Valcárcel announces bidding for Corvera San Javier airport continues to grow while Corvera remains unopened

APPARENTLY CORVERA airport will be open to a bidding war for services this month, even though the major concessions and service companies seem apathetic to do so! On Wednesday, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, President of the regional government, said “ I am almost completely sure that bidding will start this month for the new Corvera airport.” When asked by journalists from the Europa Press if there are companies that have already shown interest in bidding, Valcárcel said he has “no idea” but assumes that “there will be interest, because the airport is a necessity for this region and while it’s necessary, it will be profitable!”

Valcárcel also expressed his desire that the airport will be up running by Easter 2014! This past May, the Ministry of Public Works and Planning said they were initiating proceedings to terminate the contract of Corvera airport with Aeromur because they had not finished the airfield! It is a process that now means the contractor has to present its defence, or walk away, as they may deem fit. Subsequently, the regional gov-

ernment has to make a series of legal briefs, which may take a few more months, as explained from the Ministry!

Meanwhile, life goes on without Corvera and this week it was announced that two new flight connections will link San Javier airport with Madrid and Barcelona from September 2013. This was confirmed to ABC by managing director of Spanish company Good Fly, Felipe de Burgos, who hopes that the planes will start operating on 11th September, “at this time we offer flight bookings on our website and in the next days they will appear on all the major Internet search engines. “ Flights will depart from San Javier airport to Barcelona every day at 2:00pm with a starting price of 69 euros per ticket and to Madrid daily at 6:15pm. Both flights will be available from Sunday to Friday, as the company does not operate on Saturdays. Madrid Tickets will be sold from 59€ and the price will increase depending on the number of seats available. Returns are scheduled from El Prat at 4:15pm and arrive at 5:45pm, while the last flight will leave at 8:30pm from Barajas and land at San Javier at 9:55pm.

During his visit Serafín Castellano appealed to beach goers to act responsibly and asked citizens to respect the warning flags to avoid risky situations on the beaches.

Unemployment in Torrevieja drops by 408 people

By Keith Nicol AS WE enter the summer season, unemployment figures for the month of June in Torrevieja have fallen again; this time by a further 408 people. According to statistics from June 2013, show that unemployment decreased by 408 people, of which 218 were men and 190 women.

Those between the ages of 25 and 44 years were the largest group signing off, accounting for a total of 247. For June, Torrevieja led employment growth in the Vega Baja, followed by Santa Pola with 221 finding employment. However, even with new developments such as Zenia Blvd and a rise in construction, Orihuela is not showing any major sign of growth, as their significant figures only recorded a low of 41 people signing off the dole and taking up employment. But while Torrevieja’s figures are very encouraging, there are still 9,934 people registered as unemployed, as of June 30, 2013.

Expats fan the WFA flames

by Jack Troughton THE CONTROVERSIAL decision to scrap the Winter Fuel Allowance for expat pensioners by applying a ‘temperature test’ continues to cause outrage throughout Europe.

Campaigners hoping to protect the entitlement plan to pressure Parliament and have launched a petition calling for the WFA for expats to be maintained.

Chancellor George Osborne believes the move will save the Treasury £30 million – currently 100,000 people receive the universal benefit – described as a “substantial amount”. Yet in the days after announcing the move, a government spokesman was on television explaining £30 million spent on providing health care to non-EU citizens was “a drop in the ocean”.

Political campaigner Margaret Hales MBE believes the move to be “arrogant” and said opponents were already extremely sceptical of the temperature test which will cut the payments of up to £300 to pensioners living in countries with a higher average temperature that South East England.

Margaret, who lives in Benitachell, has written a “rather rude” letter to Mr Osborne warning of a backlash against the government by denying “fully paid up” pensioners

And she said the Chancellor was applying the common myth that the Continent enjoyed warm winters. “For example this winter on the Costa Blanca was very cold, very chilly – and I know people living inland have found it freezing – I was in Madrid in the middle of a blizzard,” said Margaret.

ENVY “This decision is politics of the worst sort and pandering to the image of people living in the sun sipping gin and tonics – it is the politics of envy and stupidity.

“The WFA is a universal right. This is the thin end of the wedge and picking on people who cannot really make a fuss.”

Margaret said many people moved to Spain when the country was “as cheap as chips” but pensioners all over Europe were feeling the pinch and the cost of heating a home had risen sharply. “The perception of us living here in luxury is so arrogant, an arrogant view of the British expat living abroad,” she added. “It is also based on the views of people coming here in June, July, August and September.”

And the protesters have found an ally in Sir Roger Gale, MP for North Thanet, who wonders how the “temperature gauge” system can be made to work – and fears a legal challenge to ending the WFA to expats.

He said: “This is based on the thesis that expat UK citizens are all rich, idle, spend their days lying in the winter sun and drinking G&T and do not need the modest sum hitherto available to help pay winter fuel bills.

“The facts, of course, are rather different.

As I know from my overseas mailbag, many retired UK citizens, having worked and paid UK taxes throughout their lives – and in some cases still paying tax in Britain – are now elderly, inform, living in genteel poverty and are feeling the cold.”

He said he used to support Britain’s policy of overseas aid to third world countries. “I now feel if money is tight then our own expat retirees, having paid their dues, are more deserving of financial support than countries that can build rockets, engage in space programmes and develop nuclear capabilities.”

Spain’s birth rate drops – again!

SPAIN’S BIRTH rate has dropped for the fourth year running, while the marriage rate continues to rise. It seems that everyone is getting hitched but nobody is having babies! Last year there were just 453,000 births in Spain, with fewer women deciding to have children and the age of women that do decide to plunge into motherhood increasing year by year: the average age for becoming a parent now stands at 33 for women and 36.2 years for men. This trend is expected to significantly impact Spain’s aging demographic over the next 20 years.

New speed limit for buses

FOLLOWING THE Avila bus crash on Monday that killed nine passengers, the Deputy Director of Mobility Management of the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), Federico Fernandez, has confirmed that the department is considering reducing the speed limit for 25,000 buses registered before 2007 that do not carry seat belts. The survivors of the crash said the bus was speeding into a bend.

The decision was met with criticism

by the president of the manufacturers’ association ASCABUS, Emilio Ugarte: “It’s silly – these vehicles must have some speed in order to operate efficiently,” he said. The president of the State Association of Victims of Trafficking (DIA), Francisco Canes, said: “Bus accidents often have nothing to do with speed. Also, how would such a limit on coaches not fitted with belts be effectively policed?” It is not yet known what the

Orihuela Costa updates

by Keith Nicol MUCH HAS been said by local political parties on the Orihuela Costa about the state of affairs along the coast, while local journalists and commentators form all nationalities have criticised the lack of footbridges, general cleanliness and poor traffic infrastructures that plague the Orihuela Costa, with no end seemingly in sight! In response to these criticisms Orihuela’s Councillor for the Coast, Beaches International Residents and Transport, Martina Scheurer wanted to highlight a number of important matters. She started with talking about the sale of land for development on the coast, which was to be used to improve facilities on the coast. About this she noted that the agreement with the local government was that 40% of the sale of land would go for investment on the Costa and this agreement has been maintained. At the present moment, she noted that “we are talking about an amount of approximately

one million Euros which will be designated to different projects. The most outstanding one is the La Regia Park. Further investments will be made in the infrastructure of Orihuela Costa, such as for example in the road Carretera San Miguel de Salinas between the commercial centre La Fuente, up to and passing Mercadona. This part of the street has been in a terrible state for many years; footpath is missing, zebra crossing not good condition; accessibility not respected etc. It is important to invest in the infrastructure of Orihuela Costa, as this is the mirror of our area and the first impact, which all visitors have with Orihuela Costa. The beaches and the costal area are very important, but certainly the urbanisations situated a bit inland are as important as well.”

IF YOU have a teenager at home, or you are one yourself, that is looking for a new sport or activity to pass away a few evening hours this summer, then this might be perfect for you! San Fulgenio Town Hall are offering two trial fitness classes for teenagers between 12 and 16 years of age at the Sports Centre on Urbanisation La Marina. The trial classes take place on Friday the 12th and 19th of July from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. These first two classes will be free of charge but there will be a small fee for subsequent classes and all you have to do is to just turn up on the night. The classes are organised by Howards Gym, Ciudad Quesada in collaboration with the Office for the Urbanisations.

