THE MINISTRY of Education for the region of Murcia is preparing measures to expand teacher training in foreign languages. They expect that all municipalities in the region will have bilingual schools for the next academic year.

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Universities has set a goal for next year in that all families who wish their children to receive their education in Spanish and English can have this possibility. This was announced this week by Minister Pedro Antonio Sánchez in the Regional Assembly, where he appeared at his own request to report on the measures taken by the Department in promoting and enhancing language teaching in the Educational System of the Region of Murcia. He noted that the scheme has proved to be very popular with this year 44,000 students taking up the offer, 13,500 more than last year, to pursue their studies in Spanish and English.

“For this year we have increased by one-third the number of students receiving bilingual education, thereby responding to the needs of families and society because mastering a second language is more and more a necessity. Centres and teams of teachers are making a great effort, but we must all continue to work and offer the program in all municipalities, to have at least one bilingual school next year, “said the minister.

WITH ORIHUELA’S political system almost coming to a standstill over the last term of office, ghosts from the past are now rising as part of the Brugal Case. The multi million-euro investigation began in the early months of 2006 after some secret recordings were made with an Orihuela councillor, which highlighted some alleged illegalities in the award of the local garbage contract.

The case was featured on Spain’s Channel Six over the weekend and painted a very poor picture of the dealings of local government and the millions of euros that can be made by garbage companies.

This week, an Orihulea Judge processed 35 people for corruption in the case of refuse collection in Orihuela, which is very bad timing for some of those who still have political ambitions in the May 2015 municipal elections.

3 in Orihuela is processing within the Brugal case concerning alleged illegalities in the award of the urban waste collection service.

Among the accused and an alleged beneficiary is oriolano Ángel Fenoll, plus several councillors.

The Judge consulted a summary of nearly seventy pages that highlighted evidence of bribery, trespass, prohibited trading, fraud, coercion and trafficking influences, among others.

Ten of those originally investigated have received a provisional dismissal in the case, including councillors David Antonio Costa, Araceli Vilella and Antonio Francisco Francoandreu plus Laura Boyer, of whom the court considered them as four “straw men” along with Fenoll’s brother Ramón and detective Manuel Rey Parente.

The latter is considered as the author of the hidden recordings commissioned by a rival entrepreneur, who eight years ago uncovered the scandal of alleged corruption that was dubbed Brugal, and has taken the investigation to twenty separate regions of the province of Alicante. The case continues…

Floating homes to reactivate the marine market

Torrevieja’s new Floating Home pilot scheme offers another choice for investors and residents alike

by Keith Nicol FOR THE past few months, one corner berth of Torrevieja’s Marina Salinas has been home to Spain’s first custom built house boat. The pilot scheme is an attempt to see if it is possible to reactivate the marine and residential business while taking advantage of the sun and good weather, which Torrevieja has in abundance.

If the project goes ahead it could be just what is needed to help revive some of Spain’s harbours and marinas, which have unemployment rates of 50%. At the present time. “Promoting a residential complex of this kind in a sports marina is feasible due to unemployment rates hovering around 50% in Spain and 40% in locations such as Torrevieja. Regarding moorings of the 700 available there are 300 empty,” says Alejandro Perez-Ojeda, manager of design and technical direction of the project, along with David Checa Martín, chief engineer of the Bureau of Naval Engineering.

Although this type of accommodation is well established in other European countries, especially those with canal and river systems such as England, the Netherlands and Germany, the concept is very new to Spain.

At the moment the company is negotiating with the management of Marina Salinas to see if the concept will fit in with current regulations. Torrevieja has three Marinas with both the International Marina and Marina Salinas having yachts that are used as liveonboard all year round, however the yachts rarely, if ever, actually leave port.

Before the crisis, in 2005, sailing yacht ac-

tivity was buoyant but with the advent of the economic problems many boat owners decided to sell them due to the enormous costs of maintenance and mooring charges.

For sports marinas, one big advantage would be the possibility of double occupancy in the same berth space. Floating Homes built to this high standard also offer an alternative to hotels and other residential offerings, could be rented out or used as commercial offerings, with many entertainment options available to clubs, such as relaxation areas.

Since mooring fees are charged by the meter, it can make living onboard a very inexpensive option. For example, the houseboats ranging from 15 meters long to 5 meters wide, mooring rental cost would be around 4,000€ a year or less than 80€ a week. Obviously the main cost that must be added is the purchase of the vessel and payment of electricity and water, the later of which is done through the Marina.

“The selling price is between 100,000€ and 150,000€, depending on the size of the house.

For example, the pilot-house, which can accommodate eight people, could be rented for between 1,000€ and 2,500€ per week in high season, which includes the mooring and cleaning services,” Perez-Ojeda says.

The project was launched in early February to cacth the attention of visiting tourists.

“We want this project to draw the attention of investors in tourism development,” said Perez-Ojeda. Interest has already been shown by private investment groups, looking at new ways to increase tourism and add to, especially in Torrevieja’s case, the lack of hotel beds.

Breat Cancer awareness today at noon

by Keith Nicol TODAY, FRIDAY 17th October Breast Cancer Awareness Day is being highlighted in Torrevieja’s main square, in front of the Town Hall. Starting at noon, information booths and experienced advisors will be on hand to pass out information and give one on one advice to visitors.

On Wednesday, the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the Councillor for Health, Mamen Mateo, territorial director Hospital Quirón Torrevieja (previously Hospital San Jaime), Rafael Giménez, and the President of the Association of Families and People with Cancer Torrevieja (AFECÁNCER), Raquel Paez noted that they will be in attendance Friday, October 17, at 12:00 noon in the Plaza of the Constitution. At noon there will be a symbolic balloon release to mark the World Day Against Breast Cancer.

The event is organized by the Hospital Quirón Torrevieja. They will have an information table from 10:00am to 2:00pm, offering tips on preventing this disease and the

importance of early diagnosis.

The balloon release will feature messages of support for the fight against breast cancer and a panel in which any citizen may sign, showing their solidarity against this most awful of ailments. Hospital Quirón Torrevieja has produced a guide, which is available on the website www. quiron.es/es/cancer breast-de-printed and will be distributed at the information table on the Plaza of the Constitution. The hospital emphasizes the importance of early detection of this disease and is making available a guide to self-examination developed by Group.

People outside Britain will only be able to keep existing accounts and will not be allowed to switch to new options, some paying higher rates of interest on savings.

Those with an ‘eSavings’ account – the interest falls from 1% to 0.55% at the end of the month – cannot change because a UK address is needed.

Lloyds introduced new rules last year preventing anyone who is not a British resident from opening a savings account – however, those with an existing facility are allowed to continue to deposit cash. The rules also apply to opening a current account.

The bank does have a ‘Premier International Account’ which pays no interest and costs £20 a month to run unless a balance of £2,500 is maintained. The international ‘Bonus Saver’ pays 0.5% on balances up to £100,000 but this falls to 0.2% after 12 months.

Police bust Fagan-style gang of thieves THE CIVIL Guard has dismantled an organised gang responsible for at least 32 robberies in homes and vehicles in Elche. Eight people have been arrested including four minors: goods and jewellery have been recovered valued in excess of 15,000€ following five house searches. It is thought that the thefts took place mostly in unoccupied homes in the region and that the younger, smaller members of the gang were trained to enter high risk areas that were difficult to access.

Screening begins for Ebola in UK terminals

by Jan Gamm PASSENGER SCREENING began this week at London’s Heathrow, Gatwick and Eurostar with Britain’s Health Secretary Jeremy Hint warning that the UK could see up to ten cases of the deadly Ebola virus by Christmas.

UK-bound air passengers identified by the Border Force on main routes from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea will be checked, allowing for potential

Ebola virus carriers with symptoms who arrive in the UK to be identified, tracked and given rapid access to expert health advice. Anyone testing positive for Ebola will be transferred to the Royal Free Hospital in north London. Meanwhile Spanish health authorities have confirmed that the country will be considered ‘Ebola free’ if no new cases emerge by Monday 27th October. The condition of 44-year-old Nurse Teresa Romero, who has been diagnosed with Ebola, is described as “…serious but improving.”

