Santa’s toy run THIS YEAR RTN’s Christmas Appeal has been to raise money to help buy festive treats for the children and a reporter will be on board on one of the machines to record the event for the paper.

by Jack Troughton MEMBERS OF the Costa Blanca Bikers Espana Group will be dressed in Santa Claus outfits for the ride through Benidorm.

The route takes the club through Benidorm along the promenade on the Poniente Beach between 10.30am and 11am – timings are approximate – for breakfast at Bar Nevada – everyone needs a refuelling stop in winter!

The motorbikes then stop at Benidorm Town Hall for a now traditional group photograph and the club then heads to Albir to ride along the seafront to Altea and on to EMAUS headquarters and

a much anticipated rendezvous with the kids.

The youngsters will have been enjoying a magician, mini disco, and a bouncy castle while they wait for the arrival of Santa’s grown up helpers.

HARLEY Club President Alan Milburn said the bikers – all Harley Davidson owners – first started working with EMAUS in 2008 when they purchased a complete computer system for the children to do “essential” homework.

First stone laid for Benidorm’s new Casino THE MEDITERRANEAN Casino Group laid the first foundation stone of the Casino Mediterráneo in Benidorm on Wednesday. The ambitious €6 million project on Avenida del Mediterraneo along the Rincon de Loix on a 5,231 square metre plot, is to include a 30-storey hotel in addition to the six-table gaming complex and is scheduled to open in time for the next summer season. Attending the ceremony on Wednesday were architects Juan Ramón Martínez Mendoza and José María Peláez; Alamo Jesus Martinez, president of Mediterranean Casino; and Benidorm’s mayor, Agustín Navarro. The Casino is one of four major projects planned that will further boost tourism and employment in Benidorm. The other three are: the construction of a ski centre in Terra Mitica; a cabin camping facility in Terra Natura and Rodamco shopping centre. The four projects, entailing a €500 million investment, could generate 2,000 jobs.

Practical information HERE IS some useful information to help make your holiday in Benidorm safe, worry free and a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

AIRLINE NUMBERS

If you need to contact the airline for any reason these are numbers based in Spain.

ALSA BUSES

This is the bus which runs to Alicante airport.

You can catch it from either the Avda Europa, outside the Europa Clinica or from the bus station. Departs hourly and on the hour from Avda Europa from 7am until 10pm – but there is NO bus at 9pm: costs 9.45€ one way.

BANKS

In Spain banks only open for half a day, so make sure you go in the morning. Normal opening hours are 8.15am till 2pm, no Saturday opening. All banks have an ATM with an option to change the language into English – press the ‘cambio idiomas’ option.

BRITISH CONSULATE This is located in Alicante – Edf Espacio, Rambla Mendez Nuñez, 6th Floor, Alicante 03002. Open Monday to Friday from 8.30am until 1.30pm. In an emergency contact 965 216 002: if you have lost or had your passport stolen you will need to go there to obtain an emergency travel document to get you back to the UK, which will take about two hours to process. It will only be valid for that one journey and costs approximately 120€.

BUSES

The local bus service is run by Llorente. You pay the driver and the cost is 1.50€ regardless of distance. Generally the buses run until midnight. The following buses, which all stop on the main Avd Mediterraneo, are probably the ones which you will find most useful - but with baggage you would need to take a taxi as you are not allowed to take luggage onto local public buses.

BUSINESS HOURS

Most large stores stay open all day but smaller independant shops, particularly in the Old Town will shut at 2pm for lunch then re-open at 5pm until 8pm.

Shops are normally closed on Sundays except for small food stores which open until 2pm.

CHEMISTS

In Spain they are called a ‘Farmacia’. There is a 24hour farmacia on the main Avd Mediterraneo and the staff speaks English. Many local farmacias close over the lunch period from 1.30, re-opening at 5pm. If you need any sort of medication, including asprin or paracetamol, you can only buy them here: supermarkets are not allowed to sell any kind of medicine.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

There are plenty of currency exchange bureau´s in Benidorm. You will need to show your passport the first time thenyou will receive a card to show for subsequent visits, so there is no need to carry your passport with you. Reputable establishments include Eurochange who have several branches, Sheila´s at the indoor market and Wine Barrel on the Avd Mediterraneo. Bank rates are not as good as the exchange bureau´s . Hotels offer the poorest rate so only use for emergencies.

DOCTOR

If you have your EHIC – European Health Insurance Card you are entitled to see the social security doctor free of charge in an emergency, but you must also present your passport with the card. There are two ‘Centro de Salud’ (health centres) in Benidorm you can attend: Rincon de Loix - On Avd Derramador near to the Indoor market Foiettes in the Old Town - Calle Venuzuela La Cala - Avda de Benisa

There is only one social security hospital covering Benidorm – the Hospital Marina Baixa, which is actually located in Villa Joyosa, a short distance from the centre of Benidorm (just past La Cala).

