Welcome to Benidorm!

NOVEMBER IS one of the most popular months of the year for festivals and Benidorm is one of the most attractive places to be when these celebrations are taking place, as residents organise traditional recreational and religious events through the Committee of Overseers and the Clubs Association.

THERE IS a generous helping of fun mixed with the pomp and ceremony and always a great opportunity to observe age old traditions while at the same time socialising with friends, family and of course Benidorm’s constant stream of visitors as they enjoy the parties and feasts of San Jaime and la Virgen del Sufragio.

Benidorm is decked out in style for these celebrations as the city bursts with colour from 9th to 13th of the month. The festivities close with an impressive fireworks display that can be seen from many points along the Poniente beach and all over the city.

But for British visitors the party does not end there . On Thursday14th November, the Rincon de Loix will host a special celebration featuring wonderful costumes and a fantastic party atmosphere throughout the day.

On behalf of the city I invite everyone to enjoy this colourful month of festivals, offering you all a warm Benidorm welcome and ‘Bones Fiestas’ to all!

Benidorm - Exploding the myths BENIDORM’S IMAGE in the British press is portrayed as a resort full of cheap boozers. Let’s lay to rest a few of the old war horses that the media insists on riding over Europe’s single most popular holiday destination…

In 1954 Pedro Zaragoza Orts, Mayor of Benidorm, created the ‘Plan General de Ordenación’, guaranteeing every building an area of leisure land. From the top of the Sierra Helada, the promontory at the end of the Rincon de Loix, you can get a stunning view of how green the city is.

Not true. This was a joke by a tour rep in the 70s: his comment passed into media history. The resort’s seven kilometres of silky soft sand are absolutely natural - the city supplies high-grade sand to a number of other local resorts.

BENIDORM ISLAND IS THE MISSING CHUNK OUT OF THE PUIG CAMPANA MOUNTAIN

It´s true that there is a huge chunk missing but alas it is not in the sea! The island is in fact a continuation of the nearby Sierra Helada mountain range, which surfaces in the sea and is clearly visible from the 2 Benidorm beaches. The triangular shape is 350 metres long by 250 metres wide and you can take a boat trip out to the island. It is a protected marine and nature reserve which attracts a huge population of pigeons. The island is also called Peacock Island by many.

BENIDORM IS FULL OF FISH AND CHIP SHOPS

Benidorm has very few - you’ll find Rays I in the Old Town and Rays just off the AVD. Meditterraneo. The Jolly Whale you’ll find on the Levante beach front. Thanks to the draw the resort has it is possible to sample the cuisine of almost every nation as well as regional Spanish dishes.

IN BENIDORM YOU BARELY HEAR A SPANISH ACCENT

Benidorm actually has a large number of ex pat residents but has always been the major resort for internal tourism – and far from never hearing a Spanish accent you can hear virtually every accent, dialect and language of Spain.

Nope - the harbour is too shallow. However, Benidorm has always been linked with the sea, providing the most skilled crews in the whole of the Mediterranean for the Almadraba, the complex method by which tuna have been caught since Phoenician times.Benidorm has more hotel stars than the whole of Greece, an average of 315 sunny days a year and almost nil atmospheric pollution. No wonder the resort has such a high occupancy rate.

AIRLINE NUMBERS

ALSA BUSES

This is the bus which runs to Alicante airport.

You can catch it from either the Avda Europa, outside the Europa Clinica or from the bus station. Departs hourly and on the hour from Avda Europa from 7am until 10pm – but there is NO bus at 9pm: costs 9.45€ one way.

BANKS

In Spain banks only open for half a day, so make sure you go in the morning. Normal opening hours are 8.15am till 2pm, no Saturday opening. All banks have an ATM with an option to change the language into English – press the ‘cambio idiomas’ option.

BRITISH CONSULATE This is located in Alicante – Edf Espacio, Rambla Mendez Nuñez, 6th Floor, Alicante 03002. Open Monday to Friday from 8.30am until 1.30pm. In an emergency contact 965 216 002: if you have lost or had your passport stolen you will need to go there to obtain an emergency travel document to get you back to the UK, which will take about two hours to process. It will only be valid for that one journey and costs approximately 120€.

BUSES

The local bus service is run by Llorente. You pay the driver and the cost is 1.50€ regardless of distance. Generally the buses run until midnight. The following buses, which all stop on the main Avd Mediterraneo, are probably the ones which you will find most useful - but with baggage you would need to take a taxi as you are not allowed to take luggage onto local public buses.

BUSINESS HOURS

Most large stores stay open all day but smaller independant shops, particularly in the Old Town will shut at 2pm for lunch then re-open at 5pm until 8pm.

Shops are normally closed on Sundays except for small food stores which open until 2pm.

CHEMISTS

In Spain they are called a ‘Farmacia’. There is a 24hour farmacia on the main Avd Mediterraneo and the staff speaks English. Many local farmacias close over the lunch period from 1.30, re-opening at 5pm. If you need any sort of medication, including asprin or paracetamol, you can only buy them here: supermarkets are not allowed to sell any kind of medicine.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

There are plenty of currency exchange bureau´s in Benidorm. You will need to show your passport the first time thenyou will receive a card to show for subsequent visits, so there is no need to carry your passport with you. Reputable establishments include Eurochange who have several branches, Sheila´s at the indoor market and Wine Barrel on the Avd Mediterraneo. Bank rates are not as good as the exchange bureau´s . Hotels offer the poorest rate so only use for emergencies.

DOCTOR

If you have your EHIC – European Health Insurance Card you are entitled to see the social security doctor free of charge in an emergency, but you must also present your passport with the card. There are two ‘Centro de Salud’ (health centres) in Benidorm you can attend: Rincon de Loix - On Avd Derramador near to the Indoor market Foiettes in the Old Town - Calle Venuzuela La Cala - Avda de Benisa

Again only open for half a day: Monday to Friday 8.30am till 2.30pm and on Saturday 9.30am till 1pm. The post office is located on Avda de L’Aiguera, near the Town Hall in the Old Town.

HOSPITALS

There is only one social security hospital covering Benidorm – the Hospital Marina Baixa, which is actually located in Villa Joyosa, a short distance from the centre of Benidorm (just past La Cala).

However, there are two private hospitals in the centre of Benidorm – you will have to pay for any treatment or you can use your travel insurance if covered.

REPORTING A CRIME

SATE The Foreign Tourist Assistance Office.

If you are unfortunate enough to become a victim of crime this is ideally where you should go to report it.

Located on the first floor of the Tourist Information Office, at the very end of the Poniente Beach in the Old Town. Open Monday to Friday from 9am until 9pm and from 10am until 2pm over the weekend.

