Murcia’s 1-1-2 receives nearly 900,000 calls

MURCIA’S EMERGENCY telephone number 112 has resulted in emergency services responding to 300,621 incidents thus far this year, between 1st January and 15th October. The Emergency Coordination Centre 112 Murcia, received a total of 886,700 calls. The majority of them related to health and medical emergencies, with 179 758 calls: 46,970 regarding public safety and civil protection; 35,660 for information; 18,174 also attended traffic incidents and road safety matters; 7,558 for fire and rescue and 12,501 cases of gender violence regarding battered women.

In much the same manner as the 999 service is set up for the UK and Ireland, the phone service provides free care and appropriate response times to calls made by citizens in emergency situations, responds to requests for assistance in emergency situations for health, fire and rescue, public safety and civil protection.

Phone users gave the emergency only number with a 8.99 satisfaction rating, which has established itself as a benchmark in the region.

Similarly, 94 percent of the citizens of the region are aware of the existence and role of the single emergency telephone number, which is especially popular for those up to the age of 65.

History made at Moors and Christians HISTORY WAS made within a historical setting last week as for the very first time, two British expatriates were given the honour of leading the parades as part of the Moors and Christians celebrations.

by Keith Nicol The Christian troupe AlmogĂĄvares, were led by British Captain Christopher John Davidson as part of the celebration of the 801st anniversary of the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa.

Along with music and dancing, marching and parading, the highlight of the night took place with the arrival of Captain and Queen for 2013, Christopher John Davidson and Linda Moore, two English friends who have lived in Elche for more than ten years, who have had smaller and more restrained roles in the proceeding until this year.

Chris and Linda walked the long journey through the crowds, looking visibly moved to the applause of an audience that completely filled the streets to the Plaza of the Constitution. History was made as they were the first non-Spanish to lead the processions and with their involvement, more members of the international community took part in the parades, further integrating the British community with our Spanish hosts.

Associations Day this Sunday THE FIFTH Associations Day will take place in Torrevieja Sunday 20th October.

Located in the Marquee on Paseo Vista Alegre, directly in front of the Tourism Office and on the other side, the Casino, more than 50 self-help groups, NGO’s, social, sports and cultural associations will be attending, to answer questions, and if you have time to spare, possibly volunteer your time or find a new hobby.

Mayor Eduardo Dolon and representatives of the Council will officially open the fair at around 11.00am on Sunday morning and in excess of five thousand people are expected to attend, based on the previous numbers, which has seen the event grow, year by year.

Entrance is completely free and festivities are expected to start winding down late afternoon, early evening. At some point during the proceedings an Associations Photo is also expected to be taken, a group shot to celebrate the almost 200 official associations in the city.

Register on the ‘Padron’ A NEW drive by provincial government, the Diputacion de Alicante, hopes to get more expats to register on the ‘Padron’ and able to exercise a vote in next year’s European elections.

by Jack Troughton The ballot for the European Parliament takes place on 25th May 2014 and the Department of Foreign Citizens at the Diputacion has organised a series of meetings across the Costa Blanca.

The campaign, ‘Municipal Register and the 2014 European Parliament Elections’, is aimed at informing everyone how to cast a vote in the election in Spain.

The objective is to explain how to register on the ‘Padron’ – and the benefits of joining the town hall register – how to vote, and answer any questions.

SPECIALIST The sessions are one hour long and will be conducted by people with specialised knowledge of the procedures involved with translators.

And there are two leaflets to accompany the campaign ‘Municipal Register (Padron Mu-

nicipal)’ and ‘Elections to the European Parliament’. They are available in five languages – Spanish, English, German, French and Dutch – and will be distributed at the meetings. In addition the information is available online at www.ciudadanosextranjeros.es The meetings in English are being held at: Rojales on 22nd October at 11am in the Agencia Comarcal de Rojales; Javea on 24th October at 6pm in the Casa de Cultura; Benissa on 29th October at 11am at Calle La Purisman 5759; Torrevieja on 5th November at 10.30am in the Centro Municipal de Ocio.

Smokers under fire

SMOKERS ARE coming under fire as a result of a time and motion study by the Mutual Society for Work-related Injuries in corroboration with pharmaceutical company Pfizer. The study showed that smokers’ cigarette breaks in the workplace can cost the company up to 2,000€ each year, based on up to four breaks each day, assessed as equating to half an hour of lost work daily.

Plane collides with pylon A 72-YEAR-OLD man was seriously injured on Tuesday when the plane he was piloting collided with an electricity pylon at around 11.25am, forcing him to make an emergency landing on a public road in Mutxamel.

The plane’s undercarriage made contact with power lines close to the pylon. The English pilot suffered several fractures and

was admitted to the University Hospital of Sant Joan d’Alacant. The accident occurred just a short distance from several private residences. Members of the local police and fire service have been commended for their prompt action in recovering the pilot from the wreckage and administering first response medical attention.

Still time to be the next Salt Queen

by Keith Nicol THE SEARCH for Torrevieja’s next Salt Queen is on with the filing deadline for candidates ending on November 6th. Interested parties can register at the Cultural Department Offices, situated on the third floor of the Municipal Theatre.

The Salt Queen is a position of honour and participants and the winning queen and her ladies in waiting will represent Torrevieja at many local and regional events, being an example of character and customs of the City of Salt.

Participants must either have been born in Torrevieja or registered on the Padron for at least five years. Minimum age is 17 and the maximum 25 years. All applications must have three photos, head shot, three quarters and full length plus a photocopy of their DNI or NIE. Finalists will also spend a weekend with the judges at a local hotel, being interviewed and performing to camera, prior to the main event, which takes place in the Municipal Theatre.

Rock ‘n’ Roll and Custom Bikes

THE FIRST Torrevieja Sixties Rock’n’Roll and custom bike day happens tomorrow, 19th October.

The location is the Restaurant Jose Luis Grill, Urb Los Angeles, which many will know as the former Restaurante El Paraíso in Plaza de los Halcones, 27, in Aguas Neuvas. The fun event will feature a display of custom bikes, local motorcycle clubs, classic cars plus music and engines to blow your ears off.

The event starts at noon and continues until the roar of the engines stop. It features music from the 1960’s, DJ’s, paella, BBQ and lots of beer, stands and stalls, a Tattoo Parlour and Live music until you drop. Orihuela two day employment Tool Box ORIHUELA EXTENDED a helping hand to the unemployed in the area this week with a two day job hunting workshop entitled ‘Tool Box’, providing advice on job seeking to job hunters of all ages. Representatives from all job sectors attended and over the two days a number of middle-aged job seekers took part as well as youngsters. Also represented were a number of universities and colleges giving advice on how to secure employment through further education. 38 institutions included security forces; business associations; trade unions and NGOs, working together to trim down the unemployment statistics.

Security forces take over Los Alcazares beach

by Keith Nicol A TRAINING exercise came as a complete surprise to many local Los Alcazares residents last week, as hundreds of security force agents along with cars and bikes from the Guardia Civil plus the local police, ambulances, one fire truck and an inebriation simulator took over the beach!

While enjoy their coffees on the seafront, locals watched on as security and emergency personal got down to business and performed a full on training exercise to raise awareness of what they do to the general public.

It was an opportunity for children and adults to see behind the scenes and enjoy the little secrets normally kept away from prying eyes, inside ambulances, police and fire trucks as well as instructors providing information about the operation of the different services and vehicles.