However, there are two private hospitals in the centre of Benidorm – you will have to pay for any treatment or you can use your travel insurance if covered.

REPORTING A CRIME

SATE The Foreign Tourist Assistance Office.

If you are unfortunate enough to become a victim of crime this is ideally where you should go to report it.

Located on the first floor of the Tourist Information Office, at the very end of the Poniente Beach in the Old Town. Open Monday to Friday from 9am until 9pm and from 10am until 2pm over the weekend.

They have interpreters on hand and the use of a telephone to call relatives and your insurance company free of charge.

The 24-hour helpline is 902 102 112.

New tram service Benidorm – Alfas RAILWAYS OF the Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) began work on 11th November to provide a new tram service between Benidorm and Alfas. The construction in three phases will last for around 5½ months on a budget of €3.3 million and will interrupt railway traffic between Benidorm and Alfas. However, a supporting bus route will be available throughout.

Benidorm is back for sixth series THE LONG awaited 6th series of the ITV hit comedy, which was filmed in the resort between March and June of this year, will be aired on our screens this January.

THIS FORTHCOMING series has 7 episodes produced by two different directors. New to the series is David Sant, a Spanish born actor but living and directing in London for the last 20 years, for episodes 1-4 and returning once again with his trademark moustache Sandy Johnson for the final 3. The highlight of this series must be the appearance of Hollywood legend Joan Collins - what a coup and honour for the creator and writer Derren Litten. Joan has been cast as Crystal Hennesey Vass, the CEO of the Solana Group and will be featured in the last episode.When she made her appearance on set at the end of May, Benidorm literally came to a standstill. All the old favourites have returned including the arrival of a new family, The Dykes who ruffle a few feathers!

It now has a huge cult following and a 7th series has already been announced – which will once again begin filming in the New Year.

San Silvestre Race

FOR THE 4th year Benidorm will host the San Silvestre race on Sunday 29th December. The 6km race starts at 11am and sets off from the corner of Calle Bilbao and the Avd Mediterraneo – where the Don Dino toy shop is near the Plaza Triangular. There is also a separate childrens race, which for the under 13´s is 1km setting off at 12 noon. For the bold and courageous you can take part in a swim, taking place in the icy waters of the nearby sea at 12.30pm.

There is a registration fee – some of which will be donated to the local branch of Cruz Rojo (Red Cross).

“They go to normal school but their life is totally different to that of their peer group and as such, they feel like outsiders, especially at times such as Christmas and birthdays.”

He said the club decided in 2009 that the Toy Run would help forge a much needed connection.

The bikers have also met with the EMAUS for a series of social engagements. Alan added: “We have been to the Altea home just for a picnic and a football match was also arranged where we supplied and cooked all the food for the kids and staff - we won by the way, but they are asking for a return match!”

Old Town

The Old Town is a great place to start. Calle Gambo, the pedestrianised street that begins at the Plaza Triangula. The prices tend to work out cheaper here in Spain even taking into account the exchange rate, so it is certainly worth a visit.

Paseo de la Carretera is another must-do street and will take you all the way to Elche Park. One quirky shop which will catch your eye is Ale Hop – easily spotted as all the branches have a massive cow outside! Here you will find accessories, gifts, unusual novelties and decor at very affordable prices. Ladies, if you are looking for a fabulous ball gown, make sure you pop into Bambu where you will be amazed at the array of styles and colours on offer – and so much cheaper than the UK! Not forgetting the boys and budding Rambos among you, if you have a passion for guns and military bits then stop off at Europa. One shop which you will not be able to resist walking into is Bartolucci – a fairytale toyshop offering hand-made wooden toys of exceptional quality. You will not be able to resist the adorable painted wooden objects such as clocks, door plates and pictures frames, which can all be personalised – any child would be delighted with a gift from here.

LA MARINA

LA MARINA Shopping Centre offers a broad selection of shops in an air conditioned environment. C&A, a UK department store which disappeared from the UK High Street some years back, you will still find here – and particularly popular with visiting Brits. There is an excellent Zara Home selling gorgeous home accessories; a home store called Casa where you can buy all manner of kitchen gadgets and knick knacks for the home; Mango; H&M; Stradivarius; Pimkie and Benetton for trendy fashion; Druni and Douglas – both selling beauty products and perfume … and that’s just a handful of what is on offer. You can easily spend hours browsing around here.

AVENIDA MEDITERRANEO

THE AVD Mediterraneo, which runs all the way from the Rincon de Loix up to the edge of the Old Town, is lined with an array of shops. Tobacco shops for your cigarette and spirit supply to take back home – the biggest range is found at EuroTobacco; leather shops selling beautiful quality coats and jackets for ladies and gents; Lottery shops if you fancy a flutter on the Euro Millions and plenty of souvenir shops selling typical holiday mementos.