They have interpreters on hand and the use of a telephone to call relatives and your insurance company free of charge.

The 24-hour helpline is 902 102 112.

Benidorm the new destination for medical tourism

Spain: The preferred destination for Brits buying abroad

by Jan Gamm PRIVATE CLINICS and hotels in Benidorm are to promote medical tourism in the city, concentrating on Russia and the rest of the EU. Two private hospitals in Benidorm as well as members of the Tourism Foundation are to attend trade fairs with the aim of creating a new market for private medical treatments with insurances offered covering attractive medical packages and wellness programmes.

The city is emerging as an ideal destination for the promotion of health and wellness with its excellent spa facilities, warm climate and a full range of medical treatments and therapies available to aid a swift recuperation plan.

MULTI-LINGUAL Brochures are being prepared in English, Spanish, Dutch, Russian, Swedish and French outlining the full range of treatments and specialised interventions available.

The main patrons of the Foundation and representatives of the Hospital Clínica Benidorm (HCB) and IMED Levante Hospital, presented the initiative on Tuesday 29th October, launched to coincide with the introduction of a new European Directive

on cross-border healthcare finalised on 25th October, allowing any EU citizen to undergo treatments or surgery in another member country.

FACILITIES Besides the two private clinics with first class medical services there are 18 hotels and 12 medical centres available that offer wellness and recovery, some with approved programmes for post-surgical treatments after hospital discharge.

And arrangements may also be made for accompanying friends and family.

TWO THIRDS of prospective purchasers who sought advice from Foreign Office property experts at the ‘A Place In The Sun’ show at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham recently said their preferred destination was Spain.

Foreign Office advisers included Alicante Consul Paul Rodwell and British Embassy Madrid property expert Bernadette Gallagher, who spoke to a total of 2,209 people considering buying abroad.

A record two-thirds (66%) wanted advice about purchasing in Spain, with 24% considering France and the remainder of 10% undecided. And four out of five people said they found the advice very useful, particularly liking the fact that the advice was impartial and free.

The Foreign Office team concentrated on three key areas: Follow the Foreign Office property buyers’ checklist before moving abroad (take your time; rent first; access healthcare correctly; consider the impact of moving exchange rates on your savings, etc.) Take independent advice on your purchase (legal advice, following the buyers’ checklist) Check out the wealth of information on www.GOV.UK about pensions and benefits abroad and living in a specific country Expatriates with friends or family considering buying a property in Spain could help by pointing them towards a new Foreign Office video on YouTube and the Foreign Office’s How to buy property in Spain guidance on www.GOV.UK. ‘Bargains in the Sun’, which aired on ITV at 8.30pm (Spanish time) on 3rd October, looked at how, with property prices falling in southern Europe, many Brits are starting to re-think owning a place in the sun.

And broadcasters of ‘A Place in the Sun’ said visitor numbers were well up on last year, suggesting increasing interest amongst Brits in buying abroad. More than 12,000 homes in Spain have been bought by Brits over the past three years.

Benidorm Fiestas

9th – 13th November

by Irena Bodnarec FIESTAS FEATURE strongly in Spanish culture and every year towns and villages up and down the country celebrate at various times of the year. The annual fiesta is a celebration of the local Patron Saint – which for Benidorm is the Virgin of the Sufragio and San Jaime Apostle (they have two) and religion features heavily. The event dates back to 1740 when an image of the Virgin was found in the remains of a burnt out fishing boat, which was taken up to the church. A re-enactment of this played out every year on the Poniente beach on the first official day of the fiesta at about 5pm followed by a procession up to the San Jaime church at the top of the Old Town.

There are special prayers and church services throughout the 5 days fiesta, which begins on Saturday 9th November. Every morning cannons will be fired at 8am and at 2pm in the Plaza Triangular, which is at the top of the Avd Mediterraneo, masceltas – Spanish firecrackers are set off, but be warned, they are very loud! The streets are transformed, particularly in the Old Town and are deco-

rated with flowers whilst religious paintings are hung from the balconies.

Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th are official Bank Holidays in the town and banks and government offices will all be shut. There will be bell ringing, open air concerts, bands playing and flower offerings over these days and each evening the locals will be partying – often into the early hours of the morning so don´t expect much sleep, especially if staying in the Old Town! On the first 3 days there are solemn processions in the early evening through the streets, with many of the locals taking part.

The most interesting and visual day is the last – Wednesday 13th. There is a parade through the Old Town, setting off at around 5pm with plenty of floats representing all the penyas, which finishes at the Plaza Triangular. Then the grand finale is a magnificent firework display, set off from the Poniente beach – by the Parc del Elche at 9pm.

Spectators gather in their hundreds and a good vantage point is up at the Mirador where there is a real party atmosphere. Most years there is a funfair up by the bullring which is open during the entire fiesta period.

British Fancy Dress Day – 14th November NOW BECOME somewhat of a tradition, the British fancy Dress Day is held the day after the end of the official Benidorm fiesta and always falls on a Thursday. This year that date is Thursday 14th November.

WHAT STARTED off as a small event with a handful of Brits has escalated and probably become the biggest fancy dress party in Europe. Last year thousands descended on the town especially for this one day, dressed in an amazing assortment of outfits - the event has certainly been cemented in the Town Hall fiesta calendar now.

Costume wise anything goes – the effort that everyone goes to is incredible, with some outfits easy to identify and some not quite so! The majority of people actually bring their outfits over with them in their luggage, which looking at them is hard to believe – certainly not in hand luggage anyway. Considering the amount of people attending it is amazing that there are hardly ever any duplicates of costumes or characters.

The main meeting point is in The Square, around Sinatras and Champions ,but the crowds spill out way past this area and many of the surrounding roads are taped off by the local police, allowing the revelers to safely wonder into the street. The crossroads of Tiki City and Andy´s is always packed – from mid afternoon until well into the early hours with much drinking and partying taking place!

The day after the Fancy Dress Day there is a free giant paella for everyone courtesy of Manolo... the owner of Sinatra´s and the man who started the Fancy Dress phenomenon some 20 years ago. Back then he use to give anyone who had dressed up a free drink - can you imagine that now with the number of people that turn up! So instead of free drinks, which is unfeasible, he lays on a free paella for everyone.

There are specialist companies that do this... in fact many towns and villages do it during fiesta time. Its amazing to see - many find it just as interesting to watch it being made as to actually eating it.