Civil Protection Councillor Gloria Adán highlighted the great work the local authorities do, both professional service personal and trained volunteers from the Protection Civil and noted that they often “risk their lives by offering a service to the public and even though that’s their job, not everyone has the courage to do this work”

THIS SATURDAY and Sunday, Los Alcazares is hosting the V Trials for the King’s Powerboat Cup. This exciting spectacle features the very quick and exciting ‘Rallyjet’ craft and takes place on October 19th and 20th from Playa de la Concha, offshore, around the area of the airbase.

The competition is organised by the Spanish Powerboat Federation, Powerboat Federation of Murcia and Los Alcazares Department of Sports. This is the third edition held in the Mediterranean waters of Los Alcazares and it’s expected to attract the participation of many ‘pilots’ from all over Spain, in the different categories. The weekend will also feature food and drink areas, stalls, kids activities such as inflatable castles plus sports exhibitions. It’s free to watch the activities that are planned to start mid-morning on Saturday.

Republic of Ireland to scrap air tax

by Keith Nicol FLIGHTS TO Ireland from San Javier and Alicante from the big three budget airlines, Ryanair, Easyjet and Jet2, could see a reduction in prices for 2014. The Republic of Ireland is to scrap its small 3€ per passenger tax next April. However, politicians and business groups in Northern Ireland have reservations that this will have an adverse impact on their airports.

SOME AMBITIOUS thieves have been arrested in Seville after stealing a helicopter! The helicopter is of the type used by the Guardia Civil and police believe it was intended for drug trafficking. It was stolen from a building in the province of Cordoba Hinojosa del Duque and moved to Seville before the thieves were apprehended.

A sad farewell to Maria de Villota THE FORMULA One fraternity is in mourning for 33-year-old test driver Maria de Villota. Maria lost her right eye as a result of a horrific crash while testing for the Marrusia team at Duxford Aerofrome last July. Last Friday, she was found dead in her hotel room in Seville at around 6am, having suffered heart failure linked to her injuries. The family has confirmed that Maria will be laid to rest in a private ceremony in Madrid. Her book entitled ‘Life is a Gift’ was due to be launched this week. Formula One drivers paid their respects to Maria with a minute’s silence on Sunday before the start of the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka.

Vote campaign reaches Poland

by Jack Troughton THE BATTLE to win expats a vote beyond 15 years after they leave the UK has reached Poland – home to 30,000 British people. Margaret Hales, a direct relative of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, travelled from the Costa Blanca to meet members of the expat community in Warsaw as a guest of Professor Tim Clapham, a teacher at the city’s university.

The professor has struggled for years to get the British community in the capital to accept the UK Government deserts them after 15 years. “Most Brits here stay for only a few years working for the retail industry as legal experts and in insurance. They go back long before the British Government cuts them off,” he said.

“Those of us who stay here are stranded by the British Parliament, unable to make the vote that, for me, determines my pension and the life of my family in the UK.” Margaret, who lives in Benitachell, left Warsaw in temperatures of -2C and a frost, said of the 320 registered British pensioners living in Poland “At least they will get the Winter Fuel Allowance!”

Rajoy: sharing the burden SPANISH PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy, interviewed by the Austrian newspaper ‘Kurier’ during the Madrid visit of the President of Austria, Heinz Fischer, said of the Spanish economy: “I am aware that we demand sacrifices of our citizens, but we are careful to share the burden fairly.” He said that the situation in Spain was “improving” and radical measures have “paid off,” adding that a reform of the pension system was a work in progress. When questioned about alleged PP corruption he sidestepped the issue by saying, “In the economic crisis many Spanish turned their attention to scandal – the behaviour of a few should not question the work of serious politicians.”

Breast Cancer awareness day

by Keith Nicol SATURDAY AND SUNDAY will feature a couple of Cancer awareness campaigns in Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa.

The major event of the weekend takes place at Zenia Blvd with Maria and her Pink Ladies, on international breast cancer day, where they will be raising funds by selling helium filled pink balloons to the public and then releasing them all together, in similar fashion to 2012.

Unlike some other local charity events, Maria wished to assure the public that all of the proceeds go directly to the AECC for research and their early detection programme. By purchasing a balloon you also have the chance of winning a prize as there is a gift of 100€ to the purchaser of the balloon that travels the furthest and is returned by the finder, who will also receive 20€ for sending the balloon back. A full day of live entertainment is provided by some of the best live entertainers on the Costa Blanca including Paul Micheal, Dan Davy Kyle Jaymes, Suzy G, Soul Power, Richie Alexander, Rhionne, Ashley Tweddle, Nikki G, Incognito, Abba Elite, Rob Bonovox, The Jazz Singer, Raquel Pena’s Flamenco for all, The Matrix Rock Choir, The Kingsbury dance academy and much more. The True Heroes Charity, which helps heroes injured fighting in Afghanistan, is to hold a raffle at the October Dance and Dine Show on 26th October.

Reaching out for volunteers

By Keith Micol REACH OUT, Torrevieja’s charity for the poor and homeless will soon be opening their new charity shop in calle Dona Sinforosa in Torrevieja and are looking for Volunteers to work in the shop. Reach Out is the city’s newest registered NGO Charity and in less than two years, they are really making a difference in the community.

At present they have a drop-in centre and adjoining charity shop, which is located at Calle Bella Antonia 1-Local 5, just beside the Friday Market and off Plaza Havana but with their ultimate goal to build or acquire a centre where the homeless can spend the night, or time until they can find accommodation, their new charity shop is another way for them to build up valuable cash reserves.

At present their Charity shop is open Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10.00am until 2.00pm but hours for the new centre will depend upon the commitment of new volunteers and numbers of them! However it is planned to only open mornings and so if you want to help a great cause and can spare a morning of your time to work in the new shop. 42.3 million foreigners visit Spain

by Keith Nicol TOURISM OFFICES and accommodation boomed in Torrevieja, Benidorm and along the Costa Calida during a hot August however in the capital, Madrid, it was another story. Figures just released note that between January and August 2013, arrivals of foreign tourists was up 4.5 percent year-on-year to a record level of 42.3 million international tourist arrivals.

August, was the best month on record for foreign tourists with 8.3 million arriving, in what traditionally is the month when Madrid’s population leave the steamy capital and head for the coast or the countryside. That’s a rise of 7.1 percent year-on-year, in part due to a noted 9 percent increase in French visitors to 1.8 million in August, with costal regions all reporting increased numbers of French arrivals.

Not surprisingly, the new wave of Russian visitors also rose, in part due to extended efforts of the Costa Blanca Tourism Board, who recently have been exhibiting in St. Petersburg promoting the region. Russians accounted for a 30 percent rise so far this year to 1.1 million, though the British still rule the numbers game with more than 10 million visits already this year.

A lack of flights to Madrid has been blamed for the slump in tourism numbers to the capital, which dropped 22 per cent over last year to 290,500 in August, with an eight month total of 2.76 million, a 7.7 per cent drop on 2012.

The Spanish airport authority AENA doubled airport taxes in Madrid, with Ryanair cutting its capacity by 35 per cent and EasyJet by 20 per cent. Following its merger with British Airways, Iberia also cancelled dozens of routes. For the first time, Barcelona became Spain’s busiest airport for August, according to data from the Airports Council International.