Police clamp down on Uber users DRIVERS IN Madrid using the Uber app to organise customers are now facing hefty fines. The Guardia Civil began making checks on Monday, authorised to fine drivers up to 6,000€ for using the application that facilitates passenger sharing and swift response for cab calls. Since the Uber app was introduced there have been several clashes in the capital as legally registered drivers protested against ‘unfair competition’. Many of the drivers using Uber are unlicensed and avoid paying commercial vehicle tax. Those who re-offend risk an 18,000€ fine and the confiscation of their vehicle.

The UK could see up to ten cases of the virus by Christmas

Man killed by brick thrown from roof A MAN aged 65 has died after being hit on the head with a brick thrown by an eleven-year-old child from the fourth floor of a building in Ecija, Seville. At first it was thought that the brick was part of some loose cornicing but later investigation led to the identification of a minor who allegedly hurled the brick from the roof at around 12.25pm last Saturday. The wounded man was transferred in critical condition via helicopter to the ICU of Seville’s Virgen del Rocio hospital where he later died. Several residents testified that it was a common practise among a particular group of children to climb to the roof and throw objects onto the street below. The case has been referred to the Children’s Office.

Seaplanes to fly from Pollença to Los Alcazares NEXT YEAR, to mark the centennial of the seaplane, III Splash-In will be held in the scenic port of Pollença, Majorca.

by Keith Nicol As part of the festivities, on the last day of the International Seaplane Festival, participants will fly to Los Alcazares to mount a static exhibition that will be open to the general public.

This week, the Mayor of Los Alcazares, Anastasio Bastida, accompanied by the Councillor Jose Maria Cano, held a technical meeting with the Mayor of Pollença, Bartomeu Encrypt, plus representatives of organizations and institutions from Pollença and State Security Forces, to discuss next year’s event.

The reason for the event in 2015 is to tie-in with the celebration of the centenary of the Spanish Military Seaplane and Los Alcazares. Aerodrome. Bastida said that during the meeting “technical aspects were assessed to ensure the Centennial events are conducted with maximum coordination and security.”

The municipality of Pollença will be host of III Splash-In and Airshow featuring Seaplanes in Puerto Pollensa, from April 19th to May 3rd, 2015. As part of the festivities, on May 2nd, participants will fly their seaplanes to Los Alcazares, where they will remain until the 3rd; setting up a static display of to celebrate 100 years of the Spanish military seaplane.

Rock and Run in Cabo de Palos

THE FIRST Rock and Run event will take place tomorrow, Saturday October 18th. Two top tribute bands, ‘Please’ and ‘De Polis’, along with Sherpa will perform in concert on Saturday on Cabo de Palos port’s esplanade on the occasion of the First Half Marathon of Cartagena.

The music of U2 and The Police will ring in the Rock & Run in Cabo de Palos when Please and De Polis, along with Sherpa perform, starting at 9.30pm. The La Manga Athletics Club and Athletics Federation of the Region of Murcia, in collaboration with the Institute of Tourism and the municipalities of Cartagena and San Javier, have organized this initiative, with the concert being sponsored by Rock FM. In addition to the sporting event, “participants will enjoy this performance and good music at night,” explained the Councillor for Tourism, Palazón Carolina. Music will accompany runners throughout the day, as a festival has been organised at the start, at the Puerto Tomás Maestre, starting at 12.30pm. “Our goal is to raise awareness, not only of La Manga, but all cultural activities that can be performed in Cartagena and San Javier and attendees can participate in the sports that have been prepared for the occasion,” said President La Manga Athletics Club, Norberto Martin.

The sporting event will feature a race or run of 21 kilometres with the maximum duration being three hours.

In addition, a shorter race of 11.5 km and 16 km will be held. Participants will also include the categories of Junior, Veterans and Disabled.

No change to voting rule before election DOWNING STREET has ruled out any changes in voting rules for expats before the May 2015 General Election despite the Tory Party’s manifesto pledge made last month.

by Jack Troughton Veteran campaigner Harry Shindler MBE is part of the Votes-For-Expat-Brits group calling for the 15-year rule which blocks millions of Britons living overseas from voting in UK elections after that time.

But he was disappointed by a letter from 10, Downing Street, which means he must wait six years to cast a ballot.

Harry, who is supported by the European Commission’s Viviane Reding – who believes the rule punishes people for taking up their right to freedom of movement – was delighted by the Conservative’s pledge to change the law if the party won the May 2015 election.

And he believes with support from Coalition partners Liberal Democrats, who have also undertaken to change the law, the ban could have been lifted ahead to the poll.

Harry wrote to Prime Minister David Cameron promises if the change was made he would show his gratitude by campaigning for expats to help keep Britain in the EU. Mr Cameron as promised a referendum on the European question in 2017 should his party return to power.

In a reply to his letter, assistant private secretary at Downing Street, Iain Forbes forwarded the Premier’s thanks for the correspondence but told the campaigner: “The Government will keep the 12-year time limit under consideration but it is not minded to change the law at present.”

POWER Labour remains tight-lipped over issue, while the Liberal Democrats this spring produced a Power to the People policy paper. It called for talks on having overseas constituencies to represent expats – using France’s model for her citizens – but a spokesman said it would not legislate on changes to the time limit before the election “given the difficulty of getting any controversial legislation on voting arrangements through.”

Harry, who landed with the allies at Anzio in Italy during the Second World War and has lived in the Mediterranean country for years, said: “Many of the chaps affected by this are ex-servicemen like me who will be 100-yearsold by the time the next election comes round in 2020.

It’s a bit farcical. If you have accepted the principle, then do something now – you have 7 months to do it.”

Last week former Tory MP Douglas Carswell won the Clacton by-election for UKIP – a party that came a close second to Labour in the Heywood and Middleton by-election.

Harry added: With the recent by-election results, the main political parties must be concerned with the outcome of the general election. They could do with all the votes they can get.”

No referendum for Cataluña

by Jan Gamm CATALUÑA PRESIDENT Artur Mas has been forced to admit that due to certain criteria and deadlines not being met he cannot hold a referendum for independence in the region on the 9th November in its original format.

However, he has made a statement declaring that a poll will still be organised on the 9th with ballot boxes and voting papers. He said:

“The real adversary is not in Cataluña. The real and powerful adversary is the Spanish State, which has done everything possible to deny us the possibility to vote and consult with the people on our political future.”

Justice Minister Rafael Catala said that if the President of the Generalitat again organises an independence consultation outside of his competences, the State Attorney will move to stop it in the name of the Government.

THE US has requested the use of two of Spain’s air bases, Morón de la Frontera and Rota in Andalusia, to be used as stopover points for military aircraft returning from Ebola-stricken Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Strict protocols over the use of the bases are presently under discussion between Spanish military and health

officials and the Pentagon. There have been 8,914 cases of Ebola diagnosed in total: the World Health Organisation predicts that number will quickly reach 10,000. Some 100 people in Spain are being monitored for symptoms after coming into contact with Spanish nurse Teresa Romero while she was a contamination risk.

The rain in Spain IT IS Raining in this part of Spain and I love it, especially after the scorching heat of the summer months. It reminds me of when I was a child. As children we would sing a little song, ‘It’s raining, it’s pouring, the old man is snoring...’

As a child I remember having to have a nap. The sound of the rain would put me to sleep, which as a child I thought was a terrible bore. As a child I never understood the merits of that song but now that I am an old man, I dearly love to have a lay down, hear the rain, and have a snore.

I love the sound of the rain as opposed to hearing ceramic tiles being cut with a horrible, high-pitched noise.

You can be sure some will be moaning about the rain, but they moan when it is scorching hot in the summer. Some moan if it is too hot; some moan if it rains; some moan about anything…

Our neighbour just came for two weeks from England and it seems he brought British weather with him. He is leaving in a few days so the rain might leave as well…oh well, we can enjoy the rain while it lasts.

