Benidorm’s World Cup BENIDORM IS the perfect place for football fans to enjoy the action of the 20th FIFA World Cup when host nation Brazil kicks off the competition against Croatia on Thursday 12th June.

The Foreign Tourist Assistance Office

by Irena Bodnarec SATE, THE Foreign Tourist Assistance Office is a police department whose role is to offer assistance to foreign tourists should they become a victim of crime while in the resort. They will be able to offer help with the following: - Assistance in reporting a crime - Making a denuncia - Cancelling Credit Cards and other documents - Contacting the Consulate - Contacting family members - Assistance locating lost property - Psychological help if required SATE is on the first floor of the Tourist Information Office, in a building called ´El Torrejó´, located right at the end of the Levante beach and on the edge of the Old Town. As you enter the building, directly to your right are stairs that will take you up to the first floor - there is a lift available for those with mobility problems. The reason it is on the first floor as opposed to the ground floor is to give more privacy - the ground floor is all open plan and where the tourist information point is, with numerous people going in and out.

So what is the procedure if you are in that unfortunate position? Do you report it or not?

It will often depend on the type of crime com-

mitted and what has been taken. Fortunately, the vast majorities of crimes are NOT violent but involve pickpockets or being scammed.

The language barrier often puts many off reporting a crime plus the time and inconvenience involved. This is the main reason for opening the SATE office - it is run by the National Police who have interpreters available for non-Spanish speaking people. They are open from 9am till 9pm Monday to Friday and 10am till 2pm at the weekend in addition

to a 24 hour telephone service - the number is 902 102 112.

The main advantage of going in person to the SATE office is that you have the use of a telephone, which you can use free of charge to call family or your insurance company back in the UK - and also have access to a computer and internet. They are trying to make it as comfortable as possible for someone in distress – but hopefully you will not need their services when here.

AIRLINE NUMBERS

ALSA BUSES

This is the bus which runs to Alicante airport.

You can catch it from either the Avda Europa, outside the Europa Clinica or from the bus station. Departs hourly and on the hour from Avda Europa from 7am until 10pm – but there is NO bus at 9pm: costs 9.45€ one way.

BANKS

In Spain banks only open for half a day, so make sure you go in the morning. Normal opening hours are 8.15am till 2pm, no Saturday opening. All banks have an ATM with an option to change the language into English – press the ‘cambio idiomas’ option.

BRITISH CONSULATE This is located in Alicante – Edf Espacio, Rambla Mendez Nuñez, 6th Floor, Alicante 03002. Open Monday to Friday from 8.30am until 1.30pm. In an emergency contact 965 216 002: if you have lost or had your passport stolen you will need to go there to obtain an emergency travel document to get you back to the UK, which will take about two hours to process. It will only be valid for that one journey and costs approximately 120€.

BUSES

The local bus service is run by Llorente. You pay the driver and the cost is 1.50€ regardless of distance. Generally the buses run until midnight. The following buses, which all stop on the main Avd Mediterraneo, are probably the ones which you will find most useful - but with baggage you would need to take a taxi as you are not allowed to take luggage onto local public buses.

No 2 - Goes to Carrefour hypermarket and the La Marina Shopping centre No 10 - To Altea via Alfaz del Pi and Albir: a great way to see the local area

CHEMISTS

In Spain they are called a ‘Farmacia’. There is a 24hour farmacia on the main Avd Mediterraneo and the staff speaks English. Many local farmacias close over the lunch period from 1.30, re-opening at 5pm. If you need any sort of medication, including asprin or paracetamol, you can only buy them here: supermarkets are not allowed to sell any kind of medicine.

DOCTOR

If you have your EHIC – European Health Insurance Card you are entitled to see the social security doctor free of charge in an emergency, but you must also present your passport with the card. There are two ‘Centro de Salud’ (health centres) in Benidorm you can attend: Rincon de Loix - On Avd Derramador near to the Indoor market Foiettes in the Old Town - Calle Venuzuela La Cala - Avda de Benisa

There is only one social security hospital covering Benidorm – the Hospital Marina Baixa, which is actually located in Villa Joyosa, a short distance from the centre of Benidorm (just past La Cala).

However, there are two private hospitals in the centre of Benidorm – you will have to pay for any treatment or you can use your travel insurance if covered.

REPORTING A CRIME

SATE The Foreign Tourist Assistance Office.

If you are unfortunate enough to become a victim of crime this is ideally where you should go to report it.

Located on the first floor of the Tourist Information Office, at the very end of the Poniente Beach in the Old Town. Open Monday to Friday from 9am until 9pm and from 10am until 2pm over the weekend.

They have interpreters on hand and the use of a telephone to call relatives and your insurance company free of charge.

THE BRITISH press has reported that Benidorm is now the most popular location for Brits’ second homes in Spain as the UK Land Registry shows that villas and apartments bought by overseas buyers in the city has almost tripled in the past four years.