Local business development grants approved

By Keith Nicol THE COUNCILLOR for Employment, Promotion and Development of the City of Torrevieja, José Antonio Sánchez, reports that the Provincial Council of Alicante has awarded the City of Torrevieja a grant of 2,750 Euros, to help proceedings in local development.

This grant was requested from the council in order to co-finance a whole wide range of training programs to improve the professional skills of unemployed workers between the months of April to September inclusive.

So far the courses that have been conducted include Food Handler, English, Russian, Basic Computer Skills

and Fork Lift driver: courses that have involved a total of 145 unemployed. Courses that are still pending include German courses, Office Basics, Google Business, Photography and Food Handling.

Through these initiatives the Department of Employment, Promotion and Development of the City of Torrevieja reaffirms its commitment to provide job seekers with adequate resources to enable them to expand and renew their knowledge and skills, adapting to the current labour market needs, and to continue fighting for employment with quality training.

Town Hall meets market vendors

Regular work groups are planned to deal with the future of markets in the city

by Keith Nicol This was the first such meeting between the two bodies with the impetus being the establishment of a working group that will serve to enhance the activities of the sector. This first such meeting was also attended by the Mayor, Miguel Angel Cámara. The main thrust of the gathering was in order to agree stimulus measures and for the Town Hall to show their support for the sector.

Among the issues that have been addressed is the agreement of a management system for the collection of tax, taking into account

the suitability of direct debit, monthly subscription receipts or improvements in payment procedure.

The working group agreed to establish the rate of fees for special use of private or public roads, taking into account the cost of providing the service, the financial capacity of the taxpayer, the efforts of this group to reduce existing debt, their collaboration in the collection of waste in the markets and investments made to improve uniformity and aesthetics of the market stalls. The group will meet again in September to prepare future ordinances that affect other aspects for market stall holders.

By Keith Nicol THE RAMON Gaya Museum was brightened up this week with the sights and sounds of 20 children who were participating in the painting workshop, where students analyze the paintings of Ramón Gaya, learn about his different techniques and perform their own artist interpretations of his various works.

The first day concentrated on developed the technique of ‘Collage’, using various materials such as magazines, newspapers, brown paper, silk, wooden sticks, glues and silicones, etc to build their own ‘collar’ as a tribute to Ramon Gaya, with diffeent techniques studded during the course.

Rajoy under pressure to come clean

A handwritten notebook is said to record illegal payments made to senior members of the PP party for years, including Mariano Rajoy. In January, El País published photocopied pages of similar notebooks. ACCORDING TO a new poll by researchers at Hotels.com, a fifth of British mothers became pregnant while on holiday - with Spain the number one ‘conception hotspot!’ The survey of 2,000 people found 18% of British women admitted conceiving while on holiday. 19% of those conceived in Spain and 15% found themselves in the family way after a ‘home holiday’ in the UK. Third, with 12%, was France, Italy fourth with 9% and Portugal fifth with 7%. The survey found that almost a quarter of travellers admitted to having sex with a stranger on holiday and 40% of men and 32% of women admitted having sex on the beach.

He said that bursars had been made aware that if a student has payment problems, all possible assistance must be extended before considering ejection from the system. Not millionaires

REGARDING GOVERNMENT plans for winter fuel allowance, the announcement of plans to withdraw WFA from expatriates is in my view probably aimed at votecatching as so many Brits do not understand that we are not millionaires because we live in Spain. Most of us find it costs us less to live here than in UK and because it is better for our health.

I strongly believe that when Brit pensioners retire after a working lifetime, having paid all their dues, they should be entitled to retire wherever they wish without losing their entitlements. It is okay, it seems, to retire to Blackpool, Bournemouth or Brighton but not Benidorm or Barcelona. Heaven help us that we should actually enjoy our retirement!

I wonder if any MPs have spent any winter months in Spain? If so they should know that it can be extremely cold and with the high cost of electricity we pensioners, as a rule, cannot afford central heating. Many, like me, may be found huddled over an estufa in the evenings or going to bed early.

The government could concentrate on those immigrants and work shy individuals in the UK receiving benefits to which they are not entitled - that would save more money than taking away the WFA. Pamela Dawson Tasker

Cycle licences IN REPLY to the letter of David Edwards (21st – 27th June issue) as an active club cyclist (and motorist) there are certain points that Mr Edwards should be made aware of.

First, a bike is classed as a vehicle in its own right. All the cyclists I know, and there are many, have cars so they directly pay towards the use of the roads. Second, I accept that many cyclists, especially utility and casual cyclists, pay nothing and are probably not insured. However, probably a majority of club / sporting cyclists, who are usually the ones using the road network more expansively, will have a competition licence issued by their provincial cycling federation which in turn is affiliated to the national federation.

Apart from allowing the cyclist to compete in official events, the licence

also provides full third party liability insurance at all times he or she is riding. My licence cost me 65€ for the year and also includes IVA so there is a contribution to the state. That licence fee works out infinitely more expensive than a driving licence, and more than some people pay for their annual car tax.

If Mr Edwards wants to ‘penalise’ cyclists to use the roads, then maybe he should also encourage, in particular British drivers, to respect the 1.5 metres passing law. In my experience the British are by far the worst offenders on Spanish roads and many in untaxed, (therefore uninsured with no ITV) illegal non-Spanish matriculated cars.

Warning to expats

I WOULD like to warn all expats about some waiters along the Torrevieja sea front trying to overcharge for drinks if they know you are foreign. It does not seem to be a problem if you order food as well but if you are having only drinks and you ask for the bill, some waiters/ waitresses will tell you verbally how much and not bring the bill and probably overcharge you. You should always insist on receiving the bill before you pay and it is best to know the going rate before hand. I have not experienced this problem at La Mata or Guardamar.

Benefit fraud

AFTER READING your article in edition 716 about ‘benefit fraud’ I feel compelled to write.

I recall several months ago a letter in RTN accompanied by a cartoon which hit the nail on the head. The ‘benefit fraud’ subject does unfortunately need repeating.

I am sick of lazy people thinking they are entitled to welfare. As a law-abiding Brit it upsets me to think Spain has the dubious honour of being the number one country for Brits committing benefit fraud to migrate to.

Minister for Welfare Reform David Freud seems well suited for the job, especially since his name ‘Freud’ is so similar to the word ‘fraud’.

Living nearby is a person who looks the type for ripping off the system.

He is healthy, yet doesn’t work, comes in late drunk, plays very loud music, damages other people’s property and has a noisy dog that he takes to the park to unload and never cleans up after it.

Just the sort of person you don’t want for a neighbour. Let’s hope Mr Freud catches lots of Mr Frauds!

Don’t tar us all with the same brush

I HAVE just read your letter of the week and feel so sorry for the residents of the community involved. But let’s not tar all Presidents with the same brush - there are a lot of very good presidents out there. I have been our President now for over six years.

I like to think that our residents can come to me with any problem from ‘where is the nearest butchers’; ‘will you water my plants’; ‘I’m landing late on Friday, will you get me some shopping’; to more serious matters.

Community Presidents should remember that they have not been promoted to some higher being but are there to help and work for the community. If I cannot resolve a problem I will seek advice from someone who can.

Surely the Urbanisation must have known what these people were like before they voted them in? As all Presidents know you can just as easily be voted out, so come on people, find some backbone, call a meeting and vote to replace these people. Because what can they do when they are no longer in office - they will be the ones with no friends and O! The shame! Let this horrid woman have her tantrums - she is only showing herself up.

Tax gets Messi

by Jack Troughton WORLD FOOTBALL legend and key Barcelona player Lionel ‘Leo’ Messi could face a 9 million euro tax bill to fend off allegations he defrauded the taxman over lucrative global image rights, it was revealed this week.

Prosecutors maintain the 26-year-old and his father Jorge Horacio were caught offside and failed to declare part of the star’s earnings between 2007 and 2009. Auditors say the public purse is owed some 4.1 million Euros.

It was claimed a complex web of international companies was used to disguise a part of the footballer’s income from Spanish authorities.

But the soccer star and his father have denied allegations of dishonesty ever since they hit the public spotlight. It is understood, however, they would accept a monetary ‘score draw’ to close the matter.

And according to influential Spanish newspaper El Pais, the Argentine-born star’s legal team are working towards a settlement. Messi and his father have been ordered to appear before a Barcelona judge in September.

The paper underlines that under the law, if the tax bill is agreed and paid within two months since father and son were named and shamed in the investigation the footballer – a goodwill ambassador for charity UNICEF – will pay a smaller amount in tax and a reduced fine.

