They return loyally each year as their satisfactory holiday experiences guarantee a friendly, safe destination featuring the best beaches; the best climate, top accommodation and first class entertainment for the whole family. British holiday makers are part of the exceptional success of Spain’s most popular holiday resort. For us it is an honour to be part of their lives; their fun; their best memories and to exist in the photo albums of those unforgettable summer holidays and warm, quiet winters in the Mediterranean sun. And many of our regular visitors spend even longer periods of time here as they eventually choose our city as their place of residence. Now ‘RTN Benidorm’ is to have an important role in their lives with up to date information on everything that happens in our city and in La Marina Baixa. I would like to extend my best wishes to RTN in this great task to inform and entertain the thousands of British people who have settled in beautiful and cosmopolitan Benidorm.

Benidorm Excess to be curbed by Irena Bodnarec FOLLOWING A picture of a naked man tied to a post in a Benidorm bar appearing on the front page of a national Spanish newspaper last weekend, the Town Hall are working on introducing some kind of public decency bylaw. The somewhat scathing article has led to much debate and controversy on social networks about the image that is being presented to the world of this family friendly resort. The Brits tend to have a reputation as wild party animals when abroad – especially the Stag and Hen groups, who flock in their thousands to have a good time and take advantage of the cheap alcohol. Councillor for Tourism, Gema Amor stated that this image is not good for the reputation of the resort whereas a spokesperson for the PSOE claims that this was an isolated incidence and ´Stag tourism´ is appreciated if done correctly. It has become a contentious issue and so together with the Tourism Foundation will look at ways of curbing the public excesses and image of Benidorm going wild. The issue would possibly have gone unnoticed had it not been right on the Levante beach front, in full view of everyone, including children.

OCTOBER 2014

When the sun doesn’t shine… BENIDORM IS a year round resort and people still flock here even when the sun doesn’t shine. So what is there to do if it’s not warm enough for the beach or pool and you don’t fancy sitting in a bar all day? Well plenty! Terra Natura Wildlife Park Open all year round but from November through to February only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday – with the exception of Christmas and New Year weeks, when it is open all week.

Colci Rincon Cinema Located on Calle Zamora in the Rincon (the road opposite Regente Hotel) shows English speaking films every week – from Monday to Friday at 6.30pm and 8.45pm and over the weekend at 6.30pm only.

Ten Pin Bowling A great fun activity which can be enjoyed by all ages. Benidorm has not one but two bowling alleys. You can either pop to Ozone on the Avda Mediterraneo, open from 10am or pop up to the top floor of the La Marina Shopping Centre - however be aware that it does not open until 4pm.

Bingo Plaza Located at the end of the Avd Mediterraneo just off the Plaza Hispanidad – or ‘The Triangle’. Open daily from 2pm onwards but no under-18s allowed and remember that you need to bring Photo ID – preferably your passport otherwise a photo driving license. For those who prefer slot machines there is a gambling arcade and also a betting shop on the premises.

La Marina Shopping Centre Indoor covered shopping mall with plenty of well-recognised outlets selling clothes, electrical gadgets, items for the home and a toy shop among many others. There is a selection of cafes to sit down and take a break too. The number 2 bus takes you there from the centre of Benidorm.

Indoor Market in the Rincon de Loix Located on the Avd Mediterraneo, it is an Aladdin’s cave of hidden treasures. You can browse around 80 independent shops, treat yourself to a hair or beauty treatment, exchange money or take the weight off your feet and have a drink…and all without having to go outsider and get wet. Open Monday to Friday until 6pm and on Saturday until 3pm with the benefit that all three entrances are wheelchair/mobility scooter friendly.

Benidorm Circus

A weekly show every Saturday starts at 6pm. No animals feature in any of the performances - instead it incorporates traditional clowns alongside dramatic and imaginative acrobatic acts: something to appeal to all ages.

Ship Ahoy! MONDAY 13th OCTOBER will be a memorable day for Benidorm as it welcomes its very first cruise ship to the resort.

MS Amadea is coming to Benidorm

by Irena Bodnarec The MS Amadea will be dropping anchor in the bay at 7:30am and ferrying passengers to the harbor in the Old Town, allowing them to spend an entire morning exploring the delights that Benidorm has to offer. The

German based ship will be carrying 1,500 passengers and will certainly be a great financial boost to the local economy – lets just hope that the bars, cafes and shops decide to open a little earlier to take advantage! The Town Hall, Tourism Foundation and Local Police have had sev-

eral meetings to ensure that the day runs smoothly and that there are plenty of people on hand to assist. It will certainly be a unique photo opportunity for those visiting Benidorm – and may this be the first of many more stops on the International Cruise circuit.