TOY SHOPS

CHRISTMAS IS particularly an enchanting time for children – with the main focus being what presents they will receive! They are particularly well catered for here, with plenty of toy shops around. The biggest and most popular are Jugetilandia – meaning toyland, of which there are 2 local branches, a small one on the Calle Ruzafa and a huge one next to Iceland by the La Marina shopping centre. The other well known toyshop is Don Dino, which can be found on the main Avd Mediterraneo… and remember, they both offer a free gift wrapping service!

Top 5 things to do over Christmas Benidorm is a great place to be over the festive period THE WEATHER is mild during the day but crisp once the sun goes down. Shops are beautifully decorated, most have a red carpet outside and colourful Xmas lights adorn the streets.

If you are looking for something memorable for Xmas Day or Boxing Day then head to Benidorm Palace. As well as a festive meal they also have an extra special performance, with guest appearance by “The Drifters” incorporated into the show.

For those with young children then a trip to The Circus is a must – and throughout December the arrival of Father Xmas during the show will delight the little ones.

They will also be able to hand in their wish list to him – so go prepared.

Another ideal trip for those with young children is to Mundomar. They are open every day over the festive period from 10am until 6pm – except Xmas Day. The park is seasonally decorated and from 21st December the Dolphin, Sea lion and Parrot shows all have a Xmas theme. Special offers are available via the website or through Round Town Travel.

If it´s chilly then head inland to Guadalest and you may actually see some snow covering the mountains. There are some lovely little gift shops where you can purchase an unusual Xmas gift and plenty of cafes to warm up with a nice hot drink, while you admire the beautiful picturesque scenery.

TOWN HALL SQAURE For all kids big and small then head to the Town Hall square where they have a temporary ice skating rink over the two week Xmas period. You can hire the skates for a nominal charge – don´t forget to bring your gloves as the ice is cold!

New Years Eve - Spanish style AS EVERYONE recovers from the aftermath of Christmas, many will be busy planning what to do on New Years Eve.

IN MUCH the same way that crowds tend to congregate in Trafalgar Square it has become a bit of a custom here to head to the Mirador up in the Old Town.

Revellers tend to come armed with two things for the occasion – a bottle of Cava to toast in the New Year and the age old tradition of the twelve grapes.

You will see them being sold at virtually every supermarket, in bags or tins, ready peeled and deseeded - and grape for grape, as expensive as caviar! At the strike of midnight, the mad frenzy begins - with every chime you have to eat one of the grapes! By the time the clock finishes you are suppose to have eaten all twelve and if you do, then you will have luck for the following 12 months! Very few actually manage to eat all of them on time and most will have a bulging mouthful, desperately trying to swallow!

The twelve grapes have been a tradition in Spain since 1909, thought up, unsurprisingly, by the vine growers in the Alicante region! That year they had a bumper harvest and didn´t know what to do with them all, so some bright spark came up with the 12 grapes at midnight idea, which has been carried on ever since.

There is a fantastic party atmosphere and celebrations continue well into the early hours at many of the bars, which have extended opening licenses for the occasion. Wishing all our readers a happy and prosperous 2014!

Three Kings tradition FOR CHILDREN in Spain, the 5th of January is the most magical night of the year. As those in the UK recover from the excesses of Christmas and the New Year, the Spanish are at it again! The streets of many towns will be transformed into fantasy scenarios as they witness the arrival of “Los Reyes Magos”, the Three Kings.

January 6th is the feast of Epithany, when the Three Kings arrived in Bethlehem bearing gifts for the newborn Jesus. However, the fun starts the evening before, on the 5th. Families will be out in force to watch a succession of beautifully decorated floats parade down the streets with the Three Kings throwing handfuls of sweets to the waiting children.

In Benidorm, the procession departs from Park d´Elche (Dove Park in the Old Town) around 6pm, heading down towards the Calle Ruzafa before finishing at the Town Hall Square. Last year more than 300 people took part in the parade, including three bands, plus livestock.

During the parade, a total of 1,500 kilos of sweets will be thrown out to the spectators along the route.

After the parade the children go home and place a shoe filled with straw on the windowsill before they go to bed.

In the morning they will wake to find gifts left by the Three Kings, or if they have been naughty a sack of coal.

But these days the supermarkets produce “Carbon”sweets that look like coal, sold in old fashioned hessian type sacking!

Benidorm set to be top dive site There are several world class dive sites within Europe – and Benidorm is about to join that list!

by Irena Bodnarec The driving force behind the exciting project is Howard Stirrup, Deputy President of the hugely popular Indoor Market and Damien Forman, an enthusiastic diver and both key members of “British Benidorm”.The English speaking association was set up tofocus attention on security issues, particularly around the Rincon de Loix and promote tourism in the area. Following a meeting with the Mayor Agustin Navarro at the beginning of November, the pair shared their vision of making Benidorm the top dive destination in Europe by following the example of Cabo de Palos in Murcia. Benidorm already offers so much yet could significantly improve and open up other avenues by offering underwater wreck diving – a huge and untapped market.