And as negotiations continue between the Messi legal team and government counterparts, El Pais quotes ‘judicial sources’ in estimating the final tab. It could add up to as much as paying the original 4.1 million Euro bill, a 4 million Euro fine, and something like 1 million Euros in interest.

CELEBRITY Website ‘Celebrity Networth’ boasts that Messi is the highest paid

footballer in the world worth a “basic” $44.7 million a year before endorsements enter the calculation.

But last month Messi wrote on Facebook how the family only learned of the court action through the media and immediately denied committing any offence.

He wrote: “We have always fulfilled all out tax obligations following the advice of our tax consultants, who will take care of clarifying this situation.”

Messi’s father Jorge has earlier said they were angry at what he described as a media “witch-hunt’ - and the footballer’s lawyers declared they were “convinced” the respected sportsman had “scrupulously” complied with Spanish law over his tax affairs.

The legal team underlined how Messi would pay any final amount agreed upon – despite publicity leaving him in an “impossible” situation – adding: “We are convinced he has paid everything he has been legally required to.”

Messi’s father was confident of a resolution – and told the world’s media his son paid huge amounts in tax, “an eightfigure sum every year.”

He said the authorities and their own tax advisors would reach a proper settlement – stating the pair always paying their taxes on time as advised by advisors - but claimed sections of the media had whipped up a cruel “slur campaign” against them.

Parking problems

by Jack Troughton BRITISH MUSIC fans heading for the legendary Benicassim Festival are being urged to watch a YouTube video and take simple measures to protect themselves and their valuables.

Some 18,000 Brits – around 80% of the crowd - are expected at Spain’s answer to Glastonbury and the British Consulate film is aimed at making sure they enjoy the occasion – rather than spending time reporting lost and stolen possessions, especially passports.

But in previous years as many as 110 British passports went missing – alongside other Consulate issues ranging from hospitalisations to sexual assaults.

The video ‘Enjoy Benicassim Festival’ has already had 6,000 views on YouTube and contrasts the fun of the event to the personal stories of people whose experience last year was ruined after having passports and valuables stolen.

It is just one of the initiatives designed

to cut crime figures - British Consulate in Alicante is also working closely with Benicassim police, the town hall and festival organisers to raise awareness of potential risks.

San Cristobal in La Mata

by Keith Nicol LA MATA was awash with colour, security forces plus a touch of pomp and circumstances on Wednesday, as San Cristobel or Saint Christopher’s Day, was celebrated in the town’s main square.

The Day of San Cristobal also marked the XX Conference on Coexistence and Liability in Traffic with the FAS. The event was precided over by La Hermandad de San Cristóbal (The Brotherhood of St Christopher), organised by Antonio Marín, in the presence of the Conseller de Gobernación y Justicia, (minister for Justic in Valencia) Serafín Castellano with the participation of mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon and chiefs of staff of regional ,ilitart, security and emergency services. At 1.00pm there was a flag raising ceremony and opening of the static display of vehicles and military units,

including various departments of the police (local, National and Valencian), Guardia Civil, UME and emergency services, accounting for more than one hundred professionals who conducted exercises and drills with canine units and demonstrated rescue techniques.

At seven in the evening, the entourage was joined by other delegates from the Government of Valencia, Paula Sánchez de León, and the deputy in Alicante, Alberto Martinez, along with Eduardo Dolon.

A mass was held in the square, headed by the pastor and archpriest of Torrevieja José Luis Arnal, along with hundreds of members of the public. The evening finished with an official dinner at Meson ‘El Huertano’ where many different awards were given out, with the main prize of the evening going to local journalist Encarna Hernandez Torregrosa.

Pipe Band supports Armed Forces Day

They are Torrevieja Pipes & Drums who travel all over the province to perform at variety events. Last month they were on the road again, this time going inland to the town of Pinoso to help celebrate the Armed Forces Day on the 29th June 2013.

by Paul Thomas, the owner of the T-Tapas Bar at Pinoso invited the band to play to help raise money for Help for Heroes. Paul is an ex service man and has run the bar for the last two years. He said that “This was an ideal night to raise some much needed funds for my favourite charity. My customers were delighted when the band marched down the street in front of the bar making a grand entrance.

They continued to entertain the customers and Mark, the dancer received a standing ovation after his display of the sword dance and the highland fling.”

The night continued with live music and a spectacular firework display.

Royal British Legion require an accompanist THE ROYAL British Legion Torrevieja Branch are busy putting plans together for their fund raising concert in November. For this one time event they require an organist and an accompanist for their Royal British Legion Show, which will take place on 6th November 2013, at the Municipal Theatre, Torrevieja. The Blues Brothers Band return to San Javier Jazz

by Keith Nicol THERE IS something a little different on offer this weekend at the San Javier Jazz festival as the line up deviates from its Jazz roots to headliners playing heavy metal, Blues, soul and Motown! Tonight, Friday July 12th are legends of progressive rock and hard rock, with more than four decades of successes on their backs: Uriah Heep. They have been one of the most respected British bands on the rock scene, ever since their formation in 1969, along with Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple; the quartet of hard rock legends.

Their discography includes such masterpiece albums as Look at Yourself, Demons and Wizards, and Return to Fantasy.

Over the last four decades they have have also sold over 30 million records. Currently led by guitarist and founder Mick Box, who is joined on stage by special guest, and former singer for three years with the band, John Lawton, Uriah Heep debut at Jazz San Javier tonight, in one of the most anticipated concerts of all time at the festival.

Opening on Saturday is the immensely talented Hierry

Lang Trio and Matthieu Michel. According to the organisers, for many years San Javier Jazz craved bringing the great Thierry Lang to the festival. He was one of the first European musicians who recorded at the legendary record label ‘Blue Note’, and in the festival’s opinion, “one of the best European jazz pianists of all time.” Also on stage are Doctor Honoris Causa from the European University, who visits San Javier with his trio and a special guest, flugelhorn virtuoso Matthieu Michel, another major Swiss musician. A concert deluxe for jazz fans.

Then it’s time to switch from Jazz to Blues as the legendary blues and soul band, The Blues Brothers Band, takes to the stage.

Founded in 1978 by actors Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, as a skit on Saturday Night Live, the band became world famous after the success of the movie The Blues Brothers, one of the funniest movies with a background, of blues, soul and Motown. The band features two of its original members still in front, Steve Cropper and Lou Marini, accompanied by great musicians like John Tropea, Leon Pendarvis, Eric Udel and Lee Finkelstein, who have spent decades in the group, The Blues Brothers Band returns to San Javier Jazz with two new singers, ready to offer one of the most spectacular concerts of the entire festival.

By Keith Nicol THE FIRST Open Skateboard championship in San Pedro del Pinatar attracted almost fifty participants last weekend. The contest was won by Manuel Alvarez from Valencia, followed by local skater Miky Huercano, and Adrián García of Murcia.

A total of 49 young people from different parts of the Region and nearby provinces like Alicante, Valencia, and Almeria. The competition began around 1:00 pm with younger participants, those under 16, who showed their ‘tricks’ on the slopes of the skate park. In the senior section, a total of 22 participants showed their prowess before dozens of fans were able to witness the exhibition from Pedro Sánchez, who is considered one of the top ten nationally.

The Manuel Alvarez won the first prize of 250 euros, followed by Miky Huercano, which won the second prize of 150 euros, and Adrian Garcia, who received 100 for third.

In addition, sponsors of the event presented the winners clothes and body protectors, among other gifts.

The winner in the category of under 16 was Juan Fernández, followed by Javi Martínez, Pablo Climet, Toni Carter, and Teresa Garcia. All were presented with sports equipment and supplies.

Murcia’s new photo contest PHOTOGRAPHERS IN MURCIA have the opportunity to win prizes in another local photo contest, this time dealing with the topics of Ethnography, Culture and Traditions of Murcia. The emphasis is in on the promotion of the city’s historic gardens with the entry deadline being September 18th, 2013. The prizes range from 600 to 100€. There are three modes of photographs starting with a specific theme, which this year is ‘The historic gardens of the Region of Murcia and the people who live it.’ The other two categories are for Contemporary and Historical photography.

The Deadline for submissions is September 18th, 2013.

What a waste?

AT A time when countries around Europe are having to ‘tighten their belts’ it would seem ludicrous, to most sane-thinking folk, that the Euro-state was still wasting huge amounts of its constituents’ money, would it not?