Rice Week r e b o t c O h t 9 1 y a d n u S 13th 8

OCTOBER 2014

Monday by Irena Bodnarec

WITH THE resort attracting more foreign tourists each year it is essential to focus attention on the things that the town does well - and cuisine comes high on the list. Many of the Brits coming over are only just discovering tapas, which is probably the thing most associate with Spain after sun, sand and euro pints. It is quite easy to come on holiday here and never sample any Spanish food, especially with so many British pubs in the area serving traditional British fry ups or Sunday roasts... Also with the emergence of so many All Inclusive hotels Spanish food is something that unfortunately many will not discover - one of the hazards of this phenomenon. The Town Hall and Department of Tourism are passionate about emphasizing the importance of establishing Benidorm as a centre of Gastronomic cuisine - something that in the past has not been automatically associated with the town. Earlier in the year they launched the 2014 Gastronomic food calendar of events taking place in the resort - and the last of these takes place this month - Rice Week, starting on Monday 13th until Sunday 19th October. 20 restaurants are taking part in this week long extravaganza, with the aim of showcasing a wide range of dishes available - similar to the Tapas week back in April. On each day of the week the participating restaurants will offer a different 3 course menu - with the main course obviously being a rice dish, including wine for 20€. There are some very exotic combinations and new creations to sample such as

rice with anchovies and spinach which you can try at Taperia Aurerra – the Aurerra Group of restaurants are the biggest and longest established in Tapas Alley. The participating restaurants are spread around the resort but you can pick up a booklet from any of the Tourist Information Offices entitled “Jornadas de la Arroces” which will list each restaurant, location and their daily menu. The event will hopefully endeavour to highlight that Benidorm is, to some, an undiscovered Gastronomic heaven.

Cancer Fundraising afternoon

By Irena Bodnarec FRIDAY 24th OCTOBER is the date of the next big charity fundraising event in Benidorm – this time to raise money for “ Pequeño Deseo” – the Spanish version of Britain’s Make a Wish Foundation” and the “AECC”, the National Spanish Cancer Charity. The venue is The Plaza, a popular British pub – and one of the Vincents Traditional Corner Pubs in the Rincon de Loix, with the fun beginning at at 2:00pm. Once again a host of top class Benidorm acts will be giving up their time for the benefit of those less fortunate than themselves – so lets all make our way there to support the event. There will be raffle prizes galore, with many items generously donated by local businesses – so bring plenty of money with you! The afternoon is scheduled to last until 8:00pm and if anybody would like to make any donations please contact the organizer Gary, from the Giving4Giving Charity shop in La Nucia on 603 137 697 or pop in on any morning.

International Day

BENIDORM WILL host its second International Day on Saturday 11th October at the Park L´Aiguere, located behind the Town Hall in the Old Town.

by Irena Bodnarec 22 COUNTRIES will be showcasing their cultures – with the British stand proudly represented by volunteers of the Royal British Legion. Marilyn Rogers, Social Secretary of the Benidorm & District Branch will take the opportunity to display the organisations Poppy related memorabilia, ahead of the official Poppy Appeal launch, which takes place the following week, on Wednesday 15th October.

Benidorm´s most successful ex-pat businesswoman, Christine Climent, owner of Benidorm Palace has been asked by the Mayor to make an opening speech, both in Spanish and English – and she will take to the stage at 7pm. Lets all turn out to give her a huge round of applause and support out RBL volunteers, who work relentlessly to fundraise. Last year they raised an incredible 13,269€ 104% increase on the year before…. lets help ensure we break that record this year!

Curing a pain in the back CHRONIC BACK pain can bring misery to both young and old but advanced medical techniques at Hospital Clinica Benidorm helps patients return to a normal life. by Jack Troughton A multi-disciplinary team is on hand to insure the best care is available and practical solutions are offered to safeguard a quality of life. Neurologist Dr Karim Ben Ghezala is a spine specialist and admits that acute back pain will affect 70% of the population at some time in their lives – normally dealt with ‘conservatively’ by pain relief and physiotherapy. “It’s a bit like having to go to the dentist”. However, should the situation last more than three months and be upgraded to chronic lumber pain, the situation needs a complete diagnosis. The doctor said: “We find out step by step about the cause.” The neurologist said doctors split patients into two groups – younger and older. When speaking about the spine, older patients are over 60-years-old.