Leave a message Opening Day for RE: SUE EDWARDS’ letter about finding a wallet, I too found a wallet a couple of months ago: it contained a Belgium ID and two SIM cards. I put the cards in my phone and called all the contacts on the cards to ask them to pass a message to the owner and I also contacted the Belgium Consulate to tell them I would deposit the wallet at a particular National Police station, with whom I have a long working relationship.

(Normally property found must be handed to the Policia Local).

A few days later the loser, who had contacted his consulate, called me and said he had asked at the police station but they did not have the wallet. I went to the station and after a long exchange convinced them I had handed it in and they eventually found it. Had I not been so insistent the wallet would not have been returned.

The moral is, if you find important paperwork of a foreigner such as ID, passport etc., leave a message at their consulate.

YOUR LETTER of the week in issue 782 was very good and interesting. It is refreshing to read a positive letter where someone expressed appreciation for the artwork of your cartoonist Carter McKeague.

The letter was interesting because I too have a keen interest in art. I have noticed these cartoons for more than four years in RTN and being an inquisitive sort would be most interested to read a story about the artist.

Second Homes show tourism potential A NEW study released by the Chamber of Commerce of Murcia highlights the possibility of using empty second homes to satisfy tourism demand.

by Keith Nicol In Murcia alone, the Region has 261,000 empty homes and of these, 132,000 empty second homes exist that could become potential homes for tourist use.

The new study looked at the communities of Valencia, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. The report, which was conducted by a team of professors from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Murcia, is titled ‘residential tourism in the Spanish Mediterranean economic space’ and reveals that the region is preferred by the British and Irish residents who come to spend time in more than six months in Murcia, while in Catalonia and Balearic Islands, this falls to four months on average. The study led by Professor Department of Marketing and Market Research UMU Salvador Ruiz de Maya tries to establish strategies to output the park second and empty homes that may have a potential tourist use, in order to convert the residential tourism “as one of the engines of recovery.”

According to the latest census by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the number of empty homes has increased

by 35.1% between 2001 and 2011, when it was last revised. The number of homes listed as primary residences has grown almost in the same proportion, 36.3%.

Meanwhile, second homes has increased by 18.7%, the highest percentage of the four regions analyzed in the study, although the province of Castellon is much higher, with 26.7%, while the mean average throughout Spain is 9.5%.

Among the top 50 tourist towns Barcelona comes top with 127,028 dwellings for potential tourist use, followed

Foiled by an off-duty cop AN OFF-DUTY police officer nabbed a burglar in the act of robbing a private residence in the Desert Palms area of Castellon in the early hours of Sunday morning. The agent called 091 after spotting a man allegedly scaling the façade of a building with the help of two accomplices. The three men were arrested and charged with attempted burglary.

New Rugby Club DS Barbarians

RUGBY UNION continues to grow in popularity around Spain with more and more players discovering that other form of football, played with the odd shaped ball.

by Keith Nicol The newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca is called DS Barbarians RFC. The club has been set up based on the old traditional ethics of rugby, getting away from the political problems and old boys networks associated with many of Spain’s football and rugby clubs at all levels.

The club welcomes everyone regardless of gender, nationality, age or size. All are welcome and plenty of kids and ladies have already signed up to start training. The Club’s

values are based on ‘respect’ as well as a family community and they welcome you to become part of this great family atmosphere.

At the moment they have over 40 people wanting to play and train but the one ‘slight’ problem they need to overcome is that they have not been able to find a pitch, due to being already let down twice. The players range from 6 year olds to vets and have a good mixture of nationalities to make it a true Barbarian type of club.

So if anybody can help the Barbarians to find a ground where they can train and

play matches in or around the San Miguel area, please let them know.

Tonight, Friday, the Barbarians are holding a meeting at the PocoLoco Bar in Cabo Roig at 8.00pm to get all the members and prospective members together to discuss the next step forward so that they can start training as soon as possible. Interest has already been shown from UK teams wanting to come over next year to play them. Everybody is welcome to tonight’s meetings, so come along and help out and support the DS Barbarians. Alonso to leave Ferrari

FERRARI EX-PRESIDENT Luca di Montezemolo has stated publicly on Italian TV that two-time F1 world champion Fernando Alonso is to leave Scuderia Ferrari at the end of the year. The Spaniard is in his fifth season with the team but has been clearly unhappy for some time at the team’s “under achievement” during their time together. Alonso took the world title twice with Renault in 2005 and 2006, finishing runner-up in the World Championship three times with Ferrari. His departure from the team leaves a vacancy for German Sebastian Vettel following the news that he was to leave Red Bull Racing. Alonso, meanwhile, is tipped for McLaren despite his turbulent relationship with CEO Ron Dennis.

THE TOWN of Alfaz del Pi held a ´Day of Sport´ at the sports centre last Sunday. 1,500 people attended the event – which was a celebration of all the different sporting activities which are held in the town. The Mayor Vicente Arques and Councillor for Sport Oscar Perez congratulated all the schools and clubs that had organized 30 different events and activities for everyone to try. The first and very popular event, which started at 10am was a cycle route – with many parents accompanying children then at 1:00pm there was an award ceremony, followed by sporting demonstrations on the stage by different clubs.

Diamond Wedding celebrations for FAST NEL AND Brian Riley recently contacted FAST, to request a Collecting Tin with the idea of raising money whilst celebrating a very special occasion; their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. Along with 5 0 guests, the couple returned to the venue where they had celebrated their Golden Anniversary a decade earlier at Mariano’s Restaurant with family and friends. Not one person in the restaurant that didn’t know them could guess that the couple were celebrataing their 60 years together as neither look their age with Nel being 84 and Brian, 81 years old. Both are very content living in Spain an said “We have no wishes to move anywhere else, being very happy here,” having lived on Camposol for 14 years.

Brian and Nel have many relatives in different parts of the world so have enjoyed celebrating already during this year with relatives on several different occasions. Kerry, their daughter and others came over to join them again so they could enjoy another celebration together. They were all thrilled when hearing that a total of 142€ had been collected during the party.

Tax-free death benefits or not?

THE UK Chancellor has recently announced that from April 2015 individuals will have the freedom to pass on their unused defined contribution (money purchase) pension to any nominated beneficiary when they die, rather than paying the 55% tax charge which currently applies to pensions passed on at death.

From next year, individuals with a drawdown arrangement or with uncrystallised (where no benefits have been taken) pension funds will be able to nominate a beneficiary to pass their pension to if they die.

If the individual dies before they reach the age of 75, they will be able to give their remaining fund to anyone as a lump sum completely tax free.

The person receiving the pension will pay no tax on the money they withdraw from that pension, whether it is taken as a single lump sum, or accessed through drawdown.

As always, there is a sting in the tail - anyone who dies with a drawdown arrangement or with uncrystallised pension funds at or over the age of 75 will also be able to nominate a beneficiary to pass their pension to. The beneficiary will be able to access the pension funds flexibly, at any age, and pay tax at their marginal rate of income tax.

There are no restrictions on how much of the pension fund the beneficiary can withdraw at any one time. There will also be an option to

receive the pension as a lump sum payment, subject to a tax charge of 45%. It is likely that in 2016/17, the 45% tax charge will likely be cut to a beneficiary’s marginal rate should a lump sum be taken, which is the more likely approach upon death of the member. The initial tax-free pension commencement lump sum (usually 25% of an individual’s pot) will continue to be available.

The QROPS product remains unaffected as yet, continuing to allow: Income paid gross; opt out of the UK arena; 100% death benefit to beneficiary with no age restriction; local face-toface advice (i.e. Spain); facility to change beneficiaries; multi-currency available.