The quantities used are unbelievable as the paella is big enough to feed 700 people! In case you are thinking of reproducing it the measurements are: 120 kilos of meat - a mixture of chicken and pork; 70 kilos of vegetables and 80 kilos of rice - plus you will need a rather large paella pan! As the smell floats across the Square and the paella nears completion, the lunch queues start to form – and very generous portions they are too. If you would like a taste then head down to the The Square for around 2pm on the Friday – assuming you have recovered enough from the night before!

Pink Benidorm BENIDORM OLD Town is quickly developing into a popular destination hotspot for gay and lesbian travellers and will soon be competing with the likes of Gran Canaria, Mykonos and Sitges – already well established resorts.

Entertainment wise the definite must see shows in Benidorm both happen to be drag acts in the Old Town – the Rich Bitch Showbar and Kafee Klee which attract masses of visitors every night.

But one of the most anticipated events and bringing the entire community together is the ever growing Benidorm Pride – this year held at the beginning of September with the main Pride Procession on Saturday 14th. The turnout was incredible and embraced by everyone, turning into a real carnival like atmosphere.

Benidorm is a very open and cosmopolitan resort and takes pride in embracing everyone, regardless of sexuality, creed or colour – and is reflected in the numbers that continue to head here year after year.

Don’t let your Dream Home get swept away by Spanish Inheritance Tax! MOST PROPERTY owners are unaware that their beneficiaries and estate may have to pay Inheritance Tax in their country of domicile and in Spain.

SPANISH LAW dictates the beneficiary of your estate must pay tax on the amount that they inherit.

This tax is not a fixed rate and is determined by the relationship to the deceased, residency status and existing wealth in Spain. In addition, the estate of the deceased could be liable to pay Inheritance Tax in their country of domicile.

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS TO MINIMISE THE LIABILITY? We have known cases where property owners in Spain have been advised to prepare a Spanish Will to avoid the tax, as the tax is paid by the person inheriting the asset the existence of a Will does nothing to minimise this. It is key for all British owners of Spanish property to have a UK Will dealing with their worldwide assets, making another Will elsewhere unnecessary.

Another misconception is that by mortgaging the property it will reduce the tax liability on

death. It is true that the value of the asset will be reduced by the amount outstanding on the mortgage. However, Banks often insist that life policies are taken out which pay off the mortgage on death and the beneficiaries are back to inheriting the whole of the unencumbered property. Even if there is not a life policy there is a substantial debt outstanding which is required to be paid before the property can be transferred.

The most dangerous option is to transfer the property to your children / beneficiaries now. Spanish tax is payable on the inheritance of a property but also upon gifting so the tax would be paid immediately.

Also once the property is in the names of your beneficiaries you have to trust that they will not dispose or charge your asset leaving you homeless.

Benidorm Half Marathon

THE STREETS of Benidorm will be pounded on Sunday 24th November as the town´s 30th annual Half Marathon takes place. The starting line of this popular event is the Town Hall square in the Old Town at 10am. The route stretches from the far side of the Poniente beach to the end of Levante and almost up to Albir before looping back on itself – all the affected roads will be closed to traffic. The event attracts participants from around the world, including renowned marathon runners from Italy, Cuba and obviously Spain. Last years race was won by a resident Spaniard in 1.07.44 and following closely behind was Brit Joe Bailey from Salford who managed a very respectable 1.11.27.

To make this 30th anniversary even more special, an exhibition of memorabilia and photographs from previous marathons will be on display at the Town Hall – and winners from bygone years will be there to recount their experiences. If you plan on going to cheer the contestants along make your way anywhere along the beach promenade for a great view.

The hotel

OFTEN OVERLOOKED by many visitors due to the location on the edge of town, however the Hotel De Loix is clearly one of the better choices and is simply perfect for a weekend break where you just want to chill by the pool all day and venture out at night. This is a low-rise hotel big on style with superb hanging gardens and a lush tropical internal featured garden too. There is a real feeling of space with modern furniture in the reception and café bar which creates an awesome atmosphere. This is no ordinary hotel, this is somewhere very special and quite unique in Benidorm. Staff were all friendly too.

The rooms

You get big here! Big rooms, big balconies and big views of the surrounding mountains and countryside. All 188 rooms are furnished in a minimalist but functional style making that big space feel even bigger! Every room comes with a comfy sofa which is great for couples and for families with either one or two children the sofa quickly converts into a bed for the kids.

Internet is a decent speed and cost just 5€ per week.

The food

A buffet restaurant offering a good selection for breakfast, more continental with less hot selection than us Brits prefer, but nice enough. Evening meals include an abundant selection of fresh salad plus a choice of fish and meats from the hot buffet. Wine by the glass comes in at under 2€ and a big bottle of water just

3€ so inexpensive for drinks with your meals. Lots of fresh fruit and sticky deserts. All in all always something nice to eat and perfect for a long weekend, probably get a bit dull after a week but buffets always do.

The pools

A nice big pool awaits you with plenty of sunbeds plus an excellent Kids pool located in a shaded position so you don´t have to worry about the Kids roasting away in the sun! For those who prefer their breaks child free there is an Adult only pool on the rooftop, a huge bonus to be honest. The indoor pool is fantastic (obligatory silly hats only 2.50€) with some nice features. Pool towels are available for a 1€ fee. They keep the pool area closed until 10am, to stop the annoying folks putting towels out before breakfast.

What you should know

The walk to the beach takes 20 minutes on the flat, regular buses stop outside the hotel to take you down to the beach and back (Taxis cost about 6€). Benidorm Palace is across the road for a superb dinner and show experience (a must) and Aqualandia and Mundomar just a 10 minute walk behind the hotel. The road leading into Benidorm is littered with bars and cafés including the popular Levi´s Showboat for some fun nights out. From September onwards expect mainly couples and very few children.

This is not a hotel with lots of groups so unlikely to encounter any Hens or Stags here, hoorah! Enjoy, we did.

Go shopping!

Old Town The Old Town is a great place to start. Calle Gambo, the pedestrianised street that begins at the Plaza Triangular, where the huge rubber tree is, has a great selection of popular boutiques such as Masimo Dutti – a must for fashion-savvy customers, and Zara, which is now everyone’s favourite High Street fashion hit: even the Duchess of Cambridge and Coleen Rooney want to be seen in this leading Spanish fashion brand.

The prices tend to work out cheaper here in Spain even taking into account the exchange rate, so it is certainly worth a visit. One well-known English name here and one you will be familiar with is Specsavers - the UK’s most popular opticians, run by Phillip, a British ex-pat.

