By Keith Nicol THE LADYBIRDS end of summer ball was held recently at the Real Campoamor Golf Club Restaurant. More than 130 guests attended the ball. Raffle prizes were donated by many local businesses which raised over 800€ and the total amount for the evening was 1,292€.

Since February 2013, The Ladybirds have raised 7,148€ for their chosen charity, which is The Felix Mantilla Skin Cancer Foundation in Barcelona. Their fund raising will continue with their ladies lunches that are held on the first Friday of the month, with the next monthly meal at La Piazza La Fuente on Friday the 1st November, meeting at 1:30pm to eat at 2.00pm. FOREIGN TRAVELLERS staying in hotels in the Murcia region increased by 17.1 percent in September, representing the highest increase by regions in Spain. Hotels in the region recorded a two percent rise over the same period in September 2012, reaching a figure of 102,102 passengers, according to data released this week by the National Statistics Institute. In the whole of Spain, the number of Hotel stays increased by 1.3 percent over the previous year.

The increase in foreign travellers to Murcia was up 17.1 percent over the previous year (up by 1.8 percent in Spain), which is the highest increase for Spanish communities for September.

The average stay of hotel travellers was for 2.6 days, up 1.2 percent over 2012 for a total of 269,364 overnight stays in the Community.

Hotel nights in the region grew strongly through international visitors, 34 percent (up 3 percent in Spain in total), to the point of Murcia showing the highest increase by communities for September. However, domestic tourists decreased by 4.3 percent, down 0.2 percent throughout Spain.

The revenue per occupied room in hotel establishments in the region reached a value of 60.94 euros, an increase of 0.5 percent from 2012. As a result of this increase in average daily rate and occupancy rate increase in September, the revenue per available room (RevPAR) increased this month to stand at 29.16 euros, 1.94 euros, a rise of 7.2 percent, over September 2012.

Dolon sued by SpongeBob IN THE same week that former Torrevieja mayor Pedro Hernandez Mateo is sentenced to three years in prison, according to Informacion newspaper, the present Mayor has been threatened with court action for allowing SpongeBob to roam the streets of Torrevieja!

by Keith Nicol A LAW firm has initiated legal action against the city of Torrevieja for unauthorized use of the patented brand image and SpongeBob promotion campaign, as part of the Open Saturday’s marketing campaign! Even though SpongeBob has been happy in the past to sing and dance on the stage in Torrevieja, apparently his legal representatives were less than amused at him turning up, shaking hands with a few children but not getting paid for it!

A law firm, on behalf of the U.S. company Viacom International, Inc has issued the action, which more or less asks the council not to do so again! A client of this firm, the owner of the intellectual property rights of various trademark registrations enrolled in the Spanish Office of Patents and Trademarks said of SpongeBob that: “he was unpleasantly surprised” to see his image used in various in various media-including the municipal website, to see he was scheduled to meet and greet children, as part of the Open Saturday.

In addition to not using his image, the City should “immediately remove and destroy” any costumes or images of SpongeBob or any other characters in the TV Series, who might otherwise be resting at Bikini Bottom! You couldn’t make it up!

Vicious restaurant attack

FOUR HOODED men armed with knives and guns carried out a prolonged assault at 11.30pm on a restaurant on the CV-91 in the La Campaneta area of Orihuela on Monday, holding six customers, including five women, hostage for nearly an hour and a half.

The attackers raided the cash register, fruit machines and cigarette machines as

well as the personal effects of the customers and staff. The proprietor of the bar along with his father and brother were also viciously kicked and punched as well as several of the customers.

Police are investigating the incident and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Family of nine to holiday in Spain CHERYL PRUDHAM, a mother of nine in the news recently over the cost of her brood to the British taxpayer, is complaining about the cost of passport applications for her nine kids as she books a twoweek Spanish holiday for the entire family.

by Jan Gamm 31-year-old Mrs Prudham claims £38,000 per year in benefits: she and her husband Rob work 20 hours per week for just under £1,400 per month, topped up with £70 per week in working tax credits: their £123 per week rent is paid by the council and they receive £7,326 per year in child benefit as well as £400 per week in child tax credits – giving them in total £52,722 annually.

Mrs Prudham is asking the council for a larger house so she can have more children. She said this week: “I don’t care what taxpayers think. I am entitled to this trip. It will be our first ever holiday and I’ve worked my backside off to earn the deposit.”

FOR THOSE who fancy a challenging role, the Spanish Ambassador in London is seeking a new butler. Frederico Trillo, who has been the Spanish Ambassador in Britain since May 2012, is inviting applicants to take charge of his domestic staff and supervise his domestic affairs on a live-in basis. The successful candidate will be fluent in English, Spanish and one other language and be responsible directly to the ambassador. The salary on offer is £27,000 per annum. But be quick – CVs are required by the end of this week!

Mafia gang busted FOR THE first time, Spain has offered asylum to a woman who has been the victim of sexual exploitation. The Nigerian woman, the mother of a 3-year-old daughter, came to Spain in 2010 arriving by boat. The mafia gang responsible for trafficking her demanded 20,000€, to be settled via sexual activities until the debt was cleared. Instead, the woman approached the Red Cross for help and the information provided on her denuncia led to police making several arrests. It has emerged that the network forced several women and underage girls into back street abortions.

Threat to healthcare

NEW MOVES aimed at curbing NHS spending could cut health care provided to expats living in Spain claim worried residents.

They include axing UK support for people living in European Economic Area (EEA) countries after taking early retirement and slashing health spending on expat pensioners.

Britain’s Department of Health has put forward a series of money-saving proposals in a complex consultation document – but a European-based protest group is angry expats using the system have been left out.

It was only by “rare chance” campaign group Votes For Expat Brits discovered the existence of the document earlier this month.

It was issued in July – and the closing date for comments was at the end of August.

And it has triggered a storm of protest as the group maintains it is another example of why expats need representation in Westminster and a vote over the current 15 year rule.

The proposed steps are set out in a Government Green Paper: ‘Sustaining services, ensuring fairness - a consultation on migrant access and their financial contribution to NHS provision in England.’

At present people taking early retirement can receive UK funded healthcare for up to 30 months depending on National Insurance contributions – a useful buffer before reaching pensionable age or having to take out private insurance.

However, one proposal would scrap the ‘S1 European Health Form’ and with it this system of accessing healthcare.

Britain also pays for its pensioners living in Europe. Another cost-cutting proposal is to reduce this spending by 5% - but the Government will allow people to return to the UK for certain

‘planned’ treatment.

In 2011/12, Britain paid Spain 237 million Euros to Spain to cover its commitments under the European Health Insurance Card, which allows travels to receive emergency treatment, and those entitled to UK funded healthcare.

It included paying 4,267€ for every pensioner registered for healthcare, regardless of whether they saw a doctor or not - or received treatment worth hundreds of thousands.