It remains very likely that Final Salary Occupational Schemes, particularly unfunded public sector schemes such as Teachers, NHS, Police and Fire Service, will cease to offer a Transfer Value from April 2015 and we continue to urge preserved members (those who have not taken any benefits) of such schemes to come forward for a free consultation to examine their options, but time is running out.

These types are schemes are very expensive to administer with the promise

Forging new ideas

by Jack Troughton BLACKSMITH TURNED artist, Alejandro Cremades creates ironwork with a wonderful sense of humour in his workshop he has named ‘iron and fire’ – or ‘hierro y fuego’.

Visitors to the Foundation Klein-Schreuder Sculpture Garden on the outskirts of Alfaz del Pi will meet a ‘beetle’ shepherd and his flock of snails made in his Onil Smithy. There are also a selection of decorative and popular ‘windmills’ – delightful mobiles in the forms of ships, birds, fish and jellyfish on show. He also makes stylish gates, fences and railings.

Johanna Klein-Schreuder said: “His technique is very difficult because there is less opportunity for detail when making sculptures in iron and it is harder work than modelling in wax and then casting in iron or bronze.

“But he uses all his skills as a blacksmith – he trained as a blacksmith but turned to be a sculptor.” Alejandro is helped at the forge by his wife Brenda – and both have endured months of hot weather this summer as they continue to produce work.

“All the figures are created in the smithy – they are very strong and durable,” added Johanna. “And they are very affordable, a snail or a frog is just 60€. They are all selling well and he keeps bringing more.”

The exhibition will be on show until the end of November and visitors also have the opportunity to see the artwork permanently situated in the gardens.

The park is open to the public on Sundays from 10.00 to 14.00 hours and the entrance fee is 3€ per person. Groups are also welcome on week days by prior appointment only.

Bale to play Steve Jobs CHRISTIAN BALE is the new hot favourite for the role of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in a biopic scheduled for shooting in the spring of 2015. The role was originally offered to Titanic and Inception star Leonardo di Caprio who declined the job due to his decision to take a break from acting. The movie will be directed by Danny Boyle, penned by scriptwriter Aaron Sorkin who wrote The Social Network and also The West Wing. It will feature three major product launches by Jobs including that of the iPod in 2001. Bale, known for his performances as Batman and also Moses, earned an Oscar for his supporting role as Dicky Eklund in The Fighter. He sees the role as Steve Jobs as one of the greatest challenges of his career. The movie is yet to be given a title.

Whale watching in Mazarrón TWENTY YOUNSTERS from Mazarrón enjoyed a day whale watching last week.

by Keith Nicol The event, organized by the Department of Youth, received rave reviews from all those who participated and organisers acknowledged that the event will be scheduled in coming years.

The activity was carried out over two successive days. A marine biologist led the expedition to help publicise the vast variety of fish and cetaceans that live along the Mediterranean shores.

The youths also had the opportunity to watch the whales and striped dolphins and received an interesting and informative explanation.

One of the main objectives of the activity is to convey respect for the marine environment and the importance of conserving it. The activity took place in the calm waters in a creek near Cape Tiñoso.

On their return journey, the expedition also enjoyed seeing the majestic scenery along the beaches and cliffs of the bay.

Film Battles revived in Murcia

By Keith Nicol THIS WEEKEND the City Centre of Murcia will host the sixth re-enactment of famous battles, as seen in the movies.

There are a full three days of events, on the 17th, 18th and 19th October with mock battles in the area around the Gardens of Malecon. Today at 4pm camps of the Spanish Armed Forces will be set up followed by a parade of participants and vehicles at 5.00pm. The main action happens on Saturday starting with another parade at 11.30am and the official opening ceremony at 1.00pm. with another parade at 6.30pm. The first ‘battle’ takes place at 7.30pm and lasts for about an hour.

On Sunday at 11.00am there is an offering for a “Memorial for Peace” followed at 11:30am with another Parade through the city centre and at noon an even larger parade of veterans and vehicles from the Spanish and foreign forces. This is followed at 1.00pm with a recreation of a historic battle and at 2.00pm there is an exhibition by the Spanish Armed Forces, with a closing ceremony at 2.30pm. Walk with Lions for a great cause THE LIONS and Leos are going to walk 6km to raise funds for children with Diabetes to go to a special camp where they will learn how to cope with their illness. 2014 Poppy Appeal launched in Torrevieja

by Keith Nicol THE 2014 Poppy Appeal was officially launched on the Costa Blanca, in Torrevieja on Wednesday. At 11am, Torrevieja Pipes and Drums led Standards of the Royal British Legion and other former service associations from the UK, Spain and the Netherlands, on a short Parade along Torrevieja’s seafront with hundreds of representatives from former service personnel, two Chelsea Pensioners and representatives from Torrevieja’s Town Hall.

On a special stage set up in the shadow of the Old Man of the Sea on Paseo Juan Aparico, Nigel Hails, Chairman of The Royal British Legion in Spain, District North, Torre-

vieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon, British Vice Consul Lloyd Milen, Robin Hargrave, District Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator and Rosario Martinez, Councillor for Foreigners, all said a few words of welcome and reminded those present of the work carried out by The RBL. This year is a special year as it commemorates the start of WWI, which at the time, everyone thought was the war to end all wars. Robin Hargrave, the District Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator said; “We must remember that every centimo we receive is used towards the welfare of serving and ex-service men and women and their families who find themselves in great need. As our veterans can now be as young as 18, the Legion

is there to support them for the rest of their life. Spending as it did last year, £250,000 every day, shows our total commitment to those who have served their country but may need our help in the future. Be it something as small as a hearing aid or as large as a chair lift, these things can help change a veteran’s life, and we are all here to help.”

After the speeches, Torrevieja’s Pipes and Drums marched the Standards and associations from the area, The 2014 before heading to Real Club Nautico Poppy Torrevieja for a special fundraising Appeal was officially launch lunch. It is also hoped people will once again wear a poppy with pride and give generously to help the Charity’s continuing welfare work. The Legion spends £200,000 a day assisting Armed Forces personnel and their families.

Boxes of crimson poppies have already been delivered to businesses throughout the area for the annual Poppy Appeal and by making a donation for a poppy; people

are supporting those who dedicated their lives to serving their country. The district’s Welfare coordinator can be contacted on 676 451 780.

And for over 90 years, the Poppy Factory in Richmond, Surrey – which provides employment for many disabled people - has been making poppies, crosses and wreaths for the Royal Family and the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal.

Whispers help the Food Bank THE EVER popular ‘Whispers’, a nook bar in Calle Gran Vía, Urbanization Balcón de la Costa Blanca, has raised 310€ for San Miguel’s Food Bank, from a raffle and Ice Bucket challenge.

Sue Thorne, the owner, in pink, told us that a number of her regular customers donate food via the collection point at Mas y Mas Supermarket but they thought a cash donation would enable the Food Bank to hand out some extras, like toiletries and some fresh produce. Sue, who took a very wet ‘hit’ for team Whispers, said, “I must have been mad but it was a lot of fun and we know our efforts are going to a great local cause.”

Unión Musical Torrevejense

by Keith Nicol EACH EASTER 100 strong and dedicated men, take it upon themselves to carry a Semana Santa Throne, through the streets of Torrevieja. This unique band of men, Los Costaleros de la Cofradía del Huerto de los Olivos, were honoured on Saturday night by two very different bands, in homage to their ten years of service to the local brotherhoods.

In front of a theatre filled to capacity, the UMT, Unión Musical Torrevejense and the JB / Just Brass Band entertained the audience with varied selection of music. The show was pre-

sented by Encarna Hernandez with the Director of the Foreign Residents Office, Jean Paul Mulero on hand to translate proceedings.

The evening began with Unión Musical Torrevejense under the baton of Jaime Belda Cantavella, playing the Carmen Overture by Bizet and enthralling the audience with their presentation and playing. The Just Brass Band, directed by Dr. Ian Tinsley took the stage and quickly won over the Spanish members of the audience, most of whom had never heard a silver or brass band perform.