They prepared a detailed 11 pagereport in collaboration with “CelacantoBuceoaltea”, a dive centre located in the port of Altea with two main

proposals of how to achieve this objective. To lure scuba divers to the beautiful blue waters of Benidorm the proposal suggests sinking a boat just off the coast – ideally between the shores of the Levante and Benidorm Island. As well as attracting divers to explore the wreck it would also encourage marine life and growth of coral reefs, in turn preserving the marine eco-system.

Additionally, the plan includes snorkelers, who would also benefit by creating a separate underwater attraction at the end of the Levante beach. This would be visible from the Mirador in the Old Town – generating an attraction in itself. Various interesting objects such as treasure chests, statues and marine paraphernalia would be sunk to no more than 2 meters in depth, giving good visibility from the surface. The Mayor was extremely enthusiastic to the plans and can see the tremendous benefits it would bring to the resort – tourism rocketed by 80% in Murcia following the establishment of their dive site. The diving season runs from the end of February until

November, and being in such close proximity to the UK would attract a potentially significant new group of tourists. His desire would be to have it in place for the start of next years holiday season and he has promised to do everything possible to ensure it happens. This is fantastic news for Benidorm – novices would be able to participate in a 2 day course through one of the associated dive schools and then go on to explore the mystery which lies beneath. It is certainly opening up the market to a whole new sector and will complement the water sports already on offer, which can only be beneficial to the entire resort.

THE POOL For the size of the hotel the (two) pools and sun decks are a great size with plenty of sunbeds for everyone to find a place in the sun. The pool bar is open for much of the year.

Better known to the Brits as ‘Dove Park’, it can be found at the beginning of Poniente Beach on the edge of the Old Town: a lovely, shady park area with plenty of palm trees. Here you can sit and ‘people watch’ with a massive population of white doves which you can feed – very popular with the Spanish.

The giant rock jutting out directly in front of the Levante beach is ap 4 km from the shore. You can catch a glass bottomed boat from the marina at Mal Pas which gives you some amazing views of the reef and fish then explore the wildlife and bird population on the island.

Sunday calorie burn high above sea level END YOUR holiday with a hike in them hills… The mountain (or is it a big hill) above Sierra Cortina and behind Terra Mitica offers a relatively easy to moderate climb and superb walk with some of very best views of Benidorm.

Located up in the Old Town, right at the top and often referred to as the Mirador. A little bit of a steep climb but well worth it when you see the beautiful panoramic views of both the bays. You can also access it from Mal Pas beach where there is a staircase which leads all the way up. A very pretty blue and white tiled gazebo with seating makes a lovely backdrop for a photo and the square has a selection of bars so you can take in the stunning scenery.

TAPAS ALLEY

If you are fed up of pie & chips and fancy a taste of the real Spain then head to Calle Santo Domingo – better known to all as “Tapas Alley” in the Old Town. The tapas are displayed behind glass and you can walk up and down pointing to whatever takes your fancy - the prices vary depending on which ones you choose but are generally between 1.50€ and 2.50€.

If you want to see Benidorm from a different perspective then pop to the Gran Hotel Bali in La Cala where you can go up to the panoramic view point on the 43rd floor - in a glass lift! PONIENTE PROMENADE

The brand new Poniente Promenade is the envy of every seaside resort and runs from the Old Town down towards La Cala. The promenade took over two years to complete and cost near on 20 million euros - but much of that was funding from the EU. The innovative multi coloured wave design won an architectural award and definitely worth seeing.

TERRA NATURA

More of a wildlife park than a zoo, with three zones: America, Asia and Europe and you can see animals native to those Continents living within their natural environment with shrubs and plants from their natural habitat. There are plenty of interactive activities going on throughout the day such as feeding the animals and for the more adventurous you can even Zip Wire across a 400metre stretch above the elephant plain.

A Benidorm landmark situated on the Sierra Helada mountains in the Rincon. The cross was erected in the 1950´s by residents and is 8 metres tall. A popular walk route taking ap 45 mins each way with breath taking views of the town.

Terra Natura – Buy 2 ge TERRA NATURA wildlife park in Benidorm is a must when here. The 32 hectare park is divided up into 3 zones; America, Asia and Europe so comfortable walking shoes are essential! Animals and plants typical of each continent can be seen within each region, making it not only an enjoyable visit but also an educational learning experience. The park runs a breeding programme for endangered animals and there are plenty of interactive activities going on throughout the day - for the more adventurous you can even Zip Wire across a 400 metre stretch above the elephant plain. The park is easy to get to – by public transport take the Llorente bus number 1 from anywhere along the Avd. Mediterraneo or the number 15 from La Cala or alternatively jump into a taxi (approximate 15 minute journey from the

THE CLIMB to the top takes about one hour on a rough well used loose stone. A few parts are quite steep. This is a walk for those who enjoy walking, not for those who prefer a Sunday stroll with a pub at the end of it! But, the rewards are panoramic (take a camera) scenes that very few people ever get an opportunity to view.