This week new UK research revealed migrants, overseas visitors, and so-called ‘health tourists’ cost the NHS up to £2 billion a year – yet only 16% was clawed back. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has pledged to reduce this by £500 million a year.

Some £260 million was incurred by citizens of the EEA travelling to the UK and in theory the NHS is able to recoup these costs, and UK expats added another £94 million. Arguably expats are not ‘foreigners’.

Campaigner Peter Johnson, who lives in Zujar in Granada, said the health costs of UK pensioners in Europe was under scrutiny as the Government looked to make savings.

“This smacks of how crap we are at recovering costs from other EU countries, we don’t charge people who should be charged, so we will punish our state pensioners,” he told RTN. “It is the usual sledgehammer to crack a nut syndrome.

“This has all been caused by civil servants in the UK gold plating EU regulations with regard to healthcare, welfare and housing. As usual it will be the pensioners who will pay the price – albeit that the current generation of pensioners contributed the most in NI contributions.”

And he said all UK expats needed a voice. “I am passionate that we should have parliamentary representation via our own dedicated MPs, as the French, Italian and Greeks do, never mind keeping our vote beyond the 15 year rule.”

Margaret Hales, a leading member of the campaign who lives on the Costa Blanca, said the health Green Paper’s consultation period was during August, a time when people were on holiday.

“Was this just stupid or deliberate? Either way, we have yet again been excluded from any input. Perhaps we do not exist in their minds?” she said.

“It was only by chance that one of my colleagues found out about these proposals. Is that a way to run a consultation about proposals which will affect everyone of us?”

Margaret agreed a “sensible system” was needed for visitors to the UK and their right to healthcare but a government purporting to be open and accessible was denying those affected by proposals to make their case. “Hypocrisy reigns!”

And she concluded: “British citizens living abroad are ignored.

We have no-one to speak on our behalf. My colleagues have written to such public figures as Dennis Skinner and Boris Johnson and even the Queen in the hope of getting a voice in Parliament – or indeed in British society.”

Changes to DWP payments

by Jack Troughton EXPATS RECEIVING UK pensions and benefits may soon be asked by the department of Work and Pensions to confirm international bank details.

From 31st January next year, the DWP needs an International Bank Account Number (IBAN) and Bank Identification Code (BIC) to make payments to accounts in Spain and other Eurozone countries.

Under new EU regulations the changes are aimed at making p a y ments b e tween EU

countries faster and more secure.

Failure to supply details could put payments at risk.

However, expats will not be asked to provide any other personal details – such as passwords. Only the IBAN and BIC numbers are needed and they are readily available from bank account statements, cheque books, or the relevant bank branch.

The DWP already holds information for the majority of expats involved – those people whose details are not known will receive a letter asking for them.

EUROZONE And expats only need supply the additional information if they receive the payments into a Eurozone account outside the UK and receive a letter – those receiving money into a UK account are unaffected by the new regulations.

A spokesman for the British Embassy in Madrid said: “If you receive a letter, you should complete the attached form and return it to the DWP as soon as possible.

“A failure to do so may mean your payments will be stopped, because after 31st January 2014, banks in Eurozone countries will not accept any DWP direct payments without these details.”

The DWP is also reminding people who have changed address and have yet to inform the department to contact the International Pension centre in Newcastle-uponTyne on 0044 191 218 7777 to insure all their details are up to date.

Whoops!

SEEMED LIKED a good idea at the time! Beachgoers at Elche’s Arenales del Sol were entertained for several hours from around 11.30am on Tuesday watching the driver and passengers of a stranded Mitsubishi SUV attempting to rescue the vehicle from the waves after they had tried to use it to tow a small boat from the water. Despite efforts to push it out of the water, the car became mired in quicksand, sinking deeper by the minute and stubbornly refusing to budge. Five hours later at nearly 3pm two more SUVs came to the rescue and towed the car to safety.

Associations day in Torrevieja A RECORD 38 groups took part in Sunday’s Association day, setting a new precedent for the record number of participation of associations, organizations and local NGOs.

by Keith Nicol Along with thousands of visitors, Torrevieja Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the Deputy Provincial Tourism, Joaquín Albaladejo, and the Councillor for Citizen Participation, Agustina Esteve and other councillors, visited each and every stand and consumed a huge amount of ome backed goodies, that were thrust upon them!

Dolon stressed the importance of the International participation of associations, NGOs and local authorities this year, which has broken the record of participating entities. Inside the marquee tent on Paseo Vista Alegre, were promotional booths for 38 associations, NGOs and institutions, who presented their information brochures, articles and products related to their activities and annual work projects.

The main idea of this annual event continues to reinforce the line between the work performed by some of Torrevieja’s larger associations and to offer participants from the municipality an opportunity to promote their work projects and seek new members, thus helping the City Council to achieve its objectives of boosting harmony within the community.

Although there are almost 150 clubs who are legally registered with Torrevieja or/and Valencia, there are at least the same number again, who are not, and a new campaign to encourage them to fill in their paperwork, will soon be introduced.

Javea library finally in business JAVEA’S NEW Library and Social Centre, opened by mayor José Chulvi and Councillor for Sport and Culture Rafael Ripoll 15 days ago, has remained closed ever since due to the lack of a telephone line! Without an operating line, the building did not conform to safety regulations and of course had no database functions. Neither would the elevator work. The good news is that a line was finally connected on Tuesday evening and the library should be in business by the weekend.

The Costa Blanca recorded 51.9% occupancy for October THE HOT, sunny weather continues to attract tourists to the Costa Blanca with the regions hotels, Benidorm excluded, showing that they have achieved an average occupancy rate over the first fifteen days of October of 51.9 percent. This is two points more than last year, according to data released by Hosbec. By category: 4 star hotels have 60.5 percent, followed by 3 stars with 49.8 percent, 5 stars

with 41.7 percent and one and two stars showing a decent 41.6 percent occupancy in the first half of the month. Spanish tourists account for 45.1 percent, while foreigners are still making up the majority at this time of the year with 54.9 percent.

By nationality, the British account for 20.9 percent, the Nordic countries with 13.4 and the remainder mainly from Russians, Germans, Belgians,

French, Dutch and Swiss. Finestrat comes out top showing the best data recorded with 79.9 percent occupancy, while Alfas del Pi reaches 70.1 percent, Altea and Calpe are at 58% and 55.1%. The hotels South of Alicante registered at 34.5 percent in the first half of October 2013. The forecast for Hotel occupancy on the Costa Blanca (Benidorm excluded) for the second half of October 2013 is 44.3%.

UPyD call for Covera clarificatin

by Keith Nicol IT SEEMS that it’s not possible for more than a week to go by without some new activity happening when it comes to Corvera Airport. This week it was two fold, with Unions meeting at San Javier and demanding job security for their employees and the UPyD party calling on the Community and Development team to “clarify once and for all” when Corvera will be opening and the closing of San Javier!