SLIPPED DISC “In most cases young patients have suffered a slipped disc – if this happens we have to evaluate whether the problem is big or small. If it’s small, we continue with conservative treatment but if there is a neurological problem we must decide what technique is best,” said Dr Ben Ghezala, who qualified in German and became a spinal specialist before moving to Spain. “Today the gold standard is micro-surgery or endoscopic surgery. Both are offered here at Hospital Clinica Benidorm.” He added: “In a young patient, depending on the technique used, we have a very quick recuperation. Some are afraid they cannot return to play sport and normal activity – usually they return to a completely normal life.” Older patients can also suffer a slipped disc but are also more likely to suffer instability, more degeneration of the spine, muscle wastage and spinal canal stenosis. Micro-surgery is still possible but the med-

Dr Ben Ghezala

ical team will also consider surgery to fix a joint with screws and sometimes a protective cage – it depends on the individual. Older patients also lose the ability to walk long distances and lose power. QUALITY “Nowadays we have changes in people’s quality of life – people in their seventies play tennis and golf – and they come to us looking for solutions. There are solutions, for sure – easy solutions that give them back this

quality of life,” said Dr Ben Ghezala. He said there were many improvements in the techniques available. “50 years ago there was just a hammer and a nail – now we have 2,000 hammers. “We have a lot more techniques in the medical industry and more techniques in the evolution of spinal surgeons.” For more information about Hospital Clinica Benidorm call 96 585 3850 or visit www.clinicabenidorm.com

Eyes d wn OCTOBER 2014

Have you ever walked past bars in Benidorm with boards advertising “Eyes Down” and wondered why they don´t call it bingo. The reason being, it is illegal to gamble in Spain outside of authorized establishments. If you do fancy a flutter pop into Bingo Plaza, which is one of the only fully legalised place to play bingo in Benidorm - located next to McDonalds on the Plaza Hispanidad, otherwise referred to as The Triangle, where the huge rubber tree is. Bingo Plaza is open every day from 2pm until 2am - and on Friday and Saturday it stays open until 3am. Just like a casino you have to be over the age of 18 to enter and show photographic ID, it is best to take your passport. The number is recorded and you are then allowed to enter, which is free (the casino in Alicante charge 3 euros entry). You have to wait until the enter light above the door lights up... they do not allow you to go in whilst a game is in progress. What you will find rather strange is that they are not allowed to advertise what the prize money is outside of the building. In the UK, places such as Gala Bingo have huge billboards plastered up with the jackpot prize, but here in Spain it is not allowed. It is not until you enter the huge hall that you can see the prize money advertised on screens around the room. You will be quite shocked as to how large and plush it is upon entering inside – it has a seating capacity for 600, spread across 100 round tables. Each table has 6 chairs and set flush into the middle of the table is an LED monitor, allowing you to follow the progress of the numbers as they are called. Each table has marker pens so you don´t need to worry about bringing your own pens. Each game lasts about 5 minutes - there are prizes for 1

complete line (5 numbers) then onto a full house. There are between 10 and 12 games per hour, so as you can tell its quite fast paced! The numbers are called in Spanish but if you are not familiar with the language just watch the screen. When you have a complete line you shout “linea” or “line” and hold up your hand. Someone will come to you and leave a marker on your table then the game continues till full house is called. You are given your prize money there and then in cash at the end of the game. If there is more than one winner then the prize pot is shared, which is the same as in the UK. People come and go after each game as they please. The prize money is dependent on how many people are playing... the more people the bigger the prize pot. Throughout the day they also have extra bonus jackpots... for instance, the first game of each day has a full house bonus of 1000 euros on top of the normal win - this is to entice people to come when it first opens at 2pm.

13

Before the start of each game an attendant will walk around the room selling bingo cards for that game. One card costs 1.50€ but there are some bonus games which are 2€ each ... these obviously have bigger prizes. You can play as many cards as you want per game, but to begin with stick with one till you get the hang of it! After the game has finished the attendants walk around again for the next game... you can play as often as you want. On each table you will also find a button to summon a waiter to order drinks and there is even an option to eat there – you won´t believe how cheap it is either. During the day a 3 course menu del dia is 3.60€ which includes a drink and in the evening it is only 3€. You can also order a sandwich which comes with chips and a drink for 4€ - the prices are heavily subsidised and the quality top class, so no need to leave the premises to eat. Why not give it a go – just remember to take your passport.