To start this lovely walk, take the Finestrat road (CV767) from Benidorm until you reach the roundabout where the entrance to the Sierra Cortina resort is, turn right (Calle Isla Gran Canaria) and park up 100m along the road where you will see a verge and a few trees on the left with a rough path heading upwards (obviously). Start you climb here. Do take lunch, water, first aid kit and wear decent walking footwear.

Once at the summit you can choose to simply enjoy the view or continue along the path for a further 5kms or so along the top and back again. The path across the summit is easy to follow and an easy to moderate walk. From here you can look down on Benidorm, Terra Mitica and take in the views as far as Alicante and Calpe.

You do not need to be very fit, 20kg overweight, an ex-smoker (50 a day) and 52 years of age still allowed me to get to the top of this little mountain. You will likely not be alone along the way. I met among others, three muscled cage fighters, three Hungarians with scary shotguns, various dog walkers, serious hiking folk and assorted tourists in various states of advanced sunburn! Perhaps not for everyone, but the calorie burn must exceed 1,000 and the idea of doing something different rather than the usual tourist stuff does appeal.

Baby Meerkat for Mundomar

MUNDOMAR, BENIDORM’S popular animal park, is delighted to announce a new arrival - the first birth of a baby Meerkat!

Mummy Meerkat had been hiding away in her den for a few days so park personnel were unaware of the baby’s appearance for a few days. Now out of its burrow, Baby is the centre of attention, just 15 inches in length and very cute. Simples!

hit, particularly with young families. There are lots of shows throughout the day and you can even book to swim with the sea lions or get up close to the dolphins. However, both of these need to be pre-booked. It is really easy to get to there: if driving the best place to head for is Benidorm Palace - then take the road almost opposite and it will take you all the way there - about a 2 minute drive. Parking is free. Or catch a public bus - either the number 1 or 11 - to take you straight to the entrance - but if there are four of you it will probably work out the same to take a taxi, especially if you are coming from Benidorm.

Rincon de Loix THE AREA often referred to as The Rincon is part of what is deemed the ‘New Town’, probably the most popular location with British holidaymakers.

IT IS certainly the life and soul of the resort and where you will find all the nightlife.

The vast, sandy beach is lined with bars and restaurants which are lively to say the least. You will definitely find all your home comforts here such as all day British breakfasts, UK television in most bars and fantastic value food and drink.

During the day you are spoilt for choice of activities. Here you will find Aqualandia, the biggest waterpark in Spain and Mundomar, a marine animal park, both at the far end and next door to each other. For the adventurous there is the cable water ski which is found at the beginning of the Levante beach – great for adrenalin junkies.

One of the most breath taking views to be had of resort must be from the top of the Sierra Helada, often referred to as ‘The Hill’. Many holidaymakers trek up to the top, where

you will find a Benidorm landmark: The Cross… just be aware that it’s a good 45-minute trek to the top!

Terra Mitica theme park is a great day trip with its exciting rides and shows, suitable for the entire family and not far away you will find Wildlife Park Terra Natura and beside it Aqua Natura, a smaller waterpark more suited for younger children. For golfers, the magnificent Villaitana golf course offers two 18-hole courses with a view of the Benidorm skyline.

Every Saturday night and held all year round is The Circus. Starting at 6pm and located behind Benidorm Palace, you will be captivated for over two hours (children are not compulsory to attend!)

And for a first class night out you cannot beat Benidorm Palace – probably the most visited attraction in Benidorm

and you are guaranteed a night to remember with its magnificent show. The Rincon is where you will find all the cabaret bars and nightclubs, open well into the early hours.

With the bars brimming over every night you will be spoilt for choice as to where to head. Most of the bars offer free entertainment and you can hear and watch a huge variety of very talented people ranging from singers, tribute groups and comedians catering to all tastes. And last but not least, the legend - Sticky Vicky!

The Old Town

Poniente/La Cala STARTING AT Parc del Elche in the Old Town, generally referred to as Dove Park due to the hundreds of white doves, is Poniente beach, which runs for more than 3km and finishes at La Cala. The promenade, which runs along the entire length of the beach, won an architectural award for its innovative multi-coloured wave design and is certainly worth seeing. This side of Benidorm is much quieter, so great if you just want to relax and unwind.

At the far end of Poniente you will find La Cala – which technically belongs to the town of Finestrat but everyone refers to it as Benidorm.

The skyline is dominated by two buildings – the Gran Hotel Bali and the newly constructed ‘Intempo’ twin towers, with its gold clad frontage, rumoured to be the tallest residential building in Europe.

Away from the beach you will find the La Marina indoor shopping centre – a great way to while away a few hours to enjoy some retail therapy whilst on the top floor there is a 10-pin bowling alley to keep the men and kids amused.

If you fancy a bit of a thrill head to Karting Finestrat – located behind the shopping centre on the mountain side with beautiful views over Benidorm.