UPyD Councillor for Community and Development Rafael Sanchez criticized the government for their “lack of transparency” and “opacity of the process” that they consider “Shocking” over the handling of Corvera Airport For Rafael Sanchez, the limited and often conflicting information regarding the closure of San Javier airport, the lack of a timetable for the realization of the alleged agreements and

commitments of development at both airports are showing a complete “lack of foresight” as there is no real need to have two airport infrastructure in the region, as well as the lack of coordination between the central and regional administrations, governed by PSOE and PP in times of construction “that showed their irresponsibility and allowed, knowing its impossibility, waiting millions of euros.” In that regard, he noted that it is incomprehensible that some investments as important as the 200 million guaranteed by the regional government to Corvera, or 65 million euros for the second runway at San Javier, plus another 10 million euros for the terminal, executed with the complete knowledge of Zapatero’s Socialist Government, knowing full well that two civil airports separated by 35 km was both a nonsense and a waste! “Both administrations have ignored the facts and continued to act as if there were no other options!”

Those who like to shop early can go to the ‘early bird’ fair at Salones Carrasco in Javea on Sunday 3rd November between 11am and 5pm.

And the Denia Marriott Hotel hosts the main event, the two-day bumper gift fair on Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December.

Organiser Lesley Clark was “absolutely

delighted” with the money raised 12 months ago - 773€ at Salones Carrasco and a bumper 3,239€ at the Marriott.

She told RTN: “It reminded me why I actually make the effort to organise these fairs every year to help these children.”

And Carole Saunders, President of friends of the children of EMAUS, said: “The money raised allowed us to spend over 4,000€ on gift tokens and toys for the children.

“Lesley’s hard work is much appreciated and by people just going to the gift fairs really helps us treat the kids at Christmas – it is so important we get attract as many people as possible to the events.”

Fever pitch

REHEARSALS ARE heating up for the upcoming Streetwise show Motown Soul Fever at the Auditorium de La Nucia tonight (Friday 25th October) and tomorrow (Saturday).

A 60 strong international cast of all ages are presenting a show that brings a golden era of music to the stage at 8pm on each night – show casing songs by the likes of the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes and many more. Director and choreographer Pascalle Bruens said her production team – costume designer Marianna van Hal, writer Tjeerd Geerts, and singing coach Diana Buckle – “has worked so hard on this production.”

Tickets are 12€ and Pascalle said a part of ticket revenue would be donated to the charity Valenciano de Solidaridad con Los Ninos. “They need help and for Streetwise this is children helping children.”

The Calendar Girls are coming!

LOS JUBILADOS are a group of jammers, retired mates who met up at Café Molino in Oliva a few years ago as learner guitarists.

After much practice they formed the group for the Javea Computer Club’s Christmas Party last year.

Tony Spike, Ian McKenzie, Howard Parker, Derek Bush and Bryan Wall play to raise money for their chosen charity, Javea Cancer Care: each of them, or close family members, have suffered from cancer in the past.

The group would like to thank everyone who has helped along the way, particularly Denis and Sue, for their introduction to Rebecca and Martin at Bar Poll, Rebeccas House, in Els Poblets, where every Wednesday night donations contribute to a

worthy cause – 1,001.35€ to date.

Enter at your own risk THE FIRST time we drove from the airport to Torrevieja was way back in 1993.

At that time the N332 was busy and there were drivers taking chances trying to pass slower traffic. Driving on the N332 at night was and still is particularly dangerous.

At that time Torrevieja had a population of less than 40,000 and as for Orihuela Costa - well, back then you could blink and miss it! Now fast forward to 2013 and Torrevieja’s population exceeds 105,000 and adjoining Orihuela Costa has a population of more than 33,000. Yet the N332 is still a two lane motorway from the airport to Guadamar and then bypassing Torrevieja it is still two lanes due to out-dated overpasses.

The traffic on the N332 is especially bad during the summer months with so much traffic on a road designed to accommodate the number of cars from thirty years ago. Trying to pass slower vehicles is a dangerous proposition and many impatient drivers take their lives in their hands.

On a recent visit to Alicante we had a close call while trying to pass an old truck that was poking along and would not get over to let traffic pass.

The N332 needs to be widened to a four lane motorway because there is no way it can stay the way it is. Entering the N332 from the airport there should be a massive sign saying ‘Enter at your own risk’.

Looking for a home in Spain FOR A few years we have been wanting to buy and live permanently in Spain, but with all the illegal houses being sold, problems with electricity being cut off and also water and phones etc. have all these things been addressed? If so where should I look to find my home on the Costa Blanca?

CAN ANYONE tell me what has happened to the rubbish collection service on Las Filipinos, especially on Calle Nicaragua. At one time we enjoyed a nightly collection service with the bin men coming to empty the bin around midnight: now it appears that they have forgotten this road exists.

Over the last week all the rubbish has only been removed once. On other days, bags of kitchen rubbish, used nappies and other smelly household waste were placed alongside the bin as it was impossible to thrust another item into the overfull container.

If the nightly collection service has been reduced then surely there is a need for additional rubbish bins to be provided otherwise we are going to be overrun with rats, mice and other vermin. This area has many yearround residents and the bins are always full by the time they are emptied.

A missed day results in residents being forced to place their rubbish bags near the rubbish bin - clearly upsetting the collection men. However, if the bins were emptied on a daily basis this would be unnecessary.

Piled up household waste is a health hazard. Residents are irritated by fly infestations and disgusting smells. The decision to reduce the number of collections is clearly a cost-cutting service. What is the likelihood that this cut is being applied only to the coast and not to Orihuela city? Is this another case where the coast is being victimised?

Great day in Gib WE HAVE just returned from a few days’ holiday, going to Sevilla (beautiful city), Cadiz (disappointed, not what we thought), finishing up in Gibraltar. We decided to drive in in the morning and arrived in the queue at 9.30am. At 12.20 we were approached by a Civil Guard who asked how long we had been waiting, we said nearly 3 hours and he said ‘okay’ and walked away.

About 15 minutes later we were at the border control. The female Civil Guard asked for our passports, my driving licence and the car documents. After a cursory glance she asked me to open the boot and when I got back into the car asked me how long we had lived in Spain, to which I said ‘6 years’. She then said ‘okay’ and we drove into Gibraltar.

On leaving the Rock we arrived at the border control and were waved through without being asked to stop!

This proves, if anybody was not sure, that this is nothing but political and nothing to do with smuggling alcohol and cigarettes. Having said all the above we had a great day in Gib. Tony Ackroyd, Rojales

Frustrating

THANKS TO all who work hard to make RTN available to us, your readers. I feel I should comment on the letter of the week by Brad and Roxana Murray. What they experienced I could most assuredly relate to and the excellent cartoon by Carter McKeague definitely expressed how my spouse and I felt the last time we went to the cinema. It is frustrating to pay good money to see a movie then have it ruined by the performance of a few.