The city has changed its image beyond recognition in recent years from the beer-swilling sunshine paradise of the sixties, seventies and eighties to a cosmopolitan, stream-lined and sophisticated version of itself.

10 Days of Gastronomic Delights

by Irena Bodnarec FOR THE fifth year running, Benidorm is hosting “Gastronomy Days” to promote quality Spanish cuisine. Last year it was a week long event, but due to its popularity, this year it is on for 10 days. 19 different restaurants are participating in this event, which starts on Friday 6th June and lasts until Sunday 15th June.

Prices range between 28€ to 45€ which includes 3 amazing gourmet courses plus quality wines, some of which are sourced from the local Enrique Mendoza bodega in Alfaz del Pi - which is on the outskirts of Benidorm.

It is certainly something to consider if you would like to try some elaborate and skillfully prepared food that is artfully pre-

sented - sometimes it´s a shame to actually eat the dish as it looks so beautiful! Only top quality ingredients are used – locally sourced where possible, combining traditional with avant-garde to create some spectacular flavor combinations.

Base Jumping THE SEVENTH annual BASE Jump Extreme World Championships will take place at the Gran Hotel Bali in La Cala on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June.

by Irena Bodnarec BASE JUMPING is an extreme sport where participants jump from fixed objects – BASE is an acronym that stands for the four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump: Buildings, Antennas, Spans (bridges) and Earth (cliffs). BASE jumping grew out of skydiving but BASE jumps are made from much lower altitudes and the jump takes place close to the object serving as the jump platform. The main risk is that most BASE jumping venues have very small areas in which to land. To explain the danger a skydiver, after parachute deployment may have a 3 minute parachute ride to the ground. A BASE jump from 500 feet will have a parachute ride of only 10-15 seconds! Adrenaline junkies love the danger

involved - there’s no room for mistakes The Gran Hotel Bali, located at the La Cala end of Benidorm is 160 metres tall with spectacular views from the top. The contestants launch themselves off the top of the hotel and have a small target mat, which is next to the swimming pool at the back of the hotel.

Of the 20 jumpers last year, the only female, Maria Steinmayr of Austria crashed into the side of the hotel sustaining several injuries.

Jumping will take place on both days between 10am and 1pm then again between 6pm and 8pm winds permitting – but times subject to change depending on weather conditions. It is free to watch this thrilling event – make your way through the main entrance and straight through towards the rear, where the pool is located.

Neptuno Aquatic Music Festival THE NEPTUNO Aquatic festival takes place on Saturday 12th July at Aqua Natura in Benidorm – a legendary all night party starting at midnight until 8am! Two stages will be set up to create separate and very distinct styles – EDM and Tecno. A number of top artistes have already been confirmed for the line up, including Cristian Varela and Derek Muller, both popular DJ´s on the Ibiza party circuit for the Tecno Zone and Zombie Kids and Space Elephants for the EDM Zone. Tickets are now available to purchase either online or through various outlets, together with combined transport options – no under 16´s permitted.

San Juan means Party Time!

THE NIGHT of San Juan is a very old festival in Spain and will take place on Monday 23rd June - the ritual dictates that it is a special night to ward off evil spirits and clean out everything bad in your life.

by Irena Bodnarec IT IS a very ancient festival, originally with deep religious meaning but has become diluted and is basically a night of partying and fun with friends and family.

The beaches, especially Benidorm, La Cala and Albir will be crowded with both locals and tourists out to celebrate the start of the Midsummer solstice. Many people gather in groups with family and friends, starting to descend from about 7pm onwards. They bring tables, chairs, food and plenty of drinks in cool boxes and basically party.

Although the beaches are usually policed at night, on the night of San Juan they are expected to turn a blind eye!

It is an amazing atmosphere and at midnight those brave enough go into the sea, some with 3 coins and a white flower which they throw in for good luck - then light a candle for their dreams to come true. For those not that brave a splash

and paddle will do! Many will light small bonfires -”hogueras” – although technically forbidden on the beaches, in previous years Albir Council have had a big one specially built and controlled by the police and fire brigade . In some places the tradition is to write down on a piece of paper all the bad thing you want to get rid of in your life and burn it in the bonfire at the stroke of midnight before going into the sea, whilst in others you have to jump 3 times over the hoguera and you will be cleansed and purified and your problems burned away. How wonderful if it could be this easy! But if you want to be doubly sure then do them all to cover every eventuality.

Parking will be extremely difficult around the beach area so be prepared to park some way further back and walking down - but you’ll have a great evening soaking up the atmosphere and being part of a real Spanish fiesta.