THE OLD Town is located between the Levante and Poniente beaches, a far cry from the ‘British Square’ in the Rincon, that people associate with Benidorm.

THIS AREA is like stepping back in time – full of narrow, cobbled streets adorned with white washed houses and an abundance of boutiques, bars and restaurants.

Head toward the blue-domed church and at the top you will arrive at the lookout point, or Mirador as the locals would say. The climb up to the top is certainly worth it for the wonderful view of both bays. On your way back down, stop off at the famous Tapas Alley – which as the name suggests

is a street full of tapas bars. If you are fed up with pie and chips and fancy a real taste of Spain, this is where you should go.

The Old Town is also where you will find the Gay quarter – hugely popular for an alternative night out. A visit to the Rich Bitch Showbar and Kaffe Klee are a must if you appreciate drag humour and the many gay bars make everyone feel welcome and comfortable.

Mal Pas beach is located in the Old Town and it is from this harbour that you can catch a boat to both Tabarca Island and Calpe, great days out.

The Villa Lucia exhibition: the origin of residential tourism in Benidorm THE TOWN hall heritage department has inaugurated at the Espai d’Art Exhibition Hall ‘Villa Lucia: A Century of residential tourism, Levante beach’ - a journey through the life of Luis de Caceres with historical documents, photographs, drawings and personal items from his summer home in Benidorm.

Luis Caceres was born in Paris, later moving with his parents to Almeria in Spain. He dedicated his life to the army and became captain of the police in Alicante and an expert on the coastal areas of the Marina Baixa.

In 1905 he showed an interest in renting a house in Villajoyosa. He later chose a spot in Benidorm to build a second home, becoming one of the pioneers of the tourist resort of Playa de Levante. The house, named Villa Lucia in memory of his wife, who died in 1912, is situated near the police headquarters of Les Caletes on the beach.

Work began on 24th April 1913, even before the signing of a purchase agreement. The house, which now no longer exists, was located on the site of the present Don Vicente building. The purchase of the property began the close relationship of Luis de Caceres with Benidorm.

The exhibition will remain open until 13th December at the town hall and will later relocate to the Municipal Library.

Better known to the Brits as ‘Dove Park’, it can be found at the beginning of Poniente Beach on the edge of the Old Town, make sure to feed the birds!

A spectacular show incorporating a troupe of dancers and some amazing costumes on a par with the Moulin Rouge.

ON OUR own doorstep located just 30-40 minutes away, we have the award winning wine making region of Jalon.

Due to its altitude, protection from the mountains that surround it and the richness of its soil Jalon is one of the largest regions in Spain that produce the “Moscatel” wine, which is a sweet wine a little like sherry in its appearance and taste. The Muscat grape that produces the wine is also used to make raisins.

Jalon is not just famous for its wines though. The valley is lined with Almond trees and in February and March when the trees blossom the sea of pink & white blossom that covers the valley draws people by the coach load to see the beautiful sight.

On a Saturday Jalon plays host to one of the oldest and largets “rastros” (car boot sales) of the Costa that draws people from afar to rummage through the goods and antiques on sale and is also home to one of the finest British “Fish & Chip” shops to be found in this region.

HOW TO GET THERE? Jalon is easily found by car, taking the N332 North, towards Calpe and then continuing inland towards Benissa before turning off into the Valley itself and will take approximately 40 minutes. Although Jalon is not on any of the major bus routes from Benidorm, due to its popularity, it does feature as a stop on many of the excursions that leave Benidorm daily and during the blossom period you can also find specific trips that take in the sights.

Enrique Mendoz JUST 10 minutes outside of Bendiorm in the town of Alfaz del Pi, you can find the Mendoza family winery. The winery or “Bodega” as called here in Spain was born thanks to the families passion for wine and this passion has never stopped growing, seeing the winery increase in size and becoming one of the largest wine producers of this region, now producing some 300,000 bottles each year.

The Mendoza family want to share their passion of wine and have opened the doors of their pristine winery, offering daily visits from Tuesday to Saturday. The tours take approximately 1 ½ hours, during which time, you will be guided around the winery, explained the process of making the wines, the different types of grape used and of course, get to sample the finished product and enjoy a snack.

Tours of the winery are carried out in English and can be arranged between the hours of 10:00 till 12:00 and 16:00 and cost just 20.00€ per person. This includes, the tour, tasting of the wines, a snack and a bottle of wine produced at the winery.

A PLACE visited by many, but seen by few!

EACH YEAR literally thousands of Holiday makers visit Calpe, either on one of the many coach trips, or of course the relaxing mini-cruise from the port in Benidorm´s old town. However, very few people have actually seen Calpe!

Benidorm markets

ONE OF the things that remains unchanged in Spain are the weekly street markets. Decades ago these were even common in England, but with the advent of “Out of Town” shopping centres such as Westfield in London, Trafford Centre in Manchester and Meadowhall in Sheffield these have all but disappeared. However, in Spain they are still popular and almost every village or town has one.