We had to put up with Yobs talking loud on their mobiles and taking pictures while the movie was playing despite there being a sign informing patrons not to use mobile phones during the duration of the movie. We shan’t pay good money again to go to a Cinema to be tormented by the improper behaviour of other patrons. Thanks again for that letter and cartoon.

A non-rambling Rav Watts In Britain By

ANYONE OUT there in RTN land know anything about the Toyota Rav 4? Mine has been sick for three weeks now. The man from Britannia Rescue (all part of my comprehensive insurance cover) said it is an electrical problem and I’d best be speaking to Toyota, before adding, “Your service includes a tow to a garage of your choice; within a ten mile radius.” Oh great, hmmm but which one? “No,” I said, “it’s okay mate leave it here.”

Even Richard, the wonder kid from work who (this side of Jeremy Clarkson) is the fount of all vehicular knowledge, is baffled. He is tending to think along the lines of Britannia Rescue (or Britannia-not-Rescue as I now call ’em). “Well, it’s sort of electrics,” says Rich, “I reckon that the car has immobilised itself, we’d better speak with Toyota.”

Whoa, just a minute, can you rewind a bit, immobilised itself? Has it got an immobiliser then, Rich?

Sucking in a breath like a builder about to give a quote, he points to a strange looking object (most things in car engines are strange looking objects to me). “That black box tucked there,” says Rich, “is undoubtedly the Toyota Theft Deterrent System - and it’s time we talk to Toyota.”

Richard is spot on, although to be pedantic the strange object is the Toyota 5000 System ll Theft Deterrent System. “We call it the TTDS for short,” says the nice

man at Tamworth Toyota before adding, “have you got the fob?” Fob? There’s a fob? What fob? “Uh huh, there’d have definitely been a fob,” says Toyota Tam. This is all news to me; I’ve had the thing for four years now and never, ever, seen a fob before. Luckily, having purchased the Rav from a chum in Sussex I reason that a quick phone call to him may elucidate.

Two minutes later, after the aforementioned quick phone call, and Rich is raking around in the bottom of the glove box. And, hey presto, from a dark long (and rather mucky) abandoned recess he produces a strange looking object (yes, another one). Thankfully, it was the fob. Unthankfully, it didn’t work, so was as much use as an ash tray on a motorbike. Or, as Rich preferred, “a chocolate tea pot...”

“Trouble is,” says Toyota Tam, “they’ve not been in use for twelve years.” He helpfully adds, “and you can’t get them or their batteries anymore.” I groan outwardly: “Where oh where, is Shane Tonks these days?” Rich and Tam look at me perplexed. I shrug and say, “he’s the erstwhile motoring expert of the Round Town News - the Costa Blanca’s favourite weekly newspaper - who (this side of Jeremy Clarkson) is the fount of all vehicular knowledge!” Rich and Tam look at me perplexed...

And so, the Rav resides outside my residence in NMN (non-motoring mode), whilst I rely on my ped-

al powered Raleigh (and my aging legs). The master plan currently, is to immobilise the immobiliser. This apparently requires much Internet trawling to reveal how we are going to achieve this. So, I repeat my above plea, does anyone out there in RTN land know anything about the Toyota Rav 4? Especially, immobilising Rav 4 immobilisers. Mind you, all this cycling will get my body mass index down a tad, eh?

FORGET MURDER on the dance floor, Saturday was all about mayhem on the race track! The oval circuit proved too much of a challenge for some with spin outs, early retirements and even a car flipped over on its roof. Thankfully, the safety precautions carried out by Velocity prevailed and no-one was hurt although the same could not be said of the car. Just as well, as the driver in question was all for getting back out there but that’s racing mentality for you!

With a number of new rookie rods on the track, title chasers Caroline Capel in #46 and Paul Drewett in #55 had their work cut out securing point scoring finishes. Licensed to thrill in number (yes you’ve guessed it!) 007, Ritchie Gibson took the first win of the night – fighting off challenges from both Caroline and new-comer Alex Knight to earn it. Both Caroline and Alex got their revenge winning the second and third races respectively. Looks like Alex is going to be one to watch in the future. The lightning rods were quite simply electric. With the experience and skills on show, there was never a dull moment and it was all the crowd could do to keep up with action. The battle continued between Nick Kelly in #48 and Dave Belchi in #8 with Nick boxing Belchi in beautifully to secure the first win. The second race was a different story with another newcomer Chris Haycock making his mark by taking the win in the second before performing that incredible flip in the third – some drivers want to win real bad!

Planting Cacti by

CACTI ARE very useful and popular plants for both gardens and apartment terraces.

There are an amazing variety available, ranging from dwarf mammillaria, dwarf or snowball cacti to mediumsized ball-like echinocactii; ferocacti to tall and spreading cereus and opunta cacti - and of course there are the various coloured Christmas cacti.

We illustrated some twenty of the most popular families of cacti and also six families of the related succulents agaves and aloes in Part Four of our book Your Garden in Spain. If you are new to Spain, Part Four includes descriptions of some 400 useful plants.

At the time of writing we have a most amazing red flower opening on a epicactus on our dining terrace worth sitting and watching unfold for several hours over a good bottle of wine and some tasty tapas. The final flower measures 15 – 20cm with as many as five opening on one plant in one evening.

They need little attention once established, if they are planted in suitable soils and microclimates: The best

growing medium is one which is humus-rich, freedraining, open structure and gritty or sandy. A soil rich in ancient larva chippings is ideal. All cacti benefit from a mulch of crushed volcanic larva or stone chippings.

With patience they can also be raised from seed, can survive months of drought. Apart from rotting off if waterlogged, they rarely attract pests and diseases.

They may be planted in containers or in the garden, window boxes, rockeries or raised beds. So if you live on a golf complex with kept gardens you can still develop an interesting collection on a terrace or roof top. A prickly pear cacti hedge can act as a windbreak or even a useful firebreak but perhaps not on golf courses if you need to look for lost balls. In the vegetable garden two ears broken off a Prickly Pear cacti, pushed into the soil at ninety degrees to each other, can act as a useful windbreak for young plants such as squash and melons.

Interesting jams and liquors can be made from the fruit of Opunta Indica or prickly pear cacti.

There is a wide choice of small cacti available in many

garden centres and cacti are a good choice for absentee or lazy gardeners.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS Most cacti have prickles and spikes that can penetrate even the toughest gardening gloves. A cacti garden is not recommended where children will be running round or infirm people use the garden.

But in both cases safe cacti gardens could be developed on a growing table.