Mini cruise to Calpe IF YOU fancy doing something different why not take a day trip out of Benidorm – and go on a mini cruise!

by Irena Bodnarec And if you’re a lover of seafood then Calpe is a real must. No need to drive and worry about drink driving or parking, which in the busy summer months is a nightmare - let the water take the strain! The boat departs at 11.30am from Benidorm port, located just before Mal Pas beach in the Old Town every day except Saturday. The pleasant and scenic journey takes 1 hour to reach Calpe – but make sure you get there about 10 minutes or so beforehand. It costs 22.50€ for adults and 15€ for children, leaving Calpe at 4pm and arriving back in Benidorm at 5pm, so giving you ample time for your fish lunch or to stroll around. The boat travels along the coastline, taking in the wonderful views of the Sierra Helada mountain range, Albir, Altea then docking in the Penon de Ifach in Calpe - right under the huge “rock of Calpe”. It is a site which you rarely get to see, as you are normally looking out to sea rather than the reverse. As you disembark

from the boat the fish restaurants are directly in front of you one after the other.

Don’t worry if you don’t speak any Spanish the waiters all do- but the displays in the refrigerators have prices on so you can just point to whatever takes your fancy! You will also be entertained throughout your meal by the “looky looky men” trying to sell you anything from a fake gucci handbag, designer sunglasses and watches, table-clothes and even fishing rods!

Cable Ski

IF YOU fancy an adventure on the waters, than there is no better activity to try than the Cable Ski – located at the Rincon de Loix end of Levante beach. The 1,000 square metre circuit will exhilarate you and the thrill of riding the waves will leave you wanting more – this is no ordinary water skiing experience! The only requirements are that you can swim – and you have to be over 7 years of age. For first timers it is recommended that you try on 2 skis, you can then progress onto the mono-ski and finally a wakeboard – the equivalent of snowboarding on water. An overhead cable system, linked by four towers will pull you along and up to 12 skiers can ride at any one time. Lifejackets are provided for all participants. It is open daily from 11am until 7pm throughout June and between 10.30am and 7.30pm in July and August.

Chiringuito Beach Huts

by Irena Bodnarec THE CHIRINGUITO, an almost essential part of Spanish culture, is basically a wooden shack on the beach selling cold drinks, beers and snacks. They are normally located on the more remote beaches and coves, where there aren´t many bars or restaurants and despite the rather rustic and basic facilities, are loved by both locals and tourists.

Once sitting outside, the only sounds you will hear are the waves lapping the shore and the chink of ice cubes in your glass!

They are only open for the Summer months – generally from the beginning of June until the end of September and are certainly a welcome relief in the hot midday sun.

Villa Joyosa has a total of 6 chiringuito huts dotted along its coastline, two of which – El Torres and Varadero, are just on the outskirts of Benidorm.

To find them travel along the N332 as if heading to the Marina Baixa Hospital.

Pass the hospital turning and at the first roundabout shortly after take a left, following the sign for ´El Torres´. Head straight down till you can´t drive any further, park up and you will see the dark wood chiringuito in front of you, right on the beach.

The second chiringuito is on Playa Varadero – painted white and looking like an American New England style beach cottage. Stay on the N332, passing Ex-Pats wholesaler and at the traffic lights turn left. The quickest and easiest route is to head towards the port where there is plenty of free parking then walk along the front in the Benidorm direction and you will find the chiringuito about 100 metres ahead. It is located in a lovely cove and they will be broadcasting all the world cup matches from a big screen – what better way to watch the footie than on the beach with the sound of waves in the background!

There are more chiringuito huts further up towards Villa Joyosa – it’s a great way to see the coastline, making your way from one to another.

WITH 5 separate theme parks, it´s easy to understand why Benidorm is a great destination for family holidays. Now that they are all open daily for the season, here is a summary of what each has to offer.

SOME COMBINED ticket packages are available for the theme parks allowing you to save money on multiple entrance prices – or alternatively look out for discount vouchers, which are widely available throughout the resort.

AQUALANDIA The largest waterpark in Europe and a favourite throughout the hot months with everyone, regardless of age. The coloured water slides are quite an iconic sight on the Benidorm skyline and Aqualandia has the worlds highest capsule slide – Verti-Go, measuring 33 metres. Open from 10am, you can purchase all days tickets or half day – valid after 3pm. The number 1 and 11 buses go right to the front entrance or if going by car, parking is free.

MUNDOMAR Marine animal park directly next door to Aqualandia which also has many exotic animals. A particular favourite with children, offering plenty of shows throughout the day, including parrot, sea lion and dolphin spectaculars.

There is also an opportunity to book a unique ´swimming with the sea lions´ or ´encounter with dolphins´ experience – however both need to be pre-booked.

TERRA MITICA Theme park divided into 5 zones – Egypt, Rome, Greece, Iberia and the Islands with stunning architecture and a multitude of rides in each, including a 360-degree rollercoaster for the adventurous thrill seekers. Beautifully

landscaped grounds with plenty of shady areas and a new swimming section with Jacuzzi and plenty of water rides throughout the park – so don´t forget to bring your swimming costumes. Some good shows throughout the day but dialogue is in Spanish – however it is easy to follow. Be aware you are not allowed to take your own food and drink into the park.