Paseo de la Carretera is another must-do street and will take you all the way to Elche Park. One quirky shop which will catch your eye is Ale Hop – easily spotted as all the branches have a massive cow outside! Here you will find accessories, gifts, unusual novelties and decor at very affordable prices. Ladies, if you are looking for a fabulous ball gown, make sure you pop into Bambu where you will be amazed at the array of styles and colours on offer – and so much cheaper than the UK!

Not forgetting the boys and budding Rambos among you, if you have a passion for guns and military bits then stop off at Europa.

One shop which you will not be able to resist walking into is Bartolucci – a fairytale toyshop offering hand-made wooden toys of exceptional quality. You will not be able to resist the adorable painted wooden objects such as clocks, door plates and pictures frames, which can all be personalised – any child would be delighted with a gift from here.

AVENIDA MEDITERRANEO

The Avd Mediterraneo, which runs all the way from the Rincon de Loix up to the edge of the Old Town, is lined with an array of shops. Tobacco shops for your cigarette and spirit supply to take back home – the biggest range is found at EuroTobacco; leather shops selling beautiful quality coats and jackets for ladies and gents; Lottery shops if you fancy a flutter on the Euro Millions and plenty of souvenir shops selling typical holiday mementos.

LA MARINA La Marina Shopping Centre offers a broad selection of shops in an air conditioned environment. Known as ‘Centro Comercial La Marina’, it has shops and restaurants and even an entertainment complex on the top floor. C&A, a UK department store which disappeared from the UK High Street some years back, you will still find here – and particularly popular with visiting Brits. There is an excellent Zara Home selling gorgeous home accessories; a home store called Casa where you can buy all manner of kitchen gadgets and knick knacks for the home; Mango; H&M; Stradivarius; Pimkie and Benetton for trendy fashion; Druni and Douglas – both selling beauty products and perfume … and that’s just a handful of what is on offer. You can easily spend hours browsing around here.

TERRA NATURA 0 More of a wildlife park than a zoo, with three zones: America, Asia and Europe and you can see animals native to those Continents living within their natural environment with shrubs and plants from their natural habitat. There are plenty of interactive activities going on throughout the day such as feeding the animals and for the more adventurous you can even Zip Wire across a 400metre stretch above the elephant plain.

AQUALANDIA 1 The largest water park in Europe and one of Benidorm’s favourite attractions for all ages. The coloured water slides are an iconic sight on the Benidorm skyline - known as ‘Big Bang’ they offer different levels of intensity and adrenalin surges and now you can enjoy the newly opened ‘Vertigo’ slide, the highest capsule slide in the world!

There is also a special area for the younger visitors to enjoy. One of the great things about Aqualandia is that you can take your own food and drink in - unlike other attractions. Families come laden down in the morning with multiple cool boxes full of food and drink for the day. .

AQUA NATURA WATER PARK 2 Located beside Terra Natura Wildlife Park is Aqua Natura - smaller than Aqualandia but there is certainly no shortage of slides, plumes and activities to keep you amused. An added bonus is that twice daily they have a free Sea Lion show there - at 1.30pm and 4pm which lasts a little over half an hour followed by an opportunity to have a ‘Sea Lion Experience’ where you can swim and play with them – you need to prebook this.

BALCON DEL MEDITERRANEO 3 Located up in the Old Town, right at the top and often referred to as the Mirador. A little bit of a steep climb but well worth it when you see the beautiful panoramic views of both the bays. You can also access it from Mal Pas beach where there is a staircase which leads all the way up. A very pretty blue and white tiled gazebo with seating makes a lovely backdrop for a photo and the square has a selection of bars so you can take in the stunning scenery.

BENIDORM HARBOUR 4 Various boat departures for an adventurous day out. From here you can catch the hourly glass bottomed boat to Benidorm Island which departs from 10am until 5pm. Or try the mini cruise to Calp which takes you on a picturesque tour of the coast, passing by Albir, Altea and some small hidden coves – a daily service departing Benidorm at 11.30am and returning from Calpe at 4.30pm. For the more adventurous how about a boat trip to Tabarca Island, sometimes referred to as ‘Flat Island’. Officially it is a protected marine reserve and very popular with snorkelers and scuba divers. Departs from Benidorm on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at 10.30am and arrives back at 6.30pm (weather allowing).

BENIDORM CIRCUS 5 You will find ‘The Big Top’ behind Benidorm Palace - a well known landmark in the town. It has been a permanent fixture there for the last three years and can accommodate 850 people. The tent is totally wheelchair friendly with the installation of ramps for easy access to the ringside, with heating and air conditioning to ensure a comfortable evening.

There are NO animals in any of the performances - the show is based around a dramatic mix of traditional circus acts but also incorporates highly skilled performers.

In total there are 45 dancers and performers training three times a week for the weekly show: every Saturday evening starting at 6pm.

The show lasts for two hours with a quick 10 minute break half way through giving you time to pop to the bar for a drink or stock up on that circus favourite - popcorn!

There are no seat reservations so get there early to nab the best ringside seats. There is ample free parking outside so there is no issue trying to find a space.

BENIDORM PALACE 6 For a first class night out you cannot beat Benidorm Palace - voted Europe’s best cabaret theatre and nightclub for 2012, beating the likes of Moulin Rogue in Paris!

It is probably the most visited attraction in Benidorm and you are guaranteed a night to remember. A magnificent show lasting 3 hours incorporates a troupe of dancers with the most amazing costumes you are ever likely to see.

So what can you expect from a night at the Palace?

You have two options - go for the full experience and have a meal first or you can just go for the show. Doors open at 8.30pm and there is always a queue of people waiting. For those coming to watch the show only you can arrive a little later as the show does not begin until 10pm.

CABLE SKI 7 For the daring head to the end of the Levante Beach at the Rincon de Loix where you will find the cable ski. Instead of being pulled by a boat you are pulled by an overhead cableski system. It is most definately the coolest and safest way to experience an extreme watersport. Open until 1st November – the only requirements are that you can swim and are over the age of 6. You can book anything from 4 individual circuits to a 5 days pass – they even offer lessons. An adventure you are never likely to forget.

CHURCH OF SAN JAIME AND SANTA ANA 8 The distinctive blue domed roof is located up at the Mirador.

Built in the 18th Century it is dedicated to the patron saint of the town and a statue of the Virgin del Sufragio can be seen inside the church. Last year the church controversially spent 332,000 euros on a new organ which takes pride of place in the gallery.

FESTILANDIA 9 Amusement Park right in the middle of Benidorm on the Avda Mediterraneo. Open every evening from 6.30pm until

very late it will keep younger children excited and entertained – offering fairground type rides and games. You can also hop on the Festilandia train directly outside – 5€ for adults and 3€ for children which will take you around the streets to see the sights.

