THEY HAVE announced the opening of new routes from Murcia to Eindhoven and Barcelona, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura to Manchester for the next summer season.

On March 30th, the airline will inaugurate daily flights between Barcelona and Manchester and between Gran Canaria and the English city, with two weekly departures. On April 1st, Fuerteventura starts flights to Manchester and one day later, they will start twice-weekly flights between Murcia and Eindhoven.

Ryanair also expand the frequency of some of its flights from Girona Airport to Eindhoven and from airports in Ibiza, Lanzarote, Malaga and Tenerife South to Man-

chester. “To celebrate our new routes, Ryanair has launched a special bid for seats in the new routes announced from 27.99 euros flying from March to May 2014,” said head of marketing and sales for Spain, Luis Fernández-Mellado. In recent months, Ryanair has made some improvements in customer relations and offerings including the ability to take onboard a second small handbag and offering lower prices for reprint your boarding pass at the airport at 15 euros.

Meanwhile all industry eyes are watching the latest venture from Google and their latest ‘top-secret’ geared towards researching prices for airline routes online.

by Keith Nicol Although it’s not cheap to offer a unique free transportation system to residents, Torrevieja had done so for many years, until the crisis hit in 2011 and they had to issue a charge for it. In 2011, the first year of operation, more than 8,000 cards were applied for

by Torrevieja residents, registered in the city and on the padron. For 2014 the charge for 12 months of bus travel around the City of salt is an unbeatable 7€ plus an average of 2€ in commission that is applied by the banks.

Those holding cards or wishing to pick up one for the first time, should head to the offices of the Department of Transportation (inside the old Town Hall) during business hours 7:40am to 2:15pm bringing with you an up to date copy of your padron, passport, nie and copies of everything. As is the way of doing things in Spain, first go to the office, take note of the Account number and Bank details

that is printed there, go and pay your seven euro plus commission, and return to the office with your receipt of payment. Take a number and await your turn. Everyone wishing a card must go to the office in person, as a photo will be taken of each and every applicant that will appear on your Pass.

The Bus Pass also doubles as Torrevieja’s new Citizen’s Card and the government will soon be implementing a system of access to various municipal services through the Citizen Card, such as entrance to the Floating Museum of Torrevieja, CMO, Library etc.

Orihuela shopping goes green THE CENTRE of Orihuela is enjoying a boost in sales as customers flock to the second Organic Market held in the town this week, offering food items such as cheese and fresh vegetables, green cosmetics, toiletries and sweets. Environment Councillor Manuel Gallud is hoping the popular market will become a regular feature in the town centre, encouraging shoppers to buy healthy products, help the environment and in passing also patronise other shops around the Plaza de Orihuela.

Real Estate forecasts for 2014

by Keith Nicol PROSPERITY ALONG the coastal regions over the last two decades has mostly been associated with the real estate boom that started in the late nineties.

The real estate landscape has shown a constant negative since the outbreak of the economic crisis more than six years ago but many experts have already detected some early indications of improvement, if not recovery for 2014.

According to the credit rating agency Standard & Poor, housing prices in Spain will continue to fall until at least 2015. Specifically, S & P predicts a depreciation of 5% in 2014 and 1% in 2015. Meanwhile, Beatriz Toribio, who’s responsible for the ‘fotocasa.com’ study, believes that falling housing prices in 2014 will be between 8% and 9% and in turn notes that “will be the year of the renter.” Furthermore, the inability of many homeowners to sell their properties, continue pushing down rents and this year, the expert expects a further fall of rents 5%. In 2013 the house price index was adjusted 8.5% in the case of housing for sale and 5.2% in tenancy, as reported by fotocasa annual prices .

Unemployment and depletion of family income have caused the delinquency rate for home purchases to skyrocket to

5.4% according to the latest data from the Bank of Spain in the third quarter of 2013. This means that this has almost doubled in just two years. Given this fact, the association of victims foreclosures and Auctions ( AFES ) expect numbers to increase significantly in 2014, with this default rate reaching 6% and maybe even surpassing it, based on the analysis of three variables: the growing number of failed refinances; increasing unemployment and lowering the number of mortgages granted. Since the crisis began, 150,000 families have lost their homes and in 65 % of cases, unemployment has been the main cause of

non-payment of mortgages.

Regarding the granting of credit, the Bank of Spain is willing to open the tap of credit in 2014. Speaking to ABC, Banco Santander says it is doing everything possible to grow in funding and to the extent that doubts about the European financial sector banking accompany the recovery of the real economy with more credit is cleared.

Meanwhile, sources at Bankia said that the key segments that the group wants to lead in are new credit while Banco Sabadell sources said; “the improvement of the economic cycle, should allow lending to gradually return to normal.”

APAH say goodbye to Buena

By Keith Nicol IN NOVEMBER 2013, APAH Animal Rescue Charity suffered a huge shock, when Buena Adamson; a very special lady, who was a volunteer in their shop in San Miguel de Salinas died suddenly. Everyone was stunned, especially her devoted husband and sister; Jim and Pat; who is also a volunteer in the shop.

Buena’s family travelled over from the UK and were joined by many of APAH’s volunteers at her funeral service in San Pedro. There, it was announced that a collection would be taken, and it was the family’s wish to donate it to APAH. Donations to the collection have been coming in ever since, from many of the neighbours and friends which Jim and Buena made during the time she lived in San Miguel.

Last Thursday APAH was humbled and delighted to accept 475 euros. Spokesperson Margaret said, “It is a wonderful amount, which was born out of tragedy, but APAH wants to assure everyone who wanted to honour Buena’s memory by donating, that every single euro will be spent on the dogs and cats in APAH’s care.”

La Zenia roundabout changes cause upset

by Keith Nicol THE CLOSURE of two slip roads off the La Zenia Roundabout on the Orihuela Costa has local business owners and residents up in arms. On Christmas Eve, notice was received and posted at the Orihuela Town Hall outlying plans by the Ministerio de Fomento; the department for development and infrastructure, to close Calle Maestro Torralba and Calle Alhambra. Although the announcement was published in Spanish in the official bulletin (BOC), this was totally missed by the International Community. With the on and off closure of the Orihuela Costa Town Hall over the Chrismas holidays, the matter was slow to reach local businesses and residents and so a crisis meeting was quickly organised at Paddy’s Point to put a into place a plan of action to oppose the plan A group of local business representatives

organised a meeting with the Ministerio de Fomento in Alicante and voiced their concerns. They allege that the Ministry say that Orihuela Town Hall has been aware of the plan to close the roads for at least three months although in a meeting with Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, she stressed that the plans have not come from Orihuela Town Hall and that today, Friday, they will be meeting with the Ministry to raise their objections to the proposed closure.

She also said that she was unable to find any reference to the plans that the Ministry say were sent out more than three months ago.

She said the Town Hall’s official suggestion to the Ministerio de Fomento is to devise a one-way scheme rather than to close them completely.

Looting threatens Spain’s empty properties

by Jan Gamm THOUSANDS OF new builds that continue to remain uninhabited in Spain are a constant temptation for thieves and looters targeting expensive fixtures such as windows, doors, kitchen and bathroom fittings and also cable boxes. And the perpetrators have become experts at entering and leaving these buildings without being detected, making it necessary for owners to invest in

increasingly expensive security solutions.

Recently no less than 22 apartments were attacked overnight by looters who got away with aluminium windows, toilets, entire kitchens, electrical panels, doors, appliances and even tiles which were stripped from the walls. The buildings are also vulnerable to squatters. And the situation is exacerbated by the lack of agreement between constructors and purchasers over who is responsible for security systems.