Prickly off shoots can be broken off tall plants by gales, so take care if you have a cacti hedge...

The roots of large varieties can become invasive if the plants are against garden or house walls.

Some are not frost hardy. And many do not like their roots to be waterlogged.

If they are they soon rot off, particularly small plants.

GREY IS what’s available when you try a get a definitive answer on Spanish Succession tax rules.

I have read several articles and met with several experts but still it is difficult at a glance to work out what an individual could be liable for.

What is black and white is the Spanish authorities do need to get every hold of every centime they can and then try to invent a new way to increase taxes. It is beginning to feel like one of those old Robin Hood films where the King’s tax collectors come around burning down farmers homes only a week after they had paid their tax and not being able to afford a new increase applied the day before by King John.

What has changed are the rules relating to succession tax in the Valencia region for spouses and direct descendants - the reduction in tax relief for habitual residents that fall into these categories has been reduced from 95% to 75%. This means that in some

circumstances a spouse may have to pay succession tax not only on what they inherit from their spouse, be it cash or property, but also on the Spanish assets they currently own whereby before they did not.

So Expats who have invested their lifetime hard earned cash in a retirement property thinking they will have no tax burden until they both no longer live on this earth then they can think again! The poor in-mourning spouse could in some circumstances be lumbered with a tax bill just to continue living in their own home.

What you can do though to mitigate this is make sure your investments and cash do not face the same succession tax bill. There are ways in which investments can be structured as to not be subject to Spanish succession tax on first death, this is straightforward and uncomplicated.

Property transfer tax

HAS THE Valencian Tax Office reviewed the value you declared on your purchase deed and asked you to pay an extra transfer tax?

DO NOT PAY, the High Court of the Valencian Community has confirmed that the revaluation method used is not valid, and has declared the revisions null and void.

Good news for taxpayers, on the 1st of October 2013, the highly important Court Order number 1336/2013 has been granted by the Contentious-Administrative Section of the High Court of the Valencian Community ( TSJ).

This court order is considered relevant, as it states that the method used by the Tax Office to review and re-evaluate the prices and values declared on the notarial Deeds of purchase, gift and inheritance IS NOT VALID, as it is based on the properties cadastral details and on general values approved and issued by the same taxman for tax purposes.

The TSJ states that these values could be used as a guidance,

but the valuations must be done individually, noting that the tax inspectors do not visit or check the properties one by one, and also the cadastral description sometimes does not match with the reality, etc.

This court order comes at a time when the Tax Authorities ( Oficina Liquidadoras) are increasing the revision and inspection of declared values and prices on public deeds, by means of these revaluation processes.

Therefore, if you receive a letter from CONSELLERÍA stating that the value you declared on your purchase, gift or inheritance has been reviewed, and now is higher and therefore you need to pay extra transfer tax, gift or inheritance tax, before paying it let us know. If the revaluation has the same defects mentioned on the court order 1336/2013 above mentioned, our law firm will assist you to contest it.

VARIOUS TRADERS in Benidorm have been detained by police after being caught in possession of around 3,000 counterfeit garments.

Among those arrested are five men and five women of Spanish, Chinese and Indian nationality who are responsible for the ten shops in which the operation took place. They have now been released after giving evidence to the Brigade of the Judicial Police Local Police Station Benidorm.

Find out the rules and then play by them IF YOU own a property in Spain you should be ready for the unexpected. Not everything will run logically or operate in the way that you are used to.

If your connection with Spain is more than a few years old, you will know exactly what I mean.

For example, take a neighbour of ours. Our houses are next to each other, yet our house number is 848 and his is 685. Why? We’ve often speculated that it was something to do with having a different plot number or being originally part of a different street. Who knows, and by and large it hasn’t been a problem… except when it came to his property tax. For years he had paid nothing. Hadn’t it occurred to him that something was wrong? After all, paying some form of council tax is normal procedure in every country. You can’t plead national ignorance for this one. He had chosen not to see that amongst the bills for utilities and community fees there should also be at least something resembling property tax. Even worse, he can’t

have been reading any of our articles!

THE WRONG ADDRESS This is where the irregular house numbering comes in.

One day, the post man delivered a letter for council tax to our neighbour. He was doubly confused because he hadn’t seen one of these before and although the house number was correct it was a different street name on the envelope. Further investigation revealed that for some reason, this was the address that the town hall tax collecting agency (SUMA in this area) had been using all those years. If you are familiar with the way SUMA works here then you will see what’s coming next. As he followed up the letter with SUMA he was astounded to discover that they were going to charge him for four years’ back tax plus the current year. Our neighbour was not best pleased. Seeing that they had never addressed the envelope correctly or ensured it arrived at the right address how was he to know?

YOUR RESPONSIBILITY He didn’t have a leg to stand on. When it comes to paying your taxes, the onus is on you to keep up-todate and to find out what you must pay. In this case it was the council tax or IBI that he had defaulted on, had he been a non-resident then, no doubt, he would have been in arrears for his non-resident income tax too.

Omitting to pay non-resident income tax is more understandable. It is an unusual tax that many Spanish property owners find confusing. It is in addition to the normal council tax and it is your responsibility to make your declaration before the 31st December each year. If you don’t, then just like our neighbour, you can expect to have a little mountain of debt waiting for you when the time does come to pay.

Irregularities abound in Spain. This doesn’t mean that you don’t have to play by the rules. Rules there are, just don’t expect anyone to tell you about them.

Get real! … That’s the reality!

I HAVE intentionally stayed away from anything to do with the dreadful Kardashian family in America, a bunch of people who have milked the reality show genre to its limit and back again. They have had a show called ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ running since 2007, and when it comes to super bad these saddos are right out of the top drawer. It is attention seeking at its most crude. Although I have intentionally stayed away from these people they are here today so that I can relate a story I picked up that consolidates my opinion of reality shows and where they stand in the world of genuine entertainment.

Another major league player in the business of attention seeking is rapper Kayne West, and now that he is the latest squeeze and has had a baby with Kim Kardashian, he appears to have fallen under her spell as when he was being interviewed by top US chat show host Jimmy Kimmel last week he said: “There’s no way that Kim Kardashian shouldn’t have a star on the Walk of Fame.”

He is of course referring to the street in Hollywood where the greats of the entertainment business have their names on a star on a paving stone, and he is suggesting that his chica … zero talent chica by the way - should lie alongside people like Katherine Hepburn and

James Dean.

The story has gone mega in America and Ana Martinez, spokeswoman for the Walk and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s’ reply was: “We don’t have reality stars on the Walk of Fame, we don’t have a category for it, they will only get considered if they get nominated for, or win, an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar…”

Well said Ana, but it’s the cheek that this story is all about: is their truly somebody out there who believes any reality show person (not star) could come anywhere near such recognition. But let me leave you with Ana’s rather appropriate closing statement that reads: “I hate to say it, but a lot of people just don’t like her.”