INTEMPO 10 The magnificent ‘M Tower’, or Intempo building, is a definite landmark on the Poniente side of the Benidorm skyline.

Officially the tallest residencial building in Europe, its 45 floors span 180metres in height. Visually it looks stunning with its gold clad facade reflecting the sun but it is still under construction, with no definite completion date.

KARTING FINESTRAT 11 If you fancy a bit of a thrill head to Karting Finestrat - located just behind Carrefour Hyper-market and the Marina Shopping Centre in Benidorm.

Alternatively, get a double kart so that you can take your child for a spin! You are provided with a helmet and given safety instructions on how to drive the kart before driving off, so don’t worry if you have never driven one before! if your stomach can take it after that adrenalin rush!

L’AIGUERA PARK 12 Neoclassical designed park sandwiched between the Town Hall and bullring. It has two amphitheatres which during the summer months host shows, concerts and cultural Spanish events.

MAL PAS BEACH 13 A tiny, sandy cove reached from the bottom of the Old Town just past Elche Park - better known as Dove Park. Ideal if you want a relaxing quiet break away from the crowds – there is a selection of mainly Spanish bars and restaurants nearby.

MARITIME CULTURAL CENTRE 14 Located just past Elche Park heading towards Mal Pas Beach: contains interesting artifacts, models and pictures associated with the sea. Open Monday to Friday from 9am - 2pm then 4pm - 6pm. Saturday it is open mornings only and it is closed on Sunday: entry is free.

MUNDOMAR 15 A marine animal park which also has exotic animals - a great hit, particularly with young families. There are lots of shows throughout the day and you can even book to swim with the sea lions or get up close to the dolphins. However, both of these need to be pre-booked. It is really easy to get to there: if driving the best place to head for is Benidorm Palace - then take the road almost opposite and it will take you all the way there - about a 2 minute drive. Parking is free. Or catch a public bus - either the number 1 or 11 - to take you straight to the entrance - but if there are four of you it will probably work out the same to take a taxi, especially if you are coming from Benidorm.

Here you can sit and ‘people watch’ with a massive population of white doves which you can feed – very popular with the Spanish.

PEACOCK ISLAND

The giant rock jutting out directly in front of the Levante beach is ap 4 km from the shore. You can

catch a glass bottomed boat from the marina at Mal Pas which gives you some amazing views of the reef and fish then explore the wildlife and bird population on the island.

THE CROSS ON THE HILL

A Benidorm landmark situated on the Sierra Helada mountains in the Rincon. The cross was erected in the 1950´s by residents and is 8 metres tall. A popular walk route taking ap 45 mins each way with breath taking views of the town.

TAPAS ALLEY 19 If you are fed up of pie & chips and fancy a taste of the real Spain then head to Calle Santo Domingo – better known to all as “Tapas Alley” in the Old Town. It is so named because the entire street is made up of tapas bars! The biggest and probably most popular is “La Cava Aragonesa” which has a constant stream of visitors - both locals and tourists. Here the selection is vast to say the

least, in fact most are so beautifully presented that they look like little works of art. The tapas are displayed behind glass and you can walk up and down pointing to whatever takes your fancy - the prices vary depending on which ones you choose but are generally between 1.50€ and 2.50€. A hint to tell if a tapas bar is good is to look at the floor - if there are lots of serviettes screwed up and thrown down that means its good - really!

TERRA MITICA 20 Costa Blanca’s answer to Alton Towers. A theme park which is divided into five themed zones – plenty of rides and shows to keeps all ages amused including some great water rides. Terra Mitica has a new swim section with a Jacuzzi area so remember to bring your swimming gear.

There is lots of walking to be done so be prepared and wear sensible shoes.

PONIENTE PROMENADE The brand new Poniente Promenade is the envy of every seaside resort and runs from the Old Town down towards La Cala. The promenade took over two years to complete and cost near on 20 million euros - but much of that was funding from the EU. The innovative multi coloured wave design won an architectural award and definitely worth seeing.

Much thought has gone into the concept, with a wide parade for walkers and steps and ramps leading down to the beach at regular intervals. There are plenty of bars and restaurants along the front, enabling you to pop in for a drink or something to eat and a number of small boutiques and souvenir shops.

TOWN HALL Located in the Old Town in front of the L’Aiguera Park, which leads up to the bull ring, the stunning modern steel and glass structure became the Town Hall in 2003. The building is 100 metres long, 15 metres wide and twelve storeys high, accommodating all the Council offices. The massive Square underneath the Town Hall is often the focal point of celebrations and fiestas – at Christmas time they even erect an ice rink there.

If you want a gastronomic experience head to Calle Domingo in the Old Town – it’s like eating a work of art.

A beautiful Spanish village up in the mountains

A spectacular show incorporating a troupe of dancers and some amazing costumes on a par with the Moulin Rouge.

APPROXIMATELY 10 km north of Benidorm, you will find a piece of real Spain - the town of Altea.

WITH ITS famous Blue Domed church, hand laid pebbled streets and whitewashed “picture postcard” houses, Altea couldn´t be further apart from Benidorm and to visit it, is like stepping back in time.

Altea is home to many artists who open up their homes to visitors as studios and galleries and it has the reputation of being one of the most photographed towns in Spain. To walk through its Moorish streets literally is like stepping back in time and the pace-oflife is noticeably more laid back than it´s “Manhattan skyline” neighbour, which is clearly visible from the “mirador” just off the town’s main square.

Altea has endless stretches of pebbled beaches, lined with pleasant walkways, bars, restaurants, clothes and craft shops that lead from the fishing port right to the other side of the town, which is where you will find one of the regions largest street markets and is held each Tuesday.

HOW TO GET THERE? If you are travelling by car, Altea is just a 15-minute drive from Benidorm on the main N332 heading towards Valencia and when there you will find lots of places to park. Probably the most convenient way to see Altea is by catching the number 10 bus that runs all day, every 15 minutes, from 07:00 to 23:30 and will cost just 1,50€ per person, per way.

Tabarca Island

THE ISLAND of Tabarca, sometimes called “Flat Island” is located just 3 miles off the cape of Santa Pola and takes about an hour to get there by boat. The island is the largest inhabited island in the Valencian Community and dates back to the 18th century. The island is 1750 metres long with a maximum width of 300 metres and is absolutely flat - hence its name and is a protected marine reserve. It is this that draws scuba divers and snorkellers here as they can swim amongst the vast marine life that surrounds the island. For the slightly less adventurous you can hire pedalo boats. There is only one village - “Nova Tarbaca” which is home to aprox. 100 people. The main industry is fishing related but come the summer months the tourist industry thrives as its a very popular day trip.