Influenza on the rampage

THE MINISTRY of Health has announced that the number of cases of influenza in the Valencia region has rocketed over the last week, with children under four those most affected. There were 25 cases per 100,000 of the population prior to last week compared to 88 per 100,000 at the end of the week: of the total samples tested last week, six were of the H1N1 strain. Hospitals throughout the region will be adding extra beds to cope with the outbreak.

Valencia’s Art Centre headache THE CITY of Valencia is facing a dilemma over the urgent repair project of the Palau de les Arts, the stunning futuristic cultural centre in the city that is already showing signs of deterioration since its construction in 2005 with chunks of its metal skin falling away.

While the city ponders taking legal action against the architect, Santiago Calatrava, the building urgently requires immediate repair.

The difficulty is that nobody knows how to go about making the building safe without damaging its space helmet-like appearance and complicated coatings. A layer of ceramic tiling has been proposed along with various suggestions of specialised metallic painting and are currently under consideration but no decisions have been made so far on how to rescue the Palau de les Arts and prevent it from becoming yet another of Spain’s ‘white elephants’.

Paramount Centre Stage at FITUR

by Keith Nicol PARAMOUNT THEME Park will take centre stage at next week’s Tourism Expo in Madrid. Murcia’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz, said that Paramount Park, which will once again star at the XXXIV International Tourism Fair (FITUR), to be held from 22nd to 26th January.

Jesus Samper, president of flagship projects Murcianos (Premursa) said during last week’s press conference that, “scepticism does not worry me in the least. There was also scepticism about the New Condomina but there we have a stadium.”

Samper indicated that they are working with eight investment funds, all foreigners, but again refused to give the names, for reasons of confidentiality: “They did not wish their names to go out in the media.” He added that “The first buildings on the ground will be seen within eight months, upon completion of the installation work for water supplies, telephone and light as well as the implementation of security measures and houses for workers, plus the infrastructure needed to begin constructing the buildings and the installation of the attractions.”

jor recreation attractions will be displayed at the show, among which there will be four roller coasters, the largest of which can ‘travel’ up to 160 kilometres per hour, dropping from a height of 120 meters.

Cruz said the installation is, “absolutely stunning and an attraction in itself. It has been produced in Los Angeles, and provides a static 3D virtual walk where visitors can enjoy the picturesque attractions and areas. Google Flight Search has been around since 2011 when the company acquired ITA however data from some of the largest flight providers is not accounted for. “There are some very exciting developments with Google, where we have been working with them on sharing pricing,” O’Leary said. “We’ll be sharing the Ryanair pricing through all of the Google outlets, so when you go in, there’ll be route selections, cheapest prices and so on. Google are developing a pricecomparison thing themselves.”

Google has played down the announcement from O’Leary but they obviously have plans for travel expansion with their suite of products, including Google Hotels, Google Maps, Google+ and its acquisition of Zagat. An announcement from Google is expected in March, 2014.

Europe examines voting rights

by Jack Troughton VETERAN VOTING rights campaigner Harry Shindler MBE has been invited back to Brussels on Monday as the European Parliament’s powerful petitions committee puts voting rights back under the microscope.

The former soldier launched his campaign for all British expats to have a voice in their home country seven years ago but finally saw his case rejected.

However, the 93-year-old – a key member of campaign group Votes For Expat Brits – directly appealed to the parliament’s President Martin Shulz and a decision has been taken to revisit the case.

Unfortunately, Harry is unwell will not be able to attend in person but will be represented by his legal team – last September his lawyer and other campaign members met with European Commission Vice-President Viviane Reding who is supporting the fight for all EU citizens to have a vote in their home countries.

The move comes as the European Union (Referendum) Bill moves to the committee stage in the House of Lords after being debated last Friday – a backbench call for an ‘in/out’ vote on membership of the block by 2017, setting Prime Minister David Cameron’s promise to hold a ballot in statute stone.

And it was clear that the question of extending the franchise to people working in Europe or having retired to the Continent is beginning to raise its head in the Houses of Parliament.

During last week’s debate, Lord Shipley – a pro-Europe peer – said many people “likely to

be directly affected by the result will be denied a vote.”

DENY He outlined the 15 year rule – those who emigrated are allowed to vote in their last registered constituency have a voice until that period of living abroad - and underlined those who have lived in Europe would not take part.

Margaret Hales, a Costa Blanca based campaigner, said: “At last we are beginning to see the powers-that-be recognising that the disenfranchised Briton abroad has a case.

“Our message is beginning to get through that Britain treats its own hard-working, clean-living citizens abysmally when they move abroad.

“In today’s world that is unacceptable and at last this is recognised in Brussels. We continue with our campaign to get the message heard in our own Parliament in London.”

She urged people to write to their ‘old’ MP and “swamp” Westminster with letter saying Brits living abroad should have a vote – the politicians can be identified via www.findyourmp.parliament.uk And campaigners also urged people to lobby the House of Lords saying where they live in Europe and stressing how the outcome of any referendum was “vitally important” and how many expats would not have a voice.

Exhibition on military history of Spain ALICANTE COUNCIL is hosting an exhibition of 25 works in the Exhibition Hall of the Provincial Council on the history of soldiers in Spain, featuring recent works by Barcelona painter Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau. The exhibition is presented via audio visual information, one on the career of the painter and a display case containing posters of other samples by the artist. The exhibition opened on Wednesday and will run until 23rd February. The exhibition was opened by Cultural Deputy Juan Bautista Rosello accompanied by Commissioner Germán Segura, a career soldier and doctor of Geography and History, UNED; an authority on military history and culture. Ferrer-Dalmau explained: “The inspiration behind the paintings is Spanish military history – not English or American but Spanish.

And Spanish military art is rare. The exhibition pays tribute to Spanish soldiers who gave their lives for their country.” Other works were loaned by five institutions and twelve private owners in collaboration with the Provincial de Alicante.

SPAIN HAS the dubious distinction of being ranked No.2 in a survey of World’s Noisiest Countries, second only to Japan, according to a Scientific Committee on emerging and identified health risks. This is nothing new, since in previous rankings of world noise-polluters Spain has always fared admirably!

According to the World Health Organisation, more than nine million Spanish citizens are exposed to noise levels way beyond the tolerance barrier of 69 decibels. Furthermore, the National Statistics Institute confirms that noise is the topic Spaniards complain most about. “Noise is the most common problem in Spain, ahead of pollution,” the Environment Ministry said in its annual report Richard M McBride, Benidorm

I WOULD like to say a big thank you to everybody who took food, sweets and toys to the old town hall in San Miguel to make a better Christmas for the families registered with Social Services in the town.

You really made a difference and it would be wonderful if this could continue throughout the year as these 60 families still need help.

Pet owners beware FURTHER TO the lead story in last week’s RTN I would like to thank reporter Jack Troughton for his detailed and accurate description of the tragedy which occurred at my home on 28th December when one of my dogs was killed and two severely injured by hunting dogs. I am happy to report that both Amy and Gracie have now fully recovered from their wounds.

I would like to share some interesting facts which I learned when I visited the Guardia in Gata de Gorgos to make

a denuncia of the incident. Hunting is permitted on the ‘skirt’ of the Montgo from the month of October each year through to the end of the first week of January on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The hunters should not come within 50 metres of residential property (try telling that to a dog!)

As the dogs were inside my garden, there was clearly an infringement and I was advised that I should have called the Guardia immediately who could have ascertained if the hunters were

nearby. I was given an emergency telephone number.

To control the growth of the wild boar population hunting is also permitted on other occasions, but the dates for these are publicised in the Spanish media. Perhaps the English speaking media could do likewise.