Takeaway chicken with ginger sauce THERE SEEMS to be a lot of love out there for The Ginger Prince, and the story I have about him today might well explain why so many of us would like to have Prince Harry round for tea. At the time of writing England had just qualified for the World Cup and like most English patriots Prince Harry was spotted enjoying the moment. At the polo club with a hot date on each arm? … Nope! … Having a jolly up with his army buddies? … Nope! … believe it or not The Ginger Prince was photographed in the Fulham Broadway branch of Nandos chowing down on a chicken breast fillet in pitta bread with extra cheese and creamy mash … oh yes, and he also had a side order of regular chips.

The person who took the pic got in touch with the Mirror and they found a very lively eye witness who said “Moments after he left the restaurant clutching his dinner in a paper bag a member of staff jumped on the bench Harry was sitting on and shouted: “I’m on the Prince’s throne!” … Alrighty! It appears that Harry has a penchant for the Portuguese eatery as he was spotted in the Stevenage branch in 2009.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Step by Step Spanish -54 Compound verb tenses (5) WE’RE GOING to talk about auxiliaries, subjunctives and compound verb forms today.

I JUST thought I’d tell you straight away in case have accidentally strayed into this article thinking it was going to help you to order a cup of coffee. We’re onto some of the harder stuff at the moment, although we will be back to basics in a few more weeks, if you can wait till then.

For those sufficiently equipped against the elements, the first thing we are going to do is conjugate the auxiliary verb “haber” in its present subjunctive form. It is an irregular verb in the present subjunctive, and goes like this: Haya Hayas Haya

Hayamos Hayáis Hayan

“Haya” is also the subjunctive form of “hay” (there is/there are) so it would appear it this sort of sentence: “No creo que haya mucha

gente en la clase” (I don’t think there are many people in the class). Apart from that, the rest of the conjugation would only appear when we want the subjunctive version of the present perfect. In other words, where we would normally use:

(You (plural) have eaten all the cake) Now we’re going to put them into sentences which require them to become subjunctive.

Let’s start again. Here are some examples of sentences with verbs in the present perfect.

Es posible que hayamos estado en Madrid (It’s possible that we’ve been to Madrid).

No creo que mis amigos hayan visto la película (I don’t think my friends have seen the film).

Parece mentira que hayáis comido toda la tarta (I can’t believe you’ve eaten all the cake).

Hemos estado en Madrid.

(We have been to Madrid) Mis amigos han visto la película (My friends have seen the film) Habéis comido toda la tarta

Don’t forget incidentally that none of this is pronounced like English word hay – i.e. the stuff like straw that horses eat. “Hay” sounds pretty much like our pronoun “I” and that sound needs to be maintained at all times!

Testing

IF YOU wish to convert to be a Jew there is a simple pathway you have to follow to enable this. The first step will find you standing at the door of the local Rabbi’s house to ask for his help. You will give your name and say what you want to do…. and the door will be closed, maybe slammed in your face. The persistent will rebook their appointment and knock on the door once more. They will repeat their needs and have the same door closed on them. The brave and the undaunted will re schedule a time with the Rabbi and re request their needs when the Rabbi opens the door yet again. However, third time around that door will slam and you will be on the wrong side of it, you the non Jew left on the doorstep once more. If there is a fourth time of asking the door is opened by a smiling Rabbi. He will welcome you in and tell you all that you have to do to make such a journey into a new and wonderful religion. Of course you have been tried and tested and you have passed, even though the few years of study may not be for you after all.

I see so many who are being sorely tested these days. So too are others full of belief, that are the result of faith. What makes people so different? The examination system was never for me, though I was proud of my clutch of O and A levels and my degree. I always felt that I under achieved, and that the examiner couldn’t really know what I was all about, so he or she was judging me on one 90 minute examination.

So too are testing situations often so daunting. They leave behind those who think that they have passed or failed, and it’s good to pass, but what if you don’t?

Suddenly there were magical things that I could do, but then I thought that everyone could do what I was doing. I think they could have, but I was ready to go further as many would not have been. To me playing with Spirit Children who others couldn’t see was a plus for me, albeit that they dressed in Victorian clothing, they were attracted to me and me to them.

It wasn’t macabre or scary, it just happened. Spirit tested me from that time onwards. I had to be good enough, and though I had my fair share of disappointment, I never feared failure, and positive energy took over. One day my Spirit friends left me, but I was left knowing that there would be something else, and my God there was!

The spiritual testing situation is a precarious one for many. At least for those who have not realised that we work with Spirit, and not just for them, and that reveal tells us that they do our work in the Spirit World, whilst we do there work here on Earth.

Being able to think outside the box does help. Better still it is better to reach a state whereby the box is removed, or maybe it never did exist, anyway? Fear stops all process that demand our soul energy, and you cannot be afraid of a body of journeyed souls who want to help us live a better life here on this Planet.

They may be your friends and family, or inspired people who have something to give back to the World they left behind, such as a specific gift or talent.

Tested? I still am from time to time and it keeps me on my toes, but I have the great privilege to be able to work with the living and the dead and that has taught me not to acknowledge the negative and to live life for the positive solutions that are never too far away. Next to the stinging nettle grows the dock leaf, and the antidote is quick and easy and takes away all pain.

Do whatever it takes. Please do not be afraid of Spirit.

Talk to them because dialogue is essential between you. So too can you tell them off if you do not get something you know that you deserve. They won’t think badly of you, rather they will realise that you are only asking for that which you deserve, and Gita, if anyone deserves it you do!!

Utiel – Not exactly beautiful but with plenty of bull IT MUST be admitted that Utiel lacks the charm of nearby Requena, but it does have its moments, particularly in the warren of narrow streets around the church. The church itself is magnificent in it simplicity. Barely decorated, in complete contrast to most of the churches in the Valencian Community, the simple stone walls and barley-sugar twist pilasters with their gilded capitals has a majesty that outweighs much of the extravagant ornamentation seen elsewhere.

With recordings of Gregorian chant enhancing more than destroying the peacefulness, it is the sort of place where, even if you aren’t of a religious mind, you can’t help but want to sit awhile and absorb the tranquillity.

Utiel is one of the main wine production towns in the Valencian Community, and gives its name to the Denominación de Origin Utiel-Requena (where its name goes first, much to the chagrin of the Requenenses). Once mainly exported or used for blending, the region is now producing some excellent wines, hence the D.O., and is Valencia’s main producer of cava.

The Cooperativa Agricola Utiel is the main bodega to visit in Utiel for well-priced wines. Great tiled swathes of grapevines decorate either side of the arched doorway with a tiled panel above depicting a poetic rural landscape of lowing oxen pulling a plough through deeply tilled earth.