Unión Musical Torrevejense have

been playing for Los Costaleros since their inception and four years ago a special tune was composed to accompany their parading through the streets.

The concert concluded with both bands joining together for a spectacular finish, with many theatre goers asking if the bands would be continuing to perform together, such was the excellence of music on display. Both bands were presented with memorial plaques of the evening with ‘honorary membership’ of Los Costaleros being awarded to all the members of the Unión Musical Torrevejense, in gratitude of all their support over the last decade.

Diabetic Support Group FOR A number of years the Help Association Diabetic Support Group has successfully provided support and advice for those who have recently been diagnosed with Diabetes, as well as for people who have learnt to live with this condition.

The aim of this group is to: Provide up-to-date information concerning medical and practical developments in the management of diabetes; to use guest speakers to provide information on a variety of subjects of interest to attendees and have a lively exchange of information between anyone attending.

The group meets on the last Wednesday of every month at 11.00am at Casa Tom Avenida Jaca 31 . Urb. San Luis.

Torrevieja, and is partially funded by the Help Association Vega Baja so is free of any annual fees. A small admission charge of 1.50€ is made which includes tea, coffee or water.

More filming in Benidorm

The cameras rolled into Benidorm again – but only for a matter of hours this time. The resort was one of several locations used to make a pilot for a new TV show called ´The Middle Aged Road Trip” featuring Dan & Dan.

by Irena Bodnarec Cameras follow the two Dans – Dan Carey and Dan Coll, as they travel from the UK to Gibraltar in a 1960´s Land Rover – kindly donated (and insured) by Mark Griffiths of the Land Rover Centre in Huddersfield with no money over ten days!

Along the way the pair are assisted by a number of celebrities who help to fundraise and blag freebies to finance the trip – but the main purpose of the adventure is to raise money for The Samaritans. Dan Coll has great respect for the organisation, having suffered from depression and benefited from their services and it is his way of giving back, saying thanks and raising the profile of the charity.

Along the way the pair have been met by a number of celebrities including Patrick “Paddy” Doherty – winner of Celebrity Big Brother 8 and My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding fame; actor Dean Sullivan, who played Jimmy Corkhill in Brookside; Cheryl Fergison, most notably remembered as Heather in EastEnders; presenter Peter Purves; Victoria Aitken – London based singer songwriter and here in Benidorm the pair were greeted by singer and performer Asa Elliott.

Dan & Dan turned up in Sandra´s Bar at 11.30pm on Monday in the middle of Asa´s performance and he managed to collect 154.16€ and 22GBP from the audience. The following morning, before heading off on the final leg of their epic journey to Gibraltar they stopped by Simply Delicious – Benidorm´s answer to Greggs, where manager Karen kindly fed them with delicious freshly made bacon, sausage and eggs baps, copious amounts of coffee and even sent them off with a packed lunch – all FREE of charge!

The Land Rover headed off down the AP7 and was due to make Malaga on Tuesday evening, to be met by Frankie Cocozza of X-Factor fame where unbeknown to him, the threesome would be doing some busking on the streets. Then the adventure ended on Wednesday night as the Dan´s arrived at their final destination – Gibraltar. There Kevin Kennedy, remembered by most as Curly Watts in Coronation Street, welcomed them and they all performed a closing night show at the prestigious John Mackintosh Theatre.

the editing process, after which they will approach the television companies and hopefully get the green light to repeat the process again next year. However, this time the objective will be to solely raise as much money for The Samaritans as possible.

The planned half hour programs will primarily focus on the celebrities who help the pair along the route and they intend on spending a few days rather than hours in Benidorm next time. Retirement gardening for pleasure and health

GARDENING REMAINS a major retirement activity in Spain although our surveys suggest that more women than men actively garden on a regular basis. This is a pity as gardening offers interesting mental and physical activity in touch with and managing nature.

In spite of the amazing achievements of technology over the past century a garden designed developed and nurtured over ten or twenty years is probably one of the most complex, challenging and continuous projects one can undertake in retirement and even in a lifetime. But many do it because the results are very visible satisfying and self-fulfilling and doing it in partnership with a spouse can rebuild relationships that declined during busy working lives.

Gardening can be practiced even into one’s nineties for active gardens can be reduced in size and enviable mini gardens can be created even on apartment terraces and balconies as described in ‘Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style’.

Some of the other reasons retirement gardening is popular are: It can be practiced in gardens and allotments, in patios and courtyards, and on apartment terraces balconies and window sills. Yes even on window sills where we have seen interesting succulent collections, mini strawberry beds and trays of cut-and-cut-again salad leaf collections. On an even smaller scale one can try drain pipe gardening with plants in painted beer cans fixed to the pipe.

Having a garden to potter around in can help the transition from paid work to retirement as it has different

Moving to the south of Europe allows one to enjoy gardening and gardens on many more days of the year than in the UK and other northerly countries and also allows one to experiment with a new range of flowering plants, fruits, herbs and vegetables.

With just a few hours a week it is perfectly possible to become very self sufficient in ecologically grown herbs vegetables and fruit, even on a mini-scale.

As one becomes infirm it is possible to work sitting down by gardening in tall containers and on specially constructed growing tables. The latter are great for building up interesting collections of small plants and small salad varieties.

If one surrounds a growing table with eight to ten builders’ buckets in the form of a ten-tub veggie plot as

launched in our book ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ an amazing diversity of vegetables can be grown.

Shade from a large umbrella can enable many crops to be grown even during the hottest months.

Working in the garden, especially in the winter sun, helps build and maintain one’s natural vitamin D production as well as exercising limbs. But do use trees to add shade for yourself and pets with shade seats at various points of the garden to rest, read and enjoy the vistas and perfumes of the garden. We have six seats strategically placed for use at various times of the day and seasons of the year.

Egg laying hens can be very friendly and interesting pets if purchased young and regularly handled and their bedding is a good addition to compost heaps.

For those who still like competing in competitions for the best flower arrangement, group of roses, fruit or vegetables, most interesting newly propagated dry garden plants, best plant photograph etc at monthly garden clubs can be very motivating. It is a pity that not all gardening clubs recognise the interest and self fulfilment that such activities can stimulate.

If you are to continue gardening to a ripe age do ensure that the garden is safe. Do reduce the chance of slips, trips, sprains, cuts and spiking. Economically designed tools such as the Fiskars range are well worth the extra cost. Also ensure that terraces and garden walls are safe, that trees are not getting top heavy and liable to fall or the snapping of branches in high winds, that low branches cannot cause head injuries and that garden electric circuits are safe etc..

IT IS foreseen that together with other tax changes for 2015, Capital Gains Tax in Spain on the sale of real estate properties, will change.

The Capital Gain, as we have noted in previous articles, is the difference between the transfer value (price obtained from the sale, less the inherent costs, such as notary fees, municipal gains ( Plusvalía), etc.) minus the acquisition value (price paid at the time of purchase, plus its inherent expenses, such as notary fees, property registration, stamp duty or VAT as appropriate, etc.).

Today, when it comes to pay Spanish Capital Gains Tax, we must take into account a number of factors: Firstly, the conversion factor or updating coefficient. That means, according to the

year in which the property was acquired, the purchase price will be revised and updated, by multiplying it by a coefficient, which is set each year by the General State Budget Act, with the aim of correcting inflation.

Secondly, if the property was acquired before 1995, reducing or abatement coefficients apply. Although we will not explain how they work, as we already have done in a previous article, the reduction coefficients represent a very significant saving in the tax payable by capital gains from the sale of such older real estate.

It could mean a reduction in a proportion of the gain (the gain generated from acquisition to the year 2006), of 11.11% for each year before 1995.

However, for 2015, the aim is to make these two update and reducing coefficients disappear, to make citizens

pay CGT on the difference between the transfer and acquisition value, regardless of the acquisition date of the property, or inflation, etc.