OCTOBER 2014

see the sights

Rincon de Loix

View from ‘the hill’

THE AREA often referred to as The Rincon is part of what is deemed the ‘New Town’, probably the most popular location with British holidaymakers. IT IS certainly the life and soul of the resort and where you will find all the nightlife. The vast, sandy beach is lined with bars and restaurants which are lively to say the least. You will definitely find all your home comforts here such as all day British breakfasts, UK television in most bars and fantastic value food and drink. During the day you are spoilt for choice of activities. Here you will find Aqualandia, the biggest waterpark in Spain and Mundomar, a marine animal park, both at the far end and next door to each other. For the adventurous there is the cable water ski which is found at the beginning of the Levante beach – great for adrenalin junkies. One of the most breath taking views to be had of resort must be from the top of the Sierra Helada, often referred to as ‘The Hill’. Many holidaymakers trek up to the top, where you will find a Benidorm landmark: The Cross… just be aware

that it’s a good 45-minute trek to the top! Terra Mitica theme park is a great day trip with its exciting rides and shows, suitable for the entire family and not far away you will find Wildlife Park Terra Natura and beside it Aqua Natura, a smaller waterpark more suited for younger children. For golfers, the magnificent Villaitana golf course offers two 18-hole courses with a view of the Benidorm skyline. Every Saturday night and held all year round is The Circus. Starting at 6pm and located behind Benidorm Palace, you will be captivated for over two hours (children are not compulsory to attend!) And for a first class night out you cannot beat Benidorm Palace – probably the most visited attraction in Benidorm and you are guaranteed a night to remember with its magnificent show. The Rincon is where you will find all the

Poniente/La Cala

cabaret bars and nightclubs, open well into the early hours. With the bars brimming over every night you will be spoilt for choice as to where to head. Most of the bars offer free entertainment and you can hear and watch a huge variety of very talented people ranging from singers, tribute groups and comedians catering to all tastes. And last but not least, the legend - Sticky Vicky!

The Old Town

THE OLD Town is located between the Levante and Poniente beaches, a far cry from the ‘British Square’ in the Rincon, that people associate with Benidorm. This area is like stepping back in time – full of narrow, cobbled streets adorned with white washed houses and an abundance of boutiques, bars and restaurants. Head toward the blue-domed church and at the top you will arrive at the lookout point, or Mirador as the locals would say. The climb up to the top is certainly worth it for the wonderful view of both bays. On your way back down, stop off at the famous Tapas Alley – which as the name suggests is a street full of tapas bars. If you are fed up with pie and chips and fancy a real taste of Spain, this is where you should go. The Old Town is also where you will find the Gay quarter – hugely popular for an alternative night out. A visit to the Rich Bitch Showbar and Kaffe Klee are a must if you appreciate drag humour and the many gay bars make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. Mal Pas beach is located in the Old Town and it is from this harbour that you can catch a boat to both Tabarca Island and Calpe, great days out.

STARTING AT Parc del Elche in the Old Town, generally referred to as Dove Park due to the hundreds of white doves, is Poniente beach, which runs for more than 3km and finishes at La Cala. The promenade, which runs along the entire length of the beach, won an architectural award for its innovative multi-coloured wave design and is certainly worth seeing. This side of Benidorm is much quieter, so great if you just want to relax and unwind. At the far end of Poniente you will find La Cala – which technically belongs to the town of Finestrat but everyone refers to it as Benidorm. The skyline is dominated by two buildings – the Gran Hotel Bali and the newly constructed ‘Intempo’ twin towers, with its gold clad frontage, rumoured to be the tallest residential building in Europe. Away from the beach you will find the La Marina indoor shopping centre – a great way to while away a few hours to enjoy some retail therapy whilst on the top floor there is a 10-pin bowling alley to keep the men and kids amused. If you fancy a bit of a thrill head to Karting Finestrat – located behind the shopping centre on the mountain side with beautiful views over Benidorm.

A VISIT to Benidorm can be so much more than simply sun, sea and sangria.

PARC DE ELCHE

Better known to the Brits as ‘Dove Park’, it can be found at the beginning of Poniente Beach on the edge of the Old Town: a lovely, shady park area with plenty of palm trees. Here you can sit and ‘people watch’ with a massive population of white doves which you can feed – very popular with the Spanish.