Love, rice pudding and sweet wine TORREVIEJA’S OLDEST resident Josefina Blanco has celebrated her 107th birthday. Josefina is one of the oldest people in Spain and also in Europe but looks nowhere near her age! And despite needing a little help to dress every morning, Josefina is still leading a happy and healthy life, spoiled by an army of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She says her secret is, “Plenty of love, ride pudding and sweet wine.”

Quite a performance LAST SATURDAY we went to the Cultural Centre in Torrevieja to watch a performance featuring various groups from Asia. We paid for our tickets online and were looking forward a special evening of entertainment.

It turned out to be a special evening to be sure but not how we had expected.

Shortly after finding a suitable seat to enjoy the performance a person came and sat right behind us and started performing. Within ten minutes into the performance he began talking on his mobile even though patrons are requested not to use phones during the performance.

I turned and gave him an incredulous stare but he was totally indifferent to anyone but himself and was quite indignant that we wanted to enjoy the performance we had paid for, instead of paying to listen to him perform.

We noticed other people were also becoming incensed by his insensitive behaviour. And wouldn’t you know it, five minutes before the performance finished, he finished yapping on his phone.

We shall remember that evening’s performance, particularly the performance of the man behind us on his mobile phone. One has to marvel how grown-ups like him act like spoilt children.

Next time, I will stay at home and watch the telly.

I JUST wanted to put pen to paper to praise a ‘Brit’ business, as you hear so much about being ripped off and bad service by the Brits. I was recently diagnosed with cancer and the inevitable hair loss started to follow. I went to my hairdressers, The Cut in Jalon, owned by Danny and Leslie, and got him to shave my head. He also provided me with a temporary wig and refused to take any payment. When I bought a wig to use and took it to him to trim he would again take no payment for trimming the wig to suit my face shape. I would like to say a big thank you and they deserve to have a successful business.

The English language

WE ALL know that the English Language is rich in collective nouns to distinguish between different groups of animals: a herd of horses, cows or elephants; a school of fish, etc...

Less known, even for many natives of Shakespeare’s Language, are: a ‘pride’ of lions, an ‘exaltation’ of doves, and supposedly because they’re so wise, a ‘parliament’ of owls. However, until recently I never knew the anthropomorphic term for a group of baboons. I know that they are the noisiest, most stubborn, least intelligent and most dangerous of all the primates.

And what is the collective noun in English for this group? A ‘Congress’ of baboons - what we Americans now have representing us in Washington DC! PS: My deepest apologies to our less harmful and hairier ape cousins.

ON FRIDAY, 27th September my partner and I attended a charity ball at Camping International La Marina in aid of The Butterfly Children. I’m writing because I am surprised that no write up about the function has appeared in any of the English free papers so far. It was an excellent evening from the champagne reception, tasty food charmingly and efficiently served through to the MC and the entertainment by Bella Luna –always well worth seeing.

Port improvements in Alicante

THE PORT of Alicante is to build a parking lot for 500 vehicles and also a large restaurant to improve facilities for cruise liners. This week the board of the Port Authority awarded the company Costa Blanca Port SL the management of the cruise terminal of Alicante for the next 15 years. The complex will host events and provide shopping and entertainment facilities, to be completed within the next two years.

PILGRIMAGE Steelworker Andrei Maikov has chosen to make Benidorm an annual pilgrimage for his young family. He told RTN: “We first came here two years ago. Our winters at home are harsh - the children miss playing outdoors and enjoying sport after school.

Coming here is a wonderful opportunity for them to play on the beach all day, enjoy the fantastic fresh food served in Benidorm restaurants and really unwind before facing our Russian November and December!”

We asked Andrei if he thought any improvements might be made to make his stay more enjoyable. He answered: “Perhaps – if you could move Benidorm to Magnitogorsk! Or perhaps next year we could buy a holiday home and move Magnitogorsk to Benidorm!

I SHOULD’VE paid the extra pound for that lottery ticket last week...

Oh well, upwards and onwards, and judging by the amount of extra work that has been generated at my place of employment by staff shortages, I’ll soon make up the five million that I lost by not buying a Lotto ticket last Saturday with overtime alone.

Not that I’ve really had time to do much overtime as life seems to be running at double-speed in Wattsworld. Sunday before last it was a Midlands to Southampton dash to check up on my ageing parents in their new assisted-living flat or OFH (Old Folks Home) as dad calls it. There are still plenty of boxes to unpack and dad was due a small operation this week but slowly they’re getting things sorted and acclimatising to the changes in their lives.

Meanwhile, my daughter wanted me to visit her down in Pevensey Bay. She had some news that just wasn’t for the telephone. So another dash down south this weekend and the revelation that a new grandchild was due in the new year. Just as I took this news in my son requested an audience (sounds grand don’t it?) and, blow me down, at the grand ole age of thirtytwo he is finally going to be a dad! 2014 is building up to be a busy year.

Anyway, all of this dashing down south has taken

its toll on my ageing Toyota Rav and this week it decided to give up the ghost and pack up. “Oh gawd,” thought I, “it’s nearly four miles to work.” So, sans car, I’ve been having to get up at the crack of dawn to use my new and, until recently, hardly used Raleigh bicycle. Boy, should I have bought that lottery ticket...

And just to add to the mix of dashing around the country and overtime at work, poor old Dottie, the mad Jack Russell that I sort of inherited, decided to have a stroke and needed to be transported to the vets. It was, sadly, a one way trip and getting used to not having Dottie trip-trotting around the house has been really hard.

Just to liven things up a bit more the radio station I used to work for has asked if I want to do a week’s worth of afternoon shows at the end of the month. What? Does the Pope wear a tall hat? Being a sucker for radio (it’s my favourite medium) I could not refuse. So, I need to get the car fixed to travel down to Sussex - which, of course, means more overtime.

I should definitely have bought that Lotto ticket.

Or maybe I should place a bet on my future grandson playing football for England, eh? It worked for that chap in Wales didn’t it?

Benidorm ER back again…

FOLLOWING THE success of the Channel 5 documentary series “Benidorm ER” another series was commissioned and has already been filmed earlier in the year.

by Irena Bodnarec THE SERIES follows unfortunate Brits when they end up in “Costa Casualty” – the private Hospital Clinica Benidorm in the Old Town as they swap sun-bed for a hospital bed!

With more than one million Brits heading to Benidorm every year, the documentary series follows the medical teams as they cope with a wide range of Brits abroad - from children to pensioners, Stags & Hens who have over-done the revelling and ex-pats who have escaped the rat race and are living the dream.

The 8 man film crew have been at the hospital since April and series 3 is ready to be aired – the first episode is scheduled for Thursday 24th October broadcasting at 8pm GMT, 9pm Spanish time.

There are 3 teams which work in pairs, scattered around the hospital with one permanently stationed at the Emergency department, waiting for any ambulances to arrive. However, they don’t rush up with their camera’s when they see the doors of the ambulance opening! Once the

patient is stabilized they approach either them or their relatives and ask whether they would like to take part in the documentary.

Another camera crew are upstairs following cases that have been admitted for scheduled procedures and document their progress.

In previous episodes the team followed expat residents Christine Climent, owner of Benidorm Palace and performer Karen Ravenscroft, better known as Kinky Karen. The crew follow patients and their families, doctors and nurses, ambulance crew and translators in their day to day duties giving the audience a real insight into what goes on behind the scenes.