One of the biggest on the Costa Blanca has to be in Benidorm - held twice a week due to its popularity - every Wednesday and Sunday. It is located at the far end of the new town, in the Rincon de Loix. In fact, there are actually two markets in Benidorm – the other one is near to the main train station in the Old Town, so depending where you are staying you can probably get to one without too much effort.

You will find everything there - from fruit and veg to clothes, bags, nik naks, jewellery, counterfeit designer goods .... but the golden rule is barter - especially with the

Say Hello Duckie!

OUR QUACKING reporter takes a flying visit to the top of the Old Town.

THIS MONTH Duckie flew over to the top of the old town, one of the MUST visit parts of Benidorm. No holiday here is complete without visiting Plaza Castilla in the old town a rocky outcrop to the front of the blue domed church a focal point of the town. As the name of the Plaza suggests there once stood a castle here. Sadly nothing remains, today the plaza offers a more sedate pastime than keeping out the likes of marauding pirates!

Enjoy a stroll through the old town streets and head up Calle Mayor which will take you to the Church of San Jaime where you will find the plaza. This is the best place to take in the views of both famous beaches, the Levante where the sun rises and Poniente where the sun sets. A great photo opportunity awaits! You will be unlikely to see any Ducks but you may meet some Seagull friends.

If you are feeling fit take the steps down to the viewing platform which is an ideal place to take a few snaps of the bay. Afterwards, perhaps take a much deserved pit stop at one of the terrace café bars who all serve great coffee and snacks if you are feeling peckish.

Plaza Castilla is a rather unique in Benidorm, it is far

removed from the brash and vibrant Rincon de Loix, a rare place for Benidorm where you can still enjoy some quiet reflection and a peaceful afternoon or evening.

One of the best times to visit is just before sunset. This is a perfect location to capture stunning brilliant sunsets as the sun goes down behind the mountains beyond the Poniente.

Alfaz has a great fruit and veg section at the far end and conveniently, the trusty number 10 will drop you off right at the start of the market. La Cala market is located not far from the Carrefour hypermarket in Finestrat and you can catch the number 2 bus from the centre of Benidorm to get there.

LA CALA & EL CISNE

La Cala market is next to the beach. El Cisne rastro is a flea market and has free live music to keep you entertained whilst you enjoy a drink and snack at the bar.

And also car boot type markets in La Nucia and Polop… you are really spoilt for choice on Sunday!

After your rest at one of the cafés take the steps down to the harbour, then head back through the old town via the pedestrian street for some shopping therapy perhaps.

HAVE YOU ever walked past bars in Benidorm with boards advertising “Eyes Down” and wondered why they don´t call it bingo.

THE REASON being, it is illegal to gamble in Spain outside of authorized establishments. If you do fancy a flutter pop into Bingo Plaza, which is the only fully legalised place to play bingo in Benidorm - located next to McDonalds on the Plaza Hispanidad, otherwise referred to as The Triangle, where the huge rubber tree is.

Bingo Plaza is open every day from 2pm until 2am - and on Friday and Saturday it stays open until 3am. Just like a casino you have to be over the age of 18 to enter and show photographic ID, it is best to take your passport. The number is recorded and you are then allowed to enter, which is free (the casino in Alicante charge 3 euros entry). You have to wait until the enter light above the door lights up... they do not allow you to go in whilst a game is in progress.

What you will find rather strange is that they are not allowed to advertise what the prize money is outside of the building. In the UK, places such as Gala Bingo have huge billboards plastered up with the jackpot prize, but here in Spain it is not allowed. It is not until you enter the huge hall that you can see the prize money advertised on screens around the room.

You will be quite shocked as to how large and plush it is upon entering inside – it has a seating capacity for 600, spread across 100 round tables. Each table has 6 chairs and

set flush into the middle of the table is an LED monitor, allowing you to follow the progress of the numbers as they are called. Each table has marker pens so you don´t need to worry about bringing your own pens.

Each game lasts about 5 minutes - there are prizes for 1 complete line (5 numbers) then onto a full house. There are between 10 and 12 games per hour, so as you can tell its quite fast paced! The numbers are called in Spanish but if you are not familiar with the language just watch the screen.

When you have a complete line you shout “linea” or “line” and hold up your hand. Someone will come to you and leave a marker on your table then the game continues till full house is called. You are given your prize money there and then in cash at the end of the game. If there is more than one winner then the prize pot is shared, which is the same as in the UK. People come and go after each game as they please. The prize money is dependent on how many people are playing... the more people the bigger the prize pot. Throughout the day they also have extra bonus jackpots... for instance, the first game of each day has a full house bonus of 1000 euros on top of the normal win - this is to entice people to come when it first opens at 2pm.

Before the start of each game an attendant will walk around the room selling bingo cards for that game. One

card costs 1.50€ but there are some bonus games which are 2€ each ... these obviously have bigger prizes. You can play as many cards as you want per game, but to begin with stick with one till you get the hang of it! After the game has finished the attendants walk around again for the next game... you can play as often as you want.