BALCON DEL MEDITERRANEO

By Dave Gaskell – realbenidorm.net OF COURSE there is plenty of the aforementioned in abundance. However, take a look around you and for those who like to discover a little local history whilst also keeping fit there is plenty to keep you occupied as a Benidorm visitor. A short Bus journey (No.3) from Park Elx (Bus Stop in front of Hotel Mar Blau) by the harbour will take you to the lovely bay of Cala de Finestrat, where high above the bay is a gem of walk up to the watchtower of Agulió on the peak of the hill. You cannot miss it! Part of the old coastal defences since the XVI century built to look out for invaders and latterly as part of a series of towers looking out for Smugglers avoiding payment of taxes to customs. The walk is easy to medium difficulty and is best reached by taking the road to the far left (with your back to the beach) from where there is a newly laid path to the tower. With a few stops on the way to take in the stunning scenery or sit and enjoy a drink at one of the picnic tables, the walk should take just 25 minutes from the beach. Once on the peak you can see almost a ¼ of the entire Land of Valencia toward Benidorm and Calpe in the north to Alicante and Villajoyosa in the south. This is one of the best kept secrets in the area with rarely another soul sharing the views and tranquillity with you. The phrase “Breath Taking” often misused by holiday brochures really does seem apt here, the scenery and views truly are breath taking. This is a perfect location to see the sunrise or the sunset. For those who prefer a more vigorous walk, from the tower it is possible to continue the path too Villajoyosa and back, a very pleasant circuit of two and a half hours at a stroll. This is well signposted along the route and is known as the “Colada de la Costa”. Later head back to Benidorm for a much deserved evening meal and drinks on the terraces with plenty of time to contemplate your next Benidorm visit.

The giant rock jutting out directly in front of the Levante beach is ap 4 km from the shore. You can catch a glass bottomed boat from the marina at Mal Pas which gives you some amazing views of the reef and fish then explore the wildlife and bird population on the island.

Located up in the Old Town, right at the top and often referred to as the Mirador. A little bit of a steep climb but well worth it when you see the beautiful panoramic views of both the bays. You can also access it from Mal Pas beach where there is a staircase which leads all the way up. A very pretty blue and white tiled gazebo with seating makes a lovely backdrop for a photo and the square has a selection of bars so you can take in the stunning scenery.

hit, particularly with young families. There are lots of shows throughout the day and you can even book to swim with the sea lions or get up close to the dolphins. However, both of these need to be pre-booked. It is really easy to get to there: if driving the best place to head for is Benidorm Palace - then take the road almost opposite and it will take you all the way there - about a 2 minute drive. OCTOBER 2014

Say HelloDuckie!

OUR QUACKING reporter takes a flying visit to Benidorm Island KNOWING THAT Ducks have no fear of water, we sent our intrepid reporter for a day on Benidorm Island. GETTING TO THE ISLAND Daily boats run all year from 10am departing at the harbour in the old town and from the jetty at Playa Levante (summer only) in the Rincon de Loix, below the Lido Hotel. The 25 minute journey offers stunning views of Benidorm and superb photo opportunities as you head to the famous island. Adults cost 14€ and children 11€, Ducks are free! The price includes a trip on a yellow submarine. Boats run every hour or so during the daytime. Obligatory photo taken as you board! LAND AHOY The trip across the sea is great for a family and for a cost of 50€ for a family of four is acceptable for a morning out. As you approach the island you notice just how big this home for Birds above the water and marine life below actually is. The cliffs tower 240 feet above sea level. WE ALL LIVE IN A YELLOW SUBMARINE As soon as you land and before getting your wobbly sea legs sorted you are hurriedly herded into the little yellow submarine with 24 sea mates. Of course the submarine whilst looking just like the one the Beatles sang about is actually a glass bottom for you to enjoy a short journey to the bottom of the seas. Yes, there are some fish to see and it is a rather

unique experience, but you cannot help notice that the fish are fed to ensure they are always on hand to entertain. As a Duck I do not over eat but these fish were rather on the fat side of healthy. A WALK TO THE TOP OF THE ISLAND WILL LEAVE YOU FEELING POOPED After an underwater adventure, I flew to the very top of the island. You will have to walk or course! Follow the path to the top of the cliffs. The first thing you notice is that the island is a haven for 1000´s of seabirds and as such entirely covered in bird poop in a big way! I did say you will feel pooped, you have been warned! Putting this aside it is well worth the hike to the top simply to enjoy the views and say you have done it. If you love seabirds you will be in heaven, even if there habits are not as clean as us Ducks. ENJOY A SWIM OR A BITE TO EAT BEFORE HEADING BACK TO BENIDORM Return boats are frequent giving you plenty of time to enjoy a swim off the rocks by the café or just a drink or a menu of the day in the terrace café, a pleasant place to sit and soak up the views of the coast. A soft drink comes in at 2€, a menu of the day with house salad, roast chicken, dessert and a drink costs 14€. All in all a trip worth doing, so you can say you have done

it. The boat trip is good, the island is a protected bird sanctuary so do not expect much to see or do. It is what it is and deserves a few hours of holiday time to see what all the fuss is about. The obligatory photo is waiting for you as you disembark. A ceramic souvenir bowl with your photo in the bottom for 10€. I declined the offer, ducks have no place for bowls, but lots of fellow passengers did make a purchase. A pleasant few hours, a trip to add to the must do list – ENJOY. markets