Three copies were made of the denuncia, one of which is sent to the judge at the Denia court.

“My dog wouldn’t do that!”

REGARDING YOUR recent letter about ‘poor Taxi Drivers’ refusing to take a dog, I could not let this one pass undefended. Having owned and run a cab company in London for more than 30 years I feel reasonably qualified to defend the taxi drivers.

What does the author of the letter think the taxi drivers are doing in their cabs?

They would have been working, presumably because they and their families need the money. So why turn work away? Any experienced cab driver will tell you that most dogs will leave hair on the seats to get on the next customer’s clothes. Or they are sick in the cab, or leave their mess on the seat or floor.

Owners will just get out of the cab and walk away, saying: “He’s never done that before!” And the driver is left with the job of clearing up the mess, trying to get rid of the smell and losing a night’s work!

I can almost hear the author of the letter saying: “My dog wouldn’t do that!”

And I bet the dog left alone in a strange hotel never barked or howled to annoy other people - because, ‘My Dog’ would never do that either!

What the frac’s it all about?

WHEN I worked at Gatwick part of the ‘joy’ of my thirty-three mile drive home to the coast, was the countryside I travelled through. I deliberately avoided the motorways and dual carriageways in favour of a diagonal cut across the rolling Sussex Downs. It provided a buffer between work and home and allowed a time of reflection.

I would pass through a little village high on the North Downs called Balcombe. A further period of reflection was encountered in the delightful Half Moon pub that stands on the mini-roundabout on the road heading out of the village. During one particular swift half, after a long day at the airport, I overheard the locals grumbling about a construction project that was being hatched for their village. I sidled up to the bar and asked Don, the landlord “what goes on?”

Apparently, some surveyors had been sighted several times making readings and generally causing mystery around the village. “They’re being tight-lipped as to what they’re up to,” Don whispered, “but we have heard it’s something to do with a power generating company.” He added, “we don’t like it, at all...”

Now, I’d all but forgotten about this exchange with Don until late last year when Balcombe sensationally burst onto the national news. The frackers had arrived... there was shale gas in them thar hills and Cuadrilla were steaming in to grab it. Well, they were doing some test drilling, which is as good as saying

they were steaming in to grab it. And overnight, Balcombe’s population swelled by an encampment of genuine protesters (and the few usual inveterate trouble-makers), objecting to Cuadrilla’s plans for turning this lovely area into a fracking mining site.

The reason for mentioning all of this is the fact that fracking and Balcombe are back in the news this week. Some of those more determined protesters were acquitted for frightful behaviour at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. BBC South reported: “Eleven fracking protesters have been cleared of obstructing the highway by sitting on or around a log during a demonstration in Balcombe.”

However, those protesters are going to have to get on - or around - a lot more logs now that prime minister Dave is championing fracking. Many licences are up for grabs and French companies are particularly keen to get their hands a-fracking. The practice is banned in France; so it’s not surprising that as they can’t do it in their back yard they’ll come and do it in ours. I find it all rather worrying, don’t you?

This is what the Campaign to Protect Rural England says: “Fracking could provide a way to reduce our reliance on burning coal but we need to make sure that the countryside and rural communities are protected from any intrusive development. We need a transparent and democratic planning process that directs it to the least damaging locations such as brown-field

sites.” Hmmm, will we get this? Who will stop greedy multi-national companies? Does it sound like a campaign to protect rural England, to you?

The CPRE adds: “If fracking is to go ahead tough regulations must minimise its impact on the landscape, water resources and local people; and the industry must ensure adequate compensation for any damage caused, as well as meet demanding restoration conditions. The potential impact of associated traffic on small rural roads must also be taken into account.”

Or maybe we should be like the French and just not entertain fracking it at all. I’m sure they’d go along with that in Balcombe... I know Don in the Half Moon would say: “Pas dans ma cour monsieur!”

Where am I going? by

THIS YEAR, 2014, is going to be a very interesting year for my company. Having invested heavily for the last few years in offices I am now hoping to consolidate.

HAVING SAID that, I may well be going to another island this year! My company is doing extremely well after years of hard dedicated work and with many ups and downs on the way, but at present there is a solid base of excellent staff whose job is not just to sell but also to give full support and service to all our clients.

The policies we offer are honest and straight forward, with no hidden agendas. Working as I do with Liberty Seguros is a joy as they are one of the largest Insurance companies in the world and together with Asssa are an excellent health company specialising in the expat market; both very professional companies with polices we all need whilst living in Spain. They are both very secure, which is vital when dealing with your money.

On the subject of security, I understand there are quite a few people who may have heard or soon will hear about a large broker on the Costa Blanca who are sadly experiencing problems. If you are one of many who are insured with this Company, please make contact with us, we are there to support you in any way we can. We completely understand your concerns and obviously you don’t want to make a mistake with your future insurance.

Last year was a hard year for many of us in different ways. There are many ex pats returning to the UK, with fewer people deciding to make their permanent homes here. This of course has a negative effect on the amount of business that I can do.

What tempts many of us to Spain is the life style.

However, bureaucracy can be a nightmare. Running a company in Spain is not easy and I can well understand that companies from other countries are reluctant to invest in Spain, which of course would greatly help the Spanish economy.

I, of course, cannot move on until I have sold part or all of my company. Am I ready to do that? No is the honest answer, and all the time that I have good health I will carry on - I thrive on the challenge… having said that, I am going to try this year to take more time out: naturally enough I do become tired and overstressed.

Last year, I invested time and money in the ex-pats’ services side of my business, with two dedicated consultants, Tracey and Heidi. The financial part is growing fast and I am delighted that we can offer clients excellent investments to increase their wealth, together with Qrops which of course offers a wonderful tax advantage when investing your pension. This is possible because of living in Spain.

On 1st March I will be moving offices in Playa Flamenca, where we have a lovely office in the Commercial Centre near to Super Cor but sadly the area is slowly dying. The move will find us in Los Dolsos and I will have a Lawyer sharing the office who will of course be part of my ‘Ex-Pats Services’. You can see that I am always looking for ways to improve the services I offer. Many people like the idea of having all

their policies ‘under one roof’. They appreciate knowing the consultants personally and it brings them a certain amount of security: trust has to be earned and I hope you feel that you can trust us.

Paul Cunningham Nurses, my charity, continues, but since the outrageous fine of 12,000€ it struggles to offer the service of free hospice care to ex-pats who are dying and whose last wish is to die at home. Our nurses are caring, sympathetic and helpful… they are simply there in every way for the patient and family.

If you have a bar, club, association, of any sort please do contact us to see how you can support the charity: we do need your help to be able to continue to help others, and who knows perhaps one day it will be someone you know needing our comfort.

Diabetics can obtain advice from our specially trained nurses. Unfortunately in Spain the information and help is often sadly lacking. As you can see I am a very busy lady. One of my working enjoyments is my ‘Sound Advice’ programme on Bay Radio on the last Thursday of every month at 1pm.

Saint Anthony’s Day of the Pet

by Keith Nicol TODAY, FRIDAY January 17th, 2014 the traditional Day of Saint Anthony, patron saint of animals is held; a day when torrevejenses will walk or carry their pets through Torrevieja’s streets to have them blessed. Owners and their pets conjugate beside the Vista Alegre Exhibition Centre and make their way along calle Concepción to the front of Immaculate Church, where the local priest blesses all sorts of pets from reptiles to horses.

Over the years, the celebration has attracted every kind of per, from Irish Wolfhounds to Chihuahuas through cats, frogs, ferrets and even a bird or three, on the traditional San Anton or Saint Anthony Day. Local Priest Manuel Martínez Rocamora blesses each pet by sprin-

kling a little holy water over him or her.