But apparently, that’s just what is happening. I sat open-mouthed listening to a radio programme that revealed how the so-called European External Action Service (EEAS), headed by unelected Labour peer Baroness Ashton, is “ballooning out of control” and “threatening to rival the diplomatic corps of member states” like Britain.

This service, apparently, aids the pre-existing diplomatic services of member states. It certainly didn’t seem to aid Matt Sinclair’s blood pressure. Matthew Sinclair, of the Tax Payers’ Alliance, told a Radio 4 audience: “It’s ridiculous that British taxpayers are paying once for our own Foreign Office and again for another one in Brussels. Ashton’s army of ‘Eurocrats’ are now dotted all around the world too, living at the expense of hard-pressed families back at home.” He added, “That the EEAS has grown so rapidly shows that top European officials aren’t living in the real world. It’s high time the budget for this wasteful body was slashed.”

A presumably very well-paid EEAS spokesperson quickly responded: “The EEAS was created by unanimous decision of all EU countries, including the UK. Right from the word go, we have done everything possible to ensure that costs are kept under very tight control.” The gravy-train defender was quick to go into blah, blah, blah mode and gushed the multifarious benefits of this piggy-back diplomatic corps.

Again it was stressed how tight the control of costs were. Hmmm?

A written freedom of information request to the European Commission by Euro-MP David Campbell Bannerman, revealed just how ‘tight’ that control really is. Okay here is just some of the detail: “There are now 3,392 diplomatic staff in more than 120 coun-

tries. [This includes] 55 in the US, 47 in Russia, 36 in Japan and 26 in India.” They’ve even got a crew of 13 on the Caribbean island of Jamaica. Now, that’s a gig that I’d like, wouldn’t you? Surely, each and every European country (sorry, state) has its own diplomatic staff covering these far-flung places - so why oh why is it necessary to have an extra 3,392 people covering work that’s already being covered?

The EEAS spokes-bot added: “The EEAS complements national diplomatic services, and in no way whatsoever threatens to supplant them. That never was the intention and never will be. They play entirely separate, but complementary roles.” Oh, it’s just complimentary, that’s okay then. So how much does it cost EU taxpayers’ for the privilege of these ‘complementary’ trough-snorters? The figures reveal: “the EEAS cost more than £440 million to run last year” and it “has expanded since its launch three years ago.” It’s a laugh, innit?

Not everyone thinks so and Euro-MP Bannerman fumed away in the Daily Express this week: “The ambition of Brussels goes beyond a fleet of posh cars fluttering the EU flag. It’s about supplanting our own diplomats as any foreign government’s first port of call.” He further argued, “The propaganda that comes out of the EU would have us believe that being a member makes us stronger. How can that possibly be the case when the UK’s voice and influence are lost in the dithering of a diplomatic service that has to satisfy the will of 28 countries?”

He told readers: “Only nations need embassies, so who do the EEAS represent? Every time I ask them and Baroness Ashton what national interests they represent, they fall silent.” I bet they do Davey boy, a bit like the Kinnocks when they’re asked about how

many of their family members are raking it in doing ‘valuable’ EU work. I’m reminded of Ian Dury and his Blockheads singing, “What a waste! What a waste!

But the world don’t mind...”

Oh well, “plus ca change,” as we say here in the hard pressed Midlands. At least the summer sun has now come out...

CHILDREN FROM the Saharawi region are spending some time in Mucia as part of an initiative from La Asociación Vacaciones en Paz (Holidays in Peace Association) whose aim it is to provide some relief for children during the summer, away from the harsh conditions of the refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria.

Murcia’s Councillor for Social Welfare and Health, Maria del Carmen Pelegrin, welcomed the small group of Sahrawi, who are spending a few weeks with local families in Murcia. This is an initiative of La Asociación Vacaciones en Paz, who along with the collaboration of the City Council, have been offering these holidays for 17 years.

This summer, 155 children are spending July and August in the Region of Murcia, of which 26 are staying with host A thrilled audience families in the municipality of Murcia. La Asociación enjoying the Vacaciones en Paz is an initiative to provide Sahrawi music of the children with temporary shelter, that was started back Orbi Playa Big Band in1996 and has been growing ever since.

Reach Out say “Thank You” Nueva Fraternidad raises 3,700 euros with the “I Handball Tournament”

by Keith Nicol REACH OUT Charity has doubled in size, is busier than ever and striving toward their goal of providing Torrevieja with their first homeless shelter. Over the past couple of weeks they have been visited by Torrevieja’s entire Municipal Council to see for themselves the valuable work the NGO is doing. Karolina Leonard, President of Reach Out wanted to say a quick word of thanks to all those that have supported them, since their foundation two years ago and especially to the British Community for their constant support and donations.

Karolina said “Every day we are open we are just overwhelmed by all the donations coming into our centre; clothes, bedding, bric-a-brac and of course, especially all that food. We have had absolutely fantastic financial support through which we are able to provide so much more then just the bare necessities for some very special cases. We are now renting two apartments to use as emergency accommodation for families, were instrumental in helping evicted families to find a new place to live and our best achievement is the repatriation or re-housing of up to date, 21 homeless people.”

She continued “As we have just passed our second anniversary we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful people who have so generously contributed to our charity and enabled us to achieve all this. Thanks to

BEACH HANDBALL was the main event on Playa de los Náufragos beach last weekend, as the first such tournament to be hosted in Torrevieja, took place among the sunbathers! The event was organised by the ONG Nueva Fraternidad and Ana Francos, their president, said that they raised 3,700 euros, which would be used towards the building of showers and latrines in the Republic of Rwanda.

To date, 9.700 euros of the required 18,000 euros has been raised, and the new hygiene facilities will benefit young students and children. Risk of electrocution from unsafe Spanish sockets THERE ARE a number of specific national practices, habits and traditions associated with electrical wiring in Spain that significantly differ from the UK. These include ring mains, fused plugs and socket outlets.

Ring mains are a wiring technique primarily adopted in the UK and used to a lesser degree in the Republic of Ireland. The only other European country which uses ring mains is Cyprus. The concept has been criticized in a number of ways, these include: fault conditions are not apparent when in use; complexity of safety tests; balancing requirement; electromagnetic interference and adequate protection from over-current protection. That’s all highly technical stuff, but these disadvantages could explain the lack of widespread adoption outside the UK. In Spain, sockets are wired to a Christmas tree type circuit with circuit breaker protection provided according to the current rating of the cable used to wire the sockets. High powered appliances such as washing machines, dish washers and electric ovens are wired separately. Electrical appliances purchased in the UK will work with the Spanish system, though the plugs are different.

The ‘Schuko’ is the adopted standard socket and plug used throughout Spain since 2002. Subsequently, there are several types of obsolete, dangerous sockets still in existence in Spanish

homes used on a daily basis that are unsafe because they do not provide earth (ground) protection which increases the risk of an electric shock. Older properties can have as many as four different types of obsolete sockets.

A Schuko plug features two round pins for the live and neutral contacts, plus two flat contact areas on the top and bottom side of the plug for the protective earth. Schuko sockets form a cavity into which the plug is inserted. They can be mated in two ways, therefore live and neutral can arrive on either pin at the appliance making them unpolarized. If there is a need to be sure which side is live, the socket’s polarity must be tested. As with most types of European sockets, Schuko can also accept the 2-pin Europlug.

When inserted into the socket, the Schuko plug covers the socket cavity (1) and establishes protective-earth connection through the earth clips (2) before the line and neutral pins (3) establish contact, thereby preventing users from touching connected pins. A pair of non-conductive guiding notches (4) on the left and right side provides extra stability, enabling the safe use of large and heavy plugs (e.g. those with built-in transformers or timers).

Summer garden musts but minimums by

SUMMERS IN Spain are for enjoying gardens rather than gardening until the first autumn rains appear. But there are a few important tasks to maintain as explained below.

Walk the garden each day to check that no plants are suffering from the long, hot days. Perhaps an irrigation jet is blocked or you left out an area of the garden when watering by hose or watering can.

Trim shrubs and trees to keep the best internal and external vistas clear and ensure you place seats, sunbeds and benches nearby.

Cut back excess growths starting to block paths and overgrow terraces. Trim off the spikey ends of potentially dangerous plants like yuccas and bougainvilleas. Dead head plants that continually flower.

Cut out any suckers starting to grow at the base of fruit trees.

Lightly summer prune stone fruit trees such as plums and peaches to keep in shape and stimulate next year’s fruit buds - and keep the height of the trees down to make harvesting easy.