Not a lot of people know this! Fabulous fresh fish, local meats, Spanish cheeses, regional fruit and veg all from the little “April Market” by Dave Gaskell – realbenidorm.net In ten years I have never ventured into the Mercado Abril or as we would say “April Market”, in the centre of Benidorm old town. I have often walked past it but never though it worthy of a visit, as sadly from the outside you would be mistaken to presume that it holds little of interest to us keen shoppers of fresh local produce. What appears to be just another bazaar probably full of rather naff Chinese imported grot is actually a superb little place to shop for genuine local fresh foods. This remarkable little market retains the feel of markets like they used to be and how they should be! Real local family run businesses selling lovely produce with great service, fruit and veg supplied by local growers from

the region plus fish caught by local fishermen and quality meat from family butchers who know their trade. Pop along to see Ana for a superb assortment of fruit, or the beautiful Charcuteria for a very yummy selection of sliced meats, hams and fine cheeses. If meat is your thing then a couple of long established butchers will sort you out with exactly what you want, prepared before your very eyes. Enjoy a snack or a coffee at the little onsite café whilst you decide on your next purchase or simply to people watch for a while. Mercado Abril is a great asset to Benidorm and deserves our patronage as places like this are disappearing rapidly as the greedy corporate supermarket chains, who have already cleaned up out of town, are now busy causing the demise of the small family

business with their pint sized “shop local” stores that are springing up all over Spain on a daily basis. I say shop local and buy local, it really does make a difference to the local community if you spend a few or your Euros buying some genuine local fresh food. Look at label, if it is not from the Valencia or Murcia regions or has been produced outside of Spain then put it down and look for something that has not had to travel as far as you have! Buying genuine local stuff mean much more of each of your Euro will directly benefit people who live and work here. Mercado Abril can be found in the little side street “Calle Del Sol” located half way along Calle Gambo, the pedestrian street that runs from Plaza Triangular up to the Hotel Avenida.

Jalon Valley

ON OUR own doorstep located just 30-40 minutes away, we have the award winning wine making region of Jalon. Due to its altitude, protection from the mountains that surround it and the richness of its soil Jalon is one of the largest regions in Spain that produce the “Moscatel” wine, which is a sweet wine a little like sherry in its appearance and taste. The Muscat grape that produces the wine is also used to make raisins. Jalon is not just famous for its wines though. The valley is lined with Almond trees and in February and March when the trees blossom the sea of pink & white blossom that covers the valley draws people by the coach load to see the beautiful sight. Guadalest & Algar Waterfalls GUADALEST AND the Algar waterfalls are two of the most visited places on the Costa Blanca and with good reason! The Village of Guadalest set high on the “Sierra Bernia” Mountain Range, dates back to 715AD and during its colourful past has been the cause and saviour of many battles. The town today is home to just 200 inhabitants that have dedicated their lives to tourism. The maze of cobbled streets are lined with Cafés & shops selling local craftwork and museums of miniatures, torture and other articles of interest that you must take time to go in and explore. Guadalest is visited by countless thousands each year and we definitely recommend it as one of the best trips out of Benidorm. Just a short distance from Guadalest is the small hamlet of Algar and the famous waterfalls. The falls have been featured on the ITV hit sit-com Benidorm and were also the set of the Timotei hair shampoo and offer a great day out for all ages. The falls are set on various levels, each one offering a different experience, from turbulent pools and diving points to relaxing lagoons and swimming areas. Even if you are not daring enough to enter the icy mountain waters, there is plenty to see at the falls and we recommend this as another one of the best trips out of Benidorm. Round Town Travel offer day trips to both of these fantastic locations and on a Monday run a combined trip that gives you the best of both for just 19.50€ for Adults and 17.00€ for kids. BENISSA

It is a true pleasure strolling through the cobbled streets of this historical and little-known old town. The typical “Mediterranean style” whitewashed town houses, centuries-old walls and stately homes form part of this perfectly conserved little town that is filled with atmosphere. horoscopes A twist of fate brings a clash of energies between Mars and Uranus very early on this month. This is not the time to let go of anything, and if you have to fight for your rights then you know that it is for a good cause. Things do get better later on in the month, but stick to your guns and rise to any challenge that may just come your way! Romantic Venus encounters lucky Jupiter and ensures that an affair of the heart survives and prospers. It is time in your relationship to eliminate some of the fear that is holding you back from the idyllic harmony that you both need right now. You have nothing to gain by being suspicious and everything to gain from showing your desire.