TERRA NATURA Wildlife park divided into 3 zones – America, Asia and Europe where you get to see animals of those continents living within their natural environment. The park has over 1500 animals of 200 different species – 50 of which are classified as endangered and they run a very successful breeding program. There are plenty of interactive activities going on throughout the day, such as feeding the animals and for the brave you can fly across the elephant plain on the 400 metre ´Zipwire´!

AQUA NATURA Water park located next to Terra Natura. Smaller than Aqualandia but there is certainly no shortage of slides, plumes and activities to keep you amused which has the added bonus of a free Sea Lion show twice daily. There is a man made beach with sand and this park is probably better suited than the other water park for younger children.

The Hotel Located directly opposite the Benidorm Palace and only a five minute walk to Aqualandia and Mundomar the 4* Mediterraneo is in a great location for both adults and families to enjoy a break in Benidorm away from all the noise. Room offer soft pastel colours, simple unfussy furnishings, a full length mirror, fridge, flat screen TV and furnished balcony. Bathrooms have a shower and full size bath and yes they do have a hair dryer.

The Food Served in the buffet restaurant with a decent mix of Spanish and mainly international food. With a large number of guests staying all inclusive the food represents very good value if a little unimaginative. Similar too most hotels who offer all inclusive options trying to cater for the majority. Overall good food for a very touristy hotel where even the fussy eater should find something they like.

The Pool Terrace Located in the massive central courtyard the large pool plus paddling pool is a real suntrap with plenty of sun loungers to go round. A lively place to enjoy your day with a pool bar and inside bar to choose from. The big indoor pool is also easy to find located opposite the main pool.

What You Should Know The hotel will suit couples, small groups and families who enjoy all inclusive value holidays or half board. A popular choice with Thomson, Jet2, Thomas Cook and First Choice guests and as such standards are high to comply with their requirements. You should not therefore be disappointed, the return rate is very good here.

The location on the edge of town makes for a 15 walk to the beach but for evenings you are a hop from great show bars such as Levi´s Showboat.

PARC DE ELCHE

Better known to the Brits as ‘Dove Park’, it can be found at the beginning of Poniente Beach on the edge of the Old Town: a lovely, shady park area with plenty of palm trees. Here you can sit and ‘people watch’ with a massive population of white doves which you can feed – very popular with the Spanish.

PEACOCK ISLAND

The giant rock jutting out directly in front of the Levante beach is ap 4 km from the shore. You can catch a glass bottomed boat from the marina at Mal Pas which gives you some amazing views of the reef and fish then explore the wildlife and bird population on the island.

BALCON DEL MEDITERRANEO

Located up in the Old Town, right at the top and often referred to as the Mirador. A little bit of a steep climb but well worth it when you see the beautiful panoramic views of both the bays. You can also access it from Mal Pas beach where there is a staircase which leads all the way up. A very pretty blue and white tiled gazebo with seating makes a lovely backdrop for a photo and the square has a selection of bars so you can take in the stunning scenery.

Sand Sculptur

IF YOU thought building sand castle childs play then you haven’t been to Levante beach in Benidorm !

By Irena Bodnarec AS YOU take a stroll along the front, dotted along the length of the promenade you will be astonished to find the most beautifully designed sand sculptures. The details are amazing – the one of a castle, complete with moats, bridges and water fountains took two men 15 days to craft . It has to be sprayed with water at regular intervals otherwise the sand will dry out and the sculpture will collapse. Once finished they will remain for around 3/4 weeks before being demolished and another one built in its place. However, if a freak thunderstorm hits then its sooner, as has been the case in the past. The creators are on hand to repair any damage - often caused by wayward balls. There is someone guarding it 24 hours a day to stop it being vandalized - normally in 2 shifts, day & night we were told. The creators are more than happy for you to take photos of their creations and appreciate any donations - for which there is a bucket nearby.

TAPAS ALLEY

If you are fed up of pie & chips and fancy a taste of the real Spain then head to Calle Santo Domingo – better known to all as “Tapas Alley” in the Old Town. The tapas are displayed behind glass and you can walk up and down pointing to whatever takes your fancy - the prices vary depending on which ones you choose but are generally between 1.50€ and 2.50€.

VIEWPOINT AT GRAN HOTEL BALI

If you want to see Benidorm from a different perspective then pop to the Gran Hotel Bali in La Cala where you can go up to the panoramic view point on the 43rd floor - in a glass lift! Open from 11.00am until 13.30pm then again from 15.30pm until 21.30pm there is a 6 euros charge for non-residents, but you do get a drink at the viewpoint bar included – chlldren under 12 go free (1 per adult).

PONIENTE PROMENADE

The brand new Poniente Promenade is the envy of every seaside resort and runs from the Old Town down towards La Cala. The promenade took over two years to complete and cost near on 20 million euros - but much of that was funding from the EU. The innovative multi coloured wave design won an architectural award and definitely worth seeing.