Torrevieja’s Inmaculada Church is the setting for this year’s celebration and Father Rocomora will be sharing the duties with pastor Francisco Román who last year blessed almost 200 pets during the short ceremony.

Pets and owners assemble beside the Vista Alegre Exhibition Centre and accompanied by a vehicle playing classical music, the procession will make their way through the streets to the entrance beside the Church.

Each year the event grow in size and stature and is accompanied by many members of the Spanish and International Press along with TV Cameras. Many of those participating last year were doing so for the first time and said they would be returning for the fun and comradeship in 2014. The event is free,

Adam is back with Torrevieja Masters

by Patricia Thompson THE FIRST competition for ‘Club Natacion Torrevieja’ saw the Master welcome back Adam Stewart who had been in the UK for seven months but returned to join the team in December.

This was the first competition for the club and saw the Masters challenged after their festive break as they began their preparations for the Spanish Winter National Competition to be held in Palma, Majorca from 20th to 23rd February. Each member of the team swam two races against 17 other regional clubs. Unfortunately the final member of the team, Rafael Bordes Alonso, was unable to race on Sunday but is busy preparing for Majorca.

First to compete, Adam swam the 400m freestyle event achieving a good time, following with a good 100m butterfly swim - a good return to Spanish swimming for Adam. Paul Matthews, the other male swimmer in the team, had an

excellent swim in both his events the 200m Individual Medley (65+ yrs) and the 100m Freestyle event. Paul amassed a new personal best in the Freestyle with a time of 1:19:44 - one of the best swims of the day.

The ladies of the team followed with both Beth Altabas and Gillian McNiece swimming in the same events: the 200m Freestyle and the 200m Backstroke races. Both Beth and Gillian were close to their previous personal bests and Beth achieved a new best in her 2 0 0 m Backstroke event. Beth has now achieved new

regional records in both events in the 70 yrs+ category. Last of the ladies to compete was Vicki Connolly in the 45 yrs+ catagory in the 50m Breaststroke and 800m Freestyle events. Vicki came close to her personal best in the breaststroke event and her record in Valencia for 800ms.

FOR TWO successive years Levante Golf Society has raised money for HELP of Denia and Marina Alta.

Rob Westlands, Levante captain in 2012 and 2013, twice designated the HELP organisation to be the recipient for the Golf Society’s fund raising events during 2013, adding 500€ to the charity’s funds.

Rob presented a cheque to HELP stalwart Steve Patton who said: “We really appreciate this gesture by Levante.

HELP of Denia and Marina Alta provides a wide range of support and facilities for all the local communities and we are always grateful for donations.”

by Patricia Thompson Three local Bars that raised funds throughout 2013 are The Arches, Los Alcazares; Time Out Sports Bar in San Javier and Diamantes Restaurant at El Mojon.

Two MABS Volunteers Val and Malcolm Vickery run a bookstall at The Arches every Saturday morning, building up a regular following of customers with books selling at only 1€ each: the total raised for the year was an incredible 7,068€! Fundraising co-ordinator for MABS Wendy Grant presented Ali Chaplin, owner of The Arches, with a Certificate of Appreciation.

At Time Out Sports Bar in San Javier owners Gary and Sue Greenaway have supported MABS for several years, this year holding raffles and race afternoons as well as running a book stall, raising 1,002€. They sponsored events such as Race for Life and Party in the Park and also received a Certificate of Appreciation from Area Co-Ordinator Janet Bell.

MABS was the chosen charity for the successful Ladies Lunch Club at Diamantes Restaurant, with a raffle organised in aid of MABS at each of their lunches: a total of 1,382€ was

raised and Diamantes owner Karla Fuller was delighted to present MABS’ Janet Bell with a cheque, saying: “MABS is such a worthwhile Charity. I am delighted we have been able to help and will continue to do so this year.”

Sunday’s International Jazz Festival THE INTIMATE Palacio de Musico in Torrevieja is to host a new monthly cultural Initiative in the city during the winter.

by Keith Nicol This coming Sunday, January 19th, at 7:30pm, the First International Jazz Cycle will be opened by the Gypsy Jazz styling of the ‘Gustav Lundgren Trio’. The trio comes from Stockholm, Sweden and is led by Gustav Lundgren, one of the leading guitarists of his generation, and is a remarkably versatile jazz musician. The trio emulate the style of the Hot Club of France and especially the music of jazz great Django Reindhardt.

On Sunday, February 9th, at 7:30pm, the second day of the International Jazz Cycle features the Celia Mur Quintet, who present their new show ‘Swings Hot and Cool’. The Granada born Celia Mur is one of the bestknown voices of Spanish jazz and in this new project Mur returns to more of a pure jazz roots sound. Not surprisingly, one of her main influences is the great Ella Fitzgerald and this show perfectly illustrates the golden age of jazz in a relaxed style, that’s

intimate but above all else, has a great feel of the swing era.

The third and final performance is on Sunday March 23rd featuring the American singer Randy Greer. Endowed with an exceptional voice, he is considered one of the few to be able to sign in the inimitable vocal style of Nat King Cole, whom Greer acknowledges as his greatest influence along with Cab Calloway, Billy Eckstine and other jazz greats.

Greer has an extensive discography to his name, including albums made with guitarist Robin Nolan, the Barcelona Jazz Orchestra and Catalan pianist Ignasi Terraza.

The single ticket price is 10 euros, with a special ‘bono’ price also available for all three concerts at the price of 25 euros. Enjoy the current spring weather while it lasts HI READERS, what wonderful gardening and walking weather we are having at present and the 14-day forecasts suggest that things will continue this way for a while, although they got it wrong a few days ago when we had a heavy shower of rain and temperatures dropped.

The only way to balance interests and needs is to get a couple of hours of walking in early each day to recover from festive overeating, followed by a few hours of tidying the garden and then a late lunch in the sun before the sun dips down behind the mountain ridge to the south. Then evening time is reserved for writing as New Year resolutions include finishing off three books started last year, one of which is about gardening.

Yesterday I weeded the vegetable raised beds and containers, 80% of growing now being in the garden rather than on the allotment where fruit trees are already showing signs of flower buds and wild boar are giving the soil a good

turnover before I prepare to sow alfalfa and squash seeds.

But in the process they have methodically turned over a row of peas. Luckily most peas were sown in the garden. Today I am raking up leaves that have finally gone brown so autumn colours on paths can no longer be enjoyed.

Interestingly when I visited the Royal Botanic Garden in Madrid at the end of November there were notices saying that it was now their policy to similarly leave the leaves on the paths in the deciduous areas of the garden.

Also a tropical tomato tree similar to one I have nursed through two winters so far was protected from Madrid winter frosts and freezing winds by surrounding the trunk with a thirty centimetre tube of wire netting. The tube was then filled and stuffed tightly with leaves. If my tree had not already been placed in our overwintering plastic greenhouse I would have tried out this novel idea.

As last year, the Salvia collection is still blooming but

gradually I am pruning the perennial plants as some are now over three metres in height and looking leggy.

Many cuttings are being potted up to create replacement plants, with a few more fitting into other corners of the garden and I have some spring plants for friends.

Likewise the informal rose bed alongside the allotment still has a few blooms for cutting each week but this late/ early flowering will be pruned back on Friday to stimulate strong new growth and flower buds for early spring.

The increased sales via Amazon Books of ‘Living well from our garden – Mediterranean style’ suggest that more readers are planning to drink herbal infusions and eat more ecologically grown vegetables and fruits from their gardens. Congratulations and best of luck in doing so.

