arms full of carrier bags. Get there early and remember it is all over by 2pm. Keep a keen eye on your valuables as there are always a few Artful Dodger types willing to pick a pocket or two!

La Cala market is located not far from the Carrefour hypermarket in Finestrat and you can catch the number 2 bus from the centre of Benidorm to get there.

Beautifully landscaped grounds with plenty of shady areas and a new swimming section with Jacuzzi and plenty of water rides throughout the park – so don´t forget to bring your swimming costumes. AQUALANDIA The largest waterpark in Europe and a favourite throughout the hot months with everyone, regardless of age.

The coloured water slides are quite an iconic sight on the Benidorm skyline and Aqualandia has the worlds highest capsule slide – Verti-Go, measuring 33 metres. Open from 10am, you can purchase all days tickets or half day – valid after 3pm. The number 1 and 11 buses go right to the front entrance or if going by car, parking is free.

TERRA NATURA Wildlife park divided into 3 zones – America, Asia and Europe where you get to see animals of those continents living within their natural environment. The park has over 1500 animals of 200 different species – 50 of which are classified as endangered and they run a very successful breeding program. There are plenty of interactive activities going on throughout the day, such as feeding the animals and for the brave you can fly across the elephant plain on the 400 metre ´Zipwire´!

MUNDOMAR Marine animal park directly next door to Aqualandia which also has many exotic animals. A particular favourite with children, offering plenty of shows throughout the day, including parrot, sea lion and dolphin spectaculars. There is also an opportunity to book a unique ´swimming with the sea lions´ or ´encounter with dolphins´ experience – however both need to be pre-booked.

AQUA NATURA Water park located next to Terra Natura. Smaller than Aqualandia but there is certainly no shortage of slides, plumes and activities to keep you amused which has the added bonus of a free Sea Lion show twice daily.

There is a man made beach with sand and this park is probably better suited than the other water park for younger children.

PEACOCK ISLAND

Take a boat ride from Benidorm to Peacock Island - a 30 minute trip on a glass-bottomed boat that allows you to observe the local sea life. Explore the island, and the beautiful view of the coastline and Benidorm bay.

BENIDORM PALACE A magnificent spectacle of colour with fabulous dancers and glamorous costumes. Featuring a variety of original, top artistes from around the world, this will surely be an evening to remember.

GUADALEST Set at 595m above sea level, the village of Guadalest hangs precariously to the mountain top and is rated as one of the most visited villages in Spain; and with good reason. Dating back to the 8th Century, Guadalest is now home to just over 200 residents who invite you to step back in time and explore their fabulous home.

PLACA DEL CASTELL It’s a great place where you can see Benidorm’s beautiful skyline. Sometimes there are dancers, market stalls and people playing instruments.

It is a true pleasure strolling through the cobbled streets of this historical and little-known old town. The typical “Mediterranean style” whitewashed town houses, centuries-old walls and stately homes form part of this perfectly conserved little town that is filled with atmosphere. As with any Mediterranean town, there are usually lots of places to see and visit and Benissa is no different.

FROM QUAINT boutiques to easily-recognised chains, retail therapy is never far from reach in Benidorm. Whatever you are after, be it fashion, leather goods or souvenirs, you will have no problem finding them here. The choice is vast and diverse but you need to know where to look.

AVENIDA MEDITERRANEO

THE AVD Mediterraneo, which runs all the way from the Rincon de Loix up to the edge of the Old Town, is lined with an array of shops. Tobacco shops for your cigarette and spirit supply to take back home – the biggest range is found at EuroTobacco; leather shops selling beautiful quality coats and jackets for ladies and gents; Lottery shops if you fancy a flutter on the Euro Millions and plenty of souvenir shops selling typical holiday mementos.

LA MARINA

La Marina Shopping Centre offers a broad selection of shops in an air conditioned environment. Known as ‘Centro Comercial La Marina’, it has shops and restaurants and even an entertainment complex on the top floor. C&A, a UK department store which disappeared from the UK High Street some years back, you will still find here – and particularly popular with visiting Brits.