Series Producer Lou Cowmeadow contacted RTN to ask us if there are any resident ex-pats which have ongoing medical issues at the hospital and would like to appear in the fourth series – which they are currently filming and due to be broadcast mid 2014. Terminator visits Valley of the Fallen ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER made a surprise appearance at the Valley of the Fallen last Friday. In Spain to present the Reebok Spartan Race in Madrid, the super star and former governor of California toured the Valley of the Fallen with a large group of friends and without announcing his visit beforehand. Schwarzenegger was impressed with the grandeur of the monument and expressed deep interest in the information provided on the Spanish Civil War.

READERS OFTEN ask why their lemon tree is disappointing.

This week we will look at some common problems.

Decide which variety to plant, taking the following into account: The microclimate of the garden - lemon trees are not as frost hardy as orange, mandarin and grapefruit trees Whether they will be planted in the ground or a container eyesore; a short tree from which one can harvest all lemons without the need for a step ladder; or an open or tight hedge of lemon trees: each option requires different pruning Are you resident most of the year? If you are, we would suggest one of the perpetual varieties so that fresh ripe ecologically grown lemons can be enjoyed all the year round, plus the almost continuous aroma of lemon blossom.

VARIETIES OF LEMON TREES GROWN IN SPAIN *Indicates perpetual flowering/fruiting varieties: Berna/Verna, Fino, Lisbon, Luna*, Cuatro estaciones*, Eureka*.

In addition to the above varieties there is also the Citrus Medica Sarcodactyli, which we grow in a container as a novelty. Its strangely-shaped fruit resembles a half open, clenched fist hence its common name: ‘Hand of Buddha’, also

known as ‘Hand of Allah’ in Spain and possibly Morocco.

If you have wisely planted a young one or two year old perpetually flowering and fruiting variety, the following pruning pattern is recommended: For the first two years just remove low-growing brachesto, enabling a thickening trunk to develop and any suckers from the root ball to which the chosen variety grafted. Do not prune the young framework of upper branches unless a branch is broken.

After two years choose from two or four strongest branches that will form the basic framework for a mature tree.

Remove other main branches by pruning cleanly with sharp secateurs or a sharpened wide chisel and wooden mallet.

From the third year, trim back fruited twigs to the first healthy leaf as soon as you have harvested the fruit.

In early spring, remove most ingrowing growth.

In Spring and summer, trim back the tallest and widest growing branches to develop the shape and size you want and stimulate flowering side shoots.

Prune off any growth seriously affected by the Citrus Leaf Miner which causes curling leaves with holes in them and the hardening of the wood of young branches. An occasional ecological neem oil spray will help control and a monthly

spray if trees are infected. Mix in propolis and you will remove and control sooty leaf attacks.

Remove any fast growing water shoots as they appear.

If your tree is likely to be exposed to frosts do not feed in the autumn or prune during the winter If you experience severe frost damage cut back affected branches to unaffected sappy growth in the spring after the risk of frost is past. A nettle infusión spray or a commercial eco foliar feed will help the tree recover.

Should you have a large tree, do main pruning in the spring before or just after flowering. Also trim lemon hedges at this time. If you want a large tree they can grow to ten metres high and twenty metres diameter.

Despite pruning correctly many owners experience a stunting and even dying back of the lemon tree after a few years. The most common cause is that the tree was poorly planted, especially if the tree was in a tall, narrow plastic sleeve container when purchased at a nursery, squashing the roots together, letting them intertwine in the form of a corkscrew.

If you plant a young tree, prepare a good planting hole and plant in friable soil enriched with composted manures rather than just sliding the roots and soil from the sleeve into a narrow planting hole and then feeding with granular chemical fertilisers.

With care from day one there is no reason why lemon trees cannot grow into specimen trees that survive for many decades.

Disclosure of tax information FOR THOSE of you who thought the Asset Declaration was just a Spanish thing and that there was no need to worry about disclosing your assets if they were held offshore think again: ITALY, GERMANY and France have followed suit and automatic disclosure of tax information between all EU countries, the US and what were once considered offshore tax havens has started.

Last Thursday the Isle of Man has become the first British Crown Dependency to sign an agreement with the UK extending the automatic disclosure of tax information.

This intergovernmental agreement, first announced in December last year, is based on the requirements of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) introduced by the United States to ensure that its citizens reported and paid tax on all international assets.

The agreement will result in a broad range of information on the investments being shared automatically with the UK by the IoM tax authorities.

“The agreement is the latest of several automatic information exchange agreements entered into by the IoM and the UK Government, intended to improve its ability to tackle cross-border tax evasion.”

The Isle of Man had already committed to automatically sharing information on personal savings income with the UK and other European Union countries following the EU Savings Directive of 2009.

An IoM tax disclosure facility with the UK was also opened in April this year under which UK resident individuals, companies and trustees can make a voluntary disclosure to come clean on undisclosed assets and income from the IoM which have not previously shown on their UK tax returns.

The UK government has stated that it will look to sign further Agreements with other jurisdictions as part of their commitment to combat tax evasion. The Crown Dependency Guernsey has similarly announced its intentions of extending a FATCA-style tax disclosure agreement with the UK, while Jersey is also consulting on a similar model, but so far the IoM is the only dependency to have signed off on such an agreement. The British Overseas Territories (the Cayman Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Anguilla, Turks and Caicos Islands, Montserrat and Gibraltar) are expected to enter into automatic tax information exchange agreements with the UK. So if you hold accounts in any of these jurisdictions, and haven´t disclosed them to your tax authority including HMRC it’s time to look at these and make them as tax compliant as possible.

CONSULTATION: I am English, and my husband is becoming increasingly less capable due to age and illness. Can he prepare a Power of Attorney to be used in Spain that would enable me to act on his behalf if needed?

Dear reader, Thank you for your consultation.

In the UK, as far as we understand, it is no longer possible to create an Enduring Power of Attorney (‘EPA’), as it has been replaced by two types of Lasting Power of Attorney (‘LPA’), one to cover assets and financial affairs and the other to cover personal welfare.

There is no an exact equivalent of these

in Spain, although a Spanish Power of Attorney (POA) can be signed to deal with the issue of incapacity.

As we have said in previous articles regarding the Spanish Power of Attorneys, the following must be considered: 1.- The POA ceases to have effect upon death, so once the grantor or donor of the POA passes away, it cannot be used any more, as the Spanish Power of Attorneys dies with him. Therefore the POA can not be used to deal with the inheritance of its grantor.

2.- Normally the POA will be automatically revoked in the event of the donor losing capacity, although a special POA can be granted that would continue to be valid

even in that scenario.

We encourage all clients, especially the expat community in Spain, of any age, to review their affairs so that appropriate documentation can be prepared in a calm and non pressured environment.

A Spanish POA can be drafted so that it only commences to have effect in the event of incapacity or, alternatively, an ordinary POA can be drafted so that it is not revoked by any subsequent incapacity.

Ideally everyone should sign such a POA as it is relatively quick to prepare, inexpensive, and can then be confined to the bottom drawer in the hope it will never be needed.

HAVING LIVED in Spain for a few years now I find it increasingly difficult to decide how to respond - of course, the context is all important. If I am in a bar talking to someone new then I would probably reply, ‘Coventry, England’ as the place where I last lived. If I am in another part of Spain I would probably say ‘Torrevieja’ as where I live now. If I was in England I would probably say ‘Bradford’ as the place where I grew up.