To give a rough example, let’s say you bought in 1970 a property for 500,000 pesetas (3,000 €) and today you sell it for € 200,000. If you are taxed under current law, you would pay approximately 8500 € capital gains tax, but if said coefficients are removed, in 2015 you would pay approximately 46,000 €, a very significant difference.

Personally, I understand that we have to wait and see what is the final text of the tax changes to be adopted, but if all goes through as above, it will generate more legal uncertainty, and could actually be an illegal change, as it affects the rights acquired by taxpayers over years.

ANOTHER FULL house attended Quesada Fish and Chips in Villamartin Plaza on 9th October to receive their free information on Living In Spain.

Come and join us AFPO (ASSOCIATION of Foreign Property Owners) Calpe, a voluntary interpreting service, has been operating successfully since 2006 and consists of a team of volunteers who provide the service at Calpe Centro de Salud Monday to Friday from 9am – 12noon.

All the volunteers speak English and Spanish and some have other languages too.

Our assistance can be in the form of answering questions, helping with the paperwork associated with the Health Service or accompanying a patient for a doctor’s consultation.

The high level of appreciation experienced by those who use the service is evident by the number of glowing remarks in our Comments Book.

We are always looking for new recruits. If you like helping others, have a bit of spare time and are English and Spanish speaking why not consider becoming involved in this very rewarding voluntary work.

Charity Fun Day with PCN A CHARITY Fun Day is to take place at ‘The Emerald Isle’ in La Florida on Wednesday 22nd October to raise funds for the Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity.

PCN works to provide professional nursing care to terminal prognosis patients in their own home, as well as much-needed support to their loved ones. The charity operates in a similar way to the Macmillan Nurses in the UK and any assistance given is funded entirely through fundraising efforts and voluntary donations.

The fun will commence at 12 noon with a warm welcome from popular compere Dave C who will keep the entertainment flowing throughout the afternoon. He will be joined by some of the Costa’s most talented vocalists and entertainers, including Nikki G, Paul Michael, Richie Alexander, Cindy, Joanna Wells and Dan Davy.

A variety of stalls will be set up, as well as a charity raffle. A Barbeque will also continue throughout the afternoon.

I see increasingly more and more Old Souls, especially as clients find their way into my office. Many do not know that they have lived before, or even believe it to be possible, but it surely is. I am an Old Soul myself. Looking back for me sometimes takes me way back when, and it is always a journey that I am happy to make, as with all other Old Souls, because it is a part of us.

My first ever connection with the past was in Primary School and I was in project mode at the tender age of eight, spurred on my Mr. Holloway who made learning fun for me at the time. I embarked on a project of Ancient Egypt armed only with a black and white edition of the Arthur Mee’s Childrens’ Encyclopedia.

It offered glimpses of Abu Simbel and Karnak as well as other Temples along the Nile. It dabbled at hieroglyphics, exposed Mummies and Canopic jars......and it all just seemed so right. It was as if I had actually been there, and I discovered that indeed I had been. I just knew too much, answered my own questions, and my great enthusiasm brought every page alive and me the class prize for the best Project. It was the Observers book of Egypt!

Skipping forward and my next period of time was in the Tudor Court under the auspices of Henry the Eighth. The characters here really started to come alive to me, initially in long dreams, and I once terrified my poor Mother by reeling off a list of dates and times and people who were present or absent from the Palace, with or without their heads. It wasn’t an obsession of mine, but just like opening a book I was able to fully understand on a level that study could not have brought me. This was proven by a visit to the Spiritualist Association of Great Britain in Belgrave Square where an aghast Medium witnessed my regression into Square where an aghast Medium witnessed my regression into doublet and hose with a sword at my side, one sunny afternoon!

only have to look at a mountain to see that it has witnessed so very much over the years, and will survive to see more than each and every one of us ever will. The love of crystals is a trip back into the natural energies of the World as it once was, as they serve to be a reminiscence of what was, just as well as heralding what will be in the future when they are inherited by new owners in time and space. Nothing takes people back more readily that objects that they revere in the present, because the key to their enjoyment could easily come from a previous knowledge. I once had a wonderful book of ancient objects, each numbered and lettered. The object of this very special book was to ask those who read it to make a list of whatever objects took their eye. I scanned pages of footstools and selected the code for my favourites, then a table and chairs, a jug, a mirror, and so on. I was as sure as hell that each of my objects would prove to be Egyptian, but having searched the index it revealed to me that each and every object of my greatest desire was Sumerian!

It took me back a further few thousand years, and when I found a gallery of Sumerian Art in MOMA New York I was transfixed, and an eerie feeling set my adrenaline pitch up to fever with a cold sweat. I knew that I had been there. I belonged. I did.

Look around your home. Look at each chosen object you revere and ask yourself where did it come from? Why do I like it? What does it mean to me. All across the ages comes that feeling that ownership of time tells us just where we were, if not where we are going. Vintage clothing looks so right on people who once wore it before, just as antique jewellery reveals ancient stones and vintage cars are an acquired taste. Old Souls love antiquities and often balance the old and the new in their chosen domestic decor.

The past is over, and we cannot live there, neither can we inhabit the future either for that matter, but many of us are a part of the past, and we learn more and more from being open to experiences and sharing each our individual energies of life. I embrace all my lives, revealed or not, and I am open to further suggestions that I may consolidate that which I know, and learn more about that which is yet to be opened up to me. My soul inhabits my body at present but one day I will continue my journey come what may, and who know where?

showbiz goss Celebrity Clips TV CHEF Tom Kerridge has kind of spilled the beans on telly cookery shows by saying of long-running BBC show ‘Saturday Kitchen’, “It’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Everyone eats and pretends it’s really nice. You don’t say, ‘James, no mate, this is wrong.’” That’s bean spilling in my book!

Kerridge did try to clarify things by saying that preparing good food on a live show is nigh on impossible, but not very convincingly though!

NORMALLY YOU don’t hear about behind the scenes stuff in the music business, but James Blunt changed that when speaking to Guilty Pleasures. He admitted, “Over the years I’ve always invited undiscovered talent to audition to become my support acts.” Then when it was suggested TV talent shows might be a source he said “X Factor competitions are not really about the music, I’m looking for something a lot more genuine!”

I’D IMAGINE having been in a glamourous TV show like Baywatch then father time kicking in can’t be an easy thing to deal with. However, Nicole Eggert, who played ‘Summer Quinn’ in the show for two years in the 90s, made the switch in quite spectacular fashion by swopping running along a beach half naked to a life selling ice cream from her Scoops van ...

Not a sweet lump of sugar in sight!

ALAN SUGAR, back in 1963 at the age of just 16, was a regular Del Boy selling car aerials and electrical goods around the streets of East London out of a van he bought for 50 quid. He is now of course Sir Alan Sugar, and, in the age old tradition of a Knight of the Realm, sits in his high chair lording over the comings and goings of telly show The Apprentice.

I guess you’ve got the drift that I am not a fan of the programme, and this comes from when I first saw the show in 2005 and was stunned at the way he spoke to the young bright eyed hopefuls trying to get themselves a start in the world of business.

Because of his unusually thick curly hair Alan was nicknamed ‘Mop Head’ as a lad, and I am reliably informed still answers to it, but only amongst his close family and friends don’t you know. I include this rather odd tale as wouldn’t it be fantastic if, after a tirade of abuse and Sugar uttering those immortal words, “YOU’RE FIRED!” the losing contender says as they walk out the door “Thanks for nothing Mop Head!”

Sugar and Luisa Zissman, who was runner up last year, have been locking horns over the last week or three, and to Sir Alan’s verbal volley “former participants would go to the opening of an envelope in their bid for post-show fame,” Louisa replied “Sugar can’t bear the fact that some ex Apprentice nonwinners are more successful than the actual winners… Ego won’t allow it!”

Sir Alan Sugar is clearly a superlative talent in the world of business, but it must have been a brutally hard and long climb to the top for him to see it as okay to have become such an imperious bully.