Various boat departures for an adventurous day out. From here you can catch the hourly glass bottomed boat to Benidorm Island which departs from 10am until 5pm. Or try the mini cruise to Calp which takes you on a picturesque tour of the coast, passing by Albir, Altea and some small hidden coves – a daily service departing Benidorm at 11.30am and returning from Calpe at 4.30pm. For the more adventurous how about a boat trip to Tabarca Island, sometimes referred to as ‘Flat Island’.

known landmark in the town. It has been a permanent fixture there for the last three years and can accommodate 850 people. The tent is totally wheelchair friendly with the installation of ramps for easy access to the ringside, with heating and air conditioning to ensure a comfortable evening.

hit, particularly with young families. There are lots of shows throughout the day and you can even book to swim with the sea lions or get up close to the dolphins. However, both of these need to be pre-booked. It is really easy to get to there: if driving the best place to head for is Benidorm Palace - then take the road almost opposite and it will take you all the way there - about a 2 minute drive. Parking is free. Or catch a public bus - either the number 1 or 11 - to take you straight to the entrance - but if there are four of you it will probably work out the same to take a taxi, especially if you are coming from Benidorm.

THE AREA often referred to as The Rincon is part of what is deemed the ‘New Town’, probably the most popular location with British holidaymakers.

IT IS certainly the life and soul of the resort and where you will find all the nightlife.

The vast, sandy beach is lined with bars and restaurants which are lively to say the least. You will definitely find all your home comforts here such as all day British breakfasts, UK television in most bars and fantastic value food and drink.

During the day you are spoilt for choice of activities. Here you will find Aqualandia, the biggest waterpark in Spain and Mundomar, a marine animal park, both at the far end and next door to each other. For the adventurous there is the cable water ski which is found at the beginning of the Levante beach – great for adrenalin junkies.

One of the most breath taking views to be had of resort must be from the top of the Sierra Helada, often referred to as ‘The Hill’. Many holidaymakers trek up to the top, where you will find a Benidorm landmark: The Cross… just be aware

that it’s a good 45-minute trek to the top!

Terra Mitica theme park is a great day trip with its exciting rides and shows, suitable for the entire family and not far away you will find Wildlife Park Terra Natura and beside it Aqua Natura, a smaller waterpark more suited for younger children. For golfers, the magnificent Villaitana golf course offers two 18-hole courses with a view of the Benidorm skyline.

Every Saturday night and held all year round is The Circus. Starting at 6pm and located behind Benidorm Palace, you will be captivated for over two hours (children are not compulsory to attend!)

And for a first class night out you cannot beat Benidorm Palace – probably the most visited attraction in Benidorm and you are guaranteed a night to remember with its magnificent show. The Rincon is where you will find all the

cabaret bars and nightclubs, open well into the early hours. With the bars brimming over every night you will be spoilt for choice as to where to head. Most of the bars offer free entertainment and you can hear and watch a huge variety of very talented people ranging from singers, tribute groups and comedians catering to all tastes. And last but not least, the legend - Sticky Vicky!

The Old Town

THE OLD Town is located between the Levante and Poniente beaches, a far cry from the ‘British Square’ in the Rincon, that people associate with Benidorm.

This area is like stepping back in time – full of narrow, cobbled streets adorned with white washed houses and an abundance of boutiques, bars and restaurants.

Head toward the blue-domed church and at the top you will arrive at the lookout point, or Mirador as the locals would say. The climb up to the top is certainly worth it for the wonderful view of both bays. On your way back down, stop off at the famous Tapas Alley – which as the name suggests is a street full of tapas bars. If you are fed up with pie and chips and fancy a real taste of Spain, this is where you should go.

The Old Town is also where you will find the Gay quarter – hugely popular for an alternative night out. A visit to the Rich Bitch Showbar and Kaffe Klee are a must if you appreciate drag humour and the many gay bars make everyone feel welcome and comfortable.

Mal Pas beach is located in the Old Town and it is from this harbour that you can catch a boat to both Tabarca Island and Calpe, great days out.

STARTING AT Parc del Elche in the Old Town, generally referred to as Dove Park due to the hundreds of white doves, is Poniente beach, which runs for more than 3km and finishes at La Cala. The promenade, which runs along the entire length of the beach, won an architectural award for its innovative multi-coloured wave design and is certainly worth seeing. This side of Benidorm is much quieter, so great if you just want to relax and unwind.

At the far end of Poniente you will find La Cala – which technically belongs to the town of Finestrat but everyone refers to it as Benidorm.

The skyline is dominated by two buildings – the Gran Hotel Bali and the newly constructed ‘Intempo’ twin towers, with its gold clad frontage, rumoured to be the tallest residential building in Europe. Away from the beach you will find the La Marina indoor shopping centre – a great way to while away a few hours to enjoy some retail therapy whilst on the top floor there is a 10-pin bowling alley to keep the men and kids amused.