OLD TOWN

The Old Town is a great place to start. Calle Gambo, the pedestrianised street that begins at the Plaza Triangular, where the huge rubber tree is, has a great selection of popular boutiques such as Masimo Dutti – a must for fashion-savvy customers, and Zara, which is now everyone’s favourite High Street fashion hit: even the Duchess of Cambridge and Coleen Rooney want to be seen in this leading Spanish fashion brand. The prices tend to work out cheaper here in Spain even taking into account the exchange rate, so it is certainly worth a visit. One well-known English name here and one you will be familiar with is Specsavers - the UK’s most popular opticians, run by Phillip, a British ex-pat. Paseo de la Carretera is another must-do street and will take you all the way to Elche Park.

The zone everyone calls “The Square” in the Rincon de Loix slips up several gears as day turns to night and a thousand neon lights wink at you, tempting you into over 150 central pubs, clubs and cabaret venues.

THE SQUARE IS A TRIANGLE The “Square” refers to the area where the infamous “Café Benidorm” is located and is the hub of the entertainment zone. In reality it is actually a triangle from Morgan´s Tavern at one end to the brand new TITANIC bar at the Marina Hotel at the other end. The triangle is crisscrossed with enough venues to keep even the most demanding punters happy. You will be kept howling with laughter, toe tapping, line dancing or enjoying a tipple or three after a late night feast at the dozens of (mainly British) café bars squeezed tightly between the giant cabaret venues.

TRIBUTES TO MAKE YOU GO GAGA, MEATLOAF OR MEET ROD STEWART Every night let the big names entertain you from some cracking tribute acts. Mother Monster, LADY GAGA pops up most nights at Rocker Fellas as do WESTLIFE and down the road at Stardust TAKE THAT will have you going wild until the wee small hours. For those who are getting on in their years and prefer the gentleman of rock go see MEATLOAF and ROD STEWART. Many Benidorm entertainers skip across town to perform in various venues from early until late. Check the boards outside venues to see who is appearing where and when this July.

COMEDY THAT WILL HAVE YOU HOWLING Benidorm is not short on funny men and not short on comedy venues including the UK Comedy & Cabaret Club

Other not to be missed local comedy heroes are the incredible Albi Senior “The British Bulldog of Comedy” for squeaky clean humour (NOT) from the big man and an absolute must see, the very funny Rikki Stevens and even funnier sidekick Fred (The Monkey). If you only see one act in Benidorm, then Rikki Stevens is the one, Fred the Monkey is a real star, find them at THE TOWN, but grab a seat early! Check with venue for times. It is doubtful that you will find a more diverse bunch of hard working entertainers anywhere in the world and all this comes to you with no door charge, simply the price of a few drinks. And remember if you miss an act early doors you will more than likely catch many of them later or tomorrow at another venue in town. Benidorm puts on a great show 365 days a year, it never stops, it is all good, it is very friendly, very cheap and very British and it all starts again tomorrow night from dusk until dawn. Are you ready to do it all again?

Olly Murs

A REAL hit on the Benidorm entertainment circuit at the moment, especially with the ladies, is the Olly Murs tribute show – and the talent behind the sensational voice is Troy Fallaize. In addition to his solo performance, Troy is also part of the Boyzone v Westlife show. Originally from Chatham in Kent, Troy has been in Benidorm for 4 years now and unsurprisingly for those that have seen him, is rather a health & fitness enthusiast. Prior to his arrival in Benidorm, Troy studied graphic design at college for 3 years and supplemented his income with some part time modeling – not hard to envisage when you see him! His artistic background is evident and reflected by the elaborate body art covering his arms and he proudly wears a Help for Heroes wristband to show his support for the armed forces, of which his brother is a serving member with the Royal Engineers. The love of his life is Kia, a beautiful husky rescue dog and he is about to adopt another to keep her company – what a kind and thoughtful guy. You can catch the Olly Murs show every night in Talk of the Coast at 11pm and in Jail Rock on Monday, Friday and Saturday at 10pm.

Believe it or not Granny’s Tea House has been in Benidorm (Old Town) since 1981, you´ll find us near Dove Park, tucked away just off the walking street, going towards the church. Vincents Benidorm Old Town Traditional English