You can catch a boat from the marina at Mal Pas, located in the Old Town which departs at 10.30am every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. You get to spend the day on the island before making the return journey at 17.30pm. Make sure you give yourself around 3-4 hours for a leisurely stroll around the island and pit stops for refreshments... there are 16 restuarants

Off the beaten track BENIDORM IS without a doubt the jewel of the Costa Blanca, but there are other hidden treasures not so far from the resort which are certainly worth visiting whilst here.

ALBIR IS a great place to visit and easy to get to by hopping on the No 10 bus. If you enjoy walking the scenic lighthouse walk, within the Serra Helada natural park affords some simply stunning views.

Alfaz del Pi has a working winery, “Enrique Mendoza” and is in close proximity to Benidorm – a family run bodega which offers tours of the entire plant followed by a wine tasting session.

Altea is one of the most picturesque towns in the region and the distinctive blue doomed church in the Old Town is one of the most photographed churches in Spain. The white washed houses, cobbled streets and laid back Bohemian lifestyle will captivate you. There is a working fishing port next to the marina where you can watch the boats coming in each evening with their catch.

La Nucia was crowned European City of Sport for 2013 thanks to its fantastic sports centre - which is open to all for a nominal charge. The town also has an impressive auditorium which in the past has hosted the Covent Garden Royal Ballet and David Knopfler of Dire Straits.

Old Town

THE OLD Town is located between the Levante and Poniente beaches, a far cry from the ‘British Square’ in the Rincon, that people associate with Benidorm.

THIS AREA is like stepping back in time – full of narrow, cobbled streets adorned with white washed houses and an abundance of boutiques, bars and restaurants.

Head toward the blue-domed church and at the top you will arrive at the lookout point, or Mirador as the locals would say. The climb up to the top is certainly worth it for the wonderful view of both bays. On your way back down, stop off at the famous Tapas Alley – which as the name suggests is a street full of tapas bars. If you are fed up with pie and chips and fancy a real taste of Spain, this is where you should go.

The Old Town is also where you will find the Gay quarter – hugely popular for an alternative night out. A visit to the Rich Bitch Showbar and Kaffe Klee are a must if you appreciate drag humour and the many gay bars make everyone feel welcome and comfortable.

Mal Pas beach is located in the Old Town and it is from this harbour that you can catch a boat to both Tabarca Island and Calpe, great days out.

Rincon de Loix Poniente/La Cala STARTING AT Parc del Elche in the Old Town, generally referred to as Dove Park due to the hundreds of white doves, is Poniente beach, which runs for more than 3km and finishes at La Cala. The promenade, which runs along the entire length of the beach, won an architectural award for its innovative multi-coloured wave design and is certainly worth seeing. This side of Benidorm is much quieter, so great if you just want to relax and unwind.

At the far end of Poniente you will find La Cala – which technically belongs to the town of Finestrat but everyone refers to it as Benidorm.

The skyline is dominated by two buildings – the Gran Hotel Bali and the newly constructed ‘Intempo’ twin towers, with its gold clad frontage, rumoured to be the tallest residential building in Europe.

Away from the beach you will find the La Marina indoor shopping centre – a great way to while away a few hours to enjoy some retail therapy whilst on the top floor there is a 10-pin bowling alley to keep the men and kids amused.

If you fancy a bit of a thrill head to Karting Finestrat – located behind the shopping centre on the mountain side with beautiful views over Benidorm.

THE AREA often referred to as The Rincon is part of what is deemed the ‘New Town’, probably the most popular location with British holidaymakers. It is certainly the life and soul of the resort and where you will find all the nightlife.

The vast, sandy beach is lined with bars and restaurants which are lively to say the least. You will definitely find all your home comforts here such as all day British breakfasts, UK television in most bars and fantastic value food and drink.

During the day you are spoilt for choice of activities. Here you will find Aqualandia, the biggest waterpark in Spain and Mundomar, a marine animal park, both at the far end and next door to each other. For the adventurous there is the cable water ski which is found at the beginning of the Levante beach – great for adrenalin junkies.

Terra Mitica theme park is a great day trip with its exciting rides and shows, suitable for the entire family and not far away you will find Wildlife Park Terra Natura and beside it Aqua Natura, a smaller waterpark more suited for younger children. For golfers, the magnificent Villaitana golf course offers two 18-hole courses with a view of the Benidorm skyline.

Every Saturday night and held all year round is The Circus. Starting at 6pm and located behind Benidorm Palace, you will be captivated for over two hours (children are not compulsory to attend!)

And for a first class night out you cannot beat Benidorm Palace – probably the most visited attraction in Benidorm and you are guaranteed a night to remember with its magnificent show.

The Rincon is where you will find all the cabaret bars and nightclubs, open well into the early hours.

With the bars brimming over every night you will be spoilt for choice as to where to head. Most of the bars offer free entertainment and you can hear and watch a huge variety of very talented people ranging from singers, tribute groups and comedians catering to all tastes. And last but not least, the legend - Sticky Vicky!

Almadrava beach and Tio Ximo beach

IF YOU are a beach person but fancy something completely different and are a little bit adventurous, then why not try one of the semi hiden coves dotted around the coastline. These hideaways are understated and basic but the best thing is that you won´t find hoardes of tourists there. These 2 rocky coves remain almost hidden from view and like all the best quiet beaches, it takes a little effort to get there. Pack a picnic and wear some sensible shoes to get there – there´s nothing there, no loos, no café, or shade, apart from the parasols which you can hire during the peak summer season. However, the bonus is that you will have an idyllic peaceful few hours to relax and chill! Please note, neither of them are suitable for bikes or mobility scooters.

ALMADRAVA BEACH Secluded cove at the foot of the Sieraa Helada at the Rincon de Loix end of town. The easiest way to get there is pass the Gemelos 28 “Twin Towers” and just on the sharp bend in the road there is a path that goes down to the cove. However, if you are not 100% fit or are scared of heights then don´t try this route as most of the way entails walking on a rather thin ledge! Alternatively, the number 24 Palm Beach bus takes you to the carpark where you can walk down to the cove – but be warned, it is rough terrain. Although a path has been flattened out, it is an unadopted and steep way down.

TIO XIMO BEACH Rocky secluded cove just past Almadrava which offers cristal clear waters and plenty of rocks to dive off. This one is far easier to get to with a good road all the way down, however there is very limited parking at the bottom. A negative point to bear in mind if driving is that there is nowhere to do a 3 point turn, so you would need to reverse all the way back up, going around bends – alternatively take the number 24 bus then a shortish walk down.