If you fancy a bit of a thrill head to Karting Finestrat – located behind the shopping centre on the mountain side with beautiful views over Benidorm.

What is Bicidorm?

BICIDORM IS a system of loaning bicycles to promote efficient and healthy city transportation, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly commuting network. This is an experimental plan launched by the City, designed to reduce the use of cars and promote the use of non-motorised transport.

bicycle rental in the city.

HOW DOES IT WORK? To qualify for a Bicidorm bike you need to be older than 14 years and healthy.

LA CALA Finestrat Saturday Market has it all and a great day out too……

IT HAS been over a year since our last visit to the Saturday morning market in the bay at La Cala Finestrat. Since then this relaxing and friendly shopping experience has gone from strength to strength.

What was once a tiny and rather dull little market selling the usual range of shoes, handbags and lots of grot has grown into a fine place to buy fresh local produce, cheese, bread, and of course hams and delicious sliced sausages of all types.

This happy market is such because it does not allow too many competing pitches. Here you will not find stall after stall all selling exactly the same thing, good for business and good for you the shopper.

This is a local market frequented by people who live locally and not just a touristy market. The Saturday market really deserves support, it is great.

You will find just enough variety here with a great mix of food, clothes and of course those obligatory look like the real thing handbags! You will not find row after row of “brown shoes only” stalls, instead you will find smart modern (mostly fake) branded shoes for men and sparkly big Cha Cha heels for ladies and even Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Got Bikinis too!

There are several of each type of stall, but each seems to sell very different stock. You will find really good handmade costume jewellery, a wonderful stall selling every type of olive you could imagine. There are beautifully colourful seasonal fruit and vegetable stalls, the smell of fresh baked bread plus local cheeses and cured meats. You can buy quality rugs, cheap knickers, beach beds, art and leather. For the peckish, enjoy a couple of makeshift cafés and a couple of popular ready to go spit roasted chicken vendors who will chop it, skin it and box it ready to eat.

It is a real pleasure to spend a few hours here. Easy to park or take the regular bus No.2 or No.3 from central Benidorm. After a trip to this authentic local market there is a great beach to enjoy a dip in the sea or a “Menu del dia” at several good restaurants in the bay.

The bus service to Villa Joyosa is rather limited but it is worth visiting this beautiful town. Alternatively, El Cisne is a very popular flea market if you like to rummage and the bus stops right outside.

Alfaz has a great fruit and veg section at the far end and conveniently, the trusty number 10 will drop you off right at the start of the market. La Cala market is located not far from the Carrefour hypermarket in Finestrat and you can catch the number 2 bus from the centre of Benidorm to get there.

La Cala market is next to the beach. El Cisne rastro is a flea market and has free live music to keep you entertained whilst you enjoy a drink and snack at the bar.

And also car boot type markets in La Nucia and Polop… you are really spoilt for choice on Sunday!

Algar waterfalls A MUST see beauty spot if you are here in Benidorm are the Algar waterfalls, only 15km away, which can be found on the outskirts of the village of Callosa d’En Sarria.

DON’T LET the fact that you have no car put you off, as the No 18 bus goes from the heart of Benidorm – at present it is only a weekend service but in previous years they have extended that to a daily service in the peak holiday season (July & August). A return journey costs 7.50€ and you pay the driver when you get on. The bus starts at La Cala Finestrat, departing at 9:50am, arrives in Benidorm Centre – opposite McDonalds at ap 10:25am and heads down the Avd Mediterraneo to arrive at the Rincon at 10:35am – all times are approximate dependent on traffic.

It takes around an hour to get there from the Rincon, taking you through the breathtaking countryside - the journey alone is worthwhile. The bus passes through the villages where you get a true feel of Spanish life, winding its way through the orange and nispero groves that line the hillside – its amazing how the driver manages to manoeuvre the bus through some of the narrow streets and tight bends!

The bus drops you off at the Fonts and collects you again at 5pm giving you an entire day out. Entrance into the waterfalls is 4€ for adults and 2€ for children aged between 4 and 10 years old. Seniors have a discounted rate of 3€ on production of ID. Throughout the month of June the waterfalls are open from 10am until 7pm then in July and August the times are extended, opening at 9am until 8pm.

Just before you get to the ticket booth (wooden shed) you have the obligatory photo taken by a young lady, who on your departure has it ready in a frame as well as on a

key-ring - no pressure to purchase though. You then have the very steep climb up wooden steps to get to the falls - a pair of flat shoes is advisable.

There is a restaurant where you can purchase either a full Menu del Dia or just tapas snacks - plus cold drinks and icecream. Most visitors take picnics - heaving their cool-boxes up the steps to the top (have a man in tow). Make sure you take towels and swimwear and it would be recommended to take some rubber soled swimming shoes, which are readily available at all the Chinese shops in Benidorm for a few euros.