Prune off excess leaf but not fruit-bearing growth on grape vines.

Dust grape vines and fruit vegetable plants such as tomatoes and aubergines with sulphur powder to control and prevent mildew and other fungal problems.

Remove dead leaves on geraniums and spray weekly with a neem or garlic insecticide spray.

Tie up fast-growing climbers.

Then just enjoy the summer - one of the joys of which is al fresco breakfasting, lunching and dining.

Since barbecuing is not the healthiest or tastiest form of cooking, also try cooking with tagines on charcoal cooker pots, using a solar cooker or mexican oven and use a paella for more than paellas - they are also handy for cooking a full English breakfast for four, or chops or fish for dinner.

If you have not considered buying a solar cooker - do. Ours is used several days a week. It was constructed from a kit purchased from www.alsol.es and is the small one metre diameter version.

Although we use our several sizes of paella pans for a variety of purposes, the main use is for paellas, especially as we grow most of the ingredients ecologically in the garden. Since there is much confusion over what constitutes a genuine quality Valencian paella we recently wrote a book about the history, ingredients, method of cooking and common problems.

Knowledgeable Spanish friends comment that their is nothing as good, even in Spanish: the book is available from Amazon and Quicksave Pedreguer.

One of the challenges is to grow most of the ingredients yourself to ensure that unnecesary chemical contaminants don’t enter the paella pan.

Real estate property law in Spain

THE COMMUNITY of owners: important changes on the Spanish Horizontal Division Law affecting the claim for lack of payment of community fees.

THOSE WHO are in a community of owners should know that the recent Law 8/2013 of 26th June modified the Horizontal Division Law (Act 49/1960).

Although several articles have been changed - especially those related to the quorum and number of votes needed to reach the different kind of agreements in a community - we will focus this article on the changes affecting the claim against property owners owing community fees. In this regard we would like to highlight that: 1) From now on, the person or company who acquires a property will be liable, together with the property, for the possible debts owed by the previous owners, for the

year of the acquisition and three natural years before. This is a really important change in the law, as before, the new owners were liable only for the debts of the year when they bought and the previous one, a maximum of two years. Now, the new owners could be liable for up to a maximum of four years’ debt.

This means that before buying a property, it is crucial you get a debt certificate from the community representatives, done with all the formalities stated by law, in order to make sure that you will not be liable for these debts, which could actually be very high.

2) Also, from now on, the community owners’ credits for debts representing the

current year and three years before will have preference regarding the article 1923 of the Spanish Civil Code.

This change is really important: it means that the community credit will have preference over the mortgages’ charging the property.

CONCLUSION These changes improve the community owners’ rights and possibilities to get paid and recover the community fees owed, by giving a preference and making the new owners (purchasers, bank executing a bank repossession, etc) liable for the pending debts for a longer period.

No pay for hospital priests THE DEPARTMENT of Health in the Valencian Region has failed to pay the salaries of 52 chaplains attached to various hospitals and health centres throughout the area. A priest’s monthly salary of around 800€ is augmented by twice yearly payments made by the consistory for services to patients and their families at clinics and hospitals. The clergy is now owed for more than a year.

The Department of Health does not deny the existence of the debt, yet does not provide the amount.

A spokesperson said: “The situation is similar to that faced by any other supplier of both goods and services to the regional department.

We are doing everything we can to find a solution as soon as possible.”

ARE YOU unable to get financial advice from your Bank or Financial advisor?

SINCE THE changes in the UK regarding the way in which financial advice is charged for, a large number of Banks closed their direct advice arms. What this means going forward is that there will be a great number of clients’ portfolios left unbalanced, i.e. not being reviewed on a regular basis and adjusted if needed to take into account changes in circumstances and/or market conditions. This will mean that clients’ portfolios will have a high likelihood of under-performing.

It is not only Banks that are ceasing to service clients. A large number of Financial Advisors in the UK are now not prepared to act on behalf of clients that reside overseas as they are unfamiliar with the tax and reporting requirements.

Plus, as reported by Dave Penny from Invest Southwest, you have the problem of financial advisors that leave certain Financial Management Companies and even Banks being threatened, supposedly under the Data Protection act or non-solicitation clauses, to stop them having any contact with previous clients.

Penny continues that this is a thinly veiled attempt by these organisations to protect their profits at the expense of clients and it keeps the number of unmanaged portfolios growing.

Penny added that if clients are not receiving ongoing pro-active support from their advisor, Bank or Financial Management Company, there is nothing to stop the clients from going elsewhere to a company that will provide the service levels required. It is easy to transfer management over.

Penny suspects that there are thousands of clients who have been through crashes, recoveries and market corrections without an attempt by their advisor to offer help or advice. The reason for this, he says, is that there is little monetary gain from doing this.

Benidorm’s ancient fort

A FORT discovered in La Cala de Benidorm is thought to have accommodated around 260 soldiers fighting with General Pompey, dating back some 2,000 years. Experts estimate that the fort is the oldest in the southeast of the peninsula.

It would have served as a lookout for ships passing by the Cabo de la Nao, headed to Cartagena with supplies for enemies fighting in the Roman civil wars. Benidorm was part of a defence network engineered by Sertorius and consisted of Cap Negret (Altea), Ifach (Calpe), Portet (Moraira) and the Montgo (Dénia). Experts describe the Benidorm find as “particularly important” as it will become a study model for other Roman fortifications on the Alicante coast. Benidorm’s mayor, Agustín Navarro, accompanied by deputy mayor, Gema Amor, visited the fort on Tuesday. The mayor described the discovery as, “An important asset for Benidorm’s cultural tourism.”

Kiss and tell GRACEFUL, INTELLIGENT, and talented, the Aqua Natura sea lions are also a very affectionate bunch – I know, because I’ve kissed one and it is a fishy business.

By Jack Troughton EACH OF the sea lions eats between two and three kilos of fish a day, so it is no real surprise their breath carries a gentle aroma.

RTN was introduced to the beasts at the Benidorm park and took along two young reporters to test out some of the attractions on offer – nine-year-old Paige and her brother Luke, six, from Polop, were unanimous in their praise.

It was great!

Visitors to Aqua Natura – it is next door to sister attraction, zoo Terra Natura – have two chances every day to watch the sea lions perform as there are shows at 12.30pm and 4pm.

And it is well worth venturing along to watch them in action, performing a range of tricks and comic turns with their handlers – and yes, they do like giving themselves a round of applause after each one.

In the water they are quick, acrobatic, and fun. One of the animals ‘shivered’ on the side of the water – asked what was wrong and to the background of the Jaws theme tune, she dived in and swam on her side, one flipper held up to resemble a shark’s fin.

Paige and Luke were also thrilled to take part in an interactive session with the sea lions (30€ or 15€ with an annual season pass).

SNORKEL Luke donned mask and snorkel to swim with Wally, a 36-year-old heavyweight originally from Patagonia. Luke said loved animals and he showed no sign of nerves despite being dwarfed by his underwater companion.

The pair also enjoyed throwing hoops for the sea lions, being pushed through the water by one of the animals, and generally having a cuddle and a few of the aforementioned kisses.

There is also an opportunity to learn a little

more about sea lions – that diet of fish, why they have large gullets to swallow fish on the go, and why they have a thick layer of blubber under the streamlined fur coat.

When it was all over Paige and Luke said goodbye and shook flippers with the animals – and, naturally, left with a parting kiss.

However, there is still much to do at Aqua Natura there are pools, one especially for young children - and waterslides to try out for more thrills and spills – all watched over by a small army of lifeguards, as well as a Mediterranean aquarium.

The park is clearly designed for excitement and adventure for all the family – and there are plenty of shaded areas to spend a few moments to catch your breath, eat a picnic, or enjoy a drink and a snack at one of the cafes.

CHANGE There are also changing rooms and baby changing facilities, and people with special needs are well catered for.

At the end of the day Luke said: “I absolutely loved everything – I loved swimming with Wally, I wasn’t scared at all.”

And Paige said she suspected sea lions might smell a little of fish. “We expected them to be a little fishy and they were but they are really cute and we enjoyed being so close to them.

“They were all really well trained and I loved the way they clapped at the end of the show.”

She added: “We are sure all our friends would love to come here and play – and meet the sea lions!”

Be safe on the beach…

THE BEACHES are one of the reasons why many people choose to come to Benidorm on their holidays understandable with its miles of golden sand.