It can be complicated, but at least I am clear that wherever I may have been in the past, I am a resident here in Spain now. I have the fiscal and civil paper work to prove it. It is perhaps easier for me because I only visit the UK on odd occasions. For some people, defining whether they are a resident or non-resident in Spain is a little more complicated.

Or at least they think it is. However, the actual law

for deciding which category you fall into is really quite straight forward. If you live in Spain for more than 183 days in one calendar year then this is where you are resident. The 183 days need not be consecutive, so crossing the border for a day does not exclude you from resident status. In any other country you visit or spend time in you are a ‘nonresident’ or ‘tourist’.

NON-RESIDENT OR RESIDENT – IT’S IMPORTANT! Whether you are defined as resident or non-resident does make a big difference in Spanish tax and law.

You have an extra tax to pay on your property as a non-resident and the cost of inheritance tax changes dramatically. It also makes a difference to your bank account and it is very important that you make sure your account reflects your status.

Some of the differences might work in your favour

and some against. If you are a resident, inheritance tax can be less and you don’t have imputed income tax to pay unless you have a second property. If you are a non-resident then you won’t be chased for other forms of taxation linked to earnings. Both residents and non-residents have to make tax declarations but they are at different times of the year. The resident declaration, as you would expect, is far more complicated and residents are required to present the notorious 720 form for world-wide assets.

Not paying your taxes as either a resident or a nonresident incurs penalties and interest. If you haven’t made your status clear and checked what you must pay then you can find that you have fallen foul of the tax man without even realising. By all means, ‘um’ and ‘ah’ about where you come from but make sure you are clear about where you live now.

Testing time for Testosterone Boy WHEN YOU are 22 years of age your levels of testosterone are flying somewhere up in the stratosphere.

Some of you will know what I mean, and for those of you who are getting there, hold on to your hollyhocks, it’s an experience like no other.

The subject of today’s top story is 22-year-old Ed Sheerin, an English singer and songwriter who recently took on the job of advisor to Christina Aguilera on The Voice USA. Ed has wowed the American public with his simple lyrics and delightfully melodic toons, and when they love you over the pond, man do they love you.

However, that nasty old testosterone I’m talking about reared its ugly head for our Ed in quite some spectacular fashion.

Recalling his very first meeting with Christina Ed said to The Sun ”I went in and she was wearing this really, really tight white top without a bra and I’m a 22-year-old boy trying to be professional as hell, so I walk in there and my eyes just keep slowly going down…”

Gospel truth! That’s exactly as he said it! Young Ed then covered his comments well when he added, “Then I kind of realise what I’m doing and my eyes go up again, so like yeah, I’m young - what can I say?” Every word, again, exactly as he said them!

Fortunately for Testosterone Boy he’s come out of it pretty well as when Christina was interviewed by online paper Extra! She made no reference to ‘the incident’ and instead said how she would love to work with him in the studio, “I would love to collaborate with this guy, he’s super talented, everyone is dying when they first see this guy too!”

IF YOU visit this page fairly regularly you will know how much I detest greedy people, especially greedy wealthy people. It’s mainly to do with when celebs use their personality, (dubious in most cases) to score a deal with an equally greedy group of peeps collectively known as The Corporates. Will Ferrell is one such individual who got involved with car manufacturer Dodge to introduce their new model Durango to the expectant public. Will is a very funny guy with ‘Anchorman’ and ‘Anchorman 2’ both becoming huge hits at the box office. Can you see where this is going now? If you know of the films you will know that Will plays bungling news anchorman Ron Burgandy in the movies and yep! You got it! … He’s doing the commercial as the Burgandy character and instead of shots of coupés morphing into tigers and/or swimming the channel, Ron, I mean Will, goes on about the Durango car’s less remarkable features, including “the glove box, which comes with ‘0.1 cubic feet of storage … a 12 volt light bulb … comfortably fits two turkey sandwiches, or a 70 packs of gum’.” It would be great if peeps were put off by the way the commercial is presented to them, but the chances are it’ll turn out to be a sneakily good move by lads ‘n lassies in Dodge’s marketing department.

Might’ve worked if Del Boy had done it!

MOST OF you will know that Miley Cyrus has gone mega lately on the back of some pretty raunchy items that include doing stuff live on stage with Robin Thicke that’s unprintable! On the back of all this ‘publicity’ Miley has now been offered the chance to make a film … a porno film! For a million dollars! ...

I have long since struggled with the personality of Strictly´s Vanessa Feltz, but when I read that she said to Closer magazine:

“There’s me in my Spanx, 38DDs slightly drooping out of a greyish bra, and seeing former Bond girl Fiona Fullerton, five years my senior, trim and svelte,” I started to well up … honest … I did!

Completing an all-female lineup in today’s Celeb Clips is Jennifer Saunders, who has now categorically stated that a movie version of the Ab Fab is no longer on the cards. Jennifer told Glamour magazine: “It’ll never happen, Ab Fab is in such a nice place now – if we made the film there would be such a danger that we could ruin it.” Couldn´t agree more … what TV comedy has transferred to the big screen? … None!

Delta Chrome HI AUNTY: My default browser Google Chrome has somehow been replaced by Delta Chrome.

How do I go about returning to Google Chrome? Regards, Barrie.

Aunty says: ‘Delta’ or ‘Delta search’ is an adware software usually installed by either installing free software which it is bundled with, or you have clicked on an advert for it. It has basically ‘taken over’ your Google Chrome.

First you need to uninstall delta search from your PC: • Windows XP: Go to Start> Control Panel> Add Remove programs> Look for Delta Chrome Toolbar, Delta toolbar, Yontoo, BrowserProtect and Mixi.DJ from your computer and uninstall these.

• Windows 7/Vista: Go to Start> Control panel> Uninstall a program/Programs and Features> Look for Delta Chrome Toolbar, Delta toolbar, Yontoo, BrowserProtect and Mixi.DJ from your computer and uninstall these.

‘X’ mark.

And then update your antivirus and perform a full scan.

And then install update and run antimalwarebytes http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Malwarebytes-AntiMalware/1186760019/1 and perform a full scan.

After that, restart your PC and Delta search and www.delta-search.com homepage should disappear.

Next you need to remove Delta from Chrome and reset your Chrome Homepage and Chrome Search engines.

1. Click on Chrome menu button. Go to Tools (the three horizontal bars), Settings, Extensions.

In the Extensions page, please click on the Recycle Bin button to remove Delta Toolbar (and Delta Chrome Toolbar, Delta toolbar, Yontoo, BrowserProtect and Mixi.DJ ) from the list.

1) Regularly, when I am typing a blank page or an email I cannot print the letters ‘T’ or ‘Y’ -both lower and upper case. It is most annoying as I just have to keep pressing lightly on the key until it starts to print!

2) When I am typing an email, before I have finished the text it sends itself either to the draft box or actually sends it to the recipient. Puppets and cribs: a visit to the museums of Albaida

THE MOORS knew Albaida as ‘la blanca’, because of the colour of the earth in the area. Their former presence there is obvious in the way that it is with most small towns, by the tiny, sinuous alleyways of the old town. But anyone who wants an entertaining day out doesn’t need to follow those Moorish byways because the four gems that make Albaida worth a visit are all within a few seconds walk of each other, just off the Plaça Major.