There are plenty of shady areas to relax in but the most fun you’ll have is jumping into the freezing cold running water. For those old enough to remember it’ll take you back to the 50’s when there was no Health & Safety officer telling you that you couldn’t jump off a piece of shuttering ply 10 metres into the river! It is so un-commercialized and relaxing but full of people - of all nationalities. They have attendants and first aiders patrolling to make sure no-one does anything too dangerous, but it’s just great to watch everyone deriving such fun and excitement by jumping into a river. Further up you can dive off the waterfalls - but a word of caution, the freezing water will literally take your breath away. However, when the sun is baking in the middle of a hot July afternoon, it´s definitely a welcome relief.

You will go back tired but exhilarated from your day out ... and probably wanting to do it all again the following weekend.

Five wonderful days in Barcelona OF ALL the magnificent cities in Spain, Barcelona is arguably the most vibrant of all, transformed into the essence of a modern, sophisticated city since hosting the 1992 Olympics.

Even before the Olympics put Barcelona in the world’s headlines it boasted the works of the exceptionally talented Antonio Gaudi and a few other outstanding landmarks, including its 16th Century cathedral and parts of the 1st Century Roman city walls - and of course the Rambla, of which famous artist and writer Fredrico Gracia Lorca was prompted to say: “It is the only street in the world which I wish would never end.”

When you visit for yourself this action-packed centre of buskers, entertainers, flower vendors, music and colour, you will understand why Lorca was compelled to feel this way. Picasso, Juan Miro and Salvador Dali were all seduced by this exciting seaside city of more than 1,500,000 inhabitants.

Barcelona showcases some of Gaudi’s most fascinating constructions, such as ‘La Pedrera’ (the quarry), an amazing curved mansion built in the centre of the city without a single straight line in its construction and Park Guell, a fantasy ‘Disney-like’ creation. And the breathtakingly grandiose pinnacle achievement of his life, The Sagrada Familia, an enormous cathedral so intricately carved as to give the impression of being formed in some heavenly mould. Sadly Antonio Gaudi never saw his masterpiece completed: at the age of 74 he died of his injuries after being knocked down by a tram, leaving Barcelona his remarkable legacy of buildings.

Shop ‘til you drop OLD TOWN

The Old Town is a great place to start. Calle Gambo, the pedestrianised street that begins at the Plaza Triangular, where the huge rubber tree is, has a great selection of popular boutiques such as Masimo Dutti – a must for fashion-savvy customers, and Zara, which is now everyone’s favourite High Street fashion hit: even the Duchess of Cambridge and Coleen Rooney want to be seen in this leading Spanish fashion brand. The prices tend to work out cheaper here in Spain even taking into account the exchange rate, so it is certainly worth a visit. One well-known English name here and one you will be familiar with is Specsavers - the UK’s most popular opticians, run by Phillip, a British ex-pat. Paseo de la Carretera is another must-do street and will take you all the way to Elche Park.

ASA ELLIOTT shot to everyones attention after his appearance as the resident singer at “Neptunes” on the hit ITV series Benidorm. He is named after the Manchester City player and subsequent caretaker manager Asa Hartford – and is a die hard City fan and supporter.

In 2004 Asa performed on the ITV talent show “Stars in their Eyes” as Bobby Vee after which he drove to Benidorm and performed at various cabaret bars for a number of years. This Autumn he will star on the UK tour of “The West End Experience” – a show of all the great West End musiclas, with smash hits songs from Les Mis, Phantom of the Opera and Grease to name a few, visiting around 25 different venues. He will also he headlining in panto at Chesterfield this year, along with Camilla Dallerup –ex Strictly Come Dancing star.

ing Prince Charming! He certainly has a full 6 months ahead of him – lets hope that he finds some time to pop back to say hello to us all in Benidorm.

A Tribute to

The Drifters

CHARMING AND suave singing trio Anoff, Kojo and Mark are a must see if you love soul music – a genre which combines Rhythm & Blues with Gospel music. The threesome perform as a ´Tribute to The Drifters´ every night here in Benidorm, to much cheer and applause.

With their good looks and hot moves they are a delight to watch – as is testament by the packed audiences who come to see them every night!

Originally from Wandsworth in South London, brothers Anoff and Kojo have been friends with Mark since childhood, living close by with their respective families as they grew up. They originally came to Benidorm back in 2006 to work one Summer season in Town – but that 3 months has turned into 8 years and they have no intention of going back anytime soon.

They have all been performing in one way or another, two since a very young age – Kojo sang in the world renowned London Community Gospel Choir and remembers the highlight of singing with Mariah Carey at Hyde Park. Mark – one of a triplet, was initially a jazz dancer then became part of a group called Extraordinaires – touring around Las Vegas, singing, dancing and vocal harmonies. He has performed with legendary pianist Jools Holland to name one of many and has made numerous television adverts. Anoff started his singing career here in Benidorm initially as part of ´Motown Brothers´ before forming A Tribute to The Drifters. In the UK he did a few TV spots alongside being a DJ and producer so music and rhythm is in his blood. All three have a love and appreciation of 1950´s music and love vocal harmonies, which is reflected in their shows.