JEREMY CLARKSON is a man who not only acts like a child with his machismo antics on Top Gear, but is now treating us like children. Let me explain. The ‘Anger in Argentina’ is majorly ancient news now of course, but personally I continue to refuse to run with his claim that the car number plate H982 FKL was ‘just a coincidence’... got him thrown out the country it did … clown!

Lots to plan for in Torrevieja

By Keith Nicol IF YOU are on the lookout for things to do, places to see, concerts and parades, there are a number of dates that might be worthy of your diary for the remainder of October. Tonight, 17th October at 7pm in the Municipal Theatre, the Pride of Spain Awards take place, this year organised by the Torrevieja branch of Lions Club International. Admission is only 6€ including a mix of entertainment and awards to locals who have all done their bit for the community.

On Sunday 19th, at 12 noon, a very special concert takes place: Gran Concierto de Gala Benefico. It’s another chance to see one of Torrevieja’s very best bands, fresh from their sold out success on behalf of Los Coistaleros last Saturday, the talented Unión Musical Torrevejense are back on the stage of the Teatro Municipal with admission just 5€.

On Saturday 25th October, a truly international affair takes place. British tenor Derek Frances has gathered a few of his talented friends to put on a concert in the Palacio de la Musica at 8pm with admission of 5€. The show

Children’s charities ball

A CHARITY ball is to be held at Principe de Asturias restaurant, Santiago de la Ribera on Friday 7th November.

Entertainment will be provided by the King of Soul Richie Alexander and Spanish vocalist Mano Sanchez and a delicious four course meal is included in the 18€ ticket price.

Proceeds from the evening will go to the registered charities Aidemar, which supports children with disabilities and Afacmur, supporting children with cancer.

Help for Heroes Fun Day Derek Francis

For something a little different and not seen before this year in the City of

Salt, we have a group of Welsh Dances and Musicians performing on 29th October. This is a benefit concert for AFA Torrevieja, the Alzheimer’s Charity, and takes place in the Palacio de la Musica for the price of 5€.

It’s time for trick and treating at the end of the month as on Friday 31st October, there is the second Halloween Parade starting in the main square, the Plaza de la Constitucion at 9pm. Last year we had a flash mob performance of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, and news of this year’s special parade should be announced next week.

ANOTHER VERY popular Help for Heroes Fun Day is being held on 25th October in Calle Maestro Torralba, La Zenia. The road is being closed off outside Flying Farmer, Open all Hours, Easyads, The Randy Leprechaun, Bar Molino, Wishing Well, Dog & Bone and Easy Horse Care.

A parade led by the Torrevieja Pipes & Drums with The Royal British Legion will leave Consum car park at 12 noon, marching down to c/Maestro Torralba where throughout the afternoon there will be entertainment with Davy Jones, TAABS, Celena Deans, Richie Alexander, Ali J., Dan Davy and Paul Michael, hosted by Sunshine FM. There will be stalls; Tombola; a raffle with some great prizes; a bouncy castle; face painting and a display of classic cars.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Open questions in third person Keeping in mind the pearls of wisdom we learnt in the last article (pause while you scrabble about for last week’s newspaper) we will now complete our look at open and closed questions. We have got as far as seeing that an open question begins with a question word, or group of words forming a question, for example: “Dónde”, “Cuándo”, “Por qué”, “De qué color” and many more. We then saw that this was followed by a verb. So we have: “¿Cuántos hijos tienes?” (How many children have you got?) “Cuántos hijos” is the question and “tienes” is the verb. “¿Qué estás haciendo?” (What are you doing?) Here “Qué” is the question, and “estás haciendo” together form the verb, and these two verb words do not separate. “¿Dónde estás?” (Where are you?) “Dónde” is the question and “estás” is the verb.

These are all questions in the second person or “you” form, even though we haven’t inserted the word “you” into the sentence. If we were to do so, the questions would be: “¿Cuántos hijos tienes tú?”, “¿Qué estás haciendo tú?”, “¿Dónde estás tú?” As we have said many times before the “tú” is not necessary to make ourselves clear, but

we can use it if we want to. The reason I mention it now though, is to indicate the word order of an open question, which is Question + verb + subject.

So, we will now apply this principle to questions about a third person, that is, a “he” a “she” or even an “it”. To go from “How many children have you got?” to “How many children has Pedro got?”, we follow the same word order, which gives us: “¿Cúantos hijos tiene Pedro?”

(Question + verb + subject). “¿Qué estás haciendo?” (What are you doing?) “¿Qué está haciendo tu hijo?” (What is your son doing?) “¿Dónde estás?” (Where are you?) “¿Dónde está el ayuntamiento?”

(Where is the town hall?)

We can ask similar questions in the plural: “¿De qué color son las cortinas?”

(What colour are the curtains?)

Notice as well that prepositions go in front of question words to form part of the question. “¿De qué color … ? (literally “of what colour?”) is an example of this. Also “¿A qué hora?” (at what time) “¿Durante cuánto tiempo?” (for how long) “¿Con quién?” (with

APAH Fun Dog Show

By Keith Nicol ON SUNDAY, 9th November, APAH Animal Rescue Charity will be holding their annual Fun Dog Show at The Carpa Municipal, the large marquee, in Pilar de la Horadada Town Hall.

The Show starts at 12:30pm with the registration of dogs for the various classes. Registration closes at 1.30pm followed by the judging of the 12 classes.

Details of the various local businesses who have sponsored the classes are available on APAH’s Facebook site; ApahRescueSanPedro. Along with the judging of the classes, there will be stalls selling variety of things plus a Tombola and a prize draw from the sale of programmes.

Entrance fee is 10€ per dog and owner, with no limit to number of classes your pooch can enter. All dogs must be vaccinated and a certificate provided if required and dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.

It costs spectators just one euro entre with children under 12 free.

To find the venue by motorway, leave the AP7 at junction 770 for Pilar de la Horadada. At the roundabout with the big black bull, take the 2nd exit for Pilar. At the next roundabout full of palm trees, take the 2nd exit again. Carry on until you see the large white marquee.

From the N332, leave it at the exit for Alpuente DIY and Garden Centre. At the roundabout with Mercadona, turn right into calle Industries, and it is in front of you.

MOST PEOPLE are aware of the existence of flu vaccines now available, but many have not heard of Pneumococcal vaccine.

THE PNEUMOCOCCAL vaccine protects the lungs from infection by the pneumococcus bacterium (pneumonia). There are 80 types of these bacterium but most cases of pneumonia are caused by the 23 types which are included in the vaccine.

In the UK there are around 500,000 cases of pneumonia each year. When infection leads to bacterial meningitis or septicaemia, 20-30% will die.

The following groups are recommended to have the vaccine: All adults 65 years of age and older.

Volvo Ocean Race LAST WEEKEND saw the start of the round the world Volvo Ocean Race with around 50,000 spectators flocking to dockside to wish the sailors fair winds.

The seven-strong fleet of the 12th Volvo Ocean Race raced out of Alicante on Saturday for the punishing first leg to Cape Town with rains and strong winds forecast to greet them in the opening eight hours.

Team Brunel took the honours after the fleet bade farewell to a memorable Alicante nine-day stopover before heading out to the Mediterranean, through the Straits of Gibraltar and then into the Atlantic during the first week of a nine-month, 38,739-mile marathon.

Skippered by Bouwe Bekking, the Dutch boat headed the seven-strong fleet out of the Spanish coastal city which hosts the Race HQ and has given the 66 sailors competing in Leg 1 an incredible send-off with tens of thousands visiting the Race Village every day.

They were hotly pursued by both Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and MAPFRE. Memories of the last ‘salida’ (departure) from Alicante three years ago will still be fresh for many – Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and Team Sanya were forced to limp back to shore with crippling damage within 24 hours after an opening night storm in the Med wrought early havoc.

There’s no such carnage predicted this time but Race meteorologist Gonzalo Infante suggested it will be “messy” from about 10pm local time (2000 UTC) on the first leg when rains are likely to drench the fleet and winds could pick up to around 20 knots.