By the way the 18kilo turkey raised last year tasted great at Christmas and was amazingly succulent. Come May I will again obtain two turkey poults!

Inheritance and Wills in Spain by

RECENTLY WE saw in the Spanish press, that 21 Spanish NGOs, charities, social non-profit organizations, have launched a joint campaign to try to inform Spanish society about the possibility of including in Wills a legacy in favour of entities. These money injections could provide them with means to start new projects or maintain existing ones.

These “social “ legacies are not very common in Spain, when compared to some of our neighbouring countries. From our experience, most of the Wills which we have dealt with, where there was some kind of provision in favour of charities, whilst Spanish wills, they were granted by non Spanish nationals.

Such bequests are absolutely legal and possible, but they need to be made respecting the applicable law to Wills and inheritance. For example, if under the applicable law it is imperative to leave a portion of the

estate to a family member (i.e. descendants , spouse, etc. .) this “solidarity legacy” must not affect that portion. It is therefore necessary to know the applicable law and its limitations before making any will.

In our office we have been able to help many of our clients in drafting their Wills correctly in favour of Spanish and non Spanish charities, foundations, etc. In these cases, it is essential to identity perfectly the NGO, with the full name, charity or association number in the relevant country, full address, etc.

Unfortunately we have seen cases where, it has been impossible to execute the Will, as it was made incorrectly, or did not accurately identify the beneficiary, etc.

It could be advisable that the testator name an executor of the Will in Spain, to ensure that the will be fulfilled, and to simplify the inheritance process to the charities.

Also, because non-profit entities do not pay inheritance tax, (although they pay other taxes), from a tax point of view, the inheritance cost is often much cheaper for an entity of this kind, than for an individual.

We have been able to help NGOs, associations, foundations, charities and all kinds of Spanish, English, and international institutions, to take the necessary steps to be able to inherit in Spain, helping them to get their tax identification number, necessary documents and paperwork, etc.

Why your top New Year’s resolution should be to sort out your finances NONE OF us are getting any younger and all of us would like to increase our wealth. Well now is the time to look at what investments you have, what you earn etc., and to see what can be done to make your money work for you.

PENSIONS If you have a Personal Pension in the UK now is the time to look into whether transferring it into an overseas pension scheme like a QROPS or QNUPS is beneficial to you. There are numerous benefits like paying less income tax, reducing inheritance tax, flexibility to leave your pension to whoever you wish.

IF YOU are a non-resident all that remains once the contracts are signed and money is exchanged is to sit back and wait for your 3% retention to be released.

In case you are not aware, the 3% retention is the amount that is kept back by the Spanish Tax Authority after the sale of a property by a non-resident. It is used to pay the Capital Gains Tax and ensures that funds remain available. Seems logical, if a little frustrating that you must wait for the full amount from your sale to be released.

But now the plot thickens… Ábaco sometimes receive notifications from the Tax Authority of retentions that are being returned.

Sue Partridge, tax adviser, noticed that there was something rather unusual about some of these notifications. ‘I could see that a list of items had been subtracted from the 3% retention in addition to the capital gains tax. There was very little to indicate what these deductions were for,’ explains Sue. In true detective style, Sue and colleagues investigated further to discover that these were deductions from different Spanish administrative

departments. Complementary tax, missed social security payments, health service charges had all been taken off the 3%.

One recurring deduction was for the amount of 105€. Why should so many people mysteriously owe the same amount? ‘It turned out that the 105€ was a traffic fine,’ says Sue, ‘Trafico, like the other departments, had got wind of the fact that these non-residents had sold their property, that money was available and were busy reclaiming the money they were allegedly owed in fines.’

Sue uses the word ‘allegedly’ because at this late stage it is difficult to check their authenticity. ‘I’m afraid there is no appeal at this stage. The money has been deducted and the case is closed as far as these government departments are concerned.’

In some cases it was just a small deduction. In others it was a significant proportion of the anticipated retention. In one case a non-resident was due 3,000€ but ended up with 800€. Over 2,000€ had been deducted for a complementary tax payment when the property was first purchased.

Particularly worrying is that there is no means of checking whether you are likely to be similarly ‘hit’ by

government departments swooping on your 3%. You just have to wait. Sue does have some advice though: “Just be conscious of the fact that they are sharing information. Don’t expect your debts to go unnoticed, whatever department it is.”

TATTOOS ARE suddenly everywhere – once the reserve of bikers, sailors and criminals, body art or inking is now widely accepted and has lost its stigma in society.

TODAY MANY top stars and celebrities such as David Beckham and Angelina Jolie flaunt their Laszlo David at work body art and apparently one in five adults has one.

You may imagine tattoo parlours to be dodgy backstreet basements, and indeed some may be, but at ‘AlteaInk’ it is anything but. Located on the N332 Calle La Mar in Altea, the light and airy studio overlooks the tranquil lapping waters of the Mediterranean. The entrance is from the N332 side, a few doors from Ale Hop and just by the huge car park on the seafront.

Hygiene and cleanliness are of paramount importance to tattoo artist Laszlo David, who has been inking for more than 13 years. He has built up a loyal and trusted clientele, some who travel from as far as Germany for his expertise. You can’t just turn up and expect to be inked there and then: David and fellow tatooist Bärbel insist on a consultation with all clients to talk through their requirements and ideas.

Many clients know what they want and bring pictures and designs but others will look through images and discuss thoughts together. One rule that they never break is over 18’s only – unless accompanied by a parent and then they would still advise you to wait.

Once you have decided on a design, it is printed on paper and the image stencilled onto the skin with a temporary marker in the exact position. The client can then look and check it is exactly what they want before permanent inking is done – if not it can be wiped off and re-positioned.

Brand new single-use needles are used every time, unpacked in front of the client just before work commences and aftercare support and advice are talked through before you leave. To stop the colours from fading they advise the application of plenty of sun cream to any tattoos.

The studio is private and well heated as often clients will be half naked, dependent on where they are being worked on. The couch is disinfected after each use and wrapped in clean, fresh cling film to prevent any cross contamination. The area to be worked on is thoroughly cleaned and new clients, or those with sensitive skin, are advised to use a special numbing cream some hours before arrival. You are also told to have a good breakfast or meal beforehand to maintain your stamina as some designs require several hours of work.

Life people SCA announces new crew for all-female team SCA HAS today confirmed that Sally Barkow (USA) and Justine Mettraux (SUI) will be joining the all-female team for the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race.

BOTH SAILORS come with a strong pedigree and join a growing squad of international sailing champions. Team SCA crew to date includes Carolijn Brouwer (NED); Sam Davies, Abby Ehler, and Annie Lush (GBR), and Liz Wardley, Sophie Ciszek and Stacey Jackson (AUS).

From hundreds of applications some 35 women have been invited to take part in month-long trials at the team’s base in Lanzarote, Spain. Each candidate has to go through a rigorous training and physical programme as well as sailing onboard the team’s Volvo Ocean 65.

“Finding people with the right mix of physical strength, sailing skills and personality is no easy task - even in a traditional all-male team,” comments Team SCA coach Joca Signorini, himself veteran of three Volvo Ocean Races. “It is really important that we take our time to secure the best possible squad of women to take on this race. I have been incredibly impressed so far and am very happy with how the team is shaping up.”

Sally Barkow (33) has been on and off the Olympic circuit for the past 10 years and competed for the US team in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. A skilled match racer, she has been with Team SCA for the past few months.

“This is definitely really exciting. I feel that SCA is providing an incredible opportunity here to compete on an equal level with the other teams in this race. There are only nine months left to the start, so we are really now

on the home straight and have everything to train and play for,” comments Barkow.