On each table you will also find a button to summon a waiter to order drinks and there is even an option to eat there – you won´t believe how cheap it is either. During the day a 3 course menu del dia is 3.60€ which includes a drink and in the evening it is only 3€. You can also order a sandwich which comes with chips and a drink for 4€ - the prices are heavily subsidised and the quality top class, so no need to leave the premises to eat. Why not give it a go – just remember to take your passport.

The Duchess Neil’s Brasserie

THIS MONTH the Duke and I were invited by two of our friends to dine at Neil’s Brasserie: Neil’s is situated just off the Levante Beach, towards the Old Town end and has what one might call a ‘side sea view’ in Plaza del Torrejo 5.

Upon arrival, just after nine, our table was ready and menus were presented as usual. We ordered a bottle of house white at 9€ a bottle. Later in the meal we decided to check out the wine list which I must say was comprehensive and very reasonable priced. We chose a white Marqués de Cáceres for just 1€extra at 10€; fantastic value for that wine although the house wine was fine.

Bread sticks and alioli were served and our order taken. We all opted for the set menu at 12.95€ for three courses, a selection of approximately 12 choices for each course but they also have an international ‘a la carte’ menu. There’s also a vegetarian selection and more up and coming these days gluten free options.

I chose the Chicken Curried Bacon Salad served warm and just the right quantity for a starter. The Duke had the Black Pudding with Caramelized Mushrooms and Onions, again nicely presented. Our friends opted for the home made Fish Cakes with

Ginger and the Prawn Wrap served in a cream sauce.

For the mains three of us went for the Moroccan Lamb which we expected to be served in a ‘tajine’ but came plated. It was really our fault for jumping to that conclusion, we should have asked. It was equally as nice, plated small-diced lamb with the usual Moroccan flavored sauce accompanied by white rice, fresh vegetables and sautéed potatoes.

Our other friend ordered the Chicken Pasta in a creamy sauce. Only I opted for a dessert which was a Snickers Tart - an ice cream tart containing nuts served with fresh cream.

The bill came to 70.65€ which included two bottles of wine, which we all thought was good value for money.

The service was attentive but you didn’t feel rushed. It’s a nice restaurant to enjoy a relaxing evening, especially this time of the year but be sure to book in advance if you want a terrace table as it does get very busy .Please call for opening times during the summer months: Tel 646 024 196.

Crissy Rocks Benidorm Old Town Homemade cooking

IN BENIDORM’S Old Town in an area known as ‘The Triangle’ a new bar has opened that promises to be a little special.

Fronted by our very own Queen of Benidorm, Crissy Rock, award-winning actress, comedienne, author, artist and star of the hit television series Benidorm and full of personal mementos and memorabilia from her days on set and time in the Jungle, Crissy truly has created a ‘Fun Pub’ and hopes to spend as much time there as possible.

Chrissy feels very lucky in persuading the family team of Pauline & Steve to carry out the management the bar and their wealth of experience running other bars in the area has so far proved invaluable.

There are a wide range of drinks now complimented by Pauline’s excellent homemade cooking combining home comforts with more extravagant dishes all for a reasonable price.

The restaurant’s popularity is doubtless due to its excellent menu choice and customer service. A choice of three menus of the day is on offer (all with five courses) starting at only 11.95€.

Included is a ½ bottle of wine, bread, alioli and tapas on arrival.

Starters include Chilli and Garlic Prawns, Blue Cheese & Walnut Salad or Smoked Salmon Roulade. Main courses include Sirloin Steak, Tuna Steak and Chicken Breast stuffed with Mozzarella & Pesto. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday a special four course menu is offered for only 9.50€, including a ½ bottle of wine, bread, ali-oli and tapas on arrival.

The Restaurant Brisa del Mar is down the hill from the Cambank/Solbank, just off the main street in Albir: open lunchtimes only on Sunday 12.30pm – 3pm and other evenings from 6.30pm till 9.30pm: closed Tuesdays.

in 1968 and quickly became a rendezvous for visiting celebrities as well as a regular favourite for Benidorm’s discerning resident gourmets.

Traditional English meals served in a friendly atmosphere

Long established British bar, O’Maras, in the old town of Benidorm, has just undergone a major refurbishment and is now open.

Dave, Jan and Ian are pleased to welcome customers old and new to their bar, which offers a menu of typical British pub fare as well as a good English breakfast. In fact it is often said that “they don’t serve fast food, they just do good food as fast as they can”.

Apart from the large regular menu, O’Maras serves up a daily “specials” board, and is also well known for their excellent Sunday lunches, and a word to the wise, booking in advance to avoid disappointment will ensure you a seat.

Believe it or not Granny’s Tea House has been in Benidorm (Old Town) since 1981, you´ll find us near Dove Park, tucked away just off the walking street, going towards the church.