Sunbeds are available for rental during the peak months and next summer there are plans for there to be a chiringito – a beach hut selling refreshments.

Benidorm Indoor Market now better than ever!

EAT CHEAP, get a new hairdo, stock up on British goodies, buy some Euros or just soak up the atmosphere!

THE INDOOR Market in Benidorm suffered a great deal when the financial dip hit us way back in 2009. However, it is all good these days at the famous market in the centre of the Rincon de Loix in Benidorm! Having ridden the storm pretty well the retail outlets are once again almost full with only a handful of empty units remaining.

You really notice the difference in the market of today compared to only a few years ago. With few empty units (just 6) the variety for shoppers is now greater than ever. If you have not popped over to the market for a browse on recent visits, you are certainly in for a surprise.

There are more cafĂŠs today with more seating areas where you can rest for a while and enjoy a cheap brunch or very late breakfast from just a couple of Euros. As has been the case for many years, the Indoor Market is a mix of local Spanish stall holders and a large number of British units offering all manner of products from tasty homemade Sausage Rolls to

branded toiletries that we recognise! You could be forgiven for thinking that you are in a local market in Stockport rather than sunny Spain.

There are some long established stall holders who have been trading for many years. These include Sheila´s Money Exchange (no rip off fees) for good rates on your Euros and for those on a self-catering holiday there are two superb family Butchers who make fresh meatballs, fresh burgers and sell best quality meats.

Last Friday afternoon the people were certainly arriving in their hundreds, the market was busy with serious buyers and lots of folks browsing. The old Indoor Market is certainly back on top where it belongs and is a must visit place whilst in Benidorm. Whatever you are looking for or when you simply cannot find something in town chances are the Indoor Market will have it in stock! Say Hello Duckie!

OUR QUACKING reporter takes a flying visit to the Benidorm Cross.

THIS MONTH Duckie gave his tail feathers a good shake and flew up to the famous Cross high above our lovely town. After a photo opportunity or two he made his way back to Benidorm to discover the truth about the iconic Cross.

Everyone who visits Benidorm will likely already know of the famous cross on the hill overlooking the Playa Levante. One of those Benidorm myths with many a story told of how it got there, none of which are usually based on fact!

Duckie discovered that the first cross appeared on the hill in 1962 and was the culmination of a mission by local Catholic monks to prove that the village had not lost it´s “soul” from the terrible “frivolous” bikini wearing tourists, deemed to be committing a terrible sin by wearing such clothes, or lack or clothes!

Indeed, at the time despite having permission direct from Franco to allow the bikini on beaches, Benidorm was not as frivolous as it is today. Just two years earlier the Bishop of Orihuela threatened the then Mayor, Pedro Zaragoza that he would place signs on roads into the village stating that the Mayor and residents would likely go to hell for allowing the wearing of these “garments of sin”. Feathers were certainly ruffled by them!

Today, visitors will see a large metal Cross erected in 1975 from parts of railway tracks. The original cross made of wood erected in January 1962, carried on the shoulders of the entire village from the famous blue domed church of San Jaime located at the top of the old town. The day became known as the “day of forgiveness” for the villagers, whom, by their very participation had proved that they were indeed spiritual and religious, unlike the tourists flocking in every increasing numbers for the sins of fun, sun and other such fleshy pastimes.

The cross is a must visit place and is now popular as a spiritual icon and place of remembrance to scatter ashes or loved ones and those who loved Benidorm. It is a romantic place, or simply a superb place to see Benidorm from high above the highest buildings with a nice bottle of Rioja perhaps. Duckie of course can fly up to the Cross you will have to walk or take a one way taxi then sit a while, enjoy the views, take some photos and enjoy the really easy downhill walk back. A great place and a great walk back downhill all the way back to the Rincon de Loix and the Levante beach and all that frivolous fun that Benidorm offers you 24/7. Alfaz has a great fruit and veg section at the far end and conveniently, the trusty number 10 will drop you off right at the start of the market. La Cala market is located not far from the Carrefour hypermarket in Finestrat and you can catch the number 2 bus from the centre of Benidorm to get there.

LA CALA & EL CISNE

La Cala market is next to the beach. El Cisne rastro is a flea market and has free live music to keep you entertained whilst you enjoy a drink and snack at the bar.

A night in neon city!

FROM DUSK until dawn, Benidorm does it better and cheaper than any other resort.

by Dave Gaskell BENIDORM REALLY does take on a totally different persona as the sun goes down beyond the Poniente. The zone everyone calls “The Square” in the Rincon de Loix slips up several gears as day turns to night and a thousand neon lights wink at you, tempting you into over 150 central pubs, clubs and cabaret venues.

THE SQUARE IS A TRIANGLE

The “Square” refers to the area where the infamous “Café Benidorm” is located and is the hub of the entertainment zone. In reality it is actually a triangle from Morgan´s Tavern at one end to the Marina Hotel at the other. The triangle is crisscrossed with enough venues to keep even the most demanding punters happy. You will be kept howling with laughter, toe tapping, line dancing or enjoying a tipple or three after a late night feast at the dozens of (mainly British) café bars squeezed tightly between the giant cabaret venues.

GO GAGA, MEATLOAF, MEET ROD STEWART

Every night let the big names entertain you from some cracking tribute acts. Mother Monster, LADY GAGA pops up most nights at Rocker Fellas as do WESTLIFE and down the road at Stardust TAKE THAT will have you going wild in the wee small hours. For those who are getting on in their years and prefer the gentleman of rock go see MEATLOAF at Jokers and ROD STEWART who seems to skip across town at various venues from early until late.

These artists are great, like the perfume sold all over Benidorm you know they are fake but like the perfume you simply have to have some. And amazingly unlike the fake perfume they look and sound just like the real thing.

FUNNY MEN AND FUNNY WOMEN

Benidorm is not short on funny men and not short on comedy venues including the UK Comedy & Cabaret Club where funny woman Crissy Rock is currently performing exclusively. Other not to be missed local comedy heroes are the incredible Albi Senior “The British Bulldog of Comedy” for squeaky clean humour (NOT) from the big man and an absolute must see, the very funny Rikki Stevens and even funnier sidekick Fred (The Monkey). If you only see one act in Benidorm, then Rikki Stevens is the one, Fred the Monkey is a real star, find them at THE TOWN, but grab a seat early!