Justine Mettraux (27) joins the team fresh from competing in the Mini Transat, where she finished in second place, a position that secured the best performance by a woman in a Mini Transat series boat in the event. (The Mini Transat is a solo transatlantic yacht race on small 6.5m boats that starts in France and ends in the Caribbean.)

She has been part of the Mini circuit in Switzerland and since 2012 has been regularly appearing on podiums. She was also part of the successful Team SCA squad for the Fastnet Race, coming in at the last minute to replace an injured colleague.

“For me this is a great opportunity, and I couldn’t wait to get back to Lanzarote and join the Team SCA training program. I hope that my Mini Transat experience will stand me in good stead and it is great to be sailing with such a strong team of women,”

Team SCA is now back training in Lanzarote after Christmas and New Year break. The team will continue its two-boat testing program as this has been very successful to date and allows the coaches to

further develop the training programs.

There are number of longer offshore races planned for the first half of the year before the team moves base to Alicante in preparation for the start of the Volvo Ocean Race in October.

How dýa fancy going Celebrity Clips Round the World in 90 mins!

I ALWAYS felt that Dermot O´Leary was doing the X Factory for the money; that he was ´stuck on´ if you know what I mean. He was involved in some controversy over the years, but he always came out of it with his nose fairly clean, although he did seem to choose to kiss butt a couple o´ three times.

But life is about to change and then some for the lad from Colchester Essex who is the son of Irish parents Sean and Marie from the Republic of Ireland, and a man who is well proud of his Irish roots.

We all have our favourite live television broadcast moment from outer space and come the month of March Channel 4 will be broadcasting their ´Live from Space Season´ and the lovely Dermot will be hosting. From what I´ve read, whatever your fav space moment might be, chances are it will be blown away when you see the very first ´LIVE´ lap of Earth … bet that got you gasping for air my lovelies … did me!

Dermot is to be rocketed out of his comfort zone to present the very first live broadcast from outer space.

Speaking of what lies ahead he said: “It’s a big deal for me to be asked to host Live from Space Season,” then quite charmingly he added “When the producer first told me about the show I had to try hard not to revert back to being the 8-year-old kid recalling the excitement I felt watching the first space shuttle take off in ’81” … don’t you just love him … told you he was made of the right stuff.

Channel 4´s creative director Tom Brisley said “ the ISS (International Space Station) with Dermot on board, will be travelling at 300 miles per minute and will orbit the earth in 90 minutes” … OMG! … And we will see it all LIVE! … OMG!! … From 250 miles up … OMG!!! … Yoo the man Dermot … Yoo the man!!!

RUMOURS ARE rife that the two remaining Beatles Paul and Ringo will reunite for the first time in many a haircut on The Late Show with David Letterman on US TV, and that it will happen on February 7th, the date the group first appeared on TV over there 50 years ago ... Sorry about the knee jerk date-wise folks … doesn´t time fly.

Ricky Wilson, lead singer with Kaiser Chiefs, did his first stint as a judge on ´The Voice´ last Saturday and beforehand admitted to be doing it for the purpose of record sales. After reminding us his band’s new album is coming out on March 31st he went on to say “that’s why I’m doing it ... I’m not a f***ing idiot … Nice!

I find this next CC rather disturbing as it´s been reported that Mr and Mrs Carter, Beyonce and husband Jay-Z, had the Jungle Island wildlife park in Miami, Florida closed down last Tuesday so that their 2 year old child Blue Ivy could see all the animals and stuff without any of us plebs getting in the way … how sad is that!

Nigella Lawson is here again, as the news out of Hollywood is that Angelina Jolie is to play the part of the sexy chef in a biopic of her life. It’s amazing what rustling up something with asparagus and pasta can do for your career, especially when you stir in a nasty divorce and a dash of cocaine to complete the dish.

The pitchfork centre of the world JARAFUEL IS the third main town heading southward in the Valle de Ayora. Its main claim to fame is that it is the Spanish centre (and therefore probably the world’s) for the production of the horca, the long-pronged wooden pitchfork seen in many Valencian fiestas.

IN THE plantations around Jarafuel the almez, a flexible tree peculiar to this region, is carefully cultivated so that its growth takes on the required shape for the horca.

Each branch has four slimmer offshoots, and when it is harvested they are baked in an oven to remove the bark and bound with flat lengths of wood and round stones, to be left for a couple of months to dry and hold the distinctive curved pitchfork shape.

Jarafuel is also a major producer of bastones (walking sticks) in every conceivable shape and size, including those made from a tree root whose handles are carved into the shape of lions, elephants, horses and other animals, their heads and limbs following the particular growth of each individual root.

There are a number of small factories but Bastones Martínez on Calle Juan XXIII has a huge selection and, if you can get a glimpse into the factory, you will see a strange assortment of Heath Robinson machinery that bends, strips, straightens, carves and sands the bastones and horcas.

The castle was built in the 12th Century and had a chequered history until it was burned down on the orders of the aptly named Pedro the Cruel in 1366 during the ‘Guerra de los dos Pedros’, those of ‘the Cruel’ of Castille and ‘the Ceremonious’ of Aragon. Little remains now but a bell tower and a couple of bits of wall, but there are wonderful views

over the valley from its vantage point at the top of the town.

There’s also one of the long plaques telling the history of the valley, this one of a battle, with another near the fountain in front of the church telling of life during the seemingly endless series of battles.

The streets of Jalance are of the typical meandering Moorish design, spreading along the hill leading up to the castle. Occasional dead-ends and flower-covered terraces give a slight break in the monotony, but you get the distinct feeling that nothing really goes on here.

The most exciting event for ages seems to have been the shouting match between sisters that was going on while I was there, and brought out a number of neighbours to enjoy the show. When one of the sisters dragged her husband into their car, still screaming over her shoulder, and drove away, everyone went back inside and left me the only person walking the streets on a warm summer’s afternoon.

If you feel like a dip, Jarafuel has a large municipal swimming pool (with a smaller one for children) next to which is the restaurant El Molino, whose awnings provide a welcome shade from the heat of the summer sun.

Jarafuel is 117km from Valencia and can be accessed on the A3 motorway from Valencia to Requena, N330 in the direction of Almansa.

In 2012, Spanish Heartthrob David Bisbal thrilled Torrevieja audiences with his performance at the International Auditorium but he was beaten into second place by Rosa, who then went on to represent Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2002. Rosa has not lost any of her naturalness, humanity and warmth with her fame, or the seven million albums that she has sold since then. She also represented Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest which she notes was her first flirt with stardom, remarking that “Eurovision was not much more than an opportunity for promotion, but if offered the chance, I’d love to walk that path again.”

Along with blossoming as a performer, she has studied English for the last eleven years and has perfected her singing technique, along with losing about 40 kilos, but stardom has not changed her and the Andalusian wit always remains, She was first in Torrevieja in 2004 at the Eras de la Sal and sold out the Teatro last year.

Her show promises to be one of the best nights of musical entertainment on Torrevieja’s Cultural Program and tickets are selling fast. Tickets can be bought online, at the Theatre Box Office or on the night of the show, space permitting.

at Los Carteros A NEW group has emerged out of Los Montesinos who call themselves ´The Replays.´ They are a three piece band featuring Simon on Guitar, Mandolin and Vocals, Zak on Keyboard and Vocals, and our very own Showbiz Goss columnist Peter Taylor on Acoustic Guitar and lead Vocal. They will be performing their first live gig next Friday 24th January at a fantastic venue called Restaurante Los Carteros which is on Urbanization Cuidad de las Comunicaciones.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

“I’m going to” and negatives LET’S START this week with some sentences which revise what we learnt in the previous article. They can all build together very simply, by combining “I” words (quiero – I want, necesito – I need, puedo – I can) with verbs in their basic, or infinitive, form, that is the form that ends in “–ar”,”-er” or “–ir”.