But have you ever wondered what the brightly coloured candy-striped wooden huts along the beach are? Well they are first aid stations – and if you are holidaying with children it may be an idea to familiarise yourself with their location and set your towel, bucket and spade in close proximity.

If you do happen to need any sort of treatment then head to either the yellow and white stripped hut which is located on Levante beach or the multi-coloured ones on Poniente beach. They are manned all year round by staff contracted by the council - not volunteers such as Cruz Rojo. During the peak summer months they are open from 9am until 8pm and out of season (October - April) they are open from 10am till 5pm. And there is always a yellow ambulance parked nearby for any emergencies which cannot be dealt with on site.

The beaches are out of bounds between midnight and 7am to allow for cleaning - just be aware as it is your responsibility to familiarise yourself with the country’s local by-laws.

‘Infringement & Offences’ of beach by-laws are divided into three categories and can carry a maximum fine of 3,000€! Some of the infringements include playing games with balls or other equipment outside of designated areas that could disturb other beachgoers; using bath products such as soap/gel in sea or showers on beach; playing loud music that will disturb others; swimming when the red flag is flying; lighting a BBQ on the beach; fishing; leaving glass or toxic material on the beach and what will surprise many I guess - drinking alcohol on the beach.

Now I have seen many of these by-laws being abused and I think it would be up to the individual police officer to decide whether to fine the offender for a particular offence, but they would certainly be within their rights to do so. Remember, the saying goes: ‘Ignorance is no excuse to break the law’ ... you have been warned!

Don’t take the law into your own hands THE LAW can be frustrating in any country. Read forums anywhere in the world and people are likely to be complaining about the way that laws are made and upheld.

People can be prone to feel that the law always seem to work against them. In some cases they may be right, but in the vast majority of cases wherever there is a loser there’s a winner too. It just never seems to be you.

THE SAME can be said for landlords and tenants.

Whichever category you come under you can feel that the law works to make your life harder.

Landlords certainly feel that they have had a difficult time of it in the past. Feeling limited in their powers of eviction, some have even taken the law into their own hands and attempted to address their grievances through other means.

Driven to despair or sometimes just because of inconvenience, they have tried to force tenants out of a property through cutting off the water or electricity

supply. Some landlords have even resorted to entering the house whilst the tenant is still in occupation, removing their property and changing the locks.

There are several problems in taking these kinds of measures. First of all, they are illegal and instead of the tenant finding themselves in trouble, it is the landlord who could be accused of wrong doing.

They will be, at the least, in breach of contract and if they have entered and removed property without the tenant’s permission could also be charged with misappropriation.

If your tenant makes a profession out of renting property and then defaulting on the rent, they can

benefit from a landlord’s illegal activities. They themselves can lodge a complaint with the Guardia Civil which then means that any eviction process that’s underway is hindered whilst this further complaint is investigated. Exemplary behaviour on the landlord’s part will be much more effective.

It is unnecessary to take the law into your own hands.

It might have been more difficult before to have a tenant evicted but matters have improved from the landlord’s point of view and it is possible through legal means to have an obstructive tenant removed.

Don’t spoil your chances, take the correct legal steps and make sure that the law is on your side.

Pink Ladies family fun day

By Keith Nicol MARIA AND her pink ladies were back on the fund raising trial on Saturday, June 29th, this time working with business owners and visitors on the upper floor at La Fuente commercial Centre at Campomar. Maria and her Pink Ladies gave something back to the community in the way of a family fun day, all in aid of the AECC. The businesses that contributed to the day were Evolution Bar, The Champagne Bar, Fuegos Bar and Tigerfeet fashion boutique.

Local entertainers gave up their time for free in support of the cause and during the afternoon Paul Allen, Sandie Fitz, Alan Scott, Ashley Tweddle, Dan Davey and The Cages all entertained the passing crowds and Maria wanted to ask RTN to pass on her words of thanks to all the artists, the businesses and the support of local residents and visitors for their support for this very worthwhile cause that affects so many of us in one way or another. She wanted to pass on a special thanks to Alan and Eldon from Showadddywaddy legends who provided the sounds and technical support for the artists for the whole day.

Local businesses also provided numerous gifts for the raffle prizes and bottles of alcohol for a ‘Basket of Booze’ as a prize for who ever correctly guessed the total retail price of its contents. The final figure is not yet known but so far approximately 1,000 euros was raised on the day. Maria, herself a cancer sufferer said, “It’s amazing how the wonderful people of the Orihuela Costa come together time and again to help raise funds for the AECC and its early detection, and research programs. She would also like to thank her wonderful hard working Pink Ladies and Pink Panthers who worked tirelessly in the summer heat to ensure all went well on the day. Way out West Valle de Ayora THE VALLE de Ayora, the Valencian region’s most westerly valley, was historically an important north-south communication route and also marked the border between Christian and Muslim territories. There are vineyards and beautiful broad vistas of pine forests marred by the two vast cooling towers of the nuclear power station at Cofrentes, but a mere blip in the otherwise stunning mountain scenery.

As you drop down from the wine town of Requena at the northern point of the Valle to Cofrentes, you see its castle standing four-square on a rocky promontory above the village and, as you get nearer, you pass a large wetland, the confluence of the rivers Júcar and Cabriel. On the opposite side of the valley to the over-restored Arab castle is Mount Agrás, an extinct volcano. You can feast your eyes from the Mirador del Chulo on Calle Las Eras, a paved area with a fountain that gives you splendid views of the valley.

Most people come to Cofrentes to take the waters at the modernista spa of Los Hervideros (the boilers). Built in 1908, the Balneareo de Hervideros is almost a small modernista village, with a hotel, cottages, gardens, swimming pools, sports centre, mini-golf, supermarket, chapel, a theatre, hairdresser and gift shop. The scent of pine trees fills the air and aged ladies and gentlemen sit in the shade playing cards after their treatments in the baths. You can also see them walking along the byways aided by stout bamboo poles, which they carry with all the solemnity of a pilgrim on the road to Santiago, propelling himself along with his trusty staff.

While the nearby volcano might be extinct, its volcanic

activity keeps the water at a constantly warm temperature.

The salts and minerals it contains are said to be beneficial for those suffering from rheumatics and locomotive problems, while taking a tipple will also do your digestive system a power of good. You can even have a top-to-toe beauty treatment of vaporisation, hydro-massage, body peeling and power-shower, amongst a host of other ‘pamperings’.

Jalance is the second village of any size you come across as you drive down the Valle de Ayora. With a registered population of ten more than neighbouring Cofrentes, it could think of itself as being a bit of a ‘big brother’, although lacking the clout of the nuclear power station of Cofrentes which must make that particular village one of the richest in the Valencian Community, given the subsidies paid for having it there in the first place.

Wandering the streets up to Jalance Castle, you tread over the painted designs used as part of the decoration for the Fiesta de los Locos held on 28th December, but they must use pretty good paint because they seem to be there all year round. At various parts of the town you’ll see large tiled panels, part of a series telling the stories of the Moors and Christians turbulent history in the valley.

Jalance has its fair share of little corners and arches and if you don’t fancy a trudge all the way up to the ruined 11thcentury castle, at least climb the steps to the open plaza in front of the church, from where you have views over the rooftops and across the valley. Take the effort to go all way up, though, and you get wonderful views of the Valle de Ayora.

If you are there at a weekend or during August, you can visit the Cueva de Don Juan, a 60,000 cubic-metre cave at the end of a 12 km drive through a ravine that cuts into the Júcar valley. There are approximately 400 metres of stalactites and stalagmites to ponder on and archaeological remains from the Bronze Age to mull over. If you want to stay far from the madding crowd, four kilometres from the cave is El Moragete, a nature area with a campsite and the fonts of Fuente Bella and El Tobarro.

The Valle de Ayora is well known for its hearty country grub and gives its name to the famous gazpacho ayorinos, a rabbit and chicken stew with wafer-thin pasta. Each town in the valley has its own version of the dish. Cofrentes offers olla cofrentina, stewed pork, potatoes, pinto beans and cardoons (a vegetable of the thistle family) and in Jalance they serve up ajotono, mashed potato, cod and tomatoes. For dessert you could be offered grullos, honey cakes, or aguamiel, baked pumpkin slices with honey.

I ENDED last week’s article with three sentences that made use of the Imperfect Subjunctive. Here they are again: SI TUVIÉRAMOS más tiempo, haríamos mucho más.

If we had more time, we would do much more.

Si fuera él, tú sabrías primero.

