THIS WEEK, Romanian citizen Valentin Ion, who has been held in prison since May, was charged with the murder of the Dutch couple. The events date back to May 13, 2013 when the couple landed at El Altet, Elche-Alicante airport with the intention of spending three days in Murcia. A day later, both had an appointment at a clinic in Murcia city, although the reasons for this have been kept secret by the family, as this was not ‘relevant’ to the investigation. Ingrid Visser, was well known in Spain because she was a professional volleyball player who had represented the Netherlands more than 500 times in championships and had been a member of several Spanish teams. On Monday, May 13th the couple rented a car at the airport to drive to their hotel in Murcia and this was the last day that they were seen alive. After registering at the front desk, they left for a meeting at the clinic but
did not show for their scheduled appointment and the Clinic Director contacted the National Police of their disappearance. Enquiries led the police to a house in Molina de Segura where they discovered evidence that an act of violence had taken place. Based on their findings, the police continued the research and proceeded to arrest a person of Spanish nationality in Valencia; Juan Cuenca which led them to a farm in the village of Alquerías where they discovered more evidence of wrongdoing. After digging up an area of the farm they uncovered the remains of two people, that according to certified researchers, belonged to a man and a woman. Three individuals were arrested in relation to the crime. DNA analysis confirmed that the remains were consistent with the two missing Dutch nationals, and forensic studies established that both had suffered a violent death, identical in both cases, caused by head trauma. The case continues.