When you enter the Plaça you are confronted by the majestic façade of the Palacio de los Milà i Aragó. Building began somewhere between 1471 and 1477 around what was the original entrance to the town, the Porta de la Vila, completed in 1460. Like many of these grand palaces it was an ongoing building process, with 16th and 17th Century refinements added along the way (including Baroque paintings by the local artist, Bertomeo Albert at the end of the 17th Century). There are various rooms to visit in the Palace, including the private apartments of the Marques who gave the building its name.

Pass through its 15th Century arch and you enter the Plaça de la Vila, a delightful square with slatted benches shaded by Mandarin trees, where you can take a few moments rest.

To your right as you go through the Palacio archway and housed in the Palacio itself is the Museo Internacional de Titelles d’Albaida, a puppet museum unique in Spain.

Historic and modern examples of the puppeteer’s art have been brought from around the world, covering the decades from 1900-1970, with a separate floor devoted solely to Spanish and Valencian puppets. Amongst the elegant Japanese, Indonesian and African puppets you find Sesame Street characters glowering at you, and Mr Punch whacking Mrs Judy, still having family disputes over the baby after 350 years (they originated in 1652 and are now facing a comeback in the UK where they have been seen as highly unpolitically correct for most of the last decade). The museum is the home of the annual International Puppet Fair.

On the other side of the arch is the Museo de Betlenes, a museum devoted to the cribs (belenes) that are a major part of the Christmas celebrations throughout Spain and can range in size from a shoe-box display to a huge production that can fill a village square. It also houses a model of how Albaida looked in the 15th Century.

In front of the museum is the Iglesia Arciprestal de Santa Maria, built during the 16th and 17th Centuries, behind whose double-arched doors and plain exterior are splendid altar paintings by Albaida’s most famous son, José Segrelles. To learn more about the life of this distinguished artist, cross the square to the pretty Casa Museu José Segrelles, a charming modenista building where the artist lived from its completion in 1940 to his death in 1969 at the age of 84. It is said he died with a brush in his hand having that very day completed a huge religious painting.

The house was designed by Segrelles himself and has been kept very much the same as when he lived there, including the library with 11,000 volumes. (Given his enormous work output you wonder if he ever got time to read any!) On display throughout the house are his paintings, demonstrating the extraordinary range of his work, and many of the original illustrations he did for books by such famous authors as Blasco Ibañez and Edgar Allen Poe, and for magazines such as the American Weekly and Illustrated London News when he lived in New York and London.

Patronal Fiestas attract thousands

By Keith Nicol THE PATRONAL Fiestas in Pilar de la Horadada have proved to be a non stop, fun event for residents and visitors alike. Over the last three weeks, events have included a paella contest, the flashmob and concerts that have brought together thousands of all nationalities.

Mayor of José Fidel Ros said that “The festivities of Pilar de la Horadada are attracting thousands of people daily to the municipality, which has had a positive impact on the local economy.”

Councillor for Fiestas, Asunción Sánchez , stated that “it is very gratifying to see how a giant paella for a thousand people managed to fill the tent of guests, plus all the clubs who made their own paella” to which he added that “the flashmob was hilarious and I enjoyed watching the connection between the 22 clubs that participated in it, because that is the essence of the holidays; to share unforgettable moments with neighbours and friends.” The flashmob was organised by dance instructor Gertrude Andreo, who managed to coordinate hundreds of participants.

The festival program is designed around religious festivals in honour of the patron saint of the town, the Virgen del Pilar, and offered activities for all ages including the usual paella contest, costume party, the Grand Prix Interpeñas and the twinning of the municipality plus parties and concerts, the highlight being Melendi in concert.

Tomorrow, Friday October 19th features Floats Parade at 8.00pm. Tonight’s parade includes participation from peñas, associations, dance schools and marching bands, all of them showing their floats and costumes while they parade along main street down to Calle San Juan. The awards for the floats will be given on Monday the 21st of October at 9.00 pm at the Cultural Centre. On Sunday there is a Bobbin Lace-Making session and Petanque Championship in Avda. Camilo José Cela. The evening fun event is Jousting and a race with ponies and horses takes place along the Rambla (Riverbed) from 5.00 ‘til 7.30pm.

Life recipe Spaghetti with Camembert, Serrano Ham and Pesto THIS IS a truly international dish with French camembert, Spanish jamon serrano and Italian pesto. The result is a wonderful, fresh tasting pasta that has become a regular standby in our house. You could use a ready-made pesto if you want, but if you can find fresh basil, it’s well worth the effort of making your own.

• Enough dried spaghetti for two people • 75g camembert cheese, cut into 1cm cubes • 4 thin slices of serrano ham, cut into 1cm strips • 25g parmesan shavings For the pesto • a handful of fresh basil leaves • 1 clove of garlic, peeled • 25g parmesan cheese, finely grated • A small handful of pine nuts • 3-4 tbls olive oil

2. Cook the spaghetti in plenty of boiling salted water until just cooked. Drain and return to the pan with a little olive oil. Add the pesto, camembert and serrano, stir and cover with a lid then leave to stand for a minute or so until the cheese begins to melt.

AS WELL as the standard hearing aids we discussed in our last two Hearing Columns, there are a variety of non-standard aids to suit different circumstances.

SAMARITANS IN Spain (SIS) operates under license from Samaritans UK. Volunteers are trained to exacting standards and represent a diverse range of ages and experiences, offering support to English-speaking people with emotional and personal issues, regardless of their nationality, any time, day or night.

The tea is available through the Helpline 24 hours a day to listen to your concerns and worries. No problem is too small or too large.

If you need practical support then SIS will endeavour to help you reach a solution and find support from other agencies in your area.

Your call will be treated with total confidentiality and honesty and most importantly, you will not be judged or told what to do. SIS does not advise but helps you to reach your own conclusions and decision by talking.

So don’t suffer alone: Pick up the phone or email SIS, day or night.

You talk: we listen.

THE NON-conventional-aid wearer may be motivated either by the desire to hide the fact that they are wearing aids or by another existing handicap that prevents them from wearing aids (e.g. visual impairment, dexterity problems or skin conditions). The best known are the spectacle aids. These are hearing aids built into spectacle arms. They come in two main types: conductive loss aids and sensorineural loss aids.

The conductive loss aids are for people who have suffered damage to the outer or middle ear and are severely deaf. The hearing aid is built into the spectacle arms which are springloaded and clamp themselves to the sides of the head, playing the sound through the bone.

The sensorineural loss spectacle aids are for people with inner hair cell damage. Again, the aids have been built into the arms of the spectacles but a small, thin, discreet wire with a receiver on the end of it goes from the spectacle arm into the ear and delivers hearing in this way.

The downsides of both these aids are: a) the arms are very ‘chunky’ and b) when you take your glasses off you lose your hearing as well.

Some people have to suffer loss of sight as well as hearing. For the blind/visually impaired with a hearing problem quite often it is the simple things like changing the battery or cleaning the aids that cause difficulties. There are specially adapted, self-recharging in-the-ear aids that do not require cleaning and that sit in a box overnight and recharge themselves so never need a battery change or a wax-trap change – wonderful for those with sight or dexterity problems.

Other people may suffer from skin complaints that standard hearing aids exacerbate. There is a range of special hypoallergenic aids (some even gold-coated) that can help eliminate these problems.