Quick Crossword

Mercury turns retrograde to start the month. You would be advised to take things easy for a time to allow for the adjustment and to see things in a positive light. You are strangely moody and non receptive, but midmonth have to take an opportunity that comes your way. You need to be alert and tune with what you both want and need right now! Not just a Full Moon but a Lunar Eclipse comes together on October 8th. This is going to be something that you take in your stride, but not at the detriment for that which you have been recently working towards. Take time to feel that you are closer now to the truth, and that positive power is your rock in the heaviest of storms at sea. The Sun sextiles Jupiter and Mars this month. This illuminates work to be done and a strategy to be taken. You may have to accept that you may well have been barking up the wrong tree, and in so doing have taken umbrage for no good reason. Take time out to examine your innermost self, because that is where redemption and success truly lie.

Sudoku

Spiteful actions have sincerely hurt you, but it is how you deal with all this that will show your true colours. This is a chance to get back, get even, but if you act as if you have far more important things to attend to and ignore events you will rise to the top. Mercury tips the balance of the scales of Libra bringing a dynamic love energy closer!! Same old same old. You have to agree to break this routine you have hidden behind just lately. Stop refusing invitations, and spend time with loyal friends who seem to want to support you whatever. There comes a loophole in an action with Virgo that just might open your eyes to things and help to show you where to put your next foot forwards. Mars enters into explicit actions with Capricorn, and this is just the time to put your pent up energy into positive and motivationally good use. What you see at the present as negative should be neatly turned around to make the difference that you need. Things won’t get better by themselves, but the basis of positive power should inspire. Mars interacts with Jupiter, and may delay something you have been working towards. There is a good reason for this, which is about to be revealed to you shortly. There is also a side to the story you are not aware of, and though you will kick yourself for not seeing things develop the way that they must, you are certainly not to be blamed. Mars ingresses Capricorn, and allows you to rise to the occasion for a change. There are many ways to skin a rabbit, but you are very right to stick to the principles that you believe in. With hindsight there is something pressing that you would never have got involved in, but everything this month is happening for good reason.

Both the Sun and Venus are in opposition this month, so it looks as if you have the time to take some very much needed rest and relaxation. Since you know that you are in the throws of a very busy period of your life; it is time to look at things in a new way, with pressures removed from the situation, and forward intuitive planning in the bag. Venus beguiles Neptune right at the start of the month, and it is love that will save the day, if you let it. The

Coffee break interview

FOLLOWING LAST months hugely successful Pride, most people now recognise Sammy Kruz – one of the main organisers and face of Benidorm Pride. He got involved with Pride 2 years ago whilst a radio presenter on HotFM, together with fellow presenter and entertainer Jessie Brooke. Sammy arrived in Benidorm on a one way ticket from Brighton, where he lived for 2 years and immediately charmed himself a job at what was then the Happy Handbag Bar. He has worked at most of Benidorm´s prestigious bars – Queens, Chaplins, 7th Heaven, Mojitos and currently Operations Manager at Sensations, where you will catch him every night from 8pm till the early hours. Then on Thursday, Friday & Saturday he is DJ at Peoples from 2am until 4:30am for those that want to carry on partying. He lives alone with Holly Dolly – his pussycat, in the heart of the Old Town. It´s probably just as well that he lives in an apartment as when he was younger he had a pet pig called Spud – which lived to a ripe old age and didn´t end up as a crispy bacon sandwich as Sammy is a lifelong committed vegetarian…

apparently he bakes a mean carrot and oak cake! He is counting down the days till he goes to watch his favourite diva, Lady Gaga – who is performing up in Barcelona next month. Sammy is already working on the Pride 2015 agenda, which will be in the 1st half of September - joining forces once again with Geoff Gartland. He is a fantastic organiser as was evident and would like to get more involved in events – toying with a ´Party in the Park´ idea…. watch this space! Where are you from in the UK? Entertainer of the month - Abba Nights IF YOU want to watch a dazzling boogy woogie feel good show, then ´ABBA Nights´ is a must. Jo Hollingworth and Tina Dresser were introduced to each other thanks to Lynn – owner of the popular Carousel Bar in Benidorm and haven´t stopped since pairing up over a year ago. The stunning sexy pair have a dynamic chemistry which is evident on stage, as they manage to captivate the entire audience with their energy and enthusiasm. Tina has been in Benidorm for only 19 months, making the move from Liverpool, but has certainly made an impact with her mane of stunning blonde hair. But she is not just a pretty face – she can sing and dance to a professional