QUIERO TRABAJAR I want to work.

NECESITO COCINAR I need to cook.

PUEDO BAILAR I can dance.

NECESITO COMER TRES VECES AL DÍA I need to eat three times a day.

QUIERO JUGAR OTRA VEZ I want to play again.

PUEDO ABRIR LA PUERTA I can open the door.

Now we are going to introduce another “I” expression, which works in exactly the same way as the ones we have already seen. This time it consists of two words - VOY A and it means “I’m going to”.

“I am going to” is rather a long expression in English, but it cannot be translated word for word into Spanish. We need to think about the concept it expresses, which is related to my “intention” to do something. When we want to express our intention in Spanish these are the two words we should use VOY A, and we then follow them with any infinitive verb in just the same way as before. For example: VOY A COCINAR (I’m going to cook) VOY A ABRIR (I’m going to open) One of the most important keys to learning Spanish is to realize that we cannot translate word for word. This is the big mistake that many people make. In actual fact, most of our confusion about Spanish comes from our insistence on trying

to translate literally all the time when it is the idea behind the words which is the important thing. Something else you may have noticed is that the Spanish use fewer words than English to express the same ideas, which is amazing in itself when you think how much they like speaking.

Here are some more sentences for you to translate into English. This time I will put the answers at the end of the article.

QUIERO BAILAR CONTIGO PUEDO TRABAJAR MAÑANA VOY A COMER AHORA NECESITO APRENDER ESPAÑOL Now we’re going to look at something new, which we can do without needing to learn any new words at all. This is absolutely true and just shows how easy basic Spanish really is. Here it is – if you put the word NO in front of any of your new sentences you instantly make them negative. This may not sound like a big deal, but it is remarkably simple and much easier than English. For example:.

VOY A COCINAR I’m going to cook NO VOY A COCINAR I’m not going to cook NECESITO CAMBIAR DINERO I need to change money NO NECESITO CAMBIAR DINERO I don’t need to change money QUIERO VOLVER A INGLATERRA I want to go back to England NO QUIERO VOLVER A INGLATERRA I don’t want to go back to England PUEDO DORMIR AQUÍ I can sleep here NO PUEDO DORMIR AQUÍ I can’t sleep here Please take a second to look at the way these negative

forms are made in English. “I’m not going to”, “I don’t need to” “I can’t”. Imagine being a foreigner trying to learn English, you have to learn lots of different ways of making negatives, whereas in Spanish you only ever have to put NO in front of the verb – and Bob’s your uncle, you’ve made your sentence negative. You see – I told you it was easy!

Now here are the answers to the sentences above: QUIERO BAILAR CONTIGO: “I want to dance with you” (You never know when this phrase might come in handy) PUEDO TRABAJAR MAÑANA. “I can work tomorrow” (Anathema to some people, but a few of us still have to do it!)

VOY A COMER AHORA. “I am going to eat now” (We could also translate this “I’m going to have lunch now” as the Spanish also use “COMER” to refer to having their big midday meal.)

NECESITO APRENDER ESPAÑOL. “I need to learn Spanish” (You can’t argue with that really, and it could be useful when you want to encourage a Spanish person to actually speak to you in Spanish rather than English which tends to happen round here more and more). Now here are some sentences to think about for next week. This time you’re going to translate four short sentences from English into Spanish. The basic structures are exactly as we’ve learnt them so far – there are no tricks, and the answers will appear next week!

I don’t want to speak English.

I’m not going to open the door.

I can’t cook very well.

I need to work a little.

Altogether I thought it worth the reading and a pleasant companion for an evening by the fire if you belong to Grandma’s MAMAs Club – that’s My Old Man’s Out Again......

Cantabile Choir CANTABILE CHOIR is a friendly and sociable group of around 24 ladies who take their music seriously.

Satisfied hearing aid users

A SURVEY has shown that up to 84% of hearing aid owners are satisfied with their hearing.

FIGURES FROM seven countries show that the percentage of people satisfied with their hearing aids varies from country to country. In six European countries, the satisfaction rate varies from 84% in Switzerland to 70% in Italy. In general, eight out of ten are satisfied with their hearing aids and said they were either ‘very satisfied’, ‘satisfied’ or ‘somewhat satisfied’ with their hearing aids.

The same study was carried out in Japan. The situation there was different. Only 36% said that they were satisfied.

A similar survey from the US in 2008 (MarkTrak VIII) showed that 74% of US-owners were satisfied with their hearing aids.

AGE AND USE OF HEARING AIDS The survey also found that the newer the hearing aids and the more hours of the day the hearing aids were

used, the higher the satisfaction rate.

The surveys were carried out in Italy, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Norway and Japan in 2012.

Life recipe

Chicken curry with courgettes and coconut cream WELL, OKAY, so it’s not exactly Mediterranean – or is it? This is modern Mediterranean food we’re talking about and even in my remote part of Spain, all the ingredients are readily available without resorting to those ‘English’ shops where I go for crumpets and Marmite! Serve with plain boiled rice.

• 350g boneless chicken meat, cut into bite sized chunks • 1 medium onion, peeled and sliced • A one inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped • 1 clove of garlic, peeled and chopped • 1 small courgette, cut in half lengthways and sliced • 2 small tomatoes, cut into wedges • A 175ml tin of coconut milk • Half a tsp cumin seeds, crushed • The seeds from 5 cardamom pods, crushed • 1 tsp hot chilli powder • Half a tsp turmeric • Salt • Olive oil 1. Fry the onions in a large frying pan with a little oil until just beginning to brown. Add the chicken, ginger and garlic and fry for 5 minutes until nicely browned. Add the courgettes and fry for a further 2-3 minutes.

2. Add the cumin, cardamom, chilli and turmeric and stir well then add the coconut milk and heat until bubbling. Season with a little salt and add the tomato wedges. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.

3. When ready to serve, spoon the curry over plain boiled rice and garnish with a few slices of red chilli.

The event consumes more than 600 kilos of meat, bread, beer and fine wine in La Mata, and best of all, it’s totally free, as the local ‘materos’ invite all attendees to taste and sample different pork products.

Outlook sign in HELLO AUNTY: Can you help? I have had a Hotmail email address for some years, but since it’s been taken over by Microsoft (Outlook) I now have to continuously keep signing to my email account, even though it says ‘stayed signed in’. It is really tedious and I can’t seem to resolve it. My email address is Hotmail but when I look at my emails it always comes up as Outlook. Any assistance would be appreciated. 4. Select the User names and passwords on forms check box. If you want to automatically save all user names and passwords without being asked each time you visit a new site, clear the Ask me before saving passwords check box.

Unwanted ‘PUP’

HI AUNTY: While watching a football game via streaming I pressed the wrong button and downloaded what I believe is a ‘pup’. Anyway I have Panda anti-virus, ran that but cannot get rid of do-search coming up as my homepage. Anyway can you recommend any good anti-malware site I can download and get rid of this problem? Many thanks, David.

Aunty says: A ‘PUP’ is a ‘Potentially Unwanted Program’ which says it may be a risk, but the software does not know for sure. I do not think a malware program will be able to help you with ‘do search’, so you need to manually reset and change things.

First you need to go into your browser settings, and set the home page to one that you want.

Next go to the search engine settings, and delete / remove / uninstall / disable ‘do-search’ from the list.

Next go to the addons settings, and delete / remove / uninstall / disable ‘dosearch’ from the list.