It is doubtful that you will find a more diverse bunch of hard working and badly paid entertainers anywhere in the world and all this comes to you with no door charge, simply the price of a few drinks. If you miss an act early doors you will catch many of them late at another venue in town. Even in these tough times Benidorm still puts on a great show 365 days a year, it never stops. Yes, it is looking tired around the edges and some of Neon City lights are a tad faded, but it is all good, it is very friendly, very cheap and very British and it all starts again tomorrow night from dusk until dawn.

THEIR SHOW is like a Music Hall comedy, combining saucy cheek and charm but definitely suitable for all ages as no swearing or bad language whatsoever is used – only innuendoes, like a prewatershed act and exclusive to Talk of the Coast.

Simon Young plays the character of Dame Lucy and he invented the double act back in the late 70´s. Duncan Eyre plays the character of Reg, the long suffering husband and they have been performing together for 12 years now. Simon has had a most interesting career in the entertainment industry, having started at the tender age of 16 with the National Youth Theatre then continuing for a further 7 years in the theatre. He then digressed a little and for 2 years performed a wrestling show – with live lions at Flamingo Land, a theme park, zoo and holiday resort in Yorkshire,

which is where Simon is originally from. Lions are his passion and remarkably he has reared 18 lions, one from only 2 weeks old. More recently he worked on the island of Rhodes for 5 years, performing a unique comedy illusion show – something which he may resurrect again at some time. Simon has toured around the UK with his Dame Lucy Bun double act, to great praise and applause and in years gone by was also in Benidorm with the show. Due to continued requests he is back for a limited period and loving being here. Dame Lucy Bun and Reg is a quirky and memorable act with mannerisms comparable to the legendary Max Miller, the Cheeky Chappie music hall comedian. You will certainly leave the show with a big smile and an aching belly from all the laughter… and the poor downtrodden husband gets the final laugh – it´s like true life really!

Party at the Pig and Whistle!

NOT TO be missed is the Pig and Whistle, a traditional English pub in a corner of traditional Spain in Benidorm’s Old Town.

Restaurant Review...

El Italiano Restaurant

CENTRALLY LOCATED, the distinctive wood fronted El Italiano can be found at the top of the Avd Mediterraneo opposite Plaza Triangular.

On warm days the glass curtain wall at the front is pushed open giving you the feeling of eating al fresco and you can people watch those passing on their way into the Old Town. The waiters all speak English and the menu is also available in both Spanish and English.

They offer a fantastic 3 course Menu del Dia for only 12.95€ during the day which also includes a drink – an ideal option for lunch. There is a varied choice of 5 starters and 5 mains as follows: 1st Dish to choose from Garlic Bread Soup of the Day Mixed Salad Small Fried Fishes Pasta of the Day

Grilled Swordfish Grilled Sirloin Steak Shoulder of Lamb

2nd dish to choose from (All served with chips & Vegetables) Chicken Milanese Ossobuco a la Milanese

You can then opt for either dessert or coffee to finish off your meal.

In the evening they have an extensive a la carte menu, with a vast selection of pasta and stone baked pizzas

– obviously for an Italian restaurant, as well as a substantial fish, seafood and meat choice. They also offer a parrillada – like a table top hotplate / bbq for 2 with either a mixed fish or meat selection… great for sharing.

There is a great ambience with background music playing and helpful though not over pushy staff to serve.

Coffee lovers guide...

HOLIDAYMAKERS OR even those fortunate enough to live in beautiful Benidorm may be baffled as to the vast choice and selections of coffee available at bars and cafes.

The Spanish drink a lot of coffee but not much tea - this is especially evident if you ever go into an electrical store to purchase an electric kettle. There will be row upon row of coffee machines but probably a choice of two kettles. Still, as the saying goes, when in Rome...

Here are the most common choices of coffee: Cafe Solo - Equivalent to an Espresso: a small, very strong black coffee Cafe con Leche - Half cafe solo and half hot milk Cafe Bombon - A small glass containing condensed milk with cafe solo: very sweet!

Cafe Americano - Large black coffee Cafe Cortado - Cafe solo with a drop of milk Cafe con Hielo - Pronounced ‘yello’ and mostly drunk in the Summer time, this is cold, iced coffee. You will be served a normal coffee and be bought a separate glass with ice - then you pour the coffee over it Cafe Sombra - (or Cafe Manchado) is mostly milk with a few drops of coffee Cafe Carajillo - A cafe solo served with a shot of brandy... obviously a very popular choice! You will witness most builders having one for breakfast and the price is far cheaper than a Starbucks frothy milk concoction in the UK! If you want de-caffeinated then ask for ‘descafeinado’ - most places will have it.

So off you go and enjoy with a slice of cake!

The Duchess IN MY last review I was going to do healthy options but a friend of mine, Michael Fitzpatrick came over from bonnie Scotland for his birthday. So, I decided to treat him at the very pleasant restaurant Duomo.

SITUATED IN Calle Alicante in the heart of the Old Town Benidorm, open every day except Tuesdays, this restaurant has always been special to me and the late Duke, as the atmosphere is somewhat calming but on the flip side has a great Spanish buzz about it. The menu hasn’t changed in the past 17 years; maybe that’s why they get it so right! There’s a choice of around 12 starters, from home-made pâte to gazpacho soup and main courses from pasta, pizza, various steaks and sometimes even ostrich.

I did take the healthy option of their house salad, a wonderful array of 8 or 9 choices; it’s also the most colourful salad I have ever seen on my world wide travels. It comes accompanied with a honey mustard dressing (a little tip, only order the half portion as it is nearly a meal in itself). Patrick had the home-made gazpacho which is made from an Andalusian recipe, accompanied by the usual trimmings such as croutons, diced cucumber, peppers and diced onion.

For the main course I went for the duck breast (magret de pato).

Here they tend to serve it quite rare, so make sure you ask it to be cooked to your liking (they usually ask). It was very well presented, fanned across the plate served with a wild fruit sauce and diced potatoes (no vegetables here folks). Patrick decided on one of the house specialties which is a pasta dish containing prawns garlic and olive oil. For the dessert we shared a homemade cheese cake.

available during the weekends.

It’s a must!! One portion for two is quite enough. I nearly always choose the house wine and on this occasion we had the rosé.

There is a terrace at Duomo which is very pleasant but doesn’t have the best of views, i.e. the ladies washing just across the road. I much prefer a table downstairs where it’s nicely air-conditioned. As always

make a reservation. If you eat early don’t be surprised to see the restaurant empty, by the time you leave it will be full. It starts to get very busy around 10pm.

Overall a great night, good food and service. A meal for two won’t break the bank. Around 38.00€, including wine and it’s something a little different, so give it a try and you’ll see what I mean.