Many people are very self-conscious about wearing hearing aids, especially children and teenagers. This problem can be tackled

either by making the aids very small so they cannot be seen or disguising them to look like something else entirely. Some of the people walking down the street with iPods, mobile phone receivers, spectacles or large earrings to name but a few are actually wearing hearing aids and nobody knows!

Life horoscopes The Lunar Eclipse starts the week off with a bang and finds you in a calm collected mood despite the dynamics of events in the Cosmos. Much energy centres on the home at this time, and any changes or plans that you anticipate are subject to immediate planning and research. The start of something new and long awaited follows shortly.

Venus is stubbornly awaiting instructions in Sagittarius, and this brings timbre and emotion into a heartfelt affair of the soul. Loves comes to you in many ways, but above all you have finally found that you need someone to watch over you. This doesn’t make you needy, but it sends a message that you deserve what you ask for!

Some things are best kept a secret, and yet around you right now there is a mystery that you have chosen to unravel.

This doesn’t mean that you have to make any changes, but it does tell you to leave things well alone and to deal with anything when the right time comes, and not before. Time is of the essence as Mercury retrogrades.

As Jupiter moves comfortably nearer and the Mercury retrograde takes on Scorpio there comes a time for changes. These will appear across the board, and their implementation will do so much to lighten your load just now. Prepare yourself for ticking off that long list of wants and needs and start too to see things going your way.

Balance needs to be maintained if you are to move on without making unnecessary work for yourself. With a lunar eclipse and a sustained retrograde of Mercury it is hard to see where your loyalties lie especially as you now really do have to choose sides. Sweeping things under the carpet cannot be a way forward but it is the way that others will cope with this ongoing situation. Indecision is brought about by a nagging Mars and an indecisive and malingering Scorpio.

Beguiled somewhat by the dreamy Piscean take on of Neptune you are not to be so easily fooled. It is extraordinary to know that someone is lying to you, but those who are economical with the truth only really fool themselves. Being open and challenging is the right way to treat the situation, fighting fire with fire for the good of all!

With both the entry of the Sun exalting Scorpio, and the remnants of the Mercury retrograde and its fallout this week, there comes mixed emotion and a silence about what is not being done, and should be. You have to allow for the reverse thrust of a wily Mercury making up for lost time, but you are to make hay while the Autumnal sun shines on.

Venus brings a touch of loving nostalgia to an ongoing matter and urges you to err on the side of caution. Everyone seems to be unable to express themselves right now, but things have to be resolved if there is to be any future reveal and resolution. Your conscious control and non judgmental energies can really be put to good use here.

Shielded by forensic energies of Pluto it will do you good to take some much needed time for yourself, if only to enjoy some healthy rest and relaxation. You have got the wrong end of the stick, and now have the difficult job of finding a way to show your remorse through support and apology. Come what may

LOSING A partner, the death of a parent, serious illnesses of loved ones are so unbelievably hard to cope with. Memories are very hard to live on, and we all think we are going to go on for ever and nobody can do that. Often just at a time when we need to have the strongest connection with Spirit, our faith falters and we fail to get the full support that we really do need. Just as we were given life so too we are handed the death that is inevitable. Born dying is so true a phrase. We do not know thankfully how many years we have as we enter into a lottery of life that should have us living for each day we are given. Some us may know what is around the corner, but here fear does nothing to help, and we should live for whatever is out there for us. This won’t be for ever, and our DNA is often pre programmed with the eventual cause of our death; just as our psyche determines the blueprint of our spiritual journey here on Earth and may record our departure if it is seen.

My own feelings of death didn’t really kick in until I was forty, the big 4O as they call it. Up until then I was invincible and strong, pain free and could theoretically live forever.

After this I began to live life in a different way. There was no fear but there was reality, and policeman did start to look younger. As I filled in online forms on my computer there was a need to scroll down back to 1954 to ascertain the year of my birth. One birthday I got a CD of the top ten in the year of my birth…..now there is no top ten to talk of. The answers in Quiz games became easier and I began to lose my hair.

Recently in London someone gave their seat up for me on the Tube. This was such a shock, since it never happens, but the greying of my hair does bring some dividends, I guess.

If it’s your birthday this week

One thing very sure is that Spirit is there for the journey, and never ever leaves us, though we may leave them in times of difficulty and stress and trauma; just when we feel that things have gone against our destiny, usually. It is easy to be able to get angry when something terrible blocks us along the pathway, and we lose faith, mainly because it is easy to feel sorry for ourselves. Shock and grief and trauma can cause a separation from the guiding energies of Spirit and lead us to a point whereby faith goes out of the window or leads us up the garden path. When we have seen and practised resolution and resolve we can take a step on the pathway once more, but only when we are ready to do so, it is very much under our own conscious control. It is very important that we know how to pick ourselves up whenever we fall, and it is inspiring to know that the love brought to us by Spirit does not falter in the negativity of our sorrow and pain and our wallowing in self pity. Spirit is non judgmental, and we are each treated as the great individuals that we are….always and forever.

There are many who greatly fear dying of course. Even the inevitable brings surprise. I have so much yet to achieve that I sincerely wish to be able to experience what I need to in the rest of my time here on Earth, and I hope that I can.

Death and life have connected with me since my birth.

As twins my brother and I came on the scene at just under seven months. I have lived for fifty nine years, but my brother had just thirty eight minutes of life before he was pronounced dead. I went through times when I mourned the death of my flesh and blood, but that fateful day someone chose that I would live and that he would die. I am so thankful for my years whatever they have brought me, and for what is yet to come my way!

Kenny, I get shivers down both of my arms when I enter the room that was my daughter’s before her tragic death seven years ago. It is a recent thing. After her death I left it as she had it, but in moving on I made changes and now use it as a workroom for my arts and crafts. Just suddenly I get the shivers. Is it Jo saying hallo? Amy A. Amy, I am glad you moved on, and it seems as if Jo is happy that you use her room. Many would have left her room to be a shrine and it is far better that you use this room to work with your creative streak. I feel that the shivers are Jo saying how proud she is of you, and to tell you that she is moving on too. She is proud of your achievements and her way of coming through to you is probably at happy times when you have completed something, or to spur you on when you need to feel someone is there for you. This loving communication is something special between a loving daughter and her gifted Mother……….a spiritual dialogue as Jo sees all is well with you, and seeing to it that love never really dies.

Forget the same old same old, and any need to re-invent yourself.

This year brings you time to get your head down and benefit from the expertise you seem to want to hold back on. You are best prepared when you are truly ready to bring it all on…. just make it sooner than later!

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Step by Step Spanish -53 Compound verb tenses (4)

WE TEND to think of verbs as single words like “go” “come” “speak” – “ir” “venir” “hablar”.

HOWEVER, OVER the last few weeks we have been looking at how other words are added to these “main” verbs to expand the way we can use them. Examples in English are “I have gone” or “he has spoken”. We can also add two extra words “We will have come” and so on. We call these extra verbs “auxiliary verbs” as they “help” us to do more with the main verb.

In Spanish the principle auxiliary verb is “haber”, and we have already looked at a few examples. There is another verb which, although it doesn’t officially appear in the verb books as an auxiliary, is also combined with main verbs to expand their meaning.

This verb is “estar”.

The most common example of a compound verb form with “estar” is when we say things like this: “Estoy hablando

con mi amigo” (I am speaking to my friend); “Los niños están jugando en el parque” (The children are playing in the park). I call this the “present action” tense, but it is also called the “present continuous” tense. It refers to things that are occurring at the present moment or within a present temporary time scale.