If it were he (If it was him), you would know first.

past tenses, but the subjunctive part simply goes into the imperfect subjunctive, using the formation rules we have learnt in our last two articles. Here goes: Supongo que el concierto sea a las ocho.

I suppose that the concert is at eight o’clock Suponía que el concierto fuera a las ocho.

I supposed that the concert was at eight o’clock.

Si pudieran ayudar, estoy segura que lo harían.

If they could help, I’m sure that they would (do it).

NOTICE THAT all three of these sentences begin with the word “si” meaning “if” and also that the part of the sentence that isn’t in the imperfect subjunctive is in the conditional tense (haríamos; sabrías, harían). These are called conditional sentences and they refer to situations that are not actually happening, but potentially could happen. “If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world”. (Si ganara la lotería, viajaría alrededor del mundo). This is not very likely to happen, but in theory it is possible, and I am expressing what I “would do” if such a condition were to occur. So, expressing this hypothetical situation (in this case, winning the lottery) is one of the main uses of the Imperfect Conditional in Spanish.

Another use of the Imperfect Subjunctive is simply to express hypothetical situations in the past, rather than the present or future.

Probably the best way to tackle this is by turning into the past tense some of the sentences we have looked at previously in the present tense.

Several weeks ago we learnt about the present subjunctive and used a large number of example sentences. I am now going to go back to some of them and put them into the past. Depending on the context and meaning, the first part of these sentences could be in one of several

DURING MY twenty years as a professional book reviewer virtually all the works of author Bill Bryson have arrived on my desk for review. Not that I could teach Bill Bryson anything. He is a supremely gifted and original storyteller whose books have alternately reduced me to laughter at the man’s comic wit or amazed me by his scholarship of research and knowledge.

Bryson is an academic who can write seriously and intelligently on any subject while keeping the reader entertained with his witty asides and observations.

There’s nothing dry about the man, which is why I was happy to lose myself in his biographical study of a man whom Bryson readily admits in the opening chapter, he knows nothing about. He’s not alone – nor does the world. All we know of the Bard is that he was born in Stratford on Avon, that his father was an alderman named John, that he married Ann or Anne Hathaway and that his authorship of plays, poems, and sonnets is squabbled over today by eminent literary historians who should know far better. A hugely readable romp through English history of the Elizabethan and early Jacobite reigns flavoured with a contemporary feel for the period as well as a glowing tribute to the wit of England’s greatest writer by another who graces our time.

DEAR AUNTY: This refers to a telephone call I received this morning from a computer maintenance company, called I think E or C Solution, based in Manchester: the caller was called Shaun. He asked to speak to my husband (who doesn’t know how to use a computer!) and he said he was receiving messages from my computer to say that I had lots of errors and problems and it was about to crash.

I assured him I had no current problems and put the telephone down. This worried me as recently I had my bank account hacked into and now this. How did he get my telephone number in Spain and I wondered if you perhaps should warn your readers of this possible ‘scam’.

I am sure you agree that I was right to put the phone down as goodness only knows what questions he would have asked me about my computer. He was quite aggressive and angry with me. Sue in Moraira

The black, white and blonde of it!

THERE ARE two stories in one in this first item so count yourself lucky there’s no top up charge, and the first part goes something like this: Eight years ago Francis Rossi of Status Quo appeared on Coronation Street and during the shooting somebody from the business came up to him and said, “Would you like to make a movie?” Here we all are eight years on and the film is finally done and amazingly last week Francis confessed “I’ve still to see the finished result, I’m not really good at looking at me.”

It is called ‘Living on an Island – Bula Quo!’ and sees the two three chord trick maestros having a jolly up on an island in Fiji. It went on general release last Tuesday and I fancy it might be a good way to while away a couple of hours with a dash of your fave tipple on the side.

The second tale is a lot more bizarre: fellow guitarist and swishing blonde hair-man Rick Parfitt hurt himself during

the filming, so to be on the safe side they got in a stunt double for the next scene they were due to shoot. I’ll let Parfitt take it up from here: “I’d hurt my leg doing some stunts, so we got this stunt double in and he’s a black guy with a blond wig on!” … No word of a lie … that’s what he said!

“We thought … how the hell are they going to film a black guy playing me?”

Caesar Salad with Chicken and Avocado CAESAR SALAD originates from America and in this version I have added cold chicken, avocado and croutons to turn it into a main meal. The secret is in the dressing – and even if you think you don’t like anchovies, you must give it a try. You should be able to buy ready prepared croutons, but there’s a recipe at the end.

• 1 large chicken breast, cooked and torn into bite size pieces • A handful of croutons • 2 little gem lettuces, leaves separated • I small avocado, peeled and cut into chunks For the dressing • 1 small garlic clove crushed • 1 tsp white wine vinegar • 2 tsp lemon juice • 1 tsp Worcester sauce • 4 tbls olive oil • 1 tsp prepared Dijon mustard • A little black pepper • 4 anchovy fillets, finely chopped • 1 tbls mayonnaise • 50g parmesan cheese, finely grated

1. Whisk or shake together all the ingredients for the dressing, reserving half the parmesan cheese. This should give a pouring consistency, but if the dressing is too stiff, add a little milk.

2. Place the lettuce leaves, avocado and croutons in a large bowl. Pour the dressing over the top and toss the salad before transferring to serving plates.

3. Sprinkle the remaining parmesan over the salad and arrange the chicken

pieces on top.

For croutons, cut two thick slices of dayold bread into cubes. Toss in 2–3 tbls of olive oil, place on a baking tray and bake at 180 °C for about 15 minutes until crisp and golden.

Serves: 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes.

Torrevieja’s very own Beer

By Keith Nicol ‘COMEDUS’ IS a very special Torrevieja shop, which specialises in typical, regional food products as well as quality wines. As part of their first anniversary celebrations, they wanted to launch a special product related to their activity that had to do with both gastronomy and Torrevieja. And thus, taking the sculpture of the figure of ‘La Bella Lola’, as their inspiration, they have come up with a unique, naturally produced beer, appropriately named ‘La Rubia Lola’.

The new lager has a hint of cream in its flavour and will be available at quality restaurants, cafes, hotels and selected outlets around Torrevieja. The beer is produced locally in a new microbrewery setting and is the first of a new line of beers that COMEDUS has lined up for the future.

The unique ‘La Rubia Lola’ is just one of more than 150 bottled beers they have on their shelves, with a further 650 in their catalogue of beers from all around the world, including, for you Simpson’s TV show fans; Duff Beer!

Without trying to sound like an advertorial for their shop, the uniqueness of this new beer is seen by the Municipal Council as yet another selling point for the City of Torrevieja and their first anniversary was attended by Torrevieja’s Councillor of Commerce Agustina Esteve, who said that the beer was perfect for visitors to return home with, as a gift for friends, and also to be used as a promotional tool for the City of Salt.

COMEDUS is located in Calle Union Musical Torrevejense, No. 17, not far from the Palacio de la Mùsica. The beer had a quiet launch in the presence of Agustina Esteve, Director of the Foreign Residents Office Graham Knight and members of the Pres last week, while it’s official public launch will take place tonight, at about 8.30pm, on the Paseo de la Libertad, beside the sculpture of the ‘La Bella Lola’ from which they have taken their inspiration. La Bella Lola takes her name from the habanera of the same name, and so it also coincidental to note that Friday July 12th is also the night of habanera on the beach, which takes place just a couple of hundred yards away, later in the evening at 10.30pm.

The importance of a hearing check up HEARING PROBLEMS affect about 25% of the population over 55 years old. Although more common among the elderly, they can affect people of any age. A timely and regular hearing check up is the best strategy to maintain our quality of life.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN CAUSES OF HEARING PROBLEMS? The main cause of hearing loss is presbycusis, ie progressive hearing loss that occurs with age. It usually occurs in both ears, and first affects the high frequencies and gradually to the mid and low. It is a condition as common as gradual loss of vision, however it’s less recognised and not given the importance it deserves.

Another increasingly important cause of hearing problems is noise pollution. According to WHO, Spain is the second noisiest country in the world after Japan. Hearing impairment may also result from chronic otitis, side effects of some medications and certain diseases.

Hearing problems hinder communication with the family and social environment and can lead to the person concerned feeling isolated and confined. It is important to identify hearing loss as it occurs, helping solutions be more effective.

DETECTION, DIAGNOSIS AND SOLUTIONS FOR HEARING PROBLEMS Initial symptoms can include not fully understanding words, speech in meetings, or group conversations in noisy situations or on the phone.