standard, which is evident having toured with Tom Jones and Bonny Tyler during her last 15 years in show biz. But Jo is also a very talented lady, having trained as a professional dancer and run a children´s acting and drama school for the last few years here in Spain. But now instead of hiding backstage where her talent was hidden, she is centre stage back where she belongs. Jo moved to Spain as a child and has lived in Benidorm, the Costa Blanca’s entertainment capital for the last 6 years. The duo have certainly bough glamour back to Benidorm – with Tina taking on the persona of Agnetha and Jo transforming into Frida, with the help of a wig. The dazzling outfits

which the pair wear, accompanied with platform knee high boots are all made and designed by Carol Warrilow, who also happens to be Tina´s mum and the pairs vocal coach. They always open the show with Mama Mia and close with Thank You for the Music – with many popular Abba hits in between which everyone ends up singing along to. The girls work 7 nights a week and you can catch then at Morgans on Wednesday & Saturday at 9pm; UK Cabaret Club on Monday & Friday at 9pm; Riviera Music Lounge on Monday & Friday at 11pm and the Explorer Club, located at the Ambassador Hotel at 10:30pm on Tuesday and 8:30pm on Thursday.

20th Anniversary party at Klee Kafee KLEE KAFEE in the Old Town has been pulling in the crowds for the last 20 years – and by way of thanks, the current owner Joe is putting on a special party to celebrate the occasion to thank all the thousands of people who have supported them over the years!

By Irena Bodnarec The venue is very popular with both residents and holiday makers and in its 20 years has only actually had 3 owners. Paula and Monique - the original Dutch owners, are coming over from Holland especially for the 3 day birthday party, which is being held from Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th October. On Saturday night Sheila Blige will be doing a special performance – she doesn´t normally work on a Saturday, but the main party is on Sunday 5th. A star studded line up of cabaret artistes will entertain from 5pm onwards – with some amazing talent coming over from Holland for the auspicious occasion, including some superb drag queens. At 10:15pm the outrageous Horror Sisters will take to the stage – they have in fact been performing exclusively at Klee Kafee for the last 18 years! The boys, Alan and Mike look no nearer to slowing down despite their ages – it´s obviously what keeps them young at heart! They currently work two nights a week – Sunday and Wednesday. Michael will be 70 next month (unbelievably Alan is 79) and Klee will be putting on a special birthday celebration on Sunday 19th October to mark the memorable event. There will be a special line up of entertainers – with Miss Jordan Rivers and Miss Shape of The Ritch Bitch Show Bar leading the tributes. Klee Kafee draw in the crowds every night thanks to the combination of superb entertainment, great service and the legendary free sandwiches and nibbles on offer during the interval – just check out the reviews on Trip Advisor! If you want a guaranteed good night, with plenty of laughter then pop down to Klee Kafee – 20 years in business certainly proves that they are doing something right. The weekend celebrations are open to everyone and Joe Horror Sisters looks forwards to welcoming you all through the doors.

Café Olé - The place to be CAFÉ OLÉ was definitely the place to have been for the official relaunch gala party. A cava reception was followed by a fantastic 5 course meal which diners enjoyed while being serenaded by a host of entertainers. But the highlight was certainly a flamenco show, performed by the Spanish dance troupe “Compañia De Flamenco JM” - led by Jay Markwick, the Director, Choreographer and lead dancer - it was a visual delight enjoyed by all and stopped many passers by in their tracks. Now under new British ownership, there is a fantastic team of helpful and attentive staff - overseen by the charming and charismatic manager Peter. Café Ole is located on the Avd del Derramador - the road leading up to the outdoor market and facing the back of the Hotel Helios. The huge outdoor terrace is jam packed every Wednesday and Sunday afternoon as the live entertainment, on from 12 noon until 3pm attracts swathes of people en-route from the market. The Belgian influenced menu contains specialties such a slow cooked tender beef braised in beer and Dutch apple cake – all the food is home made and carefully prepared by chef Lizzy, formally of Paneils. The portions are certainly ample and you won´t leave feeling hungry! Open from 11am until 11pm (closed on Saturday), they offer an extensive menu ranging from breakfast – available until 7pm, all day snacks, menu del dia and a la carte from 7pm onwards. On market days they have a BBQ which is cooked on the terrace – the smells wafting across tantalizing the taste buds. In addition to the food menu, they offer a vast selection of beers – with many Belgian labels and all spirits are premium labels, served at the table. From 1st October they will also have a cocktail menu, featuring an incredible selection of 15 plus a choice of 5 non alcoholic ones. They will also be hosting regular Theme Nights – the first, a Country & Western Night to be held on Friday 17th October with a delicious selection of BBQ ribs and steaks… booking certainly recommended.