Next go to ‘uninstall programmes’ in the control panel and see if there is an entry for ‘do-search’ and uninstall it.

Finally, check the ‘short cut’ icons you use to open your browser.

Right click on the icon and check the “target” It should be something like: ‘C:\Program Files (x86)\ Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe’. If there is anything after ‘exe’ remove this, as this will be code telling your browser to open at a certain page every time you click on the icon.

How you do all of this will vary from browser to browser.

Then download, install, update, and run Antimalware bytes, one of the best and most popular antimalware programs, that should help get rid of any ‘unwanteds’.

PDF problems DEAR AUNTY: I help produce an online Newsletter, assemble them in Publisher and then convert it to .pdf for on-line access. I always thought a .pdf document would appear the same regardless of who was reading it. However, some members have been having problems when accessing the newsletter in that some articles have peculiar and sometimes unreadable fonts. It seems worse when using iPads but some PCs have problems too.

Is this likely to be due different versions of Adobe Reader, or some other cause?

Aunty says: The problem with iPads and PDFs is that iPads generally use their own ‘viewer’ to open documents. As such this may display the content in a different manner - much in the same way that there are many PDF readers available for iPads, and some work better than others. This can also happen on PCs where the user may use a different ‘viewer’ than Adobe PDF reader to open PDF files. Or if those PCs are not using the most up-to-date version of Adobe reader - so formats and fonts may be displayed differently.

Maybe using a single common font would help like Arial or Times New Roman.

OCH AYE! It is very strange that in every golf club across the UK at the end of January there is an added urgency to ensure that you are included in the Burns Night Celebrations.

It is the one event of the year that is regularly and heavily over-subscribed.

Campbell: So I presume you will be taking part in the Scottish Scramble at La Sella. Will you be wearing traditional dress?

Tony M: Sadly no but I expect that you will be kitted out in the full regalia.

Campbell: As always I will be wearing my clan tartan in the form of a kilt.

Tony M: In that case I have a small favour to ask.

Campbell: Go ahead.

Tony M: This year if you happen to get the odd birdie could you maybe just clap rather than do those cartwheels. Several of us are still having difficulty in getting that picture out of our minds.

WHY? ARE golfers so filled with a spirit of tradition that an event that is essentially Scottish must be heavily patronised as being from the home of golf? Is the skirl of the pipes and the aroma of a hot haggis something that stirs latent patriotism within our chests? When one of our mates (he has never been further north than Leeds) utters those immortal words “Great Chieftain o’ the pudden’ race,” do we nod and applaud in total agreement as if this Highland dialect is our native tongue?

It is indeed a strange phenomenon and as such it is hard to explain but undoubtedly in golf clubs in every corner of the globe this month there will be pipers piping and lassies being toasted.

TRADITIONS It is possible that golfers who enjoy a sport steeped in tradition feel a kinship with a celebration that has similar values? Great store is set by the manner in which the haggis is paraded into the dining room. Everyone stands and applauds until, with expansive gestures, it is sliced and laid open.

There is an honesty about the whole event that appeals to everyone irrespective of their heritage and it is possibly this openness and adherence to tradition that instils the affection in the hearts of golfers everywhere. The Burns Night celebrations have a dignity and honesty that is typical and unique to golf. Whilst professionals in other sports fain injury in order to obtain an advantage, golf is the sport where, despite the fact that you may be hidden away from your colleagues, you will advise them that the ball you rescued from the undergrowth is not the one you played off the tee.

ROBERT BURNS TODAY It is also possible that there are many who espouse the values so closely associated with Robert Burns. He was a man who had a fierce reputation as a Lothario and as such he would be constantly in the headlines of the red tops and the gossip magazines if he were living today, but he was also the man who clearly understood the value of humanity and, whilst he may be dismayed at the snobbishness that besets the ancient Golf club houses, he would nevertheless have applaud the ethics and the spirit in which the game is played.

Peugeot Partner DELIVERY DRIVERS are a misunderstood breed. Imagine what their lives must be like with a never-ending list of deliveries to make to various locations within a set time frame. This is only set to increase as online shopping becomes ever more popular. So remember this demanding schedule when one pulls out in front of you without indicating.

What do these drivers do when they can’t get there on time because of snow, for instance? Simple - often appointments are missed and rescheduled at the

customer’s inconvenience in my experience, with no apology and certainly no compensation. This unhelpful and all too regular scenario is sure to have arisen many times over the recent inclement weather. Wouldn’t it therefore be helpful if there was a van that could handle the snow and ice? A van that is ideal for those remote parts of England or even the Highlands of Scotland…

Well, I am pleased to report that there is in the form of the new Peugeot Partner all-terrain van, which is fitted with an indispensable grip control. This dial found to the left of the steering wheel allows the driver to select the appropriate mode for the conditions and responds accordingly. But I notice that this grip control falls back to its original setting when the engine is switched off so the driver needs to remember this when they set off again.

My test takes place as Britain emerges from heavy snowfall and rain turns to ice. Needless to say that it remains in ice and snow mode for the duration of the test.

There’s also an ASR (antislip regulation) providing further surefootedness as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. It makes light work of manoeuvring out of

an ice covered car park while other vehicles remain stranded.

With its extra 10mm height over a normal Partner van the driver of this all-terrain model enjoys a good view of the road ahead. It feels competent on the motorway with only a mere hint of buffeting. The upgraded 195/70 R15 tyres, specifically for mud and snow, give the driver added confidence that they will make their deliveries on time.

New additive system for diesel engined cars to lower pollution A GERMAN company has developed a new system for Diesel-engined light vehicles such as cars so that the toxic chemicals emitted from the exhausts are greatly reduced. It has been available for heavy vehicles for some time.

As many of us know if we take a technical interest in the subject, diesel engines of similar size/power, hauling the same loads have much lower CO₂ emissions than petrol ones for the same distance travelled with the CO₂ method of measuring the pollution being currently used to measure pollution emissions on motor vehicles.

Modern petrol engines using non-leaded fuel generate more CO₂ than diesel engines. However, diesels have a problem with toxic nitrous oxides which from a health point of view tend to cancel out the benefits of the lower CO₂.

As diesel engines produce their outputs of power at a much lower RPM this means that more power is developed for each power stroke for similar sized capacities. That is why diesels can achieve the power at the lower operating RPM, which means far less exhaust emissions per kilometre travelled. As CO₂ emissions are measured in so many grams per kilometre, fewer piston strokes per km means lower emissions.

Another problem is that the diesel engine also

emits soot particles which are taken care of by diesel particulate filters (DPF). A DPF is a ceramic (heatproof) block that filters soot particles from the exhaust gases. They are removed in a steel casing and the latest, which we will see soon on new light vehicles, e.g. cars, have to be designed into the system.

Hopefully an after-market add-on may become available at a later date if ordered by law. It is not just a case of bolting on the new equipment, which consists of a tank with liquid containing a solution of 32, 5% quality Urea mixed with distilled, or de-ionised, water. One trade name is AdBlue.

Inserted in the exhaust after the DPF is a catalyser similar to those fitted for some years now in all our

non-leaded fuelled petrol-engined vehicles.

The solution will be accurately sprayed into the exhaust so when the mixture of gasses and the solution reaches the new catalyser, a chemical reaction takes place and the exhaust then emits a mixture of nitrogen and water which is acceptable to human beings. The consumption of the Adblue (or Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is about 5-6% of the diesel fuel consumption and it is kept in a separate tank on the vehicle.

For those who want to read more, Google ‘Adblue’ and check the technical information available. The solution is quite corrosive so the tank and system has to be made of high quality materials. More expense for us poor motorists!