The huge metal door itself would look more in keeping as the entrance to a prison, but during working hours it opens to reveal the work going on around the huge shining vats in which the wine is produced.

Two large tiled plaques inform you that it was built between 1949 and1960 and has a capacity of 30 million litres: some resaca (hangover!) Step inside and the bouquet certainly doesn’t have the hint of chocolate and raspberries that wine aficionados eulogise about.

If you want to sample the product you can do so at the Despach de Vinos next door.

To see how it’s all done, visit the Museo del Vino housed in the Bodega Redondo (Round Bodega – which is exactly what it was) where tools and equipment used in wine making for centuries past are on display. As you walk around the lower section, where the wine would once have been stored, look up at the ceiling and you will see it is made up of broken bits of tiles (to help with insulation), some of which are so gorgeous that any collector would give his eye teeth even for the damaged piece.

Unlike the façade of the Cooperativa, the bullring almost opposite is more a thing of ugly than a thing of beauty.

Even so, the locals are inordinately proud of their plaza de toros, which was built in 1858 and rivals that of Bocairent as the oldest in the Comunidad and is the second largest in the region, second only to the bullring in the capital.

The Guardia Civil barracks on Calle Heroes de Tollo (which presumably celebrates a battle, although I could find nothing relating to the name other than an hotel, restaurant and industrial estate) is like a big iced birthday cake in the shape of a castle, with turrets and all. Don’t be tempted to take a photo though, because they are considered military establishments and therefore secret – although how secret can they be, stuck on the main road into town! I was pulled inside one a couple of years ago when I was spotted photographing the barracks in Torrevieja and was only allowed out after a sergeant had a long conversation with the editor of the newspaper I was working for and I deleted the image.

Murcia’s XII International Puppet Festival TEN COMPANIES from Holland, Brazil, Argentina and Spain will meet in Murcia’s XII International Puppet Festival. The new edition, whose motto is “The best audience in the world”, will be held from 2nd November to 10th November in 16 different locations around Murcia, in the city of Murcia, Aguilas and Jumilla.

A total of 10 companies will offer a total of 12 performances along with films and parallel activities such as puppet workshops for the entire family.

This year’s parallel activities will include screening three animated films in collaboration with the Regional Film Archive, a puppet workshop for families in the Artillery Barracks taught by Argentine Marcelo puppeteer Pablo Fernández , who in turn, will perform at the festival with his family show; The price of shows is between 3€ and 12€ with tickets for the shows for the Teatro Circo, Bernal Theatre, Teatro Vico, The Classic Café Theatre and Scenic Puppaclown Centre may be purchased at their retail outlets or through their websites. Stuffed courgettes with a rich tomato sauce

The authentic flavour of India at Shakira

• 2-3 medium courgettes • 250g minced beef • 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped • 1 small red pepper, de-seeded and diced • 150g mushrooms roughly chopped

COURGETTES ARE cheap and abundant in Spain and they are an excellent vegetable grilled or lightly boiled. This is an interesting way of baking them with a savoury stuffing and a rich tomato sauce.

It makes an excellent starter or even a main course.

• 1 garlic clove, peeled and chopped • Salt and Pepper • 1tsp mixed dried herbs • 100g grated cheese • 400g can of chopped tomatoes 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. 2. Fry the mince beef and onions together in a little oil until the meat is lightly coloured. Add the herbs and the diced pepper and fry for a further 5-6 minutes. Add the garlic and mushrooms and fry for another 5-6 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Set aside to cool.

3. Slice the courgettes in half lengthways and use a teaspoon to scoop out the soft seeds and pith in

the centre.

4. Reserve about 2 tbls of the meat mixture and spoon the remainder into the hollowed out courgettes. Sprinkle with the grated cheese and place in a shallow baking dish. Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes.

5. Meanwhile, pour the canned tomatoes into a frying pan with the reserved meat mixture and heat gently, stirring until you have a thick sauce.

Check and season to taste. Spoon the tomato sauce onto serving plates and place the cooked courgettes on top.

Serves 2 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time 40 minutes

Access contacts on an iPad 4 HI AUNTY: I have bought an iPad 4. I use Gmail and can’t use my contacts as I normally can in windows I have to enter one address at a time which is very long winded where in windows I tick a box then send my email to as many people as I like - easy done… Any ideas please? John, Albir.

Aunty says: Usually, if you cannot select your contact from a list then you have not imported your contacts into your iPad? Also, usually as soon as you start to type in an email address, you should get a drop down menu with the contacts showing, so you can select the email contact you want. When you type an email address for the first time that email address will be remembered the next time you go to type that person an email.

If this is not happening then the setting on the iPad is not correct. If your contacts are on your email account but not being used by the iPad, then you’ll need to turn on contacts in the settings app. Click on Mail, contacts, and Calendars and then click on your gmail account. You should then see something like a settings page, where you can turn on contacts.

As far as I am aware, the standard iPad email service does not allow for ‘groups’ of email contacts to be created. To send email via a ‘group’ mailing list, you will need a third party app - like ‘Group Email’.

Language settings HI AUNTY: Can you please help me? I have set Google.co.uk as my home page and by way of the main options displayed in the top task bar access my Gmail email accounts.

The problem I have is that all too often when the ‘Sign in’ appears the main heading and the other headings (Username, Password) are in Dutch and not English. This situation has only arisen following access I allowed to my computer to some Dutch friends who needed to print off their boarding passes for their flight back to the Netherlands. I observed most of the actions taken by our Dutch friend (the wife) and was unaware of anything untoward in what she did. However, I now have this problem and whilst I

can switch the language back to English (UK) by using the multi choice scroll option (bottom right on Desktop), it is an irritating inconvenience. I have tried to correct this situation but have not succeeded: John from Moraira Aunty says: On the bottom of the ‘sign in’ screen, there is a menu which allows you to change the language. And this should remain in that language until you change it again. Also, once in Gmail, you can go into its settings (the grey cog icon), and in there under the general tab you can change gmail language options, so check to see if this is English.

´Nortons Ghost`

DEAR AUNTY: Three or four times a week on a totally random basis my computer pings out the tune: ‘Merrily, merrily we roll along, roll along, roll along!!’ It is not connected with any particular programme or action on my part. I have paid-up Norton protection which regularly reports on and eliminates Cookies, so whatever causes the tune is not detected

by Norton. On one occasion it even played after I had powered down and the computer was switched off.

It seems to be doing no harm, but may I please enquire through your column if anyone else has experienced this strange phenomenon? Many thanks, Mike.

Aunty says: I thought I had an answer to this problem, until I read you hear the sound even when the PC is switched off…

So if it was playing even when the PC was switched off, then either it is something the monitor makes, or it comes from another device you have connected...as it cannot come from the PC if, as you say, the PC was switched off. But then Nortons do have a product called ‘Nortons Ghost’, perhaps being taken too literally!