The trio currently perform together nightly at Café B on Monday, Tuesday and Friday then at Rockerfellas on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday – 10pm start in both venues, at New Life every Wednesday at 11pm then a late night performance every night at Talk of the Town starting at 12.15am. They also guest star in several hotels – currently Rio Park and Flamingo Oasis as well as performing individually and are currently working on a fabulous new show that will be undoubtedly be very popular – JLS, which they hope to have ready for the Summer season.

One Vision

OF THE many performers within the Benidorm entertainment circuit “One Vision” is a group which stands out.

THEY ARE a four piece made up of Emma Louise Dickenson, David Wenzel, Darren Coulton and Mark Harty and their popularity is based upon them having a wide appeal across the age spectrum – Mark is the one with the Mohican, which changes colour on a regular basis!

They are not a Queen tribute band but were formed based on the West End hit musical “We will Rock You” and all songs which they perform are featured in the show. The group have been going for 5 years and they regularly swap and add new songs to their show to maintain interest – you can catch them every night at 11pm in Morgans Tavern where they put on a full production rock show with some amazing outfits and lighting.

The atmosphere is electric and they quickly get the audience involved, clapping and raising their arms in time to the classic rock tune, We will Rock You. They are all professional singers and entertainers who have worked the Summer season at some of the top tourist destinations and cruise liners around the world. The group were also the support act when the 60´s pop band “The Searchers” performed at Benidorm Palace.

The four have a close and harmonious relationship which is reflected in their polished performance each night and should most definitely not be missed.

Tapa of the month

Almadrava: Tuna Tartar INGREDIENTS Bluefin Tuna, Chives, Peeled Tomato, Pickled Gherkin, Soy Sauce, Trout Roe PREPARATION Bluefin tuna should be in very small cubes.

Chop Chives, Peeled Tomato and Pickles: Mix together and add soy sauce.

INGREDIENTS FOR GUACAMOLE Avocado, Green onions, Tomato, Lemon, Salt, Pepper PREPARATION Mash the ingredients into a cream. Add fresh lemon juice and season with salt and pepper.

PLATING Using circular moulds first present the Guacamole and then the prepared Tuna Tartar on two levels. Top with the Trout Roe. Serve with thinly sliced, lightly fried bread and garnish with Chives.

ACCOMPANIMENT Freixenet: Vintage Brut Reserve: A high quality cava prized by savvy consumers of champagne for its optimum aging and its successful balance between acidity and body.

Straw-yellow with greenish hues… its bubbles are fine with good release, forming a slight crown. The nose is fresh with fruity notes and a hint of aniseed. The palate entry is soft and fresh with a bubble that fits nicely in the mouth, with retronasal memories of nuttiness: A dry aftertaste and strong character.

Long established British bar, O’Maras, in the Old Town of Benidorm, has just undergone a major refurbishment and is now open.

Dave, Jan and Ian are pleased to welcome customers old and new to their bar, which offers a menu of typical British pub fare as well as a good English breakfast. In fact it is often said that “they don’t serve fast food, they just do good food as fast as they can”.

Apart from the large regular menu, O’Maras serves up a daily “specials” board, and is also well known for their excellent Sunday lunches, and a word to the wise, booking in advance to avoid disappointment will ensure you a seat.

Behind the bar there is a large selection of imported beer and spirits as well as local stock. To add to the friendly atmosphere, all your favourite music plays from the 50’s to present day, and all the major sports events are shown on 3 big screen televisions. The Two Palms has just got bigger and better!

REGULARS AND residents of Benidorm already know how good the food and service is at the long established Two Palms restaurant in Calle La Palma, Old Town Benidorm.

FOR MANY years now John and his team have been serving up tasty, delicious meals at his restaurant. Last month John took the move to expand the restaurant by taking over the locale opposite, giving him an extra twenty odd seats. The original Two Palms, renovated recently, is now more spacious and comfortable, and John has carried over the style and feel to his new premises. His popular menus are still all available so you can now enjoy all your favourites in more comfort in either of the seating areas. Whether you are a Liver and Onions person or an A La Carte Steak meal person there is something to please all pallettes. With new Pastry Chef Sharon dishing out the goodies from the new kitchen area things couldn’t get any better!

They even had an official opening ceremony,

with HRH The Duchess performing the honour – in full regalia and turning heads as one would expect!

The interior is both chic and stylish, oozing class and a perfect venue for Benidorm royalty. Chris and his team of staff laid on a wonderful selection of food and drink for all to sample and enjoy – to showcase the quality on offer and so guarantee their return.