Another example is “Estoy aprendiendo español” (I’m learning Spanish) although in this case the temporary time period can be extended indefinitely!

If we change the tense of “estar” it is also possible to change the overall tense of the verb, but this does lead to some duplication. Amongst the many ways we can talk about the past, we can say “estaba hablando con mi amigo” (I was speaking to my friend) and “Los niños

estaban jugando en el parque” (The children were playing in the park). This form is very close in meaning to the past continuous “hablaba con mi amigo” and “los niños jugaban en el parque”.

Sometimes I think the Spanish just have too many verb tenses for their own good.

The difference between these two is fairly minimal; although as English speakers we tend to find the compound tense easier as it is closer to our own compound form “I was speaking …” etc.

Other tense changes with “estar” are technically possible but need to be treated with care. “Estaría hablando” (I would be speaking) is basically the same as “hablaría” (I would speak). You may also hear “estuve hablando”. I think we’ll leave it there, if that’s okay with you.

Nice Jumper THIS IS a book of how the author became a teenage golf professional.

APART FROM playing golf in his youth, Tom Cox writes books, he also likes cats. I don’t play golf but two out of three isn’t bad, so I decided to give the book a go.

Many years ago, I had occasion to spend some days at Wentworth Golf Course in Surrey and I was amazed to find myself in surroundings where everyone wore funny trousers with a glove hanging out of the back pocket and spoke in an upmarket slang about such things as woods, irons, Tour Editions, and a strange affliction called ‘wrist cock’.

Tom Cox is funnier.

The book is a laugh a minute as Tom and his teenage golfing pals terrorise the middle class inhabitants of the ‘Lego’ houses adjoining the course (not Wentworth) while improving their handicap, holding the club captain in awe, and looking down on the green staff, who replaced their divots without a murmur.

Does England Really Expect?

So England are now on the road to Rio and I was actually pretty impressed by their display (particularly in the first half) on Tuesday night. They played some really good stuff at times. But will that be the case when the tournament rolls around? Probably not! For years now, general consensus has been that England continue to under-perform and that their style and level of play simply isn’t good enough, but I’m not sure that The Three Lions have ever been THAT good anyway have they?

The media of course always hark back to 1966 when England ruled the world, playing exciting and spellbinding football but, if you dig a little deeper, and read a few match reports from that victory over Germany, they didn’t actually play that well! They were pragmatic and solid but not especially thrilling.

In the subsequent 47 years, I can think of only maybe half a dozen games where they’ve played really good, exciting football against a decent side and won.

So there’s no point in ever hoping that it’s going to happen regularly, let alone next summer! There’s just no precedent for it!

The best England game I’ve ever seen was easily the 5-1 defeat of Germany. They were very good for the whole 90 minutes. Even Heskey scored! But it was a blip. By the next game everything was back to normal; a sluggish two nil home win over Albania, the second goal coming in the 88th minute. That’s the real England.

So everyone needs to be realistic in their expectations.

For what it’s worth, in my opinion, only when fans, players, manager and media really embrace being dull and pragmatic, and demand nothing more than being dull and pragmatic, and are not at all bothered by being dull and pragmatic, that England will have any chance of being successful...and even then, you know full well that they won’t be - it’s England!

AS WE were preparing the driving range at Alicante Golf last weekend for our Callaway Demo Day I was involved with a very interesting conversation with another professional who was on holiday from England. We got around to talking about his experiences of hosting a demo day at his club and how he constantly saw golfers playing with shafts that are not only too heavy for them but also too stiff in flex. In some ways I was pleased to hear this because I have had very similar experiences myself. I told myself that as much as possible throughout that day I would hide the shaft flex from the golfers testing the latest Callaway golf clubs and had a very interesting day indeed.

One of my first customers of the day was a man from Sweden who was six feet three inches tall and was a typical well-built Scandinavian who was undoubtedly an experienced golf playing with a handicap of 8. His request was to try an iron with a steel stiff shaft to match the ones he had in his old irons. Having prepared for the day we had covered the flex markings with coloured tape for easy identification, to make it faster to choose the clubs we wanted. What happened next amazed the golfer who found he was hitting his chosen iron style 7 iron further that his old 6 iron.

Thankfully he was so impressed he bought the clubs we recommended for him but with a shaft now matching his swing speed perfectly. Before completing the sale I showed the golfer that he was fitted to a regular 75 gram shaft instead of the 110 gram shaft he was using. The look on his face was priceless and he went and hit the clubs again and agreed that it was his ego that had made him choose the stiff shaft because he felt he was strong. He was certainly playing golf in a state of misinformation given to him in the past.

The river was up but just flowing with a reasonable colour. However, looks can be deceiving as we found out… There were only 3-4 swims that fished with everybody else struggling to make a few kilos. Why? Who knows?

Only the fish! But again it brings you down to earth thinking you have the method and bait and it all goes belly up. Fish were caught on all baits along the whole stretch of river!

This lake must be the hardest place to fish in Spain, considering its size and that it is being fed by a river it still fishes very patchy, and there does not seem to be any small fish except for the Bleak and they were absent in some pegs.

Most of the fish are coming to Corn Maggot and Hemp, Ian Dalzell once again showing his fishing expertise using Hemp on the feeder to win the match.

Road Test - Honda Civic THERE ARE two diesel engines available on the new Honda Civic: the 2.2 and the 1.6.

I can’t speak for the former but the latter is so economical that I cover 300 miles on barely quarter of a tank.

Honda claims that its 1.6-litre iDTEC will return 78mpg: I experience around 60mpg encompassing all manner of driving from stopping and starting in the slowest of traffic jams through to fast and demanding motorway cruising.

This latest example (the ninth generation) of the Civic builds on the futuristic theme and enhances the parts that the original hinted at but didn’t carry off as well such as its rear, which features bulbous lights while the triangular exhausts have disappeared as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. I thought I would miss these but the whole package is more aesthetically pleasing.

The concealed handles for the rear doors make this five-door seem like a three, especially to my wife when she first tried to get our children in the back. It’s a nice touch and one that seems to have been copied by other manufacturers. The rear windscreen is still an annoyance for me because of the position of the spoiler which effectively cuts the screen in two and hinders vision when inside.

But it’s a great driver’s car with body hugging ‘magic’ seats.

My family and I demand much from our striking red protégé because we go away for a long weekend and while it is not large enough for our tandem pushchair, it copes with a suitcase, my daughter’s Trunki, a single pushchair, a crib, a bouncer and a box of food as well as my daughters in their two car seats. Despite being weighed down the driving experience is good.

The economy figures I mentioned earlier are reached with a combination of automatic engine stop/start and the use of a green economy button to the right of the steering wheel. While engaged progress is noticeably a little lethargic on occasions disengaging this does speed up the process. But once the Civic is on its way progress is satisfying and with the correct gears there’s an element of gusto. The gearbox is a little notchy but it can be forgiven this for its decisiveness.

The Civic is a tricky car to reverse and on occasions it can be difficult to gauge whether there are any obstructions behind, so it is helpful that some models are fitted with reversing sensors; unfortunately this model does not have them.

Equipped with all the usual refinement the air conditioning is an absolute blessing during the height of our British summer where temperatures exceed 25 degrees Celsius. It’s true. And so the lo setting keeps us all extremely happy.