I will print your message in the newspaper and see if anyone else has any idea - if anything it may raise a chuckle or two!

Ian on-his-way IAN HOLLOWAY was relieved of his managerial duties

by Crystal Palace on Wednesday having guided his team to just three Premier League points from eight games so far this season. Now I’m sure the knee-jerk reaction from the media will be that it’s too soon and that managerial consistency in the key to success but I’m really not sure that that’s the case on this occasion.

Holloway took over from Dougie Freedman last November with the team riding high at the top of the Championship yet they only managed to scrape into the playoffs on the final day of the season; winning just two of their last eighteen matches. Promotion was secured eventually however, so most Eagles fans were willing to give Ollie the benefit of the doubt, but then along came the transfer window….

Holloway’s apparent policy of ‘quantity over quality’ resulted in not one but TWO of his summer signings being left out of his 25-man Premier League squad, leaving the players in question in limbo and a gaping hole in the Selhurst Park balance sheet. Add that to the fact that so many of the other new recruits were former charges of Holloway and Palace fans could be forgiven for being somewhat underwhelmed by their club’s summer business.

It’s such a shame though because I like Ian Holloway, he isn’t a bad manager and I wanted him to do well, but the fact remains that unfortunately for the Palace faithful, Ollie’s no more a Premier League manager than Danny Gabbidon’s a Premier League centre-half and that’s why, in my opinion, the change HAD to be made.

Oh, and by the way Ian, whatever the question is, Cameron Jerome is never, ever the answer!

The Rules of Golf: sacrosanct or not?

IN A WEEK where more allegations were leveled at the best golfer in the game I thought it appropriate to discuss the feelings of many of us golfers who perhaps agree with the allegations made by Brandle Chamblee.

Tiger Woods has been the figurehead for golfers for many years so it is very sad when we see allegations of cheating aimed at the very person who should be unapproachable when it comes to upholding the rules of our game. On the face of it Tiger seems to have got away with four things this year that seem to be cheating to those who are not privy to the decisions made at top level.

Imagine this scenario happening in your society or golf club just for a minute. Your best player takes drops in places where he should not and signs for incorrect scores into the bargain. How would the rest of your members react if they seemed to be showing favoritism towards him and ignoring the Rules of Golf as laid down by the games governing body?

Surely everyone in the game should be treated the same when it comes to the rules of golf? Many will argue that the rules are unclear in many cases.

I disagree: if there are any doubts play the ball as it lies and be honest with yourself… Does anyone really want to be a winner with others wondering if they are a cheat or does anyone really want to be wearing the badge of a cheat in the eyes of their peers? Surely not the majority of honest golfers who regard the Rules of Golf as sacrosanct?

Let’s all hope that this situation with Tiger is not dragged into the courts and gets resolved for those who look to the game’s number one player to set an example.

Tour Talk CHINA WAS the place to be last weekend if you had ambitions to secure a win on the European Tour or secure your card for next year. England’s Ross Fisher has shown good form recently and was among the most likely winners at the start of the week. Jin Jeong of Korea had other ideas, however, as he edged out Fisher in a play-off. Jeong can now rest easy and has no need to attend second stage qualifying for a card next year after his first European Tour victory secured his card for the next two years.

Many more will hope to avoid the torturous trip to Tour School in the next couple of weeks with victory in the forthcoming events and get into The Dubai World Championship next month.

THE MATCH this week was the 6th round of the winter championship at the Embalse de Argos. The water level is certainly receding now as it is some 6-8 feet below where we were fishing at the start of the season.

Barbel is now the abundant species with only a few carp being caught, although these are quite big, circa 2+ kilos. The Barbel has grown, now averaging around one kilo to a kilo and a half in size and giving a very good account of themselves. Again, our venue expert Doug Hornblow gave another demonstration on how to catch Barbel up in the water.

We were again visited by the Seprona (Environmental Police) who checked our permission from Murcia Federation for the match, and then went and checked each angler for their license and insurance. So a word of warning: if you do not have either of these documents and you fish there you have a good chance of being caught and fined!

ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS: Supplied by Terry Screen We fished this week’s 7th round match of the Winter League on the river Segura at Murcia on 15th October.

Although it was probably passable under the bridge, fortunately we managed to peg everyone below the bridge and the water had a steady flow but is still a funny colour and not fishing to its potential for the time of year, with anglers struggling for bites.

To make matters worse, we were half way through the match when a large track machine turned up to begin cutting the weeds down. After a bit of arm waving and shouting the Police turned up and examined all our paperwork, which they

found to be in order. They advised the weed cutters to wait until the match was finished before they began.

I was talking to the driver of the cutter after the match and he said the machine was going through to Rojales and Guadamar as well.

Peugeot 508 SW A PANORAMIC GLASS ROOF IS A NECESSITY ONLY THE other week I tested the Mazda CX-5 and bemoaned how dark the interior was compared to the Nissan Qashqai. The reason was that the Mazda lacked the expansive glass roof of its competitor making it really dull even on a bright summer’s day.

Peugeot, unlike Mazda, knows the importance of such a luxury and has been duly incorporating this into its designs for some time. The 508SW benefits from an expansive 1.62sq m tinted glass roof (25% larger than the one fitted to the 407 SW). It makes such a difference, especially when the sun is beating down during the heat wave where temperatures regularly exceed 30º Celsius.

This roof really does transform the passenger experience so much so that two-year-old daughter Harriett thoroughly enjoys looking out of it during a long journey to Devon. The numerous branch covered roads eventually send her to sleep.

I drove the 508 saloon when it was first launched and marvelled at the high specification and its sheer style as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz.

But I do believe that Peugeot has surpassed itself with its SW estate version.

Gone are the days of ugly estate cars: this is a joy to behold.

Head on, its masculine, purposeful and sporty front end is enough to make even the most hardnosed BMW driver pull over when he sees it appear in the rear view mirror. There is no part of its design that I can criticise; I even like the boot, which is quite an achievement for an estate car. The pearlescent white paintwork (a £655 option) undoubtedly adds to its appeal.

When you’re struggling with two little children the last thing you want to do is fiddle about trying to find your car keys and then have to unlock the vehicle.

With the Peugeot, as long as the key is on you it will automatically unlock with two pulls of a door handle. Sumptuous luxury is found inside and there’s a massive amount of room, too. The boot swallows our tandem pushchair and

is large enough to cope with a week’s worth of holiday luggage, although admittedly the security cover has to be left at home because the pushchair is too large to pull it over. The two girls have bags of room in the back, which is just as well because the floor provides added luggage space.

A driver couldn’t be happier really. They are provided with an electrically adjustable seat complete with massage function, for those particularly stressful journeys. Needless to say it comes in very handy when we are confronted with an hour-long tailback due to a major road traffic accident.