Traditionally, boats who have won Leg 1 have gone on to win the entire race but

Stefanie received four YES votes

A LOCAL Costa Blanca girl from Los Montesinos has been selected from 50,000 contenders to sing in the Jury auditions of the German ‘Got Talent’.

She sang ‘In the Arms of the Angel’ and received four YES votes and encouraging comments for her performance. After a long standing ovation Stefanie could not control her feelings any longer and burst into tears. She is now waiting to see if she made it into the last 10 for the Finals on 20th December.

We have mentioned previously about how modern technology is helping to advance the medical industry with all kinds of cool and wonderful inventions. Today we focus on a classic example of this by a company called Miroculus. The device is a 3D printed device that is said to be able to detect cancer and other diseases in just under an hour.

The device is an amazing piece of equipment and will no doubt change the lives of many people, helping to find cancer and other diseases at early stages. The device is a \”single, accurate, affordable and non-invasive microRNA detection platform in 3 steps \” and uses MicroRNA Profiling which can detect microRNAs without using expensive equipment, trapping them and changing color to green to show that they have been detected.

The whole process takes about 60 minutes to complete and uses state of the art technology on a connected smart phone to allow you to monitor results.

The smartphone application receives the data from the device and analyses them to see how the brightness and speed of the shine allowing the app to know whether microRNAs are present in the blood.

Data is stored in the cloud allowing the company to provide analytics that help you to keep track and visual trends over time.

Youtube app troubles HOLA AUNTY: I read your articles in RTN every week, they are very interesting. My problem is YouTube’ on my Panasonic Smart TV. When I load the app the page comes up and the list of videos comes up but when you click on one it does not load up! Message: ‘playback error’. This is a new fault as I have had no problems in the past with this app: Dave.

Aunty says: Investigations have found a number of people have also just recently started to get this error message on their Panasonic TV. The first suggestion that may solve the problem is to uninstall the app, and then reinstall the app. If that does not solve the problem, one person contacted Panasonic who said to “re-set the TV back to the shipping default setting,” which the person said “…seems to have done the trick.”

Response: Thank you for the reply: I re-set the TV to ‘shipping conditions’ and can now play YouTube videos on my smart TV.

Changing my homepage back to Google HELLO, AUNTY: Love your articles - what a service you provide! How do I return the Home Page Google? It seems to have changed to Ask which I didn’t choose and don’t want! Sue. Aunty says: Actually you probably did say to the PC to change the home page from Google to Ask - you just do not realise it. Most times, when you install software, there are various options during the install process. These default to whatever the software developer wants - and sometimes will install toolbars and other things by default. And some also change your homepage. Presumably Ask pay that software firm to change homepages if and when their software is installed.

Usually during installation there is always the ability to go to the ‘expert’ install, so you can review everything that will be installed and changed, rather than the default settings, which presumably changed your home page.

Changing homepage is done in the settings of your internet browser: In Internet Explorer go to Internet Options, and under the General tab, will be the ‘Home page’ settings. Simply change the Ask page to your preferred start page: www.google.co.uk

Mobile antivirus HELLO AUNTY: Do I need an antivirus system on my iPhone 5 or on my wife’s Samsung? Keep up the good work. Barry.

Aunty says: Most tablets and iPhones are unlikely to get viruses as most of the apps you download will be checked before they are made available on apps stores. The apps are what’s called ‘Sandbox’, which means that they don’t have permission to access the system files of the phone.

So the phone is not going to get a virus, unless you install an app from an ‘unofficial’ source. However, if you want an antivirus system, simply look in the apps store for one that you want.

The Millennials (the generation born since the mid 80s) appear to have lost interest in the sport and it is hardly surprising. Why? Golf hasn’t moved with the times and the vast majority of senior members would nod and suggest that that is good thing.

Therefore the average age of the participants is getting older. There is a reducing supply of young blood flowing along the conveyor belt.

Many golf courses introduce junior player schemes but the places in these are most frequently taken by the offspring of existing members who would possibly join anyway.

A few weeks ago on Bay Radio, Campbell raised this issue and, as with many of my peers, I was somewhat dismissive of the suggestion that my favourite sport was reducing in popularity. Largely because I have seen no evidence. My home golf course is busy. The past year has seen a regular flow of visiting players. When I mentioned this in conversation with The Usual Suspects who hack around with me each week, they all expressed surprise that there were discernible signs of decline.

And even in the UK the situation is not apparent at grass roots level. I discussed this with a recent visitor from Southern England.

Roger Willes is a member of Hartley Witney Golf Club and a member of various official bodies. He suggests that any loss is often balanced by growth in other areas. “A recent golf club in our area was acquired by a development company who increased the fees to a level that was completely out of the

reach of the members, who understandably left in droves. The golf club was closed and the course was then divided into plots and sold for development into private dwellings and commercial properties. However the counter to that is the ‘Rory Effect’ which has seen youth membership double in certain clubs inspired by the success of some of our young European golfers.”

Yet Campbell, who is the main driving force behind golf in Spain is apparently, and worryingly, correct. Despite some good news there is undoubtedly an equal amount of bad news.

For young people the game isn’t dynamic enough. They are accustomed to instant

results which requires no long term focus of attention. Their view of competition is multi-faceted where success is measured in how quickly an objective can be overcome or a goal secured. So in future years when they learn that a novice player in their Grandparents days would typically face an interview to decide on his suitability, they will hoot with laughter. They will look at the elderly exponents of the sport and decide that it probably isn’t for them - at least not yet.

Is this a cause for concern? At this stage rumours of its death have been somewhat exaggerated. The game is thriving in new markets. China is booming. Emerging

Eastern European countries are piling vast sums into the creation of some spectacular and challenging courses and so there is strong evidence that the centres of excellence may be moving.

There is also evidence that while these new markets may prove to be the eventual saviours of the game at least one old established province is accepting the need to change.

The US PGA and TaylorMade are leading this move to modernise the game and we will look at that in more detail next week.

Some of you may need to have a lie down or a stiff drink afterwards.

A positive experience THE BRITISH are passionate about queues, according to research from Onepoll.com: I passionately hate them.

AND SO it is with a sinking feeling that I find myself in yet another claustrophobic traffic jam. But hang on a minute, it’s a much more positive experience because I’m driving a Toyota Yaris Hybrid and it thrives in such situations. In fact it is possible to travel up to two miles at 30mph on its electric motor, thus conserving expensive petrol.

The Yaris Hybrid is a joy because, as long as the driver is light with the right foot and the motor is sufficiently charged, it will automatically crawl along in EV (electric vehicle) mode.

If it doesn’t then there is an EV switch, awkwardly placed near the handbrake. Either way, progress is similar to the sound and pace of a milk float.

Woe betide the impatient motorist because apply too much pressure on the accelerator and it’ll start guzzling fuel.

There’s a similar temptation when other irritated motorists are forced to form an orderly queue behind as the driver nurses the little hybrid on its way. But when the traffic is slow moving it works well.

Normal driving results in the engine charging the motor back up in time to be used in another queue.

I would be happier if this hybrid technology was coupled to a more efficient diesel engine as it consumes too much petrol for my liking, really only allowing around 350 miles of travel on a

full tank. The tank is 36 litres or 7.9 gallons (compared to 42 litres in a standard Yaris, to make room for the hybrid battery) and during my test it has averaged 44mpg. This makes it much more appropriate for pottering around town rather than motorway munching.

It does have an excellent cruise control that can be used at speeds of 26mph and above even with EV mode. It can be set at 30mph and no matter whether travelling downhill or up it will stick rigidly to this speed, which is particularly helpful when a speed camera is present.

A unique interior is made all the more so by what appears to be a light turquoise woodchip wallpaper effect on the dashboard and door inserts, which you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. It is actually a fabric but at a quick glance looks very much like wallpaper.

Equipped with a good level of features the Yaris Hybrid gets all round electric windows, air conditioning, Sat-Nav and a CD player.