Setting the volume on the TV and radio higher than normal is also a common symptom. As soon as a hearing problem is suspected, usually the doctor will refer you to a Hearing Centre for an audiologist to check your level of hearing by audiometry, or you can go along to a hearing centre independently and get your hearing checked.

WHAT IS A HEARING CHECK UP? Audiometry is a simple but complete revision to evaluate the ability of a person’s hearing. After gathering as much information about the patient, otoscopy is performed to verify that there are no earwax, internal inflammations, oozing or perforations. Then audiometry is practiced to determine the patient’s hearing threshold, bone audiometry to measure hearing ability of the inner ear, verbal audiometry to assess the ability to distinguish between sounds of a word and finally , a measure of the patient’s maximum tolerance to loud sounds.

Learn about your eyes with the Lions

By Keith Nicol THE TORREVIEJA Costa Lions Club Lions are stepping up their collection of used spectacles, which they deliver to the Lions spectacle recycling centre near Alicante. To date thanks to the customers, management and staff of Specsavers in Torrevieja, the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club have now donated over 8,000 pairs of spectacles.

Specsavers continue to support the Lions by encouraging their customers to drop off their old spectacles at the store.

From there the Lions uplift and pack the spectacles for onward delivery to the spectacles recycling centre, where they are cleaned, graded and prepared for transportation to countries where eye care is either very poor or non existent. Although the centre distributes around 80,000 pairs of spectacles per annum, it is possible to track them to their destination and last year it was discovered that a young boy in Madagscar was the recipient of a pair of spectacles that had been prepared in the Alicante recycling centre. The quality of life of the boy has improved dramatically as he can now see for the very first time: a simple thing that most take for granted.

Everyone should have their eyes tested every 2 years, so when you get your new pair of Spectacles, the Lions encourage you to please drop off your old pairs at Specsavers in Torrevieja. This year, their goal is for 10,000 pairs!

Quesada Golf Club supports Help At Home Costa Blanca

By Keith Nicol HELP AT Home Costa Blanca has become a lifeline to dozens of families throughout the Costa Blanca and beyond, who otherwise would be unable to cope in looking after family members in need. Last week, Alan Venables, the captain of Euro Golf Society, which is based at Quesada Golf Club, donated a cheque for 1,126€ to Joan Waddington and Jacky Jones from the Quesada branch of Help At Home Costa Blanca to enable them to continue their invaluable work those with long term needs.

The Golf Society raised the money through a variety of events throughout the year but mainly through holding auctions at their luncheons. “This amount is staggering” said Joan. “I knew they were raising money on our behalf but I never expected it to be this amount.” Joan gave the members a short talk explaining the free help the charitable group provides to people in their homes when they are sick or have just come out of hospital.

Not resting on their laurels, the Euro Golf Society continue their fund raising efforts and a few days later presented HAH with yet another cheque, this time for 586.50€, bring the total to 1,712.50 euros.

I did workshops with Leonard Orr and Sondra Ray who were both wonderful healers of the time, and taught me so very much. It was my first chance to heal people, and if they had been stoned out of their minds for ten years or more then the therapies had to be strong, they had to work, and they had to be given by someone who could take it all in, and send it back with the love of natural soul therapy. I was grateful for the experience and never looked back in terms of using my own power. Slowly the drug culture blended very nicely into natural healing with real love activated by the heart and the soul. Aromatherapy and Shiatsu and Rebirthing and Reflexology all took their natural place, turning Hippies on the edge of paranoia into self healing gurus themselves. Ancient arts were important because they seemed so right at the time, and the funky subculture Hippies that had moved to the North Bay shore now knew what they had really come to do; opening healing centres and meditation clinics and wholefood stores. When the funky slowly came to a quite natural end then the naturally spiritual took over to heal and soothe and to bring natural highs and greater body awareness.

THE WAY our golf courses are managed here in our part of Spain has for many of us been a mystery that we are unable to solve. Many seem to think that they have to have a large turnover of golfers to make a profit, others see the way forward to be to charge higher than normal because their golf course is better than all the rest in the area. I will not say one or the other is correct but what I will say is that one of the first things I learned in business years ago is and always will be very true.

I started in business at sixteen years of age with the help of the man who would five years later become my father-in-law. His motto was always; “If it is not making you money don’t do it.” That is one of the most important things anyone could think of when running any sort of business. It will be something that many of our golf courses would do well to take heed of as they struggle to cope with the diminishing numbers of golfers attracted to our golf courses.

In an effort to please golfers some golf courses seem to think that the only thing that matters is that the turnover remains high and the cash flow constant. The need for constant cash flow has been brought about by bad management which saw golfers

overcharged over many years and then undercharged at times so that the golf courses had not been taking enough money to pay the bills.

In recent years, several times I have been notified by staff at golf courses that their employers have been unable to pay them because of a cash flow problem.

Payments to suppliers always come first at the moment as employees cannot find work elsewhere so will not be able to leave their jobs to find alternative employment - so late wage payments are not seen as a real problem by some.

Low green fees are all well and good but to have green fees that are not covering overheads is just plain stupid. Now I know I have often said the grass will grow anyway and will need to be cut no matter how many play the course but the damage a large number of golfers do to a course is considerable so there has to be a balance struck. That is the hard part - finding the balance between profit and loss; the most basic business strategy.

So we golfers have to decide if we want to play golf courses that are in good condition with stable management or those that are slightly cheaper and in poor condition. Pay your money and take your choice

but if you go for the cheap option you cannot really complain about the golf course.

LAST TUESDAY, as part of our summer golf fun competitions, we challenged Alicante Golf in a pairs better ball competition. Three pairs beat the golf course in what proved to be a very tight competition indeed with just six points separating the whole field. This was thanks mainly to trying to make sure all pairs had similar handicap totals.

The top score of 41 Stableford points came in with Charlie Peter and Bob Smith who took top spot just ahead of three other groups all of who returned with 40 points: incredible scoring on such a challenging golf course in blustery conditions.

In fact one player asked if the flag was actually on the green on Hole 12 or in the water at the front.

He then produced a fantastic shot that should have produced the only two of the day. Sadly he lipped out and the twos pot went unclaimed yet again despite the best efforts of all who played.

Our members have requested we play different formats of golf through summer and we will always accommodate their wishes if at all possible so we will be playing different games each week dependent upon the numbers playing.

Meanwhile, Torrevieja have made their most significant appointment of the new season with the introduction of their new boss at the Vicente Garcia this term; Anselmo Serrano Carmona.

Carmona coached Almoradi last season and took them into the play off matches for promotion to division three. Along with Torrevieja’s Director of Football, he has been busy contacting and talking with the players that he wants for his team this coming season. He expects there to be plenty from the 2012/13 squad, but is also keen to bring some exciting new talent to the town.

Each year a few international players have featured in pre-season matches and 2013/14 is no exception. Next week, Corey Watts, a young hopeful from the UK, has been invited to pre-season training to see if he can gain a place in this year’s outfit. He is travelling from his base in Majorca to join the lads in their first session, which will be on Tuesday 16th July at the Nelson Mandela Stadium.

Commercial Director Kevin Green is also busy talking with UK based players, to gauge their interest in possibly joining the club. Meanwhile, tickets are on sale for the ‘Motion on the Ocean’ Football Cruise, which will take place on Thursday 18th July on the Sunshine Sunset Party Boat, setting sail at 8.30pm and returning at 11.00pm from the Tabarca Boat dock, in the main harbour area. THE COMPETITION this week was the Memorial match, the venue being the Embalse de Blanca.

On arrival the water level was about a foot lower than normal. This is due, we believe, to the fact that the dam at one end is a hydro-electric dam and uses the water overnight to drive the turbines. Then, during the day it fills back up again.

The venue as always looked the ‘real deal’ but then, it always does. The water fished very well for Blanca, but poor by other venues’ standings! Neil, who won, had three good fish in the first hour, ‘a miracle to behold’. There were, after saying all that, several blanks so the venue never ‘lets you down’.

when the water was down at least a foot. There was no flow on the water and it was absolutely alive with Terrapins from the size of dinner plate’s right down to the size of an old penny.

All the pegs are now being managed with each fishing club tending and keeping clear of rubbish their six allotted pegs. All anglers please appreciate the work that is being done by taking your litter home with you. As is usual there were still complaints from some Anglers that their peg on the day had not been cleared enough. The problem is the people who do the moaning never seem to be about when the work is being done!
